t’s been a busy week at the Kane County Chronicle, with Tuesday’s primary election and our end-ofyear girls and boys basketball coverage.

So, it was nice to stop to take a breather and enjoy the view of an adult bald eagle resting in a tree as I was leaving the Kane County Farm Bureau’s annual agriculture day at Mooseheart on Wednesday morning.

Mooseheart has been home to eagles for several years, and it’s nice that they still like to call the area home.

Former Moo La La location reopens as Dairy Queen KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The former Moo La La reopened Thursday as the Batavia Dairy Queen, at 1134 W. Wilson St., Batavia. It is under the ownership of Noble Stores LLC, officials said.

Originally built as a Dairy

Queen, the site most recently operated as Moo La La. Since acquiring the property in January, Noble Stores, LLC has converted the store back into a Dairy Queen.

The company spent the past two months making improvements to the store, Jeff Webster, Noble’s vice president of

operations, said in a statement.

The store will be managed by Evelyn Martinez, who has served as manager at the Dairy Queen on Lake Street in Aurora for the past three years.

Noble Dairy Queen is the Original DQ franchisee.

Founder Sherb Noble first introduced the revolutionary

“soft-serve” ice cream product at his Kankakee Ice Cream shop in 1938. Two years later he opened the first Dairy Queen in Joliet and now there are more than 6,000 Dairy Queens in 20 countries.

A grand opening for the Batavia store is expected to be scheduled later this spring.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Forest Preserve to have ‘Senior Stroll’ April 3 SOUTH ELGIN – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will have a “Senior Stroll” event from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

April 3 at Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve, 35W003 Route 31, South Elgin.

Forest preserve naturalists will lead a leisurely walk and share ecology highlights along the way.

The strolls last about an hour, with social time and refreshments after the walk.

All seniors are welcome.

Bunco for Pets event planned in Batavia BATAVIA – Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets will host an event, Bunco for Pets, at 6 p.m. April 25 at Riverview Banquets, 1117 N. Washington Ave., Batavia.

The kids’ events begin at approximately 8:45 a.m.

Advance registration for all events is encouraged.

The advance registration cost for the 5K is $25 a runner, and the advance registration cost for the 10K is $35 a runner.

There is no charge for either Kids’ Fun Run, but a donation of $10 a child is suggested.

Funds raised through this event will support Batavia schools and other educational opportunities for local families.

Petting zoo owner to forfeit some animals

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A judge ruled Thursday that a petting zoo owner charged with animal cruelty had to forfeit her claim to alpacas and llamas, all in a condition which a veterinarian described as so bad as to be “living skeletons.”

Stacy Fiebelkorn, of Elgin, already had agreed to give up all the rabbits and poultry from her traveling petting zoo, Mini Zoo Crew, but she fought to keep the rest of them, some 27 horses, two goats, donkeys, llamas and alpacas.

Associate Kane County Judge Elizabeth Flood made her ruling after about five hours in a second day of testimony on a Kane County State’s Attorney’s effort to have Fiebelkorn forfeit all the animals.

Veterinarian Susan Brown testified that too many animals were crowded together with too few feeding stations. This leads to a condition called “social

starvation” in which the stronger animals eat all the food and the others would not get enough or any, she said.

“Most were emaciated,” Brown said of the llamas and alpacas. “The worst were the female and baby alpaca, they were like living skeletons.”

Flood determined that although veterinarians Stacy testified the Fiebelkorn animals were thin, she denied the motion to forfeit.

The forfeiture allows the county to find homes for the alpacas and llamas, officials said.

Fiebelkorn still faces a request from the county to provide security to pay for the continuing care and feeding of all the animals it impounded last week.

The animals were removed from a property Fiebelkorn rented in Hampshire to two other farms in

Maple Park at undisclosed locations.

Last week, prosecutors asked Fiebelkorn to post $36,786 to cover 30 days of the cost of day-to-day care of 93 animals.

According to state law, once an amount of security is set, the animals’ owner has five days in which to post the money or the animals are forfeited, assistant state’s attorneys said.

Flood scheduled a hearing on posting security for March 26 at Kane County Branch Court.

Still pending against Fiebelkorn are charges of animal cruelty and a violation of an animal owner’s duty to provide food and care, both misdemeanors.

In total, 11 animals and a horse fetus were found dead and 94 in need of food and water, officials said. One had to be put down, reducing the number to 93.

The horse and fetus were found on a farm near Maple Park, the rest at the Hampshire Township location, officials said.

Foundation to host annual Fox Trot 5K races BATAVIA – The Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation will host its 14th annual Fox Trot 5K and 10K race April 26 at the Batavia Riverwalk, Island Avenue and Houston Street in Batavia.

The race features a new 10K route.

Both races feature courses along the Fox River in downtown Batavia.

Participants can register online before the event or at the event on race day.

The start time for both the 5K and 10K is 8 a.m.

There are awards for the winners of both races in all age groups following the race.

Two businesses cited during compliance check

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two businesses were caught in February selling alcohol to minors, according to a news release from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.

The commission cited Rookies, 1545 W. Main St., and Walmart, 150 Smith Road, for violation of liquor control laws. A total of six

St. Charles businesses were checked Feb. 27 during an alcohol underage compliance check with the Secretary of State Police.

In all, 49 licensees in February were cited out of 211 businesses visited statewide, the news release states. State liquor control commission agents work with local law enforcement and underage volunteers ages 18 through 20 to complete the compliance

Each local business also will have a hearing before the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission, said Steve Huffman, St. Charles interim police chief.

St. Charles police have not yet received the full compliance check reports from the state, Huffman said.

Huffman could not recall any other recent citation for underage alcohol sales at either business.

Dolce Bakery and Cafe closes doors

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Dolce Bakery and Cafe, 131 S. First St., closed for business sometime earlier this week, city officials and a neighboring business said.

Matt O’Rourke, St. Charles economic development division manager, said his department found out about the closure Monday, but had no other details.

“It kind of took us by surprise a little bit,” he said.

Sales associate Alex Suptela of JP Jewelers, located at 151 S. First St. – next door to the bakery – said he spoke to owner Stephanie Heitzman on Sunday.

When he was inside her store that day, he saw that half of her display cases were completely empty, he said.

Heitzman said they were selling the last of their inventory and that the store was closing for good, Suptela said.

“We’re sorry to see them go,” he said.

Heitzman on Thursday did not respond to multiple phone calls seeking comment. She has owned and operated the bakery since June 2013, after previous owner Sean Glore offered to sell the bakery to her and have her pay in installments.

Heitzman first joined the bakery as a clerk in spring 2011, about two years after the business first opened. Then

On Thursday the bakery had the word “closed” printed on two white sheets of paper, taped on the inside of each entrance.

