Garage fire causes $60K in damage

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com WAYNE – A garage fire that caused an estimated $60,000 in damage early Saturday evening remains under investigation, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the incident, which fire crews first received as a report at 6:28 p.m. Saturday of a structure fire with a large column of smoke. The garage is on the 33W700 block of White Thorne Road in Wayne, according to a news release from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/ Rescue District.

Upon arrival at 6:34 p.m.

Saturday, firefighters found a large single-story ranch home with its large three-car garage fully engulfed in flames, the release states. Fire crews confirmed all occupants of the house were outside. “[The] fire was impinging on the home on the west side of the garage and beginning to ignite siding/roof components on the home,” fire officials wrote in the release.

Firefighters used a truck-mounted water cannon to provide an initial knockdown of the fire, which was eventually extinguished. The garage had already begun to collapse from the damage and

was “totally destroyed,” according to the release.

“A couple of guys were saying it was the hottest fire they’ve experienced,” said Greg Benson, the district’s fire chief, in a phone interview Sunday afternoon. “The heat coming off that thing was incredibly intense.”

The fire was under control by 7:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the release. The provided damage estimate was $40,000 of property damage and $20,000 of damage to the contents.

A car in front of the garage was damaged by the extreme heat from the fire prior to the

firefighters’ arrival, the release states. There was minimal damage to the roof and siding of the home.

“The damage to the house was very minor and had nothing to do with the habitable space,” Benson said.

Assistance was provided to the family at the property after the incident, according to the release.

Utility companies and a fire investigator were notified. The Kane County Office of Emergency Management provided traffic and lighting assistance to start the investigation, according to the release.

There was some grill cooking going on under the overhang of the garage a couple of hours before the fire, but as of Sunday afternoon its connection to the blaze was not confirmed, Benson said.

A tender water supply operation had to be set up in the street with pumping to a truck at the fire due to the home’s distance from the street, the release states.

The fire departments that assisted the district with this incident were Bartlett, East Dundee, Elgin, Pingree Grove, St. Charles, South Elgin, West Chicago and West Dundee, according to the release.

Business brings Japanese wellness technique to St. Charles

LightWorks Energy began operating out of Tranquility Spa and Wellness Center, 113 N. 2nd Ave., St. Charles, in December. LightWorks owner Isabel Andrews also works out of a Naperville location, but she is currently focused on growing a Tri-Cities customer base.

At LightWorks, Andrews offers a Japanese energy wellness technique known as Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”).

The technique involves using a light touch – as if someone had gently placed a hand on someone else’s arm – on fully-clothed clients to help them heal.

People have come to Andrews with various ailments such as anxiety attacks, preand post-surgical care, headaches and more. During the therapy, patients describe the effect as a feeling of warmth or tingling.

“I think there’s a lot of misconception,” Andrews said. “Reiki is really very

applicable for everyday life situations … whether they be physically, mental, emotional or spiritual.”

Andrews was a skeptic herself of the technique before she saw her first Reiki

practitioner about seven years ago. She had difficulty recovering from the C-section delivery of her daughter, Paloma. “[The practioner] just blew my mind with how she

was able to assess what had happened to me without me telling her,” Andrews said.

Andrews sought out someone who could teach her the technique, and now she is a Reiki Master as well as a student of Healing Touch, a nurturing energy therapy.

She has been practicing since 2009, and LightWorks Energy became a professional practice in 2012.

Even with their benefits, neither Reiki nor Healing Touch are seen as substitutes to traditional medical practices, Andrews said.

“I encourage them to always take a team approach to their wellness,” she said of her clients.

About 200 walk in inaugural 5K to raise awareness for suicide prevention

ST. CHARLES – As someone who has suffered from depression, St. Charles East High School sophomore Noah Fata said he knows the importance of lending a hand to others who have the same struggle.

Fata was one of more than 200 people who participated in the inaugural St. Charles East HOPE Hustle held Saturday at the St. Charles East High School campus. The event was hosted by the St. Charles East student club HOPE, which focuses on student well-being.

The acronym stands for Helping Others Protect Each other.

“I will try my best to help anybody from feeling down,” said Fata, who also is a member of the high school’s track team.

The event featured a youth mile, a 5K fun run and a timed 5K challenge. Participating with Fata was fellow St. Charles East track member Zach Perry.

“It was for a good cause,” Perry said. “I enjoy running.”

St. Charles East junior and club member Kevin Sobieski said the idea behind the event was to increase awareness about suicide prevention.

“The more people think about it, the more people will be willing to reach out,” he

She said she hoped the message of the day resonated with

participants.

“By coming together and being here, we are kind of saying, ‘There’s a place for everybody. We’re all here to support each other.’ And this is a way to kind of get active,” she said.

“This is exercise. It’s good for you. It makes you feel better.”

Sharbaugh said she would like the HOPE Hustle to become an annual event.

“I think that’s the goal,” she said. “We’re already taking notes on what we can do better for next year. We want to make it better and better every year.”

Geneva fades in second half, lands 4th

Saturday’s 63-42 loss to Bolingbrook in the IHSA Class 4A third-place game devolved for Geneva on multiple levels, but the Vikings secured their place in program history long before being saluted by their fans in the waning moments and during their medal presentation.

Geneva (30-5) finished tied for most single-season wins in program history with the 1962-63 team, the last Vikings squad to advance downstate.

“I think many people didn’t have us getting out of our own regional,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “So for us to have gotten as far as we have, I couldn’t be more proud.”

