Egger was one of two Aurora Central students killed in a car crash Tuesday night at Route 38 and Dement Road in Rochelle. Egger, 16, of Montgomery and Allison Bradford, 16, of Aurora were passengers in a white 2005 Acura SUV. Egger died from blunt force trauma to the head, and Bradford died from blunt force trauma to the head, neck and chest, according to the Ogle County Coroner’s Office.

“He was always friendly,” North Aurora resident Suzanne Timm, a teacher at St. Paul Lutheran School in Aurora, said of Egger, who attended the school before enrolling at Aurora Central. “He knew everybody, and he always had a smile on his face. He had a smile for everyone.”

According to the Illinois State Police, the crash happened at 5:57 p.m. during “heavy fog conditions.” The six ACC students were traveling to a sectional basketball game, which featured the ACC Chargers against Marengo in Rochelle.

Two other 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds also were in the SUV, according to a report from the Illinois State Police.

Timm said she taught Egger from sixth through eighth grades. After he graduated from St. Paul, Egger would come back to visit, Timm said.

The Aurora Central Catholic community is mourning the death of two students who were involved in a car crash Tuesday night at Route 38 and Dement Road in Rochelle.

“He was just one of those kids that everybody knew and loved,” Timm said. “He was a friend to everyone.”

A GoFundMe page, www. gofundme.com/oidzb0, has been established, titled “Funeral expenses for Seth Egger.” It was launched by his aunt, Raquel Gonzalez-Thomas. More than $19,000 had been raised for the fund as of Wednesday evening.

A GoFundMe page also has been established for Bradford – www.gofundme.com/oj32p0?fb_action_ ids=10205413105239385&fb_action_types=og.shares. More than $6,700 had been raised as of Wednesday evening.

A news release posted on ACC’s website indicated the school’s community “gathered [Wednesday morning] for a special Mass to pray for the students involved in the accident, their families and the school community.”

According to the state police report, the Acura was

traveling west on Route 38 and failed to stop at a red light. The vehicle struck a semitrailer truck that had been attempting a left turn onto eastbound Route 38.

Bradford was not wearing a seatbelt, according to Illinois State Police. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The Acura’s 17-year-old driver was issued a citation for disobeying a traffic control device, police said. He was taken to a hospital in Rochelle and then transferred to St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford with unknown injuries, according to police. The other three teenagers in the vehicle signed waivers and were released from the scene, police said.

Police said Aurora Central Catholic officials were at the scene to assist. The school stated in its release that the Rev. William Etheredge, the school’s principal, arrived on the scene a few minutes after the incident and made contact

with the families.

The release stated that the hospitalized student was resting at the Rockford hospital Tuesday evening and was in stable condition Wednesday.

“This school community is grieving as a result of this terrible accident and the death of two students,” the release stated. “Father Etheredge invites the local community to join us in prayer for the students and their families who died in this accident. He also invites the community to pray for the injured student and the entire school community. Priests, the guidance department and grief counselors are assisting the students.”

The game was played as scheduled, and ACC players and coaches did not appear to be aware of the news immediately after the team’s season-ending loss.

Geneva man in murder case to police: ‘I didn’t do it’ Kathleen King’s father testifies, accuses Shadwick King of killing his daughter

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – When Geneva police detectives on July 8 began to suggest Shadwick King killed his wife, he responded with four words – “I didn’t do it.”

Shadwick King repeated the phrase several times to the detectives as they questioned him for the second time in three days.

Prosecutors Shadwick King on Wednesday played a video recording of the questioning during Shadwick King’s jury trial, which began March 2.

On the evening of July 8, Shadwick King was booked into the Kane County Jail, according to jail records. By the end of that week he was

charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen King.

In the video, Geneva Detective Robert Pech tells Shadwick King his wife had injuries on her body not consistent with falling down and dying. A train operator at about 6:39 a.m. July 6 spotted Kathleen King’s body partially laying on railroad tracks about a half-mile from the Kings’ home on Geneva’s east side.

When Pech began to explain a theory that Shadwick King killed his wife because he was upset with her for texting a man she met during military training in the spring of 2014, the phrase “I didn’t do it” is repeated by Shadwick King.

At one point in a separate July 6 video, Pech has Shadwick King stand up to demonstrate a defensive maneuver Kathleen King learned during military training and demonstrated on her father, Kurt Kuester, on July 5. The maneuver involves crossing one’s arms, grabbing someone’s collar, and then twisting and pulling on the collar in an attempt to render that person unconscious.

Baby product store marks 10 years

The store, which sells products for babies and young children, is at 205 W. State St., Geneva.

Owner Kristina Garcia said the store was at Dodson Place for five years before moving to State Street.

“We were more of a furniture store before; parents could do the baby’s whole room,” Garcia said. “We had to change our product mix.”

She said younger customers check out prices and products online, and Cradles and All had to meet that challenge.

