Despite protests, Kaneland library position cut Board OKs decision after lengthy debate SUGAR GROVE – Upset over a plan to eliminate the learning resource center director position at the elementary level, seven people spoke Monday night during the public comment portion at Kaneland’s school board meeting, urging members not to move forward with the proposal.

Board members debated the issue, but they ultimately voted, 5-2, to move ahead with cutting the position as part of Kaneland School District 302’s staffing plan for the 2015-16 school year.

Teresa Witt and Tony Valente voted against the plan.

Two board members – Gale Pavlak and Pedro Rivas – indicated they were voting to approve the staffing plan “with reservations.” Valente said he was voting no, “with no reservations.”

The schools’ learning resource centers can be described as libraries. The district has four elementary schools, and each has a learning resource center, but staffing has been reduced over the years as cuts have become necessary.

Previously, there were two directors, who would split

duties to cover two schools each, but currently, there is one, Patricia Barton, who spends time at all four elementary schools.

Lori Shroka, president of the Kaneland Education Association, waited until a second opportunity for public comment near the end of the recent meeting, which lasted more than three hours. She said she was “very concerned” with some of what she heard during the night, mentioning the position elimination as one of the issues.

Monday’s decision means Barton will be reassigned to a different position in the district, and the responsibilities of the learning resource director will be shared among different staff members.

Administrators presented the plan at a board meeting two weeks ago.

Interim Superintendent Renee Goier stressed that officials were directed to create a staffing plan with no additions.

However, she said students are taking fewer study halls, and she said that will require additional teachers to accommodate any added classes.

The seven who spoke during public comment at Monday’s meeting were connected with libraries.

Among them were Lorna Code, a librarian and media specialist at Kaneland High School, as well as those who served on library boards, other staff members and those who have specialty in the field. They presented data that stressed the value of the position. Several stated if the position had become ineffective, it was because of the cuts that had been made.

Witt previously had stated her opposition to the position elimination. She has worked in libraries, and said she knows how important the position can be. She said she was not surprised it was identified as an area to cut adding, “I am not able to support this.”

Board member Peter Lopatin said he appreciat-

ed the public comments, calling them “powerful.”

Lopatin also made it clear he was not among those who “said we need to be at a neutral, zero budget.” He said there are “some real risks that come from doing this.” He asked what would happen if it would not have been approved on Monday.

Goier said it would delay preparation for next year.

Valente said there is “so much that a good librarian does for your school.” If done right, he said, it is one of the most important positions at a school.

Goier stressed she did not want to cut the position, “but we have to make some choices.”

Rivas said difficult decisions would have to be made to keep costs down.

“We can’t turn back the clock to where we were six years ago,” Rivas said. “It’s impossible.”

Board member Veronica Bruhl said she appreciated all who came to speak, but she also remembered coaches coming to speak, social workers and others who have pleaded their case.

She said “there are a lot of needs.”

Kaneville president seeks applicants for village clerk

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – The Kaneville village president still seeks applicants to replace the current village clerk, who resigned earlier this year.

Pat Hill said she plans to review early next week the seven or eight resumes she has received thus far for the clerk position, in addition to any other resumes she might receive this week.

Current village clerk Serina Hauser announced her resignation in February to focus on her family and her full-time banking job, Hill said. Hauser was selected as village clerk in June 2013, according to village trustee meeting minutes.

“She did an awesome job,” Hill said of Hauser on Monday.

Hauser will remain clerk until her replacement is hired, Hill said.

Hopefuls for alderman, school board speak out at forum

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Candidates in the April 7 consolidated election for Geneva alderman and for District 304 school board took questions Tuesday during a League of Women Voters of Central Kane County forum.

About 50 people attended the event, held at the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles.

First Ward candidates are Patrick Lenski and Tara Burghart while 4th Ward candidates are James Radecki and Eleanor Hamilton, each seeking a four-year term.

Seven hopefuls are seeking three four-year seats on the school board.

They are incumbents Mary Stith, Kelly Nowak and Michael McCormick and newcomers Tina Yagla, Ann Murtaugh,Taylor Egan

Yagla did not attend the forum.

Burghart, a former reporter for The Associated Press, said she would bring “a fresh voice” to the City Council.

