While on a break, I noticed Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt – then running for re-election against challenger Craig Lee – coloring with his grandson, Declan Herron, 3, in the back of the large room.

GENEVA – St. Peter Catholic Church will present Living Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m. March 25 at the church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva. Actors will represent each station, then transition with reflective music between stations, stopping to capture a particular moment in time during Christ’s journey to the cross. A prayerful and meditative spirit will set the tone of the presentation.

Officials: Kohl’s closure in St. Charles offers opportunity

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The announcement that Kohl’s plans to close its St. Charles store by mid-June didn’t come as a surprise to those working to revitalize Charlestowne Mall.

Rather, it came as a relief.

Chuck May, the project director for The Quad St. Charles, said Kohl’s has been “the elephant in the room” for a while, as those behind the mall’s redevelopment efforts have known the retailer’s performance has been unacceptable.

There is relief in knowing Kohl’s future so plans for The Quad can be adjusted accordingly, May said.

The Quad is the new identity for Charlestowne Mall, which features four anchor tenants: Kohl’s, Carson Pirie Scott, Von Maur and Charlestowne 18.

In a news release issued Wednesday, Kohl’s stated its store at 3840 E. Main St. is one of 18 “underperforming” locations set to close.

It will be closed as of June 19, the release states.

The release indicated that eligible store associates will be offered the chance to work at a nearby Kohl’s or can accept a severance package. On average, the release stated, stores employ about 80 to 100 associates.

mistic” about the site’s future, as “with loss comes opportunity” for the Krausz Companies Inc. – the mall’s owner – to restructure the site in a way that works to its advantage.

Although the Krausz Companies purchased the mall in November 2013, it doesn’t own the Kohl’s site – Kohl’s does. May said it is “our hope to own that building” and develop options for that space.

“We’ve struggled with the leasing of this as an enclosed regional shopping center,” May said of the mall. “We’ve put it out there that we’ve had to rethink what we can do here.”

As for progress with The Quad, May said he expects an announcement within the next 30 days about a “major tenant” for another out lot on the mall campus.

It would be the second such announcement in a matter of months. In February, Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurants announced plans to build its 28th location at The Quad. It aims to open in 2017.

Students, musicians participate in Music In Our Schools Month celebrations

alagattolla@shawmedia.com Groups of third-, fourth- and fifth-graders excitedly filed into the multipurpose room at Kaneland Blackberry Creek Elementary School on a recent Friday morning. The children got quiet as the special guests from Da Capo Music Studio in Elburn started to talk.

Da Capo co-owner Ben Westfall explained to the kids that Da Capo “means from the beginning,” and he and fellow co-owner Kristin Paxinos started playing – Westfall on guitar and Paxinos on the flute and piano.

Between songs, Westfall shared jokes with the students, such as one leading into a song from the movie “Up.” “Did you hear that they have a sequel coming out? It’s called ‘Down,’ ” Westfall said with a smile. “That’s not true.”

The appearance was held as part of Music In Our Schools Month, which takes place each March. According to the National Association for Music Education website, the celebration started in 1973 in New York and became a month-long observation in 1985.

The website stated the purpose “is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music.”

Those at individual schools can decide how, or whether, to participate.

At Rotolo Middle School in Batavia, band director Keith Ozsvath has scheduled Music In Our Schools Month concerts for the sixth-grade band and the seventh- and eighthgrade band.

Ozsvath said there are more than 350 students in the band program at Rotolo.

Adding together the band, chorus and orchestra, he said there are more than 600 kids participating in music programs.

“Band and chorus really seem to be well-supported by our administrators and especially our community,” Ozsvath said, adding those in the district “have done a nice job of creating a culture of enjoying music. I think parents really see the value, and the kids see the value in participating in a really great music program.”

Variety Show, which stands for People for the Arts, provides an opportunity for students in St. Charles District 303 to perform in front of an audience.

In addition, the St. Charles Arts Council’s annual nExt Gallery Student Art Show does the same for visual arts. It is open through March 27 at a pop-up gallery at 11 E. Main St. in St. Charles.

Diane Handler, who has helped run the variety show, wrote in an email that the show “is intentionally connected to Music In Our Schools Month to highlight the importance of including music and the arts in the K-12 curricula and offering music/arts programming and lessons to students.”

Becky Blaine, a P-ARTS board member, said the variety show has been going on for 13 years. She said St. Charles has been supportive of the arts, and the event has enjoyed tremendous support and participation.

perform,” Blaine said.

At Kaneland Blackberry Creek Elementary, music teacher Brandon Fox said Westfall and Paxinos approached the school about putting on an event affiliated with Music In Our Schools Month.

