Lazarus House selected for $1,000 grant ST. CHARLES – Lazarus House in St. Charles announced Monday it has been selected to receive a $1,000 grant as part of the Restaurant Community Grants program, which is put on by the Darden Restaurants Foundation Inc. Many Darden’s restaurants and brands worked together to award one nonprofit organization with a grant to make a greater impact in the community. The grant will finance the food services provided by Lazarus House, which – last fiscal year – served an estimated 58,000 meals to 301 people at

Geneva Park District annual Egg Hunt set

Deputy clerk suspended over campaign violation

and ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A deputy clerk in Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham’s office has been suspended without pay for five days after he sent a campaign email on the county’s server, a violation of election law, officials said.

“A provision in the campaign disclosure act states you can’t use taxpayer money for political purposes,” said Tom Newman, deputy director of campaign disclosure for the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Newman said enforcement is through the local state’s attorney.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said little on the matter in a written statement.

“We consider and review all communications that are submitted to this office,” McMahon said. “However, we do not discuss potential or pending investigations.”

At issue is a Wednesday email from Deputy Clerk Jeff Ward, sent at 9:45 a.m. using his Kane County email account, WardJeff@co.kane. il.us, to Newman regarding a correction in Cunningham’s financial disclosure statement.

“Right now, it’s not tolerat-

ed in the office and Mr. Ward is being suspended five days without pay,” Cunningham said. “It did happen. It should not have happened.”

Cunningham said Ward earns $188.31 a day, so a fiveday suspension will cost him $941.55.

Ward said he agreed that he should be suspended.

“I goofed,” he said.

In explainJeff Ward ing what happened, Ward said the State Board of Elections called the office about the financial disclosure statement, which had an error. He asked how to fix it, he said, and did so by using his county email address.

He said there was no ill or malicious intent.

“I was fixing an error,” Ward said. “In my mind, that’s what I was doing. … I made a mistake in correcting a mistake.”

Ward said Cunningham didn’t know about it until it was over.

Cunningham said Ward’s suspension began as soon as he found out about it – about 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

Dauberman Road will be closed, between Main Street and Scott Road, through March 21 because of flooding that is taking place at nearby Welch Creek and the resulting ice on the pavement.

A posted detour route will direct traffic around the closure using Main Street, Harter Road and Scott Road, according to a news release from the Kane County Division of Transportation. The closure stretches from Kaneville to the north to the Sugar Grove area to the south.

“The public is advised to follow the posted detour route around the road closure and to expect increased travel times,” the release stated.

“We apologize for the delays and increased travel times that will be caused by this emergency road closure and thank you for your continued support and cooperation.”

Lt. Pat Gengler, the spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, said there are reports of people going around the barricades. He warned that people should not do so, as “the road is closed because travel through the area is dangerous.”

St. Charles school bus damaged by BB pellets

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A school bus traveling to a St. Charles high school was damaged Wednesday by what appeared to be multiple BB pellets, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The driver reportedly told police he was heading north on Route 31 near Fieldcrest Drive in St. Charles Township at about 4 p.m. when he heard a noise that sounded like something hitting the driver’s

side window.

Four spots on the bus appeared to have been hit by BB pellets, police said. Nobody was injured.

St. Charles School District 303 spokesman Jim Blaney said no students were on the bus at the time of the incident.

The bus was going to St. Charles North High School on Red Gate Road to pick up special education students, Blaney said. He said a second bus was sent to get the students.

The bus, which was not full-sized, had a damaged

windshield, Blaney said. He said it was like it was hit by a big rock.

The school district sent a message to parents about the incident, Blaney said. The district is directing those with information to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office or St. Charles Police Department.

There are no suspect descriptions at this time, police said.

CHARLES – The annual St. Charles Tree Commission Arbor Day event is set for 4 p.m. April 25 at Lincoln Park, which is along Main Street between Fourth and Fifth streets, St. Charles. All ages are welcome to attend this annual celebration of trees. The event will include music, art, a tree raffle, tree care demonstrations and educational material for homeowners.

Those interested are invited to participate in the 2014 Tribute to Trees, using the medium of the participants’ choice – photography, sculpture, watercolor, music, dance, computer or pencil and paper – create an expression of appreciation

of trees. The work will be displayed – or, if participants would like, performed – at the Arbor Day Celebration.

Entries are due April 4, and each participant will receive a prize. All ages are welcome.

T. CHARLES – After 53 rounds, Anika Patel finally had her victory.

Patel, a fifth-grader at Cambridge Lakes Charter School in Pingree Grove, won the 2014 Kane County Regional Spelling Bee. The event was held inside the Fox Valley Repertory at the Pheasant Run Resort.

Patel, 10, beat out seven other semi-finalists to claim the top prize, which includes a seven-day trip with a parent to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. She spelled the word “rouge” correctly after Wredling Middle School sixth-grader Ayumu Seiya misspelled “Frankenstein.”

“It was very exciting,” Patel said after the competition, standing next to her parents Vipul and Minal Patel. Cambridge Lakes principal Kathy Anika Patel Poole and teacher Sandra Ludwig were also at the bee to support her.

The eight competitors had alternate rounds of spelling and vocabulary, which involved picking between two descriptions.

Patel said she liked the spelling rounds better because they were easier for her.

This was Patel’s first time in the regional bee.

She had previously won her initial classroom spelling bees in third and fourth grade, but did not advance beyond that. Studying, hard work and not giving up is what she attributed to making it to the regional bee.

Patel’s preparation involved writing down the words she got from a spellit.com word list multiple times. She would stare at the words and think about their definition before checking her answer.

