Illinois lawmakers are considering a bill that would add an excise tax to sugar beverages. The state would use the revenue to create an “obesity fund” that would help to “diminish the human and economic costs of obesity in the State of Illinois,” according to the proposed amendment. Buddy Break provides fun for all

By BRENDA SCHORY schory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – One-year-old Kei’ana Bateman of Kaneville cupped rice in her tiny hand and scooped it into a cup.

Nearby, Luke Abbs of Batavia also ran his hands through the rice, while their one-onone buddies stayed with them.

In the next rooms, children played with cars and trucks, Legos, Play-Doh, basketball and saw a magician perform, among other activities.

Luke and Kei’ana, both children with special needs, were among the 19 children and six siblings who participated in Buddy Break on Saturday. It was a free three-hour activity day at Geneva Baptist Church.

Andrea Koster and Michelle Demaray, both of Geneva, Jaimie Valentini of Elburn and Michelle Frediani of Batavia are the Buddy Break program coordinators.

Koster said the event is intended to give children with special needs and their siblings an afternoon of fun – and to allow their parents to have a break.

“They loved it,” Koster said of both parents and kids who participated in their first event last month. “I had one mom tell me today when she dropped her son off that she had Buddy Break on the calendar, and every day her son would ask, ‘Is it today? Is it today?’ She said this has been the highlight of the year so far for him. And she gets a break, too.”

The various activities were set up in the Sunday school classrooms at the church, giving enough space for each one, yet with ready access for all the children.

looking at books and being with his one-on-one Buddy volunteer, Nicole Lopez of Geneva, Koster’s daughter.

“I am going to school for occupational therapy, and I want to work with kids with special needs once I graduate,” Lopez said. “I figured this is a great opportunity for me to get experience with kids before I start working.”

In the cars, trains and truck room, Claire Rodriguez, 3, of Wheaton, had all the vehicles to herself. The girl clutched a balloon in one hand and a doll in the other while sending small cars and trucks zooming down a curved slide.

The program was a suggestion of parents Deb Abbs of Batavia and Kelli Anderson of St. Charles, with children who have special needs. Nathaniel’s Hope Buddy Break is a national program, Koster said.

This is the second session, and Koster said the church’s goal is to host it once a month all year.

“As long as we have enough volunteers who want to help with us,” Koster said. “We have a few more kids this time, and we already know that our next one that is going to be May 3, we will have even more than this.”

Officials review results from St. Charles resident survey

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Residents feel like St. Charles is moving in the right direction, but economic development is still too slow for them, according to results of the city’s latest survey.

City Administrator Mark Koenen shared the results of the 2013 Priorities Survey on Monday at the Government Services Committee’s regular meeting. The survey was distributed last fall to 1,200 randomly selected households throughout St. Charles. A total of 482 St. Charles residents completed the survey, and that 40 percent response rate represented families throughout the city, Koenen said.

Instead of using an inhouse survey, the city used the National Citizen Survey, which has been used by more than 500 communities in 45 states. Using the national survey allowed the city to compare results from St. Charles to benchmarks created from the 2013 survey results of about 500 communities, Koenen said.

“We are much above average compared to our comparable groups across the nation,” he said.

St. Charles ranked much above or above average on areas of service such as police,

fire and public works. While the electric utility ranked highly, the quality of drinking water received low ratings from residents.

“The comments we receive is that our water is hard,” Koenen said. “Hard water is not a health issue.”

The city made a decision long ago to maintain its current water, but criticism of this increased when Chicago and other suburbs transitioned to soft water, Koenen said.

On economic development, 66 percent of respondents say retail growth as too slow and 82 percent think job growth in St. Charles is too slow. Koenen said these results were likely not surprising to any of the city staff and the committee members at the meeting.

Koenen did not mention any of the current business redevelopment projects in progress in St. Charles, but he did reference an effort the city made to boost hiring. In 2013, the city entered into an agreement with Clarke, an environmental products and services company that offers mosquito control, he said.

As part of Clarke’s efforts to relocate to St. Charles from Roselle, there was an incentive clause wherein the city offered to offset Clarke’s hiring costs if they took on local workers.

Geneva to hire consultant for study on TIF eligibility

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen unanimously recommended approval Monday for a tax increment finance eligibility study and redevelopment project near the intersection of Routes 38 and 25.

Acting as the committee of the whole, aldermen approved a contract for $25,700 for consultants SB Friedman of Chicago to provide consultant services for the project. The City Council will take final action on the recommendation.

The area to be studied centers on State Street from the Fox River to the existing tax increment finance district and includes properties along Route 25.

covers 24 acres starting just east of the downtown, according to the city’s website.

In September, city officials considered the use of a tax increment finance district to assist with the redevelopment of six significant commercial property near the intersection of Routes 38 and 25 that are vacant and deteriorating.

The significant properties are identified as those at 4 E. State St., 113 E. State, 122 E. State, 130 E. State, 206 E. State and 106 N. Bennett St., officials said.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When Leslie Juby’s 17-year-old daughter, Madelyn, went to register to vote in last week’s primary election, she thought it would be simple.

Madelyn Juby, a senior at Geneva High School, went into Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham’s office to register under the grace period – which is up to three days before the election. She had her student photo ID, library card and Social Security card, but she still was told no.

Leslie Juby, a Geneva District 304 School Board member, said several employees told her daughter she could not register because Madelyn Juby did not have an ID with a signature.

A printout of the clerk’s website listing acceptable forms of identification did not include a requirement for an ID with a signature, Leslie Juby said. After Madelyn Juby called her mother, Leslie Juby went to the clerk’s office and asked to be shown where in the state law does it show a photo ID with signature is required.

Juby filed a complaint with the Illinois Board of Elections and contacted Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon about it. Bernadette Harrington, in the office of the general counsel for the state board, said the office had not yet received Juby’s complaint.

She said in all, 12,888 17-year-olds who would be 18 in time for the Nov. 4 general election registered to vote under the new law.

Cunningham said he did not know about Juby’s complaint and could not comment.

According to the clerk’s website, www.kanecountyelections.org, those registering to vote are required to provide two forms of identification, one of which must include the current name and residence address.