He said there are other performances at the school during the month, such as a singing performance by third-graders at the school’s open house event.

Fox said the goal isn’t necessarily about helping students consider the pursuit of careers in music.

“I know not every student I teach is going to be a professional musician,” Fox said. “That’s an illusion that not

many music teachers have.”

Instead, he said, participation in music programs can improve critical thinking skills and self-discipline. He said kids who normally are shy can gain confidence.

Westfall said music is important, and not only for those who want to make it a career.

“People don’t think, ‘Well, we don’t need science, he isn’t going to be a scientist,’ or ‘We don’t need that math stuff, he’s not going to be a mathematician,’ ” Westfall said. “It helps you develop as a person.”

Handler wrote that studies can show benefits of music, but there is value beyond that.

“Music and the arts are also important for their intrinsic benefits, irrespective of test scores, because it is a unique way of understanding and expressing the world,” she wrote.

“There are some truths about life that can only be communicated as songs, stories, movement or images. The arts and music voice our emotions.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is increasing patrols this weekend for impaired driving and seat belt enforcement, according to a news release issued Thursday.

The extra patrols are part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaigns, the release stated.

According to the release, the effort supports IDOT’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program – or STEP – for fiscal 2016 and reminds those who celebrate to get a designated driver and wear seat belts during St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

STEP aims to reduce the incidence

of motor vehicle crashes and the resulting injuries and fatalities through increased, highly visible enforcement of seat belt use, impaired driving, speed and pedestrian safety during national and state enforcement campaigns, the release stated.

The release indicated seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in car crashes. Research has shown the risk of fatal injury to people in the front seat is reduced by 45 percent when seat belts are used properly, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent, the release stated.

ST. CHARLES – The future of the St. Charles Horticulture Research Center – a facility affected by University of Illinois financial decisions – soon might become clearer.

Matt Tansley, a land use planner for Kane County, told the Kane County Agriculture Committee on Thursday that a recent meeting of stakeholders resulted in “promising updates” for the center at Peck Road and Route 38 in western St. Charles.

Its future became uncertain last fall, when the university announced the center was one of four to be affected by a reallocation of resources.

The Feb. 24 stakeholder meeting included “a lot of good discussion” and participation from the St. Charles Park District, the Kane County Farm Bureau and horticulture center staff, among others, Tansley said.

The park district has agreed to pursue a memorandum of understanding with the university, Tansley said, describing the progress as “very much

in the early stages.”

The agreement could last three to five years, he said.

Based on tentative discussions, he said, the park district could use portions of the grounds for community gardens, demonstrations and educational programs related to food and agriculture.

Leasing the garden plots annually could generate $2,000 an acre, he said, noting the park district already manages about 450 community garden plots.

Committee member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, expressed enthusiasm for the garden plots, noting the demand for them.

Utilities for the property cost about $4,000 a year, which would be the park district’s responsibility, Tansley said.

He said it is unknown whether the property would continue getting free water from the neighboring youth center.

The memorandum would take effect after a current staff member’s position is discontinued at the end of September, he said.

Officials: Peabody sale won’t affect area Critic warns that nearly 200 municipalities ‘will be left holding the bag’ after interest sale

bschory@shawmedia.com Peabody Energy’s recent announcement that it would sell its 5.06-percent share of the Prairie State Energy Campus does not affect Batavia’s or Geneva’s investment in the downstate electricity generating plant, according to a spokeswoman for Peabody.

The cities, through their membership in the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, bought shares in Prairie State to provide decades of stable energy prices for their municipal electric systems.

Peabody, one of the world’s largest private-sector coal companies, announced it would sell its Prairie State interest to Wabash Valley Power Association for $57 million. Peabody’s original investment was $247 million, officials said.

But Sandy Buchanan, executive director of the Institute for Energy Eco-

nomics and Financial Analysis, said Geneva and Batavia will be among 200 municipalities “left holding the bag on this huge amount of debt they have to pay back in the form of higher electric rates.”

“They are stuck,” Buchanan said.

“All these communities were promised that the cost of power from Prairie State was less than market [price], and the reverse has happened.”

Buchanan said electricity is selling for $30 to $40 each megawatt hour on the open market, while Prairie State electricity costs $60 to $70 each megawatt hour.

Geneva officials referred questions to Prairie State spokeswoman and manager of government affairs Alyssa Harre. In an email, Harre disagreed with Buchanan that Peabody’s sale would affect the municipalities.

Harre also disagreed with Buchanan’s comments about the cost of Prairie State’s energy.

By Diane Krieger Spivak When Max Washington was four he decided he wanted to help kids with cancer, so he did what any self-respecting four-year-old would do - got his head shaved for St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s children’s cancer research.

