A

s I was settling into my Sunday this past week, I noticed the snow had begun falling. And falling. And falling.

As a photojournalist, I usually don’t get to enjoy snow days.

The sight of snow sometimes sets me into a panic that I need to hurry out and get some photos for the print edition of the paper, as well as something to

put online as soon as possible.

Weather is always a top news story.

But this Sunday was different.

On top of deciding to shoot photos – in a less-panicked fashion – I decided I also wanted to get some video.

Luckily, I had a personal driver for the day who loves to drive in the snow, so I – of

course – was not driving and videotaping at the same time. I set my phone on the dashboard and taped as we drove south into St. Charles on Route 25.

I was in the comfortable,

heated passenger seat, as we saw the beautiful trees fill with fluffy white snow.

Election showdown looms in Campton Hills Village president to run as write-in candidate

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills Village President Patsy Smith on Thursday filed as a writein candidate in the April 7 consolidated election. She is seeking a third term.

Smith and a slate of three trustee write-ins – Stephany Impson, Mike Turgeon and Don Sheluga – filed on the last day to d e c l a r e t h e Patsy Smith intent to be a write-in candidate.

Smith has been clashing for months with Trustees Harry Becker, Susan Andersen and Susan George over various issues.

Smith has tried to replace Police Chief Daniel Hoffman, get Trustee Al Lenkaitis removed from the board – asserting he has moved – and redefine the duties of Village Administrator Jen-

nifer Johnsen.

The board majority either has blocked or undone her efforts.

Blecker is running for village president, and Andersen and George are running for trustee, as is newcomer Michael O’Dwyer.

“I’ve worked too hard,” said Smith, who worked for the village’s incorporation in 2007 and served as its village president since. “If I walk away, I want to leave it in good hands.”

Smith said if she wins the village’s top spot without her slate, she will re-evaluate the situation, hinting she might walk away because of the seemingly relentless disagreements on the board that began in June.

Blecker, Andersen, George and O’Dwyer are on the Feb. 24 primary election ballot.

If they win their primaries, their names will advance to the April 7 ballot.

Also on the primary ballot are two write-ins,

Steve Galloway for trustee, a Smith ally, and Nicholas Girka, a Blecker ally, who is running for clerk.

Galloway needs to get 10 percent of the votes cast for trustee to get his name on the April 7 ballot, said Suzanne Fahnestock, chief deputy clerk of elections for the Kane County Clerk’s Office. The law does not say the write-in needs 10 percent of the highest vote getter, only 10 percent of the votes of one trustee candidate on the ballot, Fahnestock said.

Blecker said write-in candidates always have an uphill battle.

“Let’s leave it up to the people,” Blecker said. “They want four more years of Patsy with all the bickering and controversy – that is their choice. Or do they want to elect somebody who will settle the village down and get down to work and move on in a positive fashion? It’s up to the voters. They have a clear choice of two different objectives.”

Smith said voters will

decide.

“I think people should have a choice, and that is what we are giving them – leadership that is well-qualified and willing to work hard,” Smith said. “Voters are going to have to be proactive and write in five names.”

Early voting in the Campton Hills primary runs Monday through Feb. 21 at the Kane County Clerk’s Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building B, Geneva.

Early voting also is available at the Campton Township Community Center, 5N082 Old LaFox Road, Campton Hills.

Voters also can cast ballots on primary day, Feb. 24. On that day, they should vote at their usual polling place, Fahnestock said.

Information about the hours for early voting is on the Kane County Clerk’s website, www.kanecountyelections.org.

Others in the area who filed as write-in candidates included Perry Clark of Sugar Grove for Sugar Grove Park District and Christopher Vaughn for Lily Lake trustee.

LOCAL BRIEF Batavia Green Night Out set for Saturday BATAVIA – The seventh annual Batavia Green Night Out at the Movies is set for 6:15 p.m.

Saturday at Batavia City Hall, 100 N. Island Ave. The movie begins at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The Batavia Environmental Commission, with the support of the Batavia Park District, will provide a green-themed movie, free popcorn and a drink (for those who bring a reusable cup and bowl), an expo featuring local groups and businesses and a discussion about the topic of the movie afterward. The movie will be, “The Nature of Cities.”

The film focuses on innovative ways in which nature can be designed into urban environments.

Michelle Hickey of the Resiliency Institute is the guest speaker and will present after the movie.

P-ARTS Variety Show set for March 6 in St. Charles KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A longtime arts group will have St. Charles East High School students take the stage next month for a good cause.

The 12th annual P-ARTS Variety Show will begin at 7 p.m. March 6 at the Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles, according to a news release.

Tickets to the event will be $7 for adults, $5 for students and will be available at the door starting at 6:30 p.m.

March 6. The show is the primary fundraiser for P-ARTS, which stands for People for the Arts, the high school’s arts advocacy and booster club.

