XD Adventures offers thrills in STC

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Thrill-seekers have a new place to get their kicks – and it’s in St. Charles.

XD Adventures – which bills itself as a 9-D interactive cinema experience – recently opened in the lower level of Charlestowne Mall, across from Charlestowne 18.

Tony Satinsky credited the idea to his father-in-law, Boris Ioffe, who encountered similar rides in Europe.

According to a description from Satinsky, the ride’s “next-generation technology offers moviegoers a remarkably intense experience” that includes effects simulating wind, smoke, rain, fire and snow.

Riders may choose from a selection of movies, which range from about four to 15 minutes in length. Satinsky, who has seen most of the movies, cautioned parents that some of the selections might be too scary for young children.

Seats that move in sync with the picture, as well as 3-D glasses, help immerse riders in the action. People have compared it to rides offered at theme parks in Orlando, Florida, Satinsky said.

“Now you can try it here in Illinois,” he said.

When trying to find a location for XD Adventures, Satinsky said some venues declined because they viewed it as competition to existing movie theaters. St. Charles was very supportive and easy to deal with, he said, complimenting the mall as well.

Clipped yard waste program restored Residents’ feedback prompts a return to 8-a-year service

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Feedback from residents has prompted the city to again offer brush collection eight times a year.

Meeting as the Government Services Committee, aldermen on Mon-

day recommended approval of the measure after Public Works Manager A.J. Reineking described the response when St. Charles reduced the number of collection cycles to seven.

The additional citywide brush collection costs $22,888.86 – or an extra 20 cents a month per customer, he said.

The revised yard waste fee will translate to $4.41 a month for fiscal year 2016-17, $4.50 a month in 2017-18 and $4.59 a month in 2018-19.

St. Charles contracts with Kramer Tree Specialists Inc. for the service, which will run from April to November.

In 2014, the lowest volume month –

July – was eliminated, a decision that was met with unfavorable reactions from residents, Reineking said.

Tweaking the schedule didn’t work last year, either, he said, noting that November was cut on a trial basis.

Residents’ feedback and the piles of brush that accumulated in parkways over the winter contributed to the city’s decision to reinstate the program to eight months, he said.

Kramer Tree Specialists also provides an annual leaf collection program, which was reduced from four cycles to three cycles in the current five-year contract. Reineking said that change was better received.

Geneva panel votes 6-2 for department budget proposals

GENEVA – In a divided vote Monday, aldermen voted, 6-2, as a committee of the whole to recommend approval of the city’s proposed fiscal 2016-17 budgets covering the general fund, electric, water/wastewater, capital spending, TriCom and other funds.

Second Ward Aldermen Don Cummings and Richard Marks both voted “no.”

First Ward Alderman Tara Burghart and 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian both were absent.

During a two-hour discussion on the budget worksheets, Cummings

said he had questioned the police department’s overtime costs and said he met with Police Chief Steve Mexin and Cmdr.

Overtime in the 2017 budget is proposed at $360,560. In 2016, police overtime was $295,000, according to the city’s budget worksheet.

ST. CHARLES – Mark Koenen remembers the moment he first learned of Pheasant Run Resort.

At that time, Koenen – who later would assume leadership roles within the city, including his current title of city administrator – was a Wisconsin resident preparing a move to Illinois.

His neighbor recommended he settle in St. Charles – and provided a specific reason why. “ ‘Oh, move to St. Charles because Pheasant Run is there,’ ” Koenen recalled her saying. “This was 1982.”

Pheasant Run, 4051 E. Main St., has had more than 50 years to make a name for itself. In that time, the resort has undergone renovations and expansions, including the opening of its 16-story tower and its 35,000-squarefoot Mega Center in the 1980s. Honeymooners have stayed there, entertainers have performed there, and crowds have flocked there for events and conventions.

“It’s certainly a social center,” Koenen said, further describing Pheasant Run as a “calling card to the St. Charles community.”

But now, as Pheasant Run plans for the future, it faces a lawsuit from the DuPage Airport Authority that calls its fate into question. Through its eminent domain powers, the airport authority seeks acquisition of Pheasant Run to protect its runways and airspace.

The resort’s ownership expressed its commitment to the property in a statement.

“As an iconic institution of St. Charles and the greater region for over 50 years, Pheasant Run Resort continues to serve the community and host important events,” according to the statement. “We are very confident that this issue with the airport will be resolved quickly so that our current and future guests will continue to enjoy the exceptional experience provided by our hotel and resort.”

