Group to host debate ELGIN – The Kane County Young Republicans will have a debate featuring candidates in the 65th State Representative race – Steve Andersson, Debbie Miller and Dan Ugaste.

The candidates will be running for the seat currently held by State Rep. Tim Schmitz, who is not seeking re-election.

Taxes, Settler’s Hill Geneva wins snowfighting award key issues in D-11 County Board race KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Taxes and the redevelopment of the former Settler’s Hill landfill for recreational use are two of the issues in the race for Kane County Board District 11.

Lawyer and community volunteer John Martin, a Geneva resident, is running against longtime Geneva resident and businessman Tom Matson for the Republican nomination in the March 18 general primary. There are no Democratic candidates running for the seat in the primary.

Incumbent Michael Donahue is not running for re-election. District 11 includes portions of Geneva and Batavia.

Matson said one of the reasons he is running is to keep taxes in check.

“People are just tired of their taxes going up,” Matson said. “I favor Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen’s countywide tax freeze. I’m a huge proponent of that in today’s economy. The economy is still uncertain.”

Matson, 52, said he has lived in Geneva for most of his life and has been in the communications industry for 27 years. His family runs Matson Jewelry in Geneva.

“I was born and raised in Geneva, and a good portion of the district is in Geneva,” Matson said. “I know my district very well.”

Matson also said his business experience serves him well.

“I have the ability to work with people and to resolve conflicts,” he said.

Martin, 66, has been a Geneva resident for 41 years.

He is a founding partner of the Huck Bouma law firm in Wheaton.

He has been chairman of the Geneva Academic Foundation and the Geneva Plan Commission.

“I feel like I know the town,” Martin said.

Martin said Tom Matson h e w a n t s t o control government spending, reduce taxes and maintain the quality of life in Kane County. One of the issues that John Martin he would focus on as a Kane County board member would be the redevelopment of Settler’s Hill.

“I’d like to see something other than just a mound of grass-covered garbage,” Martin said. “The property can be a benefit to the county and adjoining communities.”

In the past, there have been environmental concerns raised about the redevelopment of the property.

“Each stage needs to be reviewed carefully,” Martin said.

GENEVA – Geneva announced in a news release Wednesday that its environmental consciousness and effective management in the storage of winter road salt has earned the city a 2013 Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting Award.

Geneva earned high marks on the Salt Institute’s checklist that graded safety and service, equipment, materials usage, snow plowing performance, tactical operations before and during a storm, storage and safety and environmental measures, according to the release.

“The familiar sight of trucks spreading salt on icy winter roads gives motorists reassurance, as it should,” Salt Institute President Lori Roman said in the release.

“If that salt was stored in and spread by an agency honored with a Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting Award, motorists have the added assurance of knowing the utmost care has been taken to protect public safety and the environment.”

Geneva’s award comes during a winter that has dropped more than 44 inches of snow. Plow operators have used more than 3,000 tons of salt to keep the city’s 244 lane miles safe.

Signs indicate where guns won’t be welcome

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com The sign affixed to the door at EvenFlow Music and Spirits in downtown Geneva tells the message loud and clear – firearms are not welcome.

In light of the state’s new concealed-carry law, which recently went into effect, the restaurant has posted a sign approved by the Illinois State Police. Businesses have the right to do so under the new law.

On Jan. 1, people in Illinois were allowed to apply for the right to carry guns in their pockets or purses. A handgun carried on or about a person must be concealed from view of the public or on or about a person within a vehicle, according to the new law.

Gengler said he couldn’t remember the last time someone tried to bring a weapon into one of those buildings and ended up getting caught by the metal detector.

“Once in a while, you get someone bringing in a pocket knife,” he said.

Kane County board members have been talking about whether to adopt the state’s concealed carry law as written or to make it more restrictive.

County board member Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, said at a meeting last month that the policy must be consistent throughout the county’s buildings.

“I’m not going to frisk everybody that comes into the door,” he said.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, said he sees

the signs as a way to remind people where guns are prohibited.

“Because it is such a new thing, it will help remind those people who get a license and choose to carry,” Gengler said. “It’s the individual’s responsibility. Just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should do it.”

Beyond the signs, those doing business at the Kane County Judicial Center, the Kane County Courthouse and the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office first have to pass through a metal detector.

In addition, security officers stationed at the buildings are armed.

Snow removal taking toll on county budget

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As snow fell outside the Kane County Government Center on Wednesday morning, County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen told the Executive Committee that “truly uncontrollable” events such as this winter’s frequent snowstorms demonstrate the importance of managing budgets in all departments.

To date, he said, crews have been out 56 times compared to 19 times last year.

The average is 50 times per season, he said. This has led to costs nearing budget, Lauzen said.

Overtime costs have reached $222,000, leaving about $29,000 in that budget, he said.

Additionally, he said, county crews have used more than 10,000 tons of salt and spent about what it currently has budgeted.

The county does, however, have 4,000 tons of salt on hand and can received 5,000 tons from its supplier at the contracted price, Lauzen said.

“That is really a fortunate position,” he said.

Lauzen said these unfore-

seen costs demonstrate why it is important for the various county departments to manage their budgets.

As he did last week, Lauzen noted that Coroner Rob Russell went about $19,000 over budget last year.

The chairman further criticized the coroner for issuing a news release about the issue and for saying he hopes the board will help his office begin the process of appropriating capital for improvements.

Lauzen said it is a “sad irony” that the only person who didn’t contribute to the shortterm budgetary excess is the first one in line to “consume what other people have produced.”

Russell, who wasn’t at Wednesday’s meeting, said by phone that he issues news releases not to seek publicity but to tell the public the truth. He said it is unfair to compare his office with others in the county because he had to make adjustments for areas mandated by federal and state law – overtime pay and autopsy costs.

“All the other offices weren’t in violation of state and federal law,” Russell said. “My office was.”

A manager at the restaurant Wednesday said it was

“business as usual.” No one was injured in the fire. Firefighters arrived at the building at 154 W. Wilson St. at 7:04 p.m. The restaurant was closed on Tuesday after the fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a small electrical fire in back of the store that had been extinguished by an

employee with a fire extinguisher, according to a news release from the Batavia Fire Department. The fire caused no damage to the building and minimal smoke damage, the release stated.

The Kane County Health Department was notified to coordinate the cleanup of the business, the release stated.

Died: Jan. 16, 2014; in New River, Ariz.

DESERT HILLS, Ariz. – Rebecca (Bekah) Ann Speranske, born June 26, 1987, of Desert Hills, Ariz., and formerly of Batavia, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 16, in New River, Ariz. She is survived by her parents, Jeff and Vicki Speranske of Desert Hills; two sisters, Jamie (Douglas) Saam of Batavia and Katie Speranske of Desert Hills; her nephews, Dexter, Tucker and Maximilian Saam; grandmother, Jan Speranske of Desert Hills and formerly of Wheaton; and many other beloved family and friends.

Bekah attended cosmetology school at Wheaton Hair Professionals. She worked as a hairstylist through her own business, as well as SportClips.

Many of her clients shared that she was the only one who their children would sit for during a haircut and the only person they would trust to cut their own hair.

Bekah also was a nanny to four children in Arizona. Bekah showered love, knowledge, kindness and structure over them. She enjoyed taking the kids to storytime at the library, helping with their projects and homework, and spending lots of playtime outdoors and in the pool.

Bekah had a light inside of her that shined through her love and beaming smile. She had a strong Christian faith and desire to grow her relationship with her Lord and Savior. She was devoted in her friendships and relationships. Bekah enjoyed traveling, especially to sunny beaches.

Bekah loved to laugh, particularly while watching “Ellen,” “New Girl” or “Friends.” Country music ran through her veins. Bekah was always first in line for Country Thunder and first on the line to win tickets to any upcoming country concert. Bekah loved cuddling and taking naps with her nephews, whom she adored.

Bekah recently hiked Pinnacle Peak and Squaw Peak, truly enjoying the Arizona landscape and weather. Bekah was an avid Blackhawks, White Sox and Pack-

ers fan. Bekah delighted in giving her time to serve others through her church nursery, shaving heads for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and volunteering where needed. Bekah will be missed by all those who were blessed to meet her and get a glimpse of her light and love.

A memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Shannon Hall at 14 N. Van Buren St., Batavia, with a celebration of life to follow directly after.

A confidential settlement has been reached between West Aurora School District 129 and a former West Aurora High School student, who had been sexually abused by former West Aurora High School band director Stephen Orland.

Orland, formerly of North Aurora, pleaded guilty in 2012 to two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and was Stephen sentenced to 12 Orland years in prison.

Orland will have to serve at least six years in prison.

He had been charged with 27 counts that included battery, sexual assault and sexual abuse of two students.

The student, identified only as Jane Doe in the lawsuit, had sued Orland along with District 129, Superintendent James Rydland and then-Principal Dan Bridges.

Last month, Orland was dropped from the case. On Monday, Kane County Judge Keith Brown dismissed with

prejudice the suit against the other defendants, meaning it can’t be refiled. He also ordered that the settlement agreement be sealed.

The suit stated school officials failed to report Orland ’s behavior to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, as required by law.

According to the suit, Orland initiated a sexual relationship with the plaintiff in December 2009 or January 2010, when the plaintiff was a 16-year-old junior.

Last year, a 10-month Kane County State’s Attorney’s investigation found that possibly as many as 10 district employees had knowledge of suspected abuse by Orland but did not report it to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services as required by law.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon decided to defer for 60 months prosecuting against any district officials or employees in exchange for the district signing an agreement designed to protect students from abuse.

“We didn’t see evidence that somebody was trying to cover up or act in malice,” McMahon said at the time.

Joe McMahon Kane County State’s Attorney ney Joe McMahon said in the release that Mullen deserves to be in prison.

“Mr. Mullen took advantage of his friends for his own personal gain by threatening and inflicting violence them,” McMahon said.

On March 1, 2013, Mullen and an unidentified man entered a home in the 200 block of Laurel Drive in North Aurora.

The other man threatened to shoot the two residents if they didn’t remain seated on a sofa, and Mullen – whom the victims considered a friend – ran upstairs in search of a safe he knew contained money, according to the release.

While Mullen was upstairs, the gunman reportedly shot the residents’ pit bull terrier mix three times. The dog soon died.

The men left the house with the safe and cash, according to the release.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Christine Bayer and Alex Bederka prosecuted the case.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – An Aurora man will be sentenced this spring for his role in a North Aurora home invasion that left a couple terrorized and a dog dead, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Circuit Judge Karen Simpson on Tuesday convicted Quintin D. Mullen, 23, of home invasion, armed violence and armed robbery, all Class X felonies; two counts Quintin D. of aggravated Mullen discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony; two counts of aggravated unlawful restraint, a Class 3 felony; and one count of aggravated animal cruelty, a Class 4 felony.

Mullen had waived his right to a jury trial.

He faces a minimum sentence of 21 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to the release. He is expected in court at 1:30 p.m.

April 23 for motions and sentencing.

Mullen remains in the Kane County Jail, where he has been since his arrest. Bond was revoked upon conviction, according to the release.

How social media changed world

By VIVEK WADHWA Special to The Washington Post When Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg launched thefacebook.com in February 2004, even he could not imagine the forces it would unleash.

His intent was to connect college students. Facebook, which is what this website rapidly evolved into, ended up connecting the world.

To the children of this connected era, the world is one giant social network.

They are not bound – as were previous generations of humans – by what they were taught. They are limited by their curiosity and ambition.

Adults also are participating in this revolution. India’s normally docile middle class is speaking up against social ills. Silicon Valley executives are being shamed into adding women to their boards. Political leaders, such as President Barack Obama, are marshalling the energy of millions for elections and political causes. All of this is being done with social media technologies that Facebook and its competitors unleashed.

As does every advancing technology, social media has created many new problems. It is commonly addictive and provides a tool for stalking children.

Social media is used by extremists in the Middle East and elsewhere to solicit and brainwash recruits.

And it exposes us and our friends to unsavory spying.

On the brighter side, marketers are also seeing big opportunities. And there is no greater force for democracy than social media, and this will empower the masses.

Regardless of what social media people use and whether we celebrate Facebook’s next 10-year anniversary, one thing is certain – we are in a period of exponential change. The next decade will be even more amazing and unpredictable than the last.

How to out-macho the cold weather In the wake of the polar vortex and Atlanta’s “snow-pocalypse” of two dreadful inches, I’ve decided to develop some rather unconventional weather-handling techniques.

One must deal with a winter storm the same way a person deals with a fully-grown grizzly bear. No, not by running away and seeking immediate shelter like most rational humans, but by showing that 600-pound, 6-and-a-half-foot behemoth what a 150-pound runner from the Chicago suburbs can do.

Thankfully, I only try to muscle out an unstoppable force of nature and not a grizzly bear; that’d be just insane.

For most of these tips, I

recommend channeling the inner cold. To get in the right mindset, one can try skinny-dipping in the Fox River.

Always remember the bright orange floaties, however; safety remains key even during a brisk plunge.

Macho cold buster secret No. 1 – snuggle. Snuggling, sometimes considered cold’s worst nightmare, maintains the manly image while combating subzero temps.

Any object can serve as a sufficient snuggle apparatus – a pillow, a pet or a loved one (consenting and otherwise). Proper snuggle form requires maximum cuddle concentration, as well as a firm understanding of the difficult concept of napping.

Now, a few boundaries must exist for this cold buster secret. First of all, only 75 percent of the movie should be spent crying – anymore and one might run the risk of dry eyes in the morning.

Second, all those watching a heartwarming movie must have a crying buddy present equipped with a box of soft Kleenex. Yes, a crying buddy can double as a snuggle object.

In all seriousness, intensive training in the above skills can keep any unprepared citizen safe from the unusual weather patterns. By using sheer brawn, one can force the elements to wish they had stayed on break.

Each new year is an opportunity to grow and make our ancestors proud of our achievements. Each year we should all take part in celebrating the contributions of African-Americans to our country’s success – because it is our history.

African-American history and its celebration throughout February is just as vibrant today as it was when Woodson created it 88 years ago in 1926.

In the words of Lonnie Bunch, director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture: “It helps us to remember there is no more powerful force than a people steeped in their history. And there is no higher cause than honoring our struggle and ancestors by remembering.”

There was a time in this very nation where black history was undocumented and unknown, and Carter G. Woodson became inspired to preserve the history of African-Americans and accumulate a collection of thousands of artifacts and publications. He noted that African-American contributions “were overlooked, ignored and even suppressed by the writers of history textbooks and the teachers who use them.”

Some have and still question the need for Black History Month celebrations.

Thankfully, in many places, we have steered away from apologizing and being defensive about the need, for us as a people, to celebrate our history.

A real standout A’ Salute Lounge & Grill prides itself on homemade food, unique atmosphere

he owners of A’ Salute Lounge & Grill hope their restaurant stands out from all the other dining options out there.

The restaurant opened in December in Foxboro Plaza, in the former East Side Pub & Grill location at 2400 E. Main St. in St. Charles.

“You have all your sports bars and college bars on the west side of the river, but really nothing on this side, and I thought we could use this, something a little bit more in our age group,” said Eddie Caruso, 55, of St. Charles, who owns A’ Salute Lounge and Grill with fellow St. Charles resident Gus Donzelli, 61.

“It’s a upper scale lounge and grill.”

The two have been friends for 15 years. The idea to open a restaurant together has been brewing for several years.

“We’ve been scoping around for the last three years,” Caruso said.

Salute means “cheers” in Italian, and that’s exactly the atmosphere the owners hope they convey. They look for the lounge to be a place that people can call their home away from home.

“This is what a lounge means,” Donzelli said. “We wanted a place where people could relax after a hard day’s work, have a nice cocktail and enjoy the ambiance and entertainment that we have.”

A’ Salute has a DJ on Friday nights and live entertainment on Saturday nights.

The menu features small sandwiches called “trios,” which are served in threes.

“I wanted it to be more of an upscale grill,” Caruso said. “It’s something different.”

