A look into a Civil War strongbox

By BRENDA SCHORY YjZ_fip7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd GENEVA – As a Civil War paymaster for the 52nd Illinois Infantry Regiment, Major Joseph H. Mayborne traveled with a 200-pound bulletproof strongbox loaded down with coins and cash.

It was a precious cargo that Mayborne carried, as it was the Union soldiers’ pay. Paymasters always were under threat of being robbed, and though he had guards, Mayborne also carried a sidearm.

Geneva History Museum curator Jessica Strube presented a rare glimpse into the life of Mayborne, the Civil War paymaster, 19th-century Geneva attorney, state senator and member of the board of supervisors, now known as the County Board.

The donation came from Jack Burgess, who found the strongbox behind a closet in Mayborne’s former house at 228 N. Second St., and donated it to the history museum, Strube said. Mayborne had the house built in 1855. “It’s such a gem for us, for our archives, for the community to do research for,� Strube said. “We are very, very fortunate to have it.�

The box contained more than 1,000 pieces, including personal letters and correspondence, and papers from Mayborne’s legal practice, she said.

Mayborne was born in England in 1821 and moved to the U.S. when he was 5 and lived near Jamestown, where he was educated. He came to

He married Teresa Johnson and had four daughters, but no grandchildren, so his lineage ended with his children, Strube said. Mayborne himself died of paralysis in 1871 at his home, she said.

He had a lot of health issues, many probably stemming from his war service as paymaster, including smallpox.

Mayborne had “a thankless role� in the military, as the paymaster job was complicated, Strube said.

Paymasters were responsible for two regiments. They had to keep track of the details of the pay table, includ-

ing withholding taxes from soldiers’ pay, and do it all without a computer or calculator, she said. “In browsing through this ‘Army Paymasters Manual’ of the Civil War, it was apparent that the job proved to be complicated and time-consuming,� Strube said. “At the time, the federal army was one of the largest military organizations ever assembled with nearly 1 million men under arms spread out from Virginia to the Mexico Territory. And each man had to be paid.�

A paymaster would earn $2,000 a year and be responsible for $3 million in payroll,

she said. Paymasters lived outside the war, with soldiers pulled out to collect their pay.

But when trench warfare began in 1864-65, paymasters were expected to go into dangerous territory to distribute pay. A handwritten itinerary showed how Mayborne traveled from Annapolis to Chicago to St. Paul, Burlington, Davenport, then back to St. Paul and Chicago, for which he was paid 6 cents a mile, Strube said.

The box also contained a soldier’s letter, warning that men in his company would desert if their pay was late and they were unable to support their families back home.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com HAMPSHIRE TOWNSHIP – More than 100 volunteers converged on a farm in rural Hampshire Township on Tuesday morning to move nearly 100 animals from an impounded petting zoo to an undisclosed location near Maple Park.

The volunteers responded after a call went out from Kane County Animal Control seeking help in transporting the animals – everything from goats, ducks and rabbits to horses, llamas and alpacas. The animals’ owner was arrested last week, and the property owner where she was a tenant wanted the animals moved, officials said.

The first to be loaded for the move were small Nubian goats, bleating softly as each volunteer carried one up to a trailer tagged with, “Dave Rowley Paint and Quarter Horses, Evansville, Wis.” Campton Hills resident Bob Klock, a volunteer, said his wife encouraged him to participate.

“I took a day off of work to come out here with a trailer and help,” Klock said.

After the goats were loaded, it was the llamas and alpacas’ turn to step into another hauler tagged with the name Lenkaitis Holsteins, owned by Al Lenkaitis, a Campton Hills trustee and local dairy farmer.

“I’m here to help move some animals,” Lenkaitis said.

“We should be able to get everything moved out to a better place.”

Volunteers and those with the ability to haul large animals were asked to start at the animal control headquarters in Geneva and drive out to the Hampshire Township location.

Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said seven to 10 trucks and haulers already were onsite when the caravan from animal control headquarters in Geneva arrived.

“I think we got more volunteers and more people that have showed up than we ever could have imagined,” Gengler said. “The caravan [from Geneva] was huge. ... It’s cool to see that many people willing to give up their own time to help.”

In total, 11 animals and a horse fetus were found dead, and 94 were in need of food and water. The horse and fetus were found on a farm near Maple Park, and the rest were found at the Hampshire Township location, officials said.

A plea-setting for Fiebelkorn

Kaleen Barbera, from Field of Dreams Horse Rescue in Batavia, was among the volunteers helping to move the animals. She said their horse rescue might receive some of the animals.

“We’ll see what they end up needing help with,” Barbera said. “We have a lot of resourc-

Sauceda said the county also filed court papers to take the animals from Fiebelkorn.

A hearing on the animals’ forfeiture is set for Thursday, so that the animals become the county’s property, he said.

