had the great privilege this week to meet Mateo – a sweet gentleman with an amazing personality.

He trotted around his Geneva home carrying a Teddy bear and sniffing my cameras.

Mateo, an Italian spinone, will be competing in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden from Feb. 15 to 16.

Owner Lindsey Stanton of Geneva said the breed is known for its soulful eyes,

and I noticed that during the first 10 minutes of our meeting.

alagattolla@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A man suspected of robbing a photo booth at Funway in Batavia neglected to consider one important detail – the potential of leaving behind photographic evidence.

Batavia police are seeking information about the man, who was indeed photographed by the machine while he was prying open the cash drawer, police said. Batavia Detective Kevin Bretz said those who have information about the incident should call 630-454-2500. Bretz said people can call in anonymously.

“If you break into a photo booth, it’s going to take a picture of you,” Bretz said, adding, “Obviously, he didn’t think that far ahead. … He decided he was just going to keep doing what he was doing, despite the fact that it was a photo

Bretz said the man entered the booth and pried open the cash drawer and took about $75 in cash and caused about $75 in damage. In a Facebook post on the “BPD Special Updates” page, police stated that the machine is designed to take photo-

graphs when it senses tampering to the cash drawer. The incident took place on Nov. 25, but the Facebook post stated “the report was delayed until the owner could get a repairman to pull the offender’s image from the machine.”

Bretz said the machine is among the

attractions at Funway, a facility that includes an arcade, a bowling alley, miniature golf courses and more. Bretz said Funway workers were checking their machines at the end of the night on Nov. 25 and found damage to the photo booth.

“They are there for the entertainment of everybody,” Bretz said of the booth and the other attractions. “This individual decided he was going to take money out of this particular machine.”

Bretz said it is rare that any such incident would happen at Funway, which he called “a very fun, amusement environment. They are not prone to any big problems at all,” Bretz said. “Funway is a safe environment.”

As of Thursday afternoon, Bretz said police had not received calls about the incident, but he said “it’s still early.

We’re confident that we’ll get some calls here. Or he could turn himself in.”

Four teens face numerous additional charges in Campton Hills burglaries

asloboda@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – The three teens accused of causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage to St. Charles Park District facilities now collectively face 35 charges stemming from multiple burglaries in Campton Hills, the Campton Hills Police Department announced Thursday in a release.

A fourth teen, Jacob Principato, also faces charges from the Campton Hills incidents, which happened last year between October and December and affected Wasco Elementary School and Wasco Nursery and Garden Center, as well as multiple concessions stands in several parks, police reported.

“Though items were stolen in most of the burglaries, the suspects primarily caused damage to the properties they broke into,” the release states. “Multiple items, stolen from the various locations, were recovered from some of the suspect’s [sic] homes and other locations where the items were thrown or hidden.”

The release indicated the crimes went unsolved until William Donlevy, Kyle Wandle and Nicholas Zamecnik were charged in the late December burglaries to James O. Breen Community Park and Otter Cove Aquatic Park in St. Charles. Video surveillance reportedly captured their actions.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Mateo, a 3-year-old Spinone Italiano dog, has his own room and shelves of trophies – including one for being the No. 1 Spinone 2015.

His owners, Lindsay and Roger Stanton of Geneva, will be driving Mateo to New York City soon to compete in the 140th annual Westminster Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show, which takes place from Feb. 15 to 16.

The 80-pound shaggy dog with soulful eyes, whose breed name is pronounced spi-NO-nay, was bred as a hunting dog but is also a good dog for a family, Lindsay Stanton said.

“They are such a unique breed,” Lindsay Stanton said. “They are known as the clown of the sporting world. They have a goofy side to them.

They are active outside but definitely more of a couch potato inside. In the house, they are very relaxed and not as high-energy as other sporting breeds.

We did not want a high-energy dog in the house.”

Lindsay Stanton had another Spinone, Dante, that died more than three years ago at age 12. Although she showed Dante for about a year, he didn’t really care for it the way Mateo does, she said.

At 6 months old, Mateo was in a national American Kennel Club competition – the one time each year everyone in a particular breed gets together from all across the country, Lindsay Stanton said.

“I entered him for the heck of it, and he won in his class every day,” Lindsay Stanton said. “And he just loved it. He thought everybody was clapping and cheering for him.”

