always try to incorporate a human element in my photos. Even if I’m photographing a building, I try to get a shot of someone walking past or coming and going somehow.

That was the case a couple of weeks ago when our staff began discussing a story on television recycling programs. I had personally disposed of my last tube television last summer. In researching

where to take it, I realized how difficult it would be to find someone recycling such a beast for free.

It was decided that I would go to the St. Charles public works facility, where we knew there would be a lot of televisions and other electronics on site ready for disposal.

The challenge, for me, was to try and get there while residents were unloading

their goods.

After a handful of trips to the facility, with no one to be seen, it finally paid off on the last day possible, as I pulled up and saw Brian Blair and another gentleman unloading their vehicles.

Unlocked cars targeted in Batavia burglaries

asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia police are encouraging residents to lock their cars after a rash of burglaries in a residential area on the city’s northwest side.

Detective Sgt. Shawn Mazza said the department has received eight reports of vehicular burglaries that happened

during the overnight hours between Monday and Tuesday in an area between Western Avenue and Route 31.

Because the burglaries happened on the same night, timeframe and geographical area, they were likely committed by the same person or persons, Mazza said.

Police tend to see an uptick in these crimes when the weather starts to get

warmer, he said. He said a locked car is the easiest defense.

“Every single one of them were from unlocked motor vehicles and targeting anything of value,” Mazza said.

According to police reports, the burglaries happened in the 1700 block of Richter Drive, the 400 block of North

Crowd at hearing opposes apartment proposal

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A crowd of more than 200 residents packed the auditorium at FONA International in the city’s industrial park, with an overflow spreading out into the company’s lunch area.

The company is seeking a zoning change from industrial to a residential and commercial mixed use.

In response to the community’s concerns, Marquette Properties reduced the number of apartments as well as the height and mass of its proposed complex for the former Cetron property on Richards Street.

At a continued Geneva Plan Commission hearing Thursday, Joe Prosapio, vice president of development for Marquette Properties, presented the company’s amended plans.

“We are here to offer revisions based on what we’ve heard in past hearings,” Prosapio said.

Prosapio said the number of apartments was reduced to 202 from 219. It

“The entire project is now less than 60 feet high,” Prosapio said. “We feel this is a great addition to your downtown.”

Plan Commissioner Scott Stocking said the scale still was too much.

“It does not add to the community,” Stocking said.

Residents continued to testify against the proposal, including Dan Morrison of the 100 block of Richards Street.

Morrison said Marquette Properties needs the 200-plus apartments because it transfers the risk to institutional investors.

“When the building fails, they will walk away and leave us with this hulking monstrosity,” Morrison said.

“Don’t let their sales pitch fool you.”

The commission will deliberate and make a recommendation April 14. Officials said they would look for a venue that could hold a larger crowd.

‘Giving kids what they want to eat’ School officials say federal school lunch program offerings weren’t always popular

bschory@shawmedia.com Jaclyn Taylor, an 18-year-old senior at St. Charles North High School, said she usually does not eat lunch at school, but when she does, she gets a sandwich from the deli bar.

“They have all these different options, like the deli bar, hot lunch, pizza, snack bar and salad bar,” she said.

“I like anything I order, but I usually get a sandwich, ham and cheese. It’s pretty good.”

Her friend, fellow 18-year-old senior Emily Taylor – no relation – said she gets the chicken sandwich.

“The chicken is breaded and fried.

It’s the best thing to get,” she said.

“They have combo meals … but they don’t taste very good. The salad bar – it’s decent. It’s definitely better than it was.”

The girls’ choices and assessments follow a decision by St. Charles District 303 to drop participation in the federal school lunch program for this school year. Batavia District 101 also chose to leave the federal program starting with this school year, and officials of both districts say lunch menus now are more varied and healthful.

“We’re seeing a lot more variety and we’re still seeing healthy food choices,” said Seth Chapman, assistant superintendent of business services for District 303. “It’s reflective of feedback directly from our students.”