All of the customer chairs were folded over tables, and

the display cases were all empty. The bakery’s website, dolcebakerycafe.com, only says, “Our Site is Currently Unavailable” and “Thank you for your patronage!”

The bakery was the first ground-level retail shop to open in the building known as The Plaza, which is part of the

First Street redevelopment project and includes the cityowned parking garage.

City officials and businesses alike have been waiting for the next phase of the project, which involves two developers for property bordered by the Fox River and Illinois, First and Main streets. Each

developer has an April 8 deadline to show progress on their respective projects.

Part of the land across the street from The Plaza currently sits vacant, and another part is used for parking.

“Nothing’s booming; nothing growing here,” Suptela said.

Egg hunt planned

Park District’s Teen Night Owl Egg Hunt, which starts at 7:30 p.m. April 11 at Wheeler Park, 101 North St., Geneva.

Participants should bring a flashlight and dress appropriately for the weather.

The cost is $5 a person ($8

Quarry Beach season passes on sale Monday BATAVIA – Hall Quarry Beach Season Passes go on sale Monday.

The first 100 households to purchase a season pass will receive a complimentary beach ball.

The season has been extended, and Hall Quarry Beach will open Memorial Day weekend, weather pending. Several items will be added to the concession stand, and more deck chairs will be added.

Games and events will be held throughout the summer, and several new attractions are being added.

Northern Kane Chorale looking for singers PINGREE GROVE – The newly formed Northern Kane Chorale is looking for singers who enjoy singing in a choral setting.

Police: Mom, son Coroner criticized for car choice charged in Randall Road stop in STC

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 31-yearold man was being held on $1,500 bond on charges stemming from an incident on Randall Road on Wednesday in St. Charles, police said.

Richard Allen Richard Allen Kubica and Kubica his mother, Amelia Lynn Troutman, both of St. Charles, were pulled over in the 300 block of North Amelia Lynn Randall Road Troutman on Wednesday evening for an expired registration, St. Charles Interim Chief Steve Huffman said.

Kubica and Troutman gave the officer grief, and Kubica

put the car in drive and left, Huffman said. Traffic, however, was backed up, Huffman said, and police soon stopped the pair again.

Kubica was charged with disobeying a traffic signal, speeding, driving without insurance, driving with a suspended registration, fleeing or eluding police, driving with a suspended or revoked license, obstructing or resisting police and transporting a handgun incorrectly.

Huffman said handguns must be transported in a nonfunctional state. The gun in Kubica’s vehicle was in a functional state, he said.

Online records from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office indicated Kubica was being held Thursday on $1,500 bond.

Troutman, 52, was charged with resisting police because of her behavior during the second traffic stop, Huffman said. Sheriff’s records did not have her listed in custody.

GENEVA – The Geneva Academic Foundation is looking for new board members for next year.

GAF is an organization that raises money to fund teacher grant requests, at all of the School District 304 schools, for items that will enrich the education of the students.

GENEVA – After another meeting of explaining his decisions to County Board members, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell on Thursday said that everything he does seems to get excessively scrutinized.

Russell plans to spend $45,000 of his 2014 budget on a Chevrolet Suburban to replace an existing vehicle.

Members of the Administration Committee criticized his choice.

Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said he understands the reasons for the replacement, but he is concerned about replacing a full-sized van with a four-wheel drive, “gas guzzling” SUV. The vehicle will be expensive to own and operate, he said.

Doug Scheflow, R-Elgin, was concerned that Russell picked a vehicle from a car dealership and not one eligible for state pricing.

Russell said it is important that he has internal control to decide which vehicle his office needs.

He said he needs a vehicle that can navigate various conditions since bodies are sometimes found in such places as forest preserves, where the terrain can be muddy.

The goal is to get the vehicle as close to the body as possible, he said.

Myrna Molina, D-Aurora, said Russell’s approved budget included the vehicle replacement, and it was up to the committee to make sure he followed procedure.

“If he thinks he needs a helicopter, we have no say in it,” Frasz said.

Jacob Matthew Huff, 33, of the 1400 block of Irving Park Road, was charged with driving under the influence

Saturday at Second and West Main streets. Although Huff left the scene, police located him within minutes, Huffman said.

Huff also was charged with driving with a revoked license – his second offense – and three counts of aggravated DUI, all Class 4 felonies, according to Kane County court records.

He is expected in court Wednesday.

I met with Kane County Board member Melisa Taylor, who was running for her third term on the board, at the McDonald’s parking lot on Route 47 in Sugar Grove on a sunny Wednesday afternoon before the primary election. The back seat of her car was crammed with a case of misprinted Kleenex boxes to be donated to the Between Friends Food Pantry in Sugar Grove. Working at the food pantry is one of many hats Taylor wears.

4:03 p.m. – Melisa Taylor takes a phone call from a campaign worker as she snacks on a cereal bar. “I live on cereal bars,” she says.

4:21 p.m. – We pull up along a street in the Mallard Point subdivision in Sugar Grove, and Taylor goes over her notes and papers of registered Republicans and their addresses.

4:26 p.m. – The irst house has a Bill Lenert (Taylor’s opponent) campaign sign on the lawn.

4:28 p.m. – Second house, no one home.

“We would be walking,” says Taylor as

we drive into each driveway, “but no sidewalks.”

4:36 p.m. – Taylor meets with resident Brian Schiber.

4:53 p.m. – After speaking with the teenage daughter of a homeowner, Taylor gets the OK to post a sign in their front yard. “I’ve known the family for 10 years,” she says.

5:02 p.m. – On the search for an elusive street, Essex Court.

5:06 p.m. – “I’ve actually talked to a lot of these people on the phone,” says Taylor, as we pull into another driveway.

5:12 p.m. – Taylor chats with resident Leo Brown as his dog, Lola, sniffs around the front porch.

5:20 p.m. – Taylor decides to head over to the Dugan Woods area of Sugar Grove.

5:35 p.m. – As we drive through the neighborhood and she assesses some of the homes, Taylor says, “Usually, if they have an American lag hanging, they vote.”

5:54 p.m. – As we walk up to a home, our last of the day, Taylor notes that she knows the homeowner from her work at the food pantry. Gary and Sandra Knuth invite her inside as Taylor scoops up their small dog. “You’re a get-it-done kind of woman,” Gary Knuth says.

10:44 a.m. – We meet in the parking lot and go over a plan to head to the Big Rock area to knock on 55 doors.

Lenert has a detailed list in hand of Republican voters, listed by address, who have voted in past primary elections.

10:54 a.m. – We leave my car in the parking lot of Dekane Equipment Corp.