Proceeds from the variety show are used for student scholarships and to benefit arts programs at the high school.

One of the group’s recent scholarship recipients was Jessica Blakely, a St. Charles East senior, the release states.

Blakely received a $250 award to go toward her participation from Jan. 8 to 10 in the Illinois All State Theatre Festival show “Pippin” at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, according to the release.

St. Charles East drama teacher Teresa Bundy recommended the P-ARTS scholarship to Blakely, who through an audition joined an elite group of high school performers from around the state for

Hultgren opposing proposed expansion of Clean Water Act Co-sponsoring legislation to block expansion

Hultgren is co-sponsoring the Waters of the United States Regulatory Overreach Protection Act, designed to prevent the Environmental

Protection Agency and other federal agencies from using the Clean Water Act to expand jurisdiction over land that currently is under the control of states and farmers, construction businesses and other private owners.

“It has been clear from the release of the proposed rules that the administration – using Randy Hultgren the arm of the dangerously powerful EPA – has moved to increasingly expand its power at the expense of farmers

and other land-owners in Illinois and nationwide,” Hultgren stated in a news release.

“Not content to regulate large bodies of water like lakes and rivers, the EPA seeks to micromanage ditches, wetlands, streams, flood plains and even ornamental landscape features. Further, there’s no sound science to back up the rule. We should be supporting and promoting the work of our farmers and businesses, not extending the federal government’s heavy hand over their land.”

The federal Clean Water Act originally was approved in 1972. In September 2013, the EPA first announced

the proposed rule, which would restore Clean Water Act protections to waterways throughout Illinois and across the country.

The rule would make clear that the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers have the authority and responsibility to protect smaller bodies of water from harmful pollution.

Local environmental groups have come out in support of the proposed rule, saying it ultimately will lead to a cleaner Fox River.

“It will clear up misunderstandings about what the Clean Water Act is designed to protect,” Cindy Skrukrud,

chairman of the board of directors for the Fox River Study Group, previously has said. “It is very important that we protect headwater streams and wetlands that are kind of the capillaries to our arteries and veins of water like the Fox River. You need to protect those capillaries if you are going to have clean water downstream.”

The Fox River Study Group is a coalition of different groups, such as the Friends of the Fox River, Sierra Club and Fox River Ecosystem Partnership, working together to assess water quality in the Fox River watershed.

A private-public partnership, the Fit for Kids Funders’ Consortium was established to support the coordinated, community-based initiatives needed to make Kane County “fit for kids” and implement

the Fit Kids 2020 Plan, states a news release from the consortium.

Fit for Kids is a Kane County initiative to reverse childhood obesity by 2020.

The Rush-Copley Foundation joins the following consortium members: the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, United Way of Elgin, the Kane County Health Department and the Kane County Division of Transportation.

The consortium has made

more than $520,000 available to community partners to support local efforts to reduce obesity in the community and implement the Fit Kids 2020 Plan, states the release. The funds have been – and will continue to be – made available to community organizations, municipalities and coalitions that implement strategies consistent with the goals of Fit for Kids, the release states.

Center completed a comprehensive “Community Health Needs Assessment” in 2013 to prioritize and address the top health issues of the community that it serves. That area includes Aurora, Oswego, Montgomery, north Plainfield and most of Kendall County.

The top three health priorities identified were obesity; chronic disease prevention and management, with a focus on diabetes; and access to care, with a focus on medications for the uninsured and underinsured, the release states.

Fire science teacher accused in sexual assault of student ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A former instructor with the Fox Valley Career Center has been dismissed after he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a minor, according to a news release from Kaneland School District 302.

Glen C. Baum, 42, of the 500 block of Heritage Drive, Osw e g o , w a s Glen C. Baum charged with nine counts of criminal sexual assault, each a Class 1 felony, and two counts of child pornography, each a Class 3 felony, according to a news release issued by the Kane County

State’s Attorney’s Office.

In the District 302 release, interim Kaneland Superintendent Renee Goier indicated that district officials were notified on Jan. 12 that “inappropriate electronic communication may have taken place between a student and Glen Baum,” who was described as a contracted service provider at the Fox Valley Career Center. The release indicated Baum “was immediately removed from campus and allowed no further contact with students.”

The district’s release stated Baum’s contract was terminated on Jan. 14.

Prosecutors allege Baum maintained a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old between May 2014 and January 2015, according to the state’s attorney’s office release.

At that time, the release

states, Baum instructed high school students in fire science.

The teen reportedly was one of his students.

Authorities reportedly became aware of the relationship by the teen’s mother, who saw messages from Baum on her child’s cellphone.

The news release from Kaneland indicated that “at this time, the district does not believe that any additional current or former students were involved.”

“Kaneland School District 302 officials have cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office throughout the criminal proceedings,” Goier stated in the release. “The district prioritizes the safety and emotional well-being of all students enrolled in all programs housed within the dis-

trict.”

