Campton Hills man remains in Indiana jail Patzer charged with domestic battery after Delnor Hospital incident

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Campton Hills man on Wednesday evening remained in an Indiana jail after he was charged with domestic battery following an incident last month at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, officials said.

Justin B. Patzer has been charged with felony domestic battery, domestic battery and aggravated assault in the Jan. 27 incident. After fleeing

the hospital, he was captured a few hours later in Indiana.

Patzer remains in the Lake County Jail in Indiana, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote in an email Wednesday.

She also wrote that efforts are onJustin B. Patzer going to have Patzer extradited back to Illinois.

At the time of the incident,

Patzer was visiting his father at the hospital, Nash said previously. Bruce Patzer died on Jan. 31.

At some point during the Jan. 27 incident, Patzer assaulted his brother-in-law, Nash said. According to a Geneva police report, Patzer was armed with a knife in the area of the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“As Justin entered the ICU waiting room, he immediately grabbed his brother-in-law by the neck using his left hand, pinning him against the couch and wall,” the report stated.

report through a Freedom of Information request.

The report also stated that Patzer removed a folding knife from his pocket and held it above his head.

According to the report, witnesses described Patzer as holding the knife like a dagger and yelling that he was going to kill someone.

In addition, the report stated that Patzer had become involved in an online argument with his brotherin-law on Jan. 26. It also quoted Patzer’s relatives as saying that Patzer was recently released from jail, and he was “not in a good state of mental health.”

U.S. Postal Service asks customers to clear snow The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to clear snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes.

Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside delivery should remove snow piles left by snow plows to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers.

Delivery service might be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow

is plowed against mailboxes.

Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the postal service to collect the mail for delivery.

Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

U.S. Postal Service issues news release on emails The U.S. Postal Service issued a news release stating that some postal customers are receiving bogus emails about a package delivery or online postage charges.

The emails contain a link or attachment that, when opened, installs a malicious virus that can steal personal information from a computer, the release stated.

The emails claim to be from the U.S. Postal Service and contain fraudulent information about an attempted or intercepted package delivery or online postage charges.

Those who receive the emails are instructed to click on a link, open the attachment, or print the label.

Like most viruses sent by email, clicking on the link or opening the attachment will activate a virus that can steal

OTHER USES FOR BOTOX Just about everyone is familiar with Botox, which is the trade name for “botulinum toxin A.” The substance secreted by the bacteria responsible for botulism causes paralysis and even death, but it can be useful as a muscle relaxant in its diluted form.

While Botox has become famous for its ability to unfurrow brows, it should be pointed out that the FDA approved Botox for use by ophthalmologists before it gained approval for treating facial lines.

In 1989, the FDA approved botulinum toxin A for treating strabismus (“crossed eyes”) due to its ability to relax the muscles that pull eyeballs out of their alignment. Ophthalmologists also use Botox to treat “blepharospasm,” the uncontrolled contractions of eyelid muscles that cause rapid blinking.

P.S. Patients with blepharospasm have normal eyes. Their visual disturbance is due solely to the forced closure of their eyelids.

Judges warn STC students about sexting, cyberbullying risks

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Haines Middle School eighth-graders on Wednesday learned just how fast their smartphones can ruin a lifetime of good decisions.

Kane County Judges Clint Hull and Susan Clancy Boles, who previously spoke to Thompson and Wredling middle school students in St. Charles, explained to the teens how the text messages and photos they send can become a criminal matter.

“That crime is committed in one second,” Hull said.

Misuse of devices – such as smartphones, computers and tablets – and social media sites, such as Facebook and Snapchat, have resulted in more and more criminal case filings and youth coming before the judges in their courtrooms, they said.

“It’s getting worse,” Boles said. “It’s not getting better.”

Bullying texts or social media posts can lead to criminal charges of harassment through electronic communications, they said, and the handling of revealing photographs – not necessarily nude photographs – can quickly elevate from sexting to child pornography charges.

Each person who sent the message and each person who allowed his or her phone to be used to send that message can get into trouble, Hull said.