Saint Charles Resort LLC bought Pheasant Run in 2014. The resort is managed by Schaumburg-based Hostmark Hospitality Group.

The airport opposes potential new uses for the Pheasant Run property, which were presented to St. Charles aldermen last fall as a concept plan.

Retail, office and residential uses were proposed.

It also offers corporate meeting space, and – through its conventions and entertainment options – it has introduced the community to visitors from around the state and from around the country.

“Certainly, it is a huge benefit to the community,” Wagner said.

The statement from Pheasant Run indicated the resort continues to make investments in the property.

“Pheasant Run Resort remains fully operational as the ownership and management team continue to invest in room upgrades and property improvements that enhance each guest’s experience,” according to the statement. “We will continue to honor our commitments to our guests and future guests as we always have in the past, and look forward to ensuring Pheasant Run is a top destination for years to come.”

The case between Pheasant Run and the airport is expected in court April 18.

Toy boats have been popular for hundreds of years. There were carved wooden sail boats, tin models of paddle-wheel boats, ocean liners and military fleets made by the 19th century. By the 20th century many were made with mechanisms that pushed them across the water. Or there were simple floating “pond” boats.

The exploding boat wasn’t made until the early 1900s. It was a toy made of blocks of wood and came with a submarine or cannon that could shoot a wooden “torpedo” at the side of the boat and blow the wooden blocks apart. The first of these was a 12-inch battleship and cannon set made by Baker and Bennett of New York about 1905 called “Exploding Battleship Builder.” Schoenhut made a similar toy in 1915 called the “Naval War Game.” It was a boxed set with a ship, submarines and three torpedoes. The mechanisms were simple. Each ship had a hollow spot in the lowest wooden section where a mousetrap was set. When the torpedo hit the ship’s side, the trap was sprung and the boat came apart in a noisy “explosion.”

Homemade versions were made following printed instructions in a 1935 Popular Science magazine.

And in the 1950s, a similar plastic toy was made. The early exploding B & B toy set, 16 pieces and the box, sold at a James Julia auction in Fairfield, Maine, in 2015 for $237.

*** Q: We bought an arts and craftsstyle home, which was built in 1913 in a historic district of San Diego. There is a round circle of brass about two inches in diameter in the middle of the dining-room floor. There are three holes in the brass for prongs to be inserted.

Could it have been a servant’s bell?

A: Servants’ bells were used to summon servants in homes built for the wealthy. By the early 20th century, bells were electric and were wired from various rooms in the house to the servants’ area.

The bell in the middle of the diningroom floor would have been near the head of the dining-room table.

Wires from the bell led to the kitchen. Someone sitting at the table could step on the bell to call a servant to bring the next course. The holes in the brass may be where the bell or the wires were attached to the plate in the floor. *** Q: We have a dresser with a label that reads “Globe-Bosse World Furniture Co.” When was that company in business?

Dennis Hendrix, 76, of Batavia, IL, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2016, at his home. He was born on Jan. 24, 1940, in Peru, IN, the son of Jesse Hurst and Mary Louise (Williams)

Hendrix.

Dennis was united in marriage on June 11, 1966, in Rockford, IL, to Patricia Dianne Monigold.

Denny graduated from Mooseheart High School in 1958 and was proud to say that he was the first student to graduate from Mooseheart whose parents were also both Mooseheart alumni. He has a long, proud family history there, as his parents, siblings, and many aunts and uncles were all raised at Mooseheart. Dennis went on to attend the University of Illinois, moving on to graduate from Blackburn College in 1963. He received his master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in 1969.

Denny was a lifelong teacher, coach and high school assistant principal in the area.

He worked at Kaneland High School from 1963 to 1978 and Geneva High School from 1981 to 1986. He returned to Kaneland in

1986, where he remained until his retirement in 1995. Denny was heavily involved in sports of all kinds; he participated in, coached and officiated football, basketball and track.

Denny loved the outdoors; he golfed, hunted, and fished with his friends as often as possible. He enjoyed several Canadian fishing trips with friends and family every summer since 1970 and could always be counted on to tell amazing fish stories.

After retirement from education, Denny worked at Bob Jass Chevrolet in Elburn for over a decade. He loved this job, as it allowed him to do two of his favorite things: talk to people and drive cars.

