Where did you grow up? I was born in Wrexham, North Wales. I came here in 1946.

Do you have children? Two daughters Who would play you in the movie of your life? Lucille Ball First job? Taking care of children. Then the war started, and I went into the Royal Air Force. I was 20.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I don’t know what I wanted to be, but I became a wireless oper-

ator in the Royal Air Force, training bombers from 1941 to 1945. All these Canadians wanted to be in the bombers.

Annual Mooseheart Easter Egg Hunt set

He was an American from Merrillville, Indiana. The rest of the soldiers were shipped off to North Africa the next day, but not him. He had pneumonia and was in the hospital. I visited him, and he already bought a ring. We were married 62 years. He passed away in 2007, two years after we moved to Batavia.

Residents speak out against razing

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Before Geneva aldermen reversed the Historic Preservation Commission’s denial to allow Kane County to demolish the former Sixth Street School property, several residents objected to its demolition.

The county has a contract to sell the property to the Geneva Public Library for $1.5 million as a site for a new library, with the building’s demolition being part of the deal.

The former school, at 210 S. Sixth St., was built in 1924 and 1925. It now houses the Kane County Regional Office of Education.

Kane County Chairman Chris Lauzen detailed its problems – from rodents and bugs to mold, sagging ceilings, no hot water, leaky roof and asbestos.

Lauzen this week said it would cost $3.7 million just to bring the building up to code.

“It is like a car that has been totaled,” Lauzen said. “This building has served its purpose well, but now our focus is on the needs for the present and the future.”

Several residents spoke up in favor of preservation, including Glorianne Campbell, who said she went to school there from kindergarten to eighth grade.

“I walked through it,” Campbell said. “Nothing fell

on my head while I was walking. I didn’t go through the floor, either. And I didn’t smell anything. Nothing ran over my feet. I have strong feelings.

I support [the commission] and history of the community.”

Resident Chad Jerdee said he’d like to see the building go for a public use – regardless of whether it would be a library.

“Once it’s demolished, we lose a historic property that we’re never going to get back,” Jerdee said.

The Historic Preservation Commission denied the request for demolition because it did not meet the first standard of the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, which is to seek adaptive

uses before demolition.

Another resident, Jeff Goldman, said the historic district is what draws the public to Geneva. Goldman said he and his wife toured every historic property for sale, including the Patton House, which was built in 1857 and has been refurbished as a restaurant.

“Everything that you are saying is wrong with this building was wrong with the Patton House,” Goldman said.

“It smelled so bad in there. I got sick to my stomach, and I had to walk out.”

Since it opened, Goldman said he’s eaten there perhaps 10 times.

“It’s incredible,” Goldman said. “That can happen with

the Sixth Street building. We have to give it that opportunity, though. And if we rip it down, that’s never going to happen.”

Noting the building’s annual maintenance cost is $100,000 a year – reduced to $50,000 in anticipation of the sale – 2nd Ward Alderman Don Cummings said he could not recommend public investment in it.

“As a taxpayer, I cannot support this kind of gamble,” Cummings said.

The board ultimately voted, 8-1 with one absent, to reverse the Historic Preservation Commission’s action. First Ward Alderman Mike Bruno cast the lone dissenting vote and 1st Ward Alderman Charles Brown was absent.

Alderman hopefuls weigh in on demolition decision

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Four candidates, who are seeking seats on the Geneva City Council in the April 7 consolidated election, weighed in on the recent council decision to allow demolition of the former Sixth Street School in the city’s historic district.

Patrick Lenski and Tara Burghart, who are running for 1st Ward alderman, and James Radecki and Eleanor Hamilton, who are running in the 4th Ward, responded to a question of what they thought of the situation this week at a candidate forum.

The library district has a contract with Kane County to buy the Sixth Street School property as a site for a future library.

The contract requires that the building be razed.

Hamilton said she is married to Geneva Public Library Trustee Mark Adams.

“If I was on the City Council, I would have to recuse myself,” Hamilton said. “I am

certainly in favor of historic preservation in Geneva, and I find Geneva is a wonderful place because there are so many old buildings.”

Burghart said she and her husband chose to buy a 100-year-old house in Geneva because they were attracted to

the historic buildings in the city.

“Historic buildings in the city are the cornerstone of what makes Geneva such a beautiful place to live,” Burghart said. “These questions are so tough. They have to be taken one by one. It is un-

fortunate there was not a way to readapt that building ... for modern use.”

Lenski said he found it interesting to listen to the people’s passion for saving the building.

