Last week, I spent some time photographing the trial of Shadwick King, who is accused of killing his wife, Kathleen M. King, 32.

It’s the third court case that I have had the privilege of

witnessing, but the first actual trial with a jury.

Being in court has definitely been a learning experience.

I knew it would be different from how trials are depicted in TV and movies. But – to be

honest – it’s kind of what I expected.

Like in journalism, attorneys for both the prosecution and defense want the truth to be heard.

The Kathleen King text messages read in court did not contain any direct or indirect references to Shadwick King. Prosecutors said a separate Facebook message sent at 5:15 a.m. July 6 from Kathleen King to the man using a Kindle device that said “If you get odd phone calls – he took my phone” was in reference to Shadwick King.

The defense will continue to call witnesses Friday morning.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Shadwick King’s defense attorneys Thursday afternoon began to call witnesses at his jury trial after prosecutors rested their case.

A few residents from Shadwick King’s eastside Geneva neighborhood testified they did not Shadwick King see him or his Dodge Durango on the morning of July 6.

About 6:39 a.m. that morning, Kathleen King’s body was found partially on nearby railroad tracks south of the neighborhood.

Shadwick King was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in his wife’s death.

“There is zero evidence at the [King] home linking Mr. King to any offense,” Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress said Thursday.

Judge James Hallock denied Childress’ motion Thursday for him to direct a verdict of not guilty in the case. In a brief response before Hallock’s decision, Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams said the state had met

REGIONAL CHAMPION Hoffman Estates student wins Kane County Spelling Bee

With that, the Lincoln Elementary School fifth-grader on Thursday became the 2015 Kane County Regional Spelling Bee champion, winning a seven-day trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. He beat out seven other participants in the competition, held at Pheasant Run Main Stage in St. Charles.

He admitted his nerves were a little frayed during the spelling bee.

“I was nervous a little bit, but I’m excited right now,” said the Hoffman Estates student. “I’ve been studying since December.”

The trip is sponsored by Camp Commotion and the Kane County Chronicle. The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be from May 24 to 29.

Contestants were tested on such words as linden, potash and amicable.

Besides being tested on their spelling abilities, contestants also were asked the meanings of different words.

First runner up was Rohith Sanjay of Sycamore Trails Elementary School in Bartlett.

“We are always very excited to be a part of the Kane County Regional Spelling Bee,” said Jim Ringness, general manager for Shaw Media’s Kane County operation. “It is tied into literacy, and educating our youth. To send these deserving winners to Washington, D.C., to compete in representing Kane County is a great tribute for us. We’re glad to be a part of it.”

Woman to serve seven years for heroin death KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A South Elgin woman learned this week she must serve several years in prison for supplying heroin to an acquaintance who died from ingesting it.

Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles on Wednesday sentenced Andrea R. Nielsen, 25, to seven years Andrea in the Illinois R. Nielsen Department of Corrections, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Under Illinois law, Nielsen must serve at least 75 percent of the sentence. She will receive credit for at least 707 days served in Kane County Jail, where she has been held since her arrest, according to the release.

A Kane County jury convicted her Jan. 28 of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony that is committed when someone unlawfully delivers a controlled substance to another person, and that person’s death is caused by ingesting the drugs, the release

states.

“Heroin destroys families and lives,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon stated in the release. “It is an epidemic across the Chicago area. Those who use it or provide it to others either learn too late about its consequences or don’t care. Let this case be a painful reminder of the dangers of heroin use.”

Prosecutors presented evidence that showed Abbey Nordmeyer, 24, of South Elgin contacted Nielsen on April 4, 2013, and asked her to bring heroin.

According to the release, Nielsen and her co-defendant Nicholas Allen, 23, of Batavia, had driven to Chicago earlier and bought heroin. They then went to Nordmeyer’s residence, where the three ingested the drug and went to sleep.

Nordmeyer was dead when Allen and Nielsen awoke, according to the release.

An autopsy determined Nordmeyer died of a heroin overdose.

Last year, Allen agreed to a sentence of eight years in prison in exchange for a guilty plea to drug-induced homicide.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Nicholas Gaeke and Debra Bree prosecuted the case.

Lower fuel costs contribute to higher District 303 tax increase

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles School District 303 Board has nixed its plan to proceed with an average overall tax increase of 1.5 percent.

