AURORA – Days after two of their classmates died in a car accident, Aurora Central Catholic High School students Natalie Droeske, Maria Arroyo, Andrea Bieritz and Alex Horton decided to do something proactive.

“That Thursday after the accident, being at school was just – there was a pall on our atmosphere,” Droeske said, noting students were sent home early so they could grieve.

The 18-year-old senior and her friends gathered at Horton’s house, where they decided to raise money for the families affected by the March 10 crash by selling T-shirts for $7, she said.

It soon became a project others were ready to support.

Arch Printing in Aurora donated time and labor toward the effort, charging only for the actual shirts, Droeske said. She said Trader Joe’s in Batavia didn’t hesitate to provide bags.

“We asked for them and got them that day,” she said.

Word about the fundraiser spread through social media, as Droeske said she used her personal Twitter account and the school newspaper’s account – @ACCNewspaper – for promotion.

She asked those wanting to sell shirts to contact her. She expected feedback from Marmion Academy and Rosary High School, she said, but got responses from many more – about 16. The list includes both private and public schools from throughout the Tri-Cities area and in places such as Joliet and Marengo.

“The response was overwhelming,” Droeske said,

adding she ended up carrying her phone charger around for the next week because of the constant texts and Tweets she received.

By the first deadline, Droeske said, 2,056 shirts were ordered.

“I never thought it would be that high,” she said.

Meanwhile, she said, the amount of money raised has been bolstered by donations exceeding the T-shirt price and is approaching $15,000.

While Droeske and her friends have spearheaded the project, the teen wrote in an email that their moms have helped just as much, and other friends – including those from other schools – have pitched in, as well.

“This project would not have happened if it weren’t for all of our friends [who’ve]

supported us,” Droeske wrote, describing it as a “true team effort.”

Orders for the shirts will be accepted through the end of the school day Thursday, Droeske said. She said those not affiliated with ACC may visit the school office, 1255 N. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora, to place an order.

The shirts are white with a royal blue design that include the date of the car accident, the first names of the students killed and the phrase #PRAY4ACC. Droeske said the proceeds will be split among the family of the driver and the families of the two students who died, Seth Egger and Allison Bradford.

Rotolo remembered

By ERIC SCHELKOPF BATAVIA – Former teacher and principal Sam Rotolo is being remembered as someone who knew all of his students and showed them respect.

Rotolo, of Geneva and formerly of Batavia, passed away Sunday. He was 89.

Rotolo taught physical education and science at Louise White Elementary School in Batavia, later becoming the school’s principal in 1956. In 1966, he became the first principal of Batavia Junior High School. The Batavia Public Library is located on the site of the former junior high school.

He retired from Batavia School District 101 in 1989 and was later honored when the Batavia Middle School was renamed the Sam Rotolo Middle School of Batavia.

Rotolo was principal of the Louise White school when Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke was a student there.

“He had a far-reaching impact on a number of people,” Schielke said. “He was a singular force of progress and goodness for this town.”

Schielke said he enjoyed the science classes Rotolo taught, saying he learned about such things as the elements of electricity through his classes.

“He taught us some stuff that you weren’t getting otherwise,” Schielke said. “Not only was he the principal, but he also never stopped being the teacher.”

In addition, Rotolo taught swimming classes at Quarry Beach in Batavia, Schielke said.

Batavia 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff was a student at Batavia Junior High School when Rotolo was principal.

“The biggest thing he taught me was that you really garner respect by giving it,” Wolff said. “He led by example. I don’t think I ever heard him say a negative thing about somebody. He was always very positive and always very encouraging.”

Rotolo also knew the names of all of his students, even years after they graduated, Wolff said. The two of them stayed in touch over the years.

“Even 20 years later, you would run into him, and he would remember you,” Wolff said. “He was always kind of an inspirational guy. He always saw the good things in people.”

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

Funeral and interment services will be private. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence.

Newcomer Naomi Bosko is running for the Ward 3 seat currently held by Todd Bancroft, who had been appointed but is now seeking election to the seat.

And Steve Gaugel, a current St. Charles Plan Commission member, is running against business owner Matt Dowling for the Ward 4 seat that longtime Alderman Jim Martin soon will leave.

After 35 years on the Matt Dowling City Council, Martin announced in October he won’t seek re-election.

Wards 1, 2 and 5 are uncontested in St. Charles this year.

With one week left before the April 7 consolidated election, the candidates continue to get the word out about their campaigns. Bancroft, Bosko and Gaugel on Thursday attended a League of Women Voters of Central Kane County candidate forum at Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles.

Bancroft told the forum’s audience of more than 50 people that in 2013, Mayor Ray Rogina appointed him to Rogina’s former seat in the ward and he was looking to continue serving on the council.

