North’s mock trial team wins state

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Hard work and dedication helped the St. Charles North Mock Trial Team make history over the weekend.

The team placed first in the 32nd annual Illinois State Bar Association High School Mock Trial Invitational for the first time in the school’s history. The competition was held Saturday and Sunday at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign.

The victory is a long time coming for the team, which placed at state in the top eight in 2011, then third in 2012 and second last year. Tony Maganini was one of six seniors who have been clamoring for the title since their freshman year.

“It was definitely an amazing experience to work hard over those years and train with our senior staff. ... it felt incredible, honestly,” Maganini said.

Each competing state team of up to 10 members tries both sides – plaintiff and defense – of a hypothetical case developed by the ISBA Committee.

This year’s case was Jersey Johnson v. Columbia Broadcasting System. Maganini said the team questioned its performance at first because the judge denied every objec-

When he and his teammates eventually were declared firstplace winners, they jumped out of their seats.

Preparation for this year’s competition season included working with attorney Patrick Crimmins of Brady & Jensen law firm. Crimmins takes the ideas the team has and helps form them into real, caseworthy arguments, Maganini said.

Another key part of the team’s preparations was holding two “Case Camps” on Saturdays earlier this year.

The students worked with the coaches for 12 hours, including breaks, to go through the case line by line.

The students did hem and haw a bit about the camps, but clearly they were happy with the result, said Robin Roberts, an assistant coach and St.

Charles North English teacher.

“We as a coaching staff are very proud of them,” Roberts said. The head coach is St. Charles North social studies teacher, Janelle VanDeSampel.

The team already is in preparation to represent Illinois in May at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Madison.

The myopic (nearsighted) eye actually has too much focusing power. Either because the cornea is too curved, the eye is too long, or the eye lens focuses excessively, the incoming light is brought to focus in front of the retina. To counter this focusing error, the optometrist will prescribe corrective lenses designed to have the opposite effect. These prescription lenses will offset the eye’s overly high focusing power, thereby allowing light to focus on the retina as it should. Thus, it makes sense that lens prescriptions written for myopic individuals should have a minus (-) sign in front of the lens power. This written indication means that the lens is effectively reducing the eye’s excessive focusing power. P.S. Debating county raises

Lauzen seeking increases, but some board members vow to vote against request By the numbers

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen says he has the votes to pass nearly $60,000 in raises for nine county directors.

The County Board was expected to discuss five of the compensation adjustments during its meeting Tuesday, but Lauzen postponed the item to April. This way, he said, the board can talk about those increases and the four that still need to go through the committee process in one discussion.

Two board members – Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, and Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove – said last week they intend to vote against the 5 percent salary bumps, and they did so Wednesday when two were brought to the Kane County Development Committee for consideration.

Taylor described the raises as “absolutely ludicrous” and said it is premature to consider them when union contracts are not finalized.

Lauzen – who ran on a fiscally conservative platform – maintains his effort to make Kane County’s director salaries more comparable to those offered by other nearby counties will not cost taxpayers “one penny more” due to savings in other areas.

St. Charles resident Roger Lehmann said in an email that he has contacted his County Board member about the topic.

If savings are “burning a hole” in the county’s pocket, he said, why not use it for something else?

“How about putting it aside for the next emergency such as winter road maintenance?”

Lehmann said. “Or even better, reducing my taxes.”

The theory behind the raises is to protect talent and reward achievement, Lauzen has said.

“In every business, we should never take for granted our talented employees,” the chairman said.

Christmas, and quality work was required to get a raise. The county should pay at least the average for superior performance, he said.

He noted the directors also went without raises in four recent years. Viewed that way, he said, it would be like getting a 1 percent raise each year, with this year being the fifth.

Lauzen has spoken about each director’s qualifications, experience and contributions when presenting the proposed raises. He also has compared Kane County’s salaries to those offered by other counties.

Wednesday, for example, he said Mark VanKerkhoff, the director of development and

community services, currently makes about $22,305 below the average of his counterparts.

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said he fully supports the raises. He and member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, said they view the increases as a “one-time correction.”

Lehmann, however, doesn’t buy that reasoning.

“Isn’t this a bit like keeping up with the [Joneses]?” Lehmann said. “Just because other counties pay more does not mean Kane County must pay the same rate.”

Board member Kurt Kojzarek, R-Gilberts, said he isn’t a big proponent of looking at av-

erages because that can inflate salaries, but he is a supporter of rewarding talent.

His workplace recently lost several employees to competitors, he said, so he understands the costs of replacing an employee can be greater than the raises.

Donahue said he would support a comprehensive wage and salary study for all county employees. He acknowledged the study wouldn’t be cheap, but said the benefit to the board as policymakers would be worth the time and effort.

Transportation staff Wednesday morning shared plans with the Kane County Transportation Committee to install yellow flashing left turn arrows as part of safety improvements between Fabyan Parkway and Silver Glen Road.

The 7.4-mile stretch of Randall Road runs through Geneva and St. Charles.

An Illinois Department of Transportation video about the traffic signal showed that motorists would have the right of way with a solid green arrow but would have to yield before turning left when flashing yellow.

A steady yellow arrow would retain its meaning that motorists should prepare to stop.

Peoria and Galesburg are other communities that have installed flashing yellow arrow signals.

County staff said studies have shown the flashing yellow arrow reduces crashes.

Some County Board members, however, believe it could lead to more.

Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, said a yellow light often prompts drivers to “punch it.”

Until all drivers are aware of the flashing arrow’s meaning, he said, he is afraid “serious accidents” will occur.

Becky Gillam, R-West Dundee, said she was confused when she encountered the signals elsewhere in the state.

“It’s a learning curve,” she said.

Committee Chairman Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, said he understood the signal’s meaning and noted the frustration of being stopped at a red turn arrow when there is no oncoming traffic. He said he is proud the county is on the “cutting edge.”

According to agenda documents, the safety improvements on Randall Road are estimated to cost about $1.7 million. Highway Safety Improvement Program funds will provide about $1.5 million, and the county’s match is estimated at about $171,000.

Construction on the improvements is expected to begin this summer, staff said.

BATAVIA – The Master Cast industrial building was so heavily damaged in a fire March 5 that fire officials said they are not able to determine what caused the fire.

“We know where it started and what was going on in the area, but we can’t scientifically determine the exact cause of the ignition point,” Batavia Deputy Fire Chief Randy Banker said.

Master Cast supplies permanent mold aluminum castings. Several agencies assisted Batavia firefighters in battling the fire, which occurred shortly before 10 p.m.

March 5. The building is at 106 Mallory Ave., at the southeast corner of Mallory Avenue and

First Street in Batavia.

