Elburn chamber gives accolades Members, businesses of the year receive honors ELBURN – After working her final day as the director of the Town and Country Public Library in Elburn, Mary Lynn Alms picked up an accolade Friday night at the Elburn Chamber of Commerce recognition dinner.

Alms was chosen as the chamber’s member of the year at the event, which took place at Hughes Creek Golf Club in Elburn. Alms retired from the library after 35 years as its director, and her final day was Friday. She smiled as she received warm applause from those in attendance.

Also, two shared honors as the business of the year.

Edward Jones was recognized.

Financial adviser Dan Murphy has run the chamber’s annual golf event for more than five years. Da Capo Music Studio shared the recognition.

Ben Westfall and Kristin Paxinos, the co-owners of Da Capo, were the chairs of the chamber’s Christmas Stroll for the past two years. They also launched a community bike ride, Folks on Spokes, that took place last year.

“We just did all this work because we’re a part of the community,” Westfall said. “It’s great to just have a chance to do it. To be acknowledged for it after the fact, it’s wonderful.”

He encouraged other business owners to get involved with the chamber.

“When you are volunteering your time or when you are being generous to your community, it comes back around,” Westfall said. “I think that businesses in any town have a certain amount of obligation to do it.”

St. Charles police chief commends bars on taking proactive measures

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When Police Chief James Keegan presented the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission with an annual breakdown of police activity at the bars and restaurants allowed to serve alcohol past midnight, he cautioned the members from misinterpreting the data.

He presented the information – which included the number of police incidents, arrests and liquor violations associated with each business – last month during the commission’s consideration of late-night permit renewals for 21 establishments.

The permits allow establishments to serve alcohol until either 1 or 2 a.m.

They were created in 2014 following ongoing discussions that started with former Mayor Don DeWitte about over-serving and the rowdy downtown nightlife.

Since joining the police department in summer 2014, Keegan said he

has seen not only progress but also a willingness to cooperate from liquor-license holders.

Bars are encouraged to call 911 before an issue “gets out of hand,” Keegan said, and establishments have taken such proactive measures as buying devices that check whether an ID is valid.

So, he said, a higher number of police incidents at certain establishments could be attributed to the bar calling police about fake IDs or another issue warranting police intervention. Those proactive measures shouldn’t be held against the businesses, Keegan said.

He said the decision to recommend renewal of the late-night permits was based on a comprehensive review of the nature of the incidents as well as the willingness of the businesses to cooperate in abating the issues at their establishments.

The police department recommended approval for all of the requests. Eight applied for the 1 a.m. permit, while 13 applied for the 2 a.m. permit.

Chamber scholarship: Elburn’s chamber will offer three $1,000 scholarships to Kaneland High School seniors who plan to attend either a four-year or community college.

Seniors who do not attend Kaneland but are residents of the school district are eligible.

LOCAL BRIEF Geneva Lions set site for regular Monday meetings

GENEVA – The Geneva Lions Club will move its regular Monday meetings to Aurelio’s of Geneva, 330 W. State St., Geneva, effective Monday.

The club meets from noon to 1 p.m. most Mondays. It previously met at various locations.

The weekly lunch meetings feature informative presentations from community organizations, provide networking opportunities for club members, and are used to conduct club business and plan outreach.

The Geneva Lions Club works within the communities of Geneva and St. Charles to raise money primarily for the benefit of those with sight or hearing disabilities.

Experience creativity at Batavia Fine Arts Festival

BATAVIA – The Batavia Fine Arts Festival is a celebration of the arts, not only for students at Batavia High School, but also for the greater community.

The fourth annual festival will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, 1201 Main St., Batavia, on the BHS campus. Visitors of all ages will experience hands-on activities and learn about the works that students have created throughout the year, as well as meet community artists.

“It’s a celebration of the arts at the school, but also in the Batavia community, because we like to bring in artists in the area to showcase their work as well, and even set up shop as a vendor,” said Jennifer Melendez, an art teacher at BHS and event organizer.

This year’s free indoor festival will feature a creative corner for patrons to make their own artwork; poetry readings; storytime for children; vendor tables featuring community artisans; musical performances by the high school’s chamber orchestra, jazz com-

A highlight of the event will be The Empty Bowls Project, an international, grass-roots movement to raise money and awareness surrounding hunger issues. BHS students have created ceramic bowls that will be available for purchase for $10. Those who buy a bowl will be treated to Kimmer’s Ice Cream, owned by BHS alum Kimberly Elam. All proceeds will benefit a local nonprofit organization.

Finally, the Black Box Theater will host entertainment all evening. Videos created by students enrolled in video production class will start at 5 p.m.

