Instructor gets 500-hour yoga certification Park District Dish Kari Miller Kathy Freedlund is a wellknown figure at the Batavia Park District. She has been an instructor for 27 years and began teaching yoga at the park district 16 years ago. Last month, Freedlund received her 500-hour certification from the National Association of Certified Yoga Teachers.

Freedlund became a fitness instructor because of her interest in health and exercise.

She enjoys being active and is a strong advocate for getting fit.

“I like to keep moving,” she said. “We only get one body. It’s not like a car that we can trade in when it fails.”

Over the years, Freedlund’s classes have grown in popularity, and several of her fitness participants have been taking her classes for all 27 years. She offers a wide range of classes to suit individuals of all skill levels, including Gentle Chair Yoga, Relax & Renew Yoga and Flow Yoga.

Freedlund also teaches Shape & Tone and “Pole”ates, which combines Nordic walking and pilates.

“We need to keep in mind that we are all different,” Freedlund said. “It’s not about trying to keep up with anyone else. It’s about building towards a goal and working safely to your own ability.”

It took 15 years, but receiving her 500-hour certification was a huge milestone and one she was incredibly excited to receive. After all these years, Freedlund is still learning and growing as an instructor.

“I have found that the more you learn about yoga, the less you realize you know,” Freedlund said. “It’s a lifelong process, and I will continue the learning journey as long as I can.”

Sho-Deen buys Mill Race Inn site Developer hasn’t decided what to do with property

GENEVA – The Shodeen family has bought the historic Mill Race Inn, a spokesman announced Tuesday.

Future use of the land has not yet been determined, according to a news release, but Sho-Deen, a Geneva-based developer, recognizes any potential development means meeting the challenges of flooding by the nearby Fox River, according to a prepared statement.

The historic restaurant at 4 E. State St., Geneva, closed in January 2011. The Mill Race Inn began as a blacksmith shop in 1842, but eventually turned into a tea room in the 1930s. Its name was taken from the gristmill where water diverted from the river turned the mill’s wheels, called a “mill race.”

The bank-owned property offered 15,000 square feet of restaurant space with seating for 400. The 1.3-acre site originally was listed for $2.2 million. The asking price was reduced to $1.8 million, then to $1.1 million, then to $890,000 in May 2013, according to broker information.

The Shodeens did not disclose the sale price, and no other information was available.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said he welcomed the opportunity to partner with the Shodeen family and Sho-Deen Inc. “on yet another signature project that will beautify the east bank of the Fox River.”

Burns said he could not say what plans the Shodeens might have for the property.

The Geneva Committee of the Whole this week recommended approval of a study to create a new tax increment financing district which would include the Mill Race property.

A TIF district is a development tool where tax dollars are diverted for public improvements, such as roads and sewers, as well as other purposes as the law allows.

Once established, a district’s property value is frozen, and anything generated from the improvements is the tax increment.

City officials said they sought the TIF district study to assist with the redevelopment of six significant properties, identified as those at 4 E. State St., 113 E. State, 122 E. State, 130 E. State, 206 E. State and 106 N. Bennett St. “It might end up in a TIF,” Burns said of the Mill Race property. “That’s a three- to four-month process.”

As to whether the building, now vacant for three years, would have to be torn down, Burns could not say.

“There are historically significant parts we believe can be repurposed,” Burns said.

“My position has been, if you want a demolition permit, I’ll give it to you tomorrow.”

Joe Stanton, a local developer who put in an unsuccessful bid for the property last year, praised the purchase and what it will mean for Geneva.

“They have done some phenomenal projects for Geneva,” Stanton said of the Shodeens. “Whatever it is, it will be something Geneva will be proud of and benefit from.

They always end up with a great project when they’re done. It will be a tremendous boost for Geneva.”

Library regroups after latest referendum defeat

Taylor: ‘People don’t think their vote counts’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – After a resounding referendum defeat on March 18, Sugar Grove Public Library officials are regrouping.

“Of course, all of us are very disappointed,” library board member Bill Durrenberger said. “We are in the process right now of reviewing what do we do now. We have not made any decisions [about] where do we go from here. Everything is up in the air at this point in time.”

The district’s 11th rate increase request was defeated.

There were 1,688 no votes and 691 yes votes, according to unofficial results posted on the county clerk’s website.

Library officials had warned the library would be faced with cuts if it did not get a rate increase. Durrenberger said the defeat was not unexpected.

“What does surprise me was the margin by which it

got voted down, 69 percent,” Durrenberger said. “I think what the people are saying to us government servants, ‘We don’t want our taxes raised pretty much for anything.’ It’s not just with the library, but the public concern about real estate taxes, and that is what made our task so hard.”

Durrenberger said the margin of the loss hurt.

“That is the environment we are in. No one wants their taxes raised,” Durrenberger said. “That [the vote] was more than two no votes for every yes vote. That was a big disappointment to me.”

The Sugar Grove Public Library is operating on as small a budget as it possibly can living within its means and trying to keep the building open as much as possible, he said.

“We have done a good job, and a lot of people who recognize that still don’t want their taxes raised,” Durrenberger said. “It’s not anything we have done or haven’t done.”

Kane County Board member talks about election

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kane County Board member Melisa Taylor said she expected the Republican primary for District 5 would be close.

“It was [a close race] the first time I ran,” she said Monday, nearly a week after the March 18 election.

Unofficial results from the Aurora Election Commission and Kane County Clerk show 272 votes separated Taylor from challenger Bill Lenert. Lenert beat Taylor 1,558 to 1,286, according to unofficial numbers.

“People don’t think their vote counts,” Taylor said.

“This is where it does count.”

No Democratic candidate ran in the primary for District 5, which includes Sugar Grove, Big Rock and part of Aurora.

Taylor, Melisa w h o runs Taylor the Between Friends Food Pantry, said she is unsure what her political future holds or if she would run as an independent in the Nov. 4 general election.

“I don’t know,” she said.

She did, however, say she won’t be afraid to bring up issues during her last months on the County Board.

“I want to make sure all County Board members know information I know so they can make an informed decision when I’m gone,” Taylor said.

Fahnestock said the selection was a culmination of many people’s efforts. He told board members to exercise patience, however, as implementation is expected to be an 18-month project.

“This won’t happen overnight,” Fahnestock said.

Brown said costs should be known after negotiations are finished. The original estimated cost was about $12.6 million.

“I’m pleased to say we’re going to be under budget [from] that initial amount,” Brown said.

The proposed budgets for fiscal years 2014 to 2018 add up to just under $10 million, according to numbers he presented.

GENEVA – The group working to select a new court case management system for Kane County expects to soon ask the County Board for approval of its preferred vendor.

Tuesday, Kane County Judge F. Keith Brown and Chief Information Officer Roger Fahnestock told the Committee of the Whole that the next steps in the process include contract negotiations with Tyler Technologies, a publicly traded company whose court software is used throughout the country.

The County Board should vote on it in May or June, Brown said.

“We’re purchasing a product I know will be here 10 years from now, 20 years from

now,” he said.

