New Alexander’s Cafe planning summer opening in St. Charles

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A family that operates multiple restaurants across several western suburbs plans to bring new life to a shuttered St. Charles eatery.

Bob Karas – whose family owns the Village Squire Restaurants, Rookies All-American Pub and Grill and Alexander’s Cafe – said there are plans to open a second Alexander’s Cafe at the former Gabby’s Kitchen property by early summer.

Unlike the cafe’s Elgin site, the St. Charles property will serve only breakfast and lunch, Karas said. He said the lunch menu will include such fare as meatloaf, pot roast and a fish fry on Friday.

“I hope we do well,” he said.

W. Main St., closed in 2014 after more than four years of serving homestyle cooking.

According to Kane County records, the property was purchased for $750,000.

Karas said the appeal of the site was more about the town, as his family has operated Rookies at 1545 W. Main St. since 1998. St. Charles needs more breakfast places, he said.

Although the building could reopen as is, Karas said his team – his partners are Aleko Karas and Nick Smith – wants to give it a new look. He noted the store in Elgin underwent a renovation three years ago.

self as a driving force behind several expansions, said his father and uncle opened the first Village Squire in 1974.

He acknowledged that food service is a challenging business.

Kane County could see 2-4 inches of snow

asloboda@shawmedia.com Weather forecasts midday Monday indicated Kane County has the potential to miss the heaviest snow in a system developing overnight into Tuesday.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Kane County that was to run through 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Kevin Donofrio, a meteorologist with the agency, said a mix of rain and sleet was expected Monday evening and should transition overnight to a “band of fairly heavy snow” that could result in excess of 6 inches where it sets up.

Early indications showed Kane County likely will be south of the heaviest snow overnight, he said.

The advisory for Kane County placed snow accumulation between 2 and 4 inches late Monday through Tuesday morning.

Doughnut drive-thru plan faces challenge Supermajority of Batavia council needed for approval

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – At least half of the members of the Batavia City Council are leaning in favor of plans for a Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru lane at a downtown gasoline station.

But a supermajority of 10 out of the 14 aldermen will be needed to gain approval, because the Batavia Zoning Board of Appeals voted against two key variances for the project, said Joel Strassman, the city’s planning and zoning officer.

The owner of the Shell of Batavia station at 108 N. Batavia Ave. wants to lease a portion of his building to Dunkin’ Donuts, which would operate a drive-thru lane and walk-up counter.

Aldermen will bite into the doughnut proposal at their Committee of the Whole meeting at 7:30 p.m. today at the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia.

In January, the Batavia Plan Commission voted against the proposal, recommending denial of a conditional use permit for the project.

More critically, the Batavia Zoning Board of Appeals rejected variances to the city’s requirements that

a drive-thru lane be at least 100 feet from a residential property, and that a business property with a drive-thru be at least 50 feet from a residential property.

This means a two-thirds majority of the council will be needed to approve the variances, Strassman said.

The same group of individuals constitutes both the zoning board and plan commission, but they operate as two separate boards, although meeting and acting simultaneously.

The planners also objected to the narrow width and tight turning radius for the drive-thru lane.

Yet the main issue seems to be the two-flat residential property at 118 N. Batavia Ave., which borders the gas station on the north, and which caused the zoning board to vote against the variances.

Rental property owner John Warwick, along with other nearby residents, are objecting to the drive-thru plan, arguing that it would create traffic, noise and litter problems.

The Shell station is in the city’s 5th Ward, and both of the aldermen representing that ward – Lucy Thelin Atac and Kevin Botterman – said they generally are in favor of

Five other aldermen already have signaled their support as well, including 2nd Ward Alderman Martin Callahan, 3rd Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann, 4th Ward Alderman Paula Mueller, 6th Ward Alderman Nicholas Cerone and 7th Ward Alderman Drew McFadden.

Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit, however, said he is opposed to the plan, arguing that the station is simply the wrong place for a drive-thru facility.