“I am an independent thinker and I would be a thoughtful alderman,” Burghart said. “An alderman is the first person you

go to when you have an issue in your neighborhood or on your street.”

Lenski is a lifelong resident of Geneva who is currently finishing a six-year term on the park board.

He said while on the park board, he has been part of overseeing an awardwinning park and done projects in conjunction with the city.

“I would bring that experience to the City Council,” Lenski said.

In his time on the park board, Lenski said he served as treasurer and oversaw a budget of $13 million, and worked with staff and the board in gaining consensus on issues.

Hamilton, who served on the city’s Mental Health Board, said she would want to make good decisions to help maintain Geneva’s quality of life.

“I always want to make

sure … we are getting good value for our tax dollars,” Hamilton said. “I have a lot of experience across the board in my career in human services.”

Radecki, who served as 2nd Ward alderman from 1999 to 2006, and two years before that on the city’s plan commission, said he sees the effects of property taxes on residents.

As a real estate agent, he

said he sees young families who cannot afford to move to Geneva and seniors who cannot afford to stay.

Among school board candidates, only Schneider said she was endorsed by an organization other than a newspaper – the teachers union, the Geneva Education Association.

“I value teachers [and] I don’t see this as a conflict of interest,” Schneider said.

Biggs, the director of faith formation at the church, said she was impressed the children were enthused about the session.

“They really worked hard at it,” she said. “One mother said her little girl was on the bus every day this week memorizing her stations.”

As Easter approaches, churches everywhere have been planning such ceremonies and commemorations.

The Rev. Mark Tusken, rector at St. Mark’s Church in Geneva, described it as a way to re-enact what Jesus went through on the last day of his life before he was crucified.

There are 14 stations, and they are depicted on the walls of many churches. At some churches, events take place on a regular basis during Lent.

Some incorporate a ceremony into their Good Friday activities. There are variations.

Some, such as the one Biggs facilitated, will include children. There also are “living” Stations of the Cross events, which feature actors portraying the different stations.

It goes from the first station, in which Jesus is condemned to death, to the 14th station, in which Jesus is buried in the tomb. Although the events are associated with the Catholic church, they’re not exclusive to that religion. For instance, St. Mark’s in Geneva is an Episcopal church.

Tusken said St. Mark’s features different Stations of the Cross events on Good Friday.

The actors will be in costume for the event. Wilson said it is “very elaborate.”

“They are acting out each station,” she said. “There is a little background music when they are changing stations.

With each station, they freeze frame themselves, and the narrator, or reader, is talking

about that particular station.

Wilson said the event is “very emotional.”

“How could you not be emotional thinking of the terrible pain and suffering he had?” she asked, adding there also will be “tears of relief, too, and the anticipation of the joy that we’ll have in the end.”

Biggs said she would recommend people participate in the Stations of the Cross, whether it be at a ceremony or “even if

you just did it on your own, to recognize the great love God has for us.” She said it’s “very emotional for me to go. … I hate to see Jesus suffer.”

“We know how much he loves us and takes care of us,” she said. “It is part of our Catholic tradition.”

Tusken said he would recommend going to any Holy Week event.

“It opens our souls to the reality of these last events in Jesus’ life,” he said.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon and Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen were guest speakers at the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce Update Legislative Committee Luncheon, held at Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva. More than 80 people attended, including chamber members from Geneva and Batavia. McMahon explained in addition to criminal cases, his office also is responsible for civil work, including representing every member of the Kane County Board and all elected countywide officeholders.

“It’s a side of the office nobody really hears about,” McMahon said. “And that is the right role for that office to play.”

In handling criminal cases – everything from murder to armed robbery, drugs to aggravated battery – McMahon said the challenge is to get 500 people through a court call

With regard to juvenile crime, McMahon explained crimes involving rape or murder committed by a 16- or 17-year-old should not be heard in juvenile court.

In juvenile court, the maximum penalty is four years for premeditated murder, he said.

“Those are adult crimes and should be heard in adult court,” McMahon said. “I don’t think that reflects the seriousness of that crime.”

Lauzen, who spent 20 years in Springfield as a state senator, said people always ask him

which role he likes better.

“It’s better with Kane County because you can actually do something,” Lauzen said. “In Springfield, you give advice; it’s ignored; bad things happen.

