Sugar Grove’s Vandenberg thrives at U.S. Naval Academy SUGAR GROVE – When he was young, Alex Vandenberg found it tough to fit in. The Sugar Grove resident suffered from alopecia, a condition that causes sudden hair loss.

By age 11, he said, he experienced complete hair loss.

At first, he said, he had a difficult time dealing with it. By the time he reached eighth grade, he determined that he would embrace the problem.

Now, he doesn’t consider it to be a problem at all. In fact, he said he “turned that weakness into my greatest strength.”

Vandenberg is now a freshman at the U.S. Naval Academy after thriving at Marmion Academy. At Marmion, he was the battalion commander for the junior reserve officer training corps. His mother proudly shared documents from the Navy that showed Vandenberg is at the top of his class there. He also plays for the Navy hockey team, performing in a starting role as a freshman for the Division 1 club team. The team reached the American Collegiate Hockey Association national tournament, losing to Michigan-Dearborn in the first round.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, praised Vandenberg, as well as all of the service academy nominees from the 14th Congressional District.

“It’s so rare to see someone to really be the top in academics, the top in military and also the top in

“It is really just amazing. On top of it, he’s playing hockey. He is really an incredible young man.”

To do so while fighting through the difficulties he faced when he was young is impressive, Hultgren said.

“Everyone has obstacles to overcome,” Hultgren said. “His have been significant. … He has taken them head-on.”

If his story inspires young people going through similar difficulties, Vandenberg said, it would be “one of the greatest gifts I could give.”

Vandenberg is part of a military family, but he said most have served in the U.S. Air Force. He said during his time at Marmion, he knew he wanted to go into the military. He said Marmion provided the ideal training for that.

“For the kids who want to serve, I think Marmion enhances the call to serve,” he said, adding that he has friends in different service academies.

“I think Marmion does a really good job of helping you.”

In the military, he said, appearance is standardized, so he was defined by his leadership rather than

the hair loss he experienced. He said his family has been supportive as well.

“I had a very difficult time dealing with it,” Vandenberg said, adding that he was “very concerned with my appearance.”

At Marmion, he embraced the opportunity to become a leader. By his senior year, he said, he realized “you symbolize so much more than your outside appearance.”

“I had kids come up to me and say, ‘You’ll always be the battalion leader in my eyes,’ ” he said, adding that “it hit me hard when kids were saying, ‘I don’t think of you as the bald kid. You are the battalion commander, and always will be in my eyes.’ ” For those who want to follow Vandenberg’s path, Hultgren and U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam will offer an event that can provide some help.

Dick Leckbee, a veteran of the Korean War and former commander of St. Charles VFW Post 5036, died Friday at age 79.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5036 has suffered a loss with the death of Dick Leckbee.

Leckbee, a Korean War veteran who also belonged to American Legion Post 342, died Friday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. He was 79.

Hubbs said Leckbee also served on the VFW’s board of directors and liked to recruit new members to the organization.

“He was a big loss,” Hubbs said.

NEW ERA BEGINS AT REAM’S Elburn meat market moves south of the tracks

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Steve Sroka was one of many shoppers rushing up to enthusiastically greet Janelle Ream on Tuesday morning.

Sroka, the pastor at Batavia Lutheran Church, said he has been shopping at Ream’s Meat Market for 35 years.

Tuesday’s experience was different because it was the first day at the store’s new location at 250 S. Main St. in Elburn. He smiled and congratulated Janelle Ream, who runs the shop with her husband, Randy.

“This is wonderful,” Sroka said, looking around at a store that featured three checkout lines, roomy aisles and items on display much more prominently than at the market’s previous location just a few blocks north. “I love it. This is absolutely fabulous.”

It was a move that was nearly a year in the making. In May 2015, the Reams bought the former Papa G’s location, and they spent months gutting the building and reworking it as the new home of the award-winning Elburn market. On Tuesday, Janelle Ream proudly pointed out features, such as barn wood in the front entrance and a tin ceiling near the fresh meat display.