Kane County officials for years have discussed improving the county’s courts-related computer software to allow the various offices serving the courts to better share the documents that circulate whenever a person is charged with a crime or files suit.

Chief Judge Judith Brawka voiced her support of the new system.

“The public demands that we have all the technology that they are capable of using,” she said. “We are very committed to making this a good investment for the people of Kane County.”

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, participated in site visits during the selection process and said he is “fully on board” with recommending Tyler Technologies.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A significant technology upgrade won approval at Monday night’s Kaneland School District 302 Board meeting, though board members said they wished there were more specifics about the plan.

Board members voted, 6-1, to approve the purchase of devices for students at a cost of $225,000. The plan is to bring the ratio to one device for every three students in the district, Kaneland officials said.

Board member Tony Valente voted against the proposal. He said there is “no specific plan to specifically use these devices in specific ways.” He also said he feared the cost eventually would be more than $225,000 because the devices likely would need to be repaired or replaced.

He wasn’t alone in that sentiment. Board member Peter Lopatin said he voted for

the plan because “I do think it’s necessary,” but he said the technology budget likely would continue to take up a higher percentage of the district’s budget that “would, in fact, pay for quite a few teachers.”

Board member Gale Pavlak said she also supported the plan but said: “I agree with Tony. I would like to see what the plan is. I would like a little more information.”

The plan calls for the district to purchase 679 student devices – 91 iPad minis and 205 Chromebooks for elementary students; 147 Chromebooks for middle school students; and 236 Chromebooks for high school students.

District officials have talked about how improved technology was important to students’ learning experiences.

Though Kaneland recently opted not to continue with a plan for a blended-learning consortium of school districts, officials said online learning is essential. For instance, officials said some companies providing content for Common Core no longer are making textbooks or pa-

per options.

According to a school district memo, officials said “as we review materials adoption for 2014-2015, we have found for the first time that the best Common Core materials … are fully online and would require class sets of devices, such as Chromebooks, in order to implement them.”

In another vote, board members opted not to raise parking fees at Kaneland High School, and they tabled discussion on whether to increase the fee for hot lunches. One proposal was to raise parking fees by $20 – from $180 to $200 – but board members were opposed to that. As far as hot lunches, district officials said the fees must be raised to be compliant with the Illinois State Board of Education.

Currently, they said, the fee of $2.15 is 50 cents below the compliance rate.

Board members sought more information about whether the district could implement a fee increase in smaller increments, as well as what the ramifications would be if the district were not in compliance.

Schools OK $1.5M in capital improvements

School board members voted 7-0 in favor of approving the plan, which is for Batavia School District 101’s 2014-15 school year. Before the vote,

discussion focused heavily on the addition of staffing.

The plan includes the hiring of three instructional coaches for teacher professional development and implementation of technology, one additional elementary assistant principal and four additional employees in program support.

Chris Virelli, a HooverWood Elementary School parent, was one of a couple people

to speak to the board during the beginning of the regular monthly meeting. He opposed hiring additional coaches.

“Strive to spend less than the approved annual levy increase,” Virelli said to board members. “Prove to your constituents that you are not just a rubber stamp for the administration.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Cadence Health will host its second stroke support group meeting from 4 to 5 p.m. today at its medical offices, 2900 Foxfield Road, St. Charles.

Nurse practitioner Anne Lindstrom, who facilitates the program along with another nurse, Laura Pittner, said a dozen people came to the first meeting last month.

“It was a great turnout because it was about 30 below [zero] that day,” Lindstrom said.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted by a clot or a bleed, and it is the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Stroke is really a life-changing experience for both the patient and the family,” Lindstrom said. “When you are in the hospital, there is a lot of support. And then you get to go home – you’re like a newborn baby. ‘OK, what do I do now?’”

Having a support group creates a place for patients, spouses and caregivers to come together and talk about their experiences.

“Every stroke is different,” Lindstrom said. “Two people can have the exact same stroke in the same place, but with differing symptoms.”

At their first meetings, Lindstrom said she and Pittner asked families and

patients to tell them what they wanted. In particular, some who attended had just had strokes, and others had strokes years ago and were able to talk about their recoveries.

“They were really able to support each other,” Lindstrom said.

At today’s session, an expert is scheduled to speak about aphasia – one of the effects of stroke – and then open it up to the group for discussion, Lindstrom said. Aphasia

is a communication disorder frequently caused by a stroke that damages the area of the brain that involves speech and language, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

The support group is free and open to anyone who wants to attend, and meetings will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. every fourth Wednesday, Lindstrom said. For information, call the stroke program at 630-933-3278 or for hearing impaired, 630933-4833.

The parents there are concerned about class sizes at their school and question why more teachers can’t be hired at the elementary level instead of the instructional coaches.

There is actually a surplus of elementary teachers, but the district has decided to keep them, said Steve Pearce, assistant superintendent of

human resources, during the meeting.

Pearce and other district officials talked about the benefits of having more dedicated instructional coaches for teachers and assistant principals.

The $1.5 million cost for the plan is an increase of $400,000 from the previous year, said Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent of finance.

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Police Department has obtained charges against a North Aurora man in connection with a February armed robbery.

Dwayne K. Smith, 22, of the 700 block of East Victoria Lane, North Aurora, has been charged with one count of armed robbery, a Class X felony, and one count of armed robbery with a firearm, a Class X felony.

The armed robbery occurred at 12:15 a.m. Feb. 5 after Smith responded to a man’s Craigslist ad for a MacBook Pro laptop, according to police. Smith pulled a handgun on the man and his brother in the 900 block of Oak Street and took the laptop and a cellphone before he fled, police said.

Detectives were able to

recover the stolen laptop at a pawn shop in Kane County, North Aurora Deputy Police Chief David Fisher said Tuesday.

In late February, the Glen Ellyn Police Department recovered the cellphone while executing a search warrant Dwayne at the home of K. Smith one of Smith’s relatives in West Chicago. Police entered the home to look for evidence from similar Craigslist-related armed robberies that occurred in Glen Ellyn.

Smith is accused of answering two separate Craigslist ads in Glen Ellyn that each advertised a camera lens. The first seller met with Smith at about 9:45 p.m. Feb. 5 in the 500 block of Roosevelt Road. When Smith displayed

a handgun and tried to take the lens, the seller pulled the lens away and Smith ran, according to a Glen Ellyn police news release.

Smith met the second seller at about 8 p.m. Feb. 6 in the 300 block of Roosevelt Road and grabbed the lens for sale.

When Smith saw the seller running after him, he told the seller he had a gun, pointed an unidentified object and left the scene.

Smith is being held at the DuPage County Jail on $15,100 bond. If Smith were to post bond in DuPage County, he would then be transferred to Kane County, Fisher said.

Fisher urged residents to be cautious when using the Craigslist website to purchase or sell items.

“Meet them in a public place, try to do it during the day and don’t go alone, whether you’re a seller or a buyer,” Fisher said.

He was a real estate broker for over 50 years. He owned four real estate offices (Village Realty) in Villa Park, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn and St. Charles, as well as owning and operating a real estate school in St. Charles. He remained active

in real estate even toward the end of his life.

