Get ready for Best of the Fox Love a certain store in Kane County? Run a business that you think deserves some public recognition?

The Kane County Chronicle will kick off voting for its 2014 Best of the Fox Readers’ Choice Awards on Tuesday.

Best of the Fox is an annual competition where Chronicle readers are invited to vote for their favorite businesses in dozens of categories.

The business that receives the most votes in each category earns the title “Best of the Fox.” In addition, the two runner-up businesses in each category earn the title “One of the Best.”

New categories are those for best ribs, gyros, beer garden, martini, chicken wings and summer-fun park district location.

Of course, the contest still features its most popular voting categories, which include those for best salon, breakfast, dentist, ice cream/custard and martial arts studio.

‘Art on Fire’ hydrants again headed to Geneva KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – After its inaugural venture last fall, the “Art on Fire” hydrant design program returns for a second year in Geneva.

The city of Geneva, in collaboration with the Cultural Arts Commission, is seeking artists to adopt and paint fire hydrants. Last year, 41 hydrants were painted as part of Art on Fire.

With more than 1,800 fire hydrants throughout Geneva, plenty of fire hydrants as blank canvasses remains for artists to submit new entries this spring.

“This year, we hope to fan the flames of creativity and engagement by reaching even more artists,” Mayor Kevin Burns said in a statement.

Burns initiated Art on Fire last year.

The program is free and open to the public, but participants need to submit an application by May 2. The application can be found at www. geneva.il.us or picked up at Geneva City Hall, 22 S. First St., Geneva.

City staff will review and approve all application designs to make sure they do not compromise the visibility of the hydrants for firefighters in an emergency. Artists will be allowed to paint their hydrants through the end of May. The city’s Public Arts Advisory Committee and Cultural Arts Commission will judge the hydrants and award prizes to the top three design winners.

People can take a virtual tour of all the 2013 decorated hydrants on an interactive map posted on the city’s website. The map will be updated this summer to include the 2014 submissions.

Voting for Best of the Fox will run through April 30 and can be done using a smartphone, tablet or PC. Readers are invited to cast a vote in as many categories as they would like each day, but they can only vote one time each day in any specific category.

Results will be published May 24 in the Chronicle and on its website, www.kcchronicle.com.

Nuckles remembered for role in Batavia legion

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Members of the Batavia American Legion are remembering John Nuckles as a strong participant in the group, a man who wasn’t afraid to knock on their doors and collect their annual dues.

Nuckles died Thursday at the age of 92. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and then went on to become a 63-year member of Batavia’s American Legion, one of the longest to serve in that group.

On the legion’s website, there is a page devoted to Nuckles.

He also belonged to Batavia VFW Post 1197 and the Batavia Moose Lodge, but his friends in the legion credited

U.S. Navy veteran was part of group for 63 years Nuckles with an especially strong devotion to that group.

One member, Jerry DuVall, said the Batavia legion might long ago have been diminished without Nuckles’ efforts.

“I’d say if John bled, it would be American Legion blood,” DuVall said. “He was instrumental in keeping the post alive. … He did a lot for the post.”

According to his obituary, Nuckles was born Sept. 2, 1921, in West Virginia. He was married to Phyllis Loughridge in 1948. He is survived by five children, Joyce Teasley, Janet Brandenburg, Carol Crab-

tree and Ronald and Randall Nuckles. He was preceded in death by his wife, as well as a son, Roger.

A visitation is set from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Moss Family Funeral Home, 2090 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. DuVall said legion members will have a presence. He said members will dress in uniform to attend, and there will be a special ceremony at 7 p.m. to honor their friend. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Interment will be at River Hills Memorial Park at 1650 S. River St. in Batavia.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke called Nuckles “one of the strong voices on behalf of the whole veterans movement, not only in Batavia, but in Kane County.” Schielke said when Nuckles took his oath, “it became a lifetime commitment.”

“He was about as committed and passionate on the subject as anyone I’ve ever run into,” Schielke said. “His memory lives on through his service.”

would talk to him and stress that “you young guys” needed to get more involved with the post.

“And I was in my 50s,” Jordan said.

Jordan, DuVall and Schielke all remembered Nuckles as a member who would make sure people would pay their dues. He would always show up in person to collect.

“He’d go knocking on doors,” DuVall said. “He was persistent. … He wasn’t shy.”

Looking for geese? Go out, take a gander After a day of “dating,” Canada geese head back to the safety of open water for the night.

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto Remember when Canada geese were a fly-by-night group?

Back then, before our resident goose populations took hold, it was big news when these large, majestic birds blew into town. Flying in V-formation, honking and squawking, they’d land by the hundreds on rivers and ponds. People, myself included, would go out of their way to take in the spectacle of what were then considered “rare birds.”

But you had to hurry.

“The Geese,” as we called them, never stayed around long. They had a long journey ahead, either north to their nesting grounds or south to their winter range, and our area was a mere stopover as they made their way along

their migration route.

Boy, how times have changed. Thanks to a onetwo punch of nonmigratory “giant” Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) being introduced to the area, along

with landscape modifications that have produced yearround sources of food and open water, these birds are anything but rare. Today, instead of moving toward a group of Canada geese, people

tend to move away, quickly, dodging both the animals and the ample evidence they leave behind.

But if you’re one of the few folks who still find Canada geese fascinating, now’s a

great time to pay a visit to a local pond or riverside park. There’s a lot going on in gooseland. For one, migrating flocks are heading back north. If you’re not sure whether the geese you’re watching are migratory or residents, move around just a little bit. Migrating geese are much warier than our nonmigrating birds and will take off at, literally, the drop of a hat.

If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a goose sporting a neck collar.

Neck collars designate birds that are being tracked as part of assorted research projects.

The collars come in many colors and usually are printed with three or four characters, depending on the research and the Canada goose subspecies involved. (That’s right, not all Canada geese are the same. More than 10 subspecies have been identified. In

Then it’s on to the next course, picking through leaf litter, followed by drinks back at the retention pond.

Canada goose dating is a prelude to, of course, Canada goose mating, which normally would already be underway but, with this year’s lingering cold, may be delayed another week or two.