During the competition, Patel would buy herself time to think about the spelling of words by asking for their definition.

While the pronouncer read the definition, she would use her finger and pretend to spell along her arm before reciting it.

Patel said she got that strategy from watching YouTube videos of students competing at the national bee.

First runner-up Seiya, 11, said he made flash cards to study all the words – the word written out on one side, and the definition on the other.

Seiya, standing next to his mother Kiyomi Seiya, said he was proud to finish in second place Thursday.

“It was fun,” Seiya said of the bee. “I got to learn new words.”

“Employees who like their job, and are happy working here, are doing it on their own time and their own free will,” Cunningham said.

“I cannot stop them from doing that on their own time.”

Cunningham, a threeterm incumbent, is seeking the Republican nomination for county clerk in Tuesday’s primary. He is being challenged by County Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles.

Davoust said he was not making it a campaign issue.

“But it’s not right,” Davoust said. “The taxpayers in Kane County deserve a better performance than this.

This starts with a strange filing that had an amount that

was incorrect on the wrong form and evolved into pretty serious misconduct.”

Davoust said campaigns have to provide contact information to the State Board of Elections, and that office knew to contact Ward at Cunningham’s office and that Ward did the campaign work on one of his breaks.

Ward’s explanation that he did the work during one of his breaks is not believable, Davoust said.

“When [Ward] answered, he took the time to write a response and identify himself as a deputy clerk and he cc’d it to Jack,” Davoust said. “Mr. Ward has put himself forward as unknowing. ... That is hard to swallow and a bit of an insult to the intelligence of anyone who is listening. I think he owes everybody a more forthright answer on this. The excuses seem to ring pretty hollow.”

North Aurora to crack down on drunken drivers KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Police Department will conduct special patrols this St. Patrick’s Day holiday to crack down on drunken drivers. Unbuckled motorists also will be ticketed.

“If you plan on drinking alcohol, designate a sober driver before the party begins,” North Aurora Police Chief David Summer said in a news release. “Be responsible, or risk a DUI.” Starting Thursday and running through Monday, the department will work overtime to catch and arrest anyone who is driving drunk, Summer said. In addition to looking for drunken drivers,

North Aurora police will be stepping up seat belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat belt usage rates are lowest, stated the release.

As to the cost of caring for the surviving animals at two undisclosed locations, Animal Control Administrator Rob Sauceda said he did not have a total accounting yet of cost to his department.

But he said most of it was for veterinary care and for building shelters and fences for the animals at their new locations.

Sauceda credited the huge outpouring of public support to provide food and other supplies to the rescued animals with keeping costs to his department down.

Sauceda said one of the mini-horses, Hercules, was euthanized because it had an untreated dental occlusion where its teeth were growing up into its sinus cavities causing an infection.

He said the horse fell down in front of animal care workers and began hemorrhaging.

“The vet said he had to put it down,” Sauceda said. “The horse was in too much pain.”

The euthanized horse brought the surviving number of animals – including rabbits, donkeys, llamas, goats and chickens – to 93.

There were two other surviving rabbits that Fiebelkorn agreed to surrender Feb. 28, Sauceda said.

The rabbits were given to new homes.

A preliminary necropsy of a mini-horse found dead at the Hampshire Township site showed it had died of starvation, Sauceda said.

The horse was 3½ to 4½ years old with zero body fat content with overgrown, untrimmed hooves, he said.

According to Sauceda’s sworn statement filed in court papers, when Animal Control served a search warrant March 3, “We were unable to remove the dead horse from the site – it was

frozen in 4 inches of water, urine and feces.”

Sauceda’s sworn statement also details actions animal control has taken with regard to Fiebelkorn and her traveling petting zoo dating back to July 2, 2008, when one burro, one pig, 10 goats and two calves were abandoned.

In another citation on July 8, animals were found with dirty water and no food.

On April 20, 2011, a sheep was found dead from lice, with a necropsy indicating owner neglect as the cause, according to the affidavit.

In the current situation, Sauceda cited an animal control warden’s assessment of Fiebelkorn’s Mini Zoo Crew: “The horses, goats, poultry, alpacas and llamas and rabbits are all malnourished and dehydrated. Some needed immediate vet care and were close to death while we were on the property.”

ST. CHARLES – A petting zoo owner charged with animal cruelty won a small reprieve Thursday, when a judge continued a forfeiture hearing on 93 surviving animals impounded by the county.

Jamie Wombacher, the attorney for Elgin resident Stacy Fiebelkorn, 34, asked Associate Kane County Judge Elizabeth Flood for the continuance so she would have time to read recent court filings by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Assistant State’s Attorney Danielle Curtiss asked Flood to require Fiebelkorn to post $36,786 as security to pay for the day-to-day care of the 93 animals impounded by animal control, if the continuance was for 30 days.

Flood set the continued forfeiture hearing for 1 p.m.

Wednesday at the Kane County Branch Court, and waived the legal requirement

for Fiebelkorn to post security to pay for the animals’ continuing care during the five days of the continuance.

Fiebelkorn is to appear in court at 9 a.m. Tuesday on the charges of animal cruelty and a violation of an animal owner’s duty to provide food and care, both misdemeanors. Both proceedings are in Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles.

Neither FieStacy belkorn nor Fiebelkorn her attorney would comment.

In total, 11 animals and a horse fetus were found dead, and 94 in need of food and water, officials said.

The horse and fetus were found on a farm near Maple Park, the rest at the Hampshire Township location, officials said.

