BATAVIA – Rotolo Middle School recently was re-designated as one of the Illinois Horizon “Schools to Watch,” making it the fourth time the school has received the honor, Batavia Public School District 101 announced Wednesday in a news release.

“The ‘Schools to Watch’ designation reflects the superior work of our students and staff members,” Principal Bryan Zwemke stated in the release.

“The fact that we have now re-

ceived this designation four times is a testament to our commitment to students, collaborative culture and continuous improvement,” he stated in the release.

The release indicated that Rotolo will be recognized in June at the National Forum Schools to Watch conference in Washington, D.C. According to the release, Schools to Watch is a nationally recognized, state-operated model school identification and school improvement program focusing on fifth- through eighth-graders.

Middle-Grades Reform developed the program to recognize middle schools that are continuously moving forward in academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structures, the release states.

To receive designation, the release indicated schools must complete a rigorous process, which includes a self-evaluation, a detailed application and a visit from trained state teams.

Rotolo is one of 24 Illinois schools to have earned the designation, the release states. It noted 16 other states participate in the program.

LOCAL BRIEFS Elderday Center to offer caregiver support group

BATAVIA – Elderday Center offers a monthly caregiver support group, facilitated by Mollie Blum, director of programs for Elderday Center. The group provides direct support services for caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, stroke, head injury, Parkinson’s and other debilitating disorders. There is no charge for participation, and it is open to caregivers caring for people ages 55 years and older living in Kane County.

The support group meets from 1:30 to 3 p.m. the third Thursday of each month at Elderday Center, 328 W. Wilson St., Batavia. The next meeting is March 17, featuring a licensed clinical psychologist,

Doughnut drive-thru gets OK from committee

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The proposal for a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru lane at a Batavia gasoline station is getting the green light from a city committee.

The Batavia City Council’s Committee of the Whole on Tuesday directed the community development staff to rewrite the ordinances affecting the plan, clearing the path for final approval.

The owner of the Shell of Batavia station at 108 N. Batavia Ave. wants to lease a portion of his building to Dunkin’ Donuts, which would operate a drive-thru lane and walk-up counter.

City aldermen voted, 12-1, in favor of the proposal during the Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday, meaning that the plan has the supermajority

of council members needed to override action taken earlier by the Batavia Zoning Board of Appeals.

In discussions lasting more than two hours Tuesday, the issue came down to the economic viability of the gas station versus the effect it would have on a next-door residential property.

Batavia architect Steve Vasilion, representing Shell station owner Harry Mehta, contended that the business needs an additional customer draw and revenue stream to compensate for declining fuel sales.

Jim Warwick, owner of the two-flat residence immediately to the north at 118 N. Batavia Ave., declared that his rental business would be hurt by the drive-thru.

“I need the council to protect me and

my tenants and my business,” Warwick said, running through a litany of traffic, noise, litter and odor problems that he argued would be created by the drive-thru.

Warwick focused much of his opposition on the placement of a trash enclosure that would be located near the property line.

“A dumpster shouldn’t be allowed this close to a residence,” Warwick said. “This project must be stopped … it’s just too darn close.”

The project is indeed close to the residence, which is why the zoning board had rejected variances to the city code requiring that a drive-thru lane be at least 100 feet from a residential property, and that a business property with a drive-thru be at least 50 feet away from a residential property.

Vasilion said it is impossible to meet those two requirements.

Aldermen asked Vasilion to increase the height of a concrete wall that would separate the drive-thru from Warwick’s property, in order to keep vehicle headlights from shining into the residence.

The city staff will rewrite the ordinances affecting the proposal to grant the variances and to issue a conditional use permit for the drive-thru.

The proposal will come back to the Committee of the Whole on March 15, when it is expected to be approved, before moving to the full council for a final vote.

The station is located at the northeast corner of Route 31 and Houston Street, on a piece of property that slopes toward the Fox River.

Shake things up with A Night of Improv

BATAVIA – If you’re looking for something a little unpredictable for your Sunday evening entertainment, consider visiting the Batavia Fine Arts Centre for A Night of Improv.

Chicago Improv Productions will perform its free-form show, “The Collage,” at 6 p.m. Sunday at the center’s Black Box theater.

“If most people have seen improv, they probably think of ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?’ ” said Jonathan Pitts, executive director of CIP, noting that the popular comedy show utilized short-form, improvisational games.

“If you took all those different types of games and mashed them up together and threw them up on the wall … that would be ‘the collage’ [that we’ll be performing].”

The professional troupe will feel out the vibe of those in attendance, taking suggestions from audience members and working them into different scenes and games throughout the evening, Pitts said.

“Each time we perform, that night we’re attracted to different patterns, different repeating lines of dialogue, or relationships or dynamics,” he said.

In a fun and localized twist, Batavia High School’s student improv troupe, “But Seriously, Folks,” will open for CIP. The performances will be the culmination of an entire day of improv, as the six CIP troupe members will host workshops at BHS for students from several area schools.

Those needing help from emergency officials have another way to reach 911 operators.

Tri-Com Central Dispatch and KaneComm – which collectively serve such communities as Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Elburn, North Aurora, Sugar Grove, Maple Park, Kaneville and Campton Hills – have launched the text to 911 service.

Both Tri-Com Executive Director Stacy Hall and KaneComm Deputy Director Michelle Guthrie said the service is a great tool for the speechand hearing-impaired community, as well as for instances when a phone call would jeopardize the caller’s safety.

Otherwise, they said, the text messaging service should be used only as a last resort.

“Please call if you can,” Guthrie said.

