Bunny has planned the annual Egg Hunt at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

More than 5,000 eggs will be scattered across the center’s soccer fields in two age-specific areas: ages 4 and under, and ages 5 and up. Please provide your own basket, and dress appropriately for the weather.

• Believe it or not, Sunset Pool opens for its 2014 season in just 66 days. Swim lessons are currently open for enrollment. Share and Care preschool finds new home Activity Center remains closed; roof damaged

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Share and Care Learning Center has a new permanent home following the closure of the village-owned North Aurora Activity Center at 1 N. Lincolnway because of structural damage to the building’s roof.

The North Aurora Activity Center has been closed since March 12 after structural engineers confirmed that the roof joists over the building’s west side show significant damage.

The unusually heavy snowfall this season increased the load on the building.

A report on the building’s structural integrity might be ready for the Village Board’s review for its April 7 meeting, along with cost estimates on what work needs to be done.

The building will remain closed until the village determines it can safely be reopened, Village Administra-

tor Steve Bosco said.

Meanwhile, Share and Care Learning Center will be moving permanently into the former Rainbow Tile building at 12 John St. in North Aurora. Share and Care was one of the main tenants in the North Aurora Activity Center.

“Our best plan was to find another place,” Share and Care owner Suzanne Starble said. “These families need stability.”

An opening date in the new building has not yet been set.

“We will open as soon as all regulatory agencies give us final inspections,” Starble said. “I think it will be very soon.”

Share and Care had served 122 children a day. Starble said the learning center will be licensed for 99 children a day at the new location.

The North Aurora Activity Center originally served as North Aurora Grade School from 1933 to 1968. Other tenants in the building include Haley’s Playground, which serves those with special needs.

In addition, the Friday Nite Spot, a volunteer-run activity for fourth- through eighth-grade students, is housed there.

Report: Petting zoo animals recovering Animal Control lauded for actions

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The 93 animals moved last week from an impounded petting zoo are doing well, Kane County Animal Control Administrator Rob Sauceda told a county committee Tuesday.

“They’re starting to bounce back,” he said, describing the animals as happy and alert. “It’s been great to see.”

The animals – whose population soon will increase

because several of them are pregnant – were taken March 11 from a farm in rural Hampshire Township after the petting zoo’s owner, Stacy Fiebelkorn of Elgin, was charged with two misdemeanors: cruRob Sauceda elty to animals Kane County and violation of an owner’s animal duty to procontrol administrator vide adequate food, shelter, water and vet care to prevent suffering.

In total, 11 animals and a horse fetus were found dead, and nearly 100 were in need

of food and water. An adult horse and the fetus were found on a farm near Maple Park, and the rest were found at the Hampshire Township location, officials have said.

Public Health Committee Chairman Monica Silva, D-Aurora, commended Sauceda for his work in this “unprecedented” situation.

“Mr. Sauceda, you have done a fabulous job from what I’ve heard,” she said.

Barb Jeffers, Kane County Health Department executive director, credited Sauceda for the successful move.

“You would have thought the planning was going on for months,” she said. “The execution was him entirely.”

In addition to his staff, Sauceda thanked many others who have helped, including various county departments, veterinarians, farms and the 81 volunteers who assisted in moving the animals.

Others have donated various supplies and money, he said.

Animal Control even has people ready to adopt the animals, he said.

Board member T.R. Smith, R-Maple Park, said he liked that Animal Control set the precedent that it will help all animals and not just cats and dogs, like it had in the past.

This has “really shown the public what we can do,” Smith said.

Elburn firefighters enter pizza business Pair helps open Firehouse Pizza in Feb. in Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With names such as backdraft pizza and meat wagon pizza, the newly opened Firehouse Pizza and Grill, at 17 N. Fourth St., Geneva, reflects two of the owners’ professions as firefighters for Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

M i k e H u n e k e , a l i e utenant and his wife, Christine Huneke, a firefighter/ paramedic, and their friend, teacher Edgar Pereda, opened the firehouse-themed eatery late last month.

The Hunekes live in St. Charles Township, and Pereda lives in Elgin Township.

Mike Huneke is a 1999 graduate of St. Charles High School.

“Why do this? It was an opportunity,” Mike Huneke said. “Someone came to us about another location, and it ended up not working out.

But the seed was planted.”

Huneke said he had worked with Pereda in the restaurant business years ago.

His wife had worked in restaurants before they became firefighters and Pereda became a teacher.

“We found a location, built a business plan and decided to run with it,” Huneke said.

“Geneva is a great location right in the center of the Tri-Cities. So far, the city and building people – everybody

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A court hearing began Tuesday regarding what items need to be completed or removed at Clifford McIlvaine’s property as part of his decades-long home improvement project.

The city of St. Charles has submitted to Kane County Judge David Akemann the list of items. Akemann previously allowed the city to proceed with work on McIlvaine’s property at 605 Prairie St., including correcting an unfinished roof.

The court hearing was continued until March 25 and March 26.

City officials are asking permission to remove vehicles, construction materials and rubbish from outside McIlvaine’s house, and move them to a storage facility at his expense. McIlvaine attorney Philip Piscopo said the city is overreaching.

“The city is trying to go way beyond the original consent decree,” Piscopo said to Akemann.

Bob Vann, the city’s building and code enforcement division manager, testified that McIlvaine has never called the city asking for a final inspection of the property or certificate of occupancy. Vann said he inspected the properClifford ty on March McIlvaine 11, and that it could not have passed a final inspection or been issued a certificate of occupancy.

“There were a number of code violations existing on the property,” he said.

The city sued McIlvaine in 2010, pushing him to get the home improvement project finished, and a work schedule later was agreed upon in court.

McIlvaine was briefly jailed in 2012 when he refused to comply with the city’s plumbing code as part of the project.

The project was supposed to be completed by the end of September 2012, according to the order.

So after more than 15 years of working as firefighters – she started in Elburn, he started in St. Charles and went full time in Elburn in 2002 – they also own a pizza carryout restaurant.

Because each has a fulltime job, their time at the restaurant is staggered, and

they depend on hired staff, he said.

They took some pizza names from firehouse terms, he said, such as “backdraft,” which occurs when a sudden infusion of oxygen re-ignites a fire, often explosively. The backdraft pizza has refried beans, onion, mozzarella and cheddar, topped with lettuce, tomatoes and jalapeños.

The meat wagon pizza has sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon and American bacon.

A meat wagon is a term dating back to old-time firemen, Huneke said, referring to a time when the coroner and the ambulance were sometimes the same vehicle.

“It’s all our own recipes,” Huneke said. “Nothing out of a can.”

The restaurant’s general manager, Patrick Liberg, said

other specialty pizzas include macaroni and cheese, southern buffalo chicken pizza and garlic butter pizza.

Firehouse Pizza and Grill also offers wraps, salads and appetizers.

“It has barbecue sauce, Italian beef, hot giardiniera and mozzarella cheese.”

Because of its name and affiliation with two firefighters, local firehouses – Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Elburn and Fermi – have been ordering their pizzas, Huneke said.

Firehouse Pizza is hosting a ribbon-cutting event at 4 p.m. today with free samples and raffles.

Kramer wins Republican bid for sheriff

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com With the Republican primary race for Kane County sheriff neck-and-neck throughout Tuesday night, candidate Don Kramer said he didn’t know which way it was going to go.

“It was a nail-biter,” Kramer said, noting he spent the night at a restaurant with about 25 close family and friends. “We kept our chins up.”

Ultimately, the votes favored him.

With all 291 precincts reporting in Kane County and the Aurora Election Commission, Kramer led Kevin Williams by 337 votes, according to unofficial results.

Although Kramer fell short in the rest of Kane County – Williams led 13,818 to 13,623 – the unofficial results showed he had more than enough support in Aurora. He had 2,194 votes while Williams got 1,662.

In total, 15,817 voters supported Kramer, while 15,480 backed Williams, according to unofficial results.

“I’m happy with the results,” Kramer said. “I know my opponent worked hard, and I applaud him for working so hard.”

Kramer is a Geneva resident and retired Kane County lieutenant whose experience includes managing shifts in the correctional center and patrol division; coordinating a traffic safety program; and writing more than $1 million in grants.