Man enters unlocked car, charged with trespass, St. Charles police say

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles man who left his vehicle unlocked at a convenience store Wednesday exited the shop to find he had an unwanted passenger, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

The 47-year-old motorist reportedly parked his car at 7-Eleven, 1705 W. Main St., St. Charles, at about 6:20 p.m. and went inside to make a purchase. When he returned to his vehicle, Mark W. Richards III, 20, of St. Charles, was

sitting in the passenger seat, police said.

The man repeatedly ordered Richards to get out, but Richards initially refused before running across the street, police said. YellMark W. ing, Richards Richards III reportedly jumped on a snowbank. He continued to yell “incoherent ramblings” while waving his arms, police reported.

“It was evident Richards

was on some type of drugs as he was unable to answer basic questions and his answers were irrelevant to the question,” police said.

Richards reportedly told police he had ingested LSD. He was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle and disorderly conduct.

Police said Richards was unable to post bond or pay the booking fee and was taken to the Kane County Jail for bond call.

Online records Thursday indicated Richards remained in custody and was being held on $3,000 bond.

Cadence, Northwestern enter merger talks

Officials at the health care systems signed a letter of intent to enter a period of exclusive discussion for a possible merger, the release said. Cadence Health is the parent of Delnor Hospital in Geneva and Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. Northwestern Memorial HealthCare is parent to

GENEVA – The Association of School Business Officials International awarded Geneva School District 304 its Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in budget presentation, the third time the district applied for and received this award.

The award is given to school entities that have met or exceeded the Meritorious Budget Award criteria.

To earn this award, the district submitted its 2013-14 budget for review.

Geneva District 304 was one of 14 in Illinois and 130 districts internationally that received this recognition for their 2013-14 budgets.

The award “represents a significant achievement” by staff and a commitment to “meet the highest standards of school budgeting,” according to the organization in its award to District 304.

“It is quite a process to submit,” Assistant Superintendent for Business Donna Oberg said. “It is about 230 pages long. It includes all the information about the district, test scores, enrollment, staffing, budget. It’s a well-rounded, comprehensive picture of the district.”

In a prepared statement, Superintendent Kent Mutchler said the award demonstrates “the excellent work of ... Oberg, our business office staff, and the work of Steve Miller of PMA,” the district’s financial consultant.

As your Kane County circuit clerk, I know the importance of effective and efficient government service. I know, too, the absolute importance of electing candidates who stand strongest for integrity. Kevin Williams is that candidate. He is, in fact, the very personification of integrity.

In the years I’ve known him, Kevin has never been anything less than honest, hardworking and extremely capable in the administration of his professional responsibilities. And those responsibilities have been many.

Kevin has spent more than 20 years in the sheriff’s department, rising to the rank of lieutenant. Along the way, he has served as a com-

munity policing specialist, a tactical gang crimes officer and an elderly service officer. His credentials are as impressive as his reputation for helping to maintain safe streets throughout Kane County.

Can you say ‘global climate change?’

Sometimes people say something so farfetched you just chuckle and shake your head. A Donald Trump, a Rush.

Then there are those who sound as knowing as the Wizard of Oz; however, one glance behind their curtain of bombastic rhetoric, specious reasoning and edited facts reveals only a desperate man pulling levers and spouting nonsense.

For instance, the omniscient wizards might cite an anomaly to argue against a well-documented trend, the kind of logic used when relatives see boozing old Uncle Joe take a sip of water and want to believe he’s on the wagon.

This reasoning has big media knuckleheads and local letter writers proclaiming that recent cold temperatures

A Big Rock resident’s letter to the editor miraculously dismisses human blame, explaining, “Ma Nature is allowed to mix things up once and a while.” Because Arctic ice hasn’t completely melted by the “predicted” 2013, he suggests we no longer need to worry about it, along with, presumably, reduced glaciation, snow caps, etc.

Besides recommending that this letter writer stop ignoring the 97 percent of climate science papers – papers that take a position on the issue – validate manmade global warming, I suggest he read “The Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert.

RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger outlines key points that Kolbert has made, at times including quotes from her book: “ … fossil fuel use and deforestation [have] caused the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air to rise ‘by 40 percent over the last two centuries,’ while making the concentration of methane ... more than double. ...

Silly me, wasting time decrying people who scoff at scientific evidence when I should have been paying closer attention to my diction.

On another note, it surprises me that Mr. Jones assumes I’m a Democrat simply because I believe cropland desertification, extreme weather and the dearth of drinking water are connected to human pollution. His reasoning suggests that deniers of peer-reviewed scientific evidence must be Republicans! Expecting outraged GOP letters to flood opinion pages, I’ve seen nothing yet.

Late arrival bolsters bench

OOSEHEART – J.J. Odunsi is making up for lost time, on and off the court.

The Mooseheart senior sat out his sophomore and junior seasons and only joined the Red Ramblers in January this season, but there’s nothing lukewarm about his emotional investment in the team’s run to Peoria.

“He was the main one [at the supersectional] talking about ‘Hey man, we’ve got to win, we’ve got to win.’ He was the main one pumping it up, even more excited than any of us,” said junior guard Hameed Odunewu, a second cousin of Odunsi’s. “So, yeah, the guy who comes in halfway was more excited than all of us.”

Odunsi’s midseason arrival helped shore up one of Mooseheart’s main deficiencies – depth. He quickly emerged as the team’s top substitute, and likely will factor in heavily this weekend as the Ramblers pursue their first state championship.

Mooseheart faces Mendon United in an IHSA Class 1A state semifinal Friday afternoon at the Peoria Civic Center.

