Shaw Media to acquire Elburn, Sugar Grove weekly newspapers SHAW MEDIA Shaw Media, owner of Kane County Chronicle, is acquiring Kaneland Publications Inc., the publisher of the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald.

The deal is expected to close the first week of April, the two companies announced today.

According to Shaw Media Vice President J. Tom Shaw, the acquisition is part of Shaw Media’s strategy to expand its weekly newspaper network in suburban Chicago.

“We are excited to welcome the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald into our growing network of local weekly newspapers,” Shaw said. “Last summer, we added the Kendall County Record, Oswego Ledger, Plano Record, and Sandwich Record. The response from the communities we serve has been tremendous.”

Mom, daughter opening bakery in downtown SC

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A mother-daughter duo whose baked goods brought them success in Geneva are preparing to open their own bakery in downtown St. Charles.

Susan and Katie Kritzberg said they hope to open Two Wild Seeds Baking Company this spring in the space most recently occupied by The Bend General Store, 320 W. Main St. They had wanted to open earlier this year, but still are working to ready the space, they said.

“Our customers are waiting for us,” Katie Kritzberg said.

She and her mother aim to create delicious, flavorful artisan desserts and cakes that also happen to be gluten-free. Their menu includes an oat and honey cream pie, salted caramel shortbread bars, chocolate chip coconut macaroons and iced molasses cookies.

“Our products are good enough for anyone to enjoy, whether they have sensitivity to gluten or not – but then they’re also safe for those who need to

The Kritzbergs previously sold their treats under a different name – Blackberry Baking Company – at Sweet Natalie’s in downtown Geneva.

They began looking for their own space last summer, they said, noting they considered places in Geneva and

St. Charles.

The former Bend location came to them by surprise, Susan Kritzberg said, explaining that a real estate agent suggested the spot. She said they liked that it was accessible, that it was in an attractive downtown and that it came with some equipment, including a grease trap – an often-expen-

sive item.

Susan Kritzberg said they immediately got support from the city, the Downtown St. Charles Partnership and the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce.

“They’ve been super, super supportive the whole way,” she said.

St. Charles has also committed money to the bakery’s renovations through the Downtown Business Economic Incentive Program. Created in 2015, the program provides build-out assistance for new or existing business that are renovating the interiors of retail spaces on the first floor of downtown properties.

The City Council on Monday approved an award for Two Wild Seeds Baking Company in the amount of $14,223 – half of the Kritzbergs’ anticipated costs.

Susan Kritzberg said they are “extremely grateful” they were told about the program, because the grant is a “huge asset.”

Her daughter said they hope to create “a little escape” where people can feel inspired.

ST. CHARLES – The Manski Family Foundation is looking to give $500 to four graduating seniors from St. Charles North High School, according to a news release.

Scholarship applications are due at 6 p.m. April 17. The winners will be announced at the St. Charles North Senior Honors Night on May 5, the release states.

Applicants must have participated in a high school sports team or teams, according to the release. Each scholarship has a difference focus. The scholarships are described in the release as follows: • The academic excellence scholarship is for students who recognize the value and fulfillment of an education. These students not only excel in athletics, but also accomplish achievements in a challenging curriculum.

• The athletic leadership scholarship is for students who have the ability to lead and positively affect their

teammates.

• The spirit scholarship is for students who portray enthusiasm and character in a way that motivates others.

• The service scholarship is for students with a passion for serving the community and volunteering to help those in need.

‘SHE DOESN’T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER’

Teen keeps busy, sets her sights on being U.S. Air Force engineer

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Jessica Melone, a junior honor roll student at St. Charles North High School, stands out as one of a few girls in engineering classes.

The 16-year-old also is one of only two girls out of 70 cadets in the Fox Valley Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol at DuPage Airport.

Her achievements don’t stop there.

She is on the girls golf and track teams and is a second-degree black belt in taekwondo at LaFox Martial Arts in Campton Hills. She takes classes and is a student teacher.

“She is very goal-oriented, and she is a very responsible learner,” said Ronald Brown, her engineering teacher. “We have a lot of great students here, and she kind of fits in that mold.

She doesn’t take no for an answer.”

Jessica Melone said she sets high goals for herself because she wants to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy and go into the Air Force as an officer.

“I really want to build myself up for success,” she said. “I want to be an engineer for the Air Force.”

Her parents, Maria and Robert Melone, said they are proud of her.