Customers can park right outside the shop. There also is a lot more room in the production area.

“When we get 700 turkeys delivered for Thanksgiving, we will have a place to put them,” Janelle Ream said, adding that it was necessary last year to rent refrigerated trucks to use as storage space.

She credited the project manager, Mike Stoffa, for his work.

Mark McMahon, who has worked as a compliance officer at Ream’s for eight years, said having a larger space will be an improvement. He said the storage area alone would be significant, but there is so much more than that.

The new shop is nearly twice as large as the old one. It has allowed the Reams to better display the items for sale. At the old store, Janelle Ream said, customers might feel crowded or rushed.

“A man asked, ‘Are you going to sell fish at the new store?’ We’ve always sold fish,” she said.

It will mark a significant change for Ream’s. The old location is in the heart of Elburn’s downtown area, and the

Reams also bought a parking lot across the street. Janelle Ream said there are several options for what to do with the old location. For the time being, she said it might be kept open to continue the summer hot dog cart tradition.

She said there has been interest from some about leasing the space. The old location now displays a sign indicating that the store has moved.

On Tuesday, Randy Ream stood in a new, roomier office and called it “a long year” since the store was pur-

chased.

“I can’t wait to make sausage,” he said. “No more hammers and nails.”

Maple Park resident Jodie Driscoe said she has worked at Ream’s for 18 years. She runs the deli. On Tuesday, she noted the best part of the opening was “seeing the customers’ reaction. … A lot of people are just very excited about how the store looks.”

“I’m very excited,” Driscoe said, adding she was “kind of sad, too. The old store, we had been there a long time.”

Stewart Ream, 22, the Reams’ youngest son, said he recently completed his culinary degree, and Janelle Ream said he will be implementing more food items that will be sold. He showed off a barbecue cooker he said was brand new. He said there would be sandwiches and pizza, “and we’ll step up our Italian beef game.”

“Everything we can do, we want to do,” Stewart Ream said.

Anticipation had been building for months as the new location began to take shape. Stewart Ream said shoppers had been coming to the front door, expecting it would be open despite a sign saying the market was coming soon. McMahon added that the Papa G’s building had been vacant for more than two years, so there was an extra level of excitement in Elburn.

“The anticipation for the town was as much as it’s been for us,” McMahon said.

BATAVIA TOWNSHIP – A 21-year-old Aurora man died Tuesday morning in a two-car crash on Route 31 north of Mooseheart Road, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Jose Quitl was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer north on Route 31 when, for an unknown reason, he crossed into the southbound lane of traffic and struck a 2010 Ford pickup truck head-on, according to the release.

Quitl was extricated and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

The driver of the Ford, Brandon Haller, 24, of Maple Park, was taken to Delnor Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, according to the release.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, a spokesman from the sheriff’s office wrote in an email. The crash occurred at 10:15 a.m. Route 31 was closed until 1:15 p.m., according to the release.

Detectives have not determined whether drugs, alcohol, texting or excessive speed played a role in this crash, and no tickets have been issued, according to the release.

Kane County sheriff’s detectives and investigators from the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate the crash.

Aurora man, 21, dies in Rt. 31 crash near Mooseheart

GENEVA – An 85-year-old Geneva woman was airlifted to a hospital Tuesday morning after she was struck by a car near a shopping center, Geneva police reported in a news release.

The accident occurred at 7:22 a.m. in the 2500 block of Miller Road as the woman was walking south near the entrance to the Shops of Randall Square, the release states.

According to the release, a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling east on Miller Road, and the 26-year-old driver, a Geneva man, didn’t see the pedestrian in the road, striking her with the car.

Geneva police and the Geneva and Batavia fire departments responded to the scene, about 190 feet west of Merchants Drive, the release states.

The woman initially was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva before being airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, the release states.

The release indicated the investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released when available.

Applications being taken for plots in Community Gardens

GENEVA – The Geneva Park District is accepting applications for garden plots at the Community Gardens at Prairie Green.