“I was disappointed in the outcome as well,” Lenski said.

“It was a real eye-opener for me,” Radecki said of the meeting when the decision was made. “The people in the room really swayed my opinion. ... I would have given them 90 to 120 days to find someone to preserve it and then come back to the City Council.”

Three seek two spots on ECC board

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Voters on April 7 will decide whether to re-elect two incumbents to the Elgin Community College Board of Trustees or to replace one incumbent with a new face.

Incumbents Donna Redmer and Bob Getz are facing challenger Jeff Meyer in the race for two six-year terms.

Meyer, 33, Jeff had unsuccessMeyer ful bids for the Kane County Board in 2012 and the 43rd Representative District in 2014. The problems he talked about and tried to address in the campaign last fall – such as property taxes and unfund-

The plan would require a rezoning of the property from community business to general residential. A city staff analysis indicated that the apartment complex is not consistent with the land use plan the St. Charles City Council adopted as part of its 2013 Comprehensive Plan.

Ward 1 Alderman Ron Silkaitis said he was not in favor of changing the comprehensive plan. Ward 3 Alderman Bill Turner agreed.

“I think what you presented here was actually pretty sterile,” Turner said. “We’ve got very little land left for the city.

I’m willing to wait for a commercial development.”

Kolb noted that the property has been vacant for 25 years and that the concept plan was revised based on feedback from residents. Resident Brian Berkelhamer disagreed with Kolb at the meeting.

Berkelhamer lives in the nearby Regency Estates subdivision. He said on Monday that almost no one was interested in having the apartment complex built.

“We would feel as though we were swindled for someone else’s property and some extra taxes for the city,” Berkelhamer said.

Representatives from the LLC said they were somewhat surprised by the comments and called the proposal an attractive alternative to its current non-usage.

“We’ll make our decision and get back to you,” Kolb said to the aldermen.

ST. CHARLES – A proposal for an apartment complex in St. Charles got a cold reception from aldermen on Monday.

The Woodward Court apartments project would require a rezoning on the city’s west side and deviation from the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

Attorney Andrew Kolb, on behalf on 1300 Spring Street LLC, presented the proposal Monday, along with a few other people working on the project, to the St. Charles aldermen, who were meeting as the Government Services Committee.

The proposal was not up for a vote, but it went before the aldermen so they could give their feedback on the project. The complex would consist of nine, three-story apartment buildings totaling 240 unites and a clubhouse across 13 acres along Woodward Drive east of Oak Street on the city’s west side.

Demolition of North Aurora Activity Center an issue in village board race

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The decision to demolish the village-owned North Aurora Activity Center is one of the issues in the race for the North Aurora Village Board.

Five candidates are running for three spots on the board. Incumbent trustees Laura Curtis and Mark Guethle are running for re-election, and Trustee Mark Carroll is running for election after being appointed to the board in May. Residents Anise Hesson and Alan Cavender also are in the race. Hesson, a member of the North Aurora Mothers Club, criticized the board’s decision to tear down the village-owned North Aurora Activity Center.

“I would have liked to have seen alternatives to tearing it down,” Hesson said. “I know that they said it was very costly to repair it, but I just feel like for the amount of money that was spent tearing it down, possibly some repairs could have

She said the building’s demolition was an example of how residents don’t feel like they are part of the decision-making process.

Trustees voted in December to approve a $355,739 contract with Site Recovery Services Inc .to demolish the building at 1 N. Lincolnway. The North Aurora Activity Center had been

closed since March last year because of structural damage.

Trustees in May decided the building was not worth saving.

Guethle, who served on the board from 2003 to 2005 and again from 2009 to the present, said the board’s decision to demolish the Activity Center was the right one. He said the land where the center was located will be developed.

“That particular corner is going to be a revenue-producing corner for us,” he said. “It will spark our revitalization plan for Route 31. So there is a lot of good with the removal of a building that we couldn’t use anymore.”

Curtis, who first was elected to the board in 2011, said she wants to continue the momentum that the board has developed over the past four years.

“I’m the chair of the finance committee, and I’m proud to say that in 2014, Standard and Poor’s just upgraded our bond rating from ‘AA’ to ‘AA+,’ ” Curtis said. “I think because of our strong fiscal position, it’s

very inviting for development.

Companies take a look at the business climate, and they realize North Aurora has done a lot to kind of change the perception that we were difficult to work with.”

Carroll said he would like to see a new community center in the village, but not necessarily at the site of the former center.