“I am confident that she will make a great leader wherever she goes,” Robert Melone said.

“She amazes me,” Maria Melone said. “At 16, I did not have that mindset at her age. I just find her amazing, I really do. She’s just very motivated, and I’m just very proud of her.”

And to think she almost did not start taking engineering classes.

“At freshman orientation, my mom said this would be a good class,” Jessica Melone said. “And I didn’t know what it was really about. I saw people drawing stuff on the computer and thought, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’ After the first week, I was doing actual stuff.

And I’ve been taking classes ever since my freshman year. It’s not at all easy, but it’s fun to have a challenge.”

She acknowledged being outnumbered by boys in the class.

“I don’t think a lot of girls know how much fun it is,” Jessica Melone said. “It’s fun to make mechanical

She has been in the Civil Air Patrol for two years and is a cadet/master sergeant.

The Civil Air Patrol is a federally supported nonprofit corporation that is the official civilian auxiliary for the Air Force. It has three congressionally assigned missions – emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs for youths age 12 through 21, according to its website www.gocivilairpatrol.com.

Sugar Grove library sets various activities for spring break

BATAVIA – A Batavia gasoline station will get its Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru lane after approval Monday by city aldermen.

The Batavia City Council voted, 12-0, in favor of the project for the Shell of Batavia, 108 N. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

Aldermen approved zoning variances and a conditional-use permit for the drive-thru lane, which is being marketed at morning commuters in search of coffee and doughnuts.

Owner Harry Mehta will lease a portion of his building to Dunkin’ Donuts, which will operate the drive-thru lane and a walk-up counter. The station is at the northeast corner of Route 31 and Houston Street.

In other business, the council:

• Approved several appointments

Clark said she was “absolutely overwhelmed” by the gesture and noted that support from Swing Set has been phenomenal. It’s been a rough six months,

she said, adding she has had to take time off work.

“We love her,” she said.

She described Clark as gentle and loving but not a doormat.

“She’s like a mom,” Hoepfner said.

“She’s been so tough, too [during her illness].”

After the initial surprise wore off, Mains guided Clark to the fire engine so she could add her signature among the others covering the vehicle. Clark said she chose a spot near a handle as a nod to her inability to sit up and get off the couch on her own after receiving treatment.

“You get a whole new appreciation for life when you beat something like this,” she said.

ST. CHARLES – The Downtown St. Charles Partnership is seeking participants for its Chair-ity event, which is in its second year, according to a news release.

The program invites community members to decorate Adirondack chairs, which will be placed throughout downtown St. Charles, the release states.

Any individual, group or business can participate, the release states, noting that participants have the option of donating the chair for auction at the end of the event. Proceeds will benefit downtown beautification efforts, the release states.

“Interested participants are encouraged to create imaginative and unique works of art appropriate for public display,” the release states.

ELBURN – A fire Monday night caused $35,000 in damage to a house in Elburn, but there were no injuries, said Craig Hanson, the assistant chief of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

The fire was reported about 8:30 p.m. at 300 W. Nebraska St. Hanson said a passerby reported the fire, and a police officer arrived at the scene. The officer was able to help the two occupants safely exit the home, Hanson said.

“They were unaware of the fire,” Hanson said, adding that the fire was in an attic space and presented itself out of the west side of the home.

Hanson said the fire was brought under control within an hour, and the firefighters were at the scene until about midnight. He said that three residents were being assisted by the Red Cross. He said the fire is not considered to be suspicious.

Other fire departments assisted at the scene, including those from Sugar Grove, Kaneville, Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles and Maple Park.

Police: SC man is accused of injuring his girlfriend’s dog

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man who claimed that his girlfriend’s dog suffered injuries in a fall now faces a criminal charge in connection with the injured animal, police said.

Jace A. Pflee- Jace A. ger, 24, of the Pfleeger 400 block of South Third Street, has been charged with animal cruelty, a misdemeanor, in the Dec. 18 incident.

St. Charles Deputy Police Chief Dave Kintz said Pfleeger told his girlfriend that her dog, a Shiba Inu, fell down the

stairs while he was watching it.

She took the pet to the St. Charles Veterinary Clinic, where a veterinarian determined the dog’s injuries were not consistent with falling down stairs, Kintz said, noting that is when police were called.

The dog suffered from two broken bones in the right leg – the radius and the ulna – as well as injuries to its head, eye and mouth, Kintz said. He said teeth were also knocked loose, and there was fresh swelling and bruising to the injured area.