Wherever he went, Denny made lifelong friends. He was a friendly, funny guy who knew someone wherever he went. On the rare occasion where he didn’t know someone, he would inevitably strike up a conversation with someone new, and before long they’d found some common ground. Denny absolutely treasured his many, many friends, and enjoyed their visits and memories until the very end.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia D. Hendrix of Batavia, IL; two daughters, Nancy (Shawn) Lynch of Lombard, IL, and Diane (Aaron Ruple) Hendrix of Yorkville, IL; one brother, James (Nancy) Hendrix of Woodridge, IL; one sister, Karen

Ann Sellek of Johnsburg, IL; two grandsons, David and Derek Butts of Yorkville, IL; several nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins.

“If you write a lot of tickets, you have to have somebody go to court and listen to people protest their tickets,” Cummings said. “It becomes more frustrating because I don’t see an answer. We need ideas. … Maybe we can come up with something that works.”

Cummings said his frustration comes from a city that is not growing but has a budget that does grow.

“We should be able to do something,” Cummings said, adding that 2019 “can’t come soon enough. That’s the end of my term.”

Cyberattacks turn real THE WASHINGTON POST About 30 miles north of New York City, in Rye, New York, sits the Arthur R. Bowman Dam, a reinforced-concrete gravity dam constructed a century ago for ice-making, and now primarily used for flood control, with a sluice gate that can control water permitted to flow downstream. Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 18, 2013, a hacker sneaked into computer systems that monitor the dam and move the sluice gate.

According to a grand jury indictment unsealed Thursday in federal court in New York City, the hacker was Hamid Firoozi, 34, the network manager for a computer security firm, ITSec Team, based in Iran. Firoozi collected information about the dam’s water levels and temperature, and the status of the sluice gate. He might have been able to open the gate, but, fortunately, it was manually disconnected for maintenance.

He was charged with one count of computer hacking. The intrusion shows once again that cyberattacks are proving feasible against critical civilian infrastructure, such as electrical grids, power plants and dams. The Bowman Dam is not the Hoover Dam, but its vulnerability ought to concern everyone.

Firoozi was part of a larger group of seven people employed by ITSec and another company, Mersad, that were also behind a massive onslaught against websites run by U.S. banks that reached a peak in September 2012, the indictment says.

In effect, the group overwhelmed the websites with so many hits that hundreds of thousands of regular customers could not access their bank accounts. The attackers didn’t steal data or money, but using robot-like botnets, threw so much traffic at the websites – up to 140 gigabits per second – that the sites failed.

It is unlikely that Firoozi or the others, still in Iran, are going to face trial in a U.S. courtroom for these assaults. Nor will grand jury indictments deter future cyberattacks from abroad. But leveling charges and naming those responsible shows that the hackers cannot always escape with anonymity; doing so may crimp international travel by those charged, and the hidden hand of Iran is exposed. According to the Justice Department, the two companies involved worked for the government, including Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, and one of the hackers, for his effort, got credit toward completion of mandatory military service.

How do these Iranian assaults differ from Stuxnet? That was the computer worm deployed by the United States and Israel to wreck centrifuges in Iran making enriched uranium that could be used in a nuclear bomb.

The attack methods were similar; Stuxnet also targeted industrial control mechanisms. But Stuxnet was aimed only at Iran’s illicit weapons-making ability, not at harming civilians. The distinction is important – just like the difference between military and civilian targets matters in other forms of war.

So far, the world’s major powers have managed to coalesce only around some informal and voluntary norms of behavior for cyberconflict. Perhaps it is time to set them down more concretely and firmly rule out floods and blackouts as tools of cyberattack.

To the Editor: As a former Illinois budget director under Gov. Pat Quinn for the four years after the Great Recession, I am disappointed in the gridlock in our current governor’s recent talks.

Unpaid state bills are rising back to peak levels. Meanwhile, our new governor refuses to implement either sufficient spending cuts or new revenues.

Quinn achieved fiscal balance by reducing unpaid bills $876 million in his last full year. Unpaid bills at the end of FY14 were down to $2.404 billion after a recessionary peak of nearly $7 billion.

Positive cash flow balances were creating the stable platform necessary to address longer-term priorities.

Now, instead, the governor uses the intentional buildup of unpaid bills as a blackmail club for political purposes.

This should be rejected.

lock is causing damage to the economy, higher education, infrastructure, private sector vendors and, most importantly, the people of Illinois.

