Sports equipment stolen from area home

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – More than $2,500 in sports equipment was damaged or stolen last week at a home in far north St. Charles Township, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

A resident of the 36W300 block of Oak Pointe Drive reportedly told police that at 4:30 a.m. March 17 the family

dog, which was in a bedroom overlooking the back yard, began barking in a tone that startled her.

The back yard includes a sports court, where items later were discovered damaged or missing, according to the report. Damaged items included eight volleyballs, eight basketballs, a volleyball net, two basketball hoops and a rebound net, police reported.

Hockey equipment, such

as sticks and pads, was among the items reported stolen. One item reportedly was found along the tree line of the property.

The loss totaled $2,682, according to the report.

When the resident called Play It Again Sports to see whether any of her equipment had been turned in, she was told the St. Charles store had taken in a set of hockey leg and chest pads that afternoon, police reported.

A deputy went to the store, at 210 N. Randall Road, and learned from an employee that two males traded the equipment for $27.90 cash on the spot, police reported.

Police reported that one of the subjects had provided a name, address, signature and telephone number.

Lt. Pat Gengler wrote in an email Wednesday that the case remained under investigation, and no arrests had been made.

4 arrests made in traffic campaign KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police made four arrests and issued 17 citations during a two-week enforcement period that ended Sunday, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

The enforcement period was connected to a traffic safety campaign done in cooperation with and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, the release states.

There were two DUI arrests, one drug-related arrest and one Class 4 felony arrest that involved aggravated

fleeing and eluding police, according to St. Charles police reports.

Police officers also issued the following: two citations for suspended/revoked license; one citation for an uninsured motorist; 12 citations for speeding; two citations for other violations; and 21 warnings for various violations, the release states.

The enforcement period was part of a statewide program to reduce the number of traffic fatalities. Police remind residents to drive carefully and assist in removing impaired motorists from the road.

Spinach recall expands Organic products could have listeria contamination KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com A spinach recall that initially affected Amy’s Kitchen products has since expanded to include more items from other companies, according to the Kane County Health Department.

Amy’s Kitchen announced a voluntary recall of about 73,897 cases of various products – including lasagna, enchilada and pizza meals – early this week because of possible listeria contamination.

Soon afterward, Carmel Food Group initiated a recall of certain Rising Moon Organics frozen ravioli varieties, including garlic and roasted veggie, spinach and cheese, and spinach florentine.

In a news release, the health department announced Wednesday that the recall has expanded to include Superior Foods Inc. and Twin City Foods Inc. products.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the release.

Healthy individuals may suffer such short-term symptoms as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, according to the release. An infection also can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

The release noted that no illnesses related to the spinach recall had been reported, but the products were distributed to stores nationwide.

Batavia School Board candidates discuss communication at forum hosted by Chamber

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Candidates for Batavia School District 101 Board on Wednesday addressed such topics as whether the board communicates effectively with the public during a forum hosted by the Batavia Chamber of Commerce.

The forum was moderated

by Joe Kosner, the chair of the Batavia Chamber Legislative Affairs Committee. Eight candidates are running for three seats on the Batavia School Board in the April election.

Candidates include former Batavia High School social studies teacher John Dryden, Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel, board member Melanie Impastato, and Ron Rechenmacher, William “Bill” Gabriel, Ellen Knautz, Christopher Lowe and Michelle Olache.

Olache, Rechenmacher and Gabriel are running together as a slate.

Candidates spoke to a packed room at the Batavia Public Library. Several of them said the board needs to do a better job communicating with the public, including Rechenmacher, who said many community members are being left out of the process.

“We can and need to do better,” Rechenmacher said.

Gabriel proposed that the board hold an additional school board meeting every month “where the community can come and have real dialogue.”

Lowe said the school board needs to have a bigger presence in the community, including being at local festivals and football games.

“We need to be at as many places as we can,” Lowe said.

But Impastato said that communication is a “huge priority” of the board, and that communication with the public has improved since she was appointed to the board in

Dremel said that while other school districts have strug-

gled, Batavia School District still provides a good education.

“We’ve always taken a long-term view in what we’ve done,” she said.

Knautz said the district has set its curricular fees too high.

“They are the highest curricular fees in the area,” she said.

Olache said the district has been “willing to spend money much too hastily.” She also criticized the district’s $15 million referendum in November.

Voters in November soundly defeated Batavia School District 101’s $15 million capital improvement referendum.

The district wanted to issue up to $15 million in alternate revenue bonds to fund the projects.

ST. CHARLES – The city of St. Charles has developed a brochure written in Spanish that outlines some useful city services, community resources and important safety information, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

The brochure contains information based on questions the city has received from Spanish-speaking residents, as well as other helpful information, the release states.

“One of our priorities at the city is building quality relationships with our citizens and fostering a sense of community for all,” City Administrator Mark Koenen wrote in the release. “We wanted to make sure our Spanish-speaking residents have access to the information that is included in this brochure.”

The brochure is available at the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St.; the St. Charles Police Department, 211 N. Riverside Ave.; and the Public Works building, 200 Devereaux Way, all in St. Charles.

intendent Julie-Ann Fuchs sought board approval to extend a contract with GCA to continue providing custodial services to the district for the 2015-16 school year.

The cost is $1,411,205, which is the same as the district pays for the current school year. It is a one-year extension.

Lopatin objected. He said he was “uncomfortable” locking the staff into a salary with no increase, though he understood it was part of the board’s

financial stewardship to keep costs down.

A district document provided by Fuchs indicated that the district has used 3 percent as a percentage to increase salaries.

Last year, GCA gave employees a 1.5 percent salary increase and used the remaining amount to cover the cost of a health insurance increase, the document stated.

The district had intended to go through a bid process, but GCA offered to extend the contract for a year, and district officials opted to recommend staying with GCA. Cheryl Krauspe, the board’s president, said it would be risky to go through a bid process.

Lopatin said he understood that, but added “I am not willing to support that as it is.”

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County officials are on alert after fraudulent purchases were discovered, staff told a County Board committee Wednesday.

In her report to the Finance Committee, Purchasing Director Theresa Dobersztyn

said her department became aware of about $32,000 in attempted computer and telephone equipment purchases from vendors on the West Coast for delivery to an Oklahoma storage facility.

