Kaneland staffing plan includes HR director KANELAND CONNECTION

Al Lagattolla SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland’s school board on Monday night approved a staffing plan for the 2016-17 school year that includes the reinstatement of the human resources director position.

Kaneland School District 302 has not had someone dedicated to a human resources role since 2010. Jeff Schuler was the district’s assistant superintendent for human resources before becoming Kaneland’s superintendent in 2010. Schuler left the district in 2014 to become the superintendent for Wheaton Warrenville School District 200.

Board members said the human resources director is expected to be paid $120,000 a year.

The staffing plan also calls for a reduction of four staff members at the elementary school level. That is based on a projection that enrollment will be down at the elementary level by about 80 students for the next school year, according to district documents. It calls for an increase in staffing at the middle and high school levels, based on numbers that show a projected increase of more than 50 students at the high school level.

Because of the reductions at the elementary level, the additions at the middle and high schools were described as “cost neutral.” Because of the addition of the human resources director position and other changes, such as increasing the position of assistant special education coordinator

Superintendent Todd Leden said a committee tasked with identifying staffing needs in the district had to cut down a list that could have cost more than $1 million.

The board approved the plan by a 6-1 vote. Veronica Bruhl, the board’s vice president, voted against the staffing plan. She said the human resources duties have been performed

by Sarah Mumm and Mike Purcell, the district’s directors of educational services. She said the district could have explored other, less-expensive options to address the HR needs, such as an assistant position.

Board member Ryan Kerry, who in recent meetings had been questioning moves that add costs, said he would

not be asking “where’s the money coming from this time.” He said the human resources director position is needed.

“I’m actually in favor of this plan,” he said.

There was support from those in attendance as well. Monika Hubble spoke during a public comment session near the end of the meeting. She said reinstating the human resources director position can change the culture of the district, although she added the district should restore other areas that previously were cut as well, including librarians and activity buses.

“Finally, you have an HR person,” Hubble said. “And that’s huge.”

ST. CHARLES – A 16-year-old St. Charles North High School student was hospitalized last weekend after he fell or jumped from the trunk of a car and hit his head on the pavement, according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

The accident happened about 4:51 p.m. Saturday in the 4100 block of Royal Fox Drive on the city’s east side and prompted response from the St. Charles police and fire departments, the release states.

The preliminary investigation

showed that a 16-year-old boy was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry that had two passengers, a 16- and a 15-year-old, according to the release. As a result of “apparent horseplay,” the release states, another 16-year-old boy – who was friends with the group – jumped onto the trunk while the car was stopped.

A witness reported seeing the car drive away while the teen was sitting on the trunk, according to the release.

It noted the witness lost sight of the vehicle but heard yelling.

“When the witness came out from the garage, he saw the juvenile [lying] in the street,” the report states.

According to the release, the case remained under investigation as officers worked to determine whether the teen fell from the vehicle or jumped and lost his balance. No citations have been issued, and there is no indication excessive speed or acceleration played a part in the accident, according to the release.

The release indicated the boy was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva and later was transferred to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

His condition was not known Tuesday.

Police reported that all four boys are students at St. Charles North.

Lauzen defeats challenger Shepro in ‘landslide’

asloboda@shawmedia.com In what he described as “landslide support” in Tuesday’s primary election, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen is on his way to a second term.

Unofficial election results late Tuesday indicated Lauzen had more than twice as many votes as challenger Ken Shepro of Wayne in the Re- Ken publican race for chair- Shepro man: 30,670 to 11,015 with 216 of the 228 Kane County precincts reporting. Results were not yet in from the Aurora Election Commission.

“I appreciate the landslide support,” Lauzen said.

With no Democrat yet in the race, Lauzen could run unopposed in the November general election. He said he doesn’t yet take another term for granted and noted he planned to be at work on time Wednesday.

The primary was Shepro’s first run

for elective office. He previously served as the County Board’s attorney. He offered a brief comment Tuesday.

“We have accomplished what we set out to achieve – we have renominated the coroner,” he said, referring to Kane County Coroner Rob Russell’s apparent win against Dr. Bob Tiballi in the GOP race.

Throughout his campaign, Shepro criticized various aspects of Lauzen’s tenure. Lauzen Chris alluded to Shepro’s charLauzen acterizations and accusations Tuesday.

“I think that the results demonstrated that voters preferred a positive message of past accomplishments, board teamwork and future goals for the county rather than angry negativity, false accusations and dirty campaigning,” Lauzen said. “Now it’s time to get back to work.”