Bosko said she is running for office for the first time to give back and be at the forefront of what lies ahead for the city, including the First Street redevelopment project and the transformation of the Charles-

Bosko and Bancroft each talked about the Lexington Club development proposed near downtown St. Charles in the 3rd Ward. Bosko said the initial proposal was the reason three neighbors on her block moved to senior housing.

Bancroft said the recent change to the plan to include all single-family homes is an example of the potential for the site.

“What happens with vacant land is what has my attention,” Bancroft said.

The candidates had a mixed reaction to the proposed westside recreation center that is part of the St. Charles Park District’s $28 million referendum question on the April 7 ballot.

Bancroft said he is concerned about the economics for the center and has heard it termed more as a want than a need. Bosko said the center would be a wonderful addition to St. Charles but said the timing isn’t right at this point.

Bosko also said there needs to be more input from the residents on their needs and concerns for the city.

“There are 4,000 people in my ward, and look who’s sitting here,” she said on Thursday at the forum. “We need to hear what everyone wants.”

Since Dowling was not able to attend the Thursday forum, Gaugel was allowed only to give an opening statement.

Gaugel said he is running to be the voice for Ward 4 residents. Gaugel is a lifelong resident of St. Charles and current-

ly is raising four children.

“I want to make sure that St. Charles stays a viable place for my kids, as well as my future, so it’s a place where we can live, work, play and retire,” Gaugel said.

In addition to the city’s Plan Commission, Gaugel was a member of the city’s Comprehensive Plan Task Force and works at Fermilab as the procurement manager for a $270 million U.S. Department of Energy project. Like Gaugel, Dowling has little political experience and has lived in St. Charles all of his life. He is the owner of Discount Tire and Service in downtown St. Charles.

In his Kane County Chronicle Election Central profile online, Dowling wrote he was against increasing city spend-

ing.

“I’d want to create a more viable tax resource by investing in downtown business and infrastructure and using the increased revenue they generate to fund future municipal improvements,” Dowling wrote.

Dowling also wrote there needs to be continued investment in the late-night permit system introduced in 2014. Liquor license holders can opt to stay open until 1 or 2 a.m. for an additional permit fee through the system.

The permit system was the result of talks that began with former St. Charles Mayor Don DeWitte about over-serving alcohol and police calls for rowdy downtown activity. Gaugel wrote in his Election Central candidate profile the intentions of the late-night permit system were good to address those issues, but it has alienated some business owners who did want to pay the city additional fees. The First Street development should help bring new, diverse businesses to downtown St. Charles, Gaugel wrote.

Gaugel also wrote he would be in favor of the city maintaining its current spending level while always looking at ways to lower it.

Residents get hazing training to control coyotes

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Coyotes in Geneva may be facing a new day, as residents received training Monday in how to understand and haze them in an effort to coexist.

Lynsey White Dasher, director of humane and wildlife conflict resolution for The Humane Society of the U.S. spoke for an hour and a half to a group of about 50 at the Geneva Public Works Building, about coyote behavior and methods of effective hazing.

Officials arranged for the training after Geneva residents reported aggressive coyotes.

The city has information on its website and a YouTube video link of the Humane Society’s instructions on hazing coyotes. It also will post a video of Dasher’s training.

From January through

March, coyotes have pups and then from April through September is pup-raising season, Dasher said. Because adult coyotes need to bring in extra food for their pups, this is the time of year people are reporting attacks on smaller pets.

“A cat wandering around does not look much different to them than a woodchuck,” she said.

A coyote should run away when it encounters a person and if it doesn’t, it has lost its fear of people, Dasher said.

“Hazing is a way of changing the problematic behavior of coyotes,” Dasher said.

The acronym for proper hazing is SMART: Stop, don’t make sudden moves; Make yourself look big; Announce yourself by making noise; Retreat by slowly backing up; Tell an adult.

She also said not to haze an animal that is injured, cornered or with pups, but to retreat slowly backing up, while

maintaining eye contact.

Dasher said when adults haze coyotes in their neighborhoods – yelling, waving their arms, using air horns, whistles, water guns, shaking

cans with pennies in it – and to approach the coyote so it will learn there are unpleasant consequences to being there.

“You are not just teaching

that particular coyote. That lesson will spread,” Dasher said. “One coyote learns … it will spread to others in the group and all will start to avoid that area.”

Kids scramble for eggs in hunt GENEVA – Throngs of children and parents waited for the Easter Egg Hunt countdown Saturday, their eyes on the 5,000 pastel, plastic eggs spread on the soccer fields at the Geneva Park District’s Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center.