His family has previously been in the restaurant business. Other items on the menu include the turkey burger trio, beef filet slider trio, Angus beefburger trio and chicken caprese trio.

All the trio sandwiches are served with fries and are priced between $6 and $10.

“I think it’s priced moderately,” Donzelli said. “And they’re real fries, too, not processed or anything.”

All the food is made with love by cook Gino Battista, who also has restaurant experience.

“It’s all from the soul,” Battista said. “You have to have a passion for it.”

He sees the restaurant and its customers as being “one big family.”

“We do nothing but have a good time and laugh and cook,” Battista said. “But that’s the way Italian people are.”

A’ Salute also has a full bar and specializes in martinis and wines.

“We will prepare any type of drink you could possibly want,” Donzelli said. “Our specialty is the A’ Salute, which is a red raspberry martini with fresh raspberries.”

Winemaker spotlight Even the trees lean to the right at Melville.

The winds blow west to east off the frigid Pacific Ocean and rush up against their white bark and leafless branches.

They cast a shadow across the tasting room and an adjacent block of densely planted pinot noir. Sixteen different pinot noir clones grow on the 120-acre estate where the vines are planted in north and south direction.

The wind helps moderate temperature, yet the north and south rows help insulate the vineyard from getting too cold.

But, the real story is the lack of water. A normal growing season has 15 inches of rain. The last two years combined to produce 14 inches of rain.

This year, trace amounts have fallen.

The marine-based, sandy-loam soil at Melville could use a good soaking – for the growing season and just to get the cover crop started.

“The big story is the lack of water,” Melville tasting room assistant Jules Reuter said. “We are all concerned. All of California is in drought; from here to Paso Robles is extreme drought.”

Everyone in the area is hoping February, traditionally the rainiest month on the calendar, has several rain events that ease the drought’s impact.

Planted in 1997, the vines at Melville run deep, and a drip system helps ensure their well-being.

“The drought has caused all kinds of problems. This is an agricultural area not just for vines but for row crops,” Reuter said. “What that means is there will be a tremendous amount of pressure

put on the area’s water table. All the water required will be sucked out of the ground unless the water table is replenished. There are potentially a lot of big-time economic problems. Everything is tinder dry here. The vines are pretty sturdy though – we can always drip water them to make sure they are OK. We’re farmers. We don’t buy the grapes; we grow them.”

Despite the weather conditions, 2013 turned out to be a solid harvest.

“In 2013, despite the lack of rain, we got a great crop,” Reuter said. “There was perfect weather, and we had large clusters and berries. It was an above-average crop last year. We had very even weather with high-quality fruit.”

“We are growers, not makers, of wine,” Reuter said. “There is no new oak at all. Our barrels are at least five years old. All the flavor comes from the vineyard. We use the vines’ brown stems for the tannin, which is one of our signatures. Because we get good air flow in the vineyard it helps stems get brown and woody. It makes for great, ageable food wines with great acidity.”

With an extreme drought in place, the Melville Vineyard, surrounding hills and every parcel of land that wasn’t irrigated by a sprinkler system looked like the lunar surface.

This wasn’t the wintertime Santa Rita Hills that I’d come to know.

The sun blazed down brightly; there was no fog in the morning; the temperatures rose into the mid 70s; and everywhere I went the same question was asked.

When is it going to rain?

Everyone wants water in the Santa Rita Hills. The state has experienced three years of drought – the most extreme being in the stretch from Santa Barbara to Paso Robles. This 125-mile span is where spectacular vineyards produce world-class wines.

The drought hasn’t affected quality, though. The wines are still great.

– say, Alden-Hebron, which Mooseheart walloped, 89-44, Tuesday – and teams such as Limestone and Curie is about as dramatic as it comes, but Ramblers guard Hameed Odunewu thinks his team will be able to rise to the occasion.

“I think one of the things that is going to help us transition is the fact that when we played those teams we were able to blow out, we didn’t play to their level,” Odunewu said. “We still played them like they were a great team, and by doing that, we’re going to transition to the next game.

Not saying we’re going to blow out the next teams we play but the way we play isn’t going to change because we’ve been working just as hard as if they were a good team.”

Ahrens said the Curie matchup – part of a quadrupleheader Feb. 16 at Northside Prep – “kind of fell in my lap.”

Event organizer John Hodel recently called Ahrens, whose team had an opening after an early-season trip to Indianapolis was wiped out by inclement weather.

Playing Curie means the Ramblers’ enormous front line must deal with Kansas recruit Cliff Alexander, considered one of the elite high school players in the country.

The high-rising Odunewu dunked over Alexander in a summer game at DePaul’s team camp, but Odunewu said “then the next four possessions, [Alexander] came down and dunked it like every, single time, so all I did was

tick him off a little bit.”

In the summer meeting, Mooseheart played without Puou, who was dealing with dehydration. A terrific shot blocker, Puou will be a focal point of the Ramblers’ plans against Alexander.

“I’ve studied his game and, I think how should I defend,” Puou said. “I’m not going to say I’m going to shut him down but I think I’m going to try my best on him. He’s very strong on the baseline so if you give him baseline, there’s no way you’re going to stop him at all.”

Mooseheart will play in the opening round of the Northeastern Athletic Conference tournament Friday before turning its attention to the Night of Hoops battle with

Limestone, which finished third in Class 3A last year.

Regardless of how the Ramblers fare against Limestone and Curie, playing high-end opponents should be beneficial before Mooseheart begins the postseason as one of the 1A state favorites later this month.

“I’m hoping with Night of Hoops and with Curie that we see so much speed that when we get into the playoffs, that everyone’s going to look slow,” Ahrens said. “Because in all honesty, last year in our sectionals, Chicagoland Jewish was quicker than us.

They put on pressure that we couldn’t handle.”

As much as Mooseheart has beefed up its schedule the past two seasons, the Ramblers maintained many of their traditional opponents, which should pay longterm dividends. Ahrens is well aware it will be back to scheduling reality for Mooseheart next winter.

“I didn’t want to lose everyone,” Ahrens said. “I love playing Paw Paw. I love playing Leland, who we’ve played for 15 years. I love playing Indian Creek, who we’ve played for 15 years. I couldn’t go overboard and say let’s just scrap this schedule and get [a new schedule] for two years, and then I don’t have any of those guys. I never wanted to do that.”

OOSEHEART – Mooseheart boys basketball coach Ron Ahrens recognizes that in another month or so, his phone number no longer will carry the cachet in the hoops community that it does now.

For now, though, Ahrens and the Red Ramblers are delighted to answer the unprecedented calls that have come their way, including an invitation to participate in Batavia’s prestigious Night of Hoops showcase Saturday.

This isn’t your older sibling’s Ramblers schedule, not with games like a Night of Hoops rumble with downstate powerhouse Bartonville Limestone and a Feb. 16 matchup against Curie – the state’s top-ranked team – on the schedule.

Those kind of marquee dates came about thanks to the presence of South Sudanese standouts Akim Nyang (7-foot-1), Makur Puou (6-10) and Mangisto Deng (6-7), seniors who are nearing the end of their decorated two-year careers at Mooseheart.

“When they were sitting out their sophomore year, I was already bugging Batavia High School,” Ahrens said. “I was saying ‘Hey, get us up in there, get us up in there, we’d love to play that high competition [at Night of Hoops].

We’ll play anyone, just let us know.’ ” Mooseheart (18-2) has won 17 straight games since a lukewarm start to the season against a formidable Thanksgiving tournament field in Canton, but many of those victories have come against fellow Class 1A schools, most of which the Ramblers have crushed.

Pawlak at home in middle America Sami Pawlak didn’t want to even take a look at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

“To be honest, my dad made me come on the visit because I was like, ‘There’s nothing in Nebraska,’ ” she said.

But once she arrived in the state’s largest city, the 2013 Geneva graduate quickly found her opinion changing.

“Omaha itself is a big surprise,” she said. “You wouldn’t expect it to be so big and nice.”

With a metro area of almost 1 million people, Pawlak said there are plenty of things for her to do with her teammates when they have free time.