When Mateo finished No. 1 for 2015, he was almost 100 points ahead of the dog that finished second in his breed, Lindsay Stanton said.

At home, Mateo has a sweet, playful temperament. He is so popular that neighborhood children will come and ask if Mateo can come out and play, Lindsay Stanton said.

Judging at the dog shows is not only based on the dog meeting all the structural standards for a particular breed,

“There is a deep connection when you look into their eyes,” Lindsay Stanton said.

Former Elburn resident Diana Cannon, whose kennel, Darby Canyon Spinone, bred Mateo, agrees with that dog-human connection.

“They are very special,” Cannon said of Spinoni. “It’s the type of dog that will look into your soul. I have done dog therapy work for years, and so many of my puppies do therapy work. They really connect with their human beings.”

Mateo is the half-brother of another winner, Spumante, which was the No. 1 Spinone for 2012. Cannon said she will also attend the Westminster show as three of her dogs, including Mateo, will be showing there.

“I have been breeding Spinones for 14 years, and out of the six from my first litter, five are still alive,” Cannon said. “I’m proud of my breed.”

BATAVIA – Although he never met Margaret Hillis – a former music director for the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the first woman to lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a subscription concert – Dave Bearden nominated her for the Fox Guy Bellaver Valley Arts Hall of Fame.

She had what Bearden called “a full, full wow life,” the Elgin Symphony Orchestra CEO said.

“You don’t want the Phillip Burn importance of that to fade away,” he said.

It shouldn’t. Hillis is among six people, including St. Charles sculptor Guy Bellaver, selected for the hall of fame’s newest class of Joseph inductees.

Their names were Hernandez announced at an event Thursday at the Batavia Public Library.

“This is an exciting day,” Susan S. Starrett, one of the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame founders, said before Margaret her daughter described Hillis each of the inductees.

BATAVIA – Stephanie Rische thought she had enough crazy, hilarious dating stories to fill a book.

So, she did.

The Batavia resident, 38, chronicled her misadventures in dating in a memoir titled “I Was Blind (Dating), But Now I See,” which recently was released by Tyndale Momentum.

While in her 20s, Rische found herself single and yearning for love as she watched friend after friend get married, wondering, “When is it going to be my turn?” she said.

“I ended up going on eight blind dates, and all of them were varying levels of awkward and mortifying,” Rische Stephanie said. “Each section of the Rische book, I talk about a blind date and how it went awry, but … the surprise of getting to the end of all those blind dates was that I was learning more about myself. Not just finding the right guy, but becoming the person I wanted to be.”

With apt names for each gentleman, such as Limo Dude and Blond Date, Rische uses humor to share the intrigue of all eight experiences. But she also wrote with a deeper purpose.

“I wrote the book to let other people who are in that spot – not sure how their life will unfold – let them see my flops ... and let them know your life can turn out better than you expected,” she said.

“I [can] see how God was so faithful to me when I felt I was out on my own … it didn’t make sense at the time, but – looking back – I can see how it all works out.”

Rische, an editor at Tyndale Momentum, said there aren’t many dating advice books for young adults. But while

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A St. Charles Township man faces up to 10 years in prison after a jury on Wednesday convicted him of possessing a handgun and pointing it at a police officer, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Erik J. Esparza, 20, was convicted of felony possession of a firearm by a street gang member, felony aggravated use of a weapon and misdemeanor aggravated assault.

According to the release, two Au-

rora police officers were inside an unmarked police car about 7:20 p.m. July 11, 2015, while working undercover near Parker Avenue and Pearl Street on the city’s near side side.

They saw Esparza and a companion – both street gang members – acting suspiciously, the Erik Esparza release states.

As the undercover vehicle approached the individuals to investigate, Esparza raised a semiautomatic handgun and pointed it directly at one of the officers, according to the release.

The officer, who feared for his life, fired two shots at Esparza, the release states, noting nobody was struck. Although Esparza and his companion fled, the companion was captured near the scene, and police found Esparza lying in weeds between two garages about 90 minutes later, according to the release.

Esparza is expected in court March 18 for motions and sentencing. He faces between three and 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, the release states.

He remains in custody at the Kane County jail. Bond was revoked upon conviction.

NORTH AURORA – North Aurora police will conduct special patrols this Super Bowl weekend to crack down on drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs, the department announced in a press release.