“At that point, I can start adopting and sending them to rescues to be loved,” Sauceda said. “That’s the goal.”

Waste Management manages Settlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hill, a closed landfill in Geneva.

The county has been working on plans to redevelop the 700-acre property for recreational use.

Donahue last week accused the waste-hauling com-

pany of refusing to negotiate the closure and recreational end-use of the site.

During the County Board meeting Tuesday, Donahue, R-Geneva, described discussions with Waste Management representatives that morning as â&#x20AC;&#x153;generally productiveâ&#x20AC;? and updated the board with goals and expectations for the project.

Waste Management representatives attended but did not speak during the County Board meeting. Afterward, spokesperson Lisa Disbrow said the company is pleased with the plan to move forward.

Board member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, was one of the few who voted against the request and urged the board to â&#x20AC;&#x153;put the brakesâ&#x20AC;? on the project.

As he did in committee, he suggested making the range available to the public for concealed-carry training.

Sheriff Pat Perez said opening the facility to the public for firearms training would conflict with existing law, and it would open the county to â&#x20AC;&#x153;tremendousâ&#x20AC;? liability.

He offered a few situations as examples, including one about someone who gets qualified by Kane County and then commits a crime. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Get the checkbook out because the county is going to be

sued,â&#x20AC;? Perez said.

Board member Michael Kenyon, R-South Elgin, said the board always has wanted the best tools for its police force, and it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t become the best by being cheap. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This will be money well spent,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Construction costs are estimated at $1,897,342. Construction is expected to begin in May with the facility ready for occupation by October, those involved with the project said.

In other news, Chairman Chris Lauzen announced at the start of the meeting that discussion about the proposed 5 percent raises for various directors would be moved to the April board meeting.

Many neighbors oppose A&P’s expansion plans

She said she doesn’t want to see A&P expand its operations. Heyob and her neighbors have voiced objections to a proposal to rezone 2.2 acres from residential use to limited industrial use so A&P can put a shop and office on the land.

“This piece of property is surrounded by residential property on three sides, and across the street is residential,” said Heyob, who has lived in her home for 27 years and is a former Maple Park

village trustee. “How will this affect the residents and their property values?”

She said that children already climb on the A&P Grain equipment because there is no fence separating the property from a nearby playground.

Plan commissioners Thursday unanimously approved the plans following a public hearing. The village received 41 responses against the proposal, with one response in favor of the plan.

The Maple Park Village Board is set to vote on the plans at its meeting at 7 p.m. April 1 in the Maple Park Civic Center, 302 Willow St. A&P Grain President David Altepeter declined to discuss the proposal. The com-

pany sells grain handling equipment.

Maple Park Village President Kathy Curtis said she still has questions about the proposal.

“I haven’t heard enough information [about the proposal],” Curtis said. “My questions have not been answered.”

Former Maple Park village trustee Dan Humme also voiced objections to the proposal.

“I live a couple of blocks away from A&P Grain, and I can hear them sometimes in the morning and the evening,” Humme said. “Industrial doesn’t belong there at all. If he’s looking to expand, he can buy a lot in an industri-

Middle-school Spanish gets green light in Kaneland Board won’t be reinstating alternative after-practice transportation routes

The school board unanimously approved the addition Monday night at its meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School. Spanish 1 will be added in a twoyear sequence, and it will be offered to seventh- and eighth-graders starting in

the fall at Harter.

It is the first time Kaneland will have offered a permanent Spanish option at the middle school level.

Before 2009, it was offered as an exploratory class, meaning students were able to take a nine-week session officials described as “very introductory.” The introduction of Spanish 1 in the middle school would allow students the ability to take a fifth year of Spanish as high school seniors.

As part of the move, the entire early childhood program will be housed at Blackberry Creek. Currently, there are three programs at Blackberry Creek and one at John Shields Elementary School in Sugar Grove.

The position was approved at a salary of $70,000, though the district will make some cuts to help pay for it. There will be an elimination of the outplacement staffing stipend of $7,500, as well as the elimination of two paraprofessionals,

which will bring a savings of $48,000. The board unanimously approved the move.

Also, board members did not wish to pursue more information about the possibility of reinstating after-practice transportation routes. The issue has been explored at recent meetings, but board members said the cost – which would be about $200,000 – would be too high.

Some board members had asked about what the cost might be if a fee were to be charged for those who use the service. Officials said if $100 were charged a semester, the cost would be only slightly lower – about $150,000.

Algin Sanders, 29, of the 200 block of Mill Street, Batavia, was arrested at 2:02 a.m.

Sunday and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving too fast for conditions after his car veered into the cemetery.

The city operates the West Batavia Cemetery at 900 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

Sanders’ vehicle hit trees and grass in the cemetery and damaged headstones on the west side of the cemetery, causing an unknown amount of damage, according to the police report.