The Community Gardens at Prairie Green is a cooperative partnership between the Geneva Park District, the city of Geneva and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.

The Community Gardens feature 124 garden plots on the west side of Geneva at the intersection of Peck and Bricher roads. Each garden plot measures 20 feet by 30 feet. To be eligible for a garden plot, all agreements and fees are required at the time of application drop-off. Gardeners are limited to one plot.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police are seeking the public’s help in their investigation of two residential break-ins on the city’s southeast side.

Both burglaries happened March 21 and fit the pattern of other daytime burglaries that have occurred in that area over the last several months, Deputy Police Chief David Kintz said. He noted that similar burglaries have been reported in nearby Geneva neighborhoods.

There is no indication whether one person or multiple people are behind the burglaries, he said.

He noted that the stolen property could have been carried by one person.

About $350 in belongings – cash and a digital camera – were stolen from a house in the 1500 block of Jobe Avenue between 5:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., police reported. A kitchen window had been forced open, po-

lice reported, also noting that the burglar rummaged through the house and left through the back sliding door.

Less than a mile away, more than $9,000 in jewelry and electronics – including two laptop computers – were reported stolen between 7:15 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from a home in the 1700 block of South Fourth Place.

A window in the back of the house was shattered, Kintz said, adding that it was unclear whether the window was intentionally smashed or whether it broke during an attempt to pry it open.

Police don’t know which door the burglar exited through because a side door and a back door were unlocked, Kintz said, noting that the homeowner was certain the doors had been locked.

Kintz recommended that residents keep a watch for suspicious behavior and report it to police.

Claire Jane Garand (Glidden), 82, of Batavia, IL, formerly of Levittown, PA, died peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016, surrounded by her family.

She was born Aug. 6, 1933, in Roxborough, PA, the daughter of Leslie and Catherine (nee Grady) Glidden. After attending Roxborough High School, Claire Jane spent most of her career working in retail for various companies, including Pomeroy’s, Sears and Strawbridge’s. She was a loving and supportive mom and grandma, who adored her daughter and grandchildren and made every holiday, birthday and family get-together a special one. She had a special affection for the family pets Murphy, Darcy and PJ, whom she endlessly doted upon.

Claire Jane will always be remembered for her love, laughter and kindness. Her smile was infectious, and she was loved by everyone who knew her.

Claire Jane is survived by her daughter, Donna Marie (John) Boyle; grandchildren, Sean, Patrick and Caitlin Boyle; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Catherine Glidden, Joseph Glidden and Marie Wagner.

A private memorial service will be held for family on Friday, April 8, 2016, in Pennsylvania.

GENEVA – Geneva police are requesting that residents be mindful of suspicious behavior in their neighborhood after a residential burglary was reported Monday afternoon in the 1000 block of Westfield Course, according to a news release.

Officers discovered a rear window was broken to gain entry into the home, and jewelry of an unknown value was reported missing, according to a news release.

Daytime residential burglaries also have occurred on the east side of St. Charles during the past couple of weeks, according to the release. Most residential burglaries occur during the day since, as a general rule, homes are empty during that time, according to the release.

A common method used by daytime burglars is to knock on a door to see whether the resident is home. If someone answers, burglars might make up a name of someone they are looking

for or try to pass themselves off as solicitors, according to the release.

Police will be providing extra patrol in residential areas throughout Geneva. Although there is no guarantee all burglaries can be prevented, there are some steps that residents can take to lower the probability of becoming a victim of the crime, according to the release. The steps include keeping bushes trimmed around windows and doors; locking doors and windows and securing window wells; keeping valuables out of view; and installing motion-activated lighting and burglar alarms.

Police strongly encourage residents who see suspicious activity to report it as soon as possible. People who see someone who is unfamiliar to the area or in somebody’s backyard or a vehicle that appears out of place are urged to call 911, according to the release.

SYCAMORE – Jack McCullough will be appointed a lawyer in his quest to prove his innocence, but will remain in jail while he does, a DeKalb County judge ruled Tuesday.