With texting, Hall said, dispatch centers are at the mercy of the wireless carriers, so it’s possible messages might be delayed or not received. The 911 operators also don’t have the benefit of hearing background noise or the caller’s vocal inflection, she said.

Because Tri-Com can’t tell where a text initiated from, Hall said, text messages should include the location of the emergency and the type of help needed.

To ensure the text message gets to the dispatch center, the message should be addressed only to 911 and should not include such attachments

as photos or video, Hall said.

News releases issued by Tri-Com and KaneComm offered other tips and parameters: • Be prepared to answer follow-up questions and follow instructions from the 911 operator.

• Text simple words and do not use abbreviations.

• Keep text messages brief and concise.

• Do not text and drive.

• The service is not available to users who are roaming.

• A text or data plan is required to place a text to 911.

• Texting to 911 should be for emergencies only – those that pose an immediate threat to life or property.

AURORA – The Women’s Business Development Center in Aurora has expanded its entrepreneurship programs and services to startup and emerging women business owners in DuPage, Kane, Will and Kendall counties, according to a news release.

Its office in the Aurora Chamber of Commerce building, 43 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora, houses the second Women’s Business Center in Illinois. The first is at its headquarters, 8 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.

The center is supported by funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration and officially will launch with a reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Two Brothers Roadhouse, 205 N. Broadway, Aurora.

Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner and State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, will speak at the event, according to the release.

Marquette offers changes to apartment proposal

GENEVA – Representatives of Marquette Companies are expected to present changes to the proposed plan for a five-story, 219-apartment building on the former Cetron property on Richards Street in Geneva, company President Darren Sloniger said.

Sloniger said the changes would be presented at the next Geneva Plan Commission hearing, set for 7 p.m.

“We did not purchase the land until we made a concept plan and heard the input and felt like it was a pretty manageable situation,” Sloniger said. “I am not interested in any kind of a zoning battle. It does not interest me even a little bit.”

Juby, who lives in the 300 block of Peyton Street.

She is a member of the Geneva District 304 School Board.

Juby said when developers are continually seeking amendments to zoning and the city’s downtown plan, they “weaken the rules, diluting them to little more than guidelines that can be changed to suit whomever’s whims.”

Geneva Plan Commission Chairman Dave Rogers said that if the public hearing is closed next week, the commission would not take a vote that night and would wait for the city staff’s report.

The commission’s recommendation could come at the April meeting, unless a special meeting is scheduled later this month, he said.

Still, Sloniger said, the company does not build small apartment complexes. It builds institutionally graded campuses of 200 or more apartments.

Kathryn Ann Basil nee McLennon, age 70, died on March 1, 2016.

Born Dec. 7, 1945, in Chicago, to Peter J. McLennon, M.D., and Jane Elizabeth McLennon nee Feeney.

Kathryn attended St. Giles School in Oak Park and graduated from Trinity High School,

Class of 1963. Kathy continued her education at Marquette University, where she met her husband, Edward Paul Basil Jr. She graduated from Marquette with a degree in liberal arts. She also completed certification as a Montessori directress and administrator.

Kathy will be remembered as a caring friend, loving mother and sister, indulgent grandmother and constant source of fun and joy for those who loved her.

She is survived by her daughters, Emily (Jim) Wilhite of Naperville, IL, and Colette (Brian Drab) Basil of River Forest, IL. She has six amazing grandchildren, Theresa, William, Rose, Cameron, Elise and Brigitte. She is also survived by her siblings, Peter McLennon (Phyllis), Jane Marie (Dan) Fitzgerald, Mary Ellen (Jim) Pollock and Bob (Sheri) McLennon.

She was also the proud aunt of twelve nieces and nephews.

Kathy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ed; and her parents, Peter and Jane. She also mourned her beloved dog Divit.

Marianjoy merges with Northwestern Medicine SHAW MEDIA Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton has merged with the Northwestern Medicine health system, according to a Northwestern news release.

The merger, which includes the hospital and outpatient clinics, Marianjoy Medical Group and the Marianjoy Foundation, was officially announced March 1.

“Marianjoy provides comprehensive rehabilitation services for children and adults,” Northwestern

Memorial HealthCare President and Chief Executive Officer Dean M. Harrison stated in the release. “We are pleased to be able to partner with the Marianjoy team of physicians, nurses and staff to expand access to rehabilitation care for our patients.”

Marianjoy, founded in 1972 by the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters and dedicated to the delivery of physical medicine and rehabilitation, includes 100 acute medical rehabilitation beds and 27 skilled nursing beds.

GENEVA – In the film “Mariam,” a French-born girl with Arab parents wants to wear a hijab, but French law bans religious symbols in public schools.

“Caste A Wave” is a film about how surfing breaks down cultural barriers in India.

Both are among 43 films to be shown during the ninth annual Geneva Film Festival, which takes place next week. The event runs from March 10 through March 12.

Geneva Film Festival Executive Director Scott Rolf said the event is expanding to four screening site venues. He said last year’s demand left some ticket holders without a place to go.

“There’s only so many spaces per screening,” Rolf said. “We had people showing up and not enough room for them. It’s a good problem to have … so now we only allow so many tickets per showing at that time, at that location.”

The venues are the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, 102 S. Second St.; Geneva City Hall, 22 S. First St.; 25N Coworking, 25 N. Third St.; and Playhouse 38, 524 W State St. “Last year, we had more than 1,000 people, and the year before about 600,” Rolf said. “We never know until we open the doors and they show up. And people buy a lot of tickets at the door.”

