The fight against ‘the R-word’ Marklund invites visitors, employees to sign names to the cause

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Margo Cherrie smiled as she stood in front of a placard on a table Wednesday afternoon at Marklund; meanwhile, employees and visitors took turns signing their names to be part of the campaign to “Spread the Word to End the Word.”

The word is, as literature available at the event pointed out, “the R-word,” a derogatory term that once was considered more acceptable as a way to describe those with disabilities.

Marklund is a nonprofit organization that serves those with serious and profound developmental disabilities and special health care needs, and Cherrie, a case manager and a qualified intellectual developmental professional, invited anyone who came into the lobby to sign their name to the cause to fight the casual use of the term.

“They are signing their name to signify that they are ending ‘the R-word,’” she said, adding that she has been a big supporter of that cause since her college days at Lewis University.

Cherrie smiled as employees Shannon Gardner and Cole Paler signed their names. She said visitors also had been signing.

Gil Fonger, Marklund’s president and CEO, said the word still is used by some people who might not realize they are offending anyone.

Library to host AARP Smart Driver program ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library will host an AARP Smart Driver program from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 15 and April 17 in the Huntley Meeting Room of the library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles.

AARP Smart Driver is the nation’s first and largest driver safety course designed especially for drivers age 50 and above.

This recently-redesigned course covers defensive driving techniques and provides tips for adjusting to the nor-

mal changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time associated with aging.

Advanced registration is required.

Participants must attend both days.

A fee of $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers includes a guidebook.

Judge to rule today on petition for petting zoo animal care funds

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A Kane County associate judge plans today to issue a ruling on a $43,000-plus security fund petition for the care and feeding of animals seized from a petting zoo.

After more than two hours of testimony and rebuttals from the defense and Kane County prosecutors, Associate Judge Elizabeth Flood on Wednesday Stacy said she need- Fiebelkorn ed more time to make her decision. Flood noted that she received the defendant’s response to the petition for security shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, the time the hearing on the issue was scheduled to begin at the Kane County Branch Court.

“Because of the amount of information presented ... I do want to look at this overnight,” Flood said.

Kane County Animal Control and prosecutors are seeking a $43,327.01 security fund

to be posted for the care and feeding of animals impounded from The Mini Crew Zoo in Hampshire Township.

Zoo owner Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin faces misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and violating an animal owner’s duty to provide food and care.

Fiebelkorn was in court Wednesday, sitting next to her attorney, Jamie Wombacher.

In response to the petition, Wombacher proposed funding totaling $9,000, including veterinary costs, boarding for the animals and fees.

Prosecutors on Wednesday revised their security fund request down from $45,000 after removing some costs related to goats. Flood ruled toward the beginning of the hearing that goats were excluded from the petition because they did not fit under the statutory definition of a companion animal, or pet.

“I think [the definition] does somewhat constrain the court,” Flood said.

Wombacher and prosecutors each questioned Robert Sauceda, Kane County interim animal control administrator, about the care the animals under the petition were receiving

at three different sites.

Multiple sites were used because there was not enough room at any one place to house all the animals, Sauceda said.

The next hearing on the petition is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at the Kane County Branch Court.

Local Republican leaders: Budget address lacks details

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com Doug Whitley chuckled when asked for a reaction to Gov. Pat Quinn’s budget address, which was delivered Wednesday.

Whitley, the president and CEO of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and a Batavia resident, said there were laudable items in Quinn’s address. But Whitley added that the presentation didn’t really resemble its label.

“The humorous part on that is, what budget?” Whitley said. “I didn’t think it was a budget address. It was a political address. … It was really short on any type of details.”

There was some support for Quinn’s address, in which he proposed keeping an income-tax increase that will expire at the end of the year, in the name of avoiding cuts to education.

He also proposed providing every homeowner in Illinois with a guaranteed $500 property tax refund.

Local Republican state officials criticized the Democratic governor’s address, as did his opponent in the November election, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner. Whitley said Quinn touched on themes that would be “appealing to voters,” such as education, property tax relief and pension reform. But as far as the $500 refund, Whitley said “it’s easy for a politician to talk about sending people checks. … The other side of it is not taking the money in the first place.”

In a statement, Rauner said Quinn was breaking a promise by keeping the income-tax increase, a 67 percent increase that was approved in 2011. Rauner said Quinn promised the tax would be temporary, and “he broke that promise.”

outrageously high unemployment, massive cuts in education, and there’s still a giant budget mess in Springfield,” Rauner said. “It’s now or never to save Illinois.”

State Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, said she was disappointed but not surprised with the address, saying Quinn chose campaign themes over workable plans to create jobs and heal the economy.

“Today, the governor proposed more election-year spending and more taxes, neither of which we can afford,” Hatcher said in a statement.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, asked why Quinn wants “to make the 2011 ‘temporary’ income tax hike permanent? Most of us would be a little more willing to put up with higher taxes if we believed those dollars were spent efficiently.” Instead, he said, there has been waste, and he asks, “where is that money?”

GENEVA – Who would have thought there would be any tree houses in Geneva – that is, houses on pylons up in the trees – let alone three in a row and two for sale?

Yet, that was just the case at 201, 205 and 211 Oakwood Drive in the city. The latter two are for sale with contracts pending, said Joyce Courtney of HomeCourt Real Estate, who listed the tree house at 205 Oakwood.

“It’s very unusual, especially for our area, which is relatively flat,” Courtney said.

“It’s a very unusual situation because of the contour of the land. You look out the back and see this hill of trees, and you just don’t realize you are in Geneva.”

Christie Allen Mortimer, who owns the tree house at

“We both love tree houses and were overwhelmed by the idea of living in one full time,” Mortimer said.

They spent four years fixing it up, but are in the process of selling it for a larger house, Mortimer said.

The house originally was built in 1976 for Ralph and Lucille Little, who still live in Geneva.

“We loved it there,” Lucille Little said. “It was a fun house.”

Little said people thought the lot was unbuildable, but then she found a book called “Hippie Houses” and got the idea to have it built.