Here in Kane County, if something goes wrong, I know it’s my fault, and I know I better fix it.”

Lauzen also presented a chart showing the county had a 50 percent increase in its levy in the previous years, from 2001 to 2010, but has frozen its levy from 2012 to 2014, resulting in $10.2 million in property tax relief.

The first meeting is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the library, said Shannon Halikias, the library director. The library is at 125 S. Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove, Board member Pat Graceffa, who also led the former Friends group, will be lead-

ing the formation of the new group, she said.

“I know she is hoping to re-energize the membership base and bring new members on board and interested in getting new officers,” Halikias said.

“There are so many types of projects the Friends could be involved in,” Halikias said.

“A passion for libraries and advocacy for the community are the top traits we like to see in Friends.”

Halikias said she had no idea how many might attend the first meeting.

“It’s open to anyone who wants to be a part of it. It could be a small group or a big group,” Halikias said. “I’m just excited that it’s happening.”

Halikias said Friends groups are important to libraries because they support many projects and initiatives.

After the Friends group gets going again, Halikias said she would like to see a library foundation group start, as well. A library foundation is a charity that raises funds to provide a stable source of support for a library’s materi-

By CHARLES MENCHACA ST. CHARLES – St. Charles residents Tuesday afternoon had their first look at the logo for the city’s latest branding effort.

The multicolored logo was revealed in front of more than 100 people during a branding launch and logo release party at the Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The logo includes silhouettes of city landmarks, such as the St. Charles Municipal Building tower, the Arcada Theatre marquee and the Main Street Bridge.

“I think it’s great – very colorful, very modern and family-friendly,” said Shannon Stone, a business education teacher at St. Charles East High School who attended the party.

The logo is part of a larger branding initiative between the city of St. Charles and the Downtown St. Charles Partnership. It also includes the “St. Charles – Discover Your City Side” tagline that was revealed Monday.

Batavia has gone to the dogs; special events set PARK DISTRICT DISH Kari Felkamp I’ve had dogs my entire life. Until I got out of college and lived on my own, I didn’t know any other way. When I began working for the Batavia Park District more than seven years ago, I loved that all the staff were dog lovers, and I also loved that Batavia was such a dog-friendly community.

Everywhere I went, I would see people with their dogs in tow – on the trails, in the parks, at the River Rhapsody Concert Series and at Windmill City Festival.

In 2008, with a growing need for space for dogs to run offleash, the park district opened the Bark Park at West Main Community Park. Seeing the success of the Bark Park and getting requests for dog-related events, the district decided to host a Doggie Easter Egg Hunt in 2012. Nearly 100 dogs were in attendance at the inaugural event.

Then two and a half years ago, Dirks came into my life!

My husband and I picked out our boxer boy when he was just 3 weeks old. When he was 2 months old, he got to come home with us. Dirks has attended the egg hunt several times and always has a blast. He gets to sniff out treat-filled eggs, chat with all the nice people

at the pet-friendly booths, and then run around the three-acre, fenced-in Bark Park after the event. His buddy, Trigger, a 5-year-old German short-haired pointer, also enjoys the event, along with his owners, the Saam family of Batavia.

“We love the doggie egg hunt, and the Bark Park is such a beautiful location,” said Jamie Saam. “It’s such a fun afternoon to spend with fellow

dog lovers, and Trigger gets very excited to hunt for the treat-filled eggs.”

This year’s Doggie Easter Egg Hunt will be at noon Saturday at the Bark Park at West Main Community Park, 40W101 W. Main St., Batavia.

Pre-registration will begin on-site at 11 a.m., or you can skip the line and pre-register at www.bataviaparks.org. The cost is $10 for the first dog and $5 for each additional. A portion of the proceeds will once again benefit Anderson Animal Shelter.

Thanks to local sponsors, including DePaw University, Benji’s Barking Lot, Animal House Veterinary Hospital, and Healthy Pet, there are also plenty of prize eggs to go around.

This is the fourth year the park district has offered the event, and each year has averaged 75-100 dogs. With the popularity of the Doggie Easter Egg Hunt, district staff decided to host another pet-related event at the Bark Park in May. The Walk & Wag 3K-9 is a fun walk that will be at 10 a.m. May 9. The first 50 individuals or

families to register will receive a complimentary “Wag Bag” full of fun giveaways for you and your pet. The event also will serve as a dedication of the new bulldog statue, painted by a local artist, which will serve as the base for the district’s new Pet Memorial Program.

