Revelers cheer as annual St. Patrick’s Day parade rolls through St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Curbside spectator spots were in demand in St. Charles on Saturday as hundreds of people lined either side of Main Street to watch the annual St. Patrick’s Parade.

The Crum family of Elgin was among those lucky to get a spot – and set up seats – along the parade route, which stretched from Sixth Street to Fourth Avenue.

For the Crums, the 16th annual parade had special significance: it was the first-ever parade for their 4½-year-old son and 19-month-old daughter, mother Chrissy Crum said.

While his sister enjoyed the music, Connor Crum – who held a hat full of sweets – said he liked “the candy part.”

The Downtown St. Charles Partnership event featured about 80 entries, which included marching bands, bagpipes, children’s groups, local businesses and an assortment of vehicles.

The St. Charles Kiwanis, whose members regularly volunteer in the Electric Christmas and St. Patrick’s parades, served as grand marshal.

City officials – such as Mayor Ray Rogina, City Administrator Mark Koenen, aldermen and staff – also walked in the parade. The city’s banner was carried by GIS Manager Keith Nightlinger’s children, Koenen said.

He said participation in the parade is a way for the city to demonstrate support for the community.

And, Koenen said, referencing the mild, sunny weather, on a day “like today, where else would you be?”

Parade-goers agreed.

“The weather was good,” Karen Montemayor of St. Charles said. “We were happy to be out.”

Montemayor’s 7-year-old daughter, Keegan, walked in the parade with her Girl Scout troop, Montemayor said, noting it was the girl’s second time.

22 late-night permit renewals up for review Commission’s recommendations to go before council

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Liquor Control Commission today will review 22 late-night permit renewal requests from local businesses.

A total of 15 permits are for businesses seeking to stay open until 2 a.m. and the remaining 7 permits are for businesses that want stay open until 1 a.m., according to an executive summary on the renewals.

Businesses that close at midnight do not have to apply for a late-night permit.

The late-night permit system was implemented in 2014 as a result of talks that began with former St. Charles Mayor Don DeWitte about over-serving alcohol and police calls for rowdy activity in downtown St. Charles.

In a written memo to St. Charles James Keegan Mayor and Liquor CommisSt. Charles sioner Ray police chief Rogina, St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan recommended the renewal of all 22 late-night permits.

Keegan also included the number of incidents at each business requiring police services from May 1, 2014 – the start of the current licensing period – to March 6.

The decision to recommend renewal was not based solely on the number of incidents, but a review of the nature of the incidents combined with the willingness of the businesses to address those problems, Keegan wrote in the memo.

“We in no way want to discourage a liquor establishment from contacting 911 whether they are being proactive in addressing an issue before it escalates or reacting to an issue that necessitated police intervention,” Keegan wrote.

The liquor commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. today in the City Council Chambers at the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

March 28, 4,000 children age 8 and younger will scramble to collect 12,000 eggs and other Easter-related goodies on the campus’ stadium surface at Mooseheart’s Easter Egg Hunt. That collection will be complete within less than five minutes.

Mooseheart is between North Aurora and Batavia, two miles north of Interstate 88 on Route 31.

“It’s probably our quickest event, especially for the size of it,” Mooseheart Executive Director Gary Urwiler stated in a news release.

“When those 4,000 children line the football field for the final count to get the eggs, it’s quite a sight to see.”

This is the fifth annual Easter Egg Hunt at Mooseheart. Gates open at 10 a.m. before the 11 a.m. hunt, and activities continue until 1 p.m.

Those activities include face painting, crafts and a “bounce house” inside the school’s fieldhouse, which is adjacent to the stadium. In addition, a petting zoo and pony rides will be held just south of the football field. A free hot dog lunch also will be served for egg hunters and their families in the fieldhouse, and the Easter Bunny will pose for photos with children and families.

