Middle school fundraiser honors memory of 9-year-old

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When Katie Cantrell had an opportunity to help select an organization to benefit from a “coin war” event at Thompson Middle School, she said she saw a chance to honor her younger sister.

Madison “Scout” Cantrell died in October at the age of 9, from asthma complications.

Thompson’s student council will donate the funds from the recent coin war to the American Asthma Foundation. Katie Cantrell, 13, is the president of the student council.

“I just loved Scout,” Katie Cantrell said. “And I wanted to do something that everyone could help participate in and pay tribute to Scout.”

Kathy McCullough, a seventh-grade teacher at Thompson, co-leads the student council with Carrie Nothnagel. On Monday, McCullough said the effort had raised more than $6,000, far exceeding the goal of $1,000.

A coin war pits classrooms against each other in a competition where each class tries to collect the highest dollar amount in coins. Students can “sabotage” other classrooms by donating dollars, but those count against the total. The winning classroom is to receive a goldfish, and the classroom teacher will get a pie in the face.

said children sometimes can “get a bad rap, but they have just rallied to support a cause. … It’s absolutely heart-warming.”

Felicity Cantrell said “To Kill a Mockingbird” was her favorite book as a sixth-grader, and she knew she wanted to name a daughter Scout, after a character in the book. But she

said when Katie was born, she knew she wasn’t Scout. “Scout wasn’t ready to be born yet,” she said.

“I’ll say it as her mother, ‘She was a phenomenal kid,’ ” Felicity Cantrell said of Scout, adding that she misses her every moment of every day.

“By no means are we healed from this, and I don’t think we ever will be,” she said, adding that “nobody understands why this happened. It was tragic and inexplicable.”

McCullough said the students’ efforts ended Thursday, but funds continued to come in, including a $1,000 anonymous donation.

“The hearts are really big in this community,” McCullough said.

McCullough praised the efforts of Katie Cantrell, calling her “an incredible student. … We have so many wonderful students, and she’s one of those lights.” Felicity Cantrell said Katie now wants to be a doctor and aims to treat kids with asthma.

Katie Cantrell said the fundraiser was “amazing.”

“I never thought it would turn into such a big thing like it did,” she said. “I never knew we would be able to exceed our goal and be so successful. … I’m so glad and so thankful that everyone was able to participate.”

Jury selection continues today in King trial Judge ruled against off-site jury visit

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Jury selection is scheduled to continue this morning in the trial of a Geneva man charged with first-degree murder.

Shadwick King’s trial began Monday at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township.

In addition to a 12-member jury, Kane County Judge James Hallock seeks four alternate jurors for the trial.

The alternates and all but two regular jurors had yet to be selected by the end of the first day.

King, 47, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen. He is accused of killing his wife by an

unspecified means of asphyxia and then placing her body on Union Pacific railroad tracks less than a halfmile from their home on Geneva’s east side.

Hallock on Friday ruled Shadwick King a g a i n s t j u rors viewing the railroad tracks where King’s wife was found. King’s attorney, Kane

County Public Defender Kelli Childress, made the request and said the site was viewable from public property.

“I don’t believe at this point there would be a reason that a view of the scene would aid the jury,” Hallock said in court on Friday.

Jurors could not consider any facts gathered during a viewing as evidence, Hallock said. He also said King’s wife was found on the tracks in July, and a current visit during the winter would not

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles Police Officer Adam Stander is preparing to take the plunge.

He plans Saturday to participate in the Lake Bluff Polar Plunge benefiting Special Olympics Illinois, according to a city news release.

This will be his fifth year braving the cold temperatures of Lake Michigan for the fundraising effort.

“Seeing the athletes there and knowing they get up every day thinking about their sport and competing, that keeps me coming back each year,” Stander stated in the release.

“Without the funds these events raise, the athletes wouldn’t have these opportunities.”

According to his website – soill.donordrive.com – Stander had raised $470 of his $1,500 goal as of Monday afternoon.

Held at Sunset Beach, the Lake Bluff Polar Plunge is one of 20 held throughout the state to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois, according to the release. Upcoming Polar Plunges are set for March

8 at Loon Lake in Yorkville and March 14 at Leisure Lakes in Joliet, according to the event’s website.

According to the release, the St. Charles Police Department has raised $120,000 for Special Olympics in the past six years through various fundraising efforts, such as the summer Cop on a Rooftop fundraiser at Dunkin’ Donuts.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Elizabeth Doyle didn’t even flinch as Fallen Star Tattoo artist Anthony Burkhead started to tattoo the character Stripe from the movie “Gremlins” on one of her arms.

Doyle, 30, got her first tattoo when she was 18, and she now sports several tattoos. At the same time Doyle was getting her new tattoo, she was getting her first one covered up, which she admitted was crudely drawn.

“It was done by a homemade gun,” Doyle said.

Tattooing is a growing business. According to a study done in December 2013 by the Pew Research Center, more than $1 billion a year is spent on tattoos, and 14 percent of Americans have at least one tattoo.

Doyle agreed that tattoos have become more popular.

“It’s very rare to find somebody who doesn’t have a tattoo,” she said.