Williams is an active Kane County lieutenant, also of Geneva.

Both have made unsuccessful bids for the position of Kane County sheriff in the past.

With the primary over, Kramer said he is happy he can take a breather but acknowledged more work is ahead of him, as he will face Democrat Willie Mayes Sr. in

REFERENDUM ON TAX TO AID DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED

About 64 percent of voters say no on disabilities tax

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The massive effort in the past year to support a property tax increase of 0.1 percent in Kane County came to a resounding defeat Tuesday, according to unofficial election results, with 25,487 voting no to 14,465 voting yes, with nine precincts still out.

Charles Miles of Geneva, who had hoped the referendum would pass so his developmentally disabled adult daughter might get additional help, said those who tried to promote the referendum were disappointed in the loss.

“Obviously to all the people who worked so hard to try to get this passed, it is partic-

ularly disappointing to the families that this referendum would improve the quality of life for those who have developmental disabilities,” Miles said. “We knew it would be an uphill battle, but we did not expect for it to be that bad.”

If levied at the full rate, the measure would have increased the tax burden by about $100 a year for the owner of a $300,000 home.

The tax would have raised about $13 million to be administered by a disabilities board – also known as a 377 board – for housing, transportation, jobs and job training, among other services for people with disabilities.

collecting 34,260 signatures to get the referendum on the ballot after Kane County officials would not put the question to voters.

While supporters mourned the ballot defeat, North Aurora resident Rae Ann McNeilly of Kane County Taxpayers Fight Back said it represents a victory for taxpayers.

“There are so many people with so many special needs that to tie this kind of funding to the property taxes would be immoral and unjust,” McNeilly said. “That is not to say there is no compassion for these people with special needs.”

McNeilly said funding for those services should come from private donations.

Oberweis had 56 percent of the vote with most precincts reporting, compared to Truax’s 44 percent, according to unofficial election results.

As the results came in Tuesday, Oberweis continued his ongoing commentary Jim against U.S. Oberweis Sen. Dick Durbin, his opponent in November’s general election.

“We’re obviously very pleased that the voters of Illinois chose me to take on Mr. Dick Durbin,” Oberweis said, speaking from his election night party at Oberweis Dairy & That Burger Joint in Glen Ellyn. “I believe people want citizen legislators that are good for the state and not just good for incumbency.”

Oberweis said that Truax called him to concede the race.

Oberweis asked him to serve on a committee for health care reform and military-related issues, and he accepted, Oberweis Campaign Director Tom Mannix said.

As president, managing partner and co-founder of Veritas Risk Services in Oak Brook, Truax consults for businesses on health care benefits. He is also an Army veteran and a West Point graduate.

Truax did not return multiple phone calls and emails seeking comment before press time.

Anderson headed to rematch in 14th Will again face Hultgren in Nov.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Repeat candidate Dennis Anderson on Tuesday defeated newcomer John J. Hosta in the Democratic 14th Congressional District primary.

Anderson led with about 65 percent of the vote in most precincts, compared to Hosta’s 35 percent, according to unofficial election results across the district.

The victory sets up a rematch between Anderson and incumbent Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, who defeated him for re-election in 2012.

“I think that by and large it was a matter of [my] breadth of issue recognition and understanding,” Anderson said, speaking from his election night party at Rookie’s in Huntley. “I think John had some very

good points to make about trades and tariff issues, but it was a singular issue and I think that made a difference.”

Both Anderson and Hosta agree that Anderson benefited Dennis from name Anderson recognition.

Hosta said he wishes Anderson well, but thought he would be the ideal candidate for the general election.

Hosta said he would consider running again, but he said he will have to think about whether he should run as a Republican next time. The businessman took in the results from his home in Spring Grove.

Anderson said his campaign will begin working toward the general election in a few days.

To avoid a repeat loss to Hultgren, Anderson said he will try to draw him out to more public events and debates.

State Rep. Darlene Senger will face U.S. Rep. Bill Foster in November in the race for the 11th Congressional District seat.

Senger, R-Naperville, on Tuesday won over Naperville businessman Bert Miller, conservative talk show host Ian Bayne of Aurora and Grundy County Board member Chris Balkema, according to unofficial election results. Lisle resident Craig Robbins had dropped out of the race.

Senger attributed her win to grass-roots campaigning.

“We had a good strategy,” she said. “We looked at what we could accomplish.

I’m a proven legislator.”

The 11th District includes North Aurora, Aurora, Naperville, Lisle and Joliet. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, has held the seat since November 2012 after defeating former U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert.

Senger has been a state representative since 2009.

Before that, she was on the

Naperville City Council from 2002 to 2008.

“As [a] state legislator, I’ve taken on the toughest issues,” she said during her campaign. “You have to work with people, Darlene but you also Senger have to incorporate your principles into the solution. And I’ve been able to do that.”

Regarding the state of public education, Senger said individual states and not the federal government should take the lead in implementing standards.

“No Child Left Behind failed,” Senger said. “Each state and each district in the state is different. Every household is different, and every child is different.

That’s why you have to customize it uniquely to each working area.”

In a statement, Fos ter said he congratulated Senger on her victory and he looked forward to a “thoughtful and honest debate on the issues.”

Geneva Library Board Trustee Steve Andersson won Tuesday’s Republican nomination in the race for 65th District state representative.

According to unofficial results, Andersson received 4,353 votes; Geneva resident Daniel Ugaste received 2,958 votes; and Elgin resident Debbie Miller received 2,057 Steve votes. There Andersson are no Democratic candidates running for the seat in the primary.

The race was for the seat currently held by state Rep. Tim Schmitz, R-Batavia, who is not seeking re-election. He first was elected to the House in 1999.

The district represents parts of Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Campton Hills, Plato Center, South Elgin, Hampshire and Huntley.

Pension reform emerged as one of the main issues during the campaign. All the candidates agreed that the pension reform legislation approved last year by the Illinois General Assembly does not go far enough. Lawsuits filed by public labor unions and retirees have challenged the constitutionality of the legislation.

Among other items, the legislation includes reducing annual cost-of-living adjustments, phasing in increases in retirement ages, instituting a pensionable salary cap and reducing employees’ contributions by one percentage point.

Andersson said he hopes the courts provide direction as they look at the constitutionality of the legislation.

Keith Wheeler emerged as the clear choice Tuesday night, dominating a four-candidate race to become the Republican nominee for the 50th District state representative post in the November election.

According to unofficial results, Wheeler earned 5,820 votes in the GOP primary, more than the total combined from his opponents – 5,258.

Julie Cosimo was second with 1,994 votes; Beth Goncher Keith received 1,842 Wheeler votes; and Bill Keck got 1,422 votes.

Wheeler advances to face Valerie Burd, a former mayor of Yorkville, in the November general election. The winner will earn the seat currently held by state Rep. Kay Hatcher, R-Yorkville, who is retiring.

Wheeler, an Oswego resident, said he was pleased with the results and said he was “flattered” to receive such a high total. He said the key was driving home the message of trying to help neighbors who are out of work and trying to attract businesses that could provide jobs.

“We never stopped talking about it,” he said. “We were true to our roots when it comes to conservative issues.”

Wheeler praised his opponents for running what he called “a clean race.”

“It was respectful, and I think that’s what people want,” he said. “They want to talk about real things.”

Burd said Wheeler’s victory was “pretty predictable.”

She said she believes it sets up a race in the fall between two “very different candidates.”

Cunningham emerges as victor in GOP clerk race Will vie for 4th term in Nov.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Three-term incumbent Jack Cunningham won the Republican nomination to seek a fourth term as Kane County clerk, according to unofficial results in Tuesday’s primary election.

Cunningham, of Aurora, who has been clerk since 2002, got 17,700 votes. Challenger Mark Davoust, a County Board member, received 13,507.

“I am humbled and honored that the citizens of this county would give me another four years to serve them,” Cunningham said.

“It’s a great county with great people, and I’m looking forward to working for

them in the next four years.

I wish to thank them for honoring me.”

Cunningham goes on to the general election Nov. 4 and will run unopposed if there is no Democratic candidate.