Tickets are $10 a screening. They can be bought online through the film festival’s website link to www. eventbrite.com.

Films are divided into eight categories. “Miriam” is among the narrative features. “Caste A Wave” is among the documentary shorts, according to the film list.

Although most of the films in the festival were made in the United States, 13 films are from places such as Australia, India, the United Kingdom, France, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Ireland, Belgium and Malta.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles East High School teacher has been selected as a Project Lead the Way master teacher, according to a St. Charles School District 303 press release.

Michael DeWees has earned the honor for the PLTW course titled “Principles of Engineering” and was selected after a “rigorous” application and interview process, the release states.

According to the release, candidates must meet the following criteria: • Champion PLTW programs and the organization’s mission to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an evolving world.

• Possess strong knowledge and skill in teaching students.

• Demonstrate exemplary instructional abilities.

• Exhibit a knowledge and awareness of not only teaching students but also adult learners.

• Use reflection as an agent of change for the benefit of students.

The release describes master teachers as a “talented and passionate” group who play a vital role in preparing PLTW classroom teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to lead engaging learning experiences for K-12 students.

There are 565 PLTW master teachers in the United States, according to the release.

It notes that DeWees joins Haines Middle School teachers Rob Harmon and Ed Coyle as master teachers in District 303.

PLTW is a nonprofit organization providing learning experiences to K-12 students and teachers nationwide in computer science, engineering and biomedical science, the release states.

An introvert in an extroverted world “I think a lot, but I don’t say THE WRITE much.” Those words have been PLACE attributed to Anne Frank.

The quote – at least, for me, Emma personally – is spot on.

Chrusciel Yep, I’m an introvert. I’m the person who would rather spend a Friday night relaxing alone than going to a party. I’m the person who finds herself drained by large crowds rather than energized by them. I’m the person who generally stays quiet rather than talking up a storm (unless, of course, the topic of conversation is Broadway musicals, in which case I’ll become a Chatty Cathy real quick).

That’s not to say I’m overly shy or I don’t enjoy hanging out with people, or going to social gatherings. I can be extremely talkative with those I’m comfortable around, and I love time with friends and school social events as much as anyone. Generally speaking, though, I just prefer to be by myself. I’ll take a quiet room over a loud and energetic one any day.

It’s difficult being an introvert in a world that seems so geared toward extroverts. Every day, I have to go to school and be around other people for several hours at a time, and it can be very draining. I know as I grow older, the worlds of job interviews and community involvement will force me to get out of my introvert bubble and – gasp – socialize! Kind of a daunting prospect for someone who finds solace in solitude.

However, I think it’s very important that I work on stepping out of my shell and slowly getting more comfortable in the extrovert-centric world. If I hadn’t stepped out to introduce myself to new people or try new things in the past, I wouldn’t have some amazing friends and experiences that I still cherish today. I’ve found the rewards of putting myself out there usually are well worth the risk.

Likewise, I think extroverts have a lot to learn from introverts.

Sometimes it’s good to spend some time getting to know yourself before you go and socialize with other people. What better way to do that than some good old “me time”? If you’re a natural extrovert, I think you’ll be surprised at what you’ll learn about yourself – and everyone else – when you spend some time alone. I know I certainly have a lot to learn when I go out and interact with others, and I’m all the better for it.

Whether you fall more on the introvert or extrovert side of the spectrum, both types of people have something important to offer.

Both are equally necessary; after all, can you imagine a world full of just those who keep to themselves, or just people who want to talk and socialize all the time? I doubt much would be accomplished!

Despite the fact that I don’t say much, I sure do think a lot, just as Anne Frank reportedly said. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately: I may not enjoy going to huge parties, and someone else might not want to spend hours reading alone in his or her room.

Yet when both types of people work together, the world is a much better place ... the kind of world an introvert like me is glad to live in.

The most confusing Super Tuesday ever

We’re going to need some time to digest what happened on Tuesday night on the Republican side.

Donald Trump won the most votes. He won the most states. He won the most delegates. But did he move closer to winning the nomination? That isn’t so clear.

I’ve been looking at Trump’s overall vote percentages to see whether he was picking up support as the Republican field narrowed or whether he would have trouble increasing his vote totals.

Overall, his Super Tuesday results were mixed and not especially impressive. His apparent polling surge last week seems either to have dissipated or wasn’t real to begin with.

Ted Cruz won in Texas, his home state, and in neighboring Oklahoma, and he was the spin winner of the night, judging by what the talking heads said on Tuesday night. But Cruz failed to pick up any other wins in what should have been his strongest region.

Marco Rubio finally won a state, Min-

nesota. He came close in Virginia. He continues to do well with late-deciding voters.

While he fell behind Cruz in delegates on Tuesday night, he should have a clearer playing field ahead.

But Rubio failed to perform his biggest task of the day: Knocking out Cruz. It’s possible John Kasich will drop out, but it may be too late. Kasich probably accounted for the difference between a decent night and a disappointing one for Rubio.

Now, perhaps, everyone stays in, and Trump keeps winning most states.

It’s even possible – though unlikely – that they will carve up the map and each take a slice (with Kasich staying in and winning only Ohio), and we will get a contested Republican convention after all, with no candidate ending the primaries and caucuses with at least half of the delegates.

More likely, one candidate will wind up winning states in the latter stages of the election calendar and reap plenty of delegates.

He thought he could be successful, but never could he have dreamt of what he’s built today.