An investigation revealed that Pfleeger was the only person with the dog, Kintz said.

Pfleeger is next expected in court May 26.

Woman charged with felony obstruction

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Winfield Township woman was charged with felony obstruction of justice because police said she tried to prevent officers from arresting someone on a warrant.

Tara L. McGregor, 22, of the 29W000 block of Calumet Avenue, Winfield Tara L. Township, was McGregor charged March 1 after Geneva police recognized the vehicle she was driving. It was speeding in the 700 block of McKinley Avenue, according to police reports.

McGregor gave false information to police regarding a person who was wanted on a warrant, according to police reports. McGregor also was charged with driving while her license was suspended.

McGregor was being held on $30,000 bond in the Kane

County jail as of Tuesday afternoon. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, according to court records.

The felony charge has a penalty of two to five years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000 if convicted.

McGregor also had a bench warrant issued for her from DuPage County for failure to appear in court on charges stemming from a Dec. 2, 2015, arrest by Warrenville police.

DuPage County court records show McGregor was charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

Despite McGregor’s alleged obstruction, police apprehended the person wanted on the warrant, Geneva Police Cmdr.

Longmeadow foes say Kane election results give them the momentum

cswieca@shawmedia.com ALGONQUIN – Opponents of the long-planned Longmeadow Parkway project say some of Kane County’s election results have given momentum to their cause, but one Algonquin official said the opposition is based in misinformation.

In a Dundee Township referendum on the March 15 ballot, 8,657 voters accounting for 68.5 percent of respondents said they wanted municipal officials to oppose the project. The referendum’s wording mentioned “air, noise and water pollution, and negative impacts to property values.”

Kane County Board District 24 incumbent Joseph Haimann was defeated in the Democratic primary by Jarett Sanchez, who made opposing Longmeadow Parkway a large part of his platform. He will face Republican Roben Hall in November.

Some Algonquin residents said they have concerns about the proximity of the road to their homes.

Susan Bockman and Lindsay Williams, who live on Broadsmore Drive just south of Longmeadow Parkway, said they are concerned about traffic cutting through their neighborhood

and their kids having to cross the road to get to school “So many houses are going up for sale around us, and I’m concerned about foreclosures, about the short sales, about my property value going down,” Williams said.

Schmitt said village police have stopped cut-through traffic in other areas and would be willing to do so for neighborhoods near Longmeadow. He also said he would be willing to have a sit-down meeting at Village Hall with concerned residents who oppose the project, something he said opponents have “not [been] willing” to do.

Opponents are urging residents to go to municipal government meetings and reiterate their message.

“We know that the odds are pretty great against us, but we’ve already accomplished quite a bit,” Sanchez said. “It’s always been talked about as a done deal, and it’s not necessarily.”

Risks of a Trump presidency THE WASHINGTON POST As Donald Trump observed during a visit to The Washington Post on Monday, we have been critical of his candidacy, so give him credit for agreeing to sit down with us and answer questions for more than an hour. Unfortunately, the visit provided no reassurance regarding Trump’s fitness for the presidency. “I’m not a radical person,” he told us as he was leaving. But his answers left little doubt how radical a risk the nation would be taking in entrusting the White House to him.

There was, first, a breezy willingness to ignore facts and evidence. Are there racial disparities in law enforcement?

“I’ve read where there are and I’ve read where there aren’t,” Trump said. “I mean, I’ve read both. And, you know, I have no opinion on that.” Global warming? “I am not a great believer in man-made climate change,” he said.

In that, Trump is not different from many Republican politicians these days. But no one can match the chasm between his expansive goals and the absence of proposals to achieve them. He would remake the nation’s libel laws, but how, given Supreme Court jurisprudence on the First Amendment? “I’d have to get my lawyers in to tell you,” he said. How could he implement a ban on noncitizen Muslims entering the country?

“Well look, there’s many exceptions,” he said. “There’s many – everything, you’re going to go through a process.”

His answer to racial disparity and urban poverty is to create jobs. But how? “Economic zones,” “incentives” and improving the “spirit” of inner-city residents. “You have to start by giving them hope and giving them spirit, and that has not taken place,” Trump said. How would he push back against Chinese expansionism in the South China Sea? “We have to be unpredictable,” Trump said. “We’re totally predictable. And predictable is bad.”

