Road maintenance plans get green light in Elburn ELBURN – The Elburn Village Board on Monday night unanimously approved a plan for significant roadwork projects to get underway.

John Nevenhoven, Elburn’s public works director, said the work is to be done on nine projects, including some in the downtown area.

According to documents provided by the village, the cost will be $460,000, which would come from motor fuel tax funds. Nevenhoven said he did not know when the work might begin.

Nevenhoven said the work will be done at: • Oak Street, from First Street to the end of the street.

• First Street, from Swain Street to Oak Street.

• Swain Street, from Filmore Street to Route 47.

• Shannon Street, from Route 47 to Read Street.

• Read Street, from North Street to Reader Street.

• Birch Street, from First Street to the end of the street.

• Prairie Valley Street, from Route 47 to First Street.

• First Street, from Route 38 north to the driveway.

• An alley, from North Street to the north side of the American Legion building in downtown Elburn.

Police: Man faces charges after pistol falls from pants in STC bar

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An Elgin man whose pistol fell from his pants when he stood in a St. Charles bar faces charges related to having a concealed firearm, according to a St. Charles police report.

Police responded to Ray’s Evergreen Tavern, 1400 W. Main St., about 7:25 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told police that Vincent Vincent Papa Papa had been in the establishment for “some time” when he stood, turned around to walk outside and had a pistol fall from his pants to the floor, police reported.

Upon seeing the firearm fall, a retired Wayne police officer who was there quickly got up to make sure that nobody but Papa reached for the weapon, police reported.

The report indicated the retired officer feared “things could go wrong” if others

tried to secure the gun as Papa reached for it.

Papa reportedly walked outside with the pistol, which later was identified as a Beretta Pietro, and put it in his vehicle.

Employees then approached Papa and asked for his keys because he was in “no shape to drive,” prompting him to call his wife for a ride, according to the report.

Police arrived soon afterward and secured the firearm, which had a fully loaded magazine, police reported. Police noted there was not a round chambered in the weapon.

Papa, 58, of the 0-100 block of North Crystal Street, was charged with possession of a concealed firearm while under the influence of alcohol and possession of a concealed firearm in prohibited areas.

He is expected in Kane County Branch Court on April 16.

Papa was released on his own recognizance and was told he could pick up his firearm after a 12-hour waiting period, police reported.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla a wayside horn maintenance plan. Village Administrator Erin Willrett said the contract with Elburn-based Leyden Electric needed to be formalized.

Leyden had been providing the service at a cost of $98.94 an hour since 2009, according to village documents. The wayside horns are devices that blast a noise similar to locomotive horns, but they are aimed at vehicles and pedestrians at rail crossings. According to the village’s website, the horns are put in place “to alleviate

much of the noise associated with train whistles.”

The contract with Leyden calls for the company to provide 10 inspections a year and two semiannual inspections. The maintenance is done at two crossings – at First Street and at Route 47.

Documents indicated that inspections take four hours and require one technician.

The semiannual inspections require two technicians.

The cost will be $102.21 an hour for 2015, and it will go up to $105.28 in 2016, $108.44 in 2017, $111.69 in 2018 and $115.04 in 2019.

No illnesses had been linked to the recalled products as of early Tuesday but they were distributed to Trader Joe’s stores nationwide. Visit www.fda.gov/

Safety/Recalls for a list of the recalled products, which were packaged in clear plastic bags with UPC codes on the back.

Plans to update Batavia’s website moving forward New website set to debut in June

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – City officials are taking steps to make Batavia’s website more attractive and easier to use.

Aldermen in December approved a contract with Kansas-based CivicPlus to design and host its website. As proposed, the contract would not exceed $36,000.

Jennifer Balonek, of CivicPlus, updated aldermen about the project at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting. She told them the new

website is set to go live on June 16.

“Once it goes live, it is only the beginning,” Balonek said.

“It will always be changing.”

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said he wanted to make sure that video could be incorporated on the new website.

Howard Chason, information systems director for the city, replied that the new website could include video.

“It’s a very flexible system,” Chason said.

First Ward Alderman Carl Fischer asked if city staff would be able to easily update

content on the new website.

Balonek said changing content on the new site will be easier.

“This is going to make their day to day life more efficient,” Balonek said. “It is very user friendly.”

Chason told aldermen last year that the current website was designed by the city’s information systems department and it is more than nine years old. The site was last updated five years ago, he said.

According to Chason, CivicPlus has more than 1,700 government clients, including the cities of Geneva and Elgin.

The company last year updated Lockport’s website.

Bill Foster giving U.S. Senate run consideration SHAW MEDIA U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, has announced he is giving serious consideration to running for U.S. Senate.

In a statement released Tuesday, Foster said he believes voters deserve a strong alternative to Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk.

Earlier this week, Kirk reportedly held a Chicago fundraiser for Republican leaders in connection with his re-election campaign.

“Just recently, with his signature on the incredibly irresponsible letter to the government of Iran, we’ve seen Sen. Kirk put his own politics ahead of the interests

of our state and our country,” Foster said in the statement. “It’s time Sen. Kirk is replaced with someone who will put Illinois first.”

There has been speculation Foster would seek an opportunity to run against Kirk, though earlier this month a Foster spokesperson declined to discuss a possible 2016 run, according to previously published reports.

Other potential Democratic party contenders for Kirk’s seat include U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos of East Moline, U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth of Hoffman Estates, state Sen. Napoleon Harris of Harvey and U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly of Matteson, according to previous published reports.

Defense plans to appeal guilty verdict for Shadwick King

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com An attorney for a Geneva man found guilty of killing his wife said Tuesday she plans to eventually appeal his case.

Shadwick King, 47, was convicted Monday night of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen, 32. Jurors took about five-and-a-half hours to deliberate, starting sometime after 4 p.m. Monday.

“It’s a case I so strongly believe in, and it was a very big disappointment,” Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress wrote in an email Tuesday. “We do expect to appeal, but at this point, the balance of the trial court proceedings need to run their course.”

Those proceedings include Shadwick King’s sentencing hearing scheduled for May 6. He faces between 20 and 60 years in an Illinois prison, according to sentencing guidelines in the current state statute.

tion. He has been held in the Kane County Jail since July 8 on a $1.5 million bond, which was revoked upon conviction.