Instead, the tax increase will be higher. Blame it on the low gas prices.

Chief Financial Officer Seth Chapman said December’s sharp decrease at the pump dramatically affected the consumer-price index, which plays a role in school budgets in Illinois.

The Property Tax Extension Limitation Law limits increases to the levy to whichever is less: the CPI or 5 percent.

In early December, the school board adopted the 2014 levy and backed a resolution stating its intent to abate the debt service so the overall increase for taxpayers would be limited to, on average, 1.5 percent or less.

“And then things changed very dramatically,” Chapman said.

He said the decisions in December were based on the assumption of a 2.1 percent CPI, which later dropped to 0.8 percent.

“Without question, the drop in fuel prices weighed it down,” he said.

Although the largest impact of the 0.8 percent CPI won’t be felt until the 2016-17 budget,

Chapman said the original abatement plan was revised as a proactive measure.

Monday, the board approved an abatement of $1,031,756, Chapman said. On average, he said, the average taxpayer in District 303 will see a 2 percent increase in the school district portion of their taxes.

“It’s still much better progress than in prior years,” he said, noting increases in recent years were at 2.5 percent.

“All of the board members and administration would have loved to keep it lower,” he said, “but we still have to maintain the expectations of the community in terms of education.”

Sheriff’s office budget challenge remains

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A custom budget performance report for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office – which recently forfeited revenue for housing federal inmates – shows the department is, so far, on target, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick told County Board members Thursday.

But, he warned the Judicial and Public Safety Committee, “There is still definitely a challenge ahead.”

The Kane County Board has been working since January to address the financial implications of Sheriff Donald Kramer’s decision to reduce the number of federal inmates housed at the jail.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service program was expected to generate $2.5 million.

Revenue from December and January totaled $231,487, leaving an anticipated revenue shortfall of $2,269,000.

The County Board approved cuts in February and March that reduced the shortfall to $500,000.

The budget report presented Thursday was calculated to reflect where the sheriff’s office should be if the budget amendments had been in effect from the beginning of the fiscal year.

As of Feb. 28, he said, total revenues were about $325,000 below budget, and total expenditures

Village officials Thursday included the information, provided by the Kane County Clerk’s Office, as part of their packet previewing the next Elburn Village Board meeting, which is set for 6:45 p.m. Mon-

day. The discussion is scheduled to be part of the Committee of the Whole meeting that follows the board meeting.

Elburn officials have discussed the idea of putting a referendum on the ballot to specifically fund police pensions. A previous referendum attempt failed in 2012. When the village reached 5,000 residents, it became necessary to create and fund a new police pension system.

When a village’s population reaches 5,000 in the state, the village no longer can fund its police pensions through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.

There would be a cost of $11,038 for election judges, $5,000 for support for the voting system, $5,000 listed under “Pollbook,” and $4,380 for the cost of overtime for union employees.

Other costs include $2,200 for the publication of polling sites, information, dates and hours; $1,500 for supplies; $1,000 for cellphones for tech judges and “Mifi for Poll-

book;” $646.91 for “trucks EV and ED;” $450 for zone managers; $250 for truck drivers; $200 for gas for trucks; $150 for costs of printing emergency ballots; $120 for polling sites; and $120 for the cost of mailing absentee ballots.

The information noted there would be two polling sites – the Town and Country Public Library and Fox Valley Christian Church. The election would require 22 judges, one zone manager, four election workers, one truck and one truck driver.

Among other issues to be discussed at Monday’s meeting will be the next step in the budget process, as well as several items from the Elburn Public Works Department.

During Wednesday’s season finale of the A&E docu-series “Donnie Loves Jenny,” they were shown discussing the purchase of a house in St. Charles.

“Donnie Loves Jenny” follows McCarthy and Wahlberg from their wedding at the Hotel Baker in St. Charles in August 2014 through their lives as newly-

weds.

The episode revolves around Wahlberg planning a McCarthy family reunion at the Hotel Baker. McCarthy, who was raised in the Chicago area, tells Wahlberg about her desire to move back to the area. She had previously rented a house in Geneva.

“I want to come back,” McCarthy tells Wahlberg. “I miss it so much.”

It is revealed during the episode that Wahlberg made an offer on a house in St. Charles.