“You can’t just sit on the sidelines to some of this behavior,” Boles said, advising students to show an administrator, teacher or parent unwanted communications immediately.

Consequences for misdemeanor charges can include jail time, fines and community service – which can interfere with after-school activities, the judges said.

“That absolutely goes away,” Boles said. “Your time is no longer your own.

Consequences for felony charges – such as distributing child pornography – can include prison time, mandatory supervision and registering as a sex offender, the judges said.

Hull told the students that a felony conviction can affect their ability to attend college, get financial aid and

get a job.

Both judges said defenses they often hear from young people or their parents – such as “my property can’t be searched” – won’t work.

And it’s no use to tell judges that “everyone does it,” they said.

“We don’t have everybody in front of us,” Boles said. “We have you.”

“Our property tax burden is one of the biggest impediments to growth, and it hurts both businesses and middle-class families,” Rauner said.

For education, Rauner called for increased funding, putting more resources directly into classrooms and investing in technical and vocational training.

In a statement, State Rep. Steve Andersson, R-Geneva, said the speech marked a new starting point for cooperation between the General Assembly and the governor’s office.

As State Rep. Keith Wheeler listened to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s State of the State address midday Wednesday, he noticed similarities between the governor’s comments and his beliefs.

“It almost seemed like he was using similar language to what I used in the campaign,” said Wheeler, R-Oswego. “If you take the perspective I ran on – creating Illinois jobs for Illinois families – I thought the governor did an impressive job of how he sees Illinois’ lack of competitiveness about being a problem for job creation.”

The jobs issue was one of many topics the first-term governor addressed in his 30-minute speech, which ended with a rally to approach the state’s bicentennial in 2018 as the great state of Illinois.

The city received the money in proceeds from the sale of six acres at the northeast corner of Wilson Street and Kirk Road. Speedway plans to build a gas station on the land, which had been deeded to the city in November 2010.

Third St., Geneva, in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and Presidents Day. The doll is the star of TV commercials, showing

it taking in Illinois sights.

The public is invited to meet Mini Abe at two scheduled visits. Mini Abe will greet attendees of the Museum’s February Brown Bag Program “Presidential Visits,” at noon Tuesday. Volunteer and presidential buff Sue Cherney will reveal stories from the Museum’s archives of presidents who have visited Geneva.

Those who attend the program can join Mini Abe afterward for a celebration of Lincoln’s 206th birthday.

Admission is $5 each, or $3 for museum members. Mini Abe also will be available for photo opportunities at the museum from 3 to 4 p.m. on Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12.

Officials in St. Charles and Geneva are urging residents to keep fire hydrants clear of snow.

In St. Charles, Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet issued a statement asking residents to clear snow away from hydrants so they are visible and accessible at all times.

“If firefighters can’t find the hydrant or have to dig it out of the snow, that’s valuable time lost in fighting a fire,” he stated in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon.

Schelstreet recommended clearing the snow around the hydrant and down to the ground to assure accessibility in an emergency. The release stated senior citizens or others who are not able to clear

by The Label Printers of Aurora, will be back for a seventh season of FIRST – For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology – Robotics Competition.

Earlier this year, nearly 75,000 high school students on 3,000 teams at 107 venues around the world joined the 2015 kickoff via live Comcast NBCUniversal broadcast, according to a news release.

The teams received a kit of motors, batteries, a control

system, a PC and a mix of automation components. With limited instructions, they will work with adult mentors over six weeks to design, build, program and test their robots for competition.

The teams compete in regional events called the Recycle Rush, a recycling-themed game played by two alliances of three robots each.

Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping them with recycling containers and disposing of pool noodles that represent litter, the release stated.

cling theme, all game pieces are reusable or recyclable by teams or by FIRST at the end of the season, officials said.

Sheriff Kramer responds to proposed $225,000 cut

In an email, Kramer wrote that it is unfounded that ongoing negotiations with the corrections officers and sergeants union factored into the decision. Negotiations began under former Sheriff Pat Perez.