Shadwick King was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife. His defense claimed Kathleen King left her home July 6 to go running or walking and died of natural causes because of sudden cardiac arrhythmia.

Prosecutors argued Shadwick King manually strangled his wife, changed her clothes and left her body partially on railroad tracks less than a half-mile from the King’s home on Geneva’s east side.

As a court clerk Monday evening read the verdict for the jury, Kathleen King’s family members began to cry.

Relatives of Kathleen King, speaking through a victim advocate at the judicial center, said they did not wish to comment at this time.

as they left the third floor, including Shadwick King’s father, who declined to comment.

After the verdict, Judge James Hallock thanked the jury members for their service.

“Thank you … this has been a long trial,” Hallock said to the jury.

In a news release, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon stated it was “a classic case of domestic violence.”

“When we charged Mr. King with murder, I promised that our office would vigorously pursue justice for Kathleen and her family and friends, and the Geneva community,” McMahon stated in the release. “Although we have done that, we cannot erase the emptiness that her friends, family, and particularly her children will continue to feel going forward. It is not lost on us that Kathleen’s children will now grow up without their parents. That is at least as great a tragedy as Kathleen’s murder.”

Joseph Alan Marin, 33, of the 11N700 block of Howard Avenue, and Shayna R. Shayna R. Gillingham, Gillingham 27, of the 300 block of North Fifth Street, both were charged Friday with two

counts of felony retail theft.

On March 6, a loss prevention employee at Target, 3885 E. Main St., reportedly told St. Charles police a man and a woman were visiting several area Target stores, stealing electronics.

They were known to get a cart and put clothing and other merchandise in it to conceal the electronics before disabling the items’ security devices out of view from security cameras, according to the report.

The pair would place the electronics in their pockets and leave the store without making any purchases, police reported.

On March 2, they stole $758.97 in merchandise, including two navigation systems and a speaker, police reported. Three days later, they reportedly took $1,067.97 in electronics, including headphones and a

camera.

According to the report, Gillingham pawned most of the items at a shop in Aurora, but police were able to retrieve the electronics.

The report indicated Marin and Gillingham were suspects in similar cases in Elgin, South Elgin and North Aurora.

Kane County court records show they already face charges from a case involving the Batavia Target.

Gillingham was charged with felony retail theft for a March 5 incident, and Marin was charged with felony possession of burglary tools, felony burglary and two counts of felony retail theft for incidents on Feb. 27 and March 5.

Online records from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office indicated they remained in custody Tuesday afternoon.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 21-yearold St. Charles man faces criminal charges after a police officer caught him with heroin in a downtown parking garage, according to a St. Charles police report.

D y l a n T. Tucker, of the 1400 block of Madison Avenue, was charged Dylan T. Tucker Thursday with felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

About 4:25 p.m., an officer driving through the parking deck at 100 Illinois St. confronted Tucker after spotting him in a Dodge Neon with a black cord wrapped tightly around his elbow and a syringe in hand, according to the report.

The report indicated that the substance in Tucker’s possession later was identified as heroin.

Tucker, who ignored the officer’s repeated orders to drop the syringe, told police that an arrest would “ruin his life” and his chance to participate in a deferred prosecution program, according to the report.

He contested the arrest because he never injected the drug, police reported, noting Tucker also said he wanted to use heroin one more time before having to get regular drug tests.

According to Kane County court records, Tucker pleaded guilty in February to a misdemeanor theft charge from 2014 and faces drug-related charges from August 2014: felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic syringe or needle, a misdemeanor.

He is expected in court March 24.

District 304 hopefuls discuss enrollment, expansion

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Differences and similarities among six hopefuls in the race for Geneva District 304 took center stage this week during a candidate forum hosted by the Geneva High School Student Council.

Incumbents Mary Stith and Kelly Nowak and newcomers Tina Yagla, Ann Murtaugh, Taylor Egan and Evelyn Schneider fielded questions Monday night at Williamsburg Elementary School. Incumbent Michael McCormick said he could not attend because of work obligations.

The seven candidates are on the April 7 consolidated election ballot. Three four-year terms are available.

Regarding the district’s enrollment, Nowak and Stith said the board had considered and rejected an expansion of the high school in 2007-08.

“I voted against that expansion because I did not think we needed one at that time,” Nowak said.

“We had an economic decline, and it was definitely a good thing that we did not invest in that,” Stith said.

Murtaugh and Yagla said the district’s enrollment is decreasing.

Stith agreed the student population is going down, but “delivery of education requires a lot more space” because of the need to meet social and emotional needs of students.

Yagla said she noted overcrowding in the high school is a concern, but not before being careful about expansion.

“We do not want to get ourselves into another situation, where we had some questionable numbers used in the last referendum when we built the

new schools that we are still paying for today,” Yagla said.

Yagla was referring to the 2007 referendum for $80 million to build two new schools.

A controversy followed in 2012, when a tax watchdog group compared the district’s enrollment numbers with those provided by a demographer.

District 304 officials said at the time they had no record of who was responsible for the numbers included in its campaign literature.

Schneider said enrollment trends can shift.

“It ends up being steady over 10 years and then shifts again,”

Schneider said. “How do we use the space we have now in the best and most appropriate manner?”

As to crowded hallways at the high school, Schneider said officials should look at creative ways to use existing space before looking to build new.

Egan said the district created more space based on growth expectations.

“Now our job is to creatively use that space,” Egan said.

“From 2011 to 2014, the variation is 100 students over nine schools.”

Though he could not attend the forum, McCormick later

said he was aware of the high school crowding situation.

“Three of my five kids are at the school now, and I’ve heard harrowing tales of the hallway,” McCormick said.

McCormick said he agreed officials should make creative use of space.

“I would like to work with Principal [Tom] Rogers and rank-and-file teachers” McCormick said. “Is there a better way to use the capacity we have, and make it affordable but feasible for our teachers and teaching methods?”

The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County will host a forum for both school and aldermanic races at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kane County Branch Court, 530 Randall Road, St. Charles.

Jim Oberweis, Keith Wheeler to host town hall meeting

Wheeler said he will discuss his work on House Bill 390, which would increase school funding by $500 million.

“It came from a campaign promise that we would mandate that the state fully fund general state aid to local school districts,” Wheeler said. “Over the last three years, they have prorated the amount which, in turn, requires local school districts either to not spend that money … or to levy additional local property taxes.”