Identification shall include, but is not limited to, a driver’s license, Social Security card, employee or student ID card, credit, library or insurance card, selective service card, civic, fraternal, union or professional association membership card, a utility bill or checkbook, according to the clerk’s website.

According to Juby’s complaint letter, eventually a deputy clerk said Madelyn Juby could register using the last four digits of her Social Security number.

“Which is what she had originally provided,” Juby’s letter stated. “My daughter was then able to register and vote. I wonder how many people are prevented from registering to vote because employees of the clerk’s office are unaware of the legal requirements.”

Leslie Juby said by making a formal complaint, the clerk’s employees would receive more training.

“I just want to make sure they train everybody and that nobody gets turned away,” she said. “I did not write this letter to get anybody in trouble.”

Michael G. Huston, of the 300 block of Walnut Street, St. Charles, faces charges of residential burglary, a Class 1 felony, and possession of burglary tools, a Class 4 felony.

The charges stem from the March 17 incident in which a homeowner in the 38W000

block of Mallard Lake Road in unincorporated St. Charles Township shot an intruder, police said.

Huston received treatment at Delnor Hospital before his release Saturday, when he was taken to the Kane County Adult Justice Center, Gengler said.

Huston remained in custody Monday afternoon but had not yet attended bond call, Gengler said.

The homeowner was not charged in the incident, Gengler said. Police have said the homeowner has a valid Illinois FOID card.

Soda tax would target obesity Opponents say education would be better way to address issue

The Healthy Eating Active Living Act proposes to place a penny-per-ounce excise tax on sugary beverages, which include beverages with added caloric sweeteners such as soda, fruit drinks, sweetened teas and coffees and energy and sports drinks. Diet or no-calorie drinks, milk or milk substitutes and unsweetened seltzer water would be exempt.

In other words, a 12-ounce can of pop or a 12-ounce sports drink would go up 12 cents.

The act, introduced in February in twin bills sponsored by state Rep. Robyn Gabel, D-Evanston, and state Sen. Mattie Hunter, D-Chicago, is estimated to raise more than $600 million in the first year of the tax for prevention and health care.

State Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, is opposed to the tax. He believes that education is a more effective way of curbing obesity.

State Rep. Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago, also opposes the bill.

“This is a product that’s already taxed,” he said. “We already have that problem with motor fuels, where we tax the tax. There are two different taxes on motor fuels, and I think that’s a problem.

It’s one of the things that causes us to have the highest gas prices in the Midwest.”

And he also doesn’t think that increasing the price of sugar-sweetened beverages will necessarily stop people from buying them. He used cigarettes as a comparison.

“The education probably does more to discourage smokers than the price of a pack,” Fortner said. “The fact that we educate, the fact that we’ve done a good job promoting the health risks – I think that does a lot more than just saying we’re going to put a tax on it.”

The bill was introduced with the support of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity. Proponents contend the increased purchase price for sugary beverages will reduce consumption by about 23 percent in the first year of implementation.

Dr. Frank Chaloupka, professor of economics at the University of Illinois at Chicago, testified during a recent Illinois Senate Public Health Committee about a study he authored that found the proposed excise tax could reduce childhood obesity by

9.3 percent, diabetes by 3,400 new cases and save taxpayers more than $150 million in state and private health care spending in the first year of the tax.

According to the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity, one in three children in the state are overweight or obese and nearly one in 12 Illinoisans have been diagnosed with diabetes.

“I think this is a really exciting bill because it’s multifaceted in the way that the problem of obesity is multifaceted,” said Elissa Bassler, CEO of the Illinois Public Health Institute, the convening organization of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity.

Half of the revenue generated by the tax would go into a wellness fund to support initiatives that promote such things as physical activity, school health and wellness,

access to healthy foods and obesity prevention. The other half of the funds will support the state’s Medicaid program.

“There’s a cost to society of obesity, of these health care costs,” Bassler said. “This helps to place those costs where they belong.”

The Kane County Health Department hasn’t taken a stance on the bill, said Michael Isaacson, assistant director of community health for the Kane County Health Department. But he added “that we support efforts to reduce people’s consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.”

“There was an article recently in The Journal of the American Medical Association that provided more evidence of a link between the amount of added sugar people have in their diet and dying from cardiovascular disease,” Isaacson said.

Isaacson said sugar-sweetened beverages are also “the number one of beverage calories, which is completely unnecessary.”

“We would much prefer to see kids drinking more water, or healthier low-fat dairy,” he said.

The Thirsty Fox Pub, at 104 E. Main St., received two viola-

tions, with an employee cited for sale of liquor to a minor.

St. Charles Bowl, 2520 W. Main St., received one violation, and one of its employees was cited as well, the release said.

Members of the police department, along with two 19-year-old civilian special agents, inspected 23 business-

es in all, police said. Congratulatory letters of compliance from Interim Police Chief Steve Huffman will be delivered to the 21 businesses that passed the inspection, police said.

Thirsty Fox employee Raymond Melvin Stone, 31, of the 200 block of Countryside Park-

way, Yorkville, and St. Charles Bowl employee Jeffrey P. Trombetta, 26, of the 100 block of Walnut Drive, St. Charles, each were served with a notice to appear at 9 a.m. April 24 at the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles.

asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – When Batavia third-graders Alice Neville and Regan Recklaus decided to hold a bingo fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, they envisioned it taking place in a basement.

But – with the help of Facebook, advertising at school and word of mouth – the event quickly turned into some thing bigger than they had imagined.

“Now it’s something huge,” Alice said Sunday as dozens of children and their parents filed into Bethany Lutheran Church in Batavia for the fundraiser.

“I guess it really spread,” Regan said. “It’s really an honor for us.”

Alice, 8, and Regan, 9, are friends determined to help find a cure for muscular dystrophy, a disease Alice has.

Their MDA bingo fundraiser not only surpassed initial attendance expectations, but it also earned the support of businesses. Several donated children’s prizes for the bingo winners and raffle prizes for the parents.

The church donated the space once it learned what it would be used for, said Alice’s mother, Cari Neville. Alice’s father, Mark Neville, said the evolution of the event – which happened over about two weeks – was overwhelming.

Raising money for other kids helps Alice feel like she’s

fighting back against her disease, her mother said. After a few rounds of bingo, Alice and Regan announced they had raised more than $2,200.

