Protecting, preserving

It’s that belief and a deep sense of patriotism that is a the root of the work of the Veterans Conservation Corps of Chicagoland, an organization Haberthur created in 2012 to make a positive difference in the lives of veterans and the landscapes in which they live by giving them hands-on restoration experience.

Haberthur – who is a veteran of the 2003 Iraq invasion – said nature can be a source of solace to veterans struggling with issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder and de-

pression when they return to civilian life.

“When I got out, I had my own trouble transitioning back to normal life,” he said, noting long hikes would give him a sense of regeneration.

Unemployment tends to compound veterans’ struggles, as they tend to feel like they have no sense of purpose, said Haberthur, now a restoration ecologist for the Kane County Forest Preserve District.

This winter, Haberthur has put a small group of veterans to work with the support of a $56,000 Audubon Toyota TogetherGreen Innovation Grant awarded to the Veterans Conservation Corps.

The veterans are learning about ecological resto-

ration while restoring oak woodlands, prairies and wetlands at the Dick Young Forest Preserve near Batavia.

Haberthur said the location is fitting because the forest preserve is named after a decorated World War II veteran.

Through the five-month transitional job-training program, veterans will gain real-world skills that should help them secure employment in ecological restoration. Last month, for example, participants earned their chainsaw certification and soon would earn their pesticide license, Haberthur said.

Stark described the restoration work as a good field for veterans because it is physically demanding and requires teamwork and camaraderie – elements familiar to veterans.

The veterans spend most of their eight-hour days in the field conducting such work as clearing the forest preserve of invasive brush, Haberthur said.

“It’s exhausting,” he said.

Cutting down trees and seeing the finished product is enjoyable, he said.

“To be able to see a plan work out is phenomenal,” Honaker said. “To me, there’s really no better feeling.”

Those interested in helping Veterans Conservation Corps members with restoration work can attend public volunteer events, which are held monthly.

The next event is set for 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 22. The third and final brush clearing event is set for March 15, and a planting event is being planned for the spring, Haberthur said.

Cunningham, Davoust differ on views

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The race for the Republican nomination in the March 18 primary for Kane County Clerk pits a three-term incumbent against a County Board member in the midst of his third term.

Incumbent Jack Cunningham, an Aurora resident who has been clerk since 2002, said he wants to use his education and experience to serve at least one more term.

Mark Davoust, a St. Charles resident, has been a County Board member for nine years.

His current term does not expire until 2016. Davoust said he wants to be the county clerk to bring a fresh attitude to the office.

The county clerk’s office is responsible not only for elections, but also for maintaining

vital records of births, deaths and marriages, a well as the tax extension records of levies of each local taxing body.

“I’ve always been involved in public service,” Cunningham said.

“I enjoy public service, and I would like another term. I am running on my qualifications and accomplishments. I brought this office into the 21st century. It is one of the most complex in the country.”

Cunningham said under his leadership, election equipment went from punch cards to a totally electronic system that is one of three in the state. The other two are Peoria County and the city of Peoria.

“We’re known as one of the forefront leaders in election technology,” Cunningham said.

Davoust said the clerk’s office under Cunningham has “taken an approach of being reactive instead of proactive.”

“I believe the clerk’s office is ... more than managing elections and data,” Davoust said.

“There is responsibility to be actively pursuing voter registration and voter turnout. I think it is essential for the success of our local government system of democracy to have the most people involved [in voting] as possible.”

Davoust said, as clerk, he

would pursue voter registrations and voters more actively.

“Term limits in today’s political world, the answer for a long time is, ‘We have term limits. They are called elections.’ That can be true, but not when you have turnouts that are barely reaching [percentages in] double digits.”

Davoust said rolling out the voter mobile and banners and flags prior to elections is not enough.

“There has to be a message coming out all the time, a relentless pursuit of educating people, informing people, encouraging people, prodding people to come out and vote,” Davoust said.

Davoust said it is the clerk’s job to push the message, at least to boost voter turnout to be more than 50 percent.

“Seventeen-year-olds can come to vote in the primary if

they will be 18 by Election Day in November,” Davoust said.

“There has to be education information in our schools about local government and responsibility and privilege of voting.”

Cunningham countered that with the Motor Voter Act, more people register to vote when they get their driver’s licenses.

“We already have deputy registrars. All the precinct committeemen take that training. We work with the League of Women voters,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham said it’s the clerk’s job to have fair and accurate elections.

“And that’s what we’re doing, having secure elections,” Cunningham said.

The winner of the primary will run in the general election on Nov. 4.

Judge wants city to submit list in case City attorney: ‘What I want is the project finished, and that’s what the city wants’

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The city of St. Charles will have to submit to Kane County Judge David Akemann a list of items that need to be completed or removed at Clifford Mcllvaine’s property.

Akemann made the request during a hearing Thursday on the case. Akemann previously allowed the city of St. Charles to proceed with the repairing

of Mcllvaine’s property at 605 Prairie St., including correcting an unfinished roof.

The city also will have to show why the items need to be completed or removed. Akemann is set to make a ruling on the list of items at the next court hearing on March 18.

Mcllvaine attorney Philip Piscopo said he was happy to hear the judge’s request.

“They have never been clear of what they expected of Mr. Mcllvaine,” Piscopo said.

The city sued Mcllvaine in 2010, pushing him to get the decades-long home improvement project finished, and a work schedule later was agreed upon in court. Mcllvaine was briefly jailed in 2012 when he refused to comply with the city’s plumbing code as part of the project.

City officials are asking permission to remove vehicles, construction materials and rubbish from the outside of Mcllvaine’s house, and

move it to a storage facility at his expense. Piscopo objected.

“They are trying to take the property maintenance code and make him comply to it, regardless of whether it has to do anything with the construction activity,” he said in addressing Akemann.

Attorney Phillip Luetkehans, representing the city of St. Charles, told Akemann that Mcllvaine has been in contempt of court for 18 months.

“Judge Mueller (previously assigned to the case) ruled that he would be in contempt of court until he finished the project,” Luetkehans said.

“We want him to comply with the consent decree. That’s all we are asking for. I don’t him in jail. What I want is the project finished, and that’s what the city wants.”

The project was supposed to be completed by the end of September 2012, according to the order.

ANGELO LoMONACO Born: Jan. 3, 1925 Died: Feb. 4, 2013 GENEVA – Angelo LoMonaco, of Geneva, and formerly of Oak Park, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 4. He was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Chicago, the son of Charles and Marietta (Lombardo) LoMonaco.

Angelo graduated from Tooley High School and attended Roosevelt University. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Angelo married Dorothy M. Kennedy in 1954, and the couple moved to Oak Park where they raised their two children, Pam and Mark. They moved to Geneva in 1985 and were surrounded by wonderful neighbors.