Odunsi was part of Mooseheart’s basketball program as a freshman, when he tore his meniscus during a JV game. Odunsi considered himself a football-first athlete and was crushed when he suffered a serious injury playing basketball.

Odunsi said that was the main reason he took an extended hiatus from basketball, not any misgivings toward coach Ron Ahrens or the basketball program.

“He probably thinks that but I didn’t have anything against coach, honestly,” Odunsi said. “It was just the fact that I got hurt away from the sport that I liked more, so it really hurt me. If I got hurt in football it would have been fine for me because I love playing football, but it was

I couldn’t take it, mentally.”

Ahrens and the players occasionally checked in with Odunsi during the past couple years, but the 6-foot3 guard remained firm in choosing to watch games from the bleachers, not Mooseheart’s bench. Finally, with his senior year ticking away, Odunsi changed his mind. He joined the team in early January, having missed the season’s first eight games.

“He was being stubborn,” Odunewu said. “He was like,

‘Man, I don’t want to play basketball,’ but then you would see him at the gym playing basketball with everybody else, just playing rec ball. We were like, ‘C’mon, dude, you could help us out,’ and he decided to do it. He was being real stubborn, but he ended up wanting to do it, and I’m glad he did.”

So is Ahrens, who praises Odunsi’s athleticism, ball-handling and rugged perimeter defense. Odunsi has made his presence felt this postseason, notching a game-sealing steal against Newark in a tense regional final and adding nine points in Tuesday’s supersectional win against Lanark Eastland.

He’s also proven to be one of

the best free-throw shooters on a team that struggles at the line, converting 6 of 8 in the Eastland win.

Ahrens said Odunsi has made major strides as he’s shed his basketball rust.

“If he would have played all four years, he’d have been a starter,” Ahrens said. “I firmly believe that because he’s that talented. He’s been a great addition for us.”

Odunsi has Nigerian family background but grew up in south suburban Calumet City. He came to Mooseheart as a freshman and has played receiver/defensive back all four years for Mooseheart’s football team. He is considering attending college at Illinois State, but likely won’t compete athletically.

While Odunsi’s contributions have been valuable, Mooseheart is best known for its trio of South Sudanese transfer students – top scorers Makur Puou (6-foot-10) and Mangisto Deng (6-7), plus starting center Akim Nyang, who stands 7-1.

Odunsi said it wasn’t the chance to become a state champion that coaxed him back to basketball.

“I think I would have come back either way because it was my senior year, and I did miss basketball, I really did, but I didn’t really tell anyone that I did,” Odunsi said. “Whether it would have been a state championship-contending team or not, I would have come back because it’s my senior year.”

Odunsi wears jersey No. 25, which he said is a tribute to close friend and 2013 Mooseheart graduate Kevin Gbadego.

It’s this season’s Ramblers, though, to whom Odunsi feels a debt of gratitude for their acceptance.

“I haven’t told coach, but I really do thank him for allowing me to come back, and my teammates, because he did have to ask them whether they wanted me back or not,” Odunsi said. “So I appreciate them, and thank them all for that.”

Geneva (25-5) actually has fewer losses than Benet (22-7) but the Redwings have played one of the most grueling schedules in the state, and have won each of their first three postseason games by double figures.

Benet’s marquee player is bruising, 6-foot-9 Xavier recruit Sean O’Mara, meaning Geneva posts Loudon Vollbrecht and Mike Landi will likely need to put their 10 combined fouls to good use.

“O’Mara’s a great player, but we’re going to be ready for that [game],” said Geneva senior Chris Parrilli, who knows some of Benet’s players through the Mercury Elite AAU program. “We know we can handle anything now.”

AURORA – The sixth-seeded Geneva boys basketball team has taken down the No. 3 and 2 seeds in the 23team IHSA Class 4A East Aurora Sectional in its last two outings.

The surging Vikings’ degree of difficulty only rises tonight as No. 1 seed Benet provides the opposition in the sectional championship game.

After winning its first regional title since 1986 last week – defeating host Plainfield East, then Bolingbrook – the Vikings’ season already was a resounding success, and coach Phil Ralston’s team added another layer of luster with Wednesday’s thrilling, 7068 sectional semifinal win over West Aurora.

“Every game that we’ve had [past regionals] is gravy,” Ralston said. “I like gravy. I like getting extra helpings of gravy. So this is a gravy game to us [against Benet]. It’s all this is. It’s us going out there, we’re going to play, have fun.

“Everything we’ve done in the offseason was to get out there and play on

“From my standpoint, all the pressure’s on Benet,” Ralston said. “For us, we’re just going out there and having fun. We’re going to compete and have fun. That’s all we’re doing.”

The Vikings’ prospects for upending a third straight higher seed – and earning a spot in Tuesday’s Hinsdale Central Supersectional – would be boosted if junior guard Pace Temple can maintain his offensive surge.

Temple scored a career high 24 points in Friday’s win against Bolingbrook, then pumped in 19 more in the West Aurora win. Temple, who came off the bench for much of the season, is providing Geneva another quality secondary scoring threat behind standout junior Nate Navigato.

“That’s more gravy for Pace,” Ralston said of Temple’s scoring uptick. “ … His defense is so outstanding. You saw it [against West Aurora].

Tell me of a better on-the-ball defender right now. I’m not sure you could come up with one.”

Hang around the ISO Saints at practices, games – even the school halls – and an appropriate catchphrase shoots to mind: “Spread the energy.”

A group making its first trip to the state’s Special Olympics team basketball competition after winning last month’s Area 2 tournament doesn’t lack for good vibes.