Children of all ages carried all manner of baskets, including pastel buckets, Spider-Man buckets, wooden baskets decorated with pastel pink and purple ribbons and liners, cloth baskets shaped like bunnies and grocery bags.

Born: May 4, 1924 Died: March 28, 2015 R. Harlan Paydon, 90, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Provena McAuley Manor. He was born May 4, 1924, in Plainfield, IL the son of Joseph and Sybilla Paydon.

Harlan grew up on the family farm.

He owned farms in DeKalb and Kane counties. Harlan worked for Nicor for 35 years and was a member of Wheatland Presbyterian Church. He held a great passion for gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Beebe Paydon; two grandchildren, Stacey Van zel and Michael Kleinwachter; a brother, Dean (Clara) Paydon; and three stepchildren, Shannon, Benjamin and William Fixmer.

In addition to his parents, Harlan was preceded in death by his first wife, Jacqueline Paydon; two sons, Brett and Gale Paydon; and two brothers, Finley and Stephen Paydon.

SAM R. ROTOLO Born: Aug. 20, 1925 Died: March 29, 2015 Sam R. Rotolo, 89, of Geneva and formerly of Batavia passed away, Sunday, March 29, 2015, at Delnor Community Hospital.

He was born August 20, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois the son of Alfonso and Rose (Greco) Rotolo. Sam was united in marriage to Marlene Abrams Fischer November 25, 1964, in Geneva, Illinois.

After graduating high school, Sam proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946. He was part of Company C, 97 Signal Battalion in Europe where he was present during the Battle of the Bulge on December 16, 1944.

Once honorably discharged,

Sam continued his education at Northern Illinois University earning a bachelor’s of arts in 1949, and later returned to receive a master’s degree in 1956. Sam taught physical education and science at Louise White Elementary School in Batavia, later becoming principal in 1956.

Two years later, Sam was prestigiously awarded Batavia’s Citizen of the Year Award. He continued educating both in and out of school by leading the Learn to Swim program at Batavia Quarry Park Pool.

In 1966, Sam became the first principal of Batavia Junior High School.

Sam retired in 1989 after 33 years of leading a loyal staff that were like a second family to him. He was later honored when the Batavia Middle School was renamed the Sam Rotolo Middle School of Batavia. Sam was awarded Kane County Principal of the Year and the Award for Excellence in Education for Outstanding School Administrators by the State Superintendent of Education in 1980. Sam stayed involved in the community after his retirement in 1989 with membership in the Board of Directors for Two Rivers Head Start Program, Batavia Council on Aging, and the Secondary Principals

Association.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene Rotolo; three daughters, Sharon (Tom) Hansen, Kathy (Richard) Cox and Susan (Dennis) Rizzo; five grandchildren, Sarah, Rachael, Becca, Raquel and Sammy; and a niece, Linda Bertani-Johnson.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Stella DiFoggio.

Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at Moss Family Funeral Home 209 South Batavia Ave. Batavia, IL. In honor of Sam’s wishes funeral and interment services will be held private.

Even running out of parking spaces was no deterrent, as parents just pulled up on the lawn or went across the street at Peck Farm Park.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Collectors are searching for antique and vintage items related to discontinued technology - old computers, transistor radios, early television sets, computer games, and even old typewriters, fans, and ticker tape machines. A recent auction featuring furniture, cigar cutters, stoneware crocks, Chippendale furniture and maps was also offering an antique stock ticker. The 11-inch-high machine had a metal label explaining that it was designed by Thomas Edison in 1870. It was used for about 80 years for getting stock and commodities quotes from exchanges. The estimated auction price was $1,000 to $1,500.

Printed letters could be sent by telegraph as early as 1846, but machines were fragile and difficult to use. Telegraphic printers were improved, and by 1867 a stock price ticker system was being used in New York City. Edison’s invention came next. It was the first one to use letters and numbers, not Morse code. By the 1880s, thousands of stock tickers were in use in New York that made stock trades accurate and almost instantaneous. Ticker tape machines recorded information on long thin strips of paper that were discarded.

When there was a parade in Manhattan to celebrate a holiday or championship, the

tapes were torn and thrown at the parade from open windows. Soon the events were called ticker tape parades. The name still is used, although now the paper comes from the paper shredders. An antique ticker tape machine attracted technology enthusiasts at a 2014 Pook and Pook auction in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Collectors bid until the rare Edison machine sold for $2,460. *** Q: I have a large cedar chest with a curved lid and drawers along the bottom.

It has two curved handles. It’s marked under the lid “Roos Chests, Forest Park, Ill., Sealtite lid patented.” It was my maternal grandmother’s wedding chest about 1920.

