Run for the Nuns event raises money for charity

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – Sister Patricia Jean, of the Kentucky-based Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker, knew to pace herself as she participated in Sunday’s 5K Walk/ Run for the Nuns.

“I started walking, and then I jogged for a while,” Jean said.

Jean was one of the participants in the 5K Walk/ Run for the Nuns, held in the Thornwood subdivision in South Elgin. This was the first year of the event, part of the Here I am Lord National Vocations Conference, hosted by St. Patrick Parish in St. Charles.

Participants ran on the streets and sidewalks of the subdivision.

Proceeds from the race were split between the religious order of a race participant and the Casa Guadalupe Drug and Rehabilitation Center.

Also participating was Theresa Nagel, of Chicago-based Daughters of St. Mary of Providence. She didn’t feel the need to rush.

“I finished in 55 minutes and was one of the last ones to finish,” Nagel said. “We took our time and walked.”

Nagel said she was glad that temperatures weren’t that chilly.

“It was nice weather,” she said. “It wasn’t too cold.

It wasn’t too bad.”

One didn’t necessarily have to belong to a religious order to participate in the event.

“A lot of the 5K races are charitable events,” Walsh said. “It is a great event to do together.”

With a time of 17 minutes, 26 seconds, Dan Richert, 35, of Hampshire, emerged as the winner of the event, which surprised even him.

“I was just trying to do

One of the biggest challenges of the race, he said, was watching out for ice.

He said he ran with some friends who attend St. Patrick Catholic Church.

“This was my first run of the year,” Richert said.

“I wanted to come and be a part of it.”

DNA testing brings no leads in Geneva murder trial Scientist: Evidence presented Monday did not test positive for Shadwick King

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – None of the DNA tests discussed Monday at a Geneva murder trial were a match for the man charged with the crime.

Shadwick King’s DNA profile was not found on multiple tests conducted on various items of evidence in the murder case, according to Blake Aper, an Illinois State Police Crime Lab forensic scientist. Aper was the last person to testify at the start of the trial’s second

week.

King was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen. He wore a dark red sweater on Monday as he, the attorneys and the jury listened to Aper.

Assistant State’s Attorney Kelli Childress said during the trial prosecutors did not submit the clothes she was wearing or a swab taken from the surface of Kathleen King’s neck for testing. Criminal profiler Mark Safarik said in court Friday it was

his opinion Kathleen King was manually strangled.

Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams did not directly address the neck swab reference, but he had Aper confirm the crime lab was limited by time to complete its testing.

Officials also gave testimony regarding their findings inside the King home, on the 800 block of Oak Street on Geneva’s east side. Kathleen King’s body was found partially resting on railroad tracks less than a half-mile south of the home, according to police. Various forms of identification for Kathleen King were

found in a purse at the home, Geneva Officer Matt Hann said.

This was Hann’s second time on the witness stand, and Shadwick King’s defense lawyers said they were reserving the right to call him to give more testimony at a later time.

Rusty Sullivan, a retired police officer and civilian forensic investigator for the St. Charles Police Department, said a small plate on the bathroom door was found on top of the medicine cabinet, along with recent chipping near the lock.

The trial is scheduled to continue Tuesday morning.

District 304 board to consider $1.3M technology plan

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva District 304 school board members will be considering a proposed $1.3 million technology plan for the 2015-16 school year.

Technology director Elizabeth Janowiak presented a sweeping districtwide plan Monday that encompassed everything from increased wireless coverage to buying $600 portable devices for all 480 sixth-graders to installing a second Internet connection in case the current one goes down.

“Technology is needed to reach our vision,” Janowiak said. “And our vision is created so that our students can learn in a manner that will help them succeed in the society that is their future, not

our past.”

Janowiak cited an article she read in “Forbes” about skills employers identified as the most important for 2015 graduates.

“The top 10 included skills that fit with our vision and the skills that fit with what we are trying to do with technology in our classrooms,” Janowiak said. “Transforming the way they learn and communicate and analyze information.”

Board President Mark Grosso said the board would have to schedule Janowiak to come to a future meeting for an in-depth discussion.