Cunningham said he has always been involved in public service, and serving as county clerk is an extension of that. Cunningham said he brought the clerk’s office into the 21st century.

The county clerk’s office is not only responsible for elections, but for maintaining vital records of births, deaths and marriages, as well as the tax extension re-

cords of levies of each local taxing body.

Davoust, of St. Charles, has served on the County Board for nine years. His current term expires in 2016.

The clerk’s race took a different turn in the past week, when a complaint surfaced that a deputy clerk in Cunningham’s office may have violated state election law, and the county’s ethics ordinance.

Deputy clerk Jeff Ward, who was also working on Cunningham’s re-election campaign, used his county email account and the county’s server to send a campaign-related email during working hours. Cunningham suspended Ward for five days without pay.

In an email, county ethics adviser Grant Wegner said he referred the issue to the Kane County state’s attorney for further review.

Martin nabs Republican nomination for board

“I was very happy,” the

With 18 of 18 precincts reporting in John Martin Kane County, unofficial results late Tuesday showed

Martin netted 1,270 votes, while Tom Matson got 1,168.

Assuming he survives the general election in November, Martin said he is excited about serving the residents of District 11, which includes portions of Geneva and Batavia.

No Democratic candidates ran in the primary.

Lenert unseats incumbent Taylor

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Melisa Taylor’s time on the Kane County Board will end this year, as long as unofficial election results from the Republican primary late Tuesday hold true.

In a race separated by less than 300 votes, Bill Lenert of Sugar Grove had the edge.

He nabbed a total 1,547 votes – 1,170 in Kane County and 377 from precincts in the Aurora Election Commission, according to unofficial results with 12 of 12 precincts reporting.

Taylor had the support of 1,283 voters – 1,121 of which were from Kane County precincts, unofficial results

showed.

No Democratic candidate ran in the primary for District 5, which includes Sugar Grove, Big Rock and parts of Aurora.

The general election is Nov. 4.

Neither candidate returned Bill Lenert calls seeking comment by press time.

Lenert – who has a Master of Business Administration from Benedictine University and owns Lenert Insurance Group – has said he would apply his business sense to the County Board.

During the campaign, he said his goals if elected would

include holding property taxes steady and finding ways to lower them; extending Metra to Sugar Grove; and bringing more and better-paying jobs to Kane County.

He also noted a desire to be involved with the Workforce Investment Board.

Taylor, also of Sugar Grove, was first elected to the County Board in November 2010 and participates in several committees, including Public Health, Human Services and Legislative.

She has said her focuses include promoting Big Rock Campground as an economic engine for the surrounding businesses and supporting the full interchange project at Interstate 88 and Route 47.

He said a lot of people helped him with his campaign, and he appreciates all of them.

“It’s very rewarding,” Martin said.

Matson, a Geneva resident whose family runs Matson Jewelry, did not return a call for comment by press time.

In the two judicial races in the 16th Judicial Circuit, Kane County Circuit Court Judge James Hallock claimed victory, along with Geneva attorney D.J. Tegeler, according to unofficial election results.

Hallock ran against Aurora attorney David Howard for the “New Judgeship A” seat in the 3rd Subcircuit of the 16th Judicial Circuit. According to unofficial results, Hallock received 6,196 votes to Howard’s 4,354 votes.

Hallock was appointed as a new circuit felony judge in 2012, replacing retiring Judge Timothy O. Sheldon. Hallock has served as a judge in the county since 1992, when he was appointed as an associate judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit.

Meanwhile, another ballot request, the electricity aggregation referendum for unincorporated Kane County

residents, has been approved, according to unofficial election results tallied Tuesday night.

For the Sugar Grove library, the latest request was defeated Tuesday, and Carol Dolin, the library’s director, said it’s time to plan for the future. She said there will be some discussion on the topic at Thursday’s library board meeting.

“We can’t continue as we are now,” Dolin said, adding that officials will “have to look at where we can cut.” She said officials would seek input from residents, adding that they will have to do what the community wants. According to unofficial results, there were 1,676 “no” votes and 688 “yes” votes.

“The people have spoken,” she said.

The unincorporated Kane County residents also had their say Tuesday, and they opted to allow a bidding process in the hopes of lower electricity rates. That bid failed in 2012, but on Tuesday, 297 voters – or 53.32 percent – supported its approval. According to unofficial results, 244 voted against it.

Officials previously said if the referendum were success-

ful, individual households still could continue to get their electricity supplied by ComEd. Those who participate in the program will have different electric suppliers, but electricity delivery and service-related issues will still be handled

by ComEd. Several area municipalities already have electricity aggregation, including North Aurora, Sugar Grove and Elburn.

Rauner to duke it out with Quinn

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com As a newcomer to Illinois politics, wealthy venture capitalist Bruce Rauner beat out three veteran lawmakers for the Republican nomination in Tuesday’s gubernatorial primary election.

Rauner won with 41 percent of the vote in a tight race against state Sen. Kirk Dillard, who had 37 percent of the vote with 94 percent of precincts reporting, according to unofficial election results.

Rauner also beat state Treasurer Dan Rutherford and state Sen. Bill Brady, who

both conceded defeat.

Shortly after polls closed, Rutherford gave a statement saying he’d return to Illinois politics in a different role.

Early returns showed Brady far behind Rauner Bruce and Dillard.

Rauner Rauner, who was a lesser-known candidate before entering the race, spent more than $14 million on his campaign, including about $6 million of his own money, according to the Associated Press.

Rauner will face off against Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, who – in his bid for a second full term in office – won the Democratic nomination with 77 percent of the vote, topping sole challenger Tio Hardiman, an activist who put up little challenge.

Quinn took office in 2009 after the impeachment of Gov. Rod Blagojevich and defeated Brady – who won the GOP nomination – in the 2010 election.

Democrats have held the governor’s seat since 2003, and Rauner will have the opportunity to unseat Quinn in November.

8POLICE REPORTS Batavia • Peter D. Nicholson, 34, of the 0-100 block of Durango Road, Montgomery, was charged Thursday, March 13, with possession of a hypodermic syringe or needle and possession of marijuana.

• Matthew J. Richardson, 35, of the 300 block of Ridge Road, North Aurora, was charged Thursday, March 13, with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and improper lane use.

• John A. Cunningham, 50, of the 500 block of Waubonsee Trail, Batavia, was charged Tuesday, March 11, with trespassing at The Holmstad, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway.

• Matthew J. Benner, 25, of the 400 block of Chestnut Street, Batavia, was charged Tuesday, March 11, with driving under the influence.

Elburn • An employee at a business in the 1000 block of North Main Street reported on Wednesday, March 5, that a female former employee harassed her by telephone. The former worker called the business and asked to speak with the employee. When the caller was told the employee wasn’t there, she stated she knew the employee was there because she drove by the business and saw the employee’s car in the lot. The woman also showed up uninvited to the employee’s personal residence. Police told the woman not to contact the employee anymore, which she agreed to.

• A gray Fossil watch valued at $300 was reported stolen Friday, March 7, from a vehicle in the 800 block of Wayne Court, Elburn.

The vehicle’s owner said it was unlocked during the incident, and no other items were taken.

Another burglary was reported the same day nearby in the 400 block of Conley Drive. In that incident, someone took a $200 Garmin Nuvi GPS system from a vehicle that might have had a rolled-down window.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office • A resident of the 8N100 block of Thomas Road, Maple Park, reported Tuesday, March 11, that she received a letter from her bank’s fraud department stating someone used her account to make two unauthorized purchases totaling $513.

• A resident of the 34W200 block of Giese Road, Batavia, reported Thursday, March 13, that at about 9 a.m. he got a call from an unidentified woman saying he won a $100 Wal-Mart gift card and asked for his credit card information to process the transaction. He hung up and contacted police to make them aware of a possible scam.

St. Charles • George S. Ciran, 37, of the 4700 block of Grandfield Drive, St. Charles, was charged Wednesday, March 12, with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.08 percent, improper lane use and failure to signal when required.

Sugar Grove • Someone took a man’s cellphone on Wednesday, Feb. 26, while he assisted with youth activities at the Village Bible Church, 847 N. Route 47. The man waited three days to report the theft because someone suggested waiting to see if it was returned.