Angelo was a commercial real estate broker and appraiser, licensed in Illinois and Wisconsin.

For several years he was employed at R.J. Ward in Batavia. Angelo’s greatest pleasure was spending time at the family cottage in Lake Geneva with family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Mark and Pam; son-in-law, Frank Brewe; and cousins, Mary Grace and Maura LoMonaco.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St. (Route 38), Geneva.

Burial will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.

BATAVIA – Harold W. Deutscher, 77, of Batavia, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at his home.

He was born Oct. 5, 1936, in Chicago, the son of the late Ervin and Margaret Deutscher.

Harold was employed for 33 years at Economy Engineering in Bensenville before he started Skyjack in St. Charles. He was an avid woodworker, loved antiques and coin collecting, besides being a big Chicago Bears fan. But his real enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He especially enjoyed attending their sporting events.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Jacqueline, and their blended family, Mark (Andrea), Michael (Rita), Scott, Steve, Amanda Dzierlinga, Todd (Lori) Bruggeman and Lori Ann (Layton) Clark; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He also is survived by four sisters, Sharon Funk, Paula (John) Maynard, Chris (Jack) Krueger and Robyn (Mike) Olson; and one brother, Dennis Deutscher.

Bekah attended cosmetology school at Wheaton Hair Professionals. She worked as a hairstylist through her own business, as well as SportClips. Many of her clients shared that she was the only one who their children would sit for during a haircut and the only person they would trust to cut their own hair.

Bekah also was a nanny to four children in Arizona. Bekah showered love, knowledge, kindness and structure over them. She enjoyed taking the kids to storytime at the library, helping with their projects and homework and spending lots of playtime outdoors and in the pool.

Bekah had a light inside of her that shined through her love and beaming smile. She had a strong Christian faith and desire to grow her relationship with her Lord and Savior. She was devoted in her friendships and relationships.

Bekah enjoyed traveling, especially to sunny beaches. Bekah loved to laugh, particularly while watching “Ellen,” “New Girl” or “Friends.”

Country music ran through her veins. Bekah was always first in line for Country Thunder and first on the line to win tickets to any upcoming country concert.

Bekah loved cuddling and taking naps with her nephews, whom she adored. Bekah recently hiked Pinnacle Peak and Squaw Peak, truly enjoying the Arizona landscape and weather.

Bekah was an avid Blackhawks, White Sox and Packers fan.

Bekah delighted in giving her time to serve others through her church nursery, shaving heads for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and volunteering where needed.

Bekah will be missed by all those who were blessed to meet her and get a glimpse of her light and love.

A memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Shannon Hall at 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia, with a celebration of life to follow directly after.

“The Nanny McB Memorial Fund” has been created to honor Bekah’s life and love.

Bekah had an amazing love and kindness for kids. Contributions made to this fund will be used to support children in need as a way to honor Bekah’s life.

Man gets 4 years for drug charges

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A Geneva man was sentenced to four years in prison this week after being convicted of possessing up to 15 grams of cocaine, a felony.

Court records show Hector Romero-Luna, 37, pleaded guilty in December and was sentenced by Associate Kane County Judge Clint Hull.

Romero-Luna will get credit for time served and pay a fine of $8,185, records show.

Romero-Luna first was charged in December 2011 after Kane County SherHector Romero-Luna iff’s deputies raided a house he was renting on the 400 block of Chalmers Street, fol-

lowing a tip that drugs were being dealt from there, officials said.

He initially was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver, unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a firearm without a firearms owners identification card and with four counts of unlawful

possession of a controlled substance, records show.

Also arrested with Romero-Luna was his nephew, Julio Rubio, 23, who shared the rented house on Chalmers with him. Rubio pleaded guilty in August to felony charges of possession of a controlled substance. In October, Hull assessed a fine of $3,185 and sentenced Julio to 30 months of probation, court records show.

Village president: Elburn has bright future

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Village President Dave Anderson on Thursday described Elburn as a growing town, looking ahead to such highlights as the extension of Anderson Road, including over the railroad tracks that divide the town, as well as the recent approval of Elburn Station, which potentially would double the size of the village’s population.

Anderson delivered a State of the Village address at the Elburn Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Blackberry Masonic Lodge on Route 47 in downtown Elburn. He praised the village’s public works department for its work during the harsh winter season, saying that despite heavy snow, “the streets have been plowed,

and I think everybody here is grateful for that.” And he looked forward to the building of a new fire station on the north side of Route 38.

But there is always room for more. Asked about what new businesses might be coming in 2014, Anderson said he has had inquiries about a hardware store, and “I’ve really got my heart set on a florist shop.”

“At one point we had two,” Anderson said of florist shops in the village. “And they both did well.”

Peg Bendowski, the administrator of the Elburn Chamber, said of all the calls she gets from people, the top desire is a florist, as well as a bakery or a taxi service.

Anderson looked back on a busy 2013, mentioning the creation of an Economic Development Commission, the

approval of video gaming, the successful vote on Elburn Station, the completion of a comprehensive land-use plan, the hiring of a finance director and the welcoming of several new businesses, among other highlights.

He talked at length about the Anderson Road extension, emphasizing the importance of the bridge, as he said Union Pacific has plans to add a third track “that goes right through Elburn.”

“This very simply means more trains,” Anderson said, adding that while the trains are needed, “we want to get from one side of the tracks to the other.” And, with the new fire department headquarters set to be built close to Anderson Road, he said the bridge will provide a big help for firefighters.

Geneva wins 2013 Snowfighting Award

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva was recognized with a 2013 Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting Award from the Salt Institute for excellence in environmental consciousness and effective management in the storage of winter road salt, officials said.

Geneva was the only Kane municipality to receive the award, one of 10 in Illinois, and one of 90 in the U.S. and Canada, according to a list provided by the Salt Institute.

The institute is a nonprofit trade association dedicated to advocating the benefits of salt.

Geneva Streets Superintendent Chris Bong said he applied for the award a year ago and a representative from the Salt Institute came out during the summer to inspect their operation.

“They look at your plan and see what it looks like, your facilities, and they send the awards out during the winter,” Bong said.

The institute uses a checklist to grade safety and service, equipment, materials usage, snow plowing performance, tactical operations before and during a storm,

storage and safety, and environmental measures.

“Now it recognizes your plan and your ability to use and store salt responsibly,” he said. “Prioritizing roads is one of the main things.”

When the salt shortage became apparent earlier this year, Bong mixed a third of the street spread with sand, stretching out the city’s salt supply. The city also limits its salt use to the main roads, the snow routes, hills, around schools and stop sign intersections, Bong said.

“We do not do end-to-end on residential streets,” Bong said. “An ice storm is the only time we salt end-to-end.”

An average winter has 22 inches of snow, Bong said, but the current season has dumped 47 inches, with more forecast by this weekend.