“I think the Easter Egg Hunt is a great way for us to open the doors to our campus and give people a chance to get a glimpse of what we have here, and how the Moose Fraternity supports what we do,” Urwiler stated in the release.

Children will be split into four age groups for the hunt. Children aged 1-2; 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 will collect eggs in separate areas of the football field.

Glasgow to join brothers at Michigan

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com The beginning of the Jim Harbaugh era as Michigan’s coach will dawn with a trio of Glasgows on the Wolverines’ roster.

Marmion senior Jordan Glasgow committed to Michigan as a preferred walk-on this weekend, he confirmed Sunday. He will join ranks with older brothers Graham (fifthyear senior offensive lineman) and Ryan (senior defensive lineman), both of whom are on scholarship with the Wolverines after starting as walk-ons, Jordan said.

Jordan Glasgow had visited Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, both of which options likely would have also resulted in latching on as a walk-on, at least initially.

“I felt that if I wanted to compete, compete at the highest level,” Jordan Glasgow said.

Jordan Glasgow was known more for his running back prowess at Marmion but played safety as a senior, the position he said will be his most likely spot in college. Slot receiver is another possibility in Ann Arbor.

Jordan Glasgow, an explosive and brawny, 6-foot, 205-pound multisport athlete whose football career at Marmion included injury setbacks, said he thinks he has major upside at safety considering he only played one year

in the secondary.

“My senior year was the first year I played safety,” Glasgow said. “I never played it before and I think I did pretty well, so I think getting more experience will really help, and I think my inexperience at safety really gives me a lot of opportunity [to grow].”

While having a pair of older brothers in the program – Ryan is a nose guard, Graham plays center and guard – should create somewhat of a comfort level, joining a program of Michigan’s stature nonetheless presents a massive challenge.

The rebuilding program figures to command even greater attention in the coming years under Harbaugh, the former Wolverine and Bears QB fresh off coaching the San Francisco 49ers.

“You don’t really think about how big things are really,” Jordan Glasgow said. “I’m going to college to play football but I’m going to try to play at one of the most historic programs in the nation with an NFL coach. But I’m trying not to get overwhelmed by the situation. Just think every day you have to work harder than you did last and earn what you get.”

Thibs continues with front-office compliance

All the rest and extra time off the Bulls’ front office has been stressing since training camp has made a team that – at least under coach Tom Thibodeau – has made every game a fight at this time of year more pushover than dangerous.

A 109-100 loss Sunday to the Oklahoma City Thunder was the Bulls’ fifth defeat in their past six games and kept them fourth in the Eastern Conference playoff seedings with 14 games left.

(40-28) days off Thursday and Saturday as he continues to try to counter a perception that he works his team too hard. In fact, he has done what the front office has wanted the entire time, and the results speak for themselves.

“Well, you’re heading down the stretch, so you’d like to have everyone going,” Thibodeau said when he was asked if he could recall giving one of his teams such little practice time this late in the season.

“But that’s just not the case. It is what it is. Just deal with it.”

The principal reason for all the time off was a shortage of bodies to practice with. Guard Derrick Rose (right knee), big

man Taj Gibson (left ankle) and guard Jimmy Butler (left elbow) have been sidelined by injuries.

Rose didn’t even make the three-city trip, staying in Chicago to rehab. Gibson has started practicing but is still on a day-to-day timetable. And Butler, who was expected to miss three to six weeks, has started on-the-court work.

Center Joakim Noah, however, remained on a restriction of 32 minutes. That meant he played only six minutes in the fourth quarter, when the Thunder outscored the Bulls 34-30 and outrebounded them 11-8.

“I ran out of minutes with him,” Thibodeau said when he

was asked about how he used Noah’s time. “You’ve got to keep the game together. Sometimes, a group is on a run, and sometimes, you’ve got to look at the matchup. Then you take your shot at the end. You’ve just got to use it the best way you can.”

Noah, who declined to comment after the game, finished with 15 points, seven assists and three rebounds in 31 minutes, 11 seconds. The Bulls were led by Nikola Mirotic, who scored 27 points.

