The St. Charles Public Library is a great resource for making stuff – from instructional books to inspirational DIY magazines to workshops and more. We’re in the midst of Teen Tech Week; and Saturday, we are hosting a 3-D printing demo from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Community Room.

From 4 to 5:30 p.m. March 21, middle school students are invited to choose from a wide array of duct tape colors and styles to make a wallet. Looking ahead, April brings National Poetry Month, and we’ve scheduled a special poetry workshop for middle school students at 4 p.m.

Our seed library reopened last week. The library offers heirloom and open-pollinated seeds free to the community. While a green thumb might help, a library card is not required. Seeds can be checked out, planted and returned after the growing season for other gardeners to enjoy every year. Please know returning seeds is an option for more experienced gardeners, but not mandatory.

Full-day kindergarten on hold for Batavia

School board members cite cost as primary issue

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members say a full-day kindergarten program is a great idea but have decided that the district simply cannot afford it right now.

In discussions Tuesday, board members left open the option of revisiting the idea, but were chastened by a bleak financial forecast for District 101.

Going to a full-day kindergarten schedule would generate additional operating costs of nearly $680,000 a year, said chief academic officer Brad Newkirk, who cautioned that making cuts in other programs to cover those costs would destroy faculty morale.

“I’m worried about the financial and cultural costs,” Newkirk told board members.

Although no formal vote was taken, four of the seven school board members made clear that they are not ready to pursue full-day kindergarten now, given the district’s financial situation.

“Until we know we’ve got the money, I’m not comfortable robbing Peter to pay Paul,” board member John Dryden said.

Board member Jason Stoops agreed.

“We have to look at the business side of this as well,” Stoops said.

Board President Cathy Dremel and board member Chris Lowe also said the district should wait.

Tony Inglese, the district’s chief financial officer, told the board that the district’s declining enrollment will result in reduced state funding support and that maintaining current staffing levels would put the district into a deficit spending situation.

However, he said, natural attrition may be expected to realize needed staff reductions.

“We need to make some adjustments to live within our means,” Inglese said. “The margins are razor-thin.”

Total enrollment stands at about 6,000. In five years, enrollment is projected to be about 5,300.

Currently, kindergartners in Batavia attend school on a half-day schedule. Most surrounding school districts offer full-day kindergarten, and Bata-

via did, too, until budget constraints forced it to return to the half-day model in 2014.

Board member Tina Bleakley said she frequently hears from both parents and teachers in favor of bringing back full-day kindergarten and said that the board should continue discussing the idea.

“This is not going to go away until we can show whether we can afford it or not,” Bleakley said.

Board member Jon Gaspar indicated strong support for a full-day schedule, even if that means making cuts elsewhere.

“When we lose students at early ages, we lose them for a long time,” Gaspar said.

Board member Sue Locke also expressed support for full-day kindergarten.

PUBLIC SAFETY ASSESSMENT Tool can help judges decide on setting of defendants’ bond

asloboda@shawmedia.com When it comes to the legal system, Lisa Aust – who serves as executive director of Kane County court services – said a lot of people don’t think about the setting of bond.

But, she said, bond plays an important role, as it can affect how long individuals remain in jail. After a few days in jail, she said, people may risk losing their jobs, making it difficult to pay for rent or a mortgage.

There’s no reason low-risk defendants should sit in jail because they can’t come up with $100 bail, Aust said.

Since January, Kane County has been using a tool – the Public Safety Assessment, or PSA – to help judges better determine which defendants are high-risk and which are lowrisk not based on the nature of their criminal charge but on their history, Aust said.

This is important because highrisk people can be arrested on a petty charge, she said.

For example, she said, there was a man arrested in January on a small drug charge but his criminal history showed he had a high risk because of his past in other jurisdictions.

Kane County adopted the PSA as part of a pilot project spearheaded by the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts to evaluate the PSA for potential statewide implementation, according to a news release.

Cook and McLean counties also are participating.

AOIC Director Michael J. Tardy stated in the release that the agency was pleased with Kane County’s involvement.

“Until now, our judges have not had access to the kind of empirical data that would help them make the most effective decisions about who to release and who to detain before trial,” Tardy stated in the release.

“The Public Safety Assessment will fill this critical gap.”

According to the release, the Laura and John Arnold Foundation developed the PSA after research showed that, nationwide, a large percentage of high-risk defendants obtain release before trial while lowrisk defendants often are detained.