It took firefighters about four hours to get the fire under control, Banker said. No one was in the building after 4:15 p.m. on the day of the fire, he said.

Earlier in the day, there was work going on with grinders in the area where the fire started, Banker said. Despite the heavy structural damage to the building, Banker said it isn’t in danger of collapsing.

“It’s a 100-year-old building that’s pretty sturdy,” he said.

The building will be demolished in the next few months, Batavia Building Commissioner Jeff Albertson told aldermen Tuesday in updating them about the situation.

“He is looking to relocate,” Albertson said. “He is looking to stay in town.”

BATAVIA – Batavia’s second annual restaurant week is underway and will run through Friday.

Batavia Restaurant Madness, an event aimed at promoting dining in Batavia, is presented by the city of Batavia, Batavia Chamber of Commerce and Batavia MainStreet.

“Creating and promoting Restaurant Week has been a collaborative effort involving the city of Batavia, Batavia MainStreet, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce and, of course, many of the city’s fabulous restaurateurs,” Chris Aiston, Batavia’s Economic Development Consultant, said in a news release. “It’s a great event to entice our residents and business community to break cabin fever and get out and take in our local fare.”

Batavia, was arrested Friday, Feb. 28, on a Kendall County warrant for a charge of violating an order of protection, and he was also charged with possession of marijuana. Police reportedly went to his address to serve an order of protection.

• A resident of the 7N700 block of Stevens Glen Road, St. Charles Township, reported that someone in New York opened a Verizon account using his information, including his Social Security number.

About $366 had been charged to that account.

• A resident of the 5N300 block of Paddock Lane, St. Charles, reported Friday, March 7, that she hadn’t filed her tax return, but the Internal Revenue Service had received one with her information.

• Snowmobiles reportedly rode onto the Glenwood School prop-

erty, 41W400 Silver Glen Road, St. Charles, overnight between Tuesday, March 4, and Wednesday, March 5. Nothing was damaged, but the vehicles were coming close to the residence cottages. The complainant told police he wanted to make a report in case someone gets hurt in the future.

STC police planning DUI enforcement for St. Patrick’s weekend KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com

ST. CHARLES – Police from today through Monday will be out in force conducting DUI and seat belt enforcement, according to a news release issued by the St. Charles Police Department.

St. Charles police will continue to support the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program.

Motorists who do not fasten their seat belts over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period run the risk of receiving a ticket, according to the release.

The objective of the program is to reduce the number of car crashes and the resulting injuries and fatalities through increased, highly visible enforcement. Police will focus on occupant restraint,

impaired driving, speeding and pedestrian safety, according to the release.

Seat-belt use is the most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The goals are to reduce the number of severe injury and fatal traffic crashes, to achieve a higher use of safety belts, child safety seats and booster seats and to achieve a lower incidence of impaired driving-related injuries and fatalities.

Research has shown that when lap and shoulder belts are used properly, the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.

ST. CHARLES – Six businesses were cited in February during the latest round of tobacco compliance checks, according to a news release issued by the St. Charles Police Department.

The compliance inspections took place Feb. 26, and 33 businesses were inspected, according to the release.

Those cited for unlawful sale of tobacco to a minor include BP Gas Station, 1745 E. Main St.; Jewel-Osco, 652 N. Kirk Road; La Vita Cigars, 2015 Dean St.; Lundeen’s Liquors, 1315 W. Main St.; St. Charles Citgo, 307 W. Main St.; and St. Charles MiniMart, 710 S. Third St., according to police.

The inspections were conducted using two 17-year-old confidential sources, one male

and one female. A total of 36 local businesses initially were scheduled for inspection, but one was closed for the season, and two had ceased operations, the release said.

The Feb. 26 inspection is the second of three inspections to be conducted during the 2013-14 tobacco grant period. The third-round inspection will be conducted before the end of May. A total of 66 inspections have been completed for this grant period to date, resulting in 10 unlawful sales of tobacco to a minor.

This means there is an 85 percent compliance rate for the grant period, compared to a 96 percent compliance rate for the same period last year, according to the release.

Each business cited Feb. 26 was issued a notice to appear in Kane County Branch Court on March 27, the release said.

GENEVA – This spring, the Shelter Insurance Foundation will award a $2,000 scholarship to a graduate of Geneva Community High School.

Shelter agent Mike Rinne sponsors and partially funds this scholarship. A committee of local high school officials and community leaders will select the local recipient. The committee will consider each applicant’s scholastic achievements, educational goals, citizenship, moral character and participation and leadership in school and community activities.

The scholarship is given without regard to race, disability, religion, national origin or gender

of applicants. The name of the recipient will be announced at the close of the school year.

The student may apply the scholarship funds toward tuition, fees, or campus housing for any course of study beginning the fall after the recipient’s high school graduation and leading to an academic degree at any accredited college or university. Potential for cheaper electricity

To the Editor: On Tuesday, the residents of unincorporated Kane County will have an opportunity to vote on the Kane County electric aggregation referendum.

This referendum, if passed, will allow the Kane County Board to potentially secure cheaper electricity for residential and small commercial users within unincorporated Kane County.

As a member of the Kane County Board, I appreciate the opportunity to serve you and look for ways to save you money. The referendum simply gives the county the right to solicit competitive bids. Once the bids are received, then the County Board will decide if it is in the best interest of the residents in unincorporated Kane County to move to the lower cost supplier. If not, all county unincorporated residents will

remain with ComEd for the next 12 months.

Also, there will be no change in your billing. ComEd will continue to send your monthly bill. It still will deliver the electricity, and you will still call ComEd for service and outages. You will not be required to participate in the new program. Every unincorporated resident who does not already have an alternate supplier will receive a letter with the opportunity to opt out of the new program at no cost.

If ComEd’s rate is less expensive than the lowest quoted electric supplier, ComEd will remain your electric supplier.

I believe this electric aggregation program will save you money. I hope you will get out and vote Tuesday.

Just plain sick of this winter’s weather I remember the days of my youth when the sun shone, flowers bloomed and pale skin sunburned. I didn’t know it back then, but those were the good days. Of course, I’m talking about last summer.

Just about now, I’m thinking that this winter is officially way too long.

Yes, it is awfully cliché of me to be writing about the weather. It seems like it is all everyone talks about lately. It always ends up as the headline of the news – Tom Skilling and the other meteorologists have gotten some great (negative) exposure this winter season.

This certainly is a winter unlike any other I ever have

experienced. My extended family, who lives in balmy Pennsylvania, calls us about every three days to check on how we’re dealing with the weather. I have formed a bond with my math teacher that is not based on an appreciation for calculus, but rather our mutual love of wearing Irish sweaters in the cold. My neighbors have even had their holiday lights up for about five months now, which continually gives me false hope that Christmas is here yet again.