At 10 degrees and sunny with blue skies, it’s “by far the nicest day in six weekends,” Lenert says. There are 22,000 people in Kane County Board District 5, and Lenert planned on knocking on 100 doors every weekend leading up to the election.

11:14 a.m. – We pull up to the first home on Jericho Road in Big Rock. No one home, so Lenert leaves a plastic sleeve filled with his campaign materials in the door of the home.

11:21 a.m. – Two houses down, no one home. “It’s not too glamorous, but it is neat when you get to talk to someone,” Lenert says.

11:26 a.m. – Third home, and a quick chat with the homeowner.

11:29 a.m. – Another home in a rural area. After evaluating the long, snowy driveway, Lenert decides to hike the

rest of the way to the door by foot. “If I’m gonna get involved, I’ll do my best job,” he says.

11:42 a.m. – Lenert meets with a resident and chats about their mutual affiliation with Benedictine College, where Lenert earned a master’s in business administration.

11:52 a.m. – “I always get excited when I see cars in the driveway,” Lenert says.

12:01 p.m. – “Well, that was a good one,” after meeting a woman who answered the door.

12:16 p.m. – Lenert meets with Scott Lehrer, a sheep and organic vegetable farmer. They talk about fiscal responsibility. “Are you a Republican?”

Lehrer asks. “Well, you passed the first test.” “[Residents] are always friendly, and when they have time to visit, I like that,” Lenert says.

12:22 p.m. – 13 doors have been knocked on. Lenert estimates he campaigns around 30 hours every week.

12:35 p.m. – Another door. “How are you today?” Lenert asks. “Busy,” replied the homeowner.

12:40 p.m. – “Well, that was a first.

I hung the literature on the garage door,” Lenert says. “It’s the little joys in campaigning,” he says after pulling into a freshly plowed driveway.

12:52 p.m. – “Four more houses, and then it’s lunchtime,” he says.

Geneva Middle School North will serve as the pilot location for the program, called the Raptor V-Soft Visitor Management System, starting April 7.

When entering the school, all visitors will be required to present a driver’s license or other state-issued identification. The identification presented will be held in the main office and returned when the visitor leaves.

Visitors and volunteers cleared by the V-Soft System will be issued a visitor badge and lanyard that must be visibly worn while in the school and be returned to the school office upon leaving.

The system will print the visitor badge that includes a photo and name of the visitor and the time and date. If a potential visitor does not have a government-issued ID, that person will not be allowed access to the school. If a potential threat is identified, the V-Soft System instantly will alert designated officials, such as administrators and law enforcement, and visitors will be denied access to the building.

Geneva North Middle School’s size, entrance and number of visitors will provide officials with enough information to assess the system’s effectiveness for use throughout the district.

OPINIONS For many reasons, euthanasia should not be legalized Euthanasia. Until recently, I assumed it meant what it sounds like – the youth in Asia. I was clearly very far off.

Euthanasia is the act or practice of allowing a hopelessly sick or injured patient to die, rather than using medical measures to prolong life.

While people support euthanasia nationwide to end needless suffering, this creates a slippery slope. The more people that continue on to see euthanasia as an acceptable freedom, the more likely it will become legal for those who are not terminally ill. In effect, we would be legalizing suicide. This is not only unethical, but also goes against doctors’ Hippocratic Oath.

Euthanasia is currently legal in at least three countries: the Netherlands (since

2001), Belgium (2002) and Luxembourg (2008), according to procon.org; and at least four states allow physician-assisted suicide: Vermont, Oregon, Washington and Montana.

It is no surprise that the idea of an unnatural death seems unethical. Dr. Leon Kass says: “the deepest ethical principle restraining the physician’s power is not the autonomy or freedom of the patient; neither is it his own compassion or good intention.

Rather, it is the dignity and mysterious power of human life itself ... .”

Respecting the dignity of the human life is at the core of this argument. Those who are discounting the power of life are trying to play God and overstep their own boundaries.

GUEST VIEW Julia Angelotti Euthanasia is a direct violation of doctors’ Hippocratic Oath – a historic oath whereby health care professionals swear that, “To please no one will I prescribe a deadly drug nor give advice which may cause his death.”

That alone is enough for euthanasia to be deemed immoral, and probably illegal as well. Doctors take an oath promising that they will not give anyone their escape to death. The goal of medicine is to heal and not harm. It is the responsibility of the doctor to meet with patients and assess their needs before prescribing

medication.

There are some people in the world that believe humans have the right to choose the terms of their own death. I disagree. I do not believe that anyone beside God can decide when my life will end. The time of death is predestined at the time of creation for each individual. God created every person with his or her plan in mind and a purpose of life for that individual to satisfy. By allowing euthanasia, one is allowing their life purpose to be unfulfilled.

It is a selfish task for not only the attending physician, but also the person wanting the assisted suicide. The death of a person is a chain reaction, in terms of whom it affects.

Since this route to death is not natural, it will never sit

well with a loved one. Let the decision lay in God’s hands to decide when we should be brought home, since He is the one who put us here.

While the legalization of euthanasia will continue to be debated, it should remain illegal, as it goes against ethical beliefs and the Hippocratic Oath. God put each person here on earth when He did, and He should be the one to decide when our time is up.

Health care providers took an oath that they would not give the source to a patient that causes death.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A fine job To the Editor: Many people will write to complain about problems with local city services not done to their satisfaction. In this case, I write to compliment St. Charles on how well its police, fire and electrical departments reacted to a problem that occurred near my home.

On March 5 at about 3:45 p.m., my wife arrived at the corner of 15th and Oak streets in western St. Charles.

An accident had recently occurred, resulting in a broken electric pole, with wires down and a car on top of a snowdrift at the northwest corner of the intersection. As she left to find an alternate route home, she could hear emergency vehicles approaching. My home is only a few hundred feet from that intersection, so our power was

off. By the time I walked to where I could see the accident site, the police and fire departments were on the scene and in control.

We had plans to go to Chicago that evening, which required us to leave at 5 p.m., so I was concerned about leaving our house without heat on a cold night. But the power came on at 4:45 p.m. As we left, we could see that they had erected a temporary pole on the northeast corner of the intersection to lift the wires safely above 15th Street.

By the time we came home, the area was safe and the streets reopened, thanks to the St. Charles police, fire and electrical departments that did such fine job that night. Thank you!

Geneva’s Nate Navigato is the Kane County Chronicle Boys Basketball Player of the Year. marks this season the program has not seen since the 1980s, and Navigato’s judicious playmaking – the shots he took, and the ones he passed up – played a leading role.

St. Charles North coach Tom Poulin said it’s rare to find a player as skilled as Navigato who plays so selflessly.