Rauner promised to “shake up Springfield,” but it is clear the only shaking taking place is to the social fabric of our state.

Our 1970 Constitution did not assume the abusive use of gubernatorial budgetary vetoes as a blackmail tool to seek other substantive and political change to our economic system.

Bypassing vetoes, the General Assembly can fix this by placing constitutional reforms on the ballot in 2016. A package of reforms to eliminate gridlock while also letting the voters in the state consider a millionaire’s tax might not make our state’s 13 oligarchs happy, but it would add fiscal

balance benefiting millions in our state.

By the end of the normal veto session in November, it is obvious there is a structural and procedural flaw in Illinois government.

This flaw could be addressed through a deadlock mechanism in the Illinois Constitution like the one we have now for reapportionment deadlocks.

Bypassing the gridlock and blackmail, we once again could move our state toward the fiscal stability achieved during the tough budget fights a few years ago. It is time to let the common sense of the voters overrule the political and painful schemes of current Gov. Bruce Rauner.

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Strong pitching and defense often can win baseball games by themselves if coupled with a timely hit or two.

St. Charles East had no problem keeping Waubonsie Valley out of the run column Monday afternoon, but the hitting wasn’t where coach Len Asquini would have liked it to be.

The Saints mustered only four hits and couldn’t push across a run as they were shut out, 1-0, by Waubonsie Valley in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover contest.

With the shutout loss, the Saints (22) have now scored just one run over their past 16 innings after scoring 11 in their first win of the season over CaryGrove two games before.

“Offensive execution has to be better,” Asquini said. “Especially with the limited scoring opportunities, we’re going to have to get that done and we didn’t today. It’s a little frustrating offensively, but we’ll get back at it, adjust some things and hopefully start hitting the ball better.”

The inability to pick up timely hits somewhat spoiled a strong outing on the mound by Niko Klebosits. The junior southpaw went six innings, allowing just one run on three hits.

The game’s lone run came in the fourth inning on a two-out line drive to right center field by Waubonsie Valley’s Jason Neville. East’s Corbin Marucco made a diving attempt but the ball found its way past him, allowing Warriors first baseman Brandon Petersen to score from first base.

Aside from that inning, Klebosits (01) was able to avoid allowing any other Warriors player to cross the plate.

Unfortunately, he had no margin for error Monday.

“You can’t think about the offense when you’re out there. You just have to keep pitching the way you were taught,” Klebosits said. “You can’t get down on your teammates or anything like that. You just have to have faith that they are going to come through and just keep pitching well.”

The Saints got runners to third base on two separate occasions, both times with only one out in the inning. After Austin Gift singled to lead off the second inning, a passed ball and wild pitch allowed him to move to third, but a foul out by John Carroll and ground

“I honestly think we’re squaring

the ball up pretty well,” said Dale, whose single to lead off the seventh inning was erased by a double play. “Our approach needs to change a little bit, especially with two strikes, but we’ve been working on it a bunch in practice and hopefully it will pan out into the games.”

Waubonsie Valley starting pitcher Alex Schram went six innings, allowing just three hits on 74 pitches. Jacob Hennessy picked up the save for the Warriors (2-1).

“I think that’s the best way to fix our offense,” Dale said. “To get out there and face more live pitching is what we need. Especially with the weather being so nice, we want to be out here.”

“We’ll get some work done here before the game tomorrow,” Asquini said. “Then head over to Prospect and hopefully take care of business and get back on the winning track.”

Geneva drops slugfest to DeKalb on road

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The bats of the Geneva softball team did what they’ve done all year, pounding the ball hard at DeKalb on Monday morning.

But the Barbs did the same, building a six-run lead after three innings en route to an 11-8 win over the Vikings.

Geneva coach Greg Dierks said he was impressed with his team’s continued success at the plate given it came against DeKalb ace Morgan Newport, a Northwestern commit.

“I thought with our bats we had a real good game,” Dierks said. “That’s as good of a pitcher as we’re going to see all year, and I thought we hit the ball hard all game. Scoring eight runs, I don’t think I’m full of ourselves to say I think eight runs should be enough to win.”

“We had a couple innings where we didn’t score but only one inning the whole game where we went down in order,” Dierks said. “Like I said, she’s a good pitcher. So I’m real happy with the way we’re swinging our bats right now.”

Geneva got a run back in the fourth when Ali Dierks singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on consecutive groundouts. After Plocinski put the Barbs down in order in the fourth, the Vikings scored in the top of the fifth on a double by Kaitlyn Plocinski.