“We sometimes go downtown and out to eat and out to movies and stuff,” she said.

While the city was a revelation, that wasn’t the primary reason the 6-foot freshman forward decided to play basketball for the Mavericks. She said she “fell in love with the coaches” on her visit.

“They are like the nicest people I’ve ever met,” she said.

The athletic department is headed by former ESPN college football analyst Trev Alberts, who was an All-American defensive end at Nebraska and also played for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Last October, Alberts chose Lange, then a 26-year-old assistant coach, to be interim coach of the Nebraska-Omaha women’s basketball team. She replaced Chance Lindley, who resigned suddenly for personal reasons.

“We had a lot more thrown at us in the beginning of the season than most people experience in their whole life at college,” Pawlak said. “We had a couple coaches change and a couple girls injured.”

After the Mavericks started the season 8-5, the interim label was removed from Lange’s title on Dec. 31. Since then, however, the team has struggled in Summit League play, winning just one of seven conference games. Nebraska-Omaha enters Thursday’s league tilt at Western Illinois on a five-game losing skid.

“We haven’t been doing our best,” Pawlak said. “We only have three returners. There’s five freshmen.”

ON CAMPUS Dennis D. Jacobs The three returning players to the team didn’t necessarily have a ton of experience. The Mavericks started four seniors last season.

Given those circumstances, Pawlak doesn’t feel bad about the season.

“I think we’re actually doing very well and I think in the future we’re going to be very strong,” she said.

Pawlak could be a big part of that future. She’s averaging 5.8 points and 4.2 rebounds a game and broke into the starting lineup for Nebraska-Omaha’s two most recent games.

“That first game was the most nerve-wracking moment of my life,” Pawlak said.

“I think I played well.”

Pawlak scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the contest, an 81-71 loss to IPFW. She had three assists and did not commit a turnover.

She said the support of her coaches and teammates helped calm her nerves.

“Our whole team is really supportive of one another,” Pawlak said. “There’s only 11 of us, so we’re a close-knit team. I can tell you everything about all the other players.”

Pawlak played AAU basketball for the Illinois Hustle.

Her play with the Hustle and at Geneva drew the attention of plenty of college recruiters.

Army, Boston University, and Rhode Island were among the schools offering scholarships.

Pawlak visited Boston U. and Colgate, but returned from her trip feeling there was something lacking in the manners of people on the East Coast.

“The Midwest is something special,” she said. “I don’t think you could find anyplace else where people treat you like you’re at home.”

“She’s a great player and a great person, too,” LaPorte said.

After competing for Geneva as a freshman and sophomore, Serra elected to play club-only during the 2012-13

time.

Last fall, Colorado State coach Bill Hempen told Serra that each of the Rams’ Mountain West matches felt like a rivalry game.

“I’m ready for the competitiveness,” said Serra, who expressed uncertainty about returning to the high school team this spring.

If nothing else, the past two years proved as much.

On Wednesday, Serra took a moment for a detour on her way to the mountains.

Just win, baby: Wisconsin-Whitewater captured its fourth NCAA Division III national football title in five seasons in 2013.

Three weeks before the Warhawks reigned again, Batavia rolled to the IHSA Class 6A crown.

Visions of trophies weren’t the only thing swirling in Bulldogs defensive lineman James Millette’s head during his campus visit, but the coincidence sure eased his decision.

“It was the best fit for me, and I like to win championships, so … ,” Millette said.

Millette joins Batavia wide receiver Jordan Zwart, a classmate since their days at Hoover-Wood Elementary School, at Whitewater.

GENEVA – Weaving past onlookers in the Geneva gymnasium foyer as smoothly as she darts through the midfield, Ally Serra posed for her share of pictures Wednesday and shook her share of hands.

The Geneva senior committed to play women’s soccer at Colorado State in November, but national signing day always has a way of refreshing athletes’ accomplishments.

With every encounter, Serra relived the reason that might just entitle her to smile a little wider, to showcase that green and gold sweatshirt a little more proudly.

Two years ago, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

Now she’s an NCAA Division I recruit. Walking on air before playing in altitude suited Serra just fine.

“I took that [cancer], made myself work twice as hard as any other athlete, and it really made me stronger, and I never gave up,” Serra said. “Because I knew there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, and I just fought through it.”

Serra, a center-midfielder, was the second of three girls soccer recruits to sign letters of intent at Geneva.

Kelly LaPorte (West Virginia) led off before Michaela Loebel (Nebraska) followed shortly after.

Serra has played club soccer for Geneva-based Strikers Fox Valley alongside the pair since elementary school, teaming with Loebel in third grade and LaPorte in fifth.

“So we’ve had the whole ride together,” Serra said.

“We’ve really grown as teammates and soccer players together.”

Make no mistake, Serra endured personal trials with her teammates since discovering a lump protruding from her throat early in her sophomore year.

Surgery removed the lump, but a biopsy revealed cancer, prompting a string of three surgeries, two radiation sessions and “a bunch of other treatments and doctor appointments” in the ensuing two years.

High school girls season is played in the spring, after the fall club season, and she didn’t want to risk complicating her recovery.

“I was always playing within those two years, but there was always two weeks at a time I’d have to take off for treatments, or recovering from a surgery could take up to a few months,” Serra said.

“It just depended on how rigorous the surgery was.”

Serra endured her final surgery in June and is nearing a year of full recovery.

She visits the doctor for check-ups every six months, but there’s no dread this

“He was really happy,” Millette said. “There’s a lot of guys going to the next level. I mean, everybody earned it, so it’s a good feeling. Going to college is going to be good for everybody.”

‘Texas’ bound for Terre Haute: Kaneland defensive lineman Justin Diddell doubles as the Knights’ 285-pound wrestler, a role he doesn’t take lightly even though he knows he won’t duplicate it in college.

That loyalty helped erase any trepidation after last month’s commitment to Indiana State. The Sycamores appealed to Diddell – known as “Texas” at the Maple Park high school – from the start, and he wasn’t thrilled about filling his weekends with official visits elsewhere because it would mean missing wrestling tournaments.

“I liked their program. I liked the coaches there. They’re all really nice,” Diddell said.

“And so I decided, ‘Hey, if I like the school, I like all the coaches, I like all the teammates, I might as well just go ahead and commit.’ And then it’s been a lot of stress relieved.”

Look out, Indy: Reece Conroyd finished high high school career as St. Charles North’s career tackles leader, but the linebacker was self-assured well before he reached that milestone.

“You have to have the mindset in football that you’re the best out there,” Conroyd said.

“You have to think that all the time, or else someone is going to show up and beat you.”

Conroyd will take his credo to Division-II Indianapolis with an eye on gradually becoming a Greyhounds great.

Hearing his would-be teammates speak about the program

during a campus visit piqued his interest immediately. Players fielded questions from parents and recruits in a room without coaches, and Conroyd respected the way “they gave it to you straight.”

“You go somewhere and you feel like you belong there because you have the same values and the same outlook of what you want out of the game,” Conroyd said.

Pitt offered Brown a spot as a preferred walk-on after his diligent pattern of sending highlight clips to Division I coaches finally paid dividends.

The Panthers actually were the only team to respond to Brown’s blitz, doing so within about 90 minutes.

Knowing he had a sure offer to play at Central Missouri, Brown decided to head southwest instead of east. He’s happily absorbed any ribbing about his new team’s nickname.

IN THE GROOVE ST. CHARLES EAST What the Saints did: The two-time defending Upstate Eight Conference champion Saints earned a comfortable dual victory against DeKalb on Friday and enter the state series on a sizable roll.

NOTEWORTHY Saints want to deliver on ‘high hopes’ St. Charles East’s bid to snap Glenbard North’s run of 13 successive team regional titles Saturday figures to hinge on any bouts between the Saints and Panthers.

Other matches at the IHSA Class 3A South Elgin Regional also are significant, however, and the Saints arguably hold a leg up after seeing the rest of the field en route to winning the recent Upstate Eight Conference tournament.

“We looked at matchups with kids that we know we need to beat [Saturday], and we’re going to fix those things and make sure that we beat those kids in a match,” East coach Jason Potter said.