In reality, few, if any, four-year-olds would consent to parting with their manes. But Max prevailed, and has been having his dome fleeced every year since then, raising thousands of dollars in the process.

Michael Olesen, owner of Stockholm’s, who has been supporting Max’s generous efforts by holding the event annually at the restaurant and micro-brewery, says the Geneva boy is nothing short of amazing.

“His parents, Matt and Jennifer Washington, come into Stockholm’s,” Olesen explained. “When you’ve got a young boy doing what he can to raise money for a good cause, I think it’s only nice to encourage that.”

Max, now 12, will undergo his eighth head-shaving March 22 where he hopes to meet his goal of $3,000. Max was rewarded for his selfless fundraising last year by being named a Knight of the Bald Table by St. Baldrick’s for seven years of volunteer service.

Last year he raised more than $6,000. Olesen, who had offered to have his own head shaved if Max met his goal of $10,000, went under the shaver anyway and held an additional fundraiser in honor of Max’s knighthood.

“We raised $3,000 that night alone,” Olesen said. “They took me out back and skinned me. I’m not doing it again,” Olesen joked. Having your head shaved is not a problem. Growing it back drives you crazy. This year I’ll write a check. I’m not giving up my hair again.

“It’s heartwarming to know you’ve got such a young person who is committed to kindness toward others,” Olesen said. “You hear all the time about how selfish and self-centered young people are. But

you know what? Here’s an example of one of those ‘young’uns’ who is awesome, working on a wonderful cause. Over Max’s tenure it’s a heck of a lot of money he’s helped raise for kids.”

Stockholm’s is donating 10 percent of its lunch and dinner sales to St. Baldrick’s March 22. The neighborhood pub and brewery, which turns 14 on May 1, is the kind of place that ingrains itself in the local community with good food and good times.

“We have an upscale menu that is freshly prepared,” Olesen said. “Instead of nachos we serve Papas Italiano - freshly made potato chips covered in garlic cream sauce, topped with parmesan cheese, crumbled bacon, diced prosciutto, tomatoes and chives.

When you order a pasta dish they literally take the skillet, pour in the heavy cream, throwing in the marinara, herbs and the sausage, simmer it all down, then lay it out over the pasta.

Stockholm’s takes the same care in its beers, which are unfiltered and naturally conditioned.

“It’s more of the old-fashioned traditional style of brewing you’d find in the late 1800’s or early 1900s,” Olesen said. “It allows the beers to having a broader flavor profile, which then, in turn, makes them ideal accompaniments to food.”

Twice a month Stockholm’s offers a special beer dinner, with a limit of 20 guests.

“We let the guys in the kitchen just go crazy with the menu,” Olesen said. “They serve something you’d think would only be served with fine wines. Instead, we pair their specialty food items with our beers and demonstrate why beer is truly an ideal accompaniment to food, even over wine.

“Everything we do, we try to do it to our very best,” Olesen said.

When the stock price of the company is going down, it’s common for a company to shed assets.”

McGrath said Batavia, like the other municipal electric utilities, wanted to invest in the power generation plant as a hedge against future energy costs.

“Things moved incredibly quickly … with the downturn in the economy and natural gas being cheaper than coal,” McGrath said. “The price of electric power is historically linked to the cost of natural gas. It puts pressure on what can be charged for coal.”

The actual task of watering is simple but the frequency of watering that each type of plant requires can be difficult to determine.

Wasco Nursery advises a frequency of 2-5 days for turf, groundcover and flowers using a lawn sprinkler applying 1” of water, or if using a hose, moistening the soil to a depth of 4” to 6”. For small shrubs, the nursery suggests 3-6 days of watering, while 5-8 days should suffice for larger shrubs. For all shrubs, use a slow running hose at 5-10 minutes per shrub or carefully use a root feed, but don’t overwater, at 3-5 minutes per bush. Finally, for trees, follow a frequency of 7-10 days with a slow

running hose. 30 minutes should work but make sure the water doesn’t run off. A root feeder can also be effective and save time, but you must be careful to not overwater. Remember that size, exposure, weather and soil/drainage should also be considered while watering.

A light application of a balanced granular fertilizer or one of the Espoma organic-based fertilizers in March or April are recommended the first spring after planting. They can give your plants a nice boost. Make sure to water properly after fertilizing to ensure the fertilizer gets washed down to the soil level. Always be careful when fertilizing. Never overdo it as you can damage the roots of the plant.

As for lighting, ask the experts at Wasco Nursery. Like people, some plants love the sun and others dislike it. Depending on the variety of plant, it may require full sun, partial shade or full-shade.