He said that wouldn’t be the best use of the land, adding that the land should be developed for commercial or retail use, and possibly apartments.

“Staff has been directed to try and find some land for a new community center,” he said. “It would have cost the village quite a bit of money just to get the Activity Center back to the bare minimum code.”

Cavender, who ran for North Aurora village trustee in 2013, could not be reached for comment. However, in a questionnaire for the Kane County Chronicle, Cavender said he wants to be an official “looking out for my neighbors’ interests first.”

A third trustee candidate, Steven Galloway, is on the ballot.

Mayer told deputies he had pulled into the parking lot, but instead of applying the brakes to stop, he hit the gas, which caused the crash, according to the statement.

Mayer was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said. It does not appear drugs or alcohol played a role in this crash, police said.

The Big Rock Café will be closed because of the damage caused by the crash.

BIG ROCK – Two employees of the Big Rock Café were injured Thursday when a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck crashed through front wall of the building about 1 p.m., police said.

The eatery is at 103 W. Galena St., Big Rock.

The truck partially entered the kitchen area before it

stopped, injuring two employees in the kitchen, Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said in a news release. Three customers inside the restaurant were uninjured, according to the release.

The driver, Richard Mayer, 71, of Somonauk, and one employee were taken to an Aurora hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. The second injured employee was treated at the scene, police said.

“What theater?” you’re asking, as the western burbs, from Aurora to Elgin, count a myriad of choices, from big-ticket extravaganzas to intimate small-town stages.

Our venue happened to be St. Charles’s Vero Voce Theatre and a production of eight one-act plays by relatively local – and new – playwrights.

They did not disappoint; the actors, directors and writers created hilarious and moving 15-minute scenarios, each leaving us as exhilarated as when closing a good novel.

More than 10 years ago, Dawn Harkins conceived Vero Voce in her home while

teaching piano and voice. Her husband, Dennis Brown, and she then turned a facility on St. Charles’s near east side into a reception area and performing space, today offering plays for all ages and a school of performing arts.

Dennis, a cross between Ricky Gervais and Kenneth Branaugh, greeted us at the door. Encouraging audience response, he coaxed, “You can laugh – or cry.” We did both.

OBITUARIES JUANITA AIRHART Born: March 17, 1933 Died: March 22, 2015 Juanita Airhart, 82, passed peacefully on March 22nd surrounded by her family.

She was born on March 17, 1933, in Oneonta, Alabama and graduated from Blount County High School in 1951. Shortly after graduation she moved to Illinois. Early in 1954 Juanita met the love of her life, Chuck Airhart, at the roller rink in South Elgin. They were married on Christmas Eve, 1954, and lived in South Elgin and Elgin for many years.

For many years Juanita was a member of South Elgin Community United Methodist Church. In 1999 Juanita moved to St. Charles. Juanita was a hard-working mother who started work at an early age and worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Sears in Aurora and Elgin, Bunge’s, Norton and Hines, N&H Electronics, and Reeve Cadillac in Elgin. She retired after working at Senior Services in Elgin for 15 years.

Juanita loved to cook and bake for her family and friends and they LOVED to eat everything she prepared! She was also a voracious reader of mystery novels, reading almost a book every day. When she wasn’t reading or cooking she enjoyed watching The Animal Planet and following the weather around the world on The Weather Channel. She was a beloved “momma” to her grandchildren and “great momma” to her great-grandchildren.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – After waiting 364 days, the St. Charles East boys water polo team had to play an extra six minutes Thursday night to show St. Charles North it was much improved from their 2014 showdown.

Junior Jack Sweeney scored with 2:14 left in the second overtime to give the Saints a 7-6 win over the North Stars in the match played at East.

The Saints capitalized on a North Stars foul, which gave them a man advantage for 20 seconds.

“We got a man up. My guys knew what they were doing.

We got the kickout and they were in position,” second-year Saints coach Tim O’Grady

Last year, on the Tuesday before spring break, the North Stars overwhelmed the Saints,

“I knew definitely that today was not going to be the same game as last year and I knew that we could win, we just had to play hard,” O’Grady said. “Last year was

a transition year for us. I was new to the program and I needed to mold them into my style of coaching.”

Said East’s Andrew Roberge: “It definitely was one of our best games of the year.

We had a good game tonight.

We came out tonight competitive.”

A junior, Roberge scored four of the Saints’ goals to help spark East’s turnaround.

“Each year is a little different. Last year doesn’t predict this year on either side,” North coach Chris Cloy said.