East competed just once between conference and regionals, defeating DeKalb in a home dual Friday. Concern about ramping up the focus again come the weekend is nonexistent.

“Our mentality is very high in the wrestling room.

“We’re competing to be No. 1 for regionals so we can go downstate as a team. Potter has high hopes for our team.

So do I, if we all wrestle like I know we can.”

Cadets’ objective: ‘Making a statement’ There’s no shortage of confidence at Marmion, either.

Considering the program’s recent track record – including two 3A champions and a team state berth last season – that’s elementary.

“We plan on coming out strong as usual, making a statement,” said Cadets sophomore 152-pounder Trace Carello, a North Aurora resident. “The plan is to win the regionals and get into the team sectional. We’re always looking to do well.”

Another challenging sched-

ule of regional and national tournaments steeled Marmion for the state series. It was especially beneficial for any Cadets who remained healthy throughout the winter.

“Everyone gets banged up during the wrestling season,” Carello said. “I mean, it just happens. I really haven’t been banged up too much this season, but everyone around me seemed to be getting banged up.”

Marmion’s health is in a much better place as regionals loom.

Inspired Knights aiming high Dan Goress achieved something no other Kaneland wrestler had in 20 years by winning a Class 2A state title last season.

While graduation kept the former 145-pounder from trying for a repeat, there are plenty of Knights wanting to join him in program lore.

“You’ve got to set a goal out there if you’re going to keep going with it,” freshman 126-pounder Matthew Redman said. “One day, I’d like to be on that podium at state, but I’ve just got to keep pushing forward and keep trying and keep practicing.”

Kaneland also produced multiple state place-winners last season for the first time since 1993, bolstering the atmosphere in the mat room this winter.

The Knights hope a strong week of practice propels them into Saturday’s 2A Belvidere Regional, but also are putting stock in Friday’s narrow dual victory against Batavia, a 3A school.

“That got us on a roll and got the momentum going,” Kaneland coach Monty Jahns said. “It was an exciting meet.”

Friday’s mini Upstate Eight/Northern Illinois Big 12 challenge was a push. While UEC champion East handled DeKalb in a home dual, host Batavia – the UEC’s fourth-place inisher – suffered a narrow defeat to Kaneland, which placed sixth in the NI Big 12 tournament.

ELGIN – Janie McCloughan notched a double-double Wednesday while Sidney Santos almost had a triple-double. It all added up to a romp for the Geneva girls basketball team.

The Vikings defeated Larkin, 60-34, in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game behind 16 points and 14 rebounds from McCloughan. Santos added nine points, eight assists and eight rebounds.

Geneva (18-5, 8-2 UEC River) is one game behind Batavia as it seeks its fourth straight UEC River title. The Vikings play at Elgin tonight before visiting St. Charles North on Saturday.

ACS girls hoops tops Mooseheart MOOSEHEART – The Aurora Christian girls basketball team topped host Mooseheart, 67-34, to improve to 13-12.

Alyssa Andersen scored 16 points to lead the Eagles, while Kirsten Madsen added nine.

Kammie Kolb (eight points) and Rocio Sanchez (seven) paced the Red Ramblers.

Kaneland girls bowling falls LISLE – Dominique Lee (498 series), Christie Crews (474) and Katie Hill (455) sparked a balanced attack for Kaneland, but it wasn’t quite enough in the Knights’ 2,226-2,191 loss to Lisle at Lisle Lanes.

Lee (184) edged Hill (183) for the team’s high-game honors. Both scores came in the team’s third game.

Carey likened recruiting to “herding a flock” on Wednesday, and in 2013, he was a few shepherds short, as teams across the country plucked various coaches after the Huskies reached their first BCS bowl in program history.

The class ranked second in the Mid-American Conference

“Last year’s class we were really proud of as well, but we did that one short-handed,” Carey said. “With this one, all of our guys who we brought in know all of the coaches. There isn’t any

familiarity that has to be developed there. We’ve had 13 months to do that. We really feel fortunate about that.”

This year’s class includes nine defensive backs, which Carey listed an area of need after losing several to graduation this season.

The Huskies also brought in five wide receivers, five defensive backs and a pair of quarterbacks.

The highest-rated recruits in the class, according to Rivals, are offensive lineman Shane Evans, defensive back Deion Hamilton and quarterback Landon Root.

“Offensively we didn’t have a ton of skill leave us this year … but we wanted to get ahead of that with the wide receivers,” Carey said. “We knew, if you look at last year’s class with the DBs we brought in, and then if you look at this year’s DBs, that we’re addressing that need before it really came to fruition, and we feel like we’re right on

time with it.”

After rushing to try to keep his flock together in 2013 after Doeren left for North Carolina State, Carey was able to take his time this year. Newfound name recognition brought on by making a BCS Bowl, holding a national ranking for most of the 2013 season and a Heisman run by quarterback Jordan Lynch certainly helped him cobble together this year’s class, but simply being around with a full staff for a year made life much easier for the second-year coach.

“As far as the relationship development, starting early last year, that was really the first round, and I think it went, as much as you can say, as expected,” Carey said. “I don’t know that there was anything that caught me by surprise. ... You are really trying to herd the full flock, and try to get around and be everything to everybody, and you want to be that, but that means you can’t just focus on one thing.”

Chicago Sun-Times SAN FRANCISCO – Talk of fourth-quarter playing time and who is or isn’t in the game in the final minutes is dead.

It was read its final rites and put to rest, as far as Tom Thibodeau was concerned

by Wednesday.

And it had nothing to do with Carlos Boozer hitting a key basket with 1:43 left in the eventual 101-92 victory against the Phoenix Suns 24 hours earlier.

Boozer had made waves about not playing enough late in games, and while he seemed to get his wish, well, he might not want to get too comfortable with the idea that this will be a new trend.

“This is four years now [as the Bulls coach], I’m not changing,” Thibodeau insisted after the victory. “I’m going with the guys that I feel give us the best chance to win, and I don’t care who they are. When we hit that six-minute mark it’s based on what we’re doing and what we need. That’s the way it’s going to be.

“Carlos is a very important part of the team. I need him to play well, I need Taj [Gibson] to play well, I need everyone to play well. For our team to achieve what we ultimately want to achieve, we need to be playing well.

“This isn’t about one person. I’m asking everyone on the team to sacrifice. It’s not just Carlos sacrificing or Taj sacrificing, but I’m asking the entire team to sacrifice for each other, so the team is always going to come first.”

What also won’t be changing anytime soon is Thibodeau letting his team feel good about itself. That was a crime they were guilty of after starting off this six-game trip with a victory in San Antonio, only to stumble badly in New Orleans and Sacramento.

That’s why Thibodeau called a meeting during Tuesday’s shootaround.

“Thibs had a great speech

Bulls at Golden State, 9:30 p.m. today, WGN, TNT, AM-1000 before the [victory Tuesday against the Suns],” Gibson said. “He kept it simple. He just said go out there and play hard, play for one another. This is what we got, no one is going to help us.”

The result was a nine-point triumph over the 29-19 Suns, who were 16-8 at home.

Thibodeau said it was about doing all the little things. But now it’s about bottling it and getting back to some sustained winning.

Therein lies the challenge with this Bulls team.

“You have the grind of the season, and sometimes you don’t realize you’re doing that,” Thibodeau said. “In your quest to get things going, maybe you dance with the ball, try to make something happen. It’s difficult to make something happen individually. You have to make it happen collectively. When you do that, you give your team a good chance to win.

“Like I told these guys [in the meeting], the intentions were good, but we were misguided. We made the necessary corrections, and we’re going to be challenged the same way by Golden State [on Thursday].”

Good words, but words that some players already knew.

“We knew before Thibs said it,” Joakim Noah said. “We knew [after the Kings] game that [against the Suns] we were going to be on some other [expletive].

“We got punched in the mouth in New Orleans, we got punched in the mouth in Sacramento. We just wanted to come out [against the Suns], compete as a team. That was a big one for us. The more the adversity, the more we show that we can take our games to another level.”

