T

he last minute of any post-season sporting event is always a little nerve wracking for me. I’m trying to watch the clock, the players, the fans and the actual game all at once.

Tuesday night during the Class

4A NIU Supersectional between Geneva and Lake Park boys basketball, that minute happened three times – the Vikings won after battling through two, four-minute overtime periods.

Immediately, I’m on my feet and rushing to where the action

is, trying my best not to get trampled or sucked into the crowd of ecstatic players and fans.

When it came time for the players to share their supersectional plaque with the Blue Crue student section, I decided

it was best to hover along the outside of the swarm of people and hold my camera over my head and hope my photo was in focus.

Elgin Community College prepares to go smoke-free by March 30 ELGIN – Elgin Community College students will return to a slightly different campus after spring break.

It will be smoke-free as of March 30.

Toya Webb, a communications specialist for the college, said the change shouldn’t be a surprise to students and staff. Emails have been sent, informational sessions have been held and signs have been posted about the soon-to-be smoke-free campus, she said.

“We made sure that everyone knows about this,” Webb said.

ECC is becoming a smokefree campus to comply with the Illinois Smoke-Free Campus Act, which prohibits smoking on the property of state-supported institutions of higher learning. Former Gov. Pat Quinn signed the law in August 2014. It takes effect July 1 and applies to indoor and outdoor spaces on campuses.

“Illinois’ college students shouldn’t be subject to unwanted cigarette smoke on the campuses they call home,”

Quinn said in a statement.

“We want all schools to be healthy, clean and productive places of learning for Illinois’ bright young minds. This new law will improve the health of our students and encourage healthier lifestyles after college graduation.”

Sugar Grove-based Waubonsee Community College already was smoke-free at the time of the bill’s passage, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

ECC will prohibit smoking on all its campuses with the exception of the A, H and

J parking lots on the Spartan Drive campus in Elgin.

Currently, smokers can smoke at an open space on the south side of campus by the lake, said Ryan Callahan, superintendent of grounds.

When deciding how to comply with the new law, Callahan said, college officials wanted to provide designated smoking areas on the east and west sides of campus, as well as one to accommodate staff.

Smokers may smoke only in their own parked vehicle or in another parked vehicle with the owner’s permission.

THE POWER OF SPEECH Batavia resident Heronemus working to make city more handicapped accessible

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Lou Gehrig’s disease has robbed Batavia resident Steve Heronemus of his ability to walk and speak, but he does not see himself as a victim.

“I spend much time supporting and encouraging people to live with the disease rather than feeling like they are dying of it,” the 55-yearold said through a speech-generating device. “I see myself as an advocate working on the behalf of others.”

He has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a progressive, degenerative disease of the nervous system. He has had the disease since 2003, said his wife, Suzanne.

The disease has left Steve Heronemus confined to a wheelchair.

There is no cure or treatment that halts or reverses ALS, according to the nonprofit ALS Association. About 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year, according to the association.

Because the disease has taken his ability to talk, he speaks through a speech-generating device, similar to one used by physicist and scientist Stephen Hawking, who also has ALS. The device is controlled through his eye movement, since Steve Heronemus no longer can use a mouse.

He is grateful for the technology.

“After not being able to speak for nearly a year, this technology made me feel like I walked out of a cave,” he said.

“I could fully participate in family and community life.”

His wife also is thankful for the opportunities the technology provides him.

“We don’t have a cure. But until we have a cure, we have technology, and technology has to kind of be our cure for now,” Suzanne Heronemus

There is a meaning behind

the name of his book. A portion of the proceeds from sales will benefit the Les Turner ALS Foundation.

“You can sometimes speak of someone with ALS as being

locked in a shell,” he said.

“I’ve turned this around and use sea shells as metaphors for ways to have purpose and meaning in life, and opening up to experience grace.”

Being confined to a wheelchair, Steve Heronemus has encountered obstacles in trying to get around the city. Steve and Suzanne Heronemus are working to make the city more handicapped accessible.

The couple recently presented concerns to Batavia aldermen at a Batavia City Council meeting.

“Part of what we need to do is just create people’s awareness,” Suzanne Heronemus said. “Have your eyes open.

Watch for wheelchairs in the parking lot, or crossing the road. Don’t race to turn in front of them.”

She said they plan to talk to Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath about steps that could be taken to make the city more handicapped accessible, such as repairing sidewalks and making sure sidewalks are connected.