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized charges against Baum on Tuesday. A warrant for his arrest then was issued, and his bond was set at $250,000.

Oswego police and Kane County sheriff’s deputies took Baum into custody Wednesday, according to the release.

In the event Baum posts bail, he is to have no contact with the teen, no contact with anyone younger than 18 and no Internet access, according to the release. He is next expected in court at 9 a.m. Feb. 11.

New franchise owner takes reins at Batavia GNC store

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The new franchise owner of the GNC store in the Shoppes at Windmill Place commerce center, 145 S. Randall Road, Batavia, promises to provide better customer service.

Robert Wiet became the store’s franchise owner in August. Before that, the store was a corporate store within the GNC chain for six years, Wiet said.

“We can provide even

better customer service,” Wiet said. “We have product knowledge and will steer you in the right direction.”

GNC sells health- and sports-related vitamins, supplements and herbs, along with drinks and snacks. Before becoming the franchise owner of the Batavia store, Wiet was general manager at several other GNC stores in the area.

“I’m big into fitness, and I love supplementation,” Wiet said. “I believe in the products that I have been selling

for many years.”

This weekend, the Batavia store will host a super sale event from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

She was united in marriage to Tim Downey August 2, 1987 in Harwood Heights, IL. Liz was an active mother who volunteered her time and talents in the Batavia Schools while her children attended. She continued her volunteer and charitable spirit with service to Holy Cross Catholic Church and her contributions to helping the poor.

Liz is survived by her husband, Tim; three children, Alexie, Matt and Danielle Downey; her mother, Mary DiBerardino; three sisters, Patty Scholle, Anna (Joe) Cerrito and Suzanne (Jeff) Kline; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, Mario.

Follman McDonald whom he married on August 18, 1951. Their children, David (Nancy) McDonald and Denise (David) Dorman. Glenn is also survived by his grandsons, Preston McDonald and Jack Dorman.

Officials probe measles cases at Palatine day care

By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com Officials are investigating a cluster of measles in a KinderCare Learning Center in Palatine, including five children younger than 1, according to a joint statement from the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Cook County Department of Health. The day care center is at 929 E. Palatine Road.

Lab testing has confirmed a measles diagnosis for two of the children, and test results for the remaining three are still pending. However, those three already have been diagnosed based on clinical and epidemiological criteria, the statement said.

Under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, children should not get the first measles-mumps-rubella vaccine until they are 12 to 15 months old.

Those younger than 1 year – such as the children involved in this investigation – are meant to be protected by herd immunity, which is when enough people in a community are immunized to make the spread of infectious disease unlikely.

The source of infection is not known at this time, but health officials have taken precautions to limit the spread.

Students, staff and faculty have been notified, and anyone who has not received the MMR vaccine has been instructed to stay at home and away from unvaccinated people for the next 21 days.

Officials also have advised any unvaccinated residents experiencing symptoms of high fever and a rash to call their local health department and health care providers. Those people should contact their doctor before seeking care so staff are able to take precautions to prevent others from being infected.

Symptoms of the highly contagious airborne virus include fever, red and sore eyes, runny nose, cough and a characteristic rash. It also can cause severe

complications, such as pneumonia, encephalitis – a type of swelling of the brain – and death.

The most recent cases underscore the importance of getting vaccinated, the statement said.

At this time, it’s not clear whether the cases are linked to the previously confirmed case in suburban Cook County or the outbreak centered around a California amusement park.

The Palatine cases will add to the national outbreak, which as of Jan. 30, included 102 cases in 14 states in 2015, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Historic Peck House shows off its new look KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – The Geneva Park District recently completed work to restore the front porch of the historic Peck House to its original design and to redevelop the front and back rooms on the first floor for museum exhibits and welcome area, according to a news release.

The district received a $98,000 Public Museum Grant awarded by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the work, according to the park district’s online budget records.

The 1830s farm house’s front porch historic renovation was completed in September and is open to the public at Peck Farm Park, 4038 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

The restoration work of the porch returns the house to its

full grandeur and provides more program space for field trips, Scout groups and summer camps, officials said in a statement.

The interior of the house now includes a history gallery, welcome center and gift shop.

The history gallery focuses on the Peck family and their legacy to Geneva and the surrounding area. Highlights include a replica of the silo, which stands in the center of the room as a main focal point, an interactive family biography wall that includes four generations of the Pecks and a short documentary that outlines the story of the Peck family travels from Vermont to Illinois and became one of the premier sheep ranchers in the country.

The welcome center allows staff to greet visitors as they enter the house. Information

in the room allows visitors the opportunity to learn what Peck Farm Park has to offer and provides a variety of souvenirs.

In a statement, Peck Farm Park Manager Trish Burns said the park is “the jewel of the Geneva Park District” and provides a unique look at the history of sheep ranching in Illinois.

The park also provides open space and recreation opportunities to visitors, including set a footpath and bike trails, the observation silo, the butterfly house and Hawks Hollow Nature Playground.