As for the Thunder, it continued to be all about guard Russell Westbrook. He had 36 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

Westbrook also made his presence felt late, stealing a pass intended for Mirotic with 1:12 left and driving for a layup that gave the Thunder a 99-95 lead, then going coast-to-coast after a jumper by Pau Gasol to all but ice the game.

“This is the position we’re in,” Gasol said. “This is what we’re dealing with, and we’re trying to give our best every single day. Lately, that hasn’t really cut it as far as results go.”

The Bulls have two days before their game Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers at the United Center. No word on how much practice will go on between now and then.

Hawks have used that mindset to push them back into Central Division race

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com SAN JOSE, Calif. – His hat was teal, and his sweatshirt had a San Jose Sharks logo on it, but Ben Smith still sounded very much like a member of Joel Quenneville’s Blackhawks when he talked Saturday morning about what his new team needed to do in order to be successful.

“For us, it’s mainly being in good position and trying to find a way to play strong defense, and to create our offense from that strong defense,” Smith said.

That’s Quenneville’s mantra, his single guiding principle – defense begets offense.

Be smart and responsible in your own end, and the chances will come in the other end.

Of course, it hasn’t hurt that his roster has been loaded

over the years with high-end offensive talent, the kind of guys who can create scoring chances out of thin air.

But now that Patrick Kane, the Hawks’ driving force on offense, is sidelined until sometime in May, it’s been less of a philosophy and more of a necessity. And Quenneville is chalking up the Hawks’ unlikely 6-1-1 record dating to the game in which Kane broke his collarbone to a renewed focus on that defense-first mentality.

“We’re not looking to outscore anybody, we’re thinking [about] checking,” Quenneville said. “We won some tight ones.”

Before Saturday’s 6-2 victory over the Sharks, the Hawks had three goals in their previous three games, and had gone two straight without an evenstrength tally. The Hawks

have dropped to 14th in the league in goals per game, at a pedestrian 2.78; they were second in the league each of the past two seasons at 3.18 and 3.10, respectively. In fact, the Hawks have averaged at least three goals a game and have been in the top six in the league every season since their breakout season of 200809.

Yet they’ve clawed back into the Central Division race these past three weeks anyway. That’s because they’ve given up only seven goals in their past five games, and have allowed two or fewer goals in seven of their past eight.

“We’re just clawing to get by,” Bryan Bickell said.

The Hawks haven’t been flawless defensively, but they’ve been effective.

They’ve surrendered at least 29 shots on goal in five of their

past six games, but have done a good job of keeping most of those shots on the perimeter and from the point, not in the prime scoring area in front of the net. And when the opponents do get close, Corey Crawford has bailed out his teammates time and again. He’s 5-0-1 in his past six starts, and the one loss was a 1-0 overtime game against the high-flying New York Rangers.

“We’re playing the right way,” Quenneville said.

“We’re starting with [defense] first. And Crow has been solid as you could ever want.”

Of course, Quenneville would love for the offense to have more spurts like Saturday’s four-goal third period and make things easier on Crawford and the defense. To that end, the Hawks, as they always seem to be, have been emphasizing getting to the net

and eschewing pretty plays for ugly goals. Five of the Hawks’ six goals Saturday came either from close range, or with an effective screen in front of the net. Quenneville called it a “work in progress,” but said it’s getting better.

Besides, this time of year, goals are always down. There aren’t a lot of 5-4 barn-burners in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Quenneville has always judged his team on what it gives up, not what it gets. And with Kane out and the offense still finding its way, that defensive focus matters more now than ever.

“Defensively, we’ve been fine,” he said. “But scoring in our league’s been tough to come by as the season’s progressing, and I think that you’ve got to get some greasy and some ugly goals to be effective.”