After being tied at 2 at halftime, the Saints (6-3) scored three third-quarter goals to the North Stars’ one, taking a 5-3 lead at the start of the final quarter.

East extended its lead to 6-3 about 1:30 into the fourth quarter on Roberge’s last goal

of the match.

North (7-4) mounted a rally, scoring the next three goals, two by Johnathan Pretet and one by Jonathan Gallee.

Pretet’s second goal, with 2:21 left to play, tied the score at 6.

“In the fourth quarter, we found the back of the net a couple of times,” Cloy said. “But we didn’t find it enough.”

“We capitalized on ball movement in the fourth quarter and setting it into one and six,” said North’s Chris Stanek, who had three goals.

“We had a couple goals that way.”

Roberge scored late in the first quarter to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

North took a brief 2-1 lead on back-to-back scores by Stanek. East’s Dustin Differding (two goals) tied the game with 1:04 before the half.

Cougars, D’backs unite in ‘common chords’ off field

ougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich immersed himself in investment acronyms before taking an increased stake in baseball.

Six months ago this week, he encountered a new term. Thanks in part to TLR, the Cougars and Arizona Diamondbacks are on course for what both sides foresee as a harmonious, long-standing relationship.

TLR overlaps in the baseball world, too. It stands for Tony La Russa, the Hall of Fame manager now serving as the D’backs chief baseball officer.

In late September, with the Cougars pondering a new Class-A player development contract with either the D’backs or a former partner, the Oakland A’s, La Russa called Froehlich.

His message: You can’t go wrong with either club.

Of Arizona’s five primary minor league affiliates apart from the Cougars – Triple-A Reno (Nevada), Double-A Mobile (Alabama), Advanced-A Visalia (California), Short-A Hillsboro (Oregon) and Rookie League Missoula (Montana) – three have remained aligned with the D’backs for at least 14 seasons.

South Bend, the D’backs’ former Class-A farmhand, partnered with Arizona from its 1998 inception before owner Andrew Berlin courted the nearby Cubs.

The Reno Aces, formerly headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, have stayed with the D’backs through a franchise relocation. Ditto for Hillsboro, which came from Yakima, Washington, before the 2013 season.

Bell and Gebhard, among others, traveled to Oregon to help oversee a smooth transition while taking care not to meddle.

“It would have been very easy for them to jump all over us and say, ‘You need to fix this; you need to fix this,’ ” said Hillsboro general manager K.L. Wombacher, who also moved from Yakima. “But they were very understanding in seeing where we were coming from … and helping us focus our energies on where we could make the most impact.”

So it goes for the Cougars, who announced offseason capital improvements – including a new video board, premium seating, batting cage and weight room – before aligning with the

D’backs.

Hall, Arizona’s president since September 2006 and its CEO since January 2009, operates under his “Circle of Success” model that accentuates fan experience, performance, community, culture and financial efficiency.

Told of the Cougars’ recent interior redecorating, he offered laughing approval. Then Hall confirmed it was unexpected, and that he similarly would not mandate the “Circle of Success” be painted on any vacant front office wall.

“Naturally, we love the affiliate to run business as they wish, and we’re a very important extension of that,” Hall said. “Just as they’re an extension of us.”

In the offseason, the D’backs have supported Hall’s claim several times.

Club brass assisted in clearing the (sedona) red tape surrounding Froehlich’s pursuit of a game day program print ad illustrating the stops in Arizona’s minor league organization. It’s now set to appear in programs throughout the system, including at games at Arizona’s Chase Field.

Fifth Third Bank Ballpark and Chase Field also will serve the newly-created Raging Cougar Ale, another Froehlich brainchild he helped develop alongside Warrenville-based Two Brothers Brewing Company. Froehlich first hatched the concept when he joined the Cougars with wife, Cheryl, as minority owners in early 2013, but stressed the D’backs’ collaboration got it, well, hopping.

“Derrick Hall has a vision as a CEO that says find a way to say yes.

It’s not a slogan; it’s the way they do things every day,” Froehlich said. “If you’re going to really find a way to say yes, you’re going to have to get other people involved in your organization, and that’s the thing that I’ve been most impressed with.

“Sometimes, if you can’t figure out how to get something done, you just say, ‘Look, I can’t get this done.’ And that’s not the Diamondback way. It’s like, ‘Well, if this is going to work, we’re going to have to get this person, that person, this person,’ and they take it as a challenge to try to figure out how we can make that happen.”