McCullough will next be before DeKalb County Judge William Brady on April 15, at which point a timeline will be set for the conclusion of McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief. Brady cannot make any rulings, however, until McCullough has had a chance to talk to a lawyer.

Members of both the McCullough and Ridulph families watched as McCullough made his first courtroom appearance since DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack announced he believes McCullough is innocent of the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph.

McCullough will be appointed an attorney by the end of the week to help him through the rest of his post-conviction proceedings, Brady said. McCullough has been steadfast in maintaining his innocence since his 2011 arrest, a claim he reiterated at Tuesday’s hearing.

Schmack last week responded to McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief by outlining his belief McCullough was wrongfully convicted in 2012.

Maria was 7 years old when she was abducted while playing near the intersection of Archie Place and Center Cross Street in Sycamore. McCullough fell under intense suspicion only in 2008 after his half-sister Jan Tessier came forward to tell investigators that her mother had implicated McCullough in the crime in a deathbed confession.

After months of poring over evidence related to Maria Ridulph’s disappearance, including information barred from being introduced during trial, Schmack said Friday that newly obtained AT&T phone records placed McCullough in Rockford at the time Maria was reported to have gone missing.

Schmack also alleged his predecessor, Clay Campbell, bypassed his ethical obligations and knowingly allowed false testimony that placed Maria’s abduction earlier in the day. Prosecutorial misconduct on behalf of Campbell and his team is something McCullough’s stepdaughter, Janey O’Connor, said she has suspected all along.

“They needed memories and emotions of children 55-plus years later talking about when they had dinner to change that timeline,” O’Connor said.

“But to change that timeline of the abduction, you have to discount 20-plus people: neighbors, family.”

Police found Maria’s body in Jo Daviess County on April 26, 1958, nearly five months after she went missing.

Worried the man sentenced to life in prison for killing his 7-year-old sister could walk free, Charles Ridulph filed a request Monday for a special prosecutor to handle the remainder of McCullough’s post-conviction relief petition proceedings. However, Brady ruled it was too soon for Ridulph to file anything.

“There is a time and a place for everything,” Brady said in court. “This would be the place, but the time is not now.”

But appointing special prosecutor would undermine the professionalism of the entire state’s attorney’s office, Schmack said.

“It’s appropriate to have a special prosecutor when the state’s attorney or the attorney general is personally interested in the outcome of a case in a financial way, or because he or she is the defendant or victim, or some member of the family or the state’s attorneys office is a victim, defendant or witness,” Schmack said. “Those are the appro-

priate times when a special state’s attorney is appointed, not because other people who are connected with the case disagree with the determination of the state’s attorney.”

Charles Ridulph said he understood the judge’s decision, but has plans to hire a lawyer to represent his family, a victim’s right he said they only recently discovered.

“Your honor, what alarms me the most about Mr. Schmack’s failure to inform us of this absolute right to counsel, is the question of why he would not have done so,” Charles Ridulph said in a statement he intended to read in court, but was not permitted. “To have abandoned Maria is one issue, but to bind our hand and to further silence us is disturbing to say the least!”

McCullough was one of more than 100 people who were briefly suspects after Maria’s disappearance. But the case went cold for decades until McCullough’s half sister, Jan Tessier, told Illinois State Police about a deathbed confession from their mother in 1994 that named McCullough as the murderer. Another of McCullough’s half-sisters, Mary Hunt, was also called to testify about that event,

by McCullough’s defense at the 2012 trial.

“He’s a sociopath and he thinks he’s the smartest man in the room,” Hunt said. “He has done this his entire life.

He destroys whatever’s in his path. It doesn’t surprise me that he thought the judge today would say, ‘You’ve been a good boy and everybody was wrong.’ ”

Can we talk about Ted Cruz?

Special to The Washington Post There still is a lot of foot dragging and paralysis among Republicans as they contemplate supporting Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas). But Republicans can support Cruz and feel good about it.

It is unfair to suggest that between himself and Donald Trump, Cruz is the “lesser of two evils.” For months now, I have been bewildered as to why Cruz and Trump are always referenced together, as if they have some similarities.

