Itasca middle school principal to lead Kaneland Harter SUGAR GROVE – A middle school principal from Itasca soon will take over the same role at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove.

Kaneland’s school board Monday night unanimously approved the hiring of Brian Faulkner, who currently is the principal at F.E. Peacock Middle School. He will begin his new position on July 1. According to district documents, Faulkner will be paid a salary of $103,900.

Faulkner is a Geneva resident. He said he is familiar with Kaneland. He said his goal is “sustaining what’s been done” at Harter. He called Kaneland “a community and a set of communities” that work to “really, truly educate the whole child.”

The recommendation was presented by Todd Leden, who will take over as Kaneland’s superintendent in July. Leden told board members that Faulkner has been active in the Itasca community. Leden said he stood out from an exceptionally strong field of candidates.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla According to a news release issued by Kaneland, Faulkner directs the parent advisory committee and recently was named DuPage County Principal of the Year.

He has been in the principal role for three years, and in other districts has served in positions, such as assistant principal and dean of students. He also was a health teacher.

Faulkner will replace Bryan Zwemke, who is leaving to become the principal at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia.

While the board’s approval was unanimous, there was some discussion. Board member Tony Valente said he had two questions – why Faulkner had comparatively little teaching experience and how the school performed on testing during Faulkner’s time there.

Leden said Faulkner was

held in such high regard that he was “fast-tracked” into administration, “and he readily accepted that.” As far as test scores, Leden said he didn’t have specifics. Valente said it was important to note the test scores, as “there’s a body of work there to look at.” He said such information needed to be a part of future decisions.

“I think we dropped the ball a little on this,” Valente said.

According to the school’s “report card” posted online, the school had 76 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test in 2013-14. That number was 76 percent in 2012-13 and 78 percent in 2011-12.

Renee Goier, the district’s interim superintendent, said the hiring was done after the creation of a candidate profile “built from multiple stakeholders.” She said if test scores were thought to be a vital part of the decision-making process, that should have been communicated earlier.

Lopatin said he understood Valente’s point that experience is important. But he agreed with Goier that such concerns should be brought in when the candidate profile was being built. Lopatin said if board members believe certain factors are important, they should be included in the process.

“We don’t need to second-guess,” Lopatin said.

“Once that profile is built, we are kind of committed to doing that.”

Cheryl Krauspe, the board’s president, said it was “a time for celebration.”

Goier said there had been “an extraordinary group of candidates.”

Board member Pedro Rivas said he has friends who are familiar with Faulkner’s work, and he said they praised the selection.

“In a nutshell, they said ‘good selection,’ ” Rivas said.

Shadwick King describes last hours with wife to police

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – During the early morning of July 6, Shadwick King said he stayed up and talked with his wife, Kathleen, about her future career plans.

A few hours later, Kathleen King was found dead on part of the railroad t r a c k s l e s s Shadwick King than a half mile from the Kings’ home in the 800 block of Oak Street on Geneva’s east side.

Shadwick King was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in his wife’s death. As his trial continued Tuesday afternoon, prosecutors played three and a half hours of video from July 6 of Geneva police detectives questioning Shadwick King.

During the start of questioning, Shadwick King blew his nose on a tissue and talked about how his wife had begun texting another man.

Shadwick King said his wife did not want to get a divorce and called her a wonderful mother.

“I told her … ‘I’ll do anything for you,’” Shadwick King said on the video played in court Tuesday afternoon.

Shadwick King told the detectives he and his wife lay in bed for about an hour, then she went for a run about 6 a.m. July 6. He said he could not remember what clothes she was wearing except for her pink and black running shoes.

Kathleen King was wearing her pink and black shoes when her body was found, according to police testimony from the first week of the trial.

At a few points during the questioning, Shadwick King’s voice turned into a high pitch and he became emotional.

“There’s no one that would hurt the mother of their children … no one sane,” Shadwick King said to the police in the video.

Toward the end of the video, Shadwick King immediately denied he had a fat lip after Detective Robert Pech asked him about his lip. He allowed police to take pictures of his face, hands and legs and consented to having police look inside of his home before the video ended.

Shadwick King said he never argued with his wife and briefly debated the difference between talking and arguing with police.