In May 2011, an Elgin man lost control of his vehicle and hit 12 headstones in the West Batavia Cemetery.

Kevin Malone, who was 26 at the time of the crash on May 21, 2011, was charged with improper lane use, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured vehicle, driving without a valid license and reckless driving.

He was ordered to serve 250 hours of community service and pay $1,700 in fines.

The headstones of Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke’s parents, Don and Catherine Schielke, along with his grandfather, Olaf Odee, were among those damaged in the crash.

The West Batavia Cemetery is not fenced.

The city also operates East Batavia Cemetery at 1100 N. Washington St.

Pheasant Run Resort and Spa, 4051 E. Main St., was sold Tuesday to Saint Charles Resort LLC, a collaborative group of experienced hotel investors and operators, according to a press release.

The 250-acre resort had been in foreclosure since 2011.

The release indicated that Hostmark Hospitality Group will manage the property and oversee a $5 million capital improvement project designed to rejuvenate the resort.

“This is an exceptional opportunity for our team to build upon the 50-year legacy of this property, revitalizing the resort’s impact on the surrounding community, its commerce, and employment opportunities,” Jerome F. Cataldo, president and CEO of Hostmark Hospitality Group, said in a written statement.

“We look forward to polishing the entire resort for a grand reintroduction to guests – past, present and future.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The sale of Pheasant Run came about four months after nearby Charlestowne Mall, 3800 E. Main St., officially changed hands.

“This purchase, the activity that’s taking place at the mall, the new road, new businesses popping up here and there, all bode well for a nice revival,” Mayor Ray Rogina said.

Amy Egolf, executive director of the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau, echoed the mayor’s excitement. She described the sale as great news for the resort and hotel community as a whole.

She noted Hostmark Hospitality has a significant portfolio.

by Edward McArdle in 1963.

Egolf said the McArdle family was instrumental in forming the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“Obviously, they’re very important to us, always have been,” she said of Pheasant Run.

Driver told police he didn’t see him

By SHAW MEDIA DeKALB – The Maple Park man who was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking near the intersection of Route 38 and Webster Road near DeKalb will help provide eyesight for two people.

Clarence R. Janecek III, 45, of 45W535 Welter Road, was walking near the intersection in a rural area east of DeKalb around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday when he was hit by a car traveling east on Route 38, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Janecek was a registered organ donor in Illinois, his sis- Clarence R. ter-in-law Ann Janecek III Janecek said.

Gift of Hope contacted the family Tuesday and told them his donation would give eyesight to two people who need it.

“He had a huge heart,” said Ann Janecek of Maple Park.

Sheriff’s deputies received a call from a passer-by about a person walking on Route 38 near Webster Road, and were en route when they received a second call about the accident, Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Gary Dumdie said. Deputies found Janecek lying unconscious on westbound Route 38, and a car off the road to the north.

The driver of the vehicle, German Gonzalez, 41, of DeKalb, told police he didn’t see Janecek before he hit him, Dumdie said. The driver stayed at the scene and called police. Janecek and Gonzalez were both taken to Kishwaukee Hospital.

Janecek was pronounced dead there, DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said.

Gonzalez was treated and released, and later charged with driving with a suspended license.

Panel supports electric option

By ERIC SCHELKOPF \jZ_\cbfg]7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Joint Committee of the Whole meeting voted 7-2 to recommend an option to address the electric utility’s increased purchase power costs and the need for additional revenues.

Aldermen recommended approval of an option that would raise electric rates in 2014 and 2015 in combination with a half-cent increase to the city’s home-rule sales tax in 2014. In addition, the option would apply different percentage increases to energy and demand for commercial and industrial customers.

“The energy and demand percentages for commercial and industrial customers could be modified to acknowledge the importance of these large customers,” Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen.

Voting “no” were 2nd Ward Alderman Marty Callahan and 3rd Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann. The full Batavia City Council is set to discuss the recommendation at its meeting Monday.

City staff had recommended the option. Holm told aldermen that the option would provide sufficient revenues and maintain comparable electric rates with surrounding utilities. Under the option, residents this year would see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates plus a $4 a month increase to the customer charge.

In 2015, residents would also see a 6.5 percent increase in their electric rates.

Hohmann said he couldn’t support a sales tax increase.

“The electric utility is the electric utility,” he said. “It needs to stand on its own.”

While 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said he not a big fan of using sales tax money, “if we go with a nonsales option, it hits everybody harder.”

The one-half penny of each $1 in sales could provide up to $1.5 million in additional funds, city officials said.

If aldermen decide against implementing the additional tax, then a 16 percent electric tax increase would be needed, city staff said.

Marcia Boyce, owner of Boyce Body Werks in Batavia, voiced her objections to increasing the sales tax.

“I don’t think that is an appropriate way to pay for the electric mess we are in,” she said, addressing aldermen.