The industry also is heavily regulated by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

It requires tattoo shops be registered with the state and tattoo artists are versed in infectious disease control, including waste disposal and hand-washing techniques, as well as sanitation and sterilization methods.

Fallen Star Tattoo owner Brian Eberle said he believes such regulations are good, along with an Illinois law requiring those who want to get a tattoo must be at least 18 years old. The current law went into effect several years ago, he said.

“Your body is still growing at that age,” Eberle said.

“I helped lobby to get the law changed.”

Eberle opened Fallen Star Tattoo in February 2013 at 115 S. Batavia Ave. in downtown Batavia. He has been a tattoo artist for almost 10 years.

Eberle has served a wide variety of customers, including an 89-year-old great-grandmother who wanted a long-stem rose tattoo and a banner with the names of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“It’s fun,” he said. “You get to take what the customer

is saying and turn it into an image. You don’t want to ever disappoint anybody.”

There are tattoos that Eberle won’t do. For example, he said one individual who had just turned 18 walked into the shop and wanted obscenities tattooed across the knuckles of his hands.

“You make your first impression when you shake

somebody’s hands,” he said. “I refused to do it. I don’t know whether they got it someplace else.”

New tattoo shops continue to open. Aurora resident Ramiro Guillen proposes to launch a tattoo parlor/art gallery called Artistic Theories Tattoo and Gallery at 241 Genesis Drive in the Orchard Place shopping center on the

west side of North Aurora. He hopes to open his shop in late spring or early summer.

Guillen said he hopes the shop will put a new face on tattoo shops and help erase the stereotype of what tattoos should look like.

“I want to open a more elegant-looking shop,” he said.

“It will kind of be like a two-inone kind of a business. I want to help struggling artists, maybe interview them and see what kind of art they have and see if it kind of fits our style and the theme of our shop.”

Guillen himself is an artist, and he dabbles in several mediums. He has a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. Guillen said there is still a stigma attached to tattooing.

“It’s definitely been more acceptable,” Guillen said.

“People know what to look for now. I feel that the television shows and everything have somewhat educated people that tattooing can be an art form, not just something that’s damaging the skin or ruining somebody’s appearance. I think the real issue that needs to be addressed is to separate the fact that some people are getting tattooed in a professional environment, such as a shop, which is regulated by the state and the city, versus the people who are getting tattooed in basements and people’s houses by an untrained tattoo artist.”

Guillen said the chance of getting an infection is lower in a professional tattoo shop.

Eberle noted there are many reasons why people come into his shop to get a tattoo. That includes a woman who had to have a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The woman later had reconstructive surgery, and wanted nipples tattooed on her breasts so she felt “like a real woman,” he said.

“Those are the rewarding times in my job, for sure,” Eberle said.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Township Cemetery Board is pursuing construction of a columbarium, a structure of above-ground vaults that would hold 1,824 cremains, officials said.

“We’re trying to look at the future of the cemetery as to how people are being buried now,” cemetery board President Tim Bober said at a special meeting Monday.

The proposed columbarium would be in Union Cemetery, 1206 N. 5th Ave., St. Charles. Cremains held in a vault would require less maintenance and less space than traditional in-ground burials, officials said.

The three-member cemetery board ended the special meeting shortly after it began because the agenda did not include a closed session to discuss land acquisition, which

is required under the Open Meetings Act. The board decided it would include a closed session on the agenda at its next quarterly meeting, 7 p.m. March 18 at the township office, 1725 Dean St., St. Charles.

Board attorney Mary Agrella Fitzpatrick said the land acquisition is tied to the discussion of the columbarium.

St. Charles Township Supervisor John Arthur Anderson said the cemetery board was making this move because 56 percent of people are cremated and a third of those are interred.

Another third are kept at home and the rest are scattered, Anderson said.

The township owns and operates six cemeteries, Union, North, South, Little Woods, Prairie and Round Grove.

South and Round Grove are no longer active locations for interment, officials said.

Elburn continues to seek solutions for police pension issue

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village officials still have few answers regarding the cost of a special election in November to address its police pension issue, but at least one board member already was exploring other possible solutions.

Erin Willrett, the village administrator, said she had not heard back from Kane County election officials about what it might cost to have an election in November in order to ask residents to create a new property tax levy specifically to fund police pensions.

But it was clear there would be some cost, and because there would not be a regularly scheduled election in November, that price would be shouldered by the village.

The next opportunity to have a referendum question on a ballot in a regularly scheduled election will be in March 2016.

For the past month, officials have been addressing the issue.

When the village reached a population of 5,000 residents, it became necessary to create and fund a new police pension system.

Because residents rejected

a tax levy specifically to fund the pensions in 2012, the village instead has had to rely on money used to fund other village services to pay the pensions.

Village President Dave Anderson has said the time has come to address street repairs and other issues that have gone unaddressed.

A successful referendum could solve that, but the issue came up after the deadline had passed to get a referendum question placed on the ballot for the April 7 election.

Asked after Monday’s meeting why a push wasn’t made to get a referendum question on next month’s bal-

lot, Anderson said it was an issue of timing and acknowledged the process could have been started earlier.

Elburn Trustee Craig Swan, a recently appointed board member who is not running to retain his seat in the election, brought two ideas to Monday’s meeting.