Steel Beam’s ‘Clean House’ hides secret mess

planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Playwright Sarah Ruhl’s 2004 quirky comedy, “The Clean House,” isn’t afraid to involve itself in messy, real-life situations.

Audiences found that out first-hand in the compassionate, albeit oddball, production being directed by Marge Uhlarik-Boller at Steel Beam Theatre in St. Charles.

Set in a house somewhere in Connecticut, the well-acted play opens with a Brazilian housekeeper and would-be comedienne doing what she enjoys most: telling a joke. She goes on and on – in Portuguese – with no translation.

East stays calm down stretch Saints look for first regional title since 2006-07

Merely seconds before, he was throwing his St. Charles East boys basketball warmup shirt back to the bench after putting it on late in the first half.

McQuillan hadn’t played more than five minutes the entire game against Geneva in Wednesday’s IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional semifinal, but calmly stepped to the line and drilled two free throws to give the Saints a three-point lead with 17.1 seconds left and eventually helped keep East’s season alive with a 48-45 victory.

The victory places East (16-12) in the regional final against top-seeded Batavia (20-9) at 7 p.m. Friday.

“They’re supposed to be free, but that was the farthest thing from free I’ve ever had,” McQuillan said. “For the coaches to have confidence to put me in for that situation just gave me even more confidence at the line. The crowd was definitely loud (during the shots), but the main thing was that it helped us get the win.”

McQuillan has played limited minutes since returning from a broken foot in early December, but coach Pat Woods never doubted he could step up and make an impact on the stage that Wednesday night provided.

It even brought tears to the coach’s eyes when asked about putting McQuillan in that position.

“I want him to be out there the whole time, but he’s just not physically there yet,” Woods said. “It kills me to not be able to have him out there because he’s put his heart and soul into this program for four years. Those are probably the two biggest free throws of the game, and I’m so happy he did his job, played his role tonight and stepped in and made them just like we thought he would.”

The free throws loomed large when Geneva (22-7) was forced to take a 3-pointer on the next possession – a corner look from junior Matt Johnston that was off the mark before caroming into the arms of East’s Evan DiLeonardi.

The senior guard nearly ran out the clock to seal the victory for the Saints.

“You can shoot free throws with a broken foot, so he’s been doing that for a while,” DiLeonardi said of McQuillan with a laugh. “We all trust James to

The two seniors making important plays down the stretch slightly overshadowed a game-high 18-point effort from East sophomore forward Justin Hardy.

It wasn’t all as fluid as the Saints’ second-half effort. In fact, the Vikings

looked as if they had an opportunity to give East another home loss as they did on Jan. 8 in a 62-44 win that saw the return of senior standout Bennett Fuzak from a concussion.

Geneva built a lead of 10 after a Jordan Vedder 3-pointer was followed by a bucket by Dom Navigato early in the second quarter.

The Vikings even took back the lead in a back-and-forth second half, 43-42, when Vedder (13 points) converted a layup with 1:55 left.

“It was mental errors down the stretch that hurt us,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “We knew two or three mistakes could be the difference in a game like this, and they were. We felt we controlled the game and did what we wanted to do. Part of it could have been the pressure (East) put on us, but they got the ball to bounce their way tonight.”

After Vedder’s bucket, Hardy finished a basket and the foul, followed by

free throws from junior Zach Mitchell before McQuillan entered the game.

Free throws weren’t just a big part of the game for East. Fuzak, one of just a handful of veterans from last season’s fourth-place finish in Class 4A, missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with his team trailing by one with 42.1 seconds to go.

Geneva was forced to foul Mitchell after the miss.

Fuzak led the Vikings with 14 points, including four 3-pointers.

“We executed as well as we could,” Fuzak said. “When you’re playing in a game like that, you don’t think about it, but these kinds of games are priceless. ... A lot of people doubted us this year, but we ignored it and put together a 22-win season. I’m really proud of our guys and I’m excited to come watch them play next year.”

The Saints, who lost to East in a regional final last season, are looking to capture the program’s first regional title since the 2006-07 season.

Five seats away, a counterpart dressed as The Cowardly Lion looked on. A couple of rows behind them sat The Cat in the Hat – sans whiskers and hat – doing the same.

Chaos crept no closer than the bleachers during the first half of Wednesday’s IHSA Class 4A St. Charles Regional final. Armed, albeit, with a far different cast than last season’s state tournament qualifier, the Geneva boys basketball team channeled the precision and poise of vintage 2014-15 for most of the first 16 minutes.

Then the third quarter started, and the Saints responded as if someone repeatedly was chanting “BO-RING!” whenever they held the ball. The final margin – East 48, Geneva 45 – stayed in big scoreboard lights well after the game went final.

Getting there, though, wasn’t exactly like watching paint dry.

“We just had to pick up our pace, and that opened up a lot of looks for us, and that ended up getting us the

shots we wanted,” East sophomore forward Justin Hardy said. “Then we were able to overcome the deficit.”

Geneva held a 22-17 lead at halftime, but that was before Saints senior guard Evan DiLeonardi began turning fans’ heads and the Vikings’ torsos.

Asked about his impact, DiLeonardi smiled and made his most passive move all night. He shrugged his shoulders.

“I mean, I’ve played soccer my whole life, so that kind of helps on the basketball court,” DiLeonardi said. “I don’t know. I just like an open floor. I like to get out and run. That’s my favorite part of basketball, right there.”

The Saints split their Upstate Eight Conference River Division meetings with the Vikings, and even Geneva conceded East’s improvement during the regular season stretch run.