“We have seen it change,” Garcia said. “The Internet was not the focus 10 years ago, but this generation now, all these kids know is technology. They won’t ever feel the

“The same crib goes into a toddler bed, to a day bed and then to a full-sized bed,” Garcia said. “You buy it once and have it until they leave the nest.”

Garcia said she opened the store when her first child was 3.

The second child was born a month later.

“I wanted my own store, and I was not getting any younger,” said Garcia, 40.

She has five children – ages 13, 10, 7 and 6-year-old twins.

Each has slept in a crib at the store.

“People would come in and say, ‘Oh my God, there’s babies sleeping in the cribs,’ ” Garcia said, laughing. “Being the mom of five kids, I can tell you a lot of what works and what doesn’t, from personal experience and trial and error.”

Police to increase drunken driving, seat belt enforcement

Aldermen eye changes in city’s liquor code

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles police will step up enforcement targeting drunken drivers and seat belt violators beginning Friday, according to a police department news release.

The extra enforcement will run through March 22.

It is being conducted in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, which is named “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

The objective of the pro-

gram is to reduce the incidence of motor vehicle crashes and the resulting injuries and fatalities through increased, highly visible enforcement of occupant restraint, impaired driving, speed and pedestrian safety.

According to the release, research has shown when lap and shoulder belts are used properly, the risk of fatal injury to front-seat occupants is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.

Batavia aldermen are looking at changing the city’s liquor code to allow salons and some other businesses to sell alcohol. Aldermen discussed the issue during Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

The city currently allows only restaurants to have a bring-your-own-bottle license. Aldermen are considering creating a new license for businesses and nonprofit groups.

“Some of the types of events for which some interest has been expressed include painting classes at Water Street Studios, musical performances at Kiss The Sky [record store] and jewelry-making classes sponsored by Waubonsee Community College,” city attorney Kevin Drendel wrote in an email to city officials.

In addition, aldermen are looking at creating a salon license that would allow salons, hairdressers, beauticians, manicurists, pedicurists and barbershops to sell alcohol.

A separate license would be created for other types of businesses.

Drendel stressed in the case of a business, such as a

salon or manicurist, alcohol could be sold only in conjunction with the sale of services.

Other businesses would need to sell alcohol at a separate counter.

State law prohibits alcohol from being giving away.

But Batavia Police Chief Gary Schira told aldermen he knows that is happening now, which is why he is endorsing the proposed rules.

“We would much rather regulate it than try to find it out,” he said.

Second Ward Alderman Marty Callahan agreed.

“If you can’t completely stop it, it would be good to regulate it as much as you can,” Callahan said.

GENEVA – For the fourth year in a row, the Association of School Business Officials International awarded Geneva School District 304 the Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in budget presentation, officials said at a school board meeting this week.

The Meritorious Budget Award program promotes and recognizes excellence in school budget presentation and enhances school business officials’ skills in developing, analyzing and presenting a school system budget, officials said.

“This speaks to excellence in financial management,” Superintendent Kent Mutchler said. “I want to

thank [Assistant Superintendent for Business Services] Donna Oberg. That is going above and beyond. It’s something very few school districts put in for because of all the extra work.”

Mutchler also praised the district’s business staff and Steve Miller of PMA Financial Network, the district’s financial consultant.

“This award represents a ‘Tradition of Excellence’ for our school system and reflects the district’s commitment to sound fiscal management practices,” Mutchler said.

The award is conferred on a district only after a rigorous review by professional auditors, and awardees must meet or exceed the program’s stringent standards, officials said.

Geneva District 304 gets budget presentation award

St. Charles prepares for St. Patrick’s Parade KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Motorists intending to travel through downtown St. Charles on Saturday could be delayed because of the St. Patrick’s Parade.

The St. Charles Police Department issued a news release Wednesday detailing the street closings and parking restrictions planned for the event, which is set for 2 p.m.

Beginning at about 1:45 p.m., Main Street (Route 64) will be closed between Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue (Route 25).

Second Street (Route 31) will be closed at that time between State and Illinois streets.

Detours for Routes 64 and 31 will be posted and staffed by police and emergency personnel. The detours will use State, Seventh and Illinois streets, as well as Illinois and Fifth avenues.

Police are reminding motorists to follow the detour signs and to be alert for pedestrians and traffic control personnel.

Drivers wanting quick passage through the area should use alternate routes because long delays might be experienced, according to the release.

Parking will be prohibited on the parade and detour routes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday. Vehicles violating the restrictions will be towed.

Other streets will be closed beginning at 11 a.m. for parade staging: • Walnut Street from South Third to South Seventh streets.

• South Fourth Street from Main to Illinois streets.

Operations Staff Executive Don Biggs told the Administration Committee demolition could begin as early as late May to early June as long as the necessary permits are approved.

This would mean the Regional Office of Education would need to vacate the property by the end of May, Biggs said, describing it as a “tight timeline.”

Dal Santo said she has been looking at properties for the past three years, and the cost for leasing the North First Street space is lower than other sites.