Later in the episode, McCarthy is heard saying, “He got the house.”

McCarthy’s publicist could

not be reached for comment on whether the couple actually bought the house.

Toward the end of the episode, McCarthy expressed her happiness about moving back to the area.

board opted to vote against participation in a the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School on the Aurora University campus. He said it would have been an ideal opportunity for the district to move forward in STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

Pavlak praised the district’s finance advisory committee, saying its members provided vital information.

She said the board passed on the STEM opportunity because it would have been limited to 50 students and “I want all of our children to have that, not just 50.”

Valente said there really is not a balancing act, and a good strategic plan can hold the administration accountable by “squeezing out every dollar.” He said the board needed to stop “reckless spending.” He referenced the Cenergistic deal, saying he voted for it, and “it was my mistake.”

Voorhees said the dis-

trict needs a road map. She said officials must maximize its opportunities to access available grants.

She said it was important to keep quality teachers in the district.

Witt said it is difficult to balance, and “I do think it’s a balancing act.” She defended the Cenergistic deal, saying there is a guarantee that if there is not savings, money would be returned to the district.

“There is no risk,” she said.

Witt said if the district had “zeroed out” its tax levy, it would have saved the owner of a $200,000 house about $60 a year, but the district could have lost many teachers.

Elliott said he didn’t understand why staffing levels are up if enrollment numbers are down.

“That doesn’t make sense to me,” he said.

Elliott also added he would not have voted against the STEM program.

SUGAR GROVE – Candidates for Kaneland’s school board tackled issues such as balancing spending on education and being careful with taxpayers’ money, as well as whether there is dysfunction on the board Thursday night at a forum at the Sugar Grove Public Library.

The event, presented by the Sugar Grove Chamber of Commerce, featured introductions by candidates running for positions throughout the village, including elections that are uncontested.

Candidates for the Kaneland and Waubonsee Community College board faced a question-and-answer session after the introduction period.

The event featured all eight candidates vying for the four available positions on the Kaneland board – incumbents Peter Lopatin, Gale Pavlak, Tony Valente

attacks were not. The discussion on how to balance spending on education vs. being good stewards of the taxpayers’ funds provided a wider range of answers.

Kerry said it was not an easy question because “everyone wants the best for their children, but that doesn’t come with an unlimited budget.”

He said it’s important for board members to scrutinize where the money is spent. For instance, he said he wouldn’t have supported an agreement with an energy conservation company called Cenergistic.

Lopatin said it was a crucial issue, adding “this is what the board spends all of its time on, truly.” He said the district has made some significant cuts in the past and “we are still feeling the effects of those cuts.” He said board members do ask difficult questions of administrators and “that’s our responsibility.”

At the beginning, when, over Christmas, a self-exam found a tiny lump Tia believed to be an infection or cyst?

“There’s no family history of breast cancer,” she told Dr. Perry Menini, our medical oncologist. “I also breastfed both children, which mothers believed would help prevent breast cancer.”

Dr. Menini, a bearded, soft-spoken Ben Affleck, nodded. “About five percent of women who get breast cancer have a genetic predisposition to it.”

When Tia discovered the lump, it didn’t feel like the BB-hard “tumor” in a health center’s manikin touched 40 years ago on a high school field trip. Regardless, in January, she made an appoint-

“It is good you found it early,” said Dr. Mary Ahn, Tia’s surgeon, stressing that the earlier a screening mammogram detects a tumor, the smaller and easier it is to deal with.

“If you write about this,” Tia urged me, “encourage both men and women, if finding an abnormal lump anywhere, to have it checked out.”

Or do you start with a sort of ending, two months later? After mammograms, ultrasounds and MRI; after a radioactive bone scan and CT scan; and after countless

appointments with Delnor Hospital’s oncology team of nurses, social worker, imaging specialist, surgeon, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, et al.

Or start with the tumor biopsy, confirming malignancy, the news inducing a feeling like drowning?

Or start after surgery removing the tumor and excising lymph nodes, confirming Stage 1-B cancer?

Or start a couple weeks later, when the Oncotype DX test, which assesses the aggressiveness of the breast cancer at the molecular level, revealed “low risk” cancer recurrence, meaning no chemotherapy would be needed, only radiation treatment followed by hormonal therapy?