But, she said, characteristics about the defendant – including race, gender, age and socioeconomic status – don’t come into play with the PSA because it is based off criminal history.

“That’s the best,” Aust said.

Initially, Kane County focused

on completing the PSA for those charged with felonies but the county has been able to use it for misdemeanor cases, Aust wrote in an email. She reported that 588 assessments were completed between Jan. 11 to March 8.

She commended local police agencies for their cooperation and communication.

“Our local law enforcement departments have really tried hard to get their paperwork completed as early as possible so that our staff can

get the PSAs processed as quickly as possible,” Aust wrote. “Our staff start at 5:30 a.m. to complete the PSAs, distribute them to the courtroom personnel and get ready for the start of bond court at 8:30 a.m.”

According to the release, the PSA has led to reducing jail populations and pretrial crime rates in Kentucky. Additionally, it noted, a county jail in North Carolina has decreased its population by 20 percent since the county began working toward implementation in spring 2014.

Both Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer and Aust said it is too early to know the assessment’s impact here.

“But we are keeping a close eye on the data we have been collecting,” Aust wrote. “After three more months of completing the PSA here in Kane County, we hope to have statistically meaningful data that will let us determine what, if any, impacts the tool is having for us here.”

Preliminary hearing set in Geneva murder case

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Geneva woman charged with murdering her husband is expected in court next month for a preliminary hearing.

Julia L. Gutierrez, 53, was charged in February with two counts Julia L. of first-degree murder Gutierrez in a case that has been described as similar to an incident involving her and her husband in 2002.

In a brief appearance at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township on Wednesday, her preliminary hearing was set for 9 a.m. April 21. She is being represented by Julia

Yetter, a public defender, who said Gutierrez is not asserting her right to a speedy trial at this time.

Gutierrez is accused of fatally drugging her husband with a smoothie containing six sleeping pills, the prosecution has said.

Police reportedly found his body at the couple’s Crissey Avenue home in Geneva during a well-being check on Jan. 28.

The prosecution has said Gutierrez was found unconscious in an upstairs bathroom.

In 2002, the prosecution has said, Gutierrez gave her husband a milkshake laced with sleeping pills and received treatment after that incident.

No charges were filed at that time.

Gutierrez is being held at the Kane County jail without bond.

ST. CHARLES – Those wanting to travel through downtown St. Charles on Saturday should take note of road closures and parking restrictions planned for the St. Patrick’s Parade.

The parade, which is held on Main Street, is set to begin at 2 p.m.

Main Street, which is also known as Route 64, will be closed between Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue, or Route 25, beginning at 1:45 p.m., according to a St. Charles Police Department news release.

Also at that time, Second Street – or Route 31 – will be closed between State and Illinois streets, the release states.

Detour routes for the closed roads will be posted and staffed by police and emergency management personnel, according to the release. It indicated the alternate routes will use State, Seventh and Illinois streets as well as Illinois and Fifth avenues.

“The police department encourages drivers seeking quick passage through the region to use alternate routes, as long delays may be experienced,” the release states.

According to the release, parking will be prohibited on the parade and detour routes from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Violators will be towed.

Beginning at 11 a.m., parking will be banned on and traffic will be blocked from several side streets to allow for parade staging, according to the release.

The following streets will be affected: • Walnut Street from South Third Street to South Seventh Street.

• South Fourth Street from Main Street to Illinois Street.

• South Fifth Street from Main Street to Illinois Street.

• South Sixth Street from Main Street to Illinois Street.

10 Woman resentenced to probation

in fatal 2009 crash near Elburn

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Kane County judge on Wednesday resentenced a woman who had been serving a prison term in connection with a 2009 crash that killed a St. Charles couple.

Alia Bernard, 31, was sentenced to seven years in prison in February 2012 after she pleaded guilty to two counts of felony aggravated driving under the influence.

The sentence later was reduced to six years.

Through her attorney, Bernard last year filed a motion to withdraw her plea on the claim that the state didn’t use an approved method in lab tests that determined there was marijuana in her system at the time of the crash.

On Wednesday, Judge David Kliment vacated her prison sentence and gave her a new sentence of four years of probation and 400 hours of community service. As part of the terms, she is not to consume or ingest

drugs or alcohol.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said it was clear Kliment put a lot of time and research into his decision, as he gave a “thoughtful” and “well-reasoned” decision.