General state aid is $6,199 a student, Wheeler said. Gov. Bruce Rauner proposed hav-

ing it be 95 percent, and his bill would bump it to 100 percent after that.

“If we are going to have a real solution for property tax relief, this would be a good first step,” Wheeler said.

Another initiative is House Bill 1561, which would have the state board of elections provide nominating petitions online for candidates to make it harder to challenge them over using the wrong form, Wheeler said.

“It would make them bulletproof from being thrown off the ballot for a petition technicality,” Wheeler said.

For example, Wheeler said the petition challenges in the Kaneland District 302 race, which had been based on candidates using the wrong form, were “ridiculous.”

The Kane County Elector-

al Board kept the challenged candidates on the ballot.

“Choosing the wrong petition form as a reason you cannot be a candidate for that office – to me – is ridiculous,” Wheeler said.

He said this would not change challenges to signatures on nominating petitions.

“Good people, who want to serve their community, should be able to do so, knowing they are not going to get thrown off due to a technicality for the structure of a petition … or spend hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars to defend themselves,” Wheeler said.

In addition to discussing his aim to make selling cars on Sunday legal again, Oberweis said he would be discussing the state’s finances.

Oberweis also will discuss the reform to eliminate or reduce bogus lawsuits and workers compensation reform.

“You shouldn’t be able to sue for $30 million because you spilled hot coffee on yourself,” Oberweis said.

“Illinois has the third- or fourth-highest cost worker compensation system in the country. We have to be more in line with our neighbors.”

Oberweis said he also was working on a proposal for “worker empowerment zones” where counties or cities can have a resolution that does not force workers to join a union if they don’t want to.

“We also think there needs to be a reduction or limits on unfunded mandates that drive up costs,” Oberweis said.

MAPLE PARK – The Wiltse family is one that farms together – something it has been doing for 50 years.

Wiltse’s Farm Produce, which is at 50W379 Route 38 near Maple Park, is celebrating 50 years in business.

The farm was started in 1965 by Marie Wiltse and her husband, Jerome “Red” Wiltse, who died in October 1986.

Patty Marco and her siblings, Kate Wiltse and Joseph Wiltse, run the farm with their mother.

Marco said their mother still is very much part of the operation.

“Once a farmer, always a farmer,” she said. “She’s done a lot with what she was dealt.”

In addition to the farm

weather. The farm stays open through the end of October or early November, weather permitting, Marco said.

Marco said she likes talking to people about what the family does.

“I enjoy talking to the people about our business, talking to the people about agricultural,” she said. “We want to keep them informed.”

Despite advances in technology, Marco said farming still is very labor intensive.

“We’re using some equipment that my grandmother used,” she said. “Our potato digger is something that my grandmother used when she was doing it in Batavia.

There’s some modern stuff, but there’s still a lot of handson stuff.”

She said it’s likely those who visit Wiltse’s Farm will see produce they won’t see at

Do you remember what it was like to be a teenager?

Looking back, I can confidently say my adolescent years were some of the best of my life. My teenage years in Geneva were spent taking dance classes, enjoying ice cream cones at Graham’s and wandering Third Street with my friends.

I drove my father’s car, which was fully insured and fueled by my father.

My rent-free bedroom even came with its very own chef and maid – my mother.

But if you asked a 16-year-old me what I thought about being a teenager, my answer would have been very different.

“Ugh, like you’d even understand,” I’d groan with an eye roll. Back then, even the smallest of troubles meant major drama.

At 22 years old, it wasn’t too long ago that Geneva Park District’s new Teen Program coordinator, Becky Densmore, was a teenager herself.

“I can remember feeling awkward and wanting to get away from my parents,” Densmore said. “But mostly I just wanted a place to hang out with my friends.”

She believes her new programming will provide them with destinations beyond the mall and movie theater.

“We took a survey to find out what pre-teens and teens are interested in.

From there, I developed a wider variety of activities to keep kids active and engaged while having fun with friends and building independence,” Densmore said. “I wanted to present them with unique opportunities to connect with kids their age and try something new.”

The second leading cancer killer in the United States of men and women, is colorectal cancer according to recent studies of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. But with regular screenings of individuals ages 50 and older, 60% of deaths from this cancer could be avoided. You might be at a higher risk for colorectal cancer if: you or a close relative have had colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer; you have inflammatory bowel disease or you have a genetic syndrome such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer.

How can the screening save your life? Colorectal cancer usually starts in a growth called polyps in the colon or rectum.

The screening tests can find the polyps so they can be removed before they turn cancerous. According to the American Cancer Society, it can take up to 15 years for polyps to develop into colorectal cancer. When col-

orectal cancer is found early the chance of being cured is good.

The screenings recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force include high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy. Your primary care physician can explain which test would be right for you. The frequency of the screening will depend on which test is used and if you are a higher risk for colorectal cancer. Unfortunately only about 50% of individuals eligible for colorectal screenings get the test they should. Reasons for this can be due to lack of public and health professional awareness of screening options, financial barriers, and inadequate health insurance coverage and/ or benefits.

Irish Sisters in Geneva to close after 28 years

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Irish Sisters Imports is closing after 28 years, co-owner Mike Smith said. The store is at 312 S. Third St., Geneva.

With the lease up at the end of April, Smith said it was time to let the store go.

“We could not sign another three-year lease,” Smith said. “We had been kind of thinking about [closing] for a while. The thought of another two or three years here – we don’t want to do it.”

The store features knit sweaters, Irish caps, crystal and jewelry, among other items.

“All kinds of little goodies, most of which is made in Ireland,” Smith said. “I hate to see it go.”

Everything is for sale, including the fixtures.

The store has been at the location since 1987, but Smith said he and his wife, Peggy, have owned it for about 13 years.

There was another Irish sister, but she left for a job that included health insurance benefits, he said.

Irish Sisters Imports in Geneva will be closing after 28 years in business on Third Street.

“We could sell the business, but we didn’t try,” Smith said. “It’s trying to catch lightning in the bottle, waiting for the one person who wants it.”

Smith said he and his wife put out feelers a few years ago to see if anyone was interested.

“We could not come to a meeting of the minds,” Smith said of the few who came forward.

Smith said he would not be opposed to selling the

business if a potential buyer walked in and made an offer.

Although they both are old enough to retire, Smith said he and his wife would continue to sell Irish items at fairs and festivals and be not-quite retired – still working, but less demanding than keeping up the store every day.