The seven-year lease would start at $120,000 and would increase each year, she said. The total budget allocation is $130,000 to include other expenses, such as utilities and maintenance, she said.

The closing date for the sale of the Sixth Street property, at 210 S. Sixth St., is scheduled for October.

GENEVA – With the Sixth Street School demolition potentially a few months away, the Kane County Regional Office of Education is on a tight relocation timeline.

The agency does, however, know where it wants to move: to 28 N. First St. in Geneva, a property about a half-mile away.

It would occupy nearly 10,000 square feet in the first three floors of the South Tower, which is owned by Batavia Enterprises.

Regional Superintendent Patricia Dal Santo on Wednesday told County Board members it is important for the office to stay in the center of the county so it can remain central to the school districts it serves.

The move is prompted by the sale of the Sixth Street property to the Geneva Public Library District. Both parties approved the agreement in January, and the County

RED ZONE DEFENSE When the protective outer layer of the eye (“white of the eye”) becomes red and inflamed, the condition can become quite painful. About half of all cases of “scleritis,” the medical term for inflammation of the “sclera,” are believed to be caused by an underlying autoimmune disorder, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The most common type, “diffuse scleritis,” involves widespread redness and inflammation throughout the whole (or a portion of) the front portion of the sclera and is the most treatable. “Nodular scleritis” presents with nodules or bumps on the surface of the eye, which are tender to the touch. The much more severe “necrotizing scleritis” is characterized by extreme pain and tenderness and can destroy scleral tissues.

Loretta was born in Chicago, the youngest of four children to Andrew and Stella nee Polonczyk Kudlik. From an early age Loretta was inspired by her Catholic Education to live her life with a deeply rooted devotion to her Catholic Faith. She was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com Robins and red-winged blackbirds may be harbingers of spring, but there’s an early bird that’s even more welcome at this time of year: the early-bird season passes for Otter Cove Aquatic Park and Swanson Pool.

Nothing says “summer’s coming” like signing up for a pool pass. And by buying an early-bird admission pass, eager swimmers won’t have to go off the deep end to get the best deals of the season.

The discounted prices in the early-bird pass program are in effect until April 30 and prices remain unchanged from 2014, according to Steve Muenz, assistant superintendent of recreation for the St. Charles Park District.

If the early bird is said to get the worm, the early-bird pass buyer is able to get great savings without the hassle of waiting in long lines.

For frequent visitors, season passes are an economical way to ensure a summer of fun. At Otter Cove, for example, the daily admission rate for open swim times is $9, and an early bird season pass for Otter Cove is $95 for an individual membership, so in a little over nine visits, it pays for itself. Nine visits over the course of an entire summer?

That’s easy. There also are pricing packages for half-season passes; 10-visit passes; ages 55 and older; as well as neighbor rates for residents of adjacent towns. And, as always, children under 3 are admitted free.

Households with children also can take advantage of a new pricing package called the “Nanny Pass.” Designed to offer a discounted price to families with either live-in

or by-day child care – at $77 for Otter Cove and $49 for Swanson Pool – the “Nanny Pass” represents not only a financial savings to households with children, but also streamlines the season pass registration process. With either written or verbal confirmation of the nanny’s employment by a family, the “Nanny Pass” can be directly linked to a household’s season pass program at the time of registration. The nanny must be employed by a current 2015 season pass holder, and registration for a “Nanny Pass” must be done in person at the Pottawatomie Community Center.

But no matter how often one dives in, spending time at both park district aquatic facilities can be the best part of the summer. Credit-scoring companies agree to give consumers break BLOOMBERG NEWS Three of the most powerful forces in the U.S. economy have just agreed to be more careful.

They go by the names Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and they collect billions of bits of data about U.S. consumers.

The three companies dominate the market for credit reports, which generate the information used to compute a consumer’s credit score – the single number used by banks and other lenders to judge an applicant’s creditworthiness. Employers, insurers and landlords also rely on credit scores to judge an individual’s trustworthiness.

At the same time, complaints about inaccurate credit reports and unresponsive credit agencies are legion. One in five consumers have an error in at least one of their credit reports, the Federal Trade Commission found in 2013. Both consumers and regulators have had difficulty getting credit bureaus to change their practices, which often rely heavily on automation to gather information and overseas call centers to handle complaints.

So, it is something of a victory that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman got the three credit scorers to adopt two major changes that should improve consumers’ credit scores and, not incidentally, their lives.

The first concerns late medical-bill payments.

It’s common for hospital and doctor bills to get caught in an insurance company gauntlet, sometimes for more than a year and without the consumer’s knowledge.

So, the companies have agreed to postpone for six months the inclusion of any unpaid medical bills in a credit score. And once the payment is cleared up, the credit companies will erase any record of the late payment, rather than leave it on the credit report for the customary period of seven years.

The second change focuses on how the credit bureaus handle customer complaints: They have agreed to better train employees to respond to consumer complaints about mistakes.