Russell ‘humbled’ by support for coroner re-election bid

asloboda@shawmedia.com In a repeat of 2012, Rob Russell on Tuesday edged out a win in the Republican race for Kane County coroner against Dr. Bob Tiballi, according to unofficial results.

Early returns showed a tight race between the men, but Russell’s lead widened as results from more precincts came in.

With 211 of 228 Kane County precincts reporting late Tuesday, unofficial results showed Russell, the incumbent, garnered 20,175 votes to Tiballi’s 17,289 – a difference of 2,886.

Results from the 63 precincts within the Aurora Election Commission were not yet available at press time.

“I’m just very humbled that the citizens of Kane County have recognized the fact that I’ve worked very hard at turning

asloboda@shawmedia.com In the Democratic race for Kane County coroner, unofficial election results late Tuesday showed Tom Martinez had the edge by nearly 2,000 votes.

Martinez – who previously went by the first name of Tao – garnered 13,744 votes compared with John Shoemaker’s 11,745 votes, with 198 of the 228 Kane County precincts reporting.

Shoemaker, however, wasn’t immediately ready to comment on the results Tuesday night, as the Aurora Election

Commission had yet to report any of its 63 precincts in that race.

“My whole race was based on the city of Aurora,” he said.

An attempt to reach Tom Martinez for comment Martinez was unsuccessful before the Kane County Chronicle’s deadline Tuesday night.

The Democratic nominee likely will face incumbent Rob Russell in the November general election. With most precincts reporting in Kane County,

Russell had 44 percent of the vote compared with his challenger, Dr. Bob Tiballi, who nabbed nearly 38 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.

John Neither Shoemaker Shoemaker nor Martinez, who both live in North Aurora, was a stranger to running for coroner. Shoemaker was defeated by Republican Chuck West in the 2000 general election for coroner, and Martinez lost to Republican Rob Russell in the 2012 general election.

Shoemaker has a background in nursing and has held such positions as Aurora Township highway commissioner and township trustee.

He has said he provides leadership and knows what it means to work with others. He noted that his first term as trustee involved serving on a Republican-dominated board.

Martinez, who owns a company that specializes in the field of decontamination and restoration of biohazard environments as a result of deaths and accidents, said he would lead the coroner’s office with integrity, dignity and respect.

Hunt ahead in the primary race for Kane County auditor

bschory@shawmedia.com Incumbent Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt was ahead in Tuesday’s GOP primary contest against Craig Lee, according to unofficial and incomplete results.

Hunt got 20,876 votes to Lee’s 14,490 votes Tuesday. Some Kane County precinct voting totals were not complete, and results from the Aurora Election Commission were not available late Tuesday. The winner will run in the general election Nov. 8.

“I’m cautiously optimistic at this point,” Hunt said. “I’m looking forward to the results being finalized and official.”

As he finishes his first term, Hunt, 63, of Sugar Grove, had said he wanted to continue serving as auditor because “there is more work to be done.”

In improving transparency and accountability, Hunt had said his office has

also sought countywide risk assessment interviews, analyzing officeholders’ internal controls, ultimately improving their documentation.

The Kane County Terry Hunt OpenGov platform provides the online availability of county finances, with every internal audit report published, Hunt said.

Geneva resident and retired businessman Lee, 64, had said he sought the auditor post because he did not agree with

the way Hunt ran the office. Among the issues he disagreed with, he said, was that Hunt hired two employees during a hiring freeze.

“I’m here to correct a problem we made four years ago and bring accountability back to Kane County and not hire people in the middle of a hiring freeze,” Lee had said.

Hunt had said he had a staff of two, and when one retired and the other left, he hired replacements – which did not constitute additional hiring during a hiring freeze.

Elburn sales tax referendum appears to have failed

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Although numbers were not official and the vote totals remained close, Elburn’s quest to raise its sales tax appeared to have failed, according to information posted on the Kane County clerk’s website.

For most of the night, election results showed the totals going in favor of the referendum. However, at 11:45 p.m., the final precincts counted showed that there were 701 votes against the referendum and 683 in support of it.

Elburn currently has a sales tax of 7 percent. The village was looking to increase that to 8 percent in 0.25 percent increments.

The tax would not affect vehicle purchases and medicine. Also exempt would be many grocery items, though alcoholic beverages and soft drinks will be included in the tax. Also included in the tax would be food sold at restaurants.

The tax increase would help the village’s

general fund. Village President Dave Anderson has called it a way for the village to use “OPM” – or other people’s money – to help make improvements.

On Tuesday night, Elburn Trustee Dave Gualdoni said the village’s message could have been stronger. He said other nearby communities already had a tax of 8 percent and he felt Elburn was “kind of behind in that respect.”