The couple also might put on a community event, such as a wheelchair obstacle course, so people better understand the obstacles those with disabilities face, Suzanne Heronemus said.

Even though technology has given Steve Heronemus the power to speak and write, it hasn’t restored everything.

For instance, he is no longer able to play the piano or the French horn.

“For me, the biggest challenge or loss has been the inability to hold and hug my wife and children, and the inability to play my musical instruments,” he said.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A series of harassing phone calls from men claiming to be with a national sweepstakes has a Sugar Grove Township woman fearing for her safety, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

The woman described the callers as two men with accents who repeatedly called her home telephone line, demanding she produce $400 to claim a prize and shipment coming to her residence, po-

lice reported.

She has gotten the calls at all hours and has answered as many as eight in one day, police reported, noting she counted that many calls Monday.

The woman has not sent the men money or a money order, police reported. She is, however, “nervous and alarmed” that they will come to her residence and harm her, according to the report.

The men on Monday reportedly told her they would kill her if she didn’t give them the money.

The report indicated the

callers know the woman’s address, including her apartment number.

The sheriff’s office helped the woman get caller ID to get the callers’ number in order to take the next step to block the calls, police reported.

Publishers Clearing House offers several tips and warning signs on its website, info.pch.com, to help citizens learn the difference between a legitimate sweep-

stakes offer and a scam.

The organization warns people to be suspicious of callers claiming they’ve won but ask them to send money.

“If you receive a telephone call from someone claiming you have won a sweepstakes prize but are asked to send money to claim it – STOP – you have not heard from a legitimate sweepstakes company,” the website states. “At Publishers Clearing House, we do

not notify our contest winners by phone.”

Scams can be reported to Publishers Clearing House at 800-392-4190. Those who received a suspicious email using the organization’s name and logo may forward it to its fraud reporting mailbox, abuse@pch.com.

The community is invited to hear Olson’s message of triumph over adversity. Olson lost his left eye to retinoblastoma before age 1 and, in November 2009, lost his right eye. At 8, Olson wrote a book to uplift

and encourage other children battling cancer and other diseases. His second book, “Open Your Eyes,” was released in 2014.

Olson has established a foundation, Out-of-Sight Faith, to raise funds to buy technology for other blind children and support cancer research.

BATAVIA – Accessibility has become an issue in the race for Batavia 1st Ward alderman.

First Ward Alderman Carl Fischer is facing a challenge from Carl Dinwiddie. In October, Fischer was appointed to fill an empty seat on the Batavia City Council following the resignation of 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks. Dinwiddie also Carl Fischer applied for the post.

Dinwiddie said he would be more accessible than Fischer, who has not attended sever- Carl Dinwiddie al city meetings since being appointed.

In most of the cases, Fischer has joined the meetings via phone.

“You miss the response from whoever is in the audience,” Dinwiddie said.

As long as I stay connected to the council, and more importantly, connected to the citizens, then I don’t see that there is any issue.”

The Prairie State project also is an issue in the election. Batavia aldermen last year approved a resolution that calls for Attorney General Lisa Madigan to “conduct an investigation and audit of the Prairie State

Project agreements and communities to determine whether the city of Batavia was given full and accurate information about the Prairie State Project before the time it entered into the agreements and whether any affirmative, material misrepresentations or material omissions were made in the presentation of information to the city of Batavia with respect to the Prairie State Project.”

“Pretty much that was the top issue of everybody I talked to,” Dinwiddie said.

“They’re worried about our electric rates now and also in the future since the market rates are going down and

our rates are whatever Prairie State wants to charge us.”

Fischer said residents have brought a number of issues to him, including the need for more parking in downtown Batavia along with another bridge.

He also said people want to see more restaurants like Gaetano’s in downtown Batavia. Gaetano’s Batavia is an Italian fusion restaurant that opened last year in the former space of The Rhino Room.

“They want to see fewer brewpubs and maybe some more sit-down, family-oriented restaurants,” Fischer said.

Institute of Technology. Dennis had a very successful career in the Railroad Industry. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad, and was a Senior Vice President for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Dennis helped to privatize the Railroads in Brazil, and concluded his career as a Senior Vice President for the Canadian National Railroad. Dennis had an interest in reading, puzzles, Sudoku, and helping young people find their path thru college.

He was proud to have served in the ROTC. He loved to travel seeing every state except Alaska.