The weather is also really cramping my style. I appreciate bundling up with layers for a while, but now I just want to burn all of my winter

I don’t know how they can do it – I’m still cold when I bundle up!

I haven’t always been one to spend all of my time outdoors, but I’m getting some serious cabin fever. The only moments that I really have spent outside were the countless times that I’ve shoveled snow. Although it really tones the arms, it is very difficult to find more places to pile it up. I can’t wait until I can casually stroll through nature without rushing to get between heated areas as fast as I can.

I also have come to appre-

ciate what makes the inside nice and cozy, such as fireplaces and electric blankets, as well as heating, in general.

If I’ve got to be inside all day, at least I’m staying warm (except for when I’m at school; they’ve been skimpy with the temperatures lately).

Snowmageddon. Polar vortex. Winter. I don’t care what you call it, I’m just plain sick of it!

Activity center shut down because of structural issues

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Village officials Wednesday temporarily closed the vill a g e - o w n e d N o r t h A u r ora Activity Center at 1 N. Lincolnway St., because of structural damage to the building’s roof.

According to a news release from the village, structural engineers have confirmed that the roof joists over the building’s west side show significant damage.

The unusually heavy snowfall this season has increased the load on the building, the release stated.

The building originally served as North Aurora Grade School from 1933 to 1968.

The Share and Care Learning Center is one of the main tenants in the building.

The village plans to have structural engineers provide a structural analysis of the

integrity of the entire building.

Officials said the building will remain closed until a recommendation on possible remediation is made, at which time, depending on the results, the village will assess whether the building should be reopened.

Share and Care owner Suzanne Starble said the village told school officials that the building would be closed today, Friday and possibly Monday.

“There is no conclusive decision about reopening the building,” she said. “They are trying to help us find another location.”

Share and Care serves 122 children a day.

The center is looking at a temporary location down the street from the North Aurora Activity Center in a building that is owned by Old Second Bank, but it first would have to be inspected and licensed, Starble said.

“We have this group of people, this very well-meaning group of volunteers – they have no tie to the university – who are using university resources and are not covered by university insurance,” Kaler said. “And they are not participating in any university teaching research or engagement program.”

The plots the volunteers were using, Kaler said, need to go back to research this year.

David Nelson, 82, of Geneva, another volunteer gardener, said they started out as master gardeners while gardening on the two 40-by60-foot plots, but then dis-

pensed with the program and gardened for charity.

“At some point, we decided we did not want to be in the Master Gardener program any more,” Nelson said.

The now-retired previous station manager offered the plots to them to grow crops for the poor, Nelson said.

And so they did.

“It’s never been an issue before,” Nelson said. “We may try to get a community garden site and work from there.”

Although Bill Fiedler’s son, Duncan, did not garden, he said he volunteered to help with the harvest, packing up bushels of produce to take to a pantry for distribution.

“We were taking it out by the truckloads,” Duncan Fiedler said. “Tomatoes the size of softballs, zucchinis

the size of baseball bats. I delivered my son there every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon [in summer] to water and weed and pick the vegetables at harvest time.”

Duncan Fiedler added, that in the 10 years his son was involved, they never received a single vegetable from that garden.

“It all went straight to the food pantry. Their mission was clear – to feed the hungry at the food pantry,” Duncan Fiedler said.

The university’s decision rankles him, even as the group is looking for a new home.

“A bunch of retired folks – my dad, who, at 85, is crawling around in the dirt out there – I think this is ridiculous,” Duncan Fiedler said.

“It seems wrong on so many levels.”

ST. CHARLES – For 13 years, a group of volunteer gardeners grew vegetables on two plots on the edge of the University of Illinois Horticultural Research Center at Peck Road and Route 38.

Bill Fiedler, 85, of St. Charles, estimated they brought 1,300 to 1,500 pounds of produce – tomatoes, peppers and squash – to a local pantry for distribution during a harvest season. But that run soon will end.

“My grandson, Max, was in kindergarten when he started to help us; now he’s 16 and a sophomore in high school,” Fiedler said. “I guess we have to find another place.”

Robin Kaler, associate chancellor for public affairs at the University of Illinois, explained that the previous research station manager re-

tired a couple of years ago.

A new one was hired a few months ago, and he did not know about the garden project.

When he asked his department leadership about it, he was told to shut it down, Kaler said.

“It is important to remember that this horticultural research center is a state-funded research center for the University of Illinois,” Kaler said. “The mission is to advance our research, teaching and engagement for the university.”

“It’s a very noble cause, but that is not what the university resources are not there for,” Kaler said of the garden project. “The ground is not there for a community garden.”

Spelling bees give students from the third through eighth grades an opportunity to put their education and intelligence on public display, Lawson said.

“It gets those kids who aren’t athletically inclined a chance for competition and recognition for their skills,” she said.

Lawson said she wouldn’t even take a chance to spell some of the words the students get during the spelling bees. The schools give students a list of words and various spelling bee websites to prepare. Some students also simply study a dictionary, she said.

Contestants vying for the D.C. finals usually are devoted and take the time on stage to think about the words they are given before they spell them out loud, Lawson said.

The audiences typically include parents, siblings and teachers who watch with baited breath as the students try to advance to the next round.

“It can be intense,” Lawson said of the spelling bee.

“It will be very interesting to watch.”

I’m hoping to do a lot more of these events around the Chicago area.

ES: So, what should people expect from the show?

RH: Eighty percent of the music is

going to be Irish music. The other 20 percent will be jazz and popular music. The dancers will perform before us.

The goal of the Brass Chamber Series is to take concert hall music and make it accessible and break down the barrier of the concert hall. That tends to be intimidating to people, because they feel they have to get dressed up.

By bringing it to Water Street Studios and collaborating across artistic disciplines, we’re hoping to draw a nice crowd.

I’ve always loved music, in general, but I fell in love with the sound of the trumpet and I fell in love with chamber music, classical musical and jazz, so I decided to pursue it as a career.

I feel extremely lucky to get to do what I do.

ES: As a musician on your own, you’ve played with such acts as Doc Severinsen and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. What do you learn from experiences like that?

RH: It’s something new every time. It’s kind of a lifelong learning process.

ES: What was the idea behind starting There’s always something to strive Northside Brass Co.? How long have you been for. There’s always another level to push playing the trumpet, and what drew you to yourself towards. the instrument in the first place?

I’m just inspired to keep working, RH: The name stems from the fact we because each of these players and these all have ties to DePaul University School of Music. I’ve been playing the trumpet for 20 years. I started when I was 10.