It is slightly puzzling, to say the least, that an industry built on data wouldn’t act on its own to make its reports as accurate as possible. Be that as it may, Schneiderman deserves recognition for negotiating the agreement and making it apply nationwide, although the three-year implementation period seems overly generous.

If the U.S. is going to rely so heavily on credit agencies and the credit score their data generates, it’s in everyone’s interest that they get it right.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Becoming a ‘big sister’ Having been the youngest out of all my siblings, there isn’t a whole lot of complaining that I can do.

If you’re the oldest sibling, then I praise you. See, as a child, not only did I never have to take on nearly half of the responsibilities that my two older brothers did, but I also got treated like a princess just because I was so little and adorable. Every wrongdoing that I did – whether it was stealing my brother’s toy dinosaur or eating his last cookie – was simply OK because I ultimately could do no wrong. However, if my brothers did the same exact offense, they got fingers pointed at them in disappointment. Don’t look at me; I didn’t make the rules.

So, while being the baby of the family has its benefits, as I have matured into the almost-adult woman that I am today, I often wonder what it’s like to have a sister or brother who is a couple of years younger than I. In a way, I almost wish I could have a younger sibling now that I’ve grown up. I just want to be able to give a small child all of this great advice that

So, this past Monday, when I had the privilege to be a mentor and tutor for a kid at a local elementary school, I was ecstatic.

As I have mentioned before, I am vice president of my school’s Interact Club. The club is a volunteer group that does community service work locally. Thus, when the opportunity came up to become a mentor for a little elementary school student, I was more than ready to pick up a pen and sign my name up.

Once I arrived to the school Monday afternoon, I met the student I would help tutor in reading every other week until the end of the school year. What is great about this program is that not only will I be assisting the same child for the whole duration of the program, but I’ll also be a positive person for my student to talk to.

And while the program is

an hour long, on Monday, I truly wished that I had more time with my student. It was so cool to just read with my little buddy, talk about what I was teaching them and just discuss stories together. My student was so intelligent, had so much to share with me, and overall it was such a heartwarming experience.

All the kids in this program truly look up to the teenage mentors, so it’s an honor that I get to be part of something that is so beneficial to them.

Just by being with the kids, I can see just how important our presence is. All these kids simply want is someone to talk to and make them smile, and so I only hope that I can provide my student with just that. Now that I’ve had the chance to be a mentor and tutor a younger kid, I’m officially the “big sister” I’ve always wanted to be.

By KARA SILVA ksilva@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After 25 years as a journalist, investigative reporter Susan Goldsmith got laid off from her job in the newspaper industry. In order to continue utilizing her passion for investigative storytelling, the Portland resident turned to documentary filmmaking.

After a yearlong production process, Goldsmith submitted an 87-minute documentary called “The Syndrome” to the Geneva Film Festival. Those involved with the film hope to expose a “questionable science” being used in cases going through the criminal justice system.

“There’s a lot of stuff happening in our courts that is passing as science that’s not really scientific, [which is] contributing to wrongful conviction,” said Goldsmith, who is the researcher, co-editor and producer of the documentary.

“The Syndrome,” which has been described as “thought-provoking” and “riveting” by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michelle Roberts, looks at shaken baby syndrome. In the film, a team of doctors is followed as they defend and free those being prosecuted and convicted for cases involving shaken baby syndrome, which is commonly defined as abuse involving head trauma, that results from shaking a baby.

The documentary feature was one of 33 films selected to screen at the eighth annual Geneva Film Festival, running from Thursday, March 12, through Saturday, March 14, at Shodeen’s Dodson Place, 416 S. 2nd St., Geneva. Film screenings will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, March 13, and will run from 1 to 10 p.m.

100 submissions by filmmakers representing 22 countries.

“We try to keep the vision true. [The festival] is about the films and having high-quality films, and exposing the people who come see the films to independent cinema,” Rolf said.

New this year is a third viewing screen, which will allow every film to be shown twice. The festival will feature full-length documentaries and narrative features, documentary and narrative shorts, animated shorts and student films.

“This year’s festival is kind of a growth from previous festivals,” Rolf said, adding that last year’s attendance doubled from the previous year’s event. “We’re not the size of festivals around here – Scarecrow Fest, Swedish Days and even Festival of the Vine has been going on for years.

Those are kind of staples … and we’re

hoping to get to that level.”

The festival has attracted submissions from all over the world, such as India, Australia, Europe and St. Charles.

Representing Kane County is St. Charles Susan Goldsmith singer/songwriter Anthony Lipira, who teamed with suburban videographer Eric White to create “Train of BS,” a narrative short about a middle-aged musician struggling with life’s challenges. In the film, which centers around a song, Lipira plays the guitar, while “Bob” the mannequin stars as the main character.

“The song is really about just reacting to a bad day, and we’re making fun of some of the inconveniences of life and how to deal with it,” said Lipira, who wrote the song. “I hope people find humor in it, and hopefully people will enjoy the music, as well.

White whittled down eight hours of footage to nearly four minutes, in a process that took about 24 hours from start to finish, Lipira said.