He suggested the village seek to collect a vehicle sticker fee of perhaps $30 a vehicle that could help support the police pension until the March 16 election. Otherwise, Swan said, perhaps the village’s sales tax could be increase by a half of a percent.

Anderson thanked Swan for his ideas, although he

mentioned that there could be some administrative costs associated with the enforcement of vehicle sticker fee collections.

He said officials could “bring that back, both of these.” He urged others with ideas to bring them forward.

“We are open to ideas, folks, any and all of them,” Anderson said.

Also on Monday night, board members OK’d a collective bargaining agreement with the village’s part-time police officials.

Trustee Ken Anderson voted against it because he objected to having the part-time employees in a union.

He said when organizations or individuals display a rainbow designation, it gives a welcoming signal to the gay community.

The Unitarian Universalist Society is a welcoming church and it, like other churches and organizations, will use the rainbow symbol to designate that. Walker said one of the key issues for the aging population in the gay community is finding nursing homes or other senior living communities that will accept them.

Church member Page Poris of Geneva said she learned a lot from Walker’s presentation.

“I learned about the difficulties of people who are lesbian [and] gay, and the problems they have when they age – problems that we just don’t think about,” Poris said.

Cathy Carpenter of Batavia said she came to learn about mental health services for the gay community.

“I’d had experience in mental health being a patient, and I wanted to know what the challenges were for the gay and lesbian and transgender,” Carpenter said. “I know how hard it was for me. I can only imagine how much harder it would be for them.”

Geneva residents Lynn and Llona Steele also attended the presentation. As the parents of a lesbian daughter, who is married and has two children, the Steeles are part of Interweave, a church group of the gay community, friends and family who meet once a month.

GENEVA – Ben Walker, a social worker who serves the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning community, invited those in a group of 15 to introduce themselves – including choosing a pronoun to designate their identity – Sunday at a Geneva church.

Peter Coe obliged. He is part of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva’s Mental Health Ministry, which hosted Walker.

“I’m a ‘he,’ ” Coe said.

“Choosing a pronoun is new for me at 73.”

Walker gave a presentation at the Unitarian Church in Geneva on issues in the gay community, as well as challenges for the aging gay community. Walker is a case manager at the Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago.

Coe, of St. Charles, said he was interested in having Walker be a guest speaker because he has a gay son and a niece who is a lesbian.

“Prejudice is part of our family, too. My brother is OK with a lesbian, but not with a gay guy,” Coe said. “Seriously.

Prejudice dies slowly.”

Walker, originally from St. Charles, said he had belonged to the Geneva Unitarian Church and was glad to be back for the program. Walker said clinicians ask what pronoun is appropriate to make their clients more comfortable when they are in therapy with members of the gay community in Chicago.

“It’s a complex issue,” Walker said.

He said one of the issues among those who don’t want to offend a member of the gay community is a type of social paralysis – diversity fatigue – creating a fear they will say something offensive.

Instead of having “cultural competence,” Walker said the concept of “cultural humility” is more important.

asloboda@shawmedia.com Someone purporting to be an agent with the Internal Revenue Service last week threatened a Kane County man with arrest unless he could provide the agency with a “substantial monetary amount” to fix a tax problem, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

Neither the Kaneville Township man nor a Campton Township woman who reported a similar experience lost money in the scam, which started with automated calls claiming to be from the IRS, according to sheriff’s reports.

In a news release issued last month, the IRS advised taxpayers against giving money or personal information as a result of phone calls or emails claiming to be from the agency.

The scams are becoming more common and are among the “Dirty Dozen” tax scams highlighted by the IRS, according to the release.

“The IRS has seen a surge of these phone scams in recent months as scam artists threaten police arrest, deportation, license revocation and other things,” the release states. “The IRS reminds taxpayers to guard against all sorts of con games that arise during any filing season.”

She reportedly hung up after he told her he knew where she lived, and he was going to come to her residence and meet with her.

Similarly, the Kaneville Township man – who was contacted about supposed audited tax returns over a seven-year period – didn’t get an answer when he asked about the circumstances of the audit, according to the sheriff’s report.

Instead, he was told the IRS would send someone to his house and arrest him unless he could provide the agency with a “substantial monetary amount,” according to the report.

Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email that people should not provide any personal information over the phone.

“Anytime someone gets a phone call asking for money or information, you should always ask the caller to mail you information,” he wrote.

“If the person who is calling does not know the spelling of your name or your address then they probably are not legitimate.”

The deadline for filing federal income tax returns is April 15.

Springfield renews assault on transparency Here we go again.

Some lawmakers in Springfield again are taking aim at making government less transparent.

Republican state Rep. Joe Sosnowski of Rockford has filed House Bill 261. If passed, it would end the publication of all public notices in newspapers in favor of government websites. The legislation states when a governmental unit is required to provide notice by publication in a newspaper by law, order of court, or contract, the governmental unit may publish the notice on an official government website instead of in a newspaper.

You might recall a similar assault on transparency occurred in 2011, when a similar bill was filed. It was unsuccessful.

Proponents of the bill said it would save governments money. The trade-off might seem sensible, but a closer look exposes the legislation for what it is: a stealthy assault on open government under the guise of saving money.