In 2005, the Northern Illinois Municipal Power Agency, of which Batavia is a member, agreed to a longterm power contract to purchase electricity from Prairie State. Geneva and Rochelle are other members.

Batavia needs to increase electric rates for many reasons, including higher-than-anticipated construction costs related to the Prairie State project, the economic downtown and an associated unprecedented drop in the price of natural gas, which wholesale electric prices closely follow.

Supervisor named in Blackberry Township Board’s choice is Dornback, who oversees cemetery

By CHARLES MENCHACA Zd\eZ_XZX7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – The Blackberry Township Board on Tuesday selected a successor for its vacant township supervisor position.

The board voted 3-1 to appoint Fred Dornback, superintendent of the township cemetery, as the new supervisor. Trustee Jim Feece voted against the motion, instead nominating and voting for himself as a candidate for supervisor. No one else voted for Feece.

Dornback fills the vacancy left by Dennis Ryan, who resigned in February citing health reasons and disagreements with the board.

Dornback spoke for a few minutes after he took the

oath of office. He thanked those who placed their confidence and trust in him.

“My focus is going to be learning how to be a good supervisor,” he said.

Dornback asked to terminate the $5,200 yearly stipend he receives as superintendent of the township cemetery. He said he will work there as a volunteer until a replacement is found.

The board also addressed its efforts to renew its lease to use McNair Field for baseball. The township’s annual lease of $1 expired in April 2013.

The township this week will likely receive the latest draft proposal for a oneyear lease for McNair Field, Dornback said.

Negotiations are also ongoing to purchase land south of the field, trustee Jim Michels said.

Ryan had opposed the plans because he thought it was the equivalent of the township forming a park district without referendum.

Planned regulations on e-cigs are overdue BLOOMBERG NEWS Could someone please send the Food and Drug Administration a copy of the latest study on teenagers and e-cigarettes? The agency obviously needs a push to come out with its overdue regulations.

Drawn from two surveys of tens of thousands of American middle-school and high-school students, the research found that adolescents

who tried battery-powered nicotine vaporizers were more likely to smoke tobacco cigarettes.

And – if the kids were already regular smokers at the time they experimented with “vaping” – they became less likely to quit. It’s evidence, as the authors say, that e-cigarettes are “aggravating rather than ameliorating the tobacco epidemic among youths.”

This comes as no surprise, because while hardened adult smokers might find that e-cigarettes help them quit the un-prefixed kind, teenagers are more likely to try vaping before they try smoking.

Yet the FDA has still not begun to regulate e-cigarettes, despite pledging to do so by last fall. Some states and cities – including, just this week, Los Angeles – have already started to impose regulations.

Meanwhile, the number of vapers keeps rising; U.S. consumers will spend $3 billion on e-cigarettes this year, twice last year’s total.

Last month, the European Parliament passed a list of e-cigarette restrictions, including a ban on advertisements, a requirement for childproof packaging with pictorial safety warnings, and a limit on nicotine content.

He appears at Senior Services Associates monthly for their programs and even participated in one of their variety shows, which validates how unpretentious he is. He was instrumental in coordinating a fun/educational program entitled “Who’s Knocking At [Your] Door,” demonstrating to a full house of over 300 seniors to question and ID people who knock on their door.

More research is still needed to discern the specific health hazards of electronic cigarettes, as well as their relative safety compared with burning tobacco. Yet it’s not too soon to conclude that regulation is needed to keep them out of the hands of children.

jschwab@shawmedia.com DeKALB – From the moment Mooseheart’s big three – literally, a BIG three – became eligible, visions of an unprecedented downstate run for the Red Ramblers’ boys basketball program were impossible to suppress.

After the South Sudanese transfer students sat out as sophomores, Akim Nyang, Makur Puou and Mangisto Deng helped lead Mooseheart to a dynamite season last year, but it ended with a jarring collapse in a sectional loss to Chicagoland Jewish.

On Tuesday, the Ramblers’ leaders cashed in on their shot to make amends. Mooseheart routed Lanark Eastland, 59-41, in an IHSA Class 1A Northern Illinois University Supersectional, earning the program its first downstate berth and ensuring the school its first IHSA team trophy.

“Like [Mangisto Deng] keeps saying, we walked out [last year] with broken hearts,” Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said. “And this year, we’re not.

We’re extremely happy. We have two more games.”

In Friday’s 1A state semifinal, Mooseheart will face western Illinois power Mendon Unity, a 67-49 winner Tuesday over Waterloo Gibault in the Jacksonville Supersectional.

After Tuesday’s win, a scene reminiscent of so many others the past couple of years unfolded for Mooseheart (27-5). Players signed autographs, lifted small children skyward and smiled wide.