“If you plan on drinking alcohol while cheering your team on to victory, pass your keys to a sober, designated driver before the Super Bowl party begins,” Chief David Summer stated in the release. “Follow the rules, or law enforcement will penalize you with a DUI.” The release cited data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about crash fatalities. In 2014, the release states, 9,967 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes nationwide, which represented 31 percent of all vehicle crash fatalities.

The top six G-SIBs in the United States held $9.7 trillion in assets last year, up from $7.2 trillion in 2006, according to Bloomberg News. That’s 63 percent of all bank assets.

And so it’s natural to hear, on the campaign trail and elsewhere, that they are still “too big to fail,” i.e., so gigantic that market participants, believing the government ultimately stands behind them, fund the institutions more cheaply than the risks on their books warrant.

Worse, the argument goes, this is a self-fulfilling prophecy; despite Dodd-Frank’s regulations, a bailout would indeed be necessary in a crisis. The only solution is to break them up, says Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, among others.

The problem with this view is that it is oversimplified.

First, some banks – JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo – got bigger partly because they absorbed failing competitors during the crisis, at Washington’s urging. Three of the top six, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, are somewhat smaller than they used to be. Second, there has been real change under DoddFrank; under heavy pressure from the Federal Reserve and other regulators, all of the big six are far better capitalized –

that is, able to cope with a crisis using their own resources – than they were before Dodd-Frank.

In fact, the top banks face a stiff additional capital demand from the Federal Reserve in 2017 that’s already forcing the biggest firm, JPMorgan Chase, to plan further shrinkage. Last year’s Federal Reserve “stress test” found that the top 31 banks, not just the biggest half-dozen, could withstand a global recession akin to the 2008 one without a federal bailout.

Last month, Standard & Poor’s, the credit rating agency, downgraded the bonds of the eight biggest banks, raising their cost of borrowing to reflect S&P’s view that their access to “extraordinary support” from government is “uncertain.” In other words, they are no longer too big to fail.

Obviously, S&P’s opinion isn’t definitive, because even with our recent experience of a global panic, no one can anticipate the psychological atmosphere of the next big crisis, which might indeed prompt the government to save a failing bank. Nevertheless, speaking about the banks as though nothing has changed is not only wrong, but may also distract from a more relevant issue: The post-Dodd-Frank crackdown on banks has caused riskier activity to “migrate” into the unregulated “shadow” sector consisting of hedge funds, private equity and the like. At the moment, such firms are financing a minor renaissance in “no-doc” mortgages, according to the Wall Street Journal. Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s financial reform plan focuses on that, whereas Sanders mainly cries “break ‘em up.” Clinton’s approach is better targeted, if not more crowd-pleasing.

To the Editor: In his second annual State of the State address, Gov. Bruce Rauner sought to remind us all that Illinois is a great state and reinforce the importance of restoring financial stability through real, structural reforms.

In the midst of political turmoil, we often forget all of our state’s great assets.

However, recognizing Illinois’ many wonderful attributes serves to underscore what we are fighting to preserve. As the governor emphasized, Illinois has some of the hardest working people in the nation.

We are a leader in agriculture and the transportation hub of America. Illinois was once considered the manufacturing center of the country and a leader in infrastructure development.

These are positive attributes worth fighting for.

Unfortunately, years of fiscal mismanagement and inefficiencies threaten these assets. We now face billions of dollars in debt, a broken pension system, stagnant unemployment rates, a failing public education system, and

technology and transportation infrastructure that are behind the times.

Gov. Rauner outlined an agenda founded in abandoning the status-quo and embracing structural reforms to the pension system, public education, procurement code, health and human services, criminal justice, information technology and economic development.

All of these are initiatives that will help put Illinois back on the road to fiscal recovery.

Gov. Rauner touched on an issue close to my heart: education reform. I plan to work closely with the governor and my colleagues this spring to reform the state-aid formula in a way that is equitable for all schools statewide, without further burdening Illinois’ property-taxpayers.

Additionally, I echo the governor’s sentiments that we need to restore public trust in government. Term limits

and redistricting reform are two issues that have garnered great public support. I hope we are able to work together to advance these fundamental changes that would go a long way toward reestablishing the publics faith in state government.

