Long lines blamed on same-day registration

bschory@shawmedia.com A little more than 31 percent of Kane County’s registered voters took part in Tuesday’s primary election, according to the Kane County Clerk’s Office.

The total votes cast was 79,430, or 31.19 percent of the 254,679 registered voters in Kane County, according to the Kane County Clerk’s office statistics. The actual day-of vote was 60,797 votes on Tuesday, and there were 18,633 early voters, according to the clerk’s office statistics.

At the last general primary on March 18, 2014, 37,790 people or 17.1 percent voted, according to the clerk’s office statistics.

“We surpassed that by 1 p.m.,” Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said. “It was not a huge turnout. … I don’t care if they vote for Democrat or Republican, as long as they get the vote out. The election costs the same amount if two people vote or 100,000 vote.”

The largest Kane County turnout in a general primary took place in 2008, 83,946 people or 39.68 percent of those registered voted, Cunningham said.

This time, more than 100 percent of registered Democrats voted – statistics show it was 100.04 percent. Cunningham said it was because of people registering as Democrats and voting on primary day.

“We had Election Day registrations that did go to Bernie Sanders – or Hillary Clinton,” Cunningham said.

“We don’t know whether the Hillary people got scared and got [the vote] out. There are two potential theories out there. It could be a combination of both,” Cunningham added. “Hillary Clinton did … good in Kane County.”

As to long lines at various polling places, Cunningham blamed the state mandate of same-day voter registration. He said he was “worried” about the November general election.

“It takes 15 minutes to process each same-day registration,” Cunningham said. “We’re trying to figure out if we need more equipment or … more staff.

It’s a question of cost here. ... Can we handle a bigger turnout? We’ll find out in November.”

St. Charles resident William Connell reported a line so long that he gave up and left his polling place at Bethlehem Lutheran Church because he had to pick up his daughter.

“I arrived to vote at 6:09 p.m.,” Connell said. “I was in line at least 40 minutes, and based on people I tried to count … there were approximately 150 to 175 people in front of me.”

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Words such as “blitzkrieg,” “guru” and “mercerize” were among the words seven area students spelled in a grueling, nearly two-hour spelling bee Wednesday at the Kane County Regional Education Office in Geneva.

After nearly 50 rounds, seventh-grader Nicholas Wilson from St. Patrick Elementary School in St. Charles spelled the last correct word

“trafficker,” leading to a standing ovation.

His parents, Tom and Marisel Wilson of North Aurora, said they were very proud.

“He studies hard,” said his father, Tom Wilson.

As the contest between her son and Parin Keerthi, a sixth-grader from Dundee Middle School in Dundee, continued, Marisel Wilson said she started to worry about how long it was taking.

“I was thinking, ‘He has home-

work. He has a test tomorrow. This has to end,’” Marisel Wilson said.

Another reason for pride, she said, as it was only the second time St. Patrick’s participated in the spelling bee.

Nicholas Wilson will get four tickets to a Kane County Cougars game, a free one-year subscription to Britannica Online Premium and an expense-paid trip for him and one parent to the Scripp’s National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May. Parin Keerthi said he credited his mother with helping him study – and

that he would be ready to compete again next year.

Other students participating were Surya Ninad Bhamidi, a fifth-grader from Cambridge Lakes in Pingree Grove; Anna Jerdee, an eighth-grader from Immanuel Lutheran School in Batavia; Justin Lanners, an eighth-grader from Algonquin Middle School in Algonquin; seventh-grader Janina Mangulabnan from Wredling Middle School in St. Charles; and Rozanne Tang, an eighth-grader from Elgin Academy in Elgin.

Tonia Khouri has won the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District.

With all 446 precincts reporting across Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties, she has 22,601 votes, followed closely by Nick Stella with 22,184 votes, according to unofficial vote totals. Herman White had 16,314 votes.

Khouri will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, in the general election. Foster ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Three candidates sought the nomination for the 11th district, which winds from Joliet to Aurora, taking in most of Bolingbrook and parts of Plainfield, Shorewood and other towns.

Khouri, of Aurora, is a DuPage County Board member who has strong Republican Party backing. She said she is a small-business owner.

According to her campaign website, she has three major focuses: the quality of education, the safety of communities, and the opportunity for work and job growth within the 11th district.

Stella, of Darien, is a cardiologist who said the most important issue facing the country is the economy.

He also said he supports repealing the Affordable Care Act. Stella favors simplifying the tax code by replacing the income tax with a flat tax, fair tax on consumption, or a combination of both.

White is a physicist who has worked at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia for 42 years.

