s temperatures continue to rise and fall, motorists in the Tri-City area are encountering another hazard – potholes.

Potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of ground water after the water has entered into the ground under the pavement. Local officials are warning that more potholes could open up in the coming days.

“There’s been such a deep freeze that it is going to take a little while to thaw out,” Geneva communications coordinator Kevin Stahr said.

“That could lead to prime conditions for more potholes to occur.”

With the area experiencing a significant amount of snow and cold this winter season, the pothole problem has been worse than last year, he said.

Geneva public works crews have been taking advantage of the recent warmer temperatures to patch as many potholes as they can, Stahr said.

“There hasn’t been a premium number of days to fill potholes given the snow and freezing temperatures,” Stahr said. “The snow plows have a tendency to dig up new patches, and the patches do not sit well in freezing conditions.”

Some of the roads in Geneva with the most potholes are state routes such as Route 38, Route 31 and Route 25. Stahr said the city is responsible for filling potholes on those roads.

More permanent patching might have to be done on certain streets later in the year, he said.

“We definitely will be doing more permanent patching where there are clusters of potholes,” Stahr said. “Our goal is to make commutes smoother for our residents and visitors to Geneva.”

Geneva is not alone in having to deal with potholes.

Chris Adesso, the St. Charles public services manager, said “the potholes here in St. Charles are very consistent with what we have seen in years past when experiencing the type of severe weather conditions that this winter has brought on.”

“The St. Charles Public Works Department has been working throughout the winter to fill potholes with a blend of cold mix asphalt, and we are continuing efforts to patch as many potholes as possible on a daily basis,”

Adesso said.

The patches are temporary, he said. And some of the streets might have to be resurfaced.

“They will need to be replaced with more permanent repairs, utilizing hot mix asphalt when weather conditions permit this type of work,” Adesso said. “The Public Works Department is taking into consideration roads that have a seriously deteriorated surface due to the conditions this winter and will utilize the information collected while planning to make more permanent re-

To protect vehicles from pothole damage, the AAA Motor Club recommended that motorists inspect their tires before they drive to make they are properly inflated as well as to avoid puddles of water that can disguise a deep pothole.

Steve Oke, manager of the Batavia Avenue Mobil, said his station has seen more vehicles this winter with pothole damage – such as blown out tires – than the previous one.

“Sometimes we have to replace the rim as well as the tire,” he said.

He had some advice for motorists driving on Route 31, which he said is in particularly poor condition because of potholes.

“Stay in the middle lanes if possible,” Oke said. “The outer lanes seem to be worse.”

ST. CHARLES – Combustible materials left on a stove sparked a fire that caused an estimated $150,000 in damage early Sunday morning to a home at 1723 Howard St., according to a news release issued by the St. Charles Fire Department.

According to fire officials, food packaging materials were left on the stove. No one was injured in the fire.

All five occupants were able to escape safely, according to the release. One of the residents called 911 upon

leaving the house.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 4:37 a.m. and found a fire in the kitchen. The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes, and firefighters were successful in stopping the fire before it spread to the rest of the house.

Damage is estimated at $100,000 to the house and $50,000 to its contents. St. Charles firefighters were assisted by Batavia, Geneva and South Elgin fire departments.

The Elburn Fire Department provided coverage while St. Charles firefighters were fighting the fire.

At age 95, Geneva resident not ready to retire from job at Silvestri Sweets Saturday, March 15th at 2:00pm

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva resident Marie Cavaliere recently turned 95 years old, and she has no intention of retiring from her job at Silvestri Sweets in Geneva any time soon.

“I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t work,” Cavaliere said Sunday, surrounded by family members and co-workers who threw her a surprise birthday party at Aurelio’s Pizza in Geneva. “It’s a wonderful place to work. I have a wonderful boss.”

Cavaliere, who turned 95 on March 4, has been working at Silvestri Sweets since the early 1980s, when it was headquartered in Cicero. When the company moved to Geneva several years ago, Cavaliere moved as well.

She still works 40 hours a week running the company’s outlet store.

“They broke the mold when they made her,” Silvestri President Andy Silvestri said.

“Even if it is snowing or raining out, she will walk to work.

She’s really spunky.”

Her co-workers affectionately call her “Gram,” and she is known throughout the community as “The Candy Lady.”

“She packages candy beautifully,” she said. “There is an art to tying a bow on a package, and she can do it.”

Her family members said they also know how special she is.

“She’s a great example to all of us,” said Dominick Cavaliere of Elgin, in talking about his aunt. “She used to ride her bike to work and to church because she never had a driver’s license. She doesn’t complain, and she’s sharp as a whip.

She’s the most inspirational woman you would ever want to meet.”

With the March 18 primary race a week away, Rauner, a businessman, promised to return both Illinois and the state’s Republican Party to its former greatness.

GENEVA – Kane County Animal Control will be seeking the public’s assistance with moving animals impounded from a traveling petting zoo from a farm on Route 20 in Hampshire Township to an undisclosed location in Kane County, police said in a statement.

That investigation resulted in the discovery of several deceased animals and several ill animals and inhumane conditions for the animals to be living in, police said.

The owner of the animals was arrested. The property owner told animal control that he wants all the remaining animals removed from the property, Kane County Animal Control Administrator Rob Sauceda said.