While we all are certainly not going to agree on the best way to transform our state, I believe there is a lot of common ground. Republicans and Democrats alike share the same passion to improve the lives of all Illinoisans. I agree with the governor that we must find a balance and bring all ideas to the table for consideration. It’s only by working together that we will achieve the changes necessary to make our state the economic leader it once was and that it can be again.

Cadets poised to make deep run in postseason

editorial@kcchronicle.com Social media and smartphones are so omnipresent it’s hard to believe a wrestler wouldn’t know their record or ranking.

Rankings on Illinoismatmen.com are frequently updated. As are the InterMat. com national rankings. Yet, two of the three Division I recruits on the Marmion wrestling team weren’t sure of their records when asked.

Maybe it speaks to the focus of wrestlers in a program that has crowned 14 individual state champions in its history.

Perhaps it’s a team determined to meet the goal coach Donny Reynolds set when he took the reigns of the Cadets’ program four years ago: a berth at the team duals state meet.

A quest that gets underway Saturday at the IHSA Class 3A Naperville North Regional.

“Social media is something that’s a constant these days,” Reynolds said. “The information is updated weekly and people pay attention to it. Fifteen or 20 years ago maybe it would be possible to sneak up on someone because your local newspaper was the only information source.

“Today, you have to go out and put it

all on the line. Four years ago, we wanted to use a different mindset. We wanted to be the first class to get the whole team through to state and all 42 guys in the mat room have bought in.”

With three nationally ranked wrestlers, a team ranked No. 19 on the InterMat.com Fab 50 and the Class 3A defending 182-pound state champion, Nathan Traxler, the competition in the Marmion mat room has been fierce.

The Cadets (24-5) have wrestled a rugged schedule that featured a trip to Minnesota for the Rochester Clash XIV, a tournament loaded with nationally ranked teams where Oak Park, ranked No. 8 on Intermat.com, finished in third place.

With duals against nationally ranked Mt. Carmel, which checks in at No. 14, No. 15 Carl Sandburg and No. 22 Washington, Reynolds said the Cadets are a “battle tested team.”

But they won’t sneak up on anyone.

Which is why Traxler (36-2), ranked No. 1 on Illinoismatmen.com, said he worked to improve from the top position this winter. If he can turn a wrestler and gain a leverage advantage he said it can “really change a match.”

“I want to keep attacking,” said Traxler, a Stanford recruit who is ranked No.

7 nationally. “I want to score and then score again because I know guys are coming after me. I have to know that I’ve worked harder and am ready. I tell myself before the match that I am going to be the one to get my hand raised, that helps ease any pressure.”

Senior Air Force Recruit A.J. Jaffe wants to be the one to apply the pressure in matches. But he has avoided the attention the program has received by staying focused on a refined move set.

This winter he wanted to improve his ability to work both sides of his opponent’s body. Jaffe (32-5) is ranked No. 3 on illinoismatmen.com at 138 pounds and worked on a single-leg take down to both legs and his high crotch move.

“I don’t get involved with the rankings mubo-jumbo,” Jaffe said. “We’ve done a good job of using tunnel vision this season. This is the best month of the year.

My goals are a regional, sectional, state and team title.

“On the mat, I want to outwork my opponents, drag opponents out to the deep end where my conditioning will pay off.”

If everyone in the Cadets’ potent lineup can put their opponents in Jaffe’s metaphorical deep end, the Marmion program might make its deepest playoff run as a team.

Cadets primed for CCL tourney, postseason

ccasey@shawmedia.com AURORA – For the first time in a number of years, or since coach Joe Currie can remember, the Marmion boys basketball team will get to play a conference tournament before the official postseason gets underway.

The Cadets became part of the Chicago Catholic League’s South Division this season, after being members of the Suburban Christian Conference and even back to the late 2000s, the Suburban Catholic Conference.

But during its time there, Marmion never had the opportunity to play in a conference tournament.

“I think we’re definitely looking forward to it,” senior forward Matt Fletcher said. “It’s a great opportunity to play these great teams that we’ve been playing all year. We’ve competed against a lot of them, too, and even though the results don’t necessarily say that, we feel that we’re close enough to where we can get over that hump.”

The Cadets (9-12, 2-6 CCL South) sit in eighth place in the division – out of 10 teams – but as Fletcher mentioned, most of the losses have all been within reason. Of those six conference losses, Marmion has lost by single digits in three of those contests and had short mental lapses that pushed two more out of reach.