White is a former member of Police and Fire Commission in the village of Naperville, where he lives, and of the board of directors of Edward Hospital. He is on the board of trustees at North Central College in Naperville, and he is the vice chair of the board for the Teachers Academy for Math and Science in Chicago.

Doughnut drive-thru plan nears final OK Batavia aldermen allow lane to open at 4 a.m.

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Plans for a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru lane at a Batavia gasoline station moved forward this week as city aldermen hammered out the details.

A final vote by the Batavia City Council will come Monday, and the Batavia Plan Commission will deal with landscaping issues shortly after that in April, but the project apparently will happen.

Harry Mehta, owner of the Shell of Batavia station at 108 N. Batavia Ave., plans to lease a portion of his building to Dunkin’ Donuts, which would operate the drive-thru lane and walk-up counter.

Objection to the plan has come primarily from the owner of the twoflat residence immediately to the north at 118 N. Batavia Ave. The most significant detail decided by the council’s Committee of the Whole on Tuesday concerned hours of operation for the drive-thru.

The drive-thru lane may operate from 4 a.m. to midnight, under conditions approved by aldermen.

Jim Warwick, owner of the two-

flat, who at previous meetings had made impassioned pleas to aldermen asking them to stop the project altogether, seemed resigned to the drive-thru lane.

“I thought ordinances were there to protect the little guy like me,” Warwick said.

One of Warwick’s biggest objections is the presence of the trash enclosure near the property line, and he asked Mehta to install a locking bar on the dumpster.

In January, the Batavia Zoning Board of Appeals rejected variances to the city code requiring that a drive-thru lane be at least 100 feet from a residential property, and that a business property with a drive-thru be at least 50 feet away from a residential property.

This means approval of the variances will require 10 votes from the 14-member City Council, but aldermen voted, 12-1, at a previous committee meeting in favor of the proposal.

The city staff is rewriting the ordinances affecting the proposal to grant the variances and to issue a conditional use permit for the drive-thru.

BATAVIA – Families have been cooped up all winter, eating their meals in the confines of their homes.

But now that spring has arrived, diners are ready to flock to area restaurants to try new fare.

At least, that’s what Batavia restaurant owners hope will happen next week.

Batavia Restaurant Madness – the city’s fourth annual restaurant week – will run Monday through March 25. Nearly two dozen restaurants will celebrate by offering patrons 25 percent off of their food bill.

“The goal is to bring in new customers,” said Jamie Saam, executive director of Batavia MainStreet, which is hosting the event with the city of Batavia and the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. “A lot of restaurants have said there have been new people coming in and trying out their restaurant [during restaurant week] who weren’t out there before. One restaurant didn’t [participate this year] because they got too busy during that week [last year] – the staff couldn’t handle the huge increase in business for them.”

According to organizers, Batavia residents and businesses should have received a postcard in the mail with a 25 percent off dining coupon. Coupons also can be printed at cityofbatavia.net/restaurantweek, downtownbatavia.com and bataviachamber.org.

Melissa Monno, who recently took over Rivers Edge Bar and Grill in Batavia – formerly O’Brien’s Pub and Grill – is excited to participate, noting restaurant week will be a great time for patrons to try out the gastropub’s new menu.

Evelyn (Wilson) Westberg, formerly of Bradenton, Florida, and St. Charles, Illinois, passed suddenly on Feb. 21, 2016, at age 85.

James Scott Brannen, age 77, died in his home on Wednesday, March 16, 2016.

He was born Aug. 31, 1938, in Evanston, IL, to Helen and Burton Brannen, and on July 23, 1965, he married his loving wife, Martha.

Jim graduated from Dartmouth College and Northwestern University, where he earned his MBA. He enjoyed a successful career as senior vice president of the First National Bank of Chicago and as president of Security Associates Inc. Active in local politics, he was elected a delegate to the 1970 Illinois Constitutional Convention.

Jim was a leader in the tri-city community who believed in the importance of giving back. He served on numerous boards and committees, including the Kane County Board, the Geneva School Board, the Delnor Community Hospital Board, the Geneva Jaycees, and the Geneva Lions Club.

Passionate about business development, he has been active in the Center for Business Education, Innovation and Development (CBEID) and the Fox Valley Entrepreneurship Center (FVEC). Jim’s favorite pastimes were cheering for the Chicago Bears and playing golf at the St. Charles Country Club, where he served as president and was on the board for many years.

Jim is survived by his wife, Martha; children, Craig (Dawn), Sarah, and Peter (Jennifer); grandchildren, George, Hensleigh, Emma and Ivy; and his brother, George (Pat).