The animals must all be removed by the end of the day today, Sauceda said. Kane County Animal control is not equipped with the necessary equipment to move the remaining animals from the property, because there are several horses, alpacas and llamas that need to be put on trailers to be relocated.

Teenager charged with selling drugs

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A Batavia teenager has been charged with a Class 2 felony for reportedly selling prescription drugs to other high school students, according to a St. Charles Police Department report.

At about 5:20 p.m. Thursday, St. Charles police responded to a business in the 1300 block of East Main Street for a report of high school students selling prescription drugs to each other, police said.

Police were advised that a Geneva High School administrator was present, police said.

The dean reportedly told police he conducted an investigation at his school regarding drugs and drug dealing earlier that day. A student alerted him to the drug deal in St. Charles, police reported.

Courtney Lynn Horan, 18, of the 1000 block of Pueb-

lo Drive, Batavia, reportedly sold three pills for $10. A pharmacist confirmed the pills were a generic formula of Adderall, a Schedule II controlled substance, police reported.

She was placed under arrest after telling police she wouldn’t answer questions without an attorney present, police reported.

Horan was charged with unlawful deCourtney livery of a Lynn Horan controlled substance and is expected at the Kane County Judicial Center for a status hearing on March 27.

Police said a juvenile also was involved in the incident.

The juvenile must complete 20 hours of community service, follow all the rules regarding school and curfew and have no contact with Horan for a set amount of time, police said.

Police on Thursday responded to Target, 3885 E. Main St., at about 12:45 p.m. after a woman reported seeing a man performing a sexual act in a parked car near a shopping cart return area, police said.

The man – identified as Jeffrey Alan Poindexter, of the 800 block of West St. John Place, Palatine – reportedly told police he plays piano at a St. Charles establishment Thursday afternoons. He reportedly told police he “had time to kill” after getting

“He wasn’t doing it for the thrill and was not trying to get women to see him,” police reported Poindexter as saying.

Police noted Poindexter could not answer why he didn’t go to a more isolated Jeffrey Alan area.

Poindexter Poindexter was released on his own recognizance and is expected at the Kane County Branch Court in St. Charles on March 27.

Police described him as “upset” and “extremely embarrassed” and reported he insisted it was an isolated incident.

Police were called to the Filling Station, 300 W. Main St., St. Charles, at about 12:40 a.m. for a report of a fight.

Multiple people were in the north parking lot when police arrived, and the offender – later identified as Michael Phillip Hayes – left on foot on Cedar Street, police reported.

Committee backs Aldermen split over leaf, outdoor seating brush collection contract at Spotted Fox

The city’s Planning and Development committee voted 7-1 in favor of recommending a minor change to the preliminary plan for Main Street Commons to allow a patio area at the Spotted Fox Ale House at 3615 E. Main St. Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Martin voted against the recommendation.

Spotted Fox owner Marwan Taib was at the Monday meeting. He was relieved to hear the committee’s vote and excited to move forward with construction, pending final approval from the St. Charles City Council.

“We’re going to build the best patio that this area has ever seen,” Taib said after the meeting.

The outdoor dining area will have a capacity of 125 people and be built on the north side of the restaurant, Taib

said. The area will be adjacent to and overlook the detention basin between the restaurant and Main Street.

Taib plans to install a water fountain in the basin, TVs on the patio and possibly an outdoor grill for the chef to use.

Since the proposed patio area is partially located over an underground utility easement, city staff recommended in its report that a section of the patio be constructed on a concrete slab with joints to allow for easy removal if necessary.

Taib hopes to have the patio open by the first week of May, weather permitting.

The Spotted Fox Ale House first opened in 2012. Taib said his business had to persevere during its first year and a half without a patio and also in the middle of Route 64 reconstruction.

“This is going to be huge for us,” Taib said of the patio.

The proposed change for the outdoor dining area is up for final approval at the St. Charles City Council meeting March 17.

GENEVA – Aldermen acting as the Committee of the Whole recommended approval of a new five-year contract for brush and leaf collection in a 7-3 split vote Monday, ensuring that it will come up for discussion when the City Council takes final action March 17.

At issue was Kramer Tree Specialists Inc., of West Chicago, receiving a no-bid five-year $1.9 million contract. First Ward Alderman Charles Brown, 2nd Ward Alderman Don Cummings and 4th Ward Alderman Ron Singer all voted against the recommendation.

Public Works Superintendent Daniel Dinges said

when the work was bid out in the past, the only one received was for Kramer. The brush contract will expire in 2015 and the leaf contract expires this year, he said.

“We’ve had Kramer Tree Service for brush since 2007 and leaves since 2010, and they’ve done a very good job,” Dinges said. “With the five-year contracts, there is a 2 percent increase over those years. Fuel prices have gone up substantially and insurance costs have gone up.”

In order to keep the price down, Dinges said the brush pickup will go from two a month to one, keeping the leaf pickup at twice a month in the fall.

Cummings and Brown said their misgivings con-

cerned the contract not being bid out.

“A five-year, no-bid contract is locking in a pretty healthy rate of increase for them,” Brown said.

Dinges said no other company responded to their bids in the past.

“We’re working with Batavia and St. Charles [and] they are in the same boat, they use Kramer,” Dinges said. “We bid it a couple times now, and we’ve only gotten one. I have talked to other contractors, but they are not geared up with equipment to do that.”