Deng said his jubilation was tempered considering how realistic it is for the Ramblers to go all the way. Mooseheart has yet to lose to a 1A team with its core group; two of the Ramblers’ losses came with usual JV players filling in at the conference tournament.

“I’m excited but I’m not that excited, you know what I mean?” Deng said. “I want to go to state. I’m not saying nobody’s going to beat us because we have to go over there and win it. But if we win it … it’s going to be a great feeling, to make the history.”

Eastland coach Tony Dunlap – whose Cougars finished fourth in Class 1A last year – thought his squad’s tentative start set a problematic tone.

“They just weren’t ready, mentally,” Dunlap said. “I thought we’d be the more experienced team walking on the floor, and both teams looked like it was the first time ever walking on the floor at supers.

The first three or four minutes were a big difference in the game. We had a lot of opportunities, and we didn’t take advantage of it.”

Eastland (26-5) scored the last six points of the first half to come within 21-13 at halftime, but Puou scored eight of his game-high 24 points in the opening minutes of the third quarter, and the Ramblers were in strong shape from then on.

Despite their tallest player standing 6-foot-5 – three of Mooseheart’s starters are taller – the Cougars out-rebounded the Ramblers, 39-38. Eastland’s 17 offensive rebounds were 10 more than Mooseheart managed.

Ahrens said he thinks Tuesday marked the first game all season his team lost the rebounding battle, which figures to be a popular talking point at practice between now and Friday.

“We’re going to talk about how to get the rebound first because our team is not an offensive team. We’re a defensive team,” Deng said. “If we play great defense, we’re going to win, so we’re definitely going to talk about it.”

Despite its rebounding prowess, Eastland – likely thrown off-kilter by a combination of Mooseheart’s vaunted size and the airy environs at NIU’s Convocation Center – shot only 24 percent on the night, going 15 of 63 from the floor. Skylar Paulson scored 17 points and Dalton

Shaner added 14, though Shaner needed 25 shots to get there.

Free-throw shooting is a main weakness for Mooseheart. The Ramblers were 16 of 27 from the line against the Cougars, an OK showing by their standards. They spent much of the fourth quarter at the line.

“I wasn’t as sick to my stomach as I was a couple games back before against Chicago Hope,” Ahrens said. “I thought we did a lot better.”

Puou had 17 rebounds and five blocks to go with his 24 points. Deng scored 15 points and reserve guard JJ Udunsi added nine points for the Ramblers.

A memorable week awaits for Mooseheart’s players, but Ahrens said the team’s triumph resonates far beyond this year’s Ramblers.

“It’s just great that everyone gets to enjoy it,” Ahrens said.

“We have over a million Moose members that are going to be able to sit here and enjoy it as much as these kids do because those are the guys that give us an opportunity to get kids to play basketball for us. It’s not just my guys in the locker room and us. It’s a community of Moose members that absolutely love us. They’re going to experience this first trophy as much as we are.”

Given Kaneland’s first half against Rockford Lutheran, the Knights envisioned such a scenario salting away a win.

They experienced the opposite.

The Knights overcame an early hole before watching senior Ty Carlson torch the Crusaders for 29 first-half points. After halftime, however, Kaneland’s perch grew far less cushy, as an 11-point edge swiftly and sourly transformed into to a 76-61 defeat.

“At halftime, we were really excited. The kids were pumped,” Knights coach Brian Johnson said. “I almost think it crept into their mind, like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to win this game.’ Against a team like Rockford Lutheran that’s very well-coached and has so many guys that can put it in the hole, you can’t have that mentality, and I thought that’s where our downfall started.”

The Crusaders (28-3) advanced to Friday’s sectional final against the winner of tonight’s semifinal between Sycamore and Marian Central.

A quartet of double-figure scorers – Thomas Kopelman (21), Joseph Kellen (19), James Robinson (17) and Nate Wieting (13) – turned up the urgency after the break.

Robinson proved especially effective on both ends of the floor after taking the assignment to defend Carlson in the second half. While the senior wing closed his career with 38 points, Carlson’s final nine came amid staunch pressure.

Rockford Lutheran also capitalized on senior point guard Drew David’s foul trouble, harrassing Kaneland ballhandlers and clogging passing lanes.

“When we picked up the defense, we knew we could make it happen on the offensive end,” Robinson said.

“It was just one of those halves where everything I put up went in,” Carlson said.

“You know, I felt good. I can’t say enough about my teammates. Drew finding me in transition was awesome, and my shots fell. That’s about it.”

Only three other Knights scored in the game, which ultimately added up. Fellow senior John Pruett (15 points) was the only other Kaneland player in double figures.

Rockford Lutheran outscored Kaneland, 31-11, in the third quarter after trailing, 3726, at halftime.

Limited to only three first-

half rebounds, the Crusaders started their climb by getting more aggressive under the boards and attacking the basket.