His world travels took him to many countries in Europe, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada. He was a member of the American Society of Engineers. The motto Dennis lived by was “Always do right and your best.”

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Barbara (nee Deitch); and a large extended family of brother and sister in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

12 Prairie State project an issue in election

MAPLE PARK – Voters in Kaneland School District 302 should note that the order of candidates on the ballot for the April 7 election will be different than what was listed in printed sample ballots.

The sample ballot, which had been distributed in Kane County, listed the candidates in an order that had been determined by a draw, said Suzanne Fahnestock, the Kane County chief deputy clerk of elections.

But, she said, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office later provided a recommendation that the candidates should be grouped by town-

ship. The new order reflects that. She said the Kaneland race was the only one that had to be changed on the ballot.

Eight candidates are vying for four available seats in the Kaneland race.

The first three names on the ballot – Tony Valente, Dan Nagel and Jerry Elliott, all Sugar Grove Township residents – will remain the same.

The other candidates from Sugar Grove Township are Peter Lopatin and Teresa Witt, and they both were moved up to the fourth and fifth spots.

They were followed by Campton Township resident Ryan Kerry, Blackberry Township resident Gale Pavlak and Pierce Township resident Pamela Voorhees.

The township of residence matters in the Kaneland race.

According to state law, in a district such as Kaneland, where most live in cities but most of the geography is rural,

members of the board must be divided among the townships that the district covers. The board may have no more than three residents from any one township.

So while there are five candidates on the ballot from Sugar Grove Township, no more than three could win a seat on

the board in the election.

Fahnestock mentioned this was the first time school board candidates filed at the county clerk’s office. She stressed that all of the other information remained accurate and correct, and that nothing changed except the order in which candidates were listed.

Challenges facing Illinois education are tremendous This year marks an important anniversary for our nation of 150 years since the end of the Civil War and the untimely death of Abraham Lincoln, the president who led us through that historic period. Regional superintendents of schools also look to 1865 as the start of a long legacy of serving Illinois schools, a job that is as important today as it was in Lincoln’s time.

The office of county superintendent of schools was created by the Legislature in 1865 to serve four-year terms, and every officeholder was required to visit each county school every year. From the outset, these offices have served as the administrative backbone for our school system.

Over the decades, our makeup, roles and duties have changed dramatically. At the outset, county superintendents

served as official advisers and assistants for school districts and as agents of the state superintendent of schools. We were there in the 1950s for the difficult decisions around massive consolidations of school districts. From the 1970s to the mid-1990s, county superintendent numbers reduced from 102 to 45 regional superintendents in charge of Regional Offices of Education – or ROEs – around the state.

Today, we are going through more change. By July 1, there will be 35 ROEs instead of 44, yet our work demands will not decrease.

We will do more with less, and we will provide schools with the high-quality service they have come to expect through our commitment to three tenets: safety, support and success. We keep schoolchildren safe by training

We support educators through top-notch professional development and by ensuring schools are meeting state and federal guidelines. We help so many students succeed through our high school equivalency degree and Regional Safe School programs. We are doing this while taking the lead in reducing costs and promoting a shared service model for school districts.

The challenges facing Illinois education are tremendous. While regional superintendents of schools appreciate Gov. Bruce Rauner’s plans to provide more state aid to

schools, he has proposed cutting several programs that are vital to schools’ and students’ success. The safe schools program that we oversee is a great example.

The Regional Safe School Program was created to provide a safety net of alternative education for students removed from classes for disruptions. So many students use their new opportunity to improve behavior, attend class more regularly, complete their coursework and either return to their home school to graduate or receive their GED here.

The counseling and life-skills training they receive in the safe schools turn around their lives for the better.

Where will these students go without a safe school alternative? What will administrators and teachers do when behavior problems disrupt

classes and create dangerous situations? We need to work with the governor and legislators this spring to keep safe schools in place for all students to succeed.

As we join with other school administration organizations to support the Vision 20/20 push for a brighter future for Illinois schools from the inside, regional superintendents of schools are an important part of the solution for the problems that must be addressed now. At 150, we are energized and prepared for the work ahead.

The Fed and rates BLOOMBERG NEWS The Federal Reserve’s policymaking committee is no longer saying it will be “patient” about returning to a more normal monetary policy.

Does this mean the U.S. has moved a step closer to its first increase in interest rates since the recession? It shouldn’t – and Chair Janet Yellen said it doesn’t.