The Kings’ oldest son

in court on Tuesday said during a summer 2014 trip that his parents had a verbal fight and that his father, Shadwick King, said the “F word” to his mother, Kathleen King. He swayed in his chair continuously on the witness stand Tuesday as he talked about his parents, at one point mentioning his father threw his mother’s

cellphone in a pond or small lake.

The boy, responding to questions from Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress, said he could not remember the last time he was able to see or talk to his father, Shadwick King.

Pech’s testimony is expected to continue this morning.

WAUBONSEE CELEBRATES Crowds turn out for field house’s grand opening

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Dave Randall on Tuesday afternoon looked across an area featuring three athletic training areas, including one covered in turf and marked for a soccer field. Above the courts, there is a suspended running track.

Those are among the key features of the new Waubonsee Community College Field House, which also offers athletic offices, a fitness and dance studio and more.

The area was decorated with black, red and white balloons, as school officials celebrated the occasion. At the same time, officials rededicated Erickson Hall, the college’s competition facility, which is attached to the field house. The Erickson project included significant renovations.

Randall has been at Waubonsee since 1978, and he is the former baseball coach. He said the improvements will be a big help for athletes and coaches.

The field house will allow more practices, even in inclement weather, and it will provide more opportunities for different sports to train at the same time.

Also, he said it would be an attractive recruiting tool. Asked if he could imagine such a facility when he first started, Randall said he could.

“I imagined it for 20 years,” he said. “It’s really nice to see it slowly work its way to this point. It’s nice to be at this point.”

Brochures touted the other projects that were part of the 2020 plan, including Waubonsee’s Aurora campus, its Plano campus, the student center, the

academic and professional center, the science building and the campus operations building.

As part of the field house project, Erickson Hall underwent renovations, including an athletic team workout room,

improved locker rooms and a remodeled athletic study hall.

The field house provides entirely new amenities.

Waubonsee athletes stood by during the ceremony. Soccer player Haley Kilbride said the

building will be a big help to incoming freshmen.

“We would have had a lot more training,” she said.

Nora Castro, another soccer player, said it especially will improve training opportunities when the sports are out of season.

Randall echoed that, saying it will allow athletes and teams to train throughout the year. He said some community sports groups, such as youth soccer, softball, volleyball, baseball or basketball teams, can rent out the facilities. And it will be an impressive sight for recruits, he said, featuring “a professional look.” He said that could be important.

“If you are recruiting good athletes, it means that a lot of other schools are recruiting them, too,” he said.

BATAVIA – Heroin addiction in the suburbs is a scourge that can only be fought through partnerships and working together, several speakers said Tuesday at an Anti-Heroin Forum.

The forum was hosted by Kane County Coroner Rob Russell and Kane County Sheriff Don Kramer.

“One death is too many,” Kramer said. “It’s a tragedy that does not need to happen.”

Russell said new statistics show the average heroin death is now a non-Hispanic, white person age 18 to 44 who lives in the suburbs.

About 75 people gathered at the Batavia VFW in Batavia to hear about heroin awareness, education and support for recovery from several speakers, including Caroline Kacena, a Naperville mother who lost her son to heroin in July 2012.

Youth Baseball League loses use of McNair Field

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Elburn Youth Baseball no longer will be able to use McNair Field in Blackberry Township after negotiations broke down with the company that owns the land.

However, the township is working with the Kane County Forest Preserve District to develop sports fields on land near McNair Field.

The township had leased the land on Bateman Road for $1 a year for the benefit of Elburn Youth Baseball. It was leased from a company that owns a cellphone tower on the land, and the lease had expired in 2013.

One of the hangups in the negotiations, Blackberry Township Supervisor Fred Dornback said, was the company wanted the township to pay for all of the attorney fees in the event the company had legal concerns about the use of the property.

“Our position was that if there was a disagreement, let a court of competent jurisdiction determine who is liable for the attorney’s

fees,” Dornback said. “And they would not agree to that.”

Dornback said he is trying to get about $70,000 worth of items the league installed on the field, including backstops, returned to the league. In the meantime, the township also is working with the Kane County Forest Preserve District for the construction of sports fields on a portion of the 62.67-acre Westlake parcel, near McNair Field.