Individuals will be able to buy an engraved, granite brick to commemorate a beloved pet.

“I think many families who have enjoyed time at the Bark Park would love an opportunity to both honor a beloved pet, as well as have an opportunity to support a location they enjoy with their dogs,” said Saam.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Max Washington, an 11-year-old Geneva boy who is trying to raise $10,000 for childhood cancer research by Wednesday night, might just meet his goal.

Michael Olesen, owner of Stockholm’s in Geneva, said Max has raised $3,500 so far for St. Baldrick’s, the charity that funds childhood cancer research.

This is the seventh year

Max has had his head shaved for the St. Baldrick’s charity.

Stockholm’s, at 306 W. State St., Geneva, will donate 10 percent of that day’s sales to St. Baldrick’s.

If Max meets the $10,000 challenge, Olesen said he will have his own head shaved that night.

“There are a number of people that have stated they will be there to make certain that he raises the $10,000 needed. They’re going to contribute the balance that’s due,” Olesen said. “They have the wherewithal to do it.”

Olesen said he expects to be done about 8 to 8:30 p.m. because it’s a school night for Max.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 19-yearold Mid-Valley Special Education Cooperative student was charged with battery last week after physically assaulting another student, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

Britteny K. Mitchell, of the 0 to Britteny 100 block of K. Mitchell Cottonwood Circle, Batavia, was charged with the Class A misdemeanor on Friday, the day after another student came home and told her parents about the assault at the Mades-Johnstone Center, 1304 Ronzheimer Ave., St. Charles, police

reported.

According to the report, Mitchell and several of her friends were talking Thursday at lunchtime about getting into a fight. Her friends “repeatedly told her to get into a fight today, at which time Britteny advised she would,” the report states.

Mitchell then looked at two students and started yelling at one for looking at her, police reported.

One of the students made a comment about how Mitchell has not yet graduated, prompting Mitchell to attempt an attack on the student, according to the report.

Although others interfered and separated the students in the lunchroom, Mitchell reportedly pursued the other student in the hallway.

According to the report,

Mitchell kicked the other student in her knee, causing her to fall to the ground. She then punched the student twice in the stomach and once in the face and tried to stomp on her head but was stopped by a teacher, police reported.

The report indicated that after school ended, both students left without further incident.

The other student’s parents did, however, decide to file a police report after they learned of the events, according to the report.

Carla Cumblad, executive director of Mid-Valley, said parents have the prerogative to file a police report. She noted Mitchell also faced discipline at school.

“We followed the discipline guidelines of the schools we work with,” she said.

That’s why he attended an information session Tuesday about Blackberry Township’s upcoming referendum, which is seeking funds for road improvements.

Kozlowski wanted to know the consequences of an

up or down vote, he said, “so I can put my X in the right spot.”

The referendum question, which is on the ballot for the April 7 election, asks residents whether the limiting tax rate for the township road district should be increased from 18.5 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation to 32.5 cents.

The increase would cost about $140 more a year in taxes for someone who owns a home valued at $300,000, Highway Commissioner Rod Feece said.

If approved, the money will go toward improving the

He was also a lifelong member of the American Dental Association, ACP, and a Fellow in the American College of Dentists.

Two businesses fail liquor checks in Elburn, Sugar Grove KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Two of 11 liquor-license holders in Elburn, Sugar Grove and Campton Hills recently failed an underage compliance check, according to a news release from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.

Chico’s Cantina, at 107 Valley Drive, Elburn, and Village Liquor, at 84 Main St., Sugar Grove, failed the March 19 checks, which were conducted by the ILCC in conjunction with the Secretary of State Police.

Two previous violators were retested for compliance and passed, meaning they refused to sell liquor to the ILCC underage participants. Those businesses were Schmidt’s Towne Tap, 107 N. Main St.,

Elburn, and Country Stop, 9S595 Route 30, Sugar Grove.