“It’s more difficult to stop somebody like him when he’s making other people better, and he does that, and plays within a team system,”

Poulin said. “As a team they run such a disciplined system. It’s more difficult to stop him because that system puts him in positions that are advantageous and positions to be successful, which is harder to stop than if he just had the ball and was trying to beat you 1 on 5.”

After a breakout sophomore year, Navigato was sharper in just about all categories this season despite absorbing ramped-up defensive attention. Navigato’s statistical profile demonstrates his

apparent allergy to ill-advised shots.

In averaging a teamhigh 18.3 points a game, the 6-foot-7, 200-pound wing shot 52 percent from the floor, 40 percent from 3-point land and 87 percent from the free throw line. Whether drilling clean looks from the perimeter or scoring on spin moves and half hooks on the interior, Navigato seldom let fly a shot of that discerning Geneva coach Phil Ralston didn’t approve.

It wasn’t uncommon for

Navigato to begin games with relatively quiet first halves, but come crunch time, he typically was at his best – and most assertive.

“I’ve actually talked to my parents about that, too, and they always say I play way better in the second half than I do the first half,” said Navigato, also Geneva’s leading rebounder. “I don’t know, as the course of games goes on and it gets closer, just gets more tight, I just like rising to the occasion and being the player that gives the momentum to our team, gives our team the lead or maybe makes the lead even bigger.

That’s my favorite time to play, fourth quarter and it’s a really tight game, or second half.

ENEVA – Nate Navigato hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the United Center, blistered Bloomington for 41 points and was his team’s fourth quarter focal point for many of Geneva’s 25 victories.

Yet the junior forward’s favorite memory of the season involves somebody else playing hero, a revealing insight into the mindset of one of the state’s most unselfish stars.

“I’d just have to go with probably beating West Aurora because it was one of the biggest games I’ve ever played in,” Navigato said.

“Just the atmosphere was great and being able to beat them since we lost to them in the regional final [last year], and being able to go to the sectional final was a huge accomplishment for our team. And just seeing a senior, Chris Parrilli, hit the game-winning shot, it really felt awesome to be around him. It was a great feeling. I was so proud of him.”

Navigato, naturally, had plenty to do with positioning the Vikings to win that game.

That sectional semifinal triumph was one in a long line of tremendous performances this season for the Kane County Chronicle Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

That was nice, but winning a regional was hardly cause for major rejoicing, he figured.

Now, Ralston knows better.

Seventeen years later, Ralston finally was part of another regional championship team, having helped Geneva break a program drought that put his personal one to shame.

“Man, that’s a long time,” Ralston said of his own dry spell. “I thought it was going to be something I’d be doing every year, but that’s a young coach that didn’t understand how hard it was going to be to get back there.”

Ralston, the Kane County Chronicle Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, helped the Vikings successfully navigate a perilous postseason path.

Playing in the typically stacked IHSA Class 4A East Aurora Sectional, the Vikings won

their first regional title since 1986 and first sectional game since 1981 in capping off a 25-6 season.

Even with standout junior Nate Navigato and other quality returnees back from a 21win team the year before, the Vikings had to outperform their No. 6 seed to advance to the sectional Phil Ralston championship game.

“It would be absolutely wrong for me to say I predicted this was going to happen,” Ralston said.

Winning that elusive regional championship proved just as treacherous as Ralston expected. Geneva had to beat a Plainfield East team led by Illinois recruit Aaron Jordan on the Bengals’ home floor to open the postseason, then needed a furious fourth quarter rally in the regional final to oust Bolingbrook, the sectional’s No. 3 seed.

That set up a dramatic sectional semifinal victory against No. 2 seed West Aurora, which eliminated Geneva the year before. A back-and-forth game with the Blackhawks ended memorably for the Vikings as senior guard Chris Parrilli hit a short jumper with 3 seconds to play for a 70-68 Geneva win.

Ralston is an exacting taskmaster – not the easiest coach to play for – but Parrilli said Ralston seemed more open to incorporating suggestions from players and assistants this year than in the past.

Ralston – in his sixth year at Geneva after coming over from Grant – preaches working for high-percentage shots, and this year’s squad responded to the tune of an impressive 48 percent shooting from the floor.

ence season but finished on much sturdier footing, tying St. Charles East and St. Charles North for second in the Upstate Eight Conference River behind champion Larkin. Ralston said this year’s Vikings were more athletic than his previous teams, which might have caused them to take defense for granted until the coaching staff cracked down in January.

“I really think focusing on that aspect of our game, on the defensive end, really helped,” Ralston said. “I’m not sure we could have gotten much more out of our guys than we did from a standpoint of wins and losses. Obviously there were some disappointments, but to essentially go almost a full month from early February to almost mid-March without a loss, we kind of hit our stride at the right time.”

Navigato’s unselfish, spread-the-wealth approach extends to assigning credit to his basketball mentors.

“Probably all the coaches that have coached me,” Navigato said. “I can go down the line, just from when I was little in fifth grade on feeder teams until high school, just from working out with people, playing AAU. Those are probably the biggest influences.”

Stoic and focused on the floor – whether he’s pumping in 41 at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center or battling through a rare off-night, as he did in Geneva’s sectional final loss to Benet – Navigato lets loose with teammates behind the scenes.

“He’s definitely got another side to his personality,” Parrilli said. “He’s really just a goofy kid, a funny kid, just has fun. He definitely is comfortable with everyone on the team.

He knows when to take it serious in practice, but when we’re having a team dinner or in the locker room after practice, he’s definitely a really fun kid and a happy kid.”

Navigato has a trio of Division I scholarship offers – from Northern Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and South Dakota State – and his options are likely to expand by the end of his spring and summer runs with his AAU program, Mercury Elite.

He’s in no rush to make a decision, and said academics and clicking with the coaching staff will be leading drivers of his decision.

Between now and his senior season at Geneva,

Navigato plans to take Ralston’s challenge to bulk up in the weight room to heart. He also aims to become more explosive and keep refining his shooting and footwork, which already are major strengths.

“I’ll just work on different moves,” Navigato said.

“I’ll see maybe some NBA players do it or I’ll see a coach teach me it, and I just keep practicing it until it becomes permanent and I can just do it in the game, and it just flows.”

Navigato has triplet younger brothers – Cole, Devin and Dominic – who started on Geneva’s freshman team this season.

While it’s premature to know whether any of them might be ready to join Nate on the varsity next winter, Navigato said he enjoys leading by example for his younger siblings, including his little sister, a middle-schooler.

Ralston said the example set by his unselfish star resonates throughout the program.

“Nate’s not just a great role model for his siblings, he’s a tremendous role model for all the kids in our program,” Ralston said.

“When you look at a kid like Nate, and he’s arguably one of the best players in decades in the basketball program at Geneva, he’s not just setting the bar for his siblings, he’s setting it for all the kids in this program.”