Naturally, that mindset triggers a trickle-down effect.

Recently basking in unseasonable warmth while walking along the ballpark concourse, Cougars clubhouse manager Scotty Anderson beamed about this weekend’s trip to Arizona’s spring training facility. D’backs officials initiated and planned the itinerary.

As you might expect, the D’backs want Anderson to do plenty of mingling during his visit to the desert, getting to know the players he might work with this season and the organization, too.

“They set everything up. They set up my flight and everything else,” Anderson said. “My shuttle when I get there. I’m just obeying orders. Which isn’t a bad order to follow, though.”

The Cougars led the 16-team Midwest League with a 2.85 ERA in 2014, but that still didn’t stop the Arizona Diamondbacks from presenting the club with a pitch book at season’s end.

Actually, the literature D’backs president and CEO Derrick Hall sent via club officials Mike Bell and Bob Gebhard on a September visit to Geneva had nothing to do with fastballs or sliders.

In a twist on the time-honored mound mantra, the message equated simply to “Trust our stuff.” D’backs brass hopes the gesture was a one-time affair.

“Hopefully, we will maintain these relationships and affiliates that we don’t need to pitch anybody,” Hall said.

“That would be ideal.”

Hall and Gebhard – Arizona’s farm director and special assistant to the general manager, respectively – offered Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich and general manager Curtis Haug a look at the organization’s philosophy through words, photos and graphics.

Consider the pitch book presentation the most formal piece of protocol when the sides met six months ago.

“It was more just kind of hanging out, enjoying ourselves talking about baseball. The different things our organizations like and believe in,” Bell said. “It just turned into a real nice day.

“Leaving there, it felt like the right place, and it certainly was hopeful that Dr. Bob and Curtis felt that way, and it turns out they did.”

Froehlich said it wasn’t so much about the book’s size – about 20 pages – as it was Arizona’s time investment.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – An eight-game, midseason winning streak highlighted the 2014 Geneva softball experience.

It also offered a peak into the season at large.

The Vikings’ victories in that span included two by scores of 9-8, one by 6-5 and just one win that triggered the run rule.

Eight starters and 10 total returners enjoyed an offseason away from such cardiac results, and would ultimately like to maintain their distance this spring.

“We’re very optimistic,” coach Greg Dierks said. “We’re trying to set the bar high for ourselves and challenge ourselves to maybe do some things that other teams maybe haven’t been able to do here before.”

For Dierks, who’s entering his 26th season, a regional title has proven most elusive in recent springs.

Last season, Geneva won 21 games and finished third behind St. Charles East and St. Charles North in the Upstate Eight Conference River standings, but its run in the Class 4A postseason lasted just one game.

Still, there was plenty to like about the Vikings’ progress, a trend that con-

That could be an especially daunting proposition for opponents considering four freshmen – catcher Kaitlyn Plocinski, right fielder Rylie Porretto, first baseman Annika Radabaugh and third baseman Molly Wrenn – batted at least .330 in 2014.

“We have a great opportunity to

compete this year with the team that we have,” said senior shortstop Anna Geary, a Miami of Ohio recruit. “We have a great group of girls, and I’m really excited to get out there and play.”

Junior pitchers Rachel Fanella and Emily Plocinski have shown strides, as well, and project as an effective duo with contrasting styles.

Where Fanella focuses on harnessing her breaking pitches, Plocinski

challenges hitters with speed. Plocinski spent much of the winter working on her off-speed stuff, but might just find her best attribute in her bloodline.

Having her younger sister behind the plate always has kept Plocinski mellow.

“I like to work with her. She really knows me, and she knows what pitch I want to throw when, and we really work together well,” she said.

“She’s really supportive of me. She knows when I’m getting down. If I get down, she’ll come up and she’ll tell me a joke or she’ll just mess around with me.

It’s a good relationship.”

If that sister duo will be instrumental in the Vikings’ bid to play – and win – more low-scoring games, another pair of siblings should have an imprint on keeping the offense churning.

Freshman Kate Geary, Anna’s sister, joined the team as a utility player with a skill for playing both infield and outfield positions.

“I know she was so nervous going into it, but it turned out like she wanted, so I’m happy for her,” Anna Geary said.

In time, the Vikings are confident Kate Geary and her fellow newcomers will absorb the intricacies of the team’s approach. They’re eager to keep the entire group around for a few games longer than last season.

