St. Charles launches branding effort

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – City officials and the Downtown St. Charles Partnership on Monday kicked off a new branding effort to promote St. Charles.

Paul Lencioni, president of the Blue Goose Market in St. Charles and a former partnership board member, introduced the brand tagline “St. Charles – Discover Your City Side.”

The tagline was unveiled Monday at a news conference attended by about 25 people at the St. Charles Municipal Building.

The partnership and city officials started working on the branding effort in January 2013.

About six months afterward they hired firm MindsView Innovation to help them tell the story of St. Charles, said Lynne Schwartz, the partnership’s executive director.

“The tag line speaks to our story – St. Charles as a lively urban oasis where old meets new,” Lencioni said at the news conference.

Geneva council reverses panel’s decision; demolition of school to be allowed

Historic Preservation Commission’s denial last week to allow demolition of the former Sixth Street School site.

Aldermen voted 8-1 with

one absent. First Ward Alderman Mike Bruno voted “no” and 1st Ward Alderman Charles Brown was absent.

The request for demolition

came from Kane County as part of a deal to sell the property to the Geneva Public Library so they would have a site for a new library to be built.

LightWorks Energy comes to St. Charles

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A business offering therapy for stress reduction and relaxation has made its way to St. Charles.

LightWorks Energy began operating out of Tranquility Spa and Wellness Center, at 113 N. Second Ave., St. Charles, in December. LightWorks owner Isabel Andrews also works out of a Naperville location, but she currently is focused on growing a Tri-Cities customer base.

At LightWorks, Andrews offers a Japanese energy wellness technique known as Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”).

The technique involves using a light touch – as if someone had gently placed a hand on someone else’s arm – on fully-clothed clients to help them heal.

People have come to Andrews with various ailments, such as anxiety attacks, preand post-surgical care, headaches and more. During the therapy, she said patients describe the effect as a feeling of warmth or comfortable tingling.

The actual effectiveness of Reiki is measured by the change in clients’ symptoms and whether their goals to reduce pain are being met, Andrews said.

“I think there’s a lot of misconception,” Andrews said. “Reiki is really very applicable for everyday life situations … whether they be physically, mental, emotional or spiritual.”

Andrews was a skeptic herself of the technique before she saw her first Reiki practitioner about seven years ago.

She had difficulty recovering from the C-section delivery of her daughter, Paloma. “[The practitioner] just blew my mind with how she was able to assess what had happened to me without me telling her,” Andrews said.

Andrews sought out someone who could teach her the technique, and now she is a Reiki master, as well as a

student of healing touch, a nurturing energy therapy.

She has been practicing since 2010, and LightWorks Energy became a professional practice in 2012.

Even with their benefits, neither Reiki nor healing touch are seen as substitutes to traditional medicine practices, Andrews said.

“I encourage them to always take a team approach to their wellness,” she said of her clients.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Rowing Club has a new home, but the group has plenty of work to do before the actual move-in day.

The Kane County Board on Nov. 10 approved an agreement with the club for use of land at the Fox River Bluff East in the St. Charles Township area.

The club has long-term plans to develop the 35-acre property with paved paths, docks and eventually a $4 million boathouse and possibly an $1 million indoor rowing tank, said Chris Meldrum, the club’s founder and director of the its juniors division.

“I believe this will be great for St. Charles and Kane County,” Meldrum said. “It’s just a question of funding. We’re a not-for-profit rowing program, and we just need the financial support.”

The club plans to schedule river and preserve cleanup days, which require Kane County Forest Preserve District approval.

“We’re all about in-kind donations or volunteering,” Meldrum said.

The rowing club has grown since its December 2012 launch into serving 30-plus students from the Tri-Cities and various cities in DuPage County and other counties.

It’s not uncommon for members to be recruited to row at various college and universities, Meldrum said.

One member currently being courted is Hailey Borden of Geneva. She and Jennifer Schreiber of Clarendon Hills on Sunday tried out for the junior national rowing team but won’t know the results until later this month.

RowAmerica St. Charles has about 40 members on its 22-and-over masters team, and about 25 members on its juniors team, said Libby Scarlatos, the group’s director.

The group currently launches its boats at Ferson Creek Park, located between Routes 31 and 25 on the Fox River.

RowAmerica St. Charles officials in 2014 began talks with the St. Charles Park District about opening a boathouse at the park. Building discussions will pick up down the road as membership grows, Scarlatos said.

“It’s definitely something we’re working toward,” Scarlatos said.

A series of improvements scheduled for Ferson Creek, including the installation of a dock for kayaks and canoes, is in limbo since the state suspended grants to local parks and museums, said Laura Rudow, the park district’s superintendent of parks and planning.

“If the decision in Springfield changes, we’ll have a bid ready to go on the street [for the improvements],” Rudow said.

Garage fire causes $60K in damage

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com WAYNE – A garage fire that caused an estimated $60,000 in damage early Saturday evening remains under investigation, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the incident, which fire crews first received as a report at 6:28 p.m. Saturday of a structure fire with a large column of smoke. The garage is in the 33W700 block of White Thorne Road in Wayne, according to a news release from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District.