Geneva School District 304 also does not participate in the federal program, which provides low-cost or free lunches to children. St. Charles and Batavia officials said the districts both still offer free and reduced lunches to students who qualify.

The problem with the federal school lunch program was that foods being offered were not what the students wanted to eat, Chapman said.

“The National School Lunch Program was well-intended, but it had unintended consequences,” Chapman said. “Giving kids what they want to eat – it’s a subjective thing.

Let parents and students make that choice on their own.”

the plate, Chapman said.

In an email, Batavia District 101 Assistant Superintendent for Finance Lindsay Jannotta echoed Chapman’s assessment, that the high

school’s food service program is operating better than it would have had it continued with the federal program.

“Our high school has had a salad bar for some time, but with this

change we were able to expand the offerings on the salad bar,” Jannotta wrote in the email. “We can now offer spinach and romaine lettuce, in addition to the iceberg lettuce we had previously. We were also able to expand the legumes we offer, including garbanzo beans.”

A variety of “Grab ‘N Go” salads also are now available, such as Caesar salad and a chef salad, according to Jannotta’s email.

Batavia’s deli station now offers a variety of breads, including spinach wraps, tomato basil wraps and honey wheat wraps, according to Jannotta’s email.

“We’ve found that our students prefer being able to choose regular pasta over whole wheat pasta, and flour tortillas over whole wheat tortillas, just as they would at home,” Jannotta wrote.

At 28 Brookside Drive in Elgin, you’ll find the wonderful Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, which offers 67 acres of interesting and beautiful woodland habitats filled with a variety of wildlife, two miles of trails, two ponds and a small prairie area.

The nature center building features a Discovery Room with exhibits made by dedicated volunteers, a kids’ “touch table” of nature-related items, taxidermy specimens and a large multi-purpose meeting room.

“We’re not quite where we want to be, but we are pleased with the progress so far,” Chapman said.

Financially, St. Charles lost about $500,000 when it opted out of the federal lunch program, Chapman said.

District officials structured the contract with their food service provider, Aramark, to get a commission on total revenue, Chapman said.

“We expect to finish the year at the high school with a $90,000 surplus,” Chapman said.

That money will be geared to cover the district’s losses from school lunches in the elementary and middle schools, he said. Those schools still are part of the federal program.

Batavia fared better financially, according to Jannotta’s email. Batavia did not lose any money and is making more with its à la carte offerings through its food service provider, Quest Food Management Services.

“Under the National School Lunch Program, our net revenue would have been approximately $11,000, compared to our current revenues of about $22,000,” Jannotta wrote.

End-of-the-year revenue projections for Batavia’s lunch program are $31,000, she wrote.

“It appears that leaving the National School Lunch Program was a good decision that provides students with both healthy food and more options,” Jannotta wrote. “The food service program at BHS is operating better than it would have under the National School Lunch Program. … We’ve also received a lot of positive feedback from high school students regarding the expanded menu offerings.”

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village officials will consider discontinuing the zoning board of appeals, instead expanding the planning commission to a planning and zoning board.

Village President Dave Anderson on Monday noted during a committee of the whole meeting that the zoning board will have a vacancy. He also noted that the board meets infrequently. According to Elburn’s website, www.elburn.il.us, “unless there is a petition for review, there are no regularly scheduled zoning board of appeals meetings.”

“Over the past year, we had two meetings of the zoning board,” Dave Anderson said, adding that “they just don’t meet often enough.”

The planning commission meets the first Tuesday of each month.

Board members were in favor of the move to discontinue a separate zoning board.

Republican and Democratic voters alike will have a choice Tuesday regarding who runs in the Nov. 8 election for the 6th Congressional District.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, faces a primary challenge from Gordon Kinzler, of Glen Ellyn. Democratic candidates Amanda Howland, of Hawthorn Woods, and Robert Marshall, of Burr Ridge, are both seeking the Democratic nomination.