An empty policy basket makes almost impossible the kind of substantive debate on which democracies depend. And while it is true that ambiguity sometimes can be useful in diplomacy, a lack of clarity also can be dangerous, enticing rivals to be aggressive and allies to seek new friends.

The latter risk does not seem to worry Trump: He describes the fundamental U.S. alliances that have helped keep the peace for the past half-century as essentially obsolete. “NATO is costing us a fortune,” he said. “I think NATO as a concept is good, but it is not as good as it was when it first evolved.” He asked why Japan and South Korea, which already pay a substantial share of the costs of U.S. bases, don’t pay 100 percent. We asked: Does the United States gain nothing by a forward presence to help maintain the peace? “Personally, I don’t think so,” Trump said. It might have made sense when we were “a very powerful, very wealthy country,” but “we’re a poor country now.”

Given Trump’s belief that we don’t treat him fairly, we invite readers to read the full transcript or listen to the audio recording of our conversation, both of which we’ve posted online. He answered questions about violence at his rallies, voting rights for the District of Columbia (he would favor a voting representative in the House but not statehood), promoting democracy overseas and the seemliness of trading insults and threatening critics. His defense of the latter was telling: “I mean, actually I think it is presidential because it is winning.”

Which suggests one more difference between us: our definition of what is presidential.

To the Editor: My friends and I, all of whom are avid readers of the Kane County Chronicle, are distressed by a trend that has developed in the Chronicle over the past few months. We object to the practice of printing letters from politicians, boards and commissions at the expense of private citizens. The aforementioned politicians, boards and commissions have

many other venues to express their concerns and opinions, while private citizens must rely only upon letters to the editors in newspapers like the Chronicle.

It could perhaps be argued that there are not enough letters from private citizens to fill the space each and every day. Then, by all means, resort to printing something else.

But, if a letter from a private citizen is in hand, print it.

We also understand that

politicians like Randy Hultgren (see the Chronicle from Feb. 24, 2016) have an absolute right to free speech. However, in a paper that sometimes could be hard pressed for meaningful news stories, may we also suggest that these articles be carried in the main body of the paper and not in the letters to the editor section.

Coffey blends humility, intensity to lead Batavia

It didn’t necessarily have to be sports, but most of the time it was.

The youngest of four boys, Coffey rarely found himself on the winning end of those battles and all that did was motivate him.

After a successful football season, Coffey took his winning ways to the basketball court, leading Batavia to its first-ever Upstate Eight Conference River Division title and first 20-win season since 2007-08 en route to becom-

“I never won,” Coffey said of those brotherly battles. “It sparked this competitive nature inside me. Our whole family is super competitive and we like to win. But whether you win or lose, you have to stay humble about it. You can’t let any results change the way you react. I’ve always had that desire to win no matter what, and I can defi-

nitely look back and say those battles with my brothers transferred over to my high school sports career.”

In order to develop that success on the basketball court, Coffey had to put in his time to make himself a more complete player.

As a sophomore on the varsity team, he was primarily an outside shooter.

But during the two offseasons before his senior year – a season that saw him score 15.8 points a game, knock down 88 3-pointers and eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career – he worked on every aspect of his game.

The offensive skills often are first to be noticed, but both Coffey and coach

Jim Nazos think Coffey’s greatest strides since his first days on varsity may have come on the opposite side of the ball.

“A lot of people don’t realize that he’s our best defender,” Nazos said.

“He prides himself on that very much, and I think it often gets overlooked. He just always wanted the matchup and always wanted to guard the opposing team’s best player.”

Those matchups saw the 6-foot-3 Coffey guard the gamut of 6-foot-6 Larkin forward and UEC River Player of the Year Christian Negron to quicker and more athletic guards.

Woods’ focus on future pans out for Saints

ccasey@shawmedia.com The St. Charles East seniors had their final high school boys basketball season go a little differently than planned.

After an injury to sophomore forward Justin Hardy during the Saints’ Thanksgiving tournament, East saw its starting point guard, James McQuillan, go Pat Woods down with a broken bone in his foot, followed by junior Zach Mitchell breaking his arm.

A team that many expected to compete for an Upstate Eight Conference River Division title seemed to be seeing its chances slip away. While the Saints finished third overall in the River, coach Pat Woods ultimately had an end goal in mind.

“He could kind of see that we were

letting the injuries and struggles get to us,” senior forward Zach Hondlik said.

“But he always motivated us to stick together through it all. He always said that if we kept battling that we’d get healthy in time for the playoffs and have a good run.”