Upon arrival at 6:34 p.m.

Saturday, firefighters found a large, single-story ranch home with a fully involved fire in a large three-car garage, the release states. Fire crews confirmed all occupants were out of the house at the time. “[The] fire was impinging on the home on the west side of the garage and beginning to ignite siding/roof components on the home,” fire officials wrote in the release.

Firefighters used a deck gun to provide an initial knockdown of the fire, and it eventually was extinguished.

The garage already had begun to collapse from the fire damage and was “totally destroyed,” according to the release.

“A couple of guys were saying it was the hottest fire they’ve experienced,” said Greg Benson, the district’s fire chief, in a phone interview.

“The heat coming off that thing was incredibly intense.”

The fire was under control by 7:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the release. The provided damage estimate was $40,000 of property damage and $20,000 of damage to the contents.

Greg Benson Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District fire chief was damaged by the extreme heat from the fire before the firefighters’ arrival, the release states. There was minimal damage to the roof and siding of the home.

“The damage to the house was very minor and had nothing to do with the habitable space,” Benson said.

Assistance was provided to the family at the property after the incident, according to the release.

Utility companies and a fire investigator were notified. The Kane County Office of Emergency Management provided traffic, as well as lighting assistance to start the investigation, according to the release.

There was some grill cooking going on under the overhang of the garage a couple of hours before the fire, but as of Sunday afternoon its connection to the blaze was not confirmed, Benson said.

A tender water supply operation had to be set up in the street with pumping to an apparatus at the fire because of the home’s setback of more than 600 feet from White Thorne, the release states.

The fire departments that assisted the district with this incident were Bartlett, East Dundee, Elgin, Pingree Grove, St. Charles, South Elgin, West Chicago and West Dundee, according to the release.

A: Troika Pottery was in business from 1963 to 1983. It was founded by Benny Sirota, Leslie Illsley and Jan Thomson, who took over a pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall, England, in 1963. “Troika” is a Russian sled pulled by three horses and can also be used to describe a group of three people managing a business. The pottery moved to Newlyn, Cornwall, in 1970. By 1980, Illsley was running the pottery alone.

Business declined and the pottery closed in 1983. Pottery was made in modern shapes with both textured and glossy finishes. Pieces with the rough textured finish are more often found than those with the smooth finish. Vases sell for $150 to $500.

Looking for information on a piece you were told is “antique Royal Vienna porcelain”? You’ll find it in “Kovels’ Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide,” and other online sources listed with “beehive” porcelain.

The first mark used by the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in 1744 was actually a line drawing of the outline of a shield. But when turned upside down, it looked like a beehive. Collectors today call the mark a beehive and the porcelain, “Royal Vienna.”

The factory closed in 1864. But since then, porcelains have been made in Germany, Austria, Japan and other Asian countries that are reproductions of the expensive original antique pieces. Be very careful to examine any piece called Royal Vienna or any piece with a beehive mark before you buy it. A December 2014 auction by New Orleans Auction Co. sold a pair of Royal Vienna Porcelain “Kinderkopf” busts that were copies of figures designed by J. J. Kaendler at the German Meissen factory in the 1770s. A figure made by Kaendler in the 18th century would cost thousands of dollars. The pair, sold in New Orleans, were made about 1860 at the Konigliche Porcelain Factory in Berlin and brought $676. *** Q: We inherited an oak bookcase from my grandmother. It has five shelves that can be separated from each other. Each shelf has a lift-up glass door. The bookcase is labeled, “Mission Bookcase Unit, manufactured by The Globe-Wernicke Co., Cincinnati, O.” Please tell us its value.

A: Globe Furniture Co. of Cincinnati bought Wernicke Co. of Minneapolis in 1899 to form the Globe-Wernicke Co. Otto Wernicke had patented his sectional bookcase in 1892 and it became a best-seller for the company. The bookcases, made in oak, ash, walnut or mahogany, became known as “barrister bookcases.” They were sold not only to lawyers, but to librar-

ies, government offices and storefronts.

Today, the bookcases are sought by collectors. A five-shelf unit in excellent condition would sell for more than $1,000. *** Q: I have a hardbound book titled “Walter Keane,” part of the Tomorrow’s Masters Series by Johnson Meyers. It’s a first printing by Johnson Meyer Publishing Company, Redwood City, California and has a copyright date of 1964. Is there any collectible value to this book because of the 2014 movie, “Big Eyes,” depicting the scandal about Walter Keane not painting the pictures sold as his work? I also have the book “MDH Margaret Keane” with the same copyright date.