St. Charles police make several arrests at 3 massage businesses KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com

ST. CHARLES – Arrests were made this week at three St. Charles massage businesses as part of a St. Charles Police Department undercover operation, according to a news release.

Arrests were made Tuesday at Best Massage, 2774 E. Main St.; Main Spa, 504 E. Main St.; and Lotus Spa, 1700 Ok Kim Lincoln Highway, Unit J, according to the release.

“An agent went into the business and requested a massage,” the release stated. “At two of the businesses, the per- Fenglan son giving the massage Smythe offered to perform a sex act in exchange for money. The agent immediately left the business and notified detectives, who then took the offender into custody. At Lotus Spa, the employee gave a massage without having the proper license.”

of Golf Course Road, Crystal Lake, was charged at Lotus Spa with one count of practicing massage without a license, a misdemeanor.

Ok Kim, 62, of the 3000 block of South Lloyd Street, Chicago, was charged at Main Spa with one count of prostitution, a misdemeanor.

Xinnian Hu, 48, of the 200 block of West 23rd Street, Chicago, was charged with one count of prostitution and one Xinnian Hu count of practicing massage without a license. Both charges are misdemeanors.

According to the release, Hu and Kim posted bond and were released, and Smythe was released on personal recognizance.

“In addition, administrative charges will be forthcoming for each of the three businesses,” the release states. “These charges come under the jurisdiction of the Liquor Control Commission for the city of St. Charles. The St. Charles Police Department conducts regular inspections of any business with a massage license to make sure they comply with the local ordinance.”

“I’ve been in the restaurant industry for a long time and part of restaurant weeks in other suburbs,” Monno said. “It’s springtime; people are coming out of the woodwork anyway. It’s a great time to showcase ourselves and get us on the map down here.”

Allen Soboj of Bulldog’s Red Hots has participated in the event every year.

“I really appreciate the efforts [of the Batavia downtown], and we hope as

the years go on, the program will grow some legs and gather some steam,” he said.

While he has no sales expectations, he said any extra sale is a bonus.

And he’s hoping for nice weather.

“When the weather’s nice, it’s a whole different ball game,” he said.

Saam agreed.

“January and February just kick the butts out of our downtown businesses because it’s cold and nobody wants to be out,” she said. “In March … I think it inspires people to get out when they’ve been in hibernation the last two months.”

I could’ve danced all night The Chicago theater scene is THE WRITE a thriving one. From “Newsies” PLACE to “Hamilton,” there’s always a show to look forward to. HowEmma ever, if you dislike the commute Chrusciel to the city or the price tag these shows command, let me suggest an alternative. The Fox Valley abounds in community and school theater programs that offer quality shows with minimal commutes and cost. While we’re on the subject, I have a specific show in mind that meets these exact parameters!

For the past few months, many Geneva High School students have been preparing for this year’s spring musical, “My Fair Lady.” The show, which opened on Broadway in 1956, follows the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who is taken under the wing of phonetics professor Henry Higgins. Eliza undergoes rigorous phonetic training in hopes of being passed off as royalty at the upcoming Embassy Ball. However, as Eliza comes to care deeply for Higgins, the conditions of his “experiment” threaten to forever alter the way she is perceived – and how she views herself.

In the show, I’m in the chorus, portraying an Elite. As an Elite, I get to be in two musical numbers: “Ascot Gavotte” and “Embassy Waltz.” Additionally, I’m playing Mrs. Higgins’ Maid (I have exactly one line!). I’ve enjoyed being part of the group numbers because I can feed off the energy of the other performers onstage and contribute to the beautiful harmonies of chorus songs. Plus, what teenage girl wouldn’t love to wear a fairytale-esque ballgown for the big ball scene?

The show has definitely been a learning experience on many levels, namely in the areas of tech and choreography. As part of the cast, I had to spend a certain amount of hours helping the tech crew build sets, paint scenery and all the other things that go into making the show look fantastic. Having barely used power tools before, it was certainly a challenge using them to construct set pieces! However, I’ll be proud to step onstage knowing I helped create just a smidge of our beautiful surroundings.

Dancing is not my forte, and therefore the show’s choreography presented me with quite a challenge. Luckily for me, both the “Ascot Gavotte” and “Embassy Waltz” were very formal and precise, and after hours and hours of repeating the steps, I managed to get the hang of them. Now I’ll just have to get through the dances in a long dress and heels ... .