And as to the contract being five years, Dinges said if Kramer is going to make a commitment on buying necessary equipment, they want a five-year contract.

The apartment bedroom in Batavia was “almost completely burned out” when a fire began early afternoon, Batavia Fire Chief Randy Deicke said.

The fire caused an estimated $25,000 in damage.

A child playing with a lighter set a bed on fire, fire officials said.

The Batavia Fire Department – along with units from Elburn, Geneva, St. Charles and North Aurora – responded to the Green Meadows apartment complex across from Batavia High School at about 1 p.m., temporarily reducing traffic on West Wilson Street to one lane.

Tony Molina, who lives in the apartment adjacent to the one affected, said his family could hear the sirens before they had a chance to call 911.

ticed the fire, he said, explaining she smelled the smoke as she was getting ready for a shower.

“I’m just glad that the kids are OK,” Molina said of his neighbors.

Deicke said at the scene that the fire was under investigation and noted smoke detectors were activated.

A family with children lives in the apartment, Deicke said, adding the family was home at the time it started. Alerted by a child about smoke, a parent first tried to use a fire extinguisher but called 911 after the situation worsened, Deicke said.

The fire was contained to the bedroom, and it appeared that neighboring apartments were unharmed, Deicke said.

Nobody required medical treatment, he said.

Weakening the SAT The WASHINGTON POST It’s the news that will launch a thousand test-preparation courses: The College Board is once again altering the SAT, the much-criticized college admissions exam that has struggled to defend its approach to student assessment. The SAT’s writers appear to be doing two things: changing what it tests; and making it easier. There’s reason for the former, and danger in the latter.

The SAT has had a rough several years, as critics have continued to charge that performance on the exam doesn’t predict college performance well, or much better than students’ socio-economic status does.

Worse from the College Board’s perspective, no doubt, is that the SAT is now a less popular college entrance exam than the ACT, which used to be common in the center of the country and very rare on the West Coast and in the Northeast.

So the College Board is conducting its second revamp in a decade. The writing section, which didn’t test many of the qualities of good argumentation, such as accuracy and correct use of source materials, will be optional, not mandatory. The exam will no longer expect students to know difficult, lesser-used vocabulary words. Advanced mathematical concepts will disappear from the exam, and it sounds as though some math sections will force students to do more raw computation in their heads rather than on calculators. The penalty for random guessing will also go.

The general idea, the SAT’s designers say, is to move the exam closer to what students actually learn in high school, rather than testing a set of skills that they and colleges might find less relevant. It’s no accident that this push comes

from a College Board president who helped produce the K-12 Common Core standards, which aim to establish a national grade-school curriculum.

Integrating the SAT with what’s taught in class is a fine idea, particularly since the exam’s writers gave up on their claim to measure raw aptitude years ago. But making the exam easier in order to chase the ACT isn’t. It sounds as though students could conceivably get a perfect score on the new exam and yet struggle to fully comprehend some of the articles in this newspaper.

Colleges should want to know if their would-be English majors are conversant in words more challenging than “synthesis,” or that their scores reflect more than lucky bubble guesses, now that wrong answers carry no penalty.

The SAT’s fiercest critics claim the test is practically useless, reflecting little more than students’ socio-economic status. Grades alone are better predictors of college success, they argue. But grades can be misleading, too, since their value depends on the particular expectations of individual schools and even individual teachers. Colleges are right to want a common assessment in the mix as they evaluate applicants, including top inner-city students who might have spotless transcripts but few other ways to demonstrate that they’ve achieved as much as or more than other applicants at schools with better reputations.

No standardized test will be close to perfect. But a better approach would include a rigorous exam, or set of exams, linked tightly to the content and skills students claim to have learned, a system more akin to the Advanced Placement program than to the old SAT. From the sound of it, the new SAT won’t be that.

Steve has been a close friend for 16 years, and I know him to be forthright, honest, intelligent, thoughtful, persuasive and effective. His professional career is built around working with communities to maximize their economic vitality and success. Myriad public

officials with which he has worked have lined up behind Steve, not because of politics, but because he brings a rare and valuable insight and thoughtfulness to his work.

He was elected twice and has served diligently on Geneva’s library board. With Steve as treasurer of that body, he – along with the rest of the board – was the only area taxing body to actually lower their tax burden while maintaining public services.

Regardless of one’s political stripe, we are all aware of the political dysfunction which taints our legislative bodies.

Steve Andersson is part of the solution. I encourage everyone to participate in the GOP primary election this March 18 and help elect Steve Andersson to the Illinois House of Representatives to help get Illinois back on track.

Marmion’s Johnny Jimenez, the 2014 Kane County Chronicle Wrestler of the Year, won his fourth consecutive state title after defeating Glenbard North’s Jon Marmoleo in the IHSA Class 3A 126-pound title match. he began his career with a 103-pound title in 2010-11 and moved up a weight class each season.

A proud alumnus of St. Charles-based SCN Youth Wrestling who will compete collegiately at Wisconsin, Jimenez has returned to the facility more regularly in recent seasons and calls it “heartwarming” to see athletes enjoy success.

One of them, an 8-yearold, recently won an IKWF Bantam title.

“You know, someone that young wanting to achieve their goals that bad, it means so much,” Jimenez said.

