Forest Preserve District seeking volunteers GENEVA – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County seeks volunteers to train in any of three, much-needed areas to help manage natural resources.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 27 the district will offer herbicide training at Forest Preserve District headquarters in Geneva.

Course participants can earn a state certificate to safely apply the two types of herbicide used in the forest preserves, as part of natural areas management. District headquarters is at 1996 S. Kirk Road, Geneva.

Also, the District needs volunteer butterfly monitors.

The Butterfly Monitoring Network will lead this March 29 training program at the Belding Lodge at Brewster Creek Forest Preserve. The training course is from 9 a.m. to noon. Brewster Creek Forest Preserve is at 6N921 Route 25, St. Charles.

Then from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27, volunteers are invited to take a plants-of-concern training. This training will teach participants how to create ecological quadrants and use GPS to count blooms and stems for threatened and endangered plants. This training is at Brewster Creek. Little Explorers at Peck Farm Park GENEVA – Children ages 4 and 5 are invited to connect with nature through guided hikes, games, crafts, stories, and hands-on exploration at Peck Farm Park’s Little Explorers.

This eight-class series meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 8 through May 1, at Peck Farm Park, 4038 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

Activities led by Peck Farm’s naturalist staff change seasonally to help young explorers discover the ever-changing natural world.

Families learn science of making maple syrup

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Nancy Reppe of West Chicago brought her two kids to Sunday’s Maple Sugaring Days at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve because she wanted them to understand that maple syrup comes from a tree, not a bottle.

“It’s important to understand how the natural world works,” Reppe said. “We come every year. I want them to remember it.”

Kane County Forest Preserve District naturalists showed Reppe and others how to tap a tree for sap as part of the two-day event. Unfortunately, the sap wasn’t flowing on Sunday because of the frigid conditions. Blustery winds kept temperatures in the 20s and made it feel more like it was 10 degrees.

“Some years it has been like short sleeve weather,” said Valerie Blaine, nature programs manager for the Kane County Forest Preserve District. “Yesterday it was ideal. It was in the 40s.”

The weather had already played havoc with the event, which was originally supposed to be held two weeks ago at Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve. It was postponed because of snow.

The cold weather didn’t stop Diane Hahn and her family from coming to the event.

“It is a welcome to spring,” she said. “The maple syrup you find here tastes better than the corn syrup you get at the store.”

Her 10-year-old daughter, Julia, found out what real maple syrup tastes like by trying samples from Funks Grove, which makes syrup just south of Bloomington-Normal.

“It’s good,” she said. “It’s not too sweet.”

Fire causes $50K in damage to Geneva home

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – No one was injured in a fire that caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to a home at 515 Highbury Lane early Sunday.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 2:41 a.m. and found the home’s roof to be burning, with the flames being fanned by steady and strong winds, according to a news release from the Geneva Fire Department.

Fire officials said that heat

from an electrical failure in an attic ventilator or fan ignited the wood roof sheeting and shingles.

Geneva police officers woke up two residents who were unaware of the fire and led them out of the house before the fire department attempted to extinguish the blaze, the release stated. The fire was contained to the attic and roof, with limited smoke and water damage to the second floor of the home.

As a precaution, firefighters spread protective covers over

the home’s furnishings. Firefighters requested the city’s public works department to respond with road salt since water had spilled onto the pavement, causing slick conditions.

Batavia, Elburn and St. Charles fire departments assisted Geneva firefighters with extinguishing the fire and additional support was provided by the Geneva Emergency Management Agency.

St. Pat’s parade a true team effort

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Steve Martin took a second to point out all the cars, floats, police and people surrounding him on Saturday.

“In about 20 minutes, this will all gel into a parade,” Martin said, standing near the corner of Main and Sixth streets.