Newspapers, of course, have a vested interest in this matter: The bill would take revenue from most newspapers.

For decades, however, public notices have been printed in newspapers for a good reason: to provide the greatest verifiable public exposure for the money spent. (Public notices are billed at a discounted ad rate, by the way).

The audience provided by a local newspaper dwarfs the number of readers on a local government website. The legislation’s flaws become more apparent with the realization many people still don’t use or have access to the Internet, especially the poor, the

elderly, minorities and the disabled.

Ample proof exists that local governments blatantly disregard the law when it comes to posting information online. A recent audit conducted by the Citizens Advocacy Center studied more than 750 public body websites in Illinois. In cases where local governments already are required by law to post information on their websites, the compliance rates were abysmal. Only 73 percent complied with posting notices of upcoming meetings; a mere 57 percent complied with posting proposed meeting agendas; and less than half – 48 percent – complied with posting approved meeting minutes.

And remember Illinois has an excessive number of taxing bodies. Citizens would have to check each one to monitor legal ads, which provide notice of such things as public meetings, budget hearings and government expenditures. That’s much less efficient for the public than having a one-stop source for public notices – the local newspaper.

For people who use the Internet, Illinois newspapers (including this one) already offer a free, online public notice service. Visit www. publicnoticeillinois.com to search for public notices from this community and many others.

HB 261 is sitting in the House Counties and Townships Committee. That’s where it should die. The bill is a risky step backward for the interests of open, honest, above board government.

In Illinois, it’s absolutely the wrong step to take.

take European Union and NATO expansion off the table and emphasize that its goal is a nonaligned Ukraine that does not threaten Russia. The United States and its allies should also work with Mr. Putin to rescue Ukraine’s economy, a goal that is clearly in everyone’s interest. It is essential that Russia help end the fighting in eastern Ukraine and that Kiev regain control over that region.

Still, the provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk should be given substantial autonomy, and protection for Russian language

rights should be a top priority.

Crimea, a casualty of the West’s attempt to march NATO and the European Union up to Russia’s doorstep, is surely lost for good. It is time to end that imprudent policy before more damage is done – to Ukraine and to relations between Russia and the West.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com HOFFMAN ESTATES – Maybe it was the shorter commute home or the sudden lack of itinerary for the rest of the week, but Geneva girls basketball players and fans lingered slightly longer than their New Trier counterparts on Monday.

The way Vikings senior forward Janie McCloughan saw it – first through bleary eyes, then smiling ones – Geneva shouldn’t haved sulked for long after a season-ending 57-49 loss to the Trevians in the Class 4A Conant Supersectional.

“As a team, we overcome a ton between injuries and whatnot, and I think in that fourth quarter, it kind of summed this whole season up, you know,” McCloughan said. “Down by nine at one point [in the second half] and then we’re down by one.

“It’s really hard right now because that’s my last high school game and I’m definitely overcome with emotions, but ultimately, it’s hard to be really, really sad. Because we went downstate last year and we had an incredible run this year, and you know, you have to be happy with everything that we did. And I know I am. And I’m so proud of my girls. It’s just an awesome run.”

Geneva (23-7) endured a scoring drought of just over four minutes late in the fourth quarter, helping pave the way for 30-1 New Trier, which advanced to the IHSA state semifinals for the first time in eight seasons.

The 57-49 final remained on the scoreboard well after both teams left, but again, Geneva didn’t shudder.

“Despite the outcome, I think we definitely went out with a bang,” McCloughan said. “We played as hard as we could, and that’s all we could ask for.”

Batavia late push falls short as DeKalb claims quarterfinal win

Which of these is not like the other? DeKalb, based on conference affiliation and geography, is the obvious outlier, but on Monday, the Barbs’ boys basketball team showed it belongs in the ballyhooed IHSA Class 4A Geneva Regional, thumping Batavia, 7557, in a first-round matchup.

Despite a banner season that included a Northern Illinois Big 12 East title, the fourth-seeded Barbs entered the week mostly under the radar.

“I told [the players], we’re the odd man in this regional,” said DeKalb coach Al Biancalana, whose squad advances to face top-seeded Geneva tonight in a regional semifinal.

“All of these other teams know each other real, real well, and not a lot of people know a lot about us. And you can talk about all the other things, that we’re way out there in DeKalb. But we’ve got as good of a basketball team as anybody, and that’s the way the kids feel. And as long as they feel like that and we come out focused and organized, great things can happen for us.”

The Barbs scorched Batavia’s defense in the first quarter, going 9 for 9 from the floor until a miss in the closing seconds of the quarter, by which point the Barbs (22-7) led, 21-12.

Another 21-point quarter in the second put the Barbs ahead, 42-29, at halftime. Batavia senior forward Chasen Peez credited DeKalb’s terrific shooting but lamented his team’s role in the Barbs’ start.

“It goes both ways,” Peez said. “Sometimes you have a really great shooting night, but I put the fault on us. We needed to push them out, make them dribble more instead of getting a lot of set shots because I think that’s

DeKalb swelled its lead to 18 points in the third quarter before an inspired Batavia push, spanning the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth, livened up the Bulldogs’ crowd. Batavia surged to within 54-49 on a Peez basket at the 7:20 mark of the fourth quarter.