The Kane County Forest Preserve District last year bought the land for about $625,000. Funds for the purchase came from the district’s open space referendum, which was approved in 2011.

The township has hired a landscape architect to design the fields, Dornback said.

He said the fields probably wouldn’t be ready until 2017. The fields would serve other groups besides Elburn Youth Baseball, he said.

“The fields could serve more than 1,500 kids,” Dornback said. “It is a big deal for the community.”

Kane State’s Attorney’s Office opposes 2 pending state bills

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office is reaching out to legislators to oppose two bills pending in the Illinois General Assembly.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon on Tuesday spoke about his office’s position against House Bill 172 and House Bill 291 during his monthly media briefing.

HB 291 would require state’s attorneys to appoint a special prosecutor for all police officer-involved felonies, and HB 172 proposes to abolish automatic transfers of juvenile offenders to the regular adult court system for specific crimes, McMahon said.

“I don’t think it reflects the seriousness of the conduct. I just think it’s inappropriate,” McMahon said Tuesday of removing automatic transfers.

By law, offenders charged and convicted as juveniles must be released from juvenile corrections at age 21, McMahon said.

McMahon said there is perhaps room for debate on some offenses, but murder and sexual assaults still should be automatic transfers into the

regular court system. He said legislators he spoke to Monday at the Kane County Board Legislative Breakfast agreed with him, but none of them immediately committed to opposing the bill.

McMahon said he was opposed to the bill mandating use of special prosecutors because there already is a system in place that has been effective to deal with prosecution of police officers.

“I think it’s reactionary, I

think it’s unnecessary,” McMahon said of HB 172.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office can prosecute police officers and has done so in the past, McMahon said. He said all potential conflicts of interests should be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

McMahon’s office is in the process of drafting a letter that will be sent to all Kane County-area legislators to follow up on the proposed bills.

“If we have Narcan, we could keep this from becoming a fatal illness,” Kacena said of heroin addiction. “It’s always going to be chronic and lifelong. You are always in recovery. But it does not have to be fatal.”

Kacena said people with allergies have epi-pens, people with diabetes have insulin.

“Nobody questions their right to life-saving medication,” Kacena said, to thunderous applause. “Truly, it’s the first line of defense.”

Geneva District 304 fires bus driver, sends student to alternative school

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva District 304 school board voted to fire a bus driver and to send a student to an alternative school after a closed session this week.

District spokeswoman Kristy Poteete-Kriegermeier said instead of expulsion, the school decided to place the student in the Regional Safe Schools Program through the 2015-16 school year.

The program serves expulsion-eligible students and students with multiple suspensions, and it is administered through the Kane County Regional Office of Education in cooperation with local school districts.

The program is intended to increase safety and promote the learning environment in schools while meeting the educational needs of disruptive students, according to the Kane County Regional Office of Education website.

“Generally speaking, our practice with all employees is to weigh lots of evidence. We do not hold these types of hearings often. It was something after careful deliberation.”

Craig Collins Assistant superintendent for human resources District officials did not release information about the student, such as the age, school or gender or what offense led to the discipline.

Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Craig Collins said the board voted, 7-0, to accept the administration’s recommendation to discharge the bus driver, Aaron Hamilton, for cause because of performance-related reasons.

Collins said Hamilton had worked for the district as a bus driver since 2005. Hamilton does not have a listed phone number and could not be reached for comment.

According to the district’s

2012-13 employee listings available online, Hamilton earned $32,439.10. When asked if the issues related to Hamilton involved student safety, Collins said, “I can’t go into details.”

School officials began a disciplinary hearing on Hamilton two weeks ago, meeting in closed session for an hour and 45 minutes, before continuing the hearing on Monday, Collins said.

County Board appoints Vazquez’s widow to his unfinished term

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – When Jesse Vazquez’s widow approached Kane County Board member Theresa Barreiro about serving the rest of her husband’s term, Barreiro said she had one thought: “Yes, this is perfect.”

Apparently, the rest of the County Board thought so, too.

Tuesday – nearly two months after his unexpected death – the County Board unanimously backed Chairman Chris Lauzen’s recommendation to appoint Maria Vazquez to the District 8 vacancy.