A: These books originally were sold as a boxed two-volume set. Margaret Keane signed some of her paintings with her initials, MDH, and her last name. Some of these are in the book about her. Walter claimed credit for her paintings of big-eyed children, and those paintings are included in the book about him. The couple divorced in 1965, but it was not until a 1970 radio interview that Margaret revealed that she was the real painter of the “big eye” pictures. The movie has generated interest in the Keanes, and online sources are asking high prices for the books, but they probably will not sell for much more than other used books. A set was offered for sale online for $700, but hasn’t sold yet. *** Q: I bought a brass plate at a tag sale for a very inconsequential amount, thinking it might have a Hitler connection. It has a shield-shaped coat of arms and the word “Berchtesgaden,” and a coat of arms with crossed keys and trefoils with a smaller shield in the middle. The back of the plate has a date scratched on it, “015-05-1838.”

The plate is nine inches across and looks hand hammered. Can you tell me the age and value?

A: The date doesn’t seem to be important in the history of Berchtesgaden but would indicate it was long before it was a retreat for Hitler and other Nazi leaders.

Batavia Chamber of Commerce to hold candidate forum BATAVIA BUSINESS BEAT Holly Deitchman I have received a few questions recently regarding the need for the Batavia Chamber of Commerce to host a school board candidate forum. Why should the chamber of commerce host it? What does that have to do with commerce?

Let’s talk property taxes.

Do business owners pay property taxes to the school district? Yes, if they own the property that houses their business. Even if they don’t own the property, their rent or lease rate is impacted by tax rates. Information from Batavia School District 101 indicates almost 29 percent of school district property tax revenue comes from commercial/industrial properties. So, business owners are concerned about how those funds are being used, as well as whether future budget changes will impact their bottom line.

Now, let’s switch over to the output from our schools.

How often do you see employees at local businesses that are current students

or alumni from Batavia?

Batavia businesses love to hire local talent. There are so many reasons to do so. They don’t have to travel far to get to work, which translates to on-time arrival, are easy to call in at the last minute, and a build sense of community.

When the chamber heard there were eight candidates vying for three positions, the Legislative Affairs Committee knew it had to step in. Its members wrote eight questions, five of which will be selected for the candidate forum. Here is a sample of what may be asked on Wednesday: Whose interests should matter in the governance of a school district? In what ways should they matter? How will you build consensus and support in the community around the work of the school district? Who do you bring with you to the table?

In an era of more limited financial resources, how will you enlist support for bond issues or public school spending from conservative voters or taxpayers with no children in the public schools? How can the school board prove itself accountable to those citizens?

Demolition is expected to take several weeks at the site of the former factory at 715 Hamilton St., Geneva. Richards Street will be closed from Hamilton to Peyton streets during construction hours, officials said.

According to the demolition permit, Property Recycling Service Corp. of North Aurora is doing the work for $128,000. The property owner is the Marquette Companies

of Naperville, also according to the permit.

The Marquette Companies proposed to build a five-story, multi-use building with a parking structure.

The former Cetron factory had made lightbulbs.

The complex would include 140 single-room units, 60 two-room units, 6,500 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and 300 parking spaces, officials said.

The company had a formal concept review at a Committee of the Whole meeting in summer 2014, but no final action has been taken, officials said.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Traffic signals on Randall Road from Fabyan Parkway north to Silver Glen Road will start sporting a flashing yellow arrow on its left turn signals, a county official said.

Geneva aldermen heard a presentation from Kane County traffic permit engineer Stephen Zulkowski on the new kind of traffic signal.

“Why we are doing this – based on engineering studies ... these type of signal arrangements reduces crashes,” Zulkowski said.

Although it will not

change how people drive now, Zulkowski said it will make their ability to turn left at intersections more safe.

A flashing yellow arrow will tell a driver he can continue to turn left, but he has to yield to oncoming traffic, which has a green light, and pedestrians.

The boxes that hold the traffic signals will be changed to yellow, making them easier to see in daylight and at night, he said.

“It will mean turn with caution,” Zulkowski said of the flashing yellow arrow.

The $1.72 million is 90 percent funded with federal safety funds with Kane

County’s 10 percent matching costing at about $316,000, officials said.

“The county is actually getting quite a deal on all these traffic signals,” Zulkowski said.

The flashing yellow arrow is being used in Michigan, Zulkowski said, and in Peoria and eventually will be used throughout the nation.

Construction will start this summer and be finished by late summer or early fall.

Zulkowski said construction work will commence after the morning rush at 9 a.m. and will finish by 3 p.m., so drivers will not be impeded while the work is being done.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 Board members on Monday began discussing the issue of whether start times at St. Charles East and St. Charles North high schools should be pushed back.

The issue was discussed at Monday’s community relations committee meeting. The school day at St. Charles East and St. Charles North high schools currently begins at 7:20 a.m. and ends at 2:21 p.m.

St. Charles parent Sarah Vetter told board members she would like to see the start time pushed back to 8:30 a.m. or 8:45 a.m.

“Sleep is a biological necessity,” Vetter said. “The consequences of sleep deprivation are very serious. It can lead to depression and anxiety.”