Those who attend the Geneva Film Festival with student IDs can purchase an evening pass for $5 or an all-festival pass for $10, and they will receive a free festival T-shirt (while supplies last).

• Festival-goers will be able to rub elbows with filmmakers during a VIP “Taste of Geneva” party from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 13, at 25N Coworking, 25 N. Third St., Geneva. Attendees will hear filmmakers discuss the trials and tribulations of filmmaking and how to bring a film to the silver screen. Entrance to the roundtable costs $5 at the door.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Amy Binns-Calvey, co-creator of “Flanagan’s Wake” and one of its original cast members.

She plays the character Kathleen Mooney in the upcoming production.

Eric Schelkopf: Great talking to you. So, what should people expect from the show?

Amy Binns-Calvey: It’s an audience

interactive piece. We want the audience members to feel like they are actually going to a wake.

Schelkopf: What was the idea for the show in the first place?

Binns-Calvey: There was a performing space in Chicago called the Improv Institute. The shows at the Improv Institute were completely improvised.

There was a group of us who performed there, and we found ourselves doing Irish characters quite a bit. We decided to do a long form improv – where you pick one idea and make the whole show about one idea – based on a wake, an Irish wake.

We thought it would last one weekend. That was 21 years ago. It became a very popular late night show.

We ended up getting it published.

The show still contains quite a bit of improv, so it was a little bit of

a challenge to put a script together, because you want to leave big chunks of the script for interaction and improv.

That’s sort of the history of the show. And it’s been running somewhere ever since.

Schelkopf: Why do you think the show has been so popular?

Binns-Calvey: I think because it changes all the time. It reflects who is in the audience or – as we like to say – who is at the wake.

The audience gets to sort of tell us how the wake is going to go. Each wake is unique. It’s very vibrant.

The wake very much reflects the feeling of everybody that’s in the room.

grounds. And so a lot of us have traditions of our families telling us stories about wakes, either family wakes or wakes in Ireland or what they are supposed to be like.

So, it’s very much drawing on personal experience. As we did it over time, things just sort of jelled.

Schelkopf: What is your character like?

Binns-Calvey: I’m a kooky person.

My husband once said that was nice that I found a outlet for the way that I actually think.

And I’ve been to Ireland a couple of times. It’s a great place to get inspiration.

Schelkopf: Did those visits to Ireland kind of inspire you for this character?

Binns-Calvey: They definitely influenced me, yes. There’s such a Schelkopf: What was your inspiration unique feeling to Ireland. Vikings dominate stretch run Geneva weathers storm, races back to knock off Jefferson

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Rockford Jefferson boys basketball team was beginning to take charge of Wednesday’s sectional semifinal until Geneva took a pair of charges of its own.

Consecutive charges drawn enabled Geneva to weather offensive hiccups in the third quarter as the Vikings regrouped for a 63-54 win against the J-Hawks to advance to Friday’s IHSA Class 4A DeKalb Sectional final against powerhouse Rockford Auburn.

Geneva coach Phil Ralston saluted reserve forward Stephen Moyer and the rest of the Vikings’ defense for helping shift momentum with the pair of charges as the J-Hawks looked to stretch their lead.

“When you’re trying to drive the lane and you get a turnover and a foul on the play, it kind of takes away a little bit of your spirit going to the basket,” Ralston said.

Still, trailing 40-31, the Vikings needed to relieve mounting offensive tension, and senior guard Pace Temple came through with a sorely needed 3-pointer at the 2:36 mark of the

third quarter to draw the Vikings (28-3) within six points.

Temple also hit a pull-up jumper early in the fourth quarter that shaved Jefferson’s advantage from five points to three.

“We’re not looking at the scoreboard,” Temple said of chasing the deficit. “We’re looking at the scoreboard to see how much time we have. But we’re always believing. We’re working our butts off to get the ‘W.’ Tonight we were able to get it done, but we need to improve a lot.”

The Vikings enjoyed a monster size advantage against Jefferson (23-9) – which has nobody taller than 6-foot-5 in its lineup – but struggled to take advantage for much of the night.

“There was a small guy on

Nate [Navigato], Nate’s got a foot on the kid, and we couldn’t seem to get him the ball in good positions,” Ralston said.

“Jefferson made some great adjustments to that and started doubling. … But I thought our kids were still going to the basket and being aggressive at the offensive end.”

The Vikings wore down the J-Hawks in the paint as the second half unfolded, earning frequent trips to the free throw line as Jefferson fouled to prevent Geneva from point-blank opportunities.

A technical foul on Jefferson standout ML Moore (gamehigh 24 points) with the score tied at 46 and 4:43 to play in the fourth quarter put Navigato at the line for a pair.

Then point guard Pace Temple drilled an open 3, and the turnaround was on.

Of course, oft-erratic Jefferson shooting helped, but the Vikings adapted well, moving the ball more fluidly and attacking the rim.