The presentation, which officials said would be available on the district’s website, included a proposal for additional devices for high school students and fourth-grade

students in a combination of existing equipment and new ones, replacing the 1960s sound system in the Mack Olson gym at the high school and continuous training for classroom teachers.

Janowiak also presented options between leasing or buying the equipment for school officials to consider.

TESTING TIME PARCC assessment is being administered in two parts

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com St. Charles School District 303 Superintendent Don Schlomann said he doesn’t need to see this year’s PARCC assessment results to know that they likely won’t be of much use.

PARCC – which stands for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers – replaces the standardized tests students in Illinois have taken for years, the Illinois Standards Achievement Test and the Prairie State Achievement Examination.

Because this is the first year for PARCC, there won’t be a baseline for comparison when evaluating the students’ scores, Schlomann said.

“We won’t be able to say, ‘off of this, we grew,’ or, ‘we declined,’ or ‘we changed in this way,’ ” he said. “There’s not much information to be gained off of this test.”

Unlike the ISAT and the PSAE, PARCC is being administered in two parts: when about 75 percent of the school year is completed and when about 90 percent of the school year is completed.

That time commitment is concerning to educators, Schlomann said.

“For each child,” he said, “we’re losing about two days of instruction in order to give this test.”

Most third- through eighthgrades, as well as some high school students, will be tested statewide.

Other states administering PARCC are Ohio, New Jersey, Colorado, Mississippi, New Mexico and Maryland, according to the PARCC website. The exam also is being given to students in Washington, D.C. The tested subjects are English language arts and math.

Illinois Learning Standards and focuses on students’ mastery of key concepts and their critical thinking and writing skills.

“This test is designed to be more difficult than prior tests,” said Chris Brandt, the executive director for assessment and accountability at District 303.

But State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch said in a statement that students shouldn’t be daunted by the new exam.

While some students might take the test in pencil-and-paper format, others might take the assessment online.

“It seems pretty surreal,” owner Sherie McGowan said.

“I just started renting space, and the rest is history. The first five years, we were downstairs, and then we have both the upstairs and downstairs.

School District 129 answers questions about referendum Residents to vote April 7 on $84.2M bond question

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Residents Monday night had the chance to ask questions about West Aurora School District 129’s $84.2 million building bond referendum that will be on the April 7 ballot.

West Aurora School Superintendent Jeff Craig answered questions during an informational forum at Schneider Elementary School in North Aurora. Voters on April 7 will decide whether West Aurora School District 129 can borrow $84.2 million in bonds to pay for building projects throughout the district, including to North Aurora schools.

As part of the referendum, the district is seeking $25 million of qualified school construction bonds from the state. These type of bonds provide no interest financing for qualified school construction projects, saving the district $21 million over the life of the bonds, officials said.

costs by installing geothermal heating and cooling systems at nine schools, district officials said.

West Aurora officials have said the referendum will not raise the debt portion of the tax bill. To not place any additional burden on the taxpayers, the district is asking to issue the amount of bonds that will keep the annual debt payment at the current $14 million level.

The maximum amount of bonds the district can ask for and keep the debt payment is $90 million. The other part of the tax bill goes to fund the district’s operating budget, which has the potential to increase yearly by inflation.

Other improvements proposed at West Aurora High School include a $4.9 million field house. In addition, the roof at Jewel Middle School in North Aurora would be completely replaced at a cost of $1.9 million.

“It has been leaking like a sieve,” Craig said.

Craig was asked if there was a backup plan if the referendum failed.

“There is no backup plan for $84.2 million worth of improvements,” he said. “It’s a priority situation. We have to make some tough decisions.”

SUGAR GROVE – The Association for Individual Development will host its 16th annual telethon fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove.

About 500 volunteers facilitate the 10-hour broadcast, which includes live performances and testimonials from clients and families AID serves.

The association serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health needs through a variety of programs including housing, employment and transportation. In fiscal 2014, AID served 5,000 children and adults, according to its annual report.

Lego creations draw crowds at Geneva Public Library

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva resident Gil Wukitsch and his two children stared in awe at the medieval city comprised of 400,000 Lego parts.

“It’s unbelievable what they are able to do,” said Wukitsch, describing the creations made by the Northern Illinois Lego Train Club, which were on display Saturday at the Geneva Public Library.