Board members were given the results of a three-year study conducted by the University of Minnesota, which showed high schools that start at 8:30 a.m. or later allow for more than 60 percent of students to obtain at least eight hours of sleep per school night.

“Teens getting less than eight hours of sleep reported

significantly higher depression symptoms, greater use of caffeine, and are at greater risk for making poor choices for substance use,” stated the study, issued in February 2014. “Academic performance outcomes, including grades earned in core subject areas of math, English, science and social studies, plus performance on state and national achievement tests, attendance rates and reduced tardiness show significantly positive improvement with the later start times of 8:35 a.m. or later.”

School board member Corinne Pierog said she would like to discuss the idea of pushing back the start time with the whole board.

“I plan to bring it up at a board meeting, to make sure the rest of the board is engaged with this,” Pierog said.

“We have to ensure the whole board is behind this to move this forward.”

School board Vice President Kathleen Hewell said the cost of such a move along with the disruption it could cause would have to be studied.

Board member Edward McNally agreed.

“I’m all for the kids starting later, but at what cost?” McNally said.

“The main arterial roads were completed around lunchtime,” Stahr said. “They were in good shape.”

Friday was the first day of spring, but temperatures will continue to fluctuate this week. There is a 30 percent chance of rain Tuesday, with a high temperature of 37 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 53 degrees Wednesday, according to the forecast, and then fall back to 33 degrees on Friday.

St. Charles woman dies in parking lot crash under investigation by the coroner’s office, the office announced Monday afternoon in a news release.

An autopsy was performed on Hinger on Monday and preliminary findings showed multiple injuries due to her vehicle striking a fixed object, according to the release.

Toxicology samples were sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis, the release states.

ST. CHARLES – An 86-yearold St. Charles woman died Sunday after crashing her car in a Jewel store parking lot, according to St. Charles police.

The woman was identified as Marianne Hinger, 86, of Hunt Club Drive in St. Charles, said Lisa Blackwell, St. Charles police spokeswoman.

The crash occurred at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, outside Jewel in the 600 block Kirk Road, Blackwell said. No one else was injured in the incident.

Hinger was driving south in front of the Jewel – which faces west – when she stopped and allowed some pedestrians to pass, Blackwell said. Then

Hinger accelerated for an unknown reason, striking a median and a tree head-on with her vehicle, Blackwell said.

Paramedics found Hinger unresponsive, performed CPR and then transported her to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where she was pronounced dead at 5:03 p.m. Sunday, according to the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

ST. CHARLES – The Campton Hills man charged in connection to a lockdown at Delnor Hospital in January faces an additional criminal charge for vandalism, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

Justin Bruce Patzer, who has been in the county jail since Feb. 23, was served a warrant Friday for an incident that happened Jan. 26. Officers responded that day to Massage World, at 2460 W. Main St., St. Charles, for a report of a damaged front window, police reported.

According to the report, witnesses saw a black sedan with a “very poor black paint job” pull in front of the business. A man who exited the vehicle reportedly threw a large rock at the front window.

The man returned to the vehicle and exited the parking lot on eastbound West Main Street, police reported. The report indicated a witness tried to run after the car to get its license plate number, but it moved too fast.

Massage World had installed surveillance cameras since sustaining similar dam-

age about two weeks earlier, police reported, and a camera captured the Jan. 26 incident.

The cost to replace the window was reportedly estimated at $4,000.

Judge Susan Clancy Boles approved one count of criminal damage to property between $300 and $10,000 against Patzer, the report states, notJustin Bruce ing the charge Patzer is a Class 4 felony. His bond was set at $10,000 with 10 percent to apply.

Patzer also faces multiple charges in connection to the Jan. 27 incident at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Police have said he assaulted his brotherin-law and was armed with a knife in the area of the intensive care unit.

Patzer was taken into police custody in Indiana that night, but he wasn’t extradited to Kane County until Feb. 23. There, he was served an arrest warrant in connection with an incident at XSport in St. Charles, which reportedly happened hours before the situation unfolded in Geneva. He is expected in court April 22.

GENEVA – A snowstorm Monday dumped several inches of snow on the Tri-Cities area, making roads slick and causing some crashes.

St. Charles received six inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Geneva had six crashes, starting Sunday night and stretching into Monday morning, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote in an email.

Two of the crashes were on private property, she said.

One was a rollover crash that occurred at Fabyan Parkway and Kirk Road.

The crash did not involve any life-threatening injuries, Nash wrote.

Fata was one of more than 200 people who participated in the inaugural St. Charles East HOPE Hustle on Saturday at the St. Charles East High School campus. The event was hosted by the St. Charles East student club HOPE, which focuses on student well-being.

The acronym stands for Helping Others Protect Each other.

“By coming together and being here, we are kind of saying, ‘There’s a place for everybody. We’re all here to support each other.’ And this is a way to kind of get active,” she said.

“This is exercise. It’s good for you. It makes you feel better.”

Sharbaugh said she would like the HOPE Hustle to become an annual event.