“It makes it extremely easy on our end,” Saints head coach Donna Wisely said. “It makes you want to be there and be part of it. ‘Why are they excited?’ and how to help maintain that motivation. It’s awesome.”

Fourteen players participate on the basketball team, and about 20 are in a year-long athletics group that also competes in track, aquatics and bowling.

In the early 2000s, Winiarski said, District 303 did not operate classes for cognitively impaired students, which instead were led by the Mid-Val-

ley Special Education Cooperative and housed in district facilities.

Winiarski, active in special education since she attended Stagg, has since watched everything grow: Population, interest, support.

The ISO Saints weren’t even the ISO Saints until a few years ago, having only enough students to enter the state’s individual basketball competition – something akin to an obstacle course of dribbling,

passing and shooting.

“Pure joy the whole time,” Winiarski said. “They get down if they lose, you know, if they don’t make a shot that they want, but they’re always supporting each other and always keeping them up and they’re enthusiastic. They’re telling each other they did a good job, or, ‘You’ll get it next time.’ ” They’re hearing those words during occasional practices with East’s girls and boys basketball teams, too, along with a core group of peer partners who volunteer time.

East is set to play the Lindblom Eagles at 4 p.m. today at Illinois State’s Horton Fieldhouse in Normal. Tournament games also are taking place at Illinois Wesleyan in adjacent Bloomington. Today’s result determines the team’s Saturday medal round track at Horton.

Should the ISO Saints keep winning – their tournament resume already includes a January victory against the East boys – possible national and world competition would await.

ill Shanel took swimming lessons from Casey Dauw growing up.

Three weeks ago, Shanel broke Dauw’s Norris Center pool record in the 200-yard individual medley.

Joe Cabel gave Shanel swimming lessons during those formative years, too.

On Wednesday, Cabel beamed about accompanying the high school senior he still mentors to the Illinois Swimming Coaches Association all-state banquet in Glen Ellyn.

Shanel capped his St. Charles East career with a sixth-place swim in the 200yard individual medley and a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle at the IHSA state meet in Evanston earlier this month. The Kane County Chronicle Boys Swimmer of the Year didn’t completely realize it then, but much had come full-circle.

“Everybody always says high school goes so fast and enjoy it while you’re there,” Shanel said. “I never really agreed with that as it was going on; the days seemed to go forever. But as you think about it more, the four years do seem like they just zip by. ... I’m definitely, definitely satisfied.”

As his Saints swan song reached its closing notes this season, Shanel took to self-deprecatingly calling himself the “caboose” of a well-established swimming family. He’s set to join the proverbial next car – older sister Ashley – and compete at NCAA Division II Truman (Mo.) State next fall.

The duo that got the Shanels on track with the sport, parents Bill and Susan, met as collegiate swimmers at Indiana. Will Shanel’s mother attended the same Bloomington, Ind., high school as Cabel’s wife, Jean, and the two reconnected at Salerno’s on the Fox years later.

Enjoying a night out with Susan late in her pregnancy, the Shanels noticed the Cabels in the restaurant, remarked about how they were talking with the Saints’ coach and Will was born a few days later.

Or something like that.

“There was a connection before we got here, and we didn’t even know it,” Cabel said.

“I watched him learn to swim and become an All-American.”

Shanel met All-American qualifying standards for both events, earning personal-best times in the 200 IM (1:52.77) and 500 free (4:34.79) at the state preliminaries in Evanston.

Battling a slight illness during finals the next afternoon, he was a tad off the pace in both races – 1:53.08 and 4:36.66, respectively – but emerged from the pool with no regrets and little stamina.

That’s always the aim.

“When you get to the meet,” Shanel said, “my mentality of it all is to give it whatever you’ve got, and as long as you get out of that pool doing that then you can’t be unhappy with whatever you did, whether you broke the world record or you got disqualified.”

Shanel trimmed nearly 16 seconds from his 500 free prelim time as a freshman in 2011 and enjoyed a significantly better state meet than last season, when he took eighth in the 200 IM and was part of an 11th-place swim in the 200 freestyle relay.

“Dialed in, definitely, at sectionals and state,” Cabel said.

Last-minute lineup shuffling took Shanel out of the state series rotation in the 500 free last season.

Shanel’s ultimate goal – eclipsing his dad’s top 500 free time of 4:31.13 at St. Charles in the early 1980s – was left unfulfilled, although Shanel said that doesn’t particularly gall him. It’s hard for Shanel to figure he missed out on anything given all the friendships and memories he gained.

One of those bonds dates back to those first swimming lessons in Cabel’s backyard.

Fellow Saints senior Nick Wellman was there, too, and relished being on hand this season as East earned its first sectional title since 2002.

Wellman was even geeked when Shanel tabbed him for one of the unsung jobs of swimming – holding and maneuvering the flip cards during the 500 free.

“Will and I are practically brothers,” Wellman said.

“We’ve been together every step of the way.”

Even with the “caboose” remark on the table, Shanel ultimately knows he’ll always be part of a deep-

ly-connected fraternity of St. Charles swimmers at both the high school and club levels.

Next week, he’ll join a co-ed contingent of St. Charles Swim Team athletes traveling to the National Club Swimming Association Championships in Orlando, Fla. Cabel’s brother, Jon, is SCST’s co-head coach, augmenting the connection between the Cabels and Shanels.

Naturally, that history provided conversation fodder as the group sat together at Wednesday’s banquet, Will “impeccably” dressed in Saints orange and black, as Joe Cabel saw it.