Roskam, a lawyer, is seeking a sixth term representing the district, which includes parts of McHenry, Lake, Cook, Kane and DuPage counties.

He has made a name for himself as chairman of a subcommittee of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee tasked with investigating the apparent targeting of conservative groups for increased IRS scrutiny, and his name was whispered as a possible successor to former speaker John Boehner in the wake of his resignation.

“During the course of my time in Congress, I have a proven track record of legislative accomplishments. I have worked with other members, regard-

Adrift on the hard water Bring up ice fishing at a RIVER TOWN dinner party, and you’ll get a CHRONICLES laugh, especially if you admit to having practiced the sport.

Rick I far from love spending Holinger hours on wind- and snowswept ice, staring at a black hole out of which nothing emerges. However, I know folks who gravitate to augers, tip-ups, hypothermia and black ice slippage.

Like my son. Little did I know when putting a fishing pole in my 6-year-old’s hands 20 years ago on a bright sunny day on a bath-warm blue lake that he’d push me into registering for the DuPage County Forest Preserve District’s 2016 Hard Water Classic Ice Fishing Tournament at Blackwell Forest Preserve.

But there I was, on Valentine’s Day eve, along with about 170 other men, women and children, all looking like space walkers, drilling into eight-inch ice through which we dropped worms, minnows and brightly-colored pieces of metal attached to rod-and-reels designed for Munchkins. All this to catch fish moving slower than those in a box of Mrs. Paul’s.

I didn’t catch anything all afternoon except the northern zephyr. My son, however, pulled in a bass that won third place and a $75 Cabella’s gift certificate.

What did my empty creel win me? A bagful of lures, plastics, drive-thru gift certificates, a T-shirt and rod-andreel combo – when my post-fishing awards-ceremony raffle number was called.

Thank goodness a few members of the Marmion Academy fishing team I help coach were there to share my newly-acquired treasures with. After all, I’ve given up milkshakes; T-shirts highlight my tummy bulge; and the only plastics I fish with are bottles of water.

The event evolved so flawlessly and the raffle drawing so much fun, I wanted to touch base with the person in charge.

Jay Johnson credits his assistant manager, Bob McNeel, who “had the idea years ago for this one-of-a-kind event in the Chicagoland area.”

McNeel says he loves “the large crowds of fishermen on the ice, camaraderie and the competitiveness of the participants. Ice fishermen have such a great passion for the sport, for the outdoors and are a fascinating group of people. I also enjoy seeing how many children and women compete in what’s perceived as a manly event. I also have to give a ton of credit to our FPDDC ranger staff and volunteers.”

“Another thrill of ice fishing,” Johnson adds, “is knowing at any time you can catch that fish of a lifetime. Having the chance to win a $125 gift card from Cabella’s or a gas-powered ice auger adds some extra incentive.

“Finally, Rick, at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, one of our missions is to get people connected to nature, no matter what the weather. The Hard Water Classic is an event where people of all ages and experiences can enjoy the day, even in the middle of winter.”

Laugh all you want about ice fishing, but it may be that you just have cold feet. So buy warmer boots and venture out.

To the Editor: An idiot is defined as someone who tries the same thing over and over again and expects a different result. The GOP is acting like the village idiot. In the presidential election of 2008, the GOP did not completely support the Vietnam veteran and POW, so John McCain lost the election.

In 2012, Mitt Romney was not a Christian, not conservative enough for the GOP rank-andfile and was too wealthy. The GOP again did not completely support Romney, and Obama won re-election.

The GOP is doing it again.

approval by the states – not the Supreme Court – for any amendments. The Constitution does not establish term limits, but the 22nd Amendment sets limits for only the president, not Congress.

The GOP presidential candidates started with 17 individuals, now reduced to four, with two claiming to be more conservative, yet neither one has generated enough of the GOP voters. The leading GOP presidential candidate has received a majority of the GOP voters, even though some of the votes may be cross-over Democrats, yet I don’t think the GOP is going to support him.