Apparently, someone used county letterhead to create fake purchase orders, Chief Information Officer Roger Fahnestock said.

Dobersztyn said several county departments were notified of the matter: information technology, finance, the sheriff’s office, human resources, the state’s attorney’s

office and the auditor.

It has been turned over to the sheriff’s office and is under investigation, she said.

Meanwhile, Dobersztyn said, all department heads, elected officials and financial staff have been told to be on alert for invoices for merchan-

dise they did not receive. She said they were given specific instructions for reporting and handling such invoices.

No such fraudulent invoices had been reported as of Tuesday, she said.

In other news, county officials are continuing to moni-

tor the sheriff’s budget.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told the committee that the amended sheriff’s budget had a net favorable variance of $29,000 as of Monday.

Rodney Peltier of Maple Park, passed away at Delnor Hospital in Geneva on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at the age of 79. Beloved husband of recently departed Annette (nee Benestanti).

He is survived by his four children, Dennis of Boulder, CO, Steven of Ash Grove, MO, Mark (Carla) of Lake in the Hills, and Maria (Reid) Forth of Big Rock; and nine grandchildren; as well as one sister, Pamela Collins of Redmond, WA. Rodney was born July 13, 1935, in Chicago, the son of Quentin and Vera (Meyer) Peltier. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School in 1953, and was a lifelong Chicago area resident. Rodney served in the U.S. Naval Air Reserve as a radar operator from 1953 to 1961 and was employed as a sales correspondent and production control manager prior to beginning his career with Prudential Insurance in 1962.

Rod was an avid gardener and

enjoyed sailing and fishing. Also, he was an active member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Maple Park and was involved with the Saturday morning men’s group.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mary of the Assumption Church on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at 9:30 a.m., in Maple Park. Burial will be held privately.

The Kane County Board has been working since January to address the financial implications of Sheriff Donald Kramer’s decision to reduce the number of federal inmates housed at the jail.

The U.S. Marshals Service program, which generated $231,487 in revenue in December and January, was expected to bring in $2.5 million this

fiscal year. The County Board approved cuts in February and March that reduced the more than $2 million shortfall to $500,000.

Noting the jail has fewer inmates, board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, asked Onzick about overtime expenses.

“Can you guys watch that carefully?” she asked.

Onzick agreed but noted that overtime accrual may be unrelated to the changes in the U.S. Marshals program.

There is an assumption that overtime would be offset by savings in other areas, he said.

‘April in Paris’ art exhibit coming up

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Public Library will host a special art exhibition, “April in Paris in St. Charles,” from April 2 to 30 on the mezzanine level at the library, which is at 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles.

The exhibit will feature 40 new paintings of contemporary Paris by Wayne artist Gene McCormick, who created the paintings based on recent lengthy visits.

There will be a meet-theartist reception from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 2. There is no charge to attend the casual event, and proceeds from the sale of any paintings will benefit area no-kill animal shelters.

AURORA – The Label Printers, a custom label and packaging manufacturer in Aurora, won the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute’s Singer Award for Management Excellence for the sixth time in a row.

The award recognizes excellence in business management, measured and defined by an established set of ratios, according to the institute. The Singer Award is given annually to four narrow web converting companies based on their sales range category. The companies applying for it represent nearly 40 percent of the North American label market.

Primrose Farm in St. Charles is no different. Animals are busting out of the barn, buds are bursting from the trees and that means that there’s a wealth of activities to see – and do – as the temperatures climb.

“A lot of our work around the farm involves getting the animals ready to spend more time outside,” said Laura Johns, manager of farm programs and interpretive services at Primrose Farm. “We need to make sure that fence lines are still secure after the winter, see that there is no wind-blown trash or debris in the pastures that could harm the animals and check to make sure all the water lines are open and running.”

Tasks like these were essential to the successful operation of a working farm back in the 1930s. To learn what life was like in your forefathers’ time, come out to the Springtime on the Farm event on Saturday and Sunday to try your hand at one of these important farm chores.

Weather permitting, one might be able to broadcast some oats or plant potatoes, whitewash the barn or help prepare the pastures for the farm’s newest residents – Otto and Ernie.

The two bull calves born in February will be making their official debut. Both are offspring of Primrose Farm Jersey cows, and both are named for former area farmers: Karl Otto Bormann, who owned the Spriet Farm parcel in the early 20th century; and Ernest “Ernie” Anderson,

The littlest farmers will enjoy a special snack in the summer kitchen and then go out to meet and greet all the farm’s animals, from Otto

“This allows them to take what they’ve learned about the animals in their story and see it come to life out in the farmyard,” Johns said.

Cows come home to roost once again during the Coffee and Cows Playgroup. Scheduled to run one Friday each month from April to August, Coffee and Cows is a great way for stay-at-home moms, dads, grandparents or nannies to bring the young ones out to the farm for a change of scenery while they socialize in the summer kitchen.

“It’s a great chance for adults to socialize and for kids to play at the farm,” Johns said.

Tours and other information will be provided so that interested groups can help out in the garden or simply stroll the grounds, if they want to extend their time at Primrose Farm, Johns said.

Those grounds really come alive from spring into summer as the garden emerges from its winter dormancy.

Anyone who is interested in starting a home garden or renting one of the St. Charles Park District’s community garden plots but doesn’t know a hoe from a rake can come out to the Gardens and Scarecrows: The Basics program on April 11. Green thumbs will blossom as Primrose Farm staff explain the essentials of soil preparation, proper watering, garden layout and other key information designed to help produce prolific yields.

“We’ll take the group out and show them how the Primrose Farm garden is organized and explain how it works so they can see gardening practices in action,” said Johns.

Participants will also get into some scarecrow-making action as they assemble their

own garden scarecrow to help them keep marauding crows and other critters away. Hats, heads, frames and straw will be provided, but class attendees should bring their own scarecrow outfits.

“This class will allow participants to embrace the ‘Year of the Scarecrow’ celebration and empower the community to come out and make their own scarecrow,” said Johns.

But if you’d rather make a scarf than a scarecrow, then the Sheep to Shawl program on April 25 may be more to your liking. Knitters, crocheters, quilters and other fabric crafters will get to connect the dots between their finished projects and where their materials come from. The farm’s flock of Shropshire sheep will be on hand (hoof?) as staff and volunteers demonstrate the washing, carding and spinning that needs to take place before wool can be used by crafters.