‘POLICE OFFICER’S POINT OF VIEW’ Campton Hills academy shares police procedures with citizens

bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Shootings, domestic violence, canines and crime scenes with bodies – welcome to Campton Hills’ first Citizens Police Academy. Seventeen village residents are participating in the 10-week course introducing them to police and police procedures.

So far, the group has covered the shooting range and what happens in court, as well as crime scenes. Upcoming sessions will cover traffic stops and domestic violence. Its purpose is not only to demystify what police do, but also to build relationships between police and their community, Police Chief Dan Hoffman said.

Officers Steve Millar and Dan Hatt are co-teaching the village’s first class, and they said they hope to continue it next year. Both officers came from Streamwood, and they said that department also offered police academy courses for citizens.

Millar said that when he first came to came to Campton Hills, he found no real connection between the residents and the police.

“It has to do with [the village] being all spread out and because [residents] feel protected,” Millar said. “It’s a complete disconnect. They don’t feel like there’s any crime here.”

Having residents and police get to know each other during two hours of class time over 10 weeks “is a great relationship builder,” Millar said.

“It gets them involved and [helps them] understand a little better what is really going on,” Millar said. “They see me as Steve. Rather than being afraid, they see me as approachable. They should be able to approach me and talk to me.”

Hatt has lived in what is now Campton Hills for 16 years. The village incorporated in 2007.

“I’ve watched the police department develop over the last seven years, and having this citizens police academy is affording us [an opportunity] to mingle with the community and help them see what the police department is all about,” Hatt said. “They are surprised to see the training we go through and what all we have to do.”

The reaction is about the same from those who are in the class.

“We went into the shooting range for practical experience with police calls … and [saw] actual situations where we had to react and had a fraction of a second to shoot or not shoot,” Ken Wiegel said.

“We didn’t do well at all,” he said. “I ‘killed’ my partner and myself.”

Brenda Wiegel said the group was given three scenarios using red lasers to simulate an actual weapon.

“How in the world do these men make these split-second decisions?”

Brenda Wiegel said.

Considering heightened awareness of police issues in the past year, Brenda Wiegel said taking the class provides a different perspective from what is reported in the news.

The session on crime scene investigation had participants looking for evidence and trying to figure out what happened, Brenda Wiegel said.

“It was amazing,” she said. “There was a bullet right next to the body and a gun in the garbage can, and we missed that.”

Chuck Freiberger, 67, also a retired educator who participated in the acad-

emy, said the course also provides a lot of insight about Campton Hills and its services.

“We’ve only lived here 18 months. We moved here from the Elmhurst area,” he said. “We wanted to get to know the town better. Although in many ways, it’s a quiet community that is fairly crimefree, the police work very hard. … It’s not an easy job, in spite of the fact it’s a bucolic and easygoing community.”

His wife, Cheryl Freiberger, 58, who works as a middle school teacher, said the course showed “the normal citizen” what a police officer’s job is like.

“I don’t think most people realize what they go through,” she said.

Kindergarten preview Thursday

BATAVIA – Elementary schools within Batavia Public School District 101 will host kindergarten preview sessions Thursday. Parents of incoming kindergarten students are strongly encouraged to have their children participate in a session at their future school. To be eligible for kindergarten enrollment for the 2016-17 school year, children must be at least age 5 on or before Sept. 1. Kindergarten preview is a one-hour session during which prospective kindergartners participate in activities as a small group while being observed by teachers and parents. ST. CHARLES – Those wanting to learn about what it’s like to work in law enforcement have less than two weeks to apply for the St. Charles Police Department’s annual Citizens Police Academy, according to a news release.

The free class will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for nine weeks beginning March 22. Most classes will be in the police department’s training room, 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles.

Applications are due March 14.

According to the release, the program intends to give residents and business owners a better understanding of how the police department operates.

In addition to meeting officers, participants will learn about such areas as criminal and narcotics investigations, arrest and search procedures, courts, traffic stops, the K-9 unit and crime scene processing, the release states.

The curriculum uses both classroom instruction and outside demon-

strations, the release states. It noted that students may try the activity being demonstrated, such as processing a “crime scene” for fingerprints and getting a radar reading on a moving vehicle.

Through the Citizens Police Academy, the police also can learn how the department is meeting the needs of its citizens, the release states.

Applications are available at the police department and at the city’s website, www.stcharlesil.gov.

Completed applications may be mailed to the St. Charles Police Department in care of Officer Bill Tynan at 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles, IL 60174, or emailed to him at btynan@ stcharlesil.gov.

Applications are subject to approval and include a background check, according to the release.

Irish-Americans to be grand marshal for St. Pat’s Parade

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Downtown St. Charles Partnership announced Tuesday that local Irish-American residents will serve as the grand marshal for the 17th annual St. Patrick’s Parade.