The Saints did exactly that, as Woods, the Kane County Chronicle Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, led East to the IHSA Class 4A Rock Valley College Sectional championship game, just two wins away from a trip to the state tournament.

“I didn’t think it would be easy for them,” Woods said during the playoff run. “I knew that it was hard for them not to succeed each time out there, but we always stressed playing our best basketball at the end of the season and I think the guys all bought into that.”

One senior, Evan DiLeonardi, managed to stay on the court, although he battled flu-like symptoms for a few days during the stretch where it

seemed like the Saints (18-13) could not catch a break and missed one game.

No matter the scenario, DiLeonardi said Woods’ motivation kept morale thriving.

“I think that was his greatest strength as a coach,” DiLeonardi said.

“He just always knew what to say to keep us going. It could have been very easy to give up, and maybe with a different coach, we might have. But he cares. He cares about us being successful on and off the court, and that showed this entire season.”

Both Hondlik and DiLeonardi have extremely fond memories of their coach on the court. One such recollection was seeing Woods climb a ladder to cut the final pieces of the net down after the Saints won a regional title in their home gym.

But the two seniors also recalled times off the court that they will remember, as well.

DiLeonardi came on offensively late in the season to help the Saints to a 18-13 record and a trip to the Class 4A Rock Valley College Sectional final.

Canaan Coffey Batavia, sr., G The KCC Player of the Year and Indiana Wesleyan commit was a dynamic force this season. His 15.8 points a game and 88 3-pointers led the Bulldogs to their first ever Upstate Eight Conference River Division championship. Coffey shot over 40 percent from the field and 75 percent from the foul line, but developed a much better ability to drive to the basket as a senior. He guided Batavia to its first 20-win season since 2007-08 and a spot in the Class 4A St. Charles East Regional championship game.

Ryan David Kaneland, sr., F/G David did a little bit of everything for the Knights. He averaged 13 points a game and led the team with 45 blocks.

The 6-foot-4 senior shot nearly 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line while helping the Knights and first-year head coach Joe Conroy to the Class 3A Kaneland Regional championship.

Bennett Fuzak Geneva, sr., F Despite missing six games due to a concussion, Fuzak made an huge impact for the Vikings. His 16.7 points a game were a team-high, as he helped Geneva to a 22-7 record. The 6-foot-8 Fuzak recently committed to NCAA Division II Union University in Tennessee.

Ryan Fitzgerald Burlington Central, sr., C The 6-foot-6 Fitzgerald averaged 17.6 points a game and pulled down almost seven rebounds a game. He helped Burlington Central to a 25-4 record and a spot in the Class 3A Glenbard South Regional Championship game.

about some of Woods’ halftime speeches, especially if the Saints trailed when he felt they shouldn’t have been.

“His face would be like tomato red,” Hondlik said. “It’s funny to think about now and when you talk with the guys afterward, but in the moment, you took him very seriously. He was just the kind of coach that knew how to get the best out of us no matter what we were doing.”

“I went through a difficult time off the court during the season, and he was always there for me,” DiLeonardi said. “He always told us that he was there for us if we ever needed anything, and that developed trust. We all trusted coach Woods and I think when you develop that trust, it makes you want to play and give the effort for him even more.”

It may have taken most of the season to develop the belief that they were good enough, but Woods knew it would be there when it mattered most.

It’s more than easy for high school athletes to develop that sense of swagger or an egotistical side to them when they succeed, but that wasn’t in the thought process for Coffey.

And it wasn’t just noticed by those at Batavia.

“The word is confidence,” St. Charles North coach Tom Poulin said. “I coached against three of the Coffeys, and there hasn’t been a more respectful class act. Canaan Coffey is exactly the kind of person that anyone would want to represent their program. He’s someone who deserves the praise he gets and to hear what others think. He’s earned it.”

“It’s hard to game plan for someone like him,” St. Charles East coach Pat Woods said. “Not just because of his skills and abilities on the court, but he’s a competitor. No matter how you game plan for someone with a competitive nature like Canaan Coffey, they seem to always find a way to succeed. If you made any sort of mistake, he’s at the top of the list to make you pay for it every time.”

Although Geneva guard Sean Chambers smiled while recalling “friendly” conversations with Coffey during matchups on both the football field and basketball court, Coffey always retains his humility and will be the first one to deflect any accolades to his teammates.

In football, he couldn’t shine as a wide receiver without best friend and quarterback Kyle Niemiec throwing him the ball, and he said the same for his teammates putting him in good spots to put the ball in the basket this winter.