A person the man suspected of taking the phone denied having it to police. The man put a service lock on the phone, which is valued at about $400.

• A female resident told police on Wednesday, Feb. 26, that someone cashed two fraudulent checks, one for $980.76 and $975, from her bank account. The resident showed police that the authentic checks were still in her checkbook and she had not written them to anyone. The resident thinks that whoever produced the fraudulent checks had seen a check written in the past and used that to make up the fake checks. The resident was given a report number and advised to contact police with any new information.

• A homeowner in the 200 block of Whitfield Drive accidentally discharged her shotgun on Thursday, Feb. 27, into a bed. The homeowner had been taking guns out of the closet, and when a 12-gauge Ithaca shotgun was laid on her bed, it discharged. Police said it appeared that a birdshot round struck the end of the bed, hitting her bedside table with the pellets traveling through the table and striking the corner of the southeast bedroom wall. Several pellets were seen on the cabinet and drawer of the table. All the weapons were cleared and made safe. There were no injuries.

8OBITUARIES PATRICIA HAWLEY McLAUGHLIN Born: June 3, 1920 Died: March 4, 2014 Islamorada, Fla. – Patricia Hawley McLaughlin, 93, passed away March 4, 2014, in her home in Islamorada, Fla. Patricia was born June 3, 1920, in Evanston, to Don Milliken Hawley and Mary Wood Hawley.

Patricia’s early life was spent in St. Charles and then Geneva. She attended both DePauw University and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she majored in sociology and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Patricia’s first husband, Capt. Bonnie Alfred Little, a Marine in WWII, was killed in 1943 in the line of duty on Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands, being awarded both the Silver Star and Purple Heart. Patricia enlisted, following college, into the Red Cross.

While serving in the Pacific Theater Islands, she met her lifetime partner and husband, Capt. Mano “Mac” McLaughlin, a decorated marine.

Patricia and Mano married on July 19, 1947, in the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Geneva. Pat and Mac began their 63-year married life together in Milwaukee, Mano’s hometown. Patricia volunteered at the hospital and the VA. It was here that their first two children were born. Soon after, they moved to Geneva. Pat and Mac enjoyed summers of family fun around their pool, swimming, gardening and romping in the Fox River-front property. Two of Patricia’s many talents included arranging fresh flowers and spectacular table settings. Holiday dinners will always be remembered, having the 20-plus members seated around her table bathed in candlelight.

Sharing a deep love of America, they actively campaigned at the local and national level. They worked within the 15th Congressional District of Illinois for Federal House of Representatives Cliff Carlson, John Grotberg and Dennis Hastert. At the presidential level, Patricia again was found behind the scenes managing the details for Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. In all cases, they brought victory to their supported candidates within their district, Her campaign work was highlighted by a personal invitation to Reagan’s Presidential Inauguration, which she and Mac attended.

Patricia and her husband started a manufacturing company, Industrial

Foam Corp. She was the secretary and accountant of this corporation producing speaker horns and computer housings.

Pat’s father, Don M. Hawley, built a home in the Florida Keys in the 1950s. He was a co-founder of the Islamorada Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament. Pat and Mac shared Don’s love of fishing and spent many wonderful years fishing the flats of the Florida Bay with the likes of Capt. Jack Brothers and Capt.

Eddie Wightman. Patricia held the women’s world record for largest Permit caught on six-pound test line. Their shared love of fishing has been passed down to 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who affectionately call her “Mimi” dubbed so by her first granddaughter, Patty.

Patricia was a gracious, warm and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to laugh, dance and never went anywhere without her lipstick! She will be an enduring memory to all who were fortunate to know her.

Patricia is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother, Don “Din” Hawley; her three daughters, Mary McLaughlin, Margo “Midge” (George) Berry and Dorothy “Dody” (John) Carlson, and son, James (Karolee Sidler) McLaughlin; 14 grandchildren, Patricia Norton (Scott) McNiven, Mary “Alyssa” Norton, B. Roy “Brett” Norton, Don M. (Laura Erickson) Norton, William H. “Bill” (Leslie Happas) Norton, Sterling M. Berry, George A. “Bert” Berry, Hawley McLaughlin (Clinton) Vining, Brittany J. McLaughlin, Janis M. McLaughlin, Cliffard D. (Lila Honey) Carlson, James M. Carlson, Laura M. Carlson and Clayton “Mac” Carlson; and eight great-grandchildren, Ryan McNiven, Sophie Norton, Carly Norton, Noah Norton, Carter Vining, Drake Vining, Miles Vining and Mano Carlson.

The family will hold a Florida memorial in the fall.

HENRY SCHNEIDER Died: March 17, 2014 MAPLE PARK – Henry Schneider, 90, of Maple Park and formerly of Batavia, passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family on Monday, March 17, 2014.

He is survived by his loving wife, Anna, of 62 years; three children, Gene Schneider of Batavia, Rick Schneider of Maple Park and Karen (Chris) Schindler of Batavia; six grandchildren, Aaron Schneider, Bethany (Jeromy) Busse, Adam Paul, Eric Paul, Zachary (Jacqui) Schindler and their son Chevy, and Aimee Schindler; one brother, Eugene Schneider; several nieces and nephews; and a family of friends both here and abroad.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Olga Schneider; one sister, Irma Skokowski; one daughter-in-law, Melody Ann Schneider; one nephew, Henry Skokowski; and his favorite four-legged friend, Thor, his German shepherd.

The visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m.

Friday, March 21, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 950 Hart Road, Batavia. Private family interment will follow at a later date.

Some armed and dangerous THE WASHINGTON POST The National Rifle Association calls it “the most comprehensive pro-gun reform legislation in recent state history.” That’s true, sad to say.

After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012, gun-control advocates thought reasonable firearm restrictions might have a chance at enactment.

They scored a notable victory in Colorado but mostly failed elsewhere.

Now the old political calculus seems to be back at work – the momentum is with those attempting to weaken the nation’s already-lax gun laws.

Nowhere is this more true than in Georgia, where the legislature is considering the NRA’s “comprehensive” reforms, which are an embarrassment to anyone who claims to favor responsible gun ownership.

Georgia’s House has endorsed a series of proposals premised on the dubious notion that the more often guns are in the hands of willing shooters, the better.

The state Senate is considering a few measures of varying senselessness. Depending on the version, gun owners would be allowed to bring firearms into bars and government buildings; teachers and staff would be allowed to carry guns into schools, after some training; the penalty for bringing guns onto college campuses would be reduced to a small fine; and the state would be barred from keeping a database of gun owners with carry permits, to satisfy gun-rights conspiracists. In keeping with one of the latest trends in pro-gun lawmaking, another reform on the table would extend “stand your ground” protections to felons, who can’t legally carry guns.

Stand-your-ground laws are dangerous.

A Texas A&M University study last year found that states that adopted them, all within the past decade, see more homicides than do peer states.

Some might not consider that a problem, particularly if many of those additional killings were based

on shooters’ reasonable fear of injury. We disagree. Centuries of legal practice has demanded that those in danger retreat, if it’s safe to do so, before using deadly force. That discourages conflicts from escalating.

The stand-your-ground model encourages confrontations to get out of hand, almost certainly resulting in unnecessary deaths.

But instead of rolling back its stand-your-ground law, Georgia is poised to offer its protection even to people the government previously determined to be too risky to trust with legal firearms.

Georgia is not the only state with leaders who have failed the common-sense test on gun control.

Politifact points out that many states already have lax gun restrictions, including several that don’t require carry permits. But that’s a mistake Georgia’s leaders should be expected to avoid. So, too, should lawmakers in Ohio thinking of introducing stand-your-ground laws in their state. That would be a perverse legacy for Sandy Hook.

To the Editor: It is with serious interest and concern that we are responding to an article published Feb. 11 in the Kane County Chronicle, in which the Tri-Cities fire chiefs urged residents to dig out hydrants buried in the snow.

Over 30 years ago, RoDon Corp. in St. Charles addressed this critical issue of fire hydrants being buried in snow or covered with seasonal vegetation overgrowth by designing and manufacturing a high visibility fire hydrant locator that provides fire departments with instant visual hydrant location in both day and night and all inclement weather situations. Success with this hydrant locator – Hydrafinder – has led to a worldwide marketplace.