Mr. Johnson was a past master of Masonic Lodge 1113 A.F. & A.M. in Villa Park, and a member of the Chicago Medinah Temple, admitted in 1972.

He was president of the Villa Park Lions Club, and was also active in the St. Charles Lions Club. He showed his love for others by volunteering his musical talents playing the banjo and mandolin with the Bunkhouse Boys, a country and western band he formed with some close friends. The band played for nonprofit organizations, fundraisers and political functions, but his favorite was playing for blind veterans at the Wheaton VFW Hall for decades.

There will be a celebration of Mr. Johnson’s life from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29, in Naples, Fla., at the Berkshire Lakes Clubhouse, and from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in Wheaton at the Wheaton VFW. 8OBITUARIES OLIVIA GILMORE Born: April 16, 1923 Died: March 25, 2014 ST. CHARLES – Olivia S. “Ollie” Gilmore, 90, of St. Charles, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, March 25, 2014, at her home. She was born April 16, 1923, the daughter of Leo and Margaret Pauling.

Ollie grew up near Cloverdale, Ill., where she attended St. Isidore’s Catholic School. She married Clarence (Jake) Gilmore on April 16, 1942. A year later, they welcomed their first son and soon moved to a farm west of St. Charles. It was here she raised their family and enjoyed hosting many family get-togethers.

In 1976, they moved to a house that Jake built a mile down the road. She always loved having children around her, as each summer her grandchildren would get a few days of quality time with their grandma. She was a wonderful mom, grandma and great-grandma who will be greatly missed. She was a proud member of St. Patrick Catholic Church for almost 70 years.

She is survived by seven children, Gary (Jane) Gilmore of Elgin, John

(Louise) Gilmore of Rockton, Donna Kane of Aurora, Steven (Leslie) Gilmore of Trego, Wis., Gail (Andrew) Frasz of Geneva, Lori (William) Poczekaj of Maple Park and Scott (Jennifer) Gilmore of St. Charles; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sistersin-law, Corrine and Betty Pauling; brother-in-law, Roger (Renie) Seddon; and many nieces and nephews.

ST. CHARLES – Kane County Animal Control and prosecutors are seeking a $45,000 security fund to be posted for the care and feeding of animals impounded from a petting zoo whose owner was charged with animal cruelty.

A hearing on the issue is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Kane County Branch Court.

In court papers filed late last week, animal control officials said they have incurred nearly $25,000 in expenses since impounding 94 animals from a petting zoo at a farm in Hampshire Township earlier this month.

Officials projected an additional cost of $20,151 for 13 days of care for the 31 remaining animals – including miniature horses,

ponies, donkeys and two goats – either not given up or forfeited, but still in the care of animal control.

Elgin resident Stacy Fiebelkorn, who was charged with animal cruelty and violating an Stacy owner’s duty, Fiebelkorn both misdemeanors, gave up rabbits and poultry and all but two goats.

A judge ruled she had to forfeit alpacas and llamas, but not the horses, donkeys and the pair of goats, which are still being cared for by animal control.

The 102-page filing lists the cost of boarding, hay, feed, shavings, vet care and labor, averaging $1,550.12 per day for the 31 animals.

Tegeler and Kostelny both are seeking a vacancy to be left by Circuit Judge Karen Simpson, who plans to retire Oct. 6.

Unofficial results show there are 6,216 votes for Tegeler and 6,210 for Kostelny, according to the Kane County Clerk and the Aurora Election Commission. On Tuesday, the clerk listed seven additional votes for Kostelny and three for Tegeler, up from the previous totals. As of Monday, Tegeler had a 10-vote lead over Kostelny.

Kenneth Shepro, an attorney representing Tegeler, said the county clerk’s updated numbers show a 78-vote lead for Tegeler, and the Aurora Election Commission’s election-night totals show a 72vote lead in the city for Kostelny. The numbers are from two separate voting authorities.

“When you net them together, Tegeler’s lead is now six votes,” Shepro said.

It would appear 28 mail-in ballots were issued, but unreturned as yet in the county clerk’s jurisdiction, Shepro said.

There are 10 remaining Republican ballots that could affect the outcome of the race, Aurora Election Commission officials said. The Aurora Election Commission also does not update its online results or release additional ballot results from mail-in, provisional and grace-period voters until April 1.

The club on Feb. 27 and March 1 hosted its fifth Labor for Lazarus House event, which involved working on cars and then donating the cost of the labor.

Straiker said one of the ways he tries to connect with students is to be real with them and avoid being somebody’s he’s not. Katie Bradac, a Geneva Middle School North art teacher, tries to personalize her assignments and in some cases have the students write an explanation of their pieces.

“I think I connect with them in a different way because they are more vulnerable in their artwork,” Bradac said of her students. “I get to see a different side of them.”

Teachers and students agreed that there can be limitations to connecting purely through standard classroom instruction.

Seelentag, 16, said it helps when there are interactive activities at school where everyone has the opportunity to share. That way the students learn about their teachers, and vice versa, he said.

For the students not involved in clubs or invested in class, teachers like Heim still try to connect with students through their interests. She gave the example of asking students what music they listen to on their headphones during passing periods.

The same goes for senior Rachel Radtke and Batavia High School teacher Marnie Heim.

These are just two examples of Kane County students who have forged positive relationships with their teachers. Making connections with students is something teachers work on throughout the school year.

Educators said students who feel a sense of belonging are more likely to be invested in their schoolwork.

School officials also want to make sure that students can go to teachers if they ever are struggling with personal issues. That’s one message St. Charles North High School emphasized this year during its Suicide Prevention Week in February. An assembly planned for that week included a video featuring staff members talking about how they care for students.

As an English teacher and Batavia High School Key Club faculty adviser, Heim makes sure her students know she cares about them and is accessible beyond the classroom.

“They can always get in contact with me; they know how to reach me,” Heim said.

One year, a Key Club member did reach out to Heim about a friend’s eating disorder. Heim had her speak with a school counselor and the friend received the help she needed.

Students said they become closest to teachers whom they also see through extracurricular activities. The club environment definitely helps, said Straiker, who is the St. Charles East Auto Club adviser and a technical

arah King teaches Spanish at Haines Middle School in St. Charles, so perhaps it isn’t surprising that the ability to speak that language has opened doors for her. She tells students in her classes that it could do the same for them.

“I tell all of my kids at the beginning of the year – every job I ever have been offered has been contingent on being bilingual,” she said.

She said learning to speak the language fluently is greatly helped by an earlier start, and for the first time this year, all students at St. Charles School District 303 are able to start that process as early as sixth grade.

Middle school Spanish is offered at all public schools in the Tri-Cities, with officials at Geneva and Batavia saying the middle school Spanish option has been in place for more than a decade.

In the fall, Kaneland will join that list. Kaneland School District 302 voted earlier this month to move forward with middle school Spanish, and it will be offered to seventh- and eighth-graders as part of a two-year program.

The two-year program will comprise Spanish I. Students who take Spanish in seventh grade would not be obligated to take it in eighth grade.