Vocabulary aside, the Fed’s main message and the uncertainties surrounding it haven’t really changed. It wants to start lifting interest rates early enough to keep inflation from rising above its 2 percent target, but not so early that it brakes the recovery prematurely. That sounds simple, but it’s a tough call because the economy is still behaving strangely.

What’s a central bank to do?

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

First, say more clearly than it has up to now that economic indicators, rather than the calendar, will guide its decisions.

In getting away from saying it will be “patient” about raising rates – which investors have seen as guidance about timing – the Fed has taken a step in this direction.

Second, and more controversially, the Fed should be willing to err on the side of a bit too much inflation. Leaning against the recovery before wage pressures are plainly in sight would guard against an inflation overshoot, which is good – but if that means missing out on income and jobs, then the price is too high. Since the recession, the Fed has tolerated an inflation undershoot. Now it should be equally willing, if need be, to let inflation move briefly above the 2 percent ceiling.

Beating Simeon tough act to follow for Geneva’s foe

fter taking down Simeon on Tuesday, there isn’t an opponent in the state that could intimidate the Normal boys basketball team.

Yet Geneva – which will oppose the Ironmen in tonight’s IHSA Class 4A state semifinal – carries a level of cachet not even Simeon can match in that the Vikings vanquished Rockford Auburn, the lone team to beat Normal this season.

“By beating Rockford Auburn, Geneva has our instant respect, because we know how hard Rockford Auburn is to play against and how crazy those games can be,” Normal coach Dave Witzig said.

Normal limited Simeon to 50 points in its 64-50 takedown of the Wolverines at rollicking Redbird Arena on Tuesday as nationally respected Simeon scuffled offensively, especially from the perimeter.

“Our defense has been great all year,” Witzig said.

“We have two 6-7 guys that do a good job of defending the paint, and our guards do a good job of getting out on shooters. Our defense is something we hang our hat on and try to focus on the most.”

One of those Normal big guys, Tyler Seibring, had 17 points and 13 rebounds against Simeon, and the Elon-bound senior gives the Ironmen a Division I recruit to counter Buffalo-bound Geneva standout Nate Navigato.

Seibring (14.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and fellow 6-7 senior Alex Peacock (14.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg) are the Ironmen’s top scoring threats, with Seibring much more capable of also inflicting damage from 3-point land.

Phil Ralston pauses for a few beats when asked when he began whistling to get players’ attention.

In that time, an onlooker might manage warbling the first few bars of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” – one of the Geneva boys basketball coach’s favorite tunes – or perhaps take a moment to cover his or her ears.

Ralston’s oft-imitated calling card may not test the acoustics of the cavernous Peoria Civic Center during today’s Class 4A state semifinal against Normal, but it sure pierces through the ruckus of packed prep gyms.

“I always tell the guys there aren’t many people that can get it to the same pitch that I can,” Ralston said, “so they’re able to differentiate.”

Ralston is wearing a lanyard displaying his Geneva High School identification card as he addresses his longstanding bench and practice habit, a subject about which he smiles and occasionally laughs after asserting that “it’s a slow news day.”

Not hardly, coach, with Geneva making its first state tournament trip in 52 seasons.

But anyhow, back to that lanyard.

Ralston understands wearing such adornments is school protocol, but if given his druthers, he would just as soon whistle “Taps” while discarding the accessory.

In short, that’s how this whole business of inserting his thumb and another interchangeable finger (usually the middle one) into his mouth and blowing came about. In his final high school playing season, as a junior at Glenbrook North, Ralston had unfavor-

“I don’t like wearing stuff around my neck. I don’t like wearing it. I’m not about the bling or the flair,” Ralston said.

“And so, for me, I knew how to whistle, usually was pretty good at it, and I figured, ‘Well, if I need to get their attention and want them to stop, I go to the whistle.’ ” WHEEEET! Mission accomplished.

“As soon as we hear it, you know who it is and everything,” Vikings junior post Loudon Vollbrecht said. “You just turn right to him. And I think it gives him a lot of control on the court for us. It’s definitely distinctive.”

Ralston is up front that “it’s not like I trademarked” the finger whistle, which he

estimates started well before he arrived at Geneva for the 200809 season, and also before his previous head coaching stop, at Grant.

In DeKalb, the noted birthplace of something nearly as blunt, barbed wire, the technique served Ralston especially well on different sides of town.