“The plant cost more to build than planned,” McGrath said. “The cost of operation construction, materials – which was paid in advance – all contribute to the price that has to be charged to the partners. And we are doing what we can to work with that asset in the long run, hoping – but not waiting – for the market to come back.

In January, Batavia hired Jenner & Block partner Michael Scodro to go through all the city’s documents relating to the Prairie State Energy Campus with the goal of broadening the city’s energy portfolio.

City attorney Kevin Drendel had said then that Scodro would review the city’s transition from a regulated electric market into an open market – and advise how to achieve a balanced and diversified energy portfolio.

McGrath said the law firm has not yet issued a report.

A class action lawsuit against Prairie State and some consultants still is pending in federal court, McGrath said.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Patrick’s Parade continues to draw more spectators to downtown St. Charles.

In a press release issued Thursday, the Downtown St. Charles Partnership reported 19,273 people attended last Saturday’s event, surpassing the previous year’s attendance of about 18,500.

Members of the local Irish-American community served as the parade’s grand marshals. They were recognized in celebration of the 100th anniversary of 1916 Rising and the beginning of Ireland’s fight for independence.

The parade also featured nearly 90 entries and had nearly 100 volunteers, the release stated.

Several entries were named winners in three categories, plus best of show.

Obama’s Supreme Court pick is ‘an ideal nominee in these divided times’ THE WASHINGTON POST As President Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland, the chief judge of the country’s second-most powerful court, to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, Republican leaders immediately accused the White House of playing politics. In fact, it is Republicans who are putting politics above their essential responsibilities. Garland should get confirmation hearings, and – after those – a straight up or down vote. Any political damage Republicans endure for refusing will be self-inflicted and well-deserved.

The case against Garland – well, there is not much of a case against him. He is unusually well-respected across the ideological spectrum. He worked his way up in the Justice Department as a prosecutor, gaining respect for supervising terrorism cases, before joining the federal bench.

He was confirmed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit 76 to 23 in 1997, and several sitting senators should remember voting for him.

One, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, once was quoted as calling him a “consensus nominee.” During his time on the D.C. Circuit, Garland has gained a reputation for thoughtfulness. He is an ideal nominee in these divided times.

All this is beside the point, GOP leaders argue. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky, said Wednesday that Republicans’ refusal to consider Garland is “about a principle, not a person,” explaining that “the American people should have a say in the court’s direction.”

But they did have a say – when they elected Obama to a second four-year term. McConnell and his Senate colleagues serve six years at a time, which, incidentally, means they are arguably

more lacking in democratic legitimacy in the final years of their terms than any other elected federal officeholders. One could draw all sorts of arbitrary lines circumscribing what presidents or senators should be able to do in the run up to an election. Each one would increase gridlock and further inhibit the government’s proper functioning. Elections are supposed to provide regular and orderly guidance to government, not shut it down for months at a time. The only workable principle is that politicians be allowed – indeed, expected – to do their jobs for as long as the country has hired them.

McConnell falls back on the argument that, as a senator from Delaware, Joe Biden argued in 1992 that the president should not tap Supreme Court nominees “once the political season is underway.” Indeed, it is almost certainly true that, if roles were reversed, Democrats would use the same strategy McConnell is pursuing. But Biden being wrong in the past does not change the fact that McConnell is wrong now. The debate about Garland’s nomination should not be about the unremarkable fact of political hypocrisy. It should be about Garland and his qualifications.

It may be true that Obama chose Garland with politics in mind, forcing Republicans to reject a supremely well-qualified judge. Yet Obama could have chosen to nominate a more ideological figure or a minority candidate with an eye to turning out voters. Instead, the president selected someone whose primary political advantage is that he is eminently reasonable, which is what a Democratic president would do if he were reaching out in good faith to a GOP Senate.

Republicans should respond with the same good sense.

To the Editor: Without a state budget, the General Assembly continued to vote on spending bills earlier this month, just as it has done since last May. The bills, drafted by the majority party with no input from the minority, seemed to fund important programs, including higher education, grants for students and human services. One thing is always missing in these bills, however – an adequate source of funding.

On the day before adjourning for a month, the House was asked to vote on a surprise spending bill that included nearly $3.7 billion for all manner of programs and services that had yet to be funded. This bill was introduced after most members had gone home for the evening, and thus avoided any public comment. Despite being presented as a “compromise effort,” no members of the minority party were at the negotiating table.

thority has been given that exceeds anticipated revenue this year. The comptroller’s office currently reports a backlog of bills waiting to be paid that totals $7.2 billion and growing, with almost 50,000 unpaid vouchers on hand and vendors waiting over a year in many cases to get paid. Allocating money without identifying revenue sources gives false hope to providers and their clients of expecting money but instead receiving an IOU. These accounting games must stop.