The chest is 44 inches wide, 31 inches deep, and 18 inches across. What are the best fabrics to store in a cedar chest? Does it have any value as an antique?

A: Cedar chests have been used to store things for hundreds of years. They are often called “hope chests” because they often were given to young women to keep linens and other household items before marriage. The cedar keeps out moths and other insects, but the oil in the wood will discolor fabric or paper. Before storing fabrics in the cedar chest, it should be lined with mylar or polyethylene sheeting.

The fabric should be wrapped in white cotton sheets or washed unbleached muslin.

This strange brass object is an early stock ticker tape, a very unusual collectible that can be displayed like a piece of sculpture. It auctioned for $2,460. founded in Chicago in 1916 and moved to Forest Park in 1918. At one time it made more chests than any other maker in the world. The company was sold in 1951 and it went out of business in 1953. Cedar chests are useful and sell quickly. Many Roos chests are found online and in shops.

Plain chests go for $100-$150. Those with extra decoration or carvings can sell for $300-$500. *** Q: I have a copper box with a hinged lid that is marked “Craftsman Studios” above a hammer striking an anvil. The words “Hand Made” are on the anvil and the words “Laguna Calif” are below it. There is a repousse long-stemmed rose bud on the top of the lid. When was this made and what is it worth?

Wirths moved to California and opened a studio in Los Angeles in 1920. Clyde Hall took over ownership in the studio in 1924.

The studio was moved to Laguna Beach in 1929 and was in business until the 1950s.

Hand-hammered desk accessories, vases and other items were made at the California studio. Variations on the name of the workshop were used, including “Studio” instead of “Studios,” and “Craftsmen” instead of “Craftsman.” The name and location marked on your copper box indicate it was made in 1929 or 1939. The realistic rose on top of the box is not a typical Arts and Crafts design, so your box is not a type popular with Arts and Crafts collectors. It would sell for $75 to $100. *** Q: During the 1950s I attended an Italian Anti-Defamation League dinner in New York. I got a lot of autographs, and when I approached Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees for an autograph, he gave permission for the whole team to sign my book.

Is it worth anything?

A: The Italian Anti-Defamation League, which became the Italian-American Civil Rights League, was active in the 1970s and wasn’t in existence in the 1950s. Mobster Joseph Colombo, a member of the Costa Nostra, was one of the founding members.

The League got the producer of “The Godfather” to eliminate the words “Mafia” and “Costa Nostra” from the dialogue. Was

“We still have a few more things to get done in order to get the fire district in tip-top shape,” he said. “I think I can still help out.”

The race is for village president, three trustee seats and village clerk, all four-year terms.

Village President Patsy Smith, with Mike Turgeon and Don Sheluga for trustee and Stephany Impson for clerk, are running as write-in candidates. Trustee candidate Steven Galloway, a Smith ally, is on the ballot. More information is online at www. working4camptonhills.org.

This election season is giving voters in the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District a first: a contested race for trustee.

Pam Turriff, 62, and incumbents Robert Handley, 63, and Chuck Dunham, 68, are vying for two six-year terms.

The April 7 election is the second consolidated election since 2012, when district residents voted to have elected trustees. Previously, the Kane and the DuPage county boards appointed the trustees at the recommendation of their respective board chairman.

Only incumbents ran in the 2013 consolidated election.

The candidates in the April 7 race share similar goals regarding firefighter pay.

The district has placed a referendum on the spring ballot that, if approved, would lead to increased wages, among other investments.

Handley and Dunham – who both saw the fire district go from a paper district that contracted services from St. Charles to a fully functional district with two stations and land for a third – said competitive wages would help the district retain personnel.

While Turriff is uninvolved with the referendum, she said she supports attracting and retaining high-quality firefighters. To have the highest quality people might mean paying them a little more, she said.

“If I can be part of making that happen, I’d be thrilled,” Turriff said. “There’s nothing more important than people’s safety.”

The incumbents said their experience with the district separates them from Turriff.

“She really doesn’t have the experience or depth of knowledge that I do,” Dunham said.

Dunham has been on the board for eight years. He said he would like another term to see through other projects, such as building Station No. 2 and acquiring “top-notch” equipment.

Similarly, Handley said he knows where the district is, where it was and where it’s going. He has been a trustee since

Smith wrote in an email that her record is being misrepresented.

She wrote she is running for re-election because the slate on the ballot got there by not telling the village clerk or attorney a wrong filing date was advertised.

“I’m running to give the voters a choice to elect candidates with integrity and honor,” Smith wrote.

If Blecker does not win for village president, he will continue to serve as trustee, as his term has not expired.

“If I win, I will sit down and work [to] get some compromises and get the village back on the right track,” Blecker said.

As to having a second attorney at meetings, Blecker said it was necessary.