SOFTBALL PLAYERS TO WATCH Gabi Alfaro Aurora Central Catholic, Sr., SS Longtime program stalwart batted .488 with nine home runs last season. Her defensive poise will be at an early-season premium as former second baseman Mary Wileman moves to catcher.

New coach Kyle Molik, a former multisport athlete at Elgin, grabs the program’s reins. He finds a handful of key incumbents in the mix, including junior pitcher/ outfielder Emily Kisch (nine wins, .357 batting average in 2014) and seniors Courtni Neubauer and Kassi Gaylord, who contributed 23 stolen bases and 27 RBIs last season, respectively.

Eight returning starters are back from last season’s 21-win team, and the lineup features a strong blend of power and speed. Junior pitchers Rachel Fanella and Emily Plocinski’s offseason strides also have Vikings coach Greg Dierks encouraged.

As usual, Dierks identifies St. Charles East and St. Charles North as the conference benchmarks to beat. Are the Vikings game for giving those teams a major run?

An experienced infield – including returners Paige Keufler (catcher), Morgan Weber (shortstop) and Meg Cohrs (third base) – and a young, athletic outfield have the Knights primed for a breakthrough after last year’s 20-win effort. “They all know what’s going on, and they’ll do what they have to do to step up,” said first-year coach Peter Goff, also the school’s athletic director. “When their name is called, they’re ready to go.”

Defending UEC River champion Saints graduated a few key pieces from their second successive 30-win team, but they also return several cogs.

Winona Statebound senior outfielder Katie Kolb joins classmates Olivia Cheathem and Alex Latoria in the team’s tested core. “This is St. Charles, so expectations are high,” Saints coach Kelly Horan said. “But we have to focus on the work right now before we can worry about how the end of the year turns out.”

North touts a disciplined defense and depth at each position, but will hope its pitching develops rapidly on the heels of longtime ace Sabrina Rabin’s graduation and transition to Northwestern. Coach Tom Poulin will look to sophomore Maddie Webbb, among others, to help the staff develop as the North Stars look to again challenge for UEC River and postseason hardware.

Offensive variety show sparks North

On Thursday, however, “Brutality Beneath the Surface” seldom applied.

Sure, North’s physicality produced a few goals in a 13-4 home rout of St. Charles East, but most of its attack came courtesy of precision passing and shooting.

“I thought our offense looked great today, better than it’s probably looked all season,” said North Stars senior Katie Quinn. “We’re doing a really good job at having multiple shooters and having multiple people that we can trust with the ball and get the ball to, and they can put the ball in the net. So just having that variety and diversity is great.”

North (9-2-1) surged to a 5-2 lead after one quarter and led 7-2 at halftime. The deficits might have been larger if not for the tenacity of East senior goalkeeper December Fagen.

A legacy in net – her brother, Nicholas, was a Saint and now plays for NCAA Division II Gannon – Fagen proved especially effective against point-blank attempts.

“I thought, personally, that I played my best, and I think

I made some good saves,” she said. “There were some hard shots to block. I’m proud of how I played.”

The North Stars boast the edge in the recent series, with last year’s 17-11 win at East still fresh on the minds of players from both sides.

East senior Alexandra Kos, the Saints’ lone goal-scorer, and the rest of the team hoped for a more steady start. The Saints fell to 1-2 in regular-season play. They also have competed in tournaments at Conant and Maine South.

“We needed to come out strong at the beginning to make ourselves known,” Kos said. “Looking at last year’s game, we were able to come out, but we weren’t able to finish. And I think this year was [the opposite].”

“We have had some hiccups, but the girls are playing well,” North Stars coach Nick Engel said. “They put in a lot of work in the offseason, and that’s really showing right now.”

Kaneland softball routs Dixon in five-inning victory KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE MAPLE PARK – It was unclear whether the Kaneland softball team was going to play Thursday’s nonconference softball game against Dixon because of the wet and cold conditions.

The game went on as scheduled despite the cold weather and the Knights came out hot, scoring all their runs in the first two innings of a 14-4, five-inning win.

“I thought we were doing really well. We didn’t stop,” Kaneland senior pitcher Anissa Becker said. “We just kept pressing it to them and I thought everyone was up and

emotional, and having a good time.”

About a week after Courtney Davis tossed a no-hitter, Becker threw a strong four innings and allowed three runs on three hits, while striking out five.

“We look at our depth of pitching,” Knights coach Peter Goff said. “Anissa did a good job and had some scoreless innings.”

After scoring three runs in the first inning, 15 Knights batted and 11 crossed the plate in the second. Rachel Urich and Morgan Sikon walked and singled to start the inning.