Noting the longevity of the case, McMahon said that every time the victims of this case return to court, it “is painful for them.”

Wade and Denise Thomas were killed in the crash, which happened about 8:20 a.m. May 23, 2009, at Route 47 and Smith Road in Blackberry Township, south of Elburn.

A vehicle in the southbound lane of Route 47 stopped to turn left onto Smith Road, followed by two more vehicles, waiting for several motorcycles to pass. The motorcycles were heading north.

Bernard was driving a 1999 Toyota Solara, which hit the last stopped vehicle in the rear. The collision created a chain reaction that pushed the first vehicle into the path of the oncoming motorcycles, killing the couple. In all, the crash involved three cars and six motorcycles.

From its warm and cuddly resident rabbit to its engaging, endangered Blanding’s turtles, the discovery center is filled with fascinating, furry and fun critters of all sorts, all ready to strut their stuff and show off their special characteristics.

For turtles, bats and spiders, many of those characteristics elevate them to “superhero” status.

Find out how and why these often mysterious, frequently misunderstood creatures accomplish feats that defy imagination during the Superheroes of Nature program, which will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 18. Enjoy a supper of pizza, drinks and dessert, and play games that highlight bats’ super echolocation skills, spiders’ stealthy web-spinning prowess and the slow-but-steady strength of turtles. Volunteers from the STC Underground teen center will don superhero costumes for fun photo ops.

Not all superheroes wear capes and tights, of course. Many don khakis and sport the logos of organizations that perform work critical to understanding and protecting endangered spe-

cies. Representatives from the DuPage County Forest Preserve District’s Willowbrook Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will be on hand to discuss the amazing Blanding’s turtle.

And with Easter right around the corner and spring surely close at hand, two events showcase the season’s most recognizable mascot. Enjoy an up-close-and-personal encounter with the center’s very own resident Easter bunny, Peter the Rabbit, during the Bunny Buddies program from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 20. Bring your camera for delightful photo ops with our personable rabbit, and craft a decorated flower pot to plant and fill with radish seeds to start your own home garden. Follow the paw prints around the center on a bunny-themed scavenger hunt, and hop to your heart’s content competing in rabbit relays.

Grab a doughnut, down some OJ and join Hickory Knolls staff members on a hike to discover the world of Peter Rabbit and his piggie friends – the guinea pigs – who know a lot about being a mammal. Learn what mammals, such as squirrels, deer, possums and raccoons, are doing as spring emerges, and look for signs, such as tracks and scat, to show where they’ve been and where they’re going.

ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles North High School student has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, according to a St. Charles School District 303 news release.

The award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered a significant amount of their time to serve their community and county, the release said.

St. Charles North nominated Vincent Sarna last fall, according to the release. It indicated the honor was granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, which recognizes middle and high school students, on behalf of President Barack Obama.

The release described Sarna as “very involved” in his school. He participates in such organizations as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the North High School HOPE Club, Health Occupations Students of America, the school newspaper, the

Roadside safety check set in North Aurora KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com

NORTH AURORA – The Illinois State Police and the North Aurora Police Department will conduct a joint roadside safety check in Kane County during the weekend of March 18, according to a news release.

“The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois,” the release states. “Officers working this detail will be watchful for drivers who are operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, transporting open alcoholic beverages or driving under the influence. ... RSCs are designed to keep our roads safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road.”

The release indicated that the project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Transportation Safety.

Extra credit in college Having been in college BEFORE THE since August, there is one major thing I have concluded DIPLOMA my high school teachers absoDenise Cartina lutely lied about: extra credit.

Throughout my four years of high school, it seemed that each year the number of extra credit opportunities, whether it be completing an additional worksheet or writing an extra essay about a topic, dwindled. My teachers always claimed extra credit did not exist in college and that it simply would disappear once I stepped into my first college classroom.

Nevertheless, out of all the college classes I have taken, almost half of them have offered chances to get extra credit.

Primarily, if there is anything I have learned, it is that you do the extra credit. A lot of the time it pays off and significantly helps secure one’s grade to at least a B or A. The majority of the extra credit work I have completed over these past two semesters has not only helped me get extra points on exams, but also has boosted my scores on essays and group assignments. Most recently, I visited the Field Museum in Chicago. Not only was the admission free all of February for Illinois residents, but I also received 50 extra credit points for one of my classes. All I need to do now is write a simple reflection essay describing two exhibits and my overall experience there.

