Residents learn benefits of container gardening

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A group of Kane County residents learned Sunday that they can successfully grow vegetables without using the ground.

About 30 people attended the “Grow Your Own Groceries – In Containers” seminar at the Geneva Ace Hardware store, 617 W. State St. Ron and Linda Stork of the Bolingbrook Garden Club led the event.

“For those of you that don’t grow your own vegetables, you don’t know what you’re missing,” Linda Stork said.

The free seminar was sponsored by the hardware store and the Just Food Initiative of the Fox Valley, an interfaith ministry committed to building sustainable and just food systems.

M. Grace Grzanek, founder of the area’s Just Food Initiative, said container gardening provides an alternative to the food sold in supermarkets.

Some commercial food may be harmful because it’s subjected to multiple artificial treatments, like green tomatoes chemically turned red, Grzanek said.

Tomatoes are one of the many foods that grow well in containers, in addition to sweet corn, lettuce and potatoes, Ron Stork said. The Storks mostly focused on Earthboxes as the ideal container gardening option because it has produced the best results for them. Earthboxes are rectangular, made of food-grade plastic and contain a water reservoir.

It’s important to use a potting mix for container gardening and not ground soil, he said.

Another difference from traditional gardening is that the Storks cover the potting mix with plastic, then make cuts in the areas where they want to plant the food seedlings. The plastic is really meant to just cover the soil or potting mix and the part of the plant below the surface, Ron Stork said.

“The plastic is not stifling the plant,” Linda Stork said.

The Earthboxes can be purchased in a variety of sizes and be used indoors or outdoors, as long as the plants have enough water and sunlight. When small animals try to rip through the plastic, Stork suggests adding marigolds or spreading dried peppers to repel them away.

Sharon Garlinsky liked Stork’s advice about keeping critters away from the growing vegetables. She said deer and rabbits are a common sight in her Sugar Grove neighborhood.

Garlinksy was impressed with how the Earthboxes work.

She does traditional gardening of peppers and blueberries. Batavia resident Terri Grommes has grown potatoes, tomatoes, squash and peppers in raised beds. After attending the seminar, she plans on trying other container gardening methods such as herb seed mats.

Grommes questions whether container gardening is more cost-effective than buying storebought goods. But she doesn’t deny that local garden plants have a far superior quality.

“I think it’s healthier,” Grommes said. “Nothing tastes better than homegrown, fresh vegetables.”

The Geneva resident signed up for the program with her daughter Sarah and son Aaron after reading about it in the library newsletter.

Stocking did not know before Saturday that the food bank works with hundreds of network partners to serve more than 60,000 people every week across 13 counties. She said the experience made her think about exploring other ways to serve the community.

“I’m amazed and definitely will come back on a regular basis,” Stocking said.

Geneva Library staff member Christine Dalphy also said she knows she will return to the food bank. She has helped out at the bank before through the library and St. James Episcopal Church in West Dundee.

Dalphy enjoyed giving back alongside patrons and co-workers outside of the library building.

“It’s great to volunteer with my colleagues from work,” Dalphy said. “It builds fellowship, it builds community. You have a good time, and it helps others.”

GENEVA – Some Geneva Public Library staff members and patrons joined forces Saturday to make a difference.

The group of 14 spent two hours packing cereal for families in need at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, 273 Dearborn Court, Geneva. They packed 940 pounds total of food, which equates to 783 meals, said Christopher Gillette, a food bank team member.

The Geneva library’s volunteer effort was the culmination of its first Conscious Choices Series, which included programs on positive choices for the environment, food, nutrition and more. Saturday’s event also included a cooking demonstration of nutritious dishes by Rebecca Colburn of Gracious Hall restaurant in Geneva.

The series was developed after Geneva residents expressed an interest in better eating and health habits, said Kimberly Gotches, the library’s public relations and adult program associate.

“When some people think of the library ... they think of strictly books,” Gotches said.

“This is one example of an active experience of learning.”

The library group started off in an orientation about the food bank and prepared to pack food by washing hands and donning gloves, hairnets and aprons. The volunteers took turns scooping cereal into bags, weighing them to make sure they were one pound each and then sealing each bag. Once they had 10 bags, they were boxed up and the process was repeated.

Vikings showcase their depth in victory Shutout streak intact without its starting goalkeeper

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – Considerably shorthanded, the Geneva girls soccer team nonetheless had little trouble extending its dominant start to the season.