About the only pedestal Jimenez was unable to reach in his career was the top of the dual team state podium.

Marmion qualified in each of the past two seasons before finishing second and third, respectively.

Individually, Jimenez knew that champion’s perch throughout his 166-10 career.

He is one of only 14 wrestlers

in IHSA history to win a state title in all four tries.

That number grew by three members this season, with 132-pounders Jered Cortez of Glenbard North (3A) and Josh Alber of Dakota (1A) following Jimenez into the club moments after he brought the State Farm Center crowd to its feet.

Alber completed a perfect career run (182-0) and was the only in-state opponent to defeat Jimenez the past two seasons. Their most

recent encounter: Alber’s 5-3 overtime victory in the Dvorak tournament finals in December.

“I’m good friends with Johnny,” Alber said. “He was one of my two toughest matches. Other than that, I was pretty dominant.”

Long known as an expert technical wrestler, Jimenez worked with second-year Cadets coach Ryan Cumbee to add physical toughness to augment his mental game.

“Johnny was ready to wrestle every match. No questions asked,” Cumbee said. “He’s always been an example for the other guys in the room.”

Jimenez simplified things in his final state series in a bid to move his career pursuits to the back of his mind.

Easier said than done. Every opponent to shake hands with Jimenez in Champaign knew what an upset win potentially could do, and how it might impact the state wrestling scene.

Ultimately, Jimenez avoided any danger by harnessing an approach he could just as easily repeat to his champions in waiting.

“Winning one period at a time. Staying really relaxed,” Jimenez said. “Getting those takedowns, and not getting too amped up in that first period.”

“It’s kind of like, ‘I did it. I did everything I dreamt of.’ And, you know, I just feel like I’m really giving back to a lot of kids that also have dreams.”

lenbard East senior wrestler Dayton Olson improved his standing against Marmion’s Johnny Jimenez this season, yet still found himself a casualty of the Cadet’s climb to four career state championships.

Lamenting his last chance to defeat Jimenez after a Class 3A quarterfinal at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center last month, Olson ended with a premonition: “The hardest person Johnny’s going to have is Marmoleo,” he said, “and I think he can beat Marmoleo.”

Jimenez already had defeated Glenbard North’s Jon Marmoleo this season, so a 5-1 victory in the 126-pound title bout the next night was no surprise. More unexpected was Jimenez’s post-match demeanor. The St. Charles resident and three-time Kane County Chronicle Wrestler of the Year dug deeper than usual, to be sure.

“It’s kind of like, ‘I did it. I did everything I dreamt of.’ And, you know, I just feel like I’m really giving back to a lot of kids that also have dreams,” Jimenez said.

“Younger wrestlers that want to accomplish their goals, who might look up to me. I feel that I’ve really given back to the sport and just appreciate everyone.”

Waubonsee’s Wagner closes career: Longtime Waubonsee

College women’s basketball coach Dana Wagner ended her career with Saturday’s 79-53 loss to Kishwaukee College in a NCAA Division II Region IV final at Elgin Community College.

A Kaneland product, Wagner guided the Chiefs for 15 seasons on the heels of a standout playing career at Aurora University. She plans to remain at the school as an assistant athletic manager.

Chiefs sophomore Ashley Wilk, an Aurora Central Catholic product, led Waubonsee (25-7) with 15 points Saturday.

The Chiefs’ roster also included freshman guards Sarah Grams and Brooke Harner of Kaneland and Aurora Christian graduate Emily Magee, a sophomore guard.

A Freshman at Geneva, Ginsberg helped the team qualify and place fifth at the IHSA State Finals Meet.

Ginsberg was the 2014 Conference, Sectional and State all-around champion. She broke the 2006 all-around school record with 38.05, as well as the beam and floor school records, both with a 9.7.

Frazier had 22 points and 15 rebounds in the Regional Championship game against Willowbrook. In the Sectional Semifinal game against Downers Grove North, she had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and she had the game-winning bucket with a three-point play.

Jack Callaghan St. Charles North Basketball Callaghan was one of the top rebounders and top three-point shooters for a North team that finished tied for second place in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division.

Kyle Kumerow South Elgin Indoor Track Kumerow is a leader on the team. He set a new school record in the high jump on Saturday, February 22. Kumerow is 6’2” and won the triple jump at the St. Charles North early bird meet.

Scull is a junior distance runner for the Girls STCE Cross Country and Track Team. She placed 18th at the IHSA Cross Country Finals in the fall and has already posted a state qualifying time in the 1600 meter race this spring.

Carlson averaged 17.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the month of February. He also shot 80 percent from the free throw line, while leading the Knights to a 6-3 record for the month and the NBXII Conference Championship.

St. Charles North sophomore Daley Krage feels she differentiates herself on the volleyball court simply by being different. Or versatile, anyway.

“I think I have height, but I’m also a good six-rotation player and am comfortable playing back row, too,” she said. “I have basically played every position, so I’ve become pretty good with court knowledge and being really aware.”

A 6-foot-3 outside hitter, Krage has two more seasons to heighten her skills before competing for Northwestern, where she verbally committed Friday after overtures from most of the rest of the Big Ten. jschwab@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – If the Kaneland boys basketball team’s postseason run comes to a close this week, a lack of gumption in the clutch is unlikely to be the culprit.