Eighth-graders would have access to the program in the first year as well.

Also, Kaneland plans to add as many as two full-time Spanish teachers at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

Kaneland opportunity Though the program arrives too late for her benefit, Kaneland senior Emily Laudont said she is thrilled to see middle school Spanish be offered.

Previously, the district offered middle school Spanish as a scaled-down, nine-week exploratory class that provided a glimpse of the subject.

She said that helped spark an interest. Laudont said she went on to take four years of high school Spanish and embraced it so much that she hopes to become a Spanish teacher.

“Once I found out I really liked it – now how can I use it?” she said. “It does make

you more marketable.”

Michelle Jurcenko, chair of the world languages department at Kaneland High School, expects strong interest and participation in the program. She said 50 percent of high school students were enrolled in a Spanish course in the current school year, and 7 percent were enrolled in a French course.

Jurcenko said a fifth year of Spanish can provide a big benefit to students, especially in improving speaking skills.

“In the fifth year, you can really start building on what you have developed in the first four years,” she said.

Erika Schlichter, the Kaneland School District’s di-

rector of educational services for those in sixth through 12th grade, said this is an opportunity that “is truly new for Kaneland.” The exploratory class hasn’t been offered since 2009, and she said even that offered only a taste.

“It would have been very introductory,” Schlichter said.

The program enables students to take a fifth year, and it also offers flexibility for others who can take Spanish earlier. For some, it allows them to take enough high school Spanish that they could be exempt from a Spanish I course in college.

And, Schlichter said, it puts Kaneland in line with neigh-

“Over 60 percent of our students take Spanish at the middle school,” O’Neil said.

King said interest is strong for sixth-graders in foreign language classes at Haines Middle School in St. Charles.

She said there are seven sections of foreign language in sixth grade at the school – six for Spanish and one for French. Also, she said there are nine sections in seventh grade (two French and seven Spanish) and eight sections in eighth grade (one French and seven Spanish).

“Participation has been amazing,” King said. She said there are four full-time Spanish teachers and one full-time French teacher at the school.

She said the students seem to be embracing the opportunity.

“They are being challenged in a way they’ve never learned before,” she said.

King said starting to learn the language earlier allows students to “become more fluent at a younger age.” She said younger students are more willing to take risks and embrace challenges.

“The kids are so willing to try anything,” she said.

Post-layoff tailspin distressingly common

By CATHERINE RAMPELL The Washington Post Say it with me – the longterm unemployed are not lazy. Nor are they coddled, hammocked or enjoying a coordinated, taxpayer-funded vacation. They are, however, extremely unlucky, and getting unluckier by the day.

A new Brookings study that tracks the fates of those unlucky workers who don’t manage to find stable new jobs in their first few weeks of unemployment suggests that this post-layoff tailspin is distressingly common.

It already was known that the longer workers have been out of a job, the lower their chance of finding work in the coming month. The Brookings paper – by the former Obama administration economist

Alan Krueger and his Princeton colleagues Judd Cramer and David Cho – took this analysis a step further. What about (gulp) these workers’ longer-run prospects?

It turns out that from 2008 to 2012, only one in 10 people who were already long-term unemployed in a given month had returned to “steady, full-time employment” by the time government surveyors checked in on them a little more than a year later.

“Steady” in this case means that they were working for at least four consecutive months.

And the other nine in 10 workers? They still were out of work, toiling in part-time or transitory jobs or had dropped out of the labor force altogether.

In other words, the vast majority of people caught in

long spells of joblessness do not find work again, or at the very least have trouble hanging on to whatever replacement jobs they had initially thanked their lucky stars for.

It’s unclear why unemployment becomes increasingly self-perpetuating. Perhaps it is merely selection bias – that is, the most desirable jobless workers get picked off early, leaving the less desirable workers behind to rack up more and more weeks of unemployment. But the Princeton researchers had difficulty detecting obvious differences between the short-term unemployed and the long-term unemployed.

Such demographic similarities suggest that something about the experience of joblessness tarnishes workers’ marketability.

Workers’ skills may deteriorate as they spend more time on their couches instead of in cubicles or on work sites.

Professional networks might also fray, which is especially damaging for those in sales.

One implication of the Brookings research is that policymakers should have done more to prevent the short-term jobless from falling into long-term joblessness in the first place. Of course, time machines are rarely an effective policy tool.

Which is why many economists have been hoping that a strengthening recovery would be enough to help the nation’s four million long-term jobless workers. As demand picks up, many analysts have declared, businesses would have no choice but to absorb workers with more pockmarked

resumes.

Alas, the Brookings paper makes that deus ex machina appear unlikely. The authors looked at the reemployment chances for long-term unemployed workers around the country and found that these workers do not fare substantially better in states with booming job markets (e.g., North Dakota) than in states with struggling job markets (e.g., Michigan).

Which means that even as the overall U.S. economy improves, those already deeply scarred by the financial crisis are unlikely to share in the bounty.

North toughs out win on freezing night

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – Players on the Neuqua Valley bench huddled under blankets during Tuesday night’s girls soccer match against St. Charles North, contested under freezing conditions.

North’s reserves kept to their program ritual of standing throughout the match, blankets nowhere to be found.

Whether the show of solidarity factored in to North’s 1-0 victory can’t be substantiated, but the North Stars showed great mental toughness throughout in picking up their first win of the season.

“The tradition was started I think 14 years ago, and they pretty much stand the whole time and cheer everybody on,” North coach Ruth Vostal said of her bench. “Which, today, was exciting because I think we could use that motivation for the girls that were out there.”

The temperature hovered in the 20s throughout the match – not factoring in wind chill – on a day when almost every other outdoor sporting event was canceled. But North (1-1) and Neuqua (0-2)

“We’re all about the mental toughness and just finishing for each other,” Macchia said.

“We had to battle through it. We’re out here suffering

through the same thing so we had to put in the work, and finish it for each other.”

Macchia scored her first varsity goal midway through the second half in what turned out to be the night’s lone score.

With Neuqua goalkeeper Hannah Parrish out of position after coming out to challenge an initial shot, Macchia poked the ball in with 20:02 to play.

“We have to clean that up,” Neuqua coach Joe Moreau said. “We can’t make a save and give up a rebound and then not clear it out.”

In her first season on varsity, Macchia said she’s enthused simply to be part of North’s tradition-rich program.

“I was really excited to be part of a team like with, with the previous years of hard work and dedication that these girls put into it,” Macchia said. “It was just exciting to be a part of it and to help get a win for my team tonight.”

Less than four minutes before Macchia scored, Neuqua (0-2) just missed taking a lead as North Stars goalkeeper Shelby Stitz fought off Katie Ciesiulka’s blast, deflecting it off the crossbar and out of play to lead to a fruitless Wildcats corner kick.

“I’ve seen her make two great saves already this season so I think great things are expected,” Vostal said of Stitz.

Really, I just started watching what I ate and every day for most of the offseason I’d go to the gym, do stuff on my own apart from practice for personal motivation, I guess, so that’s pretty much what I did all summer and fall this offseason.

Did you think you’d start the season fast like that?

