According to the church, Bayer previously served as lead pastor at Concordia Lutheran in Pullman, Washington, and has a master of divinity from Concordia Seminary.

“Tim is known as a thought-provoking and inspirational communicator, visionary leader and teacher,” according to the ceremony’s program.

“He is a sought-out speaker, consultant and facilitator, focusing on how

faith transforms people, leadership, culture and communities.”

Bayer said it’s exciting to start someplace new but noted he has ties to the Chicago area, as he went to school in River Forest and has family and friends in the region.

BATAVIA – The Lutheran Education Association has awarded a Batavia fifth-grade teacher with a 2016 Distinguished Lutheran Elementary Teacher award, according to a news release.

Penny Suydam also serves as Immanuel Lutheran School’s interim principal, volunteers as its cheerleading coach and organizes its annual talent show, the release states.

According to the release, those supporting her nomination for the award noted her investment in the

children she teaches, her kindness and her patience.

“Her students know that they are loved by her, which is evident in her relationships with them, not only while they attend our school but also well beyond graduation,” the release states.

Additionally, the release states, SuyPenny dam not only teaches Suydam students the required curriculum but also how to be a loving Christian. Suydam, a Concordia University Chicago graduate, has 22

years of experience, which includes time at two other Lutheran schools in the Chicago area, according to the release.

In the release, she stated that her greatest joys in working with students include sharing the love of Jesus and sharing how he is a part of their lives.

“It’s rewarding to see the kids light up when they realize God cares about every aspect of their life,” Suydam stated in the release.

She was selected for the award by the Lutheran Education Association’s Elementary Teachers Network leadership team, according to the release.

Aurora man charged in theft at photo booth KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com

BATAVIA – A 24-year-old Aurora man has been charged with criminal damage to property and theft in a November incident that involved a photo booth at Funway in Batavia.

According to a news release issued by the Batavia Police Department, Chancellor J. Terrell, 24, of the 1400 block of East Wood Drive, Aurora, turned himself in to Batavia police at 1 p.m. Monday.

Police issued an alert last week after photos were obtained from the photo booth.

According to police, it is alleged that Terrell – while attempting to pry open a Chancellor coin box in the photo booth J. Terrell at Funway – had his photo taken while committing the theft in an incident that took place on Nov. 25. After police distributed the photos last week, several tips were received, according to the release.

The release indicated that Terrell was booked and released Monday afternoon.

The charges are misdemeanors, and Terrell could get up to one year in jail if convicted, the release states.

According to the previous release, $75 was taken from the photo booth, and $75 in damage was caused to the booth. Police had said the machine is designed to take photographs when it senses tampering to the cash drawer.

The machine is among the attractions at Funway, a facility that includes an arcade, a bowling alley, miniature golf courses and more.

‘I’M GOING TO MISS THIS PLACE’ Christiansen to retire as director of Kaneville Public Library

alagattolla@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – When he was in his second year of running the summer reading program at the Kaneville Public Library, Ray Christiansen said he decided to liven things up a bit.

Christiansen, the library’s director, put on a costume and a mask. He said it started as a gag, but it became a tradition.

“Every year after that, it’s become a challenge as to what kind of costume and hat is Mr. Ray going to show up in,” Christiansen said.

“I’ve been Coach Ray, Captain Ray, Jester Ray, Mad Scientist Ray,” he added. “I have a whole stack of hats that I can pull out. … They’re nice props, and it gets the kids’ attention.”

This year will mark the final time Christiansen will dress up for the reading program. Christiansen, 65, said he will be retiring as the library director by the end of the summer. He has been in the role since 2005.

Kaneville’s library is small – it is housed in the village’s community center, sharing the space with neighbors such as a bank, the post office, a preschool and a gym – and Christiansen has fulfilled many roles at the facility.

He reads to kids each week for story time. He added that he takes care of the collection, maintains the website and writes grants. There is only one task he said he can’t do.

“I told the board when I was hired that I don’t do crafts,” he said, smiling.

“They said, ‘Don’t worry about that.

I’m sure you will find someone who can.’ ” He eventually did find people to help with crafts, including his wife. As for the other tasks, some in the community offered praise for the longtime director. Lynette Werdin, a longtime member of the Kaneville Historical Society, said Christiansen “has always been so helpful.”

“He’s always done what a proper, perfect librarian does,” said Werdin, who noted that she was a retired librarian herself. “He will find the answers for you.”

Kaneville Village President Pat Hill runs Hill’s Country Store, which is across the street from the library’s building. She said Christiansen “will do anything he can for his patrons.” In an email, she described one example.

“I recall one instance when my

Ray will also order you a specific book if he doesn’t have it. He will help you with anything. I am truly going to miss his kindness.”

Inside of the library, Christiansen showed off a large piggy bank used to collect donations to help buy children’s books. He opened some of the books that were purchased and noted they were identified as being paid for through that collection. Also, when asked what he might do during his retirement, he hustled to the shelves to find a science-fiction anthology that includes a submission from him. He said he might pursue his writing a little more seriously.