Shell station owner Harry Mehta contends that with a decline in fuel sales, he needs another way to generate customers and revenue.

The station is at the northeast corner of Route 31 and Houston Street on a piece of property that slopes toward the Fox River.

The drive-thru lane would direct vehicles east along the south side of the property, and then turning north and proceeding on the east side of the building to the service window. Vehicles would turn left once more, heading west along the north side of the property near the next-door residential property, to the exit.

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Brian and Kelly Flosi of St. Charles watched as their children bounced up and down in a harness, landing softly on an inflated landing pad before going airborne again.

“It was fun,” said their daughter, Alexis, 11, after their ride was over. Then she and her brother, Zachary, 8, were off to the next attraction.

And there was plenty more to do Sunday at the Chicago Family Palooza at Pheasant Run in St. Charles.

The two-day weekend event featured a 51,000-squarefoot indoor playground with attractions such as a zip line, rock climbing wall and miniature golf.

Brian Flosi said he liked how it was close to home.

“And they have fun,” Brian Flosi said.

Attractions were for all ages, including 18-month-old Cormac McTee of Schaumburg. His parents, Chris and Lisa McTee, had just gotten off the kiddie train with their son.

Plainfield resident Zoraida Reid and her son, Nick, 15, said they waited an hour and 10 minutes before they could both do the zip line.

“But it was worth it,” Zoraida Reid said.

Zoraida Reid came with her friend, Wheaton resident Nanine Blackwell, and her son, Aidan, 12, but both of them decided against the zip line – this time.

“Maybe next year,” Blackwell said.

Club’s goal: ‘We want to make Kaneland the greenest school in the state’

alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Earlier this year, four Kaneland High School students spoke at a school board meeting, identifying themselves as the Brighter Future Club.

The students, who appeared at the meeting with Andy Franklin, a counselor at the school, told Kaneland School District 302 officials and board members of plans to help the district’s energy conservation efforts.

Board members were receptive. Recently, there had been talk of the district’s deal with energy conservation company Cenergistic, and how the company had not been reaching out to students to the extent that district officials expected. Brighter Future Club members – Katie Huber, Jake Obremski, Michael Petrik and Julia Schaefer – spoke of thinking big. For instance, one idea brought up was perhaps having a windmill or wind turbine installed.

“We want to make Kaneland the greenest school in the state,” Franklin said.

Club members recently met with Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs.

“I felt that the students did a great job presenting their ideas, and I look forward to working with them, along with our energy-savings company Cenergistic, to continue to make progress toward energy savings in the school district,” Fuchs said. “This is a perfect complement to each program.

By working together, I believe we will be able to accomplish more by having both groups work together.”

The Brighter Future Club has launched its first fundraising project, a collection effort with www.usagain. com. Another project would have club members seeking businesses to sponsor classrooms to have energy-efficient lightbulbs purchased. The club would provide businesses with information about how much energy was saved.

Students involved are part of a group called Living My Dream. They attended a conference and became inspired to do more.

“We just wanted to be more than just recycling,” Schaefer said. “Every school has recycling. That’s good and all, but that’s not going to save the environment. You’ve got to think bigger.”

“We want to make sure that when we have more members, that we interview them so they have the right mindset,” Huber said. “We don’t want someone who is not going to do the work.”

Members said the major projects will take time. Petrik, a junior, said he wouldn’t plan on having everything completed by the time he graduates from high school. But members said some projects could be done.

“We are trying to take it one step at a time,” Obremski said. “Of course, we want to focus on our end goal. But, at the same time, we want to focus on our small goals.”

The planned project lies entirely within Kane County and would stretch from Huntley Road to Route 62 in Barrington Hills and add another Fox River bridge crossing that will require a toll to cross. The road will pass through Algonquin, Carpentersville and Barrington Hills, as well as unincorporated Kane County.