ES: What’s the chemistry like in the band, as opposed to different

planitkanenews@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Natural Resources Committee of Geneva, in conjunction with Western Avenue Elementary School’s Get Up and Grow Committee, is hosting the third annual Wine, Cheese and Trees fundraiser.

The fundraiser will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Persinger Recreation Center, 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva. Six wines will be served, and they will be paired with cheese and appetizers from local merchants.

There will be art displayed by The Art Box, live music, a “wine wall” and numerous silent auction items to bid on, including a sports package of four Bulls tickets, rounds of golf and restaurant certificates.

The Natural Resources Committee will put its proceeds toward a new initiative called

Greening Geneva – a reforestation program for city parkways. The reason for the initiative is that 2,800 ash trees in Geneva’s parkways will be removed over the next few years due to the Emerald Ash Borer, a news release states. The Natural Resources Committee has pledged to help rebuild the urban canopy of Geneva, and the fundraiser is a first step.

The garden was started in spring 2011 to enhance existing curriculum through hands-on learning, while reinforcing family and community connections. Today, it contains planting quadrants, a berry patch, a fruit orchard, a gourd tunnel and native prairie surrounded by accessible walkways that are anchored by a reading circle.

I don’t think any of us were expecting this record to do what it did. Certainly the charting on Billboard was a big surprise for us. This is all just like a bonus.

I look at myself probably differently than other people look at me. The thing that excites me about music isn’t so much the gig or the show, it’s the creative process.

I play music because it’s an outlet. The supergroup is comprised of singer and guitarist Richie Kotzen, known for his work with Poison and Mr. Big; bassist Billy Sheehan, who has worked with the likes of Steve Vai, David Lee Roth and Mr. Big; and drummer Mike Portnoy, co-founder of progressive metal band Dream Theater.

audition for Poison, they had told me what songs to learn. I went in there, and for whatever reason, I didn’t learn them very well, and I thought – uh oh – I lost the gig.

And so they asked me if I had any originals. So I played them “Stand” and “Until You Suffer Some (Fire and Ice).”

After I got the gig, they pretty much let me know it was because of the songs that I wrote – they really liked those songs. So, Bret Michaels and I sat down and reworked those songs and made them into Poison songs.

McNally’s breakfast pays homage to Emerald Isle

T

he time hovering around St. Patrick’s Day is when the Irish diaspora come together to honor their heritage. But, it has increasingly become a time for those of any ethnic background to celebrate all things Irish by means of drinking, eating, music-listening and all-around revelry. To engage in such behavior (any time of year), there is no better local place than McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub. With its food, brews, live music and ambience, McNally’s in downtown St. Charles pays homage to the Emerald Isle every day.

I’ve sampled many items from McNally’s lunch/dinner menu and have enjoyed everything I’ve ever tried. So, naturally, I was enthusiastic about its breakfast menu.

That’s right. McNally’s also serves breakfast. Only on the weekends – from 9 a.m. to noon. And, let me tell you, it’s well worth the week-long wait to wake up on a Saturday or Sunday morning for a hearty, Irish breakfast. It’s one of my favorite culinary exports of Ireland, and at McNally’s, they do it right.

To start, save the latte and cappuccino cravings for another day. McNally’s doesn’t serve fancy coffee drinks. If you’re after a creamy concoction to start your morning, have a Guinness. And don’t forget to add a little black currant for a tinge of sweetness. They also serve coffee ($2), Barry’s Breakfast Tea ($2), orange and grapefruit juice, Bloody Mary’s ($5), and Mimosas ($4).

Our waitress never let us see the bottom of our coffee mugs and was diligent about keeping up with our pre-meal coffee binge.

McNally’s uses Winston’s Irish sausage and bacon. The Chicago-based Winston’s Sausage opened in 1967 to cater to Chicago’s Irish and Irish-American populations.

Winston’s uses an Irish-family recipe for its sausages, and they are robust and savory.

My dining companion ordered The Full Monty, and – with the eating habits of children in mind – we ordered the Buttermilk Pancakes ($8) to share.

The mini-Monty or the Essential Irish Breakfast ($9) is the smaller version of a traditional Irish breakfast and comes with Irish sausage, bacon, a fried egg, Heinz beans and soda bread.

Because my dining companion opted for The Full Monty, I politely chose an alternative to my beloved Irish breakfast.

I ordered the McNally’s Breakfast Boxty ($9), a folded potato-crepe filled with scrambled eggs, mushrooms, spinach, bacon, onions and cheddar cheese. The boxty, a traditional Irish potato pancake, is used as a wrap similar to a tortilla. The crepe’s thin, crunchy outer layer – combined with its filling – gave the dish a symmetrical bal-

ance of tastes and textures.

After lightly smearing brown-sugar butter and a layer of warm maple syrup over the top of the pancakes we ordered, I began to indulge. The chef adds vanilla and butter to the pancake batter, which made the pancakes taste as if they were laced with sugar cookies. They are incredibly delicious!

Other dishes include the Irish Eggs Benedict ($10), an English Muffin topped with grilled tomato, Irish bacon, cheddar cheese, poached eggs with Orange Whiskey Hollandaise and seasoned breakfast potatoes; and the Corned Beef Hasherole ($9), which consists of crisp skillet potatoes tossed in a creamy mix of McNally’s slow-simmered corned beef with red onions, bell peppers and cheddar cheese baked in a bread crumb crust and topped with two eggs.

McNally’s also serves more traditional American fare, such as an American Breakfast Sandwich ($8), French Toast ($7) and Oatmeal ($3.50).

For years, McNally’s has been employing the “holy trinity” of success in the restaurant business – quality food, an inviting atmosphere and great service. The Irish pub plays an important role in the social scene of St. Charles and has firmly cemented its Irish roots in the suburban city.

jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – Chris Parrilli spent the first half of the fourth quarter pining for a chance to return the floor. He made it back, and the Geneva boys basketball team is awfully glad he did.

The senior guard buried a wide-open 12-footer with 3 seconds to play Wednesday, the difference in a 70-68 Geneva win over West Aurora in an IHSA Class 4A East Aurora Sectional semifinal.

“I love pressure,” said Parrilli, sporting a piece of gauze in his left nostril after an elbow to the nose knocked him out of the game early in the fourth quarter. “I think I handle it pretty well. It gets me fired up. I enjoy it.”

Senior point guard Cam Cook uncorked the decisive assist to Parrilli after West Aurora’s Tommy Koth tied the game at 68 on two free throws with 13 seconds to play.

“Cook got around his man, a great drive, and really just an unselfish play – he found me wide open,” Parrilli said. “Everything was on him. It was all him. I just knocked down the open shot.”

The win – Geneva’s first sectional victory since 1981, coach Phil Ralston said – goes down as one of the most dramatic triumphs in program history.