One loss, at the hands of De La Salle, came on a game-winning shot just before the buzzer.

But all along, Currie has seen and knows what his team is capable of, but it’s been a matter of going out on the floor and executing it.

“We’ve been right there,” Currie said. “It’ll be within a possession or two and we’ll have a few turnovers, and in the blink of an eye it’s a 10-point game, you know. But the kids have battled all season. These are some very good teams we have played, and they never give up or put their heads down, no matter what the score is.”

Those good teams that Currie spoke of include division-leading Fenwick (8-0 CCL South) which, after being level with the Cadets late in the first quarter, took off and handed Marmion its worst loss of the season, 90-52.

But the Cadets love the competition. Ask starting point guard and Batavia native Jon Young. After developing into the team’s point guard over the past season or so, he’s come into his own at the position and likes taking on the best that the CCL has to offer.

“Even though we’re not getting the results we want every game, we like playing these teams, and we like the way we’re competing with them,” Young said. “We think playing these

The physical nature of the wrestling season wore out the Rockets. But a late-season rally that included a dual win against Geneva and a loss to Addison Trail based on the eighth criteria provided a spark.

“A couple weeks back it seemed like the mental and physical grind had taken its toll,” Govea said. “Last week, though, we looked like a different team. We were battling and winning positions, which allowed us to win some close matches.”

A pair of seniors, 145-pounder Adam Mengel (27-7) and 152-pounder Ray Rushing (22-7) have made the most of their final run up to the state series. Mengel finished first at the Ed Ewoldt Wrestling Invitational at Wheaton Warrenville South on Dec. 30. Mengel has placed at every tournament this season with a third and two fourth-place finishes.

“We’ve got to stay confident,” Govea said. “We’ve preached to have a plan, to believe in the plan and to wrestle with confidence.”

Bulldogs’ high expectations

Only eight Kaneland wrestlers competed in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Tournament on Jan. 23 at DeKalb.

But Knights coach Joe Orosco was encouraged by the showing. Seven of the eight Kaneland wrestlers placed at the conference meet. With a light week of practice, Orosco said the Knights are an injury-free team that will confidently enter the IHSA Class 2A Rochelle Regional.

“We want to get as many guys get to sectionals as possible,” Orosco said. “So, this week we took the most of a chance to maintain our weights, eat healthy and fine tune the techniques we’ve been practicing all year.”

The calm before the storm of the state series featured a week off from meets and tournaments for wrestling teams.

This week, time spent in mat room and weight room has been truncated. Batavia coach Scott Bayer wants the Bulldogs to stay healthy or get healthy while maintaining their competitive edge. After winning the Upstate Eight Conference Tournament two weeks ago, Batavia has cut mat room time to an hour of practice, where the focus is for wrestlers to improve upon their go-to positions.

“We expect everyone to get to the medal round,” said Bayer about the Bulldogs’ team goal at the IHSA Class 3A Naperville North Regional. “We’ve dialed it back at practice. We have short, in-

Currie and the Cadets know that they need to come ready to play each and every night in their first year in the conference because games like Fenwick could happen against any team.

Staying in those games often requires a strong balance of outside shooting as well as a good inside presence, which the Cadets feel they have.

Sophomore Mick Sullivan stands at 6-foot-8, and Currie said he continues to see improvement with each time the big man hits the floor. As for the outside game, Marmion knows not to look any further than sharpshooter Hunter Weber.

While Fletcher and company can also knock down shots from the outside, the senior Weber is closing in on both the single-season and all-time school record for 3-point field goals made. Although Currie did not want that number mentioned to Weber, it’s very likely that it will be reached by the end of the season, if not tonight against Loyola Academy.

If your trash cannot be recycled or composted, it ends up in a landfill. A landfill is a carefully designed structure built into or on top of the ground that separates the trash from the area around it. The purpose of the landfill is to bury trash and not break it down. reusable material. Items that can be recycled include cardboard; paper; food boxes; mail; beverage cans; food cans; glass and plastic jars; jugs; plastic bottles and caps; and glass bottles. The benefits of recycling include conserving natural resources, saving energy, preventing pollution and sustaining the environment for future generations.

Composting is nature’s process of recycling decomposed organic materials such as leaves and vegetable scraps into a rich soil known as compost. This process can take up to months but after the compost, which is rich in nutrients, can be used for landscaping, horticulture and agriculture.