“My perspective going in as a freshman, it’s, ‘OK I’ve known coach Joe all the way along,’ ” Shanel said. “But I never realized until now just how far things go back, and how much families – not just our families, but St. Charles families in general – have that bond.

“It’s fun to see all that stuff come out.”

Among the often repeated messages circulating this week: 100 years for Wrigley Field and 25 years for the World Wide Web. So, a sentimental salute to the ballpark and we curiously hopeful spectators. Will we ever forget Ernie Banks, Hank Sauer, Roy Smalley (Terwilliger to Smalley to Addison Street), Andy Pafko and all the “Wait till next years.”

Now on to the Web – the big enchilada.

Inevitably, there’s good news and bad news. Commonly held beliefs, such as it takes up too much time; the loss of faceto-face interaction; the loss of privacy; access to illicit and damaging messages; and technology phobias and rage.

Which reminds me of two of my recent “oops” that need correction. Note that spellcheck cannot be ample protection against careless proof reading.

So, make that Bach instead of bass in citing Jeff Hunt’s selection.

Alas, one of Albert Vanthournout’s uncles was left out by me in his litany of Valentine-worthy family supporters.

MAPLE PARK – Local farmer John Biddle has dedicated a $2,500 donation to the Maple Park Family Fund via America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, which supports rural communities by offering farmers the chance to win $2,500 for their favorite local, nonprofit organization.

America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, is part of the America’s Farmers initiative, which highlights and celebrates the important contributions of farmers like Biddle.

The donation will help fund the wish lists of families and children.

Wish lists include winter coats, snow pants, hats, gloves, clothes, gas and food gift cards, and medicine.

The group also helps purchase

school supplies for children and fills homes with sheets, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene supplies.

“Maple Park is a small town and there are plenty of people in need,” said Biddle in a news release. “It’s wonderful to be able to give back to my community.”

America’s Farmers Grow Communities works directly with farmers to support nonprofit organizations, like the Maple Park Family Fund, that are doing work in the community, the release states.

Many might have guessed that my prime possession was an office with a view, elevator access and a well-tended coffee station. Guess again.

There was the mainframe and Steve’s open-door office about two dozen giant steps down the hallway.

We are both retired now.

Sometimes just before the stage of tossing the Dell out the window, I send Steve a telepathic message. I presume he is tied up being a deacon at his church and is talking with our Lord.

This week on Facebook many shared the photos of the proud teams from Cheer Alliance in St. Charles. They had gone to Tennessee last weekend for a competition and came back knowing they had done their best. Got a great

view of my granddaughter, Mazy, flying off the top of a formation.

Finally, top this for a wellearned celebration this weekend. John Wredling, grand marshall of the St. Patrick’s Parade on Saturday, turns 100 on Sunday.

Many have reached that benchmark. Few have had such a distinguished and community-spirited life.

Let’s turn out on Main Street to salute him and be in the light of his always smiling face.

Robotics team heading to regional competitions

The Geneva High School Robotics team will head to regional competitions in Cleveland and Chicago, respectively, March 20 through 22 and April 3 through 5. Geneva Robovikes will go head-to-head with other high school robots in this year’s Aerial Assist challenge. The team will join nearly 2,300 teams from 17 countries to build robots, program scenarios and amass strategies for a competition that was founded to help promote interest in science and engineering for high-schoolers.

Patriot revels in off-road adventures

In 2007 Jeep put the Liberty to rest and replaced it with the Compass and Patriot compact four-door, five-passenger, unibody front- or four-wheel-drive sport utility vehicles.

Virtual twins in makeup, the Patriot with a locking center differential, multiple tow hooks and undercarriage protection looks like – and is – the serious off-roader of the two.

The stylish Compass shares an 8.1-inch ground clearance with the broader-faced Patriot, as well as optional four-wheeldrive, but has little off-roading pretensions.

They virtually share the same powerplant, inside and outside dimensions, and Jeep’s iconic waterfall grille. Except for the grille, exteriors differ as the Compass is more rounded to look like a sedan and the Patriot more boxy to look like a typical Jeep, such as the ever-popular Wrangler.

The powerplants they share include a 2-liter, 158-horsepower or 2.4-liter, 172-horsepower four-cylinder engine. A fivespeed manual can be replaced by a six-speed automatic transmission. The automatic is new for 2014 and replaces a continuously variable transmission that received numerous complaints for sluggishness.

Compass and Patriot are offered in Sport, Latitude and Limited trim levels. For the Compass, this means prices begin at $18,595 for a Sport and rise to $27,895 for a Limited.

For the Patriot prices start at $15,995 for a front-wheeldrive Sport and top out at $26,395 for a four-wheel-drive Limited. Options would push the price up, of course. Patriots are transformed into true off-roaders at that pushed-up price.

A recently tested Latitude model is an example. Replacing two-wheel with fourwheel-drive required a 2.4-liter instead of a 2-liter engine and

raised the asking price from $20,495 to $23,895. Three tow hooks (two front, one rear) came in a $795 package that also included daytime running lamps, a block heater, all-terrain – instead of all-season – 17-inch tires and thicker floor mats. The full-time, fourwheel-drive system with lock mode completed the transformation into a true off-roader.

In the lexicon of off-roading literature, the Patriot Latitude became an official trail-rated four-wheeler. It should ford 19-inch deep streams, descend steep hills with automatic help of electronic controls (brake and engine), and offer a strong ride with rebound springs and higher damping rates. During the test week, the Patriot easily maneuvered across rough terrain including snow-covered fields.

Fuel usage should, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, average 23 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving.

During the test week, the combined mpg was 22.4. Regular unleaded fuel is recommended.