Wukitsch brought his two kids, Grant, 4, and Ava, 6, to the show.

“We were just coming to the library to get some books,” Wukitsch said. “He’s a Lego guy. I’m sure they will be inspired to go home and build some things.”

Hickory Hills resident Dale Klein, a member of the Northern Illinois Lego Train Club, has been working on his medieval city since 2007, and he’s not done yet.

“It takes up my whole garage,” Klein said. “It’s fun.

It’s someplace to let creative juices go. Lego is a great art medium.”

The display contains a castle, which took Klein two years to complete.

Klein said he likes seeing the enjoyment that people get from his display.

“I like talking to people and seeing their jaws hanging open looking at it,” he said.

“How could you not be happy when you see that?”

Also on display was a Lego version of the Kane County Courthouse in downtown Geneva.

The show caught the interest of Elgin resident Joel Fry, 40.

“I’ve been a Lego enthusiast for a long time,” Fry said. “I like to see what other people are doing. It gives me ideas.”

After graduation from high school, she moved to Wichita where she was employed as an Executive Secretary to the President of a major oil company and modeled petite fashions and hosiery on a friend’s television program. She met Randall McAdams in Wichita and they married to begin a life that took them to homes across the country and back, finally settling in St. Charles, IL. Donna was a gifted artist with a love of music and a sense of whimsy that brought beauty into every home that she occupied, and she enjoyed decorating and gardening at her house ‘in the country’ in Campton Township. After seeing their daughters grown & settled, Donna and Randall embarked on many travel adventures, with England, Scotland, Austria, the Carribian & Maui being favorite destinations.

Donna moved to Geneva, IL after the death of her husband and became involved with her church, lending her voice to the Women’s Choir and later found many wonderful friends at the Geneva Senior Center.

Donna is survived by her daughters, Jill (Charles) Hansrote of St. Charles, and Holly Garfield of Elgin; three grandchildren, Meredith (Jodey) Charette, Jay Garfield and Mitchell Garfield; two great-grandchildren, Taryn & Gage Charette;

and her sister, Juanita Jarvis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Randall McAdams.

Bernie came to St. Charles with his wife and daughter in the 1950’s.

With his business partner, he founded St. Charles Stampings, a tool and die business that remains in operation and was a source of pride and focus throughout his life.

Bernie was successful in both business and leisure. Golf was his passion and gave him much pleasure and provided many lasting friendships. He was a member of St. Charles Country Club and Quail Creek Country Club in Naples.

All throughout his life he was a vigorous man and loved life to the fullest. Bernie cherished his friends and family and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty); his daughter, Rita Welch; his son, Dorian; his grandsons, Nicholas Welch and Hayden Klein; two great granddaughters, Betty’s family, and his family in Germany.

“Our goal is to be able to do what we need to do, without asking taxpayers for more money,” said Kane County Board member Brian Pollock, D-Aurora. He is the co-chairman of the Kane County Board Legislative Committee, which organized the event. “We want to live within a property tax levy freeze; we just need a little bit of help.”

State Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, is sponsoring the bill in the Senate, and State Sen. Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles, is the chief co-sponsor. State Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, is the sponsor in the House.

Wheeler said he backs the idea.

“It’s giving Kane County the opportunity to fund a project the way they want to do it, and in a way that doesn’t negatively impact local property taxpayers,” Wheeler said. “I’m very happy to be on board.”

Another bill would repeal a new law that increases jurors’ pay from $10 a day to $25 for the first day of attendance and $50 for each subsequent day. Former Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill into law last year.

“It allows counties to decide if the increased fees are too much for them,” Pollock said. He said the increase would cost the county an extra $250,000 a year, which it

We’re not asking to raise taxes. We’re asking for us to have the opportunity to stop subsidizing that out of our general revenue.”

Talk is cheap THE WASHINGTON POST President Barack Obama in February rolled out a plan to impose stricter rules on brokers and others who help people invest their retirement savings – necessitated, he said, by widespread conflicts of interest that may be costing savers up to $17 billion a year in lost earnings.

The chief targets, Obama said, are financial advisers who base their advice on what’s best for their own compensation rather than on what would maximize returns for their customers.