“It was a great fun house and we loved having the woods all around it,” Little said. “But as we got older – it was three stories – we thought we better start looking for senior housing.”

The St. Charles Tree Commission is organizing the 2014 Tribute to Trees as part of the city’s annual Arbor Day celebration, according to a news release.

This year’s celebration will be at 4 p.m. April 25 in Lincoln Park, 450 W. Main St., west of Route 31.

Participants in the Tribute to Trees can use any medium – photography, sculpture, watercolor, music, dance, computer or pencil and paper – to express their appreciation of trees.

Entries will be displayed or performed at the Arbor Day Celebration.

April 4 is the last day to turn in entries.

Each participant in the tribute will receive a prize, and all ages are welcome.

Jeffers said the Kane County Health Department collaborates with its county and community partners about various health-related issues, such as those highlighted in the rankings report.

“What can we do as a community to address these problems?” she asked.

Of the judged categories, Kane County ranked its best – fifth – in health behaviors, which included adult smoking, adult obesity, physical inactivity, access to exercise opportunities, excessive drinking, sexually transmitted infections and teen births.

At 89th place, Kane’s lowest ranked category was for physical environment, which considered air pollution, driving alone to work and having a commute longer than 30 minutes, among other factors.

Jeffers said she plans to make a presentation about Kane County’s health ranking at the next Public Health Committee meeting.

To the county’s health department executive director, that’s pretty good.

“I think it’s awesome,” Barb Jeffers said. “This goes to show you the community that we live in and the wealth of factors that measure up to a good community.”

Of 102 Illinois counties, Kane County ranked ninth in the fifth annual County Health Rankings, which were released Wednesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Other counties in the top 10 included Kendall (No. 2), DuPage (No. 3) and DeKalb (No. 10).

Kane previously ranked 12th in 2013, eighth in 2012, ninth in 2011 and 11th in 2010.

However, past rankings shouldn’t be used to judge Kane’s progress since the factors on which the rankings are based change, Jeffers said.

This year’s new measures included housing, transportation and access to mental health providers.

Such measures fell under the broader categories of lifespan, quality of life, health behaviors, clinical care, physical environment and social and economic factors.

“The County Health Rankings show us how health is influenced by our everyday surroundings – where we live, learn, work and play,” County Health Rankings Director Bridget Catlin said in a written statement.

“It’s just there to protect us,” Onzick said, noting $1 million of the 2013 surplus would be funneled into that account.

Additionally, he said, $2 million would be channeled into an emergency reserve fund. He said those funds would be used during severe economic events, such as the Great Recession or to fund an emergency expenditure.

County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said it’s a matter of when – not if – Kane County will be affected by another recession.

“Is Kane County going to be prepared for it?” Lauzen asked.

The proposed funds received support Wednesday from the Finance/Budget Committee.

The committee also approved the creation of another fund that will be used to hire off-duty county police officers to monitor construction speed zones.

It will use fines from such speeding tickets as its revenue source.

Onzick said the remainder of the $9.7 million surplus would be allocated to three other accounts, including the capital fund.

GENEVA – A plan intended to help protect Kane County from future financial challenges has received initial support.

Finance Director Joe Onzick is asking the Kane County Board to use part of last year’s $9.7 million surplus to establish an emergency reserve fund and a property tax freeze protection fund that would only be used in certain circumstances.

He introduced the proposed funds during the Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday as part of a larger presentation about the fiveyear financial plan for 2014 to 2018.

The plan – which is a working document – shows that a $176,000 deficit is expected in 2017 and a $993,000 deficit is anticipated in 2018 if the nonpayroll expenses remain flat and the county doesn’t cut costs or enhance revenues.

Given the potential for a deficit, Onzick is proposing the creation of a property tax freeze protection fund. It would act as an insurance policy to ensure the county can fund operations through 2018 without increasing the prop-

He was born Sept. 13, 1925, in Wheaton, where he spent most of his early years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ada (Peterson) Johnson; his wife, Jeanne “Vicki” Madlyn Victor; his son, Robert Philip Johnson; his brothers, Herb, Paul, Rey, Gordon and Charles Johnson; and his sister, Harriet. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Ann Walsh Johnson; his two children, Gary V. Johnson (Amy Mercer) and Patricia Johnson (Steve) Lord; his five grandchil-

He was a real estate broker for over 50 years. He owned four real estate offices (Village Realty) in Villa Park, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn and St. Charles, as well as owning and operating a real estate school in St. Charles. He remained active in real estate even toward the end of his life.

Mr. Johnson was a past master of Masonic Lodge 1113 A.F. & A.M. in Villa Park, and a member of the Chicago Medinah Tem-

ple, admitted in 1972. He was president of the Villa Park Lions Club and also was active in the St. Charles Lions Club. He showed his love for others by volunteering his musical talents playing the banjo and mandolin with the Bunkhouse Boys, a country and western band he formed with some close friends. The band played for nonprofit organizations, fundraisers and political functions. But his favorite was playing for blind veterans at the Wheaton VFW Hall for decades.

There will be a celebration of Mr. Johnson’s life from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29, in Naples, Fla., at Berkshire Lakes Clubhouse, and from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in Wheaton at the Wheaton VFW. ‘Total disregard’ for safety cited in sentence for crash that killed boy

ST. CHARLES – Kane County Judge James Hallock wanted to send a message Wednesday that society will not tolerate those who get behind the wheel while impaired by drugs.

Hallock sentenced Benjamin Black, 29, of Sycamore, to 12 years in prison for driving with heroin in his system during the crash that killed 11-year-old Matthew Ranken of Sycamore. He had at least four prior convictions for driving on a suspended license, prosecutors said.

“The defendant has a prior criminal history,” Hallock said. “It shows a mindset of the defendant’s total disregard for this public’s safety.”

The ruling, which was delayed when Hallock said he needed more time to review all the evidence, was more serious than the eight years defense attorney D.J. Tegeler requested. Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Cullen suggested a sentence at the upper end of the three-to-14-year range Black faced.