Geneva led, 19-15, at halftime, but floundered in the second half, with Ralston and players agreeing fatigue – perhaps mental as well as physical – played a part.

“The numbers say so,” Geneva senior guard Daniel Santacaterina said.

“I think we just lost ourselves a little bit. I don’t think it was anything they did. … We beat ourselves a little bit.

We just needed to take a deep breath and play like we usually do, but it didn’t happen.”

Bolingbrook assumed control in the third quarter as the Raiders’ press regularly disturbed the Vikings. The Raiders outscored the Vikings in the quarter, 20-9, to take a 35-28 lead heading into the fourth.

Matters only worsened from there for Geneva. The Raiders went to the free-throw line an astounding 33 times in the second half after failing to attempt a single free throw in the opening half.

“It’s not that they quit or gave up.

They threw everything they had into it to the end,” Ralston said of his players. “Credit Bolingbrook for adding that level of pressure to us, changing up the game, and we just couldn’t respond. It’s a shame that we couldn’t get it done, but it just happened that

The night took an ugly turn in the fourth quarter when junior center Loudon Vollbrecht, after missing a free throw, put his football background on display in a scrum for the offense rebound that turned nasty. He

had to be restrained by teammates after being separated from the pile, and once referees sorted out the aftermath, Vollbrecht was ejected.

The ensuing technical free throws put the Raiders ahead, 45-31, with 4:38 to play in the game.

Geneva uncharacteristically went 7 for 18 from the free-throw line in the game, with Vollbrecht’s 0 for 5 showing at the line – and a rough second half in Friday’s two-point, semifinal loss to Normal – surely contributing to the junior’s surly spirits.

“Obviously I think part of it was some frustration,” Ralston said. “It is what it is. We’ll have to deal with that. I don’t necessarily agree with the [ejection] but that’s not for me to decide.”

Bolingbrook (25-7) featured balanced scoring, led by Colorado State recruit Prentiss Nixon (15 points), and the Raiders outrebounded Geneva, 29-23 – a category the Vikings usually dominate.

“I challenged our guys at the beginning of the game that the easy thing to do would be just to coast through and take the first trophy for boys basketball in the history of the school,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said.

“That would be the easy thing to do, but the right thing to do is to play right and win and get third place, and get out of here with the third place trophy. At halftime, I re-challenged them with the same thing, and to their credit, they responded like they’ve done all season.”

With a typically subdued atmosphere in the arena for a third-place game, Ralston exhorted Geneva’s bench to perk up just before the game tipped. Then, Geneva senior standout Nate Navigato gave his teammates something to cheer about, scoring nine points in the game’s first 3½ minutes.

For the second straight night, Navigato (15 points) was the lone Viking to score in double figures, but the Raiders defended Geneva’s all-time scoring leader well after his sizzling start. He was among a batch of regulars subbed out in the late stages, and watched the final moments with a towel draped over his head.

Vollbrecht scored eight points to go with seven rebounds and senior guard Pace Temple added six points for a Geneva squad that eliminated five opponents with more than 20 wins on its path to Peoria.

BATAVIA – Youthful exuberance led the Batavia girls track team to an Upstate Eight Conference indoor championship in their home field house Saturday afternoon.

The result was secured in unexpected fashion, as freshman Toriana Ortiz and sophomore Hannah Schlaman finished first and second in the 200 meters, upsetting upperclassmen counterparts Samara Miller of Neuqua Valley and Allison Chmelik of St. Charles East.

Ortiz was thrilled with her win in the 200, yet not surprised, saying, “I try to be my best all the time, and it gives me such a push knowing that I’m the youngest person on varsity. Running with all these older girls, I try to be the best that I can be and know it’s just as good as them.”

Schlaman also won the 55 meters for the Bulldogs, while Courtney Glassman took the pole vault championship. Batavia also won the 800 and 3,200 relays en route to scoring 124.5 team points, 21.5 better than co-runner-up East.

“The girls competed beyond expectations, and we always have high expectations,” Bulldogs coach Justin Allison said.

“They came together and everybody contributed.”

Dear Abby: My family is big on sports and discusses them at every gathering, big or small. I played sports growing up, but I don’t care to follow them in my adult life like the rest of my family does. Sometimes I’m left out of conversations because of my lack of knowledge on the current stats, etc. I have always refrained from speaking about the things I’m passionate about because of lack of interest from them.

My good friend said maybe I’m considered less of a man by my brothers and my dad because of my apathy about sports. I served eight years in the Army, with four deployments between Iraq and Afghanistan, and was wounded twice. Not a man?

Small changes in bridge deals can result in surprising changes in the best play. This week we will look at three pairs of deals and see how minor alterations affect the correct lines of play or defense.

In the first two, entries are an important factor. In particular, if declarer is establishing a long suit, he may need an entry to reach the new winners. In this deal, what is South’s dummy entry? How should he play in three no-trump after West leads his heart queen?

South’s two-spade rebid forced to game and promised four spades and at least five clubs. North’s rebid guaranteed at least a sixcard suit, then South went for the nine-trick game.

Declarer starts with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. From where might he get the extra winners?

Right – both minors might do the necessary. But in clubs, declarer will need an unlikely 3-3 break; whereas in diamonds, he requires a likely 3-2 split.

However, as you have no doubt noticed, if South plays three rounds of diamonds, he will establish three winners, but will have no way to reach them.

Declarer must lose the first diamond trick, not the third.

Then his dummy entry is in the diamond suit itself. South cruises home with an overtrick.