Both of Geneva’s sectional victories game before overflow crowds in DeKalb High School’s gym, with a frenzied championship game squeaker against Auburn requiring incredible focus from the Vikings down the stretch.

“We just shut down all our communication,” Geneva assistant coach Rob Wicinski said. “It was probably a good thing. All you could hear was his whistle.”

Northern Illinois Supersectional, a double-overtime thriller against Lake Park that saw his whistling sounds dart to every corner of the bigger Convocation Center court.

“I think it’s served me well, you know,” Ralston said. “You get into a loud environment, I think it can cut through some things.”

Elsewhere at Geneva: Geneva’s “24-Hour Run” boys and girls track fundraiser relay, held March 13 and 14, produced successful results. “Things went good with the relay,” Vikings girls coach Peter Raak said. “Now we’ve just got to collect the pledges and see how that goes. It was a good event last weekend for us.” ... In the 2000s, he sporadically strolled around Fifth Third Bank Ballpark (nee Elfstrom Stadium) as a player agent representing such former Cougars as then-Oakland A’s farmhand Jared Lansford.

Expect to see Stewart in Geneva in his latest role this season. Named Arizona Diamondbacks general manager in September – just days before the Cougars and D’backs agreed to a two-year, Class-A player development contract – Stewart’s duties will include

surveying minor league operations once the major league season settles in.

“He’ll definitely get there,” D’backs president and CEO Derrick Hall said. “Just depends on the general manager’s preferBob Froehlich ence and how their calendar works.”

Stewart, 58, sold his Sports Management Partners operation as a condition to join Arizona.

Since his 16-year playing career ended in 1995, he also has worked in three major league front offices and served as a coach.

Normal won 23 games last season “We know they’ve got some really good pieces, they’ve got a pretty decent amount of size,” Vollbrecht said. “I think it’ll be a good matchup for us, especially physicality-wise. It’ll be the team that comes out with the right mentality, then … whoever is ready to knock down some shots [down the stretch].”

Witzig said the Ironmen aren’t flashy offensively but generally move the ball well and

make sound decisions, noting a variety of opponents who play high-caliber, pressure defense forced the Ironmen into good habits.

“We try not to dribble too much because it can get stolen by the pressure we go against,” Witzig said. “So we try to move the ball, get the ball to shooters and look to go inside first, and go from there.”

All eight players in Normal’s typical rotation are seniors as the Ironmen improved upon a 23win season last year that ended

with a sectional setback against Edwardsville. Like Geneva, Normal’s roster is loaded with multisport athletes who thrived in the fall and brought a winning mentality to basketball season.

“It’s just been one of those years where the senior class has been winning whatever [sport] they’re doing,” Witzig said. “So those six [multisport athletes] really bring a lot of big-game experience to our team.”

Davis’ no-no propels Knights

By JOHN BUTKUS editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland softball team opened its season in a big way Thursday, shutting out Burlington Central in an 11-0 run-rule victory in five innings.

The Knights fed off the success of junior starting pitcher Courtney Davis, who went five hitless innings.

Davis was dominant, as she struck out five batters with only two walks. Davis said she was pleased at how her team played on opening day.

“I’m really happy,” Davis said. “I think the team played really good offensively and defensively, and it’s a good way to start the season.”

Davis opened the first inning by retiring the side, and her teammates began their

scoring by adding two runs on two hits. The Knights’ offense found a lot of success all game, scoring in all five innings, and sealed the game after scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on four hits.

Those runs were produced from a double, single, walk and a single in consecutive atbats.

Kaneland coach Peter Goff was pleased by the way his team was focused against the regional rival Rockets.

“Really happy with the girls. They came out and performed, and they were really locked in,” Goff said. “Every single day they come to school, they get their stuff done in the classroom and practice really hard. [The coaches] and I have never had to say something to them and they really focus on their own. Really happy with their effort today.”

We were sitting in the beer distributor’s box, right behind home plate. At some point, I was distracted by a flash of light. My first thought was that the sun had moved to a point where something in the upper deck was causing the reflection.

Curiously, the bright flash of light seemed to be directed right near to me.

As I turned to my immediate left, I saw a huge diamond ring on the finger of the gentleman seated next to me. It was catching the light and in the standard way we talk about diamonds – it was sparkling, big time.

The key club won second place in the single service category for its “Mr. BHS” project, second place for the Robert Hall achievement award and first place for a $7,000 donation to Spastic Paralysis Research.