Actually, yeah, I was really looking forward to it because I feel like last season, it wasn’t my best season. I was really working hard this whole offseason. I knew we’d have a strong team.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some difficult homework, who would it be and why?

Definitely Ali Grimm. She’s a person I feel like is there for everyone.

She’s a leader, she’s actually our captain this year, and she’s a great role model actually, and she’s honestly, like, the nicest person I’ve met.

What did you do to kind of amp up your training?

What part of your game do you think is most dangerous offensively?

I’d have to say foot skills. I think I have pretty good foot skills and speed. I’ve gotten faster. It’s helped me a lot actually.

Yet players somehow retained their resolve, and North’s defense showed major improvement from the

team’s season opener, a 3-2 loss to Conant. Senior defender Kathleen Murphy notched a key clearance to avert trouble as Neuqua looked to tie the score with about 17 minutes to play.

“The elements are what they are, and we have we to overcome that,” Vostal said.

“We work a lot in practices in making situations difficult for us physically and mentally.”

Vostal – who played collegiately at Michigan – was asked to recall the last match

she was part of as cold as Tuesday’s. The question brought to mind memories of her career as a standout at St. Charles High.

“When I was a player, we were playing at St. Charles, and we were playing Naperville North,” Vostal recalled.

“It was a good game, but there were pictures of us with the snow going sideways.”

There was no snow Tuesday night, but players probably won’t need a photograph to remember the cold.

Batavia junior Karina Rosales burst onto the girls soccer scene with a strong freshman season, then took a step back during an admittedly frustrating sophomore season. Early indications suggest the forward is primed for a bounce-back junior year after netting a pair of goals in the Bulldogs’ season opener last week. By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com St. Charles East and St. Charles North hailed a new boys lacrosse era when their former co-op program split into separate entities two seasons ago.

The move resonated with everyone then, but still there were elements that took time to appreciate.

Saints seniors Nate Campana, Tim Canning and Brandon Huff have helped form the team’s core from the beginning.

Now that their prep careers are close to the end, however, they’re realizing the magnitude of the journey.

“It’s kind of crazy to think about it that I’ve been playing with these kids for probably my whole life,” said Huff, a defender. “To come up and finally have our own East team is kind of incredible.”

East rolled to three victories at Saturday’s season-opening Battle of Burgess at Geneva, reinforcing that the team isn’t just happy to be here.

College-bound talent – midfielders Campana (Lindenwood in Missouri) and Canning (Adrian in Michigan) have committed along with Huff (Augustana) – provide the leadership with a deep class of sophomores flanking them.

Sophomores fill four starting spots for coach Chris Conner, including attackmen Jack Russell and Tyler Vogel, midfielder Evan Anderson and long-stick midfielder Austin Griffin.

Speed characterizes the group, and thus far has helped it bond, too. Confined to the St. Charles Sportsplex for most of their early-season workouts, the Saints relished the opportunity to come untracked outdoors over the weekend.

“It is across the board,” Campana said. “Between our middies, our attackmen and our defense – even our goalies show they’re not afraid to come out of the cage and run a little bit. That’s great to have a team where everyone has equal athleticism and speed.”

With former co-coach Aaron Vermedal leaving to take the same role at Naperville Central, the Saints have adopted a new offensive style that hinges on spreading the scoring between lines.

An output of 25 goals in three games Saturday offered an encouraging start. Next

week, the Saints are set to test the range of their attack when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., for a spring break trip.

“It’s a time for you to really create an even stronger bond with your team,” Campana said. “You’re hanging out with them 24/7 now for one week.

Really, it’s to kind of test your

team under pressure. We will be going down there to play good teams. We’re not going to be going down there to waste our time.”

While other sightseeing in the Music City has yet to be finalized, the Saints plan to visit the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green,

Ky., on the ride home.

“We don’t really have any ties, so it’ll be the first time for many of us down there in Nashville,” Conner said.

East is accustomed to uncharted territory. At season’s end, the Saints hope to discover more of it in the IHSLA playoffs.

“I believe our team could have went a lot further,” Adduci said. “We didn’t have our best game that last game against South Elgin, but at the same time when I look back at all the memories I have with the great coaching staff and great program we have at St. Charles, it’s just been a blessing to me, and something I really appreciate.”

A First Team Kane County Chronicle All-Area selection, Adduci averaged 19.2 points a game during an impressive senior season that lost steam late as a pair of minor injuries limited his playing time leading up to regionals.

With a strong, three-year run at East in the books – Adduci transferred from Wheaton Academy after his freshman year – the explosive, 6-foot guard turns

his attention to his college basketball prospects.

Adduci would love to wind up playing Division I basketball, and has upcoming visits planned to Drake and California-Davis. He also is receiving interest from several D-II programs, and said he’d be open to going that route if it ends up being the best fit.

He’d like to decide relatively soon, possibly in April.

“It’s stressful because it’s narrowing down here to the end but it’s also exciting because after the season, recruiting picks up a little bit, and for me it definitely has picked up,” Adduci said. “It’s exciting, but at the same time it’s stressful. It’ll be over in a couple months, and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience you can have.”

Regardless of which school he picks, Adduci anticipates returning to more of a pure point guard role in college, which he said is his preference. In his past two seasons with the Saints, Adduci frequently played off the ball in more of a scoring-guard role as he shared the backcourt with another

skilled natural point guard, Cole Gentry.

Gentry projects to headline the 2014-15 Saints as East moves on without Adduci, dynamic forward AJ Washington and the other seniors who helped East to an 18-12 season.

Adduci expressed confidence the Saints’ program will remain on solid footing in his absence.

“Coach [Pat] Woods and [assistant coach Everette Stephens], they’re great at getting guys ready for the season, and after our last game, I just got a good vibe from everyone on the team that they were going to work hard and dedicate themselves to the offseason, which is something as a program you want to see moving forward,” Adduci said. “Even me being a senior, that’s something I was excited about because I know East basketball will be in a good place going forward.”

North water polo rolls; Williams no longer with NIU football KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North senior goalkeeper Collin Bawolek earned his first career shutout Tuesday, meeting every challenge from the Hinsdale South boys water polo team in a 15-0 win.

Bawolek made 13 saves and made one steal to help North improve to 6-3-1.

“He played very well, like he has all season,” North Stars coach Chris Cloy said.

“Today, I think the defense around him helped even more. They limited the shots that were put on him to more manageable shots and Collin did his job and had a nice night.”

Williams was recruited to NIU as a quarterback before switching to wide receiver as a redshirt freshman last football season.

Williams enters this weekend’s Mid-American Conference series at Bowling Green with a 3.38 ERA in 10⅓ innings over six appearances.

He has struck out four and walked 11.

He had six receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown in 11 games in the 2013 football season, also seeing time as a punt returner.

Dom Adduci plans to watch the game film from the St. Charles East boys basketball team’s season-ending loss to South Elgin – eventually.

For now – less than three weeks after the Saints fell in the IHSA Class 4A St. Charles North Regional championship game March 7 – Adduci isn’t ready to put himself through it.