“I think that’s the goal,” she said. “We’re already taking notes on what we can do better for next year. We want to make it better and better every year.”

Presidential debates should include 3rd-party candidates BLOOMBERG NEWS Most Americans want a third party, which probably explains why leaders of the Democratic and Republican parties have conspired for the past three decades to exclude third-party candidates from the presidential debates.

Never mind how unlikely a third-party victory may be, they say. Keep those interlopers away from the cameras!

Now some eminences grises are fighting back, and for good reason. In a media-saturated political market, presidential debates may be less important to voter education than they once were. But they are virtually

the only opportunity in the general election campaign that voters have to see the candidates side by side – and they are a crucial way for independent candidates to present themselves as viable contenders.

The two major parties have effectively run the debates since 1987, when they joined forces to form the Commission on Presidential Debates. (In doing so, they pushed aside the group that had been doing an admirable job: the League of Women Voters.) From the beginning, the commission made no secret of its hostility toward third-party candidates. In 1992, the commission included Ross Perot mostly because

neither George H.W. Bush nor Bill Clinton objected.

Four years later, when both party candidates agreed to keep Perot out of the debates, the commission adopted a tortured rationale for excluding him.

For the 2000 election, the commission adopted a rule that excluded Green Party candidate Ralph Nader and Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan, as well as every third-party candidate since: Only those who garner at least 15 percent support in five public opinion polls taken two months before the election are eligible to participate.

This debate duopoly should be broken up. The

group now pushing for a more inclusive eligibility standard, however, has suggested a flawed alternative.

Under its proposal, a nonmajor-party candidate who qualifies for the ballot in enough states to reach 270 electoral votes would become eligible to join the debates. If two or more candidates reach that threshold, only the one who collects the most signatures would be eligible.

There is no perfect eligibility threshold. There is, however, a general principle that would serve the public well: All candidates should be treated equally, but not each debate should be. The first debate might include all candidates who have

qualified for the ballot in a majority of states, with the potential to win 270 electoral votes. The second debate could include only those candidates who receive at least 5 percent or 7 percent in polls.

In the third debate, the polling threshold could be raised to 10 percent or 12 percent.

Two months before the 1998 gubernatorial election in Minnesota, polls showed Jesse Ventura receiving only 10 percent of the vote. Yet he was allowed to take part in the debates, and he went on to win. That’s the nightmare scenario for the major parties – but it clearly benefited voters.

Aren’t they the ones whom the debates are for?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR SUPPORTING OUTSTANDING PEOPLE To the Editor: Granted, we live in St. Charles and cannot vote in Geneva’s upcoming school board election. However, it has long been our custom to support outstanding, “can do” people for positions in our neighboring communities, no matter what the venue.

Such is the case with Kelly Nowak, who is seeking another term on the school board. Having worked with Kelly on many community projects, we have seen firsthand what she can accomplish. One example would be her role in helping get the new $3 million Tri-City Salvation Army building and its programs up and running. Today, the building is bursting at the seams with activities for all Tri-City residents. It is but one example of her way of doing things. She always takes the long view, objectively ascertaining the best course of action, then working to accomplish it.

We have often discussed the dangers in focusing only on a single issue. That focus tends to blind one to the multitude of choices facing any board and the necessity to deal with them fairly and expeditiously.

Her mantra has always been – what is the best for the organization and its long-term future?

Please vote for Kelly. You’ll be glad you did.

Geneva fades in second half

Saturday’s 63-42 loss to Bolingbrook in the IHSA Class 4A third-place game devolved for Geneva on multiple levels, but the Vikings secured their place in program history long before being saluted by their fans in the waning moments and during their medal presentation.

Geneva (30-5) finished tied for most single-season wins in program history with the 1962-63 team, the last Vikings squad to advance downstate.

“I think many people didn’t have us getting out of our own regional,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “So for us to have gotten as far as we have, I couldn’t be more proud.”

Geneva led, 19-15, at halftime, but floundered in the second half, with Ralston and players agreeing fatigue – perhaps mental as well as physical – played a part.

“The numbers say so,” Geneva senior guard Daniel Santacaterina said. “I think we just lost ourselves a little bit. I don’t think it was anything they did. … We beat ourselves a little bit. We just needed to take a deep breath and play like we usually do, but it didn’t happen.”

Bolingbrook assumed control in the third quarter as the Raiders’ press regularly disturbed the Vikings. The Raiders outscored the Vikings in the quarter, 20-9, to take a 35-28 lead heading into the fourth.

Matters only worsened from there for Geneva. The Raiders went to the freethrow line an astounding 33

times in the second half after failing to attempt a single free throw in the opening half.

“It’s not that they quit or gave up. They threw everything they had into it to the end,” Ralston said of his players. “Credit Bolingbrook for adding that level of pressure to us, changing up the game, and we just couldn’t respond.

It’s a shame that we couldn’t get it done, but it just happened that way.”