Sooner rather than later though, Mom Goose will be on the lookout for a suitable location for nesting.

Although most geese prefer secluded locations, individuals that are used to humans may opt for seemingly unnatural sites like parking lot islands or garden beds.

The flower boxes on St. Charles’ Illinois Street bridge, for instance, are perennial goose favorites, likely due to their proximity to water as well as being relatively predator proof.

Once settled, the female will begin the process of laying eggs, one a day, until her clutch is complete. Only after the last egg is laid does she begin incubating; that way, she ensures the young will all hatch within a few hours of each other. Incubation lasts about four weeks, so this year we can count on seeing Canada goose families, each complete with mom, dad and a gaggle of goslings, sometime in late April or early May. Even though Canada geese are ubiquitous throughout our Tri-Cities landscapes, they can still put on quite a show, if you know what to look for. Don’t be silly. Go out and take a gander.

But even our resident Canada geese, common as they might seem, can provide plenty of entertainment.

This is the time of year when geese transition between winter “surviving” mode and springtime “thriving” mode. Although the birds still prefer the safety of open water and their flockmates during the overnight hours, during the daytime you’ll see it’s a whole different story. Bonded pairs are renewing their acquaintances and young geese are pairing off for the first time. It’s The Dating Game, Branta canadensis style.

I suppose the scientific term for their behavior is courtship, but I can’t help but anthropomorphize – that is, apply human traits to nonhuman creatures – as I watch pairs strolling along local park paths and bike trails.

“Where would you like to go today, honey?”

“Oh, I dunno. Maybe out to eat? Just give me a sec while I run to the bat... Oops!

Never mind...”

This past week, we’ve had the pleasure of watching a pair of Canada geese break away from the flock to enjoy quiet interludes in the athletic fields near Hickory Knolls.

They’ve left their biodegradable marks, for sure, but also have enriched our daily birdwatching with their devoted behavior toward one another.

The male goose, larger than his female companion, typically walks somewhat behind his mate as they make their way around the broad, open space. As the female waddles slowly forward, the male lags behind, grabbing occasional bill-full of grass as he keeps a watchful eye for potential threats.

Five percent raises on track to County Board consideration

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A subject that once sparked discussion at Kane County Board committee meetings has, in recent weeks, been moved up the chain of approval with little debate.

In a 4-1 vote, the Finance/ Budget Committee this week moved a set of 5 percent raises proposed for four directors to Wednesday’s Executive Committee meeting.

Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, voted no.

Committee members said little about the raises, which are the last of nine to go through the committee approval process.

Since February, County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen has repeatedly presented information about the salary increases, which are intended to help bring the directors’ salaries closer to the region’s average, he has said.

He has said the intent is to protect talent and reward achievement.

While discussion about the raises has dwindled at recent meetings, the topic generated much consideration when Lauzen first introduced the concept. The Finance/ Budget Committee, for example, spent an hour in closed session about the topic last month.

The County Board was expected to discuss the first five compensation adjustments during its March meeting, but Lauzen postponed the item to April.

With that delay, he has said, the board then could talk about those increases and the four that still needed to go through the committee process in one discussion.

The Executive Committee is expected Wednesday to set the April 8 County Board agenda. The preliminary draft includes the nine proposed raises.

He was a loving son and brother and a devoted uncle sharing many special memories with his nieces and nephews, whom he adored. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Mildred “Mickey” Feldott, 83, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora. She was born July 10, 1930, in Aurora, the daughter of Aloysius and Augusta (nee Weiss) Seppelfrick. She was united in marriage to Leon J. Feldott on Oct. 1, 1955, at St. Theresa Church in Aurora.

Mickey was born and raised in Aurora and was crowned Miss Aurora in 1947. She met the love of her life, Leon, and together they settled in as one of the pioneer farm families of Fermilab. She greatly loved the farm life. Mickey enjoyed arts and crafts, and volunteered her talents to helping design the decorations for the Holy Cross Bazaar.

Most of all, she was a warm and loving woman, a dear wife, mother and grandmother and always a wonderful friend.

She is survived by her children, Renae (Dr. Gerald) Winnan of Frederick, Md., Nancy (Frank) Patterson of Elburn, Diane Feldott of Elburn and David L. Feldott of Elburn; two grandchildren, Ryan Winnan of Frederick, Md., and Sarah (John) Moran of Alexandria, Md.; her sister, Clarine Gengler of Aurora; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents, Mickey was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Leon; her brother, Ivan Seppell; her brother-in-law, Eddie Gengler; and her niece, Jody Rossler.

He was a 63-year member of the Batavia American Legion and VFW Post 1197 and a 50-year member of the Batavia Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his children, Joyce (Teddy) Teasley of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Janet Brandenburg of Batavia, Carol Crabtree of Elgin, Ronald Nuckles of Batavia and Randall Nuckles of DeKalb; grandchildren, Carey, Jeannie, Cassandra, Roger Jr., Nick, Tyler and Monica; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and three sisters-in-law, Darlene Stoffa, Jackie Nuckles and Bert Nuckles.

New company selected for brush pickup

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The St. Charles Township Road District has contracted with Kramer Tree Service to pick up the brush in unincorporated St. Charles Township.

This will replace the previous brush pickup program that was in place for more than 20 years.

Clerk’s office disputes teen voting snag

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham is disputing a complaint that a 17-year-old almost did not get registered to vote, despite having proper identification.

At issue is a complaint from Leslie Juby, a Geneva District 304 School Board member, to the Illinois Board of Elections regarding her daughter Madelyn’s experience trying to register to vote.

State law now allows 17-year-olds to vote in a primary if they will be 18 by the November election.

Juby said Madelyn had her photo student identification, library card and Social Security number – all legally acceptable forms of identification.

But she said Cunningham’s staff kept insisting the teen needed a photo ID with a signature, which is not required.

Kane County Supervisor of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock said a photo ID with a signature was not an issue.

She said the teen had only the student identification card and did not remember her Social Security number.

“That is not correct,” Fahnestock said of Juby’s complaint. “She did not have two forms of identification.