When you have trash, consider where it is going and how long it will be there.

February presents many options for the columnist seeking a theme. Politics and groundhogs are already passe – or at least not very tasty. Celebrating Washington and Lincoln can be left to the mattress sale fliers and the elementary schools. So, no surprise, here’s the traditional Valentine reflection.

First, let’s go back to those simpler days when a valentine was just a fluffy greeting card. For me, that would be back in the days at Shelby School, thinking about fourth or fifth grade.

District 303 spared no expense in those days, so we had an unlimited supply of red construction paper and recycled paper-lace placemats, plus some bluntpoint scissors and the Elmer’s glue that was always on the school supply list for some undisclosed reason.

The names of prospective recipients in those days were the solid, U.S.A. mainstream names. We were, after all, the offspring of a nation named Irma, Mildred, Lillian, Florence, Leroy, Oscar, Harold and Earl.

So, not to be accused of having one

These last two were high on the science scale – Darwin for his exotic namesake and encyclopedic mindset, and Steve for taking colored chalk to draw out on the blackboard the process of nuclear fission.

Even then the rumblings of romance to come could be seen in the devilish smile from Johnny and the sideways wink of Bob and his buddies. There was no doubt that the guy who not only looked around but also took action was the legendary Ernie. It could be said that Ernie was outside the mainstream development-wise, with awkward social

skills but fully accepted as a classmate and friend. Plus, Ernie had a big bankroll ready to spend on his special girls at Mrs. Guth’s Store. I was the recipient of some fabulous penny candy and the stroke of affection that was included. A real valentine. I would love the chance to trade Ernie stories and see any valentines saved from that era. Things were actually pretty grim, right girls?

The teacher was humorless; the gym teacher made us play some weird kickball game (no, not soccer); our Girl Scout leader took us into the woods and told voodoo stories. Our piano teacher (several of us) had no expectations of glory but did, on a note-by-note basis, expect more – and wrapped knuckles with a pencil to so indicate. The postwar era was fading fast into the Cold War, led by nuclear powers. The Cubs had faded fast after the World Series.

The music in the background is a well-worn tape of Herb Weichel playing oldies on the piano at the Walnut Room. He is just finishing “I’ll Get By,” and the familiar, always requested, “My Funny Valentine” is about to begin.

Lights have been dimmed, candles lit. Mister Z has carryout from Corfu (don’t forget the anchovies on the Greek salad!). The cats have been swept off the table. The dog waits patiently for the chicken off the bone. Oh – excuse me a minute.

The Marmion-Rosary Jazz Combo received a Class A second-place trophy and a first division rating with a score of 139 points at the North Shore Jazz Festival, states a news release.

The festival took place at Glenbrook South High School in Glenview on Jan. 23. The Marmion-Rosary Jazz Ensemble came in fourth place in the Class A competition.

Jazz bands from 34 senior high schools and 13 junior high schools competed in the 39th annual event, the release states.

Members of the jazz combo are Lukas McDonald of Batavia, Edison Hurh of St. Charles, Keith Mokry of Somonauk, Ben Rydecki of Somonauk, Ryan Thornton of St. Charles, Phillip Grant Swanson of Batavia, Matt Lagman of Oswego, Harrison Kearby of Aurora and Sam Kluber of Batavia.

Not all DCIS breast cancers require aggressive treatment Dear Dr. K: I have been

diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ. My doctor wants me to have surgery.

But recently I read about a study that said not all women with this type of breast cancer even need to be treated. Can you help clear this up?

Dear Reader: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a type of breast cancer.

In DCIS, the cancerous cells are contained within the breast’s ducts (which carry milk to the nipple) but have not invaded surrounding tissue.

The standard treatment for DCIS is surgery. This might mean a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast and usually some nearby lymph nodes. Or it might be a lumpectomy, which removes only the cancerous tumor and a small amount of healthy tissue around it. Surgery might be followed with radiation therapy, designed to kill any possible remaining cancer cells in that breast.

But a recent study suggests standard treatment might be too aggressive.

The researchers studied more than 108,000 women with DCIS. The main finding of the study was the chance of premature death in women of all ages who had DCIS was no greater than in women without DCIS. However, the chance of death from breast cancer was higher in women younger than 35 and in African-American women who had DCIS. Some media coverage of this study left the impression DCIS doesn’t need to be treated. In fact, all patients in the study received some form of treatment.