“I honestly could not have had the success I’ve had without the guys that have been by my side,” Coffey said. “Without every single guy that stepped on that court with me executing those plays and being unselfish to get me the ball, I couldn’t have done much of what I did. It’s crazy to think that my four years playing sports at Batavia is over, but it’s been a fun few years that I’ll never forget.”

Nazos said Coffey was usually the first one in the gym, and often the last one to leave. He’ll leave Batavia for Indiana Wesleyan this spring to continue his basketball career upon graduation, but his winning attitude is sure to follow.

North gets best of ‘friendly rivalry’

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North badminton team’s near sweep of doubles competition boosted the North Stars to a 10-5 victory over crosstown rival St. Charles East on Tuesday.

Winning four of five doubles matches over the host Saints to start the meet gave the North Stars a comfortable lead as they also won six of the 10 singles contests in the Upstate

Eight Conference clash.

It also marked the first time in at least five years that North topped East in the badminton.

“It’s your typical crosstown rivalry, but the East coach and I get along really well, so it’s a very friendly rivalry,” North coach Michael Smith said. “We were … just talking earlier. I think it has been five years since North has beaten East, so it feels pretty good to be on the right side of the score.”

“Yes, it has been like five years,” East coach Tricia DeNorio said in agreement.

DeNorio attributed the North Stars’ victory to their senior-laden roster.

“They are more experienced than

my girls,” DeNorio said. “We are holding sophomores and juniors on varsity.”

“Definitely a really good feeling,” North’s Kajal Thakkar about the win.

“They put up a great fight and made us work a lot.”

North (3-1, 3-0 UEC) also is off to one of its best conference starts in a long time.

“All the senior leadership and experience is paying off,” Smith said.

East (2-2, 2-1) won in No. 1 doubles as Hiral Patel and Vaidehi Panchal beat Jessica Foor and Kaitlin Hartig in two sets, 21-17, 21-14.

But it was all North in the remaining doubles matches.

Thakkar and Sklyar Igelski downed East’s Emma Hardy and Jiya Patel in two sets, 21-18, 21-14, at No. 2 doubles.

“My partner Skylar and I are really good at talking to each other,” Thakkar said. “I know exactly where she’s going to put the birdie, and she knows exactly where I want to put it.”

Hardy came back to win in No. 2 singles in three sets over Igleski.

The sophomore dropped the first set, 17-21, won the second, 21-19, and needed four extra points to take the third, 25-21.

“I think it was all just mental,” Hardy said. “I was using a lot of strategy.”

“She did a nice job of moving around on the court and she was able to execute her shots,” DeNorio said.

Gutesha, St. Charles East softball pick up first win

Why he was selected: Karkos stopped 24 of 26 shots while making a number of crucial saves to keep the Fox Valley Hawks club boys hockey team afloat in Saturday’s Game 3 of the Illinois Suburban Hockey League Cougar Cup finals.

Fox Valley Hawks goaltender and Batavia student Aaron Karkos was arguably the club’s best player Saturday. His performance was somewhat overshadowed by a shutout from the DuPage netminder in a 2-0 loss for the Hawks, but his performance did not go unnoticed by coach Phil Gabrielsen, who called Karkos’ effort “fantastic.”

Karkos, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey to discuss his effort and the Hawks’ season. An edited transcript follows: What did you expect coming into the deciding Game 3?

We knew things would be different than the first two, and right off the bat you saw it. Their defense was tighter

and so was ours. It was definitely a defensive game.

How would you rate your defense in front of you?

Our defense did a great job. They did a nice job of moving the puck out of our zone when they could to try and generate some offensive chances. We played a great game, but hats off to their goalie for having a great game as well.

After falling behind 2-0, did you feel you had to save everything with the way the game was going?

Absolutely. That exactly what my coach said to me. He said, “That’s it.

No more goals are going in.” I knew it would make it near impossible to come back, so that’s what I did.

“The key was offensively we had a couple of big two-out hits, that was a huge difference, and really, we battled defensively through some tough situations,” Saints coach Jarod Gutesha said.

The victory was the first for Gutesha, who took the program’s reins entering the season after seven years as an assistant to predecessor Kelly Horan.

“To tell you the truth,” Gutesha said, “knowing the kids and obviously the game, it’s a smooth transition. …

But the story is the kids. Everything we’re asking them to do, they’re doing.”