Members of the parade committee who are Irish-American suggested the idea in honor of the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising and the beginning of Ireland’s independence from Great Britain, DSCP Events Coordinator Jake Anderson said.

In a news release, Shay Clarke of McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub stated that he is delighted the parade is dedicated to the historical event.

“It was a very significant event in Ireland’s history,” he stated in the release.

“This is a great way to honor the Irish immigrants that are a part of this country.”

Children of local Irish-Americans will participate on the grand marshal float, Anderson stated.

“I think that epilepsy is something that a lot of people are affected by but not a lot of people know about,” Alexa Hill, manager of Hill’s Country Store, stated in a news release.

“With every cupcake or cookie sale, we are handing out bookmarks that have the steps to take if someone is having a seizure. They all have pictures of someone that has epilepsy on them that you wouldn’t necessarily think is affected by it. I hope this project will help others learn about epilepsy and its effects while raising some money for a great cause.”

OBITUARIES HELEN S. ANDERSON Born: July 14, 1917 Died: Feb. 28, 2016

Helen S. Anderson, 98, of Batavia, IL passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, IL. She was born in Wausau, WI, on July 14, 1917, the daughter of William and Helena (nee. Schulz) Strehlow. She was united in marriage to Charles Raymond Anderson on June 21, 1952.

Helen led a truly interesting life. As a flight attendant for PanAm based out of Miami, Helen recalled a machete as part of her equipment that would be necessary to cut her way out of the Everglades and save the passengers should a plane ever crash. Her beautiful contralto voice and love of music found her as a member of several choirs and was called upon to sing professionally for numerous weddings and funerals in Chicago and Wisconsin. Helen also spent time as a package designer for The Palmer Company in Chicago and was featured in an industrial magazine, “Packaging Parade (May 1945).”

After moving to Batavia in 1954, Helen was employed part time by Swanson’s Hardware in the office until accepting a job as the secretary to the director of nursing

at the old Community Hospital in Geneva until her retirement in 1983. Even after retirement, this active lady was one of the original employees at the new Target store in town.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, William and Helena; her husband, Ray in 2004; her brothers, Clarence, Martin and Lawrence Hardell; and granddaughter, Heather Anderson.

She is survived by her son, Eric Anderson of Batavia; stepson, James (Mary) Anderson of Peru, IN; grandsons Derek of Atlanta, GA, and Eric of Logansport, IN; her cousins, Roy (Sue) Schulz of Nakoosa, WI, and John Nien of Lombard; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends and neighbors, Gene and Sue Schroeder and family of Batavia.

A memorial visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until noon Friday, March 4, 2016, at Moss Family Funeral Home 209 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia, IL, with a memorial service immediately following at noon.

she moved to Geneva, IL, to follow a career as a human resources manager. Carol was passionate about travel and had a particular love of France and Italy and even organized a trip with her daughters, granddaughter, sisters and nieces that will always be a cherished memory. Creativity easily flowed from Carol, and she was known for her ability to execute a party with perfection and wrap a gift so beautifully and with such care that the recipient would not want to open it. She was a well-loved, loyal friend who will be missed by many.

A memorial service will be held at Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield, NJ, on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at 11:30 a.m., with a Repass at Boulevard 572, Kenilworth, NJ. Family was most important to Carol: she was a loving daughter, mother and sister and she leaves us rich in memories.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office announced that it will have a no-refusal operation on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

According to a news release, Kane County agencies will cooperate with the effort. In the release, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon stated “my goal is to have zero DUIs on a night we do a no-refusal. Although that hasn’t happened yet, maybe the luck of the Irish will strike.”

The release explains the no-refusal designation, stating that the initiative is designed to expedite police efforts to obtain a search warrant for individuals who refuse to submit to chemical testing after a DUI arrest. Assistant state’s attorneys are on hand to assist police officers through the search warrant process to ultimately compel a DUI suspect to submit to a lawfully requested blood, breath or urine test as required by Illinois’ Implied Consent

statute, the release states.

“This will be the sixth time we’ve held a no-refusal initiative on or near St. Patrick’s Day,” McMahon stated in the release. “We enhance DUI enforcement on St. Patrick’s Day because we want to do our part to discourage impaired driving to keep our roadways as safe as possible. We want people to have fun and support local businesses, but don’t drive drunk.”

According to the release, Illinois courts have consistently held that there is no right to refuse chemical testing when probable cause exists.

Anyone who declines to submit to chemical testing after a search warrant has been obtained could face additional charges.