DeKalb got two runs in the fifth to push the lead to 11-5, but Geneva added two in the sixth with a two-run single by Katie Keller. The Vikings brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh. Kaitlyn Plocinski and Wrenn singled, then a double by Ali Dierks scored a run. But Newport in-

duced the last two batters of the inning to line out to second base.

“We come back with three, then we come back with four, and it looked like Morgan was settling in,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “Then Geneva pecks away with one here and one there, and you knew they weren’t going to go away, then we committed a few errors behind her and she elevated a few balls to good hitters and they hit it.”

The Vikings got 12 hits in the game, including 3-for-4 games from Keller and Kaitlyn Plocinski. Wrenn and Ali Dierks each had two hits.

The Barbs managed 14 hits in the game, and all the runs were earned.

Greg Dierks said he expects the pitching to come around.

“We’re not asking them to get too fancy out there,” Dierks said. “We’re just asking them to hit their locations.

If we hit the spots we need, it will be either a softer hit ball or the at-bats keep going or something.”

Flurry propels North Stars

editorial@kcchronicle.com PLAINFIELD – St. Charles North appeared to have a case of the Mondays during the first half of its girls soccer game at Plainfield North.

The North Stars regrouped at halftime, scoring three times in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to bury the Tigers, 3-1.

“It took a bit for us to get going and momentum was a huge thing,” North Stars coach Brian Harks said. “We talked about what we needed to do and adjustments we needed to make at halftime and the girls came out and performed really well in the second half.”

It wasn’t X’s and O’s as much as it was composure in the final scoring third, intensity in the middle and fighting to win 50-50 balls.

“I wasn’t pleased with our tackling in the first half. We settled for sticking a leg out, and that wasn’t getting it done,” Harks said. “We were standing and watching the ball a little bit, so we challenged the defenders, the midfielders and attackers for different elements of their games and they stepped up to the challenge.”

Morgan Rerko put the North Stars

(3-1) ahead with 37:07 remaining in the game when her cross attempt resulted in a goal.

“To be completely honest, I was going for a cross,” she said. “Partially the wind took it and partially my aim was a little off, but it ended up in the back of the net, so I was pleased with it.”

Rerko’s first goal of the season ignited a domino effect as Gia Wahlberg made it 2-0 at the 31:50 mark and then Hailey Rydberg scored 34 seconds later after a pass from Wahlberg.

“It was kind of a bobble to my feet,” Wahlberg said. “I kind of turned and thought about going down line and saw Hailey cutting in to the 18 [yard box] and I knew that if I got it to her feet, it was going to be a goal no matter what.”

The offensive outburst was certainly the highlight for the North Stars.

“It felt good and it’s starting to feel like things are coming together,” Wahlberg said. “We didn’t slow down after Morgan’s goal, which is a really good thing. I hope to see more of that in the future, whether we score in the first or second half, we can’t let down and that was big today.”

The Tigers (2-1-1) ruined Samantha Sample’s shutout bid when Dana O’Boye scored with 24.3 seconds remaining.

Healthy diet and regular exercise can help control Type 2 diabetes Dear Dr. K: I recently was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. My doctor said the best thing I can do is to lose weight. Why? Dear Reader: Type 2 diabetes usually starts after a person becomes an adult. It is by far the most common type of diabetes. It has been clear for many years people who are overweight are at much greater risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. In the past 20 years, research discoveries have begun to explain why.

We used to think of fat as an inert layer of insulation. In recent years, we’ve discovered the special cells inside fat (“fat cells”) are not inert at all: They are little hormone-producing factories. The hormones they make travel through the blood to the brain and other organs. They influence a person’s appetite and metabolism. They also influence the amount of sugar in the blood. Diabetes, of course, is marked by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood and urine.

Your doctor’s recommendation is right in line with guidelines from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). They urge all people newly diagnosed with diabetes to lose weight as the first step to controlling their blood sugar. The best way to lose weight? By eating more healthfully and exercising more.

A blood test called HbA1c estimates average blood sugar levels over the past two or three months. People with diabetes should aim for an HbA1c level of less than 7 percent. Losing weight and exercising more can decrease your HbA1c level by one or two percentage points. That might not sound like much, but a two-point reduction in HbA1c can put your blood sugar in the normal range, dramatically reducing your chances of developing a diabetes-related health problem.