“In our opinion, Braithwaite is interpreting the municipal code and the laws to fit Patsy’s require-

ments rather than protecting the village,” Blecker said. “We felt it necessary to hire an attorney who is going to protect the village.”

Smith disagreed.

“It was not only fiscally irresponsible to hire a second attorney, but also may have been illegal ... when a second attorney was not contemplated or budgeted for,” Smith wrote.

Andersen and George said the board majority believes changes need to happen in the village’s leadership.

“Constructive leadership is a skill this president has not demonstrated,” Andersen said. “We are tired. I am, personally, and several trustees – we are tired of dealing with all unnecessary trumpedup issues this president has done.”

“Her managerial style is, ‘My way or the highway,’ ” George said.

O’Dwyer said he is seeking election because of his strong financial experience, having already served on the village’s finance committee and the

Fox Mill Homeowners Association Board.

Though O’Dwyer faults Smith’s leadership, he said situations are rarely all one person’s fault. He said both sides should not escalate conflict.

O’Dwyer said if elected, he would work to reduce spending, especially legal fees.

The write-ins allied with Smith said they will be their own men if elected.

Sheluga has been on the village’s zoning board of appeals since 2008 and chairman since 2014.

“I see fights going on, and village business is not getting done,” Sheluga said.

Turgeon said he wants to address the dysfunction he saw at village meetings.

“Patsy can be a bull in a china shop, brutally honest, but she knows her stuff,” Turgeon said.”

Turgeon said he would work for what is best for the whole village.

“Is it the truth? Is it fair and beneficial to all concerned? I live by those things,” Turgeon said.

In an email, Galloway said he is concerned the village is straying off-course.

“I will never refuse to participate in a meeting, if [I am] in attendance,” Gallo-

way wrote. “Spirited debate and disagreement can coexist with civility.”

Safe to eat THE WASHINGTON POST Eighty-eight percent of scientists polled by the Pew Research Center in January said genetically modified food is generally safe to eat.

Only 37 percent of the public shared that view.

The movement to require genetically modified food products to be labeled both reflects and exploits this divergence between informed opinion and popular anxiety.

Mandated labeling would deter the purchase of genetically modified (GM) food when the evidence calls for no such caution. Congress is right to be moving toward a more sensible policy that allows companies to label products as free of GM ingredients but preempts states from requiring such labels.

Lawmakers and voters in some states have considered requiring GM labeling, but only a few have chosen to label, and none have yet started. That’s good: The GM-food debate is a classic example of activists overstating risk based on fear of what might be unknown and on a distrust of corporations. People have been inducing genetic mutations in crops all sorts of other ways for a long time – by, for example, bathing plants in chemicals or exposing them to radiation.

There also are all sorts of genetic turbulence in traditional selective plant breeding and constant natural genetic variation.

Yet products that result from selective gene splicing – which get scrutinized before coming to market – are being singled out as high threats.

If they were threatening, one would expect experts to have identified unique harms to human health in the past two decades of GM-crop consumption. They haven’t.

such as the National Academy of Sciences and the World Health Organization have concluded that GM food is no riskier than other food.

Promoters of compulsory GM food labeling claim that consumers nevertheless deserve transparency about what they’re eating. But given the facts, mandatory labeling would be extremely misleading to consumers – who, the Pew polling shows, exaggerate the worries about “Frankenfood” – implying a strong government safety concern where one does not exist. Instead of demanding that food companies add an unnecessary label, people who distrust the assurances that GM food is safe can buy food voluntarily labeled as organic or nonGM. This isn’t just a matter of saving consumers from a little unnecessary expense or anxiety. If GM food becomes an economic nonstarter for growers and food companies, the world’s poorest will pay the highest price.

GM crops that flourish in challenging environments without the aid of expensive pesticides or equipment can play an important role in alleviating hunger and food stress in the developing world – if researchers in developed countries are allowed to continue advancing the field.

A House bill introduced last week would facilitate a voluntary labeling system and prevent states and localities from going any further to indulge the GM labeling crowd.

It also would empower the Food and Drug Administration to require labels on GM products that materially differ from their nonGM cousins in ways that can affect human health. Yes, food industry interests back the bill. That doesn’t make it wrong.

I have worked with Mr. Lopatin on the executive board of the Kaneland Arts Initiative and am familiar with his manner, views and expectations. Peter has a knack for getting to the heart of an issue or problem – and a thoughtful, respectful way of addressing such.

I have always found him to be very open to differing opinions and a careful listener, quick to find the merit in someone else’s suggestions. His experience in the business world has leant itself to strategic thinking and an understanding of the

need for transparency and visibility of our school board – and also an understanding of the financial issues that our district is currently facing, and will continue to face in the near future. His expectations of high accountability, full participation and respectful behavior are exactly what are needed on our board.