“It’s fun to meet our sheep and see how the wool people just go out and buy in finished form actually starts out,” said Johns.

Bring your own projects to work on while you socialize around tea and cookies in the summer kitchen and swap ideas with other textile artists.

The sixth annual County Health Rankings – which were released Wednesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute – placed Kane as the fifth healthiest county in Illinois, up from ninth place in 2014.

Kane previously ranked 12th in 2013, eighth in 2012, ninth in 2011 and 11th in 2010.

“The County Health Rankings show us that where we live matters to our health,” Kane County Health Department Executive Director

Barb Jeffers said in a statement.

“Even if we rank relatively high overall, we know that we can take steps to improve the health of all our residents.

All of us want Kane County to be a healthier place.”

Kendall and DuPage counties also were ranked in the top five in overall health outcomes.

The rankings were based on a number of measurements, including length and quality of life, adult obesity, physical inactivity, medical care, unemployment and air pollution.

Spring break, horses a bad combination Spring break is perhaps one of my favorite times of the year, as I’ve had my fair share of pleasant vacations.

Once I traveled to the Mall of America and rode on the indoor roller coasters, and twice I escaped to Florida to be surrounded in a warm, tropical paradise. With spring break only a week away, I cannot wait to just enjoy one week of relaxation.

And although I’ve experienced my fair amount of pleasant trips, one spring break vacation with my family forever will stick out in my mind: Tennessee. Oh, good old Tennessee. Now, I was about 7 when we went on this trip, and for the majority of the time everything went smoothly. My family and I went to the Smoky Mountains, mined for gold and visited a bunch of old historical sites.

However, one day on the trip my father decided we all should go horseback riding.

As a little girl, of course I was more than thrilled to go horseback riding for the first time.

I was a tad bit nervous about the whole idea, but I told my dad I would ride a horse if only we didn’t go up any hills.

So, my dad agreed and called a horse ranch to book our journey.

Once arriving at the ranch, my stomach dropped.

I saw stalls of horses, and the disgusting stench of farm animals flooded my nose. Not to mention, I could see gigantic hills among the scenery.

Apparently, the horse ranch owners had failed to inform my dad that this horseback riding adventure included a path that went up some tiny mountains.

Soon, my family got assigned to our horses. My mother and I rode together on a tan horse named California, my brother and my dad rode

Long story short, I now hate horses. Why? I’ll tell you. My horse was a lunatic.

It didn’t listen to the tour guide’s commands; it would gallop when it was supposed to casually stroll; and it would stop and eat every two feet.

It was as if my horse didn’t have a brain. However, my eldest brother’s horse bucked him off, so at least that didn’t happen to me. On the other hand, my other brother and dad had the “angel” horse that cooperated beautifully.

At one point, my horse was outrageously galloping on the path, when all of a sudden California slipped on the muddy trail. The next thing I knew, my mom and I were hanging halfway off a mountain while our horse fought to keep us from completely falling to our deaths. Luckily, with the tour guide’s help, California pulled us back onto the path. Thus, here I am today. Nonetheless, the entire horseback riding experience was a mess. I’m almost positive that all I did the entire ride was bawl my eyes out and scream for help. What a great day.

Basically, I never will go horseback riding again. If my dad ever wants my family to ride horses again, I’ll gladly wave and watch him.

A boost for defense THE WASHINGTON POST Two pieces of good news about U.S. defense spending: Both President Obama and congressional Republicans have recognized that cuts imposed by the 2011 “sequester” scheme are unacceptable, and both have moved to restore tens of billions of dollars in funding for next year’s budget.

Two pieces of bad news: The proposed increases still face thorny political challenges – and even the revised spending plan remains far from adequate at a time when the United States has returned to war in the Middle East and faces mounting threats elsewhere.

Mr. Obama was the first to propose breaching the spending level for fiscal year 2016 mandated by the

His total of $612 billion now has been roughly matched by budget outlines passed by Republican-controlled committees in the House and Senate. If those survive floor votes in the coming days, Republican defense hawks will have succeeded in overcoming tea party conservatives who pushed to retain the sequester limits and force devastating cuts on

the Pentagon.

The politics, however, remain tricky. Mr. Obama proposed matching the defense increase with an equal amount of added domestic spending, but the Republican budget plans exclude that.

That might make it difficult to win the floor votes, if Democratic support is needed, and Mr. Obama might eventually resist a defense increase if there is no domestic counterpart.

Garfield Farm at the center of new book Town House Books in St. Charles to host signing event Saturday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – In sitting down to write her first novel, Ann Brack-Johnson turned to a subject matter close to her heart – Garfield Farm and Inn Museum.

The Campton Hills resident is a volunteer at the museum, which is a 375acre, historically-intact, former Illinois prairie farmstead and teamster inn being restored as an 1840s working farm and inn museum. She also is married to Garfield Farm Executive Director Jerome Johnson.

Brack-Johnson is the author of the book “Angie of Garfield Farm,” a book based on the life of the Garfield family.

The book is available for purchase at www.amazon.com and at Town House Books, 105 N. 2nd Ave., St. Charles.

Geneva artist Pamela Hamilton illustrated the book. Brack-Johnson and Hamilton will be on hand to sign copies of the book and answer questions from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, during a book launching at Town House Books.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Brack-Johnson about the book.

Eric Schelkopf: How long did it take for you to research the book?

Ann Brack-Johnson: This has been a work in progress for the last 15 years. I had a full-time job with AT&T through those years, and then there are family things that happen along with my volunteer duties at Garfield Farm. Life happens. So you work on a personal project like this, and sometimes it takes time.

Schelkopf: So, the book is fiction, but are the characters real?

Brack-Johnson: It’s sort of a combination.

Schelkopf: What do you do at the Garfield Farm Museum?

Brack-Johnson: I’m a docent. And usually I’m in the house here, helping to give tours. I’m also the wardrobe mistress, so I kind of keep track of the period clothing and when they’re in need of washing and repair, I help with that.

Schelkopf: Why do you like being a volunteer at Garfield Farm Museum?