Thus, on a Friday morning (since I have no Friday classes), my two fellow Waubonsee Community College friends and I headed down to spend the day at the Field Museum.

I cannot recall the last time I visited the museum, maybe three or four years ago. However, I do clearly remember going there awhile back in sixth grade with the rest of my grade; that was a real extravaganza.

Truthfully, the Field Museum also has been my preferred museum of choice in Chicago. I just love roaming around the museum and taking in all the history of every individual exhibit. Yet, since there are so many exhibits, it is a letdown knowing I can never spend just one day there seeing everything I truly want. I always stop at the “Inside Ancient Egypt” exhibit since I always have been fascinated with pharaohs, hieroglyphics, mummies and just ancient Egypt in general.

Additionally, of course, the “Evolving Planet” exhibit is also an attraction I never miss because, hello, dinosaurs.

Plus, I got to travel through 4 billion years of life on Earth and really get a chance to see all the unique characteristics of each period in time.

Looking back on that Friday trip, there are three or four exhibits I really wished I could have seen, but my friends and I had to drive home before rush hour. Even so, it was cool knowing that I got 50 extra credit points for something I was really engaged and surely interested in, all for free. I want to give a huge shout-out to all my high school teachers out there. I just have one thing to say: Extra credit exists in college!

Unfortunately, in my precinct, hardly anyone has ever heard of their committeeman, who has been representing them for 24 years! While that is totally unacceptable, I do not doubt this is common among precincts across the nation. This is why I am running for the position.

I’ve talked with many people in my precinct, and they don’t feel like the government adequately represents them.

As a member of the millennial

generation, I know that many of us feel the same way.

WRITING THROUGH REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE Former Kane County resident uses London move as inspiration for novel

ccasey@shawmedia.com It’s one thing to adapt to a new city after a move – adjusting to the culture and surroundings, and familiarizing one’s self with how to live and get by.

It’s a whole different story when that relocation involves moving to a new country – from the U.S. to England, for example.

Colleen Wagner grew up in Bartlett and lived in both Batavia and Geneva, spending time student-teaching at Geneva High School and working full-time at St. Charles North High School, before the job of her then fiance, now husband, forced them to relocate to London.

It was not the easiest transition, but Wagner, who uses the pen name Rumer Haven, used writing as her therapy to cope with the changes. Not only did writing help, but it also inspired her novel “What the Clocks Know,” which will be released on Friday, March 18.

The story follows a character named Margot, who also drops her life in America and moves to London. Instead of finding herself, Margot only feels more lost and begins to have paranormal experiences – something that veers away from Wagner’s experiences in London.

It’s been eight years since Wagner made the big move, and the transition now seems nearly complete. With “What the Clocks Know” set for release, Wagner caught up with Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey to talk about the novel.

Chris Casey: First off, talk about the pen

name. Where did it come from and why have one?

Colleen Wagner: I honestly never thought I would use one. I though it would complicate things. Ultimately, I decided to go with one because I had been editing for some time and thought it would be a good way to separate my editing and writing lives. Sort of like a mental shift from one side of publications to the other. It’s not really a different persona but separate profiles to help focus on the book, marketing and promotions and things like that. I wish I had a good story for where [the] name came from. Rumer came from a book I read by an author named Rumer Godden and my admiration for her work, and the last name came from the movie “Philadelphia Story.” There’s a character named C.K. Dexter Haven, and that’s where Haven is from. I should probably come up with a better story for how I chose them.

Casey: Tell me a little about what “What the Clocks Know” means to you.

Wagner: It means quite a bit because it feels very personal to me. The fact that it was inspired by a significant turning

point in my life is so special. Relocating gave me the time and helped spark the idea. It was almost therapy at the time that I transferred to the character. It’s special and deeply personal, which is scary to share with others. Being in a new environment, there’s a feeling of initial excitement, but also that feeling of being lost. It’s a parallel to what I went through. London is a great setting for this whole paranormal experience, ghost-like story, because there are so many great Victorian cemeteries and gothic architecture everywhere. I always wanted to write something like

that, and when the idea came to me, I rolled with it.

Casey: Do you get to come back to Kane County often?

Wagner: I am definitely back in the area. I’m still so close with my family and friends. It’s definitely not the easiest thing to hop on a plane – it gets expensive – but family is my everything. I make [it a] point to come back. When the book comes out in print, I would love to come back and host a local signing to meet people face-to-face and talk about my story.