“Closing the store is going to free up some time for ourselves,” Smith said. “We are not quite ready to retire. We worked our whole lives.”

ELBURN – Thomas Reynolds is the current president of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District.

He has served more than 10 years on the board and touts his years of experience and leadership.

Joel Rissman is a parttime firefighter for the district and a full-time firefighter for the Fermilab district.

He said he never has run for office before, but he said he brings a fresh perspective as a firefighter and business owner.

Rissman and Reynolds will vie for one available seat on the fire district’s board in the April 7 election. The winner will serve a sixyear term.

He said he has a good idea of what is needed and what isn’t needed. He also said he had not “really seen or heard a strategic plan” in eight years of working at the district.

“What are our plans?” he said. “For me, I want to see a strategic plan – one to three [years], three to five and a long-term [plan] … so taxpayers also know what we are putting money aside for.”

Rissman said he would bring a fresh perspective.

“Someone who is a firefighter and a taxpayer and also works for that company can bring a lot to the table,” Rissman said.

We need to change the cultural conversation and heighten women’s interest in STEM careers by presenting more female role models and exposing students to the vast opportunities available in these fields.

That’s one of the goals of Waubonsee Community College’s Women in STEM Fest.

We hope to show young women that STEM fields are for everyone and there is creative and interesting

work being done by women in STEM – from engineering mirrors for space travel and telescopes, to discovering new species and illustrating medical journals and textbooks.

For the young men who attend, we hope to nurture a high level of respect for the women they will eventually encounter in the STEM workplace.

This year’s Women in STEM Fest will be April 1 and 2. Given that many local schools are on spring break that week, we hope high school and junior high students will have the chance to attend. Studies show by seventh grade, girls’ interest in STEM falls precipitously, but we can help reverse that trend, through events like Women in STEM, but also by delivering another import-

ant message – that being successful in any field is about hard work, and a person’s ability is directly proportional to the amount of time and effort he or she puts forth.

Therefore, we enthusiastically invite you to the second Women in STEM Fest at Waubonsee Community College from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 1 and April 2, in Room 106 of the Student Center on the Sugar Grove Campus. Come and get your STEM on!

Why is it important to get more women into science, technology, engineering and mathematics – or STEM? Many reasons!

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women are now earning a larger proportion of college degrees than men, yet they make up only 26 percent of the STEM workforce.

STEM jobs are generally well-paying jobs, and research shows when women in a society are financially independent and stable, the society as a whole does better.

Part of the challenge is a lack of role models. In my own education, I had but a handful of female STEM role models: a high school biology teacher, a high school chemistry and physics teacher (a product of attending a high school run

Batavia approves three-year union deal

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council on Monday night approved union agreements with the city’s police officers, police sergeants and street department employees.

As part of the new threeyear agreement with the police officers, they will see their salaries increase 2.5 percent the first and second years of the contract and 3 percent the third year, City Administrator Bill McGrath wrote to aldermen and Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke in a memo.

“While a bit higher than inflation, we are still in the area of our compensation policy, being the median of comparable communities, and still attracting good candidates,” McGrath wrote in the memo.

The agreement with the police officers also includes the creation of a master patrol officer position. The new position comes with a stipend.

As part of their agreements, police sergeants and street department employees also will see their salaries increase 2.5 percent the first and second years of their contracts and 3 percent the third year.

The contract with the sergeants also will include the creation of a master sergeant position, with a stipend. As part of the contract with the street department employees, the city created an opportunity for people to become certified arborists if and when they are needed, along with the establishment of a labor management committee.

Hassle-free registration THE WASHINGTON POST Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed into law a remarkable reform Monday that will sweep away one of the greatest barriers to the ballot box – the gratuitously complicated, opt-in voter registration process.

While much of the country is making voting more difficult, Oregon is pushing forward with innovative voting reform that should be universally praised.

Other states – or, better yet, federal standards – should follow. Oregon’s new law assigns the state more responsibility to keep voter rolls complete and accurate, taking much of the burden off individuals.

Oregonians who meet voting eligibility rules will be automatically registered to vote when they get drivers licenses or personal ID cards. The state Department of Transportation already collects all the basic information needed to register people – legal name, age, residence, citizenship information and electronic signature. It also regularly collects change of address information. Why not share all of that with the state officials responsible for keeping the voter rolls? It’s an obvious move. Yet in doing so, Oregon becomes a national leader.

Oregonians still will be able to decline registration. State election officials must send all automatically registered voters a card asking if they would prefer to stay off the rolls. But making voter registration opt-out rather than opt-in is long overdue: Behavioral research shows that people tend to participate in all sorts of valuable programs at higher rates when they have to go out of their way to leave rather than join. Oregon expects to register 300,000 of its 800,000 unregistered residents immediately, and thousands more as the system phases in. There’s no good case for making people go through the hassle of traditional, opt-in registration simply to exercise the fundamental right to vote.

The new system won’t be perfect. As the continuing national fracas over voter ID laws has revealed, many poor and minority voters lack state-issued identification, and they could fall through cracks in Oregon’s automatic registration. On the other hand, that issue might fade over time, as those who lack ID tend to be older. And Oregon could expand the reform later, increasing information sharing from more state agencies. Meanwhile, one of the biggest problems with voter registration rolls is that people move and don’t update their addresses. In Oregon, change of address information sent to the Department of Transportation will get passed on to election officials. But to fully solve the problem, officials may need to allow address changes to be reported on Election Day or permit people to vote at any polling station.

Republican-led states that have been erecting new barriers to voting should instead look to Oregon’s example. So should Congress, which has broad powers under the Constitution to regulate voting in federal elections and could begin pushing states in the right direction.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ROOTING OUT MEDICARE, MEDICAID FRAUD, ABUSE To the Editor: This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Medicare and Medicaid social safety net programs. More than 50 million disabled Americans and seniors rely on Medicare for their health coverage. Medicaid offers health care coverage to millions of low-income Americans.

But these safety nets suffer from troubling problems, including rampant waste, fraud and abuse. Scammers and fraudsters have targeted these programs for exploitation and personal gain – and have succeeded in many cases.

For example, according to the Government Accountability Office, improper Medicare payments are on an upward trend.

Putting these programs on sound fiscal footing and protecting our seniors and the disabled requires rooting out weaknesses that potential scammers can exploit.