The operation will be the 20th no-refusal since the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office began the program in 2008, the release states. In the 19 prior no-refusals, 131 drivers have been charged. Most have pleaded guilty to DUI, although many cases are pending, according to the release.

alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – After a long debate and a vote that was not unanimous, Kaneland School District 302 Board members Monday night approved a scaled-down plan to buy five 1-year-old buses for the 2016-17 school year.

The staff recommendation was for the district to buy 10 1-year-old buses in the amount of $799,280. District officials listed a trade-in value of $58,700 and a total cost of $740,580.

Because the district is ordering about half as many buses, the total cost likely would be about half of the original estimate, although officials didn’t yet identify which buses would be traded in.

It was approved by a 6-1 vote, with

Veronica Bruhl, the board’s vice president, voting against it. Board member Cheryl Krauspe indicated she was voting for the plan because she did not want to turn down five replacement buses, but she said she supported the original plan for 10 buses. Board member Gale Pavlak said she agreed with Krauspe.

It was the final item on the agenda of a meeting that lasted nearly four hours. Throughout the meeting, board member Ryan Kerry asked how the district would address a potential $900,000 deficit for the 2016-17 budget.

Kerry called on district officials to find places to make cuts.

During the bus discussion, board member Peter Lopatin suggested that the district perhaps could buy five of the 1-year-old buses instead of 10. District officials indicated they had the

MAPLE PARK – Five new members will be inducted this year into the Kaneland Hall of Fame, according to a news release issued by Kaneland School District 302.

Chris Gould, Phil Nickels and Bonnie Whildin will be inducted May 2 as part of the Kaneland High School academic/achievement awards/hall of fame event at the school, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park. There will be a dessert reception before the induction at 6:15 p.m. at the school’s cafeteria.

Chad Clarey and Beth Creamean Roti will be inducted in late May or early June as part of the school’s annual senior athletic banquet and awards event. A dessert reception will follow in the auditorium lobby. All are welcome to attend either event, according to the release, which noted details of the honorees: • Gould will be inducted in the service category. The release indicated that he was the valedictorian of the class of 1987 and was a U.S. Navy pilot tactics instructor. It added that he received two Navy commendation medals and two Navy achievement medals, and that he graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in agricultural engineering.

• Nickels will be inducted in the service category. The release indicated that he and his wife, Sara, served as missionaries in Tanzania with the

Rafiki Foundation. It indicated that the organization provides Christian ministry through full-service child care and education to double orphaned or abandoned children.

• Clarey will be inducted in the commitment category. The release indicated he began his full-time track and cross country coaching career at Kaneland at the age of 23, and that he is a teacher in Batavia’s school district and a coach in the Kaneland district. It added that “his dedication to teaching and coaching has earned him many awards, both locally and at the state level.”

• Whildin will be inducted in the commitment category. The release indicated she taught for 26 years in the Kaneland district as an art teacher and served on the Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival planning committee from its inception in 1998 until she retired in 2011. It added that she “continues her vision of making the KAI [Kaneland Arts Initiative] a vibrant part of our school culture.”

• Creamean Roti will be inducted in the individual athletic achievement category. The release indicated that she was a second-team all-state performer and a three-time all-conference selection, and that she was captain of her team at DePaul University. It added that she coached at Kishwaukee College and Illinois Benedictine College.

Before the vote to reduce the purchase to five buses, board members voted on the original plan for 10.

Bruhl, Krauspe and Pavlak voted to acquire 10 buses. Kerry, Lopatin, Rivas and Witt voted against it. After more debate, the final vote was taken to reduce the purchase to five buses. Krauspe called the final result “a Band-Aid.” “I freely admit this is a Band-Aid,” Kerry said, but he again added that he could not continue to vote no on everything.

The genetic technology revolution can’t be stopped BLOOMBERG VIEW One of the most exciting and promising developments in the history of medical science may bypass the U.S. if Congress fails to act. It needs to lift the ban on federal spending on research involving human embryos.

Other governments are already responding to the progress being made in genetic technology. Britain has given researchers permission to use an ingenious new gene-cutting technique called Crispr-Cas9 to investigate how human embryos develop. Chinese scientists have wielded the same tool to see if it’s possible to fix, in human embryos, the gene responsible for beta-thalassemia, a deadly blood disorder. (So far, no.)

In the U.S., such studies are allowed – but only if they are privately funded. Not only is there the congressional ban, but the National Institutes of Health has refused to fund research that uses gene-editing technologies on human embryos.

This prohibition, unfortunate in itself, poses a greater problem: When genetic techniques advance to the point where they might be used clinically – that is, to safely prevent disease in human embryos that progress to live births – the Food and Drug Administration won’t be able to license them. This gives Congress even more compelling reason to change course.