Members of the Ranken family were in tears after the ruling, and stone-faced members of the Black family hurried out of the courtroom.

Chris Weber, one of Matthew Ranken’s older brothers, said the sentence will give some closure for the whole family.

“All in all, I’m just glad my little brother can finally rest in peace,” Weber said.

Black pleaded guilty as part of an agreement Nov. 14 to two counts of aggravated driving under the influence.

Black was driving his SUV about 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27, 2013, near the intersection of Route 64 and Peplow Road in Kane County when he crashed into the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier, authorities said. The crash killed Ranken and severely injured 19-year-old Teale Noble, also of Sycamore; both were passengers in the Cavalier.

Samples of Black’s blood and urine taken after the crash tested positive for heroin metabolites and Alprazolam, a generic name for Xanax, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety disorders, authorities said. Black has admitted he is a heroin addict, Tegeler said.

Tegeler said he plans to ask Hallock to reconsider the sentence within the next 30 days because Hallock used the fact the crash caused serious physical harm twice against his client.

Since he will serve 85 percent of his sentence, Black is expected to be released from prison in a little more than 10 years. He will be required to serve two years of parole after he is released. “[Black] feels horrified his actions have caused a death,” Tegeler said outside court.

“He’s having trouble forgetting that it occurred and forgiving himself.”

At a sentencing hearing March 20, Black asked members of the Ranken family to accept his apology but said he didn’t expect them to forgive him.

Tonda Ranken, Matthew Ranken’s mother, said she thought Black’s apology was sincere but didn’t say whether she will ever forgive him.

“I do want to see him get some help and become a better person,” she said.

She said her family is glad the case is over for now so they can move on.

“Now it’s time to heal,” Tonda Ranken said. “I don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

Black still faces a theft charge in DeKalb County in which he is accused of stealing about $4,000 worth of brass and copper from a Cortland manufacturing business. He is next due in court for that charge April 2.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said any sentence Black receives in the theft case would be served at the same time as his 12-year prison term.

Second Street Dental now open

Police make 3 arrests during safety campaign ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department made three driving under the influence arrests during a five-day enforcement period that ended March 17, according to a news release issued Monday.

The safety campaign was done in cooperation with and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The enforcement efforts netted three citations for seat belt violations; eight citations for speeding; and five citations for other violations. Officers also issued 15 warnings.

The initiative was part of a statewide program to reduce the number of traffic fatalities.

A hair-y situation LIFE AT EAST Brigid Ackerman that my hair is definitely not the right texture for layers and bangs of any kind.

My worst hair drama came not from my hair itself, but the most infamous hair accessory – the pony tail holder. I was at the time in my life where I thought wearing many hair bows on my wrist would be “cool.” I was stacking three or four of them on at a time, feeling like a trendsetter. My best friend at the time had a different impression of me – criminal.

Apparently, in some convoluted way, she heard that wearing hair bows around the wrist was a sign that the person was in a gang. I was hurt, insulted and confused, because there are days that I need two or three to hold all my hair back.

Although I think my hair looked pretty good straight, it didn’t feel like mine. Many girls my age straighten their hair every day, but I know I don’t have to do it, too, to fit in.

I felt like I had gotten a lot chopped off, but it was really only an inch. It was fun to change up my look for a bit, but I wouldn’t want to make it a permanent thing. I like my hair just the way it naturally is!

U.S. Internet oversight should not be given up lightly BLOOMBERG NEWS A group of nerds and wonks is having some hideously boring meetings this week in Singapore. You should care – what they produce could change the nature of the Internet.

On March 14, the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration said it would relinquish oversight of ICANN, the nonprofit group that has managed the name-and-address system of the Internet since 1998. To simplify a bit, ICANN – the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers – is what ensures that you magically get connected to the site you want when you type in a Web address.

the Internet’s openness and stability with a hands-off and nonpolitical approach to overseeing ICANN. Now it plans to hand that oversight to an international conglomerate of “stakeholders.” In Singapore, ICANN’s members are discussing what that group should look like.

The United States has always said that it intended to internationalize ICANN’s oversight. But for the transfer to be a (forgive the pun) net positive – and not dangerously counterproductive – it matters how it is done.

Before the NTIA’s contract with ICANN ends next year, it should require a few things that could help smooth the transition. And the U.S. government shouldn’t hesitate to delay or even cancel the transfer if these conditions

aren’t met.

First, ICANN must affirm that its finances will remain an open book, subject to public audit each year. It should commit to maintaining a legal presence in any country in which it has contracts. Its technical functions should be strictly separated from its more politicized policy-making functions. And, most important, ICANN must explain how it intends to remain free of harmful political influence and keep its leadership accountable.

One of the great benefits of U.S. oversight of ICANN is that it just works – and has for almost two decades. That’s the central point the Web’s stakeholders should keep in mind as they exchange ideas and acronyms this week in Singapore.

A couple of weeks ago, I got my hair trimmed like I normally do a few times a year.

But that day, when my hairdresser was finishing up, I let her straighten my hair for the very first time. I decided to keep it straight for school the next day.

My head certainly looked different – my hair is naturally very thick and curly (read big and frizzy), and I’m not usually one to style it very much.

I was surprised that so many people were shocked by my new look. When my mom came back to pick me up from the salon, she said she didn’t even recognize me from behind. At school the next day, countless people commented on my hair. Many people asked me if I had straightened it, which I thought was a pretty obvious yes.

I’d never thought about it before, but I guess my hair is one of my defining features. On a good day, it can look as good as Farrah Fawcett’s hair, without the hassle of a perm.

On a bad day, I look like an outcast character from the Lion King.

When I wear a messy bun, I think I look a lot like Joakim Noah. I’ve tried a million and one products, but I’ve found that my hair has a mind of its own, so it’s best to let it be.

My hair hasn’t always had so much volume.

Throughout my childhood, I always had a short bob.

While that look accentuated my curls, it felt a little too boyish for my taste.

Around middle school I started growing it out.

