Geneva KinderZone registration to begin GENEVA – The Geneva Park District will begin taking KinderZone Program registration for the 2014-15 school year on Tuesday.

The KinderZone program is a recreational-based program designed for the kindergarten-age child and is held at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

This program focuses on a variety of enrichment and recreational activities, including athletics, martial arts, environmental education, arts and crafts, gym activities, fitness, nutrition and more. GHOST HUNTERS Seeking paranormal evidence at O’Brien’s Pub

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Things that go bump in the night were on tap late Friday at O’Brien’s Pub and Grill in Batavia, as a team of ghost hunters converged on the iconic bar and eatery in search of the paranormal.

Casey O’Brien, who has owned the business for 10 years and the historic building at 12 N. River St. for eight, said stories about strange occurrences have been told for years.

“We’ve had employees and customers who have said they had paranormal experiences,” O’Brien said. “What I’ve seen is slips of paper and a beer glass pushed off a shelf with no wind or anything. I’ve felt moments of chill, where it all of a sudden got cold ... and a juke box that turns on and off by itself. This is the third time it’s been replaced.”

Perhaps the story with the biggest impact occurred three times to two different employees and told to him independently as each worked different shifts, O’Brien said.

“There’s a guy at the bar who is asked to leave because it’s past last call – and suddenly the guy disappears,” O’Brien said. “He is described to be like a fur trapper, with a fur hat and coat.”

When O’Brien recently reconnected with a childhood friend, Mark Schwabe of Genoa, via FaceBook, he was intrigued

by Schwabe’s ghost hunter hobby and shared the bar’s strange stories.

“We went to fourth grade together,” O’Brien said. “Ten days ago, I had not seem him in 45 years.”

O’Brien said Schwabe persuaded him to let his paranormal research team – Ghost Head Soup – into the bar. So by 9 p.m.

Friday, O’Brien imposed an early last call, cleared out the customers and watched as Ghost Head Soup’s team set up the equipment.

Thompson explained they were using cameras with thermal imaging to record heat signatures, audio and video recorders with infrared capabilities, digital cameras and Play-Doh – a low-tech way to situate cameras and keep them still.

“And we have a ghost box,” Thompson said. “A radio that’s been hacked up. An ... AM-FM radio that has a tuner ... and we make some slight adjustments and it’s believed the spirits can talk through that. ... We’ll be asking questions ... and sometimes questions are answered through the ghost box.”

The equipment also captures electronic voice phenomena that the team listens to after the session is completed, using Dragon Voice Recognition software to be objective.

“If the program hears the same thing we’re hearing, chances are it’s happening,” Hawrylenko said. “No other hunt teams do that – at least not the ones I’ve seen – because they want to interpret what they’re hearing. The computer doesn’t know it’s on a ghost hunt.”

Schwabe said the team discovered how to capture voices in real time.

“A lot of recordings could not be understood until we reversed them,” Schwabe said. “We record in reverse, and it comes out.”

Hawrylenko credited Thompson with figuring that out.

“Dean captured an [electronic voice phenomena] he could not understand,” Hawrylenko said. “He altered it in any

way he could – changing pitch, raise the volume .... And when he played it backwards, it said something. It said, ‘Reckless spiritualists are funny.’ “ Hawrylenko said when electronic voice phenomena are recorded on paranormal TV shows, they are usually simple words.

“We got words that were complex, multi-syllables and the word ‘spiritualists’ [is] not a brand-new word. Not a word a lot of people use nowadays. They say ‘ghost hunter,’ that sort of thing,” Hawrylenko said. “The ghost that Dean was probably chasing that day in the house was about 100 years old, so it probably hearkened back to the first age of spiritualism, when the word spiritualist was common.”

Another reverse electronic voice phenomena, caught by Schmuldt, was of a little girl at another location.

“So we realized that some specimens of EVP come backwards,” Hawrylenko said.

“Why? We don’t know. We’re talking about the other side of the mirror.”

Schwabe said the team stayed at O’Brien’s until 3:30 a.m. Saturday and will take the rest of the week to review their tapes.