‘IT JUST KIND OF HAPPENS’ Saints advance with latest postseason rout

kdruley@shawmedia.com ROCKFORD – Smart passing bred crisp long-range shooting, which in turn produced an ultimately awe-inducing first-quarter lead for the St. Charles East boys basketball team Wednesday night.

But wait, Prairie Ridge nearly erased a 10-point hole in the next few minutes of an IHSA Class 4A Rock Valley College Sectional semifinal.

Leave it to the Saints to return to their savvy ways soon enough. And keep them.

Following a familiar postseason script, East drilled 3s and handled the Wolves’ pressure in key spots in the first half before pulling away. A 6846 victory clinched a spot in Friday’s sectional championship game against Rockford Auburn.

“I mean, it just kind of happens, you know,” Saints senior forward Zach Hondlik said. “It feels good to win this big, blow teams out. I mean, we don’t come here expecting to do that, but we come expecting to win, and we come playing hard.”

Friday’s game between East (18-12) and Auburn (23-6) is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m., a half-hour earlier than this week’s semifinal start times. RVC officials bartered for extra time to set up for Saturday’s annual Science Olympiad at the school.

The Saints didn’t bother with any experiments against Prairie Ridge (254). Then again, the past few weeks have been something of a study in bonding.

Buoyed by the healthiest rotation it has seen since the opening games of the season, East maintained an edge throughout the program’s first sectional game since 2007. Again, the eruption started early, as senior guard J.T. Ford drilled a trio of 3-pointers before four minutes elapsed.

East coach Pat Woods said the team “worked entirely” on breaking Prairie Ridge’s 1-2-2 pressure this week, and it showed.

“My teammates were really finding me, and that’s really what it all came down to,” Ford said. Generally, when I’m open, I mean, I’m going to knock it down. And my teammates really broke that press really well and they found me, and I just knocked them down.”

“It’d be great if we have him back on Friday, and if not, we didn’t have him tonight, and I thought we played great,” Woods said.

Christopher Bradshaw led Prairie Ridge with 13 points and eight rebounds. The Wolves finished 18 for 44 from the floor (40.9 percent), while the Saints shot 24 for 48. Perhaps the Science Olympiad set could calculate that percentage.

At one point, even East’s boisterous, well-traveled Orange Fever student section followed the Saints’ lead by displaying some cleverness. When Wolves senior point guard Logan Card

went to the free-throw line late in the second quarter, the group chanted “WHO’S YOUR DADDY?” It wasn’t a nod to the Saints’ lead, which again had swelled to double digits and eventually stood at 26 points after three quarters. Card’s father, Cork, coaches the Wolves.

When Ford swished another 3 with 2:10 left in the third, the Orange Fever grew slightly more assertive.

“YOU CAN’T STOP HIM!” they bellowed.

“It’s a sectional game, so if you don’t have energy, I mean, that’s just not good,” McQuillan said. “We had energy because we know what we can accomplish, and we’re going to keep working hard, and hopefully we can accomplish those goals.”

Turnovers and rebounding plagued the Knights all game, with many turning into easy layups or second-chance opportunities. The Titans enjoyed a commanding, 32-23, rebounding edge, while the Knights committed 16 turnovers.

“I think rebounding was truly the difference for us,” Conroy said.

“I know we really struggled to keep them off the glass.”

Three-pointers by Ethan Conroy, Ryan David and Mark Lilly gave the Knights an early lead at 11-8, but

such long-range shooting probably wasn’t good in the long run.

“That was my biggest fear, that we took early jump shots,” Joe Conroy said. “We kept talking about that and how we had to pound it inside and try to establish an inside presence instead of going for outside shots.”

Knights 6-foot-6 center Jake Gomes got few touches and didn’t have a field goal until late in the third quarter.

The Titans made 22 two-point field goals compared to just six by the Knights.

“We didn’t do a good job of running some of the sets that we worked on all week at practice,” Joe Conroy said. “But I’m not going to fault the kids. That’s a credit to their defense.

They’re long, and you can’t simulate that length in practice.”

Rockford Boylan (30-2) also troubled the Knights with excellent, crisp ball movement, using a lot of cuts to the basket and swift passing to create easier scoring opportunities.

“They are a good team,” Kaneland senior Ryan David said. “They were sort of like a mixture of LaSalle-Peru and DeKalb. They were big, they moved the ball well, and they shot well from the outside, and were a good rebounding and physical team.”