Cari Neville thanked the participants and, as is done at MDA events, she encouraged them to show their muscles and say, “Make a muscle.

Make a difference.”

“That’s what you’re doing here today,” she said.

She said that when she talks with Alice about strength, she explains that it doesn’t only come from muscles. It also comes from friends, family and the community, she said.

“We have the strength of all of you,” Cari Neville said, “and we could not be more grateful.”

D.J. Tegeler’s apparent victory over Associate Kane County Judge Marmarie Kostelny to fill an upcoming judicial vacancy has turned out to be closer than the unofficial tally recorded on election night, officials said.

Tegeler, a Geneva attorney, has 6,213 votes, and Kostelny, an Elgin resident, has 6,203 votes, according to totals provided by Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham and the Aurora Election Commission.

Both election jurisdictions have mail-in and other ballots that, once counted, could declare another winner, officials said.

“They are 10 votes apart,” Cunningham said. “But I have 34 absentee ballots that are still out and that do affect this particular race.”

Cunningham said the mail-in ballots have to be postmarked before the day of the primary election, which was March 18, and will be opened and counted April 1.

Linda Fechner, executive director of the Aurora Election Commission, said there are up to 10 ballots concerning this race that could change the results. Three are mailin Republican ballots – with one still not received. Two are grace-period votes, and four are provisional votes, Fechner said.

Grace-period voters were those who registered to vote between Feb. 19 and March 15. Fechner said with the

new voting laws allowing registration and voting up to three days before an election, they mail out voter ID cards to those grace-period voters to make sure they live at the address they provided.

As to provisional ballots, those belonged to people who went to vote on the day of the primary, and their name was not in the book.

“They have until seven days after the election to come in with supporting documentation,” Fechner said.

“Two have come in, and one of the two will not be counted because they were not registered in our jurisdiction after all.”

The other two have until 5 p.m. today to bring in supporting materials, she said, or their votes will not be counted. These ballots will not be cast until April 1, both Cunningham and Fechner said.

Tegeler said he thought it would be a close race – but not this close.

“There’s not a whole lot I can do about it,” Tegeler said.

“I thank all my supporters.

We both fought a clean campaign.”

As to the notion that all votes count, Tegeler said he would be happy to visit a civics class and talk about how important voting is.

“The turnout should be 98 percent, not 18 percent,” Tegeler said.

Kostelny did not return a voicemail message seeking comment. The winner will fill the vacancy left by Judge Karen Simpson, who plans to retire Oct. 6.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM “Ugly jar” is just one of the names for an antique memory jar - and it often is an accurate description. But a homemade memory jar is of interest because it tells a story. The jars can be any shape, but the most popular with collectors today are jars made from 19th-century jugs or bottles. The jug or bottle was covered with a sticky material. It could be plaster, clay, putty or mortar. New ones are often covered with modern epoxy glue. The creator placed small objects like stones, buttons, broken glass, small figurines, watch parts, jewelry, doll heads, coins or even framed daguerreotypes in the plaster. Since the original idea of a memory jug is said to have started in Africa and related to water spirits, shells have long been popular. Traditionally the shells are broken to release the spirit of the deceased who inspired the jug. Today the jugs are considered folk art and sell for $50 to $300 at shows, but a few exceptional antique examples have brought up to $3,000. Most jugs can be dated by examining the things stuck in the plaster. Campaign buttons, coins and toy parts often suggest a date, but remember that new jugs can be made using old parts. A small percentage of old or new jugs are finished with a coat of gold paint or lacquer. Many are pictured online. They may be called forget-me-not jugs, memory vessels, whatnot jars or even by the French name “pique assiette.”

A: Steinway & Co. was founded in New York City by Henry E. Steinway, a German immigrant. He was born Heinrich Steinweg and changed his name when he immigrated in 1850. He and his sons began making pianos under the Steinway & Co. name in 1853. The Nov. 21, 1893, patent is for “improvements in stringframes for upright pianos,” and was granted to Henry Ziegler, a member of the Steinway family. The gold “coins” show that the company held royal warrants, which meant that they made pianos for members of the royal family. Queen Victoria granted the first royal warrant to the company in 1890. The serial number indicates that your piano was made in 1893.

Steinway was bought by Paulson & Co. in September 2013. *** Q: My ceramic mantel clock is about 15 inches high and 13 inches across at the base. It has an ornate shape and is painted in vivid pink, yellow, green and white with large flowers and greenery.

It sold at Old Barn Auction in Findlay, Ohio, for just $72, probably because it had a chip on the lid. it. What can you tell me about this clock and its value?

A: Ansonia Clock Co. was in business in southeastern Connecticut from 1850 to 1929. Royal Bonn is the trade name used on pottery made by Franz Anton Mehlem. He operated a pottery in Bonn, Germany, beginning in 1836.

The number “1755” is the first year a pottery operated on the site. Villeroy & Boch bought the pottery in 1921, but it closed in 1931. The mark on your clock was used from 1890 to 1920 for clocks with Ansonia works and Royal Bonn cases. There are many Ansonia Royal Bonn clocks available. They sell for $500 to $750, depending on condition and the quality of the case and decoration. ***

A: Roseville Pottery Co. was in business in Roseville, Ohio, from 1890 until 1954. The pottery opened another plant in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1898. The pattern of your cornucopia vase is called Zephyr Lily, which was first made in 1946. The pattern was made in Bermuda blue, Evergreen and Sienna Tan. The numbers on the bottom refer to the shape number (203) and the size (6 inches). Value of a single vase is about $50. The pair is worth about $125.

A: Special products that kill mold and mildew or prevent them from forming are available at hardware and home improvement stores. Move the toys into a dry room. Wash surfaces that smell moldy with a mild detergent solution. If that doesn’t get rid of the odor, try using vinegar, water with a little chlorine bleach in it, or a commercial product meant to kill mold. Doll clothes and other textiles should be washed and dried in the normal way. Stuffed toys should be laundered and dried in a dryer at low temperature or dried in the sun. Sunlight helps remove the smell. Store the toys in a dry place that is not exposed to temperature extremes. Basements, attics and garages do not make good storage places for anything of value. *** Tip: Never leave a note outside explaining that you are not at home.