“In a normal winter, we use 2,000 tons of salt. This year so far, we have used 3,000 tons,” Bong said.

The snow put the city’s prioritization plan to the test this winter, he said.

“Facebook and Twitter had positive feedback like crazy,” Bong said. “That’s kind of rare in this business. Usually you get more complaints than compliments.”

NIU to mark anniversary Plans moment of reflection, bells for Friday afternoon

By DEBBIE BEHRENDS dbehrends@shawmedia.com DEKALB – Northern Illinois University will remember the lives of five students lost Feb. 14, 2008, with a moment of reflection and the tolling of five bells at 3:06 p.m. Feb. 14.

Although most of today’s students were not on campus the day the five – Gayle Dubowski, Catalina Garcia, Julianna Gehant, Ryanne Mace and Daniel Parmenter – were killed by a gunman in Cole Hall, NIU maintains a commitment to remember them every year, said spokesman Paul Palian.

The sixth annual remembrance will be more subdued than last year, when friends and families of the deceased laid wreaths and flowers next to five marble slabs dedicated

to each of the fallen.

A memorial garden, adjacent to Cole Hall, is intended to be a place of peaceful reflection. It consists of a gently-curving walk set in a group of trees with a red granite reflection wall bearing the students’ names and a sculpture centerpiece. Benches are placed opposite the wall to encourage all to pause and remember, Palian said.

“NIU is committed to remembering and honoring the spirit of the cherished Huskies lost that day,” said NIU President Doug Baker, who is spending time with their families before the anniversary. “The bells serve as a reminder of the ‘Forward, Together Forward’ spirit of our students and community as we reflect and honor those lost.”

OPINIONS Bipartisan support for immigration reform on display in Washington

By EMILY GRAY editorial@kcchronicle.com At a time when our elected officials in Washington seem to be paralyzed by partisan politics, it is encouraging to see both sides of the aisle moving forward on an issue of critical national significance – immigration reform.

During his State of the Union address Jan. 28, President Barack Obama voiced his support for passing immigration reform in 2014, while Republicans in the House of Representatives released their “Standards on Immigration Reform” on Jan. 30, outlining a set of broad principles to make this issue a priority this year.

As the executive director of an organization that provides legal services to almost 4,000 immigrants in the Chicago area this year, this is a very

personal issue for me, my team and the people we serve.

In our Immigrant Legal Services Department, we encounter countless individuals and families hurt by the broken immigration system – families split apart, children left without parents, promising young people whose dreams are dashed and victims of crimes afraid to report the offenses to the police. These tragedies tear apart not only the immigrants and their families, but our communities and our country.

Like many other Christian leaders across the nation, I was disappointed that immigration reform was not brought to a vote in the House of Representatives in 2013, particularly given the widespread support among business, faith and law enforcement leaders across the U.S. The release of the Republican principles,

GUEST VIEW Emily Gray however, show that our elected officials in both parties finally have realized that fixing our broken immigration system is a priority.

Although broad, the Republican standards offer an important framework to begin Congress’ work on the issue.

The principles rightfully include improvements to border security and internal enforcement mechanisms, updates to our outdated legal immigration system, and a process through which immigrants that do not have legal status can earn legal presence here.

These immigrants – including those who were brought here as children – contribute untold benefits to our economy, our

community and our churches, and both our Christian faith and our American heritage instruct us to welcome them with open arms.

Immigration reform is an economic and civic issue, but even more so, it is a biblical one. Many of the most important figures in the history of the Christian faith were immigrants, refugees and travelers whom God used for his purposes. I hope that our federal legislators will help ensure the continuation of that tradition by making the United States a place where immigrants are welcomed.

I encourage U.S. Reps.

Roskam, Duckworth, Hultgren, Foster and the rest of our Congressmen and women in Washington to work together to make immigration reform a priority in 2014. Fixing our immigration system will require both courage and

compromise, and although we can expect that no one will be completely satisfied with the final product, we will continue to pray that our representatives will find a workable solution. The president’s comments and the Republican standards are positive steps forward, but now they must be followed by legislative action on immigration reform. We have waited long enough – the time to act is now.

How not to become the next Target BLOOMBERG NEWS Three days of hearings on Capitol Hill about the jaw-dropping data breaches at Target and Neiman Marcus brought to light one new apology and at least two familiar lessons.

The lessons are worth reiterating.

First, there’s fresh evidence that retailers have a hard time admitting when they’ve been hacked. Once they do, they find it hard to tell the whole story.

Target said nothing about the breach until an independent security researcher disclosed it on his blog. In its initial statement, the company said the attack involved 40 million

card accounts. Three weeks later, Target revealed that other records affecting 70 million customers also had been stolen.

Finally, after repeating “how sorry we are that this happened,” a Target executive divulged that the breach had lasted three days longer than initially admitted. Neiman Marcus has been similarly evasive.

This is the kind of slow-motion, piecemeal response that infuriates consumers. A uniform federal standard mandating how retailers report data breaches, which some in Congress are advocating, would be an improvement over the varying state-bystate disclosure laws now

in effect.

The second lesson is to speed adoption of smartchip cards, which have encrypted chips embedded in them and often require a password to use.

Merchants and issuers are expected to finally adopt the technology in the United States by October 2015.

Target, commendably, now plans to accelerate its transition and have the gear in place by early next year.

As other retailers watch Target contend with investigations, lawsuits and the ire of consumers and investors alike, doing the same might start looking cheaper and cheaper.

Emergency response course starts in April

‘CONSTANTLY CONSISTENT’ Geneva girls gymnastics starts strong at regional at home

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva girls gymnasts were on the verge of checking the latest item off their itinerary Thursday, seizing a safe lead at the midway point of a home regional in the comfortable surroundings of the Mack Olson gym.

“Cozy” encapsulates these Vikings in a few other ways, namely their camaraderie. The group that combined for a 73.3 team score through the vault and bars – nearly six points better than the U-46 co-op – contains just six members. The meet ended too late for this edition. “Definitely it’s a lot more stress, because you know that you have to be healthy,” Geneva senior Dominique Brognia said of the team dynamic this week.

“You can’t have any injuries, and you have to hit your routines perfectly because the pressure’s on you. You don’t have too many people, but, I mean, I definitely like having a smaller team.”

The top five finishers in each event and the all-around advanced to Tuesday’s Wheaton Warrenville South Sectional.

Megan Beitzel won the vault for Geneva with a 9.6, starting a sweep that included teammates Claire Ginsberg (9.55), Brognia (9.475), McKenna Merges (9.425) and Grace Ginsberg (9.3).

Claire Ginsberg captured the bars title with a 9.4, and will be joined at sectionals by Brognia (9.05, third) and Beitzel (8.45, fifth).

Geneva, which established a program-best team score of 149.15 at the Upstate Eight Conference meet last week, won the Illinois’ Best Invitational at Wheaton Warrenville South in late December.