“If you’re driving on Randall Road, you’re already paying it,” Gualdoni said. “It’s really pennies. … But it’s money for the village that we don’t have … since we don’t have any other way to raise taxes or make cuts.”

Elburn resident Ellen Petersen spoke out at a recent Elburn Village Board meeting against the proposal.

“Would it stop me from shopping in Elburn? Absolutely not,” she said Tuesday night. “I want to support our local businesses. … I just feel like the whole situation should be reversed.

We should look at it as an asset that we have lower taxes.”

North Aurora resident Susan Starrett snagged the Republican nomination for District 10 in Kane County over challenger Doug Sullivan, according to unofficial results.

Starrett had tallied 1,835 votes to Sullivan’s 1,367 late Tuesday.

“I think the most important thing that people here in District 10 know, when I made promises to them three years ago, I actually kept my promises,” Starrett said. “That showed today in the voting and what I’ve done for the district and how proud I am to be a board member.”

“I just wasn’t able to get my message out this time, so congratulations to Susan,” Sullivan said.

Starrett will run in the Nov. 8 general election.

“I have had an overwhelming response from people who live in my district who have called me,” Starrett had said about her decision to seek a second term. “People have

said, ‘We have been so pleased with the job you are doing.

Anytime anyone has a question, you get back to them. … You represent us well on Susan the board. You repreStarrett sent our interest.’ ” In particular, Starrett said she promised never to vote to increase taxes and that she would work with the board members on both sides to freeze the county’s portion of the tax levy.

Sullivan, who is president of the Batavia Library Board, said he sought the position because he thought Starrett had not represented the district as well as she said.

“She has not been engaged in the representation of her constituents,” Sullivan had said, and criticized Starrett’s attendance at meetings.

Starrett had defended her attendance and had said she missed some meetings because she had a baby.

The winner of that race will run against incumbent U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, in the Nov. 8 general election. Hultgren ran unopposed in the primary.

Walz ran against John Hosta of Spring Grove, who got 14,555 votes, and Jesse Lee Maggitt of Plainfield, who got 7,543 votes, also in unofficial and incomplete results.

“There is a long way to go,” Walz said late Tuesday. “I certainly want to be victorious, but I am no way in a position to say anything. ... But I am heartened by the voter turnout for the party, and I think that that’s a very good thing.”

Roskam, Howland to meet Nov. 8 Nick Stella has narrow lead Candidate Amanda Howland of Hawthorn Woods easily beat challenger Robert Marshall of Burr Ridge to win the Democratic nomination for the 6th Congressional District seat in Tuesday’s primary election.

Howland captured 67 percent of the vote to Marshall’s 33 percent, according to unofficial results.

Howland, an attorney and College of Lake County trustee, will face U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, in the Nov. 8 general election. Roskam beat challenger Jay Kinzler of Glen Ellyn to win the Republican nomination for the 6th Congressional District seat.

Howland said she is looking forward to the race against Roskam.

“I think it will be an interesting race, and we’ll have to see what happens,” she said. “But I think there are issues that we can do a better job with than he is now.”

With most districts reporting Tuesday night in the GOP race, Roskam was leading handily with 69 percent of the vote compared to Kinzler’s 31 percent.

Born: May 6, 1953; in Aurora, IL Died: March 13, 2016; in Geneva, IL Mike Carlock Casey, age 62, of Geneva, died peacefully on March 13, 2016, at Delnor Hospital. Mike was born on May 6, 1953, in Aurora. He lived in West Chicago and graduated from West Chicago High School in 1971.

He married Linda McGuyer in 1973, Melody Gehrke in 1974, Laura Wilson in 1983 and Teresa Gregory in 1993. He had five children from his various marriages. He enjoyed fishing and reading horror books among other pursuits.

He is survived by his mother, Ruth Carlock; his wife, Teresa; a daughter, Melanie Casey; two sons, Mike Casey Jr. (and his life partner, Garry Lafever) and Nicholas Casey.

He has a grandson, Dale Casey; two sisters, Carol (Bill) Gates and Linda (Keith) Elliott; and many nieces , nephews and cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Dale Carlock; two children, Brenda and Nathan Casey; uncle, Troy Yearton; and a niece, Heather Porter.

The math behind spring beauty As we finally approach spring, we look forward to the return of brilliantly colorful spring flowers. But even more interesting than the beautiful colors we will see are the beautiful colors we cannot see.

The strength and beauty of mathematics give us the right perspective to think about confusing statements such as the one above. Many people see mathematics as a morass of formulas and calculations, but – if you advance far enough – you get to learn things such as “linear algebra.”