“You don’t seem very excited,” Dr. Menini said, delivering the fantastic news.

“I am excited,” Tia said.

“I’m just in shock.” After thinking she’d never get breast cancer, then told she had it, she had learned to control her emotions.

“Does low risk mean,” Tia asked him, “tonight I get to celebrate with champagne?”

“I can already see the champagne in your eyes.”

Or start before the surgery, when Dr. Ahn first addressed our anxious tears: “You need to stay positive.

The spirit helps the body heal.”

Miraculously, tears gave way to smiles with all the empathy, guidance, prayers, cards, meals, flowers, phone calls, cancer survival stories, Graham’s chocolates, and warm, homemade blueberry blintzes that family, friends, neighbors, students, school administrators and fellow faculty delivered like so many angels.

Oh, how that solace and goodwill helped keep our spirits strong and healthy!

So, now that you’ve started, how to close? Perhaps with a suggestion: When facing cancer or other life-threatening disease, don’t hide it.

Share your news. Allow fear and stress to be overwhelmed by the love and care of those you trust and believe in.

Or simply end with a grateful “thank you” to all who nurtured you, to all who kept you afloat.

Heavy trade in alarmism THE WASHINGTON POST President Barack Obama’s proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement is in trouble on Capitol Hill.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said a bill to enable expedited consideration of the pact will be delayed until April because of opposition from liberal Democrats and tea party Republicans.

The latest rallying cry for TPP foes is it would allegedly threaten environmental and labor regulations, as well as U.S. sovereignty, for the benefit, as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., noted recently in an oppage column, of “the biggest multinational corporations in the world.”

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

The supposed menace is the TPP’s Investor-State Dispute Settlement mechanism, similar to language in more than 3,000 agreements among 180 countries, including 50 agreements to which the United States is a party.

It would permit companies to challenge unfair or discriminatory treatment by TPP governments in binding arbitration rather than an ordinary court.

The useful purpose of the settlement provision is to encourage the free flow of capital by protecting foreign investors from uncompensated expropriation and other abuses in countries where they are, as outsiders, disfavored in court – or in countries that may lack well-developed court systems at all.

Contrary to predictions that these processes are stacked in favor of multinationals, the United Nations reports that governments won 37 percent of cases and business only 25 percent; 28 percent were settled before the arbitrators ruled.

Obama administration negotiators have sought to minimize the misuse of this settlement provision under the TPP by recognizing each country’s “inherent right” to regulate for health, safety and quality of life objectives. The vast majority of TPP countries are legally well-developed (Canada, Australia, New Zealand) or already free-trade partners with the United States (Mexico, Peru, Chile).

So the TPP changes the status quo hardly at all.

atie Claussner attacked the rim with increased confidence during her senior girls basketball season at St. Charles East, leaving defenders and spectators to do their own kinds of moving.

She still hadn’t decelerated 10 days after the Saints played their final game. Claussner even challenged inanimate objects such as gym names and daylight savings time.

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, basketball in hand, Claussner briefly transformed the LifeTime Fitness in Bloomingdale into an Anytime franchise.

“I have nothing else to do,” she said, “so I’m literally shooting all the time.”

That doggedness often had opponents grasping to contain Claussner, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She developed a quickness to the basket that, when coupled with a strong midrange game, steered the Saints toward their share of matchup advantages.

Told of the LifeTime Fitness story earlier this week, East coach Lori Drumtra chuckled and said she wasn’t surprised about her point guard.

Last season, Drumtra and assistants Sarah Seward and James Hawkins frequently found themselves hounding Claussner for the last outstanding piece of team equipment well after practice had ended.

The crafty Claussner, ranked fifth in her class and bound for a collegiate career at academic-intensive Washington University in St. Louis, an NCAA Division III school, quickly scrambled to a solution.

She brought her own ball and kept shooting.

“She had the year she had this year strictly because of the hard work that she put in,” Drumtra said. “You’ve got to kick her out of the gym. When she came in this year, she was ready to go.”

Claussner opened the season on a tear en route to averaging 16.9 points a game, to go along with 4.2 assists. She scored 18,

25, 18, 24 and 24 points as the team went 4-1 in the Schaumburg Thanksgiving tournament, unleashing separate elements of her game whenever the situation dictated it.