Burns said Peck Farm Park is an “all-day family destination” providing a variety of environmental educational programs year-round.

Diminishing returns of today’s homeownership policies

By CHARLES LANE The Washington Post It’s official: Over the past couple of decades, the United States spent vast amounts of time, energy and, above all, money – both private and public – to raise the national rate of homeownership, with exactly nothing to show for it.

The Wall Street Journal reported 63.9 percent of U.S. households owned their residences in the fourth quarter of 2014, precisely the same percentage as in the third quarter of 1994. In fact, the current homeownership rate is a mere 1 percentage point higher than it was 50 years ago, census data show.

The 1994 date is significant because, as the Journal pointed out, it was just a few months before President Bill

Clinton, a Democrat, announced a “national homeownership strategy” in June 1995, with an explicit goal of 67.5 percent homeownership by 2000. The next president, Republican George W. Bush, declared his vision of an “ownership society” with a target of 5.5 million new minority homeowners by 2010.

With successive administrations from both parties pushing federal agencies so hard in the same direction, it’s not surprising the homeownership rate did, indeed, hit an all-time high of 69.1 percent in early 2005.

Given the financial corners were cut to pump up the rate, it’s also no surprise that the figure has retraced its statistical steps since the housing market began to tank in 2007.

Whether you blame Wall

Street, Washington or some combination of the two, the simple fact is that government and business sold millions of people an American Dream that could not survive a sour economy, with nightmarish results for them and for the country.

The big lesson here is equally straightforward: Central planning does not work. There is no “right” level of homeownership, and it’s folly to pursue one, much less to pretend that boosting homeownership represents a risk-free way for government to achieve various social goals without directly paying for them.

Even now, after the housing market has largely healed, a tenth of America’s 50 million mortgaged residential properties have negative equity, according to the

latest survey by CoreLogic, a leading real estate information firm. Another 19 percent lack the recommended 20 percent equity cushion.

For all its professed free-market principles, the United States is unique in the industrialized world in the degree to which its national ethos stigmatizes renting and its national government subsidizes mortgages, through the tax deduction for mortgage interest and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guarantees for securities backed by 30-year mortgages.

That system is due for an overhaul, but Congress remains deadlocked as lobbyists from all the interest groups that benefitted from the old system – mortgage bankers, builders, real estate agents, low-income housing advocates – seek to preserve,

or resurrect, the parts that advantage them.

Genuine reform would abandon any vestige of the old central-planning mentality and apply the lessons of the past two decades, as well as experience in countries, such as Australia and Canada, which have homeownership rates comparable to, or better than, the United States. Both put much greater emphasis on market mechanisms, especially shorter-term mortgage products that require large down payments and share the risk of interest-rate volatility between borrowers and lenders.

Under those conditions, people are more likely to have a truly sustainable stake in their property, and homeownership is more than just a political catchphrase.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Much as in the teams’ first meeting in St. Charles – a 77-69 East win – turnovers dogged Geneva, especially in the fourth quarter as East guard Evan DiLeonardi led a spirited rally, providing the large crowd an unexpected treat of a competitive finish.

“We allowed ourselves to be hunted rather than being the hunter,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said of his team’s late woes.

Geneva senior forward Nate Navigato scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds while Pace Temple – who missed the first meeting with an injury – was one of three Vikings to score 11, Fuzak and Loudon Vollbrecht being the others.

The Vikings, leading 15-6 after the first quarter, gained decisive separation during the second quarter. The 6-foot-7 Fuzak canned a trio of 3-pointers during the quarter’s first 3 minutes and the Viking feeding frenzy continued, yielding a

“I was just doing what I could to help,” Fuzak said. “I saw they were trapping off Nate and Pace so when I would go set a screen I’d try to get out in open space, and they left me open so I thought I’d put some 3s away.”

Meanwhile, the usually dead-eye Saints went 1 for 14 from beyond the arc in the half and were 2 for 20 from 3-point land until erupting for seven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, three of those from Gentry (21 points). DiLeonardi scored 13 of his 17 points in the final quarter.

Until the late stages, Ralston was thrilled with his squad’s defense against the high-scoring Saints.

“I thought we came out with a good gameplan to really try to close off driving lanes and really stress to our guys that we had to stay down on their shooters and we needed gang rebounding at the defensive end, and I thought our kids did a really nice job of that,” Ralston said.

St. Charles co-op advances to sectionals

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Thursday’s runner-up finish at the York Regional still yielded an atlarge sectional berth for the St. Charles co-op girls gymnastics team.

Talk about an appropriate adjective, at-large. Advancing to Tuesday’s Glenbard North Sectional ensures the co-op’s jelling camaraderie remains active, too.

St. Charles scored a 141.825 in York’s cozy upstairs gym, trailing only the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op, which won the four-team event with a 145.175.