It’s no coincidence that Speaker MichaelMadigan has been blocking discussions of budget cuts, new revenue and operating reforms, as well as scheduling a four-week recess in the legislative calendar to get legislators out of the Capitol.

There was just a primary election to win. While the political games continue and another bill with overspending did pass, House members have shamefully left our constituents out to dry for another month.

I have joined in proposing appropriation bills with a funding source, made overtures of compromise and tried to negotiate a solution month after month. Again on March 3, I offered to help find funding and supported a motion to continue session during March to find resolution for a complete state budget. It’s well past time; people and organizations are hurting. Urge the speaker and governor to allow the legislature to work.

SUGAR GROVE – Waubonsee Community College on Tuesday announced name changes for two of its campuses.

Effective immediately, the Aurora Campus, 18 S. River St., Aurora, will be called the Aurora Downtown Campus; and the Copley Campus, 2060 Ogden Ave., Aurora, will be called the Aurora Fox Valley Campus, according to a news release.

“The renaming of these campuses aligns with our vision and reaffirms our commitment to the students, residents and employers in our communities,” Waubonsee President Christine Sobek stated in the release. “The fastpaced climate of higher education today demands that we be agile and adept at evolving to meet ever-changing needs while maintaining a high level of quality and delivery. The renovation of the Aurora Fox Valley Campus exemplifies those efforts.”

The Aurora Fox Valley Campus closed in December for renovations and is scheduled to reopen in July for registration for fall classes. It will be fully operating and offering classes on site in August, at the start of the fall semester, the release stated.

“The renovations will allow the college to better serve students in the far eastern portion of the college district, and provide a significantly enhanced facility for the college’s robust health care offerings,” the release stated.

“Programs that will be offered at the Aurora Fox Valley Campus are nursing, phlebotomy, medical assistant, emergency medical technician-basic, nurse assistant and surgical technology. In addition, the college will offer the office software specialist certificate at that campus.”

The release stated that when the campus reopens for the fall 2016 semester, it will feature expanded student services, including tutoring, library resources and testing services.

While some classes will be offered in the traditional 16-week format, a majority of offerings will be in an eightweek format.

“Since the 30,000-square-foot campus opened in January 1997, Waubonsee has been operating primarily out of the second floor, as first-floor office space was rented,” the release stated. “Now that the campus will be fully used by the college, the first floor is undergoing a complete renovation, creating instructional and administrative space. Other facets of the $4.8 million project include a partial renovation of the second floor, a new roof and new heating, ventilation and air conditioning units.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Geneva badminton coach Michael Glabinski isn’t ready to claim his team is 500 percent better than last season, but does like what he sees these days with the young squad continuing to get stronger and better on a daily basis.

In 2015, the Vikings opened their season against Glenbard East and won just one of 15 matches. On Thursday, Geneva, with only four returning varsity members, faced the Rams in their second contest of the season and fared much better, capturing six matches.

Despite falling to Glenbard East, 9-6, Glabinski was pleased with the Vikings’ showing.

“I’m proud of them,” Glabinski said. “We played strong against a very good team.”

Mollie McDonald and Emily Pokornowski both earned two wins for the Vikings. The two seniors teamed up at No. 2 doubles and topped their opponents, 21-12, 21-12.

McDonald said as the team’s No. 2, she just wants to help the squad compete in every match.

“I want to help us keep winning,” McDonald said.

Pokornowski won at fourth singles, 21-11, 21-10.

She said her two matches, although both straight-set victories, were draining.

“You are tired afterward in badminton,” Pokornowski said. “It takes a lot out of you.”

The Vikings opened the season against Elgin on Tuesday with a dominating 14-1 victory. Pokornowski expects the squad to continue to improve

as players get to know each other.

“We have bonded really well so far,” Pokornowski said. “We are a tight-knit group.”

Personally, she hopes to head to state this season, coming up one game short of that destination last spring.

The Vikings’ other two victories were Elizabeth Blaszynski at No. 1 singles, topping Glenbard East’s Nicole Liljestrand, 21-13, 21-12; and Sally Zuzuly and Gillian Clohecy at No. 5 doubles.

That tandem topped its opponents, 21-11, 19-21, 21-18. “(Blaszynski and McDonald) stepped up today. We needed them to win,” Glabinski said. “That was huge for us. Anytime we play, we need our top four to come through.”

Glabinski said Glenbard East (2-0) is normally one of the better programs in the Upstate Eight Conference.