Batavia’s rally was interrupted late in the third quarter when coach Jim Nazos was called for an untimely technical foul with his team trailing by seven.

Nazos regretted haggling over whether he was in the coach’s box, but was confounded by the call.

“I didn’t swear, I didn’t show anyone up, I certainly wasn’t animated on the floor,” Nazos said. “Now that’s my second ‘T’ in 17 years of coaching. Seventeen years. And the first one, I tried to get.”

After Batavia drew within five points early in the fourth, a 9-0 Barbs burst replenished DeKalb’s cushion, with Michael Pollack pocketing the last seven of those points.

Both teams received firstrate individual performances, with Peez scoring a gamehigh 28 points for Batavia and Pollack adding 27 for DeKalb.

Nazos was proud of the determination exhibited by Peez, and said “I can’t get

over not being able to coach these seniors again.”

“I told Chasen, ‘I think you were the best player in the state tonight,’ ” Nazos said. “… For the last month and a half, he’s been one of our best practice players, one of our hardest workers, and it’s translated into his production on the court. And he’s going to be a very nice college player.”

Standout junior guard Canaan Coffey, who left the Bulldogs’ regular-season finale with a shoulder injury, “gutted it out,” Nazos said, but struggled with his shot.

Kamontez Thomas had nine points and Eddie Golden added eight off the bench for the Bulldogs.

Batavia (15-15) appeared headed for its first winning record under Nazos in his third year at the helm before a late-season slump against tough competition knocked the Bulldogs to .500.

As the final minute ticked off Monday, a bleary-eyed Peez watched from the bench, clapping vigorously for his teammates to keep battling on defense, even with the game well out of reach.

“I love these boys to death,” Peez said. “Been playing with them since, like, fifth grade and getting special bonds with some of them. It was just great to get all the seniors in and let them play for a little bit, last time in a Batavia uniform. Just a lot of love.”

“I thought we met the physicality,” Johnson said. “I thought the boys played really hard and we did some nice things defensively.”

The Warriors shot from the

3-point line early and often against Kaneland – going one stretch of having five straight made baskets coming from beyond the arc.

“We knew they were good

shooters and they’re tough to guard,” Johnson said. “I think that’s a credit to their head coach. He gets them to play really hard and really physical. We knew they could shoot

and we lost them a couple times, but for the most part, I thought we played pretty good defense.”

The Knights came into the game having lost five of their final six regular-season games. They had a five-game losing streak snapped with a crucial win over Sterling in the regular-season finale.

“That game at Sterling was huge because it was senior night and we needed that ‘W,’ ” Johnson said. “It was big and it was big to win tonight and now we have to prepare for Burlington Central, who’s a [heck] of a team and get ready to play them on their home floor. You just want to make it to the next day.”

HAMPSHIRE – Kaneland boys basketball coach Brian Johnson said his Knights had struggled at the free-throw line this season.

Their performance down the stretch Monday sure didn’t seem like it.

The Knights went 12 for 14 in the final three minutes to secure a 67-53 win over Wheaton Academy in the first round of the IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Regional.

“That’s big,” Johnson said of the strong performance from the line late. “I thought Mark (Lilly) was big at the free-throw line and sealed the deal. That’s something we’ve struggled with all year and it was nice in the end to get it done.”

Junior Ryan David scored a game-high 17 points for the Knights and Lilly added 15, including 8 for 9 from the freethrow line. Connor Fedderly added eight points for the Knights and went 5 for 6 from the line in the final three minutes.

As a team, the Knights finished 24 for 31 from the line.

With the win, No. 3 seeded Kaneland (13-15) advanced to play at No. 2 Burlington Central at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Warriors jumped out with the early lead, taking an 8-3 advantage in the first quarter.

That’s when Kaneland answered.

The Knights rattled off a 12-0 run that spanned into the second quarter – capped by a free throw from Mitchel Groen – and they never relinquished the lead the rest of the night.

Swimmers lobby for more to jump in Two Batavians with a limited history of interaction dove into the same New Trier pool within moments of one another at Saturday’s IHSA boys swimming state finals.

Marmion senior Andrew Kasper and West Chicago/ Batavia co-op freshman Garrett Clasen might not have realized it, but they shared much more than chlorinated Winnetka water then.

Ambassadorship often goes unspoken, so perhaps that made sense.

Reflecting on their respective seasons, Kasper and Clasen both had occasion to address the future. In both cases, that likely will involve speaking to others about the perks of joining them in a swim cap.

“Not very many people care much about swimming at school,” said Clasen, who identified five other Batavia athletes who competed with the co-op this season.

That’s certainly not the vibe at tradition-rich Marmion, although a turnout of just nine Cadets in 2014-15 has coach Bill Schalz poised to do some offseason stumping for the program and school.

His most seasoned veteran is ready to give the spiel, too.

“No high school student is really going to say, ‘This school is amazing, [by himself]’ ” Kasper said. “So you kind of want to go to more of the parents. The parents are going to say, ‘Oh, the education is amazing. The academics. The teachers.’ So that’s kind of where we’re getting at right now.”

Kasper took 10th in the 200-yard freestyle consolation finals, one event before Clasen finished 11th in the 200 individual medley.