Vikings junior guard Matt Johnston, who also showed his quickness in blocking a 3-point attempt and dribbling behind his back to control a fast break, felt Geneva missed its chance to seize and maintain early control.

“We had a lot of opportunities to put away the game,” Johnston said.

“And, you know, East is a really good team. They hit a lot of good shots, and Evan DiLeonardi is one (heck) of a player. They just were hustling all night.”

DiLeonardi’s scoring drives to the hoop punctuated sequences that began at the other end of the floor. He’d corral a rebound himself or take a

pass from a teammate. Then he’d bolt.

“Evan can go coast to coast on anyone, anytime,” Hardy said.

It even extends to drills.

“Every down-and-back we do, Evan’s first if not ahead of all of us by half a court,” Hardy said.

The Saints will get a day of practice before facing top regional seed and reigning UEC River champ Batavia in Friday’s regional championship.

Naturally, there was no hesitation on any Saint’s part to address the anticipation. Most Orange Fever members who rushed the court at the final buzzer stuck around to visit with their muses after they emerged from the postgame locker room.

“I love having home court for the regionals,” DiLeonardi said. “It’s awesome. They come out every game, they’re loud, they’re yelling at the other team. It’s nice. … It’s just a good environment.”

Geneva’s Blue Crue wasn’t shabby, either, especially when the Saints went to the free throw-line.

“I’m sad to see the season end so short, but it’s a good team to lose to,” Johnston said. “That’s a great team, East.”

And a fast one.

Vela shooting for career takeoff ON CAMPUS James Nokes Isaiah Vela wrote down his dream and watched it float away.

Three years ago, the Wisconsin-Whitewater sophomore wrestler held a balloon by its string. It was before his St. Charles East senior prom, and on the balloon he’d scribbled a career goal and then released the string.

The balloon soared high into the sky before it vanished from his view. The 149-pounder’s postseason run also has had a sky-high trajectory.

On Valentine’s Day, Vela was one of five Warhawks’ wrestlers to win individual titles as Whitewater claimed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

After a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship on Saturday at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Vela is closer than ever to making the words he’d written on the balloon come true.

Vela earned a spot at the Division III national championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 11 and 12.

“At senior prom I wrote down my dream on a balloon and released it,” Vela said during a phone interview this week. “I wrote down that I wanted to be a national champion before I let it go.”

A loss in the semifinals taxed Vela’s ability to focus. Only three wrestlers from his weight class would advance to nationals, and he had to set aside any negative thoughts that lingered. He’d draw on the training he’d gone through in the Saints’ mat room with East coach Jason Potter, whom he still considers a mentor and talks with frequently. The hours he’d put in with the Warhawks would make Vela’s moves instinctive in a pressure-packed match.

With his parents, Fran Vela and Rick Martinez – who attend every meet and tournament – seated in the crowd, Vela picked up a 9-8 win against Wisconsin-Stevens Point freshman Joe Crook to clinch a nationals berth.

“I had to put my nerves aside,” said Vela, who is 30-6 with 14 falls.

“Only three guys would advance to nationals. When I got on the mat, I was comfortable. When I won, I was relieved. I ran over and hugged my parents. It was an emotional moment.

It really was awesome.”

know they would get a wrestler with a high ceiling. Vela finished fourth in IHSA Class 3A at 120 pounds as a freshman, missed state his sophomore year and didn’t medal at state as a junior or senior.

“When we were looking at colleges, the thing I told coaches was that Isaiah’s best days are still ahead of him,” Potter said. “He trained to win a state title in high school and fell short of that goal. Some guys would walk away from that disappointment, but Isaiah wanted to be better. It’s something I knew he’d use to drive him in college.”

Because his strength is on his feet, Vela has relished being known as “a takedown guy.”

He prefers to use a series of feints before tying up an opponent. Vela wants his action to keep opponents guessing and perhaps con them into a position he prefers and from which he can gain an advantage.

“On the mat I am unpredictable,” Vela said. “I want to have heavy hands and get my opponent to step to me. I work my fakes with a flurry on the inside, take advantage of any misstep and like to blast away with a double (leg takedown).”

While the whereabouts of the balloon from senior prom are unknown, Potter said the promise of the message remains.

“He’ll be in the hunt for a medal this year,” Potter said. “He’s got the potential to be a national champion and the character to do it.”

Comeback not in Cadets’ cards

The Cadets cut their deficit to single digits twice at 49-41 and 61-50 but never came any closer.

“They never let up and they kept coming all the way through,” Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke said. “We kept weathering the storm and were able to hold them off.”

Marmion was without the services of senior point guard Jon Young, who rarely leaves the floor. Despite being without their floor general, who broke his non-baseball pitching wrist/hand a couple of weeks ago, they managed to win a postseason game and stay relatively close in this one, as well, as in a loss to Loyola on Feb. 18.

“Hunter had to step up and do it and a lot of it fell on Sammy Doroff and Myles Schoonover to help Sammy when he was struggling,” Currie said. “To their credit, these were three games for them to learn and build for next year, but I can’t be more proud of them. They stepped in and accepted the challenge.”

Marmion’s Josh Ruddy scored 11 points and Matt Fletcher added 10.

They were two of the team’s nine seniors who finished their high school careers.

SPORTS BRIEF Fox Valley Hawks hockey braces for big weekend

GENEVA – The Fox Valley Hawks’ collective Cups runneth over.

Things won’t exactly change this weekend for the club boys ice hockey team composed of students from the Tri-Cities schools and Kaneland, either.