Glabinski said for a seasonal program, Geneva (1-1) is doing very well.

“The (UEC) Valley schools play year-round. They have the Midwest Badminton Club (in Woodridge),” Glabinski said. “But our girls are not going to drive 45 minutes every day to play.”

BURLINGTON – Kaneland softball coach Mike Kuefler said he was hoping his Knights would combine quality at-bats with manufacturing some runs when they opened the season Thursday.

The Knights did half of that, forcing Burlington Central ace Emily Kisch deep into several counts. But they failed to get runs across the plate, stranding nine runners in a 4-2 loss to the Rockets.

“We’re a young team, and what we came in with today was what we needed,” said Kuefler, in his first year coaching a Kaneland team that finished third in Class 3A last season. “We had some quality at-bats, we worked the count, we manufactured some runs.”

The Rockets, also playing their opener, reached the sectional final round in Class 3A, losing to eventual state runner-up Marengo – the team that beat Kaneland at state. The Knights led, 2-1, and had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth, but failed to score.

Burlington Central took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

“It’s the first game outside, we’re facing an excellent pitcher in Kisch – she throws well – and to face that kind of pitching the first day out. ...”

Kuefler said. “I felt my kids were disciplined at the plate. Every at-bat we had we took her deep in the count.

We were offensive-minded when we got runners on base. Offensively, we did our job, but we left too many runs on base.”

Kisch dominated early, striking out five in a row at one point and finishing the game with nine strikeouts. Burlington Central scored an unearned run off Kaneland starter Courtney Davis in the third.

In the top of the fourth, Hannah Theobald doubled home Meg Cohrs with one out, then Davis hit a twoout, RBI single to right to give the Knights the lead.

The next inning, Lexi Abruzzo, Aly Jesinowski and Morgan Weber hit consecutive singles to start the inning, but after a fielder’s choice by Cohrs, Kisch struck out the last two Kaneland batters of the inning to escape the jam.

The Rockets took the lead for good in the sixth, with Kristina Ahlers starting with a single, then scoring on a double by Kisch. Gretchen Schrubbe singled home Kisch and

scored on a fielder’s choice by Danielle Yurgil.

“Kaneland, they’re a great team, they were putting pressure on us and I was just glad we could withstand it,” Maisto said. “Kaneland had the bases loaded with no outs and our defense was just able to focus in. Emily did a great job, but it’s a team effort.”

The Knights got runners to second and third with one out in the seventh, but Theobald ripped a line drive right at Schrubbe at third base,

and she turned the unassisted double play to end the game.

Weber had two of the Knights’ 10 hits in the game, as did Abruzzo.

Davis pitched the complete game for the Knights, allowing three earned runs, five hits and struck out three.

“The first three innings we were playing to win this game,” Kuefler said. “The last two, three innings it seemed like we sat back on our heels.”

Long reflects on hat trick topper Mother, fighting cancer, makes visit

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Chicago Steel forward Austen Long considers himself a fighter before anything else more neutral whenever he’s on the ice.

Last weekend, that stance justifiably softened after a surprise Long won’t soon forget.

Knowing his father, Steve, and younger brother, Layten, had traveled from the fam- Austen Long ily’s home in Blaine, Minnesota, for the Steel’s March 11 game at Fox Valley Ice Arena, Long figured he’d bask in the first hat trick of his junior hockey career with them.

He learned of a bonus upon emerging from the locker room. Long’s

mother, Lori, who recently was diagnosed with breast cancer, also made the trip to Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“I was just surprised after the game, her being there,” Long said.

“It was just kind of like that hat trick really made her happy, and I felt like she was part of the reason why I got it, because she was there.”

Long’s family contingent, which also included an aunt and cousin, also stayed for Saturday’s game before returning home. The Steel defeated the Team USA national developmental program on both nights.

Long, who daylights as a Geneva High School senior before coming to the rink, began the USHL season with Tri-City (Nebraska).

He speaks with his parents daily, but they are open in their attempt to limit his mother’s health updates.

Long said her prognosis is positive, however.

“They don’t tell me too much because they don’t want me to worry up here,” Long said. “They’d rather just have me focus on the task ahead.

“It was just kind of like that hat trick really made her happy, and I felt like she was part of the reason why I got it, because she was there.”

Because the USHL does not have any Minnesota markets, Long relishes in-person family time regardless.

The hat trick under his mother’s circumstances only augmented it.

“She was posting it everywhere,” Long said, “letting other family members know on social media stuff.”

Friendly confines: Beginning with today’s 7:30 p.m. visit from Waterloo (Iowa), the Steel will play nine of their final 11 regular-season games at

Fox Valley Ice Arena.