“I have not watched it,” Adduci said.

“I probably will, but it’s too close to the end of the high school season.

Dom Adduci I followed the high school state tournament [in Peoria]. It’s going to take me a while, but I’m definitely going to get around to it.”

The loss was especially painful for the standout senior guard both because East led for much of the game, and the Saints were dealt some potentially good fortune when upstart South Elgin upset top-seeded Larkin earlier in the week.

Bullets blaze to 5th at NCSA nationals

All that real estate still amounts to just 670 members – the qualifier used only in comparison to the programs the Bullets jousted with in Orlando, Fla., last week.

“When you look at the teams we’re competing against, that’s one of the reasons that we’ve worked so hard to grow the club is that we can compete nationally,” Bullets president Bill Schalz said.

Schalz coaches Rosary and Marmion during the girls and boys high school seasons, and the Bullets’ contingent featured a few swimmers from both programs.

NCSA nationals brought

an especially quick turnaround for Cadets Mike Burke (Wayne) and Andrew Kasper (Batavia), who were a little more than two weeks removed from helping Marmion to an 11th-place finish in the IHSA state meet at Evanston.

They weren’t the only Bullets coming together to meet a challenge.

“I wouldn’t even call it a team. It’s more of a family, to be honest,” Kasper said.

“Not only are they teaching us swimming, they’re teaching us how to excel in life.”

St. Charles Swim Team, led by co-head coaches Jon Cabel and Tim Lewarchick, finished 15th in the combined team standings after five days and 44 total events.

SCST brought 20 athletes, its largest contingent yet, and scored 186 points – 180 more than last season. St. Charles East girls standout Shea Hoyt, an Iowa recruit, totaled 70 points for the team.

The Bullets, who finished fourth in 2012, are eager to stick around the top.

“A lot of balance,” Schalz said, “helped us get very far.”

Wedel aiming to be jack of all kicks for Huskies

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Could Tyler Wedel be a do-everything special teams kicker?

Wedel has spent the past three seasons handling kickoffs for Northern Illinois. Last year, the senior put punting duties on his resume.

In 2014, Wedel hopes to pull the trifecta, adding field goal kicking to his responsibilities, with Mathew Sims’ career now over.

Wedel said he had all of last year to get his punting mechanics down, so this spring he’s been focusing more on field goals. Wedel said he tries to kick between 20 and 30 a practice.

“I’ve gotten a lot better. I was recruited here as a punter and a kicker, they recruited me to do both,” said Wedel, who was his team’s kicker and punter at McFarland High School in Wisconsin. “I’m getting back to that form, I’m obviously a little more comfortable. Just have to work on staying focused and getting used to it.”

Last season, the coaching staff also trusted the running ability of Wedel, who was also a quarterback and defensive back in high school. Wedel,

who also was the holder for Sims on field goals, had three rushing attempts – two fake punts and a fake field goal.

With the Huskies trailing Iowa in the third quarter of the season opener, NIU faked a punt with Wedel taking off on a 42-yard run, which ended up being one of the biggest plays of the game.

Wedel has an average of 59.8 yards a kickoff in his three seasons as the team’s kickoff specialist. He averaged 40.4 yards a punt in 2013. Leg strength isn’t a problem.

“If it’s a good clear day, he’s anywhere from 40-50-something yards probably,” said Kevin Kane, the Huskies’ special teams coordinator. “We’ll see, we’re going to test it out, hopefully this spring.”

Wedel got a taste of collegiate field goal kicking a year ago – hitting 3 of 5 kicks.

He handled field goal duties in games against Akron and Central Michigan with Sims out with a leg injury, although Wedel said it was a tough situation, as Sims was more day-today and Wedel didn’t know if he would be kicking until game day.

Wedel hadn’t been practicing field goals last season until Sims went down, so he didn’t

have as many field goal reps as he would have liked to finetune his mechanics. Wedel would hit field goals from 42, 21 and 34 yards in his two games.

Two of his attempts against Akron – from 46 and 40 yards – were blocked.

“It was a difficult task. I did the best I could,” Wedel said.

“Those two blocks, those were the only problems that were with last year’s kicks.”

The Huskies have one other kicker with the team this spring, sophomore Josh Orne who walked on to the team during the 2013 season. NIU will bring in a kicker (Christian Hagan) and punter (Peter Deppe) this fall.

At this point in his career, Wedel’s a seasoned veteran. If he gives the Huskies the best option at all three special teams spots, the staff has no problem using him in every role.

“Tyler’s kind of a rare guy where he can do all three. He can kick off, he can do field goals and he can punt. He’s going to have that opportunity to try and do all three this spring,” Kane said. “We’ve got some guys coming in in the fall that will hopefully challenge him and take a little load off him maybe, but if he’s the best, he’s the best.”

What exactly are the Bears getting in Houston?

“They’re getting a guy who is going to play a bunch of snaps, and he’s going to give them everything he’s got,” Allen said.

“He’s a high-effort player. He plays really hard. He plays powerful. He plays the run and pass equally well.”

The Bears have quickly morphed into an offensive team under coach Marc Trestman, but fixing the defense that gave up nearly 400 yards a game in 2013 remains the top offseason priority.

As expected, general manager Phil Emery was proactive in free agency, signing Houston, defensive end Willie Young, safeties Ryan Mundy and M.D. Jennings and a handful of others who will compete for roster spots. Re-signing cornerback Charles Tillman to a oneyear deal was critical.

The hope is the Bears can land one or two players in the draft in May who can compete for starting spots, too, much like guard Kyle Long and offensive tackle Jordan Mills were able to do last season.

but Bears chairman George McCaskey has no issue with it and expects the defense to regroup.

“When the Monsters of the Midway were born, it was the innovative offense with the T-formation and the man in motion,” McCaskey said. “It was a very dynamic offense that couldn’t be stopped.

“But we want to get the defense back to a Chicago Bears brand of football, and we think it’s going to happen.”

It will be a process under defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and his revamped staff, but McCaskey and team president Ted Phillips fully support the plan Emery

and Trestman have in place, which includes re-signing Cutler to his lucrative deal.

“All of the free agency decisions are made by Phil and Marc with Ted’s and my support,” McCaskey said.

“I have all the faith in the world in the plan that Phil and Marc have put together,” Phillips said. “We’re excited about the season and what we have done so far in free agency, including Jay.” And including Houston, who had a career-best six sacks last season. When asked about losing Houston, Allen quickly pointed to the Raiders’ signings of defensive ends Justin Tuck and Antonio Smith and linebacker Lamarr Woodley.

“We lost a good young player,” Allen said. “I think anytime you lose young talent, that hurts you. But it was a situation where Lamarr thought it was a good situation for him, and he decided to move on, and we’ve got to move on from it.”

“First of all, [he’s] a class act,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said, “a really good kid. He’s smart.”

“Impressive, very impressive,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh and O’Brien familiarized themselves with Garoppolo, a Rolling Meadows graduate, when he was invited to Northwestern’s pro day earlier this month.

“He went through some tough times at Eastern there, where they were 2-9 two years ago, then kind of turned it around,” O’Brien said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings. “He was a big part of that.