Such “conflicted advice” is allegedly prevalent in the halftrillion-dollar-a-year business of rolling 401(k) money into individual retirement accounts when people change jobs or retire, the White House said.

The proposed regulations, to be drafted by the Labor Department, would address the issue by imposing on all advisers a fiduciary duty to act in the “best interest” of a client. In contrast, the current system allows some brokers to act based on what’s “suitable” for a client, given such individual client characteristics as age and risk-aversion.

The administration correctly notes that assuring optimal investment is doubly important now that most employers have shifted from defined-benefit pension plans to portable accounts managed by individuals. Obama floated a similar proposal in 2010, only to be defeated by industry and congressional resistance. Then, as now, investment companies objected that consumers already are protected by compensation disclosure rules and that imposing a fiduciary duty would raise brokers’ costs of doing business – which would be passed along to the detriment of small savers.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

As for the administration’s estimate of $17 billion in potential savings, the industry asserts that is based on academic studies that do not accurately measure the difference between advice delivered by fiduciaries and nonfiduciaries – because the dollar value of investment advice is inherently difficult to quantify. The Investment Company Institute also notes that the bulk of IRA money is held in lower-cost mutual funds, contrary to critics’ predictions.

What we have here is a clear and valid principle – investors should receive advice that is in their best interest – that is going to be devilishly difficult to reduce to enforceable regulatory language. And that would be true even if industry were not preparing a lobbying drive.

Obama dismissed concerns that new regulations might drive up costs, saying, “You shouldn’t be in business” if that business is “bilking hardworking Americans.” That merely raises the question of what, exactly, constitutes “bilking.”

An analogy is to the Volcker Rule, the ban on risky proprietary trading by banks that was included in the DoddFrank financial reform bill at the urging of former Federal Reserve chair Paul Volcker.

Easily defined in theory, proprietary trading proved far harder to identify, and ban, in practice. The result was months of bureaucratic trench warfare and hundreds of pages of regulatory boilerplate in which exemptions swallowed much of the prohibition.

The precise text of Obama’s proposed fiduciary standard for investment professionals won’t emerge from an internal White House vetting process for up to three months. Only then will it start to become clear whether his lofty promises can translate into workable policy.

cost-effective and provides taxpayers with a significant return on investment as evidenced by: • Illinois ranks 49th in the nation in Medicaid spending per enrollee – substantially lower than all other Midwestern states and large states such as New York (second) and Pennsylvania (seventh); • Seventy-five percent of Medicaid payments to Illinois hospitals are from nonstate sources; • Through federal matching funds and a hospital tax, hospitals and health systems provide $400 million in additional funding to nonhospital

providers, such as community clinics and nursing homes; • Every hospital job supports 1.25 additional jobs for our local economies.

‘Jump in and leave it all out there’ St. Charles North’s Myhre channels confidence as sprinter

T. CHARLES – Joe Myhre shifted into sprint mode for his junior boys swimming season at St. Charles North.

Naturally, that triggered added urgency in his approach, yet still added time to Myhre’s suddenly singular mental preparation.

“In a sprint race, there’s really no room for error, you know, because if you miss your wall, that kind of determines the end of the race,” he said. “The start has to be on key and everything. That’s not so much for, say, the 500 (yard) freestyle, where if you miss your wall, you can kind of bounce back from that while you swim. In the 50 free, it’s 100 percent technique.”

Myhre mastered that mindset as the Kane County Chronicle Boys Swimmer of the Year, earning four medals at last month’s IHSA state meet at New Trier.

During prelims, he set a school record in the 50 free with a field-leading mark of 20.55. The next day, his fifth-place swim in the 100 free finals also established a North best, 40.62.

A budding program fixture in his second season since moving from Indiana, Myhre also showed he could swim well with others.

He collaborated with Stephan Hutchinson, Nathan Bawolek and anchor Ben Sherman on a school-record clocking of 1:24.61 in the 200 free relay preliminaries.

That quartet took fifth in finals and was 12th in the 400 free relay.

“Thinking back on it, I thought it was a really, really good season,” Myhre said.

“A lot better than last year.”

North finished 34th as a team at the 2014 state meet, with Myhre helping score points as part of the 10th-place 200 free relay. He missed individual prelim cuts in the 100 and 200 free, however, just two of a handful of what-ifs for the program that weekend.