Brack-Johnson: I think it’s important to give back to your community. And this is such a wonderful place. I really believe that Garfield Farm is a national treasure, and nonprofit organizations like this would not exist without volunteer efforts and generous donors.

The neighbors who are referenced in the story are real. Part of the story includes Harry, who is a freed black man. During the course of the story, he gets kidnapped by bounty hunters that are coming through the area. The threat there, of course, is that he may be taken back to the South and sold back into slavery.

Schelkopf: How did you come up with the story?

Brack-Johnson: Well, the very beginning of it is due to Marsha Erickson, who is one of our volunteers here at Garfield Farm. She made me promise to write a children’s story to relate the history of the museum to children. Harry also was an actual person who came out to Illinois with the Wilson family. We’re not sure

what his official last name was. And the Wilson house is located on Burr Road, a little north of Dean Street.

One of our board members owns the house, and so she started relating this part of the history of the house and the Wilson family to me.

Schelkopf: Tell me about the illustrations in the book.

Brack-Johnson: Pam Hamilton lives in Geneva and is a wonderful artist. She had been the art director for Country Sampler magazine. I met her at the Geneva art show this past summer, and she was just a dream to work with, and I really like her style. It really captures that atmosphere that I wanted to convey.

Schelkopf: Do you see “Angie of Garfield Farm” being part of a series of books?

Brack-Johnson: Oh, there’s a sequel. The story is written from the point of view of Schelkopf: In writing the book, did you want to Angeline Victoria Garfield. introduce Garfield Farm to younger generations?

She’s 9 years old in 1847. She’s all Brack-Johnson: Oh, absolutely. I think focused on what she can bring to a dance, it’s very important for people of all ages to and she wishes she could have a new have some understanding of their history, dress. Italian monastery’s winter whites full of character Abbazia di Novacella is a centuries old Italian monastery with a dramatic view.

With vineyards planted on the southern hills and slopes of the Alps, Abbazia di Novacella has a rich tradition to match its impressive vista.

Seated in front of a large picture window for a Skype interview, Dr. Urban von Klebelsberg, the administrator of the monastery, was a charming, friendly and passionate representative for the wines. Worried his English wouldn’t be good enough, he even had a translator present in case an assist was needed.

But, with a big smile and love of wine, we communicated just fine.

It’s easy to convey the story of great, affordable wines.

Winemaker spotlight When phylloxera, the vineyard pest that wiped out most European vineyards in the late 19th century, took its toll on Abbazia di Novacella, it provided opportunity.

After eight centuries of making red wine – the monastery was founded in 1142 – it was time for change. Winter at Abbazia di Novacella features snow and cold temperatures. The growing season is cooler than southern Italy; vineyards are planted at elevation; and winds can howl as they come off the Alps.

German winemakers had success with white varietals under similar conditions, and Abbazia di Novacella made a decision that has led to a collection of impressive, hearty and complex white wines.

“Our climate allows these grapes to ripen on time,” von Klebelsberg said. “We have a lot of mineralogy in our wines because the type of stones in the soil. Our wines are fresh and have good acidity.”

The Abbazia di Novacella, Adige Valle Isarco DOC, Grüner Veltliner, 2013 ($19), was the most complex and impressive of the three whites I sampled.

Stone fruit, pear skin and a crispy green note mingles with the underlying acidity. It’s a great value that will get better with a few years in the cellar. Buy a bottle for now and save one for later.

From the northernmost wine growing region in Italy comes the most impressive pinot grigio I’ve had in years. Often mass produced and simplified domestically to produce instant cash for a winery, Abbazia di Novacella, Alto Adige Valle Isarco DOC, Pinot Grigio, 2013 ($19), has

peach, cantaloupe and tangerine peel flavors along with an orange blossom and unctuous, oily characteristic that was riveting and unexpected.

While the pinot grigio was a pleasant surprise, the Abbazia di Novacella, Alto Adige Valle Isarco DOC, Kerner, 2013 ($19) was like a blind date. It was a variety I didn’t know and one that von Klesbelsberg has used as a surprise time and time again.

“The Kerner has a great personal story for me that dates back to when I started in 1987,” he said with a chuckle. “The first day I smelled Kerner and was told it was the forbidden wine.

So, of course, I wanted to test it out.

It had only been used as a blend and didn’t have approval to be bottled on its own.

“But its characteristics and the fact that it loves to be grown at elevation and handles winters well was a benefit. I started to bring it to tastings and people all thought it was a riesling. To this day people still do the same thing.”

Made in an artisan style, Kerner delivers an unctuous white wine full of character. All three wines are as crisp as a spring day. But they have the weight, texture and bold flavors to stand up to the coldest winter.

What to buy Abbazia di Novacella, Alto Adige Pinot Nero, 2013, $25 Leaner than a typically riper, California pinot noir, there are dried roses on the nose that yield to flavors of currants and vanilla. Approachable at a young age and low in alcohol.

Paramount Theatre stages stellar take on ‘Les Misérables’

But the Paramount has outdone itself with a powerful production of “Les Misérables.”

For the uninitiated, “Les Misérables” tells the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his journey for redemption after being jailed for 19 years for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child.

The story is set in early 19th century France. The Paramount knows how to set a scene, and its dark and striking scenery puts the audience right in the mood of the production.

The production also features several standout performances, namely from Robert Wilde in the role of Valjean and Rod Thomas in the role of Javert. Both Wilde and Thomas have the vocal range and acting chops needed for their challenging roles.

They also are both new to the Paramount stage. Let’s hope it won’t be their last time.

“I love being in those positions,” Navigato said. “I love taking the last shot. … I had full confidence I could make a shot, win a game for our team like that.”

St. Charles East senior guard Cole Gentry – not Navigato – was voted Upstate Eight Conference River Player of the Year. Navigato didn’t begrudge Gentry the honor, but he acknowledged it provided “a little bit” of extra motivational juice for his final games in Geneva blue.

“I’ve played with Cole, I love Cole – he deserves it, he’s a great player,” Navigato said.

“But, yeah, I guess you could

say it kind of set a fire. But like I said, I was here for bigger and better things. I wanted to come down here like we did and prove everyone wrong who doubted us the whole year.”

Geneva senior guard Pace Temple often drew opposing teams’ most gifted scorer as a defensive assignment.