DUANE THAYER Born: June 15, 1930; in Sac County, Iowa Died: March 23, 2014; in Geneva GENEVA – Duane C. “Dewey” Thayer, 83, of Geneva, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born June 15, 1930, in Sac County, Iowa, the son of William Guy and Frances (Wagner) Thayer.

Dewey was raised in Odebolt, Iowa, graduating from Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). He received his master’s degree in education from the University of Iowa. Dewey began his teaching career in Springville, Iowa, where he spent eight years teaching at the junior and senior high school eventually becoming principal. He then moved to Rockford where he was principal at Winnebago High School for two years. Eventually, Dewey and his family moved to Geneva and he accepted the principal position at West Chicago Junior High

School where he spent 23 years.

Dewey also worked at Viking Office Supply for 13 years. He served a term on the Geneva School Board, was past president of the Geneva Community Memorial Center and was a member of the Geneva Lions Club and longtime member of Fox Valley Presbyterian Church. Dewey was an avid New York Yankees and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, enjoyed watching Geneva High School sports and was a strong supporter of girls basketball. He loved reading, traveling, cooking and playing cards.

Some of his fondest memories were spending time at his log cabin in Lake Camelot in Wisconsin. Dewey’s greatest enjoyment in life, however, was spending time with his family.

He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty (Barnes); three daughters, Teri (Bill) Koehn, Julie (Tim) Tokars and Nancy (Terry) Koehn, all of Geneva; eight grandchildren, Lindsey (Trevor) Huettemann of Elburn, Christopher Koehn of Geneva, Jack, Carey and Matt Tokars of Geneva, Ericka (Ben) Sunday of North Aurora and Makayla and Olivia Koehn of Geneva; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. Dewey is also survived by his friend and caregiver, Chris Maningo.

Dewey was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Lyle; brother, Robert Thayer; and granddaughter, Lisa Koehn.

The funeral service for Dewey will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church, 227

East Side Drive in Geneva with Rev. Loy Williams officiating. Burial will be private in Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva. The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva.

Gordon F. Howe, 89, of Geneva, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 23, 2014.

He was born July 3, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Robert and Meta (Kampfer) Howe. Gordon grew up in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago and became a devoted Chicago Cubs fan. He loved other Chicago teams, especially the Chicago Bears and the Blackhawks.

Gordon served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in pharmacy.

Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Helen (Lang); three children, Richard of Geneva, Gail (David) Simpson of St. Charles and Robert of Streamwood; four grandchildren, Jacob (Rachel) Simpson, Rebecca (Brandon) LaBarre, Benjamin Simpson and Madeline Simpson; and two great-grandchildren, Jonah LaBarre and Evangeline Simpson.

Gordon and Helen are members of Hosanna Lutheran Church in St. Charles. Gordon will best be remembered for his kind, gentle and reserved nature. He only had kind words to say about everyone.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

An opportunity to visit with the family will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at Yurs Funeral Home, 1771

One pilot also challenged the role of women. Her name was Amelia Earhart.

When Amelia was a young woman, it was not considered “ladylike” to become a pilot. Very few women had ever learned to fly. But Amelia was raised to be her own person and to follow her heart.

In 1920, she paid $1 for a 10-minute ride in an airplane. “As soon as I left the ground,” she wrote later, “I knew I myself had to fly.” Little did she know that she would become one of the world’s most famous pilots.

Amelia Earhart set many flying records. As a crew member of the Friendship Flight in 1928, she was the first woman ever to fly across the Atlantic.

Monsignor Aaron Brodeski of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia is hopeful that parishioners across the Rockford Diocese will respond well to a “Be Reconciled” day, an initiative to make the sacrament of reconciliation more available this Lenten season.

As part of the initiative, parishes in the 11-county diocese, including Holy Cross Church, will offer confessions from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 9.

A letter announcing the effort was read at all parish Masses on March 1 and 2.

“I think it’s an outstanding idea,” Brodeski said. “It’s nice when we do things on a parish level, but it’s also very nice when we have initiatives like this that go beyond our parish, that really cover our whole Catholic diocese, so all of our parishes do something together. I think that everybody is excited about it.”

He said he is hopeful that many people will take advantage of the opportunity the “Be Reconciled” initiative lends.

“Holy Cross is a nice, active parish, and we are very blessed with a lot of people who take advantage of this sacrament of reconciliation,” Brodeski said. “I have a lot of good confessions here on a regular basis. I think that by making this available at every parish in the diocese all day long, I think it just makes it so extremely convenient for everybody and it just kind of puts an exclamation point, in a sense, behind the importance of this, and it also says that we are ready in making ourselves completely available that day.”

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Can’t afford to be ‘done’ To the Editor: A Geneva resident recently sent me an email entitled “I’m Done.” This resident recently spent many hours of his personal time developing a solution to the massive $300+ million debt the Geneva School District is carrying.

In his own words, this is why he is giving up: “I know I will never be heard by this board, nor can [I] make any difference. Banging against a brick wall is old and hurts. We are likely moving back to our home state. The business signals and schools are a key part, and apathy by parents and neighbors all figure in.”

At least 16 businesses have recently closed in Geneva. No doubt some of these closings were a direct result of high property taxes. It seems every day another local business says, “I’m done.”

Five years ago, I helped form a group whose goal was to inform local homeowners and businesses how their tax dollars are spent. That group has evolved into Geneva TaxFACTS. No matter your opinion of the group, we have achieved our goal of educating the community.

As spokesperson for Geneva TaxFACTS, I quickly realized two things: board members and employees of taxing bodies don’t like to be questioned, and the apathy in Geneva is appalling.

Without taxpayer participation, taxing bodies and elected board members can easily begin to feel unaccountable for their actions.

To ensure taxing bodies and board members are accountable to the community, the community must be involved. I can’t tell you the number of people who have attended local meetings, realized they have no voice and – out of frustration – vowed

never to return. This leads to the reality that if taxing bodies aren’t held accountable, they will do whatever they want.

With only a few people involved, nothing will change.

Businesses are leaving this community because high taxes are harming Geneva.

Geneva TaxFACTS will continue to observe and be involved, but a few people can’t do it all. Individual community members need to show up at meetings and speak up when needed. They need to write or call the board members and tell them they aren’t happy with the direction being taken.

Should, can U.S. fight Putin on energy politics?