“Last year’s group was (about) getting there to state,” North Stars coach Rob Rooney said. “This year’s group, the same group, was, ‘OK, let’s get through and swim on Saturday.’ And now they’ve learned how to swim on Saturday.”

Indeed. North tied Wheaton North for 10th thanks in no small part to Myhre, who rebounded from a sixth-place finish (20.99) in the 50 free, his first finals race, after a shaky flip turn prompted less-thansmooth contact with the wall.

During preseason, Rooney called Myhre talented enough to compete for a state title. The key as he saw it: Keeping him relaxed.

“This year, I decided just to jump in and leave it all out there,” Myhre said.

“Not think about anything. Just swim.”

Myhre’s 2014 repertoire largely consisted of the 100 and 200 free and the corresponding relays. Last summer, while tinkering with sprint starts and techniques for the St. Charles Swim Team club, he determined he’d try a new discipline as a North junior.

His sets, in turn, grew more technique-based, focusing differently on his entry, breakout and staying in the right line.

At finals, as the relay welcomed Myhre and his two individual medals to the fold

for the closing stages of the meet, the training paid dividends.

“We’ve probably got 100,000 yards more than anybody else here,” Sherman said. “Probably not, really, but it feels like it.”

Myhre took a few days away from the pool before preparing for the Illinois Swimming, Inc. senior championships at Illinois-Chicago this past weekend.

When he returned to North’s deck, Myhre noticed Rooney wasted no time in updating the school records.

“It’s pretty darn cool, to be on the same board as Chris Peterson and Kyle Gannon and all those guys,” Myhre said. “It’s really cool just to be up there with all those guys who have been really successful in swimming. They’ve gone on to college and done great things there, and that’s something I definitely want to do, as well.”

Geneva track fundraiser a 24-hour affair Geneva switched its boys and girls track fundraiser to a biennial event because, girls coach Peter Raak said, “it could get a little stale.”

Don’t worry. That won’t be the inherent risk for the Vikings at Friday’s “24-Hour Run,” even though the name may suggest it.

Student-athletes will only traverse Geneva’s indoor track in separate, four-hour intervals, 12 hours apart. For instance, if he or she begins running when the event starts at 4 p.m. Friday, it will be the athlete’s turn to run again from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Saturday.

Co-ed groups participate as platoons, handing off batons while the runners-in-waiting enjoy movies, music and food.

“Being at the school at odd hours is kind of a treat for them,” Raak said. “They definitely look forward to the team bonding aspect of it, which is a big part of it, as well.”

No matter the time, the

goal remains to generate income for equipment and expenses. The Vikings were required to seek pledges from the community – either as a flat rate or on an a-mile basis. The goal rate is $1 a mile, and the athletes reaching that quota will receive rewards.

In addition to getting to crash the next day, that is.

Geneva last held the run in 2013.

The program will donate 10 percent of its Peter Raak proceeds to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

“Half the girls and boys have not done this because only juniors and seniors have done this before,” Raak said. “And a lot of our team is freshmen and sophomores this year, so this is brand new for a lot of them.”

Palmer Cup particulars: The Golf Coaches Association of America last week released the first rankings for the 2015 Palmer Cup, a collegiate variation of the Ryder Cup to be held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove from June 12 to 14.

The top 10 college golfers from the United States will compete against their 10 best counterparts from Europe, with the final rosters to be

“It was a good comeback, but unfortunately we could [not] come back [further] in the game,” said Kurtzhals, a St. Charles North junior. “I think we all gave our all and had a lot of fun.”

The Warriors added a pair of goals minutes later and Harris scored with 7:45 to play in the second to make the lead 5-1 before heading to the third.

Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen knew the challenges his team would face with a short bench going against a powerhouse in Waubonsie.

But puck luck played a factor as well, aiding the Warriors in the second period.

“The start was great,” Gabrielsen said. “When we cut it to 2-1, I was saying to myself, ‘You know what, we can keep this up,’ and then it seemed like every bounce, everything went their way. But you have to create your luck and they’re good. They’re a good team.

There’s nothing for us to hold our heads down about.”