It also brought along an awkward side bang phase, which is when I learned

The Kane County Bar Association will set out to prove that when the group presents “Shabby Road, Pols and Lies on the Campaign Trail (A Nukalar Extravagabanza)” on Saturday, April 12, at Elgin Community College’s Blizzard Theatre, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.

Tickets start at $40 and are available by calling the Elgin Community College Box Office at 847-622-0300. Tickets include a 6 p.m. reception, with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Kane County Bar Association last staged a production in 2008 to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to producer Dorothy Voigt about the show, which provides an insider’s look at the legal, judicial and legislative process and lampoons today’s politicians and celebrities. It will feature spoof appearances by Patty and Rob Blagojevich, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Justin Bieber and others.

Eric Schelkopf: How did the Kane County Bar Association come up with the show’s theme?

Dorothy Voigt: Illinois has had a pretty shabby road. We’ve sent three governors to jail, and Jesse Jackson Jr. also recently went to jail.

Some of the show is related to political stuff, and then there are a few things related to just lawyers, in general.

ES: Do you have a theater background?

DV: Not professionally in any particular way, but I did a bit of community theater in my 20s, and I’ve always sung in choirs and I still do. It’s been something that I’ve picked up over the years,

you know.

ES: How has the show been coming together?

DV: It’s coming together. It takes a while for all of this to jell, because we’re not working with professionals, although some of the people are very good.

And we all have full-time jobs, in addition to doing this for fun.

ES: So, what should people expect from the show?

DV: Hopefully it’s funny, and we’ve got quite a bit of music, so hopefully they will recognize most of that. It’s just intended to be a silly night out for fun.

We hope that a number of members of our bar association come out and support us, but it’s something that almost anyone would understand. MYSTERY DINER Restaurant reviews

Fiora’s casual sophistication satisfies lunch crowd iora’s, the alluring yellow mansion set back from Third Street in historic downtown Geneva, has been wooing diners with its European-influenced American cuisine for years.

Voted best restaurant in the Kane County Chronicle’s Best of the Fox readers’ choice contest for two years in a row (2012 and 2013), the charming eatery offers a fine-dining experience and extensive fine-wine list. The “fine-dining” concept has a tendency to scare off some diners, but Fiora’s space radiates casual elegance and exudes old-world charm. Dining at Fiora’s is like being invited into the beautiful home of a well-to-do friend. The staff is warm and welcoming, attentive and well-versed in the menu and its offerings.

For those wanting to try Fiora’s – but who may not have a robust-enough checking-account balance to splurge – visit the restaurant for lunch. The most expensive items on the lunch menu are the Nicoise Salad – salmon over mixed greens, tomatoes, green beans, kalamata olives, red potatoes and egg with a red wine vinaigrette – and the Maryland Crab Cakes – with remoulade and served with a citrus vinaigrette estate salad – for $13.95 each.

If day-drinking is an option, everything on the lunch menu comes with recommended wine and beer pairings to take the guess work out of ordering.

The restaurant is divided into an assemblage of rooms, including the black-and-whitechecker-floored Sun Room with floor-to-ceiling windows; the Chandelier Room, complete with fireplace; the fully-stocked Rustic Wine Cellar Room; the Library Wine Bar with shelves of old, leather-bound books; and the Private Dining Room.

Fiora’s also has a spacious, seasonal outdoor patio.

dation from our waitress – the Lincet Delice De Bourgogne ($5.95), one of five artisan cheese offerings.

The Bourgogne is a rich, triple-cream cheese that melted in our mouths. Over a crostini, I smeared a creamy layer of Bourgogne and added quince jam for a tinge of sweetness to balance the cheese’s aroma.

You can order a selection of three cheeses to sample for $15.95, which also comes with apricots, figs marinated in brandy, toasted pecans, crostini and quince jelly. Feel free to ask for more crostini if you run out – we did.

The rich, savory flavor of the Lobster Bisque left me wanting more. Our waitress separated the bisque into two portions since she knew we were sharing – a nice gesture, but she inadvertently foiled my plans of “accidentally” consuming more than my fairshare.

The Maryland Crab Cakes delivered on taste, but lacked in size. I expected them to be about the size of a hockey puck, but they were each more like the size of a doorknob.

The Waldorf Chicken Salad Sandwich ($10.95) – a popular menu item – was a mayonnaise-based melding of chopped chicken breast, Granny-Smith apples, red grapes, celery and onions between a croissant.

The buttery, flakiness of the croissant teamed nicely with the creamy, crunchy textures of the chicken salad. The sandwiches come with a choice of citrus vinaigrette estate salad, seasoned fries or house chips.

Another noteworthy sandwich was the Chef’s Burger, with smoky, steak seasoned Angus beef, Guinness aioli, Irish cheddar and beer-braised onions on a pretzel roll ($12.95).

Fiora’s food, atmosphere and hospitable staff make it a fine-dining establishment but without the stuffiness generally associated with the term.

Fiora’s is a place that you can come in and feel like home.

Expect Smith to savor every assist that he accounts for, be it to the 6-foot-8 Jendryk or any of the Spartans’ secondary weapons.

Unlike for Jendryk – a middle hitter who has committed to play collegiately at

Loyola, one of the country’s top men’s volleyball programs – this is the final goaround for Smith, who does not intend to play college volleyball.

Smith, a St. Charles resident, likely would have some college volleyball options if he pursued them. But he and his twin brother, Chris – a St. Francis baseball player – are leaning toward attending Butler together, and possibly rooming together. Both fraternal twins likely will leave

their competitive athletic days behind.

Smith said he enjoys switching to the setting role in high school play, even if it makes for a challenging transition.

“It’s definitely a little bit tough at the beginning but I like being able to change up sometimes,” Smith said. “I’m glad I have a chance to set. It’s a little bit different but I think it’s more fun. It’s nice to get the chance to play a couple different positions than to be stuck always in the same position.”

Spartans coach Mike Lynch said Jendryk has the ability to finish as the most dominating hitter ever to go through St. Francis’ program. With a trace of awe in his voice, he said Jendryk

can touch 11 foot, 8 inches, meaning he can soar about 3½ feet over the net when he fully explodes off the ground.