“What it really was, was we wanted to really pick up the tempo,” Crusaders coach Tom Guse said. “We just said, ‘Look, if we’re going to go down, we’re going to go down swinging.’ It wasn’t about Xs and Os at halftime. It had nothing to do with Xs and Os. It was about heart, challenging these guys to really work in the second half at trying to get the ball up the floor, get the ball to the hole, get them in foul trouble. And they executed perfectly.”

Grit still told only part of the story. The Crusaders drilled 10 3s, including their first five attempts.

A Carlson 3 with 5:54 left in the game brought Kaneland to within 57-55, but the Knights did not score again until more than four minutes later. Another Carlson 3 snapped a 14-0 Crusaders run that effectively put the game away.

“I think at one point we did let our heads get too high, but we came out and we battled in the second half,” Carlson said.

“And things didn’t go our way, but overall, I think we played tough.”

Johnson knows it will take time, but hopes the Knights

New AD pledges loyalty to Knights

By JAY SCHWAB ajZ_nXY7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd Noting the possibility of the Kaneland and Sycamore boys basketball teams meeting in a sectional championship game Friday, Peter Goff acknowledged his sports world is about to become a little messier.

“Hopefully this Friday, it’s tricky, where Kaneland and Sycamore both play in the sectional championship,” said Goff, currentPeter Goff ly dean of students at Sycamore and Kaneland’s new athletic director, effective July 1.

Goff was approved Monday night by Kaneland’s school board as the Knights’ new athletic director. A Sycamore resident, Goff’s loyalties will overlap even moreso going forward when his daughter, Chloe, competes for Sycamore, a main rival of Kaneland’s. Chloe Goff is a sophomore basketball, volleyball and track athlete for the Spartans.

Goff said one of his daughter’s friends helped defray any potential tension.

“One of them said, ‘You’ll never be my archrival, Mr. Goff. I’m happy for you.’

Yeah, it’ll be tricky, but I’m going to be a Knight, and I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “That’s the thing my daughter and I really talked

about. … She might want that change of her dad not being in school anymore so she doesn’t feel like she has that eye on her all the time. But, it’s my daughter, and I think people understand what’s going on.”

Goff, 46, is in his third year as dean at Sycamore after coaching boys basketball at Ashton-Franklin Center, Sterling and Bloomington.

Much of his coaching success came at Sterling, where he mentored Joseph Bertrand, now a senior guard at Illinois.

Goff was hired at a salary of $85,000 plus benefits, according to Kaneland’s news release. Kaneland has used interim leadership to run its athletic department this year after former AD Leigh Jaffke resigned in October.

Goff was chosen from a pool of 103 applicants, according to Kaneland’s release.

He and his wife, Molly, have three daughters, with Chloe being the youngest.

Despite not coaching at Sycamore, Goff said he has worked with the school’s administration to learn more about the management end of high school athletics.

He said his goal at Kaneland will be to help give student-athletes “the experience of a lifetime” competing for the Knights, and he already has an answer to the rhetorical “Where is Kaneland?” chant that surely will play better in Maple Park than Sycamore.

Geneva boys hoops to fight complacency, West Aurora After reaching a signature milestone long circled on the program’s to-do list, the Geneva boys basketball team faces not only a challenging opponent tonight, but the task of recalibrating its goals on the fly.

The Vikings nabbed the program’s first regional title Friday since the 1985-86 season – one of the area’s more startling pieces of trivia – and it was a goal coach Phil Ralston and company made no attempt to downplay.

Now that it’s been achieved, the Vikings will have to show they’re still hungry when they face powerhouse West Aurora in tonight’s IHSA Class 4A East Aurora Sectional semifinal.

Ralston sounds the part of a coach who is anything but complacent, saying the Vikings will take a “survival mode” mindset onto the floor.

“It’s focusing on what we need to do to be able to beat an extremely talented and experienced West Aurora team,” Ralston said. “It’s

The Vikings haven’t pressed as much with this year’s team as some of Ralston’s past squads, but that changed in the fourth quarter as desperation was in full effect.

:fek`el\[ ]ifd gX^\ )' The Vikings (24-5) vanquished a pair of dangerous teams last week in Plainfield East (led by Illinois recruit Aaron Jordan) and Bolingbrook (featuring Division I prospect Prentiss Nixon).

No. 2 seed West Aurora (24-4) doesn’t have the size of either of those teams but the Blackhawks have a deeper collection of slashers capable of exploiting gaps in a defense, Ralston said. While Walker is West Aurora’s marquee player, Ralston identified 6-foot-4 forward Roland Griffin as a major factor in the Vikings’ prospects for another upset.

“He is the difference-maker for them,” Ralston said.

“He can shoot the 3 but he’s probably more dangerous on his drives to the basket, and he really is their only true post that can play with his back to the basket as well.

Those are going to be difficult things for us to stop.”