ALGONQUIN – After Algonquin officials voted to complete a planned transfer of land to Kane County, local lawmakers touted the progress of the long-planned Longmeadow Parkway corridor project at a groundbreaking ceremony Monday morning.

Officials from Algonquin, Carpentersville and Kane County were among those who spoke at Ganek Municipal Center, lauding the officials who had collaborated to bring the planned $115 million, 5.6-mile four-lane road closer to fruition.

While acknowledging opposition to the project – which led Barrington Hills to withdraw support last summer after initially supporting the road – officials touted the corridor as a necessary piece of infrastructure to address future growth.

The first phase of the project, which extends from the intersection of Huntley and Boyer roads to just west of Randall Road, is set for a spring groundbreaking, even though there will be an advisory Dundee Township referendum in the upcoming election asking whether public officials should support the project.

“With the growth we’re going to see in the next 20 years, we’re going to need this transportation corridor,” Algonquin Village President John Schmitt said. “If people expect us to be able to provide the services we’re providing now without increasing taxes, we need to build commerce. We need to build infrastructure to build commerce.”

Sanders campaign office opens in Batavia More online

bschory@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Every time a phone bank volunteer for Bernie Sanders’ Batavia campaign office gets a positive response, a bicycle horn celebrates with a squeaky toot.

With Illinois’ primary election two weeks away on March 15, the Bernie Sanders for President office, serving Kane and Kendall counties, opened Tuesday at 144 W. Wilson St., Batavia, in a strip mall between East China Inn and Crown Liquors.

Open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, volunteers on phone banks were hustling support Sunday afternoon, keeping tallies of “yes” for Sanders, “yes” for Hillary Clinton and undecided, volunteer Jennifer DuBose of Batavia said.

DuBose writes the “Tales from the Motherhood” column for the Kane County Chronicle.

Sanders and Clinton are vying for the Democratic nomination for the presidential race. The winner moves on to the November general election.

The phone bank was churning out calls, while DuBose welcomed each new group of supporters as they came in.

“We set up shop Monday and started phone banking right away,” DuBose said. “We have a lot of folks in the community who are really generous. Clinton brings it to Trump, has best night of campaign

When Hillary Clinton started speaking Saturday night, it sounded as though she would give a clunker of a victory speech. Instead, it turned into one of the strongest speeches she has delivered all campaign – and a hint of what to expect from her in the general election.

CNN wasted no time calling the South Carolina primary for her the moment the polls closed, and she wasted no time reverting to the studied delivery she often uses, a manner that seems to communicate nothing more than, “I am a politician speaking to you.” At one point, she seemed to boast that she has many small donors behind her, but it turned out to be a solicitation for more donations.

But the longer her speech went, the better it got. Clinton began talking about the mothers of African-Americans who died in high-profile cases, cases such as the ones involving Trayvon Martin and Sandra Bland. She focused on the grief their parents felt. Most people, no matter what they think about these cases, can respect the power of that emotion.

It turned out that Clinton wanted to do more than simply appeal to the African-American voters who gave her a sweeping victory in South Carolina. She weaved the mothers’ experiences into a positive narrative about American unity. “They have not been broken and embittered,” she said.

“Instead, they have channeled their sorrow into a strategy and their mourning into a movement.”

Clinton turned to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, a scandalous failure of government that deserves much more attention than most of the nonsense that has passed for debate over the last couple of days on the GOP campaign trail. Clinton offered the requisite condemnations. But instead of reveling in anger over the disaster, she returned to her theme of goodwill and possibility, noting that Americans have mobilized to help Flint residents.

“We know there are many other Flints out there,” Clinton said. But, she added, “our country was built by people who had each other’s backs,” insisting that Americans must “trust and respect each other, despite all that divides us.”

“I know it sometimes seems a little odd for someone running for president these days in this time to say we need more love and kindness in America. But I’m telling you from the bottom of my heart, we do. We do. We have so much to look forward to. There is no doubt in my mind that America’s best years can be ahead of us. We have got to believe that. We have to work for that. We have to stand with each other. We have to hold each other up, lift each other up,” she concluded.