However, I don’t think it’s the acting, the singing or the dancing that has made this particular show such a meaningful classic. In my opinion, it’s the show’s message that ultimately has made “My Fair Lady” so successful. It shows that with hard work, you can become anything you want to be … but maybe in the end you’ll realize that you don’t have to change to be the best version of yourself. I won’t give away the ending of the show for those of you who are unfamiliar with it, but I guarantee this theme rings true throughout every scene and song.

Geneva High School’s production of “My Fair Lady” will be performed tonight, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. This experience has been a great one; I can’t wait to see the hard work of the cast, crew and pit pay off in a phenomenal show.

Rubio failed, and not just because of Trump

The 2016 demise of Marco Rubio has been obvious for a while, but it is nevertheless a very big event. He was the Republican Party’s choice. He lost.

Starting last fall, I said he would be the most likely winner. I continued saying that through the early primaries and caucuses.

In fact, he seemed on track to win up until his disappointing Super Tuesday on March 1, and even in the days after that I thought he was in fairly good shape – that is, right up until his support collapsed the weekend after Super Tuesday.

Since I have been dead

wrong about Rubio, I can’t turn around immediately and tell you why he lost.

It’s something all of us who study presidential nominations are going to need to study, and it’s going to take some time, especially for those who believe that strong parties made up of formal organizations and informal networks control their presidential nominations.

Is this year a fluke? A sign that the system has changed? Frankly, I don’t know right now.

But I can run through some reasonable explanations of what happened with Rubio.

• The party chose a fatally flawed candidate.

• The party is broken.

• Trump.

The take-away here is that Rubio’s loss is inconsistent with the theory that parties control nominations and that Trump’s success is inconsistent with views the scholars of political parties have had about the presidential-selection process.

When more evidence emerges, we can adjust our theories or, sometimes, toss them out entirely and search for new ones.

For everyone else, the campaign goes on, with three unexpected candidates remaining.

St. Patrick’s Day possibilities McNally’s open in time for holiday; other pubs set to host events

n old friend is back just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, which falls on Thursday, March 17, this year.

McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub, 109 W. Main St., St. Charles, recently reopened. The Irish eatery closed last year, not long after Bill Stavrou purchased the restaurant and transformed it into the Valley Lodge Tavern. The Tavern shut its doors in December.

McNally’s manager Seamus “Shay” Clarke said that McNally’s has not only returned to its former glory but is better than ever.

“We’ve restored it, and we’ve also improved it,” said Clarke, who is from Dublin, Ireland. “We’re absolutely delighted to be back. It’s a vindication for many of us. It should’ve always have been an Irish pub. Trying to change it into something it wasn’t was a brave effort, of course, but McNally’s is truly an Irish pub.”

If St. Patrick’s Day celebrations from previous years are any indication, there will be plenty of reasons to stop into McNally’s this year for the holiday.

According to the “McNally’s Pub” page on Facebook, Father Jim O’Brien will celebrate Mass at McNally’s at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17, to honor St. Patrick. “Irish tenor Gavin Coyle will sing the Mass,” states the page, noting, “Breakfast will be served after Mass.”

“We’re hearing a lot of good things about us coming back,” Clarke said. “But we’re going to have to find everybody again. We’ll have to earn their trust and their business.”

Some of the former staff members are returning, and the restaurant has a new chef, Kevin Gillespie, who has worked at other local restaurants, such as The Patten House and FoxFire – both in Geneva.

“This is as authentic as you can get,” Clarke said. “If I wasn’t in this business, I would just retire.

I can only do Irish. The hospitality, the food, the music, the culture – we’re the whole thing wrapped up in a bow and tied nicely.”

St. Charles North’s Joe Myhre repeats as top swimmer

These were just some of the words that came to the mind of St. Charles North boys swimming coach Rob Rooney when thinking about Joe Myhre.

But of all the things that stuck out to Rooney about Myhre’s senior season, one that earned him his second straight honor as Kane County Chronicle Boys Swimmer of the Year, was his commitment.

“I have never seen anyone, and I mean anyone, with the commitment that Joe Myhre had day in and day out,” Rooney said. “I wish more people could see that. Too many people want to do things part-time. Joe Myhre does not stand for part-time.”

That commitment since his sophomore year at North – after his family moved to St. Charles from Indiana – helped earn him a state championship in the 100-yard freestyle at last month’s IHSA state meet at Evanston, as well as All-American honors.

Myhre, a University of Iowa commit, had the goal of winning an individual state title since first jumping into the water at North and got to do so in his final swim, in front of his family.

“To see him have the fun he did in that race and slap the water in celebration was just an extremely cool moment,” said Joe’s brother, Will Myhre, a freshman teammate. “He did some great things during his time at North, but he has told me since the beginning what his goals are and to see him accomplish them is pretty special.”