Raise the smoking age THE WASHINGTON POST Forty-two million Americans still smoke. That is a much smaller proportion of the population than decades ago. But it’s still a public health disaster: Eighteen percent of adults put themselves and their families at risk of major and wholly preventable health problems.

Education programs, changing social attitudes and higher tobacco taxes have pushed the smoking rate down, and cigarette bans have made the air a lot less foul in public places. But a new report articulates the logic behind an additional approach to fighting tobacco: Raise the age at which people legally can buy tobacco products to 19, 21 or even 25. Cities, states and even Congress should consider this option seriously.

Most states require tobacco buyers to be at least 18.

But four states have moved the age to 19, and New York City and a few others have raised it to 21. Congress didn’t go so far in its overhaul of federal tobacco regulation several years ago. But it did order a report on the impact of such policies. The Institute of Medicine found that increasing the age to 21 would reduce smoking by 12 percent. It found much smaller effects for an age limit of 19 and slightly better results for 25.

These findings make sense. Nicotine’s pleasurable effects are strongest on teenage brains, making continued smoking and eventual addiction much more likely if experimentation begins early. It’s no wonder that 85 percent of daily smokers started before age 21. Underage smokers by and large get their tobacco products, primarily cigarettes, from friends and acquaintances.

Part of the rationale for increasing the legal age to buy tobacco is to isolate adolescents from social connections that enable them to light up. Another part is to further adjust social norms and expectations about teenage smoking, particularly in the way parents and schools treat the issue.

The public health benefits of the projected decline in smoking from raising the age to 21 would take years to realize, but they would be significant. There would be 249,000 fewer premature deaths, 45,000 fewer lung cancer deaths and 4.2 million fewer total years of life lost among those born between 2000 and 2019. Not to mention how much healthier people would be in the years they are alive. The benefits wouldn’t end with smokers themselves: Between now and 2100, 286,000 fewer babies would be born prematurely, and the effects of secondhand smoke on children would diminish. The researchers insist that their projections are conservative.

It’s tricky figuring out when to treat young people as adults – mature enough to drink, smoke, vote, fight or engage in other activities. Society hasn’t settled on a single answer, sending a contradictory and undoubtedly frustrating message to those on the cusp of adulthood. But, the report shows, while policymakers aren’t about to clear up that mixed message, 18 isn’t the soundest place to set the smoking age. Cities, states and the federal government should listen.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR IT’S USUALLY IMPRACTICAL To the Editor: The St. Charles Park District wants us to pay $23 million of the $28 million referendum for a fitness center. The park district claims that if the referendum passes, then your annual property taxes will go up by about $92.40 if you own a $300,000 home, and that fees collected will cover operating expenses.

I understand the role of a park

district is to provide open space, which offers easy access for the public. It’s usually impractical for private citizens to buy land and limit public access only to those who pay a fee.

However, why use public money to compete with existing preschool programs and fitness centers? Since when is it appropriate for a park district to justify its spending based on projected cash flows, and how much confidence should we place in those

projections? The park district apparently thinks that small business owners can’t provide these services, but there are many preschool programs and fitness centers in the area. These small business owners pay taxes and provide jobs for others who pay taxes. Why make it difficult for them to succeed?

I’m voting against the St. Charles Park District referendum.

“I don’t really think it matters how early or how late, but it’s really a fun game and competitive,” North senior boys standout Chris Stanek said. “It’s our rival, you know, and we know the kids there, so it’s kind of fun.”

In 2014, the North Stars boys rolled, 15-2, while the girls won, 17-11.

When it came to his football recruiting, however, Flanigan opted for a slow play.

By recently committing to NCAA Division III Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, the Saints senior wide receiver formally ended a long courtship with the Duhawks.

“They’ve been recruiting me since the summer, and so they showed a lot of interest Mo Flanigan and the players were really welcoming,” Flanigan said. “I did three stays.

Each time, it felt really nice.”

Another IIAC member, Coe College, showed interest in Flanigan, along with Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais and Trinity in Deerfield.

Through it all, Duhawks coaches spoke of Flanigan’s potential to contribute early, and even were interested in his punt returning ability.

“They want to use me right away, so I really felt at home,” he said.

Flanigan credited Saints coach Bryce Farquhar and predecessor Mike Fields for their roles as motivators and guides during the recruiting process.