Valued as a long-range shooter and occasional changeof-pace ballhandler when she emerged in the middle of her sophomore year, Claussner, a left-hander, accelerated her driving and midrange focus after former Saints standout Amanda Hilton graduated last spring.

She shot 44.8 percent from the field, including 47.8 from inside the arc.

Admittedly lukewarm to training runs, Claussner built stamina by dribbling around her family’s driveway and embracing East’s weight training regimen.

She worked closely with Hawkins, who Drumtra called the Saints’ “point guard mentor” in light of his prep career at the position, while also lowering her jump shot release. The latter element needed tweaking, Claussner found, after she had overcompenstated last season to avoid excessive contact.

Whatever her decision – drive, pass, pull up – the constant was the sight of the ball in Claussner’s hands.

“No one expects people to be left-handed, so when you come

out there, it’s totally different,” Claussner said. “They have to guard you a different way. A lot of people would say, ‘Make her go right, make her go right.’ In reality, a lot of people couldn’t stop me going left, so my mindset was why fix something if it isn’t broken. I didn’t really isolate with my left hand, either. I even wanted to prove more this year that I could go right and tried to do that.”

Drumtra recalls an emotional Claussner after an 18-point defeat at St. Charles North in mid-January. North had limited Claussner to nine points, and things weren’t going much better for the team, which lost its fourth of five consecutive games.

With opponents now game-planning for Claussner, she felt the effects of extra attention. Much of the strategy hinged on trapping Claussner to her left.

Hawkins, the point guard guru who sported bowties during the Saints’ run to the 4A Geneva Sectional final, suggested Claussner not get herself tangled up and remember her other hand.

“That’s what real athletes do; they adjust,” Drumtra said.

“They have to adjust. Because if you’re really good, other teams, no matter what the sport, they’re going to try to key on you and take away what

you do best. And good players will figure out another way to do it the best.”

Claussner, effective at 5-foot-5, erupted after that to impressively close an Upstate Eight Conference River Division Player of the Year season.

A week after the North loss, she matched a career-high with 30 points as the Saints handed conference champion Geneva its lone league defeat.

Earlier that week, Claussner had scored 30 in a home loss to Conant, the eventual top sectional seed the Saints rebounded to beat last month.

Geneva ultimately recovered, too, clamping down on Claussner and the Saints inside the arc to earn a comfortable win in the sectional championship game.

A few days later, East softball coach Kelly Horan again made playful overtures to Claussner’s potential interest in returning to the diamond.

Claussner played softball as a freshman, but had since decided to stick with hoops.

If only LifeTime Fitness offered a batting cage.

“I didn’t have to pick, but I wanted to pick basketball because it was my favorite thing in the universe,” Claussner said. “I wanted to stick to that so I could play at the next level.

“I never made a better decision.”

Meadows keeps Vikings connected on, off court

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com Most Geneva girls basketball players routinely visit with coach Sarah Meadows after the season ends.

Sometimes, their school schedules require it. Others, the Vikings simply stop by Meadows’ spot in the physical education office to say hello.

“If I don’t see one of them for awhile, I’ll make a point to check on them and see what’s going on,” Meadows said.

Those occurrences are few and far between. If nothing else, the Vikings have learned diligence from Meadows, the Kane County Chronicle Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

Actually, there’s plenty else.

Geneva boasts a 92-31 record in Meadows’ four seasons, including a 23-7 mark in 2014-15 that culminated with a berth in the Class 4A Conant Supersectional.

Eventual state runner-up New Trier stopped the Vikings’ bid for a second consecutive

trip to the state final four, but Meadows, as always, remained up front with players about how much she valued their effort.

“Our team came such a long way when you think about it, from Thanksgiving to our Christmas tournament,” she said. “I just think we grew and we matured and we started Sarah playing much Meadows better once we got all the pieces together.”

Geneva coped with another recent custom this season: Injuries.

Frontcourt stalwarts Janie McCloughan and Grace Loberg battled through injuries that kept them away from a lineup that included freshman starters Stephanie Hart and Margaret Whitley at guard.

A four-game losing streak spanning late December and early January tested the team’s depth and mettle. It also provided a great teaching tool for

Meadows and assistant Lindsey Huettemann, a former Viking who has been along for every step of the Meadows era since coming over from Kaneland.