The Vikings cruised to a 4-0 win Saturday afternoon at West Aurora, despite missing a handful of key players for various reasons, including Nebraska recruit Michaela Loebel (spring break conflict) and usual starting goalkeeper Samantha Hauser (illness). The victory marked Geneva’s third straight shutout win to start the season.

The Vikings will try to ride that shutout streak as long as possible as Geneva prepares for its spring break trip to the St. Louis area next week.

“You never want to give up a goal up because then you’re a little pressured to score more goals,” Geneva midfielder Hope Goodman said. “But I trust our defense so well. And I trust Sam (Hauser), and then Emma (Harkleroad), our freshman, played really well today. We trust them back there, so we just need to know that we have to do our part in getting the ball up the field and scoring.”

The Vikings led 3-0 at halftime behind goals from Megan Fitz, Allie Mikos and Mary Landry. Landry, who has scored in each of Geneva’s three wins, assisted on Fitz’s opening goal less than eight minutes into the match.

The Vikings’ early season ability to sustain possession has jumped out at both Goodman and Geneva coach Megan Owens.

“We possess the ball really well,” Goodman said. “We might not get goals right away, but we really pass and get a lot of shots off, which is really good.”

“We’re always looking to pass,” Owens added. “Sometimes we’ve got to work on being a little bit more selfish and looking to turn and shoot, but we’re very strong. They’ve been together, this group, for a long time.”

The lone second-half goal came late when freshman Madeline Rapach Lagowski nicely timed a bouncing feed from Annie Waldoch for a successful header past Blackhawks goalkeeper Bailey Ziman.

in her Vikings debut.

“She played very, very well in goal for us, which was nice,” Owens said.

“It’s nice when you have an underclassman who can step up and [play that strongly].”

Owens noted that Harkleroad has spring break plans for the upcoming week, meaning the Vikings could have a quandary in net if Hauser isn’t available for the downstate trip, which starts with a match Thursday against Granite City.

The definition of Samardzija is at the crux of everything related to his shortterm status with the club – why the club hasn’t been able to get close to a long-term deal with him and why it must consequently deal him before his trade value falls dramatically after the trade deadline because of decreased club control.

“Obviously, I have my ideas of what I am as a pitcher but also where I can be, where I can get to,” he said.

“And that’s what I’m striving for, not necessarily where I’m at now, but where I can be.”

That’s the thing.

BLOOMINGTON – Kaneland senior Nate Dyer took first place in the Class 2A shot put at 56 feet, 8¾ inches on Saturday at the Illinois Prep Top Times Meet.

Dalvell Triplett finished first in the triple jump at 45-2 while the Knights’ Ben Barnes added a second-place long jump finish in 22¾.

The Knights’ 4x800 relay team of Andrew Lesak, Luis Acosta, Nathaniel Kucera and Kyle Carter finished first in 8:07 in a race that Kaneland coach Eric Baron said featured massive confusion because several of the fourth runners were mistakenly sent out a lap early for the baton exchange. Baron said his runners elected not to take advantage.

“My guys, I was really proud of Nathaniel and Kyle,” Kaneland coach Eric Baron said. “They kept their heads on and did what they were supposed to go. They’re two smart kids who have done this a lot, and they knew it wasn’t right.”

When I confronted him, he told me he has no interest in having an affair. He said he has been depressed for some time, and it’s his way of escaping reality. I recommended he talk to a therapist, but he keeps trying to justify his behavior by telling me I have no reason to feel hurt because it’s all “make-believe.”

Our relationship has taken a serious dive since I found out. I no longer trust him alone on the computer.

I am also no longer attracted to him, and I no longer feel attractive. I don’t know what I can do to be a supportive partner if he won’t admit he has a problem. Please help me. Losing Trick Count fans would be tempted to bid four spades, but let’s assume South passes.

Afterward, East will wish he had made a takeout double, since four hearts is laydown.

South has nine winners via six spades and three diamonds, so the defenders must take the first five tricks to defeat the contract.

East should hope for two hearts and three clubs. But it is no good discouraging a heart continuation at trick one, because West is as likely to shift to a diamond as to a club. Instead, East should overtake the heart king with his ace, cash the club king, and return a heart to West’s queen. Then West will lead a club to defeat the contract.

One final point: Do not use the Rule of Twenty if you are trying to decide whether to open one of a suit or to pass.