Geneva’s bid to end its regional drought in 2013 was ended by the Blackhawks in a regional final at Wheaton Warrenville South. Many of the key players on this year’s Vikings played in that game, in which the Vikings led early in the fourth quarter before fading late in a 45-37 loss.

Ralston said he’s reviewed that game film “about a dozen times” since then.

“To know we made them play the way we wanted to play and we were winning that late in the game, and to just see five possessions change the game, there’s some sting for us in that loss, and I still believe our kids are still hurting from that a little bit,” Ralston said.

“They want their moment where they can relieve that, so what a great opportunity for us to see them again and for it to be a game at an even higher level than last year.”

Geneva is comfortable on East Aurora’s floor after winning the Christmas

tournament there, but plenty of blue in the crowd would be a welcome sight for the Vikings, especially playing in West Aurora’s hometown.

Geneva’s fan support at regionals took a hit both because of the distance to Plainfield and because the Vikings girls basketball team competed at Redbird Arena in Normal this past weekend.

A student fan bus to tonight’s game is planned, and preliminary indications on the enthusiasm scale are encouraging to Ralston.

‘Need for Speed’ is high-powered cliché machine

By ED SYMKUS K_\ NXj_`e^kfe Gfjk Here’s the quick, easy way to tell the difference between the good guy, the bad guy and the innocent guy in this supposed throwback to the fast car movies of the 1970s. The innocent guy is smiling, the good guy is glowering and the bad guy is sneering. You don’t have to think about this very much because before you know it, the film launches into one of its races (it’s the second one; the first one is so uninteresting, it will get no further mention).

All three contestants are driving color-coordinated Koenigseggs that are low and sleek and fast and fancy.

Don’t worry about not being able to pronounce the car’s name; you can’t afford one, anyway.

And don’t worry that I’m going to give away a big plot point: The bad guy cheats; the innocent guy dies; the good guy is framed for it and goes to jail. Two years later, the real story begins. It’s about revenge, or maybe it’s about dealing with old enemies, or finding out if you really can drive from New York to California in 45 hours in order to take part in a secret car race, the location of which the drivers don’t even know until they’re invited by the secretive fellow known only as Monarch.

Right, let’s mention the names of

the players. The good guy is Tobey (Aaron Paul, from “Breaking Bad”), an ace mechanic and hot shot driver who’s just taken over his dead dad’s garage in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. (where, it seems, the old Steve McQueen movie “Bullit” is on the Mt. Kisco Drive-in screen every night). Tobey only drives in small-town races, at night, through alleys and side streets and light traffic, with the assistance of a pal up above in a Cessna who’s watching for cops.

The bad guy is Dino (Dominic Cooper), Tobey’s old high school rival, who has made a pile of dough, and comes back to town after many years, with Tobey’s ex-girlfriend on his arm, and a pricey, one-of-a-kind Mustang (“built by Ford and reimagined by Carroll Shelby) that he wants Tobey and his crew to fix up. The innocent guy is Pete – one of Tobey’s mechanics – but we don’t really get to know him very well before he gets behind the wheel of that Koenigsegg.

The only other pertinent information is that Tobey is behind on his loan for the business, so, despite despising Dino, he takes the job. His mechanics, in the best/worst of cliché style, say, practically in unison, “We’ll do it for Tobey!”

Cut to the finished car, enter the slinky Brit Jules (Imogen Poots), who’s an agent for someone back home who wants to buy the car, stage that deadly

race, see Tobey getting out of jail, and say hello to Monarch (Michael Keaton), a character who’s entire performance happens in one room, behind a microphone, where he blathers on and on about his upcoming underground, illegal race that he’s dubbed the De Leon. It’s a race that will involve only six invited drivers. I’ll bet you already figured out that Tobey and Dino are going to be two of them.

“Need for Speed” tries to catch the flavor of 1970s car-centric films such as the above-mentioned “Bullit” and “Smokey and the Bandit.” But aside from the fact that the driving and the stunts are real, and not CGI, there’s very little resemblance. The film, and all of its performances, except for an over-the-top one from Keaton, are flat and dull. Even the driving-racing sequences aren’t very exciting. The cliché-ridden script keeps getting bogged down by yet more clichés.

There’s some believable camaraderie between the mechanics, but there’s nothing believable about that cross-country trip. And you’ve got to wonder why the film has the Jules character in it. She’s annoying, adds nothing to the story, and while Poots comes across physically as a sort of cross between Rosanna Arquette and Olivia Newton John, she exhibits something like half of their acting ability.

Angioplasty using stents is truly a medical miracle Dear Doctor K: Two friends recently had stents put in. What exactly is a stent? How does it work?

Dear Reader: A stent is a small metal cylinder that opens up a blockage in the arteries. It looks like a miniature chain-link fence rolled into a tube. Stents have helped revolutionize the treatment of the most common form of heart disease, coronary artery disease.