Jackson Kozari added the sixth and final goal for the Warriors at the 11:19 mark of the third period.

The Warriors had 16 shots in the third, enabling Karkos to make 15 more of his 41 saves in the contest.

“It was pretty exhausting,” Karkos said after taking the barrage. “You take everything you have and put it all out on the ice because you know that if you don’t, your season is going to be over.”

Gabrielsen reflected on the stellar performance his goaltender had this season and his ability to keep the Hawks in the game with Waubonsie for a time.

“Aaron was phenomenal,” Gabrielsen said. “There was a reason he was an All-Star goalie and should have been considered in high regard, but our league doesn’t get any respect in the state, so we get what we get. You’ve got to love that the kid busted his tail. He was keeping us in it as long as he could.”

The Hawks, a combined team pulling from North, St. Charles East, Batavia, Geneva and Kaneland, will lose five seniors from their 13-man roster and were playing their first season together as a varsity program.

“As a first-year varisty club, we really didn’t come in with much experience,” Kurtzhals said. “We really had a great group that bonded really well, regardless of the schools we came from.”

The 20 wins were significant, Gabrielsen said, especially because of the challenges of players working with different school schedules for practice times.

“If you told me that in Sep-

tember, I’d say you’re nuts,” he said of the team’s record.

“If you told me we’d play Waubonsie in March and we’d play them in a 6-1 game, I’d still say you’re nuts. They beat us 11-0 in the spring and they’ve handled teams pretty well.

“What I’m impressed about is I’ve got 13 guys. None of them gave up, none of them quit; they just wanted to keep fighting. We had all of the seniors out at the end.”

With the juniors leading the way in the postseason, getting playoff experience in its first season will certainly help Fox Valley moving forward.

“It’s really good experience to have made it into the playoffs and obviously played a team that outmanned us, and going into that knowing that, it’s good to have that experience under your belt,” Karkos said.

The game, which was slated for a 7:40 p.m. start, was delayed until 8:50 because of a scheduling problem, with the teams being moved from one arena to another.

The coaches were not notified until just a few hours before, and were not given any definite time for when they would start play.

In four years in the NFL, all with Baltimore, McPhee has started only six games, all in 2012 while Terrell Suggs recovered from a torn Achilles. Last season’s 540 snaps are the most he’s ever played in a season but were only 47.5 percent of the Ravens’ total snaps on defense.

He is 26 years old and

won’t turn 27 until December, but McPhee has had trouble with both knees throughout his career.

Like Houston, McPhee has played end and outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme and has played some end in a 40-front.

Last season, the Bears spent $35 million on a failed bet that Houston could be a factor moving from a 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme.

This year, they’re betting $40 million that McPhee can make the leap from situational pass rusher and career backup to full-time impact player.

Here is the huge difference between McPhee and Houston: McPhee is an excellent pure pass rusher, while Houston had shown no rush

skills at all.

If he can stay healthy, McPhee seems a safe bet to be a double-digit sack guy who will be able to put a hand on the ground at end or play inside or outside at linebacker, giving him the versatility coordinator Vic Fangio loves in his 3-4 defenders.

That is why McPhee seems to be worth rolling the dice on in the first major acquisition of the Ryan Pace regime.

BENSENVILLE – After a season full of overcoming obstacles, the Fox Valley Hawks boys hockey team finally met one they couldn’t hurdle over Saturday night in the second round of the 2015 AHAI Illinois state hockey championships.

Fox Valley had its season come to an end in a 6-1 defeat against the defending champion Waubonsie Warriors.

Trevor Kurtzhals had the lone goal for the Hawks, who were outshot, 47-11, and were unable to register a shot on goal in the third period.

The Hawks (20-5) kept Waubonsie off the scoreboard for the majority of the first period, despite being outshot, 10-3.

But Warriors center Cole Harris found himself all alone in front of the net with 3:59 to play in the period, beating Hawks goaltender Aaron Karkos high glove side to break the deadlock.

Waubonsie doubled the lead 1:06 into the second period when Adrian Ressing took a feed from Evan Pike and slipped one past Karkos.

Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29, 1832. She was the second oldest of four girls. Her love of her sisters helped her to become one of America’s most beloved children’s book authors.