THE WASHINGTON POST Debate has raged over whether the United States can fight Vladimir Putin on the Russian president’s most favorable ground: energy politics.

It can, and it should, particularly because there’s an obvious path forward that coincides with the United States’ – indeed, the world’s – economic interests. That path is lifting irrational restrictions on exports and making it easier to build natural gas export terminals.

For years, Putin has used his nation’s wealth of oil and natural gas as a cudgel to bully his neighbors. At present, the European Union’s

large imports of Russian natural gas discourage a forceful Western response to Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the United States is tapping massive reserves of unconventional natural gas. That has not only made the U.S. self-sustaining in gas, but it also has driven down the price of U.S. gas to a point well below what Europeans are paying for the Russian stuff. If the federal government allowed more of it to be liquefied and exported, would the Russians lose a share of the European market?

The story is more complicated than that. Russian gas, which doesn’t need to be liquefied to move (by pipeline)

into the European market, would enjoy significant price advantages over imported U.S. gas. The interaction of private buyers and sellers would probably direct U.S. exports to places where gas is more profitable to sell, such as Japan and Korea.

The result would be a bounty for the U.S. economy and an improved American trade deficit – but not much direct displacement of Russian gas in Europe.

But that’s also not the end of the story. The U.S. entry into the Asian market would diminish Russia’s opportunity to profit there, as it aims to do. Contributing to an already widening and more diverse global supply of liquefied

natural gas would also give European importers more flexibility in sourcing their fuel – from the United States, Qatar, or others – the sort of market conditions that have already enabled Europeans to renegotiate gas contracts with Russia. The Council on Foreign Relations’ Michael Levi points out that Putin might end up with an uncomfortable choice between maintaining market share in Europe and slashing his prices more.

Ramping up U.S. exports would take years, but the effects would not only be longterm, as some critics charge.

Action that communicates a certain intent to allow more liquefied natural gas exports would send a signal that “the

U.S. is open for business,” as the Eurasia Group’s Leslie Palti-Guzman puts it. That could deter Putin from playing the energy card and help many buyers in negotiating long-term contracts.

The economic case for allowing natural gas exports is compelling on its own.

Doing so would bring money into the country and uphold the vital principle that energy resources should flow freely around the globe, making the markets for the fuels the world economy needs as flexible and robust as possible.

The more major suppliers there are following that principle, the less control predatory regimes such as Putin’s will have over the market.

So what could possibly prompt longtime coach Matt Holm to nearly turn on the waterworks before the Bulldogs even threw or saw their first pitch this spring?

An offseason project costing almost $200,000 saw the construction of new dugouts and the installation of a concrete backstop and 30-foot screen behind home plate, accoutrements that have only augmented Batavia’s optimism.

“I stood out here by myself one day and almost cried just looking at it, knowing how long it’s been just trying to get this thing going,” Holm said. “And the people that we’ve had supporting it.”

A former Bulldog entering his 23rd season as coach of his alma mater, Holm calls the effort one he’s been pushing “for the better part of 15 years.”

Rumors of expanding Batavia’s athletic facilities to nearby Mooseheart property were usually what curtailed talks – and action.

Demolition began Nov. 9, the same day a handful of Bulldogs played with the football team in a Class 6A second-round playoff game at Rolling Meadows. Batavia-based Eagle Concrete, owned by the family of sophomore baseball coach Craig Martin, headed the project.

That’ll work for now: While St. Charles East finished in the second half of the team standings in Friday’s 14-team UEC boys meet, the Saints still were beaming about plenty of performances.

“Where’d this speed come out of all of us?” senior Mike Skora said after helping the Saints to a second-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay in 8:24.82.

The meet offered a barometer, and challenging eventual UEC champion Neuqua Valley in that race encouraged the Saints about moving up come outdoor season.

“We were just out there to compete today. That’s it. We were trying to just get past people and hold that position,” Skora said. “That was our goal.

Our goal was to compete, not time at all, and we did that.”

Senior first baseman Micah Coffey, the third of four brothers to come through the school, is especially eager to take the field. “To see some progress being made, it definitely generates a lot of energy, especially

within the team, within the community,” Coffey said.

“Just seeing something happen with our baseball program, it’s just exciting.”

Holm cited the facilities at conference rivals St. Charles East and St. Charles North as an aesthetic model.

Once games begin, he and players are confident the field will develop a personality all its own.

“When you get everybody pushing in the right direction, you finally get something done,” Holm said.

Track and field athletes definitely are primed to take it outside in April, but various indoor conference meets over the weekend proved the outdoors aren’t the only thing that has to be great.

Here’s a look at some highlights from girls and boys conference competitions in the Upstate Eight and Northern Illinois Big 12. The indoor season ends with the Illinois Prep Top Times meet at Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington on Friday and Saturday.

Kaneland rolls: The Kaneland boys and girls swept the Northern Illinois Big 12 titles at Sterling’s Westwood Sports Complex on Saturday.

“We like where we’re at considering we haven’t gotten a lot of work outside yet due to our lack of facilities,” Knights boys coach Eric Baron said.

“A lot of this is off of strength and speed right now.”

For the boys, Nate Dyer’s sizable personal record to win the discus (55 feet, 5 inches) provided the turning point that helped Kaneland place in all but two events.

“Kind of got the ball rolling for us really early,” Baron said.

Remember the name: Entering the final championship heat of the 200 at Saturday’s UEC girls meet, public address announcer Skip Stolley reminded the crowd of the field’s prowess.

Five of the six entrants were state qualifiers, and the only one excluded from the club wasn’t eligible; Batavia freshman Hannah Schlaman still was an eighth-grader last spring.

If need be, Andrews said the field is game-ready should Batavia host Thursday’s season opener against Minooka as scheduled. He then listed another reason fans shouldn’t fret.

“As a spectator of softball and a spectator of lower-level baseball, you’re not going to have to worry about varsity baseballs flying out to you,” Andrews said. “Now we’ve just got to get the rest of them done.”

St. Charles East ties for league title

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Public address announcer Skip Stolley outlined the scenario that would produce a tie between St. Charles East and Neuqua Valley for the Upstate Eight Conference girls indoor track title late in Saturday’s meet.

Moments later, it occurred: the Saints won the 4x400-meter relay to close the day and the Wildcats finished seventh.