He’s defended plenty of elite players, but practice matchups with Navigato presented challenges seldom replicated by opponents.

“If you get up in his face, he’ll go around you,” Temple said. “If you try to get in front and deny him, he’ll get in the post and score on you, and then if you take one second to relax, he’ll hit a 3 in your eye.

So it’s really just that aspect of

he can score from anywhere at any time, and pretty much the endless range makes it pretty difficult, too.”

The Buffalo recruit’s polished, offensive skill set gave coach Phil Ralston a trump card for whichever size matchup or defensive scheme opponents attempted.

“We’ve seen every conceivable defense that’s been thrown at us this year, from boxes-andones to zones, and nothing’s really been effective at stopping him from being effective, and I think part of it’s because he is so unselfish that when he gets his touches, he doesn’t launch bad shots,” Ralston said. “He’s very efficient at what he does.”

The Upstate Eight Conference River MVP led East with 18.2 points and 4.7 assists a game while shooting 50 percent from 3-point land before committing to South Dakota State this month.

Known for his ability to drive to the rim and finish in transition, Ludwig also hurt teams beyond the arc, most notably a memorable 3-pointer in overtime to deliver North its signature win of the season against St. Charles East. “He had the ball in his hands an awful lot this year, which was by design, and he’s unselfish – takes what the defense gives him and makes the correct basketball play,” North coach Tom Poulin said.

St. Charles North, Sr., F Callaghan’s well-rounded game showed up in numerous statistical categories – 10.8 points a game, a team-best 6.6 rebounds a game, 3.3 assists a game, 1.4 steals a game – but Callaghan’s overall leadership, grit and penchant for clutch play made his intangibles especially valuable. Poulin called the crafty Callaghan “a player that makes his coach better, as well as his teammates.” Poulin added: “Jack wants to win as much as anybody who’s come through this program.”

The IBCA Class 3A/4A first-teamer averaged 20.5 points and 5.4 rebounds, and saved some of his finest performances for March, including a decisive three-point play with 10 seconds to go in a sectional championship game against Rockford Auburn.

Geneva, Jr., C After a promising but foulplagued sophomore season, Vollbrecht ranked among the area’s most improved players as a junior, giving the Vikings a formidable interior scorer and rebounder who lent Geneva an intimidating presence in the paint. Remarkably nimble for his size, Vollbrecht averaged 10.8 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds for the powerhouse Vikings.

But Vikings coach Phil Ralston said it was “absolutely” extra gratifying considering what Geneva had to do to make it.

The Vikings faced a highly rigorous postseason path; all seven of the teams they faced, beginning with DeKalb in a regional semifinal, exceeded 20 wins on the season.

Despite the degree of difficulty and drastically differing styles of play among postseason foes, Ralston’s Vikings found solutions, ousting DeKalb, St. Charles East, Rockford Jefferson, Rockford Auburn and Lake Park en route to finishing fourth in Class 4A. As strong of a team as the towering Vikings (30-5) were, many suspected they would struggle to survive their loaded regional, which culminated with a much-hyped showdown against East, their Upstate Eight Conference River co-champion.

“If the season had ended there, we would have said, ‘Hey, what a great year,’ ” Ralston said. “And then to go on and win the sectional … fantastic.”

Ralston, the repeat Kane County Chronicle Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, steered the Vikings to their first downstate appearance since 1963 and the program’s first 30-win season since then.

It wasn’t just the rugged postseason competition that posed challenges. Although Geneva’s unprecedented height put the Vikings in an enviable position, the team’s nontraditional makeup also presented quirks that needed to be addressed.

The Vikings had few ball-handling options, and their backcourt conundrum became especially pronounced when Pace Temple missed the 2014 portion of the schedule mending a knee injury. Ralston also had to navigate the potential for sulking over playing time as a glut of big men created a crowded rotation.

Through it all, the Vikings played to their strengths in the paint and kept winning, rolling to a 16-game winning streak that ended in the regular-season finale at Larkin.

Identifying ways to keep standout senior Nate Navigato clicking despite opponents’ best-laid defensive plans was among Ralston’s top priorities. The pro-

gram’s all-time leading scorer thrived as a senior, averaging 20.5 points while being the go-to guy in the clutch.

“A lot of what we do offensively is we try to be hard to guard,” Ralston said. “We know that Nate’s going to draw everyone’s best defender, but we try to make it as difficult for whoever that best defender is to be able to hang on him.”

Navigato credited Ralston for helping him pick up some of the nuances that allowed him to put defenders in a lurch. “[Ralston] tells me sometimes to come off screens in different ways, sometimes I use them to curl or something, and then [my teammates] always do a good job of getting me the ball and giving it to me in good position to shoot,” Navigato said.

Ralston’s 250th career victory – counting his previous tenure at Grant – came in Geneva’s sectional championship triumph against Auburn, and he has a 143-67 record during his seven-year run with the Vikings.

His switching defenses, emphasis on sound shot selection and growing skills as a delegator – he said he wasn’t as much of a “tyrant” this year, leaning more heavily on assistants Scott Hennig and Rob Wicinski – netted championship results.

“I think my role here is to try to keep the kids focused, organized, prepared for what they’re going to see,” Ralston said. “And then it’s their opportunity to perform on the floor.”

lywood pitching mounds line one wall of the Kaneland gym balcony, a practice prop for whenever the baseball team must retreat indoors.

It’s custom for a Knight to jump on each one to test its durability, with the wobbliest mound not making the cut to come downstairs to the main gym.

The players themselves don’t have such a test. As coach Brian Aversa sees it, every piece assembled before him screams sturdiness.

“We’re strong defensively, so we’ll be in every game this year,” Aversa said. “Nobody’s going to 10-run-rule us. Nobody’s going to kill us.”

Kaneland returns experience around the horn, with senior middle infielders Joey Panico (shortstop) and Austin Wheatley (second base) bringing the most seasoning.

Senior corner men Jacob Bachio (third base) and Dan Hammermeister (first base) also started for extended stretches in 2014, when the Knights finished 18-17 while struggling to accumulate key hits in close games.

A season-ending, 1-0 loss to Sycamore in a Class 3A Rochelle Sectional semifinal accentuated the point, leaving several Knights thirsting for another shot this spring.