So, here we are with a

repeat of the presidential elections of 2008 and 2012.

The GOP cannot figure out what candidate to support to regain the presidency and maintain control of Congress.

The president must deal with both sides of Congress, unlike our current president.

So, if the GOP members continue to act like complete idiots and not completely endorse any GOP candidate, then the next president could be a progressive who does not understand the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Consistency fuels Hawks’ playoff run

After some early-season adjustments, the lineup soon solidified into the group that stands one victory shy of an Illinois Suburban Hockey League Cougar Cup finals championship. The Hawks, who won Tuesday’s best-of-three series opener at Fox Valley Ice Arena, can clinch the title with a win against the DuPage Stars at Darien Sportsplex at 5 p.m. Sunday.

The top line of left wing Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North), center Josh Gadow (St. Charles East) and right wing Jake Hummel (Kaneland) spent most of the regular season jockeying for position atop the league scoring leaderboard. For Gabrielsen, the trio’s success helps illustrate the value of practicing patience in the evaluation process.

Why fix what isn’t broken?

“Three different schools,” Gabrielsen said, “but when we put them together early in the season, everything just comes together.”

The Hawks’ co-op also includes students from Batavia and Geneva. The leading defensive pairing, both in even strength and on the power play, is Geneva’s Brian Bracken and Zack Rittenberg.

Bracken transitioned from goaltender to skater this season.

“It’s new for him, and he’s doing really good,” Rittenberg said. “We’ve just played a lot this year.”

Fox Valley’s defense limited DuPage – a co-op of students from Hinsdale South, Downers Grove South, Downers Grove North and Lisle – after the Stars scored a pair of quick goals to take a second-period lead in Game 1.

Although other defensemen – including Jake Breivik (East), Mikkel Knutson (Batavia), Chris Monroe (Batavia) and Luke Powers (Geneva) – asserted themselves down the stretch, the forwards

The constant in the team’s happy mix is just that, bliss. Gabrielsen, in his second season behind the bench, boasts an extensive hockey background, but has limited history coaching combined teams. He routinely marvels at the way players get along off the ice and adapt to one another’s styles on it.

kdruley@shawmedia.com Trapped aggressively, or so it seemed, St. Charles East boys basketball players routinely navigated Prairie Ridge’s 1-2-2 pressure with pristine ball movement Wednesday.

The sequence repeated like clockwork, helping the Saints earn a spot in tonight’s IHSA Class 4A Rock Valley College Sectional championship against Rockford Auburn, another press-happy bunch.

Saints senior guard James McQuillan and several teammates pondered the early scouting report while decompressing from their latest postseason romp. As usual, East felt ready.

“At every position, we’re very versatile,” McQuillan said. “I mean, no matter who has the ball in their hands, I trust them. I know everybody trusts each other on this team, and that’s what’s important. That’s what’s going to keep us winning.”

McQuillan, a decorated varsity veteran, missed most of December and January with a broken left foot. The Saints (18-12) went 6-7 during his absence, although McQuillan contends part of him never left.

“I try to have a basketball in my hand as much as possible,” he said.

“Around the house, around the gym.

It’s one thing that I could do when I had my broken foot.”

That old axiom about tolerating heat in the kitchen notwithstanding, game tempo didn’t translate to McQuillan’s rehab until he returned to the lineup in a Jan. 30 home win against St. Charles North.

Classmate J.T. Ford’s buzzer-beater won the game as the Saints improved to 11-8. Although East played a touch under .500 for the rest of the regular season, coach Pat Woods still sensed a team yearning to reach its potential.

After all, the injury – one of many East has overcome this season – opened the door for experienced ballhandlers such as senior Evan DiLeonardi to improve that part of their game. Players less seasoned at the skill gained repetitions, too.