Clasen called it a “really, really fun meet” despite the pressure, which surely must have been music to Kasper’s ears.

“This one goes out to the younger kids: Definitely having fun, that’s so key,” Kasper said. “Have fun with the sport that you love. … Honestly, it made me who I am today. It built character for me. It gave me more integrity, and everything I really strive for other people to be.”

Batavia boys and girls swimmers happily have capitalized on the opportunity to compete with a full team for the past two school years. West Chicago entered the Upstate Eight Conference in 2013-14, and Batavia soon emerged as a co-op partner.

Clasen said several new Batavia girls students already

have signed up for the fall 2015 season. His 4-year-old sister, Gabby, is a bit too young for the moment, but she also recently opted to get exposure in the sport with swim lessons.

To be sure, Gabby Clasen will get no argument from her brother.

“I just like the whole sport in general,” Garrett Clasen said. “The community. The races. Everything.”

Mosquera to Bear down: St. Charles East senior middle hitter Mikaela Mosquera considered a handful of other women’s volleyball programs before committing Sunday night to Missouri State.

Now that she’s officially a Bear, it’s easy for Mosquera to wonder how she ever entertained another suitor.

“With the personality of the coaches and the players and how welcoming they were, it just felt like home when I stepped on campus,”

Mosquera said. “It felt right.”

Mosquera visited the Springfield, Missouri school late last month after also seeing such schools as Nebraska-Omaha and Sacred Heart.

At Missouri State, she’ll eventually be joined by St. Francis junior setter Daniele Messa, a Sports Performance club teammate Mosquera said committed to the school about a month ago.

Club practices and tournaments since the end of her final East season in November have helped Mosquera hone her skills for the college game.

“Definitely playing together with my team and improving every day in practice,” Mosquera said. “Every rep is focusing on getting better.”

ACC routs Montini to set up battle with Marmion

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Playing up-tempo and consistently getting open looks, the Aurora Central Catholic boys basketball team’s big third quarter helped rout Montini, 64-42, on Monday night in the IHSA Class 3A IMSA Regional opening game.

The regional quarterfinal win earned the Chargers (1314) a date with Marmion in tonight’s regional semifinal.

ACC doubled up the Broncos, 34-17, in the first half, hitting its stride from behind the arc to increase the lead.

“We wanted to get out and push the pace and try to get better looks in transition to get the pace of the game moving,” Chargers coach Nate Drye said. “I thought we shot probably more threes than I was hoping to, but those were the shots that we were getting and that the guys made. Guys did a nice job of stepping up and making shots.”

scorers in the first half. Sophomore forward Brett Czerak led all first-half scorers with 10 points, while guard Mac Cowen had nine and center Mario May added eight.

“We run a ball screen on the offense and off the ball screen we were getting a lot of open looks,” Cowen said. “We were pushing it on offense and had

really good pace at the beginning of the game. Our defense was translating to offense, creating miss-shots and after that we’d run out and we were getting the looks.”

Czerak finished with 16 points, including six more in a 22-point third quarter for the Chargers.

Scoring early on the fast break and letting the defense do the rest has been a big part of ACC’s gameplan, Czerak said “Well, it’s a big thing with us,” Czerak said. “We like to jump on teams early and just let our defense work it out the rest of the game.”

The Chargers’ zone on defense limited Montini’s shooting opportunities, denying scoring lanes down low and forcing the play outside.

“I thought we really guarded, which was really the important part,” Drye said. “We didn’t give up. They’re good at penetrating and they’re strong getting to the hole, so we really emphasized keeping them away from the basket and we

did a nice job of that. I thought that was the key.”

The Chargers will turn their attention to Marmion, which was victorious, 67-58, in the teams’ only regular-season meeting Feb. 21.

The quick turnaround was an expected one, Drye said, and one the Chargers have prepared for.

“We’ve been trying to prepare for two games. We knew the situation and have been trying to prepare for two games for the past five days.

We’ve been working on stuff to carry over from one day to the next day and be ready to go tomorrow.”

Up, 58-28, heading to the fourth quarter, the opportunity to rest starters benefitted ACC twofold.

“A lot of our starters were

able to get out early, which worked out perfectly,” Drye said. “I like to play the pig-tail game because it kind of takes the pressure off you for the next game. Guys have gone through it; we’ve got the lid off of the basket, so we’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”

Freshman forward Will Courter had three points and four boards off the bench, while sophomore guard Jake Bush had a pair of assists and a rebound.

Cowen finished with 12 points and said that his team was content, but not satisfied, at the onset of the second season.

“It’s a good start, but we’re looking for more,” Cowen said.

“Obviously we want to win, that’s the only goal. Survive and advance.”

North finished tied for 10th as a team, climbing 24 spots from 2014.

Sherman, Hutchinson, Bawolek and Myhre – in that order – later collaborated on a 12th-place swim in the penultimate race of the day, the 400 free relay consolation final.

They finished in 3:10.50.

Marmion was the only other Kane County Chronicle-area school with multiple finalists.

Freshman Will Kamps took 12th in the 500 freestyle in 4:39.32. His self-described “big brother” and card counter for the meet’s most grueling race, senior Andrew Kasper, closed his career earlier by taking 10th in the 200 free in 1:42.85.