Altria accepting grant applications

The Altria Companies Employee Community Fund is accepting grant applications from nonprofit organizations in Illinois.

The grant application process is open until Feb. 28.

ACECF is an employee-giving program where Illinois grant recipients are selected by employees of U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company in Franklin Park.

Employees choose the fund’s focus areas, and an employee committee selects the grant recipients from submitted proposals.

In 2015, ACECF will continue focusing on the following giving areas: domestic violence, emergency services, homelessness, hunger relief, senior services (including adults with disabilities) and youth services (including youth with disabilities).

The program must be focused on one of the above areas. ACECF grantees must be nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code that operate within the state of Illinois.

Tax-exempt status must be active at the time of application.

St. Charles Youth Commission Chair Nancy McFarland, and Dr. Dan Kelly, the commission’s secretary, handed out the grants to one family and three student groups.

The St. Charles North Honor Society received the highest award – $1,200 – for funding and support of their annual “Kohl’s for Kids” event. The honor society takes children in need to Kohl’s for new clothes, and the participants really enjoy the experience, said Erin Nemetz of the honor society at the meeting.

The St. Charles East H.O.P.E. Club received $1,000 to support its first 5K run planned for March 21.

Members of the club, whose acronym stands for Helping Others Protect Each Other, said they wanted to spread

the commission’s presentation.

The Sommers said they plan to rent an indoor facility for a couple hours to keep the program going on select holidays during the school year.

The final recipient was the St. Charles East Ping Pong Club.

Its members received a $89 Challenge Grant award for an Apple TV device to project brackets and pingpong instructional videos in “the dungeon,” which is the nickname for a lower level at St. Charles East High School.

BATAVIA – The Fermilab Family Open House event is set from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Fermilab is at Kirk Road and Pine Street, Batavia.

It will take place in Wilson Hall. It will include activities, from hands-on science exhibits to tours of some of the lab’s attractions. There will be a series of performances by Jerry Zimmerman, known as “Mr. Freeze,” demonstrating the effects of liquid nitrogen, and about a dozen scientists will be ready to answer questions in the exhibit area on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall, according to a news release.

For the first time, Fermilab’s brand-new operations center on the first floor of Wilson Hall will be accessible for the open house. Many of Fermilab’s experiments are controlled from this room, and there will be operators at their stations, ready to talk about the work they are doing.

In the atrium, families can enjoy a “physics carnival,” including interactive exhibits by

Rauner, the State of the State New Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s first State of the State address was refreshing, a different take on the real state of things in the Land of Lincoln.

Rather than talking about tax increases and new ways to spend money, Rauner’s focus mainly was on ways that government in Illinois could be efficient with the $35 billion it already spends, and how it can create an employment-friendly environment that will naturally grow revenues without asking more of taxpayers.

Rauner’s speech outlined ideas, many of which Republicans have frequently floated before but without any hope of having them go anywhere.

He talked about the burden that worker’s compensation costs place on employers in Illinois, and the need to undertake real reform to keep

businesses in Illinois and attract new ones.

Taxpayer empowerment, or the idea that local property taxpayers be allowed to take control of their local governments and how they pay their employees, was a welcome proposal, as was talk of eliminating some of the almost 7,000 units of local government that Illinoisans must pay to support.

Rauner took aim at the cozy relationship between public-employee unions and public officials. He even had the gall to suggest that state workers be paid according to their merit rather than their seniority.

He also said the state’s tax code was too narrow – not enough people are paying the taxes, presumably alluding to his plan to tax consumer services that we’ll likely hear about when he gives his budget

address on Feb. 18.

That address and the budget plan that follows it will be critical, as the public and legislators look for some specifics on how Rauner will put his plans into action and how he will follow through on a pledge to increase state spending for elementary education.

There wasn’t a lot of clapping from the Democrats, whose party members have more than a two-thirds majority in both the state House and Senate. But then, why would we expect cheers from the lawmakers who have led the state into the morass in which it is mired?