That ability to sky makes Jendryk a superb blocker. His versatility and shot-making repertoire also are on the

upswing, Lynch said.

“This year he will actually play back row and serve for us also, which is unusual for a big, 6-7, 6-8 kid, but he is becoming better as a passer every day,” Lynch said.

Jendryk is certainly not the only appealing option for Smith to set, with fellow seniors Greg Churney, Joe Denny and 6-4 middle hitter Daniel Zurawski – a promising newcomer who came over from the baseball program – also being counted on to inflict their share of damage.

But it’s a no-brainer that all eyes will be on Jendryk when the Spartans take the floor. It’s a safe bet he’ll remain in Smith’s field of vision, too.

“He gives us a little intimidation factor to the other team, keeps them on their toes,” Smith said. “It’s exciting to see what he can do this year.”

Naturally, the looming encounter has prompted thoughts of high school and home, things that haven’t exactly been foremost on Dorjath’s mind lately.

No slight to B-Town or Beloit – strong civilizations on bodies of water in their own right – but Dorjath is a recent resident of the Galapagos Islands. Her fall study abroad destination still resonates and helps provide a backdrop, if not backstop, to what she calls a “unique” group of Bucs.

“We’re a very eclectic, diverse community here, so we have a very quirky team,” Dorjath said. “It’s not your typical softball team or even athletes you would think of.”

Fellow Bucs aspire to be chemists, participate in the school’s drama program and give piano lessons. Beloit staged a production of the locally written “Coward Land” to open its fall theater season; the label hardly stuck on the campus after the final production.

Dorjath, a junior molecular, cellular and integrative biology major, weighed study abroad opportunities in making her college choice. She valued a school that would allow her to pursue academics and athletics at an equally vigorous pace.

A month in Ecuador and three months in the Galapagos Islands offered more diving in the Atlantic Ocean than for errant pitches, but Dorjath quickly immersed herself in softball upon returning home in December.

Starting behind the plate for the third straight season and again enjoying the role of captain, Dorjath is batting .250 with a home run and four RBIs in 11 games. She credits her on-field duties for assisting with off-field matters.

Beloit College catcher Emily Dorjath, a Batavia product, is in her third year starting behind the plate for the Bucs. She is batting .250 in the team’s first 11 games this season.

Dorjath is one of just four upperclassmen on the Bucs’ 18-player roster.

“I have always kind of had that leadership role or felt like I’ve had that leadership role, especially being a catcher,” Dorjath said. “You know

how to deal with different personality types and get the infield back focused. It’s just trying to show, especially those younger girls, how to play Beloit College softball and what that means and showing that both on and off

the field.”

Last season, Dorjath earned honors as the Midwest Conference North Division’s first-team all-conference catcher after leading Beloit in doubles, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. She

was second in home runs and RBIs. While she realizes almost half of her collegiate career remains ahead of her, Dorjath still has taken several steps toward her future. She spent the past two summers studying birds – including a 2012 stint observing condors in California – and will publish a paper with a professor this year.

She plans to apply for veterinary school this summer.

The magnitude of it all struck Dorjath even in the picturesque Galapagos Islands – where activities included diving and observing sharks – though a release through running was close at hand.

“How can you not?”

Dorjath said. “It’s a beautiful landscape. I’d pretty much run every day at sunset by the oceanside. Not just to stay in shape for the season, but also it was a nice getaway from everything else. Kind of escape and not worry about everything else that was going on.”

Softball keeps Dorjath on the travel circuit. Parents Dave and Nancie have increased their itineraries, too, now that Dorjath’s younger brother, Will, is a freshman baseball player at Ripon (Wis.), Beloit’s conference rival.

“I don’t blame him, going his different route. He probably doesn’t want to keep following in my footsteps,” Dorjath said.

Considering the points along her recent path and the ones Dorjath has envisioned for the future, she shouldn’t be so sure.

St. Francis tops Bartlett to open season KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE WHEATON – The St. Francis boys volleyball team defeated Bartlett, 25-13, 25-16, on Wednesday in the Spartans’ season-opening match.

Greg Churney (nine kills) and Jeff Jendryk (six kills, seven blocks) were the kills leaders in a Spartans offense stirred by senior setter Robert Smith (25 assists).

The Spartans will return to action April 7 in a road match at Geneva.

ST. CHARLES – Two thunderous Jack Bujko kills bookended a public address announcement warning against flash photography late in St. Charles North’s boys volleyball season opener Wednesday.

Pardon Bujko for providing such visual fodder. It’s just that he really felt things clicking with setter Jeff Rollins as a 25-19, 25-20 victory against Leyden unfolded, and the only reaction he knew was to pump his fist and shout.

“It’s just fireworks,” Bujko said.

“It’s one of the greatest feelings to hit the ball and just bounce it, you Jeff Rollins know. It feels really great.

It’s my favorite thing.”

North (10) aims to see similar outbursts as the s p r i n g p r o - Todd Weimer gresses, a challenging task given the makeup of its roster.

The North Stars graduated 12 seniors from last season’s third-place IHSA state tournament team, a group that fed off energetic coach Todd Weimer’s antics and accompanying Twitter hashtag, “TCOB.” “Taking care of business” is the extended version of that message, and has since produced another Weimer brainchild, #PutInWork.

“He fires us up,” North Stars senior right-side hitter Ben Connor said. “He teaches us where to be and how to do things, but he also gets us pumped up and ready to go, and he also makes practice and games fun.”

There was little doubt Weimer would hatch something given his penchant for such sayings. In the mean-

time, North knows the key to upholding this catchphrase hinges on another kind of repetition.

A team that loses its core can’t reasonably expect to enter a season with its best grasp on intangibles and fundamentals. In that sense, Weimer has relied on returning seniors and captains Nic Cook (libero/setter) and Bujko (middle hitter/right side) on the floor and in the huddle.

Rollins, another senior, played in spots during the 2013 postseason, as well.

“We’re a little sloppy right now,” Bujko said, “but I think we’ll definitely step it up.”