Christiansen said he previously worked as a librarian at colleges and universities. Before taking the Kaneville job, he said, he worked more than 25 years at Aurora University. He

Longtime Kaneville Historical Society member and retired librarian said the Kaneville job was different from any other job he had.

“You get to know the families pretty well,” Christensen said. “Kids will bring their pets in to introduce you to the new dog or the new cat.”

He said that when the weather gets warmer, people will be riding their bikes to the library, adding that “one girl keeps threatening to ride her horse … but she never does.”

Christiansen was the director during the library’s 75th anniversary celebration. He recalls one time when there was a paper airplane craft, and many kids headed to the building’s

Christiansen, an Aurora resident, said he has plans to travel with his wife during his retirement. He wants to buy a new bicycle. There is a lot to do, but he said he has enjoyed his time at the library.

“I’m going to miss this place,” he said. “I’m going to miss the people. I’m going to have to find a new place to sit down and talk books and movies with people. When you do it every day, you really get used to it. I know that’s going to be a big chunk of my life that I’m going to miss.”

BATAVIA – An overheated motor on an HVAC system Monday caused an evacuation of Holy Cross church and school in Batavia, according to a news release issued by the Batavia Fire Department.

In the release, Battalion Chief Ed Jancauskas said there were no injuries. He commended the staff and students at the school “for the orderly evacuation.”

According to the release, firefighters arrived at 9:58 a.m. at 2300 Main St., Batavia, in responding to a report of visible smoke inside the building, called in by employees in the lower level. Officials “reported smoke in the lower level, getting heavier,” the release stated, adding that the source was not immediately located.

“The school students were evacuated, and the alarm was upgraded to a general response,” the release stated. “Upon further investigation, fire crews found an overheated motor on a large HVAC system causing the source of the smoke.” HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, air conditioning.

The release stated that the unit was isolated, the lower level was ventilated, maintenance was called for repairs, “and the school was turned back over to the church and school staff.”

“A public address [announcement] was made to the teachers, helpers and children, explaining the cause of the problem and commending them on the accountability and orderly evacuation of the building,” the release stated.

The last unit was cleared at 10:46 a.m.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1948, in Geneva, IL, the son of Harold J. and Mildred R. (Kastol) Issel.

Tim served his country in the United States Army. He was a painter by trade and owner of H&I Decorating in Batavia until his retirement. Tim liked to refer to himself as a “gentleman farmer” and enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking and casino hopping. He enjoyed spending time with grandkids and family and friends in Illinois and Sedona, AZ. He was united in marriage on June 8, 1968, in Plano, IL, to Victoria “Vicki” Sue Richardson.

Tim is survived by two sons, Timothy “Ryan” (Bryn) Issel of Oak Park, IL, and David (Jessica) Issel of Byron, MN; one sister, Patricia (Thomas) Frank of Naperville, IL; four grandchildren, Benjamin T. Issel, Ava V. Issel, Sara H. Issel, all of Oak Park, IL, Weston E. Issel of Byron, MN; and three nephews, Matthew (Tina) Frank of Eau Claire, WI; Tyrone (Kim) Moffitt of Gainesville, FL, and Kevin Moffitt of Kaneville, IL; and two nieces, Christine M. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Pearl (Reyburn) Macklin.

C.H. was born on July 19, 1937, in Salt Lake City, UT. His family moved to Southern California during WWII. He grew up eagerly joining his father on fishing trawlers at the early age of 10 years, and later playing football, as co-captain, or Jordan High School and Long Beach City College. He graduated from Cal State University, Long Beach, in 1965 with a degree in Marine Biology. He worked for five years as a sales representative and later as Los Angeles District Sales Manager with Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals, where he led his district to number one in the nation for two consecutive years. After earning his MBA from Pepperdine University, in 1983, he joined Syncor, a world-wide radioactive pharmaceuticals company, as Vice President of Marketing and Sales. After retirement, he and Pat lived in several places, including West Yellowstone, MT, Palm Desert,

CA, Galena, IL, and Geneva, IL, as they followed, alternately, the warm weather and the grandkids. He was a social, active man who loved the outdoors, especially sailing, fishing and golf. He also maintained a love of reading, especially science and history, throughout his life, as well as teaching and playing chess with his grandson, Dax and watching his granddaughter Kate play basketball, softball and soccer.

He will truly be missed and remain in our hearts forever.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life in Carl’s honor, scheduled for March 26, 2016, in Redlands, California.

Born: June 20, 1924; in Chicago, IL Died: Feb. 5, 2016; in Geneva, IL Eugene Patrick Timothy “Gene” Mulcahy, 91, of St. Charles, IL, passed away on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, IL. He was born on June 20, 1924, in Chicago, IL, the son of Patrick Timothy and Annie (Noonan) Mulcahy. Gene married his bride, Catherine “Kitty” Casolare on May 26, 1946, in Chicago, IL. At the age of 15, Gene joined St. Jude’s seminary. After eight months Gene had a tragic accident for which Gene almost lost his legs by falling out of a back of a truck. This ultimately changed the course of his life which led Gene to work for the United States government.