Mr. Lopatin is attentive to the need for a safe, accepting environment for learning – for all students – and is a passionate advocate for student rights and needs. As the parent of a college graduate, a current college student and a KHS student, his personal experience will also provide valuable

insight into the human side of the decisions and choices that face our school board.

In short, Peter Lopatin is exactly the kind of community member that our school board needs to retain – a reasonable, rational, smart candidate who can balance tough financial decisions, making the best decisions with the limited precious dollars that we do have.

Please be sure to get out and vote on Tuesday, April 7 – this is your district and your board; let’s make it the board that we need!

Saints adapt, handle BC

By NICK AMATANGELO editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East softball team started its season off on the right foot Monday by defeating Burlington Central, 9-5.

The game originally was scheduled to be held at Burlington Central, but because of the weather, East hosted the game. However, East still was the “visiting” team.

This potential confusion didn’t faze East or coach Kelly Horan.

“My kids are so great at adapting on the fly,” Horan said. “I think it really helps my kids’ attitude. I think it really helps them when you get into tough situations on the field.”

As for the game, East was aided by numerous mistakes

that plagued the Rockets (0-2).

East (1-0) scored in the top of the first inning after back-toback errors scored East freshman Madelyn Candre. Candre reached base after being hit by a pitch.

In the third, the East bats came alive. A triple by junior Katie Kolb gave the Saints a 2-0 lead before senior Alex Latoria crushed a home run to left-center field to put East up, 4-0.

Kolb finished the day 3 for 4, just a home run short of the cycle.

The Rockets wouldn’t go down without a fight, however. In the bottom of the fifth, BC found some offense of its own, as a double by sophomore Kristina Ahlers put the Rockets on the board. Fellow sophomore Gretchen Schrubbe added to the lead with

a two-run single to put the Rockets within striking distance at 5-3.

East, however, exploded in the top of the sixth, adding four runs to put the game out of reach for good. The Rockets committed three errors, allowing the Saints to keep the inning alive. All nine East batters came to the plate in the sixth inning.

Central coach Kyle Molik lamented his team’s poor defense, which effectively put the game out of reach for the Rockets.

“You get out of there, and the whole inning is a little bit different,” Molik said. “We’re coming up to the plate down two instead of trailing six at that point. And it changes atbats, and it changes the whole momentum. It really shifted right there.”

Latoria was solid for the Saints from the circle. She surrendered four earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight and walking five. “[The team played] great defense all the way through; they always have my back,” Latoria said. “Offensively, we always are working hard to get hits, and they did a great job for me.”

Latoria helped her own cause by going 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

She also walked and reached on an error in the first.

Horan was happy to start the year off with a win, but doesn’t put much stock in it for the long-term, especially with the team scheduled for several more games this week.

“It means a lot today. It means absolutely nothing tomorrow,” Horan said.

GENEVA – Jimmy Morton’s family and Marmion boys golf teammates sound the same refrain about their son, brother and friend.

Morton, they tell you, is a man of few words. Good luck getting him to expound on much.

On Friday, a group effort helped toward that end, as Morton absorbed mounds of attention at an Eagle Brook Country Club reception in his honor.

Turns out the reason behind this soiree – and more specifically, Morton’s destination – elicits the freshman’s loquacious side.

Imagine how talkative he’ll be Sunday, when he takes aim at a Drive, Chip and Putt age group national title at Georgia’s Augusta National Golf Club, famed site of The Masters.

“It’s basically the most prestigious golf course for professionals,” Morton said.

“The venue is going to be what really makes it a cool experience, I think.”

Morton, a Sugar Grove resident competing in the Boys 14-15 age division, began his push for Augusta in the summer of 2014.

He advanced from his local and subregional qualifiers – both at Oak Brook Golf Club – before descending on Indiana’s Crooked Stick Golf Club for his regional qualifier in September.

Scoring was based on a 25-point-per-shot system in each of the first three rounds, with each competitor awarded three shots per skill.

At Sunday’s nationals, televised on the Golf Channel just four days before the 2015 Masters open, the scoring scale changes to a 30-point system.

A St. Charles North duo who cultivated a friendship through the sport, Leonard and O’Sullivan delighted a group of about 20 Mooseheart elementary- and middle-schoolers with boxes of new sticks, goggles and lacrosse balls.

Both North students hope Mooseheart might one day form a school team, but as far as early milestones go, March 24 certainly was one.

“It was really awesome,” Leonard said. “The kids, it was so heartwarming to see them grab their new sticks and play with them. They were so excited.”