Democrats in the legislature don’t need to become cheerleaders for Rauner. But they should allow his ideas to move through the legislature, and vote on them.

‘Frozen’ is a movie worth melting for It’s the highest grossing animated film of all time. It’s a Disney hit that’s taken the world by storm (no pun intended). It’s taken the form of a sing-a-long movie, ice show and even a future Broadway production.

Don’t know what it is? Let me spell it out – or, rather, sing it out – for you.

Let it go, let it go ... the cold never bothered me anyway …

Disney’s “Frozen.” One would think that more than a year after its release, the hype would’ve died down at least a little bit. Yet, here we are, still watching the movie tirelessly and listening to the catchy soundtrack on repeat. People of all ages, from toddlers to grandparents, seem to have been caught up in the phenomenon.

I’ll admit, I’m one of them.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

When I first saw “Frozen,” I couldn’t get enough of the intriguing storyline, wonderful music and fascinating characters.

Of course, Idina Menzel, one of my favorite Broadway performers, who voiced Elsa, may have contributed to my obsession. And let’s be honest, no one sings “Let It Go” better. Not even Demi Lovato (sorry, I may be a bit biased).

The real question is, why has “Frozen” made such an impact? Why has it been so successful and far-reaching for such an extended period of time? What makes it different than other Disney movies or animated films, in general?

I think the first reason definitely lies in what the film chooses to emphasize. The movie focuses on two sisters, Anna and Elsa, who were

Part of what makes the film unique is the focus on this sisterly bond rather than a friendship or romantic relationship. The inspiring way Anna and Elsa are willing to protect each other, no matter what the cost, is not necessarily something that’s found in a lot of movies these days. I feel that nowadays, the emphasis is usually on romance rather than family; when families are portrayed, it’s done in a negative fashion. “Frozen” shows that a sibling can have just as much, if not more, impact than a boyfriend or

girlfriend, resulting in plenty of those “aw” moments that leave the viewer feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

“Frozen” also has, quite frankly, some of the best music I’ve ever heard in a movie.

Not that “Everything Is Awesome” from “The Lego Movie” isn’t a quality song, but the soundtrack from “Frozen” has something special. The styles of the songs encompass everything from bouncy and playful to serious and determined.

Not only do they serve as an important means of furthering the plot, but they’re also just plain catchy. Admit it, we’ve all either belted “Let It Go” in the shower or knocked on a door and launched into “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” I’m guilty of both of these.

But I think the most

important reason for why “Frozen” has such a success is it’s a great movie.

Everything works together perfectly, from the well-developed characters to the intriguing story to the show-stopping music. Plus, in what other movie will you find a snowman obsessed with summer or a handsome prince that doesn’t end up saving the day?

There’s a reason why this is the top-grossing animated film of all time, and why it’s been viewed again and again and again. “Frozen” is truly worth melting for, and I doubt America will be letting go of this phenomenon anytime soon.

Honey-Jam Cafe in Batavia reopens Restaurant adds new items to menu

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The new owners of Honey-Jam Cafe at 521 N. Randall Road in Batavia want their customers to start the day with a smile.

The restaurant, which is open for breakfast and lunch, reopened its doors Jan. 26 after being closed since October 2013.

Customers familiar with the restaurant should expect old favorites, as well as new items on the menu, such as a turkey burger.

“It’s just a healthier option,” said Rob Tibbals, one of the new owners of the restaurant, along with Jim Garofalo.

Honey-Jam Cafe in Batavia originally opened in August 2010. The restaurant was previously owned by The Portillo Restaurant Group, but founder Dick Portillo sold the chain last year.

Tibbals and Garofalo also own Honey-Jam Cafe restaurants in Bolingbrook and Downers Grove, as well as Luigi’s House in Aurora, which also had been part of The Portillo Restaurant Group.

They are not new to the restaurant business. They also own two The Egg and I restaurants in Chicago Heights and Tinley Park – which also serve breakfast and lunch – and Grady’s Grille in Homewood.