Cruz has real intellectual depth, and it’s not just that he has a sufficient IQ or good educational credentialing – he’s a student of government and of history. You can bet everything from his personnel selections to his policy positions would be informed, thoroughly thought through and defensible.

So, what problems does Cruz really have? He has been a gratuitous irritant to his colleagues in the Senate, and sometimes he crosses the line with personal vitriol and engages in pointless grandstanding. That’s not good, but it’s not disqualifying either. In fact, I think that to be effective, a little stubbornness is in order.

Some claim that Cruz is a phony; that he’s really not belligerent but acts that way so he will be viewed as an outsider. If that’s true, then he should get credit for having a good political antenna. Let’s face it: The two candidates leading the Republican nomination race are the two who are the most distant from the so-called establishment.

A more real problem for Cruz is that some voters, particularly women, think he comes across as harsh and lecturing and feel his style and cadence are better-suited for a Southern church pulpit than the podium at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. OK, so there are certain parts of his presentation that need work in order to maximize his appeal. But by all accounts, Cruz takes criticism pretty well and would listen to his advisers.

And as Cruz tries to unite the Republicans who are opposed to Trump, the senator is seeking the support of the party regulars he has long criticized. An artful line by Jonathan Martin and Matt Flegenheimer in the New York Times piece “Ted Cruz names friends, but silence from GOP brass deafens” perfectly describes Cruz’s dilemma: “The decision by so many leading Republicans to remain on the sidelines is all the more notable because it appears inversely proportional to the scale of concern about Mr. Trump.”

I have no doubt the smart people at the Cruz campaign have thought long and hard about the wisdom of pursuing endorsements from “establishment Republicans.” Republicans need to get over it – whatever “it” is – and they should be doing all they can for Cruz. (In full disclosure, I contributed to the Cruz campaign last July and I will do so again. I’m trying to persuade my wife to give, but so far I haven’t been successful.)

Given the nature of politics, if Cruz wins Wisconsin, he might have friends coming out of the woodwork. At the end of the day, people like winners – and in politics, winning begets winning. Despite his flaws, Cruz doesn’t have any personality problems that a winning streak wouldn’t solve.

To the Editor: I will need to consider alternate climes if I continue to hear people (even the pundits) refer to the “socialism” of Sen. Bernie Sanders with a negative connotation.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines socialism as a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

How is this a negative idea?

Hmm. Are equitability and fairness really so scary to people? These are concepts that this American has longed for and strived for her whole life.

Didn’t most of us go to public school? Socialism. Gonna exchange that for all private schools, now? Going to pay THAT baby sitter?

I know I am not the only one who supports Sanders based on his wanting “universal health care” alone.

We can only move forward with an educated and clear-minded electorate. Let’s go. Let’s get involved and begin to hone and enrich those “socialistic” programs to do everyone even more good.

Niemiec, bullpen relay lead Batavia

ccasey@shawmedia.com CAROL STREAM – Kyle Niemiec needed to atone for a mistake. Or at least what was called a mistake.

After lining a ball down the line for what appeared to be a leadoff double to begin the second inning, it was ruled he missed first base and was called out, erasing his double.

Fortunately for the senior outfielder, he got a chance to redeem himself.

Niemiec came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded, one out and the Batavia baseball team tied with Willowbrook at one.

Niemiec drilled a first-pitch fastball over the center fielder’s head, clearing the bases to give Batavia a lead it would not relinquish in a 4-1, nonconference victory Tuesday at Lee Pfund Stadium at Legion Field.

“It was a big momentum changer,” Niemiec said. “They had a whole shift to the left in that last at-bat, so I was trying to keep my hands in and look to go away. He left one right down the middle. That’s a hitter’s dream, to come up with the bases loaded. Good teams take advantage of opportunities and we did that today. Our seniors came up big.”

Batavia (3-0) seized the opportunity to have Niemiec come up with the bases loaded after Willowbrook starter Matt Garbacz hit No. 2 hitter Tyler Kledzik after allowing a one-out single to leadoff hitter Jimmy Roach.