“We had responses on the equipment when we were doing the questioning – lights would start blinking,” Schwabe said.

“We will try to sync up our audio and see if we caught anything. We won’t know what it is until we review it.”

ST. CHARLES – Sugar Grove resident Darlene Danielson believes that walking canes can be both functional and fashionable.

Danielson owns Classy Cane Covers, just one of the exhibitors at Sunday’s Festival of Arts and Crafts at the DuPage Expo Center in St. Charles.

“It lifts people’s spirits,” Danielson said. “It’s like an accessory.”

The idea for Classy Cane Covers was born after Danielson’s mother, Mary Augelli, wanted to dress up her cane for an upcoming family wedding. So she sewed the extra material from her sequin blouse onto her cane.

“She wanted it to match her outfit and dress it up for the occasion,” Danielson said.

Danielson and Augelli own Classy Cane Covers, which is in second year of business.

Hampshire resident Sue Camodeca was tempting shoppers with her toffee, caramel corn and other sweets that she makes as part of her Sweets by Sue business.

“I’ve always baked,” Camodeca said. “I did cake decorating when I was a teenager.”

Caramel corn and toffee are her specialties. Her caramel corn is unique in that is made with corn puffs so there are no kernels.

“It’s gluten-free,” Camodeca said.

Glen Ellyn resident Tom Liebing’s booth also caught people’s eyes and ears. He makes drums out of recycled propane tanks.

“I sell them to professional jazz players,” he said. “It has a sound like a round xylophone.”

The drums also are used in music therapy, Liebing said.

East’s Shanel makes final impression

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com EVANSTON – St. Charles East senior boys swimmer Will Shanel posed with the second of his two state medals before smiling again and exhaling.

He hadn’t begun to ponder his Saints legacy as Saturday’s IHSA swimming and diving state finals wound down, but at this point, just taking a moment to breathe sufficed.

“I came in with the mentality of, ‘Last race, got to make a move and throw everything I’ve got left into it,’ ” Shanel said. “And I can’t say that I could have gotten out any more tired. I’m really exhausted.”

Shanel sported the fruits of his labor around his neck after finishing sixth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.08) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:36.66) at Evanston.

For someone who lately has taken to calling himself the “caboose” of a decorated swimming family, here were a couple more souvenirs to take back to the station – or at least the Shanel home.

Shanel’s parents were collegians at Indiana, and he has had two older sisters in the Saints program. One of them, Ashley, competes at NCAA Division II Truman State (Mo.), his destination come the fall.

“Right now, it’s like, ‘OK.’ Mentally, I know that it’s over and this is the last race of high school right there,” Shanel said. “But at the same time it’s starting to set in a little bit to the point where I’ve done what I can with the younger guys and kind of said, ‘Hey, this is what to look for.’ ” Marmion earned a fourthplace finish in the Chronicle area’s only other championship final, finishing the 400 freestyle relay in 3:07.79, nearly one second faster than its preliminary time.

Edging perennial contenders Hinsdale Central and New Trier in the day’s final event – team state champion Normal University won the race – proved especially satisfying for the Cadets, who progressed throughout a season that featured humble beginnings. Marmion finished 11th as a team.

“We put in the effort, we put in the yards during practice,” said Burke, a Wayne resident. “We definitely stepped up at the end of the meet, and we really come through.”

St. Charles North’s 200 freestyle relay of sophomores Joe Myhre and Stephan Hutchinson and seniors Ross Davis and Collin Bawolek also played the waiting game, as theirs was the ninth of 12

events.

Considering Hutchinson was the only relay member boasting state experience, that might have made for even more frantic thumb-twiddling before the North Stars placed 10th in 1:27.01.

Not so much, thanks to ample mid-meet sustenance – usually bananas and grapes – and the tutelage of the maturing Hutchinson.

“Last year we had the senior studs and everything like that. They’d been going to state since their freshman year,” Davis said. “So it’s weird, because all season, the seniors were the leaders and all of a sudden, the role was changed and Stephan became the leader. But he did a good job. He knew what it was like, so he explained it to all of us.”