Tibbals said they purchased the Honey-Jam Cafe restaurants because they were familiar with the concept and wanted to expand the number of restaurants they had.

Before buying the restaurants, they had patronized the Downers Grove and Bolingbrook locations.

“It’s a good concept,” he said.

“The food was good. They are beautiful restaurants. We wanted to buy the concept and keep it Honey-Jam. We have experience running breakfast-lunch restaurants, so that helped.”

Recognizing the fact that many people have a sensitivity to gluten, the Batavia restaurant also added gluten-free waffles and pancakes to its menu, as well as multi-grain pancakes.

A smoked salmon platter also has been added, and the restaurant now offers a bigger variety of eggs Benedict.

Tibbals and Garofalo also made physical changes to the Batavia restaurant, including installing a bar top.

“They can sit right up at the bar and eat,” Tibbals said. “It puts eight more seats in the restaurant.”

The Batavia restaurant has seating for about 190 people, he said.

Business has been better than expected, Tibbals said, even when considering Sunday’s blizzard.

Former customers also are returning to the Batavia location, said general manager Dawn Brussow, who had previously worked at the restaurant when it was part of The Portillo Restaurant Group.

“We see a lot of regular faces,” Brussow said. “It’s really nice to see some of the same people coming back.”

BURGER BENDER Local restaurants deliver unique riffs on an all-American classic

I

n the budding months of a new year, dietary resolutions often leave American culinary staples like the cheeseburger by the wayside. With so many unique riffs on the burger gracing restaurant menus across Kane County, adhering to such restrictions can be a difficult task.

So, instead of kicking beef patties and carbohydrates to the curb, why not indulge in a few anti-resolutions and leave the kale chips and quinoa to the vegetarians and calorie-counters.

Man versus food No one celebrates gluttony in the form of “super-size-me” portions and eating contests quite like Americans. The Travel Channel created an entire show around the concept in “Man v. Food,” in which host Adam Richman shows off his hefty appetite while traveling across the U.S. in search of calorie-cramming contests.

To find such games afoot, locals looking to show off their stomach-stretching skills need not look further than the Kane County dining scene.

As an ode to the feeding frenzy, Tap House Grill in St. Charles entices diners to complete its King Kobe Challenge ($24.99) by adding free garb to sweeten the deal. For bragging rights, as well as the highly-coveted cotton “King of the Kobe” T-shirt, of which only one person has won in the last two months, a challenger must finish a one-and-a-half pound, triple-decker Kobe beef burger, with a half-pound of cheese and a pound of fries on the side.

“We expect everything gone on the plate, down to the last fry,” Tap House manager Melissa Monno said, adding that the challenge doesn’t have a time limit. “It’s kind of fun

when there’s more than one person who orders it; they race each other.”

In Geneva, Chelios Pub and Grill offers the appropriately-named “The Belly Buster” burger, which diners can receive free of charge if it’s ingested in 20 minutes.

The devouring of a two-pound burger, topped with lettuce, tomato, onions and cheese, and a 28-ounce soft drink could set a less-fortunate contestant back $17.95. And, of course, there’s the humiliation that comes with failure.

Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill in Elburn, named after the former St. Louis Brown’s baseball player, offers those with athletic appetites the “Giant Eddie” (funnily enough, as Gaedel was only 3-feet, 7-inches tall).

What better place to engage in a friendly food competition than a restaurant named after an athlete?

To receive a free T-shirt, “Giant Eddie” ($27.95) challengers have one hour to consume two sides of fries and two halfpound cheeseburgers – piled with pickles, lettuce, tomato and onions – sandwiched between two grilled cheese and bacon paninis.

According to pub staff, only four have finished, and about 10 have walked the Elburn Main Street walk of shame.

Corporate chef Brandon Marzolf said the “Ostrich Burger” ($13.99) uses lean ostrich meat that tastes similar to beef, but boasts cholesterol levels lower than turkey or chicken. “[Ostrich meat] is not gamy at all,” said Marzolf, who imports farm-raised ostrich meat from New Zealand.