North and Leyden (0-2) traded sequences of errors and net violations, common sights for jittery March matches.

After North seized a 22-17 lead in Game 2, the Eagles climbed to within two points courtesy of three straight North Stars errors.

Momentum quickly vanished when the Eagles followed with a service error of their own.

When things were more fluid, North established an attack behind Rollins (15 assists), Bujko (five kills) and Connor (four kills). Cook and Rollins contributed 10 digs apiece. Leyden struggled to build a passing game due to illness at the libero spot.

Tyler DeMoss helped stabilize North in the second game.

A first-time volleyball player, the senior played with the basketball team in the winter, but already has impressed with his athleticism and energy.

As if North needs more of the latter.

“The guys, they want to continue the tradition and continue to work hard,” Weimer said. “Sure, we graduated a lot of talent, but that doesn’t matter. It’s a new season, a new year. It’s a new group of guys, OK. And nobody’s telling us that we can’t do it again.”

With the acquisition of Jared Allen, the Bears now have moved the needle on free agency as much or more than any team in the NFL, with the exception of the Denver Broncos, and have to be considered the co-favorites to win the NFC North.

Are they Super Bowl contenders? Let’s have a draft first.

The Bears could be one of the oldest defenses in the NFL, but in Allen, Jeremiah Ratliff, Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings, you now can say that half the starters on defense have been to multiple Pro Bowls. All but Briggs, along with Lamarr Houston, Ryan Mundy and Willie Young, were free agents. It almost is certain all seven of those free agents will be Week 1 starters.

Plug in D.J. Williams, who has at times played close to a Pro Bowl level when healthy, and you essentially have nine new starters – if you include Briggs – for the team that had such a disastrous second half of the 2013 season.

As they suggested they might at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, general manager Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman have rebuilt the Bears’ entire defense in one offseason – albeit with the return of a few injured stars – just as they did with the offense

Of course, the rub is all those Pro Bowlers – with the possible exception of Jennings and Williams – clearly are past their primes. So how much will they have left and can they stay healthy? Allen was the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle and now it definitely is worth a shot to find out. It won’t be a dominant defense, but now it should be good enough.

I have written and said since they signed him that Houston might be the best three-technique in the NFL, but I don’t see how he projects as a right end. With the option of starting Allen and Young at end and David Bass, Cheta Ozougwu, Cornelius Washington, Trevor Scott, Austen Lane and Israel Idonije all competing to be the third and fourth rotational rushers, there now is no need to waste Houston there.

Certainly you can slide Allen outside and up and down the line on occasion – although, unlike Julius Peppers, Allen should not slide inside – but starting Houston at tackle would give the Bears a rare

asset.

Both Houston and Ratliff are talented enough to play the three-technique or the anchor/ nose tackle, stuff the run or be disruptive in the backfield.

Most teams don’t have one player like that. The Bears have two. If Nate Collins is healthy, don’t be surprised if Stephen Paea is the odd man out. Or will competition for a roster spot make Paea the player former GM Jerry Angelo and former coach Lovie Smith hoped he would be?

What’s left to do? Mundy deserves a shot to start, but he never will be mistaken for one of the top safeties in the league.

The Bears still need two starting safeties, depth at cornerback and more pass rush. You can’t be overly excited about any of the six guys competing for the third and fourth end spots.

Certainly, there is much work for the Bears left to do, but now we’ve got a border war.

Oh, and by the way, Vikings and Lions, how do you like that one?

Packers’ McCarthy: Signing Allen ‘a great pickup’

By ADAM L. JAHNS Chicago Sun-Times ORLANDO, Fla. – Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy didn’t know that the Bears had reached a deal with defensive end Jared Allen when he strolled through the hallways of the Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes after the NFL owners meetings concluded.

But he knows what his most formidable rival in the NFC North just added.

“A [darn] good football player,” McCarthy told the SunTimes. “It’s a great pickup for the Bears.”

Allen’s four-year deal with the Bears came together over the past few days as general manager Phil Emery and chief negotiator Cliff Stein worked

on it through the NFL owners meetings.

Regardless of restructuring quarterback Jay Cutler’s deal, the Bears had set aside a budget for another significant addition. Allen’s deal is worth $32 million, including $15.5 million guaranteed.

Allen will undergo a physical at Halas Hall on Monday and a news conference is scheduled for later that day.

“You can’t have enough playmakers and he’s been a great one for a number of years,” Bears president Ted Phillips said.

“We’re excited to have him in Chicago,” Bears chairman George McCaskey added. “Getting somebody of Jared’s talents is a big move.”

len harasses quarterbacks at an exceptional level. He’s 31, but still remains very productive and very durable, starting every single game over his past

six years in Minnesota.

Allen had 11.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss for the Vikings last season. He leads the NFL in sacks with 128.5 since entering the league in 2004.

“I’m a fan of Jared’s and just the way he plays,” McCarthy said. “He’s always been a force for the Vikings. We’ve had some tough battles against him.”

Allen is an immediate upgrade for a defense that was last in sacks in 2013. He also helps make up for the departures of defensive tackle Henry Melton (Cowboys) and defensive end Julius Peppers (Packers).

Allen is expected to start opposite defensive end Lamarr Houston with Willie Young now in a backup, rotational role.

Trestman praised Allen’s durability and dependability.

“Certainly, those are big to consistently playing at a high level,” Trestman told the SunTimes in Orlando. “He has all the trademarks. And of course, his love of the game. When you watch him play, you’re saying to yourself, ‘This man loves playing football,’ and he’s been doing it for a very long time at a high level. Phil, our personnel people and our coaches all feel that’s he’s got a lot left, and we believe we’re getting him at a great time.”

Adding Allen, who racked up 85.5 sacks over his six years with the Vikings, should definitely put a smirk on Cutler’s face. Trestman definitely appreciates not having to scheme against him anymore.

Northwestern football players have been granted the right to organize a union by the National Labor Relations Board, which ruled Wednesday that they are employees.