Our concern in the fire chiefs suggesting residents assist the fire departments by manually digging out hydrants buried in snow is the potential of personal injury, resulting in possible liability. Every year, as the winter season approaches, we are warned by the media of the dangers of snow shoveling, as it can lead to heart attack in certain individuals. The winter has been brutal in its snowfall and below-zero temperatures. We have to question the urging of anyone to personally submit themselves to such dangerous conditions when there is a specific product readily available to solve this crucial problem. It is our opinion that putting even one life at possible risk and the consequences of doing so needs to be reconsidered and addressed.

Another concern is the encouraging of residents to call their fire department to request help if they are unable to handle digging out a hydrant in their proximity. This could potentially tie up vital fire department phone lines with non-life-threatening calls.

RoDon Corp. is certainly aware of the seriousness and frustration of fire departments responding to emergencies and then being delayed to offer help because they are unable to visually locate the critical fire hydrant needed. We offer a solution with Hydrafinder that directly assists the fire department, while putting no Tri-City resident at possible risk.

Our deepest and most sincere respect goes out to all emergency responders and the dangerous job they perform daily on our behalf.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Annual egg hunt set GENEVA – The Geneva Park District’s free annual Egg Hunt is set for 10 a.m. April 12 outside the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

The Easter Bunny will scatter more than 5,000 eggs in two age specific areas – one for children ages 4 and under, and one for children ages 5 and up.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Water and sewer rates will rise, starting with the May bills, in Elburn, something Village President Dave Anderson called a “not fun” but necessary decision.

Residents can expect to pay $7 to $8 more a month for sewer bills as the village begins the process of modernizing its wastewater treatment facility. The decision to raise the rates was approved unanimously at Monday’s Elburn Village Board meeting.

Previously, John Nevenhoven, the village’s director of public works, said the sewer

rate will have to increase by at least $1 per 100 cubic feet of water each year for the next four years.

Officials for months have talked about the need for upgrades at the facility, citing safety and efficiency issues that they say must be addressed. The cost of the upgrades is estimated at $7.65 million, and the village has $1.5 million available. The fee increase will be in effect to help pay back the loans.

The plan is for the sewer rate to grow by the same amount each year through 2017.

“That was such a marvelous, marvelous thing to receive,” said Julie Little of the Maple Park Family Fund.

“We’ve never had any donation that large before.”

The Maple Park Family Fund received the $2,500 donation because local farmer John Biddle was picked as a 2014 winner in America’s Farmers Grow Communities. Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, America’s Farmers Grow Communities offers farmers the chance to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organization.

Biddle’s nonprofit choice was the Maple Park Family Fund.

“We’re so thankful to be picked,” Little said.

The Maple Park Family Fund started many years ago as some people helping each other in the village and has grown into a “huge community event” held in December that raises money through raffles, Little said.

“Every penny we make goes to helping families,” she said.

There was some debate over some of the figures. For instance, in the village’s recreation fund, the expenses for maintenance supplies and grounds were at $46,988. In 2013-14, that line was at $7,790.

Trustee Jeff Walter questioned why that was so high.

“That’s a $40,000 increase, and we don’t have very many parks,” he said. “What’s that for?”

Erin Willrett, the village administrator, said extensive maintenance would be needed at the park near the Elburn and Countryside Community Center. The village doesn’t own the park, but it is respon-

sible for the equipment. Also, she said the village now owns more open space in the Blackberry Creek community, and that area must be maintained as well. She said the Village Board would face decisions about such things.

Walter said the village should be looking at an income source if expenses would be increased. Grabarek suggested that the village consider using funds it receives from its share of the video gaming machines that are in operation at Schmidt’s Towne Tap and Knuckleheads Tavern. Grabarek’s idea had support, and officials said they would consider such a move.

Young Professionals Council holds mixer

In addition to providing support at Christmas, she said, the Maple Park Family Fund helps families with school supplies at the start of the school year and helps provide them with food, gas cards and medicine throughout the year.

As the need increased and the economy soured, Little said, those running the family fund – which is known by word of mouth – have worried each year that people won’t have as much money to spend on the raffle.

“This year, we saw a drop on the money we raised,” Little said. “It will be great that we’ve got this donation.”

Energized Hilton happy to be healthy

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Amanda Hilton experienced a funny sensation as the start of the girls soccer season approached – feeling rested.

That’s not a feeling to which the St. Charles East senior is accustomed, especially this time of year.

A four-year stalwart in East’s girls basketball and soccer programs, Hilton wishes she wasn’t quite so rested this spring, but nonetheless intends to transfer her pent-up energy into an especially productive senior soccer season for the Saints.

Hilton’s final basketball season ended prematurely with a hairline kneecap fracture during a Christmas tournament game, but the Nebraska soccer recruit was cleared to return in time for the start of soccer season this week.

“I feel more energized than I ever have because I had that little time off, and I don’t get time off much, so I’m very excited to be back,” Hilton said. “I feel so good and I feel better than ever, so I’m excited.”

A high-scoring guard in basketball, Hilton injured her right knee coming down for a rebound, though initially it wasn’t thought to be the type of injury that would be season-ending.

“That did not even cross my mind,” Hilton said. “The doctor [originally] thought it would either be a deep bone bruise or something with cartilage, and I’d only have to sit a game or two to get stronger again, but when I went in there and they said a broken knee – those were the exact words – I didn’t even know there was such a thing. It blew my mind. I was shocked, and they told me I was out for the rest of the

season, which was hard to hear.”

Hilton said it was emotional to watch her senior basketball season end from the bench but expressed pride that her teammates were able to finish the season on respectable footing without her.

But Hilton plans to be right in the middle of East’s soccer success this spring. The speedy, attacking midfielder covers vast ground and has several experienced returnees with which to partner in stirring the Saints’ attack.

The defense behind returning goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan is more of a question for the Saints, especially considering sisters Sam and Nicole Lombardo moved to California earlier this school year, Saints coach Paul Jennison said.

Emily Chapman projects to replace Ginther and has played well in preseason practice, coach Scott Parillo said.

Molly Thorson, Wheaton Academy, Jr., D Thorson also brings all-conference/all-sectional pedigree to the field and returns as the clear-cut leader of the Warriors’ defense.

Annie Waldoch, Geneva, Sr., D Waldoch is part of a highly experienced back line for the Vikings. She and fellow senior defenders Tory Herbst, Molly Stanfa and Maggie Bodine were keys in the Vikings’ sectional final berth last season.

Teams to watch Geneva Geneva notched 12 shutouts as a team last season and many more should be coming down the pike behind the area’s most seasoned pack of defenders. Scoring threats such as Michaela Loebel and Mary Landry should ensure the Vikings score enough to contend in the UEC River.

St. Charles East East veterans such as Amanda Hilton, Shannon Rasmussen, Anna Corirosi and Darcy Cunningham bring plenty of chemistry and playmaking skill to the field, and the Saints have an established goalkeeper in Kendra Sheehan. A new-look defense probably holds the key to the Saints’ level of success.

St. Charles North North winning big is close to a given under veteran coach Ruth Vostal, and returning talents such as midfielders Alyssa Brandt, Lizzie Parrilli and Hanna Durocher, forward Sophie Pohl and defenders Jenny Barr and Megan O’Leary give Vostal a solid base with which to keep the Stars clicking. Sophomore Lauren Neslund is a newcomer to watch.

Wheaton Academy Coach Dave Underwood’s team welcomes back nine starters and 15 returnees, so quality depth is on hand. Senior midfielder Abby Olson (12 goals, five assists last year) and defender Molly Thorson should be strong leaders for a group that bonded via a summer mission trip to Kenya and Uganda.

“It’ll be a case of adapting to what the needs of the team will be,” Jennison said.

In the meantime, Hilton – with energy to burn – figures to be a stabilizing force.

“She’s rested, she looks fit, so we’re obviously expecting a big year from her,” Jennison said. “She’s hopefully going to put herself in great position to move forward and get ready for her time at Nebraska.”