Louisa’s family did not have much money. To help out, Louisa started taking on as many jobs as a young girl could find. She read for an elderly man and his sister.

Louisa and her sister Anna taught young children and mended and washed laundry.

In 1852, Louisa’s first poem was published in a magazine, and she made her first money from writing.

As a child, Louisa and her family moved to Boston, Massachusetts where her father, Amos Alcott, set up a school based upon his beliefs about education.

In 1855, her first book, Flower Fables was published.

Her publisher, Thomas Niles, asked that she write “a girl’s story.” Having spent her life with three interesting sisters, Louisa wrote Little Women based on her own experiences.

The novel, published in 1868, was an instant success.

In 1862, Louisa went to Washington, D.C. to serve as a Civil War nurse. Like many other nurses, Louisa contracted typhoid fever. Although she got better, mercury in the medicine caused her suffering for the rest of her life. In Washington, Louisa continued to write and she published two more books.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Dolls rarely look like real babies or children. Today there are dolls with over-sized heads, exaggerated bodies, or monster or cartoon shapes.

There were many earlier dolls that had unusual features or expressions.

Googly-eyed dolls were popular in the 1920s. One type was made under the 1927 copyright of Oscar Hitt, an American illustrator and cartoonist.

Some of his characters were turned into dolls by George Borgfeldt in Germany. The bisque head has a flanged neck. The face has side-glancing eyes with thick dark eyeliner and curly eye lashes, a very tiny nose and either painted hair or a wig. These dolls are very rare and one sold in January 2015 at a Theriault’s auction in Annapolis, Maryland, for $23,940. *** Q: I recently bought a dining-room set that includes an octagonal table, six chairs, and a buffet. The buffet has two drawers over four louvered doors.

The owner said the set is oak and belonged to her mother fifty years ago.

Inside the buffet drawers it indicates it was made by A. Brandt of Ft. Worth, Texas. Can you tell me something about the maker and age of this set?

A: August Brandt founded A. Brandt Company in 1900. The family sold the company in 1986. It went out of business and the remaining inventory was auctioned off in 1988. The company’s popular Ranch Oak line of furniture carved with western designs was introduced in 1938. It was sold nationwide and also was made for

A: Lady Head vases, usually showing a pretty woman from the shoulders up, were used by florists primarily in the 1950s and 1960s. They are often decorated with imitation jewelry and other accessories. They became a “must-have” for a few years -books were written, clubs formed and prices went up. Then the collectors lost interest and prices fell to the present low level. Most head vases were made in Japan and the United States. Lady Head vases of a famous person or with imitation jewelry or other added accessories sell for the highest prices.

Common lady head vases sell for $25 or less, while a Jackie Kennedy lady head vase has sold for over $100. *** Q: I recently restored a 150-yearold Italianate home. It has a pair of brass and metal gas-powered chandeliers made by Christian Cornelius of Philadelphia. Each has six glass globes. They are original to the house.

All my antiques friends have given their opinions as to the value, but I’d like to get your expert advice.

A: Christian Cornelius was a Dutch silversmith who immigrated to the United States in 1783. He began making lamps in 1825 and started Cornelius & Co. with his son in 1827. It became the largest manufacturer of lighting in the U.S. Christian died in 1851. The company was run by family members under various names until 1900. Lighting fixtures made by Cornelius & Co. and its successors were used in many state capitol buildings in “BEST IN THE MIDWEST OR ANYWHERE”

The value of yours would also depend on its condition. *** Q: When my father moved into his house in 1957, he discovered the previous owner, a physician, left an old examining table. I think the table was old even then. It’s made of wood. One side of the tabletop can be lifted up to serve as a backrest, and there are stirrups that can be extended from the other end. A shelf is below the top, close to the floor. It is labeled, “W.D. Allison Co., Indianapolis, Ind.” Is the table of any value?

A: W.D. Allison Co. started out as G.H. Clark & Co. in 1882. Its name became W.D. Allison in 1893. The company became a large manufacturer of medical and dental chairs, tables, cabinets, bookcases, instrument tables and wheelchairs. Allison grew to have branches in New York, Chicago, St. Louis and San Francisco.

Non-drug therapies can relieve menstrual pain Dear Doctor K: Can you recommend drug-free ways to relieve menstrual pain and cramping?