The FDA has pointed out this problem: Its own expert panel has recommended medical scientists be allowed to pursue “mitochondrial replacement therapy,” or MRT. This is an experimental genetic technique that has the potential to prevent debilitating, sometimes deadly, mitochondrial diseases with so-called three-parent embryos (it swaps an embryo’s flawed mitochondrial DNA with that of a healthy donor).

For such technology to move beyond the laboratory and into actual practice, however, the FDA would have to license it, as if it were a drug or a medical device. But the agency said Congress prevents it from “using funds to review applications in which a human embryo is intentionally created or modified to include a heritable genetic modification.”

And this is precisely what MRT does: It modifies an embryo in a heritable way. By the same token, the kind of human DNA-editing that Crispr is expected to enable – to alter genes responsible for diseases such as Tay-Sachs, Huntington’s and sickle cell anemia – would presumably result in heritable changes. So, it’s possible to imagine a future in which there are powerful medical weapons that would be prohibited in the U.S. It’s true that these advances raise ethical and social concerns. In the case of MRT, offspring would have genes from three people – nuclear genes from the main parents and mitochondrial genes from a separate “mother.” And the changes this would bring about, however beneficial, would be irreversible.

The way to deal with these concerns, however, is not to ban the practice. It is to carefully regulate and monitor it, and keep all participants sufficiently informed. This is the strategy recommended by the FDA panel and being followed in the U.K., whose parliament has authorized researchers to pursue MRT. In other words, scientists should proceed with caution – but they should proceed. The alternative is to ignore an exhilarating opportunity to alleviate human suffering.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Career politicians

To the Editor: Both Springfield and Washington, D.C., are dysfunctional for one simple reason: career politicians. The insatiable appetite for power and absolute control has paralyzed the political process. The real winners? Politicians. The real losers? Hardworking citizens.

As the saying goes, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

There’s no better example of this than Illinois Speaker Michael Madigan. For about 30 years, he has ruled with an iron fist – never satisfying his unquenchable thirst for more power. His strategy? Increase his political influence by destroying anything that gets in his way. The key takeaway: There’s a lot of good people under that bus.

The state is falling deeper into debt; many are still out of work; and businesses are moving out of state. After eight months, we still don’t have a budget. Schools are running out of money, and benefits are getting cut for those who need it most – our teachers, police officers and firefighters.

Although I live in Washington, D.C., I am a product of this great community, and I still care deeply about what happens in the area that I still call home.

It’s here in Kane County where I attended preschool,

elementary school, middle school, high school and college. You can take the guy out of Kane County, but you can’t take Kane County out of the guy.

Chris Lauzen is a career politician. He’s increased his influence by destroying anything that gets in his way.

Springfield dysfunction has now made a home in Kane County. Don’t let him rule for 30 years, too. The results, I’m afraid, will look the same.

Vote for a career businessman – vote for Ken Shepro.

Batavia clamps down on ‘D,’ moves on to regional final

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Tom Poulin saw his St. Charles North boys basketball team play the way he wanted for three quarters Tuesday night against Batavia.

The only problem was the Bulldogs dominated the second quarter on both ends.

Batavia locked down defensively to allow just three points – all on free throws – in the second quarter en route to building a lead it never relinquished to pull away from North, 50-43, in an IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional semifinal.

The victory gave Batavia its first 20-win season since 2008 while earning the Bulldogs a spot in Friday’s regional championship against the winner of tonight’s semifinal between St. Charles East and Geneva.

“We try to stick to single-digit quarters, defensively,” Batavia senior guard Canaan Coffey said. “That’s one thing we pride ourselves on. We built up a lead from that heading into halftime and that gave us some momentum after that. It was big for us in that second quarter to lock down.”

Coffey scored eight of his 13 points in the second quarter, knocking down two 3-pointers to help Batavia (20-9) erase a three-point deficit after one quarter and take a 22-15 lead into halftime.

Poulin was extremely proud of the way his team battled, as it did much of the season when things didn’t go its way, but knows that stretch without a field goal was tough to overlook.

“That second quarter ended our season, in my opinion,” Poulin said. “We broke away from what we wanted to do and Batavia took advantage of it.”

“They were just consistent the whole night,” North Stars senior Jake Spaniol said of the Bulldogs. “Our season ended in the second quarter, when we got away from the things that we wanted to do.”

What became even more frustrating for North (8-16) was the fact that after cutting a double-digit lead down to nine, the Bulldogs went into a stall mode, taking a minute at a time off the fourth-quarter clock on their offensive possessions.

With Batavia being in the penalty for much of the final quarter, it was free-throw time for the Bulldogs, where they knocked down 15 of 21 attempts Tuesday night and nine of 12 in the

“This team has always been about keeping its composure,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “Whether it’s at the

free-throw line, or it’s pressure situations, we seem to do the right thing most of the time. (North) traps us and we got an open layup out of it. We thought it may have been a little early to go into it, but we took what they were giving us.”