Inside the Patriot, seats are wide and supportive and there is a feeling of roominess. This feeling is enhanced by a sensible instrument layout, an adjustable leather-clad steering wheel, and an open storage bin above a lockable glove box. If there is a complaint, it is with the front bucket seats, which do not ratchet back far enough for taller occupants. For anyone 6 feet tall or a few inches taller, the legroom is OK. The cabin is fairly tight. Outside noises do not distract.

Amenities include the basics, such as power exterior mirrors, express windows, door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, air conditioning, heated front seats, a comprehensive sound system, 12- and 115-volt outlets and a flat floor for 53.5 cubic feet

In the small, relatively inexpensive SUV off-roading market, the option-equipped Patriot is a winner. Of course, for Jeep enthusiasts the Wrangler still rules the roads and off-roads.

‘Grand Budapest Hotel’ is Wes Anderson at his best

By DANA BARBUTO The Patriot Ledger Writer-director Wes Anderson’s madcap confection “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is easily the fastidious filmmaker’s best. It’s chock full of his signature attention to detail, strong visual style and clever irony, and blessed with an all-star ensemble.

The talented field populating “Budapest” – including many of Anderson’s regular collaborators, such as Edward Norton, Owen Wilson and Bill Murray – is highlighted by a career-best performance from Ralph Fiennes.

Who knew Lord Voldemort could be so suave, sincere, bawdy and funny in the same moment? As Monsieur Gustave, the legendary concierge at the Grand Budapest Hotel, Fiennes balances the character’s smug superiority with just the right amount of sentiment to make you root for him, despite some questionable morals.

He’s an Old World player (as in gigolo) who’s a bit particular, and enjoys bedding aged female guests of the opulent pink palace located in a spa town in the fictional Eastern European republic of Zubrowka. The ever-attentive concierge digs his dowagers – the richer, the older, the more superficial, the better.

Set mainly in the period between the two world wars, Anderson’s story twists through time. The narrative begins in 1968 with an “interestingly old fellow,” Mr. Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham), recounting to Jude Law’s young writer how he came to own the now-doomed hotel.

From there, the action rewinds to 1932, when Gustave’s adventures get under way in earnest after the death of one of those dowagers (an unrecognizable Tilda Swinton). Gustave and his sad-eyed Lobby Boy protege, Zero (terrific newcomer Tony Revolori), get mixed up in the theft of her priceless Renaissance painting, irreverently titled “Boy With Apple.” A battle with her demented family over their

The result is one eccentric scenario and character after the next being introduced in Anderson’s layered narrative. Each actor is clearly having their cake from the film’s fictional bakery, Mendls, and eating it, too.

In full beard, moustache and thick-rimmed glasses Jeff Goldblum plays the stern family lawyer with the ill-fated Persian cat. Adrien Brody is the villainous son. Willem Defoe is the family’s leather-clad muscle and Mathieu Amalric the odd butler.

Harvey Keitel in prison tats is always a fun cameo.

In one of the film’s running gags, Anderson depicts a network of concierges from rival hotels who operate like an underground railway, helping Gustave and Zero escape pursuit from Norton’s stiff police officer and to keep one step ahead of the dowager’s crazy clan. Stops include run-ins at a monastery, a toboggan chase and a

grand shoot-out in the hotel, all moved along by Alexandre Desplat’s sumptuous score.

Absurd? Definitely. But that’s the appeal. In Anderson’s (“Rushmore,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Moonrise Kingdom”) hands a pedestrian-plotted caper flick flourishes into a poignant yarn about the unlikely bromance between Gustave and Zero. Theirs is a bond that can’t break as Gustave grooms and protects Zero.

Together, they make you want to book a long stay at “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

Exercise releases chemicals to improve heart health

Dear Doctor K: I’ve heard it many times: Regular exercise helps prevent cardiovascular disease. But how does it do that?

Dear Reader: First, let’s define terms, to be sure we’re all on the same page. “Cardiovascular disease” (CVD) is a catch-all term. It includes heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure (hypertension), atherosclerosis and heart failure.

Regular (not just occasional) exercise improves cardiovascular health in a number of ways: •฀Exercise฀lowers฀blood฀pressure. High blood pressure increases the risk of CVD as well as many other health problems. Regular exercise lowers blood pressure, even in people whose blood pressure is normal.

•฀Exercise฀prevents฀plaque฀ buildup. Atherosclerosis is the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) inside the walls of arteries.

Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to all of the organs of the body. Plaques are filled primarily with LDL cholesterol – “bad cholesterol.”

They can narrow blood vessels and block oxygen-rich blood from reaching the body’s organs, including the heart and the brain.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff •฀Exercise฀increases฀levels฀of฀ HDL cholesterol – “good cholesterol.” HDL helps prevent fat accumulation in artery walls. Exercise also lowers levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, another type of fat.

•฀Exercise฀protects฀arteries.฀ Artery walls are lined with a very thin layer of cells known as the endothelium. In healthy arteries, the endothelium produces chemicals that cause the artery walls to relax. That makes the arteries grow wider, and that helps blood to flow through them. As you age, the endothelium loses some ability to secrete these chemicals. As a result, an artery in which blood flow is partially blocked by a plaque is less able to widen and help increase the flow of blood. Exercise helps counter this process.

•฀Exercise฀makes฀clots฀less฀ likely. Plaques have caps made of fibers. These caps normally hold in the fatty material that is inside the plaque. However, some plaques are “vulnerable”: The cap can rupture, causing the fat to spill into the inside of the artery. This

causes a blood clot to form that blocks the flow of blood.