Bulldogs aggressive right out of the gate

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia girls soccer team played Tuesday night like it had been out on the soccer pitch every day since the start of preseason practice, dominating Plainfield Central on both sides of the field in a 5-0 season-opening win.

Tuesday’s nonconference clash actually was only the second time the Bulldogs ventured outside this season. The cold and snow kept the team’s practice sessions indoors until Monday.

“With only one day outside, I thought we did a pretty nice job,” Batavia coach Mark Gianfrancesco said. “I’m happy the way we moved the ball around. We’ve got some stuff we need to improve upon but overall a good result.”

Four of Batavia’s goals were scored in the first half.

“They came at us pretty strong in the beginning,” said Plainfield Central’s coach Ken Schoen. “We are a young team, so I don’t know if the girls were fully aware of how fast they needed to play and how hard they need to play and the amount of pressure they need to put on the other team.”

Schoen’s starting lineup included four freshman and three sophomores.

Junior forward Karina Rosales scored the first and last goals of the game for Batavia.

A Rosales shot from the right side of the net on a thrown-in by Tori Renfus scored the first Bulldog goal of the season less than five minutes into the game.

The two juniors combined for the final score at the 35:41 mark of the second half. Ren-

fus passed the ball to Rosales, who knocked the ball passed Wildcats goalkeeper Tiffany Lenza.

Alexis Bryl scored the Bulldogs’ second goal of the game eight minutes after Rosales scored on a boot from the right side of the goal.

Olivia Callipari scored back-to-back goals to end Batavia’s first half scoring. The first goal came on a header from the junior at the 23:15 mark. Her second goal on a pass from Rosales came on kick from the right side of the net with 18 minutes left to play in the first half.

“We were much better in the second half,” Schoen said. ”If we had come out with the same intensity in the first half that we did in the second half it would have been a better game to watch.”

The Bulldogs’ defense sty-

mied Plainfield Central. Most of the game’s action took place on the Wildcats’ side of the field. Senior Lauren Suhi, who guarded the net in the first half for Batavia, did not have any save attempts. Jenny Scara took over as goalkeeper in the second half and made one save.

Gianfrancesco even saw a positive in the 12 penalties assessed to his team, including

two yellow cards.

“I think we were very aggressive and obviously at times too aggressive, and that’s where the cards came in,” said Batavia’s coach. “A lot of the (free) kicks were in their end because we were pressuring them and forcing them into turnovers. It shows we are being aggressive and not sitting back.”

Fields bids farewell to Saints

Mooseheart senior forward Makur Puou contributed 33 points and 30 rebounds to the Red Ramblers’ final two wins of the boys basketball season over the weekend. They helped add up to a pair of victories that lifted the program to the Class 1A state title at the Peoria Civic Center, the first in program history. Puou, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, caught up with the Chronicle about the accomplishment. Here’s an edited transcript: The program has come on such a long road to get here.

How much sweeter does that make this?

We know that nothing goes smooth like that. … In life, there’s a lot of problems, no matter what.

If you have to get something, it’s difficult. You have to work on it until you achieve it. Like last year,

there were so many problems and so [many] people talking and things like that, you know. It would get on our minds last year.

But now, this year, we came out with another, different mindset and we know that we’re not going to stop the lies. Everyone’s going to say something, no matter what. … Not everyone’s going to like you and not everyone’s going to love you in life. … As long as we’re playing, it doesn’t matter what people are saying.

What are you thinking about college and where you might play?

I have some classes I am working on [to fulfill college admission]. If I don’t get to finish them, I will go to prep school … which is the most important. [Basketball], you can’t play your whole life.

Education is the most important to me.

Mike Fields joked his next move should be reaching out to Batavia football coach Dennis Piron about any openings with the Bulldogs in hopes of pulling off a Tri-Cities trifecta.

In his more serious moments, Fields expressed deep contentment with the football memories he’s already made. A longtime former Geneva assistant, Fields stepped down as head coach at St. Charles East after five seasons coaching the Saints, East announced Tuesday.

“I’m the luckiest coach in the state of Illinois,” Fields said. “I got to coach in two of the best schools and communities in the state in Geneva obviously and St. Charles, and I couldn’t be more proud of the things we were able to accomplish in the last 15 years I’ve been coaching in the Tri-Cities area.”

Fields cited family considerations – he and his wife, Mary, have a 6-year-old son, Max – in ending his coaching tenure with the Saints.

Fields went 25-23 with East and led the Saints to a trio of playoff appearances, including a 6-4 season in 2013.

Fields said there are no hard feelings toward East’s administration in making his decision, and said he plans to keep teaching at the school “as long as they’ll have me.”

“Mike’s a good man,” East

athletic director Mike Sommerfeld said. “He’s really good with kids. There are some family commitments that are really taking his attention, and he’s just kind of decided that’s going to take priority, which I can understand. I have four kids. I can certainly understand that.

He did a good job for us. We wish him well.”

Fields said demands on football coaches outside the season have exploded in recent years.

Some parents were vocal in their criticism about how East’s proMike Fields gram operated during the offseason, including the level of assistance offered in the college recruiting process.

“All of that has gotten to a whole ’nother level,” Fields said. “I never let that stuff bother me to be honest with you. I did the best I can for our kids no matter where I was, no matter what level, going back to being a freshman coach years and years ago. You just do the best you can for kids. … That certainly didn’t drive me to make this decision. It was based totally on my family. That’s what my priority is because you’re going to have [issues with parents] no matter what you do. You’re not going to please everybody.”

Fields, 48, met with Saints players Tuesday and called it

highly emotional.

“There were a lot of tears,” Fields said. “I love those kids. Those are great kids.

They have a great future in front of them. The kids going to be seniors, we just had a nice season with, I love those kids, and the [younger] kids I didn’t get to know very well, I feel cheated I’m not going to get to know them better.

That’s what coaching is all about.”

Sommerfeld said it will be “a pretty intense process here the next couple of months” to line up Fields’ successor. Whoever follows Fields would love to have the same kind of success Fields experienced against rival St. Charles North. Fields went 5-0 in games against the North Stars but 0-3 in East’s three playoff appearances.

East won an Upstate Eight Conference title in Fields’ first season. Good or bad, though, Fields said on-field results were peripheral to the relationships he cultivated with players and fellow coaches. One of his ex-players at Geneva, Shaun Ratay, was the Saints’ offensive coordinator last year, and Fields has remained in contact with countless others.

“They all made an impact on my lives, every single one of them, every single one I was fortunate enough to be able to coach,” Fields said.

“It’s not the wins and losses. The experience of being around those young men made me a better man.”

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab postponed. East baseball is scheduled to open its season March 26 with a home game against Barrington.

Practice has predominantly been indoors for area schools leading up to the spring season, with St. Charles East and St. Charles North sharing fieldhouse space at East.

“It’s worked out OK,” Sommerfeld said. “It hasn’t been ideal, obviously. A couple of days when it was nice they’ve gone on a parking lot blacktop or tennis courts, anywhere where it’s dry, just to get outside and kind of air things out.”

The Geneva boys basketball team knocked off Glenbard North during the regular season but was beaten soundly by Benet in Friday’s sectional championship game.

Benet, though, required a last-minute rally to defeat Glenbard North in Tuesday’s Hinsdale Central Supersectional, 62-59.

PALATINE – The St. Charles East girls soccer team opened its season on Tuesday with a scoreless tie against Fremd.

Saints goalkeeper Kendra Sheehan turned aside the Vikings’ best scoring chance with a key save.

East hit the post on one of its most dangerous runs.

“It was a good game, all around,” Saints coach Paul Jennison said. “Definitely a great game to start the season with.”

East enjoyed all but ideal conditions a year after playing through blowing snow in the early stages of its opener at Fremd, which uses an artificial surface on its field.

“It was definitely a lot nicer. It was 50 degrees when we got there, as well,” Jennison said. “We were very grateful to get outside.”

BOYS WATER POLO Waubonsie Valley 6, St. Charles North 5: At Aurora, St. Charles North (3-2) was unable to hold a 4-2 halftime lead in a road loss. Nick Traxler and Nathan Bawolek scored two goals apiece, while Collin Bawolek notched nine saves.