The Knights trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half, but did have a final run left in them, pulling to within 48-37 on a Dylan Vaca 3-pointer with 5:55 left in the game, but wouldn’t get any closer.

Vaca led the Knights with 11 points but was just 3 of 15 from the field. David added 10 points, six rebounds and five blocks.

Kaneland shot just 28 percent (12 of 43) from the field, but the Knights are far the first team that’s struggled against the Titans this season.

“That’s probably one of the fastest ball-moving teams we’ve played against, even better than DeKalb and LaSalle-Peru in conference,” Gomes said. “They’re a really good team and they came out and played harder than we did today.”

WOODSTOCK – History has shown that sectionals are unkind to the Kaneland boys basketball team.

During Wednesday’s IHSA Class 3A Woodstock North Sectional semifinal, it was Rockford Boylan that was downright vicious.

The Titans used an 11-0 run late in the second quarter to take a 35-20 lead at the half and then never let their lead sink to below double digits while earning a 59-40 victory.

Boylan advanced to face Glenbard South in Friday’s sectional championship, while Kaneland’s season comes to an end at 20-9.

The Knights now have lost six consecutive sectional semifinals.

They last won one in 1988.

“They’re a really good basketball team and definitely the best basketball team that we’ve faced all year, and that’s no disrespect to anyone else we played,” Knights coach Joe Conroy said of the Titans. “They’re deeper, and every kid they have is a

Opening Day looms for Cougars

GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars’ 2016 season opener is set for four weeks from today at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Cougars, ushering in their 26th season in Geneva, host Clinton (Iowa) at 6:30 p.m. April 7.

Kane County, which earned a Midwest League playoff berth in 2015, is entering the second season of a two-year player development contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Former major league infielder Mike Benjamin is in his first season as manager.

The Geneva Park District Sunset Dancers dance company attended the Kids Artistic Review Dance Competition on Feb. 27 at the Hemmens Cultural Arts Center in Elgin. The team, consisting of 19 Fox Valley dancers, competed in three categories: lyrical, jazz and musical theater. ON CAMPUS James Nokes When Heather Mende switched from sprints to javelin, she received the same reaction from everyone except her closest friends. “ ‘Wait, you’re lefthanded,’ ” quipped the St. Charles East graduate, who will throw javelin for Valparaiso for the second straight women’s track and field season after sprinting Heather as a freshman and Mende sophomore.

A javelin thrower from the left when the outdoor season opens in two weeks, Mende is on the right side of the political aisle. Reached by phone Saturday from the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., the Crusaders’ senior has a passion that extends well beyond the track.

As Republican and Democratic candidates for the 2016 presidential nomination make their pitches to voters across the country in a hotly-contested primary season, Mende listened to speeches from Ben Carson and John Kasich.

It’s possible she could one day explore a career in political communications. Mende majors in public relations and creative writing and said she has a “passion for politics.”

Until then, there is plenty to keep her busy athletically. Although her father, Kevin, first suggested she might try the javelin when Mende aspired to contribute more to her middle school team, she picked it up last season.

Mende found comfort in some similarities from sprinting while welcoming the challenge of a new skill.

“It’s been a whole new world competing in javelin,” Mende said. “It’s a very different event. It’s like I’ve completely switched sports. Some of the same muscle groups are trained and used, but it’s a very different skill set.

“But, I’m getting better after every practice. It’ll be really cool to see what I can do after one year of javelin.

I’m now giving advice and people are watching me to see how I make my throws.”

Mende, who originally enrolled at Illinois State, called Valparaiso coach Ryan Moore midway through her freshman season. She was recruited by the Crusaders and wanted to make a change. Little did she know that change also would include acquiring a new skill.

The Valpo coach, who enters his eighth year at the helm of the program, said he looks for athletic versatility when recruiting for javelin.

There’s a skill set that involves strength in manipulating an implement overhead while using lower body coordination. Moore has noticed it crosses over with other track and field events as well as volleyball players, baseball pitchers and football quarterbacks.

“The approach to javelin mimics the long and triple jumps,” Moore said. “I really expect big things from Heather this season. She’s really come on and is a leader of the squad.

The group of throwers look to her.

Because she’s worked so hard I think she’s about to see some quality results.”