Generic drugs work as well as their brand-name counterparts Dear Dr. K: My doctor switched me from several brand-name drugs to generic versions of those drugs. It has saved me a lot of money – but are they really as good for me?

Dear Reader: The vast majority of generic drugs have been shown to be equally effective as brand-name drugs, and no more likely to cause side effects. There have been a few exceptions, which I’ll mention. But that is my bottom line – and I vote with my feet: I take generic drugs. They work as well as the brand-name drugs they replaced, they haven’t caused side effects and they save me money. What’s not to like?

Drugs available in the United States are carefully examined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA makes sure a generic drug has the same chemical structure as a brand-name drug, and the generic drug behaves the same way in the body.

Still, once the FDA has released a generic drug for widespread use, a much larger number of people take it than was true when it was being tested in the pre-approval period.

That means rare problems may emerge in the post-approval period.

There have been many careful studies comparing generic drugs to their brandname equivalents in the post-approval period. Almost always, the generics prove identical. However, there have been a few instances where the generic drug was not equivalent – at least until a problem in the manufacturing process was corrected. Examples include some generic drugs to treat underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).

In late 2015, an expert committee of the American College of Physicians summarized what is known scientifically about generic drugs. The committee’s report agrees with

tionist. The nation’s experiment to ban the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol 90-some years ago was a failure. What’s needed is sensible regulation.

It’s true many adults manage to drink alcohol in moderation without harming themselves, their loved ones or society in general. And the recent popularity of the “designated driver” no doubt has made our roads a little safer.

But teenagers are just entering the world of adult responsibility and consequences, are highly susceptible to peer pressure and often, quite frankly, lack good judgment. I say this based on my experience as

a high school principal. Some teens think they’re invincible.

The last thing they need in their lives is easy access to alcohol, which blurs the moral edges and heightens every foolish tendency.

My main concern, if the minimum drinking age were lowered, would be highway safety. The following facts are “sobering”: Alcohol-related accidents are the number one killer of young people. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported more than 10,000 young adults age 16 to 24 are killed each year in all kinds of alcohol-related accidents. The combination of youthful exuberance and alcohol is a deadly combination – for the youthful drinkers as well as for the rest of our population.

You have less than a year to go before you can enjoy a glass of wine at an Italian restaurant, Tony. Show a little patience.

Doing so also will make you a better driver.

If you can’t wait until you are 21 to consume wine at an Italian restaurant, there are flights every day from New York to Rome, and I’m sure the Italians will welcome you.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My sister and I have no interest Jeanne in body piercing Phillips (except our ears), but we have seen it on friends and are not impressed. However, our 44-year-old mom got her nipples pierced and has started wearing jewelry there.

Our parents are divorced and she’s not in a relationship right now, so it’s not to impress a man. She says she did it to feel good about herself, which makes no sense to us. She takes off her top to show her female friends when they come over, and we can see them literally roll their eyes, but she doesn’t seem to notice.

She now has started showing off her piercings to our friends. I’m talking about girlfriends, but even so, we find this beyond embarrassing. They’re polite to her face but laugh behind her back, and word about it has spread, which we find humiliating. I suppose we should be thankful at least she hasn’t pierced her most personal place to show off to our friends like we’ve seen some girls do.

We think some kind of midlife crisis or hormonal imbalance is causing her to act this way, but we wish she’d find a better outlet.

A bridge player needs to be a detective. There are clues littered around every deal, just waiting to be interpreted correctly.

In today’s deal, first there is a bidding question. North opens one club, East overcalls one heart, South responds one spade, and North raises to two spades. What should South do now?

Then we don our deerstalker and decide what South should do in four spades. West leads the heart jack.

East wins with his king, cashes the heart ace, and continues with the heart five. When South ruffs up with the spade six, West discards a diamond. How should South continue?

If responder bids one of a major and is raised by opener to two of that major, responder passes with nine losers, insists on game with seven losers, and makes a game-try with eight losers. So, here, South, over two spades, continues with three clubs. Then North should jump to four spades because he has good clubs, two aces and four-card spade support.

South, who must hold his pointed-suit losers to one, would usually take the spade finesse. However, if West had that king, surely he would have overruffed at trick three. South should lead his spade queen, then put up dummy’s ace. Here, the king drops, and declarer can claim. But if the king does not appear, South plays another trump and hopes clubs are 3-3 or East can be squeezed if he has four clubs and the diamond king.