As they embraced each other and mugged for pictures, St. Charles athletes gave thanks for the past few months of workout reps.

“Not only knowing that we had the practice to get through all of our routines well and everything, but knowing that we could be confident and not worry about everything else going on in the meet,” freshman Grace Levita said. “Just sticking to what we can do and what we know how to do.”

St. Charles sought to channel one more dose of the good vibes it has created in the same York gym over the years.

Last February, the co-op won regionals here with a 147.00, a tick better than the 144.65 it achieved at the Upstate Eight Conference meet a few days earlier.

In 2013, St. Charles scored a 145.2 to top a five-team York Regional field.

Competing Thursday in the fourth and final regional of the

sectional complex, St. Charles entered with the advantage of knowing the exact number it needed to beat if it didn’t Emma Grace win the regional Redmondoutright. The two Mattucci best non-winning team scores qualify for sectionals as at-large entries.

Glenbard West (139.55), just 0.45 points shy of tying for a regional Amy title, provided the Lill benchmark for runners-up, but the gap between the Hilltoppers and Batavia (134.025) struck St. Charles as inviting.

“I felt that we were very confident,” said St. Charles

freshman Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci, whose 36.7 allaround score ranked third. “We did have some goof-ups, but we really tried to pick them up on each event, and we really just had fun.”

Coach Amy Lill lamented St. Charles’ struggles on the bars and balance beam after last week’s UEC meet, joking that the inconsistency might threaten to tinge her blonde hair with streaks of premature gray.

A week later, she flashed smiles as St. Charles routinely stuck its maneuvers en route to steady scores. The co-op’s aggregate beam score, 36.1, was its highest among the four disciplines and trailed only DeKalb-Sycamore (36.125) for tops in the field.

“The whole year, we haven’t really been comparing ourselves

to other people,” Lill said. “Just trying to set goals for our team and see if we can achieve those.”

St. Charles gymnasts finished second, third and fifth in the beam behind Redmond-Mattucci (9.3), Jillian Horlbeck (9.225) and Levita (9.075).

Other highlights included senior Raquel Favia’s fourthplace effort in the vault (9.1), and Danielle Buoy’s fifth-place floor exercise (8.925).

St. Charles enters sectionals with the third-best team score among the six-team field, trailing only DeKalb-Sycamore and Geneva, which won its own regional Wednesday with a 146.425.

“Obviously, we know what we need to fix,” Lill said. “We have two practices to do that, so hopefully they can rise to the occasion.”

The North Stars outscored the Maroons, 22-12, in the second behind senior stat stuffers Jake Ludwig and Jack Callaghan. The duo scored 22 and 21 points respectively to pace North.

Ludwig was on pace for a triple-double at halftime and finished with eight rebounds and seven assists Thursday.

Many of those seven assists found Callaghan open under the basket. He finished 8 of 13 from the floor to go along with six rebounds and two assists. Both combined for a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line.

“They are consistent performers,” North coach Tom Poulin said of his two seniors. “We got what we expected out of Jake and Jack.”

For Elgin, senior guard Desmond Douglas kept the Maroons within striking distance. Douglas scored 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting.

“He’s a difference maker,”

said Poulin of the 5-foot-7 Douglas who was not available in the first match-up between the two teams.

“He’s a pretty good player,” Ludwig said of his opponent. “He brings a different element to their team.”

Courtese Cooper also had a nice game for Elgin picking up six rebounds in the second half including three on the offensive end. Cooper finished with six points and nine rebounds on the night.

For the North Stars, a playoff run may rely on the development of a third option on offense. They may have found it in sophomore center Griffin Hammer. Hammer finished with six points and five rebounds despite sitting most of the second half with foul trouble. Hammer was active from both the high and low post positions.

“As he continues to develop, the team continues to improve. He’s someone who was important to us in the beginning of the season and he is still important for us,” said Poulin of his young center.

North will look to keep its conference championship hopes alive next Friday on the road against Larkin.

COMING ATTRACTION Regionals for all three IHSA classes begin Saturday, officially starting the climb to the grand march at the state tournament in Champaign.

First-, second- and third-place winners in each of the 14 weight classes advance to sectionals next week.

Batavia will host Marmion and seven other schools in a Class 3A regional, while St. Charles East, St. Charles North and Geneva are part of the field at the West Chicago Regional.

In 2A, Kaneland and Burlington Central travel to the Belvidere Regional, with St. Francis competing at Fenton.

Aurora Central Catholic and Wheaton Academy are part of the 1A Rockford Lutheran Regional.

The team with the most points at each individual regional will qualify for dual team sectionals, which follow the individual state tournament. Marmion, dogged by injuries for much of the season, finished third in the 3A bracket in 2013-14.

“This is it,” Cadets co-coach Ryan Cumbee said. “We’re a team that’s hobbled by injury, but we’re going to keep staying together and keep going.

That’s all we can do, you know.”