“No one represents Jesse Vazquez’s mind and heart better than his wife, Maria,” Lauzen said.

Jesse Vazquez, 51, died Jan. 12, the day before the January board meeting. Two moments

of silence were held on his behalf during that meeting, and his colleagues remembered him as a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran who was tightly tied to his district.

Board members described the decision to appoint Maria Vazquez to the vacancy as great and excellent.

“Mr. Chairman, this is an excellent decision,” board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, said. “Maria embodies a lot of what Jesse is.”

After a brief swearing-in ceremony, Maria Vazquez thanked the board for the opportunity to finish her husband’s term, which expires Nov. 30, 2016.

“This is a big day for Jesse,” said Barreiro, D-Aurora.

District 8 covers a portion of Aurora and Montgomery.

Kaneland students attend leadership institute

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – A group of Kaneland High School students recently participated in a leadership program to connect them with more opportunities for their future.

A total of 38 students attended the first day of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, held Feb. 12 to 15 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers in downtown Chicago.

The first day of the institute is focused on high school students and is free of charge, said Rosemary Wisniewski, a mathematics and ESL teacher at Kaneland High School.

Programming on the first day included motivational speaker Raul Magdaleno, a college fair and meeting with actor Wilmer Valderrama, Wisniewski said.

“The whole trip has one big purpose – making sure these students are motivated,” she said.

This was the third year Kaneland students have attended the leadership institute on a trip organized by Wisniewski and Andrew Franklin, one of the school’s guidance counselors.

BATAVIA – The construction of a new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia is moving closer to reality.

Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting recommended approval of plans to subdivide Batavia Plaza. Batavia Enterprises proposes to subdivide Batavia Plaza in preparation for the construction of a new Walgreens drive-thru pharmacy at 122 W. Wilson St. Batavia Enterprises owns Batavia Plaza.

In addition, aldermen recommended approval of variances for the proposed store, including a variance for sign height to allow the current Batavia Plaza sign to be relocated. The full Batavia City Council will vote on the recommendations at its meeting Monday.

“We are close to wrap-

ping this up,” Batavia Enterprises President Dan Stellato told aldermen Tuesday.

Batavia Enterprises wants to move the Walgreens from its current location at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center. Plans are to demolish the former Swanson’s Hardware store/ Prairie Path Cycles store at 122 W. Wilson St. to make way for the project.

Batavia aldermen last year approved a redevelopment agreement for the project. The project is in a tax increment financing district. Under the proposal, Batavia Enterprises would receive $450,000 from the city as the project moves forward, and another $693,000 that would be paid out over 12 years if the project generates enough TIF money to cover it.

Kane County Board cuts $1.5M from sheriff’s budget

GENEVA – The Kane County Board has cut Sheriff Donald Kramer’s budget for the second consecutive month – and the cuts aren’t yet done.

The County Board on Tuesday approved a $1,544,000 budget adjustm e n t i n r esponse to the more than $2 million revenue shortfall Donald Kramer tied to the reduction of federal inmates housed at the jail.

This budget adjustment – which targets such areas as overtime, fuel and vehicle replacements – leaves $500,000 that still needs to be addressed.

Although the topic has generated much discussion during committee meetings, the board approved the $1.5 million in cuts without comment. Members Barb Wojnicki, R-Campton Hills, and Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, cast the only dissenting votes.

At the Executive Committee meeting last week, Lewis called the cuts “impractical” because the funds were budgeted for a reason.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick, who made a brief presentation Tuesday, said a five-year forecast shows the county doesn’t have any cushion to absorb the sheriff’s revenue shortfall.

The loss of the U.S. Marshal’s Service revenue only adds to another challenge facing the county: The potential 50 percent decrease in state income tax revenue proposed in Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget, Onzick has said.

Together, the revenue losses could increase over time, resulting in a nearly $10.4 million projected deficit in 2019, according to information Onzick provided.

The Judicial and Public Safety Committee, which Kramer reports to, is set to meet at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Clinton needs to answer questions about her email THE WASHINGTON POST A paramount test for those running for president is how they make decisions – how they absorb information, what principles they carry and how it is all processed to a final choice.