STC skater Stammen relishes cruise career Madeline Stammen’s sport oozes glitz regardless of venue.

Put a professional figure skater on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, however, and we’re talking glamour overload.

Stammen sees the surprised looks when guests prepare to watch an ice show at sea.

The 20-yearold St. Charles East product hopes they can appreciate the Madeline elbow (and Stammen knee) grease that went into getting her on stage.

A competitive skater since age 6, Stammen continues increasing her comfort and mobility on the heels of tearing her right ACL in November 2012. “[The knee] clicks sometimes and I can’t straighten

That’s just as well. If you’re going to spend the majority of seven to eightmonth stints traveling in a huge boat, you might as well be comfortable.

Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph, the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush physician who performed the surgery, assures Stammen is just that after a recent check-up.

“Athletes with ACL injuries, they kind of go through a death and dying approach of first denial, then anger, then acceptance,” Bush-Joseph said. “But she’s got

great, supportive parents and really took that devotion to get herself back on track.”

And back on the boat.

One of Stammen’s coaches told her about Royal Caribbean’s ice skating shows shortly after Stammen turned 18. The opportunity fit Stammen’s longtime aspiration to skate professionally, so she created an audition tape, submitted it and eventually hailed a new horizon.

Royal Caribbean offers shows on its Oasis, Freedom and Voyager ships. Shows typically last 45 minutes, incorporating themes and solo or pairs numbers for each skater. Cruise lengths depend on the ship, and usually range from three to 14 days.

If there’s one downside to Stammen’s latest contract, it was the inability to watch the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics while at sea. Stammen wrote she was “really rooting for”

a couple former training partners with Illinois ties, including Jason Brown (Highland Park) and Gracie Gold (Chatham).

So far, Stammen’s favorite destination is Old San Juan, an historic settlement within Puerto Rico’s capital.

“The cobblestone streets, the old forts and the breathtaking ocean views never get old,” she wrote.

That isn’t to suggest Stammen is weary of her most familiar surroundings. She’s set to return home in July, and remains in touch with family and friends via social media.

“I plan on continuing to develop my skating skills and travel as a professional skater,” Stammen wrote. “There are so many opportunities, big and small, and all around the world for us.”

Jordan Malone, a silver medalist as part of the Americans’ short-track 5,000-meter relay at the Sochi Games last month, was scheduled to speak Thursday at Kaneland High School’s auditorium.

His presentation, in conjunction with a group from Devry University, explored how science and technology correlated with Team USA. The event was part of Kaneland’s Smart Start Speakers Series.

Kaneland School Superintendent Jeff Schuler said assistant principal Mike Rice worked on coordinating the series.

Malone is a native of Denton, Texas, a Dallas suburb.

No kidding: Sons of Gretzky, Scioscia swapped

The Cubs on Thursday traded minor league outfielder Trevor Gretzky, a likely Kane County Cougar in 2014, to the Los Angeles Angels for first baseman Matt Scioscia.

Both products of the 2011 Major League Baseball FirstYear Player Draft have famous fathers – NHL legend Wayne Gretzky and Angels manager Mike Scioscia, a former allstar catcher.

Both also are still seeking to rev up their careers. Scioscia, a Notre Dame product and 45thround draft pick, is a .267 hitter in 454 minor league at-bats.

Gretzky, taken in the seventh round, enters the season with a .288 average but just seven extra-base hits in 250 at-bats.

The 6-foot-4 corner outfielder, who was promoted to the Cougars in August, played at 190 pounds last season. Gretz-

ky, 21, recently told Minor League Baseball’s website he had added 25 pounds of muscle this winter.

Should the Angels tab Gretzky for Class-A ball, he could return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark with the Burlington Bees from May 2 to 4. Gretzky’s celebrity parents – his mother is actress Janet Jones – were on hand for the final series Cougars’ of the

2013 season, including when Gretzky smacked his first professional home run against Peoria.

The Cougars recently announced 2014 bobblehead nights for both Vogelbach (June 24) and Almora (Aug. 12). The first 1,500 fans receive the giveaway. First pitch for both games is slated

for 6:30 p.m.

Johnson and Vogelbach finished the Dan season in Daytona, helping Vogelbach the club to a Florida State League title.

“They’ve got a lot of good facilities there. I saw their weight room [and] I was pretty jealous, and obviously their track is top-notch.”

The boys meet is set for today, with the girls to compete Saturday.

Kaneland’s boys and girls teams will travel to Sterling for the Northern Illinois Big 12 indoor meet Saturday.

“I think we just needed to settled in,” Vostal said. “Half of our team is new to the varsity, so were trying to gel people together.”

The Cougars came close to taking the lead on another Celarek shot with five min-

utes left in the half. North Stars goalkeeper Shelby Stitz batted the ball away, one of her seven saves of the night.

The North Stars took a brief lead in the second half on a penalty kick at the 32:16 mark.

Alyssa Brandt kicked the ball in just to the right of Conant goalkeeper Haley Anderson (five saves).

“I had to remind myself to remain calm that I had this,” Brandt said. “It’s placement over power.”

Conant’s Drew Wentzel tied the score back up seven minutes later on a free kick.

The senior booted the ball from the left corner 22 yards out over three North defenders and past Stitz into the right corner of the net.

The Cougars retook the lead on Celarek’s second goal of the night with 17 minutes left in the match. The junior knocked it in from the left corner.

“The girls were excited to get an opportunity to see how well we would compete against a team that we know is always one of the top ones out there,” Franco said.

PEORIA – Before Kaneland senior forward Ty Carlson stepped back to fire away in his bid for the IHSA Boys Class 3A Three-Point Showdown title, he took pause at something in the stands.

Along with his father, grandmother and two younger brothers, Carlson’s backers included Kaneland interim athletic director Ralph Drendel and the Knights baseball team, of which Carlson also is a member.

All were on hand for Thursday’s preliminary round at the Peoria Civic Center.

Although Carlson’s eight 3s fell short of the 10 he needed to reach a playoff for the top four spots in today’s finals, he still left for home feeling content.

“I had a pretty good showing,” Carlson said. “It was very cool for all of them to come out.”

Carlson also was named to the Associated Press Class 3A Honorable Mention All-State team Thursday after helping the Knights to a share of the Northern Illinois Big 12 East title with team-leading averages in points (16.3) and rebounds (7.3).

That recognition only added to the euphoria he felt on the floor that will host the Class 3A and 4A state finals this weekend. Carlson was awed at the opportunity to see top recruits Jahlil Okafor (Whitney Young) and Jalen Brunson (Stevenson) – opponents in a 4A semifinal today – up close.