Batavia rolled throughout a memorable home duals season, romping past Geneva in the adjacent Batavia Fine Arts Centre and rallying to defeat Kaneland in the night’s final bout as a live DJ looked – and played – on.

The Bulldogs realize the bells and whistles won’t be as prevalent when they host a Class 3A regional Saturday.

Still, advancing past this round means they’re merely one step away from the ultimate stage: The state tournament at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign.

It’s not as if Batavia needed a jolt after going unbeaten in Upstate Eight Conference River Division duals to win the division title. Considering St. Charles East’s resiliency in taking the UEC tournament crown, however, the Bulldogs certainly responded when Kaneland visited Jan. 30.

In the final match of the night, Batavia junior 220-pounder Dylan Uzumecki pinned Kaneland’s Tom Price late in the first period, earning six team points to cement a 31-26 Bulldogs’ win.

Uzumecki won Batavia’s lone UEC tournament title, with senior heavyweight Mitch Krusz taking second.

“I think we had a decent showing,” Bulldogs senior 195-pounder Noah Frazier said. “We had a couple guys get hurt and a couple guys not wrestle the way we wanted to. But this is a big, tough conference tournament and it challenged us. … So yeah, we’re feeling good and ready to go for that final push

Knights ‘pretty confident’ Price shifted up one weight class, but Knights coach Joe Orosco told him he shouldn’t be leery to use the move that ultimately opened a door for Uzumecki, the lateral drop.

“Tom’s won a lot with that throw, and he’s lost a lot with that throw,” Orosco said. “We just said go out there and do what you do and see what happens.”

Kaneland entered the dual as Illinois Matmen’s sixth-ranked team in Class 2A, and welcomed the challenge from a bigger school with the postseason looming.

Orosco, in his first season leading the program, has seen budding balance among the Knights’ strong mix of underclassmen and veterans.

“Looking at the [regional] tournament [at Belvidere], we’re pretty confident in most of the guys, most of the weight classes getting out and getting into sectionals,” Orosco said. “We’ve got a lot of guys who have wrestled tough and are finishing the season on a good note.”

That puts an extra premium on mental preparation for the final workouts before the state series.

“Try to clear some things up and clean some things up,” Orosco said. “More and more of it is mindset. Working them hard and then easing up near the end of the week to get that mindset dialed in.”

Cumbee, Reynolds steer Cadets Ryan Cumbee and Donny Reynolds tweaked their titles entering the season

to become Marmion co-head coaches.

By any other name, they’re still extremely active in the Cadets’ mat room as rotating practice partners.

“Donny and I can take care of the whole lineup, and that’s the fun part,” Cumbee said. “Then as you get up higher, it’s fine. Donny and I train like little guys. I wrestled 135 in high school, but to be able to go with these guys at [170] and [182] and [195] and 220, it’s fun.

We like to do that for the kids, because we show them that we’re willing to do whatever we’re asking them to do. So it’s cool.”

A one-time assistant at his alma mater, Providence, Cumbee took the Cadets’ reins in 2012-13, bringing his fellow former Celtic, Reynolds, on as an assistant.

Cumbee is three years older than Reynolds and drove him to high school during Cumbee’s senior year.

When Cumbee’s wife recently had a child, Cumbee consulted his friend about shifting things around.

“I want Donny to start getting some of that recognition, too,” Cumbee said.

“I mean, I grew up with Donny. So I’m happy for him, and he’s well-deserving.”

The switch hasn’t impacted workouts or any other element of the team, according to junior Riley DeMoss, a 170-pounder from St. Charles.

“I think it’s just really the title,” DeMoss said. “They’ve both been the same role all three years. Not really much has changed with that.”

Who should Bears get to join Cutler at quarterback?

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush We still have absolutely no idea what Bears general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox think of Jay Cutler.

We assume Fox has determined his name isn’t Jake?

With the recent contract extensions for Al Louis-Jean and DeDe Lattimore, it appears Pace has completed the binge-watching he promised of the Bears’ entire 2014 season, but we have yet to hear a peep about Cutler.

Let’s assume for the moment, because of economics and market conditions, it’s likely Cutler will go to training camp in Bourbonnais in July as the Bears’ starting quarterback for at least one more year.

Unlike the long line of coaches Cutler allegedly has “killed,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains are going to survive past 2015 regardless of what happens with Cutler.

With everything else Pace and Fox have to worry about, why not give Gase and Loggains one crack at the NFL quarterbacks version of Rubik’s Cube?

The question we should all be focused on right now isn’t what do the Bears do about Cutler, it’s what should they do at the position in addition to Cutler?

I was asked Thursday which current NFL veteran the Bears should pluck in free agency to challenge Cutler.

The answer is none. The last thing the Bears need or want is Cutler on the bench as a $17 million backup. That scenario could create locker room, huddle and sideline issues even Henry Kissinger wouldn’t want to tackle.