This was a direct attack on Donald Trump and the Republicans’ cesspool of a presidential race. While Trump racks up primary wins by insisting that the country is adrift, denigrating seemingly everyone around him and turning the Republican campaign into little more than an insult-lobbing contest, Clinton argues that the country might do better if it were not intractably divided, when not every interaction is seen as zero-sum and people are occasionally willing to give others the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps this would be a more appealing strategy than pummeling the other side and expecting the political system to bend your way.

Clinton is not the first politician to talk about unity and American potential. But in the current political context, her words seem much more remarkable than they should be.

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – If the opening game of the IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional between the St. Charles North and Bartlett boys basketball teams is any indication for the rest of the week, let the madness begin.

North couldn’t help but think back to Jan. 30, when it took on St. Charles East. Leading as the other team had the ball, the North Stars lost on a buzzer beater. On Monday, the North Stars finally exhaled after a last-second shot, as Bartlett point guard Benjamin Reyes’ 3-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer as North held on for a 63-60 victory.

With the win, North (8-15) advanced to today’s semifinal against top-seeded Batavia.

“You can’t help but think about that stuff on a last-second shot like that,” North senior guard Mikey Schroeder said. “It happened a couple times this year, but we finally got one to go our way. I think we’re rolling now. We’ve battled through adversity and lost games in every way you can this year.

It’s really nice to get this win in a game that means this much.”

Schroeder had one of his best games of the season, a 24-point effort including a 7-for-7 effort from the free-throw line. Schroeder and fellow senior Jarod Karom each made two free throws in the final minute to help North build a three-point lead before Bartlett’s lastgasp attempt.

For a North team that indeed has battled the adversity Schroeder referenced, it looked to have one of those lapses it had grown accustomed to, allowing games to slip away for much of the season.

After Schroeder made two free throws with 6:19 left in the game to give the North Stars a 55-47 lead, the Hawks scored the game’s next 13 points to take a five-point advantage with three minutes left, forcing a timeout from North coach Tom Poulin.

“The guys have been told, ‘You can’t do this, you can’t do that,’ all season,” Poulin said. “We’ve been doubted as a group, but these kids continue to believe and continue to work hard. Sometimes when you don’t see the results from working hard, you don’t want to give that effort. But these kids have never stopped, and that’s when you see the character of the group you have.

Bartlett (18-11) did not score after that North timeout. Back-to-back buckets by sophomore forward Kyle King brought North within one before Schroeder and Karom got to the free-throw line in the final minute as both teams entered the fourth quarter in the bonus.

Seconds before Karom’s two free throws that gave North its final margin of victory, Bartlett’s Jason Hasenberg was called for an offensive foul while driving to the basket. The official on the baseline made an emphatic motion saying Hasenberg hooked the defender to gain an advantage.

The win re-emphasized to the North Stars that they can win close games.

“It shows how far we have come,” Karom said. “It got out of hand on that run they made a little bit, but we stayed

resilient. It was a hard-fought victory.

We’re playing really good basketball right now.”

North gets a third shot at Batavia at 7 p.m. today, and looks to avenge a pair of regular-season losses to the Upstate Eight Conference River Division champion. Batavia won by 14 points (63-49 on Jan. 22) and six (62-56 on Dec. 4).

There’s no denying tonight’s matchup holds the ultimate implications.

“We know each other very well, obviously,” Poulin said. “We certainly have our hands full, but I think these kids are ready for the challenge. We didn’t look past tonight’s game and now we get our shot. They do a fantastic job over there and are conference champs for a reason. We’ll worry about us and let everything play out from there.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys basketball team has lived and died by the 3-pointer for a number of years.

In the first half of Monday’s 51-36 win against Streamwood in an IHSA Class 4A St. Charles East Regional quarterfinal, the Saints had a hard time developing a rhythm offensively.