The senior-driven Knights have hit as many memorable, clutch shots as any team in the area this season, most recently point guard Drew David’s buzzer-beater in Friday’s regional final to upend Marmion, 62-60.

The Knights head to tonight’s IHSA Class 3A Hampshire Sectional semifinal against Rockford Lutheran with plenty of late-game bravado on their side.

“I always like being the guy people can look to and just know, that guy doesn’t want to back down – he’s the guy that wants to take the shot,” said David, a four-year varsity starter. “At the same time, I realize that, as Michael Jordan always says, he’s also missed like 30 game-winners or something like that. Being the guy that wants to take the shots, you have to at the same time take the credit for losing some of those games, too. I just kind of shoot it, hope it goes in, and I just try to win games for our team.”

Kaneland coach Brian Johnson has seen his share of goosebump-worthy endings in his six seasons with the Knights, but called Friday’s victory in Maple Park the most thrilling. David’s long two-point shot at the buzzer – off an assist from his younger brother, Ryan – broke a tie and shipped the top-seeded Knights to sectionals.

Johnson said the Knights have pulled out the closely contested games more often than not, crediting a veteran core led by seniors Ty Carlson, John Pruett and David.

“For the most part, I think we’re battle-tested in close games,” Johnson said. “Early on you’d like to not have games that you’ve got to worry about trying to win at the end, but I think in the long run, it’s helped us out.”

“Drew’s very instinctive,” Johnson said. “That end-ofthe-game shot against Marmion, we don’t call a timeout, we let them play, and Drew comes up big and hits the shot.”

While David’s glorious jumper is fresh in Kaneland fans’ minds, Carlson might be the area’s unofficial leader in clutch shots this season.

Among the highlights on his personal, season DVD: last-minute 3-pointers to tie games against Geneva (at the United Center) and Yorkville, and a buzzer-beating basket to beat Morris, 42-41, in January.

Carlson said he loves the opportunity to drill a game-deciding shot but echoed his coach’s philosophy in emphasizing the importance of the more subtle moments that allow the Knights to thrive in close games.

In the Marmion game, Carlson highlighted a charge taken by Ryan David and the Knights winning battles for a

couple 50-50 balls as critical moments.

“It just goes to show with close games, coach Johnson always talks about the little things take care of the big things,” Carlson said. “So when we do the little things right, it always leads to making big things happen.”

In facing Rockford Lutheran tonight, Kaneland must contend with 2,000-plus point career scorer Thomas Kopelman, whom Johnson compared to another star Kaneland has faced this season, West Chicago’s John Konchar.

“He plays the 1, the 2, the 3 – I mean, he’s all over the place for them,” Johnson said of Kopelman, a Minnesota State recruit. “He’s about 6-3. He’s a dead-eye shooter, he penetrates really well, he passes very well, so he’s kind of a do-it-all for them.”

The Crusaders also are comfortable in tense games, having survived an overtime regional final Friday against Belvidere, winning 71-67.

If it’s another tight one tonight, that’s OK by David, who has had time to regroup after an emotionally draining celebration Friday.

“It was kind of weird, it was really surreal, kind of like a dream,” David said. “I mean, just getting mobbed by everyone and just getting hugs from people just randomly. Once everything just kind of cooled down a little bit, I didn’t realize how tired I really was at the end of the night. I was just like ‘Wow.’ ”

Glenbard North will not fill the Upstate Eight Conference’s future void.

Glenbard North athletic director Matt Bowser confirmed Monday the school informed the Upstate Eight and DuPage Valley conferences last week that it will remain part of the DVC at least through the 201516 school year.

Glenbard North officials listened to the UEC’s overtures in recent weeks but decided to remain in the DVC despite some concerns about the conference’s changing makeup, with large schools Metea Valley, Waubonsie Valley and Neuqua Valley hopping from the UEC to the DVC, effective the 2015-16 school year.

Bowser said he and principal John Mensik discussed the possibilities with coaches at the school, but deliberations did not reach the school board level.

Adding Glenbard North would have been a welcome solution for the UEC, both because of the strength of the Panthers’ athletic programs and because the UEC would love to restore an even number of members.

The UEC stands at 14 schools now, will move to 16 for the 2014-15 school year as West Aurora and Glenbard East come aboard, but then decline to 13 schools after the Indian Prairie district schools switch to the DVC in 2015-16.

Paul Pennington, Elgin athletic director and acting president of the UEC, said the conference is preparing

to operate as a 13-team league if no alternatives to Glenbard North materialize.

“We’ve been meeting to determine scheduling either with 14, 16 or 13 schools, depending on how it played out, so there is preparation moving forward regardless of [Glenbard North’s decision],” Pennington said. “We’re prepared to move forward with 13 schools.”

The UEC is divided into the River and Valley divisions, currently with seven schools apiece. Lacking balance between divisions would be tricky but not unworkable, Pennington said.

“In terms of scheduling, you can make 13 work,” Pennington said. “That’s certainly better than six schools in a conference. It’s complex depending on what sport you’re taking about but it can be [done]. It’s just being flexible in rotating with other schools and other conferences, possibly.”

Bowser, meanwhile, said the UEC represented a strong option for Glenbard North but said the DVC remains the school’s best fit for the time being.