“We’ve been working a lot with that, just being strong with the ball,” senior forward Zach Hondlik says. “Meeting passes.”

That was Prairie Ridge’s contention, anyway, as the Wolves worked to hound the Saints only to see a quintet of starters 6-foot-3 or taller whip the ball down the floor.

“They knew coming in what we were doing and prepared for that,” Wolves senior guard Payton Otto said. “What made them different from other teams was they had a lot of poise and a pretty big height advantage. They played amazing and handled our pressure and deserved that win.”

East practiced at Elgin Community College early in the week to get acclimated to the extra room on a 94-foot college court.

As Wednesday’s game transformed into a rout, DiLeonardi, who doubles as a soccer standout, especially enjoyed additional real estate.

“Evan does a really good job of pushing the ball up the floor,” Ford said.

“He’s really good in transition, a very good transition player. I mean, there’s not many guys who can keep up with him. He’s one of the faster players I’ve definitely ever played with. He gets the ball and generally can get through presses by himself sometimes.”

Such a strategy isn’t ideal against Auburn (23-6), which features a vastly different look than the team Geneva edged for the Class 4A DeKalb Sectional championship last season.

The Knights graduated the majority of their core, namely guards Laytwan Porter (Northern Illinois) and Antoine Pittman (Bradley), but have jelled behind an athletic group that includes 6-5 forward Shidaye Evans and 6-0 guard Trayvon Tyler. Both are seniors.

Woods did not plan to bring the Saints back to ECC for Thursday’s practice, favoring a walkthrough at East.

The Saints know their style, and their coaches have scouted that of their opponents.

“It’s a one-day turnaround at this point,” Woods said. “We always try to value the basketball. We always try to limit our turnovers.”

The St. Charles co-op girls lacrosse team returns a majority of its players from last season, fueling big expectations for the program this spring.

St. Charles co-op girls lacrosse coach of River City Lacrosse, which offers everything from beginner programs to high-level travel teams, believes that will change, as well.

“Unfortunately, once you’re a freshman, unless you live in St. Charles, you don’t have a chance yet,” Black said. “We don’t have the numbers here, like we do with the boys, but the numbers are growing. Our girls program is predominantly St. Charles girls because of the St. Charles program, but we do have some Batavia and Geneva girls, so they’ll eventually get there too.”

Batavia athletic director Dave Andrews recognizes the trend, having already brought the boys team fully under the athletics wing this year.

“I’ve had coaches tell me that more and more girls are playing lacrosse,” he said. “We haven’t had any large swell of girls come in yet and request a team.”

Geneva athletic director Jim Kafer said the interest might be limited

because of other options for spring sports, including badminton, soccer, track and softball.

“Maybe that has pulled away some of the girls who might want to play lacrosse,” he said. “That depletes that number. When we started boys volleyball [in 2011], there wasn’t much interest, and then a group came forward; so maybe it’s just going to take some time, or maybe it needs the IHSA to pull the trigger.”

Ohio has sanctioned boys and girls lacrosse beginning with the 2016-17 school year. It appears Illinois may be next.

The IHSA Board of Directors has had numerous discussions about sanctioning the sport, and the board is expected to vote on establishing a start date for a state series in the coming months.

“A board recommendation has not yet been provided,” said Matt Troha, assistant executive director and boys and girls lacrosse administrator for the IHSA. “But in all likelihood, the vote would be to start the state series in the spring of 2017 or 2018.”

Andy Thompson, former boys coach at St. Charles and now an assistant at North, has been coaching in the area for 13 years, so he’s heard about potential sanctioning action on numerous occasions.

“It’s hard to say what’s going to happen,” Thompson said. “For now, we have a nice system in place thanks to a lot of time and effort from everyone involved. It’s a good system, but what-

ever happens, happens as long as it’s the best thing possible for the kids.”

The St. Charles co-op girls lacrosse team has pretty high expectations this spring as it retained most of its roster from last season.