To protect taxpayers – who are on the hook for such waste, fraud and abuse – I have cosponsored the Preventing and Reducing Improper Medicare and Medicaid Expenditures Act of 2015, a bipartisan bill

This bill targets some of the root causes that make these programs vulnerable to abuse.

For instance, it phases out the antiquated “Pay-and-Chase” system by better incentivizing Medicare administrative contractors, who are the first line of defense against fraudulent claims.

Many times Medicare thieves pretend to be doctors – sometimes deceased doctors – to receive improper payments. The PRIME Act demands that the Department of Health and Human Services enhance federal and state Medicare and Medicaid data-matching to ensure that databases are consistent for both bad actors and unreported deaths. The bill also goes after bad actors by creating stiffer penalties for fraudulent use of patient or provider identities.

Further, it encourages seniors and

other beneficiaries to report possible fraud and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid by building on and expanding the Senior Medicare Patrol program.

There’s no doubt the larger burden these programs and their mandatory spending place on our national debt requires large-scale reforms, and I support improvements that put these programs on sound fiscal footing, while not changing benefits for those 55 years or older.

Until then, bipartisan legislation like the PRIME Act will stop people from taking advantage of these programs and improve their efficiency and transparency.

A pulse and sanity might well have applied as missing possessions, but the Vikings instead grabbed hold of their warm-up tops.

They’ll need them again this weekend when the program makes its first state tournament appearance since 1963.

Geneva downed Lake Park, 57-52, in double overtime in a Class 4A NIU Supersectional destined to live long in Vikings lore. The Lancers’ Marcus McDaniel hit a buzzer-beating 3 off an inbounds feed with half a second left in the first overtime to force a second, but the Vikings closed the game behind a 21 for 29 effort from the free throw line.

“It’s a privilege and an honor to be known as one of the best Geneva basketball teams,” senior guard Daniel Santacaterina said. “That really makes us proud.”

Geneva (30-3) will keep searching for superlatives Friday at the Peoria Civic Center.

The Vikings will face Normal in a state semifinal at about 8:15 p.m.

Geneva took the floor to the sounds of Joe Esposito’s “You’re the Best Around” blaring over the loudspeaker. Once the game started, the theme from “The Karate Kid” yielded to the principles of another mid-1980s sports movie staple.

To be sure, Lake Park’s pass-happy offense would have delighted “Hoosiers” coach Norman Dale. The Lancers whipped the ball around nine times on their first possession before referees whistled Geneva senior wing Nate Navigato for the game’s first foul after 30 seconds.

Geneva’s Blue Crue student section – which boasted many members in special cus-

tom green T-shirts on St. Patrick’s Day – chanted “THIS IS BORING!” at times. Still, they couldn’t deny the strategy’s effectiveness.

Lake Park, which held three of its first four postseason opponents in the 30s, moved in tandem with the Vikings, making each shot tough.

“The utmost respect for them,” Vikings senior guard Pace Temple said. “They came

in, and it was kind of a game of chess. They run their offense and they’re very, very patient and they take shots. ... It really came down to less of us trying to impact them and us trusting our own stuff.”

Lancers senior forward Cameron Van Aswegen embodied the team’s defensive tenacity as he matched up against the Buffalo-bound Navigato, who at 6-foot-7 boasted a four-inch height advantage on his Lake Park counterpart.

Through three quarters, Navigato, the Vikings’ leading scorer, had just five points on 2 of 6 shooting. Lake Park entered the fourth with a 31-25 lead when Tim Weiss drilled a buzzer-beating 3 at the third quarter buzzer in a prelude to McDaniel’s heroics.

Navigato responded in the final stages, scoring 11 points the rest of the way to finish with a team-best 16 – one more than junior post Loudon Vollbrecht, who added eight rebounds.

Navigato finished 5 for 11 from the field and was 5 for 7 from the free throw line, the product of aggressive moves to the basket in crunch time.

“Being a senior,” he said, “I feel like I owe it to my teammates to do that.”

Van Aswegen fouled out in the second overtime after giving Navigato all he could handle.

DeKALB – You watch enough basketball, and you hear the cliches from broadcasters all the time. “Twenty seconds to play is an eternity!” “Ten seconds is a ton of time!” “Five seconds gives you a lot of options.”

But half a second, a lot of time? Never heard that one before.

Half a second is barely enough time for a tip, let alone to hoist a deep 3-point attempt with any semblance of accuracy.

Inexplicably, Lake Park’s Marcus McDaniel drained a 3-pointer off an out-of-bounds pass with .5 showing on the Convocation Center scoreboard at Northern Illinois University. The once-in-alifetime heave tied the score of Tuesday’s supersectional between Geneva and Lake Park at 45 at the end of the first overtime.

Not quite as incredible as the shot but ultimately more consequential was Geneva’s reaction.

Rather than seethe at the officials for counting the shot or devolve into a panicked pity party, the Vikings swiftly collected themselves and played 4 minutes of winning basketball in double overtime, scoring a 57-52, double-OT win to punch their ticket to Friday’s Class 4A state semifinal against Normal at the Peoria Civic Center.

“You’re half a second away from winning, from going to state, and he hit that shot,” Geneva senior guard Pace Temple said. “Incredible shot. But we got to the bench, and everybody was just like ‘Alright, of course it went in.’ The way the game was going, it had to go in.

“We were able to rebound and focus, relax and we really came out and dictated the pace of that second overtime and really handled our business. That’s a credit to coach, that’s a credit to Nate [Navigato] and everybody on that squad just being able

Vikings fans, understandably, were stunned the shot counted. After Geneva guard Daniel Santacaterina batted the ball out of bounds, leaving the Lancers with half a tick to go, you couldn’t have blamed Geneva assistant and head football coach Rob Wicinski for calling for the victory formation.

But once the ball rippled the net, amid confusion at the scorer’s table, euphoric screams from Lancer-backers and howls of disbelief from Geneva fans, the Vikings tuned it all out.

“They hit that shot, and it was an incredible shot, I mean props to him, but we had to get mentally ready just like we did,” Navigato said. “We knew coming into that next [overtime] there was no way we were going to lose this game. I had full confidence in every one of our teammates.”