“It’s been challenging for the DuPage Valley Conference and the Upstate Eight Conference in the last several years with the conference alignment and schools changing conferences,” Bowser said. “I think everyone is looking for stability, and I think that the more that everyone communicates, like we have done, the better off we will be as conferences and really as an area with our athletics.”

He took the net and tossed it to his team, which celebrated its first sectional title that secured a trip to Tuesday’s NIU Supersectional against Lanark Eastland.

“We keep talking about the number of games that we have left,” Ahrens said. “Going into [Saturday], we had four left.

Now it’s three. We’ve got to get to work now, getting ready for Tuesday. Eastland’s a very good team.”

Makur Puou’s inside scoring was one of the keys to the win, as the Ramblers (26-5) avenged last season’s sectional semifinal loss to the Tigers.

He finished with a gamehigh 25 points, including 17 in the second half.

Mangisto Deng added 16 points for Mooseheart, which led, 16-2, after one quarter amid the Tigers’ attempts to slow the game down.

An early deficit against Quincy Notre Dame swelled to 21 points by halftime, threatening to rattle the Rockets in the program’s first state finals berth.

“It’s been awhile since we’ve [been] down by that much. I don’t think we ever have,” BC junior forward Alison Colby said. “The team stuck together and we came back out and I think we looked a little better. We finished as a team, so that’s something to be proud of.”

Make no mistake, Central wants to start the dialogue with its 64-40 loss to the Raiders. Four sophomores flanked Colby in the starting lineup for a team that is 54-11 in two seasons under coach Mark Smith and delivered the best finish in school history, girls or boys.

Anticipating anything other than a return to Illinois State’s Redbird Arena next March isn’t in the cards.

“This year, we were happy to be down here,” sophomore forward Sam Pryor said, “and next year, we’re going to be ready to win it.”

Central (28-6) struggled with QND’s pressure

from the outset, with open space consistently in short supply. The Rockets went scoreless until Pryor drilled a 3 with 4:39 left in the first quarter.

That shot brought Central within a point, but hardly made the Raiders (30-4) sweat. They closed the quarter on an 18-3 run and led by as many as 26 points early in the third quarter.

QND shot 25 for 56 (44.6 percent) as guard Kristen Gengenbacher (22 points) and forward Mary Beth Hugenberg (19) starred.

“We came out in this game with a lot less pressure on us,” Gengenbacher said. “We were just ready to have fun and go out on a win.”

QND enjoyed the same fortune the past three seasons, albeit as state champions – twice in 2A, once in 3A. Raiders coach Eric Orne said he told Smith after the game that he sees special things brewing with BC, and encouraged him to keep fostering a family atmosphere.

No problem there.

“Two years ago when I got the job, I had no idea what I was getting into in terms of how good these girls were,” Smith said. “So I mean, I just feel so blessed and fortunate to be around such great kids. They play so hard. It’s such a fun group to coach. A lot of togetherness and a lot of family. It’s just been an awesome experience.”

NORMAL – Another gritty victory for the road – the one leading both home and to the girls basketball offseason – wafted up for grabs as Geneva and Marian Catholic played for third place in Class 4A. Marian Catholic sprinted to a big early lead, Geneva countered and both teams played through mistakes Saturday at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena.

The Vikings shot 21 percent from the floor and still were within three points with 7:55 left in the game. While a 45-34 loss to the Spartans wasn’t an ideal way to cap the season, Geneva players still felt something bordering on contentment.

“We all believed in each other. We all fought these past couple weeks,” senior guard Sidney Santos said. “And I couldn’t imagine being here with anyone else, with a different team.”

Geneva (26-7) matched the 2008-09 team for the program’s best finish with its fourthplace showing.

That group of Vikings entered the state finals at 32-0 before losing both of their games.

A handful of current players – grade-schoolers at the time – traveled to Redbird Arena to lend their support.

Five years later, the cycle has started to repeat itself.

Washington and Daum are well known, but some smaller companies that worked at the same time are almost unknown. Burgun, Schverer & Cie (son) was founded in 1711 in Meisenthal, France. The company always made top-quality glass and survived by changing methods and designs to attract new customers. It made blown glass, watch glass, eyeglass lenses and tableware. By the 1860s, it was famous for its understanding of glass-making.

Emile Galle was an apprentice there before he left for his father’s company, and the two companies had a working arrangement for about 10 years.

In 1895 Burgun, Schverer & Cie produced cameo glass by the new and less expensive method of painting layers of colored and clear glass and then carving them. It also made other art glass, including enameled and gilt vases, often with silver mounts. Burgun, Schverer & Cie won many awards for its glass, and in 1901 it became a public company. It is now called Verrerie de Meisenthal.

Its glass has long been marked with a hard-to-understand emblem that includes the Cross of Lorraine, a thistle and the letters BS & C on a banner. Look for cameo glass by Burgun, Schverer & Cie. It may be overlooked by those with less information about the glass’s quality and mark. *** Q: I have four bentwood chairs that came from an old seminary. Underneath the seats there is a label that reads “J.S. Ford Johnson Co., New York, N.Y., 33 East 47th St., Chicago, Ill., San Francisco, Calif.” They were patented in March 1910 and are in good solid condition. Can you tell me something about the history?

A: J.S. Ford Johnson Co. was founded in 1867 by John S. Ford and Henry W. Johnson.