“Sometimes, we lose focus a little bit in a game and stuff. That’s happened to us before in the season, multiple times,” Chambers said. “But in the end, we know we have to win and we just do what we have to do and just take over.”

Usually, that equates to slowing the game down – passing around to find the best shot at one end and playing assertive defense on the other.

The question is, and we all know how my neighbors would answer: Will that release valve be equally at the ready if Geneva needs it against Auburn?

“When you go in [the locker room] and you’ve got eight seniors, and they’re just bawling, not every team has that commitment,” Brannan said. “We talk a lot about how there’s a difference being interested in something and being committed to something. All these kids are committed, so very proud of them.”

DeKALB – The folks sitting behind me at Wednesday’s 4A DeKalb Sectional semifinal boys basketball game played devil’s advocate like Steve Harvey does “Family Feud.”

Gazing at Geneva’s raucous Blue Crue student section and plenty of adult backers down the stretch of the Vikings’ win against Rockford Jefferson, one of them peered deeper.

“They’re smiling now,” he said, “but I don’t think they’re going to be smiling Friday.”

That’s when Geneva meets one-loss Rockford Auburn for the sectional title. When prognosticators such as the folks sitting behind me figure the Knights’ athleticism will neutralize Geneva’s size. And then some.

To that end, the Vikings thanked the J-Hawks beyond the traditional handshake line after a 63-54 win.

“These guys were real fast,” Geneva junior forward Sean Chambers said. “We haven’t seen speed like this before, but it was good to see these guys, and it should help us with Auburn, too.”

Gentry quick as a Jackrabbit Standout Saints point guard commits to South Dakota State

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com St. Charles East senior guard Cole Gentry played in the most boisterous atmosphere of his high school career in Friday’s season-ending loss to host Geneva.

On Tuesday, he was in the midst of another ebullient crowd as he watched South Dakota StatebattleNorthDakotaStatein the Summit League conference championship game, an experience that solidified a life-altering decision. Gentry committed to South Dakota State during a campus visit Wednesday about 14 hours after the Jackrabbits’ heartbreaking, one-point loss.

The conference tournament final was contested in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, about 60 miles from South Dakota State’s campus in Brookings.

“It was a great environment there,” Gentry said of the nationally televised showdown. “There were probably 9,000 or 10,000 people there. I was thinking the Geneva crowd was loud and full and there was probably 2,000 at that game. It was a crazy environment that got me excited.”

Gentry, a creative point guard known for his floor vision as much as his considerable scoring punch – he shot 50 percent from 3-point land as a senior – said the Jackrabbits’ recent success played a leading factor in his decision. South Dakota State has appeared in the NCAA men’s tournament two of the past four seasons and is 23-10 this year after being edged by the rival Bison.

“I value winning, so that was another big reason,” Gentry said. “They’ve had success.

They’ve been to the NCAA tour-

nament, this year they’re going to the NIT. That’s something that meant a lot to me in the process.”

Gentry averaged about 19 points a game in leading East to a 24-4 season that concluded with a gut-wrenching, 73-70 loss to a Geneva team with which the Saints shared the Upstate Eight Conference River title.

Cole Gentry While Gentry’s ball-handling prowess, quickness, shooting and passing tend to dazzle spectators and coaches alike, his modest stature – he is 5-foot-11, 165 pounds – turned his Division I upside into a debate.

He opted not to commit to smaller schools such as Lewis and Augustana before his senior year, believing one more season of high school basketball could

convince some Division I coaches he belonged. That held true as Maryland-Baltimore County, Furman and South Dakota State picked up the chase in the early months of 2015.

Jackrabbits coach Scott Nagy and his staff appreciated Gentry’s slick floor game.

“The coach said he liked the way I run ball screens,” Gentry said. “He said my decision-making is the biggest thing they liked because they like to play fast but to play fast they have to have someone making good decisions playing at that speed, so he said that was big part of it, and then being able to bring leadership and being somewhat of a coach on the floor is important to them, and they can see me doing that for them.”

Gentry had lunch with South Dakota State coaches Wednesday, then verbally committed

during a chat at the coaches’ office. He was scheduled to visit UM-Baltimore County this week.

“They brought that up and said ‘Are you still going to take that visit?’ and I said ‘No, this is where I want to play basketball the next four years,’ ” Gentry said. “That was me essentially committing right there.”

Gentry and his father, Alan, planned the “spontaneous” drive northwest after South Dakota State offered a scholarship Monday. While it’s about 8½ hours to Brookings, Gentry noted conference games against opponents such as Western Illinois, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne and Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis will offer family and friends closer options to watch him play.

Gentry is leaning toward a potential major in the social sciences and already is pondering an eventual foray into coaching.

A 6-footer from St. Charles, Hart also had been in contact with schools such as Auburn and Indiana.

“She’s obviously tall and athletic, and she’s been very talented since she’s been up with us as a freshman,” Royals coach Rachel Hartmann said. “She is a great kid, too. She listens. There are things during the season that I could tell her, ‘You need to change this if you want to be a significant contributor,’ and she worked on it right away.”