Will Myhre was .05 seconds from joining Joe as an individual state champion at the state meet, taking second place in the 100 breaststroke.

Not only did Joe Myhre win the state title in his 100 freestyle race, but he did so in a way that many people around North have come to know.

Since his first day as a swimmer – a day that came in fifth grade when he thought swimming might be “fun to try” – Joe Myhre has not been the most vocal or the most flashy, but Rooney has never been more happy to have a

“It’s very humbling,” Rooney said, “the way he carries himself. You have a lot of kids today that are good at what they do, very good, and they become very ego-centric. That’s not Joe. He doesn’t have any desire to be flamboyant, no need to be cocky. He wants to do things the right way and I’m extremely proud of him for that.”

Joe Myhre admitted that to this day, he continues to work on being more of a vocal leader rather than just leading by example.

Is it easy for him to come out of his shell in that way? Certainly not. But just as he has throughout his time as a swimmer, he’s committed to do whatever it takes to be successful.

“I love this sport so much,” Joe Myhre said. “I try to be committed as possible with everything I do, whether it’s swimming-related or not. I think

I’ve had this shy personality because of the kind of swimmer I am. I don’t really like to mess around, you know.

I like to come in, work hard and lead by example. It just shows that when you work through those tough days of winter break and training days when you want to give up, that if you power through them, the results will come.”

There hasn’t been a break, either, despite the season’s culmination in Evanston. Currently, both Myhre brothers are competing at the National Club Swimming Association’s Swimming Championships in Orlando, Florida.

there inside the pool, but Rooney has also seen it carry on outside of the pool for Joe Myhre, which is something he’s preached since his first days as North coach.

“He’s the best role model, in my opinion, to ever come through the program when it comes to being committed,” Rooney said. “He has not missed one thing or taken one shortcut since I have known him. He’s been 100-percent invested into wanting not only to be best swimmer, but also the best student-athlete he can be at St. Charles North.”

Joe Myhre said he will miss a number of things at North, from Rooney’s passion and life lessons to his teammates always having his back, but because of his own passion and commitment, North won’t soon forget its most recent individual state champion and all that he did during his time as a North Star.

Maverick’s wingman for a week Marmion’s Urwiler caddying at PGA event

kdruley@shawmedia.com Marmion sophomore Zach Urwiler planned to visit Universal Studios Orlando with his father, Gary, on Wednesday.

The younger Urwiler’s fantasies neither started nor stopped at the iconic Florida amusement park.

Urwiler’s elation easily reached an early Zach Urwiler apex one day earlier. As if caddying for highly regarded amateur Maverick McNealy at this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational PGA Tour event at Bay Hill weren’t enough, he was on the bag for Tuesday’s practice round that included World No. 3 golfer Jason Day. Urwiler took a selfie with the affable Australian and lived through the heart palpitations to tell about it.

“Oh yeah, great guy. Willing to talk with anyone,” Urwiler said. “He’s actually a real jokester. Pretty funny guy.”

Urwiler, naturally, won’t soon forget his Day with PGA royalty, but it’s a budding bond with McNealy, a Stan-

ford junior, that delivered him there.

In June 2015, McNealy drew Urwiler’s name from a hat for the Palmer Cup – a three-day, match-play event pitting the top collegians from the United States against their European counterparts – at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove. Urwiler, 16, is entering his third year as a caddy at RHF. He does not golf at Marmion.

Team USA defeated Team Europe in the Palmer Cup, and the Americans voted for McNealy to receive an exemption into the 2016 Arnold Palmer Invitational, paving the way for Urwiler to tag along. McNealy’s father, Scott, a Detroit native who named sons Maverick, Dakota, Colt and Scout after American cars, usually caddies for McNealy.

Urwiler, then, realizes his place when McNealy approaches the first tee.

“He’s very self-reliant. There’s not a whole lot that he needs from me,” Urwiler said. “So I’m there as a second opinion, if he needs help with the yardage or reading a green. … That second opinion, that’s something that I can do, and that’s what I try to keep in mind when I’m caddying with Maverick.”

RHF, a private club whose layout tests practically every shot in a golfer’s bag, has provided Urwiler steady ground on which to harness his craft.

Gary Urwiler, Mooseheart executive director, exposed his oldest of three sons to golf at a young age, and Zach Urwiler’s passion remains evident.

“What a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Gary Urwiler said. “Just great to be out here in this venue and see your son. To be able to watch it is very gratifying.”

Bay Hill opened in October 1961, but Palmer’s 1976 purchase of the course began vaulting its profile to the present-day level.