In a typical year, St. Charles East softball coach Kelly Horan organizes a “field day” with players and their families to groom the Saints’ diamond leading up to the start of the season.

This year – with leftover snow from a brutal winter still caking the diamond – called for something more. It called for a party.

Putting a happy face on a potentially daunting situation, Horan orchestrated a “shoveling party” Saturday at East in which varsity players and their parents chipped away at the snow on the diamond.

Horan reports that participation was robust and spirits were high.

“I’ve never, ever doubted how dedicated, and I use the word ‘hard-core,’ my kids and my parents are,” Horan said.

“Nobody in the program was surprised they were going to spend some time to do this. …

The parents were awesome. It was just great bonding time.”

Horan said the successful shovel session was in line with the level of cooperation she’s come to expect from East softball families.

“Any time we need something, whether shoveling or ordering sandwich for away games, they’re more than happy to help with that type of stuff I don’t necessarily want to spend time to do, but it’s really important,” Horan said.

The Saints – defending IHSA Class 4A state runners-up – are scheduled to open their season at home March 27 against Glenbard North.

It’s premature to know whether East’s field will be playable by then, but Horan said “I’m optimistic because why waste time on being not?

But I think we’re going to know by the end of this week.”

Meanwhile, East athletic director Mike Sommerfeld said Tuesday that a March 28 Saints baseball game at Palatine already has been

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com DeKALB – For the first time since 2010, Northern Illinois is going into spring practice without having named its starting quarterback.

Three players – sophomores Drew Hare and Anthony Maddie and junior Matt McIntosh, will compete for the job throughout the spring and fall camp.

It’s one of a number of things to keep an eye on in spring practice. Here are the five storylines to follow.

1. The quarterback competition NIU fans were spoiled with Chandler Harnish and Jordan Lynch. Maybe one of the three quarterback candidates will have a very solid career, maybe they end up winning conference MVP. At this point, it would be foolish to expect any of the three to be at the level NIU’s signal-callers were at the past three seasons.

Hare and McIntosh got some experience in blowout games last season, while Maddie worked with the scout team after transferring from Western Michigan.

NIU head coach Rod Carey said all three quarterbacks will be getting equal reps.

2. Akeem Daniels Tailback Akeem Daniels was a major threat during the end of the regular season in 2012.

However, he missed the entire 2013 campaign because of a foot injury. Daniels is practicing, and there’s some potential for the duo of him and

Cameron Stingily to be pretty dynamic.

“I think our backfield is going to make a lot of noise this year,” Stingily said during Tuesday’s pre-spring practice press conference.

3. Defensive line All four starters from last year’s unit – defensive tack-

Facing a $2.45 million cap hit for a player that had 243 receiving yards last season, the Bears decided to cut Earl Bennett. Jay Cutler’s college teammate and the Bears’ No. 3 receiver had spent six years with the club.

According to ESPN Chicago, Bennett declined a pay cut before being released – he took one before last season.

In 2013, Bennett appeared in 15 games with three starts.

He caught 32 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns, including game-sealing scores in wins over the Steelers and

Browns.

In the 15 games he played in 2013, Bennett was on the field for 53.8 percent of the snaps. The Bears’ most commonly used offensive formation had Bennett on the field, and that personnel grouping averaged 5.94 yards per play with Cutler.

What’s next at the No. 3 receiver spot? Marquess Wilson. As a rookie, Wilson had two catches in 10 games last season, will get the first crack.

He went to Florida to train with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, and the team has high hopes for the youngster.

Newcomer Domenik

Hixon, who has plenty of receiver experience, also will factor into the mix. Look for the Bears to address the position with another veteran or in the draft as well.

Izzy returns: Following one season with the division rival Lions, defensive lineman Israel Idonije is coming back to the Bears, the team announced.

In Detroit last season, Idonije appeared in 15 games with zero starts and had seven tackles and 0.5 sacks. That was coming off a 48-tackle, 7.5sack campaign with the Bears in 2012, when Idonije played in 16 games with 11 starts. He signed a one-year deal.

The past three seasons, NIU had the luxury of Mathew Sims. While Sims struggled at the end of the 2013 campaign, he came up with some big kicks during his career.

Senior Tyler Wedel has handled kickoffs the past three seasons, and was NIU’s punter last year. He has the ability to kick field goals, and went 3 of 5 for a long of 42 yards filling in for an injured Sims last season. The other kicker on the roster is sophomore Josh Orne.

5. The Huskie Bowl Let’s face it, spring games can be lame. Last season’s Huskie Bowl brought some excitement. It’s the same format this season, though the coaches have yet to be decided.

Linebackers coach Kevin Kane and offensive line coach Joe Tripodi were the coaches in last year’s game, with Tripodi’s squad winning.

Hopefully it’s a tradition that continues.

‘Bad Words’ is wonderfully good

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Don’t let the fact that this is a comedy about kids’ spelling bees turn you off. It’s a movie that’s equally nasty and funny, and though a lot of it is about kids, and one of the lead actors is 9 years old, it’s definitely not for kids.

This is an adult movie all the way, bearing a tonal resemblance to “Bad Santa,” and featuring about as many f-bombs as a typical Tarantino film.

It also has, among other ingredients, plenty of heart, a taste of revenge, the intensity of serious competition, displays of both good and bad sportsmanship and a mystery at its center. The title could refer to both the incredibly tough words that are given to contestants in the many small-town spelling competitions leading up to the big national one. The first word one youngster is assigned is “dactylogram.”

Or it could, and likely does, act as a warning about the freewheeling saltiness of the script. The first of those bad words comes less than a minute in, and many more follow.

This is about Guy Trilby (Jason Bateman), a miserable wretch of a man who’s stuck in a dead-end career of proofreading product warranties, and starts entering spelling bees, in which he’s the oldest contestant by about three decades, in order to ... well, that’s where the complicated, but the smoothly told script leaves you hanging for most of the film. It would have been more of a treat if the payoff was a little stronger, but the trip the film takes in getting there is well worth watching.

The piece of the plotline that I’ve already revealed may sound flimsy and illogical. I mean, how can an adult get away with competing in kids’ spelling bees? But Guy has a technicality on his side, one having to do with the fact that he dropped out of school in the eighth grade, thereby making him eligible. So right away, we get a film full of confused kids who have to sit next to him in auditoriums that are packed with angry parents who believe he’s trying to ruin everything for their kids. We also hear from contest officials who want him gone but realize that he’s gotten around some big loopholes.

Guy’s job has made him familiar with plenty of difficult words, and he’s a good speller (his first word is “frabjous”), but he’s got no social graces. He’s self-centered and he’s not at all concerned about being quietly cruel in equal measure to kids and adults.

But this is a comedy, and it’s mostly fast and funny, both verbally and physically, though it takes a brief dramatic turn near the end.

Bateman, making his directorial debut, brings the film in at a tight 88 minutes, nicely getting himself and his actors into the zippy rhythms of the script by first-time screenwriter Andrew Dodge.

Bateman’s Guy is a man on a mysterious mission, the gist of which he won’t even share with Jenny (Kathryn Hahn), the journalist who’s accompanying him on his cross-country trip from bee to bee. Guy and Jenny don’t really get along too well, but they do take part in one of modern cinema’s strangest fully clothed sex scenes.

Guy also must butt heads with the national spelling bee director Dr. Deagan (a deliciously mean Allison Janney) and the man who (I think) founded this biggest of bees, Dr.

Bowman (Philip Baker Hall). There’s terrific and chaotic chemistry between Bateman and those two actors, but the best parts of the film are when he’s spending time with his most formidable opponent, young Chaitanya (Rohan Chand). Watching them together, you’re kept wondering if they’re bonding or trying to psych each other out. Chand (“Jack and Jill”) plays it in a completely believable manner, coming across as nothing less than a real and very smart 10-year-old who happens to be spirited but lonely, and is in need of a friend. And Bateman, who could easily have been distracted by his directing chores, turns in one of his best performances, keeping it low key, carefully measured and on a remarkably even keel.

It’s a refreshingly original adult film that goes out on a very unexpected note because my, oh my, it sure does have an odd last act.