Northwestern finished 16-15 in 2014, including a 6-14 mark in Big Ten play.

“Northwestern has a great program, and Meegan will fit in well there,” Hartmann said.

Froedden steps down as Wheaton Academy coach WEST CHICAGO – Wheaton Academy boys basketball coach and assistant athletic director Pete Froedden will resign his positions at the end of the school year.

Froedden – an assistant at his alma mater, Lipscomb, before taking the reins of the Warriors’ program entering the 2013-14 season – told school officials he’ll be exploring college opportunities.

Froedden relished the opportunity to coach his son, Christian, while at Wheaton Academy. He finished 25-31 in two seasons.

Not the greatest tendency when that’s her go-to event in collegiate gymnastics.

“Actually, I’m really scared of bars,” Pipp said.

“But I work the hardest on it because I know I’m scared of it.”

The Geneva High School grad is competing in her freshman year at Winona State University in Minnesota. And whether or not fear has been a factor – and it definitely has been – she’s killing it on the uneven bars this season.

In just the second meet of the season, Pipp broke the school record with a 9.675 on the uneven bars.

But it hasn’t been easy.

Pipp has had to work extremely hard to overcome her fears on the event she’s chose to make her specialty. It goes beyond the expected physical labor. As a motivating factor to face her fears head on, she convinces herself that horrible consequences will result in her not trying a particularly frightening move.

“It was really hard. I would go into my club like an hour early every day to work on my fears,” Pipp said. “My coaches in club and here really helped me work through it, and they’ve all been really supportive of my fears.

“Right now, I have to have somebody tell me to go for it or I won’t let go. And then I’m like, ‘If I don’t go for my double layout, I can never watch “Friends” again.’ Stuff like that. I just take baby steps and work up to doing the real thing like every day. But I end up doing it eventually.”

There’s even been financial motivations.

“When I was in club, I told my coach that if I didn’t go for it, I would have to buy him 50 Hooters wings,” she said.

“And that would make me go for it.”

But Pipp certainly has conquered those fears, and

it’s led her to the level she’s competing at now, which she admits is different from high school. There’s more of a team-oriented focus, she explained.

It comes with its perks, too. Pipp and her teammates opened the season with a trip to Alaska – that’s where she scored that record-breaking 9.675 – which made her previous furthest-away competition, in Florida, seem like it was right next door.

“It was beautiful,” she recounted. “They had just got a new facility, and right when we got there we got to practice in their new gym and it was the most amazing gym I’d ever been in in my life. And then we saw all these beautiful mountains and these sunsets. We got to go dogsledding with the guy who’s won the Iditarod the last couple years. We got to go on a 10-minute ride in the sled with some of the dogs that he has there. Another day, we took the tram up to the top of a mountain, and it was beautiful. We ate lunch at the top of this mountain. That was a really cool experience, too.”

In addition to never thinking she’d be competing in the 50th state, she also figured she’d never be going there for the nice weather.

“When we went there, it was a negative temperature in Minnesota, and we went there and it was 30 and we’re like, ‘Oh my god, this feels amazing.’ ” Despite an already very successful season, Pipp has more goals in mind. The WIAC conference championships are coming up this weekend. Her New Year’s resolution was to help lead her team to the national championships in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. And she also wants to better her personal best on the bars, hoping to hit a 9.700.

What’s her motivation this time?

“I don’t know,” she said.

“If I don’t get it, I’ll probably never be able to eat bagels again.”

Studies show chiropractic can give relief for back pain Dear Doctor K: I’ve been having back problems, and frankly, my regular doctor hasn’t come up with treatments that help me much. So I’m wondering: What happens during chiropractic treatment? What types of pain can it relieve?

Dear Reader: Regular readers of this column know that I’m not very stuffy. I think treatments that are called “complementary” or “alternative” medicine should not be dismissed out of hand. Instead, those treatments that many people have found helpful – and that are not clearly dangerous – should be studied in the same way that traditional medical treatments are.

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine. It is based on the belief that the structure of the body, particularly the spine, affects the function of every part of the body. Chiropractors try to correct the body’s alignment to relieve pain and improve function and to help the body heal itself.

The mainstay of chiropractic is spinal manipulation. This generic term is used for any kind of therapeutic movement of the spine. More precisely, it is the application of quick but strong

That distinctive noise is believed to be caused by the breaking of a vacuum or the release of a bubble into the synovial fluid – the clear, thick fluid that lubricates the spinal and other joints.

Spinal manipulation can be done directly by pushing on the vertebrae, or done indirectly by twisting the neck or upper part of the body. It should be done to only one spinal joint at a time.

Chiropractors accomplish this by positioning the body so the force they exert is focused on one joint while parts of the spine above and below it are held very still. Most chiropractic treatments take between 10 and 20 minutes.