This is highly subjective, often lost in the hurly-burly of campaigning, but crucial. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is expected to announce her candidacy soon for the Democratic nomination, is at one of those revelatory moments and so far seems not to have recognized it. On Monday, people in her circle suggested she will soon answer questions about her email account. We hope she seizes the opportunity to be forthcoming.

A week has passed since the disclosure Clinton used a private account for all of her email messages while serving as secretary of state, contrary to the administration’s instruction that officials should use government email accounts and contrary to what the State Department – on her watch – was telling its ambassadors and other officials to do. Clinton did not turn in the email records to the government when she left office. Since then, she has given the department 55,000 pages of messages in response to a request, but those were selected by her and her staff, not by government archivists or officials. All of this reveals a cavalier attitude to the public’s legitimate claim on government records.

In the past week, Clinton has said exactly this, in a tweet: “I want the public to see my email. I asked State to release them. They said they will review them for release as soon as possible.”

This perfunctory statement is even less helpful than it sounds. Clinton must know that the State Department will follow the Freedom of Information Act process to release her emails, requiring they be scrutinized for sensitive information and other agencies be consulted – a lengthy process, not likely to result in release any time soon. The tweet also does not address a number of questions Clinton should answer: Why did she use a private account? What discussions did she have with advisers and other State Department or White House officials about it? How many messages, if any, have been omitted from those turned over to the department? Will she permit a neutral arbiter – say, from the National Archives – to examine any withheld messages?

Some have portrayed the email story as a conflict between Clinton and members of Congress who are investigating the attack on a U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, while she was secretary. But this is not primarily about Benghazi. Instead, it is about how Clinton responds to legitimate questions about her judgment and her record; it is about how she would function as president. Dispatching friendly politicians and former aides to TV news shows to dismiss the issue as just politics does not help her cause.

If she wants to demonstrate the strength of character and judgment required to be president, Clinton should hold a news conference and answer all the unanswered questions about her emails.

The Batavia library is requesting $100,000 in TIF financing to improve their property; some issues appear to be design errors. The library property has never been assessed and pays no property taxes.

A TIF district typically is to supply funds in underdeveloped or depressed areas within a specific area. All property tax increases remain within the TIF district but can be used in adjoining TIF districts.

The library already is in its own TIF district, established in 1994. At the time, the Batavia Junior High School was on the property.

The city of Batavia’s desire was to have a developer buy the property and redevelop

the corner for the benefit of downtown. A successful private development never materialized, and then the library bought the property and built the library.

Other than being a library downtown, there has been very little, if any, improvement in Batavia’s downtown.

Taxing bodies, like schools, park districts and even libraries, typically do not collect any increase in property tax revenue until the TIF expires, generally in 23 years.

Increases in tax revenue remain in the TIF district to pay for the bonds, if issued for the district by the city. If the library pays no property tax, how can the $100,000 be repaid to the

city?

TIFs are designed to help improve a specific area, and the businesses within the area are frequently small and medium companies and private entities that receive property taxes from citizens.

They less often include public entities, in my view.

The Batavia City Council has to reject this attempt by the Batavia library to get free money because the $100,000 can never be repaid by the library. The library is going to have to raise the $950,000 the “ole fashioned way” with a referendum.

Playing the second semifinal in the IHSA Class 4A DeKalb Sectional semifinal is just fine with the Geneva boys basketball team.

After a physically and emotionally grueling regional championship triumph against St. Charles East on Friday, the extra day off should benefit the Vikings, who are set to tangle with Rockford Jefferson in tonight’s sectional semifinal.

“We really needed that extra day,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “You play a game like we did on Friday night, and it really was an emotional game for both teams, and then to come out on top, our kids, we told them, we don’t want anything left in your gas tanks. Don’t come back to the locker room and say you had more to give, and I think our kids truly gave everything they had for that game.”

Senior star Nate Navigato certainly did, pouring in 27 second-half points to punctuate a memorable, 31-point performance. Navigato tweaked an ankle in the game, so count him among the Vikings grateful for the four days off leading to the Jefferson matchup.

“Physically, it was a little tougher,” Navigato said. “I had a little bruised up ankle. A lot of players have some [minor] injuries. We just need to ice and take precautions in that area.