“That’s great. I mean, it definitely helps the team because we can focus more on playing home games and trying to string together some wins on home ice,” forward Max Zimmer said. “I think it’s just easier not having to travel every weekend.”

The extended home stretch balances an earlier sequence of 10 straight road games from Dec. 18 to Jan. 16, albeit with the USHL’s leaguewide holiday break in between.

Only trips to Waterloo (Tuesday) and Bloomington (April 9) remain as the Steel conclude their first season in Geneva after relocating from Bensenville last summer.

Do players feel the season has sped by?

“I think mostly because of the weather outside [changing], but other than that, it’s the same atmosphere inside the rink,” defenseman Matt Kiersted said. “Everyone has the right mindset that they want to go out there and win games. We’re not slowing down or anything.”

Peoria, St. Charles East senior Grayson Brucato advanced to the final four of the IHSA Class 4A Three-Point Showdown, drilling 11 of 15 shots in Thursday’s prelims at Carver Arena before making eight of 10 in a playoff.

“I’ve been shooting really well lately in practice, especially since our team as a whole made it pretty far in the playoffs [the Class 4A Rock Valley College Sectional championship game],” Brucato said. “It’s been nice to be able to ride that, and I think that’s a big part of it. Our team had that confidence, and that just helps with being able to shoot in the state competition.”

Eight seniors graduated from the 2015 team. For the first time in program history, Plano had two all-conference players selected, and one of them, senior Arieanna Accidentale, is back.

“They are clicking, and there are leaders who are stepping up,” Pelizza said.

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry (I think he always used his first name, too, since it did cause a moment of admiration), I had a mixed memory. Presumably, it was a Davis from another generation.

In all my years of being an instructor, dean, vice-president or shall we say a column writer, I never felt any such tone of respect. Now I wonder if my fairly obscure first name could have been modified. Perhaps the name of a virtue such as Loyal? I thought of Regal, but that’s the name of Nancy Miller’s dog ... .

By now I have read dozens and dozens of online tributes to Ron Koeppl.

I have no license to speak of him as a mentor and one who “changed my life.” So many of the tributes were, indeed, speaking of individual relationships, of lingering respect and attribution for meeting goals and finding self-worth.

We never met face to face. I once interviewed him by phone for a column and we’d stay connected.

Then I, too, caught the spark of this star of a man who has joined his beloved Gretchen.

Condolences to his family and all of you who mourn the loss of Ron Koeppl here in our community and around the world.

Earlier this week, I watched the online coverage of Nancy Reagan’s funeral.

As the camera showed images of the invited guests, I thought I saw a ghost right there in the front row. A nice looking gentleman next to the grown up Reagan children was the spitting image of Loyal Davis.

Loyal Davis, M.D., was a neurosurgeon and professor at Northwestern’s medical school and Passavant Hospital when I was a nursing student there in the 1950s. He was Nancy Reagan’s stepfather and, yes, I checked, died in the 1980s.

Almost every television drama about doctors and hospitals features an egocentric, haughty and demanding surgeon. Loyal Davis was the prototype. Our instructors warned us that he expected visible respect, such as standing in his presence.

The dominant color for all of us was gray.

Our student uniforms were a gray dress and matching pinafore and cap. Medical faculty had gray lab coats, etc.

One morning when I was sitting in a small space, facing the wall to finish my charting, I heard a male voice clearing his throat and glimpsed white shoes and gray scrub pants.

I leapt to my feet and backed away from the now open space. The janitor smiled and said it would just be a minute until he finished mopping under the desk.

Mrs. Davis, a former actress who told us to call her “Edie,” presided over a large booth in the tiny coffee and gift shop on the second floor. She loved to laugh and to share new pictures of her Nancy and Ronnie. If they were in Chicago, she brought them for coffee and to meet her people.

Rosalie Waranius Vass of Batavia has had the honor of exhibiting paintings at national and international museums.

Her highest international honors came when she was selected for the International Watercolor Biennial at the Shenzhen Museum in China and the International Small Image Exchange Exhibit at the Luohu Art Museum in China, states a news release.

An artist must be a signature member of the National Watercolor Society to enter these Chinese exhibits, and Vass has held such designation since 1989, the release states.

The Small Image show required paintings to be less than 15 inches in either dimension.

Only 100 paintings were chosen, and

Vass’ painting “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” was a prize winner, states the release.

Nearly 3,800 artists from around the world submitted work for the Shenzhen International Watercolor Biennial. Seven international judges chose 233 paintings, including Vass’ painting “Queen M & Her Golden Keep.” It is included in a tabletop book from the biennial, according to the release.