Two-plus years after first encountering Mooseheart as a “Santa’s helper” for Haines Middle School during the 2012 Christmas season, Leonard brought her own kind of joy.

Since Nov. 11, after outlining a plan with Mooseheart official Bryan Miller, she and O’Sulivan have taught students lacrossse fundamentals and drills for about an hour each Tuesday after school, toting enthusiasm as well as used equipment.

Out of necessity, boys sometimes used smaller – and pinker – girls sticks. And the group always played with tennis balls instead of the harder, rubber lacrosse balls because there was no proper headgear.

“When we opened the boxes with the new equipment, right away, they were like, ‘Oh, can we use this one?’ And we said yes. Then, it was, ‘We get to keep these?’ ” O’Sullivan said. “They were really excited that they would be at Mooseheart for them to use, not just when Nora and I were there.”

Leonard wrote a series of letters to the company in December and January. By that time, the girls’ weekly routine had morphed into a family affair, with Miller, Mooseheart’s coordinator of recreation and camping, asking that one of the girls’ moms chaperone the sessions.

About the only challenge the group encountered sprouted in recent weeks, when the St. Charles co-op girls lacrosse team began its season. Leonard, a sophomore midfielder, and O’Sullivan, a junior attackman, don’t always have Tuesdays open anymore, but are happily scrambling to coordinate their schedules.

Miller, also Mooseheart’s girls basketball coach, wants to get the students to a St.

Charles game or two this spring to see their coaches compete.

“Mooseheart is thrilled with how successful it’s been and the fact that the girls were able to do this,” said Mary Leonard, Nora’s mom.

Mary Leonard and O’Sullivan’s mother, Mary Eileen, frequently visit with students and beam about their appreciativeness. Mooseheart, which celebrated its centennial in 2013, accepts at-risk children of all families.

Working with the students remains rewarding for Leonard and O’Sullivan, who first joined coaching forces last spring while guiding fourthand fifth- grade girls for St. Charles-based River City Lacrosse’s recreational league.

In her letters to STX director of marketing Monica Tucker, Leonard conveyed that the endeavor marked many students’ first exposure to organized sports. Mary Leonard said the equipment donation – 20 boys sticks, 20 girls sticks, 20 goggles and 24 balls – cost thousands of dollars.

Her daughter quickly internalized students’ reactions to the delivery, much as she did her first visit to the Mooseheart campus.

“We were just driving around and I saw all those big houses that had all these kids in them,” Nora Leonard said.

“We saw all these kids come out and they were so happy, and I was really interested in that.”

Although Leonard and O’Sullivan already juggle plenty without worrying about cradling on the field – both are strong academically, perform other volunteer work and boast U.S. Lacrosse Level 1 coaching certfication – they hope to chart Mooseheart’s long-term lacrosse development, as well.

High school students waiting to play basketball as lacrosse – yes, lacrosse – populated the gym took an interest in the sport, as well. For now, however, the spotlight and the sparkling new gear belong to the younger kids.

“The thing about lacrosse is that improvement really happens soon,” Leonard said.

“They’ve all gotten really good very quickly.”

Sam Pryor considered Northern Illinois the front-runner for her collegiate women’s basketball services for nearly the past nine months.

On Monday, the Burlington Central junior forward started her spring break with a splash, committing to the Huskies.

“They have a really great staff and school,” Pryor said. “Today was a good day to finally say, ‘Yes; this is my school.’ ” Pryor, who wanted to Sam Pryor stay in the Midwest, entertained interest from several East Coast schools.

It was the Huskies’ initial investment – they offered a scholarship in early July, before the most prominent exposure sessions of the AAU season – that truly flattered Pryor, a member of Midwest Elite.

Her parents, Lisa and Rick, former athletes at Elmhurst College and Western Illinois, respectively, joined her on campus Monday.

“I really want to give my parents a big shoutout for all they’ve done for me and

helping me get to where I was today,” Pryor said. “I wouldn’t be where I was without them.”

Pryor enjoyed sound support from her family while averaging a team-best 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds a game for the 25-4 Rockets in 2014-15.

Any familiar face who treks to see her play in the Mid-American Conference might experience déjà vu if they followed Pryor’s prep career.

BC coach Mark Smith patterns his pack defense – “Basically, do not let them in the paint,” Pryor said – after the scheme of legendary Wisconsin coach Dick Bennett, whose daughter, Kathi, guides the Huskies.

Smith’s coach at Beloit College, Bill Knapton, was Dick Bennett’s contemporary. Kathi Bennett runs a similar pack system at NIU. “Sam should be well-versed in the terminology and how to play the defense,” Smith said. “Hopefully, that should help her out, too.”