While working for the government Gene met his Bride “Kitty.” They started dating and fell in love. Within the first three years of their marriage their first son Patrick was born; followed by Dennis and then Kathy the next two years. Thirteen years later their daughter Mary was born. Patrick’s family provided Gene with his first three loving grandchildren which Gene loved spending quality time with every weekend.

On the weekend the Mulcahy home was filled with the joyous laughter of Gene’s grandchildren. In 2000 Dennis and Debby blessed him with his fourth grandchild. While spending time in California, Jackie and Gene developed a very close and loving relationship. He also bonded with her dog Magic, and teased her relentlessly that Magic was “his dog”. Then Gene was blessed with his first great grandchild Ian. A second blessing arrived as Angelica. Connor was then welcomed into the fold followed by Ana. The addition of Gene’s four great grandchildren brought an additional spirit of life, love, and great pride.

Gene worked for the United States Treasury Department in Chicago, IL for 40 years. Gene happily enjoyed his retirement of over 30 years. Gene attended and served as usher at the 7:30 a.m. Mass at St. Patrick’s Church every Sunday. Gene met the Felician Franciscan Sisters, Cecelia, Clarine, and Kathleen while attending Mass. He and the three Sisters developed a loving friendship that continued after their move to Chicago. Gene was a devout Catholic and loved his church very much.

Gene enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Gene’s family meant the world to him. It was a “Mulcahy tradition” that every weekend the family would gather at his home, his parents home, and his in-laws for “a homemade dinner with all of the trimmings” (like a Thanksgiving gathering every weekend).

Gene was a very outgoing individual with a sense of humor that everyone who knew him commented on. Gene had the Irish charisma like his mother Annie which resulted in him being able to bring joy and humor to every-

one’s life that he touched. Gene was very proud of his Irish heritage. As a result, he tried to convert everyone that he came in contact with into his Irish heritage. Gene’s brother Bob introduced him to his love of golf. Until the age of 88, he was still an avid golfer, playing with his brother and sons as well as his friends in Chicago and dear friend David in California. While in California, Gene enjoyed playing golf at Pebble Beach. Gene frequently traveled to California, and Arizona visiting his son and daughter. While Gene visited his son, Dennis in California, he enjoyed eating at his many favorite restaurants with his good friend David. Gene traveled to The Hawaiian Islands to spend quality and loving time with his wife along with his son Dennis and his daughter-inlaw Debby. He had the time of his life basking in the sunny weather in California or in Arizona!

Gene loved and adored his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His family and loving friends were blessed to have Gene for many healthy and happy years of his life.

All of his family will truly miss his loving spirit and sense of humor which touched their life’s everyday. Gene’s close friends will also miss his happy-go-lucky spirit, jovial laugh, love of family and his Irish pride. His memory will be carried on by all that had the privilege of being part of his life. Gene is now with his family in Heaven and as such this is not a loss but a rejoicing in his new life. We will be keeping with the values that you cherished and bestowed on all that you have touched. Thank you for being part of our life’s. We love you.

Kaneville Road Dunkin’ Going on Donuts is voted down

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen voted 9-0 Monday night against allowing a Dunkin’ Donuts at a Kaneville Road strip mall as a full contingent of neighbors came out in opposition at a Geneva Committee of the Whole meeting.

The petitioner sought to have a Dunkin’ Donuts sit-down and drive-thru restaurant in the strip mall at 2401 Kaneville Road, Unit 12, at the former location of a bank that had a drive-up window.

In July, aldermen voted, 6-4, to send a special-use request for a Dunkin’ Donuts with a drive-thru back to staff for more work.

Neighbors objected Monday just as they did in July, saying there already is too much traffic and that even with restrictions on when the drive-thru can be open, a Dunkin’ Donuts would just add to the congestion.

Resident Mary Stavenhagen said traffic is paramount in that area.

“The traffic is just unbelievable,” Stavenhagen said. “I can’t imagine

what will happen if a Dunkin’ Donuts is approved for that location.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Radecki said he was against the proposal because the strip mall was built with limitations for the residential area.

“The No. 1 objection we hear about this – we know for a fact this is the highest accident rate in the city of Geneva at Kaneville and Randall Road,” Radecki said. “This level of intensity was never intended for this site. This is oriented for a local neighborhood. … It’s more of question is it appropriate to do this on this site.”

But the petitioner’s traffic engineer, Tim Doron, said Kaneville is a collector street that has 100 cars an hour and two-thirds of the cars coming from existing traffic.

Doron said the shopping center owner would put in a “pork chop” to improve the traffic flow on Kaneville Road, and the petitioner would have a guard there for 90 days, making sure people turn right.

The City Council is to take final action at the Tuesday, Feb. 16, meeting.

“Pheasant Run, to us, is part of the fabric of this community,” he said, describing it as a symbol of the city’s east side that brings in a “good amount” of property tax, sales tax and alcohol tax.