A 4-1 rout of Lane Tech in last week’s Blackhawk Cup Combined Division playoff opener put the Hawks in the tournament’s Sweet 16. Fox Valley (247-4) will meet Wheaton West at 1:55 p.m. Saturday at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” Hawks

coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “They’re quick. They make good decisions with the puck. They have a strong goaltender in what I’ve seen in some film.”

At 3:20 p.m. Sunday, the Hawks will begin a second, separate postseason tournament, hosting Leyden at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva in Illinois Suburban Hockey League Cougar Cup play. A victory would put the Hawks in the bestof-three Cougar Cup finals against the DuPage Stars. St. Charles East student Josh Gadow scored each of Fox Valley’s goals in the Lane Tech game. Batavia’s Aaron Karkos made 16 saves in goal.

GLEN ELLYN – The Marmion boys basketball team was in familiar territory at the start of the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s IHSA Class 3A Glenbard South Regional semifinal against the host Raiders.

For the second straight game, the Cadets were down by double digits heading into the final quarter, but this time they were unable to construct a miraculous comeback, seeing their season come to an end with a 68-53 defeat.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the seniors, the way they battled,” Marmion coach Joe Currie said. “A lot of them had to make some changes this summer to get us to go where we wanted to, and they took us to a level that we had to get to quick with being in the Chicago Catholic League, so hat’s off to all those seniors.”

Glenbard South (18-9) blitzed the Cadets, jumping to an early 11-0 advantage.

Hunter Weber, whose 40 points against Montini on Monday allowed the Cadets to rally from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to advance, broke the drought with a 3-pointer midway through the opening quarter.

Weber led the Cadets with 13 points, but the Raiders did a stellar job of limiting his scoring chances. After he scored 10 in the first half, they held him scoreless until there was only 1:23 left in the game.

“They did a nice job of trying to contain Hunter,” Currie said. “And they had some kids that shot the ball well.

Their kids stepped up and made some shots.”

Marmion (13-16) only trailed, 34-26, at the half, but the Raiders opened the

Research on Zika virus needed Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I answered questions about the Zika virus.

Today, I’d like to answer several more, and also talk about how we can protect ourselves against this and other epidemics.

• What should I do to protect myself against Zika virus? In my opinion, as of today, there is no reason for most people living in the United States and Canada to be concerned about this virus. The exception is women who are pregnant, who could be in the earliest stages of pregnancy and not yet know it or who soon could become pregnant.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised such women to avoid traveling to the areas of the Western Hemisphere where the Zika virus is rapidly spreading. That includes Mexico and many countries in the Caribbean, Central America and South America. You can find a constantly updated listing of areas with the virus, and much more information about the virus itself, at www.cdc.gov/zika.

Great Britain has advised men who travel to countries where the virus is present to use condoms for about one month during travel and after returning home, which seems like a good idea to me.

• Why are we suddenly faced with this virus we never heard about before? Because epidemics don’t explode until they suddenly do. Sometimes a virus (or other infectious germ) mutates in a way that allows it to more easily infect humans.

Sometimes it is carried to a part of the world where it never has been before, such as by a traveler. If the virus is carried by an insect, the environment can change in a way that favors that insect.

• Will global warming make Zika virus a

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff problem for the U.S. and Canada? The main mosquito that carries Zika virus is present in 12 states in the southern U.S. A related mosquito is present in 30 states. With further global warming, both mosquitoes will move farther north, since they prefer warm climates.

• Why don’t we have good tests, treatments and vaccines for Zika virus? Public health professionals long have known about Zika. We could have been developing tests, treatments and vaccines for it, but that costs money.

Without enough money, we can’t plan for every possible epidemic, or even every likely epidemic. So public health authorities have to prioritize. Until Zika spread to the Western Hemisphere and began to create serious disease, it was a low priority.

So will we be protected against future epidemics of Zika virus? Of Ebola? Of lethal influenza? To some extent. But the greater the investment we make in public health today, the safer we’ll be tomorrow.

In my opinion, we should be investing much more. In addition to protecting us against suffering, each dollar invested in public health saves many dollars in medical expenses averted. It is local, state and federal governments that invest the most in public health. That means we the people need to decide to invest more.

That is apropos, with the caucuses coming thick and fast. In this deal, though, South needs to get across the table. How can he do it?

South is in four hearts, and the defenders begin with two rounds of clubs.

The South hand was a tad light for a two-club opening. But after East balanced with a takeout double, it was reasonable for South to jump to four hearts. Yes, if North were short in the majors, it would have backfired badly, but such pessimism almost never works at the bridge table.

East was tempted to double for a second time with his 18-pointer, but he was worried that if partner ran to, say, five diamonds, that would turn a plus score into a minus. (Note that five diamonds will go down one, but five clubs by East is unbeatable.

If East had doubled again, and West didn’t pass, he should have moved with four no-trump, which would have shown a two-suiter.)

South must hope that the spade finesse is working, so that he can collect these 10 tricks: five spades, four hearts and one diamond. But how can he get to the board to take the finesse? Only via the heart nine.

Declarer must be careful to ruff the second club high and to continue with a top trump.

Suppose East wins and leads another club. South ruffs high, cashes his last top trump, overtakes the heart eight with the nine, and runs the spade 10 to get home.

Then East will ruefully regret not passing out one spade!

The Washington Post Nicholas Herman and his wife, Shannon Claire Smith, had dreamed for years of moving from Charlotte, N.C., to Washington, D.C. In April 2014, Herman, 30, flew to Washington for a job interview. When Smith, 29, arrived to pick him up from the airport, he handed her his phone: He had an email offering him the position in the George Mason University development office, starting in two weeks.