What the study does say is none of the treatments differed very much from one another with respect to ultimate survival.

Here is the dilemma: DCIS constitutes about 20 to 25 percent of all breast cancers that are found by

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff screening tests (usually mammograms). Under the microscope, the cancerous cells of DCIS have a similar appearance to the cells of breast cancers that are invading the breast.

Even though DCIS is not invading the breast, it looks as if it might do so in the future.

About 50,000 to 60,000 DCIS lesions are removed each year in the United States. Yet the number of cases of invasive breast cancer has not gone down.

That seems to mean in most women who have the DCIS surgically removed, it never would have invaded the breast or spread.

But in a few, it would have.

The problem is, we haven’t yet figured out a way to identify the relatively few DCIS tumors that will invade and spread from the larger number that won’t.

You and your doctor are going to have to consider your individual risk factors. If your doctor thinks not having surgery, just closely monitoring the DCIS, is an option, you would need to decide if you are comfortable with that plan.

Some men face a similar dilemma. Some prostate cancers never spread.

There are pretty good, but not perfect, ways of identifying those “indolent” cancers. Often, men and their doctors choose not to remove these cancers, but just to monitor them.

Fortunately, the majority of women with DCIS have an excellent prognosis. Their cancer does not spread.

Mother seeks tips on raising teens Dr. Wallace: I have a 13-yearold daughter and a son who will enter the teen years in two months. I have been both father and mother to them ever since my children’s father deserted us more than seven years ago. He went to Mexico to visit his mother and never returned. His brother said he is now married and has three young children.

As you can see, I will receive no help from him to help me guide our children through the teen years. I must do it alone.

The teen years can be a very difficult time, so I will need all the good advice I can get to help me raise two caring, law-abiding and happy teens. Any suggestions will be deeply appreciated.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19, and the girl I was dating is 15. Her father ended our relationship because I’m Catholic and she’s Protestant. I told him I’d change my religion to hers if he would allow me to continue seeing his daughter. But he said, “No way.”

Is there any way I can get her father to change his mind?

I’m in love with his daughter, and she loves me, too. We are both suffering because of his narrow-minded decision. What can I do to rescue our romance?

– Kyle, Erie, Pennsylvania Kyle: I doubt seriously there is anything you can do to cause her father to change his mind. It’s quite possible your age is more of a hindrance than your religion. This girl actually is at an age many parents regard as too young to be dating.

I urge you to forget about her and suggest you start looking for girls 17 or older to share time with.

At the bridge table, we love majors and dislike minors up to the game-level, because in a major we have to win one fewer trick to get the game bonus.

However, when climbing up to a slam, minors are fine because we need 12 or 13 tricks whatever the strain.

When you have game values but do not find a major-suit fit, you steer toward three no-trump. Only if you are sure that contract cannot make, do you – kicking and screaming – play in five of a minor.

So, at a low level, we try to find a major-suit fit. Look at the South hand in today’s diagram. After opening one diamond and hearing partner respond one heart, South must rebid one spade, not two diamonds. If partner does not raise spades, South can show his long diamond suit on the next round. Here, of course, North raises to two spades (promising four-card support), and South jumps to four spades – when you smell a game, bid that game.

The defenders start with three rounds of clubs. After ruffing, how should declarer continue?

South must get his diamond suit established, and the heart king is a red herring. Declarer should draw two rounds of trumps, cash the diamond ace-king, ruff a diamond on the board, play a heart to his ace and lead out winning diamonds. He loses only two clubs and one trump.

The Argyle Sweater

Dear Abby: My husband passed away recently, and I have some items of his I’m unsure how to tastefully display to honor his memory. They are his Bible, a U.S. flag in a triangular display box (he was a military veteran), a set of deer antlers, works he authored, his guitar and family photos. I don’t want to build a shrine, but I don’t want to stick these things in a closet, either.

He was passionate about his pursuits, and his passion was contagious. I want to pay tribute to him without making others uncomfortable. I have a small house, so a grouping of the items takes up significant space. The way I have them set up now is kind of shrine-like, and it’s emotionally wrenching both for me and for visiting family. Suggestions, Abby?