“They both were huge in helping me in getting to where I was,” Flanigan said.

Starring in Texas again: Telling friends and family where she’ll be playing her collegiate

women’s volleyball typically prompts the same response for East senior Caroline McKeighan.

She’ll have the opportunity to both visit and remember The Alamo at NCAA D-III Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Then again, the libero has been there and done that, to an extent. She grew up in Helotes, Texas, just northwest of San Antonio, and recalling her roots helped pave a path to becoming a Tiger.

“The overall atmosphere of the campus was very unique,” McKeighan said. “I used to live in Texas, so I was pretty familiar with it. I felt like a spark. It was just really unique.”

McKeighan spent 11 years in Helotes, and visiting the region again for the first time since middle school triggered a rush of emotions.

She also considered Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, but the East Coast ultimately lacked the pull of home.

“I’m really excited. I’ve been excited for long time,” McKeighan said. “I’ve always wanted to play in college and finally saying I’m … playing somewhere, it’s amazing. It’s just so cool.”

Go big and stay home: East senior boys basketball center Jack Bronec weighed the possibility of attending three Midwestern schools before committing to nearby North Central College.

“The coach, Todd Raridon, he’s a great guy. Very calm. I like his coaching staff, I like the campus,” Bronec said. “With being in Naperville, there are a lot of options for entertaining yourself, and you also have the train right there, so you also can go down to the city if you want to. A really nice place, and I think it’s a great place for me.”

Bronec also considered Holy Cross and Goshen colleges in Indiana. NCC’s relative lack of height also helped convince the 6-8, 215-pounder to become a Cardinal.

“They didn’t really have many bigs,” Bronec said.

“That’s what they were looking for, and they got it.”

Geneva wing Nate Navigato, a senior committed to Buffalo, led the Vikings in scoring in both of their Class 4A state final four games. The Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week had 19 points in a semifinal against Normal and 15 in the third-place game against Bolingbrook. Navigato spoke with the Chronicle’s Kevin Druley about his weekend. An edited transcript follows: How much did everyone talk about the season on the bus ride home Sunday?

A lot. This was one of the best seasons in Geneva basketball history. It was incredible, this whole experience, from when we started to when we finished. It was just incredible to see us grow throughout

the whole entire year. I wouldn’t want to do it with anybody else.

Had you been to the final four in Peoria before as a spectator?

That was my first time. My dad goes every year, but it was pretty cool. It was my first time to play. … Yeah, that was a great place. A great arena, and I just thought everything around it was really nice.

It was a great place for basketball.

You obviously had lots on your mind Friday. Were you able to watch much of Buffalo in the (NCAA) tournament?

Yeah. We had practice right before the Buffalo game. Right when we finished that, I had time to go see it. It was cool watching that.

It was unfortunate they lost, but definitely a great experience.

The Bears signed three veteran defensive players to oneyear deals Tuesday, plugging three holes and, in theory, allowing the team to draft the best player available rather than for need next month.

But for the public backlash for signing former 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald – who was accused of domestic violence and sexual assault last season, but charged with neither – the moves come with little risk for the Bears.

Like McDonald, former Redskins defensive end Jarvis Jenkins and Buccaneers inside linebacker Mason Foster will come to Halas Hall with a oneyear chance to up their earning power.

“There are a lot of good options right now on one-year deals with guys,” Bears general manager Ryan Pace said Tuesday after signing the two defensive ends. “And we’re healthy

enough with our cap where we can do it.

“I like guys motivated coming in on kind of prove-it contracts. I can say that. I think that’s good.”

Jenkins, 26, started 33 games the past three seasons for the Redskins, including 14 last season. He missed his rookie season with a torn ACL after being selected in the second round of the 2011 draft.

Jenkins could start opposite McDonald in the Bears’ new 3-4 defense, which requires ends to be stout run defenders.

Both have the size the Bears covet at the position; Jenkins is 6-foot-4, 315 pounds, while McDonald is 6-3, 290 pounds.

Shoveling snow can be risky if you’re out of shape Dear Doctor K: Every winter my wife worries that I am going to have a heart attack while shoveling snow. Does she have cause for concern?