“We learned we might not be able to to do the same thing every single night, and that’s OK,” Meadows said. “You don’t have to. You have to do what’s important for you to win the game. And sometimes that is the same thing. But it’s making those adjustments to help you be successful, and finding out what those adjustments are.”

Meadows lauded the leadership of McCloughan, a Southern Indiana recruit, and classmate Abby Novak, a senior wing who has started scheduling visits to a handful of schools.

Although their coach remained vocal, McCloughan and Novak never shied from taking the reins in the huddle or during a workout. Their ability to channel the silent virtues of leading showed, too.

McCloughan bemoaned her effort in last month’s Geneva Sectional semifinal against

Bartlett as “probably my worst game since I was a sophomore.”

With that, she resolved to augment her physical training by harnessing her mental game, a measure that included reading a new book, “Mind Gym: An Athlete’s Guide to Inner Excellence,” by Gary Mack, with David Casstevens. She spotted the book lying around while at a teammate’s house for a team dinner.

McCloughan embraced the various exercises the book offered and credited them for helping her to 18 points and nine rebounds in a sectional final runaway against St. Charles East, which had handed the conference-champion Vikings

their lone loss in the Upstate Eight River.

“If I hadn’t done that … I don’t think I would have played like I did [against East],” McCloughan said.

Learning its lesson from the teams’ previous meeting, when KCC Player of the Year Katie Claussner tormented the Vikings on drives to the basket, Geneva defended voraciously inside the arc.

Geneva rolled, 64-39, a result that didn’t surprise Meadows.

At this rate, little does.

“We have good kids, and they know what’s expected of them and they follow through and do a nice job with it,” she said.

St. Charles Rowing Club eager to spread word Rowing interest, unlike the Fox River, never should require thawing, in Chris Meldrum’s mind.

To that end, Saturday’s St. Charles Rowing Club indoor event at the Fox Valley Ice Arena fitness center offers the best of both worlds, if not rippling waters. Meldrum, the SCRC president, will help host a 2,000-meter competition at Fox Valley designed for rowers of all abilities. An entry fee of $25 allows athletes to participate in multiple races on the partner facility’s various rowing machines.

“It’s a community event,” Meldrum said. “It’s people understanding. It’s awareness, letting people know we’re here, working out. We’ve got some nice new equipment, which is great, considering this program started in my basement. It’s exciting. It’s really cool.”

No question, the SCRC has grown considerably since it launched in December 2012.

These days, rowers from the Tri-Cities are joined by counterparts from Barrington, Hinsdale, Naperville and Wheaton to comprise the club of 30-plus high-schoolers.

“It’s been great,” Meldrum said. “It’s really exciting. The whole crew, they’re great kids; they really are.”

ENEVA – The last time the Geneva boys basketball team was a clear underdog, it was March 2014.

The Vikings pulled off upsets over Bolingbrook and West Aurora to advance to a Class 4A sectional championship game last season, but this year’s team hasn’t been a substantial underdog all season – until tonight. Geneva (28-3) takes on a 29-1 Rockford Auburn team for the IHSA Class 4A DeKalb Sectional championship.

“It reminds all of us who were on the team last year, feeling like an underdog again,” Geneva junior center Loudon Vollbrecht said. “It feels great because we don’t want the season to end yet.

We’re willing to do anything to take that team down.

“We know they’re chippy, we know they don’t really care about anything but … trying to win a basketball game, and we’re the same way. We’ll fight until the end.”

That will to win is where the similarities between the Vikings and Knights end.

Auburn is known for furious, full-court pressure and prolific scoring, and has succeeded in pushing the tempo to the tune of averaging more than 83 points a game, a whopping total for a high school team. Remarkably, Auburn navigates its breakneck pace despite using a core rotation of six guys and one or two others sparingly – at least until the score is out of hand, which happens frequently for this year’s Knights.

“Ball pressure is No. 1, and the fact that we expect to play pressure, full-court defense the entire game,” Auburn coach Bryan Ott said. “I think as the game goes on, that becomes a real grueling, physical test for the other team.

“And I guess the next thing that would go with that is you can’t run out the way you

The two-time NBA Championship/Renaissance man has a Fan Zone on the site, an area called “Pau’s World,’’ and of course his own blog.

His latest entry was called “A Good Reaction in Difficult Times.’’