The sixth-seeded Vikings’ second straight postseason upset moves Geneva to Friday’s sectional final against top-seeded Benet, a game Ralston described as “gravy.”

There was plenty of meat and potatoes to Wednesday’s showdown, which was close throughout once Geneva rallied from an early 13-3 hole.

The second-seeded Blackhawks (24-5) moved ahead by six points with 3:16 to go in the fourth quarter but the Vikings’ late-game performance was airtight.

“Just unbelievable poise and execution by our kids down the stretch,” Ralston said.

Junior forward Nate Navigato stemmed West’s momentum with a basket at the three-minute mark to bring Geneva (25-5) within 62-58, and

Cook split a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to make it 68-66 before Koth tied it, if only for a few moments.

Parrilli needed medical attention after taking a blow across the chops less than 20 seconds into the fourth quarter. He returned with 4:40 to play.

“It was a definite elbow to the face,” Ralston said. “I still can’t fathom how that was let go. … I thought that was huge for us because here we have our second-leading scorer, the leader of our team, miss four, five minutes of the game because he had to be attended to, and that’s where they kind of opened the lead back up again right there.”

Ralston had pinpointed West forward Roland Griffin as a crucial X-factor in the

game, and that theory looked eerily prophetic as the 6-foot4 forward scored 10 points in less than two minutes to open the game, sinking his first four shots.

But after falling behind 133, Geneva swiftly dusted itself off with a 10-0 burst to tie the game, and the Vikings led, 3734 at halftime on the strength of 17 first-half points from Pace Temple and a trio of Navigato 3-pointers.

“In so many ways our kids are fearless,” Ralston said.

“So many tight games against good teams. There’s no one that scares them. Jontrell, as great of a player as he is, Pace Temple didn’t back down from him one inch. He really made him have to work really, really hard down the stretch. I think that was a key to the game.

“Obviously, poor coaching on my part to try and run some sort of gimmick and let Griffin hit open shots. We didn’t handle that very well. It was almost like we dared him, and

they called our bluff.”

Geneva – an efficient offensive team throughout the season – shot 63 percent from the floor on the night, to West coach Gordie Kerkman’s chagrin. The Vikings were 25 of 40 from the floor and 14 for 19 from the foul line.

“We didn’t help out enough on guys driving to the basket,” Kerkman said. “We should have taken some charges. We had a great opportunity to take a charge on Navigato [toward the end of the game], he was going full speed, and all our kid had to do was step in front of him, and we get a charge.”

Temple finished with 19 points, Parrilli had 11 and Cook had 10 for the Vikings, while Griffin (23) and Walker (19) paced West Aurora.

Parrilli couldn’t recall any previous game-winners in his career.

“Not that I can really remember,” Parrilli said. “That’s definitely the one that’s going to stick with me.”

The Ramblers – who won their supersectional over Eastland by 18 points – would appear to be favorites to win their first state championship, but coach Ron Ahrens wasn’t ready to embrace that tag.

“I don’t know if we are the favorites but I think we’ve put a lot of work into getting to the Final Four,” Ahrens said. “I hope we go down to the Final Four and we’re successful and we can play the game we can play.

If we play defense like we have been lately, I think we have a really good chance to win.”

Ahrens credited playing in the Geneva Summer

League and at DePaul’s team camp, along with facing Class 3A and 4A opponents during the regular season, for the school’s unprecedented postseason run.

Mystery opponent:

Mooseheart’s semifinal opponent, Mendon United, hails from western Illinois.

Ahrens said never having heard of the school before this postseason, and as of Wednesday’s practice, he knew hardly anything about the Mustangs beyond the basic information listed on the IHSA’s website.

Mendon United beat Waterloo Gibault, 67-49, in Tuesday’s Jacksonville Supersectional.

“Out of the four supersectionals, they weren’t even

[online] last night,” Ahrens said. “So we’re scrambling trying to find out anything we can on them just by looking at scores and pictures and stuff like that. That’s been the tough part.”

The Mustangs’ tallest player, 6-foot-5 senior Lane Davis, leads the team at 14.2 points a game.

Mooseheart guard Hameed Odunewu said the Ramblers’ distinct and high-powered roster is much easier to research.

“It stinks because I’m sure they know everything about us, but we have no idea who they are,” Odunewu said. “To be there, they’re definitely no slouch, they’re a good team if they’re here. The fact that we have no idea what makes them good … with [Eastland in the supersectional], we were able to scout them, but now with this team, we know nothing about them.”

Rambler nation: Ahrens said Mooseheart’s entire campus will trek to Peoria this weekend, and he probably wasn’t exaggerating much.

“We’re going to charter four buses down there Friday and Saturday,” Ahrens said. “We’ll get everyone here on campus to go, and then we have probably one of the greatest fan bases in high school basketball when you say you have a million [Moose members] that are fans of Mooseheart. You never know how many are going to show up, and especially in the state of Illinois.

We have a large Moose population in the state of Illinois, so we should have a good turnout for us.”

OOSEHEART – The Mooseheart boys basketball team has an international fan base, one that’s particularly strong in South Sudan.

Senior forward Makur Puou – one of three Red Ramblers starters from South Sudan – enjoyed a congratulatory phone conversation with his mother after Tuesday night’s supersectional win against Lanark Eastland that advanced the Ramblers to this weekend’s IHSA Class 1A state tournament.

Puou said Makur Puou he communicates regularly with his mother, father, three brothers and sister, who live in Rumbek, South Sudan.

“I talked to them [Tuesday] night,” Puou said. “My mom called me to make sure if we won or not, and I told her we’re doing very good.

She’s proud of me. All my family, my dad, too, they’re proud of me.”

Puou said Rumbek is in a relatively safe part of South Sudan, but he and teammates Akim Nyang and Mangisto Deng live with constant worries of how their loved ones are doing in the country, which has been decimated by civil war and ethnic killings.

Puou said talking with his family energizes him to make the most of his experience at Mooseheart.

“When I talked to them [Tuesday night], they all were there,” Puou said. “My mom woke them up. It was early this morning for them when I was going to bed.

Everyone woke up to hear my voice. They’re really proud of me. That motivated me more.”

Batavia grad on verge of high school title

Bandys High School in Catawba, N.C. needed a varsity and junior varsity coach entering this season, and Wolfe’s first instinct was petitioning to merely “be a helper.”

Bandys officials appreciated Wolfe’s platform, but still wanted to maximize the talents of the former Batavia athlete, born Tracy Olszewski. Enter a co-coaching arrangement with Kyle Moretz that’s an awful lot like parenting: separate voices envisioning the same goal.

Bandys (31-0) plays for the title at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday at North Carolina State in Raleigh.