Martin has been the chief marshal 15 times for the St. Patrick’s Parade, including the one that was held Saturday in downtown St. Charles. He is one of 11 people on the St. Patrick’s Parade Committee who devote hundreds of hours to prepare for the big event, and one of more than 75 volunteers in all who are crucial on parade day.

The committee began meeting every Wednesday starting in December after the annual Holiday Homecoming event, said Craig Larsen, parade committee chairman. Like Martin, the committee includes a variety of parade veterans who use their past experience to keep each event running smoothly.

Penny was stationed at the Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St., to greet and give instructions to the volunteer parade pacers. She said the hardest part about her job is finding volunteers in the weeks before the parade and then making sure they show up for the event.

Martin said his entire role as chief marshall is based on bringing order to chaos. When Euclid Beverage showed up as an unannounced parade entry, he knew to place the company’s group right where a noshow club entry was supposed to be.

Over the years he has learned to block out 25 minutes a few hours before the parade to train the parade marshals.

The marshals help organize the staging area, making sure the entries are lined up in the right order and facing the right way.

As Saturday’s parade began, Martin, Riebe and the marshals made sure all the parade participants got onto Route 64 at the right time.

The staging area takes up three parking lots and multiple blocks along three streets, Martin said.

Every parade keeps the

committee and volunteers busy all the way through the post-parade cleanup, Larsen said. The crew planned to end their day together in celebration at Nuova Italia restaurant near the parade route.

“It’s a team effort,” Larsen said. “We cannot do what we do without all of these people.”

Two injured in St. Charles car crash

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A woman and a juvenile on Saturday were taken to Delnor Hospital after a two-car crash on the city’s west side, the St. Charles Fire Department said.

The crash involved a fourdoor black sedan and a pickup truck on the 1700 block of West Main Street. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at 8:14 a.m. Saturday, fire Capt.

Joel Meeter said.

The woman transported was the driver of the sedan and the lone occupant. She had to be extricated because her door was pinned shut after the crash, Meeter said. The sedan was later towed from the scene.

Another woman was driving the pickup truck, and a male juvenile in her car was transported for injuries, Meeter said. The pickup truck driver and two other juveniles

in the car refused medical treatment.

Meeter declined to identify the people involved or describe the nature of their injuries, only stating that the four people in the pickup truck are from the same family. He did not have an update Saturday afternoon on the woman and minor’s medical conditions.

St. Charles police had said details of the crash were not available because the incident was still under investigation.

Red Ramblers regain composure in winning state championship

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com PEORIA – Makur Puou exploded to the rim for a thunderous dunk, then accidentally crashed squarely on top of Heyworth forward Colten Reeves’ back on his way down.

Reeves didn’t care for Puou’s landing spot and momentarily reacted angrily before moving on, realizing there was nothing that could be done.

That second quarter play might have been the perfect image for Mooseheart’s championship season. The Ramblers – too tall, too powerful, too athletic for the rest of the IHSA Class 1A state field – completed their season with a 63-47 win Saturday against Heyworth in the state championship game at the Peoria Civic Center.

After the game, a fan showed the 6-foot-10 Puou a photo of his ferocious dunk on a cellphone.

“One of my friends said he’s going to make it a big poster,” Puou said. “That would be cool.”

The victory provided Mooseheart its first team state championship in school history and offered a satisfying ending to the twist-filled run for Mooseheart seniors Akim Nyang, Mangisto Deng and Puou, whose eligibility was briefly revoked last year by the IHSA. In what became classic Mooseheart style, the Ramblers offered their fans a substantial dose of heartburn to counterbalance the game’s many scintillating moments.

Mooseheart (29-3) surged to a 19-2 lead to start the game, settled for a 33-27 halftime edge, then saw the Hornets (268) briefly overtake them during the third quarter. To make matters worse for Mooseheart – much worse – starting point guard Freddy Okito was out of sight, receiving medical attention after taking an elbow to the nose and hitting his head on the padding of the basket after a hard fall while scrambling back on defense early in

Okito is the Ramblers’ best ball-handler by a longshot, and Heyworth feasted on Mooseheart turnovers in his absence.