Both shows will tour various museums and galleries for a year. The Small Image tour will end at the National Watercolor Society gallery in San Pedro, California, in August.

Locally, Vass has two florals in the Norris Cultural Arts Center’s “Watercolor 16” show, taking place in St. Charles through April 9. Her artwork also is on permanent display at Gallery 28 in Geneva.

“The Day the Sun Turned Cold,” a painting by Rosalie Waranius Vass, is on display at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, through May 15. The Batavia resident currently has other paintings on exhibit in China, St. Charles and Geneva.

Fat-soluble vitamins can cause harm Dear Dr. K: When I asked my doctor about supplements, she said something about water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. What is the difference? And why does it matter?

Dear Reader: A vitamin is a natural substance that is required in small amounts for human life. As your doctor said, there are water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins.

Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water; they are packed into the watery portions of the foods you eat. Vitamin C and the B vitamins are water-soluble vitamins, for example.

Water-soluble vitamins have many tasks in the body. They are involved in energy production; they help cells multiply; and they make collagen, which knits together wounds, supports blood vessel walls and forms a base for teeth and bones.

These vitamins are absorbed directly from the digestive tract into the bloodstream. They travel to all parts of your body that contain water – and that means all parts of your body. Every one of the 13 trillion cells in our body contains water.

And the space between those cells contains water, too – as, of course, does the blood.

Your kidneys continuously regulate levels of water-soluble vitamins. They eliminate the excess out of the body in your urine. For this reason, the risk of harm from consuming large amounts of water-soluble vitamin supplements is relatively small.

The fat-soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E and K. They keep many parts of your body in good repair. They are essential for bone formation; they protect your vision; and they protect your cells and DNA against damage from unstable molecules.

Fat-soluble vitamins enter the bloodstream through channels in the wall of the intestine. However, because they dissolve

Fat-soluble vitamins get stored in fat tissues and the liver. Your body squirrels away any excess you consume and doles it out gradually to meet your needs.

Because these vitamins are stored for long periods, however, dangerous levels can build up. As a result, excessive intake of fat-soluble vitamins is more likely to cause you harm than taking too many water-soluble vitamin supplements.

A dangerous overdose is most likely to happen if you take high doses of a vitamin supplement over a prolonged period of time. It’s very rare to get too much of any vitamin just from food, but it can happen.

As a medical student, I saw a young woman who had an obsessive desire to eat carrots. Lots of carrots. Carrots contain chemicals called carotenes that are transformed into vitamin A in the body.

Her skin and the whites of her eyes were slightly but definitely orange. With several months off her unusual diet, the orange hue disappeared. Fortunately, she suffered no health problems.

It might be joining the two of you on dates makes her feel like a third wheel. Stop trying to organize those for a while and get together with Megan one-on-one.

Make her understand you value her friendship and will not let it end because she’s angry at Zack, but by no means do you intend to choose her over Zack.

Sooner or later, she will come to her senses. Give it time. Don’t push her to reconcile with Zack.

She might do so when she begins to feel better about herself.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY was in a six-year relationship Jeanne with a woman.

Phillips We shared a home and have a child together, whom I support. She has primary custody, and I provide financial support and exercise my visitations regularly.

We broke up six months ago, and she immediately moved a man into the house. Since they split up, she has done this again with a new person.

I have moved on and am content being single and focusing on my career and parenting my son when he’s with me. Where I struggle is when these new men want to meet me. I don’t feel obligated to shake their hands, be polite and friendly or be a supportive, smiling face.

I’m disturbed by the speed she moves into other relationships. I feel like it sets a bad example for my son regardless of how “nice” these men are. There is no record of abuse, and I do believe my ex is a good mother, just maybe lonely and very dependent on having companionship.

I understand life goes on and people move on, but at what point is this unhealthy? Am I wrong for not wanting to be friends with my ex and her new “guy friend” whenever she decides she should be accompanied for custody exchange? I refuse to speak to or acknowledge these men. I am not confrontational, but I literally have nothing to say. You don’t have to approve of your ex’s boyfriends, but it is in your child’s best interest to maintain a relationship that approximates cordiality. When we can’t change something, sometimes we have to accept it – and that’s what you would be wise to do.

But Stober noticed that she could win 11 tricks by ruffing a very rare four times in her own hand. She won the first trick on the board, cashed the spade ace, ruffed a spade with the heart five, played a diamond to the ace, ruffed another spade, overtook the club jack with dummy’s queen, ruffed a third spade, crossed to the club ace, ruffed the now-high spade seven, and had two top trumps on the board. It was a beautiful dummy reversal.