To understand how, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have to take a few steps back.

Coronary artery disease is atherosclerosis of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Atherosclerosis causes cholesterol-filled plaques â&#x20AC;&#x201C; growths in the wall of the artery that block the flow of blood through the artery. Those plaques can cause symptoms like angina (chest pain caused by coronary artery disease). They also can suddenly rupture, causing a clot to form that completely blocks blood flow and causes a heart attack.

Stents are used during a procedure called angioplasty. Angioplasty allows doctors to open narrowed or blocked coronary arteries that could lead to a heart attack.

During angioplasty, a cardiologist uses a needle to guide a plastic

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff tube called a catheter into an artery (usually in the groin). Using X-rays as a guide, and a guide wire, the cardiologist pushes the tip of the catheter through the arteries that lead to the heart.

Once the catheter tip reaches the heart, it is guided into the coronary arteries. Dye squirted through the catheter shows the location and severity of any blockages. Near the tip of the catheter is an inflatable balloon. Once the catheter reaches the narrowed section of blood vessel, the cardiologist inflates the balloon. This pushes the plaque back against the wall of the artery and widens the channel through the artery, allowing more blood to flow through it.

The stent surrounds the catheter, on top of the uninflated balloon. When the balloon is inflated, the stent also expands.

After the procedure is done, the doctor withdraws the catheter and the deflated balloon from the body.

But the expanded stent remains in place, keeping that artery open and blood flowing through it. (Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve

The stent serves as a scaffold to hold the artery open. Most stents are coated with drugs that prevent cells from growing over and around the stent. Such growth occurred with older stents, and that caused a new blockage to occur where the old one had been.

But drug-coated stents can create some problems of their own. The drugs they exude can make it easier for clots to form on the stent. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why anyone with a drug-coated stent must also take blood-thinning drugs.

Researchers are continually trying to improve the design of stents. Stents also are used to open blocked arteries in other parts of the body, such as the kidney. Even 50 years ago, who would have imagined that you could open up a blocked artery deep inside the body without performing surgery?

Today this procedure has become a welcome reality for millions of people.

Concentration can help improve grades Dear Teens: Concentration often is the key to success, yet many find the ability to focus a difficult task. However, you can learn the techniques of concentration if you put your mind to it.

Olympic gold medal winners, performers and scholars have all mastered the art of concentration, says author Jordan E. Cohn.

What is their secret?

Before winning a gold medal, a former Olympic performer was nervous and tense. Instead of pacing the floor and watching her competitors, she turned inward and tuned everything out. She then imagined herself doing the routine flawlessly. The result: She scored a perfect 10.

Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lives, however, are filled with so many diversions that focusing on anything in particular may seem impossible. While you may feel bombarded with distractions, it is possible to learn to concentrate. The first step is getting in the right frame of mind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you learn techniques of concentration, what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really doing is learning how to establish a better environment for yourself emotionally,â&#x20AC;? says sports psychologist Dr. James E. Loehr. In other words, you must be in the mood to concentrate.

Concentration can be affected by a number of factors â&#x20AC;&#x201C; time of day, noise, your mood and even your personality.

Although there are exceptions, studies show that most of us concentrate best from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Therefore, someone accustomed to studying to music may find it difficult to concentrate in silence, Warm adds.

Research also shows that introverts concentrate better than extroverts. Shy, retiring types donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need stimulation from others to get their brains going, which makes it easier for them to sit alone and work.

To maintain your concentration level over long periods, take five-minute breaks each half-hour. If you are working on several different assignments, focus on one at a time.

Developing concentration skills can dramatically improve your grades. Increased concentration may enhance your social life, too; people are attracted to good listeners who focus on what others are saying.

That gives a good hint for today’s deal. South is in six spades. West leads the diamond ace: three, queen, two. West continues with a low diamond, which South ruffs. How should declarer continue? As a secondary issue, what was West’s more successful defense?

North’s sequence, a twoover-one response followed by a jump in spades, showed exactly three-card spade support and game-forcing values. South then used Roman Key Card Blackwood to learn that his partner had two key cards (two aces, or one ace and the spade king) and the spade queen.

After ruffing the second diamond, declarer initially thought he would have to rely on the club finesse. But then, because North’s trumps were so strong, he realized that if spades were 3-2 (mathematically more likely than the club finesse working), he could get home with a dummy reversal.

South played a heart to dummy’s 10, ruffed another diamond, returned to dummy with a trump, ruffed the last diamond, drew trumps and claimed. Declarer took three spades on the board, five hearts, one club and three ruffs in his hand.

West could have defeated the contract if he had shifted to a spade or heart at trick two, which would have killed the timing for the dummy reversal and forced South to take the club finesse.

Afterward, North commented, “I never guessed that my heart 10 would be such a vital card.”