Carlson’s younger brothers – Troyer, 8, and Trevor, 12 – served as his rebounders.

“I didn’t really want the season to end. I just kind of tried to keep it going as long as possible,” Carlson said.

“It was a really neat experience.”

Burlington Central junior Drew Wiss hit nine 3s in prelims and fell short of the finals cut.

In Class 4A competition, St. Charles North senior Alec Goetz’s seven treys weren’t enough to advance.

Navigato recognized: Geneva junior wing Nate Navigato on Thursday was named to the Associated Press Class 4A Honorable Mention All-State team.

HOFFMAN ESTATES – The Conant girls soccer team finally got some payback Thursday against St. Charles North.

The Cougars, who North eliminated in the 2013 postseason, edged the North Stars, 3-2, in North’s season opener.

“It’s always in the back of your mind,” Conant coach Jason Franco said of last season’s double overtime loss in the sectional semifinal. “Although this isn’t the game we were worried about, it’s good to get a win early.”

North coach Ruth Vostal was happy to finally being playing outside.

“Tonight was the first time we had 11 people on the field, the first time the team was outside, and the first time they had cleats on,” Vostal said. “I was pleased with some of the things we saw. I think it was great learning opportunity for the girls.”

Marmion teacher named Waubonsee featured alumnus KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – Vince Bellafiore, 62, of Batavia, first began attending classes at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove in 1970.

Since then, he has spent three decades-long careers, as a carpenter, Batavia police officer, and – for the last 15 years – a teacher at Marmion Academy in Aurora.

For his decades of service, pursuit of his goals and perseverance in the face of adversity – it took him 17 years to complete his first two-year degree

– Waubonsee Community College has recognized Bellafiore as its featured alumnus for the month of March, according to a Vince Bellafiore news release.

After taking a few classes at Waubonsee, Bellafiore left to pursue his first career.

“I had a chance to go out there and earn a living as a fulltime carpenter,” Bellafiore said in the release. “So, while I went

through a four-year apprenticeship, and then continued to learn as a journeyman, school was really kind of put on the back burner.”

After about a decade in carpentry, Bellafiore decided to start a new career in law enforcement, where he began as an auxiliary officer with the Batavia Police Department in the late 1970s. Bellafiore took the oath of a full-time Batavia Police Officer in 1981.

While with the department, Bellafiore returned to Waubonsee to take “classes here and there,” he said in the release.

Bellafiore’s dedication to the

police department paid off, spurring a promotion to the rank of sergeant.

The following year he graduated from Waubonsee with an associate degree.

An in-the-line-of-duty injury in 1998 forced him to retire from the department, which is when he began his career at Marmion, teaching classes to the young men who take part in the Roman Catholic military academy’s Leadership Education and Development, or LEAD, Program.

Bellafiore now serves as director of the LEAD program, which provides instruction in leadership ethics, skills and

strategies to the approximately 20 percent of the school’s cadets not enlisted in the Junior ROTC program. Students are required to either participate in ROTC or the LEAD program throughout their four years at the school.

The lessons imparted to him by his experiences in and out of the classroom have provided him with valuable insights to share with his students – lessons that are applicable to anyone, anywhere, at anytime, he said in the release.

“Learning is important in all aspects of what we do,” Bellafiore said in the release. “We’re all lifelong learners.”

8NEIGHBORS BRIEFS Garden Club honors Linda Radtke with Gratitude Award GENEVA – The annual Geneva Garden Club Gratitude Award was given to Linda Radtke last month at a general meeting.

The award is given to a member each year. A garden book is given to the recipient and a copy is donated to the Geneva Public Library in the honoree’s name.

Radtke has been a member of the garden club since 1994 and suggested the accolade on behalf of other past and present members years ago, according to a news release.

Radtke has demonstrated her commitment by volunteering and giving her vast talents and innumerable service hours to benefit the citizens of Geneva and garden club members alike, the release states.

By Gwenivere A. Killian, a Geneva resident I’m a mommie that looks like a mummy; But not one to view in a case.

I’m no artful treasure By anyone’s measure.

It’s just that I’ve this time-worn face.

The years all stretch way out behind me; Though not quite to any B.C. But I have reached the stage Where I sure show my age; And this relic before you is me.

I once was young, shapely, and graceful; Some even considered me pretty.

But that vibrant day

Is long faded away.

Now I’m frumpy and dull; more’s the pity!

My grandchildren – it’s true – love me dearly And tell me to them I look good.

But they’re either love-blind Or just being kind; And they say what they think that they should.

I don’t really feel old as I putz through my days; ’Til I happen to see my reflection.

CHARLES – St. Charles resident Rosemary Leppert won a Classic Cinemas yearlong movie pass and two VIP admissions and special event passes to Brookfield Zoo from Charlestowne 18 in St. Charles, for winning the theater’s Predict the Oscars Contest.

Leppert was one of 7,608 participants to cast a ballot during the six-week contest.

To win, customers needed to predict all seven categories correctly: best picture, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress and best animated film.

“I visit the Charlestowne 18 theater almost every Friday for the past five years, and my family always asks me for my critique of the movies,” said Leppert in a news release. “I’m their personal movie critic, and my children and grandchildren will often call me on Saturdays to check in about what I saw the day before.”

Leppert has entered the Predict the Oscars Contest before, but has never won.

Massive prairie grassland clinging to a mother prairie’s skirt as pioneers tore at the fabric – thinking to increase the prairies worth.

O how the prairie grasses clung to their beloved mother earth.

And the prairie grasses whisper, whisper, whisper of the torment of destruction as their remains were swept away – considered an obstruction.

Listening ... they heard extinction planned in the shout of pioneers, saying, “We have cleared this useless land.”

And the prairie grasses know in their unmarked row on row and they whisper, whisper, whisper “They shall reap just what they sow: They shall reap just what they sow.”

And the prairie grasses whisper, whisper, whisper from the granite of the rock, “O mankind, take stock, take stock.”

Nissan Altima sedan: In praise of the ordinary

By WARREN BROWN Special to The Washington Post Ordinary well done deserves attention. It, at least, merits thanks. In that spirit, accept this column as gratitude for the 2014 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL sedan.

But let’s first get some things out of the way. The Nissan Altima is no speedster, not even with its optional 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine (270 horsepower, 251 pound-feet of torque). It certainly won’t excite speed demons in standard form – 2.5-liter, in-line, four-cylinder gasoline engine (182 horsepower, 180 pound-feet of torque).

With either engine, it will get you to where you have to go safely, reliably, comfortably and with more than a modicum of style. It is a wonderfully ordinary car for ordinary people, which is offensive only if you find something wrong with being ordinary. I don’t.