Wolfe is excited about her parents’ plans to travel from Batavia for the game. Sue and James Olszewski won’t be the only family members in the stands, however. Jayden, now 15 months and set to become a big sister in August, has been a fixture among fans, often dressed in Spartans green and Vegas gold.

“She goes to all the games,” Wolfe said. “She’s our big cheerleader.”

Wolfe said the Spartans’ run prevented her from following Batavia’s landmark girls basketball season as closely as she would have liked.

A few months earlier – much as the Bulldogs and their 2013 slogan – she was “all in” for the football team’s run to the Class 6A state

championship.

A forward during her Batavia career, which ended in 2002, Wolfe played at Benedictine before suffering a torn ACL her senior year. The injury steered her to coaching; she was Elgin’s sophomore coach in 2007-08.

Wolfe, who teaches special education, spent her first year out of college as a permanent substitute at Batavia.

She relocated to North Carolina the next year and was a co-coach at South Iresdell High in Statesville.

Her career took a turn when she moved into public relations with Mooresville, N.C.-based Sheltra Motorsports, but Wolfe knew that detour would only be shortlived.

“I always kind of knew when I had kids I would go back to teaching, and basketball’s my first love,” she said.

“So everything kind of fell into place.”

LAKE FOREST – Tuesday night’s snowstorm didn’t rattle the Bears’ biggest signing of the 2014 free agency period – Lamarr Houston.

For his wife, on the other hand, it will take some getting used to.

“My wife’s from L.A. She’s never driven in the snow,” Houston joked with reporters when asked about his biggest concern in coming to Chicago.

Houston got his first taste of Chicago, and the local media at Halas Hall on Wednesday. A former Raider, Houston signed a five-year contract, and brings to the Bears what has been general manager Phil Emery’s word of the offseason – versatility.

“I believe that Coach [Mel] Tucker is going to put me in the best position to make plays, whether that’s inside or out,” Houston said, “and I think it’s going to be a great fit for me, being able to do things that makes the defense more versatile than having to make too many changes.”

Wherever Houston does line up, however, don’t try to label him.

“This game is not about labels,” he said. “I don’t want to be labeled as [only] a pass rusher [or] a run stopper, just an athlete who plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

Big hitter: Ryan Mundy had the pleasure of playing with Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark in Pittsburgh for four years, got his chance to start in New York last year and now will compete for the Bears’ open strong safety job.

“I feel like I’m coming in

here to compete for a starting opportunity, and that’s all I can ask for,” Mundy said. “I don’t shy away from competition. I look forward to getting started with workouts and practices and everything like that.”

Emery said Mundy is a player the Bears have evaluated for some time, using the adjectives of “tough, hard-nosed, physical, smart, instinctive” to describe Mundy, who considers himself a hard-hitting safety.

“I think I bring a physical nature to the defense. That’s been my M.O. for as long as I can remember, since I started playing football,” he said. “I’m not a guy who’s going to shy away from contact.”

Another new safety: The Bears signed former Packers safety M.D. Jennings to a one-year contract. Jennings started all 16 games as Green Bay’s free safety last season, but was ranked 67th by Pro Football Focus. Emery lauded Jennings’ versatility, range and coverage skills.

Bye-bye, Josh: Josh McCown signed a two-year deal with the Buccaneers to be their starting quarterback.

“We all want to congratulate Josh. He has been provided with a great opportunity to be a starter down there in Tampa. We’re very happy for him and very proud for you him,” Emery said. The Bears host the Buccaneers next season.

New numbers: Houston will wear No. 99, and Shea McClellin – now a linebacker – will switch to No. 50, which was James Anderson’s number. Mundy will wear No. 21, which was Major Wright’s number the past four seasons.

Bears’ Emery revels in NFL’s March madness

LAKE FOREST – Phil Emery never felt dizzy.

Maybe everyone else felt dizzy, what with 32 NFL teams vying for many hundreds of free agents all at once. But the Bears general manager felt right at home in the frenzy, like a veteran quarterback in the pocket as chaos erupted all around him.

“I was having the time of my life,” Emery said with a smile Wednesday at Halas Hall.

No, I’ve never felt this way before … Yes, I swear … It’s the tru-uuuth …

Ahem, sorry. Back to football.

The Bears organized a news conference to introduce two of their free-agent acquisitions, defensive end Lamarr Houston and safety Ryan Mundy. Shiny new jerseys awaited the players – No. 99 for Houston, No. 21 for Mundy – and both men flashed millionaires’ smiles as they held up their jerseys for the cameras.

It was a nice moment.

And then I checked my Twitter feed and saw that Josh McCown had signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, DeMarcus Ware had signed with the Denver Broncos, Darren Sproles had requested his release from the New Orleans Saints, Darrelle Revis had been cut by Tampa, and Owen Daniels was visiting Green Bay. Plus a bunch of other stuff.

So, you know, kind of a hohum afternoon.

Here, right smack in the middle of two wild days of NFL transactions, seemed like a good time to check in on Emery.

Because if he showed any signs of grumpiness or weariness or hesitation, that probably would bode poorly for the Bears.

Instead, Emery looked as giddy as an English teacher in a bookstore.

“How’s everybody doing?”

Emery asked as he stepped to the lectern. “Did you slog through the snow this morning? They do a great job around here cleaning the streets. We knew if we got you at 1:30, it’d be all cleared and ready to go.”

This was vintage Emery, friendly and upbeat. That’s good because significant work remains for Emery and his coaching staff as they look to repair the Bears’ woeful defense

Did we mention depth at tight end and on the offensive line?

Emery’s happy mood was not a product of denial or blissful ignorance. The longtime scout acknowledged the work that looms ahead both in free agency and the draft.

Sure, Emery dodged a few personnel questions, such as what the Bears might do with Charles Tillman or Henry Melton – “We’re working through that,” he said – but he also offered some valuable insight. Yes, he said, the Bears’ free-agent moves would help to shape which positions the team would target in the draft. He also said the crop of cornerbacks was much deeper in the draft than it was in free agency.

Emery could have spoken all day. But he had agents to call, players to scout.

“I would describe it as a wild process this weekend,” Emery said. “It’s a lot of fun. You can’t be timid during the ‘UFA’ process. There’s a lot of moving parts. You have to stay in it, you have to swing hard and be willing to reload and swing again. …

“You adjust as you go, you remain flexible, you have to. It’s just, it happens too fast, there’s too many people involved, you have to stay light on your feet and be willing to think differently and look at the equation differently and how it’s all going to work for you.”

Better clarity won’t arrive for weeks and months. That’s not a problem. Emery is having the time of his life.

Remembering Joe McGinniss, author of one of the best nonfiction books ever

Joe McGinniss, author of one of the best nonfiction books ever written, died March 10.