The night took an ugly turn in the fourth quarter when junior center Loudon Vollbrecht, after missing a free throw, put his football background on display in a scrum for the offense rebound that turned nasty. He had to be restrained by teammates after being separated from the pile, and once referees sorted out the aftermath, Vollbrecht was ejected.

free throws put the Raiders ahead, 45-31, with 4:38 to play in the game.

Geneva uncharacteristically went 7 for 18 from the free-throw line in the game, with Vollbrecht’s 0 for 5 showing at the line – and a rough second half in Friday’s two-point, semifinal loss to Normal – surely contributing to the junior’s surly spirits.

“Obviously I think part of it was some frustration,” Ralston said. “It is what it is.

We’ll have to deal with that. I don’t necessarily agree with the [ejection] but that’s not for me to decide.”

Bolingbrook (25-7) featured balanced scoring, led by Colorado State recruit Prentiss Nixon (15 points), and the Raiders outrebounded Geneva, 29-23 – a category the Vikings usually dominate.

Die-hards in Geneva ‘Blue Crue’ back for more GHS salutes Vikings

Geneva held a morning recognition program for the school’s basketball team Monday, highlighting the Vikings’ fourth-place finish in Class 4A over the weekend.

At 30-5, Geneva tied the single-season school record for victories while reaching the program’s first state tournament in 52 years.

Although several students elected not to reprise their rowdiness after Friday’s 3836 semifinal loss to Normal, the Vikings saluted backers young and old for remaining at full throat for three-plus months.

Saturday’s assignment was admittedly tougher than most.

For those fans who didn’t stay in Peoria overnight Friday – and there were dozens, with Geneva parent Shawn Geary calling a nearby Travelodge “loaded” with Vikings supporters – a round-trip commute approaching six hours for a consolation game challenged motivation.

A meeker-than-usual atmosphere often is the norm for third-place games. After four busloads of students and chaperones traveled to Peoria for Friday’s semifinal, Grimston said eight to 10 passengers made the trek Saturday.

“It was hard to get here.

It’s three hours away, but it’s definitely worth it to see our boys fight for what they really wanted,” she said.

“I challenged our guys at the beginning of the game that the easy thing to do would be just to coast through and take the first trophy for boys basketball in the history of the school,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “That would be the easy thing to do, but the right thing to do is to play right and win and get third place, and get out of here with the third place trophy. At halftime, I re-challenged them with the same thing, and to their credit, they responded like they’ve done all season.”

For the second straight night, Navigato (15 points) was the lone Viking to score in double figures, but the Raiders defended Geneva’s all-time scoring leader well

after his sizzling start. He was among a batch of regulars subbed out in the late stages, and watched the final moments with a towel draped over his head.

Vollbrecht scored eight points to go with seven rebounds and senior guard Pace Temple added six points for a Geneva squad that eliminated five opponents with more than 20 wins on its path to Peoria.

PEORIA – Geneva junior Jamie Grimston and the school’s Blue Crue student section erupted in several chants during this weekend’s Class 4A boys basketball final four.

“WARM UP THE BUS!”, a time-honored roar that orders an opponent to brace for impending defeat, wasn’t one of them.

If Geneva students couldn’t savor a Vikings victory, a handful at least warmed to the bus. Grimston was among those who commuted from Geneva High School to the Peoria Civic Center via student shuttle for both Friday’s semifinal against Normal and Saturday’s third-place game against Bolingbrook.

“Third place, fourth place, first place, second place, we all root for them. We’re there to support them. All of us are.

We’re here,” Grimston said.

“Obviously, there would be a much larger turnout if they were in the state championship, but they deserve to be here. They’re a great team.”

koski drove with friends to the game, leaving by car Saturday afternoon after her Geneva badminton competition.

Teammate and friend Sarah Aguilar was among those traveling with Sronkoski, too. “(Friday) was a close game, and we would have loved to have been in the championship, but I mean, this is going to be our last high school basketball game,” Sronkoski said.

“We all wanted to come and support.”

For some Blue Crue members, the cheering and shouting proved reciprocal.

Senior Janie McCloughan, one of the Vikings’ top girls basketball players, still beams about the sizzling atmosphere during her own team’s run to the 4A state tournament in 2014.

“There was total support from the boys team for us, so I think a lot of the girls have come together and really tried to be there in this run for them,” McCloughan said.

The Vikings earned one last ovation when they received their fourth-place medals during halftime of the championship game.

t. Charles resident Ryan Flanagan recites the date of his stroke without hesitation.

He’s equally up front about how he once regarded the illness, as well.

“I didn’t know what a stroke was except for it’s something that older people get or have,” Flanagan said.

“There’s so many people that have strokes now who are younger.”

Flanagan was 36 when he suffered a stroke Nov. 10, 2010. Now 41, he’s training for his first Ironman Triathlon while actively raising funds for the National Stroke Association.

“It became very clear to me right away that he’s on a mission,” said Flanagan’s coach, Joe LoPresto. “I could see it in his eyes and in his personality. Very full of life, very focused. Very, ‘I’m getting this done, I’m climbing a mountain,’ kind of mindset.”