A: Eastman Kodak Co. made the Brownie Target Six-20 from July 1946 until May 1952. The front of your camera is known as the Art Deco face. The camera originally came with a roll of 620 film. The film was discontinued in 1995, but rolls may be available from sources for outof-production film. You can also use a roll of 120 film rewound onto a 620 spool, which is larger than a 120 spool. It takes two 620 spools to do this and must be done in a darkroom or darkbox so that no light touches the film. You can buy spare 620 spools online. The camera originally sold for $3.50. Today it sells online for $10-$25 without a box and $15-$40 with the original box.

Q: When I was rehabbing our garage, which was built in about 1917, I found a large piece of colorful cardboard in the old insulation. It looks like it was an advertising sign or perhaps the side of a breakfast food box of some kind. There’s a child’s face on it with the phrase “Toddy builds health and strength.”

A: Toddy was a brand name for a “meal in a glass” sold by a Buffalo, N.Y., company named Maltop, Inc. The milk-based drink, apparently meant for children, was heavily marketed in the eastern United States and Canada in the late 1920s, so your garage may not be quite as old as you think it is - or it was insulated a decade after it was built. The drink was sold in cans in grocery stores. Your cardboard piece may have been the side of a carton that once held Toddy cans. The most common Toddy-related collectible is a mixer-style drinking glass embossed with the brand name and a child’s face. The glasses sell for $10 to $20 online. Humor writer Dave Barry isn’t tired yet WASHINGTON – Spend a day running around with Dave Barry on a book tour, and two numbers jump out at you. Both are in the 60s.

One: Dave – no one addresses him as anything else all day – is 66. Two: “60-something,” which is the answer to, “So, how many book tours have you been on?”

The first is surprising because it seems impossible that the mop-topped, eternally baby-faced, eternally smart-aleck columnist/author/ comedian, who once wrote a book titled “I’ll Mature When I’m Dead,” is older than the president of the United States.

By nearly 15 years.

The second is surprising because – well, because he’s still alive.

“I was running down 54th Street in New York yesterday, holding a tuna fish sandwich, to get to a radio interview on time,” he’s saying this week between D.C. readings, “and I turned around and yell at the publicist, while we’re running, ‘I’m too old for this.’”

It’s one of his few straight lines all day. But he shows no signs of flagging.

Here’s what his D.C. day looked like, promoting his 39th book, “You Can Date Boys When You’re Forty,” a collection of essays about being the father of a teenage girl (and other stuff): Board a train in New York early, arrive at Union Station at 10:30 a.m. Television interview. Speech/reading/ signing at the National Press Club at 1 p.m. Across town to XM Radio interview with Bob Edwards. Back across town, check in at hotel (by now it’s after 4 p.m.), and then he’s got another hour-long radio interview by phone, after which he has to hustle up to the bookstore Politics and Prose, where he has an evening speech/reading/signing.

His overall tour schedule: 18 personal appearances in 14 metropolitan areas in 15 days, from Miami (where he lives) to New York to Seattle.

That isn’t include dozens of television, radio and newspaper/blog/Web interviews in between. The days stretch on for more than 12 hours. And there’s always a plane tomorrow morning.

“It’s like if you’re a band – say, the Beach Boys – and you come to town to perform.

Well, you’ve got to do your song, you’ve got to do your hits,” he says, late in the day.

“I’m not tired yet. Next week?

Next week, I’ll be tired.”

He’s been doing this sort of touring for both the hardcover and paperback versions of his books – collections of columns and essays, as well as novels – for three decades, ever since his weekly 800word humor column at the Miami Herald blew up into a pop-culture staple. He won the Pulitzer Prize, he had a television sitcom (“Dave’s World”), and “Peter and the

Starcatchers,” a young-adult novel he wrote with Ridley Pearson, is a bestseller that became a Broadway musical that won five Tony Awards.

Is he still popular?

The signings at his appearances can last as long as an hour.

“My dad’s a big fan and I’ve been reading him since I was 12,” says Lucy Novick, who stood in line for 45 minutes at Politics and Prose to get her book signed – and to get her picture taken, with a couple of friends, beside the man himself.

“He had this great story about an exploding Pop-Tart,” says Devon Mackenzie, also in line, explaining how she became a fan.

Of course, while touring is hard, he’s got the onstage patter down solid.

At each stop, he gets up behind the podium, amiable, fast-paced, playing off the audience, performing more than reading – a stand-up comic. His material on this tour revolves around his life at home in Coral Gables, a

Miami suburb, with his wife, Michelle Kaufman, a sportswriter at the Miami Herald, and Sophie, their 14-yearold daughter. The hits: the family tour to Israel (a camel is involved), a Justin Bieber concert (which a camel might have improved upon) and Dave’s sophisticated analysis of “50 Shades of Grey.” Also, his funeral plans (mimes, snipers, no camels).

Somebody calls out a question, asking if his daughter minds being written about.

“If she does, I guess she can pay her own way through college,” he says, drawing a huge laugh from the packed crowd. “Daddy needs material.”

His idol is Robert Benchley, the early 20th-century comic essayist who, with famed wit Dorothy Parker, was a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table.

Both thrive upon this sort of epigrammatic wit about the ways in which daily life – marriage, politics, child-rearing, driving, dogs, sports – is unintentionally funny or just plain bizarre. It’s PG-rated observational humor, never mean-spirited or profane.