Big man Loudon Vollbrecht put Geneva up to start the second OT with a pair of free throws, and after Lake Park took its lone lead of the session on a Danny Hynes 3-pointer, there was Navigato, shaking off a relatively off-night with another memorable three-point play, this one putting the Vikes up for good at 50-48 with 1:41 to go.

The Lancers fought admirably to the finish, but in a long night of basketball, credit Geneva’s response at the start of double OT as most significant in the Vikings’ Phil Ralston historic win.

Factoring in a critical technical foul on Lake Park in the final minute of OT for calling a timeout with none remaining, it was one of those impossible to fathom games that made your brain hurt, your head spin and, if you’re a Geneva Viking, your heart sing.

The first indications this night was going to be anything but normal came from, well Normal, as scoreboard-watching/Twitter-scrolling fans learned that mighty Simeon was falling to Normal at the Illinois State University Supersectional.

Normal is an excellent

team, but that opened up a more favorable possibility for Friday’s state semifinal draw.

The trouble is, Geneva still had plenty of work to do, tied 17-all at halftime with the Lancers.

The second half wasn’t any smoother against a disciplined Lake Park squad that seemed determined to beat Geneva at its own game.

These guys made the half court-oriented Vikings look like the Showtime Lakers.

But if Geneva fans were occasionally shouting “Boring!” early, nobody left the stadium without a racing pulse by game’s end.

Through it all, the Vikings kept their heads.

And they earned the right to count the seconds until tipoff Friday in Peoria.

Strikers’ streak 25 years and counting

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Strikers Fox Valley is celebrating its 25th year of club soccer in the area, withstanding economic downturns, facility challenges and an increasingly crowded market for travel soccer.

The Strikers’ president, Pat Feulner, has been there for all but one of the Strikers’ 25 years, and considers the program’s longevity one of its greatest assets.

“In soccer, it’s very similar to business – you build your résumé as you go,” Feulner said.

“It’s kind of funny to think of it that way, but realistically as you play in these showcase tournaments year after year and as the tournaments get to know you and know your club and the level of competition you play at, your résumé builds. We’ve built our résumé now to where we’re regionally and nationally known.”

Nonetheless, the Tri-Cities remains the Strikers’ home base and most fertile ground for attracting players. Feulner said Strikers founders Ed Felber, Kip Deist and the late John Markuson set up the club to give Batavia and Geneva youth soccer players an alternative to what was then called St. Charles Soccer Club (now Campton United).

The Strikers quickly branched out, though, and now many of the club’s estimated 600 players on 36 teams come from throughout the Tri-Cities and surrounding area, with a substantial chunk of players funneling in from DuPage County. The Strikers have age group teams ranging from 8 to 23.

In the Strikers’ early years, the organization used a hodgepodge of local fields – including Primrose Farm Park in St. Charles, Good Templar and Burgess Norton parks in Geneva and Engstrom Park in Batavia – for training sessions.

The Strikers, though, have settled in for the past 10 years at their indoor training facility on Kirk Road in Geneva and outdoor set-up at East Side Sports Complex in St. Charles, while still using smaller fields

as needed, especially at the younger age groups.

A core group of longtime Strikers stalwarts – including Feulner, director of coaching Kevin Ward, technical director Greg Fink, facilities director Dave King, goalkeepers coach Bill Andrews and others prominent instructors, such as Matt Polovin and the husband-wife duo of Jim and Amy Winslow, have allowed the Strikers to function with a stable base.

The Strikers have more than 80 alumni competing collegiately at more than 50 colleges, ranging from Division

I to lower levels, according to Mary Strauss, the program’s marketing director.

“I think our training philosophy and curriculum we have really stands out in that our players end up being successful, however you want to define successful,” Ward said.

“I think you’ll find most of the top soccer players in the area have links back to us on both the boys side and girls side.”

Ward said he takes pride in the Strikers’ willingness to nurture players over the long haul rather than expecting too much in the early stages of a

player’s development. He said the Strikers’ well-rounded approach yields favorable results.

“It’s pretty easy to see that we take kind of a comprehensive or holistic view of a soccer player, probably as close to an academy situation as you can get,” Ward said. “We have classroom settings, we have the field, we also have what we call our strength and core areas that really help benefit our kids from age 13 years and up and help build the total player.”

Feulner, former high school girls soccer coach at St. Charles East and Metea Valley, said the Strikers had between 800 and 900 players in the program about five years ago but considers the current, program-wide head count a healthier scenario.

“We were outgrowing our means,” Feulner said. “We just didn’t have enough [resources] to train that many teams, to find qualified, good coaches for that many teams. It was a real struggle, so we actually cut back a little bit on what we were doing. The economy helped us out a little bit because people were obviously

spending their money on other things than traveling soccer, but we’re right around the level where we really need to be.

We operate best around 600 to 700 kids and 36 to 40 teams or so.”

That does not take into account one of the Strikers’ newer initiatives, the Lewis Academy, which reaches out to players as young as age 5.

Gina Crampton is the mother of Strikers defender Kyle Crampton, a freshman at Geneva High School. The family moved from Utah in 2009 and after surveying the local soccer landscape for a couple years, decided the Strikers would be an ideal fit for Kyle.

“For me, it was just an impression I had of them as a team and organization,” Gina Crampton said. “When we showed up to play a Striker team, they always seemed to really play well together. They were an impressive bunch. …

As a parent, I always was just impressed with the level of play when we played a Strikers team. It was always kind of intimidating to me as a parent like ‘Oh, we’re playing a Strikers team today.’ “

Organization marks 25 years

It might be difficult to believe, but kids who grew up in Geneva watching the White Sox “Winning Ugly” in 1983 or imitating Ryan Sandberg during his MVP season in ’84 weren’t playing organized baseball in Geneva.

There simply wasn’t a youth baseball program in Geneva for them to play in until Rich Mittman founded the Geneva Baseball Association (GBA) in 1990.

Now, the GBA is getting ready to celebrate 25 years of baseball. Opening day ceremonies are set for April 25.

“We’ve got some commemorative apparel that we’re promoting on the website,” GBA commissioner Dan McGarry said. “We might get some patches for the kids’ uniforms, and we’d like to do something on opening day and introduce the former board members.”

None of this would’ve been possible if not for Mittman, who moved to Geneva in 1988.

Now, Mittman didn’t wander into a cornfield one night and hear a voice telling him to build a field in Geneva and the youth teams will come, but he did mosey into St. Charles and Batavia.