Shanel required no such crash course as he looked to build on last season’s effort,

which included an eighthplace swim in the 200 IM and a leg with the 11th-place 200 free relay.

Shanel qualified for the 500 freestyle when the state meet was last held at Evanston, in 2012. While he missed the finals, he still derived a watershed moment as a spectator, beaming as most did after the duel between Hinsdale Central’s Danny Thomson and Reed Malone of New Trier.

Thomson (Stanford) and Malone (USC) since have relocated to southern California, but when Thomson edged Malone with a state-record swim of 4:18.86 on a Saturday afternoon two years ago, Shanel recalls pondering how all that attention might one day rest on him.

Thomson’s standard was nowhere near Shanel’s radar, but he was hoping to eclipse his dad’s top 500 time of 4:31.13

for then-St. Charles High School.

“Ending the tradition so far,” Will Shanel said, “but hopefully, we’ll be able to come back and have some more.”

While Normal University junior Jake Miller set a new state record in the 200 IM, winning in 1:48.08, the rest of the field was no less formidable and respected.

Competing two lanes away from Shanel, runner-up Jae Park of New Trier recalled a handful of memorable encounters with Shanel before Saturday marked their last.

“Guys like those, during a big [regular-season] invite, I kind of treat it like a state meet,” Park said. “Guys like Will.”

The caboose left Evanston with one final thrill.

He’s eager to create many more in college.

Nathan Traxler’s fall in 3:24 at 182 provided what seemed a safe cushion, but the RedHawks roared back, largely on the strength of tight decisions.

Marist drew to within 1918 after a Marmion forfeit at 106, a standard all season, and took its first lead with Nick Lukanich’s 3-2 win at 113.

Jimenez’s 6-1 decision at 132 gave the Cadets a 25-24 edge, but Marist won the dual with Mario Leveille’s 3-2 decision against Michael Callahan at 138 moments later.

Fredette excited to join Bulls

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Jimmer Fredette still wasn’t sure what went wrong in Sacramento.

Then again, most current and former Kings players have a hard time explaining exactly how that organization works.

But Fredette is with the Bulls now, and he’s looking to reinvent himself.

“Sometimes things don’t go the way that you wanted them to all the time, but I appreciate everything that happened in Sacramento,’’ Fredette said. “It was a character builder for me, continuing to go out and play hard.

“I feel like I progressed as a player even though sometimes you didn’t get the minutes you wanted to. You still have to go out and play hard, work hard and know that if you keep playing hard and doing the right things that eventually things will turn your way. I’m hoping that will happen here.’’

So do the Bulls.

After being bought out of his contract Thursday and clearing waivers, the 6-foot-2 guard officially signed a freeagent deal Sunday morning.

He entered the Bulls’ 109-90 victory against the Knicks with 3:08 left and hit a 20-foot jumper.

There were several other teams in the running for Fredette, the 10th pick in the 2011 draft, but he had his sights set on the Bulls all along.

“I see how this team plays.

They play hard every single night, and they play for each other,’’ Fredette said. “And they play the right way.

That’s something I was looking for, to come into a team that I can fit in and play the way I wanted to, play hard every single night.’’

In two-plus seasons with the Kings, the former BYU standout shot 40 percent from 3-point range. He averaged seven points and 15 minutes.

This season, he’s shooting 49.3 percent on 3-pointers, but his minutes have decreased.

The buyout was almost a get-out-of-jail card.

And don’t think he didn’t notice how the careers of Nate Robinson, Marco Belinelli and D.J. Augustin have turned around under Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau.

Derrick Rose might not want to recruit players, but

it seems Thibodeau’s reputation is drawing them.

“I’m excited about it,’’ Fredette said of playing for Thibodeau. “He’s obviously a very defensive-minded coach, and I’m just trying to learn the schemes and all the stuff. Hopefully I can continue to work on that and get better on that end of the floor.

“He’s done a great job [of turning careers around], and I’m excited about that.