The reason the Bears need to address quarterback in free agency is their own 2014 backup, Jimmy Clausen, is a member of this year’s class, and it’s unlikely the only other QB on the roster, David Fales, is an answer.

It is instructive to consider the NFL coach who drafted Clausen out of Notre Dame with the 48th pick in 2010 was

Bears hire Drayton as running backs coach John Fox secured one of the final members of his 2015 staff, hiring Stan Drayton as running backs coach, the Bears announced Thursday.

Drayton has 22 years of coaching experience under his belt, including the past four seasons serving as assistant head coach/running backs at Ohio State, where he won a national championship after the 2014 campaign.

Drayton made previous stops as running backs coach at University of Florida (2010), Syracuse (2009),

Tennessee (2008), Mississippi State (2004), Bowling Green (2000), Villanova (1996 to ’99), Pennsylvania (1995) and his alma mater, Allegheny (Pa.) College, in 1993.

He was a graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan (1994) and offensive quality control/special teams coach with the Packers from 2001 to 2003.

With Drayton officially on board, the Bears notified Skip Peete that he won’t be returning in 2015.

John Fox. It is also worth noting that after playing 13 games as a rookie and compiling a 58.4 passer rating, the Panthers were 2-14 and Fox’s contract was not renewed, allowing/ forcing him to leave for Denver.

After five years of trying, there is no indication Clausen is an NFL-winning quarterback, and the Bears can do better.

The truth is we know little about Fales, but the fact the Bears were afraid to put him on the field Week 17 against the Vikings after spending almost an entire season with the Bears last year speaks volumes.

The Bears don’t need to give up on Fales yet, but count-

ing on him as a No. 2 has Caleb Hanie written all over it.

There are only two free agent QBs that make sense for the Bears: Jake Locker and Matt Moore.

Locker was the eighth player chosen in the 2011 draft, will turn just 27 in June and he showed occasional flashes working with Loggains in Tennessee on the rare occasions he was healthy.

Minimally, he works as a No. 2, and if he could stay healthy he might even be able to become a No. 1 if this proves to be Cutler’s last season as a Bear.

Like Clausen, Moore’s first NFL coach was Fox after he went undrafted in 2007, was cut in training camp by the Cowboys and claimed on waiv-

ers by the Panthers.

Moore has played well in stints as a starter with the Dolphins but was never able to convince Miami he could be the starter.

He is one of the best No. 2s in the NFL. If the Bears were to sign Moore in free agency, they would want to draft a quarterback as well, but they have way too much to try to get done to risk the No. 7 pick on Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota.

Should UCLA’s Brett Hundley make it to the third round – which he probably won’t – he’d be a steal.

Who’s your hero?

Ernie Banks. He was still my hero. Ever since my high school days, this great and gentle sports figure and good citizen stayed close in my heart where heroes dwell.

This business of heroes seems to have changed through the years.

I believe that we are now living in the days of manufactured heroes.

So many young people – and others, too – seek to connect with “heroes” who are part of the popular culture stream; individuals of no particular depth and those who represent an attractive point of view are offered up by publicity professionals and delivered often and everywhere.

As with any process of persuasion, the most vulnerable are those with limited perspectives and high participation in a particular element of the culture. I’ll leave it to readers to suggest typical “heroes” out there today.

Back in ’53 when Mr. Cub first made the scene, I was already a diehard Cubs fan. That puts us, me and my Cubby buddy Carol Heinz in the aforementioned categories, but pushing back the idea of narrow perspectives. After all, we were in HIGH SCHOOL. Of note, it seems to me, was the impact of mass media in those days. Blends of fictional stories featuring cowboys, twittering families and live sports were available in small doses. Hollywood provided admirable screen images such as Clark Gabel, John Wayne and The Roadrunner. Pick a hero.

Frankly, not much of the “real

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry world” made it to the level of consciousness. A case in point: In the old Thompson building which was our high school, a classroom across from my locker, where we had our American history class, was dedicated to the late teacher, Lois McCornack.

A mural had been commissioned that circled the room. It was a plantation motif, starting with the mansion at the front of the room and individuals (slaves) picking cotton on the back wall.

Presumably we all thought of it as “history” as it occurred and was to be remembered. No questions, no protest.

My hero was history, too, but my admiration seemed to come out of his achievements – the predictable home run, his reputation as an incredibly nice man. Validated to this day for these traits.

Along the way I have picked up some other heroes: J.J. Watt and Tom Selleck to name a few. But for me, there will never be another Ernie Banks.

Dear Abby: I am a widower in my mid-80s and have met a lovely widow, “Diane,” also in her 80s.

Risk to artificial joint from dental work is very low Dear Doctor K: I had knee replacement surgery several years ago. More recently, I had my hip replaced. I am scheduled to have a root canal next month. Do I need to take antibiotics before my dental procedure?