“While I was doing the running, concussion test, I asked one of the kids that was helping what was going on [in the game],” Okito said. “He said we were down one. I was like ‘Whoa, hold on.’ And then I just knew I had to get back out here and try and help us get back up.”

Okito returned at the 2:09 mark of the third quarter, and the Ramblers breathed easier, closing the quarter more crisply for a 45-38 lead entering the fourth.

Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens recalled emphasizing the importance of Okito leading up to the season, despite the flashier presences of the towering South Sudanese trio, plus ball-hawking junior guard Hameed Odunewu.

“I said that a long time ago, and it’s proven to be right,” Ahrens said. “Freddy’s out and we’re struggling, they go up one. We get Freddy back out of the locker room after the concussion tests. … He comes back on the floor, and we win by 16.

It just proves my point.”

Puou notched seven of Mooseheart’s 10 blocks on the afternoon. Despite being drastically outsized, Heyworth attacked inside frequently, seldom coming away with points.

“In the film that I watched of them, a lot of teams try to attack their big guys, and a lot of times they don’t even have to jump to block your shot,” Heyworth coach Tom Eller said.

“So we were forcing some bad shots on the inside, so we tried to make sure we were getting open looks on the perimeter, and for a nice stretch in there, we were knocking those shots down.”

Mooseheart, however, went

on a 15-0 run spanning the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters, capped by a slick, crosscourt bounce pass from J.J. Odunsi to Odunewu, who scooped in the fast-break basket for a 54-38 Ramblers lead with 5:36 to play in the fourth quarter.

One day after scoring 31 points in Mooseheart’s state semifinal win, Deng scored 27 in the final, while Puou had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Odunewu scored 11.

After surviving tight games against Newark and Chicago Hope earlier in the postseason, the Ramblers raised their game, winning each of their last four contests by 15 points or more.

But this season – and this group – has always been about much more than basketball.

The South Sudanese students came to Mooseheart as sophomores, sitting out their first year to become eligible, with

hopes that a U.S. education could help them become successful in their war-ravaged homeland. Deng and Puou now are considered Division I college basketball prospects, although they might need to first attend a prep school or junior college to meet NCAA eligibility requirements.

Ahrens spoke passionately about their futures after the victory celebration, suggesting that each of the three is capable of becoming successful businessmen or even holding high political office in South Sudan because of their work ethics and commitment to education.

Deng has an alternate concept for the future.

“Manny talks to me all the time about building a Mooseheart in South Sudan, and he wants me to come out and run it,” Ahrens said. “I said you, know what, hey, I’m all for it.

I haven’t run that by my wife yet.”

The way teammate Taj Gibson sees it, Noah is playing the best basketball of his career and the rest of the Bulls are just trying to follow his lead.

Noah, however, has a different take on it.

“I think a lot of guys need to step up in order for us to do something special, and I think a lot of guys are stepping up,” Noah said when asked if he thought his game was raising everyone else’s. “I just like our demeanor out there, especially at the end of a game. I feel like every time you step onto the court, you learn something about our team, and I think [Saturday against the Sacramento Kings], the best part about it was our composure down the stretch. We didn’t let anything get to us.

We just stayed focus on what’s important – trying to win the game.

“Jimmy [Butler] didn’t have a good offensive rhythm, but [he had] huge rebounds, just huge plays that helped us win the game. [Mike Dun-

leavy] with just huge shots.

Taj with some big offensive rebounds. Those are things you need to win basketball games, and I think that was the best part – our composure.”

That composure will be tested again, with MVP candidate Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder in town today.

“They keep coming,” Thibodeau said of a recent stretch in which the Bulls also have played the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. “I like our schedule.

[The Thunder] is as good as it gets in the West. They’re right there at the top. They’ve got a lot of weapons, so we’ve got to be ready. They can hurt you a lot of different ways. We’re going to have to play for 48 minutes.”