Junior catcher Joe Laudont, a mainstay behind the plate before breaking the thumb in his left, catching hand midway through the regular season, is among those who seized the urgency.

“Being a catcher, you want to take on that leadership, and just be like, ‘What can I do for the team out there on the field, and what can I do to sacrifice myself to give as much as I can for this team?’ ” Laudont said. “You want to be the one leading everybody, showing by example and

working hard every single day.

“I think this whole offseason really showed me what I need to do to be a good leader out there.”

Completing the strongup-the-middle motif, senior center fielder Nick Stratman returns, buoyed by a longtime passion for the position.

“I’ve always played it since I was little,” he said. “It’s what I’m used to. I just like it a lot.”

It’s not as if Kaneland showed an aversion to plate discipline or offensive preparation last season, Aversa said. The Knights simply found themselves in tight games.

On their end, they stuck around those contests behind pitching and defense. The staff returns its share of talent, too, including seniors Colton Fellows, Steven Limbrunner and Jordan Bock.

North attacks quickly, stays creative

By THOMAS KUEBEL editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – St. Charles North deflated the Geneva girls soccer team by finding the back of the net less than three minutes into Wednesday’s game, after two quality Geneva scoring chances were denied by North goalkeeper and senior captain Shelby Stitz.

The North Stars sustained the momentum en route to defeating the Vikings, 3-1, in an early Upstate Eight Conference River Division showdown.

Hanna Durocher scored first for coach Ruth Vostal’s North Stars, a team that reached the sectional semifinals in last season’s Class 3A playoffs. Durocher also tallied assists on North’s other two goals.

Katy Kusswurm scored the second goal for North (1-1, 1-0 UEC River) on a feed from Durocher seconds after a vicious tackle on Durocher made it seem like she would not get back to her feet.

However, she was able to recover, get onside and feed a perfect pass to Kusswurm, who put the ball away in the lower right corner. DePaul-bound senior Lizzie Parrilli kicked the third goal of the half for North off the post and in.

“Today I was pleased with our offensive play,” Vostal said. “I thought we created a lot of creative opportunities, finished a few of them. I thought we had a few others that we could have finished, but I was happy with what we created.

“Both Lizzie and Hanna played great, fought hard. I think they are great leaders.

They are two of my three captains, the other being Stitz. It’s great to have them up the middle. They fight and know the hard work it takes, and then, obviously, they are talented, as well.”

North also boasts two sets of sisters. Freshman Hailey Rydberg was active from her midfield position while her junior sister, Abby, is nursing a stress fracture. Also, junior Elli Wahlberg and her fresh-

man sister, Gia, both contributed from their midfield positions.

Gia Wahlberg nearly had a goal on a breakaway attempt with two minutes left in the first half but was denied by Geneva keeper Emma Harkleroad.

Geneva scored at the 24-minute mark of the second-half as freshman Katelyn Keenehan snuck behind the defense for the first goal of her career. For the Vikings, coach Megan Owens is taking the team’s season opener as a learning experience, and understandably so.

“You could tell nerves played a little bit,” Owens said. “We’re young. We have six freshmen and six sophomores; we’re just young. In the second half, we started clicking a little bit more. That was my goal at halftime, win the second half.”

Geneva returns to action Saturday at home against West Aurora, while the North Stars on Monday will host Plainfield North.

Although Navigato’s shooting touch (54 percent from the floor), footwork and unselfishness often are lauded, his superior conditioning might have gone underappreciated.

He played every meaningful second of Geneva’s most competitive games, mustering the energy to make decisive fourth-quarter plays despite opponents’ toughest defenders regularly clutching and bumping him from start to finish.

“Nate never tells us he needs a break, so I think that kind of tells you the condition he’s in,” Ralston said.

Navigato’s connection to his alma mater figures to remain strong in the coming years. His triplet younger brothers – Cole, Devin and Dominic – played sophomore ball for the Vikings this season.

“My three brothers are coming up, I have a sister as well,” Navigato said. “Hopefully, they can come in and do some things. I know they will.

Obviously, I’m going to be proud of them, I love them. It’s

been an incredible journey.

I loved every single moment of it.”

Navigato finished with 1,757 career points, but that sectional final berth as a junior and trip to Peoria as a senior will be remembered longer.

Lauding his star’s supreme work ethic, Ralston paid Navigato the ultimate hoops compliment.

“He is the poster child of every Geneva kid who wants to play basketball, or at least he should be,” Ralston said.

“He didn’t just get this way because he’s just naturally gifted alone. There is some of that, as well, but the kid puts in time that no one else does.

That’s why he’s that good.

“He gets into the gym and he works on his shot. I don’t think enough kids that truly want to play basketball do that, getting into the gym at 6 a.m. to work on your game. I mean, how many kids do that?

Nate does that. How many kids in the middle of July, during AAU season, are still coming into the school and getting up 1,000 shots? Nate did.”

Nate did an awful lot.

Junior shortstop Jack Wassel hit .327 with 29 RBIs last season, lefties Garrett Davis and Mitchell Merges both had sub-2.00 ERAs and senior catcher Nate Montgomery is a three-year starter. “We hope to be right in the [conference] race when all is said and done,” coach Matt Hahn said.

ST. CHARLES EAST Returning right-hander Mick Vyzral eclipsed the previous single-season program record of four saves after only 14 games last season. He may not challenge his existing mark of eight, and not

just because the Saints will try him in the rotation to begin the year.

“We’re hoping we get a little more offensive production so we’re not in such tight games,” coach Len Asquini said, “but we’re also able to bang it out if we have to.”

ST. CHARLES NORTH North touts its share of starting rotation headliners in Cory Wright (Kansas State) and Sam Hubbe (Butler), but faces early-season bullpen questions as it sets to build on last season’s regional title.

Coach Todd Genke highlights the team’s mound and defensive depth, but these guys should be athletic at the plate, too. Junior outfielder Brendan Joyce batted .477 during summer league play.

Results are mixed for RA alternative therapies Dear Doctor K: I have rheumatoid arthritis. Medications have helped, but only up to a point. Can you discuss alternative therapies that might help to further relieve my discomfort?

Dear Reader: Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term disease in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue lining the joints. This causes swelling, pain, redness and stiffness in joints throughout the body.