After Becker popped out, the next 12 batters reached base

for Kaneland (2-0).

Walks were an issue for Dixon (0-3), as eight Kaneland batters reached on free passes.

The only RBI hits for Kaneland came from Mary Lynn Clausen and Morgan Weber.

Mooseheart Military Ball glitters due to funding boost KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com This year’s Mooseheart Military Ball marks the first occasion that the mid-March event was fully-funded by Southern California-based Moose Legion 6, which plans to continue to provide funding for the event every year into the future, states news release.

The ball celebrates Mooseheart’s Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, a program in which all Mooseheart High School students must participate.

Legion 6 Secretary Ben Pendleton attended the Military Ball with past International Moose Legion President Mark Klein to show their support of the program “We saw it on the Mooseheart ‘wish list,’” Pendleton said in a release. “Most of our members are big supporters of this program.

If they’re not ex-military members, they support the military. We had to make sure that we funded this, and then to make sure that we’d be doing it year after year.”

During the event, Moose Legion 6 was recognized by Mooseheart’s students for its support.

Mooseheart lead NJROTC instructor U.S. Navy Warrant Officer (Ret.) Rick Smith said: “We have solicited funds for this event and the Navy League has taken care of us several times. Out of nowhere, this Moose Legion came through. They talked to us about paying for this event, and it’s really great that we don’t have to worry about where the funds are going to come from.”

The Military Ball has a history in the armed forces and at Mooseheart.

In the release, Smith said its origins are for military personnel, who have an evening to forget the dangers of their job and to enjoy time socializing.

“It’s one time during the year that you don’t think of the time you’ve been fighting,” Smith said in the release. “You’re together with your brothers- and sisters-in-arms and you get to enjoy each other’s company. You know what you’ve been through.”

At Mooseheart, the students experience the program through classroom studies and drill team or color-guard activities.

The Military Ball commands a special place in the calendar, said Smith in the release.

“With all the time they have in [the program] and the time they put into being ready for inspections early in morning before school, we want them to celebrate,” Smith said in the release. “But we also want them to realize we wouldn’t be having any of this without the veterans and the sacrifices they have made. Our students have to know that’s important, too.”

Founded in 1913, Mooseheart is supported completely through private donations – the great majority of which come from the one million men and women of the Moose fraternal organization throughout the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Bermuda, the release states. Moose International headquarters is located on the Mooseheart campus. Mooseheart is currently home to approximately 200 students, from preschool to high school seniors.

GENEVA – The Geneva-based nonprofit Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation hosted the “Celebrate Children” fundraiser March 15 at Villa Verone in Geneva.

The organization’s two major programs are the International Child Development Program, which is internationally recognized by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, and the Integrative Youth Development Program, which measures and identifies ways to help those ages 12 to 24 succeed within families, schools and communities, according to a news release.

Villa Verone owner Pietro Verone has hosted the “Celebrate Children” event at his restaurant for the past two years and also has contributed to the causes of the organization through the donation of dinner, states the release. Ve-

rone was honored by the nonprofit organization as one of the first four recipients of its new annual CCWF Champions of Empathy Award.

Other awardees include Gerry Dempsey, who accepted the award on behalf of Batavia Enterprises; Jeffery Hartman of the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley; and Gwen Brewer, who accepted the award on behalf of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Corporation.

Mayor Kevin Burns was the guest emcee at the event, and board members Pat and Bob Engel presented the organization with a $1,000 check from the Tri-Cities Exchange Club.

Honored guests included The Rev. Alvin and Di Ann Stewart of Chicago-based St. Titus One Missionary Baptist Church – home of one of the organization’s family programs.

A total of 257 children’s books were donated by guests who attended the event.

Geneva resident Haley Carroll, a student at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, has been awarded a Cultural Vistas Fellowship to undertake a fully-funded internship in India this summer, according to a news release.

She is the daughter of James and Jo Ellen Carroll of Geneva.

Carroll, a sophomore in Ball State’s Honors College, is majoring in public relations, with a minor in energy.

She is one of only 12 U.S. students nationwide selected to participate in this year’s Cultural Vistas Fellowship program, which affords undergraduates the opportunity to advance their career goals, develop global competencies and experience life in Argentina, Germany and India through two-month internships, states the release.

While in India, Carroll will intern with a renewable e n e r g y business or agency.

“I want to better u n d e r Haley Carroll stand how renewable energy impacts and is applied to communities, as well as how public policy and communication affect the success or failure of the sustainability revolution,” Carroll said in the release.