And Durant will be another test for a Bulls defense that has been playing better than any in the league. “[Durant’s] basically a 7-footer with a high release that’s a guard,” Thibodeau said. “He scores so many different ways. He’s seen every type of defense you can throw at him. It’s very difficult to get to his shot. You have to try to make him work for his points.

He’s unselfish, plays hard, catch-and-shoot, post, runs the floor. There’s nothing that he doesn’t do well.”

2013-14 was a banner year for Geneva, which won its first regional title since 1985 and first sectional game since 1981. Mooseheart, meanwhile, went on an unprecedented run to Peoria behind standout seniors Makur Puou and Mangisto Deng.

St. Charles East returns several starters from last year’s Class 4A state runners-up, while crosstown rival St. Charles North is back to defend its Upstate Eight Conference River title.

NOT SO FAST, FRIENDS You should still have some fun with your brackets, for there has been a run of teams seeded 4 or lower that made it to the Final Four. There have been nine such teams in the last four years alone, including an 8 seed (Butler in 2011), a 9 (Wichita State in 2013) and an 11 (Virginia Commonwealth in 2011).

Also, the last five Final Fours have included seven teams that claimed neither a league regular-season nor league tournament title. So you still have to do a lot of homework before making your picks.

Somehow, defending national champion Louisville, 29-5 with 12 victories in its last 13 games, was relegated by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee to a No. 4 seed in the upcoming Big Dance.

Somehow, Michigan State, a preseason favorite to win it all and the perpetrator of jaw-dropping nastiness at the Big Ten tournament, likewise is a No. 4.

It all makes one want to shrug and ask: What’s the point of these silly seeds?

Except that they matter.

A lot.

Six of the last seven national title winners were No. 1 seeds. In the last 16 years, no team seeded worse than third has won it all. For all the talk of Cinderella this time of year, one of the best teams – from one of the power conferences – always cuts down the nets.

Let’s stay on championship trends. Sixteen consecutive tourney winners – again, all from the power leagues – were conference regular-season champs, conference tourney champs or, in eight cases (including Louisville last year), both.

Meanwhile, 13 national runners-up were league regular-season and/or league tourney champs. And six of the last nine were both.

Is the chalk starting to look good yet?

THE YEAR OF THE FRESHMAN Perhaps never has there been more buzz about a class of college freshmen than there was prior to this season.

Duke’s Jabari Parker, a hero at Simeon High School, has more than delivered. Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid are spectacular, though 7-footer Embiid is expected to miss at least the first tourney game with an injury.

Kentucky’s Julius Randle, Arizona’s Aaron Gordon and Syracuse’s Tyler Ennis have proved worthy of all the hype, too.

Only Gordon plays on a No. 1-seeded team, but all of these freshmen are among the best players in the tournament. If any of them is named tourney MVP, we’ll wonder how we didn’t see it coming.

Twice in the last week, Joakim Noah has looked ahead. That’s a no-no for a Tom Thibodeau-coached team.

“I just can’t wait for the playoffs to start,” Noah has said.

Maybe it’s because these are the dog days of the NBA schedule or because Noah realizes he and his Bulls teammates are playing as well as they have all season. Either way, with 16 regular-season games left, there seems to be little to be concerned about on the court.

Well, at least by most standards. Call it nitpicking, but the fact the Bulls have been outrebounded in back-to-back games – both victories, by the way – isn’t exactly sitting well with Thibodeau.

“We’ve been a great rebounding team all year,” Thibodeau said. “Usually, we have a number of guys with six or seven [boards]. A few guys get double-digit rebounds, so we can’t rely on one or two. We need everybody. I think we’re capable of being great with our rebounding.”

Asked what they can do to get better, Thibodeau said, “Jump.”

No one is asking Noah to be any better down the stretch.