Dear Reader: For most women, menstruation is accompanied, at one time or another, by pain and cramping known as dysmenorrhea. For some women, the pain is so severe that it causes them to miss work and social events. Some doctors don’t regard menstrual pain as a “serious” problem. But any symptom that interferes with your personal or work life needs to be attended to and not dismissed.

The cause of menstrual pain appears to be overproduction of the chemicals known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are shed with the lining of the uterus during a woman’s period. High levels can cause painful contractions in the uterus.

A combination of one or more of the following non-drug therapies should help relieve your menstrual pain: • Heat. Applying heat to the stomach or back may provide temporary relief of pelvic pain.

You can use a heating pad, a thermal pack or a hot water bottle. Or try a hot shower or bath.

• Herbal preparations. Fennel and ginger preparations may be effective when taken as needed for menstrual symptoms.

Chinese herbalists some-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff times recommend preparations containing angelica root, fennel and cinnamon bark, among other herbs. These are taken on the days you feel pain. A review of 39 trials involving close to 3,500 women found significant reduction of pain and overall symptoms with Chinese herbs compared with drug treatments. However, the studies analyzed in this trial were generally of small size and poor quality.

• Supplements. Vitamin E, taken before your period starts, and then during the first three days of menstruation, has been shown to reduce the pain and severity of dysmenorrhea. It likely works by reducing the production of prostaglandins. Vitamin B1 may also help.

• Acupuncture. There is limited but promising evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture for menstrual pain. The acupuncture sites that usually are stimulated for dysmenorrhea include above the ankle, the upper part of the foot, and the fleshy skin between the thumb and forefinger. Why should stimulating these parts of

the body that are distant from the uterus relieve menstrual pain?

I don’t understand the theory behind acupuncture well enough to answer.

• Relaxation techniques. Progressive muscle relaxation, mindfulness meditation and biofeedback are examples of relaxation techniques. They can have a calming effect when you have menstrual pain.

Progressive muscle relaxation focuses on relaxing your muscles in sequence from the tips of your toes up to the top of your head or vice versa. Begin by curling your toes, holding them tight, holding them tighter still, and then releasing them. Then move on to contracting and releasing the muscles around your ankles, calves, knees, buttocks, hands, etc. Tighten muscles as you inhale and relax them as you exhale.

So, there are approaches other than medicines to relieve menstrual pain. However, if they don’t give you adequate relief, don’t reject medicines altogether.

They really can help, and the side effects are infrequent.

Food in Poland is excellent Dr. Wallace: My mom was born in Poland, but she hasn’t returned since she left when she was only 13. My parents will be going to Poland for a month this summer to visit Mom’s relatives and to sightsee. They want me to go with them, but they said I could stay home with my grandma if I didn’t want to go. I love my grandma and I’ve stayed with her for a couple weeks before, so I’m fine with that.

However, I’m having trouble making my decision because I’m not sure if I want to miss the trip with my parents.

I have a boyfriend and I really like him. He said he hopes I won’t go because he wants us to have fun this summer and he thinks it would be a miserable summer for him without me.

We have been looking at deals in which knowledge of some percentages would have aided declarer. However, sometimes card reading is more valuable than odds. Also, what did not happen can be more revealing that what did occur.

In this deal, South opens one spade in the fourth position. Then, after North raises to two spades, South adds three points for his singleton and jumps to game. (He also has only five losers, which is the number for a game-bid.) West leads the club jack. How should declarer read the deal?

South starts with three top losers: two hearts and one club.

He must play the trump suit without loss. Taken in isolation, the finesse is a much better bet (50 percent) than trying to drop a singleton king offside (only 6.2 percent). But how do the bidding and opening lead affect these odds?

When West leads the club jack, it marks East with the ace and queen. (West would not have led the suit from an A-J-10 holding, and would have started with the queen if holding the queen and jack.)

Also, that lead marks East with at least one high heart honor, because if West had the heart aceking, he would have led that ace, not the club jack.

So East is marked with at least nine points in hearts and clubs.

If he also held the spade king, he would have opened the bidding.

South should ruff the second club trick and cash his spade ace.

It’s his only chance.