Luke Beckmann followed Kledzik and hit a fly ball to shallow center field, which seemed to be lost in the sun by a couple of Willowbrook outfielders. Niemiec came up and saw the first pitch and he didn’t miss, giving Batavia a three-run lead.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard when 6-foot-6 junior Glenn Albanese hit a triple down the right-field line and scored on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Costigan to tie the game at one in the fifth inning.

“I think that really got the offensive momentum going,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said. “We haven’t had too much of a hole, one through nine, in the order, especially when you have a guy like Glenn that can leg out a triple.

I thought they might pull [Garbacz] after that, but we got his pitch count up a little and took advantage of our chances late.”

After usually reliable senior southpaw Ben Lynam pitched just 21/3 innings, the Bulldogs needed some strong innings from their relievers – which they got, and then some.

er than Holm was accustomed, but he was forced to bring in fellow senior southpaw Michael Fossali in a bases-loaded, one-out jam.

Fossali struck out the next two batters to end the threat and jump-started 42/3 scoreless innings from the Bulldogs’ bullpen. Fossali gave way to junior Ethan Krumwiede, who picked up his first varsity win, followed by sophomore Jared Martin getting the save in the seventh.

“Our bullpen, I think, is the best we’ve ever had,” said Fossali, whose outing Tuesday morning was his first of the season. “I was nervous coming into the game, but I was confident with my curveball and threw it a lot.

I was just trying to get a ball in play and turn two. It obviously worked out better striking out both.”

Willowbrook (2-3) felt pretty good after chasing Lynam from the game as early as it did, but coach Vic Wisner knows leaving 12 men on base, which his team did Tuesday, is not part of an equation to defeat quality baseball teams.

“When you have two really good teams, it comes down to a pitch here or pitch there and who takes advantage of it,” Wisner said. “We just couldn’t get the extra hit today. Usually in high school when you see the third and fourth pitcher on a team, you think you’re in a good spot. It’s two really good teams, though, and every time we play each other, it’s a good game.”

The Bulldogs are back in action at Pfund Stadium at 10 a.m. Thursday, as the away team, against Naperville North.

Long backs the Blues because their captain, David Backes, attended Spring Lake Park High School, north of Minneapolis-St. Paul. Long began high school at Spring Lake Park before junior hockey took him away from home.

Long is finishing high school at Geneva alongside fellow forward Jake Nielsen. Long lives with the Neri family in Geneva.

Backes, of course, travels through-

out North America with the Blues, but stays in touch with his roots.

Long and his former teammates have skated with Backes during summer visits.

“He’s a nice guy. … It’s pretty nice to have him come,” Long said.

The ‘attainable’ USHL: If his player development goes as swimmingly as scouts and executives foresee, every night could be Blackhawks Night for Dennis Gilbert in a few seasons.

Drafted by the Blackhawks in the third round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft after a solid season with the Steel, Gilbert now is a freshman defenseman for Notre Dame.

Speaking before the Irish lost to Michigan in an NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal in Cincinnati, Ohio, last week, Gilbert contrasted the playing styles in the United States Hockey League and NCAA Division I. “I think the USHL is definitely a pretty high pace, but college is a little bit faster,” Gilbert said, “whether it’s puck movement or guys’ physical speed. But I mean, you see Kyle Connor right now for Michigan, he’s probably the best player in college hockey, and he just dominated the USHL last year. So I think it’s a little faster, but it’s not by much.”

Gilbert contributed four goals and 23 assists in 59 games for the 2014-15 Steel, representing the club in its

last season in Bensenville before the organization moved to Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena last summer.

Gilbert still follows the Steel on Twitter and said last season’s group text is “still buzzing once in awhile.”

One of his fellow Notre Dame defensemen, junior Justin Wade, attended Batavia schools growing up, and Gilbert hopes the opportunity to play high-level junior hockey isn’t lost on young fans watching the Steel in Wade’s old stomping grounds.