Don’t stop reading there, because I am about to tell you the many ways linear algebra affects your everyday life ... .

Netflix uses linear algebra to predict what movie or TV series you will enjoy.

Google uses linear algebra to predict what website you are looking for. The Math and Engineering Club at Waubonsee Community College uses linear algebra to predict who will win the NCAA basketball tournament. And we can use linear algebra to describe how color really works.

Human eyesight is based on three types of cones in our eyes. Using linear algebra, we know to think of this as seeing three “dimensions” of color. Look at a computer screen with a magnifying glass

Look inside your inkjet printer to see that the colors are generated using three types of ink: cyan, magenta and yellow. Look at an image in a computer graphics program to see the color described in terms of three quantities: hue, saturation and value.

There are many ways to describe color, but – for most humans – color always is built out of three dimensions.

If someone is born with only two types of cone cell, the person is colorblind.

The mathematical perspective, however, is that their color vision is reduced to only two dimensions. Many people (and actually most mammals) are colorblind this way. In its most common form, colorblindness means you can perceive the difference between blue and yellow, but a pattern of red and green stripes or a football game between teams with red and green jerseys is impossible to distinguish.

The surprising thing is that many birds and insects have four – or even five – types of cones, allowing them to see an even more vibrant spectrum of colors than any person has seen. From the insects’ point of view, we humans are hopelessly colorblind. With only three dimensions of color vision, we are unable to see the radiant ultraviolet bulls-eye pattern on the black-eyed susan. We see the daffodil as a flat yellow, oblivious to the shocking alternating stripes that appear on every daffodil blossom.

Imagine what the world would look like if you had 16 types of cones, like the mantis shrimp.

Enjoy the many hues of spring, no matter how many dimensions of color you can see. And enjoy the mystery of it all a little bit more, knowing there’s even more beauty that we cannot see.

Batavia Boys Basketball is currently 19-9 heading into the post season. Team accomplishments include UEC River Champions and Rockford MLK Shootout Champions.

Canaan is the ultimate example of everything a student/athlete should be. He is one of the team captains and is always the first in the gym to work and one of the last to leave. He holds a GPA that is an A average.

He has committed himself to play basketball next year at Indiana Wesleyan University.

A Central Michigan commit, Smith recently concluded his career as the Storm’s all-time leading scorer.

He averaged 15 points per game in his senior season while maintaining the reins as a team leader.

Luke McCurdy is a senior captain on the Burlington Central Boys Basketball team.

This season Luke averages 5.9 p.p.g., 4.5 r.p.g., along with 2.6 a.p.g, Luke McCurdy has been instrumental part of leading Burlington Central to a Big Northern Conference title and an overall record of 25-3.

St. Charles head-shaving event sets $10K fundraising goal

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Adults and kids willing to go bald will take the stage at Anderson Elementary School on Friday as part of an annual effort to raise money for childhood cancer research.

Anderson Gives Back, a St. Baldrick’s Foundation event, aims to raise $10,000 – an amount last year’s efforts surpassed by $4,000, volunteer event organizer Brooks Nicewarner said.

This is the third year for Anderson Gives Back, which started when a teacher’s son was diagnosed with brain and spine cancer, he said, noting the family is expected at Friday’s event.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., with opening ceremonies beginning at 6:45 p.m., Nicewarner said. Seven barbers have agreed to shave participants’ heads, he said, noting that is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on the stage in the school’s gym.

The public is welcome, Nicewarner said. About 20 people had signed up for the event as of Monday afternoon, he said. Participants pledge to raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which is described as the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants.

Nicewarner and his fifth-grade son, Connor, plan on participating. It will be Nicewarner’s 11th year involved with a head-shaving event and his son’s 10th year, he said.

Those not willing to part with their locks may support the cause by buying green hair extensions for $10, Nicewarner said. Suzanne Denee Salon in St. Charles helps with that effort, he said, adding that the salon will continue to sell the extensions through March.

Proceeds from the hair extensions and the head shaving will benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, he said.

Money also will be raised through raffle tickets and food sales, Nicewarner said. He said those funds will benefit Ronald McDonald House at Central DuPage Hospital.

St. Charles school board undecided on referendum timeline

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 is about to take the community’s pulse – again.

But unlike last fall, when much of the focus centered on possible elementary school closures, the district will seek input on the future of its middle schools.

Superintendent Don Schlomann suggested hosting three community input sessions as the school board on Monday struggled about when to proceed with a middle school referendum.

Board members were split between November 2016 and April 2017.