“He’s got a quick release.

He’s athletic. I really enjoyed

talking football with him. He’s a great kid.”

A potential scenario to consider is the Texans and O’Brien passing on a quarterback with the first overall selection in the draft in May and taking Garoppolo with the first pick of the second round.

O’Brien definitely has a feel for successful quarterbacks, having worked with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for years before leaving for Penn State in 2012.

Then again, some draft pundits contend that Garoppolo won’t last past the first round.

“All teams are going to look at him as a potential player for their team,” Harbaugh said.

“He’s a good player.”

HAPPY CAMPER Bears chairman George McCaskey said more than once that he’s not involved in player-personnel decisions,

but he was thrilled when cornerback Charles Tillman resigned because he’s a big “Peanut” fan.

Tillman signed on for his 12th season with the Bears earlier this month. He got a one-year deal worth $2.75 million guaranteed. It includes a $500,000 signing bonus, up to $150,000 in incentives and $25,000-per-game roster bonuses.

“As a fan, I’m thrilled that Charles is coming back,” McCaskey said. “[He’s] a terrific person, great on the field, great in the locker room, great in the building and great in the community.

ORLANDO, Fla. – When it comes to defensive end Lamarr Houston, Raiders coach Dennis Allen knows what he’s losing and the Bears are gaining.

Allen explained why the win-starved Raiders would say farewell to an emerging, versatile 26-year-old talent.

“Yeah, he was a guy we would have liked to have been able to retain,” Allen said Tuesday during the AFC coaches breakfast at the NFL owners meetings. “But, obviously, there’s a business aspect to the [NFL]. Just because you want to retain somebody doesn’t mean that from a business standpoint it’s going to work.”

Houston was signed to a five-year, $35 million deal ($14.9 million guaranteed) by the Bears to be a cornerstone of their defensive rebuilding.

Shakira, as charming as ever

By ALLISON STEWART Special to The Washington Post Is there anyone alive who doesn’t have a special, secret fondness for Shakira? Besides maybe that famously angry sea lion who attacked the singer in 2012 and was presumably unaware of her selfless work with the United Nations and had probably never even heard “She Wolf,” because he would have really liked it.

Everyone else seems to have long ago succumbed to Shakira’s hip-swiveling charms. She’s an avatar of pop-culture globalization – a Colombian singer-songwriter of Lebanese descent whose songs are a multicultural grab bag of melodies from the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and, most prominently on her new, self-titled album, the American South. She’s a social-media giant.

Statues have been erected in her honor.

(OK, one statue. Made of metal, not the hand-chiseled marble she deserves. And it depicts Shakira wearing pants she probably would never wear. But it’s a start.)

Shakira has weird, very specific tastes: “Shakira” is not her first album to feature near-lethal doses of reggae and ’90s alt-rock, as if she hasn’t realized that those things are mostly awful. Yet she also has the broadest canvas of any pop diva in memory – she can contain multitudes, from cumbia to country, and still sound instantly, recognizably like herself.

“Shakira,” her charming, awkward, immensely appealing new disc, tests this theory. It was assembled by a murderers’ row of expensive producers and writers, including Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Cirkut. Any student of recent pop history knows what comes next – dignity-killing, one-size-fits-all dance-pop songs predestined for success and oblivion in the same month.

Shakira submits to Dr. Luke’s dehumanizing ministrations and manages to come out the other end sounding only slightly less like herself. “Dare (La La La)” doubles as the background music for Shakira’s new commercial for Activia yogurt, and it sounds like something Lady Gaga would have made before she became ridiculous. It’s wonderful.

Shakira’s spirit shines through on her latest album, a charming, awkward, immensely appealing new self-titled album. she wants (rootsy, often acoustic-based pop with a rangy feel and an affinity for early Alanis Morissette) and what the producers want (hits). It’s familiar territory for the singer, who has routinely employed of-the-moment production teams to contemporize (and Americanize) her sound, but seldom has the divide seemed so great.

The best tracks split the difference.

The new wave/reggae hybrid “Can’t Remember to Forget You” is an energetic duet with Rihanna, pop’s favorite inanimate object. “Loca por Ti” (one of a handful of Spanish tracks on the standard edition of the album) is ’80s jukebox country, finely rendered. The midtempo Latin pop track “You Don’t Care About Me” recalls vintage Marc Anthony.

Shakira has four fully formed emotions – Reproachful, Cheery, Let’s Dance and I Want to Do Things to You. That’s two more than Dr. Luke usually has to work with, and she also has a voice that’s hiccupy and distinct, especially at the wildest, warbliest reaches of her register. To make Shakira sound like everybody else takes some effort. On the disc’s weakest track, “Spotlight,” she sounds unerringly, depressingly, like Taylor Swift; the song sounds like a reheated “Red” outtake, and the vocal similarity is too marked to be accidental.

Swift is the unlikeliest of specters. But, if only because she is one of Shakira’s few rivals who can credibly deliver a slender love song backed by an acoustic guitar, she also haunts the folk ballad “23,” one of the album’s starkest and best songs. Shakira has never been much of a lyricist, but “23” is clunkier, and braver, (“I used to think that there was no god / But then you looked at me with your blue eyes / And my agnosticism turned into dust”) than Swift would ever dare to be.

Shakira’s comfort level seems to ebb and flow throughout the album. She’s commanding on the Spanish-language songs, playful on the bangers, subdued on the songs that are obviously ill-suited for her, such as the Nashville ballad “Medicine,” a collaboration with Blake Shelton, her fellow judge on “The Voice.”

It’s one of those duets where two famous people from different genres are joined by their business managers in pursuit of a crossover hit. They sing at each other and both sound as if they’d rather be anywhere else.

Shelton, also at half-wattage, treats her with unusual delicacy, as if he was enlisted partly for his hit-making skills and partly to stop her from running away.

Lung cancer screening recommended for high-risk people Dear Doctor K: I’m a longtime smoker. Do I need to be screened for lung cancer even if I don’t have any symptoms?

Dear Reader: Until recently, my answer would have been “no.” In the not-too-distant past, screening of people without symptoms – even smokers who were at high risk – was judged useless for lung cancer.

That’s because screening for lung cancer involved using standard chest X-rays, and they produced too many “false positive” results: They identified “spots” in the lungs that were harmless. And they also produced too many “false negative” results: They failed to find small, early and potentially curable cancers.

When screening chest X-rays found lung cancer, it was big and old enough that it usually already was incurable.

Computed tomography (CT) scans of the lungs, however, take much clearer pictures than standard chest X-rays. Studies in recent years have shown that when people are at high risk for developing lung cancer, CT scans find many more small, early and potentially curable lung cancers – with an acceptable number of “false positive” results. Most important, the evidence is that current types of CT do not just find

After advising for many years against screening for lung cancer (with standard chest X-rays or other techniques), the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) reviewed the latest studies. It now recommends yearly tests for people at high risk for lung cancer.

The USPSTF is a group of experts in evaluating scientific studies and in preventive medicine.