“We lost a few seniors but we also have 16 players returning,” coach Ronni Kluener said. “We’ve got a really powerful senior and junior class, and we’ve got some newer players who have been playing since sixth grade.

We’re looking to make a showing and get St. Charles into the top 10 this year.”

Seniors Katie Cottrell and Emma Haley, and juniors MacKenzie Brown, Liz Masich and Riley Rooney each have been elected captains. All but Brown are students at East.

“We have a pretty perfect situation this year,” Kluener said. “If the girls stay motivated and strong until the end, then we may make it farther than we have ever gone before.”

The program has been accepted as part of the St. Charles schools’ respective athletic departments, which for outsiders may not seem to be a huge deal, but for Kluener is massive.

As the former head coach at Neuqua Valley, she saw plenty of success on the field, but it was a constant battle with the athletic department to use the weight room and other facilities as well as to receive any kind of assistance and support.

That’s not a concern at St. Charles, since lacrosse recently was added into the athletic departments at East and North.

“Being a part of the school is big. I mean, we get to play in the stadium, we get help from the boosters, and people are coming to our games,” Kluener said. “We’re fortunate because there are still a lot of schools who aren’t getting the same kind of support from their schools, and with us, we continue to bump up our numbers and are getting better quality athletes.”

Around the region, high school girls lacrosse opportunities are currently limited to the St. Charles co-op and St. Francis, whose roster includes Chloe Vruno of Geneva.

St. Francis coach Natalie Nesbitt, who also founded and runs the Freedom Lacrosse Club in St. Charles, said she’s seen a number of talented girls in Geneva and Batavia.

“I’ve seen quite a few of them because our club is their only outlet, and it’s during the summer and fall,” she said. “There are some really good players down that way.”

Ready to go the distance?

The boys and girls track and field athletes at today’s Distance Madness indoor meet at the Batavia fieldhouse certainly are, and will compete in the 3,200 meters, 800 and 1,600. Multiple heats are scheduled for each event in the non-scored meet. Event winners will receive a custom Distance Madness ultimate frisbee disc.

The opening heat of the 3,200 kicks things off. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students and children.

In addition to athletes from the Batavia boys and girls programs, the field includes the Geneva and St. Charles North girls as well as the Geneva, Kaneland and Marmion boys. Teams from around the suburbs and other regions of Illinois will join them, including the Yorkville boys and girls and Dwight boys and girls.

Batavia, hailing the sixth season of its sparkling indoor facility, will host the Upstate Eight Conference indoor boys and girls meets on March 18 and 19, respectively.

The longest-standing fieldhouse records for distance events both were set in 2012. Maya Neal of Neuqua Valley (200.68) holds the standard in the 800, while Lake Park’s Kaylee Flanagan set the top 3,200 mark with a clocking of 10:36.4.

The indoor track season concludes with the unofficial “indoor state meet” at the Illinois Prep Times meet, set for March 25 and 26 at Illinois Wesleyan’s Shirk Center in Bloomington.

SPORTS BRIEF Bears football camps coming to Geneva

GENEVA – With support from Chicago Bears alumni heroes such as Anthony Morgan, Mickey Pruitt, Rashad Davis, Kris Haines and Jim Morrissey, Bears Youth Football Camps will visit Geneva Middle School, 1357 Viking Drive, as one of its 25 summer camps in the greater Illinois area.

SUGAR GROVE – Waubonsee Community College student Anna Dutton of Oswego has been named a 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Bronze Scholar.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and

50 Bronze scholars, and by providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each Bronze Scholar receives a $1,000 scholarship and a special medallion.

Carolyn Nagle and Jason Posluszny from the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association received top honors for outstanding professional achievement in the field of parks and recreation from the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association, states a news release.

The Fox Valley Special Recreation Association is celebrating 40 years of providing recreation services to individuals with disabilities. It collaborates with seven park and recreation agencies.