The ownership’s plans to make Pheasant Run a more viable and modern facility are appealing to St. Charles, Rogina said. He said it is unfortunate that legal proceedings may slow that process.

When a representative from the airport authority spoke against Pheasant Run’s concept plan at a meeting last fall, 1st Ward Alderman Dan Stellato noted the airport had two years to buy the property when it was in foreclosure.

He further said he thought it was wrong that the airport, which is outside the city, would come in and tell the city how to manage or develop the property.

ST. CHARLES – The future of a longtime symbol of St. Charles has been called into question, as the DuPage Airport Authority recently filed a lawsuit seeking acquisition of Pheasant Run Resort through its eminent domain powers.

Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles, is directly north of the DuPage Airport, 2700 International Drive, West Chicago.

Phillip Luetkehans, an attorney representing the airport authority, said the entity is trying to protect its runways and airspace. He also referenced a concept plan Pheasant Run presented to St. Charles aldermen in October that envisioned adding retailers and residences to the site.

The residential use is “not appropriate” next to an airport, Luetkehans said.

“We’ve all seen what happened with O’Hare and Midway with the noise complaints,” he said.

He said attempts to negotiate with Pheasant Run have been unsuccessful.

Pheasant Run Resort, which is owned by St. Charles Resort LLC, did not provide a comment by late Monday afternoon.

‘Experience’ Republicans manage to smash Rubio

Pickett’s charge. Waterloo. The Charge of the Light Brigade. Take your pick of historical analogies, the “experience” wing of the Republican Party launched a desperate, and very possibly doomed, assault at Saturday’s GOP debate, during a climatic moment for a GOP race that has been dominated by men who have significantly less realworld policymaking credibility.

The polls say the forces of experience probably will leave New Hampshire in defeat, and even if they pulled something out, racking up victories in future primaries would be hard. But at the very least, they have made the rising Marco Rubio look like an empty suit.

Rubio is commonly lumped in with the GOP “establishment” candidates. But he is a first-term senator with few major accomplishments for his handful of years on the national stage, and he has spent much of the race honing a campaign narrative shrill enough to keep up with Donald Trump’s bombast and Ted Cruz’s hard ideological puritanism.

This distinguishes him – negatively – from Jeb Bush, Chris Christie and John Kasich, who in another year would have had a major experience edge over Rubio and the rest on stage.

At several moments Saturday night, experience – for once – did not seem to be a liability. Christie attacked Rubio for having an unimpressive Senate record, for failing to fight for his comprehensive immigration bill when the politics got tough and for constantly reverting to canned denunciations of President Obama when he does not have a snappy answer to a question.

Seemingly determined to prove Christie right, Rubio offered those canned denunciations of President Obama with comical regularity.

At one point, Christie interjected: “There it is. There it is. The memorized 25-second speech. There it is, everybody.”

It was devastating, and entirely deserved. Rubio’s onenote story about how Obama has purposely hurt America – “All this damage that he’s done to America is deliberate” – is remarkably mean-spirited. Bush piled on Rubio, too, comparing him to Obama and arguing that being able to deliver a speech does not qualify you to be president.

All of the governors – Bush, Christie and Kasich – had a good night. Christie particularly stood out, in large part because of his strong anti-Rubio offensive.

But in the history of the 2016 race, will their performances Saturday resemble a glorious turning point for experience – rather than a last stand?

Given how the rest of the race has proceeded, it still seems unlikely.

To the Editor: I am writing about a current issue in our country – the controversy over the Confederate flag. I understand the emotional reactions for the reason why this flag was “banned,” because of the shooting that occurred this past summer in South Carolina. However, banning a flag that is a part of American history is not going to solve anything but make the situation worse by trying to forget significant events from the past.

While this is understandable, it is not practical for the reason that those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it.

The Confederate flag we all recognize is not the real Confederate flag. The true Confederate flag is very similar to our American flag.

and one white – crossing the flag horizontally, with a blue box on the upper left-hand corner with seven stars, the stars representing the seven states that first seceded from the Union.

The flag was changed, in part, because of the confusion during the first battle of Bull Run, when troops couldn’t distinguish each other’s flags because they looked so similar through the smoke of musket fire.

There actually were multiple versions of the Confederate flag that were used through the course of the American Civil War. We have rights under the U.S. Constitution that allow us

to live freely, as our founders wanted. The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech, meaning someone can freely express their beliefs or opinions, peacefully.

Any American can legally display a Confederate flag, as long it’s done peacefully under the U.S. Constitution.

Someone can even display a German swastika, as long as it’s peacefully done and they are a law-abiding citizen.

Although most of us would disagree and be outraged, including me, this is legal under the Constitution.

CHANGE IN PREPARATION More individual-driven practice as sectionals near

ccasey@shawmedia.com Until this point in the wrestling season, it’s been all about team.

Now a limited number of teams in Illinois can continue to say that. As Saturday wrapped up each class’s regionals, most local programs have shifted their focus to sectionals this weekend.

St. Charles East may have left the Class 3A Glenbard North Regional slightly disappointed with the way things went – finishing in second place behind regional champion and host Glenbard North – but that’s over and done with.