Dear Reader: Almost any type of dental work – extractions, gum surgery, root canals, even routine cleanings – can injure the gums and other soft tissues of the mouth. The most obvious evidence of this is that they bleed.

Bacteria live inside our mouth.

When gums are injured, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream. From there, bacteria can travel to places throughout the body – including the new joints that are created by hip or knee implants. A bacterial infection of a new artificial joint can ruin the joint. That will make a second operation necessary. Your implant can become infected even years after surgery.

Because of this theoretical risk from dental work, during most of my medical career the authorities recommended that people who have had hip or knee replacements take antibiotics before an invasive dental procedure.

That is, the experts thought the benefits of taking “prophylactic” (preventive) antibiotics were

In more recent years, however, large studies have changed expert opinion. The studies have shown that the risk to an artificial joint from dental work conducted without antibiotics is very low.

More important, the overuse of antibiotics has been shown to create bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics – a growing risk.

For these reasons, professional dental and orthopedic groups now say preventive antibiotics aren’t required for people with artificial joints. But they still recommend that you let your dentist know about your artificial joint: There may be some dental procedures that the dentist or oral surgeon thinks may cause an unusually large number of bacteria to get into your bloodstream.

To be clear, I’m not saying that no one needs preventive antibiotics before and during a dental procedure. People with certain heart conditions, for example, should get preventive antibiotics before and during most dental procedures. This does not include

routine dental cleaning.

People with these heart conditions are at greater risk for a disease called endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the heart’s valves or inner lining. It can cause lasting damage to the heart.

To reduce the risk of endocarditis, you will likely need to take a preventive antibiotic if you: • Have an artificial heart valve; • Have had infective endocarditis in the past; • Have a transplanted heart with valve problems; • Were born with certain heart problems that were not repaired, were repaired recently or were repaired but continue to cause problems.

You may also need to take preventive antibiotics before dental procedures if you have cancer, HIV infection or hemophilia. Also tell your dentist and other doctors if you have a condition that puts you at greater risk of infection.

Finally, you may have taken antibiotics before having dental work in the past. Ask your doctor or dentist if that is still necessary.

Dr. Leonard Ashley, former president of the American Name Society, an organization concerned with all aspects of names, claimed that an individual’s name should, just like that of a product, project the appropriate image.

“It’s truth in advertising,” Ashley explained.

“The label on the bottle says something about

“It’s clear,” Trevor conjectured, perhaps with tongue in cheek, “that the strain of all this waiting for our names to be called – or always being last – renders us much more likely to become morose and introspective.”

Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn was born Edna Rae Gillooly and went through five more names before sticking with her current one. Others who changed their names include Kirk Douglas, who was born Issur Danielovitch Demsky; Walter Matthau, whose real name was Matuschan Skavasky; Woody Allen, who grew up Allen Stewart Konigsberg; and Cary Grant, whose name was the less glamorous Archibald Leach.

While movie stars may be the most famous name changers, teenagers actually do it most. “It’s part of an adolescent’s search for a particular identity,” Ashley explained.

That applies to a lot of inexperienced bridge players. They learn “rules” like cover an honor with an honor or third hand high and always follow them, even when it is wrong. Yes, all right, that is what sorts out the good players from the less capable, but usually, especially in the card play, you have only two choices: Play high or low, or discard or ruff. Take a few moments to consider both, and you are likely to realize which is correct.

In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads his diamond two. South takes East’s seven with his ace and leads the spade queen.

East wins with his ace and returns the diamond jack. How should South continue?

South’s three-spade rebid was game-invitational.

Declarer seems to have 10 easy tricks: five spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. So, when East returns the diamond jack, it looks obvious for South to win the trick with his king. Here, though, West ruffs away the king, and declarer later loses two diamond tricks to go down one.

Instead, South should let East take the trick. Then declarer’s 10 tricks are safe, South being sure of a second diamond trick even if East leads a third diamond.

Finally, note that if West could overtake his partner’s diamond jack from an initial holding of queen-third and give his partner a ruff, the defenders would take only those three tricks.

Police Records Specialist III The Village of Elburn, Illinois (population 5,602) is accepting applications for the position of Police Records Specialist III. This is a part-time position consisting of 16 hours per week, and reports directly to the Chief of Police. This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of functions that support the records management and administrative obligations of the police department.

The duties of a Police Records Specialist III may include, data entry, receiving telephone calls and citizen visits concerning information requests and complaints, accepting payments of fines and fees, communicating with other law enforcement agencies, preparing court related documents, and other tasks as assigned.

Desired qualifications include, but are not limited to graduation from high school or equivalent with two (2) years of law enforcement records experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish successful working relationships; ability to work under pressure and/or with frequent interruptions; ability to work with angry or difficult customers. Experience with New World Systems Records Management program, Municipal Software, Inc. (MSI), and GovPayNet are a plus.

Salary is dependent on qualifications.