While Stolley’s skill as a soothsayer may be up for debate, there was no disagreement regarding East’s demeanor, dual plaques notwithstanding.

“Still excited,” Saints junior Allison Chmelik said. “I think first is still first, so I’m happy with it.”

East and Neuqua both totaled 115 team points, a comfortable distance from Metea Valley (83.5) and St. Charles North (74). The Wildcats

Tim Wolf St. Charles East girls track coach came frustratingly close to winning outright, as their 4x400 anchor leg stumbled down the stretch.

Neuqua also endured offtrack adversity because its entry was in the second-fastest heat based on seed times.

East won the fast finals heat in 4:06:08, with third leg Anastasia Honea securing the lead from Batavia before handing off to Notre Damebound senior anchor Jordan Shead.

“We knew it was close,” second leg Corrin Adams said, “so we just wanted to go and have a good race for the team and enjoy ourselves.”

East claimed three other event wins, including Torree Scull in the 3,200 (11:16.77).

Chmelik took the triple jump with an effort of 37 feet, 6¼ inches, while Shead was victorious in the 400 with a time of 58.36.

Overall, Shead edged Chmelik (1:00.17) for the crown, but she cruised by more than eight seconds in her heat.

Because she had not registered an individual 400 time earlier in the indoor season, Shead was easily the marquee athlete in the first of four races.

North senior Jessica Grill earned the Chronicle area’s only other event title, clearing 10-9 in the pole vault.

Grill also is a top girls golfer in the fall, just one among North’s solid core of multisport athletes that also in-

cludes Northwestern softball recruit Sabrina Rabin in the sprints. The latest to join the club, Quinn Samanic, is just a few weeks removed from helping the North Stars’ drill team to the 3A Team Dance Illinois grand championship.

“People have just been telling me I was fast, so I was like, ‘I should just give track a try and see how I like it,’ ” said Samanic, a sprinter and high jumper in only her second meet. “And I really like it.”

Batavia and Geneva both were missing athletes because of illness or other commitments but still delivered some memorable performances.

Bulldogs freshman Hannah Schlaman placed a narrow second in the 55 (7.44) and fifth in the 200.

“I think once everything gets going for outdoor season, we’ll see a lot more success from everyone,” Bulldogs coach Justin Allison said.

Geneva coach Peter Raak, “pleasantly surprised” by a handful of PRs as well as Shannon Callahan’s runner-up effort in the high jump (4-11), echoed that sentiment.

“They competed very well, they’re getting lots of experience for outdoors, so we’ve got a lot to work with, a lot to build off of,” Raak said.

Whether due to absence, illness or injury, each of the 12 teams on hand used lineups that likely won’t match the ones on display for the outdoor conference meet in May. The Saints are awaiting the return of Chmelik’s twin, Elizabeth, who is battling hip troubles. East’s resilience delighted coach Tim Wolf all the more.

Mills earns bonus: Heading into last summer’s training camp, right tackle Jordan Mills was considered the backup right tackle to J’Marcus Webb, and a project to start down the line. Instead, he won the job after the first preseason game and wound up starting all 16 games.

Now, Mills will get rewarded for outperforming his draft slot in the form of a performance-based bonus, and it’s the highest in the NFL, according to multiple reports.

According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, the league has a pool of $3.46 million to “reward players who make the least and play the most.”

Mills, who made a base salary of $495,000 in 2013, will get

a performance-based bonus of $318,243. He played every snap of the season until the first series of Week 17 against the Packers, when Mills had to leave the game after injuring his foot.

According to the Bears’ website, the list of other Bears to get performance-based pay is (in order) Chris Conte ($210,957), Isaiah Frey ($179,411), Zack Bowman ($162,273), Jon Bostic ($143,309), Matt Slauson ($134,485), Dante Rosario ($126,156), Alshon Jeffery ($121,902) and David Bass (($111,228).

The checks for the bonuses won’t come until April 1, 2016.

Quintana, Sox agree on 5-year deal

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanschouwen@suntimes.com PEORIA, Ariz. – With Jose Quintana and Chris Sale under club control through 2020 and 2019, respectively, the White Sox now have the top two pieces of their starting rotation pieces locked in for a good, long while.

A $26.5 million, five-year deal for Quintana, 25, which includes club options for 2019 and 2020 that could bring the total to $47.5 million, was announced Monday. As in Sale’s case, the Sox didn’t have to give Quintana big bucks yet – he likely would have been under team control for five years – but it seems worth any arm-injury risks on the Sox’s part to have those pitchers’ services paid for at a price that figures climb out of the Sox’s reach down the road.

“It not only rewards them for the hard work they have done, the success they have had, but it allows us to have come cost certainty and obviously extending control,’’ general manager Rick Hahn said.

“It frees us up to allocate our re-

sources to other needs, which is beneficial, and takes a couple of other things off our to-do list, which is always nice.”

Sale signed a $32.5 million extension last spring. In the likely event Quintana is eligible for Super 2 arbitration status after the season, his total guaranteed dollars would break down this way: $850,000 in 2014, $3.4 million in ’15, $5.4 million in ’16, $7 million in ’17 and $8.85 million in ’18. The Sox hold options for 2019 at $10.5 million and for 2020 at $11.5 million. Quintana gets a $1 million buyout if either option is declined.

“That’s a lot of money. But I want to focus on games,” Quintana said. “The money, my family is happy with that.

I talked to them and they’re so happy. I want to say thank you to the Chicago White Sox for this opportunity to be here a long time.”

Quintana’s rise to being a bona fide No. 2 or 3 starting pitcher has been quick. A repeatable delivery, adaptability to coaching, willingness to work and poise all factored into his development that placed

him first among American League left-handers in starts, third in runners per nine innings and fifth in ERA. Last season, he was 9-7 with a 3.51 ERA over 200 innings pitched. Until Sunday, he had a sketchy spring, not lasting more than three innings, taking a batted ball off his shin that forced an early exit and then getting shelled two starts ago.

On Sunday, everything was right again in Quintana’s world. He pitched five scoreless innings of one-hit ball against the Rockies, a significant outing considering he had faced nine Oakland A’s his previous start without retiring a single batter. It turns out the contract discussions were close to being finalized when he faced the A’s, and it weighed on his mind.