Anticipating the Invitational this past weekend, Zach Urwiler explored a virtual version of Bay Hill while playing there in his EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2013 video game for Xbox.

“Just a real eye-opener. It’s such a beautiful course,” Urwiler said. “They really do such a nice job with everything down here. It’s wonderful.”

Urwiler enjoys the outdoors and competes as a sprinter for Marmion’s boys track and field team. He realizes his workouts will be hard to replicate this week, especially as he recovers from a minor injury, but figures carrying a golf bag around Bay Hill will keep him nimble.

“Guys are really kind of jealous, I guess you could say, but I’m really excited to go back to share some of the stories,” Urwiler said.

“Just my senior year, I wanted to go out and have fun,” Bracken said. “I thought I may as well just go play a differ- Brian ent position, you know. Bracken Try it out, see how it is, and I love it. It’s a great change.”

Bracken and fellow Geneva student Zack Rittenberg form the top defensive pairing for the Hawks, the combined club boys hockey team also composed of students from St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Batavia and Kaneland.

Bracken regrets nothing about his choice as the Hawks brace for Saturday’s decisive Game 3 of the Illinois Suburban Hockey League Cougar Cup finals against the DuPage Stars.

The Hawks don’t, either. Batavia student Aaron Karkos has shined in goal throughout the season, while Bracken and Rittenberg take charge both at even strength and on the power play.

It wasn’t as if Bracken was leaving his crease for the first time this winter, after all. He routinely has eschewed his blocker and trapper during countless sessions on his family’s backyard rink through the years.

“I just go out there and shoot pucks all the time,” Bracken said, “so I’ve kept my skills up.”

Although goalies can be known for giving vocal direction, Bracken found even his socialization increased when he shifted positions. Before this season, he seldom had interacted with Rittenberg and merely knew they both played hockey and attended the same school. Now they’re friends.

Bracken also comfortably talks shop with Karkos when the situation arises. The conversations won’t soon turn to Bracken making a return between the pipes, though.

“It just gets a little tiring back there,” Bracken said, “and you want to branch out and try new things.”

With the Hawks JV also preparing for a Game 3 in the Hayes Cup – the club skates against Homewood-Flossmoor at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Darien Sportsplex – there’s the potential for pressure to seep in. Not on Gabrielsen’s watch, as he told the varsity and JV after Tuesday’s practice at Center Ice of DuPage in Glen Elllyn.

“I took both groups and I said, ‘The No. 1 thing on Saturday: Both teams have to have fun.’ That’s it. I mean, you’ve got to have fun,” Gabrielsen said. “It’s a fun situation, a Game 3.

This might be a once-in-a-lifetime [opportunity] for some of them. Hopefully, we get to the championship in future years and we can win it in two or whatever. But it’s a Game 3. It’s an exciting thing. It’s what it’s all about.”

“It’s our first year with the program,” Hummel said, “but I think we’ll be pretty good, though. … I don’t know how much the school is going to back it, but we love it and we’re ready to play.”

The organization took root last summer, with Kaneland parents Anne and Ron Shaw founding the club for their seasoned lacrosse-playing sons, Nick and Chaz, and their friends.

Hummel and Williams are first-time lacrosse participants, but Hummel finds an overlap or two with hockey.

“I guess puck work equals ball

work in lacrosse,” Hummel said, “so it’s very similar.”

Et cetera: Center Ice of DuPage marked a rare venue for several Hawks players, who did not often visit teams from the rink’s Admirals Hockey Club during their developmental days. Gabrielsen found an open slot in a bid to secure time for Saturday’s Cougar Cup finals Game 3. … With evaluations for the 2016 spring season ongoing, Tuesday was the Hawks’ lone open night to practice. “Whatever we can find,” Gabrielsen said. “Spring tryouts this week.” … Hummel admits he could be better versed on fellow Elburnite Bill Sweatt, a 27-year-old forward and former Blackhawks draft pick who played in three games with the Vancouver Canucks in 2011-12 and 2012-13. “My dad’s told me about him a couple times, but I’m not really familiar,” Hummel said. Sweatt since has transitioned to European hockey and is in his third season in the Swedish Hockey League.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ALL-AREA BOYS SWIMMING TEAM FIRST TEAM Joe Myhre St. Charles North, sr.

Myhre earned Kane County Chronicle Boys Swimmer of the Year for the second straight season after winning a state title in the 100-yard freestyle (44.92) at the IHSA state meet in Iowa. He will take his talents to swim at the University of Iowa next season after also helping North’s 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay to top-six finishes at state.

John Tarpey St. Charles East, sr.