Drug treatments slow the effects of the disease, but alternative approaches can also help to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

I’ll tell you what I know about the evidence for some of the more popular alternative therapies.

Talk to your doctor before you try any of these.

• Acupuncture involves inserting tiny, sterile needles into the skin. It may relieve pain by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. The few studies of acupuncture for RA have had mixed results. If acupuncture is performed by experienced therapists who are careful to sterilize their needles, it may help, and it has little risk.

• Meditation directs the focus of attention on the present moment.

At least one study found that this type of meditation helped people

• Biofeedback is a technique that helps you monitor and control your body’s responses. Some evidence suggests that this may be helpful for pain relief in people with RA. • Relaxation training includes the technique of tensing certain muscles and then relaxing them.

Relaxation training has been studied for RA, with mixed results.

• Tai chi is a low-impact, slow-motion exercise that emphasizes breathing and mental focus.

It involves moving continuously through a series of motions. Some small studies haven’t shown it to improve joint pain, swelling or tenderness in people with RA. However, it did improve mood, quality of life and overall functioning.

• Yoga combines physical postures, breathing exercises and meditation. Some small studies have found that yoga improves physical function and helps relieve tender and swollen joints.

People with RA should practice yoga cautiously to avoid placing too much stress on affected joints.

• Fish oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids, the primary fat found in cold-water fish (such as salmon, tuna, herring, sardines and mackerel), which have anti-inflammatory properties. You can consume more omega-3 fatty acids by eating more fish or by taking fish oil supplements. Studies have found that fish oil supplements may help with tender joints and stiffness.

They may also reduce the need for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

However, fish oil supplements may increase the risk for bleeding, especially in people who take medications to prevent clotting.

So, if you are taking any such medications, check with your doctor before starting to take fish oil supplements.

With each of these alternative therapies some people did not have improved results. Unfortunately, your doctor has no way of knowing if you’ll be one of the people who benefits. So, if an approach that helps some people has little or no risk, it might be worth trying.

Adoptive parents are ‘real parents’ Dr. Wallace: I’m 14 and have a big problem. I live with adoptive parents who are very strict, yet I know they love me. They limit the time I can talk to friends on the phone, limit and monitor my television viewing, and they make me go to summer school.

But what bugs me the most is that they refuse to allow me to spend much time with my best friends. I know they are not angels, but they are not really bad. They sometimes smoke marijuana and drink alcohol, and their vocabulary is rough, but they are loyal friends and would do anything for me.

My adoptive parents give me a good home and feed me well, and I’m thankful. But I think my real mom would give me more freedom. I get to see her once a month, and I love her a lot, and she also tells me that she loves me when we visit. I have told her that I feel like I’m in jail living with my adoptive parents, but she keeps telling me that they are good people and for me to follow their rules.

I keep asking my real mom to let me live with her, but she says it’s impossible because I legally belong to them. It’s like I’m a slave that belongs to them. Is it possible that if I talk my adoptive parents into giving me up, that I legally could go back with my real mother where I belong? – Nameless, Providence, Rhode Island Dear Nameless: Your birth mother knew that placing you in a home with adoptive parents who would love you and would do their best to see that you turn out to be a respectable young lady would be the best thing for you. With their guidance, it appears that is what will happen.

Research is finding that most suicides are the result of depression. Research further shows that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain that first shows up during the teen years.

That is what happened to my son. At age 16, he began to suffer from depression. He received the very best medical care and therapy at that time. Unfortunately, he committed suicide when he was 24. Today, there are new medications available that might have helped my son.

This week we have looked at pairs of deals in which a small rearrangement of the cards transforms the right line of play or defense.

Look at this restyling of yesterday’s deal. One of West’s hearts has been given to East. How does that affect the result in four spades after the defense begins with three rounds of hearts?

As I mentioned yesterday, North might have raised spades with only three-card support when holding a minimum opening bid with 3-4-5-1 or 3-1-5-4 distribution. So South rebid three clubs to leave open three no-trump and four spades as possible game contracts. Here North, with a good club holding and four trumps, jumped to four spades. He hoped that his weak trumps would not prove fatal.

South must try to hold his trump losers to one by twice leading toward the hand with the two honors. Yesterday, with hearts splitting 4-4, that line worked perfectly. Today, though, if East is wearing a prescription pair of glasses, he can defeat the contract.

When declarer plays a spade from the board at trick five, East must immediately grab the trick with his ace and lead another heart. As you can see, this affects a trump promotion. If South ruffs low, West overruffs; or if South ruffs high, East will eventually gain a trump trick.

Sectionals are the obvious space-saver and offer more flexibility with layout than the traditional setup of a sofa and two chairs. They’re the more frugal option, too, if you employ the logic that one piece of furniture is probably cheaper than three. So why do so many of us default to the sofa?

It’s possible we’re daunted by the myriad configuration options that come with picking out sectionals, or bugged by the thought that some unlucky

guest won’t have a back cushion. Or maybe it’s pure laziness: Squaring off a sofa and two chairs is easier than getting creative, after all.

But designers are quick to sing the sectional’s praises.

“Whatever your hesitations are, get over them,” says Liz Levin, a designer whose firm, Liz Levin Interiors, is based in Bethesda, Maryland. “Especially if you’re in a small space, it’s probably exactly the solution you’re looking for.”

Arlington, Virginia, designer Nicole Lanteri agrees. “The biggest misconception is that all sectionals are big,” she said.

The Plaza small sectional sofa costs $10,379, and is found on Hive Modern. ($499-$799 per piece, www.cb2.com); she puts the three pieces together into a wrap-around when she has company and manages to seat eight to 10 people on it. At other times, she breaks it up into a sofa and two chairs.

These days, most mainstream retailers such as Room & Board and Pottery Barn offer sectionals that can be fully customized, from the fabric to the feet.

“People get tired of living in condos because they feel like they want more space,” she said, “but if you buy furniture that works with you, that you can adjust to suit different occasions, like movie nights or parties, you can do a lot more with a little space.”

Once you’ve decided to take the plunge and shop for a sectional, you need to determine how much room you

have to work with. Because sectionals don’t need so much breathing room, you probably have more space to work with than you think.