Not all people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight. But even if your weight is in the healthy range, losing three to five pounds can help control your blood sugar.

What’s most important is the diet delivers fewer calories than you burn each day.

That imbalance translates into weight loss.

For lasting weight loss, choose an appealing diet so you can stick with it. (Of course, for long-term health, it’s also important to choose a diet based on healthy foods.)

So how can you cut calories? First, eat smaller portions. Also, substitute lower-calorie alternatives for high-calorie foods.

For example, have grilled fish and steamed vegetables for dinner instead of a plate of pasta.

It also helps to stick with a regular eating schedule. Plan meals and snacks that are no more than four hours apart to help keep you from becoming too hungry and overeating.

I have known many patients who were able to control their Type 2 diabetes with just diet and exercise. They did not need medicine. Diet and exercise really are that effective.

5’6” tall and weighs less than 100 pounds. She also eats like a bird.

My brother thinks she is just thin and doesn’t have a problem, but I think she’s anorexic, and this worries me.

Can you tell me how to know if a person is anorexic? I need to know the signs of anorexia so I can share them with my brother.

– Alisha, Reno, Nevada Alisha: Your fears may not be unfounded. Anorexia nervosa occurs predominantly in teenage girls (90 percent), but it also occurs in males.

A person should see a doctor for possible anorexia if the following signs are prevalent: 1. Intense fear of becoming obese that does not diminish as weight is lost.

2. Disturbance of body image – claims to be overweight even when emaciated.

3. Weight loss of at least 25 percent of original body weight.

4. Refusal to maintain a normal body weight for age and height.

5. No known physical illness that would account for the weight loss.

6. Eats like a bird.

DEAR ABBY My 29-year-old brother died Jeanne unexpectedly last Phillips month. He left behind a wife and 1-year-old son.

Although they lived across the country, she allowed us to bring him home for his funeral and burial. I took care of a lot of the arrangements on this end, while she took care of things there and made travel arrangements.

At 26, I never expected to be planning a funeral. But it has made me realize how unprepared I was for any unforeseen event. Please remind your young readers it’s never too early to take care of some basic plans, including a will.

As a single mother, I know how unprepared I was if something should happen to me. While it’s not a pleasant thought, it’s tougher on the survivors if nothing is in place. When it comes to mortality, it’s better to be practical and prepared. – Still Grieving, But Now Prepared Dear Still Grieving: Please accept my sympathy for the untimely loss of your brother.

Mortality isn’t a subject young people usually dwell on. But if they want what they have to be distributed according to their wishes, or if there are children involved, it’s important to put their wishes in writing.

Dear Abby: “Don” and I have been married for 44 years, and our marriage has had its ups and downs. We are now both retired. The problem is Don does not get along with our 43-year-old son, “Chris.” (He gets along fine with our two daughters.)

Don and Chris have very different personalities and little in common. Chris lives abroad but visits frequently and stays with us. During his most recent visit, his father was distant and rude to him. It has happened before and is hurtful to Chris and to me.

I have tried speaking with my husband about it, but he never has a good reason for his behavior. When my mother heard what happened, she got angry and said if I don’t divorce Don, she doesn’t want to see either of us again.

Blackwood is a useful slam tool.

However, inexperienced players rely on it too heavily. First, you should use it only when you are confident that you have the values for a slam and are just double checking that you are not missing two aces for a small slam, or one ace (or perhaps a king) for a grand slam.

Blackwood can also be unhelpful when you have a void. Look at today’s South hand. He opens two clubs and rebids two spades over partner’s two-diamond response. When partner raises to three spades, promising support and some values, South could jump to four no-trump, but after partner admits to one ace, what would he do? Does North have the useless heart ace or the invaluable diamond ace? South won’t know.

Instead, South should use control-bidding. Over three spades, he continues with four clubs, showing a first-round control in that suit (ace or void) and expressing slam interest.

Here, responder will continue with four diamonds, telling South about his ace. South could then jump to seven spades, because real bridge players don’t use Blackwood! Or he could cautiously check that partner really does have the ace. (Yes, South has a possible club loser, but, if necessary, he hopes to discard clubs from dummy on his diamonds and ruff the club six on the board.)

Here, after West leads, say, the heart king against seven spades, South ruffs and cashes the spade ace.

When East discards, declarer cashes his top clubs, ruffs the club six on the board, draw trumps, and claims.