With a November 2016 referendum, he said, advantages include a predictable turnout, a reduced impact of the anti-tax voters and – if the referendum is approved – the ability to start projects sooner. But, he said, there is also less time to prepare, more costs and the possibility voters will get caught

up in the mood from the national elections.

An April 2017 referendum would be less expensive and provide more preparation time, Wright said, adding that strategy can drive positive turnout. Disadvantages include a greater impact of the anti-tax voters, burnout from the school year and school board elections.

Board member Kathy Hewell supported an April referendum, as there are several components for voters to understand, including the district’s debt situation and need to address the middle schools.

“There are a lot of pieces to this picture,” she said. She later added, “November isn’t giving us our best

chance.”

By getting public feedback through a series of meetings at each middle school this spring, the board should know whether the referendum effort would benefit from a longer timeline, Schlomann said.

He plans to present the community with several options that relate to the board’s desire to reduce the number of middle schools to two. He noted one option would be to leave the middle schools alone.

Some board members said a do-nothing option would give the community a muddled message. Schlomann argued it should be included because it “helps your decision to go to two” middle schools.

GENEVA – Geneva High School’s spring musical, “My Fair Lady,” will open for three performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the high school auditorium, 416 McKinley Ave., Geneva.

Director Roxanne Curtis said rehearsals have been challenging due to students getting sick.

“We had flu, viruses, strep throat – all kinds of stuff,” Curtis said. “It was difficult. ... Kudos to always having kids who willingly would step in and read for the part.”

Annie Brown, a 16-year-old junior, plays Eliza Dolittle, the Cockney girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, so that she may speak as a lady.

“This show has really been one of my favorites,” Brown said. “My dad showed me the movie when I was growing up, and I fell in love with it – especially Audrey Hepburn in that role. I am really excited to take part in it.”

T.J. Farrell, an 18-year-old senior, is cast as Professor Henry Higgins.

Farrell said he draws a lot of inspiration from Rex Harrison, who portrayed Higgins in the 1964 musical.

“He is the perfect Henry Higgins, but I will bring my own style and twist to it,” Farrell said.

Natalie Carberry, a 17-year-old senior, plays Mrs. Pearce, Higgins’ housekeeper.

“It was fun for me because I get to play the more disapproving, more incharge person,” Carberry said. “I’m sort of the voice of reason in most of the scenes.”

Humanity may be losing a race with its own growth

Humanity is engaged in a highstakes race with its own growth: Lest our use of energy and materials get out of control, we must constantly innovate to become more efficient. Unfortunately, new research suggests we may be losing.

The rapid advancement of electronics technology illustrates how the race works. The number of transistors in the world’s devices has gone from one in 1947 to a thousand billion billion today – more than there are letters in all the written text produced in human history. The proliferation hasn’t inundated the planet because the amount of physical material and energy used in each transistor has shrunk spectacularly, reflecting a relentless advance – seen in almost all technologies – that gets economists and tech enthusiasts excited about the possibilities for a cleaner and more environmentally friendly future.

The hope is that by doing more with less, we can keep growing without bumping up against physical limits – an optimistic vision sometimes called “decoupling.” But is there any evidence for it? That’s less clear.

Long ago, the economist William Jevons noted that improvements in energy efficiency, by reducing prices, often induce people to use still more energy. For decoupling to work, efficiency gains in energy or material must outpace this “rebound effect,” as well as other factors, such as overall growth in production and population. Despite all the progress humanity has made, a new parsing of the empirical data suggests that’s not happening.

Two engineers, Christopher Magee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tessaleno Devezas of the University of Beira Interior in Portugal, looked at two sets of data covering 116 different technologies existing between 1940 and 2010, ranging from the chemical industry and electronics to metals, wood and energy. Almost ev-

ery technology over this period shows exponential improvement (although at different rates) in prices, performance and efficiency of energy and material use. Over 20 years up to 2009, for example, the price of photovoltaics consistently dropped about 10 percent per year.

The improvements weren’t enough, however, to outpace the combination of population growth, economic expansion and the rebound effect. As a result, overall material use tended to increase: Those photovoltaics, for example, consumed about 13 percent more materials each year.

To be sure, the data are far from perfect. Information on many of the 116 technologies exists over intervals of only one or two decades. Still, the fact that none of the data fit the usual story of decoupling suggests the concept is at the very least highly questionable.

The only six exceptions were technologies for producing substances such as asbestos, mercury and thallium – all toxic materials that were ultimately

controlled by policy intervention and legal restriction.

The results don’t imply that humans won’t ever achieve decoupling.