By then, the Vikings already had strong premonitions that a special season was upon them.

With much of the nucleus returning from a fifth-place state team in 2013 – plus the addition of freshman Claire Ginsberg, younger sister of Grace – it was simply a matter of trusting their

“We just are constantly consistent with our routines,” Geneva senior Claire Scatterday said this week. “We just try to focus on sticking every time and keeping our routines clean, which helps us get really nice, high scores as a team.”

It’s been a banner week for the graceful sports set at Geneva. On Saturday, the competitive dance team captured the 2A state championship at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, and was greeted by the student body during a parade through the school halls during first

hour Monday morning.

Brognia’s younger sister, sophomore Diana, is part of the dance team. The siblings occasionally talk shop about the overlap between their sports, which for Dominique largely is limited to the floor exercise.

“A lot of the lines and pointed toes and the arms and stuff like that, just to look nice and pretty,” Dominique Brognia said. “That definitely is the same.”

Vikings gymnasts still aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves, though, as evidenced by their efficiency in helping prepare the

gym for competition.

“It’s very quick. Very quick,” Vikings coach Kim Hostman said this week. “We set up the whole floor and the bars and everything down there. It used to take us two hours. Now it takes us about 40 minutes, if that.”

At sectionals, such heavy lifting will be left to Wheaton Warrenville South athletes or administrators.

Tonight, the St. Charles coop will compete for sectional berths at the York Regional. On Tuesday, Batavia sophomore Megan McGee advanced from the Wheaton Warrenville South Regional in the vault (thirdplace finish) and all-around (fifth).

At-large qualifiers for each event and the all-around will be announced Monday.

GENEVA – Cougars fans exercised great faith well before their club became a Class-A Cubs affiliate in September 2012.

Being a diehard when more “L” flags than “W” flags are part of the prospectus is one thing. It’s quite another when you don’t know which players you’ll be rooting for until April.

Single-game tickets for the 2014 Cougars season went on sale Thursday, a few weeks before Cubs minor leaguers begin spring trainAlex ing. In lieu of Suarez scratching your head to predict the roster, envision a group that’s wet behind the ears.

“We’ve gotten to a point in our organization where we’ve gotten pretty young and we’ve been the youngest at most of the affiliates,” said Cubs assistant director of player development and international scouting Alex Suarez. “This is what we’ve been trying to get to as an organization, is get younger but also bring in impact talent.

“To say at this point who will end up being here, we’ve still got [two] months, but it’ll be a young, dynamic group of kids, because we’ve got some young kids coming that are pretty interesting as evidenced by the club that played in Mesa and Boise this year.”

Center fielder Shawon Dunston Jr., who turned 21 Wednesday, is likely to fit the bill. Naturally, spring training goes a long way in determining a player’s landing spot, but after batting .290 with 12 steals in 49 games at Short-A Boise in 2013, Kane County is the logical next step on the ladder.

“As long as he keeps hitting the benchmarks of his player plan and he continues progressing through spring training, he obviously has a shot to compete for a spot on this club,” Suarez said.

Baseball America rated a few players who spent significant time with Boise last season among the Cubs’ top 2014 prospects.

Right-hander Paul Blackburn, a 2012 first-round pick, headlined that list at No. 12.

Righty Dillon Maples – who pitched with the Cougars in parts of 2013 – is 18th, while second baseman Danny Lockhart ranked 30th. Lockhart also is a major league legacy; his dad, Keith, spent most of his 10-year career as an Atlanta Braves’ second baseman.

Farrell, a Cubs amateur scouting assistant, attended the final three games of the Shane World Series Farrell last fall. Farrell is the son of John Farrell, who managed the Red Sox to

a title against the St. Louis Cardinals in six games.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein served as Red Sox general manager for Boston’s past two World Series winners – in 2004 and 2007 – and Farrell is optimistic his own organization can capture that success. Ideally, his dad will be on hand to see it, returning his son’s favor from 2013.

“I mean, hopefully we’re there one day and he’s pulling for us, but it was a pretty special time and a great experience to be there in October and to be with my whole family when they

won it,” Farrell said. “It was great. It was a great experience. Looking forward to the day that we’re there, as well.”

Giving back: Farrell, Suarez and newly minted player development and international scouting assistant Kenny Socorro – a Cougars coach last season – offered tutelage Saturday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark as part of a Cougars youth coaching clinic.

“This is a great experience, something I can relate to and think back to when I was growing up,” said Farrell, a former college pitcher. “I’m sure a few of my coaches went to events like this and it paid off for me, so it’s great to help them out any way I can.”

Ainsworth finds his way back Vikings to introduce Hall of Fame inductees at basketball game tonight

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Jeff Ainsworth returned to his alma mater in 2008, assisting the Geneva football program’s freshman team.

Originally, his plan was to re-establish his Vikings ties long before then.

“That was the year of my 40th high school reunion, so that was kind of my joke with everyone – ‘Well, it took me 40 years, but I finally made it back,” Ainsworth said.

Ainsworth, a Class of 1968 Geneva football and wrestling standout, is among three inductees tonight to the Geneva High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Although Ainsworth said he unsuccessfully tried to launch his career as a teacher and coach at Geneva after completing his college football career at Northern Illinois University, he ended up deeply satisfied by his long tenure at nearby West Chicago High School.

“I wouldn’t trade the 37 years working with children there for anything,” said Ainsworth, who remains an assistant in West Chicago’s track and field program.

“Just awesome relationships. [West Chicago] is not known for its athletics too

Ainsworth was a stalwart offensive and defensive lineman on legendary Vikings coach Jerry Auchstetter’s first Geneva team in 1967, helping Geneva’s program climb out of a malaise to finish with a 6-2 record.

Auchstetter also helped groom Ainsworth into a wrestler who finished with a 25-3 senior season, although a season-ending loss to an opponent from Mooseheart “has stuck with me a little bit” over the years, he said.

Ainsworth wrestled at 180 pounds as a sophomore but joked that he put on 40 pounds over the next couple of summers thanks to working at Geneva’s Dairy Queen.

Bulking up allowed him to develop into a starting lineman at NIU, where he played for three different coaches during his career.

Ainsworth’s coaching career at West Chicago included an early highlight – in his second year, 1974, he was an assistant for the West Chicago football team that went 13-0 and won a Class 3A state championship.

“Our toughest competition that year was Geneva, and we beat them 14-7 at Geneva [in the regular season],” Ainsworth said. “My dad wouldn’t talk to me after that for two weeks. My dad was a big Viking fan.”

Ainsworth, who spent five years as West Chicago football’s varsity coach from ’84 to ’88, lives in Batavia, and his son, Jake, played cornerback for the Bulldogs in the mid-2000s.