Royal: Plenty to like about this team, starting with Pace

By ADAM JAHNS ajahns@suntimes.com Eddie Royal knew almost everybody that he needed to know. He had played for coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase and had been a top target for quarterback Jay Cutler years ago in Denver.

But it was Royal’s unsolicited praise for a person he wasn’t familiar with that might be the most important for the Bears’ future.

“It was good to meet everybody else and just get a feel for the organization,” Royal said Saturday in a phone interview.

“And the GM, Ryan Pace, is just amazing.

“His vision for the team and everything he has envisioned for the organization was exactly what I thought a direction a team needed to be going in. It felt right.”

Royal will be a big part of that new direction for the next few seasons. He signed a three-

year, $15 million contract, which includes $10 million guaranteed. It wasn’t easy leaving behind the San Diego Chargers – “It was just an emotional connection there,” Royal said – but the Bears have so many factors to believe in.

And it starts with Cutler.

Royal had kept in touch with Cutler since catching 91 passes for 980 yards and five touchdowns from him as a rookie in 2008 with the Broncos. It was their only season together, but Royal said Cutler is a great friend and seriously considered what he told him about the Bears.

It took a long, meticulous evaluation for Pace and Fox to warm up to Cutler, but, according to Royal, the mercurial quarterback is sold on the Bears’ future.

“He liked the direction that the organization was going and that meant a lot coming from the quarterback,” Royal said.

“I needed to hear that from

him. It was a lot of good things.

I’m just anxious to get going and have a good year.”

Royal gives Cutler something he didn’t have last season: a legitimate slot receiver to target on underneath routes.

It’s a role that took time for Royal to learn in San Diego leading to low production at first – “There was an adjustment period,” he said – but it’s one he said he’s mastered and enjoys playing. Royal is coming off his best season since his rookie year, making 62 catches for 778 yards and seven touchdowns in 2014.

With that in mind, Royal is excited to reunite with Gase, his position coach for two years in Denver before he became an accomplished offensive coordinator.

“I knew he was one of the up-and-coming coaches in this league, and then he got the opportunity to be offensive coordinator, everybody saw the success that he had in Denver,”

Royal said. “It was just a great opportunity to be able to play for him.”

By no means does Royal view himself as a replacement for Brandon Marshall, who was traded to the New York Jets. But Royal, who turns 29 in May, is the Bears’ most experienced receiver right now. He

considers himself a lead-by-example veteran.

“The guys that I’ve been around have not really needed to be yelling and screaming,” he said. “That’s not really my approach. … I think actions speak louder than words and that’s worked for me in the past.”

Dear Abby: My wife, “Barb,” and I have been married for 21 years, and like any married couple, we’ve had our ups and downs. We recently visited my mom, a widow in her 80s.

I noticed Mom was letting the cleanliness of her bathroom go, but Barb and I never discussed it. I teach a lot of classes during the year. The majority are on the east coast of Florida during the winter season. In the summer, I run approximately one Bridge Camp Without Tents each month somewhere in the United States.

Each typically lasts three days, and details are available at my website, phillipalderbridge.com.

During these classes, I see two mistakes far more often than any other. What do you think they are?

I will highlight both this week.

First, look at the South hand in today’s deal. West opens one heart, North makes a takeout double, and East passes. What should South bid?

In my classes, most students answer partner’s takeout double by bidding their longest suit at a minimum level, whatever their point-count. In this deal, they would bid one spade, which is so wrong. A simple bid in a suit by an unpassed hand shows 0-8 points.

With 9-11 points, they should jump in a suit. So, here they should leap to two spades. Then North will raise to four spades.

West cashes two top hearts and shifts to a diamond. South wins in the dummy (say) and cashes the two top spades, West turning up with the singleton 10. How should South continue?

Declarer mustn’t lose a club trick. It looks as though he needs the club finesse to work. However, how many high-card points are missing? Only 15, and East has already produced three. Surely West has the club queen.

South may delay the evil moment, but eventually he should cash his two top clubs, hoping for the queen to drop.