East led the Sabres by just one, 21-20, at the break.

The Saints opened up their lead to 35-28 after the third quarter despite a 2-of-11 effort from behind the arc. (For more on the game, log on to kcchronicle.com/preps.)

The Saints had five players – J.T. Ford, Zach Mitchell, Justin Hardy, Evan DiLeonardi and Zach Hondlik – with at least five points after three quarters, as well, in a quite-balanced scoring attack.

Mitchell and Ford were the two East players to make a shot from 3-point range, but the Saints’ defense kept them ahead, allowing just eight points in the third quarter.

Although East stayed ahead, Streamwood’s Joey O’Halloran had four 3-pointers by himself before the fourth quarter.

One thing that excited DiLeonardi, a senior guard, about the beginning of the postseason was that even though the Saints hosted senior night on the final regular-season home game, the team was guaranteed at least one more game on its home court.

“It’s like our own little conference tournament here,” DiLeonardi said.

“It’s cool to be on our home court with an atmosphere at our advantage, but all of these teams travel well, so it’ll be both interesting and exciting.”

East advanced to face the regional’s No. 2 seed, Geneva, on Wednesday.

East split with the Vikings during the Upstate Eight Conference River Division regular season, with each team winning on the road. Geneva lost at the buzzer at Streamwood early in the conference season before cruising to a 57-33 win over the Sabres on Jan. 22.

St. Charles North won the night’s first semifinal, 63-60, over Bartlett, doing its part to set up an all Tri-Cities semifinals to guarantee a potential all-Tri-Cities regional championship Friday night.

St. Charles North softball springs into action early QUICK READ Kevin Druley Daylight Saving Time descends upon us March 13, and the early clubhouse leader for the group most in need of the extra hour is the St. Charles North softball team.

North held its first tryout workouts from 5:30 to 7 a.m. Monday as spring sports practices began for seven IHSA sports – badminton, baseball, boys tennis, boys and girls water polo, girls soccer and softball.

North Stars pitchers and catchers were scheduled for an afterschool session, as well, but the early bird practice was for players at all levels.

Call it an inadvertent team bonding exercise. And a boon for Tom Poulin’s busy schedule; he coaches North softball and boys basketball, the latter of which opened its Class 4A postseason run at the St. Charles East Regional on Monday night.

Boys volleyball practices begin March 7, the same day boys and girls water polo teams are eligible for the first games of the season. Games for other spring sports begin March 14

‘Big change’ spurs Kedzie: Confidence. Victories. Muscle tone.

In no particular order, those were things that escalated for Kaneland junior 106-pound wrestler Austin Kedzie this season, paving the way for a runner-up finish as the Class 2A

state tournament concluded Feb. 21 Kedzie’s impression on his teammates also grew, and not just because he drew more eyeballs as the last Knight remaining in the tournament at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign.

“He’s made a big change this year,” said Kaneland 170-pounder Riley Vanik, a fellow state qualifier.

“The past couple years, he’s been a lit-

tle undersized. He hasn’t been able to make the weight since he’s so small.

This year, there’s a lot of confidence.

I think something clicked in his head that he could put up with these kids.

He’s a true 106-pounder. He has the technique. He’s just going out there and competing now.”

Brooks is back ... sort of: The Cubs remain aligned with South Bend as Class-A, Midwest League player-development contract partners, but that agreement has little bearing on operations at the major league level.

To that end, former Cougars right-hander Aaron Brooks joined the Cubs as part of last week’s trade that sent outfielder Chris Coghlan to the Oakland Athletics. Both the Cubs and A’s are former Cougars parent clubs, as are the Kansas City Royals, who drafted Brooks in the ninth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. One year later, Brooks made 27 starts with the Cougars, going 9-12 with a 4.98 ERA and 120 strikeouts over 1532/3 innings.