Ainsworth said his reconnection with Geneva’s football program in 2008 came thanks to his relationships with Vikings coach Rob Wicinski – also an NIU football alum – and Vikings freshman coach Kevin Bell, a longtime friend.

Tonight’s hall of fame induction has the potential to play havoc with Ainsworth’s emotions.

“My sisters are going to be here, and we just spent our first Christmas together in a long, long, long time, so them coming here [from San Antonio] is pretty neat,” Ainsworth said. “And my son will be here of course, so, I don’t know, I’m honored.

I’m very honored. As long as I don’t have to talk, I’ll be fine.”

Ainsworth’s fellow 2014 inductees will be Jim Klein and Jackie Santacaterina.

Klein (Class of 1990) was a standout football and track and field athlete who was a college receiver at Western Illinois and, later, Illinois under former coach Lou Tepper. He is a professor of education and counseling at Illinois-Springfield.

Santacaterina (Class of 2006) excelled in soccer and basketball for the Vikings and later advanced on to professional soccer for the Chicago Red Stars. Santacaterina, who played college soccer at Illinois, is founder of “TRUE,” a sports performance training program that helps mentor young athletes.

Girls basketball playoff seeds released The IHSA on Thursday released the seeds for the Class 4A Addison Trail Girls Basketball Sectional, which includes each of the four Tri-Cities schools.

Batavia (No. 3) and Geneva (No. 5) are near the top of the 21team sectional, with St. Charles North (No. 9) and St. Charles East (No. 11) next. Batavia is one of four regional hosts within the sectional; pairings are set to be released at 4 p.m. today, and play begins Feb. 17.

In Class 3A, Kaneland is part of the five-team Plano Regional, while Aurora Central Catholic, Rosary and top-seeded Burlington Central help are in the six-team ACC Regional.

Both regionals are part of the Belvidere Sectional. St. Francis, a regional host, and Wheaton Academy are part of the Glenbard South Sectional.

Aurora Christian, the Chronicle area’s lone 2A team, is the second seed in the Ottawa Marquette Regional.

The Eagles begin postseason play against the host Crusaders in a regional semifinal at 8 p.m.

Huskies taking advantage of fertile South Florida recruiting ground

By STEVE NITZ snitz@shawmedia.com When Northern Illinois football coach Joe Novak arrived in DeKalb before the 1996 season, he knew that in order to turn around the program, he would have to recruit the Chicago area well.

Novak did just that, bringing in players such as Ryan Diem, Michael Turner and Justin McCareins.

Jerry Kill and Dave Doeren came in and did the same.

Rod Carey, the current coach, holds the same philosophy, and his second recruiting class, which was announced Wednesday, contained nine prospects from the Land of Lincoln.

Illinois always should be NIU’s bread and butter, no matter who is leading the Huskies’ charge.

However, part of NIU’s recent success on the field has been a result of taking advantage of the fertile recruiting ground in South Florida, and the Huskies did

so again this year.

Current Huskies players who hail from South Florida include receivers Tommylee Lewis (Riviera Beach) and Angelo Sebastiano (Coconut Creek), as well as linebacker Jamaal Bass (Miramar).

All three should be key contributors to next season’s team.

In the Class of 2014, five South Florida players signed with NIU – receivers Christian Blake (Fort Lauderdale), David Senior (Fort Lauderdale) and Ezra Saf-

fold (West Palm Beach), as well as defensive backs Deion Hallmon (Weston) and Albert Smalls (Miramar).

The Chicago area is NIU’s backbone when it comes to bringing in talent, but Carey said the Orange Bowl appearance in 2012 helped expand the Huskies brand nationally, as well.

“I think that that opened the door, not just down [in South Florida], but across the rest of the regions, including our own back door here,” he said. “That real-

ly opened the door for conversations that maybe we hadn’t had before with other people.”

And even with signature programs such as Florida, national championship Florida State and the University of Miami, not to mention a school such as Central Florida, which is coming off of a BCS bowl win, recruiting talent from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, there still is plenty of good prospects left over for the non-BCS programs.

step of the way. They’re 3-02 on this trip, with three victories in their last four games. In their 2-0 victory over the NHL-leading, but slumping, Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night, the Hawks were at their championship finest – timely goals from Marian Hossa and Jonathan Toews, great goaltending from Corey Crawford and a playoff-level focus on critical penalty kills. ‘’That’s something that really wasn’t present for awhile ... in January,’’ Toews said. ‘’The last five games or so it’s really come back.’’

The Blackhawks have been the best road team in the NHL (118-67-32) since Quenneville became their head coach in 2008. But they’ve been particularly good on the extended circus and ice-show trips – 13-1-4 in the past two seasons.

That’s arguably an indication of the special chemistry the Hawks have had in their Stanley Cup-winning seasons, when they’ve played their best at the most critical situations. These guys play together well – whether the road trip takes them to the Honda Center, the Vegas Strip or the Dexter Lake Club.

“I don’t think it’s as much Vegas as it is being with the guys,’’ Seabrook said. “Being able to have a couple of days with nothing to do but have some fun, play some cards, have some beers – it’s good for our guys.

“Comaraderie is such a big thing in this game.

The Blackhawks have done a good job – starting at Notre Dame this year, taking us to Vegas – of doing little things that bring guys together and allow us to have a little fun.’’

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Asked what he did during the Blackhawks’ two-day break in Las Vegas last week, Brent Seabrook just smiled and shook his head – the universal sign for ‘’What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’’ apparently.

“There’s a lot to do in Vegas,’’ Seabrook said Thursday after the Hawks practiced at Jobing.com Arena in preparation for tonight’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes. “Get away from the game a little bit and have a little break. We’ve played a lot of games. The Blackhawks have done a good job of breaking it up and give back to us a little bit and have a little fun. I think it’s good.’’

The Vegas trip isn’t the sole reason the Blackhawks have started to recapture their early season form through five games of the sixgame ‘’ice show’’ road trip.

But even coach Joel Quenneville acknowledged the side trip as a factor in the team’s resurgence that not coincidentally has occurred during a two-week road trip.

“It’s good bonding for the guys [on the road],’’ Quenneville said. ‘’It seems like you get that excitement on the bench and in the locker room. The guys are together 24/7. We’ve got a close-knit group here where spending a little extra time with one another, there are no distractions. Everybody’s focused in the right areas.

“I think that diversion [of] taking the group to Vegas certainly is a nice change of scenery. It’s healthy for [everybody].’’

Heading into the trip, the Hawks were 4-3-5 in January.

“We were kind of wondering going into it how we were going to be,’’ Quenneville said.

U.S., Canada hope to brawl for gold in women’s hockey

By DAVE SHEININ The Washington Post SOCHI, Russia – Imagine that the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys were so vastly superior to every other team in the NFL that they had combined to win the past 19 Super Bowls, ultimately forcing the commissioner to change the rules to give other teams a chance. Imagine they played each other upward of 10 times a year, allowing their disgust for each other to simmer and stew. Imagine that, on occasion, the animosity overwhelmed them and the respective players paired off in full-scale, 11-on-11 brawls.