Of course, Pryor earned Class 3A Associated Press second-team honors for her effectiveness on both ends of the floor.

“Colleges are looking for kids who can shoot the ball,” Smith said, “and she can shoot the heck out of it.”

He surprised me by saying he’s vehemently against it, and then compared it to selling your body as in prostitution. In my early 20s, I participated in an egg donation program to support couples who were unable to get pregnant on their own.

At the time, I didn’t think much about it. I didn’t want kids – and I doubt if I ever will – so I figured it was my contribution to the gene pool without having to raise little humans myself.

I never told my husband about it because it happened before we met. I do know that some of my eggs were successfully transplanted. Should I tell my husband about my donations or keep

Heart-healthy diet also is good for your bones Dear Doctor K: I am at increased risk for osteoporosis. Are there any foods or drinks I should avoid?

Dear Reader: Osteoporosis is a bone-weakening condition that increases your risk of fractures.

Though your bones may seem unchanging, they are continuously being broken down and rebuilt.

(I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK. com.) Osteoporosis occurs when more bone is broken down than is rebuilt.

Osteoporosis is most common in postmenopausal women, but other people are also at risk. These include people with thyroid problems or eating disorders, and those who have used oral corticosteroid medications on a long-term basis.

Some foods you eat can make you more likely to get osteoporosis. On the other hand, some foods can reduce your risk.

There is evidence that several common food substances, taken in large amounts, may be harmful to bone health. I wouldn’t call the evidence airtight, but it is strong enough that I’d advise anyone at risk for osteoporosis to limit their intake of these substances: • Caffeine. Drinking four or more cups of coffee a day can increase

• Protein. High levels of protein, particularly protein from animal sources, may cause bones to lose calcium. This issue is still being investigated, and there is no consensus on how much, if any, protein may be harmful to bones.

For now, I wouldn’t worry about protein harming your bones. Of course, as we’ve said here many times, the saturated fats that come with animal protein are not hearthealthy, so they should be eaten sparingly.

• Alcohol. People who consume more than two drinks per day may be at moderately higher risk of low bone density and fractures, compared with nondrinkers. On the other hand, some studies have found that moderate drinkers – men who have one or two drinks per day, and women who have one drink per day – have greater bone mass.

• Vitamin A. Several studies have

found a link between high vitamin A intake and fractures. Try not to exceed the current recommended daily amount of vitamin A, which is 700 micrograms (mcg) for women and 900 mcg for men.

As for the foods that help build bone, there are several: • Calcium is the primary building block of bone. It is found in dairy products, spinach, dried beans, nuts, and fortified juices and cereals.

• Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps raise calcium levels in the blood and helps calcium get into bone.

Vitamin D is found in eggs, certain fish and liver. Many people also benefit from taking a vitamin D supplement.

• Vitamin K helps blood clot, and (like vitamin D) also helps calcium get into bone. It is found in spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, scallions, asparagus, cabbage and certain herbs.

Fortunately, a diet that protects bone health also tends to be healthy for the heart.

Some colleges allow degrees in three years Dr. Wallace: I’m considered a gifted student and will start college in the fall of 2016. Our family has limited finances, so I’d like to know if it’s possible for me to graduate in three years rather than four? My dad is disabled and has only a small disability pension, and my mom works as a nurse. She has a steady income, but doesn’t make a lot of money. The sooner I could graduate and get a job, the sooner I could start helping my family financially.

– Chris, Boston, Massachusetts Dear Chris: A number of colleges and universities permit students to carry an academic load leading to graduation with a bachelor’s degree in three years. But while such plans appear to be appealing to those concerned about college costs, they place an incredible burden on the student, no matter how gifted he or she is.

For many students, the time frame for earning an undergraduate degree is now five years or more. This allows the student to take courses not required for a degree and to participate in a full range of social and cultural activities.

When you begin your senior year, speak with your counselor about advanced placement courses offered by local four-year schools to qualified high school students. Your counselor can also give you the names of the schools that offer three-year undergraduate degrees.

Be sure to inquire about four-year grants and scholarships as well.

I strongly approve of North’s three-diamond response, showing his good five-card suit and at least eight points.

This way, both players know it is (almost certainly) a slam deal. South’s final bid is a gamble because he does not know where the club queen will go. However, he can anticipate the grand will be at worst on a finesse.

After West leads the heart queen, South should realize that he will make his contract if the club finesse works or the diamonds break 4-4. He should try the diamond option first.

So, after taking the first trick, declarer plays a trump to dummy’s seven, ruffs a low diamond with the spade jack, crosses back to dummy with a trump to the eight, ruffs high a second low diamond, and draws East’s last trump by leading his nine to dummy’s 10.