He plays to your strengths, that’s what he told me when I talked to him. He was going to find out what my strengths are and play to them. Hopefully we’ll be able to do that and hopefully further my career.”

But there’s an acclimation process under Thibodeau.

“He’s more than just a shooter,” Thibodeau said.

“I think what he can do in a pick-and-roll can be very effective. He’s very good with the ball. He’s got to learn defensively what to do in terms of team defense, and that’s usually the biggest adjustment.

“We like his makeup. I think he can grow. I think he’ll get better. But you have to remember: You have to put the team first.’’

BLOOMINGTON – The Marmion wrestling team rebounded from a narrow semifinal loss to place third in the Class 3A team dual state meet Saturday.

A week removed from crowning six individual place-winners – including four-time state champion Johnny Jimenez of St. Charles – the Cadets downed Rockton Hononegah, 36-22, in the third-place match.

Marmion, which opened the day at U.S. Cellular Coliseum with a 43-24 quarter-

final win against Plainfield Central, earned four technical falls in the third-place dual.

Trace Carello opened the match with a tech fall at 152; Nick Ferraro (170), Anthony Cheloni (126) and Michael Callahan (138) followed.

Marmion, the team state runner-up last season, was unable to hold a 19-0 lead in its semifinal against eventual runner-up Marist.

We decided together that we weren’t ready for the responsibility and made the mutual decision to end the pregnancy early in the first trimester. We did marry eventually and had a baby girl a few years ago who is now in college.

We divorced many years ago because of his many affairs, including one with his best friend’s wife. I have come to believe that my ex told our daughter about our decision out of spite because I told her about the affairs when she was old enough since she may have a half-sister.

Should I ask my daughter about this or let it go? Are you sure it isn’t more than one – or a brother or two?

The fact that you terminated a pregnancy before your daughter’s birth has nothing to do with her. If you think there is something festering between you and your daughter, my advice is to clear the air before it gets worse.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend and I have been together since August 2012 and have lived together since last summer. He is perfect in every way. He wakes me every morning with a smile and a kiss and pours me a cup of tea. He never goes anywhere without letting me know he thinks I’m beautiful and telling me how much he loves me.

At the bridge table, we want to prove whether or not a contract is makable. This is usually easier when we can see all 52 cards, or have been warned there is a trap somewhere. When we are just playing at the table, it can be easy to make a mistake almost on autopilot.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads his fourth-highest heart. East wins with his king and returns the heart nine. Who should prevail, declarer or the defenders?

After a one-no-trump opening, some pairs use a jump-response of three of a major to show game values with a singleton (or void) in that suit, three cards in the other major and 5-4 (or 5-5) in the minors. Partner can usually judge the right contract. However, without that agreement, North should just jump to three no-trump.

Declarer has seven top tricks: two spades, four diamonds and one club. He can get at least one heart trick and three more club winners. How might he go down?

Only if the club finesse is losing and the defenders take four hearts and one club.

The key play is almost counterintuitive. At trick two, South must play his second low heart, which cuts the communication between the defenders. If instead he covers with the queen or jack, West can play low. Then, when East gets in with his club king, a third heart through declarer defeats the contract.

Watch out for this difficult duck.

Evaluate routes to determine rate and number of subscribers.

Analyze, design and implement formation of routes on an ongoing basis. The objective being to meet service criteria in the most cost effective manner.

Administer all single copy sales procedures.

Report to work on time (1:00 AM) and as scheduled.

Assist in the accomplishment of company objectives by performing other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills Good working knowledge of Word, Excel and e-mail.

Ability to use manual pallet jacks Ability to use office machines such as scanner, copier, calculator, computer and fax and various communication equipment.

Ability to read and execute a route list.

Demonstrate ability to read, write and speak English clearly, effectively and concisely with employees, customers, carriers, supervisors, managers and publisher.

Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Required Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent. Some college preferred but not required.

Work experience that demonstrates competency in managing multiple priorities and includes delivery of newspapers.

Must have reliable vehicle, proof of insurance and a valid driver's license.