She only had her student ID.” Juby said Madelyn, a Geneva High School senior, had the last four digits of her Social Security number because Juby herself dictated it to her over the phone when she filled out her registration.

Juby said when she got to the point of signing the registration, she was asked for a photo ID with a signature.

When she did not have it,

Juby said the clerk’s staff threw it in the garbage.

“That is not true at all,” Fahnestock said. “We just needed to verify the information. She came back with her mother and ... friend. They were anxious, and we wanted to have answers for them.

We said, ‘We want to register your daughter, and we want her to vote.’ ” Fahnestock said neither Madelyn nor her mother could remember the last four digits of her Social Security number, but a friend who was with her did know them.

“We accepted the last four digits, and we would be able to verify that information,” Fahnestock said. “We were glad she was able to vote.”

Juby disputed that version of events, saying her daughter told election officials that the last four digits of her Social Security number were on the first registration that was thrown away.

“She said, ‘It’s on my other registration – the one you guys threw away,’ ” Juby said. “And they walked over to the garbage and pulled it out to copy down the last four digits on the new voter registration.”

Juby said her goal in making a complaint to the state election officials is for Cunningham’s staff to have proper training in registering 17-year-olds to vote.

Cunningham said his office keeps track of every complaint that comes in.

“We will go over it,” Cunningham said of Juby’s complaint.

Bernadette Harrington, legal counsel to the Illinois State Board of Elections, said Juby’s complaint was received, and the director of voter and registration services would be in contact with Cunningham’s office.

OPINIONS OUR VIEW: THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN Thumbs up to the news this week that the Shodeen family has purchased the old Mill Race Inn. The Mill Race Inn is a quintessential landmark along the Fox River in downtown Geneva, and it was a substantial blow to the city when the scenic restaurant closed in January 2011. While the Shodeen family’s plans for the property have yet to be made public, Mayor Kevin Burns called the Sho-Deen Inc. purchase “yet another signature project that will beautify the east bank of the Fox River.”

Burns said the project could end up part of a TIF district. While TIF districts are sometimes unpopular with residents, allowing this key location to continue to languish would be a considerably less favorable scenario for the city.

Flooding on the site has been problematic, which surely added to the degree of difficulty in finding a buyer willing to redevelop what otherwise would be considered prime real estate. We’re glad Sho-Deen was willing to take the chance, and hope to see this historic site revitalized so that it once again becomes a tremendous asset for Geneva.

Thumbs down to the voter registration snag experienced by a Geneva teenager and her family.

Madelyn Juby, a 17-year-old Geneva High School senior, went into Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham’s office to register for the election earlier this month with a photo ID, library card and Social Security number but initially was not allowed to register, according to her family.

Her mother, a Geneva School District 304 Board member, said employees told her daughter she could not register because Madelyn did not have an ID with a signature, which was not noted as a requirement on the clerk’s website. Cunningham and Supervisor of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock disputed that version of events Friday, saying the problem was Madelyn Juby did not have two forms of ID. Leslie Juby went to the clerk’s office to demand answers, and said it took about an hour before her daughter was allowed to register by using the last four digits of her social security number. Leslie Juby called the episode “disheartening.”

We agree, and are glad she responded by filing a complaint with the Illinois Board of Elections, as well as contacting Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon.

Cunningham and his staff owe it to Kane County residents to thoroughly dissect what went awry in this situation, and make certain training for anyone in the office involved with registering voters is airtight.

Not everyone would have had the persistence to troubleshoot this issue like the Juby family. There is no excuse for confusion or incompetence that potentially could deter a voter from casting her ballot.

We are trying to make it clear through the traditional press that any raises given any employees, including nine managers of 1,250 county employees, will come from savings gained in other areas. We should really celebrate that these raises will not cost you one cent more.

When our county management team saves substantial amounts of money in one area and strengthens our collective financial position within a frozen property tax levy, we need your direct and indirect permission to reallocate some of those savings where they will benefit you the most.

I promised to deliver “management best practices.” These include annual performance reviews for executive directors, terminating employment of any senior executives who are not performing “superior” work for you and your neighbors, but then also paying directors based on the merit of their performance in an open, transparent and board-participatory manner, prescribed by county ordinance at least the “average” of what their relative peer groups earn. It would be a terrible error in practical management judgment of being penny wise and pound foolish to do otherwise. You and I want our public employees focused on performance, not pay.

I will save as much as I can in

other areas so that any of our actions cost you as little as possible.

In exchange for about a nickel on your property tax bill you are getting frozen county and forest preserve property tax levies (for three years in a row – since I announced my intention to run for chairman), spending that is less than our revenues, a strengthened county balance sheet, and fulfillment of our service and financial commitments to provide justice (courts), public safety (sheriff), public health (now nationally recognized and accredited), roads (constructed and cleared – no matter how much snow falls!), free and safe elections (county clerk) and much more.

Most of it is going to the schools.

Do the schools really need it? I don’t think so. If the children get from their parents, iPads and iPods, and they have all that, why are we paying extra for their education? I am a baby boomer.

However, why don’t they understand the difficulty it is for the taxpayers, who are already overburdened with taxes and fees and electrical costs and hospitalization costs? They say, well, we have money for an arch?

I’m calling in response to “Shame on us.” In my defense, as a voter in Kane County, I want to let you know that I do want to help. The problem is that I am tapped out. I work part time. I open my paycheck, and it’s less $200 in taxes that I could really use right now. I go to the grocery store, and I am taxed. I put gas in my car, and I am taxed. I’m lucky I can pay for my health insurance, my car insurance and my life insurance. I do want to help, but the problem is I am tapped out right now. When times get better, I will try to do what I can do to help people with disabilities. It’s not that I’m against it. But right now, it’s not a good time. According to the results from the voters in Kane County, it looks like they feel the same way. It should say, “Shame on our federal, state and local governments” for taxing us the way they do.

Animal control, and much more Sauceda aims to change department’s name to Kane County Animal Care and Control

ENEVA – Most of the duties performed by Kane County Animal Control don’t attract the level of media attention it got this month when Administrator Robert Sauceda led the efforts to move about 100 animals from an impounded petting zoo.