It’s on to improving for Friday’s Conant Sectional.

“Some of the mistakes we made were because of inexperience and others were just bad decisions,” Saints coach Jason Potter said. “That definitely needs to be cleaned up before (Friday). At the end of the year, when you get to this point, mistakes need to be as minimal as possible.”

The Saints, as with many other programs just sending individuals to sectionals, will take much more of an individual focus from this point on.

Potter said his plan is to continue to work hard throughout this week, but breaking things down that the program would normally do as a group, with a much more one-on-one feel to it.

“Every coach in the room will probably sit with one or two wrestlers and break things down,” Potter said. “Instead of doing technique for an opponent or technique that we did as a team, now it’s going to be individual stuff. There’s room for improvement on every single one of them, even the guys that won, so the plan is to continue to work and wrestle better than we did (at regionals).”

Upstate Eight Conference champion at 126 pounds, East’s Anthony Rubino, saw someone he knows will be his biggest competitor, probably in the state, at that weight in Glenbard North’s Austin Gomez, who after beating Rubino Saturday in the regional finals, holds a 33-1 record on the season.

The postseason presents challenges like that in every sport. Most times, not always, it presents teams or individuals with matchups they are unfamiliar with.

It’s something that Geneva and coach Tom Chernich are quite aware of and expect to prepare as much as possible.

NOTEWORTHY Coffey milestone overlooked in loss

Batavia coach Jim Nazos knew what Canaan Coffey wanted heading into Friday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division rivalry game at Geneva.

Yes, Coffey knew with one shot of the ball from behind the 3-point arc he would eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career. However, Nazos knew there was one thing on Coffey’s mind Friday night.

“He would have put this milestone off another night if it meant us walking out of here with a win,” Nazos said. “He’s one of those players that doesn’t come around very often. He’s excited about the 1,000 (points), but he’s such a team player, he’s humble about it right now.

He wants to win, and that’s the bottom line with a player like Canaan Coffey.”

In the 52-38 loss for the Bulldogs, while the Vikings’ players celebrated with the packed house of Geneva students, coach Phil Ralston still thought it appropriate to make known his team’s appreciation of the milestone.

After the game, Ralston presented Coffey with the game ball, one that splashed through the basket on a 3-point attempt

in the second quarter for exactly 1,000 career points.

“I credit Geneva giving him the ball.

They didn’t have to do that,” Nazos said.

“It’s a class move by them to do that.

It’s a milestone for him, and I think every single one of his teammates is thrilled for him.”

Geneva senior Sean Chambers had the task of chasing Coffey around the numerous screens that he runs off of every game, and for the most part felt he did a good job containing Coffey.

He finished with 13 points, knocking down three 3-pointers, which is something Chambers tried to control as much as possible.

“He’s a heck of a player,” Chambers said. “I knew he’d make his shots, but you just have to keep on going. He hit a few shots in my face, but I was kind of expecting that, you know. He scored his 1,000th point on me and I’m kind of all right with that. It’s kind of cool. He’s a great player and definitely deserves that recognition.”

Chambers cracked a smile when asked if the two shared any sort of conversation during Friday’s contest.

“Every now and then, we’d say something,” Chambers said. “I think there were times where he may have been a little frustrated so it’s usually not the best kind of chatter. But we’re pretty good friends off the court and we go way back, so it’s always cool going up against one another.”

Weber sets Cadets’ 3-point records

Another milestone was reached Friday night despite a team loss.

During Marmion’s 61-44 Chicago Catholic League South Division loss to Loyola Academy Saturday, senior Hunter weber knocked down six 3-pointers to become the school’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals made with 127. He has also set the record for most 3-point field goals attempted in one season.

According to coach Joe Currie, Weber’s 62 made 3-pointers this season is third most in one season for a Cadets basketball player. The current single-season record for Marmion is 92 made 3s in one season.

Although all eyes were on the Batavia-Geneva rivalry game, and there were many eyes in a packed Geneva gymnasium Friday, a game that went rather unnoticed but played a big role in the UEC River race was St. Charles East’s defeat of Larkin. The loss was the fourth for the Royals, all but knocking them out of title contention, while the Saints remain in discussion with three losses. Batavia still holds its own destiny (one loss), but the Saints and Geneva made up ground Friday, remaining at three losses each.

COMING ATTRACTION Speaking of those two teams that remain in the running, a contest Friday will tell another story of the UEC River race. Geneva hosts the Saints at 7 p.m. in a matchup that really favored the Vikings the first time around. In forward Bennett Fuzak’s return from a concussion, Geneva cruised to a 62-44 victory over East, setting up the important rematch Friday.

Gabrielsen went on to say the reason why the program is on the right track is because everyone from each school, St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Geneva, Batavia and Kaneland, who make up the varsity team, all get along.

“You can stop and think about the success this team has had over the past two seasons,” Hawks senior forward and captain Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North) said. “But then you realize there are still more games left to be played and you have to keep pushing through.”