How do I respond tactfully, but also convey that they should think twice before they say these things? – Upset In Ohio Dear Upset: If someone says you look good, respond as you would to any other compliment – say thank you. When someone offers a suggestion about how you can “cure” yourself, you’ll save yourself a lot of frustration if you keep in mind that the person cares enough about you to try to be helpful.

All you need to do is smile and say firmly that you are under a doctor’s care and are satisfied with the treatment you are receiving.

And, heaven forbid, if another individual tells you that your MS is “all in your head,” remember that just because a donkey brays does not mean you have to pay attention.

Dear Abby: I’m in a bind when it comes to hostess gifts. I know nothing about wine and am not much interested in learning because most of my friends and I don’t drink. I am also allergic to flowers and perfumes, so I would never give anyone flowers, soaps or candles, because if I did I would have to leave the party early.

This leaves me confused as to what is appropriate.

Could I give a nice jar of high-quality spice or are there better options? – In The Dark About Hostess Gifts Dear In The Dark: A box of assorted chocolates might be nice, if your hosts are sweet-eaters, or matching small- and medium-sized picture frames, or a box of note cards and matching envelopes. Dear Abby: My 11-yearold daughter, “Gwen,” just started middle school. She makes good grades, but she’s strong-willed. Do kids grow up instantly when they start middle school?

She wants to know if she can have a boyfriend. I told her not until she’s 15. Now she’s flirting with girls who ask her out. I told her to stay away from them, not because they are lesbians but because they are not good girls. They are always in trouble.

Gwen says I’m too strict, and if I don’t stop, she will run away. I adopted her at birth (it was an open adoption), and she recently asked me if I am going to place her for adoption. She was worried that I would. I am very concerned that she is hanging out with the wrong crowd. Any advice? – San Antonio Mom Dear Mom: People do not grow up “instantly.” I know individuals who are immature at 50, and I’m sure if you think about it, so do you.

From what you have told me about your daughter, it’s clear that she is far from the grown-up she thinks she is.

If you do not to want Gwen to date until she is older, that is your prerogative as her parent. The gender of the person isn’t the issue.

Because you think she is hanging out with the wrong crowd, my advice is to make sure she is so busy she doesn’t have time to spend with them. Involve her in activities outside of school – sports, Scouting, music or art. And be sure she knows that you are her forever mother and that nothing she could ever do will lessen your love for her.

Dear Abby: I am a 29-yearold woman who has just been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It has been a rough road, and I’m lucky to have such a supportive group.

My issue is, when people find out, I get comments such as, “Wow, you look so GOOD!” or suggestions on how I should “cure” my MS. The most hurtful one was that it’s all in my head.

William Arthur Ward, who coined many inspirational maxims, said, “A true friend knows your weaknesses but shows you your strengths.”

A bridge player with a weak hand can sometimes do well by sounding strong. Look at today’s South hand. North opens one diamond. What should South do?

The textbooks tell South that without six points, he should pass. However, he has two five-card majors – and we love majors. He ought to bid one spade. Yes, it is not without risk, but he has a reasonable chance to improve the contract.

Here, North will raise to four spades. That would perhaps give South momentary pause, but when he sees the dummy, it will ease his concerns.

After West leads the club queen, how should declarer plan the play?

If South had passed over one diamond and West had passed also, that contract would probably have gone down one. But maybe West would have balanced with two clubs or (better) a takeout double. Then, though, North-South would have had a second chance to find their spade fit.

South has three top losers: two hearts and one club. He needs to establish his heart suit.

And usually, in this situation, declarer should immediately play on that suit.

So, South wins with dummy’s club ace and leads a heart to, say, his nine and West’s jack. West cashes the club jack, then shifts to the diamond 10. Declarer wins with dummy’s ace and plays another heart. South trumps the next diamond and ruffs a heart high. When they split 3-3, he draws trumps ending in his hand and cashes his hearts.