The event spurred an outpouring of support that included dozens of volunteers and donations of various supplies, resources and money.

County Board member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, said last week he liked that Animal Control set the precedent that it will help all animals and not just cats and dogs, like it had in the past.

This, he said, has “really shown the public what we can do.”

Sauceda agreed that the situation with the petting zoo animals demonstrated what his department is capable of and what its goal and mission is going forward.

“This was a turning point for us,” Sauceda said.

Since joining Animal Control last year – he started as billing manager before the County Board named him interim administrator in November – Sauceda has maintained the department’s main role of preventing rabies while finding more ways to involve the community with his agency and better promote what it does.

“People think we’re just animal control,” he said.

Sauceda said he is seeking County Board approval to change the department’s name to Kane County Animal Care and Control to better reflect its responsibilities, which include running a shelter for animals up for adoption.

Cats and dogs are mainstays at the shelter, but Animal Control also gets other species, including goats, bunnies, snakes and turtles, Sauceda said. In February, he said, police notified An-

“We try to reach out to the rescues all over the state,” he said. “If they’re state certified, we’ll work with them.”

Each animal under Animal Control’s care starts with a

Only sick, injured and aggressive animals are euthanized, he said. Using those guidelines, he said, the number of animals euthanized decreased

from 123 in 2012 to 45 in 2013.

To raise awareness for the shelter, Animal Control will host a dog jog and 5K run May 17. Proceeds will benefit the pets at the shelter, and teams have the option of raising donations as well.

He commended Sauceda and his staff for handling the “tragic” petting zoo situation “without missing a beat” in providing the agency’s dayto-day service. The petting zoo situation also has helped Animal Control build relationships with the farming community, Sauceda said.

Should such a situation happen again, he said, Animal Control has people to call for help.

About 50 to 75 people ran away once police arrived at party in 2013

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The adults charged in a Batavia underage drinking party must pay a total of $850 in fines and costs, according to Kane County court records.

In a bench trial Tuesday, Kane County Associate Judge Elizabeth Flood sentenced Vanessa Fania, 40, to five months of conditional discharge and $500 in fines and costs, records show.

Scott Kelley, also 40, received supervision and was ordered to pay $350, according to records.

Both are next due in court Sept. 23.

Fania, of Batavia, and Kelley, of Montgomery, each were charged with hosting an unlawful residential gathering. The charges stemmed from a party in the 200 block of South Prairie Street on Nov. 1, 2013.

Batavia police responded to the residence at about 9:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a loud party.

About 50 to 75 people ran away once police arrived, police have said.

An investigation reportedly led police to a large gathering of minors inside the home.

Several people also were in a detached garage and a bonfire was in the backyard, police have said.

Police charged 21 minors with underage drinking and questioned 12 additional juveniles who were at the party but not drinking.

The key component for me to accept a smaller personal injury claim is, “Will the client help me help them?”

Below is an example to help clarify my question.

A plaintiff is in an automobile accident and suffered some strained ligaments.

This is known as a “soft-tissue damage” case because only soft tissue was damaged (i.e. no broken bones). These are the

toughest cases to litigate because there is no concrete evidence of an injury, and they are the most likely to be rejected by the attorney.

Plaintiff accrued $7,500 in medical bills after X-rays, doctor visits and physical therapy for several months. Plaintiff then consults with me as to whether I will accept his case.

When I evaluate small personal injury claims, I ask the potential client to bring me the medical records, the medical billings, and to authorize the medical providers in person to speak to me and my staff.

If the potential client retrieves the medical records

and the medical billings, and authorizes me to speak with the medical providers, I will almost always accept the case. The client has saved me invaluable time.

What took the client an hour or so would take me several hours – I have to draft and submit HIPAA requests to each biller and medical provider, call often to determine whether my claims have been received and processed, etc. Instead, I can spend my time verifying the billings and negotiating the claim.

The only other major reasons I have rejected small personal injury claims? The client was at fault, the stat-

ute of limitations has run, or the client has unrealistic expectations.

The above scenario is not going to settle for $50,000 plus.

Road project in S. Elgin set to begin Tuesday SOUTH ELGIN – Weather permitting, a road construction project on Route 25/Stearns Road to Dunham Road in South Elgin will begin Tuesday, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The work will involve complete reconstruction of a portion of Route 25/Stearns Road, construction of additional traffic lanes, a new storm sewer and traffic signals.

A new roadway bridge span, along with a new bridge carrying the Union Pacific Railroad over Route 25, will be built. The anticipated completion date is Aug. 31, 2015. T. CHARLES – Grant Spellman can be patient when it comes to tennis.

The St. Charles North senior said he and his father devoted hours to figuring out a racket stringing machine that was a Christmas present a few years ago.

“That day we spent like 4½ hours doing like one racket, just teaching ourselves,” Spellman said. “It’s hard to learn. Between the YouTube videos and advice from other pros I know the area, we eventually pieced it together.

Now we can do it in about 45, 40 minutes, but it started off a lot more difficult.”

While adjusting to a new doubles partner for his senior year would seem to call upon Spellman’s patience once more, the returning IHSA state qualifier isn’t so sure that will be necessary. North junior Aaron Amburgey – a transfer from suburban Louisville, Ky. – comes to the North Stars with a strong background, and is expected to emerge as a worthy partner for a promising No. 1 North Stars tandem.

Two home-grown former Reds, Barry Larkin and Ken Griffey Jr., played at Archbishop Moeller in the Queen City. The Knights face the current Crusaders – back-to-back Ohio Division I state champions and nationally ranked by USA Today – Friday.

“You know what I like to do; I like to go out and schedule as hard as we can, and I think we’ve accomplished that yet again,” Knights coach Brian Aversa said.

Aversa grew up in West Chester, Ohio, outside Cincinnati, and called the iconic King’s Island amusement park “my babysitter down

there.” He remained connected to the area after his family relocated to Geneva during Aversa’s freshman year of high school, and recently became a frequent winter caller to Crusaders coach Tim Held.