Kurtzhals and teammates Jake Hummel and Josh Gadow all are in the top ten in scoring in the ISHL and have accounted for 60 of the team’s 123 goals this season, which has led to the Hawks success this season.

“We had a core group of guys who were back from last year which had contributed to this year’s success,” Kurtzhals said. “We may be losing ten seniors off of this year, but the cupboard will not be left bare.”

“When Phil was hired by us as a board, not only did we want to get a good coach but someone who had the

right high school hockey experience,” Hawks board president Matt Gadow said. “So we wanted to make sure we would be able to promote high school hockey. At the time Phil came on board also, we were struggling with just having one team. Now we have a solid varsity program and a sold (junior varsity) program and have them consistently each season.”

Matt Gadow, who is in his second year as board president, said the philosophy of the club has changed each season because of the success the program has enjoyed with not only two teams last season, but three teams in the spring and two this season.

“I am trying to get the parents of the younger kids who are part of our club thinking what kind of direction and expectations we should have as a club going into the spring and next season and beyond,” Matt Gadow said.

“The good thing now is, with us, we are financially stable and do not have to worry about making decisions if we can afford to be in the state tournament or can we afford to be in any tournament at all. We have financial stability.”

Austin Macias is a Sophomore with a record of 26-1 and he currently holds the school record for wins in a single season. This spring, he was a Greco State Champion. Austin took 2nd Place at Freestyle State.

This season Austin has reached the finals in four tournaments, winning three of them. He currently leads the team in Take Downs and Pins . Austin works hard on and off the mat and is considered a team leader.

Claire Jakaitis just became the fourth St. Charles North girls basketball in history to reach 1000 points on February 3rd against Streamwood. She has averaged 15 points a game and 7 rebounds for the season.

Earlier this season Claire signed her Division one letter of intent to play basketball at University of Loyola at Maryland. She is only the third girl in North history to receive a full scholarship to a division one university!

After some early-season struggles, David has become one of the most consistent scorers on Kaneland. He highlighted his good stretch with a 28-point, 14-rebound, five-block performance in the Knights’ win over Rochelle recently. David has made over 40-percent of his 3-point shots this season and close to 80-percent of his free throws.

Last season the Fox Valley Hawks burst upon the high school hockey scene with 22 wins and a deep run into the postseason.

Most thought the Hawks could have been a ‘Flash in the Pan’ and they could not sustain their success.

However, one need not look any further than the Hawks current overall record, 21-7-4, 17-3-3 in the Illinois Suburban Hockey League (ISHL), just one point out of the top spot in the league heading into the final weekend of the regular season, and with a game in hand on the league-leading DuPage Stars.

They have scored 123 goals, while giving up just 56 and being the least-penalized team in the ISHL with 123 penalty minutes.

The Hawks, currently ranked No. 9 in combined state, had a successful outing this past weekend as they defeated Leyden Saturday afternoon, 4-3, in Carol Stream to put themselves in a position to win the regular season league title should they win out this

coming weekend and DuPage lose their remaining regular season game.

“I think it is more the kids making this possible more than the (coaching) staff,” Hawks second-year varsity coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “I think if you had told me two seasons ago that we were going to put together two 20win seasons in a row, I would have said you were crazy. It’s a credit to the kids and the board in terms of what we have put together. The season before I got here, there were 12 kids playing for the club. Last season, it was 22.”

Gabrielsen said one of the key factors in the success of the Hawks the last two seasons has been just that, let the kids be kids and hockey players and enjoy coming to the rink. But also enjoy doing other things outside the rink.

“I don’t think you can ever be satisfied with where you are at,” Gabrielsen said. “You always wants to get better and get more wins. I do not think we are as demanding as other programs are which is key. For example, we made finals week an option to come to the rink. The kids had enough on their minds.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia girls basketball coach Kevin Jensen summed up the Bulldogs’ 56-50 nonconference overtime win over York Monday night with the comment that the game had a ‘weird feel to it.”

That would be one way to sum up a game where the Bulldogs hit only four baskets in the first half, canned only one 3-pointer and had its lead scorer score Hannah half of her points from Frazier the free-throw line.

“For scoring 11 points in the first half, not bad to finish with 56,” Jensen said. “Our second half was much better.

It kind of a had a weird feeling to the game. After a huge win on Friday (a buzzer beating win over rival Geneva), a Monday, a nonconference game, with (regional) seeds already out so it had a weird feel to it.”

The Dukes managed only seven buckets in the first 16 minutes but five were from beyond the 3-point arc giving them a 19-11 halftime lead.

Batavia (23-5) finally found its shooting touch in the third quarter scoring more points in the period (15) than in the entire first half.

The Bulldogs pulled within one point in the last minute of the third quarter on a Hannah Frazier free throw at 27-26.

York’s Kathleen Levins (12 points) responded with a basket to give her team a 29-26 lead when the third quarter ended.

Frazier opened Batavia’s overtime scoring with a conventional threepoint play – a layup and a free throw to put the Bulldogs on top, 46-43. The senior led all scorers with 24 points with 12 coming from the charity stripe.