“This is a HUGE win for ALL college athletes!’’ tweeted NU quarterback Kain Colter when he learned about the ruling while working out in Florida.

It is an unprecedented move, but in football terms, it’s difficult to say if it’s a win or a really good return of the opening kickoff for student-athletes seeking a voice in the multibillion-dollar college-sports world.

There are so many questions to be answered, so many more skirmishes to come.

And yet, Colter and other student-athletes who share his view are right to believe they’ve scored an early victory. NU and the NCAA obviously think so.

“While we respect the NLRB process and the regional director’s opinion, we disagree with it,” the NU administration said in a news release. “Northwestern believes strongly that our student-athletes are not employees, but students. Unionization and collective bargaining are not the appropriate methods to address the concerns raised by student-athletes.”

The NCAA, which has been trying to head off growing criticism and legal confrontations with various olive branches to student-athletes, also objected strongly.

“While not a party to the proceeding, the NCAA is disappointed,” NCAA chief legal officer Donald Remy said. “We strongly disagree with the notion that student-athletes are employees. While improvements need to be made, we do not need to completely throw away a system that has helped literally millions of students over the past decade alone attend college.”

The next big hurdle will be NU’s appeal of the decision of

the Chicago region’s NLRB before the full NLRB in Washington, D.C. The United Steelworkers, who bankrolled the NU players’ legal battle, expressed confidence the ruling will not be overturned.

“Amazing victory for college athletes,” said Tim Waters, national political director for United Steelworkers.

“USW has said all along that these athletes are in fact employees, and now the NLRB has agreed. Athletes have tried every way possible to get a seat at the table, and this was the only avenue they were left with.”

Even another victory before the full NLRB would qualify as merely a necessary first down in the big college-sports picture.

Because it’s a relatively small, private school that belongs to the nation’s wealthiest conference, Northwestern was a natural place to start.

But organizing on other campuses would be needed to bring about a major change in college athletics.

The NLRB doesn’t have jurisdiction over public universities. But this ruling opens the door for similar organizing at other private schools.

Another ominous question: If Notre Dame, USC, Duke, DePaul and the other private schools wind up playing by different student-athlete rules than state universities, how do they compete against one another, or abide by one set of rules with their conference partners?

Many more steps seemingly will be necessary before Colter and others who believe major-college athletes ought to have more control over their situations cross their goal line. Between legal challenges and organizing efforts, it’s a process likely to take years.

A union at Northwestern, for example, wouldn’t amount to much in a vacuum.

That means similar organizing efforts would be required at campuses across America.

‘Noah’: Audacious adaptation of one of Bible’s most enigmatic chapters

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Old Testament fury has rarely come to such spectacularly fearsome life than in “Noah,” Darren Aronofsky’s audacious adaptation of one of the Bible’s best-known but still enigmatic chapters.

Be warned – anyone familiar with the 500-year-old man and his ark may need to check some of their most cherished visualizations of him at the theater door. No cozy two-by-two images of beatific giraffes grace this “Noah.” Like any good artist, Aronofsky has avoided predictable, literalistic retellings of beloved Sunday school stories, inserting new characters, bringing parenthetical figures to the fore and making one of history’s most enduring and universal myths his very own.

The result is a movie that is clearly deeply respectful of its source material but also at times startlingly revisionist, a go-for-broke throwback to Hollywood biblical epics of yore that combines grandeur and grace, as well as a generous dollop of goofy overstatement. Viewers may not agree about what they’ve seen when they come out of “Noah.” But there’s no doubt that Aronofsky has made an ambitious, serious, even visionary motion picture, whose super-sized popcorn-movie vernacular may occasionally submerge the story’s more reflective implications, but never drowns them entirely.

Appropriately enough, Aronofsky starts “In the Beginning,” and after a brief prologue revisiting Adam and Eve, original sin and the fatal rivalry between

Cain and Abel, catches up with Noah as a boy who, by virtue of his lineage and an enchanted snakeskin bestowed on him by his father, is clearly destined for greater things. Conceived and staged like a conventional superhero origin story, “Noah” then finds the grown-up protagonist – played by a solemn, haunted-looking Russell Crowe – living in Canaan alongside his wife, Naameh (Jennifer Connelly), and their sons, Ham, Shem and eventually Japeth.

Canaan is a desolate world of arid deserts, ruthless tribal warfare and dead cities, but also supernatural wonders. When Noah begins to experience visions of the apocalyptic flood to come, Aronofsky choreographs them not as words-fromon-high messages from the divine, but as stylized, terrifying unconscious visions.

Fans of the filmmaker’s

work – from “Requiem for a Dream” and “The Fountain” to “Black Swan” – won’t be surprised to learn that he’s at his best with these fantastical, mystically-inclined sequences. He’s just as evocatively expressive with the most technically challenging set pieces of the story: the arduous construction of the enormous Ark (here produced according to Biblical proportions, down to the last cubit), the arrival of the animals and that annihilating flood, which Aronofsky stages as an awesome cascade of rainstorms, geysers and terrifying waves.

Amidst such visual busyness, Crowe and Connelly deliver impressively grounded, powerful performances, with Crowe playing Noah first as a humble, divinely inspired servant and, eventually, as a wild-eyed zealot, and Connelly brimming with earthy rectitude as his far more steady-eyed wife. One of the

most delightful reshufflings is a central role for Noah’s ancient forebear, Methusela, played by Anthony Hopkins in a mischievous and altogether convincing turn as a white-haired figure of mystical, oracular wisdom.

So much of “Noah” is so good, and so impressively executed, that when discordant notes are sounded, they do so with clanging dissonance.

Aronofsky creates characters and story lines that feel wildly out of place – not because they don’t appear in Scripture, but because they’re so at odds with the often brilliant aesthetic language that animates the rest of the film. (We’ll chalk up Noah’s surprisingly sophisticated wardrobe of primitive-chic leathers and open-work knits up to artistic license.)

Like interpreters through the millennia, Aronofsky has taken Noah’s journey sincerely to heart, processed it through his own singular visual and moral imagination and come up with a narrative that feels deeply personal, broadly mythical and cannily commercial all at the same time.