On the Valparaiso campus, Moore said Mende is the “prototypical” student athlete. In 2012, she earned

the Horizon League Sportsmanship Award, showed excellence in journalism for sportswriting and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity.

“I’ve always been involved,” said Mende, who ran the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relays for the Saints in the IHSA Class 3A state meets her sophomore and senior seasons. “I take a lot of classes and am involved in a lot of organizations on campus.

But I block off the hours between 2 and 6 p.m. That’s my time for athletics. I don’t check any emails or take any phone calls. It’s always been that way. It’s my time to focus on what I do. The outside world doesn’t exist during those hours.”

An outside world in which Mende is very much involved.

Online therapy in its infancy Dear Dr. K: I’ve been looking into cognitive behavioral therapy to help with my anxiety.

It would be convenient to do this therapy from home and, surprisingly, there seem to be many online CBT options. But would the therapy be less effective if I didn’t have a personal connection with an actual therapist?

Dear Reader: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) attempts to correct ingrained patterns of negative thoughts and behaviors. It’s an effective treatment for depression, anxiety and other behavioral health problems. It also is widely used to help people with chronic diseases cope with that burden.

Face-to-face visits with a therapist can be inconvenient and may be expensive (depending on your insurance). And there are online CBT options. But the question is: Are they effective?

I spoke to my colleague Dr. James Cartreine, a licensed clinical psychologist and a researcher at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He pointed out because these online programs are relatively new, there are only a few evaluations of how effective they are. He noted a team of researchers recently reviewed five well-designed studies comparing online CBT to face-to-face visits with clinicians providing CBT. The patients all were working-age adults being treated for social anxiety or panic disorder.

All of the online therapies delivered treatment through written content. Some programs added text-messaging and discussion forums. Most also involved some communication with a mental health clinician, usually a psychologist, over email or private messaging systems. This could be quite limited, however. In one study, psychologists were limited to spending only 10 minutes a week on each patient. Finally, most included homework assignments that

All treatment groups, both face-to-face and online CBT, had significantly improved symptoms. One study found better outcomes for the online treatment. The others found equal results between the two types.

While these results are encouraging for people who are interested in online CBT, I’d emphasize they are not conclusive. First of all, five small studies do not provide a lot of evidence. Furthermore, researchers tend to submit studies with a positive result for publication. They don’t always seek to publish, and journal editors often don’t want to publish, studies showing treatment was ineffective.

More important, CBT is not one thing.

What I mean is a pill is a pill, whichever doctor has prescribed it. But CBT is a treatment that is practiced differently by different therapists, and those therapists are not all equally skilled. So it’s hard to know from published studies whether the particular online CBT program you are interested in will be effective.

I’m not knocking online CBT; I’m just saying it is in its infancy. I hope most online CBT programs prove to be effective.

They not only are more convenient for the people who use them, they also require less time on the part of the therapists.

That would allow therapists to offer treatment to more people.

Dr. Wallace: You once wrote in one of your columns teens are in one of the highest groups when it comes to suicide. This was a difficult statistic to believe because I thought teens were a happy group, and older people were more likely to kill themselves.

I recently was completely shocked when a student at my school killed herself. Everybody thought she was a normal, happy teenager, and she was very popular at school. I didn’t know her really well, but I have been wondering why this girl decided to kill herself.

Can you explain why teens are so unhappy they prefer death over coping with their current problems? – Nameless, Miami Nameless: For several years, I consulted with teens at Community Psychiatric Centers in Santa Ana, California. I worked with teens who had been hospitalized because they had suicidal thoughts. Like you, I wanted to know what drove so many young people toward taking their lives.

This is what I learned: The prime factors include feelings of isolation and loneliness; extreme pressure to achieve excellent grades; a feeling of being worthless; a feeling of being abandoned; and a lack of respect from peers, educators and family.

We all must understand how difficult the teen years can be. It’s a roller coaster ride of

East should see what is required, because if South had a third heart, West would have cashed his heart king at trick three. (This was the key point behind leading the queen, not the king, at trick two.)

Lastly, note that if North had been the declarer, this defense would have been much harder to find.

Gloomiest color on spectrum now hottest for home

Special to The Washington Post If you ask a thousand people to name their favorite color, you might get one that would say gray.

But look at any lifestyle or shelter magazine and you’ll see that gray is hot and seemingly here to stay.

Although white remains the best-selling color for most categories of home furnishings, gray is catching up.