I wrote that accolade in my head nearly two years ago, on the day Joe first told me he had inoperable, metastatic cancer. I felt it had to be said, and that, for complicated reasons, no one else would say it in an obit.

All that was missing was the date of death.

I first met McGinniss in 1988, introduced by a mutual friend, when McGinniss was at the apex of his career, one of the most highly regarded writers of his generation.

As it turned out, from that point on, the arc of his career would be not so much a tailspin as a nose dive. His decline was partly of his own making – some unwise choices, both personal and professional – but I believe it all stemmed from a single event, the publication of a grievously unfair 1989 article in the New Yorker that called him a journalistic con man.

At issue was McGinniss’s conduct while reporting his masterwork, “Fatal Vision,” a book about Jeffrey MacDonald, the handsome young army doctor who murdered his wife and two daughters in a drug-fueled frenzy in 1970. During the doctor’s 1979 murder trial, McGinniss had been invited

by MacDonald and his lawyers to be a fly on the wall; in return for a piece of the book royalties, the writer was given unrestricted access to the defendant and his legal team. Just like the jury, McGinniss eventually became convinced of

MacDonald’s guilt, but did not tell MacDonald. To keep the murderer’s cooperation, which he desperately needed to flesh out his book, McGinniss feigned incredulity at the verdict and sympathy for an unjustly convicted man.

When it was published, the book took MacDonald by surprise. It said he was a killer, unequivocally. Its greatest strength was that it provided a riveting look inside the mind of a narcissistic sociopath, based largely on MacDonald’s own words, volunteered to the writer in hours of taped monologues from prison, when he presumed the author to be his friend and supporter.

After the book became a best-seller, MacDonald sued McGinniss for breach of contract, saying, in effect, that the writer had deceived him.

The jury was hung, but the trial transcript (including embarrassingly ingratiating letters from McGinniss to MacDonald) gave New Yorker writer Janet Malcolm a platform from which to skewer McGinniss – and, as it happens, to purge her own demons.

Her 1989 story – “The Journalist and the Murderer” – indicted not only McGinniss, but the sometimes manipulative craft of journalism for being ethically indefensible. Not surprisingly, her story had legs. Journalists love nothing more than discussing themselves.

This never really became a part of the narrative, but in writing this piece, Janet Malcolm was also wrestling with her own guilt. She had recently gone through a trial of her own, having been sued by celebrity psychoanalyst Jeffrey Masson for a piece she had written that had called him a narcissist. Masson claimed she made up quotes, and though Malcolm won the case, it hurt her reputation. She was never able to convincingly establish that she had not made up quotes. When she was writing about the alleged journalistic misdeeds of Joe McGinniss, she had a chip on her shoulder, a boil to be lanced. It leaked all over the page.

Joe McGinniss wrote many excellent books in the first half of his career – “The Selling of the President,” about the impact of PR on politics, was extraordinarily prescient, and “Going to Extremes,” about the weirdness of Alaska and Alaskans, is a forgotten gem.

The majority of McGinniss’s work after “Fatal Vision” was inferior. Much as I hate to agree with Sarah Palin about anything, his 2011 biography of her was thin and crappy and lazy, filled with poorly sourced innuendo.

But I am writing this because of “Fatal Vision,” which was as good and as rigorous a work of nonfic-

tion as there is. It belongs right here, in the same sentence as Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood,” which may be the greatest true-crime book ever written.

What was McGinniss supposed to have done when he realized, midway through the reporting, that the man he was writing about had lied to everyone? That he had killed his wife and older daughter in a rage – and then calmly, methodically hacked to death his sleeping 2-year old, stabbing her 33 times with a knife and ice pick, just to strengthen his alibi? Was McGinniss required to dutifully inform the murderer that he now believed him guilty, and invite him to withdraw his cooperation if he wished, possibly killing the book outright, but certainly killing it as a meaningful, enlightening, powerful examination of the mind of a monster?

There is an implicit covenant between a writer and a subject; in return for whatever agreement you might make for the telling of the story, the subject must tell you the truth. If he lies, all deals are off. It is impossible for a subject to be less truthful than Jeffrey MacDonald was with Joe McGinniss: he misrepresented the central fact of his story, his own guilt.

One of the main reasons that there is still doubt about Jeffrey MacDonald’s guilt – 44 years after the crime – is the degree to which “Fatal Vision” was unfairly pilloried by Janet Malcolm, and in a tsk-ing generation of journalistic self-righteousness that followed. It was a great book. It was a fair book. It is Joe McGinniss’s masterpiece.

Adopted son receives mixed welcoming Dear Abby: When I was in my early 20s, I had a baby boy I placed for adoption. I could barely take care of myself, let alone a newborn. The father wanted nothing to do with me or the baby, so I placed him with his relatives out of state, who adopted him. With counseling, I got my life back on track, finished college and got a good job. I am married now and have a family.

After 20 years, this child, “Fred,” called me. We talked every night for a few weeks and I invited him here to live with me.

BIG MISTAKE! Long story short, Fred is greedy, lazy and expects everyone to wait on him. He refuses to look for a job or go to school, and he expects me to pay all his expenses.

I called his adoptive family.

They said when things don’t go his way, Fred pouts and doesn’t communicate until he needs money. They feel exactly as I do – he should get a job or go to

The heart does more than pump blood Dear Doctor K: When a patient has one or more blocked coronary arteries, how does a doctor decide whether to perform an angioplasty or bypass surgery?

Dear Reader: Let me explain how your heart works before I answer your question. Your heart doesn’t just pump blood – it needs blood to survive. Every organ in your body needs a constant energy supply. And every organ is making waste material and needs a “garbage collector” to take the waste away. Both the energy supply and the waste removal come from the blood that constantly runs through every organ. The heart is the muscle that constantly pumps blood through every organ in your body.

Like any organ, the heart also needs energy and waste disposal.

The heart gets its blood supply from coronary arteries. These arteries can get clogged by cholesterol-filled plaques of atherosclerosis, causing a permanent obstruction.

Such a permanent obstruction can cause symptoms such as pain (the condition called angina), or a weaker heartbeat when the heart is forced to work harder than normal. The heart works harder during exercise and during times when people get angry or their blood pressure is high (for exam-

Medicines can help reduce the work of the heart. An aggressively healthy lifestyle, over many months, can shrink the size of the obstructing plaques. However, sometimes a permanent obstruction from a plaque needs to be eliminated promptly. The two main treatments are angioplasty plus stenting, or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

• Angioplasty plus stenting: A small balloon wrapped in a collapsed stent is inserted into a blood vessel in the groin or arm and maneuvered into the heart.