I like ordinary. I believe that ordinary rules, even in the automobile industry. In fact, it is reasonable to argue that if ordinary did not exist, exceptional would be kaput, too. Think about it.

Most exotic car companies exist today only because they are owned by manufacturers that earn most of their money making and selling ordinary cars and trucks.

Bugatti and Lamborghini, for example, owe their continued existence to Volkswagen. Jaguar and Land Rover, former wards of Ford Motor Co., now derive sustenance from India’s Tata, maker of many ordinary vehicles, among other things. And Cadillac, now grown ridiculously haughty, as evidenced by its supremely arrogant “Poolside” TV advertisement (paraphrased: You deserve to be wealthy and have all of the stuff that wealth can buy because you are among the few who work hard and never take a vacation).

Well, Cadillac would not exist were it not for all the two-week-off wage grunts buying Chevrolets.

Ordinary is crucial to the proper functioning of everything. It must be sustained. It must be respected. Nissan understands that. The front-wheel-drive Altima family sedan is proof.

With a base price of $22,110, considered “affordable” in an automobile industry where the average out-the-door price of a new vehicle hovers around $31,000, it offers a lot – a top federal

With options, such as a Bose premium sound system, you get a total car package in the Nissan Altima that puts some prestigious car badges to shame.

Of course, you can always spend more, and Nissan is not above taking your money. If you are bored with the

2.5 Altima class, reflective of the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, you can ask for the slightly more costly and powerful 3.5 V-6 Altima with its own base, S, and SL trim levels. Ordinary does not have to be lackluster. Nissan apparently understands that, too.

Ordinary evolves. At each stage of its evolution, it demands respect.

Disrespect it, and you wind up filing for bankruptcy and begging the federal government for a taxpayer bailout. Ask General Motors – the same car company that now has the temerity to insult us with its ... you-deserve-to-be-rich-because-you-worked-harder-than-anyoneelse commercial.

Ordinary nowadays includes technological savvy fostered by ongoing technological progress. I’ve visited

countries where certifiably poor people who have never had land-line telephone service now think nothing of reaching for a cellphone. Walk onto the campus of any state college in America, choose an observation post, and watch myriad students from myriad backgrounds tweeting, clicking and browsing. They expect to have access to similar technology in their automobiles. Nissan gives it to them at a reasonable price in the Altima.

The company realizes the evolution of ordinary has resulted in the elevation of the same, which is why Nissan is taking so many other risks, for example, with all-electric cars such as the Leaf.

Nissan is betting that its future lies with ordinary. Accordingly, I’m betting on Nissan.

Jeep Compass boasts practicality among virtues Practicality is one of several virtues that stand out in the 2014 Jeep Compass .

Storage, seat adjustments, even door handles are hallmarks of this practical nature.

The rear door handles, for example, are not positioned in their normal belt-line horizontal position, but at an upper vertical location. Surprisingly, unless one is abnormally short to reach them, these handles open the rear doors more sensibly.

Seatbacks in the rear bench seating area adjust forward and backward to conform to one’s comfort preference. In the front, seats move manually or are powered but with one difference from the norm of sport utility vehicles in this midsized class. The difference is that the front passenger seat not only moves forward and backward but can fold flat. If carrying an unusually long piece of cargo, this feature can be handy.

The ultimate cargo capability is reached at 53.6 cubic feet after the split rear seats are folded flat. When upright, the carpeted and lighted storage area measures 22.7 cubic feet.

There are other practical features worth mentioning, including four grab handles to make entry a bit more feasible, as this vehicle has a ground clearance of eight inches. It can be a stretch to get into the Compass.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper the glove box comes in handy to hold papers and other smaller items. This open bin is in lieu of an enclosed upper glove box found on SUV competitors.

And a spare tire is stored under the carpeted and lighted rear storage floor. In an era when an increasing number of vehicles have no spare (runflat tires with an air inflation kit), this is reassuring. Yes, the spare is a temporary but that is better than an air inflation kit.

A 2.4-liter, 170-horsepower inline dual overhead cam four-cylinder Compass with four-wheel-drive was tested recently. Since the engine was mated to a shiftable six-speed automatic transmission (the continuously variable transmission has been dropped), there was no lack of solid energy when tested in deep and wet snow. This midsize SUV is a mild off-roader but, with its raised suspension, it can navigate through or across some relatively rugged terrain.

But do not overdo it. There is no off-road transfer case for torque purposes. Tow hooks, front and rear, were absent as well. The relatively wide P215 Firestone tires mounted on five dual-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels offer more surface grip than narrower tires on smaller

SUVs. The four-cylinder averaged 23 miles per gallon in usage of unleaded gasoline during the test week. The 23 mpg matched the figure the Environmental Protection Agency has stipulated for this four-wheel-drive Limited model of the Compass.

For 2014, Compass models are Sport ($18,595), Latitude ($22,295) and Limited ($25,895 in front-wheel-drive mode).

The 4WD’s asking price was $27,795. The EPA also rated the 3,345-pound Limited as averaging 21 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway.

Towing capacity is 2,000 pounds and the tested five-passenger, four-door Compass Limited safely can carry a payload of 925 pounds. This could translate into carrying, say, five 180-pounders. Overhead is a set of roof rails but no crossbars.

The tested Compass was a top-of-the-line Limited model. Tan leather covered both seating rows, as well as door panel inserts with elbow rests.

Niceties included remote keyless entry, air conditioning, power windows-door locks-exterior mirrors, cruise control, a 115-volt auxiliary power outlet paired with a 12-volt outlet, hill start assist (will not roll backward or forward if stopped on an incline), tinted glass, liftgate with fixed window, and fog lamps in front paired with halogen headlamps.

The ride was pliant, quiet and high, and the suspension system (struts front, multilinks rear) is average, which means it does well on maintained roadways but not

as well on rough ones. This could be said of most vehicles, though, except for those with electronics that have gas shock absorbers react to road conditions in nanoseconds.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles and five years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain as well as for 24hour roadside assistance.

The Liberty was Jeep’s smallest SUV from 2002 through 2012 when production ceased. In 2007, Compass and Patriot came along to qualify as the company’s smallest SUVs. For information, visit www.

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Jake Gyllenhaal and Canadian director Denis Villeneuve did some pretty good work together last fall with “Prisoners,” a violent thriller that possessed more style than substance.

The same can be said for “Enemy,” a more enigmatic, less genre-driven exercise that they reportedly filmed before “Prisoners,” but that suffers from similar mannerisms and emptiness.

Gyllenhaal plays Adam, a withdrawn, socially awkward college professor who, when he ventures into the world’s last video store one night, discovers upon renting a movie that there’s a bit-playing actor out there who is his exact physical double.