“It’s a very high-skilled game. It’s a lot of fun. There’s hits, there’s fighting,” Gilbert said. “And it’s not guys that are 30 years old; it’s guys that are in high school.

“I think it’s much more attainable for kids to want to go to those games, to say, ‘I want to be a Steel player one day.’ … So I think going forward, kids going to games, it’s a good experience for them just to see guys that aren’t far in age from them. Yeah, they might be six, seven years older, but they’re not in the NHL making six million dollars a year. They’re high school kids playing hockey, and it’s just as fun to watch.”

Kaneland junior girls track and field athlete Becca Richtman contributed to a pair of winning relays at Saturday’s Illinois Prep Top Times Class 2A indoor meet in Bloomington. She and her Knights teammates set a Class 2A meet record with their run of 4:01.37 in the 4x400 and were just off a meet record when they clocked a 9:42.55 in the 4x800. Richtman, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke about her weekend with Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley. An edited transcript follows: The 3,200 relay was especially ecstatic about that run at Top Times.

How come?

We’ve never, ever done that good, and especially for us to run indoor, all

of us were so shocked. … When we were warming up, we just all had it in our heads. We were like, ‘Wow, we feel good. We’re going to go out there, and we’re going to compete with Rosary.’ Rosary is kind of our rivalry school.

Compare and contrast your approaches to running 800 meters in a relay versus running 400.

Well, for the 800, it’s a lot more mental. You have to tell yourself, ‘OK, you just ran that first lap close to the time you would your open 400 lap, and now you have to run another one.’

So it’s a lot of telling yourself you can do it and kind of overcoming what your body wants to do. And then the 400, it’s kind of just give it everything you have.

PLAINFIELD – Amanda James worked the count to her favor and didn’t miss her pitch.

The senior outfielder drilled a fullcount pitch over the fence for a grand slam to boost the St. Charles North softball team to a 4-2 victory over Plainfield Central in its season opener on Tuesday.

After fouling off a couple of pitches, James forced the opposing pitcher to come to her and then provided all the offense that sophomore pitcher Jillian Waslawski needed.

“People are going to find out pretty quickly that if you put it where Amanda wants it, she’s going to hit it a long way,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “We threatened in the first few innings, but had nothing to show for it, but Amanda had a great at-bat and got the pitch she wanted.”

James’ grand slam came with the North Stars (1-0) trailing, 2-0, in the fifth inning after Plainfield Central – a team that finished last season 26-5 – manufactured a couple of runs to take an early lead.

Waslawski then held the lead, making adjustments and using the strong defense behind her.

St. Charles East 17-9, Wheaton North 0-7:

At St. Charles, East improved to 4-0 with a doubleheader sweep that hinged on big innings. The Saints erupted for seven and 10 runs, respectively, in the first two innings of the opener, which they won in five innings. In Game 2, a seven-run fourth inning provided a cushion.

Jordan Hall homered in both games, driving in five runs on the day. Delaney Devor spaced three strikeouts in five innings of three-hit ball in Game 1.

Oswego East 5, Rosary 3: At Oswego, Rosary dropped the nonconference contest to fall to 2-3.

“I’ll play a 1-0 game all day rather than (a blowout),” North coach Todd Genke said. “I put the guys in a number of pressure situations today. Whether it be hit-and-runs, double steals, or what have you, I wanted to see how the guys reacted. With it being our first game, against a team that has played 12-15 games already, on their home field, I was very proud of the way we played today.”

Sleep labs can reveal sleep apnea Dear Dr. K: My doctor thinks I may have sleep apnea, and he wants me to go to a sleep lab to be tested. What will happen during the testing?

Dear Reader: Sleep apnea is a serious health condition in which breathing stops or becomes shallower. In the most common form, obstructive sleep apnea, the tongue or throat tissues temporarily and repeatedly block the flow of air in and out of your lungs. This can happen hundreds of times each night. Laboratory sleep tests are the most reliable way to diagnose this problem.