North didn’t go quietly. Even when Batavia appeared to be pulling away, after building a 12-point lead after two free throws by Coffey with 1:08 to go, Griffin Hammer knocked down backto-back 3s to pull the North Stars within six.

But Batavia’s leading scorer on the night, senior Carter Eberhardt, knocked down a couple of free throws to not only end hopes of a North come-

back, but also end its season.

“We knew they wouldn’t go away,” Eberhardt said. “They’re a good team, but we always keep going. No matter what’s happening in the game, whether the other team is trying to come back, we always keep pushing. It’s something we’ve gotten more and more comfortable with as the season has gone on.”

Hammer led the North Stars with 13 points, as teammates Kyle King (11 points) and senior Mikey Schroeder (10) joined him in double figures.

Batavia will await the winner between East and Geneva, as the Bulldogs split with both in the regular season, winning both contests at home and falling on the road.

ST. CHARLES – For most of the season, Jarod Karom’s black St. Charles North boys basketball road uniform lacked the blue shoulder stripe the rest of his teammates sported.

The culprit was a manufacturer mix-up – not a loose nail on a locker room door frame or even an aggressive washing machine – but here’s wishing the fashion abatement spurred from the senior guard’s penchant for darting up and down the floor.

If not that sleek accessory, Tuesday’s IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional semifinal offered the latest chance for North to earn a proverbial badge of honor and continue a gritty stretch run. Alas, top-seeded Batavia channeled its regular season self, sending the sub-.500 North Stars to a season-ending defeat and an early equipment turn-in.

Just not a somber one.

“We went through a lot of adversity this year,” North senior forward Jake Spaniol said, “and to finish the season the way we did, with some quality wins, I think it just really kind of shows the integrity of our team. Obviously, we thought we were capable of playing Friday, but when a team beats you three times in a season, you’ve got to tip your hats to them.”

Regional championship-bound Batavia swept North during the Upstate Eight Conference River Division season en route to a league title that immediately was put to the test. You can’t walk far in the East gym this week without hearing two things: A friendly concession-stand-is-open reminder from PA man Neil Currie and someone calling this regional a mini-UEC tournament.

On Monday, North edged Bartlett, the only UEC Valley entrant in the regional among five River clubs, in a quarterfinal game. Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos again took notice of a North Stars team that earned six of its eight wins after New Year’s Eve and relayed the urgency to his players.

“We’ve got a group where they understand that,” Nazos said. “We say it, but they believe it. ... I think part of that is the reason why we’ve had the season we’ve had. We have a real athletic, mature group. And tomorrow in practice, they’re going to practice the same way they have all year. It isn’t going to be coming in all

Batavia and North share conferences and campuses not far from the Randall Road corridor, as well as diligence, it seems.

North Stars coach Tom Poulin, who now jumps into his role as coach of the school’s softball team, also lauded his team’s workout habits.

Those remained constant throughout the winter.

“Very, very rarely did we have to coach effort,” Poulin said. “They came to work every day no matter

what happened in the last game, and there was a stretch there where we couldn’t pull out a win. We had developed leads and then lost. We had some tough, tough losses. Hardto-deal-with type of losses. And they showed up in the gym the next day ready to try to get a win, and they continued to work.”

An extended field goal drought spanning the final seconds of the first quarter and the 5:33 mark of the third ultimately sunk the North Stars.

In an interesting twist, though, players hardly had to labor to leave the postgame locker room and sit

together once more, gathering in the baseline bleachers.

“It’s tough,” Spaniol said, “because we thought we’d be playing Friday. But you’ve just got to accept it.”

Karom could attest to that resilience, having remained one of the North Stars’ floor leaders even without a stripe.

editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland boys basketball team held a narrow lead after the first quarter against Hampshire, but turnovers led to the Whip-Purs taking a lead through the second and third quarters.

But late foul trouble Joe Conroy for Hampshire led to the Knights comeback and eventual 73-66 victory in an IHSA Class 3A Kaneland Regional semifinal on Tuesday.

“We knew coming in that Hampshire was a really good team who was on a roll and on fire at the right time,” Knights coach Joe Conroy said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. We didn’t bring the intensity early that we needed, but we were able to turn it up in the second half.”

In the fourth quarter, it was time for Dylan Vaca and Mark Lilly – who scored eight and 15 points, respectively, in the final period.

Lilly, who led the Knights with 23 points, also hit seven free throws down the stretch.

“Mark Lilly really stepped up in the second half and led us the way we needed,” Conroy said. “He did a great job of pushing the ball and getting to

the rim when he saw the opportunity. Ryan David and Dylan Vaca did a great job whether they were drawing the defense on to them or moving around to open things up for other guys, or just taking a shot when they found the opportunity.”