A big part of every blood clot are little cell fragments in the blood called platelets. They stick together and form a clot. Regular exercise causes platelets to be less “sticky,” making it less likely that blood will clot. Exercise also encourages your body to release substances that break down clots.

•฀Exercise฀promotes฀new฀small฀ arteries in the heart. Aerobic exercise increases your body’s demand for oxygen-rich blood. In response, your body may cause small arteries in the heart to grow larger, or even to create new ones. If an artery were to become blocked in the future, blood could continue flowing to the heart through these alternate blood vessels.

How does regular exercise do all this? Recent research, much of it here at Harvard Medical School, has shown that regular exercise causes muscle and fat cells to release chemicals that travel through the blood to other organs.

These chemical signals produce the healthy changes.

Dr. Wallace: Last month I went to my best friend’s funeral. She and her boyfriend were celebrating his 18th birthday and had driven to a nearby town to have dinner. On their way home the car ran off the road, struck a tree and both of them were killed instantly. The investigation determined that the accident was caused by excessive speed and alcohol consumption.

This young man was not even old enough to be drinking alcohol and one wonders how he was able to get it in the first place.

When will these teenagers ever learn that drinking has nothing to offer but heartache, both for themselves and for others? – Heartbroken, St. Paul, Minn.

Dear Heartbroken: The sad fact is that alcohol is readily available for those teens who choose to use it for many different reasons.

It’s difficult to teach that alcohol is harmful and not acceptable when as a society we sell the stuff by the barrel. How many teens think it’s OK to drink because they observe their parents consuming alcohol in the home? And they think if Mom and Dad drink, it must be OK. Statistics provided by the National Council on Alcoholism show that 93 percent of all high school seniors have tried alcohol; 66 percent say they drink once a month; and 5 percent admit to being daily drinkers. Over one-half of high school seniors who drink started drinking before ninth grade.

Although drivers under 21 make up only 10 percent of the motoring population, youthful drivers account for more than 25 percent of alcohol-related highway

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace fatalities. Alcohol-related traffic accidents are the No. 1 killer of those ages 15 to 24.

Abstaining from alcohol is a way of life and this philosophy must be nourished in the home by wise, loving parents.

Dr. Wallace: One last word on forced music lessons – parents often insist, even when the child doesn’t enjoy the experience. I have three daughters and the one in the middle is now a music teacher. In the fourth grade she signed herself up for piano lessons at school and came home with a cardboard keyboard.

Soon my husband and I rented a piano to see if she, indeed, was serious about her music.

She was, and we then purchased a piano and found an excellent piano teacher. Our middle daughter flourished, and music has always played an important role in her life and always will.

Her two well-adjusted and happy sisters had, and still have, no interest in the piano (even though they had the same opportunity) and I doubt seriously they ever will.

Should parents demand that their children take music lessons? The answer is a resounding yes – but only if the desire and talent is evident. – Mother, Des Moines, Iowa Dear Mother: You are a very wise parent.

Dear Abby: My sister has children younger than mine, but the kids all play together frequently.

She recently caught them involved in a game of “truth or dare” and a couple of the kids had no clothes on.

While I was surprised to hear it and have spoken to my children about it, it seems to me to be one of those games that kids play. My sister insists it’s about dominance and sex and refuses to let my kids play with hers any longer.

I’m heartbroken over her reaction and don’t know how to respond. We barely speak anymore. What do you think? – Just A Game? In Iowa Dear Just A Game: Whether what happened was because of natural curiosity or about “dominance” would depend on the ages of the children involved. After South opened one notrump, North used a four-level Texas transfer to get his partner to play in four hearts. This allowed the opening lead to come around to the strong hand, rather than through it.

Probably South’s first thought is to take the finesses in each black suit. But there is a safer plan. What did West lead from in diamonds?

It was surely from queenthird or queen-fourth. If so, when declarer ruffs a diamond on the board, he either establishes his diamond jack as a trick or sets up an endplay.

South, after winning the third trick with his club ace, should ruff a diamond high on the board and draw trumps ending in his hand. Then he leads the diamond jack. Yes, West covers with his queen, but declarer calmly discards a black-suit card from the dummy.

If West returns a spade, South takes two spades, six hearts and two clubs. If West leads back a club, declarer wins one spade, six hearts and three clubs. South’s opponent comes to his rescue.

Distribution Center/Contract Manager - Full Time We are seeking qualified applicants for full time manager positions to assist in the distribution of local newspapers in the Kane and McHenry counties.

Work directly with independent contractors to ensure the daily effective, efficient and timely delivery of newspapers and other related materials.

Assist in delivering open/down routes in geographic area.

Ensure customer service goal is attained in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Resolve service and interpersonal issues through personal contact with customers, carriers, and Distribution Center Associates.

Recruit, screen, select, contract, advise & terminate contracts, when necessary, of independent contract carriers Maintain responsibility for the opening and closing procedures and operations of the distribution center, route management, and the proper distribution of all newspapers, inserts and other related materials to the contract carriers.

Ensure all routes are covered regardless of independent contract carrier issues or situations such as car problems, illness, weather, etc.

Redeliver to customers newspapers, Vacation Pacs or any other items as required.

Evaluate routes to determine rate and number of subscribers.

Analyze, design and implement formation of routes on an ongoing basis.

The objective being to meet service criteria in the most cost effective manner.

Administer all single copy sales procedures.

Required experience includes: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Some college preferred but not required. Work experience that demonstrates competency in managing multiple priorities and includes delivery of newspapers. Must have reliable vehicle, proof of insurance and a valid driver's license.