One of the captains and leaders of the Saints not only qualified for two individual state races, but also played a significant part in East’s first sectional title since the 2001-02 season, as the Saints triumphed at St. Charles North. Tarpey competed in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, his state-qualifying races, for most of the season, which also helped the Saints defeat North in a dual for the first time in a number of years.

Andrew Lewarchick St. Charles East, sr.

Lewarchick made his impact before even hitting the water, competing as a diver all season. Despite not qualifying for the state finals, Lewarchick set a pool record at the St. Charles North Sectional, qualifying for the state meet for the second straight season. He got better as the season went on, battling a couple of injuries, and continued to talk of his aspirations to compete at the next level.

The sophomore Cadet has progressed into someone coach Bill Schalz thinks could be a standout swimmer in the coming years. Kamps qualified for state in the 500 freestyle, taking fifth overall (4:35.17) to earn Marmion important points. Schalz expressed his excitement, saying he “cant wait” for Kamps’ next two seasons at Marmion.

Clasen, a Batavia student, was one of a few standout swimmers attending Batavia this season as part of the co-op. Clasen qualified

and took eighth at state in the 200 IM (1:52.91), while also competing in the team’s 200 medley relay with Cooper and Keegan Hawkins and Ryan Sego.

Another Myhre? Better get used to it. The younger brother of Joe, Will Myhre made his own splash for the North Stars by cruising to a sectional title in the 100 breaststroke. In fact, Myhre was .05 seconds from winning a state title in that race at state, just being out-touched after winning the race the day before in prelims. Coach Rob Rooney said “the future is extremely bright” for Will Myhre.

Blood pressure treatment changes Dear Dr. K: A few months ago, I read results from a big trial were going to change blood pressure treatment goals. Where do things stand now?

Dear Reader: I’ll bet you’re referring to SPRINT. In September 2015, the National Institutes of Health (which funded the study) reported the study had been stopped earlier than planned because its results were clear.

Recently, the complete report of the study (called SPRINT) was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

SPRINT researchers examined whether a lower systolic blood pressure (the top number) target of 120 or less would be better than a target of 140 in patients with hypertension (high blood pressure). To do so, they recruited 9,361 patients who were at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and who had a systolic blood pressure of 130 or higher. They randomly assigned them to either standard treatment or to intense treatment.

Standard treatment meant using medicines to drive down systolic blood pressure to less than 140. Intense treatment meant driving down systolic blood pressure to less than 120. Compared with people who received standard treatment, those who got intense treatment had: • 25 percent fewer cardiovascular complications: fewer heart attacks, episodes of heart failure and strokes; • 27 percent reduction in the risk of death.

Study participants in the intense treatment group needed three medications, on average, instead of two, to achieve lower systolic blood pressure. Not surprisingly, this resulted in more side effects, such as blood pressure that was too low, fainting and temporary kidney failure.

Also, the results might not apply to everyone at increased cardiovascular risk who has high blood pressure. For example, patients with diabetes, heart failure, a previous

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff stroke or who were younger than 50 were not enrolled in the trial. Those with a very high blood pressure (systolic of 180 or greater) also were excluded from the study.

High blood pressure often doesn’t produce symptoms. Many people who have hypertension don’t even know it. If you don’t know your blood pressure, this trial should prompt you to find out.

If you already have high blood pressure, make an appointment to see your doctor.

Together, you should decide if you need more aggressive blood pressure management.

Patients sometimes ask me why doctors keep treating high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other health risk factors more aggressively. They wonder if maybe the drug companies are pushing doctors to prescribe more drugs.

It surely is true over the years doctors have been using medicines to drive blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels down.

But the reason is scientific studies have shown such aggressive treatment improves the health of patients. The SPRINT study is another example of that.

Sometimes, studies show the opposite.

For example, studies recently have shown we often were pushing too hard to lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. That has caused most doctors to be less aggressive in treating blood sugar. When we change practice, it’s because we follow the science, wherever it leads.

have initiated a similar program when I was an administrator at Garden Grove High School in California, if I had thought of it. I understand many school districts have adopted this sort of program with much success.

These are not bribes; they’re constructive incentives. Any program that encourages good citizenship, good grades and perfect attendance should be welcomed by students, parents and school personnel.

To avoid controversy, the rewards should be based strictly on grades with no consideration given for the difficulty of the course. This would allow the entire student body to participate equally.

Second, if you are planning on using the fixture in a newly constructed home, you will probably need to have the fixture UL-certified or you won’t pass an electrical inspection. I learned this the hard way when an electrician refused to install a non-UL-approved vintage fixture in a client’s home.