Chiropractic care now also includes a wide variety of other treatments. For example, a chiropractor may provide exercise education. Or he or she may provide

ergonomic training. This teaches you how to walk, sit and stand in a way that limits back strain.

The ultimate goal of chiropractic is to relieve pain and help patients better manage their condition at home. Chiropractors often work together with primary care doctors and pain experts.

Studies have looked at the effectiveness of chiropractic to treat a variety of problems and conditions. A recent review concluded that spinal manipulation may be helpful for back pain, migraine headaches, neck pain and whiplash. But the evidence did not support the usefulness of chiropractic for asthma, hypertension, sciatica or menstrual pain.

From my knowledge of various studies, I agree with these conclusions. As with research in many areas of medicine, the studies conducted so far are not perfect. Someday, more evidence may emerge that causes me to change my mind. But for now, I support the studies.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 13 and am living with my brother and his wife because our parents are in the midst of a messy divorce. My brother and his wife have really been good to me and make me feel much more comfortable than when I was at home with our parents fighting all the time. My brother and I have always been really close and his wife is also doing everything to help me through this. She even helps me with my homework if I get stuck.

My brother has a job where he has to work late on Friday and Saturday nights, so he usually sleeps late on Saturday and Sunday. I notice that my sister-inlaw sometimes sneaks into the bedroom when he is sleeping and takes some cash out of his wallet. When I first noticed it I asked her if he would get mad about it, but she said he wouldn’t care.

She also asked me not to say anything about her “sneak attack.”

Do you think this is right, or should I tell my brother about it?

Last night, Mom asked me what I would like for my birthday. I told her I loved her and that I really wanted her to quit smoking. She said that she didn’t think it was possible for her to stop altogether, but that maybe she could smoke just every other day.

I was excited about this and thought that at least not smoking every single day was a good idea to start with. But then my dad said that it probably wouldn’t do much good because she would still be considered a regular smoker.

Do you think skipping every other day would help my mom quit?

Bridge players who are flexible in their thinking tend to be efficient. Look at the North hand in this deal. North opened one club, and South responded one heart.

What should North have rebid?

There is no call that perfectly describes that North hand. Four clubs would be great if it indicated three-card heart support, but it requires four cards in partner’s major. Still, it is a possible choice.

North is far too strong to rebid three clubs (although that might work out well here). My choice would be three no-trump. This shows a hand too strong for a three-club rebid; typically 18 or 19 high-card points, six-plus excellent clubs, stoppers in the unbid suits and often a singleton in responder’s suit. (This last factor is the bid’s main minus.)

After three no-trump, South will want to ask for aces – yet another problem! But if South can learn that his partner has three aces, he will jump to seven hearts, confident that he can make it by establishing dummy’s club suit.

At the table I watched this deal being played, North rebid two notrump, indicating a balanced 18 or 19 points. South used Gerber twice (bidding four clubs and five clubs) to ask for aces and kings, then signed off in six no-trump. True, he could count only 12 tricks (two spades, six hearts, two diamonds and two clubs), but he should have taken a shot at seven hearts. That contract surely would have had some play – and dummy would have been a pleasant surprise.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, joined Post staff writer Jura Koncius last week on our Home Front online chat.

Here is an edited excerpt: Q: I was sure I wanted a white kitchen (white cabinets, white marble countertops) with gray walls, but I am suddenly seeing that color scheme everywhere and am now completely sick of the white kitchen/gray walls combination.

Any ideas on how to add some color to a kitchen? I was thinking of a butcher block island, pietra cardosa countertops and cabinets painted Farrow & Ball’s Bluegreen or Cooking Apple Green.

A: Actually, you have already answered your question!

Thank you for mentioning what you are thinking about doing with color because that should always be the first clue about the direction to go in. If you are bored with blandness and feel the need for color, then go with the Cooking Apple Green. It will feel cheery and vibrant.

As I am constantly telling people, be a bit brave with your choices, especially with paint colors, as they can be changed so easily when you get tired of them and feel it is time for another change.

Q: My Shaker-style kitchen

cabinets are a warm cream with a matching cream subway tile backsplash.

Countertops are absolute black granite. The walls are a warm blush/beige color with white trim. I would like to repaint the walls a lighter neutral and prefer light grays. I’m willing to repaint the cabinets, but I’m stuck with the cream backsplash.

Any ideas for a wall color that will complement the tile backsplash without feeling too beige?

A: Your existing features set you up to do almost any color, as long as the color is repeated in other accents in the room. You can certainly do a warm gray, since you are leaning toward a gray. It doesn’t sound like you need to paint the cabinets, so try painting the walls first.

Q: What are the best colors for a bedroom? I mean colors that inspire rest and relaxation.

A: Conventional wisdom has it that the best shades for relaxation in a bedroom are in the blues and greens, or any variation of those two shades.

However, if you are not a blue (or green) person, a perfect shade to use that gives a feeling of relaxation is a periwinkle blue.

It’s the happiest of the blue tones because it has a slightly red base to it, and that is what introduces a bit of energy into the space.