This time, Aversa reached Held early enough to get the Knights on the schedule.

Opting for a change after last season’s St. Louis trip included a freak snowstorm, Aversa also arranged games against Cincinnati Elder and Dixie Heights in Crestview Hills, Ky. Past history also drew Burlington Central to its spring break destination. Coach Kyle Nelson coached a college team in Myrtle Beach, S.C., a few

years ago, giving him insight into the Cal Ripken Experience and its slate of tournaments.

“We looked for a place that we felt like we’d be able to go there and get some games in, and since it’s all turf, we thought that would be a good match,” Nelson said. “And we can get workouts and practices in outside for something a little different.”

Anything other than jostling with other spring sports teams for gym time and battling cabin fever sounds good to players and coaches.

As Holm attests, you can even escape a few miles down the road – weather permitting.

“Being a head coach, you get several emails a year from parents saying they’re moving in, that their kid played this sport or that sport, and the majority of them don’t pan out,” said Masoncup, who coaches girls basketball and boys tennis at North. “And this one actually did. We were lucky to get him.”

Amburgey grew up playing youth tennis tournaments in Kentucky and enjoyed substantial success his first two years of high school playing doubles in his former hometown of Crestwood, Ky. He said his family researched North’s tennis program when considering relocation options in the Chicago area, and came away enthused. That impression was solidified when he started hitting with Spellman upon moving to St. Charles, and the two have worked to develop chemistry for months leading

“I haven’t really played with a really big hitter like him,” Amburgey said. “My old partner was more of a consistent guy, a little bit smaller, so I think he actually suits my game a little bit better, because he can get some of the higher balls and things like that.”

Amburgey acknowledged

he’s not exactly sure what to expect from Illinois competition.

“There’s probably more people here so it could be even a more high level,” Amburgey said. “I haven’t seen some of the better players yet, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Spellman’s presence should provide a measure of comfort. A returning three-

year varsity player with 85 career wins, Spellman won two rounds in the IHSA State Tournament last year playing with Keith Hedges, who projects to play at No. 2 doubles this year with Mitch Riggs.

Doubles is a major point of emphasis for Masoncup, who sees huge potential for Spellman and Amburgey’s one season together.

“We’ve been extremely fortunate with doubles players since I took over, and together, they have the least amount of weaknesses of any kids we’ve ever had,” Masoncup said. “So they have the potential to be the best we’ve ever had, and that’s saying a lot.”

Spellman has been accepted to Stanford. He does not plan to play tennis there – not intercollegiately, at least – but is thrilled to attend the prestigious university in northern California.

He figures his commitment to tennis – on and off the court – helped his admissions cause.

“I had a lot of sports-related activities on my application, not just playing, but as work,” Spellman said. “I’ve taught tennis and I string tennis rackets as a job out of my basement, so sports are a big part of what I do, and I think because I reflected that in my application, it helped me at that school specifically because they also appreciate sports and athletes.”

Turns out Amburgey isn’t just a potentially dynamite partner for Spellman – he’s also a prime customer.

“He breaks strings all the time,” Spellman said.

Cincinnati, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and western Tennessee loom as spring break destinations for various Chronicle-area baseball teams next week.

Yup, the Sun Belt usually beckons this time of year, although Lincoln Highway is a gateway for some getaway games, too.

Batavia scheduled Kaneland, Willowbrook and Naperville North for neutral-site action at Wheaton College’s Pfund Stadium, whose artificial surface offers a happy medium between tundra and sand.

“I’m telling you, it’s a lot less hassle,” Bulldogs coach Matt Holm said. “I would like to lock in several years down the road, too, just for weather purposes.”

There’s another way of getting around Mother Nature, of course, and it hinges on traveling any which way but north.

St. Charles North, forced to find new plans when its usual tournament in downstate Marion did not align with spring break, is bound for Dyersburg, Tenn. Kaneland, a recent visitor to the St. Louis area, has switched its itinerary to metro Cincinnati, and actually is set to watch the Reds host the Cardinals

Juicy email spices up Cadets’ waiting game Marmion baseball coach Dave Rakow received a recent email from a Toronto Blue Jays representative inquiring about the pitching schedule of Cadets senior ace left-hander Alex Troop.

Rakow probably had to suppress a number of smart-aleck responses that came to mind because the reality for the Cadets – and just about everyone else in northern Illinois – is they don’t know when it’ll finally be time to play ball.

In the absence of actual games – most baseball and softball teams have seen the starts of their seasons delayed the past two weeks by subpar weather and field conditions – an email like the one Rakow received will have to suffice for early-season excitement.

The Cadets already have had their first three scheduled games canceled, and that’s the norm for teams in the area. Rakow said he’s only surveyed the Cadets’

field once so far, and he came away discouraged.

“Once it thaws out this week, we’ll be able to go out there and take a look and see where we’re at, but the one time we went out there, it was not pretty,” Rakow said.

Last year, part of the infield grass in front of first base on Marmion’s field was plagued by pooling water that caused the Cadets headaches much of the season. Rakow said the school’s maintenance staff tried to troubleshoot the area during the offseason and more drainage work is planned after this season is finished, but for now, the whole field is soggy enough that it’s hard to tell whether progress has been made.

As for the kind of progress Rakow is more focused on – the pitching, hitting and fielding performance of his Cadets – that’s also in waitand-see-mode.

The Cadets are one of the area’s lucky teams in that they have a fieldhouse to

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab bolster indoor practices, but Rakow is still driving himself batty trying to make sense of what he’s watching.

“I’m worried the first time we get to go outside is going to be our first game, and I don’t know how it’s going to go,” Rakow said. “When you’re in the cage, when the ball comes off the bat, you’re not really sure if it’s a popout to the shortstop or a gapper to left-center. The infielders haven’t realty seen the ball off the grass yet. As a coach, it makes you a little bit nervous.”

Marmion is a senior-heavy team this spring, which Rakow said has helped keep the natural cabin fever from derailing the Cadets’ sense of purpose.