Realizing that the only baseball program in Geneva was a daytime one offered by the park district, Mittman was able to get his sons to play in St. Charles in 1989. In 1990, they played in Batavia while he simultaneously established the GBA. Still, he needed fields. And, he needed players. And, he needed umpires. He worked with Steve Persinger and the Geneva Park District.

Persinger agreed to provide fields, as well as prep them, if there was sufficient public interest. Meanwhile, Mittman and his wife, Nancy, sent fliers to the schools for children between the ages of 7 and 12, as well as distributed them during the park district’s daytime program.

attendance was very good, Persinger gave his consent and the following spring, on April 20, 1991, the GBA had its inaugural opening day with 91 players and seven teams, four at the majors level (11-12) and three at the minors (9-10).

Such a humble beginning has now turned into a program that offers baseball opportunities for those between the ages of 5 and 17, as well as in-house all-star tournament teams, 11 travel teams between 9U and 14U, a comprehensive six-week Spring Training Academy, a

fall league, as well as three $500 scholarships for high school seniors.

“The groundwork these guys have laid has made our jobs easy,” McGarry said.

“All we’ve had to do is minor tweaks.”

Chris Diemand served as commissioner for six years and coached for 19 years. His two sons played in the league, including Steve Diemand, who would later coach in the colt league with his father.

“I feel really honored to be a part of all this,” Chris Die-

mand said. “What Rich did to start this whole thing and to see what it’s become is really great.

I’m just fortunate to have had the time to work with and meet a lot of great people.”

GBA has been willing to adapt to the changing demands of today’s youth, and that’s helped it succeed. Recognizing there was a demand for baseball beyond summer, the GBA started fall ball in 2006.

“The kids were all going to Wasco to play, and they were charging so much to go out and play there,” former commissioner Dave Lamb said. “So we looked into doing something here and charge half of what they were. It seems to have worked really well.”

Like most youth baseball associations, participation numbers have dwindled because of other sports and activities. The GBA had 1,107 players in 2009, but expects to have around 625 this spring.

“It’s happened to everybody because the three-hour commitment for baseball isn’t as palatable as soccer and lacrosse

or other things,” former commissioner Bob Shabowski said.

“Part of our struggle is how do we get people committed to baseball. We’re still trying to figure that one out.”

But unlike Mittman’s challenge 25 years ago, Geneva parents don’t have to figure out where their kids are going to play baseball. If they’re interested, they only need to visit genevabaseball.com.

Thanks to him, his sons were able to play, and now he has a granddaughter and two grandsons who are playing in Geneva.

Josh and Jason Rader, whose father, Carl Rader, was GBA’s first major league president, won the major league championship in the GBA’s debut season along with Mittman’s son, Matt Mittman.

Jason now coaches his son, Cody, in Geneva.

It’s all come full circle, or better yet, around the bases in Geneva, thanks to Rich Mittman first digging into the batter’s box and getting the rally started.

“You know, seven years ago, when I interviewed for the job, I really felt like Geneva would be the place,” Ralston said. “That was one of the reasons I wanted to come here. I saw a lot of success in other sports programs, and in my heart of hearts, this felt like the place for me.”

There’s no question about that comfort zone now, nor about the Vikings’ destination later this week.

Lineup could be nuisance for Sox

Rose may be ‘slightly ahead’ of schedule

Adam Eaton Sox center fielder percentage leader, now has a tough out in the switch-hitting Cabrera in front of him and a professional power hitter in LaRoche behind him.

Johnson stole 84 bases in the minors two years ago.

Slowed by hamstring and knee problems last year, he dropped to 22. So far this spring, his legs are healthy and he looks fast, although he isn’t stealing a lot – perhaps to save his legs – with one steal in two attempts. The encouraging thing is he’s batting .458.

Johnson was moved to the leadoff spot Tuesday (J.B. Shuck replaced Eaton and batted ninth) and went 1 for 2 with an RBI. Eaton said if it works better that Johnson leads off and he bats ninth, so be it.

“As long as we’re side by side, that’s going to be great for us,” Eaton said. “We can do a lot with each other. Hit and run, bunt and run, I can take pitches because I don’t mind hitting with two strikes, giving him chances to run.

It’s really endless. And with Melky and I and Micah, you have three guys who can run the bases in front of Jose and LaRoche.”

In putting this team together, general manager Rick Hahn wanted to see a lineup that gives no breathers to pitchers. Executive vice president Ken Williams can’t get enough grinders, and this lineup potentially can be annoying to pitchers.

“Micah on the back end hitting one off his fist and digging one out,” Eaton said, “then you’re really [irritated] and you have to face another little [guy] like me. Then you’re really [mad]. That’s what we want.

We want to be a little thorn in people’s sides all year.”

For once, the news around the Bulls was generally good and the controversy was left pretty much to a minimum.

Sure, the talk about minutes limits and untimely substitutions isn’t going away anytime soon, but Tuesday was probably one of the better days the team has had over the past month. Not only did Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson practice fully, but coach Tom Thibodeau said Derrick Rose is “on schedule, maybe even slightly ahead” as he recovers from the Feb. 27 surgery on the torn meniscus in his right knee.

“It’s good, steady progress,” Thibodeau said. “As long as he’s able to keep moving forward like this, I think it’s a real good sign.”

The Bulls need some good signs. They’ve lost five of their

past six and entered play Tuesday in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, 2½ games behind Cleveland for the lead in the Central Division. The rumblings about usage and who wants players on the floor for how much flared up after Sunday’s loss in Oklahoma City when Joakim Noah only played six fourth-quarter minutes.

As for the minutes, Thibodeau explained how Noah ideally would be lifted around the same time, but issues like foul trouble, matchups, long stretches without whistles or a short bench could keep him on the floor longer early in the game. That then could factor into Noah’s usage late, like it did Sunday.

“There’s a lot of stuff that goes into it. I tried to do the best I could all year with it,” Thibodeau said of Noah, who didn’t speak to reporters Tuesday. “I think he’s averaging

less than 31 minutes a game so… . But we’re going to adhere to what we’re asked to do.”

That said, Rose, Butler and Gibson are making progress.

Rose has moved onto the next phase of his rehab and did noncontact activities during practice, while Butler and Gibson’s returns are coming close.

“It’s good, it’s good to see everybody out there trying to get back as soon as possible,” Butler said. “But I think some people are still a few days behind and whenever their body gets back to it they’ll be back at it.”