Imagine all that, then picture them all on ice skates, with ponytails hanging out the backs of their helmets, and you have a pretty good idea of what it looks like when the U.S. and Canadian women’s hockey teams face off. And if the gloves stay on during the 2014 Sochi Olympics tourna-

ment, which begins Saturday, it will be because the stakes are too high to risk the penalty minutes or suspensions – not because everybody suddenly decided to get along.

“This rivalry,” said Team USA forward Meghan Duggan, “fuels our fire every day.”

This may be the best rivalry you’ve never heard about – arguably the fiercest in all of international hockey and in all of women’s team sports. It was only six weeks ago that a fiveon-five brawl broke out at the end of the Americans’ 4-1 victory in Grand Forks, N.D., in the fifth of a seven-game, pre-Sochi tune-up series. As the arena DJ quickly cued up the theme from “Rocky,” the players went at each other, some wrestling on the ice, some on their skates trading haymakers. When it was all sorted out, the referees had called 10 major penalties for fighting, as well as assorted minors.

“If [Canadian] players are

going to take cheap shots at our players,” U.S. coach Katey Stone said at the time, “there’s going to be an answer for that. We will not get pushed around.”

It was the second time during the seven-game “friendly” series that the American and Canadian women staged an all-out brawl, the other one coming in October in Burlington, Vt., when the Canadians objected to a U.S. skater running into their goalie.

“It just got pretty intense,” Canadian veteran Meaghan Mikkelson said of the brawls.

“We play each other a lot.

But a good rivalry requires mutual relevance, in addition to mutual hatred, in order to take off – and the international dominance of the Americans and Canadians represents an instance of overkill. Since 1990, when the sport’s international gov-

erning body introduced the women’s version, the U.S. and Canada have won all 19 world championships – 13 by the Canadians, but four of the past six by the Americans – including the four Olympic Games (the U.S. in 1998, Canada in 2002, 2006 and 2010).

It reached the point – after the Vancouver Games, when the teams drubbed their preliminary-round opponents by an aggregate score of 72-3, before Canada beat the U.S., 2-0, in the gold-medal game – that Jacques Rogge, at the time the president of the International Olympic Committee, warned that the sport could lose its Olympic standing unless it became more competitive.

Partly as a result, the Sochi Games will feature a tweaked format, with the world’s four top-ranked teams – the U.S., Canada, Finland and Switzerland – grouped together in the same division. But to ensure they don’t all knock each other out of the tournament

in the preliminary round, all four teams from Group A are already qualified for the medal round, with the prelims only mattering for seeding purposes.

In addition to preventing – at least theoretically – a rash of 18-0 scores, the unique grouping ensures that the U.S. and Canada will face each other in the preliminary round, a matchup that comes at 4:30 p.m. Sochi time Wednesday at the Shayba Arena.

In the lead-up to Sochi, both the U.S. and Canadian teams have tried to lay claim to the underdog mantle, the Americans citing the Canadians’ historic dominance, the Canadians citing the Americans’ recent success – including four wins in the recent seven-game tune-up series.

But when it comes to what matters most, the Olympic gold, it is the U.S. that has the added motivation, having lost three straight to the Canadians.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ELGIN – The Renz Addiction Counseling Center, a Elgin-based nonprofit organization, has expanded substance abuse treatment services for minority women.

With funding providing by a federal grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, minority women ages 18 and older will have access to trauma informed services that will provide free substance-abuse treatment, mental-health counseling, psychiatric services, case management, a recovery coach, HIV testing and counseling, parenting support and education, free childcare, access to transportation assistance, and other supportive services to decrease barriers to treatment and increase their ability to begin recovery, states a news release.

“The impact of trauma on women and the lack of access to integrated substance abuse treatment, mental health and primary health care, HIV prevention and other support services can create a barrier to requesting or receiving help,” said Director of Clinical Services and SUPPORT Project Director Colleen Koncilja in the release. “The SUPPORT program will fill

this need.”

The program is a collaboration between local agencies, including the Renz Center, Breaking Free Inc., Community Crisis Center, Mutual Ground and VNA Health Care.

SUPPORT program services are free to eligible minority women and are offered in both English and Spanish. Services can be accessed at two locations – the Renz Center in Elgin by calling 847-742-3545 and Breaking Free in Aurora at 630-897-1003.

The Renz Center provides a continuum of care dedicated to the prevention, intervention and treatment of addictive behaviors related to alcohol, drugs and gambling, states the release. Services range from prevention programs for youth in the schools to outpatient treatment programs for adolescents and adults. Offices are located in Elgin, St. Charles and Streamwood.

Renz Addiction Counseling Center is funded, in part, by the federal government, Central Kane County United Way, The Illinois Department of Human Services, Hanover Township, Geneva and St. Charles 708 boards and other local community organizations.

Local home-care agency receives trusted provider distinction KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com SOUTH ELGIN – Local Home Care agency Visiting Angels of South Elgin received the Certified – Trusted Provider distinction from Home Care Pulse, a third-party research company that created the Certified – Trusted Provider distinction to measure client satisfaction in areas such as timeliness of caregivers, compassion of caregivers, services being provided as promised and overall quality of care.

The South Elgin office has been recognized as one of the nation’s best home care agencies, states the release.

“We started our agency with humble beginnings, and in 2013 we celebrated our 10-year anniversary,” said South Elgin office owner Arlene Petersen in the release. “Throughout these years, we have set high standards for ourselves as an employer and for our caregivers as well. ... .”

Hallie Gaitsch of Batavia recently represented her school at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Festival in Peoria, the group’s highest honor for high school musicians.

Ford’s Fiesta garners steady, growing buyer interest With no fanfare, Ford introduced the Fiesta in model year 2010.

Sales totaled 23,273 that year and improved to 71,073 in 2013. That 2013 sales total of Fiestas in North America represents a modest percentage of Ford’s total sales of 2.4 million vehicles.

Fiesta has not been wildly popular in the marketplace and the 2014 model continues its pleasant but unremarkable disposition. An $18,800 Titanium hatchback model was in for a recent test week.

Fiesta prices start this year at $14,100 for a base model and top out at $21,400 for an ST, so the Titanium was right in the middle as far as pricing is concerned and represents what is good and bad about this subcompact, front-wheel-drive, fourdoor, five-occupant, inline four-cylinder car. Hatchbacks cost $500 more than sedans, no matter the model chosen. Except for a 1-liter EcoBoost in the SE sedan and hatchback models, the base S, Titanium and ST models are equipped with a 1.6-liter engine. The ST’s is tweaked to produce 197 horsepower, otherwise buyers will have to settle for 120.