“You never want it to be this kind of weather but I’d

rather have a senior-heavy team when you’re kind of struggling to stay focused than the alternative,” Rakow said. “If it was last year, I think it would have been harder. The maturity level would have been not where it is now.”

One of those seniors, of course, is Troop, a Batavia resident who has committed to Michigan State. Rakow said the Blue Jays’ overture marked the first time a MLB team has sent him a scouting-related correspondence since Marmion and Illinois product Matt Milroy pitched for the Cadets. Milroy is a minor leaguer in the Miami Marlins’ organization.

Rakow said the email about Troop bodes well.

“Once you’re on the radar for pro guys, usually you stick there, even if you don’t get drafted,” Rakow said.

Moving on: As noted in Friday’s Chronicle, St. Charles North graduate Quinten Payne plans to transfer from

Ball State, where he recently completed his freshman year in the Cardinals’ men’s basketball program.

Payne, who averaged more than 11 minutes a game off the bench, told the Muncie Star Press he likely will look at some of the other schools that recruited him out of high school. Payne originally committed to Loyola but did not end up there after his older brother, Cully Payne, left the Ramblers’ program. “[Ball State] just wasn’t really the right fit for me,” Payne told the Star Press.

“I didn’t see myself really growing with what was there, had to make a decision just as a basketball player, pick the right place for me.”

Ball State went 5-25 under first-year head coach James Whitford.

North drops tight three-set match to Saxons

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com SCHAUMBURG – The Schaumburg boys volleyball team rallied from a six-point deficit to beat St. Charles North, 28-26, in the decisive third set Friday night.

The North Stars lost the first game, 25-17, and won the second, 25-18.

The Saxons led early in the third contest. The North Stars went ahead 9-8 on a block by Jeff Rollins block (20 assists, seven kills, seven digs). North widened the margin to six

points, 17-11, on a tip by Jack Bujko (five kills, four digs, two blocks).

North (1-1) were within one of point winning the match after Brendan Donlevy‘s fifth kill of the night. The Saxons scored the next four points, tied the game 24-all on a block and then took a 25-24 lead on a kill by Nidhin Thomas.

A net violation on Schaumburg (1-0) tied the game up at 25 but the Saxons retook the lead on a kill from Stephen Knitter (10 digs, six kills). The game returned to a tie on a Schaumburg hitting error.

A Romario Rios (eight kills) blast returned the lead to the Saxons and an ace by Cameron Nolan (seven kills, four blocks) clinched the victory.

“We were in the driver’s seat the whole way and then communication got a little quieter. We started playing like were going to lose instead of playing to win,” North coach Todd Weimer said about the third set.

“When you talk less and start thinking they are catching up, catching up, of course you are going to get that loss nine

times out of 10.”

Hitting errors and net violations plagued the team in the first-set loss.

“I saw like eight things I didn’t like [in the first game].

They fixed them and we played well in the second set,” Weimer said. “The team did a heck of a job making a ton of adjustments after that first set.”

While the North Stars tightened their play in the second game, the Saxons suffered from several mistakes.

North’s game point came on a net violation.

“We got a little nervous in the middle,” said Jeff O’Brien, Schaumburg’s coach. ”It was mental lapses [in the second set] so we focused on bringing back what we do well as opposed to trying to do stuff that we are uncomfortable with.

We brought things back to our comfort zone and went from there.”

North Stars sophomore Drew Lanz had nine kills and eight digs. Nic Cook added 16 digs.

The North Stars return to action April 5 at the West Aurora Invite.

Spring break stay-cation is no week at the beach Are we the only people in the county not going anywhere fancy for spring break? No, of course not. It just seems that way to the kids.

When I picked Holly up from soccer practice Tuesday night, she was in rare form.

“It’s not, ‘Are you going anywhere?’ but, ‘Where are you going?’” she repeated, laughing.

Apparently, comparing itineraries to exotic locales was all the rage between soccer drills. Our own plans are super fantabulous, too. Yes, indeed. For one thing, in addition to keeping up with her regular pup-sitting gig, Holly and I will make repeated treks back and forth across the street to care for Victor and Chirpy, the kitty and birdie who live there, while our dear neighbors play in sunny Florida.

(Make no mistake; Holly takes great pride in being trusted with these jobs. I, for my part, enjoy perusing my neighbors’ bookshelves for a good book to borrow, but I digress.)

Yes, Holly is super-pumped about our stay-cation. She plans to “party down.”

“Chirpy, get ready to do the chicken dance!” she quipped, as she slung her soccer bag into the back seat and shut the car door.

My other kid is also excited about our vacation plans.

What kind of mother does that? (Yeah, what was I thinking?)

Always a good time, my nearly 16-yearold son reminded me, wincing. Whatever. And then we’ll all come home and play “clean up, clean up” a la “Barney.”

Come on, you know the ditty. “Clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere. Clean up, clean up, everybody do your share.”

Because, of course, with all that melting snow, all kinds of treasures were revealed.

And I do mean all kinds. In the shrinking snowbank by the garage, I spotted my favorite barrette. I’d all but given it up for lost. But that’s not all that was spotted.

“Mom, there is a spectacular amount of dog poop in the yard. It’s disgusting,” Holly announced after school on that weird day last week when most of the snow suddenly vanished. Yes, it was disgusting, but such is life when you have a dog who had to go outside to do his thing during a polar vortex that didn’t let up for more than TWO WHOLE MONTHS.

I’ll spare you the gory details about just how much dog poop was out there, but take my word for it, it was an impressive amount. And without even being asked, my girl simply picked it all up. Wow. She was disgusted the whole time, but still, bless her heart, she did it.

I encouraged her to consider the winter we just had (shush, I KNOW it’s not over yet), and how irrational it’d have been for any one of us to follow the big-red-dog around the yard during those snowstorms in such frigid conditions to clean up after him, but she was too disgusted to listen.

It’s bad enough he had to be out there.

It was so bitter-cold there were times he did the deed whilst balanced on three paws. (I sure hope he couldn’t hear us giggling from our warm spots on the warm side of the windowsill.)