Trust involves more than knowing passwords Dear Abby: I have been in a relationship for two years. We gave each other our phone passwords as soon as we made it official to avoid keeping things from each other.

One night I had a sudden urge to go through his phone. I had never done it before, and when I looked at his Facebook messages, I saw he had been exchanging inappropriate pictures with someone.

I was shocked and angry, and it almost ended our relationship.

He deleted and blocked this person, and I forgave him. We don’t talk about it anymore. Helpful steps for family and friends of addicts Dear Doctor K: My brother is addicted to alcohol. How can I help him overcome his addiction?

Dear Reader: It is so hard to watch a loved one suffer. And addiction surely causes suffering.

In some ways, the suffering from addiction is worse than from other illnesses.

One reason is that family members and friends often worry that they might have contributed to the addiction. They worry that maybe problems in their relationship with the loved one drove that person to drink. Hard as it may be to accept, you aren’t responsible for your brother’s addiction.

Another cause of suffering is that many people think addiction is just a personal weakness, a lack of willpower. In fact, it is a disease.

Chemicals in your brother’s brain are creating an enormous desire to seek again the pleasure that drinking brings him.

But don’t misunderstand.

When I say addiction is a disease, I’m not saying that the disease is incurable. I’m not saying your brother is trapped and powerless to affect his condition, as he might be if he had a cancer spreading throughout his body. With addiction, a person can overcome the enormous desire they feel. It’s just really, really hard, and most

Behavior change rarely occurs quickly. Most people journey through several distinct phases before attaining their goal. Understanding these phases may help you to know when to step back or step in. I’ve also put an illustration of these stages on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

• Precontemplation. There is no thought of changing because the individual does not recognize a problem.

• Contemplation. The person recognizes a problem but is ambivalent about change.

• Preparation. The person has accepted the idea of making a behavior change and begins looking for ways to accomplish it.

• Action. The person takes a definitive step. For example, entering a support group for addiction.

• Maintenance. Temptation to return to old habits is inherent in any type of behavior change. With addiction, that’s especially true.

Brain chemicals continue to cause desire for a long time, maybe forever. Recognizing that lapses can

occur and developing strategies ahead of time to get back on track is crucial to quitting successfully.

• Relapse and recycle. The person resumes former behaviors.

Although discouraging, don’t view this step as a failure. Relapse can help the person recognize triggers and plan stronger coping strategies.

As someone with a loved one who struggles with addiction, here are some things you can do to help: • Speak up. Express your concerns in a caring way.

• Don’t make excuses. Don’t make it easier for your brother by lying to protect him from the consequences of his addiction.

• Be safe. Don’t put yourself in dangerous situations.

• Step back. Try to remain neutral. Don’t argue, lecture, accuse or threaten.

• Be positive. Addiction is treatable. Learn about treatment options and discuss them with your brother.

• Take action. Consider staging a family meeting or intervention.

Teen should allow father to be happy Dr. Wallace: I’m a 15-year-old girl in the 10th grade. My parents are divorced, and I live with my 42-year-old father. My problem is that he is dating a woman who is only 21 years old and he doesn’t see anything wrong with it.

It’s OK for him, but it’s becoming very embarrassing for me, especially since she looks young enough to go to my high school. If people ask who this “girl” is, I just tell them that she’s my sister. What really bugs me is when I see them holding hands (and even kissing).

I really was thinking about going to live with my mom, but she lives in Ohio and I don’t want to move away from California. Do you think my dad should be dating someone so much younger than he is? – Jessica, Palm Springs, Calif.

Dear Jessica: I can appreciate your feelings and would certainly feel uncomfortable if I were in your shoes. However, that doesn’t mean your father is doing anything wrong. It’s the quality of the relationship he has with the young woman that matters, not their 21-year age difference.

Since you don’t want to move in with Mom, you need to accept the situation and allow your dad to be happy.

However, it’s important that he continue to be a good father to you, giving you support, love, guidance and quality time. If he were failing in his job as a father, that would cause much concern.

Dr. Wallace: Our auto shop teacher had to be hospitalized for a serious injury suffered in an automobile accident.

He was a very good teacher and all of his students really liked and respected him. No-

Dear Jerry: In an emergency, someone without a credential or degree can be given a temporary teaching credential. In such circumstances, teachers are selected on the basis of their work experience. It appears that your auto shop teacher has the necessary expertise and is completely legal. Not all teachers use the same teaching techniques, but you can learn from all of them.

Dr. Wallace: Our family has been having a friendly debate regarding canned fruits and vegetables compared to frozen. We know that fresh-picked produce would be the best, but if it’s not available, which is better for you? – Sheila, Monroe, La. Dear Sheila: Frozen foods win, hands down.

Canned fruits often have sugar added to “enhance” the flavor, while canned vegetables are loaded with sodium, again to add to the flavor.

This week we are looking at bidding with weak hands – for example, the gorgeous two-count held by North. After partner opens one no-trump, he must not pass, but must convert the contract to two spades, here via a transfer bid.

His hand might be useless in no-trump, but will be worth three or four trump tricks in spades.

Note that North’s having to use a transfer, rather than a natural, drop-dead two-spade response, has the disadvantage of giving the opponents two chances to enter the auction; but it does allow the strong hand to become the declarer.

Author visits Blackberry Creek Elementary

As students, one by one, were honored for academic achievements at last week’s Kaneland School District Board meeting, a buzz began to build about a particular group of teens who were not yet at the event.

Then, they arrived, holding IHSA regional championship plaques and sharing the news that Kaneland’s scholastic bowl team had won a regional title. It was a rare moment of celebration for a team that doesn’t necessarily have the opportunity to bask in such glory on a regular basis.

Kaneland went on to place second to state powerhouse Rockford Auburn in the sectional championship, ending a season ranked 17th in the state by a poll of coaches from scholastic bowl teams. Coach Ken Dentino said he was “exceedingly impressed with what this talented team has earned.”

“This is a rare accomplishment for a school of our size,” Dentino said.

Four team members – seniors Nic Likeum, Muneeb Rehman, Ethan Witt and Matt Kalinowski – spoke about what it’s like to go up against Auburn, as well as what it’s like to be on the team and how others who might be interested could benefit by joining.

“They buzz in when you’re still trying to formulate what they are asking for,” Likeum said.

“It was a complete slaughter,” said Rehman, though the team members could smile because it was a memorable trip to get to that match.

The scholastic bowl is an academic competition in which team members score points by answering questions. Witt described the victory against Cary-Grove as difficult, with Kaneland needing to rally. He credited Likeum for buzzing in successfully to a tossup question that gave Kaneland the abili-

ty to pull through.

Witt, Likeum, Rehman and Kalinowski spoke of their college aspirations.

Witt, sporting a Massachusetts Institute of Technology shirt, said he would be studying aerospace engineering at that school. Likeum, headed to the Illinois Institute of Technology, also aims to study engineering. Rehman, who said he is undecided as far as his college choice, will go into bioengineering.

Kalinowski said he, too, was undecided. He aims to study video game designing.

All four said they would recommend the scholastic bowl experience to others.

Each described a particular strength. Rehman said he is

best with questions about foreign history and science, specifically biology. Likeum said he enjoys questions about chemistry and law.

Witt said he does well with math and physics questions.

Kalinowski said he does well with subjects such as mythology and pop culture.

But they said not all questions are impossibly difficult.

Kalinowski said there were several pop culture questions, and Rahman agreed, saying he found “a surprisingly large amount of ‘Simpsons’ questions.”

Education in Action Scholastic Bowl Regional Champions On Monday, March 10, the Kaneland Scholastic Bowl team squared off against 7 other schools as they vied for the Regional Championship title. After putting up two solid performances, the team met its match against rival Stillman Valley. The match was close throughout with the lead changing multiple times, but in the end Kaneland was able to pull away and bring home a Regional Title! It was fitting that the team brought home this award on a night that had already been set aside to honor some of Kaneland’s highest achievers. At the school board meeting on March 10, over one hundred students from Kindergarten through 12th grade were recognized for various academic achievements. Kaneland High School was proud to be able to announce 39 Illinois State Scholars in addition to the other students that were being honored over the course of the evening.