Rating the coaching/GM changes Seven NFL teams, including the Texans, Titans, Vikings, Bucs, Lions, Redskins and Browns, have new coaches to begin the 2014 season and Tampa Bay and Miami have new general managers.

To pick the winners and losers as a result before any of these men have even had a chance to meet with their players for the first time would be silly.

But there is no question that some teams did better than others in how they handled the process of change.

The Houston Texans get extremely high marks for moving the quickest and decisively to hire exactly the guy they wanted before anyone else could claim him.

Bill O’Brien was on about everybody’s list and Houston is the perfect situation for him, an offensive-minded coach who with all his Texans back healthy will have almost everything he needs to contend immediately.

The Tennessee Titans are a close second and they’d be first had they not

handled the firing of Mike Munchack so embarrassingly badly. Ken Whisenhunt is another coach who was on every team’s list, was thought to be ticketed for Detroit, and owner Tommy Smith and General manager Ruston Webster pulled quite a coup getting him to come to Nashville.

Some questioned the Minnesota Vikings following Leslie Frazier with another defensive coordinator in Mike Zimmer, but the dominance of clubs like Seattle, San Francisco and Carolina this year is making G.M. Rick Spielman look pretty smart.

Zimmer is one of those guys who got passed over a half dozen times in recent years and nobody understood why. He’s an outstanding defensive coach whose

players will run through walls for him, and the addition of veteran Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator is a perfect fit.

Lovie Smith in Tampa is a mixed bag. Lovie knows how to win and will probably win quickly – in the regular season – with Gerald McCoy, Lavonte David and Darrelle Revis ready to go on defense and Doug Martin, Carl Nicks and Davin Joseph all returning from injury or illness to go along with Vincent Jackson. There is some real talent there.

But giving him complete control and allowing him to hire his own G.M., Jason Licht and then add Jeff Tedford as his offensive coordinator was a huge mistake. Neither is close to the best hire he could have made and Tampa may be good but never good enough as a result.

The hiring of Jim Caldwell in Detroit and Jay Gruden in Washington are tough to call.

Caldwell won with Tony Dungy’s team in Indianapolis and then it all fell

apart on him just two years later. Now he needs to assemble a winner. Good man, good coach but don’t know if he’s the right one.

Jay Gruden did a nice but not spectacular job running the offense in Cincinnati, but Daniel Snyder has ruined a lot more accomplished coaches than him.

The interesting part about Mike Pettine is he’s a good football coach and may surprise a lot of people in Cleveland.

The question you have to ask about new Dolphin G.M. Dennis Hickey is after doing a nice job of acquiring talent as the Personnel Director in Tampa, why wasn’t he a candidate there, particularly when they hired the somewhat underwhelming Licht?

Maybe that doesn’t sound like much, but it is. Multiply the age difference by 53 players, and that’s a collective gap of more than 79 years on the two teams’ rosters.

As for the age thing, it’s a bit scary for the Bears because not only are they old from an NFL team point of view, 29th oldest

in the league on opening day this season. But they couldn’t have been more average in 2013, finishing 8-8. Old and good you can live with, but old and average is definitely a problem.

Now you know why both Phil Emery and Marc Trestman were so adamant about making the Bears younger on defense in their season-ending news conference. Youth often translates to speed, athleticism and aggression in the NFL, and you saw what the Seahawks have been able to do with that.

In a sport where the average career is 3½ years and players start down the backside of the hill after six to eight years in the league, every other starter on offense has been in the league at least six seasons except Matt Slauson, who’s in his fifth year, and Jordan Mills, who while a nice find, isn’t what I’d call a young talent to get excited about. On defense the players you want to keep – Julius Peppers, Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, Tim Jennings and maybe D.J. Williams – are all in their 30s.

The Bears can definitely compete for another year or two with Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall, etc., but if you want to compare them to Seattle, San Francisco or Carolina, you’ve got to rebuild the whole roster, not just find a few more players on defense.

Hub. Time for me to eat some crow. As the Super Bowl quickly got out of hand, I had to concede to your argument that a dominant defense was more important than a dominant offense when it came to winning a title. This is a pretty big deal, as I admit to being wrong about once every seven years.

So here’s my next thought, and I hope I’m wrong about this one, too. The Seahawks are going to be really good for the foreseeable future, and that’s bad news for other NFC contenders such as the Bears.

The Seahawks’ average age in 2013 was 25.4, according to Pro

during the Super Bowl. Just because the Bears want to get young and athletic isn’t going to change the fact the Seahawks are young, athletic and better. Same goes for the 49ers (average age: 26), the Packers (25.4), the Eagles (25.8), and a bunch of other talented teams in the NFC. Arkush: Here’s the tough part of all this to swallow. At some point the Bears have to pay the price for a decade of terrible drafting under Jerry Angelo and a pretty rough rookie campaign for Emery, while all those other clubs you just mentioned were doing a much better job.

Too many people focused on the lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball this year when the real problem is if you look across the entire Bears roster the only exciting young talent you’ll find to build around are Alshon Jeffery and Kyle Long.

There are so many things to like about “The Lego Movie,” including a great voice cast and clever dialogue.

‘The Lego Movie’: Throwing out the booklet

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post There are so many things to like about “The Lego Movie”: a great voice cast, clever dialogue and a handsome blend of stop-motion and CGI animation that feels lovingly retro, while still looking sharp in 21st-century 3-D. But the best thing about this movie, which was produced in full partnership with the Danish toymaker famous for its plastic-brick building system, is its subversive nature. While clearly filled with affection for – and marketing tie-ins to – the titular product that’s front and center, it’s also something of a sharp plastic brick flung in the eye of its corporate sponsor.

Once celebrated for fostering creativity through simple yet versatile sets that could be combined into a wide variety of structures – a barn, a boat, a plane – the 80-year old Lego company is probably best known today as a purveyor of narrowly proscribed model kits with hundreds of highly specialized pieces designed to replicate, in meticulous detail, say, the A-wing starfighter from “Star Wars,” and nothing else.

The most essential item of the modern Lego set has

become, unfortunately, the instruction booklet.

Thankfully, and somewhat surprisingly, “The Lego Movie” takes dead aim at this disturbing trend, undermining, with delightful results, the hegemony of a creative toy that comes with its own set of inflexible rules. “The Lego Movie” is an homage to the spirit of the iconoclast (i.e., the child).

Its hero, ironically, is anything but a rule-breaker.

Set in a world built entirely of Legos, the story revolves around construction worker Emmet Brickowski (voice of Chris Pratt), a tiny plastic Everyman who loves nothing better than following instructions. But when his Lego universe is threatened by an evil villain (Will Ferrell) who intends to glue all the world’s pieces – and its people – together, Emmet must join forces with a group of rebels to stop him. (In a nod to the term Lego uses to designate its in-house designers, these creative free spirits are known as “master builders.”)

Guided by a leader who’s part Gandalf and part Morpheus (Morgan Freeman), this underground resistance movement consists of a fittingly motley crew: a punkish loner named Wyldstyle

(Elizabeth Banks); her egotistical boyfriend, Batman (Will Arnett); a well-worn Lego spaceman figure from the mid-1980s (Charlie Day); and a robot-pirate hybrid named Metal Beard (Nick Offerman). The rest of the freedom fighters are a cheeky mix of Lego-sized historical personages (Abraham Lincoln, Shakespeare and Shaquille O’Neil) and co-branded comic book heroes (Green Lantern, Superman, Wonder Woman and others).

Keep an ear out for cameos by such stars as Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Billy Dee Williams, good-naturedly reprising his role as Lando Calrissian from the “Star Wars” trilogy. It’s hard not to have fun when the film (written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller) is having such a good time with pop culture.

The chief party animal, of course, is Ferrell. Overplaying his character, Lord Business, like a distant cousin of his dim-witted “Megamind” villain, the actor once again gets tons of comic mileage out of his patented silly grandiloquence. (“Nail polish remover” – a deadly weapon if you’re a plastic toy and your face has been painted on – becomes, in Ferrell’s threat-

ening delivery, the “poe-leash remover of nah-eel.”)