Not only have homeowners embraced gray for things that are easy to change – such as wall colors or throw pillows – they also have embraced gray for things they expect to be using 10, 20 and even 30 years from now, including kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures.

Gray has even gone global, influencing traditional crafts that most of us assume to be impervious to fashion and trends. For example, carpet weavers in Tibet, Nepal and Northern India still are producing patterns that are hundreds of years old, but now the colors are contrasting shades of gray. These same weavers also produce contemporary designs with a strong gray presence, said Salesh Adhikhary of Globalcraft Rugs, a carpeting wholesaler based in Houston.

How could a color more often associated with bad weather, somber

I’m a big believer in layering.

A layered approach helps you build warmth and take it away as needed. When I was growing up, four seasons meant four looks in the house. Today, I think fewer rules apply whether you’re West or East Coast.

Fall does not necessarily mean burgundy. It can mean grass green, regardless of weather temperatures. I recommend you cast off the notion of seasonal aesthetics; think about what’s practical for you and your family and try living as though there are no seasons.

But I really love the go-for-it feeling that a large piece of patterned upholstery offers.

• Mixing patterns: I love pattern on pattern, particularly plaids or stripes with other prints. The key to success is whether or not the other print is complementary to the plaid.

Continued from page 2 position in the home-decorating pantheon began about six or seven years ago as a desire for a “new neutral.” After nearly two decades of nothing but “beige, beige, beige,” said Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, “We were beiged out.”

Gray was first promoted by celebrity interior designers, whose work was widely published in the shelter magazines that focus on upscale interiors.

This initial coverage conveyed an important truth long known by colorists like herself, Jordan said. It showed that gray can be inspiring. “They showed that gray is not cold, industrial or boring, that it can be calming and sophisticated,” Jordan said.

And that began to change the thinking of the general public as well as the larger design community.

Gray began to appear in fashion and hospitality settings (hotels and restaurants) and eventually in the editorial pages of magazines that more closely mirror the preferences and aspirations of the average homeowner. As editorial exposure to gray increased, the more comfortable people became with the idea of incorporating gray into their own houses, Jordan said. At the same time, home-furnishing stores such as Ethan Allen, West Elm and Restoration Hardware began to include gray in their furnishing vignettes, and this showed consumers – in a very hands-on way – how to work with gray, Jordan said.

A desire to connect with nature and bring the colors of the outdoors inside and timing also account for gray’s increasing popularity, said Lita Dirks, an interior designer based in Greenwood, Colo. “As we got through the recession, people wanted to ‘open the window’ and make a more efficient cleaner look that went in another color direction. All the softer colors of nature come from the family of gray, so it was an obvious way to go.”

In many cases, Dirks said, homeowners are incorporating nature into

their living rooms in the literal sense by using old barn wood and repurposed wood for floors or furniture.

An indication of gray’s increasing acceptance with the general public is their purchase of gray “investment pieces” such as sofas, said Jill Waage, executive editor of Better Homes and Gardens Brand and a keen observer of American interior trends for more than 20 years. Although she still sees a lot of white in kitchens and bathrooms, “Gray is common now,” she said. The most common use of gray that Waage has observed is flooring.

Indeed, Jackie Dettmar of the Mohawk Group, one of the largest carpeting manufacturers in the country, noted that in residential carpeting, their top sellers for the last five years have been shades of gray. Melanie McGeehan of Forbo, the top selling linoleum brand in the United States, said beige colors are still their “strongest sellers,” but grays are a “strong number two.”

Because consumers expect to use “hardscape” items like cabinets and bathroom fixtures for two or three decades, manufacturers do not make the decision to offer gray lightly, said Nancy Yusko, a design manager for kitchen and bathroom fixtures at Kohler.

“We would never launch a color we didn’t feel had staying power because a homeowner puts our product in and expects it to stay for 20-plus years.

“We watch fashion, architecture, the auto industry, interior design. We also reflect on the zeitgeist as well,” Yusko added. “When we actually look across industries and reflect on historical data, we find a lot of indications on what is penetrating culture and what’s on the surface.”

Yusko also pointed out, in a bathroom, the color of the fixture itself can enhance the relaxation that comes with a long soak in the tub or a few minutes in the shower. Most people assume the benefits of the “spa experience” come from their contact with water, but when you reduce contrast by replacing standard white fixtures with ones in a softer color like gray, you will feel calmer whether you are in the tub or not, she said. adno=0348391