My comments about the resulting, fascinating sedimentary layers of veritable veterinarian-wannabe research material had little merit, according to my little poop-scooper. (Insert eye-roll here.)

Well, remind me to give the girl a raise.

though (it WAS a lot of poop), so maybe we’ll also hit up the Thai village for their yummy pad thai and pot-stickers.

Yes, and we’ll sit at our favorite seat, by the window. Oh, and then we’ll head over to O’ Sole Mio for dessert, because I’m addicted to their salted caramel gelato. But maybe we should have lunch there, instead? So many sweet choices in Batavia!

Fun food aside, nothing will erase how scandalized Holly was by that chore. And yet, there’s more. You know, the random, odd bits of trash that always seem to surface when the snow melts, along with those tiny empty whiskey bottles that inevitably get tossed into our yard as folks stumble home from whatever good time they were apparently having.

Oh, the sedimentary layers and trash from bygone days! You know, it’s a veritable archaeological dig. It’s a wonder I don’t just home-school. Who needs spring break, anyway? I bet there’s a lot more out there besides poop, whiskey bottles and my favorite barrette.

Maybe we should rent one of those metal-detector thingies? Yeah, that’s the ticket. It’ll be just like a day at the beach.

ST. CHARLES – Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles will host a solo spring art show in honor of Batavia resident Alyce Van Acker, who has contributed to the arts as a painter for 40 years.

The exhibit, “Sharing Color: Forty Years of Painting” will feature work showcasing Van Acker’s mastery of color, technique and abstract style, according to a news release. The exhibit will be comprised of work created by Van Acker over four decades, which will reflect a range of painting styles, the release states.

“Color is – for me – the most avidly enjoyed and magnetizing element to utilize in painting,” Van Acker said in the release. “Through it, I believe my paintings evoke a tranquil luminosity as they speak of land and atmosphere: air, space, sunlight, water and fog. At the same time, each painting is a metaphor of inner and outer experience.”

All the paintings selected for “Sharing Color” were created in 1974 or later, and will include a variety of sizes, ranging from 26-inches by 28-inches to 50-inches by 73-inches.

In addition to applying a variety of techniques to her canvases, Van Acker also manipulates the surface onto which she paints.

“For most of these 40 years, I’ve built my own stretchers, which gave me much freedom in determining size,” Van Acker said in a news re-

Van Acker, who also was Fine Line’s first painting teacher, has taught numerous painting classes since she started in 1980, according to the release.

“In my teaching, I learn much from my students, and in viewing the work of other contemporary painters, I eagerly hope to continue to explore and paint, paint, paint,” she said in the release.

The show will run from April 17 through May 23 in the Kavanagh Gallery at Fine Line, 37W570 Bolcum Road, St. Charles.

There also will be an artist’s reception, which will take place in the gallery from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2. Van Acker will speak at 6 p.m. that day.

‘Le Week-end’ serves up deft humor, insight

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post One of the joys of attending the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival was the generous helping of adult-oriented romance on offer, from Nicole Holofcener’s funny and wise “Enough Said” to the ruefully triumphant Chilean drama “Gloria.” One of the sparkliest jewels in that crown was “Le Week-End,” an alternately prickly and knowing tone poem to desire and disappointment whose light touch belies far deeper, darker human understandings.

“Le Week-End” begins on a train, which in this case is conveying Meg and Nick – an academic couple from Birmingham, England – to a Paris getaway. While a gorgeous jazz score plays, we watch as they engage in what are obviously age-old travel rituals (“You’ve got the euros”), in a scene that recalls Stanley Donen’s 1967 marriage travelogue, “Two for the Road.” Recall the most stinging exchange in that film: “What kind of people sit like that without a word to say to each other?” asked Audrey Hepburn’s character, observing a couple in a restaurant. “Married people,” Albert Finney replied sourly.

“Le Week-End” possesses that same tone of wintry, hard-gained wisdom, as Meg and Nick’s sojourn reignites youthful passions on the one hand, and years of accumulated resentments and regrets on the other.

Such a candid portrait of warts-and-all intimacy would be a slow, depressing slog were it not for the fact that it has been so gracefully executed. Roger Michell, known best for such sweet-natured romantic comedies as “Notting Hill,”

“It’s ... beige,” a crestfallen Meg murmurs when they enter what will be the first of their hotel rooms. “There’s a certain light-brownness about it, yes,” Nick replies, a tad defensively. At first Meg seems to be the heedless romantic of the two, eager to splash out on pricey dinners, talking about the Zumba classes she’s taking to “redesign” her body. Nick worries about money and “likes things settled.” But gradually, “Le Week-End” reveals gnarlier truths beneath the neat categories, especially in bed, where Nick tries to rekindle amatory passion and is curtly

rebuffed. “You’re hot,” he says to Meg at one point.

“Hot but cold.”

Oof. “Le Week-End” continues in this vein, the exchanges alternating between tender and venomous, until a human wild card arrives on the scene in the form of Jeff Goldblum, who introduces notes of anarchic, daffy humor that send the film into flights of escalating, antic fancy – a crescendo that climaxes in a breathtakingly frank dinner-table aria to rival anything those battling, bickering Westons of Osage County can dish out.

As a portrait of middle-age boredom, dissatisfaction, fury and creeping mortality, “Le Week-End” may sound to some viewers like it’s too close to the bone to be that much fun.

But in the capable hands

of these fine filmmakers and actors, even its most bitter observations about life and aging are nearly always reliably balanced by moments of warmth, understanding and out-and-out screwball humor.

The late writer Nora Ephron once said that the last thing you know is your effect. “Le Week-End” pays homage to that notion with a combination of resignation and heartening good cheer.

What kind of people go to Paris only to fight and cry, laugh and play and behave like fools? Married people, of course.

C’est l’amour.

• “Le Week-End” received three-and-a-half stars out of four. It is rated R and contains profanity and some sexual content. The film runs 93 minutes.

Dating, peer pressure collide with teen’s morals Dear Abby: I’m 13, and my classmates are just beginning to “date.” Sometimes what this means is, “Hey, do you want to go to my house, get drunk and have sex?” There’s already a pregnant girl in our school. She’s 12.