“We’re fighting hard,’’ Gasol wrote.

“We’re growing in the face of adversity, and getting over the knocks. Maybe that helps explain why Gasol, and his 34-year-old knees, were willing to put in 43 minutes of work in the overtime win Wednesday in Philadelphia, and afterwards all but welcome the extra work.

“Gotta do whatever it takes, man,’’ Gasol said, meeting with reporters while his feet were entrenched in an ice bucket. “Sometimes consequences come along, and there’s nothing you can do about it. You’ve got to face the circumstances, and that’s what I’m facing right now.

Hopefully, it won’t affect me negatively down the road, and when we do have a full squad, I’m not going to need to do

so much probably. Just try and do what I can to help the team.’’

Could the Gasol signing have worked out any better for the Bulls?

Of the five regular starters, Gasol has missed the fewest games this season with just four. His 27 points and 16 rebounds against the 76ers was his career-best 44th double-double of the season, and more importantly, what would have been a rolling of the eyes earlier in the year – 43 minutes of work – is now a badge of honor for the big man.

“Yeah, yes they do, especially when you got done playing four [games] in five [nights] with the traveling,’’ Gasol said, when asked if the 43 minutes of playing time feels much different from his average of 34.7 minutes a game.

“The schedule is tough. It’s been really hard as of late for us, but we have to get through it the best way we can.

“You try [and get rest] but sometimes your legs aren’t there. Your mind tries but your legs … often your body doesn’t respond as it normally does when you’re fresher.

You keep on trying. Don’t give up. Try to make things happen for your team and hopefully it works.’’

That’s really what Gasol has transformed into this season: A flashy veteran at the start of training camp, now transformed into just another “dawg,’’ as Taj Gibson likes to say.

And with Gibson, Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and Joakim Noah all sidelined Wednesday, a “dawg’’ that was still willing to bite – for 43 minutes if need be.

Red Oak Nature Center to host MapleFest on March 21

Tours will run every hour beginning at 9 a.m., with a final tour at 1 p.m.

Tours will be led by naturalists from Red Oak, and they will lead visitors to various stations in the woods to view demonstrations of how sap is harvested and turned into maple syrup.

Each group will tap a maple tree, then witness the process of how sap is boiled and converted into syrup. Group taste-tests will follow.

“Early spring is the perfect time to collect maple sap because the days start getting warmer but the nights are still cold,” said Margaret Gazdacka, facility supervisor at Red Oak, in a news release. “Visitors will get to witness this age-old practice of taking sap from a tree and turning it into the syrup you use on your pancakes.”

Maple-themed treats and hot beverages will be available for a small fee (cash or check). Also, the event will feature items for sale from Vermont – the maple syrup-producing capital of the world – that include small bottles of maple syrup, lollipops and candy.

The event is free and open to the public; however, registration is requested for groups of 10 or more.

GENEVA – Wildwood in Geneva will host its annual Easter Sunday champagne brunch buffet on Sunday, April 5. Seatings begin at 10 a.m. and will continue through 3 p.m.

ADVICE Old world tradition clashes with new diet Dear Abby: I have been dating my boyfriend, Mike, for about two years, and things are going great.

During this time, I have become very close with his family. Both of his parents came to the United States from Europe, and with their culture comes his mother’s traditional cooking and the need to make sure everyone’s bellies are full.

I have always enjoyed her food; however, in the last six months I have become a vegetarian. Out of courtesy for her, I have been making sure to eat at home before spending time at Mike’s house. I can see that his mother feels a bit put off because I have been eating less of her food, but I feel it would be rude to ask her for a separate meal to accommodate my diet.

What should I do? – Nervous In New England Dear Nervous: Your boyfriend’s mother may be put off because she doesn’t understand why you seem to be enjoying her cooking less. If

They do travel a lot, have small children and demanding jobs, so it’s hard to know if the delays are real or if they aren’t interested in being friends any longer. ‘Ancient grains’ are nutritional powerhouses Dear Doctor K: I keep hearing about “ancient grains.” What are they? Are they healthier than other grains?

Dear Reader: The term “ancient grains” may be a bit of a misnomer. These grains and seeds are not necessarily older than “modern” grains such as oats and wheat. But they have remained closer to their original form over thousands of years of changing farming practices.