Nagle has been an active leader in the field of parks and recreation for near-

ly 40 years, serving as the executive director of the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association for the past 23 years, states the release. She has cultivated the growth of the agency from serving four member agencies to seven during that period of time.

“I am so honored to have received the Robert Artz Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Nagle in a news release.

“To be recognized for a career that I have loved since I graduated from college is humbling. I am a firm believer that if you love what you do, you will never work a day. I have truly been blessed with the opportunity to work with very special individuals throughout my en-

tire career.”

Posluszny joined the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association team as operations manager in February 2015 after serving as recreation supervisor for the Bloomingdale Park District, states the release.

According to Fox Valley Special Recreation Association Assistant Director Mike Selep, “Jason hit the ground running as he has utilized his energy and passion for FVSRA staff, participants, families and community members to arrange program facilities, oversee transportation services and help out with a variety of FVSRA programs and Fox Valley Special Recreation Foundation

Posluszny said it was an honor to be recognized at the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association conference luncheon in front of family and colleagues.

Counter stress to avoid overeating Dear Dr. K: I eat whenever I’m stressed out – and I always reach for the sweet stuff. Why does stress have this effect on me? How can I fight the urge?

Dear Reader: You’re not alone. Ongoing stress, the hormones it unleashes and the effects of high-fat, sugary “comfort foods” push many people toward overeating.

In the short term, stress can shut down appetite. But if stress persists, it’s a different story. In times of stress, the adrenal glands release a hormone called cortisol that increases appetite. It also may ramp up motivation in general – including the motivation to eat. Once a stressful episode is over, cortisol levels should fall. But if the stress doesn’t go away – or if a person’s stress response gets stuck in the “on” position – cortisol may stay elevated.

Stress also seems to affect food preferences. Numerous studies (many of them in animals) have shown physical or emotional distress increases the intake of food high in fat, sugar or both. High cortisol levels, in combination with high insulin levels, might be responsible.

Other research suggests ghrelin, a “hunger hormone,” might have a role.

Ghrelin is made in the stomach, after it has not been stretched by food for several hours. The hormone travels through the blood to the brain, where it signals you need to eat something.

Once ingested, fat- and sugar-filled foods seem to have a positive feedback effect. They inhibit activity in the parts of the brain that produce and process stress.

In a sense, these foods really are “comfort” foods in that they seem to counteract stress. This might explain why you reach for particular foods when you are feeling stressed. And why I do, too.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff How to fight the urge? The first step is obvious: Get rid of the high-fat, sugary foods in your kitchen. Keeping those foods handy is just inviting trouble.

But it is just as important, if not more so, to counter the stress that causes your cravings. Here are some suggestions: • Meditate. Countless studies show meditation reduces stress. It also may help you become more mindful of food choices. With practice, you may be able to pay better attention to the impulse to grab certain comfort foods and inhibit that impulse.

• Exercise. Low-intensity exercise seems to reduce levels of cortisol, and that should help decrease appetite. Some activities, such as yoga and tai chi, have elements of both exercise and meditation.

• Seek social support. Friends, family and other sources of social support seem to have a buffering effect on the stress people experience. Seek them out when stress starts to build.

I remember a patient who had several co-workers whom she found difficult. She was eating a lot of junk food and gaining weight. I advised her to walk for one hour every morning. She lost 40 pounds during the first year. “It wasn’t that the exercise burned it off,” she said. “The exercise chilled me out. They just didn’t bug me anymore.”

Dr. Wallace: Our health education class would like to hear your answer to our question: Which is the more serious problem among teens, drugs or alcohol consumption? Most of the girls in our class say drugs, and the guys say alcohol. More than 90 percent of high school seniors have had some experience with alcohol and about 66 percent of them drink at least once a month, and half of those will drink enough to become intoxicated.

While the rate of alcohol use among teenagers is holding steady, the age at which they start to drink is going down.

Youngsters often start drinking in middle or even elementary school.