First, she burst into tears.

But as she dried her eyes, she was already figuring out a plan to downsize.

“I began working like a madwoman,” said Smith, who now works at American University as a Web content and marketing coordinator while also running a design business and writing a design blog, Burlap & Lace. “We knew that in D.C., all we could afford was a one-bedroom, so we had to sell and donate most of our possessions. We weren’t even sure we could keep our king-size bed.”

The only non-negotiables were their pets: Pomeranian Max and two cats, Fritters and Miss Kitty, would have to be welcome in their new digs.

Herman and Smith, who met as students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, were married in 2009 and bought a house in a foreclosure sale around the same time. They upgraded the house with DIY projects, laying laminate flooring, changing kitchen countertops and installing crown molding. But they always talked about relocating to Washington, where Smith’s best friend lived. “We like the energy of the city,” Herman said.

So with his offer in hand, they focused on how much they could get rid of in four weeks. The plan was for Herman to start work and come back on weekends to help.

First, they went apartment hunting.

They found a pet-friendly one-bedroom rental for $1,850 – about three times their monthly mortgage payment in Charlotte. “We wanted a building with history and character and quirky detailing,” Smith said. “Our home in North Carolina was a cookie-cutter house and was builder’s-grade-everything.” The apartment had original hardwood floors, a cute dining alcove,

In late 2013, Kerra Michele Huerta’s design business was taking off.

Her budget decorating hacks, which she illustrated on her Apartment Envy blog using her own 560-square-foot, one-bedroom rental in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, were plastered all over the Internet, pinned and shared and blogged millions of times. Her calendar was filled with design clients: anxious city dwellers who hired her by-the-hour for strategies on how to replicate her DIY-chic look while personalizing their own spaces.

She got a gig decorating an apartment in Paris and an offer for a book deal It all sounds glamorous. But in reality, parts of her life were unraveling. Her marriage broke up and her husband moved out. Twinkie, her beloved Pomeranian, took ill and died.

Everything felt different.

“The energy of the space had changed,” said Huerta, 32. The stuff in her apartment reminded her of the past: “Lots of good things and sad things, just lots of memories.”

Months went by. “I felt like I was treading water,” she said. Finally, she knew what she had to do: clean house and move forward.

In June 2014, she put an ad on Craigslist: “Designer apartment. Everything must go. Cash and carry.”

In six days, she sold almost every single thing in her place: the arc floor

lamp, the cowhide rug, the king-size bed and mattress. (She would be switching to a queen so she could change up her layout.) “It felt good,” she said.

“My apartment felt old to me. I wanted something fresh,” she said.

“All the spaces I was decorating now were completely different. A lot of stuff reminded me of my old life. I wanted to be my own person.”

There were only a few things that Huerta kept: a brightly colored upholstered chair, a small wood cabinet, kitchen storage baskets and some of her artworks. She also kept the two Ikea Billy bookcases on either side of the fireplace: “They fit perfectly, and who wants to reassemble Ikea furniture?” she said.

Then she slowly made a plan. She would take her mid-century-influenced apartment in a more feminine direction, keeping a modern edge but mixing in more flea-market finds and a bit of art deco and Regency. She describes it as “a little Old Hollywood glamour mixed with some New Hollywood boho.”

It was a $140 contemporary painting from a consignment shop she hung above her fireplace that gave her the color scheme for the new place: emerald, aqua, teal and mint green, plus the crisp combination of black and white.

She wanted each room to be different, but she used the same color palette throughout to tie it all together.

She carefully rebuilt her rooms between decorating jobs, devising new

price for a bathroom project as between $10,000 and $29,999. Another 31 percent said their average was more than $30,000.

“We are looking at clean lines and less fuss in the bathroom,” said Patricia Davis Brown, an interior designer in Vero Beach, Fl., and a survey respondent. She is designing many bathrooms customized to make users feel better. “We start our day in the bathroom and it’s the place to feel invigorated. Now we also want it to be a place that when we get back home, we can decompress in the soaking tub or steam shower.”

It may be one of the few spots in the house that is serene. “People are asking for calming nature and softness in there,” Davis said. “It speaks a lot to what is happening in our world today.” Here are five takeaways from the bathroom trends identified in the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s report: • Showers are accessorized. Many showers are sporting their own lighting systems, music selection, built-in seats and benches, and hand showers.

The latest word on bathroom design: less flash and more comfort.

From higher vanities to steam showers, today’s bathroom trends focus on personalization and spalike amenities, according to a recent survey. Meanwhile, the style of the bath is more likely to be transitional, neither too modern nor too traditional. And color schemes are sticking with neutral, soothing backdrops of white and gray.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association’s 2016 Design Trends Report was released at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show last month in Las Vegas. It is based on a survey of more than 450 of the association’s members from across the country.

White was the most popular color choice for fixtures, specified by 90 percent of participants. Frills such as coffee stations, dog-washing areas, heated floors or even wet bars were growing in popularity as choosy consumers request bathroom features that fit their lifestyles.

Get Kerra Michele Huerta’s look with her 9 budget tricks 1. Trade out a tacky bathroom floor without a renovation. Using a box cutter, Huerta cut a $260 vinyl floor cloth to fit the bathroom floor exactly and simply laid it on top of the cracked tiles. The black-and-white Stargazer pattern is by Spicher and Co. 2. Find creative ways to use storage solutions in a small space. Huerta hung two Ikea Ribba picture ledges ($9.99 each) in the bathroom, installing them upside down to provide more surface area for toiletries.