When you spend the night in a sleep laboratory, you’ll wear your own nightclothes, and you can use a pillow from home. You can take your regular medications, but the clinicians will need to know what they are.

The lab usually provides a regular bed in a private room with a bathroom attached.

The room is kept as quiet as possible.

A technician first will set up the sleep-monitoring equipment. Then you’ll be left alone to relax until bedtime.

Throughout the night, laboratory staff will monitor you from a nearby control room.

Procedures used to diagnose sleep apnea usually include a test called polysomnography, as well as audio and video recording.

Polysomnography: In this procedure, small electrodes and other sensors are pasted on specific parts of your body to take a variety of readings during the night.

Some things they may track include your brain waves, muscle tension, eye movements, airflow, heart rate and rhythm, breathing, and the amount of oxygen in your blood.

The readings are collected on a printout called a polysomnogram. This is analyzed by a technician and physician. If a breathing problem is detected early on during testing, you may be awakened and given treatment during the second half of the

Audio and video recording: Audio equipment may be used to record snoring, talking during sleep or other sounds. A video also may be taken to compare with the polysomnogram. This may show, for example, you snore (a sign of sleep apnea) only when in a certain position, as when you’re lying on your back instead of on your side or stomach.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has a listing of more than 2,500 accredited sleep disorder centers and more than 5,600 board-certified sleep specialists.

Staying overnight in a sleep laboratory usually costs between $800 and $1,500. In advance of the test, ask your health insurance company if it will pay for the test.

Reimbursement varies, and may depend on your diagnosis.

If not properly diagnosed and treated, sleep apnea can cause problems with a person’s mood and ability to think clearly.

These, in turn, can cause serious problems both at work and at home. In addition, by interrupting deep sleep, sleep apnea may increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and other diseases.

Sleep laboratory testing is a painless procedure, and I wouldn’t hesitate to have the testing done.

DEAR ABBY My oldest son came to me nine Jeanne months ago askPhillips ing my opinion.

He wanted to donate sperm to a black lesbian couple (for a fee) so they could have a biracial child. He told me he needed the money. I told him I didn’t approve because they are lesbians. (Sorry, I’ll be bashed for that statement, but I have to be honest.)

I have a biracial 10-year-old son, so race isn’t the issue. Had it been a heterosexual couple of any race, I would have been OK. However, what I told him was that if he gives up his rights to the child, I, too, won’t have grandparents’ rights. I broke down in tears when he told me all this.

Yesterday I received a picture of a newborn.

It turns out my son donated his sperm knowing how I feel about homosexuality. I have tried hard to always be there for my children, letting them know I love them and doing the best a single mother could do for them. I feel I must have failed horribly in bringing him up to be a better man.

I cannot, in our home state, fight for grandparents’ rights since he has relinquished his rights. I am even more hurt he would share a picture of my grandson knowing my opinion, and I feel horribly disrespected. Am I being overly sensitive? Should I just let all of this go?

That is a tad melodramatic. One can often calculate the chance that a contract will make, but it does sometimes need an “approximately” attached. For example, a six-spade contract that seems to rely totally on the trump finesse is not exactly 50 percent, because an opponent might be able to get a trick-one ruff. But the chance of that will be very low.

In today’s deal, what is the chance that six spades will make? How should declarer plan the play after West leads the club queen?

In the auction, after North raises spades, South shouldn’t use Blackwood, because when North shows one ace, South will not know if it is the valuable diamond ace or the less useful heart ace. Instead, South should continue with four clubs, a control-bid showing a first-round control (ace or void) in that suit.

Here, North control-bids four hearts, denying the diamond ace and showing the heart ace. South ends the auction with a plunge into six spades.

South has three possible losers: two diamonds and one club. The club six will disappear on dummy’s heart ace, but to hold the diamond losers to one, declarer must find East with the diamond ace -- a 50-50 chance.

After winning with his club ace, South plays a trump to dummy, pitches his low club on the heart ace, then leads a diamond to his king. When it wins, declarer returns to dummy with a trump, and plays another diamond through East to get home.