When everybody’s back, it means the Bulls would have a chance to keep some people fresh over the last part of the season. They also could have the three key pieces ready to go before the playoffs start in mid-April, something that could be valuable in the first round.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The White Sox came as close as they have to putting their likely Opening Day lineup on display for the first time Tuesday – with starter Jeff Samardzija and everything.

The guy at the top, Adam Eaton, was a late scratch with a stomach virus. After Eaton participated in morning workouts, manager Robin Ventura sent him home to get well and not risk getting anyone else sick.

Too bad. Eaton likes how the lineup looks down below, and he was eager to see how it might play as Ventura had written it up: Eaton CF, Melky Cabrera LF, Jose Abreu 1B, Adam LaRoche DH, Avisail Garcia RF, Alexei Ramirez SS, Conor Gillaspie 3B, Tyler Flowers C, Micah Johnson 2B, Samardzija P. In some ways that lineup starts with the No. 9 hitter, speedster Micah Johnson (assuming the rookie makes the team, a possibility that seems more likely each day). With Johnson before him and freeagent addition Cabrera after him hitting second, Eaton likes how things set up.

“We’re not turning the corner at 9, 1 and 2, we’re hauling [butt] around the corner at 9, 1 and 2,” Eaton said. “Pitchers are going to be [ticked] because our 1-through-6 or 7 is going to be [rough]. And when they get to Micah, he’s going to fight for eight pitches, and they won’t want to see me because I’m going to fight for eight or nine pitches and Melky’s going to put the barrel on the ball, and then you have to freaking see Abreu again. That’s going to be tough for teams.

“That’s the plan, of course.

We have to put it into action.

Doesn’t that sound good?”

It sounds tougher than what opposing pitchers had to face last season, a lineup that churned out a .237 average and .279 on-base percentage from the second spot and .218 and .272 from the ninth spot. Abreu, the major league slugging

Loss of eye’s lens flexibility is inevitable part of aging Dear Doctor K: Why does it become harder for our eyes to focus on close objects as we get older?

Dear Reader: The eye is like a camera: It has a lens that continuously focuses to sharpen the picture. As light rays enter the eye, the flexible lens alters its shape, allowing the eye to focus on objects at varying distances.

The lens focuses light rays on the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the rear of the eye.

As we age, the lens of the eye becomes increasingly inflexible. As a result, light rays focus behind the retina, rather than on it. This is called presbyopia. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put an illustration of how the lens focuses light rays in a normal eye and in a presbyopic eye.) No one knows exactly what causes the lens to become inflexible, but it happens to everyone as a natural part of aging.

As early as age 10, our lenses begin gradually to stiffen and lose the ability to change shape.

By the time we are in our 40s, the lens has trouble focusing up close. We begin to experience blurred vision when we try to do tasks that require up-close focus, such as reading or needlework.

Presbyopia eventually affects everyone, even people who are already farsighted (have trouble focusing on near objects) or nearsighted (have trouble focusing on objects that are farther away).

Fortunately, presbyopia can be treated with corrective lenses.

Because presbyopia continues to get worse as we age, your prescription may change over time.

Glasses are the simplest way to regain your ability to see close objects clearly. If you already wear corrective lenses, you may need two sets of glasses: one for distance vision and one for close vision. Or you can try glasses with bifocal lenses. With bifocals, the upper portion of the glass corrects for distance and the lower portion for near vision.

Trifocal lenses have separate

portions for distance, middle vision and near vision. The separate sections of trifocals are separated by lines. Progressive lenses accommodate distance, middle and near vision, but without the lines seen in bifocals and trifocals. Contact lenses also can be used to treat presbyopia.

What have been the most important discoveries in human history? The solar system? The wheel? Electricity? Antibiotics? Gravity? Evolution? The structure of DNA? The theory of relativity? The “big bang” theory? All of them are profoundly important.

I’d also cast a vote for eyeglasses. Most of us develop difficulty with our vision by mid-life, from presbyopia and other afflictions. Indeed, many of us have trouble from an early age. Without eyeglasses, could human society have proceeded as rapidly? Could we have made all those other discoveries?

Mother is a busybody Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and live with my mother.

My mom and dad were divorced several years ago, and I have very little contact with my dad, but he still fulfills his obligations for my support. My parents hate each other, but that is not my problem. I love both of them and do my best to get along with each of them without riling them up against each other.

I’m a solid B student and I dislike studying so I hadn’t planned on going to college, but lately I’ve been considering it.

I’m a good athlete, but my mom ruins every game for me. She always yells at my coach, or the umpires, or the referees. She even yells at the other players.

When you enroll, tell your counselor about the problems your mother had with high school teachers and officials.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and sort of overweight. A boy who lives across the street keeps calling me names such as “fatso,” “lard buns,” “elephant hips” and other mean things you couldn’t print. I go to a public school, but this kid goes to a fancy private school and thinks he’s a privileged character. Lately, he has been punching me on the arms and back.

I talked with my grandmother and she says to “turn the other cheek,” and this bully will stop pestering me.

I’ve tried that, and he continues to punch me even more.

Successful bridge players understand cue-bids and are good card readers.

A cue-bid is a call in a suit bid naturally by an opponent, the cue-bidder having no desire to play in that suit. Exactly what a cue-bid means depends upon the situation. To start this week, we have been looking at replying to partner’s takeout double. If the advancer (the doubler’s partner) has at least 12 high-card points (or an excellent 11) and his hand is not suitable for no-trump, he should cue-bid the opener’s suit – as South does in today’s deal.

This cue-bid is totally artificial, just point-showing.

In answer, the doubler bids four-card suits up the bidding ladder – here, rebidding two hearts. Then South jumps to four spades to confirm a long suit but a minimum in high cards. (Yes, he can bid a forcing two spades, which North would raise to four spades.)

Against four spades, West leads the heart ace: four, jack, three. West cashes the heart king: five, two, six. Then West continues with the heart 10. East, after ruffing away dummy’s heart queen, shifts to a diamond. How should South read the cards from there?

Based on West’s opening bid, the diamond finesse stands no chance, but the club finesse is a certainty. Also, note that declarer needs the club finesse to win.

So, he should take the trick with his diamond ace, draw trumps ending in hand, and run the club jack. The diamond queen disappears on dummy’s third club.