3. Hide your thermostat. That ugly plastic box is a pox on your dining room wall. Huerta covered it with a shallow basket made in Rwanda ($40) from Salt & Sundry at Union Market.

4. Dip furniture in gold for an instant upgrade. An ordinary Ikea Micke desk ($79.99) was DIY glamorized with a bit of gold paint on the legs. Huerta said it adds personality and makes it look more expensive. She painted it in her alley before assembling it.

5. Turn trash to treasure. Huerta trashpicked an old metal filing cabinet and transformed it with a few coats of Pink Peony by Benjamin Moore. It’s great storage for shoes and bags, in addition to files.

The hardware was spray painted gold.

6. Make your own headboard. Using pine boards from Home Depot, an old memory foam mattress pad, white faux leather (www.insidefabric.com) and a staple gun, Huerta made herself a custom channeled headboard. Cost: $200. (You could do it for less if you used a less expensive fabric.)

7. Hide your TV on a gallery wall.

Downsizing to a 22-inch TV, Huerta incorporated it on a wall in the living room in the midst of a group of black framed artwork. The articulating arm makes for easy viewing.

8. Camouflage an ugly appliance. A hulking old refrigerator is a staple in rentals. She not only covered hers in chic L’Amour Black and White Tempaper (removable wallpaper), she left off the unsightly old handles, and now opens it by grabbing the edge.

9. Paint the front door. Building rules prohibit her from painting the outside of her front door, but by painting the inside mint (Stardust Memories by True Value), Huerta added a splash of color to the dining area.

After taking off the cabinet doors, Huerta painted the kitchen shelves mint. She saved the doors for when she moves.

It took almost a year, but after many Etsy searches, Amazon purchases, thrift-shop sojourns and even one trip to the Greyhound station in a Zipvan to retrieve two eBay bergere chairs shipped from Florida, she was ready for her reveal.

The living room got a warmer look.

She bought a Movie Queen Sleeper from CB2 ($1,499) for guest accommodations, promptly having it recovered in $38-a-yard emerald green velvet to

make it her own. A $300 flokati rug from eBay gave the living room a softer look.

Her parties now are usually cocktail buffets, so she doesn’t need a big dining table or lots of dining chairs.

She picked out a small gold bamboo table with a glass top that floats in the room. A Lucite console table by the entry has two garden stools stashed underneath that can be pulled out for seating or as extra side tables.

Upstairs, one of her most dramatic DIY improvements was covering up the old cracked, yellowed tile in the bathroom. She used a vinyl floor covering in a vintage-style black-andwhite tile pattern, Stargazer by Spicher and Co., to brighten the bath.

She kept the bedroom all one color to

high ceilings and a glassed-in former porch that let in lots of natural light. The kitchen was tiny but had two built-in china cabinets with glass doors.

Back in Charlotte, they hosted yard sales, listed things on Craigslist and donated to charity. They dumped most of their furniture, half their clothes, 90 percent of their books and all of their holiday decorations. “We realized there was no way to store a fake Christmas tree in an apartment,” Herman said.

“We watched from our window as people stuffed our tree into their car and pulled away,” Smith said, “just like the Grinch.”

The couple didn’t have a lot of sentimental attachment to most things, as they had bought them secondhand.

“We had no investment pieces,” Smith said. “These were just our starter pieces.”

At the end of every weekend, they posted a “curb alert” on Craigslist and stacked up pieces that hadn’t sold, free for the taking. “People showed up and picked our driveway clean,” Smith said. The last day, “I mopped my way out the door.”

They rounded up the pets and drove seven hours north, following their small moving truck. Inside were two white dressers, a desk, a small table, a sofa, a KitchenAid mixer, a knife block, dishes and the king-size mattress set, and what was left of their clothes and books.

Then it was time to settle in. “We had to think about design in a totally different way,” Smith said. “In North Carolina, we had extra space, and I filled it with stuff.”

They thought of ways to make each room serve several functions. “I wanted to embrace the size and wanted it to be as bright and bold as possible,”

Smith said. “I wanted to break the rules and be colorful and have fun with things like painting the ceiling in the hallway pink.” (That would be Pink Popsicle by Benjamin Moore.)

They struggled with the long, narrow living room layout. To make sense of it, they created three spaces: an entry area with a console table and place for mail and keys, a library wall of open bookshelves (to keep it from feeling closed in) and a lounging area with a sofa and TV. The dining alcove got a stylish new Scout & Nimble hanging lamp that glows copper inside when lighted. Smith painted a blackboard wall in the kitchen and installed a tiny herb garden of mint, oregano and thyme in wall-mounted pots.

There have been new DIY projects: building a radiator cover in the bathroom, painting white cotton Ikea curtains ($14 a pair) to make them look custom and creating a headboard that required the two of them to wrestle $10-a-yard banana leaf fabric over layers of plywood, upholstery foam and batting. Thrift-shop bedroom lamps were updated with black drum shades from Target.

Their small space doesn’t deter them from entertaining. They had 30 for a make-your-own-gin-and-tonic party and a baby shower for 20, where Smith took everything off her bookshelves and filled them with presents.

Last year, they hosted Friendsgiving in their living room, sticking their sofa in the dining room and renting two tables to seat 20. Herman roasted two turkeys in the 7-foot-long galley kitchen. They are hosting the second annual Friendsgiving this year.

Yes, they do miss grilling and having parties spill outside to the backyard.

But they have no regrets. “It’s like a giant weight of knickknacks has been lifted off our shoulders,” Smith said. “We honestly don’t miss our old stuff.”