As Adam pursues his own personal existential mystery story, “Enemy,” which is adapted from the Jose Saramago novel “The Double,” plays around with notions that have capti-

vated artists from Nabokov to David Lynch, with similar waking-dream dread, if not their heft and depth.

Toronto plays itself – for once – and serves as the setting for the psycho-erotic cat-and-mouse game that has been filmed in jaundiced shades of yellowing beige; the wan, lifeless palette matches the film’s overarching tone of drained, depressive enervation.

Gyllenhaal ably engages in that most time-honored of actorly exercises, playing his own doppelganger, and he manages to pay homage to not just one but two Martin Scorsese movies in a clever mirror scene.

Still, when he’s lecturing students on chaos theory and dictatorship and repeating historic patterns, he looks less like a man inhabiting a difficult, recessive character than someone hitting his mark and reading his lines.

For all the skill with which Villeneuve creates a forbidding, soupy-colored dystopia (whether in Adam’s imagination or downtown Toronto),

“Enemy” feels like something we’ve seen before – not just from Lynch but David Cronenberg, Stanley Kubrick and any number of contemporary masters of the subconscious at its most fetishistic and unnerving. (To make the Lynchian comparison that much easier, Isabella Rossellini makes a cameo appearance as Adam’s mother.)

There’s no doubt that Villeneuve can make a movie; he’s developed a strong cinematic voice. It’s tantalizing to imagine what he could do with a really fine story.

“Enemy” may best be filed under an exercise rather than fully realized effort, especially in light of a final shot that, for all its what-the-huh?! controversy, feels flimsy and unsupported by what’s gone before it.

• “Enemy” received two out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains some strong sexual content, graphic nudity and profanity. It runs 90 minutes.

New blood pressure guidelines come with controversy Dear Doctor K: I’m 68 years old and I take blood-pressure lowering medication. What do the new blood pressure guidelines mean for people of my age?

Dear Reader: You’re asking about new guidelines for managing high blood pressure, or hypertension, in adults. They were published recently by an expert panel of specialists in high blood pressure.

You may have noticed that experts (on any subject) don’t always agree with each other.

And sometimes they really don’t agree with each other. That’s the case with these guidelines. They are controversial, and I’ll explain why.

But first, some basics. Blood pressure is the force the blood exerts on your arteries when it is pumped out of the heart. Blood pressure is written as two numbers, recorded in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).

Systolic pressure (the top number of a blood pressure reading) is the pressure during the heart’s pumping phase. Diastolic pressure (the bottom number) is the pressure during the resting phase, between heartbeats. I’ve put an illustration of how blood pressure is measured on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

The current categories of blood

Komaroff pressure are: • Normal: less than 120/80 mm Hg • Prehypertension: 120-139/8089 mm Hg • Hypertension: greater than 140/90 mm Hg Why do we worry about high blood pressure? If you have it, and don’t have it treated, high blood pressure increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, aneurysms of the body’s main artery (the aorta) and of arteries in the brain, eye damage, problems with thinking and memory loss.

There’s no doubt that treating high blood pressure above a certain level reduces your risk of all these bad things. Like you, and millions of others, I have high blood pressure. I absolutely want it treated, and I don’t forget to take my pills.

Like the old guidelines, the new guidelines recommend that adults ages 30 to 59 should get treatment if their blood pressure is above 140/90 mm Hg. However, the new guidelines do give adults ages 60 and older

a bit more leeway. Treatment is not automatically recommended in this age group for people with blood pressures of 140-149/90, unless they have diabetes or kidney disease.

Why not? The experts who published the new guidelines argue that in such people the benefits of treatment are not as clearly proven, and side effects from blood pressure medicines are more common. Other experts disagree.

While I’m not a blood pressure expert, based on what I know, I treat blood pressure in people 60 and older when it is over 140/90.

The guidelines recommend that everyone with hypertension and prehypertension adopt lifestyle changes known to control blood pressure. These include: • Losing weight if needed • Limiting salt intake • Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains • Staying physically active.

Even though there is some controversy about when to treat high blood pressure in people 60 and older, there’s no controversy about the value of treatment.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and a very good student because I stay on top of my studies and make my homework a priority, yet I’m also active in school activities. I’m president of the pep club, secretary of the senior class, vice president of the art club and an active member of Young Democrats for a Better America group.

I’m also a member of the girls’ soccer team, so you can see that I’m a very busy student.

I have a married sister and a brother who is in his second year at Princeton University. I also have a baby sister who is just 10 months old. I love Ashley passionately. She is just starting to walk, and she is the cutest little bundle of joy in all of Massachusetts!

My mom is what you would call a “socialite,” and she belongs to several clubs that promote a clean environment or help finding shelter for the homeless. These are all worthy causes and Mom gets a lot of satisfaction from her participation. She also belongs to a bridge club, and she plays every Wednesday evening.

With all of my activities, I sometimes get home late after school, and sometimes I also have club meetings that are held at a student’s home. Ever since Ashley was born, I have been designated as the No. 1 babysitter when mom has her meetings. I don’t mind except when there is a conflict with my school activities. If that happens, I always lose because my mom says she can’t trust leaving Ashley with a stranger.

My dad is hardly ever home, so he is no help.

I know my mom reads your column because she comments on it several times a week, usually at breakfast, and

I understand her predicament. You’re a loving, responsible young lady and that makes you the best person to care for Ashley in Mom’s absence. Nevertheless, it’s hardly fair for you to have to short-change your highschool career so that your mother has the leisure to play bridge or even to engage in community projects.

Since she chooses to spend so many evenings away from home, it’s time for her to find a reliable babysitter or two to step in when you, also, are busy. Whenever possible, of course, you should care for Ashley.

But when doing so interferes with school activities, Mom should employ a sitter.

However, another of those words is relevant to today’s North hand: pointless. And sometimes you have to bid with a true Yarborough. South opens two clubs, strong, artificial and forcing. North responds two diamonds, weak, artificial and forcing. South rebids two spades, natural and forcing.

What should North do now?

Usually, with a very bad hand, responder gives a second negative: either two no-trump (traditional) or three clubs (modern), according to partnership preference. Here, though, with four-card support for opener’s major, responder should jump to four of that major. This indicates at least four trumps but no first- or second-round control: no ace, void, king or singleton.

Against four spades, West leads the heart queen. How should South plan the play?

Declarer has two heart losers, so can afford only one trump loser, not two. There is just one layout that will save South: either opponent must have a singleton queen. Declarer should take the first trick and lead his spade king. And because this deal is seeing the light of day, you just know that will work.

Finally, South might have rebid three no-trump, which North would have passed because he could not be sure of an eight-card major-suit fit. (This is a bad sequence for Standard.)

Then, if West had led a club, South would have had to make the same spade play.