Frazier helped the Bulldogs eventually pull away.

With her 24 points Monday night, Frazier suits at 1,990 for her career – just ten from 2,000 – with her senior night game against St. Charles East on Friday. That is the last regular season game for the senior and St. Louis commit before her final postseason begins as Batavia hosts a Class 4A regional.

Frazier already is the school’s alltime leading scorer, trying to become the first girls basketball player in Batavia’s history to eclipse the 2,000-point mark.

Geddy Rerko scored 12 points for Batavia.

Kaylin Kenny tallied 16 points for York including four 3 pointers.

JOHNSBURG – Like most teams, the Burlington Central girls basketball set goals before the season.

One goal that most teams don’t set or come close to achieving is going undefeated in conference play for their high school career. Thanks to a stellar defensive effort and a big first quarter, the Rockets defeated Johnsburg, 63-31, in a Big Northern Conference East Division game Monday night.

With the win, Burlington Central (21-4, 13-0 BNC East) now has won 51 consecutive BNC East games, and with a victory today against Richmond-Burton, the Rockets’ seniors will have completed their entire high school career without a conference loss.

Johnsburg (23-3, 11-2 BNC East) is a team capable of scoring a lot of points and had the advantage of playing on its home floor Monday. Nothing can take away the momentum of a big conference game at home than a quick start and that is exactly what Burlington Central did.

After spotting the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead, the Rockets ended the first quarter on a 21-2 run and silenced the large

Johnsburg crowd. The defensive effort in the first quarter really aided the Rockets fast start.

“We felt like we could put some pressure on them which could lead to baskets and that is exactly what we did to open the game,” Rockets coach Mark Smith said. “We were able to start the game fast and didn’t really look back.

The kids knew Johnsburg only had one conference loss and would be a tough opponent, and we came out focused and determined and got the job done.”

The Skyhawks made a run of their own in the second quarter and were able to close the Burlington Central lead to 27-20, but the Rockets ended any hopes of a Johnsburg upset with an 11-0 run to end the first half.

The Rockets allowed just 11 Johnsburg points in the second half and a big reason for that was the defensive effort of Kayla Ross, who Coach Smith said after the game could guard anyone in the state of Illinois.

“I love playing defense and my job is to shut down their best player and I was happy with the outcome tonight,” Ross said. “Our whole team defense was awesome tonight.”

China painting was an important artistic talent in past centuries.

Although single color transfer designs were developed and used by the late 1700s, they lacked the color and graceful lines that were possible if the ceramic was decorated by hand. Today, the work of exceptional painters brings much higher prices than other pieces by the same factory. Shirayamadani (1865-1948) was a Japanese artist at Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati.

Rudolph T. Lux (1815-1868) decorated white porcelain with portraits ordered by important politicians and businessmen in New Orleans, and William Powell (working 1900 to 1950) was famous for painting English birds on porcelains made

by Royal Worcester. In the first part of the 1900s, painting ceramics was a hobby and sometimes a job of talented housewives. There were magazines like Keramic Studio, published by Adelaide Alsop Robineau that featured pictures and instructions and even furnished patterns. Large makers of dinnerware and decorative porcelains often had a team of young women who put patterns on plates or sometimes, painted original landscapes or floral designs. A Royal Worcester vase from the early 1900s was decorated with a picture of wetlands and two egrets in soft colors and gilded trim. It is marked with the green “Royal Worcester England” mark and the initials “WHB.” It also is signed “W. Powell” by the

painter. The 12 1/2-inch-tall vase sold in 2015 for $1,180. *** Q: I have a small wash table with a metal tag on it that reads “The Ross Table Wash-Stand, Patented, Manufactured by Forest City Furniture Co., Rockford, Ill.” It has a hinged lid with a mirror on the inside of the lid and compartments to hold things. There is a shelf below. When was this made and what it might be worth?

A: Forest City Furniture Co. was in business in Rockford from 1869 to 1919. L.P. Ross was granted a patent for a “combined wash stand and table” in 1886. The compartments in the washstand are meant to hold the bowl and pitcher, and there is a removable compartment for waste water. The shelf holds soap and towels. Your washstand is worth about $400. *** Q: Are printed paper bags from closed stores really collectible, and are they popular? I saw a D. H. Holmes bag on eBay for $40.

A: Collectors like shopping bags with interesting graphics or from particular stores. Some collectors hang them on the wall like paintings. Paper shopping bags with handles were first made in 1912.

Some shopping bags are considered works of art. Over 100 bags were exhibited at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City in 1978. The museum now owns over 1,000 bags.

Brass cash registers were made from the 1890s to about 1918. Flat metal cases stamped and painted to look like wood were made beginning about 1918. The larger number on your cash register is the serial number. It indicates the cash register was made in early 1926, so it’s not actually wood but metal painted to look like wood.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips together. We played Barbies, went on adventures, shopping, saw movies and had sleepovers. As we grew older, we began trusting each other with our lives. I could tell her anything and everything, and I was there for her whenever she needed support or a shoulder to cry on.