Transmissions are five-speed manual or six-speed automatics. The test Titanium had the automatic mated to the 120-horsepower engine and it did OK on the interstate with three adults aboard and also was adequate on secondary roads covered with recent snowfall. But, distance is required when passing slower traffic, and care must be taken when navigating through heavier doses of snow.

This could be good as the Fiesta does not encourage bold, adventurous action on roadways. Safety is almost forced on the driver. What is true of the Fiesta, as far as power is concerned, could be said of all the subcompact competition.

Fuel usage strikes a good note as the 2,575-pound car averaged 33.7 miles per gallon during the test week with an average of two persons aboard in rough winter weather. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the Titanium model at 32 mpg city and 39 mpg highway. The car has a 12.4 gallon tank for unleaded regular fuel.

Acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour will take 10 seconds. Braking from 60 mph to a stop will take 130 to 135 feet on dry pavement. Brakes are discs in front and drums in the rear. The 16-inch painted aluminum wheels support all-terrain tires.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper not have the electronic nanosecond suspension system of luxury vehicles costing three times as much. Fairly tight as far as insulating factors are concerned, there is little or no engine noise or sound intrusion from outside traffic. The suspension system depends on struts in front and a twist beam in the rear.

The rear seats do not fold flat but angle upwards in this hatchback to expand storage space to 25.4 cubic feet. The leaning seats allow for a relatively flat load floor.

A cargo cover is cardboard or a facsimile and can easily be removed (undo ties to two hooks and lift off) if it gets in the way of storage purposes.

The rear portion of the floor can be lifted up to gain access to the temporary wheel and tire, or removed for cleaning purposes. This is a neat touch by Ford.

That rear floor got removed, shaken and

cleaned several times during the test week as the cargo area received a lot of use.

The 40-watt, four-speaker standard sound system is weak and so is the optional 80-watt, six-speaker system that is standard on upgrade Fiestas, such as the Titanium. Volume is controlled by a knob, and this is sensible. Tuning is controlled by punching a color touch screen. There are presets for AM-FM-SiriusXM satellite radio. Fiesta gets a single compact disc and MP3 players and two auxiliary input connection.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles, and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain as well as roadside assistance.

This car is not a rerun of the company’s noisy 1970s Fiesta. Seats are firm and comfortable in front. Fit and finish are above average. Leg room is OK in front but cramped, as expected in a subcompact, in the rear.

With the onset of the nation’s economic collapse in 2008, Ford Motor Co. suffered a $14.9 billion loss in 2009.

Looking ahead to 2010, Ford had the Fiesta, a nameplate that was put to rest in North America in the 1980s, returning to the automotive market. Ford had no money to do a traditional launch of the subcompact. A traditional launch meant television (Super Bowl, World Series), radio, magazine and newspaper advertising, plus inviting automotive writers to numerous costly events.

“Our back was against the wall,” Ford’s marketing chief Jim Farley said at the time. What could the company do?

Well, Farley launched the Fiesta in a non-traditional manner. It was through the social media of the day and that was bloggers. Facebook and Twitter came later. Ford called the launch the Fiesta Movement as 100 cars were delivered to bloggers for their thoughts and opinions before the 2010 Fiesta hit the market.

Today Ford promotes the Fiesta in traditional (newspapers, magazines, radio, television) and non-traditional ways.

The Fiesta will be on display in the Ford booth at the Feb. 8-17 Chicago Auto Show.

WASHINGTON – Even today, there’s a lingering stigma about women who choose to place their children for adoption. Unnatural, people say, and jump to conclusions about the woman’s lifestyle, character and state of mind. If times have changed, it’s only in that the stigma used to attach unilaterally to unwed mothers.

And that stigma was strong enough to keep Philomena Lee silent for 50 years.

The world now knows about Philomena Lee. In 2009, journalist Martin Sixsmith published a book about the son whom she bore in an Irish convent, and whom the nuns tore from her when he was 3 years old and sent off to America with a new set of adoptive parents. In 2013, the book became the basis for a film starring Judi Dench, who has been nominated for a best-actress Oscar for playing the role of Philomena – more or less.

“I was a bit of a dumb cluck in the film,” the real Philomena says, chuckling. “Some of those things I didn’t say. But it had to bring a bit of laughter into it. Because it’s so sad, you know.”

Philomena is now 80. She was sitting in a Ritz-Carlton in Washington last week with her daughter, Jane, as part of her ongoing campaign to drum up support for legal changes that would allow children adopted from Ireland to access records that would help them to trace their biological parents. It’s part of a wave of publicity in the wake of the film that will crest at the Oscars, which the two women will attend on March 2.

The story of Philomena Lee inspired an Oscar-nominated film and thrust her into the role of global advocate. (“She didn’t want to meet me at first – but it went absolutely fine”) to the gown she got to wear when she spoke onstage at the Golden Globes (“They let me keep it!”), Philomena is living out a fairy-tale ending to a tragic and traumatic story – something she could never have imagined in 2003 when she finally confessed to Jane that, before Jane and her brother were born, she had had another son.

Once upon a time, before there was Guatemala, before there was Ethiopia, before there was China, before there was Romania, there was Ireland – a country to which Americans traveled when they wanted to adopt children.

And before there was Angelina Jolie, before there was Madonna, there was Jane Russell, a star who went abroad to adopt in 1950 and brought 15-month-old Thomas home after reaching an agreement with his mother.

The resulting scandal about baby-buying made headlines and shook up the Irish administration, but didn’t eradicate the draconian practices of the church, which had made itself responsible for the problem of unwed

mothers and took it upon itself to treat these supposedly horrible sinners – in some cases teenage victims of rape or incest – with the strictness it felt they deserved.

If the film takes liberties with the present-day Philomena, it sticks to the facts of her past. Pregnant after a chance encounter with a man she met at a fair, she was turned over to the nuns, in a dormitory where unwed mothers spent three years delivering their children and then working at manual labor – Philomena worked in the laundry room – for the church’s profit. The mothers did get to see their children every day, but they didn’t always fully realize that those children were offered for adoption, as orphans, to American couples. Thus it was that Anthony Lee, age 3, was whisked off to America where he became Michael Hess and grew up in St. Louis. Philomena never saw him again.

Like her son, Philomena’s story has made its way in the world in all kinds of ways she couldn’t have expected. Sixsmith’s book focuses largely on the biography of the son, Michael/Anthony, who became the chief legal counsel to the Republican National Committee in the 1980s before dying of AIDS-related complications at 43.

The movie, adapted by Jeff Pope and Steve Coogan, goes a step farther into fiction and depicts Dench’s Philomena and Coogan’s Sixsmith going together on an oddball road trip to Washington in search of Philomena’s son – a trip that never actually happened.