Carroll applied to intern in India, in particular, “because the country is currently at a tipping point when it comes to the future of energy sources and consumption,” she said in the release.

ADVICE The time has come to end sisters’ four-year silence Dear Abby: I have been estranged from my sister for four years. She lives across the country, so it hasn’t been difficult to hold a grudge. Either because I’m turning 50 this year, or maybe it’s old-fashioned guilt, I have been feeling the right thing to do is to make amends.

My question is – how? Should I write a letter, send an email or call her? To be honest, if she made those efforts to me, I would rebuff them. Parents should take their child’s eczema seriously Dear Doctor K: I took my son to the doctor because he was constantly scratching his legs. The doctor says it’s eczema. Is that just a fancy word for dry skin?

Dear Reader: Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is more than dry skin. It is an allergic skin condition that can make a child miserable. Treatment can usually help control the condition and ease its symptoms.

Eczema can look different in different children. It can be bumpy or scaly, with small or big patches. The amount of redness also varies. Dry, scaling skin usually occurs along with it.

Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report with the most up-to-date information and advice about eczema. They said that it is especially important to treat eczema in young children. They made some recommendations for treatment and for preventing possible complications such as skin infections.

• Take good care of the skin.

Children with eczema should not bathe too often because this dries out the skin. Ask your son’s doctor how often he should bathe.

However often, the baths should be short and lukewarm, not hot.

The most important maintenance, though, is using an ointment-type moisturizer all over the body at least once a day. Twice or more each day is even better.

In my experience, some parents don’t really take this advice seriously.

I’m not a pediatrician, but sometimes my patients ask for advice about their kids’ health problems. I recall once telling a patient to cover her daughter with moisturizer at least once a day.

The patient replied, “My daughter doesn’t need to look like a movie star!” I explained that the goal was to keep her daughter from itching, and having other kids make fun of her rash.

• Use creams and ointments to stop the inflammation. Moisturizers may not be enough. Your child’s doctor may prescribe a cream or ointment containing a mild- or medium-strength steroid to apply to the skin. Steroids are very effective, but it’s also import-

ant not to overuse them. That can lead to thinning of the skin and other side effects.

• Control the itch. When kids scratch, it makes eczema worse.

Moisturizing sometimes helps.

Medicines can make a difference, too. Your doctor can help you choose the best medicine for your child. These may include stronger steroids or antihistamines.

• Prevent and treat any skin infections. Skin infections are common in people with eczema, and they, too, can make things worse. It’s important to call the doctor anytime the redness of eczema increases, or you see new crusting or drainage. That may be a sign of infection. Diluted bleach baths (putting a little bit of bleach in a big tub of water) a couple of times a week can help kill germs and keep the skin healthier.

It’s easy for parents not to take eczema seriously. Don’t be one of them. Kids can be traumatized by eczema if it’s not properly diagnosed and treated.

I’m talking about the alcohol people drink. – David, Oakland, California Dear David: There are many different kinds of alcohol, but the kind that is made to be consumed is called ethyl alcohol and is the result of the decay of a fruit, grain or vegetable.

In North America and Europe, wine is made from grapes and other fruits. In the Caribbean, rum is made from sugar cane. Vodka in Russia comes from potatoes. Asians make sake from rice. Whiskey and beer are made from grains.

Originally, alcohol was drunk for warmth, but, unfortunately, it has evolved into a highly addictive drug that destroys lives.

Sometimes one does have to guess.

Take today’s deal for example.

South is in four spades. West leads the heart ace and continues with the heart king. What should South do?

After West opened one heart, East knew that he and his partner had a combined holding of at least 10 trumps. Applying the main conclusion from the Law of Total Tricks, he jumped to four hearts.

Under pressure, South overcalled four spades, hoping for some support in the dummy.

In four spades, with this layout, if South ruffs the second heart, he can be defeated by careful defense.

Declarer will start to draw trumps, but when he sees the 4-1 break, he will be forced to switch to clubs.

(If South draws all of the trumps, East-West will run their hearts when in with the club ace.) But when declarer does lead clubs, West ducks the first round and notes his partner’s nine, the start of a high-low with a doubleton. West takes the second club and gives his partner a club ruff. Then, in the fullness of time, the defenders collect a diamond trick for down one.

Instead, South mustn’t ruff the second heart – he must discard his unavoidable diamond loser. Then the deal is under control, and the contract makes. It is a textbook loser-on-loser play.