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, a 122-year-old company that tests not just light fixtures but also many other items, including blenders and suspended ceiling tiles, for safety.

According to UL’s consumer safety director, John Drengenberg, more than 22 billion items carry the UL seal.

To get a light fixture approved by UL, you need to send it to someone who subscribes to UL’s services.

(Translation: The person or company pays UL a subscription fee.) Typically, UL subscribers are large manufacturers. This is how it works: A manufacturer sends its product to UL, and UL

First, always ask whether a fixture has been rewired. Sometimes sellers note this in the product description, but if that’s not the case, call or email the seller to find out. There are a number of reasons to have a fixture rewired. It could be that the wiring is European, in which case it is not compatible with U.S. voltage, or it could be that the wire is dried out and brittle – a potential fire hazard.

You probably won’t have time to clean out every room or every closet, but if you haven’t used or worn something in a long time or no longer like it, don’t pay the movers to transport it. Set it aside to donate, give away or sell before your move.

Prepare the new home

Whether you are buying or renting your new home, put some thought into any cosmetic changes that can be made before you move in. (Actually carrying out these changes might

Painting will be easier without furniture in the room. Schedule a carpet cleaning at the new place and send rugs out for cleaning a couple of weeks before you move. Start early. Packing always takes longer than people expect and doing a little each day is much less stressful than trying to do it all right before your movers arrive.

You’re going to need a lot of boxes and packing materials, and I mean a lot. Whatever your estimate is for what you think you need, double it. Really.

Check local email groups for postings offering free moving boxes. If you are using a moving company, ask whether the boxes and packing supplies can be dropped off several weeks ahead of your scheduled move date, or order boxes and packing materials online. Make sure you have boxes in a variety of sizes, from book boxes to wardrobe boxes.

Once you’re ready to pack, go room by room and pack similar things together. Start by packing the rooms

and items that are not in daily use.

Pack your kitchen last, and label each box clearly with the contents and where you want it in your new home.

Be as specific about the contents of each box as possible, especially with kitchen items. It will make unpacking so much easier. And even though it should go without saying, don’t pack keys, computers, jewelry or important paperwork. Take them over to the house yourself and put them somewhere safe and out of the way so they’re not misplaced.

Zillow’s design experts say the trends you’re likely to see fade this year, in part because they’ve been used too many times, include: • Mason jars: They’re inescapable in hipster restau-

rants and bars and as light fixtures in kitchens, so the trend has probably run its course.

• Chalkboard paint: While the paint makes a great message board in the kitchen or a place for artistic expression in a kid’s bedroom or playroom, the reality is that the chalkboards can just look messy after awhile.

To save time on moving day and to give yourself some peace of mind, plot where you are going to put everything in your new place. If possible, take measurements, especially of key walls or spaces where big pieces, such as a sectional or media cabinet, could be placed. You probably will have to improvise a little on moving day, but you don’t want to be debating furniture placement while the movers are being paid by the hour.

Think about the essentials

A couple of days before the movers arrive, buy the essentials: paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, garbage bags and cans, and soap. Take them to your new home. Pack a couple of suitcases or boxes with clean sheets, blankets and pillows for each bed, bath towels and toiletries. That way you won’t be scrambling to find your toothbrush and bedding at the end of your exhausting move day.

While your furniture, finishes and accessories should be a reflection of your personal taste, there’s no question that fads come and go in home decorating. After all, you rarely see avocado green appliances these days unless someone is going for a retro look.

Zillow recently surveyed interior design experts and reviewed which photos were trending on the Zillow Digs site to determine what’s in – and what’s out – in interior design this year.

Among the design elements you should expect to see in more model homes and newly decorated are homes are: • Art Deco-inspired patterns and shapes: You’re likely to see these in artwork, wallpaper, mirrors and lighting fixtures.

• Nubby wool rugs: Natural fibers are popular for their look and feel.

• Encaustic tiles: These elaborately colored tiles,

Prioritize getting your kitchen unpacked and organized. From my experience, very few people – especially not families with young children – can function without a working kitchen. Nourishment during such a stressful and exhausting process is important. The sooner you can cook a meal in your new home, the sooner it will begin to start to feel like home.

Before the move, take pictures of your new kitchen and think about where it makes most sense to put everything.

For instance, plates and dishes can go in the appropriately sized cabinet nearest the dishwasher; glasses can go in an upper cabinet near the refrigerator, and pots, pans and spices should be near the stove. If you have time before the move, label the cabinets and drawers with sticky notes to indicate where you think the items will go. This is especially helpful if you have friends or family members who are helping you unpack.