However, now that we are older, we slowly have noticed small differences in our lives. She became focused on her studies and art. I joined the cheerleading squad and became interested in meeting new people. Our lives have diverged, and now it’s as if we have become complete strangers.

I want our friendship to go back to the way it was.

What can I say or do to show her I miss the old her?

Soup to Nutz

Dear Abby: My stepson just turned 7. My husband was granted custody because the mother was declared unfit due to her drug abuse. She was granted supervised visits until she can pass two consecutive drug tests.

Over the past year and a half, her visits have become few and far between. My husband and I think it would be a good idea for “Tony” to start seeing a therapist again. He doesn’t talk about his mother often, and I’m worried he may be bottling up a lot of his feelings.

Tony is starting to ask more questions about his mom – like why he can’t stay the night with her, why he can’t live with her and why he hasn’t seen her much lately. I try not to say anything negative about her.

Is it time to explain the situation to him? He is still so young, and I don’t know how to explain things in a way he would understand. If you were me, what would you do?

– Stepmom In Alabama Dear Stepmom: You and your husband are wise to want to prevent problems before they happen. If I were in your situation, I would talk to Tony’s therapist, explain what’s going on and ask for pointers regarding his questions and his behavior.

My instinct would be to tell the boy his mother doesn’t see him because she is sick. It’s the truth. When he’s older, he will need to know there may be an inherited predisposition to addiction in his family – but for now that can wait. Definitely contact the therapist if you think he/she was a good one.

Dear Reader: Hypnotherapy may help with pain management. These days it is used to treat many mental and physical health problems. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Max Shapiro, a psychologist with Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. He explained hypnotherapy is most effective in treating problems that require stronger control over the body’s responses. Pain is a good example; insomnia is another.

Hypnotherapy turns your attention inward. A hypnotherapist helps you enter a trancelike state. In that state, your attention is highly focused, so you’re more responsive to suggestions. With the guidance of a hypnotherapist, you can start to control or alter your thoughts, feelings and physical state.

A hypnotic trance empowers you to activate neural circuits that otherwise are inactive.

When activated, this circuitry can reduce pain, among other things.

Let’s consider insomnia. Hypnosis can be very effective in blocking out the distracting chatter that interferes with sleep. A hypnotherapist will first teach a patient how to go into a trance. Once in a trance, the patient will focus on his or her own past experience of falling asleep easily, effortlessly and comfortably. The patient then will be taught to practice going into a trance at bedtime and re-creating those feelings.

About half of people who use hypnotherapy for insomnia see improvement after a few sessions. Others require several more sessions. Only about one in 10 people won’t find it useful.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The success rate for hypnotherapy in treating pain is much more complicated. That might be because the source and nature of pain can vary so widely. Some people experience quick and long-lasting relief; others find it more challenging.

Hypnotherapy may be much more effective for some people than for others. In part, a successful outcome depends on how committed you are. For hypnotherapy to work, you will need to put the lessons learned at each session into practice at home. If you need an outside voice to help you focus inward, recordings might help to get you into a trance state.

Hypnotherapy typically is a complementary therapy. That means it should be part of a broader treatment plan that may include more traditional pain relief techniques and medications, if needed.

Like most doctors, I was skeptical hypnosis really could work to help relieve suffering. It seemed like magic, and I don’t believe in magic. But now we know the brain experiences symptoms – like pain – and the brain has its own natural ways of relieving those symptoms. However, those “natural” ways often lie dormant and need to be activated. Hypnosis is a way of activating the brain’s ability to quiet bothersome symptoms.

Honesty also shows children you trust them.

8. Separate the behavior from the individual. In problem situations, make certain the child knows the behavior, not the child, is unacceptable.

9. Deal with the here-and-now issues. Dredging up the past may serve to further block communication within the family.

10. Work on your own positive self-esteem. Happy, well-adjusted human beings who genuinely care for others make excellent parents.

At the bridge table, sometimes one defender can singlehandedly defeat a contract. But more often the defenders need to cooperate, signaling carefully -- assuming each is watching the cards, of course.

In today’s deal, West might come up with the right answer unassisted, but East can make his life so much easier. South is in four spades. How should the defenders work together to take four tricks after West leads the club ace?

North’s three-spade response was a modern gadget: In competitive auctions, jump raises are pre-emptive.

He was showing four-card support (getting to the nine-trick level with a nine-card fit) and less than game-invitational values. With a stronger hand, he would have cue-bid three clubs.

Here, South’s raise to game was debatable. He was hoping dummy would be very short in clubs and that he could ruff his losers in that suit without East’s being able to overruff.

At trick two, West will cash the club king. What should East discard?

If he throws a discouraging diamond deuce, maybe West will find the heart shift, but it is doubtful. He is much more likely to lead a third club, hoping East can overruff the dummy. Here, though, South can ruff with dummy’s spade eight, draw trumps, and claim an overtrick.

Instead, East should signal boldly with the heart king -- top of touching honors since he couldn’t win the trick. Then it will be easy for West.