Myhre leaves legacy with title St. Charles North senior wins 100 freestyle state crown

ccasey@shawmedia.com EVANSTON – Joe Myhre has exemplified what it means to be a St. Charles North boys swimmer.

He has gone about his business for the last four years, ensuring fans at last weekend’s IHSA boys swimming and diving state meet knew the name Joe Myhre.

Myhre added to that legacy Saturday when he won his first state title in his final time in the pool as a North Star, taking the 100-yard freestyle crown in 44.92 seconds.

“It means a lot. It’s still kind of sinking in,” Myhre said. “It’s been a goal of mine to win a state title since freshman year, and to have it happen is pretty awesome.”

After taking fifth in the 100 freestyle at last season’s state meet, Myhre made sure to leave his final mark on the North program before heading to swim at Iowa.

You could tell instantly that North coach Rob Rooney, who was on his knees cheering Myhre during the race, was elated for his senior swimmer.

“Joe Myhre. State champ. He’s earned it,” Rooney said. “He gave up a lot to get to this point, and he deserves every minute of the recognition he gets. He left a lasting legacy on this program, and he’s moving on. He’s one of the better swimmers to come through this program. I’m very proud of him.”

Someone who has relished a firsthand look at Myhre’s climb is his younger brother, Will Myhre. Now a North Stars freshman, Will Myhre only figured to benefit from seeing his sibling’s successful swan song.

Will Myhre nearly equaled the elation Saturday. After cruising in his Friday preliminary race in the 100 breaststroke, Will Myhre (55.95) was just out-touched – by .05 seconds – in Saturday’s finals, as New Trier’s Charlie Scheinfeld won the title. Will Myhre was runner-up.

“He’s going to have a lot of fuel in the fire over the next couple of years,” Rooney said. “He does need to realize that he introduced himself to the state in the breaststroke this weekend. I think everyone who is in that position would be disappointed, losing by that little, you know. I can respect that, but with that comes fire. He got a taste and got close, and he’s got three more years to remember today.”

St. Charles North senior boys swimmer The Myhre brothers stood together Saturday, earning fourth-place medals in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. They teamed up with Nathan Bawolek and Stephen Hutchinson in the medley relay, while Jack Williams joined Hutchinson and the Myhres in the 200 freestyle relay.

While the two brothers differ in personality, they share the same passion in the water. Joe Myhre knows his brother has a long road of successful high school swimming ahead of him.

“It stings a little now, there’s no question,” Joe Myhre said. “But he’ll be back. He’ll be back to normal ... but I have no doubt he’ll be back here for the next three years and will be up on the blocks getting (more) medals. He’s a tough competitor, and he’ll be back.”

Marmion’s Will Kamps and St. Charles East’s Mitchell Milosch, both sophomores, earned separate fifthplace finishes. Kamps competed in the 500 freestyle (4:35.17), while Milosch was part of the field in the 100 butterfly (50.25).

East coach Joe Cabel was proud

of the team’s effort this weekend and knows it meant a lot to see a swimmer like Milosch get the state experience.

“He’s still got more in the tank over the next few years, but there’s no question it’s huge for him,” Cabel said. “We’re excited for what the future holds, but I’m very proud of the team this year. We did some great things that these guys should hold on to and remember for a long time. It’s a big time improvement from last year.”

Milosch also competed in the 100 backstroke consolation finals Saturday, taking 10th in 51.86.

Batavia sophomore Garrett Clasen was the lone competitor for the West Chicago-Batavia co-op Saturday and finished eighth in the 200 individual medley (1:52.91).

New endangered species laws are trying to protect animals that could disappear from the earth if poaching and killing is not stopped.

Sometimes it is just a horn or a tusk that is wanted, but to get it, the animal must be killed. A look at some of the antiques that now can’t be sold legally illustrates the problem. While few would object to the laws that cover living animals, there is controversy about objecting to the sale of ivory, horn or feathers taken from animals more than 50 years ago when there was no scarcity of the animals. Whale oil was a useful source of light, and whale meat was a popular food.