Dear Reader: She does. Each winter, more than 1,200 heart-related deaths occur during or after snowstorms. Shoveling snow is risky for many reasons: • Shoveling is similar to weight lifting. Resistance exercise raises both heart rate and blood pressure, stressing the heart.

• Cold weather affects the heart. To conserve body heat in the cold, blood vessels narrow.

This raises blood pressure and puts stress on the heart.

• Untrained muscles make the heart work harder. Most people use their legs much more than their arms. Using unprepared arm muscles makes the heart work harder.

• Shoveling is seasonal. Working out regularly greatly reduces a person’s overall risk of sudden death. But shoveling snow isn’t a regular form of exercise.

I have patients who insist on shoveling the snow themselves.

If you fall into this category, heed my advice: • Get in shape before it snows.

Fitness will protect your heart from the stresses of shoveling.

Exercise year-round with a combination of aerobics, stretching,

• Don’t shovel early in the morning. That’s when heart attacks are most likely to occur.

• Don’t shovel after meals.

Your heart is pumping extra blood to your gut after you eat. If you shovel after a meal, you’re also asking your heart to pump extra blood to your muscles.

• Warm up. Stretch and limber up with calisthenics before you put on your coat.

• Use a lightweight shovel. The snow is heavy enough.

• Shovel smartly. It’s much safer to lift two or three light loads than one heavy load. Yes, that may mean your shoveling will take a little longer. But that’s good: What you want to do is spread out the intensity.

• Pace yourself. Divide a big job into several 20-minute segments and pause to rest every five minutes.

• Set reasonable goals. Clean only enough for safe passage.

Don’t try to impress your neighbors by clearing your entire front walkway. Just clear enough so that folks, walking single file, can

get to your front door.

• Listen to your body. Put down your shovel and head indoors if you experience chest pain, palpitations, undue shortness of breath or fatigue, lightheadedness or nausea. These could be symptoms of heart disease. Unfortunately, the first sign of heart trouble while shoveling snow may be none of these symptoms. Instead, the heart just stops.

If you have heart disease, have risk factors for heart disease or are older than 50, please take this advice: Hire someone to clear the snow for you, or at least use a snow blower.

About 10 years ago, one of my patients decided he was getting too old to shovel snow and hired someone to do it. While walking to the bus on the first snowy morning, he experienced chest pain. Teen wants answers about sex Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and keep hearing about “the birds and the bees” from my know-it-all friends and some older kids at school who brag about having sex with their boyfriends. I’m smart enough to know that not everything they are talking about is true, but I do think that some of what they say might be true.

Last week, I went to my mom and told her that I had a few questions about sex and getting pregnant and I needed her answers. But she got sort of nervous and told me that I was much too young to be told about the “facts of life.”

I was really surprised and disappointed that my mom didn’t want to talk to me about this. But now I don’t know how I can get truthful answers to my questions. What can I do? – Wondering, La Porte, Indiana Dear Wondering: Your mother is still the best source of information for a discussion regarding sex. You are old enough to know the truth, and your mom is shirking her duty when she won’t answer your questions.

You should speak with your school nurse, physical education teacher or counselor and ask this person to call and to ask your mom to come to school for a conference.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 18 and was recently hospitalized for eating disorders – anorexia and bulimia (stuffing myself, then vomiting). I’d like to address my message to all the young girls who read your column and are anorexic or bulimic, but who won’t admit it.

I used to be the same way. When my family and friends told me that I had an eating problem, I denied it even though

Many years ago, I wrote a lengthy analysis of the various types of IQ test. I noted that these tests and bridge have some things in common. In particular, the more you practice on a particular type of test or bridgeplay technique, the better you will score.

In today’s deal, how should South plan the play in four spades after the defenders begin with three rounds of hearts?

Since North might have raised spades with only threecard support, holding, for example, 3-4-5-1 distribution, South rebid three clubs to test the waters. North, with four spades, a useful club king and a ruffing value in that suit, was happy to jump to game despite his weak trumps.

Declarer can afford only one trump loser. This requires finding East with the ace, the suit splitting 3-2, and leading twice toward the hand with the two honors.

South crosses to dummy with, say, a diamond and leads a spade.

Presumably, East will play low.

Declarer takes the trick with his king (or queen), returns to dummy with a club, and leads another trump. With this layout, the defenders cannot defeat the contract.