“The Lego Movie” pokes fun at anyone who would argue that Lego products are, as one character puts it, “a highly sophisticated, interlocking brick system,” and not simply toys. But it also makes fun of itself, tweaking the conventions of narrative filmmaking, animation and Lego model-making itself. It’s a constant pleasure to discover how the animators have figured out how to render such un-bricklike substances as water, soap bubbles, the steam from a locomotive or flames.

The moral of this story is a sweet and uncomplicated one.

Believe in yourself; everyone is special; there’s a time to follow the rules and a time to break them. They sound like something you’d see on one of those stupid, inspirational cat posters, don’t they?

As it turns out, that’s exactly how a character in this adorably acerbic little movie describes them.

• “The Lego Movie” received three-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated PG and contains mild action and some rude, nose-thumbing humor. It runs 94 minutes.

Gentle stretching helps relieve stiff, painful hands Dear Doctor K: I’m bothered by pain and stiffness in my hands.

It’s nothing significant, but enough to interfere with some tasks. Are there any exercises that might help?

Dear Reader: You never realize how many different and essential things you do with your hands until something happens to them.

Pain, stiffness or swollen joints can transform even a simple task into a painful ordeal. And millions of people have problems using their hands.

Fortunately, the right exercises may help. Start by asking your doctor if you should work with a hand therapist – an occupational or physical therapist who has specialized education and training in hand rehabilitation.

The first thing the therapist will do is evaluate your hand’s range of motion and strength, as well as any pain, swelling or physical limitations. Based on these observations, he or she will suggest specific exercises to suit your needs.

When a joint hurts, you use it less – and thereby experience less pain. So far, so good. But when you don’t use a joint, it tends to stiffen further. Sometimes it gets “frozen” and can no longer do

Take your thumb, for example.

Hold your hands straight out in front of you, palms down. Spread the fingers wide apart and point the tips of your thumbs as far as they will go up toward the ceiling.

Now with the tip of the thumb touch the very bottom of the little finger of the same hand. If you could not do that, the full range of motion of your thumbs has been lost. And you may have trouble doing many things each day that you previously took for granted, such as opening a jar.

Exercises can help increase the range of motion of a joint such as a thumb. The exercises involve gentle stretching (a little pain, but worth the gain).

The exercises also involve strengthening the muscles that move the joint. Put a finger on the skin below the base of your thumb. Now with the tip of the thumb touch the bottom of your little finger again, and feel what’s happening under the skin. You can feel the muscle that moves

your thumb get thick and tense.

That’s because it’s working.

But when you avoid using your thumb and fingers, the muscles that move them get weak.

To regain the full use of your hand, you may need exercises to strengthen muscles that have weakened from disuse.

If you do repetitive tasks, such as typing or gripping gardening tools, your muscles may shorten and become tight and painful.

Stretching exercises help lengthen your muscles and tendons.

These exercises are particularly helpful for people who work at computers for long time periods.

Perform these exercises slowly and deliberately to avoid pain and injury. If you feel numbness or sharp pain during or after exercising, stop and contact your doctor. Dr. Wallace: I’m terribly disappointed that you told a girl to “nark” on her 15-year-old brother when she caught him drinking beer with his friends at a party.

I’m sure her brother was just curious and had a few sips just to see what it tasted like. All teenagers experiment with lots of different things when they are young, but it doesn’t mean they are going to become addicted.

When I was a young teen, I also felt the urge to try a few things and found out that I didn’t like the taste of beer, so I have never had another beer. Same with cigarettes, and I can’t stand the smell of secondhand smoke to this day.

Nobody likes a nark.

And I think being a nark is a worse crime than trying a beer. My older brother and I are very close, and I would never even consider narking on him, regardless of what he had done. Please reconsider your answer.

I don’t think this kind of relationship is right. Is it because I’m 81 years old and some say that I’m “old fashioned”? – Arthur, Clarkfield, Minn.

Dear Arthur: When you were a teenager, this kind of relationship was rare and definitely frowned upon. Not so today. It’s fairly common for couples to live together without being married.

You are not old fashioned. Your concern about your granddaughter’s lifestyle choice is perfectly understandable.

Dear Abby: I am writing about the letter from “Holding My Tongue” (Nov. 8), the woman who was upset because many children were playing with electronic devices during her grandchildren’s school concerts and recitals. While I agree that most children should pay attention to the event at hand, as the mother of two children on the autism spectrum, I have a different perspective.

There are apps and games designed to keep these children occupied and help them deal with the stress and anxiety of being in a large group of people. I should not have to leave my sons at home because they are on the spectrum, so a harmless, quiet game that allows them to participate without being disruptive is a godsend to me.

When you look at all 52 cards of some bridge deals, it is not clear how either the bidding or the play will go. This layout arose during a social game with strong players. What was the outcome in six clubs after West led the heart king?

The auction was involved.

North’s negative double showed his four-card spade suit. Then, when South indicated extra values by jumping to three no-trump, North bid his long diamond suit. South control-bid (cue-bid) four hearts to suggest a slam. West’s double was futile.

And, finally, South chose six clubs.

Both six clubs and six diamonds can be made, but each requires double-dummy play.

(Declarer must know where all of the cards lie.)

The expert in six clubs adopted a sensible line. After winning with his heart ace, South ran his diamond queen to East’s king.

East, thinking his partner would have led a singleton if he had one, returned a heart.

But declarer ruffed in the dummy, cashed the club king, crossed to the spade king, and drew trumps, squeezing East in spades and diamonds (not that it mattered, because South could have established dummy’s diamond suit).

East should have returned a diamond. If South had had a singleton queen, he was unlikely to have rebid three no-trump. Also, even if he had, the diamond lead probably would not have cost. West would have needed a trump trick to defeat the contract, which was not likely to evaporate.

To move or not to move – the house?

DEAR MONTY Richard Montgomery Dear Monty: We own a oneacre lot on a street with mostly half-acre lots. We are considering splitting the lot into two half-acre lots. The only problem is the house is in the middle. It would cost about $75,000 to move the house to one side.

Would it make sense to divide the lot? – Elizabeth P. Monty: Hello Elizabeth, and thanks for your question. The initial reaction is that it is not a good idea.

However, there may be local knowledge driving the consideration for this project that cannot be assimilated from a distance.

Here is an edited excerpt: Dear Scott: My house is going on the market, and I need to de-clutter big time. It’s just so overwhelming.

What’s considered clutter? I don’t have anything personal up, but my closets have clothing that doesn’t fit in drawers. If I hide things in other closets, prospective buyers will just open them anyway and see it. I want to be able to show there’s more storage space than there clearly is. How do I accomplish this?

Why was the subdivision platted in the current fashion? What percentage of the lots is one acre? Most often in subdivisions the lots are a similar size, so by discovering why it was platted in this fashion originally, you may come to the same conclusion as the original developer. As an example, if the original plat was to avoid some natural barrier such as near-surface bedrock or an underground slew, it may be a reason to abandon the idea. A quick title search for deed restrictions or covenants may reveal restrictions included to prevent such a change.

• Consider all the costs. While the belief is it will cost $75,000 to move the house a very short distance, how do you know? While it is an indicator, one estimate from a local house mover does not mean it will cost $75,000. With an expense of this magnitude for a fairly uncommon occurrence, it pays to seek estimates from other house-moving companies. Different companies may have different methods and tactics for a job such as this, and the cost gap between bidders could be significant.

What does the $75,000 include?

Here are some other costs that may or may not have been included in your estimate. The cost to survey the lot

family in the neighborhood looking for new friends. They may believe it is easier to make new friends in a new subdivision than an established neighborhood.

• Factors not easy to see. An item that may influence thinking about the project is if renovation work is being considered. For example, if a new kitchen or adding a lower-level living space is the thought that sparked the idea, this may be a good time to coordinate the efforts. Exterior siding or new windows are other examples of a significant re-model.