“Modern sectionals tend to have clean, sleek lines,” Levin says, “and you can push them right up against the wall because the chaise usually sticks out and gives the layout some variation.”

As a general guideline, Levin recommends choosing an eight- or nine-foot sofa with a 60-to-72-inch chaise. Anything smaller, she said, can feel cramped and hinder your odds of fitting a practical coffee table. For very small spaces, Lanteri, 36, recommends sectionals that are about 36 to 40 inches deep. Target’s Zuo Axiom sectional in Ash Gray ($1,399, www.target.com) is narrow without seeming uncomfortable and stiff.

“But, if you measure the footprint and think about your layout, they actually give you more wiggle room.”

The modern sectional, which has a low, boxy frame, modular design and sleek silhouette, became popular in the 1950s during the mid-century modern movement and was popularized by Charles and Ray Eames. Although it certainly influenced style trends, it had an even greater impact on traditional furniture layouts.

While it’s gone through its share of trends over the years (remember those marshmallow-looking sofas from the ‘80s?) it’s still a go-to secret weapon among designers who want to do more with less. Levin says sectionals are particularly handy for clients in small spaces who like to entertain. A sofa and two chairs can make the room feel cluttered and closed off, but a sectional lets the room breathe. The key, she said, is to make sure at least once piece of the sectional is backless.

“I almost never use sectionals in which every piece has a back because it starts to feel like house arrest,” she said. “Keep the flow open.”

When Lanteri moved into her condo in Arlington, she wanted a sectional that offered some flexibility with layout. She bought the Lotus sectional from CB2

Sectionals with fold-out sofa beds can come in handy for guests but often have skirting at the base. If the extra bed is more of a convenience than a necessity, consider a slightly wider sectional that can double as a bed when needed.

Joybird’s Eliot sectional ($2,999, www. joybird.com), is easily crash-worthy but has sleek mid-century modern lines and button-tufted cushions for a dose of style.

The most popular sectional configuration for small rooms is a two-piece L-shaped sofa, which consists of a leftor right-facing arm on one end and a chaise on the other. Some retailers, such as West Elm, offer a style of sofa with the option to buy the pieces together or separately. But be sure to crunch a few numbers and sketch out different arrangements. In some cases, buying a pre-arranged sectional is cheaper than ordering separate pieces, but you may want the freedom to orchestrate the sectional exactly as you like. Most companies, such as West Elm, keep it simple: The brand’s two-piece Crosby Sectional in Pebble Weave consists of a chaise and sofa that, together or separately, will cost $2,298 to $2,498, depending on the color.

If that opens up some room in your budget, buy a pair of colorful throw pillows to toss on top. Says Levin: “You’ve already decluttered the space by removing a few pieces of furniture, so go ahead and spice things up.”

Today’s Hawaiian style departs from tiki kitsch

By VERN YIP Special to The Washington Post Now that it’s spring – at least the calendar says it is – we can begin visually warming up our nests by employing one of today’s biggest emerging home design trends: Hawaiian style.

Up until 15 years ago, I considered Hawaii a virtual second home. At least once a year, my family would escape winter’s grasp and gather on the islands of Oahu or Maui to defrost in the sun.

Back then, Hawaiian style had a kitsch factor that more easily lent itself to souvenir snow globes and coffee mugs than to serious home decor. Think Santa donning a Hawaiian shirt on a Christmas ornament instead of a chic, decorative throw pillow.

All that seems to have changed, however, with style-setters from Michael Kors to India Hicks proclaiming their love of island life and the associated aesthetic.

So a few months ago, I paid the island of Maui a visit to explore this new trend.

What I discovered is that today’s Hawaiian style – from my rented digs (the elegant Coral Gardens in Makena) to the proliferation of uber chic stores and restaurants – is more sophisticated and usable while still retaining much of its original charm. Without losing its distinctive flavor, it’s now capable of integrating into a much wider assortment of decor styles.

Hawaiian style today still has a foundation in vibrant island color and the love of prints but balances it out with calming, neutral tones and the use of chic, natural materials that ultimately makes it more timeless and livable.

Although you can’t rush Mother Nature along any faster than she ultimately wants to go, you can fool your senses into thinking you’ve left winter’s dreariness behind for a Hawaiian island retreat by following some of these easy steps: • Embrace warm island color: From a vibrant palette of exotic flora and fauna to the turquoise-colored ocean and sky, Hawaii naturally bursts with a wide spectrum of rich hues. On my recent trip to research Hawaiian design, I could almost count rainbows by the dozen, with each turned corner revealing a bigger and better one.

Today, Hawaiian style has a foundation in vibrant island colors, balanced with calming, neutral tones. A bedroom (pictured) smartly injects accessories that can be easily changed for a quick transformation.

After a winter season dominated by every gray shade imaginable, it’s understandable why this particular trend seems to be taking hold. Instead of subdued pastels, think bold, warm colors that command attention but are still easily found within nature’s palette.

From the warm yellow-orange tones of papayas and mangos to the vibrant orange-reds of the hibiscus and coral, every shade of warm orange and red serves as a capable tool for injecting island life into your home.

Warm blues inspired by the turquoise Pacific waters make a natural companion for these colors, along with the myriad warm greens found in fronds and the other abundant vegetation. To keep it timeless and sophisticated, limit these warm Hawaiian colors to easily changed-

out pillows, throws, artwork and decorative accents.

Pair with mid-to-light-toned neutrals and whites on walls, rugs and large upholstered pieces.

By the time the sweltering summer months arrive, you can easily change out your Hawaiian-inspired elements in case you start developing a case of island fever.

• Employ nature-inspired prints: Although I’m a fanatic for clean and straight lines, Hawaiian style seems much more deeply rooted in the natural and organic lines of nature’s bounty. Home decor textiles sporting exotic flowers, free-form geometrics and dramatic palms have been enormously popular and are abundantly available to help easily transform your living room into an

island lanai.

To really get it right, go for larger-scaled prints (in warm, vibrant tones, of course) to create a graphic statement that instantly lends character to your space. And limit these large-scaled prints to one or two locations to avoid a calamitous sensory overload. Not everything in a room should scream for your attention.

For these prints and colors to endure in your space, there needs to be a clear understanding of who the star player is and who is happily serving in the supporting (and very critical) roles.