Kasper, a Batavia resident who’ll compete at NCAA Division III Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, sensed some measure of relief after reaching the junior nationals cut for his event Friday. It trickled down Saturday.

“It was a great swim, definitely. I thought [Friday’s]

In the next breath, though, Rooney often pinpoints one small rub.

“I don’t think that it’s a matter of his talent,” Rooney said. “It’s a matter of him being relaxed. He swims very well in a relaxed setting. He swims awesome in a relaxed setting.”

Myhre channeled his mellow side after the 50 free.

Seeded first after a blazing, prelim-best time of 20.55, he struggled with his flip turn midway through the finals race, making awkward contact with the wall.

“It was a little rough,” Myhre said. “Just didn’t hit it right.”

Diving finals followed the 50 free, and the event plus the requisite prep work before and after created precious extra time for Myhre to rest.

About an hour passed before he dove in for the 100 free.

The lag time was far shorter the rest of the day, but the sound of four medals dangling from his neck ultimately offered enough salve.

Hawks rally past Spartans to win IHSL playoff opener

On Saturday night, the Fox Valley Hawks boys hockey team was more than happy to prove it true once again.

Playing in its freshman season at the varsity level, the Hawks stuck by their underdog mantra, overcoming a two-goal deficit late in the third period to defeat the Lockport-Lemont Spartans, 5-4, in the opening round of the IHSL tournament.

Hawks captain Trevor Kurtzhals scored with 16 seconds left in the game to lift Fox Valley (20-3) to a second-round berth against No.

2 Waubonsie Valley on Saturday.

Kurtzhals picked up a loose puck near the blue line in the offensive zone and scored stick-side over Spartans goaltender Jon Finlon for the game-winner.

“The puck really just bounced to me,” Kurtzhals said. “Josh [Gadow] did the hard work. He poked the puck away from the defenseman. It just really popped to me and it was just reflexes; I was praying it went in, and it did.”

Trailing, 4-2, with 8:46 left in the third period after a 1-1 tie through two, the Hawks, a collection of players from the St. Charles schools, Batavia, Geneva and Kaneland, were getting heavily outshot and needed to answer after two quick strikes from the Spar-

tans opened up the largest lead for either side.

But the Hawks didn’t panic, knowing there was plenty of time left to mount a comeback.

“We told them it’s still a close game,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “When we fell behind by two we told them, that’s the worst lead in hockey, two goals. So we just kept plugging away.”

Fox Valley winger Morgan York stole a puck in the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway at 8:33 of the third period to give the Hawks some life.

Then, with 3:15 left in the contest, Kurtzhals fired a puck from the left point, connecting with Dillon George’s stick in front, whose tip-in tied the game at 4-4.

The Hawks were outshot, 36-21, but got stellar goaltending from Aaron Karkos, who made 32 saves.

None was bigger than an early stop on a breakaway

“It was a real quick breakaway,” Karkos said. “It was a good chance for me to get into the game because the first few shots are always rough, so it was a good opportunity to get focused and ready for the game.”

Scoreless after one, the Spartans struck first with 4:56 left in the second period when Eric Duebler redirected a puck past Karkos.

Defenseman Jordan Rueban had the assist, rifling the puck toward the net where Duebler was able to get his

stick on it for the goal.

But after being outshot all period, the deficit seemed to rally the Hawks, who scored 41 seconds later.

Gadow roofed a backhand past Finlon off a feed from George to even things up heading to the third.

George scored his first goal 51 seconds into the third period to give the Hawks a temporary 2-1 lead, but Spartans captain Danny Dirst scored on a breakaway two minutes later to tie things at 2.

Dirst added assists on a pair of goals by Jordan Rueban as the Spartans ran up the 4-2 lead.

But Karkos picked up his play in the back-half of the third period, stopping 12 of 15 shots in the period to keep the Hawks afloat.

WINNETKA – St. Charles North boys swimmers praised a healthy seasonlong dose of training yardage for fueling them throughout this weekend’s IHSA state meet at New Trier.

Summoned to give the North Stars 50 more yards some 20 minutes after he ostensibly earned a long break, junior Joe Myhre gamely obliged Saturday afternoon.

“It wasn’t really that bad,” Myhre said, “but it came down kind of quick.”

Already in possession of individual medals for his sixthplace swim in the 50 freestyle (20.99) and fifth-place clocking in the 100 free (45.62), Myhre joined North’s 200 freestyle relay after not competing in the event during Friday’s prelims.

The second leg of a quartet that opened with Stephan Hutchinson and continued with Nathan Bawolek and anchor Ben Sherman placed fifth in 1:25.55, producing one more shot of elation on a day when North enjoyed its share.

“We placed fifth at a state meet,” said Sherman, a se-

swim, I had a lot more pressure on me, which is usually what I thrive on,” Kasper said. “But overall, I’m really proud of my swim. I definitely left everything out there. … I loved my last race here.”

Fellow Batavian Garrett Clasen, a freshman with the West Chicago-Batavia co-op, took 11th in the 200 individual medley. His time of 1:54.94 was nine hundredths of a second faster than his prelim time, capping a solid debut season in which he qualified for prelims in two events.