Years ago, Flanagan jokes, merely thinking about completing a 2.4-mile swim, 112mile bike and 26.2-mile run in succession would have made him dizzy. Admittedly sedentary well into his 30s, Flanagan hardly exercised or watched what he ate.

That lifestyle coupled with a series of stressful occurrences – Flanagan and his wife, Krista, were raising a young son and daughter when they learned Krista would be losing her job that winter – helped pave the way to the stroke.

A malformation in Flanagan’s brain blood vessels, a condition he has lived with since birth, also played an integral role.

For the next two years after the stroke, Flanagan worked to change his habits and diet while regularly battling mental and physical challenges.

in my head,” he said. “So the last thing that I wanted to do was work out or exercise or anything like that.”

That changed when a friend, after persistent trying, at last coaxed Flanagan into taking a bike ride. Bike rides begat walking, which eventually begat running, as Flanagan felt an increasing itch for activity.

Once, after walking his daughter, Caitlin, now 6, to school, Flanagan figured he’d pick up the pace a bit.

Imagine a man gearing up for September’s Ironman

Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, getting winded after running a half-mile.

“I never thought I would see the light of day again,” Flanagan said. “I was so beat and exhausted.”

Flanagan credits a rigorous training regimen for his budding stamina and his family for his strength.

He still hangs in his garage the “Go Daddy Go” sign his family toted to his first road race in December 2012.

A stay-at-home dad for his children – who also include son Nolan, 4 – Flanagan

balances school pick-up duty with training during the week. He’s set to compete in a half-Ironman in the summer as his progression through the discipline continues.

Flanagan developed epilepsy from the stroke and says he can have a seizure at any moment, a notable concern especially when he’s swimming in open water.

Like other obstacles over the past few years, he sought to clear that one, too.

“I’ve decided that I’ve been through so much already that it was time to not be afraid anymore,” Flanagan said. “From the time I finished that very first triathlon, I was hooked.”

at Lisle-based Experience Triathlon, believes in mixing the scope and location of Flanagan’s workouts.

As weather permits, Flanagan often bikes in rural Kane County and swims at Naperville’s Centennial Beach. During the fall and winter, he was a mainstay at The Norris Center in St. Charles.

Monitoring Flanagan prompts LoPresto to recall fellow Experience athlete Mike Babicz, a Maywood police officer who raised $10,000 for the families of fallen police officers last year after a counterpart in his department died in the line of duty.

Babicz also competed in Ironman Wisconsin.

“He was unstoppable, and that’s really where Ryan is right now,” LoPresto said.

“I know he’ll have no issue with getting this done, because nothing will stand in his way.”

Again displaying his fleet decision-making, Flanagan is quick to note he now considers the stroke a blessing.

“I’ve been chasing the runner’s high from the first time I’ve had it, which was about two years ago,” he said. “From the time I finished that very first triathlon, I was hooked.”

As a triathlete, Flangan also pursues the biker’s and swimmer’s highs. Although not as celebrated, he couldn’t be happier to know of their existence.

ST. CHARLES – With only two seniors on the entire roster, St. Charles North badminton coach Michael Smith knew coming into the 2015 season it would be a challenge to get up to speed against more experienced teams in the area.

With Wheaton North visiting the North Stars on Monday, it was clear the North Stars would be tested by the experience of the Falcons’ eight seniors from the get-go.

Inevitably, Wheaton North used that experience to their advantage en route to a comfortable 14-1 win.

“We are really just trying to start with the basics,” Smith said. “We’ve really been working with the lower levels on footwork and basic strokes.

“You’ve got to put your

comfortable because we don’t want them to think it’s okay to be in that position to begin with,” Smith said.

North faced a 5-0 deficit by the time singles started, and Wheaton North continued to pile it on.

The Falcons took the first two singles matchups to stretch their lead to 7-0 before junior Jessica Miller finally put North on the board.

North’s No. 8 singles player earned the North Stars’ lone victory, winning, 21-19, 17-21, 21-19.

“The win definitely made me feel really good. I had to work really hard for it,” Miller said. “Next year, we won’t have those two seniors (Emily Bell and Brittany Passini), and they’re the best on the team, so we have to step up and try our best to compete like them.”

Dear Abby: My wife has stage 4 breast cancer. She is only 51, and our most optimistic prognosis is three to four more years. Our children, 15 and 16, understand her disease, but don’t really have a sense of how much longer we all have together.

Recently we went out to dinner, and the kids started talking about my retirement plans and their college plans. Later that night, my wife told me how sad it was hearing the kids talk about things she knows she will never see.

I have been debating whether I should have a talk with the kids and perhaps suggest they avoid subjects that make their mother sad. Dear Abby: As a gift, my boyfriend, “Seth,” gave me a Chihuahua puppy. I like dogs, but have never expressed a desire to have one. In fact, I have repeatedly mentioned my dislike for small dogs and that I wouldn’t have a dog due to my travel schedule for work. I’d have to pay for food,

veterinary care, toys, boarding, etc., and the dog would be alone in my apartment all day while I’m at the office.