Vintage Barry: “If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant’s life, she will choose to save the infant’s life without even considering if there are men on base.”

By now, it’s a little after 9 p.m. The bookstore crowd has wound down, all the books are signed and the staff is putting away the folding chairs. It’s been a 14-hour day. Dave is finished. Dave can go back to the hotel.

Dave has to get up early tomorrow.

Dave has another two weeks on tour.

Untreated diabetes leads to serious complications Dear Doctor K: How does Type 1 diabetes differ from Type 2 diabetes?

Dear Reader: Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are different diseases, but they share many things in common. Both types of diabetes are marked by elevated levels of blood glucose, or sugar. Type 2 diabetes, though, is much more common than Type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes also tends to begin in adulthood, although increasingly it is being seen in teenagers who are very obese.

Type 1 diabetes tends to start in childhood, although it can start later in life.

The two types of diabetes can both lead to the same serious complications. Left untreated, or inadequately treated, either type can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, amputation and blindness.

To understand diabetes – both Type 1 and Type 2 – it’s helpful to understand how your body metabolizes sugar. When you eat carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks them down into simple sugars, such as glucose. These simple sugars inside your gut get absorbed into your bloodstream.

Then the sugar travels to your cells, providing nourishment and energy.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff For sugar to give your cells energy, it has to get inside the cells. That’s where a hormone called insulin comes in. Insulin is a chemical made by the pancreas.

When the pancreas “sees” sugar levels rising in your blood after you eat, it releases insulin into the blood. When insulin reaches your cells, it causes sugar to enter the cells.

When sugar enters your cells, it leaves the blood. As a result, blood sugar levels drop. On the other hand, if your pancreas can’t make enough insulin, or if your cells don’t respond normally to insulin, sugar can’t get into the cells and builds up in your blood.

In healthy people, blood glucose levels remain within a narrow range. This is important because certain organs, such as the brain and kidneys, depend on a consistent, steady supply of glucose.

The more common Type 2 diabetes results from a combination of abnormalities. First, your cells become less responsive to insulin. The pancreas rallies to

compensate for this by pumping out more insulin. For a while, that keeps blood sugar levels normal.

Eventually, the pancreas gets “pooped” and can’t keep up with the increased insulin demand.

Blood sugar levels then rise, resulting in diabetes.

Treatments for Type 2 diabetes are drugs that make cells more responsive to insulin, drugs that encourage more insulin production by the pancreas, and insulin injections. Weight loss and regular exercise make cells more responsive to insulin.

The less common Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. The body’s immune system mistakes the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas as foreign and destroys them. This eventually leaves the body unable to produce insulin.

To reverse symptoms, people with Type 1 diabetes must have daily injections of insulin. This replaces the insulin their bodies cannot produce.

A century ago, many people who developed either type of diabetes died prematurely.

Dr. Wallace: Our school club held an initiation breakfast in one of the nicer restaurants in our area. During the ceremony, one of the girls stole a small painting that was hanging in the eating area.

The owner of the restaurant sent a letter to the principal of our school demanding payment for the painting ($100) and informing him that our school functions will no longer be allowed unless a $100 deposit is paid.

This incident has hurt our club’s reputation (everyone in school was talking about it) and as the club’s president, I am asking you for the best solution to solve this mess. We really can’t afford $100.

Then call a club meeting and ask that the girl who took the picture please return it to the restaurant (have it sent by express mail). If that doesn’t happen, the alternate plan should include a club fundraiser that will raise enough money to clear the debt.

Dr. Wallace: My best friend’s stepfather is very mean to her.

Besides being verbally abusive, he also hits her. My friend tells me everything and has shown me the bruises on her back and arms.

I had my mother call her mother, but my mother was told to mind her own business and that my best friend was bad (that’s not true) and the punishment she has received was deserved.

I really worry about my friend. She used to be a very happy girl, but now she’s always sad.

If your school has a counselor or a nurse, discuss your friend’s problem with one of them. If this isn’t possible, talk to your principal. School personnel know what to do in situations like this. I would also take today’s column to the professional at school so he or she can read your letter and my response.

Dear Abby: About a year ago, I stopped seeing a man I’ll call “Vince.” Since then he has been stalking me. He sends me texts with photos he took of us while we were dating, but distorts them to make me look like I’m stabbing him in the heart. He sends videos with my head on a dancing Barbie doll. My neighbors tell me they see him drive past my house. (He lives across town.) I refuse to talk to him now because he scares me.

Vince has now begun making moves on my cousin “Nancy.”

She says their relationship isn’t romantic, but others have told me they have seen them cuddle at restaurants and parks. He still continues to send me scary pictures and emails.

How can I tell Nancy about this without her thinking it’s jealous retaliation against their new relationship? I honestly believe he is getting close to her only to spite me and keep an emotional hold on me. His relationship with her has made me afraid to tell her about my personal life or hang out with her for fear that he’ll show up with

After drawing trumps, declarer should have attacked clubs. West would have won with his queen and shifted to a spade, but South would have taken a finesse. East would have won and led back a diamond. South would have ruffed and played the club king.

West could have won this trick or the next and led a spade, but declarer would have won with dummy ace and discarded dummy’s last spade on his fourth club. Then, finally, South would have ruffed his third spade. He would have taken one spade, five hearts, one diamond, two clubs and that spade ruff on the board.