Assuming that your family members are in good health, your preoccupation with the idea they might suddenly die should be discussed with a licensed psychotherapist. Ideally, you should tell your parents what’s going on, but if you’re afraid to talk to them and ask for help, then speak to a counselor at school so the counselor can bring it to their attention.

Good hygiene defends against hand, foot and mouth disease Dear Doctor K: Two children in my daughter’s day care have hand, foot and mouth disease.

How can I make sure my daughter doesn’t catch it?

Dear Reader: Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common illness caused by the Coxsackie virus. The disease most often affects infants and children younger than 5 years.

The illness usually starts with a fever. The child acts listless.

A day or two later, sores appear around or inside the mouth and throat. If the child is old enough to talk, he or she is likely to complain of mouth or throat pain.

Because of the sores in the mouth and throat, the child also may refuse to eat because it hurts.

Little red dots may appear on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and buttocks. The fever, sores and rash on the palms and soles can last several days.

A child with hand, foot and mouth disease is most contagious during the first week of illness.

Coxsackie virus spreads very easily by touching and other close contact. It is also spread through: • Coughing or sneezing; • Contact with feces (from diapers, for example); • Contaminated objects and

The best way to avoid catching Coxsackie virus is to frequently wash hands with soap and water.

Your daughter’s day care likely has a policy about when sick children should stay home and when they can return to day care. (And, presumably, they thoroughly clean their facility every day.)

If your daughter does catch the illness, there are many things you can do to help. For example: • Make sure your child gets plenty of fluids to drink. Avoid fluids that are acidic, like orange juice, or salty foods. They can make your child’s mouth sores sting. Cool or frozen liquids (like Popsicles) work better than warm ones.

• Give acetaminophen and/ or ibuprofen (never aspirin) for fever and pain.

• Talk to your doctor about numbing medicines to help the mouth pain, if sores are severe.

Most of the time, children with hand, foot and mouth dis-

ease get better without seeing the doctor. But call the doctor if: • Your child has a high fever (102 degrees or higher) that doesn’t come down with ibuprofen or acetaminophen, or any fever that lasts more than three or four days.

• Your child isn’t drinking and shows signs of dehydration.

Signs include: dry mouth or no tears when crying; decreased urine (children should urinate at least once every six hours); increased sleepiness or fussiness.

In the last few years, a new species of Coxsackie virus and a related virus called enterovirus A71 have been identified in the United States (and elsewhere).

These viruses can cause typical hand, foot and mouth disease, at first. But they can go on to cause more serious disease. That makes it more important to take your daughter to the pediatrician if she develops the more severe symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease that I mention above.

Friend is rude, obnoxious Dr. Wallace: My best friend and I have known each other ever since first grade. We’ve done almost everything together. Whenever we’re alone together, everything is great. If another girl joins in, everything is still great. But let any male between 15 and 19 enter the scene and she makes believe I’m not there and directs her entire attention toward him.

We went to the mall last night to get a birthday present for her mother. While we were there we met two cute guys from a neighboring town. 2. If she continues to ignore you in the presence of boys, tell her that the next time it happens you’re leaving, and then leave when it happens.

3. If she still doesn’t get the message, do yourself a favor and spend

A German proverb goes: When two dogs fight for a bone, and a third runs off with it, there’s a lawyer among the dogs.

Yesterday, we looked at third hand high on defense. When trying to win the trick, third hand puts up the bottom of his equally high cards. For example, from J-10-4, he plays the 10. But what does third hand do when he cannot win the trick because someone – partner or second hand – has already played a higher card than his best?

Look at the East hand in today’s deal. West leads the diamond ace against four spades.

Which card should East play?

Over South’s one-spade opening, West wanted to act, but had nothing that he could do. To make a takeout double with only a doubleton heart would have been asking for trouble. And a two-level overcall requires at least a five-card suit.

North was right to jump to four spades. Yes, declarer might have been about to lose the first four tricks, but it might have been laydown.

When West leads the diamond ace, East is supposed to signal whether he does or does not hold the queen. And the way to do that here is to follow suit with his queen, the top of touching honors, as he cannot win the trick.

The queen shows the queen and the jack (or a singleton queen, which is impossible here).

This should give West the key to the best defense. He should lead a low diamond at trick two. East will win with his jack and shift to the club queen, giving the defenders the first four tricks.