Everything’s definitely a little tougher because it’s the playoffs and everyone was giving everything they have because they don’t want their season to end.”

While Geneva’s handling of East’s press was hardly airtight, the Vikings (27-3) made East pay on multiple occasions, an improvement upon the co-Upstate Eight Conference River champions’ two regular season meetings.

game – apparent to anyone who has watched him play for the North Stars – makes his earlier decision to forgo basketball in college to study business at the University of Iowa comparably gut-wrenching to the loss to the Saints.

Callaghan said he decided partway through this season that this would be his last playing basketball, but acknowledged the finality of last week’s 62-55 loss to East prompted him to re-assess, at least a little.

“I really thought about not going to Iowa anymore and playing at one of the colleges that offered me to play basketball there because … I’m going to miss it so much,” said Callaghan, who scored 23 points to go with 10 rebounds in the East loss. “I loved basketball and loved playing for North, but I still say I’m pretty committed to Iowa at this point.

I’d say the chances of me playing basketball are pretty slim, but you never know what the future holds because I just love the game so much, I might just have to come back to it at some point.”

Callaghan has a wellrounded game, high basketball IQ and unquestioned toughness

Ludwig, deciding between Lake Forest College and Roosevelt University for basketball, has difficulty envisioning Callaghan’s competitive basketball days ending.

“He’s the ultimate competitor, most competitive person I’ve ever met,” Ludwig said. “I have a feeling it’s going to be eating at him a lot.”

A linebacker in football, Callaghan also could have played college football but said basketball was the sport he considered more seriously before deciding Iowa presented the most appealing college destination.

Ludwig and Callaghan both participated in the 3-point

shooting competition before Friday’s regional championship game between Geneva and East. Ludwig said “it was just too soon” to stick around for the game, while Callaghan opted to watch what turned out to be a Vikings triumph.

“It was a good game,” Callaghan said. “I couldn’t have put any money on the game because I had no clue who was going to win. It was pretty evenly matched in the weirdest way possible (considering the teams’ differing styles), but it was a great game.”

Grove (Dominican University) and Rosary’s Michaela Ping (Ashland University in Ohio) each made plans to continue playing, according to Club Fusion recruiting coordinator Jim Mohr.

Both are middle hitters, with Ping standing 6--2 and Grove 5-11. Ping is a Batavia resident.

St. Charles North’s boys basketball season ended around 8:30 p.m. March 4 in an emotionally battering regional loss to crosstown foe St. Charles East.

The team’s leaders, seniors Jack Callaghan and Jake Ludwig, still had a basketball in their hands deep into the night.

Callaghan, Ludwig and junior guard Mikey Schroeder remained in North’s gymnasium upon returning to the school after the Geneva Regional semifinal for a proverbial fifth quarter as they leaned on one another to come to terms with the loss.

“After our loss, actually me, Jake and Mikey, we stayed in the gym and shot until around 11,” Callaghan said. “ … I really didn’t want to come home yet. I was pretty upset, and we weren’t ready to leave because it was the last game ever we were going to get to play together, so we sat in the gym and we talked and just kind of reminisced about the season and what great times we had, how it’s been an incredible journey. We just did that for a couple hours after the loss.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com Fox Valley Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen was not sure what kind of team he was going to have coming into this season.

He knew he would have some decent players in Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North), Aaron Karkos (Batavia) and Dillon George (St. Charles East).

“The kids are what really made this an enjoyable season for me,” Gabrielsen said. “If it was not for them, it would have been a rough season for all of us.”

The Hawks finished the regular season 20-5. They finished first in the White Division of the IL Suburban Hockey League.

Gabrielsen was named ISHL Coach of the Year on Tuesday.

The team had the leading goal scorer in the ISHL in Kurtzhals who finished with 24 goals and 14 assists. It also had the league’s assist leader in Josh Gadow (St. Charles East) who finished the year with 15 goals and 23 assists.

They advanced to the second round of the 2015 Blackhawk

The Hawks’ Dillon George finished as league scoring leader.

Cup State, the high school hockey tournament in the Combined Division where they would fall to Waubonsie Valley. The team will lose four seniors but return 11 players next season.