“That one’s probably on me,” Hahn said. “He either thought that we were still considering the final deal or that we had said ‘OK’ to the final deal, but he needed to get through that outing and pass a physical before it became official. That’s a lot for someone to handle.”

The beauty of Jay Cutler’s new contract is that it reportedly allowed the Bears to make adjustments for cap space at any time, and they did so recently.

NFLPA records confirm that Cutler’s base salary for 2014 is now $17.5 million, a $5 million reduction from the $22.5 million.

As first reported by Brian McIntyre, the $5 million was converted into a signing bonus, and that lowers Cutler’s 2014 cap number to $18.5 million, which creates $4 million in cap space for this year. The restructuring does increase Cutler’s cap charge $1 million in each of the next four years (the bonus is prorated for cap

purposes).

Even at $17.5 million, Cutler still has the highest base salary in the NFL for 2014, $2.35 million more than Eli Manning (per Spotrac).

The new cap hit is now the fifth-highest cap number in the league; it originally was first.

The Bears will need about $5 million to Jay Cutler sign their rookie class and they likely are not done adding veterans to the team.

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com Ben Smith’s dad is a composer and a professor of composition at the University of Hartford. His mom, a former concert pianist, teaches piano at a girls prep school in Connecticut.

His oldest brother is a professional oboist, touring the country. His uncle is the music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Smith played guitar and trombone growing up. And although he is sheepish about admitting it, he sang bass in high school, too.

So if national-anthem singer Jim Cornelison gets a last-minute bout of laryngitis, the Blackhawks can turn to the bench for a replacement.

“Oh, I hope not,” Smith said with a laugh. “Hopefully, they’ll get someone else to do that.”

Heck, why not? It’s about the only role Smith hasn’t filled with the Hawks. From shutdown fourth-line winger and penalty-killer to his new role as the front-of-the-net presence on the power play to his recent stint as Patrick Kane’s center, Smith – who made the team out of training camp largely because he would have had to clear waivers to be sent back to Rockford – has established himself as one of coach Joel Quenneville’s most versatile and reliable weapons.

“Benny started off all right, but I’ve seen a real nice progress to his individual game all year long,” Quenneville said.

The culmination of that progress was his surprise shot at filling the long-standing void at second-line center.

Smith made the most of it, posting a goal and an assist in a victory against the Detroit Red Wings and winning 11 of 15 faceoffs in his two full games in that spot. It was the chance Smith had been waiting for his whole career.

BULLS NOTES

Then came Kane’s knee injury, and Smith’s big opportunity was gone. He was dropped back down to the third line with Peter Regin and Jeremy Morin.

“It’s a little frustrating or disappointing, I guess,” Smith said. “But injuries happen. It’s tough for our team – not just for me, but for everyone – that Patrick’s not playing right now. You never really know what’s going to happen. It was great to have that opportunity to play with him, and hopefully, it possibly could happen again. But, for me, it’s always kind of been game by game.”

Game by game, year after year. Since winning two national championships in four years at Boston College, Smith patiently has waited his turn.

At the end of his first season in the minors, Smith was called up for the 2011 playoffs and scored three goals in a seven-game loss to the Vancouver Canucks. But it wasn’t the breakthrough moment he hoped for. He played only 13 games with the Hawks in 2011-12 and only one last season before becoming a last-minute replacement for Marian Hossa in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final – enough to get his name etched on the Cup. Now, at 25 – four months older than Kane and three months younger than Jonathan Toews – and at the end of his second NHL contract, Smith finally is the every-game NHL player he expected to be. Smith, who credited his love of the Hartford Whalers for inspiring him to play hockey, said he never doubted he would get there.

“If there ever was that much doubt, then it never would have happened,” he said. “You just have to believe that whatever you go through, if you keep pushing and working hard, that it’s going to work out in the end.”

“You’re supposed to be frustrated after a loss,’’ Noah said. “Everybody’s frustrated after a loss, you know?

VIEWS Tom Musick of workers who worked to help prepare the 100-yearold stadium for its April 4 home opener, a massive project that seemed at least as daunting as morphing a last-place team into a World Series contender.

“It’s like Noah trying to get the ark ready in two days,” Fritsche said with a laugh. “That’s about how I would describe it to you, brother.”

Except, instead of loading animals two at a time, Fritsche and his fellow workers spent most of their afternoon unloading piles of snow 30 cubic yards at a time.

Perhaps you’ve heard. It snowed a lot here this winter. Mother Nature apparently was mad at somebody

– maybe she took exception to Dale Sveum’s firing? – so she dumped about 79 inches of snow (and counting) to make all of us suffer.

Here’s the thing, though.

Baseball season arrives every spring, regardless of how pleasant or how painful the winter has been. You need a clean field to play baseball, and if you’re in the business of filling seats, you need those seats to be clean, too.

So, next thing you know, you’re calling a bunch of contractors and subcontractors. Because somebody has to get the park ready before the team returns from spring training in Arizona.

“It’s been a mess,” said Eric Clark, a retail worker who has watched crews prepare the stadium from across the street at Wrigleyville Sports. “Seeing it finally starting to come into place is amazing.”

credit to Fritsche, whose day started when he left his house at 4:30 a.m. for the long commute to the North Side. Fritsche’s shift didn’t start until 8 a.m., but he wanted to beat the inevitable, insufferable traffic jam into the city.

The plan worked as Fritsche arrived about 6 a.m. and had two hours of downtime before his work began. When it did, he started a long day of driving in circles.

The pattern went like this: Crews cleared piles of snow out of the stadium and dumped them on to the sidewalk along Sheffield Avenue, just below the rightfield bleachers. Then more workers used shovels and front-end loaders to scoop the piles of dumped snow and lift them into Fritsche’s trailer.

ward a nearby lot where he could dump the snow. Most of it was dirty brown and frozen into large chunks, resembling something like baseball gloves for giant snowmen.

After Fritsche dumped the snow, he returned to Wrigley for another load. All told, he and his coworkers estimated that they hauled 20 to 30 trailers’ worth.

Not bad for one day’s work.

Now, as for the painting and the sodding and the stocking and the staffing and everything else that needs to happen before the Cubs’ home opener … Fritsche smiled.

“They’ve got a lot of work to do,” Fritsche said. “But they’ll get it done.”