“I thought it was a really, really fun meet,” said Clasen, one of six Batavia students on the boys co-op. “By far, the most exciting meet of the whole season. Really nerve-racking, though, because, I mean, all your hard work in the season just comes down to one race.”

Myhre, who transferred from Indiana before his sophomore year, thrived on that urgency.

After qualifying for two individual swims and two relays last season – without advancing out of any individual prelims – Myhre challenged himself during a busy offseason and high school season.

A chair, a stool, a plant, a stone or maybe a small animal? And what are the curds and whey she is eating? The food is our familiar cottage cheese. Curds are the cheese, whey is the liquid. The tuffet is more difficult. Official definitions say a tuffet is like a footstool with no feet. Modern ones are padded balls, flattened at the top and bottom to make a comfortable seat. But because tuffets are so much like stools, decorators and casual collectors and those on Pinterest use either word to describe a small padded footstool with tiny feet. But there also is another tuffet - a rounded clump of grass that might make a comfortable seat for Miss Muffet. Children’s books often have drawings of Miss Muffet on a stool, not a tuffet. And even antiques auction houses sometimes use the language of their customers. A pair of “tuffets” sold at a November 2014 Neal Auction in New Orleans for $312. But a careful look at the picture shows the tiny faux ivory feet. *** Q: I have what I’ve been told is a Floradora doll that is 105 years old. My grandfather bought it for my mother when she was born in 1909.

The doll has a bisque head and hands, a long curly wig, sleep eyes and an open mouth. She’s about 22 inches tall. I’m 82 years old and have no children who would be interested in the doll. I’d like to sell it to someone “BEST IN THE MIDWEST OR ANYWHERE”

Armand Marseille also sold the bisque heads to other companies. The dolls were made in several sizes. A 14 1/2-inch Floradora doll with bisque shoulder head and hands, sleep eyes, wig and kid body could be bought at a department store for 50 cents in 1909 (when the average worker made 22 cents an hour). Floradora dolls have sold at recent auctions for $50 to $70. *** Q: I have a silver tea service that has a teapot, sugar and creamer marked “Tiffany & Co., quality 9251000.” The tray is marked “Dixon & Sons, Sheffield.” Can you tell me the value of this tea set?

A: The tray was not originally part of this set, since it was made by a different company. Charles Lewis Tiffany opened a store in New York in 1837 and the name “Tiffany & Co.” was used beginning in 1853.

The company still is in business. In 1852, Tiffany & Co. set the standard for sterling silver in the United States, which is 92.5 percent silver. James Dixon began working in silver in Sheffield, England, in 1806. The company was called James Dixon & Sons by 1835. The company made Britannia, nickel silver and silver-plated ware.

It was out of business by 1992. The quality numbers on the teapot, sugar and creamer indicate they are sterling silver, but the tray is silver plated. The name Tiffany adds value. Your set might be worth $1,000, depending on

The ins and outs of bone marrow transplantation Dear Doctor K: I have leukemia.

Thankfully, a family member was a bone marrow match. Can you tell me what to expect during my bone marrow transplant procedure?

Dear Reader: A bone marrow transplant can be a life-saving treatment. To understand how it works, you need to understand how blood cells are created. And what leukemia is.

Your blood contains red and white blood cells. There are several types of white blood cells, which are a key part of your immune system. All your blood cells are made by blood stem cells, which live primarily in the spongy center of your big bones.

In the years before you got leukemia, each of your blood cells was programmed to live for a while, and then to die – only to be replaced by new, young cells.

When you developed leukemia, genetic changes in some white blood cells suddenly kept them from dying. As a result, the number of that type of white blood cell kept growing. An ideal treatment would kill just the cancerous white blood cells, and allow noncancerous new cells to replace them. The ideal treatment has not been discovered. Bone marrow

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff transplant, while less than ideal, is such an important advance that it was honored with the Nobel Prize.

In a bone marrow transplant, all of your white blood cells – healthy and cancerous – are killed by drugs, radiation or both.

Then healthy blood stem cells are infused into your blood. Those cells find their way to your bone marrow, and start to make healthy new red and white blood cells. The new cells will multiply. I’ve put an illustration of the transplant process on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

The healthy blood stem cells may be collected from your blood, before the main radiation or chemotherapy begins. The cells are treated to remove any cancer cells, and then stored until the transplant. In your case, the healthy blood stem cells will come from another person (a donor). The donor’s cells must be a good “match” for you – this means certain markers on their cells and your cells are as similar as possible. This reduces the risk that the cells will

be rejected by your body.

Bone marrow transplants are usually used to treat leukemia, lymphomas, Hodgkin’s disease and multiple myeloma, because these cancers affect the bone marrow directly. The procedure is also used for some noncancerous conditions, such as sickle cell anemia.

You will stay in the hospital for several weeks after the transplant.

Until your bone marrow cells multiply to a certain level, you will be at increased risk of infection. Other serious risks include severe bleeding, liver problems and increased risk of developing another cancer.

Another possible problem is that cells from a donor might not match your cells well enough and the new donor cells will begin attacking the cells of your body.

This is called graft-versus-host disease. You will take medications to reduce the risk of this happening. Despite the dangers, bone marrow transplantation is usually successful.