“I had 13 guys this year playing for me,” Gabrielsen said.

“None of them quit. None of them gave up. The coach of the year thing is more a team award than I think than a personal achievement... .It is very humbling to be named coach of the year of course, but it is another way of just getting our name out there and people knowing who we are.”

Another way the team is getting their name out there in local hockey circles is marching Saturday in the St. Charles St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

“Yeah, that will be kind of cool for the kids to do as they will be in their jerseys,” Gabrielsen said. “But this is just part of what our off-season will be

like I hope.”

The team will be exploring how many games and what tournaments they will play next season and what ice slots will be available for the Hawks to play and practice. The team used the Jet Ice Arena in St. Charles, which was small for practices.

“We are hoping to work with Fox Valley Ice Arena next season to get some better ice times,” Gabrielsen said. “I think the rink saw when we had games there, we were able to fill the place.”

While the team is currently set to play in the ISHL in the fall, Gabrielsen is not ruling out the possibility of a chance to be accepted to play in the Illini West Hockey league with Waubonsie Valley, Naperville Central, Neuqua Valley and others.

“I would not rule it out but we have to make sure of certain things such as what will our numbers be like and what kind of ice slots will we get,” Gabrielsen said. “I know the rink has said they do want to work with us, and I think that’s because they saw how successful we were as a club this year.”

Former Giants safety Rolle to visit Bears

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com When free agency got underway Tuesday, there were conflicting reports over where the Bears and former Giants and Cardinals safety Antrel Rolle were at in terms of a contract, but we do know that Rolle is visiting with the Bears.

Rolle’s agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed the visit on Twitter, but emphasized that Rolle did not have an agreement in place with the Bears or any other team at the time.

The 32-year-old former top10 pick has started 80 consecutive regular-season games.

Last season, Rolle started every game for the Giants and

made 87 tackles, nine passes defensed and three interceptions, but he was ranked by Pro Football Focus as 81st among 87 safeties graded.

Rolle is a three-time Pro Bowler, including 2013, when he had six picks and 12 passes defensed. The Bears have a big need at safety, and Rolle could reunite with Ryan Mundy, his teammate in New York in 2013.

On Twitter, Rolle retweeted a congratulatory tweet from former Giants player Carl Banks, who mentioned the Bears. On Monday, Rolle tweeted, “I am just ready to play ball PERIOD. I wish nothing but the best for every free agent on the market. This game is tough.”

Kaneland senior Steven Limbrunner proved the be a dynamic weapon off the bench in Friday’s IHSA Class 3A Burlington Central Regional championship game against Hampshire, scoring 20 points to energize a Kaneland comeback bid that ultimately fell short. Limbrunner, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, “put on a show,” according to Knights coach Brian Johnson. Limbrunner spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about the game. The following is an edited transcript:

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Tuesday morning Jay Cutler was not being shopped for a trade and that the Bears expect him to be the quarterback in 2015.

There was a report from AM-670’s Dan Bernstein on Monday that the Bears were “actively shopping” Cutler, who had 24 turnovers last season and is due $10 million guaranteed for 2016 on the third day of the league year, which is Thursday.

When speaking to the media at the Combine, neither John Fox nor Ryan Pace committed to Cutler as the starter for 2015, making it clear they were going to do their due diligence and continue to get to know Cutler before making a decision.

“We’re going to take the full amount of time to gather information, visit and build a relationship and, hopefully, make the best decision for our organization,” Fox said.

Cutler, who threw a career-high 28 touchdowns last year and completed 66.0 percent of his passes (also a career best), was benched for Jimmy Clausen in Week 16 before returning to the starting role in Week 17 when Clausen – who was re-signed – suffered a concussion.

Learning to control anger will help you avoid heart trouble Dear Doctor K: I have a bad temper. Could my anger trigger a heart attack?

Dear Reader: You’ve seen it in movies: A character shouts in anger – then drops to the floor clutching his chest. But this isn’t just a movie scenario. Research shows that in the two hours after an angry outburst, a person has a slightly higher risk of having heart trouble. By heart trouble, I mean chest pain (angina), a heart attack, or a dangerous heart rhythm that can lead to sudden death. The person also is at higher risk for having a stroke.