That feels just about right for “Noah,” which ultimately invites viewers to form their own meanings, whether they’re about sacrifice and obedience, stewardship and service or the enduring entertainment value of an epic adventure that, thousands of years on, still manages to astonish.

Daily aspirin offers protection against heart disease Dear Doctor K: What are the risks of taking a daily aspirin to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke?

Dear Reader: I didn’t have to do much homework on this one, because I take a daily aspirin and already know the answer.

It was front-page news in 1988 when colleagues of mine at Harvard Medical School reported the results of a randomized trial that found that a daily aspirin protected against heart disease.

A simple, cheap, over-the-counter pill could protect against the No. 1 cause of premature death: heart disease (specifically, atherosclerosis of the arteries of the heart)? It seemed too good to be true.

In my opinion, it now is well established that daily aspirin protects people who have heart disease, or are at high risk of developing heart disease. It reduces their risk of future heart problems. If you have heart disease, or have had the most common kind of stroke (the kind caused by a blood clot), taking a low-dose (81-milligram) aspirin every day is probably a wise move.

But for the average adult (of either sex) who is not at high risk for heart disease, the value of daily aspirin is less clear. Every

Most heart attacks and strokes happen when a clot blocks blood flow in a vessel that feeds the heart or brain. Aspirin helps prevent these clots from forming. That’s the benefit of a daily aspirin.

But any medicine that makes blood clots less likely to form is likely to increase the risk of bleeding. That’s surely true of aspirin, although less so with low-dose aspirin than with a daily fullstrength aspirin pill (325 mg).

In addition to lowering the blood’s ability to clot, aspirin also irritates the stomach’s delicate lining. This can cause gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.

For people who are at high risk for GI bleeding – because of lifestyle practices such as heavy drinking, or diseases that increase the risk of GI bleeding – the risk may outweigh aspirin’s benefits.

Taking aspirin with food

can help. So, can drugs to treat heartburn, which help protect your stomach. Daily aspirin users can also lower their risk of GI bleeding by avoiding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.

What about the type of aspirin? Enteric coating prevents the aspirin from fully dissolving until it reaches the intestine.

That’s supposed to lessen stomach upset. Buffered aspirin combines aspirin with an antacid to “soothe the stomach.” However, to make a long story short, enteric-coated aspirin and buffered aspirin probably don’t reduce the risk of GI bleeding.

There’s also evidence that not all the aspirin in coated pills gets into your bloodstream. This can compromise its heart benefits.

Your best bet may be to take chewable low-dose aspirin. You may remember it from childhood as orange-flavored “baby” aspirin.

Dear Abby: I’m 62 and own my own home. I have legal guardianship of my eldest grandson, who is 5. Another grandchild is 2 1/2 and in foster care. I would like to keep both children together because I have been told that in the long run it is better so they won’t lose contact with each other.

Peter De Vries, a novelist and an editor who died in 1993, said: “The universe is like a safe to which there is a combination.

But the combination is locked up in the safe.”

I wonder if we will ever find that safe combination?

This week, we have been looking at various suit combinations. Here is another deceptive one. How should South play in six spades after West leads the diamond queen?

North’s initial two-no-trump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise. South’s jump to game showed a minimum opening with no singleton or void. North then launched Roman Key Card Blackwood, which was good for this deal. After South bid five diamonds, indicating zero or three key cards (the four aces and the trump king count as key cards), North relayed with five hearts to ask about the spade queen.

When South denied holding that card, North knew not to bid a grand slam. (And, yes, North might have signed off in six notrump.)

Since the side suits are solid, declarer’s only problem is to avoid two trump losers. South should start with a low trump from the board (not the ace), planning to rise with his king or to finesse his jack. When East shows out, declarer can still do either. If he wins with his king, he then leads low toward the board, covering West’s card as cheaply as possible. If South plays his jack, West wins with his queen and probably leads another diamond. But declarer wins on the board, plays a spade to his king, returns a spade to dummy’s nine, cashes the ace, and claims.

Noted urban architects move into country

By JERRY KUYPER editorial@kcchronicle.com The leader of Airhart Construction in West Chicago has taken a big chance on new house designs, and his ideas could be tested in Kane, McHenry or Cook counties in the near future. But not likely. Lots close to congested city downtowns are preferred sites for the designs, but any busy urban setting will do. That could include Crystal Lake, Cary, Algonquin, Woodstock, Barrington, the Dundees and Elgin.

The designs, which are called Modern Series homes, will have a modern tinge to them.

“These Modern Series homes are inspired by the international forms that debuted in the 1930s, namely from architects such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, pioneers in modern design.

“The Modern homes can be built at certain Airhart locations (townhouse developments near downtowns) and are also ideal for in-fill teardown sites. The designs lend themselves well to

Mies (as he was known and referred to) emphasized simplicity and function in his designs. Industrial steel, glass and chrome were significant construction

materials inside and outside his architectural creations. He was part of the Bauhaus crafts and fine arts movement in Germany from 1919-33. After becoming a citizen of the United States in 1944, he settled in Chicago and was named to head the

architecture school at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Le Corbusier (born in Switzerland, later became a French citizen) emphasized reinforced concrete columns, instead of walls, to bear structural loads, and popularized the horizontal

window that could extend the length of a building. His designs, which incorporated reinforced concrete stilts to get a building off the ground, were primarily for urban environments.

“We have three designs ready to go and are working on a fourth,” company founder Mac Airhart, 75, said. “We have designed them for a more urban setting or for a truly country setting. We are inspired by their [Mies and Le Corbusier] work, but not copying them. We are applying their principals for a moderately priced home ranging in sizes from 1,900 to 2,600 square feet.”

The elder Airhart, who founded the company 50 years ago, reiterated the outlook of his son. “These designs are ideal at tear-down sites close to a downtown. They work well on fairly narrow sites. Of course, they are very appropriate too in country settings with lots of evergreens and the necessary landscaping.

They do not work in new-house subdivisions.”