Over the past few years, ancient grains have become quite popular. These days, you can find a wide variety of ancient grains in grocery stores and online.

What sets ancient grains apart from modern grains? Modern wheat is heavily refined, or processed. The process of refining wheat involves removing both the outer and innermost layer of the plant seed. This eliminates some protein, almost all of the fiber and most of the vitamins and minerals from the final product.

In contrast, most ancient grains are eaten as whole grains.

Whole grains are nutritional powerhouses with many health benefits. Eating whole grains, for example, lowers the risk of heart

Here’s a closer look at ancient grains you may want to check out: • Amaranth contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. It’s also gluten-free and takes less than 20 minutes to cook.

• Teff is a versatile grain with a mild flavor. Teff provides more calcium than any other grain. It is gluten-free. It also helps to prevent spikes in blood sugar after meals.

• Freekeh comes from green wheat and has a nutty and smoky flavor. It is higher in protein and fiber than brown rice.

• Kamut is high in protein and fiber. It is richer in minerals than modern wheat. Kamut can be cooked like rice, or ground and substituted for wheat flour in baked goods.

• Sorghum is a gluten-free cereal grain high in antioxidants and other compounds important in heart health. Sorghum can be a substitute for wheat flour in most baked goods. Or it can be boiled

like rice.

• Millet is the general term for a group of small-seeded grains.

Millet is rich in antioxidants and magnesium, and is gluten-free.

• Quinoa is a complete protein, a rich source of potassium and is gluten-free. You can use it to replace your favorite grain-based side dishes.

The resurgent interest in ancient grains (or whole grains) has stimulated the food industry.

In addition, the rise of grocery stores that specialize in foods deemed “healthier” has made these grains more available. Also, more restaurants are featuring ancient grains.

Finally, there are a growing number of cookbooks and online recipes dedicated to ancient grains. That makes it easy to translate theory into practice: Ancient grains are healthy foods, and the recipes make delicious meals. If you’ve never cooked with ancient grains, I urge you to try them. My family eats them a lot.

Teen can’t afford ‘fat farm’ Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and grossly overweight.

I don’t have any gland problems, so it’s really my own fault. I love food, and I simply eat too much. I’ve tried several healthy, low-calorie diets, but after a while I lose my willpower and end up overeating again.

And, sometimes, I’ve ended up weighing more than I did before. I’ve finally reached the absolute bottom and have now gained 75 pounds over my recommended weight. I’m tired of not having a normal social life and tired of not being able to find decent clothes to fit me.

Our family doesn’t have a lot of money, so I can’t possibly go to a “fat farm” to lose weight, although I heard it is effective, but extremely costly. What can I do to lose weight and keep it off? – Emily, Providence, Rhode Island Dear Emily: Overeating is a very strong addiction and difficult to overcome. Smokers can stop smoking and alcoholics can stop drinking, but overeaters must continue to eat to survive. The first step to losing weight is to learn how to eat properly.

I suggest that you get in control of your eating habits with the help of Overeaters Anonymous. OA is a fellowship of people of all ages and from all walks of life who meet to solve this common problem – compulsive overeating. OA doesn’t have a diet plan – any approved healthy eating plan is acceptable. Instead, OA offers support in dealing with both the emotional and physical symptoms of compulsive overeating.

First, look only at the North hand.

What should North respond after partner opens one spade?

After you have decided, also look at the South hand. West leads the heart queen against six spades.

How should South plan the play?

The North hand is perfect for a four-club splinter bid. This shows at least four-card spade support and game-going values with a singleton (or void) in clubs.

Without this agreement, North should make the partnership’s game-forcing raise; two no-trump is popular today.

The splinter bid would surprise South, since he also has a singleton club, but he would probably recover sufficiently to use some form of Blackwood before settling into six spades.

After West leads the heart queen, South has two possible losers (one heart and one diamond) and only 11 guaranteed tricks (six spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club). Declarer must score a third diamond trick – how?

The right technique is to lead twice toward the hand with the two honors. So, South takes the first trick, draws trumps ending in the dummy, and plays a diamond to his king. After that wins, he returns to dummy with a trump and leads another low diamond.

When the ace pops up, declarer’s 12th trick has been established.

What if West could capture the diamond king with the ace? Then South would need diamonds 3-3 (or a very unlikely heart-diamond squeeze).