Specifically, the USPSTF recommends annual, low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans of the lungs for high-risk adults ages 55 to 79. You are considered high-risk if you have smoked for at least 30 “pack-years.” This could be 30 years of smoking one pack a day, 15 years at two packs a day, or other equivalent combinations. Screening is recommended for anyone in this group who is a current smoker or has quit in the last 15 years.

Any kind of X-ray – and CT scans use X-rays – involves radiation. Fortunately, the CT scanners that are used to screen for lung

cancer involve relatively little radiation. Most experts agree that the radiation risks from screening with these scanners are very small.

When it comes to lung cancer, however, prevention remains even more important than early detection. And the biggest change you can make to prevent lung cancer is not to smoke. If you smoke now, commit to quit.

Quitting strategies include: • Behavior programs, such as one-on-one counseling and support groups.

• Nicotine replacement, available in many forms including skin patches, chewing gum, lozenges, nasal spray or inhalers.

• Quit-smoking medications such as varenicline (Chantix) and buproprion (Zyban).

• Hypnosis, acupuncture and other alternative treatments.

If you fall into the USPSTF high-risk categories, talk to your doctor. The sooner you begin to be screened, the earlier these tests might detect a tumor. I’ve certainly changed my practice since the USPSTF published its opinion.

Dr. Wallace: Both my mother and father are admitted alcoholics. They maintain jobs, but almost all of their money is spent on booze. I’ve tried to get them to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, but they refuse.

Last year many of my school friends told me that Jerry liked me. I waited all school year for him to talk with me, but he didn’t say one word to me. Once school started again this fall, all of this started over again.

Kids came up to me and said that Jerry liked me. One of the kids was Jerry’s best friend.

I discussed things with my mom and she told me to be a little assertive and to talk

If your wife is a serious journal writer – and many people are – that she would want her writings to remain intact in spite of the fact they reflect her emotional affair is not unusual. If that’s the case, instead of insisting she edit or destroy her journal, my advice is to stop reading it.

Dear Abby: I’m a 47-year-old man who was single until seven years ago. Then I met “Maggie,” the most wonderful woman I had ever known. She fulfilled everything I had ever dreamed of (including bringing a wonderful 4-year-old little girl into my life). The biological father is out of the picture.

Maggie had wrestled with some health issues, complications set in, and I lost the only person who ever mattered, aside from our little girl.

My question is, since we were never married, how do I refer to Maggie when relating what

happened? I am in the process of adopting her daughter and explanations to strangers are tough. (“Wow, you’re taking on a child when you don’t HAVE to?”) How do I respond to these remarks? – Grieving In Missouri Dear Grieving: Although you and Maggie weren’t legally married, you were a couple for some time.

I’m very sorry for your loss. It would be accurate to refer to her as your late significant other, your partner or longtime girlfriend.

I would like to compliment you for stepping up to care for the girl when her biological father did not.

And I do have suggestions for how to respond to anyone insensitive enough to ask why you would “take on” a child you didn’t “have to.” The first would be to ignore the question. The second would be to avoid such a person in the future, and the third would be to reply, “I love her like a daughter, want to make sure she’s secure and provided for.”

On the second round of the auction, if North-South use support doubles, South has a perfect hand with exactly three-card heart support. But if North-South do not employ this gadget, South should raise to two hearts.

Little Elburn sports bar has big plans KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – Elburn’s little sports bar – one named for the shortest player in Major League Baseball history – has some big plans to celebrate the first full day of baseball.

Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill, located at 117 N. Main St. in Elburn, has planned its opening day celebration, starting at 11 a.m. Monday.

The event includes a ribbon-cutting at noon, raffles and a silent auction to benefit local and national organizations, and ballpark-themed food.

Annette Theobald, one of the owners of the restaurant, said the establishment opened in May 2013. There hadn’t been a proper grand opening, and – as improvements and upgrades were made – the weather turned cold, and she said thoughts turned to a celebration of the first big day of baseball.

With early weather forecasts suggesting temperatures in the 60s for that day, there is hope for a grand party, with benches set up outside to accommodate bigger crowds than normal.

Theobald and her husband, Dick, also own Paisano’s Pizza and Grill, which is a long-established carryout eatery across the street from Gaedel’s. And Gaedel’s does allow a sit-down experience, but the space is small – with seating for only 42. That’s

why it’s named for Gaedel, a player shorter than 4 feet tall, who was signed to play for the St. Louis Browns in 1951 as a publicity stunt.

“Because it’s a small sports bar, and we wanted a term that meant short or small in a kind of sporting term, my husband remembered Eddie Gaedel,” Annette Theobald said. But she said bigger crowds are welcome and expected on Monday, and she hopes as many as 400 people visit during the celebration hours, which will go from 11 a.m. to midnight.

She said there will be raffle items, including tickets to White Sox or Kane County Cougars games, Kaneland apparel, and Eddie Gaedel items. There will be a silent auction to benefit the National Kidney Foundation and the P.E.A.K. Foundation, which stands for promoting enrichment and kindness. The P.E.A.K. Foundation sponsors the Kindness Campaign.

‘Purple Store’ joins cupcake fundraiser

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – Alexa Hill is hoping to cover the inside of Hill’s Country Store with purple paper cupcakes, which would be an appropriate interior decoration for the “Purple Store.”

Hill, 25, is the manager of the store, which is at 2S133 Harter Road in Kaneville. She is participating in the Great Purple Cupcake Project to support epilepsy awareness. The effort will go through Sunday.

She has made chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with purple frosting, as well as cupcake-shaped sugar cookies. Those pastries are on sale for $1 each, with 50 percent of the pro-

ceeds to benefit the Anita Kaufmann Foundation, which benefits from the project. Patrons also may purchase a paper cupcake for $1, with 100 percent of those proceeds going to the charity. The paper cupcakes are put up on the wall of the store.

It is the second year Hill has participated in the project. She said she raises $600 last year. She said she was inspired because one of her mother’s cousins died in his 20s of an epileptic seizure. She said he didn’t know he had epilepsy.

“A lot more people than you think are affected by epilepsy,” said Hill, who added that some customers will tell her of their connections to epilepsy when they purchase a cupcake.

Students then learned to expand their knowledge and research by reading books and comparing the information they found in both resources. In their classrooms, they are creating a variety of different informational presentations to show all the wonderful information they learned through their research!

Third grade students at Kaneland John Stewart Elementary have recently led the learning in math with their peers. All year long, students at John Stewart have been learning about math using number talks, a discussion-driven way to integrate many mathematical practices in a single lesson. During a number talk, a problem is posed and the students are challenged to figure out as many ways to solve the problem as they can. The focus is on discovering multiple ways to solve a problem and on students articulating their thinking.

Groups of up to 3 students travelled to each math class and explained a math problem, facilitated a problem-solving conversation, asked for ways that their peers solved it and helped to clarify any of the students’ misconceptions. The students help guide other students to a deeper understanding of the math concepts by asking questions such as, “How did you figure that out?” and “Why did you do that?”

We are excited to see students learning from each other, collaborating and talking about their thinking. They are well on their way to becoming college, career and community ready.