Yogurt is good for you – but make sure it’s the right kind Dear Doctor K: Is yogurt a healthy choice for breakfast or as a snack?

Dear Reader: You’ve heard me talk frequently about “good” and “bad” fats, and “good” and “bad” carbs. So it won’t be surprising when I say there are “good” yogurts and “bad” yogurts.

Here’s what I mean. Yogurt – plain, low-fat yogurt – is a healthy food. But many yogurt products contain ingredients you could do without, like added sweeteners. So let’s talk about what to look for in a healthy yogurt.

First, fat. Yogurt has the same percentage of fat as the milk (or soy) used to make it: 3.25 percent (whole milk), 0.5 percent to 2 percent (low-fat), and less than 0.5 percent (nonfat). I prefer low-fat yogurt, which strikes a good balance between saturated fat and taste. I have it at least three to four times per week.

Next up, protein. Yogurt is a good source of lean protein. But the amount of protein per serving in yogurt products varies quite a bit. Plain Greek-style yogurt is relatively high in protein because much of its excess water has been removed, thus concentrating the yogurt. At the other extreme, non-

Try to avoid sweetened yogurts, which can contain three or more teaspoons of added sugar.

Instead, start “clean” with plain, low-fat yogurt. Then add a bit of honey, maple syrup or sugar to taste.

Next, a surprise: I would also stay away from light or “lite” yogurts. To compensate for the fat removed from these yogurts, manufacturers add thickeners such as gelatin, gum or starch. Sweeteners and flavoring agents are also added. The result is a highly processed food that loses many of yogurt’s healthy attributes.

A base of plain, low-fat yogurt enhanced with your own healthy toppings makes for a good breakfast or snack. With the right additions, yogurt can supply a mix of fat, protein and fiber that is both filling and nutritious.

Here is a basic combination you can customize to your taste:

Fruit and yogurt: A cup of plain, low-fat yogurt, a medium handful of fresh fruit, and a sprinkling of nuts, granola, bran or oatmeal is all you need. Sweeten to taste with honey, maple syrup or regular sugar. Most likely, by adding just enough sweet stuff to make it taste good, you’ll have less sugar in your yogurt than if you start with a pre-sweetened yogurt.

You can also incorporate yogurt into other meals and snacks throughout the day. For example: • Dilute sour cream or mayonnaise with yogurt to cut back on fat calories without losing the flavor. (This is the advice our nutritionists give me. To be honest, I haven’t tried it yet.)

• Make packaged dips with yogurt instead of sour cream.

• Mix yogurt with lemon and honey to make a sweet sauce to put on fruit.

As always, check the Nutrition Facts label on the yogurt container. It will help you spot how much fat and sugar it contains.

Woman’s fiance is a habitual liar Dr. Wallace: I’m 20 and engaged to a guy three years older. We had planned to get married this summer. I love this guy, I think, but lately I’ve discovered that he’s a habitual liar. About a month ago, Ken told his aunt my father was a surgeon. In fact, he’s a mail carrier who loves his job. Ken also told me that he has $10,000 in his bank account, but when I want to see the bankbook, he refuses.

Last night he told me he put $10,000 down on a new house for us to live in after we’re married because houses in Phoenix are very cheap now. The problem is that I can’t confirm it because he refuses to tell me where the house is located. When I asked him where he got the money, he said it was an early wedding gift from his grandparents. I asked why he just didn’t use his $10,000 he had in the bank, and he said he had loaned it to a friend.

I called his grandmother and inquired about the “gift,” and she said she didn’t give him any money. She added that Ken was a good boy, but has always had a vivid imagination.

While I love him, I’m terribly bothered by his lies. Should I suggest that he fix his problem before we tie the knot?

Wouldn’t it be great if everyone had a sweet tooth for reading? Today, though, Olivieri’s key word is “migrate.” This deal is the same as yesterday’s except that the spade ace has migrated into the dummy.

How does that affect South’s line of play in three no-trump after West leads the heart queen?

South should rebid one spade, despite the weakness of the suit.

North’s three-diamond rebid is game-invitational, guaranteeing at least a six-card suit. South, with two heart stoppers and some diamond fit, takes a shot at three no-trump.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. He can get two extra winners from either minor. Maybe diamonds will divide 3-2 or clubs will split 3-3. Yesterday, declarer had to choose immediately, so went with diamonds because a 3-2 break is much more likely than 3-3 (67.8 percent versus 35.53 percent). Now, though, South can try both suits.

After winning the first trick, declarer should cash dummy’s two top diamonds.

If the suit is splitting 3-2, South concedes a diamond trick. With the spade ace in the dummy, declarer can reach those three established winners and bring home an overtrick.

Here, though, when diamonds divide 4-1, South must hope for 3-3 clubs.

This line produces a 79.2 percent probability of success.