I’m trying not to get involved in any of this, but I’m constantly being teased for not holding a guy’s hand, let alone not having had my first kiss. I have learned to deal with it, but my problem is there’s this one guy who has been flirting with me.

“Jon” is sweet and nice, but he’s part of the popular crowd.

I’m afraid if he asks me out, he’ll end up trying to get me drunk.

He’s different from the people he hangs out with, but I still don’t know if I can trust him.

I want to stay a virgin until I get married. I won’t drink until I’m 21, and I never intend to use drugs. But how do I say no if Jon asks me out and tries to have sex with me or gets me buzzed?

Even with inactive TB, treatment can stop future infection Dear Doctor K: My 6-year-old just had a positive reading on her Mantoux test. What does this mean?

Dear Reader: Doctors perform a Mantoux test to see if someone may have been exposed to bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB).

TB is a bacterial infection that typically infects the lungs. Fortunately, in most people exposed to the bacteria, TB never develops.

TB bacteria spread from person to person through the air.

The bacteria come out of someone’s mouth or nose when that person coughs or sneezes. When infection occurs, bacteria are inhaled into the deepest portion of the lung. There, the bacteria multiply. They also can spread to other parts of the body. (I’ve put an illustration on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

When the TB bacteria first enter a person’s lung, the immune system can usually keep them from multiplying, but it usually cannot destroy them completely.

As a result, the disease often remains inactive for life. People with inactive TB do not have any symptoms. And if the bacteria are not multiplying, and the person is not coughing, a person cannot spread the infection to others.

But it still can be important

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff to determine if someone has inactive TB. That’s because an inactive infection can slowly and quietly become active. The bacteria can start multiplying again, causing symptoms and often making the person contagious.

Treatment can eradicate the inactive infection, and thereby prevent a future active infection.

Testing for inactive TB is most important in people who are at high risk. That includes people who live with other people who have had active TB of the lung, and people who have been in casual contact with those who have highly contagious types of TB. Health workers often fall into the latter category.

The only way to tell if a person has been infected is with a Mantoux skin test. I assume the test was done on your daughter because the doctor believed she was at extra risk. Perhaps there was another child in her school who was found to have an active infection that could have been spread to other kids.

Here’s how the skin test

works: A small amount of protein taken from dead TB bacteria is placed just under the skin.

(It’s completely safe.) The site is checked two to three days later.

If TB bacteria have been in the person’s body before, there will be a slightly hard, sometimes red swelling. Whether or not it is “positive” depends on the amount of swelling. Once a Mantoux is positive, it tends to stays positive, even after treatment.

If your daughter’s Mantoux test is positive, it doesn’t necessarily mean she has active TB disease. It just means that the bacteria have entered her body.

Your daughter’s doctor will check her for any signs of TB. The next step is a chest X-ray to check for TB infection in the lungs. If there is any indication your daughter has an active infection, she will be treated with antibiotics.

Even if the checkup and X-ray are normal, your daughter’s doctor might still recommend medicine to eradicate the bacteria and prevent a future active infection.

Father’s addiction to alcohol destroying family Dr. Wallace: I’m 14 and have a father who has been in jail twice because he was arrested for drunk driving both times. He and I are close, but the last time he went to jail he missed my birthday.

My mom and I keep begging him to stop drinking, but he always says there’s nothing wrong with having a couple of beers with his pals.

We’re also worried that he will be hurt if he has an accident while driving after drinking.

When he got out of jail the last time, he promised us that he wouldn’t drink anymore. But that only lasted for a few weeks, and then he started drinking again.

I love both my parents very much, but it hurts me to watch my father destroy our family. What can I do to help my dad get a grip on his problem? – Frustrated, Mobile, Ala. Dear Frustrated: Your father is addicted to alcohol and won’t be able to overcome his drinking habit without help from someone outside the family. Let your goal be to get him to join Alcoholics Anonymous.

The phone number for your local AA can be found in the white pages of your telephone directory. You should also become a participant in Alateen. It is a section of Alcoholics Anonymous that helps teens cope with family and friends who are addicted to alcohol.

Dr. Wallace: Daniel and I had been together for about six months when a month ago he broke up with me because he wanted to date another girl.

He was a really nice guy and we had a lot of fun together, and my parents liked him, too. I

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace was really hurt when he broke up with me, but there wasn’t anything I could do but accept it.

Daniel called me last night and told me he had stopped dating the other girl because he realized he cared for me more than he did for her.

He said he was sorry for breaking up and asked me if I would go out with him again.

This really caught me by surprise.

I think I’d like to get back together with him, but my older sister thinks if I say yes right away, he will take me for granted and then break up whenever he wants to date someone new, and then expect me to go back with him again. Dear Confused: You don’t need my advice or your sister’s either.

You have things under control. Discuss the possibility of going out with him again.

No need to play games or make him feel any worse. Just express the full range of your feelings to him when you talk, and then gauge the sincerity of his response.

Then trust your own judgment.

Bridge deals are sometimes aesthetic, but the right answer to all of them can usually be found by applying reason. In today’s deal, what is the reasonable approach for South in four hearts after West leads the club queen?

North used a transfer bid followed by a jump to three no-trump to show the values for game with exactly five hearts and, probably, a balanced hand.

Here, South would have done best to pass, but it is hard to quibble with opting for the eightcard major-suit fit. (Note that the transfer did its job. Four hearts

by North goes down if East leads the spade queen.)

Taken in isolation, declarer would finesse in hearts. But here a heart finesse ought to be fatal.

East would win with his queen and should shift to the spade queen.

Not wanting a spade lead through his king, declarer should try to keep East off the lead. South wins the first trick and cashes dummy’s two top hearts. When the queen does not drop, he turns to the diamonds.

Yes, East ruffs the fourth round, but declarer has discarded one of dummy’s spades, so loses only one heart and two spades.

Note that if West has queenthird of hearts, South’s play costs only an overtrick. And if East can ruff the second or third diamond, declarer is still all right when East either does not switch to spades or holds the spade ace.

Always take the full deal into account.