They simply suggest the historical record so far isn’t encouraging and there’s no reason to expect it to happen on its own.

Magee and Devezas, for their part, remain optimistic. We might still find a solution, they told me, if we can manage to eschew politically motivated argument and predetermined conclusions in favor of more good science and especially empirical work. The more we recognize the burden that ever-increasing material use puts on the planet, the more we might be able to encourage forces of many kinds – market, government or spontaneous social movements – to counter the trend.

Its 2015 season ended much earlier than it had planned, and seniors including Megan McEachern and Mackenzie Foster could not wait to take the field for Tuesday night’s season opener against Plainfield Central.

Foster scored seven minutes into the game while McEachern added two second-half goals to help the Bulldogs cruise to a 7-1 victory in the nonconference contest.

Seasoned North Stars roll on road

editorial@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – The first thing one notices when looking at the St. Charles North badminton roster is that all the girls are seniors.

In addition, they are all veteran players, having competed at the varsity level last year.

The North Stars showed their experience Tuesday afternoon when they beat Larkin, 13-2, in both teams’ season openers. North swept the five doubles matches and won eight of the 10 singles matches in the Upstate Eight Conference contest.

Larkin won the Nos. 9 and 10 singles matches.

“Coming into it, we knew we had 10 returning seniors to their not so many returning seniors. I thought we might take it, but I didn’t think it would be as lopsided as it is it was,” North coach Michael Smith said.

“For our first meet, I thought it went pretty well,” said Kaitlin Hartig, who won the No. 1 singles match over Diane Jimenez in two games, 22-20, 2116. “I was excited about that.”

Foor also won the third singles match, 21-13, 21-8, over Niha Ahmad.

“The singles was tougher to win because for doubles I have my partner, Jessica,” Hartig said “She’s always there to back me up and get the drops, but for singles you’re running all over (the) court, and it is very tiring.”

Smith hopes his team’s experience will translate into a strong showing in the conference.

“With 10 returning seniors and a

lot of leadership, I expect do pretty well in the conference,” Smith said.

“I can’t say where we will finish, but I think we would have strong showing in each meet. Geneva is always tough, East Aurora is always tough and Glenbard East is going to be good.

There is not a weak school in the conference.”

Hartig agreed that North will do well in the UEC due to the team’s veteran presence.

“I think the season is going to be really good. A lot of girls have been playing varsity since their sophomore year,” Hartig said. “This can be a really strong year for our team.”

Smith did give two underclassmen their first taste of varsity action. He brought up freshmen Jordan Walters and Lauren Maisto for the meet, playing them at Nos. 9 and 10 singles.

“The nine (Walters) went to a third (game),” Smith said, “and the 10 almost won.”

“I’m really proud of our girls. I know we didn’t win, but they did well,” said Sara Lang, who made her debut as Larkin’s coach. “They improved with each match, and that’s all we really ask right now.”

Continued from page 17 “I thought we did a good job of playing together and filling the roles of the girls who graduated,” said McEachern, who had a goal and an assist in regional championship loss to Conant. “We were very anxious to get out here, and I think it was definitely a good start to the season. I feel like we did a better job in the second half of moving the ball up to the forwards, and we finished our chances.”

Plainfield Central’s Arely Sanchez deflected a ball that was just out of the reach of Domin to break the Bulldogs’ shutout with 26:18 to play.

Rakos added her second goal of the game less than eight minutes later for the final six-goal advantage.

Gianfrancesco liked that he was able to get a number of Bulldogs into the game, knowing that Tuesday’s lopsided margin figures to be rare during a long season and trek through the Upstate Eight Conference.

“You’re not going to be able to do that very time out, you know,” Gianfrancesco said. “Saturday against Wheaton (Warrenville) South we are probably not going to have that. We had 20 people have a hand in us winning today. It’s nice to get them that opportunity to get familiar with each other because you have limited times to do that Sean King for Shaw Media throughout the course of a season.”

How did everyone approach the winning streak entering the sectional championship? There were a couple blowout wins in there.

What do you say about the Orange Fever (student section)? Whether you’re playing at East or in Rockford, they’re there in droves.

They’re amazing. I can’t even put into words our student section. I mean, they’re – I would probably say – the best in the state. At school, they’re coming up to you, they’re talking about the game, and they’re very knowledgeable and they’re very loud. I couldn’t have more fun playing in front of them.

Any last thoughts on the season?

I love every one of these guys. I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this team.

St. Charles East senior point guard James McQuillan, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, played an instrumental role in helping the Saints to the program’s first IHSA sectional berth since the 2006-07 season. McQuillan scored 10 points in a runaway sectional semifinal victory against Prairie Ridge on March 9 before scoring 11 points in a narrow loss to Rockford Auburn in Friday’s Class 4A Rock Valley College Sectional championship game.