How does a surge of anger increase your risk for heart trouble or a stroke? I spoke to my colleague Dr. Murray A. Mittleman, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, about how anger can trigger heart trouble. He explained that anger causes an outpouring of stress hormones. These hormones make your heart beat faster and your blood pressure rise. They also make your blood more likely to clot.

The risk that any particular surge of anger will cause heart trouble or a stroke is small, but it’s real. And it’s much higher in people who have heart disease.

Unfortunately, many people who

About 80 percent of people who have sudden death occurring outside the hospital did not know that they had heart disease.

So, if you know you have heart disease, or risk factors for heart disease, it’s particularly important to avoid situations that might cause you to be angry.

I know that’s easier said than done – but it can be done. Sometimes you need to make decisions that you don’t want to make, such as looking for a new job if it’s making you constantly angry.

You also need to learn how to control your anger. On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a brief questionnaire to help rate your anger level.

To better control your anger, consider an anger management program. Such programs help people tone down their anger, respond to threatening situations less aggressively and use positive behavior strategies. It remains to be proven that anger management can reduce heart trouble and strokes. However, I’ll bet it

does.

Other strategies for keeping anger at bay include the following: • Relax. In the heat of the moment, try to step back and take some deep breaths.

• Reframe your thinking.

When angry, people tend to exaggerate.

• Communicate with care.

During an argument, slow down.

Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and stop to think before responding.

• Change your environment.

When your immediate surroundings trigger rage, move away if possible. Don’t try to get back at whoever or whatever is making you angry. Just walk away.

Medication may also help.

Limited evidence suggests that beta blockers, which slow the heart rate and control blood pressure, may lessen the effect of anger on the heart. And antidepressant drugs known as SSRIs may reduce the frequency of angry outbursts and help you better control your impulses.

Dr. Wallace: I’m an only child and live with my parents. When I asked my mom why she and my dad never celebrate their wedding anniversary she told me that it wasn’t important. And when I asked her where she got married there was a long pause before she said very quietly, “Your father and I were very much in love when you were conceived, and as you know, we still are deeply in love, but at the time we just never thought it was necessary to get married.”

I was so shocked that I couldn’t think of a thing to say so I just said I had homework and I went to my room.

I’m 16 now and I’m shocked to discover that my parents never married and I’m a child of unwed parents. I dearly love both of them, and I know they both love me, and they have been super parents, but now I don’t know what to think about the situation and I’m feeling uneasy about it.

Is there something that I need to know or do now that I know the truth? It makes me feel weird to discover that I could have been conceived in the backseat of a car and that the only reason my parents stayed together without getting married was because they had a child. It makes me feel like they really don’t love each other and it makes me feel guilty.

Even if they got married tomorrow I don’t think this feeling will go away. What can I do?

Antony Beevor, an English historian and author, said: “I believe passionately in pre-emptive pessimism, especially before a book comes out. I expect the worst both from reviewers and sales, and then, with any luck, I may be proved wrong.”

Bridge players these days have pre-emptive optimism. Every chance they get, they open with a pre-empt. But sometimes that tactic backfires.

Today’s deal occurred during a small duplicate. At several tables, North opened three diamonds in the second position, despite the fourcard spade suit. This was always passed out. East typically led a heart, and the defenders took two hearts, two diamonds and one or two spades.

When North passed, the auction went as given. North was not sure what to do over West’s two-heart response, but he knew his hand had great potential for play in spades.

East wondered about bidding five hearts, but remembered that his partner was a passed hand. (Five hearts could have been defeated by four tricks, North-South taking one spade, one diamond, one diamond ruff, two clubs and one club ruff.) If West had led a heart, the defenders could have forced declarer to guess trumps. But a club lead was normal.

South immediately discarded both of dummy’s heart losers, ruffed a heart in the dummy, and ran the spade nine, the percentage play for one loser. When that pulled out the ace, the spade suit split 2-2, and diamonds were 3-2, declarer brought home 12 tricks for a top.

In the second seat, you should have a textbook hand for a pre-empt because you are already past one opponent and are more likely than usual to be making life tough for your partner.