It also, predictably, takes dramatic license with some of the story’s highlights: having the Sixsmith character, for instance, discover on the Internet, while sitting in the hotel breakfast room, that Anthony has died.

“The way we found out

wasn’t much better,” says Jane. Both Anthony and Philomena repeatedly returned to the convent over the years, trying to find out more information about each other. The nuns told them they weren’t able to help. Finally, Jane was able to gain some traction.

“I’m sorry to tell you he’s dead,” Philomena says the nun told them.

Philomena’s story has highlighted one side of the often ill-understood phenomenon of adoption. Having decided to come forward after so many years, she receives abundant messages and queries from around the world.

However, the letters come not from other mothers, but, overwhelmingly, from adoptees – particularly people who were born in the convent.

The book also helps dismantle the stubborn myth that silence is the best policy; that children should be sheltered from the facts of adoption; and that love and material comfort will conquer all.

She has made her peace with the church, even though the deceptions continued until the very end of the story.

Having learned that her son had died, and that he had chosen to have his ashes buried in Ireland at the place of his birth, she and Jane traveled to the abbey again, but were told that there was no other information about him.

“And then we met Martin Sixsmith in between times,” Jane says, and “he found all the American side of things.”

The following year, they returned and told the nun they had located Anthony/Michael’s family. “And the nun went to the cupboard and gave me all the paperwork that she could have given me the year before,” Jane says.

“But had she given it to me the year before, there would have been no book, no film, none of this. So, they really do have themselves to blame.”

Dear Reader: Everything that happens to a woman’s breasts can also happen to a man’s breasts, including cancer. Enlargement of a man’s breast is known as gynecomastia (guy-ni-co-MAST-ia). It is usually harmless and is often reversible.

It’s an oversimplification, but basically a breast is filled with breast glands and fat. Some men have prominent breasts because they are overweight. The extra fat has deposited not only around the belly but also inside the breasts.

That’s not really gynecomastia – that’s just fat breasts.

True gynecomastia is caused by an enlargement of the breast’s glandular tissues, not by excess fat. The glandular tissue is concentrated under the nipple, so the nipple area is enlarged more than the rest of the breast.

Gynecomastia actually is quite common in kids. About half of male babies have it, though it goes away. Then half (or more) of boys experience it at puberty. It is usually mild and short-lived.

It is less common in adulthood. But even then, the breast enlargement is usually mild and painless – although some men do complain of tenderness.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The most common causes of gynecomastia in adult men are liver disease and certain medications: • Liver disease. One of the liver’s many purposes is to break down estrogens. Estrogens are called the “female hormones” and androgens the “male hormones,” but the fact is that men’s bodies make some estrogens and women’s bodies make some androgens.

Liver disease, especially alcoholic cirrhosis, weakens a man’s ability to break down estrogens.

As a result, estrogen levels in the blood often rise, which enlarges the breasts. If liver function improves, the breasts can return to their usual size.

• Medications. Certain drugs may cause breast enlargement.

These include some drugs used for heart disease and high blood pressure (spironolactone, digoxin, calcium channel blockers).

Some drugs that treat ulcers and heartburn (such as cimetidine) do it. Some drugs that treat prostate cancer or enlarged prostate (flutamide and finasteride) do it,

because they reduce androgen levels. Even the anti-anxiety drug diazepam can do it.

Finally, herbal remedies that contain phytoestrogens (plant-derived estrogens) can cause breast enlargement. So, can street drugs such as marijuana, amphetamines and heroin. Men who take or abuse male steroid hormones can also develop gynecomastia.

If a person stops taking the offending drug or medication, the breasts will return to their normal size.

Less common causes of gynecomastia include testicular cancer, an overactive thyroid gland and testosterone levels that are declining with age. These diverse disorders have two things in common: low androgen levels and high estrogen levels.

Breast enlargement in men is usually more worrisome than serious. Still, see your doctor to rule out a more dangerous cause.

And if you feel a lump inside your breast, as contrasted with just soft swelling, definitely check with your doctor. Although it is rare, men can get breast cancer.

Dear Nicole: Show this information to Mom and Dad and they might allow you to have a little spending money.

International Communications Research conducted a survey and found that 84 percent of teens between 13 and 17 receive spending money from their parents as needed. Forty-one percent of the surveyed teens receive an allowance, and 80 percent of them said the allowance was tied to household chores.

Is it possible that your parents would agree to this arrangement? Discuss this with Mom and Dad. I agree that teens should have a “little spending money.”

Dr. Wallace: When a person passes out from drinking, is it better to let him sleep it off or to have him walk it off?

My boyfriend gets into a lot of chug-a-lug contests with his buddies, and he keeps drinking until he collapses. I always let him sleep it off in my apartment.

His sister thinks that his friends and I should encourage him to walk it off instead. She thinks it’s dangerous to let a drunken binge drinker sleep it off.

When a large amount of alcohol is consumed in a very short time (drinking a full bottle of vodka or other spirits in 10 minutes, chugging a large quantity of beer, etc.), the blood alcohol level rises rapidly and can cause the part of the brain that controls the breathing to slow or shut down.

This is known as alcohol poisoning and can cause the drinker to fall into a deep sleep, which can result in death. When a person passes out because of chugging alcohol, he or she should never be allowed to sleep it off. The person should be kept awake by any means possible and taken to the nearest medical facility.

Your boyfriend is highly competitive, but he could die while proving he’s the fastest “chug-a-lugger” in Illinois.

Your concern for his well-being needs to go beyond helping him walk off his next binge.

I urge you and his sister to try to convince him to get help. Alcoholics Anonymous would be a great place to start. The number can be found in the white pages of your local telephone directory.

If you can’t convince him that he’s in serious trouble, stop seeing him.

True, if you wish to be successful at the top level of anything, you must be able to handle the pressure. This applies even at the bridge table. But there is another form of pressure in bridge – pre-emptive bids, which pressure the opponents by removing bidding space.

Look at the South hand. After two passes, what would you open?

In the first two positions, one heart would be a popular choice.

But after two passes, the dynamic changes. North-South’s chances of making game have diminished. It is time to pressure West.

Open three hearts! Or, if that is too rich for you, bid two hearts.

Now look at the full deal.

After a three-heart opening, West would make a takeout double and East would advance with three spades. This contract would go down after three rounds of hearts are played, but West would never pass with such a strong hand. He would carry his side into deeper waters.

At the table, South opened one heart, West doubled, North responded one no-trump, East passed, South rebid two hearts, and this ended the auction when West very cautiously passed.

The defense was excellent, though. West led the spade ace: three, six, queen. West, not fooled, continued with the spade king, and East dropped his nine, a suit-preference signal for diamonds (the higher-ranking of the other two side suits). West cashed his diamond ace, gave his partner a diamond ruff, got back on lead with the club ace, and gave East a second ruff for down one.