The following is an edited transcript of McQuillan’s conversation with Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley.

Marmion boys tennis wins

Today, the color guard team will host the first annual “Toss-A-Thon” as part of its Spring Fever Week, in which team members will perform 100 tosses with their flags. The team has a goal to raise $10,000.

Gentry still ‘loves the gym’ as redshirt wanes QUICK READ Kevin Druley

S.D. St. guard supports NCAA-bound team St. Charles East alumnus Cole Gentry figures to bask in some screen time on TBS late Friday afternoon.

Nah, this isn’t a set-up for the cable network’s “Very funny” tagline.

Gentry, a guard, is redshirting his freshman season for the South Dakota State men’s basketball team, which faces Maryland in the first round of the NCAA tournament at approximately 3:20 p.m. Central time.

Gentry practices with the Jackrabbits and spends games offering support from the bench. South Dakota State wears blue and yellow, but Gentry hardly is the former when it comes to his decision.

“I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running next year,” he said.

A 5-foot-10, 180-pound business economics major, Gentry earned his first college basketball experience during the Jackrabbits’ exhibition season.

He contributed eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in a combined 26 minutes in separate home blowouts of South Dakota Mines and Dakota Wesleyan in late October and early November. Gentry would like to think he showcased his full repertoire, but knows that wasn’t quite the case.

Not when he failed to connect on each of his five 3-point attempts, anyway.

“The biggest adjustment has been with the physicality,” Gentry said.

“I feel like I have a good grasp and handle of the speed, but it’s really the physicality, especially when you’re fronting someone down low.”

It’s likely several Saints faithful are penciling Summit League tournament champion SDSU to advance past Big Ten at-large Maryland in their NCAA brackets simply because of the Gentry connection, redshirt be darned.

Imagine how the ratio might favor the 12th-seeded Jackrabbits had Gentry stuck on the roster.

Veteran South Dakota State coach Scott Nagy, who has guided the program to its third NCAA bid in five seasons, admitted Gentry would have filled in as starting point guard had senior George Martin ever suffered an extensive injury.

The biggest figure where Gentry is concerned is Martin’s 34.1 minutes a game, another team high.

After deliberating well into December, Nagy and Gentry ultimately decided the program’s best long-term interests did not involve Gentry lifting his redshirt to serve in a limited reserve role as a freshman.

Naturally, that hasn’t kept Gentry from spreading his familiar work ethic across the Brookings, S.D. campus.

For now, he helps the Jackrabbits by internalizing the opposition’s sets and running them in practice, all while challenging himself and banking extensive reps and knowledge for his own playing career.

“He’s always working on something to better his game,” Nagy said.

“He loves the gym.”

Gentry briefly played alongside another NCAA-bound East alumnus, Kendall Stephens, as a Saints sophomore in 2012-13. Gentry emerged that season while Stephens missed most of his senior campaign after suffering a torn right labrum in preseason

The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments tip off this week, and the annual inundation of games include players from Tri-Cities high schools.

St. Charles East product Kendall Stephens, now a junior at Purdue, is part of the fifth-seeded Boilermakers men’s team that will face No. 12 Arkansas-Little Rock in a Midwest Regional first-round game in Denver at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday on TBS. In the women’s tournament, Batavia’s Liza Fruendt is a sophomore guard for No. 13 Missouri State, which meets No. 4 Texas A&M at 3 p.m. Saturday in a Dallas Regional first-round game in College Station, Texas.

The game will be televised on ESPN2. practice.

Now a junior guard at Purdue, Stephens enters Thursday’s first-round game against Arkansas-Little Rock averaging 6.1 points and 1.3 rebounds over 14.2 minutes a game.

In case you’re wondering – and you’re not if you’re the ultimate

Saints superfan – South Dakota State and Purdue are on opposite sides of the NCAA bracket and could only meet for the national championship April 4.

A more feasible scenario involves Tri-Cities fans trekking to Brookings a few times a season in 2016-17 and beyond. Geneva senior Loudon Vollbrecht, a 6-foot-8 center, committed to South Dakota State in November.

Gentry and Vollbrecht grew friendly through high school and AAU ball. Gentry also maintains ties with Saints coach Pat Woods and several former East teammates.

“It’s certainly true that they keep a family atmosphere at East,” Gentry said.

The best news for the East hoops community arguably is Friday’s South Dakota State start time. No need to rush home from school for a 3:20 p.m. tip.