A funny scene unfolded Monday outside of Wrigley Field, even if no tourists stopped to snap pictures with their cellphones. To the left sat a statue of a young Santo, baseball in hand, ready to snap a throw across the diamond. To the right sat a statue of a lean Williams, following through with his sweet swing, watching a hit take flight.

And in the middle sat the living version of Fritsche, of Wauconda, who parked his semi-trailer squarely between the statues and waited for his next short-distance haul. He was one of dozens

Review your lens options for cataract surgery Dear Doctor K: I’m having cataract surgery in a few weeks.

There are so many options for replacement lenses. Which one should I choose?

Dear Reader: I can’t tell you which you should choose, since I don’t know the specifics of your cataract. But I can suggest how you should think about several options that your ophthalmologist is likely to discuss with you.

First, the basics. A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Over time, it can cause a disabling loss of vision.

Surgical removal of the clouded lens is the only effective cure for a cataract. In most cases, the surgeon replaces the clouded lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

As you noted, there are several options for replacement lenses.

The most popular are monofocal IOLs. These lenses are designed to focus at one set distance: far, intermediate or near. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a figure that illustrates these “zones of vision.”) Standard monofocal IOLs lack the ability to accommodate. That’s the ability to change focus from near to far and back again.

Still others choose a lens that focuses about 18 to 36 inches away because they spend a lot of time at a computer, and that’s about how far away the screen is from their eyes.

If, like most people, you choose a lens that’s good for distance vision, you probably will need to use reading glasses. And vice versa if you choose a lens that’s good for close vision.

If you need cataract surgery on both eyes, and choose monofocal IOLs but hope to be less dependent on glasses, consider a technique called monovision.

Monovision involves implanting an IOL for near vision in one eye and an IOL for far vision in the other eye. For many years I did this – but with contact lenses, not IOLs (I didn’t have cataracts then). It worked fine for me.

Many people find the adjustment to monovision quite

challenging, if not impossible.

That’s because reducing your binocular vision (your ability to use both eyes together) changes your depth perception. If you are considering monovision, try it out with contact lenses before your cataract surgery. Monovision is not an ideal option if you require crisp, detailed vision.

One approach is to forgo traditional monofocal IOLs. Instead, consider specialized, non-monofocal IOLs. There are several options in this category.

For example, accommodating IOLs allow you to change focus between middle and distance vision, but they aren’t as reliable for near vision.

Another option, multifocal IOLs, is similar to bifocals or progressive eyeglasses. These lenses include different areas designed for distance, intermediate and near vision. Just as people with progressive eyeglasses require just one pair of glasses for seeing things at all distances, the same is true with multifocal IOLs.

Dear Teens: Growing up is no guarantee that you will outgrow the rivalry you have with your brothers or sisters.

“I know people in their 60s and 70s who are still jealous of their brothers and sisters, people who feel their entire lives might have been different if only their parents had loved them more,” says Dr. Maury Lacher, a clinical psychologist.

Quite often, he explained, an older child is jealous of the younger one because he or she gets to spend more time with their mother. Or sometimes jealousy is sparked by a sibling who is a better student, more outgoing, or has more dates.

Says one teen who is envious of her talented younger sister, “My jealousy takes the form of sometimes being angry or short-tempered with her. Then I get angry for being angry because I know I shouldn’t feel that way.”

As a general rule, people become jealous when they don’t have a chance of getting what someone else has. When someone you know wins an award or does well in class, one reaction is to say, “I’m really happy for you,” says Lacher. “The other is to be reminded of your own deprivations. But allowing someone else’s success to make you feel bad about yourself is essentially immature.”

Immature or not, this kind of jealousy between brothers and sisters can persist into adulthood unless the feelings are recognized. A crucial step in escaping from such jealousy is to admit that you feel it and try to understand why. Since brothers and sisters continue to be a part of your life, the sooner you overcome the problem, the more you’ll benefit from this special rela-

Of course, you can’t expect that you’ll never feel jealous again. But you can learn to look beyond it and acknowledge what’s really bothering you, since jealousy is a symptom of an insecurity.

Whether your jealousy is most often triggered by a sibling or a friend, there’s only one way to overcome the problem: • Pinpoint the real cause of your jealousy.

• No matter how difficult it seems, discuss your feelings with the person you are envious of.

• Focus on your own good points and successes the next time you start to envy someone else.

• Get involved in a project that will use your talents and frustrated energies so you don’t feel jealous about another’s accomplishments.

Dr. Wallace: I have a problem getting to sleep at night. This may sound funny, but I count sheep every night, and I usually count into the thousands before I doze off. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day – no catnaps allowed. A good sleep inducer is a warm bath and a glass of warm low-fat milk.

Dear Abby: My daughter is being married soon, and I need some guidance about inviting my aunt and uncle to the wedding. They live about 30 miles from us. We moved to this area four years ago, and we’ve had them over for dinner once and invited them another time. They declined because they were going to be out of town.

Abby, they didn’t reciprocate, and in fact, didn’t even invite us to their daughter’s wedding, which hurt us very much. I had always considered myself close to these relatives before we moved here, so their treatment of my family and me has been painful.

My mother is telling me to turn the other cheek despite everything and invite them to my daughter’s wedding. My daughter doesn’t want them to attend and neither does my husband, but Mom is emphatic about inviting them “because they’re family.”

This is one auction that always mystifies less experienced players. By an unpassed hand, after partner’s takeout double and responder’s pass, if advancer (the doubler’s partner) makes a simple suit-bid, it shows some 0-8 points; a jump in a suit is approximately 9-11; and a cue-bid of the opener’s suit indicates 12 points or more. After South’s cue-bid, the auction turns to natural.

Declarer’s only problem is in the trump suit. He must avoid two losers. In this case, the bidding should help him, but the right play is the same, even if during the auction the opponents gave excellent impersonations of Trappist monks.

If South starts with a finesse of his queen, West wins with his king, and declarer has a nasty guess on the second round. Should he finesse East for the jack or play for West to have started with king-jack-doubleton?

Instead, South should first cash his spade ace. When the king drops, he can bring home an overtrick. But even if the ace collects only the five and six, declarer can cross to dummy and lead a spade toward his queen. He has no guess to make.