With the win, the Knights (19-8) advanced to Friday’s regional championship game against the winner of tonight’s semifinal between Sycamore and Aurora Central Catholic.

Conroy said that he is looking forward to the final and has a tremendous amount of respect for both teams. Kaneland and Sycamore are Northern Illinois Big 12 East rivals.

“We’ll fine tune our practice after we know who our opponent is,” Conroy said. “But we do know that Sycamore and ACC are both great teams.

I’ve only seen Aurora on tape, but we’ve seen Sycamore twice this season and we know that they’re playing well right now and with [Brett] Bemis back, they would be a tough opponent.”

Defensive charge puts jolt in Rockets

editorial@kcchronicle.com GLEN ELLYN – Zach Schutta came out with a hot hand during Tuesday’s IHSA Class 3A Glenbard South Regional semifinal against St. Francis.

He then closed the game with a clutch, defensive stand, taking a charge to keep the Spartans from making it a one-possession game and helping the Burlington Central boys basketball team escape with a 60-51 victory.

The Rockets (26-3) advance to Friday’s regional title game, where they will meet the winner of today’s game between Glenbard South and Marmion.

“You can’t just play offense and win games,” Schutta said. “You always have to take those good charges. That’s part of the game.”

Schutta helped the Rockets jump to a 21-11 lead after one quarter, doing his damage beyond the 3-point arc, sinking three of his tries.

Burlington Central had enjoyed a far more successful regular season than St. Francis (11-19) but the Spartans were battle-tested and didn’t go away easily.

“They have a very good team, and I thought our guys showed tremendous heart and character,” Spartans coach

Erin Dwyer said. “We have 11 seniors and we have them for a reason. Their character and everything they do for our program is tremendous, and if a few bounces go our way and we put in one more shot, anything could’ve happened.”

Burlington Central’s big guy in the paint, 6-foot-6 Ryan Fitzgerald, got into foul trouble early and then picked up his third foul seconds before halftime.

His absence had the Rockets sputtering at times offensively.

“He’s a ball mover for us and we were too stagnant at times, primarily because he was in foul trouble,” Rockets coach Brett Porto said. “Our movement and our cutting wasn’t there,

but whenever we needed a play we responded defensively throughout the game, which was nice to see.”

Nicholas Kurtyka kept the Spartans close. His second of four 3s in the second half cut their deficit to 45-42 with 5:58 left in the third, but the Rockets responded with a 7-0 run.

St. Francis closed to within 52-49 with 1:23 left in the game thanks to a Gabriel Johnson layup, but the Rockets wouldn’t let them get any closer.

The Spartans were headed toward making it a 54-51 game with 36 seconds left, but Schutta stepped in and took the charge on a layup attempt to just about seal the win.

The Rockets took care of business at the free throw line, converting 19 of 23 attempts while St. Francis was only 7 for 15.

Schutta led the Rockets with 15 points while Fitzgerald had 11 and Ta Vontae Harris and Ethan Mayfield each had 10.

“We knew we had a target on our back and they were going to come out and try their best,” Schutta said. “They knew this could be their last game of the season.”

Johnson paced the Spartans with 17 points while Kurtyka had 14.

He’s worked so hard this entire season. To see him get out-touched like that is tough, but he still has a lot more swimming ahead of him. He’ll be back for more next season.

As a team, how you do feel the state meet went with a sixth-place finish?

We came in kind of mad. With our 400 free relay not making it here, we didn’t like that, you know. We just came in here and said we’re going to tear it up.

St. Charles North senior Joe Myhre capped off his boys swimming career in the perfect way. In his final individual swim at Saturday’s IHSA state finals at Evanston, Myhre swam a 44.92 in the 100-yard freestyle to win his first state title. He will now take his talents to Iowa. Myhre, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey to discuss his state title and more. An edited transcript follows:

GENEVA – The Fox Valley Hawks’ collective Cups runneth over.

Things won’t exactly change this weekend for the club boys ice hockey team composed of students from the Tri-Cities schools and Kaneland, either.

A 4-1 rout of Lane Tech in last week’s Blackhawk Cup Combined Division playoff opener put the Hawks in the tournament’s Sweet 16. Fox Valley (247-4) will meet Wheaton West at 1:55 p.m. Saturday at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “They’re quick. They make good decisions with the puck. They have a strong goaltender in what I’ve seen in some film.”

At 3:20 p.m. Sunday, the Hawks will begin a second, separate postseason tournament, hosting Leyden at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva in Illinois Suburban Hockey League Cougar Cup play.