One last caveat is the makeup of the neighborhood. Will a brand-new home fit in with the neighborhood on the newly created lot? If the homes on the block are turn-of-the-century behemoths, the new structure may not fit well. Architectural design and construction methods (and materials) have changed in the past 100 years. It is possible to reduce the market appeal of a home if it is inconsistent with the supporting cast, and in some instances, upset the neighbors.

and gain the approval of the municipality; house your family during the physical move; store and then move your furniture next door (house movers will not move a house with belongings inside); install sewer, water and utilities next door; disconnect the old utilities to meet code; demolition and removal of the old foundation; build the new foundation; new landscaping; and secure temporary housing while moving your home.

• Know the value. Most importantly, know what the new vacant lot will be worth on the market, and what it will cost to sell. Larger cities with highly valued infill lots and many conveniences can be a competing choice over outlying communities with long drive times and fewer services. A local real estate agent with experience in new construction could be an excellent resource for market information and experience.

This is a situation where multiple opinions will be fruitful.

What if it costs $50,000 to move the house next door and $25,000 for all the items listed above. If the move creates a lot worth $150,000, will it be enough money gained for the time and inconvenience invested? If $75,000 is the true cost to move the home and the newly created lot is worth $50,000, it will be a costly decision. Some homebuyers will shy away from an infill lot because the competing new subdivisions have every

Closets are a great place to begin. I always stage a home with nothing on the floors of a closet and minimal items on the shelves, with one-anda-half inches between each hanger. You want them to seem spacious. Home buyers won’t open your dresser drawers, but they will open kitchen and bathroom drawers and look under sinks. So don’t forget these areas when you’re packing stuff up to stage your home.

Dear Scott: I have an old upright piano that I can hardly even push. I’ve offered it on Craigslist for free, but no takers. Any other thoughts?

Roewer: You might try Piano Finders (www.pianofinders. com) as a starting place, or list your piano on Piano Adoption (pianoadoption.com). There are many churches and schools that could use another piano in a music practice room. You might try a needy organization as well.

Dear Scott: I’m very forgetful, and if I put something away I’ll completely forget about it. Do you have any tips that would allow me to keep things (mostly paperwork) in front of

me without looking messy?

Roewer: Sounds like you’re very visual, much like myself.

I use a system of clear folders and organize them in a stairstep file folder holder.

Keep in mind that everything out means it all has the same importance. Keep out what you need most often, or your current projects. Develop a retrieval system for your other documents. Notice I didn’t say storage. When we put things “away,” we’re setting them up for their next use, not simply storing them. If you develop the system, trust the system and use the system. With only the papers you need, it will work. Having a professional organizer work with you might help as well.

Dear Scott: Do you know of any group that will take window treatments (in very good condition)? We have a three-part set of draperies for a big, bay-style window. It’s all tacked onto a board that I’m replacing. Habitat for Humanity has already turned it down, and I’m getting tired of seeing it sitting on my dining room floor.

Roewer: Most places like AmVets, Goodwill, etc., will accept drapes. If they don’t sell within three weeks at Goodwill, they’re sold by the pound for salvage. So if you don’t want that to happen, you might try Freecycle (www.freecycle.org).

Dear Scott: My son has a ton

of toys, some of which are in our living room. I’d like to get some sort of bookcase-style piece of furniture that can hold baskets and still look like grown-up furniture. Is there a name for this? I’m not sure what to search for or where to look. If it helps, I like traditional, antique furniture (nothing modern, no Ikea).

Roewer: Kids’ toys easily take over a room, so I feel your pain! Bookcases are often too shallow for a basket, or some of the larger plastic toys. You might be looking for a sideboard or credenza, both of which are deeper than a bookcase. Toys in baskets “disappear.” If you use this method, consider pictures on the sides of the baskets to show what toys are inside. Also be sure to teach him to put toys away when he is finished playing with them before he

gets another basket. Baskets can be big and heavy for kids, so bigger and deeper is not better when it comes to toys.

Dear Scott: Have you ever dealt with anyone who had old stamp collections?

Roewer: You might try the Swedish Tiger (www.theswedishtiger.com) for a resource to help you with this collection.

Dear Scott: Are there any organizing books in particular that you would recommend?

Roewer: I love organizing books and have a great collection myself. Books are usually a presentation of one method or idea. So, you’ll need to find something that speaks your language. Check out my friend Erin Doland’s book “UnClutter Your Life in One Week.”

Dear Scott: I am a woman who wears knee-high boots almost every day. I have at least three pairs I use each week. How do I store them? A shoe rack would be way too small. And just lining them up against the wall of my closet on the floor leads to them bending and falling over.

Roewer: What you need are boot forms (to start with) that keep the boots from folding over. This also allows your boots to last longer because the leather is not getting creased. “An office is usually the last place they want to spend money on,” she says. But Liess says that home offices – or desktop spaces in kitchens or bedroom niches – offer great opportunities to accessorize well and add personality.

We turned to Liess, as well as Darlene Molnar, a Washington interior designer and adjunct professor at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, to help us find timeless case goods and the latest, greatest accessories.

Interior Design: Beware of accent walls THE WASHINGTON POST

put on my walls. They’ve been painted, but there is no art hanging up. I will do a couple of wedding photos, and I have one or two unique art pieces, but not enough to fill a home. I’m not a fan of mass-produced artwork. I want my pieces to have a story. However, I don’t have the funds available to buy one-of-a-kind pieces. Where could I look?

Roberson: If the pieces you

Interior designer Michael Roberson was the guest last week on The Post’s Home Front online chat. Here is an edited excerpt:

Q: I’ve grown tired of my white, beige and tan furniture. I don’t want to purchase new furniture or reupholster because of the costs, but thought I could add color to the walls. What paint colors would you suggest?

Michael Roberson: Painting the walls is an option, but given your pale palette I would use a soft color that flatters you on the walls, then use a more intense color on pillows and accessories.

Q: I want to paint my bedroom a Benjamin Moore gray with an accent wall in yellow. The room has a large window and gets morning and afternoon light. The room is currently painted yellow. Should I stay with yellow or go with gray?

What color gray and what color yellow for the accent wall should I use?

Roberson: Unless the archi-

tecture is very modern or the wall has a very clear separation, I’m leery of accent walls.

Instead, why not use gray on the bedding or a painted piece of furniture? To find a gray that complements your yellow, take a sample of the yellow with you to the paint store. Then use that sample to select fabrics.

Q: I’m planning to redo the upstairs bathroom in my house. The room is tiny and will remain that way. I’d love advice on flooring options that will stand the test of time. Tile?

When selecting paint colors for interior walls it helps to bring a swatch of the other colors or patterns represented in the room, so that everything ties together. best option in a bath. There are lots of options available to you.

In a small bath I would suggest using either a small-scale onesquare-inch tile or a 12-squareinch stone tile. One creates a pattern and the other could expand the sense of space. I wouldn’t use anything too bold or patterned.

Q: Can a kitchen backsplash just be painted, or should I go with tile?

Roberson: I think that’s a budget thing. Paint is affordable and could be fun. There are many options for a backsplash: tile, stone, stainless steel and some fabulous glass panel options as well as mirror.

Q: What type of blind or curtain is fashionable today? Does it depend on the style of window?

really a word I like to use when it comes to interiors. You don’t want to keep going in and out of style. You’re correct that the choice does depend on the style of window – also the function of the window covering.

Is it privacy or to filter light or decorative? Deciding that can help you find the right choice.

Q: I’m at a loss as to what to

Roberson: Definitely not

the modern version of my grandmother’s linoleum floor.

It comes in great colors and is very “green.” It’s biodegradable, made of natural materials and doesn’t off-gas anything.

Q: We have a two-bedroom apartment and have to use a guest room as an office. What do you suggest we use for a bed – a pull-out couch? A daybed? A futon?

Roberson: If you have the

room, I might opt for a daybed. Although sofabeds have improved, they will never be as comfortable long-term. A daybed with bolsters and pillows would be great for seating and sleeping.

Q: Did you always know that you wanted to be a designer, or did something happen that triggered you to want to go in that direction?

Roberson: Life is interesting.

When I was 7 years old, I won the Scholastic Art competition in Houston with a linoleum print of rabbits. That got me a scholarship to a fine-arts school. At 16, I realized I wasn’t going to be a great artist, just a good one, and changed my focus. But that art training formed the basis of my success as a designer.