Music is effective medical therapy Dear Dr. K: I recently visited a friend in the hospital. During my visit, a music therapist came in and played music for her.

The idea of music therapy seems very New Age to me. Is there any evidence for it?

Dear Reader: Music therapists are accomplished musicians who use their knowledge of music and its effects to help people get through medical challenges, such as recovering from a stroke or healing after surgery. Music therapists may play music for you or with you. They even may teach you how to play an instrument.

This all sounds great. But, as you say, it also sounds pretty New Age, and you asked whether there is any evidence behind it. Actually, there is. A growing body of research attests music therapy can improve medical outcomes and quality of life in a variety of ways.

For example, music therapy: • Improves the experience of invasive procedures. Controlled clinical trials looked at people having colonoscopies, cardiac angiography and knee surgery. Those who listened to music before their procedure had reduced anxiety and a reduced need for sedatives. Those who listened to music in the operating room reported less discomfort during their procedure. Hearing music in the recovery room reduced the use of opioid painkillers.

• Restores lost speech. Stroke or traumatic brain injury can damage the region on the left side of the brain that is responsible for speech. Music therapy can help.

How? The ability to sing originates in the right side of the brain. People who are recovering from stroke or brain injury can work around the injury to the left side of their brain by first singing their thoughts. Then, gradually, they can drop the melody.

• Reduces side effects of cancer therapy.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Listening to music reduces anxiety associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It also can quell nausea and vomiting for patients receiving chemotherapy.

• Aids pain relief. Music therapy has been tested in patients with different types of pain, including intense acute pain and chronic pain. Music therapy decreases the perception of pain and reduces the amount of pain medication needed. It also helps relieve depression and gives people a better sense of control over their pain.

• Improves quality of life for dementia patients. The ability to engage with music remains intact into the later stages of dementia. Music therapy can help to recall memories, reduce agitation, assist communication and improve physical coordination. A wonderful documentary film released in 2014, “Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory,” demonstrates the value music can have in awakening memory among people with dementia. It is a memorable experience to see people who appear terminally lost to the world, barely able to communicate in words, come alive to music.

Most of the studies I refer to have used classical music and popular songs. I’m not aware of any studies using newer forms of popular music, such as punk, rap or heavy metal. Do they, too, relieve anxiety, promote wound healing and help restore speech and memory? Call me old-fashioned, but I doubt it.

But not any more.

Dr. Wallace: You said secondhand smoke is harmful both to humans and to pets. My parents both smoke in our house. Whenever they smoke inside, I go outside, but my problem is I have a bird and a dog. I usually take my dog out with me, but I can’t take my bird out. And if I’m not at home, they both have to stay in.

How bad is secondhand smoke for my pets? – Belle, Indianapolis Belle: Furry pets, such as dogs and cats, are vulnerable to secondhand smoke and may suffer from a runny nose, throat irritation and sneezing. A healthy pet can become allergic to cigarette smoke, increasing its chance of getting lung cancer. Caged pets, such as hamsters and birds, are especially prone to respiratory problems.

Let’s hope Mom and Dad realize they’re doing harm not only to you, but also to your pets when they smoke in the house. It would be wonderful if they gave up smoking, and then everybody in the house would be better off.

However, this probably is unlikely to happen, so they should be the ones who go outside to smoke.

Rex Stout, who wrote the Nero Wolfe novels, said, “To read of a detective’s daring finesse or ingenious stratagem is a rare joy.”

In today’s deal from Steve Conrad of Manhasset, New York, South is in three no-trump, faced with finesses in three suits. What is his optimum strategy?

This is the most common auction of all, leading to the most popular contract. But what is the least common contract?

South starts with five top tricks: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and one club. If both black-suit finesses are working, that would get his winner total up to nine. Or if both diamond honors are onside, that would also be good enough. But if a finesse loses, the defenders will presumably establish West’s heart suit.

Then, if West can regain the lead, he might cash too many tricks for declarer.

That suggests starting with the spade finesse, because the spade king is West’s only possible entry. But getting to the dummy for that finesse introduces other complications.

Much simpler is to take two diamond finesses. The first loses to East’s jack and a heart comes back, but South ducks that, wins the next heart, then -- key play -- runs the club queen. (Agreed, if declarer deduces who has which kings, this isn’t necessary, but it avoids guesswork.)

East takes that trick and shifts to a spade, but declarer wins with his ace, repeats the diamond finesse, and has nine tricks from one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and two clubs.

The least common contract is five no-trump, which has all of the risk for no gain.

Say this prayer nine times a day, on the eighth day your prayers will be answered. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised.