Baby seals and tigers had fur that made attractive, warm coats. An elephant tusk or rhinoceros horn was used to make carved cups and decorative pieces. And eagle feathers were needed by Indians for religious ceremonies. Because some states have passed laws saying no ivory of any age can be legally sold, it has become a confusing market for collectors. Be sure to check the laws the day before you try to sell any parts of an endangered species. Many states are considering laws, some that will exempt piano keys and guitar picks, and others that will confiscate your piece and destroy it. In 2014, Garth’s Auctions in Delaware, Ohio, sold a wine caddy made in the early 20th century from the hoof of a rhinoceros. It brought $1,800. Today it probably would be impossible to

A: Silas Crocker was one of the owners of the first furniture factory in Sheboygan. He and a partner established a factory in a converted hotel in 1865. The factory burned down in 1875. Crocker bought a carriage company in 1880 and made chairs, stools, tables, china cabinets and other furniture. In 1924 the company was reorganized. It sold furniture for hotels, offices and schools. Crocker Chair Company was closed by 1932.

A: Russel Wright (1904-1976) designed domestic and industrial wares, including dinnerware, glassware, furniture, aluminum, radios, interiors and more. He designed modern dinnerware for several companies, including Knowles. Snowflower is part of Knowles Esquire line, made between 1956 and 1962. Some say this design of modernistic gray twigs and white dots on a pink background was Wright’s favorite line, although it wasn’t one of the most popular lines at the time.

Assisted living benefits seniors Dear Dr. K: We’ve finally convinced my mother to move to an assisted living facility. After spending the past five decades in her current house, she is very nervous about the move. What can we, and she, do to make the transition easier?

Dear Reader: Assisted living facilities are designed for people who can’t live on their own because they need help with the tasks of everyday living. The facilities generally provide meals, help with taking medication, housekeeping, laundry and activities. They are not meant for people who need round-the-clock nursing care.

No matter how clear the need, moving from one’s home to an assisted living facility can be emotionally challenging.

Realizing this, assisted living facilities often have people on staff who can help people like your mother to manage their feelings and make the transition easier.

It shouldn’t be hard for your mother to physically adjust to an assisted living facility. The environment is designed to meet the needs of an aging body. There are no steps to navigate. The bathrooms are adapted for walkers. There won’t be any more reaching for heavy pots and pans if the facility dining room provides meals.

Your mother might feel comforted, too, if she brings personal items to her new living space. This may include artwork, family photos or favorite furniture.

The new environment will allow your mother to increase her physical activity and wellness. Assisted living facilities always have exercise classes, such as tai chi or chair yoga, and many offer physical therapy on campus. It’s important to learn which services are available and take advantage of them.

For almost anyone, in any environment, the more you interact with others, the more you’ll feel at home. An easy way to meet others is to take part in the many activities offered at the facility. Taking part will help your mother feel engaged and purposeful – and less forlorn about the home she left behind.

But she was having trouble in her old three-level house – with the stairs, with handling cookware, with reaching things in the cabinets. Her children found an assisted living facility.

As you’d imagine, she hated the thought of leaving the only home she had ever known. However, she made the move. A year later she said to me, “I loved my old home. But I realize I was starting to hate it, too. Every time something about it defeated me, I remembered my earlier life – and felt very old. I feel younger now.”

In fact, it might be easier to get an appointment with one of them than it would be with the school counselor. – Olivia, Chicago Olivia: The counselor in a large high school usually is assigned between 400 to 500 students. Try to see your counselor 15 minutes before school or 15 minutes after school. If you can’t manage this, have your parents call and ask for an appointment for you. This will bring results.

Dear Abby: I live in a situation where my husband, our two kids and I share a home with my parents, two sisters and younger brother.

Despite the fact she and my family share the upstairs level of the home, she continues to walk around nude or in her undergarments throughout the day because she “hates” wearing clothes.