When the balloon is inflated, it flattens the cholesterol-filled plaque that was restricting blood flow. The balloon is deflated and removed. The stent remains behind to prop open the artery.

• CABG: During open-heart surgery, an artery or vein taken from elsewhere in the body is stitched in place to reroute blood around the blocked artery.

The choice between angioplasty and bypass depends on a number of factors. I spoke to my

colleague, interventional cardiologist Dr. Donald E. Cutlip, for more details.

When all three of the heart’s coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked, bypass is the better choice. (The doctor might make an exception if a patient is too frail to undergo surgery.) Also, for patients with diabetes, CABG is generally superior to angioplasty.

When fewer than three coronary arteries are affected, the choice depends on which arteries are involved. The left anterior descending artery (LAD) feeds blood to more of the heart muscle than the other two coronary arteries. When the LAD is narrowed or blocked, bypass surgery usually is best.

Boy takes advantage of girlfriend’s gentle nature Dr. Wallace: Matt and I have been going steady for about seven months.

We have also helped each other through a few not-so-good times.

We have exchanged countless photos and many meaningful gifts, and I still consider her to be my very best friend!

My problem is that my mother insists that I eat everything she puts on my plate. I try to eat nourishing foods and stay away from fatty and salty foods, but many times that’s what I’m required to eat. Let me give you an example.

Last night for dinner, my mother put on my plate a large fried pork chop, a large helping of mashed potatoes with milk and butter added and gravy, plus a helping of creamed corn. It took me almost half an hour to finish and I left the table so full that I could hardly walk away. I guess I’m lucky she doesn’t insist that I also eat dessert!

I’m 13, and I don’t think that it is healthy to always clean your plate, especially when you feel full. Do you agree? – Mindy, Jackson, Miss.

At the bridge table, though, it can be difficult to recognize bids and plays that will prove to be bad for you. In this deal, for example, defending against a contract of four spades, West leads the club ace: three, two, eight. What should he do next?

The auction was straightforward. North made a threespade game-invitational limit raise, showing 10-12 support points (high-card points plus shortage points, not that he had any of those here) and eight losers (one spade, one heart, three diamonds and three clubs). South had an easy raise to game.

One of the most irresistible temptations for a defender is to cash a winner. Here, less-experienced players would take the club king at trick two, then look around for inspiration.

But declarer would be in clover, losing only two clubs and one heart.

Instead, West should trust his partner’s trick-one signal.

East dropped the two, his lowest card being discouraging (if you and your partner use upside-down signals, East should play the nine at trick one). This denies the queen (unless he has exactly queen-two-doubleton, which is very unlikely).

So, West should shift at trick two, hoping his partner can get on lead early enough to push a club through South.

Here, any lead other than a spade at trick two defeats the contract, assuming East leads a club when he gets in with his heart ace.

When bulbs should be planted depends on the type of plant, according to the experts at Longfield Gardens in Lakewood, N.J. There are two main categories, bulbs and perennials. The last group will naturalize in the garden and grow back every year. This group can be planted as early as the frost has passed. This would be March for the mid to southern states and April-May for the north.

Most lilies would be considered perennial, but typically peonies, daylilies, hostas and astilbe fall into this group.

After 15 years in his Rockville, Md., home, Lazebnikov said the bathrooms were outdated and needed something, well, a little splashy.

Now showering in the upstairs bathroom is a digital spa experience. “It’s really like in a car wash,” he said.

Technology has become commonplace in many American homes – particularly in the rooms where families consume their media, with devices that allow them to program their music and TV from their smartphones, and in the kitchen, with refrigerators that tell them when they’re low on milk.

But now it’s starting to catch on in the bathroom.

The steam function can be controlled with user settings for different family members – a gadget that costs $2,500 to $5,000 and an extra $1,000 to $3,000 with the speakers, lights and aromatherapy. It can be as basic or intense, hot or warm, short or long, as each person desires.

“If you’re in the kitchen cooking, you can hit your iPad app to turn on the steam so that it starts generating, which takes about five minutes,” said Brittany Pomeroy of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Rockville, Md. “Then you can walk straight into the shower.

“Today, showers are so advanced they become the price of an expensive German car,” said David Goldberg, owner of Union Hardware in Bethesda, Md. Lazebnikov could have added a dryer but “thought it’s really too much,” he said.

He installed six copper pipes in the attic above the bathroom to support all the technology.

“There are no mechanical knobs; it’s all digital.”

The Japanese-manufactured Numi toilet, which retails for about $6,600, is digitally controlled by a hand-held panel the size and shape of a BlackBerry and attaches magnetically to the wall. It offers multiple options: • A blue floor light “man sensor” to raise and lower the seat by foot.

• Varying water flush strength and patterns.

• Lighted bowl that acts as a

night light.

• Automatic flush and lid rise.

• A bidet with multiple controls for water temperature, direction and pressure.

• Music: “It comes preprogrammed with ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘Yankee Doodle’ because that’s what the Japanese think Americans want to listen to,” said Goldberg, laughing, “and of course, it can be reprogrammed with Bach or Jay Z.” • A heated seat.

“Before I bought this, I wondered how I’d use it, but now I find it’s really convenient,” Lazebnikov said. “Especially at night when you’re half asleep, you don’t have to switch on the light.”

In the first-floor powder room, he installed a toilet bowl onto an orange, rust and gold wall of Jerusalem stone and onyx. “It’s a very small space, and every inch counts,” he said.

Wall-mounted toilets with dual flush buttons in the wall, which cost $700 to $1,200, are increasingly popular, said Ernesto Santalla, architect and designer with Studio Santalla in Washington. “They don’t take up much space; they operate well; and all of a sudden

the toilet becomes an attractive fixture,” he said.

TVs are also being added to bathrooms. Robern makes medicine cabinets with television screens embedded flush in the mirror. The devices cost $3,900, plus $260 for speakers.

“They’re great for getting ready in the morning,” Pomeroy said. “You can watch the traffic while shaving or putting on makeup, and your kids can watch cartoons.”

“We can put in any size TV and can place it anywhere on the mirror as long as it’s three to four inches off the edge,” he said.

Bathtubs are no longer standard. Houzz says nearly half the people remodeling bathrooms are leaving tubs out,

and those who include them often add spalike features that can be digitally regulated and programmed.

Touchless faucets, which cost $300 to $700, are moving from commercial outlets and highway rest stops to home bathrooms. “Embedded with sensor technology, they use less energy and conserve water, which is important because it’s one of the resources we’re depleting,” Santalla said.

As the capabilities of sensors become more adaptable, smart devices are moving throughout the home – and people are grabbing them.

“In the bathroom, high-tech products make you feel better, and who wouldn’t want that?”

Lazebnikov said.