A victory would put the Hawks in the best-of-three Cougar Cup finals against the DuPage Stars.

“It’s an exciting weekend for the Fox Valley Hawks, that’s for sure,” Gabrielsen said. “We have two games. Our JV team has two games. Big for the program.”

St. Charles East student Josh Gadow scored each of Fox Valley’s goals in the Lane Tech game. Batavia’s Aaron Karkos made 16 saves in goal.

The induction ceremony is set for July 2 at the Peppermill Resort in Reno, Nevada.

Kopec, the winningest coach in IHSA girls volleyball history, guided the Spartans to 12 IHSA state championships in 40 seasons. St. Francis’ sweep of Glenbard West in November marked her final crown – the first in Class 4A – and her 1,238th victory.

Information about Zika virus Dear Readers: Not surprisingly, we’ve been getting lots of letters about the Zika virus. In today’s column, I’d like to answer the questions many readers are asking.

• Where did Zika virus come from? Zika virus has been present for centuries in Africa. About 50 years ago, it spread to Asia. So far as we know, it arrived in the Americas (primarily Brazil) only last year. That means the vast majority of us in the Western Hemisphere have no immunity against it.

• How does it spread? The virus is carried by mosquitoes, primarily one called Aedes aegypti. They pick up the virus when they bite a person who is infected with it. They spread it to other people when they bite those people.

It is not clear if it can be spread directly from one person to another, as the influenza virus is spread when someone near you coughs, for example. There are a few cases in which the virus might have been spread by sex, but this appears to be very unusual.

• What is the danger from catching this virus? That depends on who you are. Most of us, even those of us in the Americas, don’t have any symptoms when we catch it. Some of us get aching joints, red eyes, fever and a rash, but it’s a mild, flu-like illness that typically lasts less than a week. Infection with the virus also infrequently may cause a nervous system disease in adults called Guillain-Barre.

But if you are a woman who is, might be or might soon become pregnant, there is reason to worry. There is strong evidence from Brazil when pregnant women catch the virus, there is a risk their babies will be born with birth defects.

aly – small heads and brains. (Several other infections also can cause this tragic complication of pregnancy.) Defects of vision and hearing also may occur.

• Can I be tested for this virus? Currently, only very specialized laboratories, such as those at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, can test accurately for the virus. Also, the tests are not perfectly accurate: They can both under-diagnose and over-diagnose the infection.

• Are there treatments for the virus? As of now, there are no treatments and no vaccines to prevent people from becoming infected. As you might expect, scientists all over the world are working to develop treatments and vaccines.

• Has the virus come to the United States and Canada? So far, there have been only a few cases of Zika virus infection among people in the U.S. and Canada, and they all caught the infection in a country south of the U.S. The virus would become a serious threat to the U.S. and Canada only if it was carried by mosquitoes in those countries. So far, that has not happened.

• What should I do to protect myself?

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll address that question. I’ll also talk about how we can better protect ourselves against other potential epidemics that might strike us.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Teens: It was tucked near the bottom of page one of the morning newspaper, but my eye was drawn to the small headline, “Runaway Nearly Slain.”

The opening line was cold, hard and brutal: “A 15-year-old runaway from home survived an execution-style shooting after she and another runaway were raped by two young men who had picked them up and had promised to drive them home.”

Instead, the men took the girls to a secluded part of a park and raped them, the article stated, then forced the older teen to kneel with her hands clasped behind her head and shot her twice. By the grace of God, she escaped death when the bullets deflected off her hands.

Authorities said the younger runaway girl, 14, also was going to be shot, but she escaped and contacted officials. The men were found and arrested.

What a heart-wrenching drama. I’m so happy the girls

survived this gruesome ordeal, but horrified it ever took place.

Teens, no matter how bleak things seem, they become a lot worse when you become a runaway.

Do everything in your power to work out family problems – at home, not on the run. A certain number of very sick people prey on teenage runaways. If the thought of running away ever crosses your mind, please reflect back on this column. Running away is never the solution.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My fiancée and I have known each Jeanne other since high Phillips school. I was the “good kid” with honors and the right parents. She was considered trouble and didn’t have the best home life.

Rumor had it she moonlighted as a stripper our senior year, but I always blew it off as false.

Fast-forward 12 years: I ran into her recently, and we decided to have dinner. I fell in love with her on that date. A few months went by, and I mentioned the rumors. She wasn’t upset and matter-of-factly explained she did start stripping in high school and continued through college. It bothered me, but the benefits of being with her far outweighed the negatives.

Now that we are engaged, she told me she had to “come clean.” She said there were times in college when she had sex with some of her regular clients. I am floored. She basically admitted she had prostituted herself. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to blame her for her past indiscretions, but this is a big deal. I don’t know how to let it go.