Vikings dominate, advance Squad improves on its balance beam score, looks forward to Tuesday’s sectional

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Seated on the cushy confines of the floor exercise mat, Geneva girls gymnasts fixed their eyes and ears on one more awards ceremony at the Mack Olson gym.

Or was it one last awards ceremony? Wednesday’s Geneva Regional marked the final time the Vikings will compete at home this season, and the night ended like so many others.

Geneva comfortably earned a spot in Tuesday’s Glenbard North Sectional, its 146.425 team score topping the runner-up U-46 co-op by nearly 16 points. As with last week’s Upstate Eight Conference meet here, the Vikings ascended the podium far more than any opponent.

Wherever they go, it doesn’t get old.

“We do win a lot, but I think it really is just from our hard work,” Geneva sophomore Julia Grootens said. “So it’s not like we’re just easily winning.

We have to put in the work.

We’re still proud of ourselves when we do it. It’s not the usual.”

Classmate Claire Ginsberg scored a 38.0 to win the allaround, topping her older sister, Grace, who was runner-up with a 35.575.

Claire Ginsberg took individual titles in all four disciplines – vault (9.35), bars (9.525), beam (9.675) and floor (9.45). She added a new skill to the vault, creating a higher potential starting point value.

“We just have to keep our bodies healthy, be confident going in and keep working hard,” said Ginsberg, whose 38.1 allaround score claimed the UEC title last week.

Geneva finished first through fourth on the vault and beam, with the beam its highest aggregate team total at 37.325. Last week, Geneva scored a 36.6 on beam en route to the UEC title.

“Pretty much just focus,” she said. “We’ve been working on staying on as a team. It requires a lot of focus and just numbers (of reps).”

A solid grasp of the calendar helps, too. The Vikings, mirroring many teams, view conference as a dress rehearsal for the state series.

“The camaraderie and the strength that we have going into the postseason is really strong,” Geneva coach Kim Hostman said. “We’re still adding a couple skills, so that’s helping. We could have done a little bit better on floor just

sticking landings and stuff, but all in all, our goal today was to win and to hit big, and we did.”

Several Vikings know the drill from last season, when Claire Ginsberg earned the state all-around title and current senior co-captains Grace Ginsberg and Megan Beitzel helped Geneva place fifth among eight teams.

Geneva sensed a chance to climb the team standings given Claire Ginsberg’s development and the maturity of its seniors.

Last month, the state gap ostensibly tightened further when standout Riley Mahoney of the Prairie Ridge co-op suffered a season-ending ACL tear, deal-

ing a blow to a fellow state contender.

Of course, Geneva hasn’t exactly been able to coast in the interim. Not with Beitzel and Grace Ginsberg lending persistent tutelage to freshmen Lily Chapman, Holly Friedel, Bailey Pihera, Molly Lambillotte and Kelly Frank.

“Grace and Megan, I’ve really liked their positivity,” said Grootens, a first-time prep gymnast who had a club background in the sport before shifting to tumbling. “They’ve just kept the team really strong and on days we don’t really want to practice, they’ve just motivated us.”

the NFL and USFL. But at about 5-foot-7 – roughly the same height as Nick – Joe Herrera’s height worked against a possible football future. Both Herrera men channeled extra motivation by thriving as one of the smallest – if not the smallest – players on the field.

“Back in his high school days and even college, [Nick] was a heck of a little athlete,” said Joe Herrera, a lifelong Geneva resident. “It’s funny, we’d have conversations all the time and what would always come up is ‘Dad, why am I so short? Why did you and mom make me so short?’ We just laughed and said ‘Welcome to the world, son.’ ” Another such lesson came when academic shortcomings cost Nick a chance to play college baseball at NIU, instead routing him to junior college before heading to Elmhurst. He said he uses his own cautionary tale now when mentoring athletes as an assistant football and baseball coach at West Chicago, where he teaches health and physical education. He assisted in Geneva’s program for three years before jumping at the full-time opportunity at West Chicago.

“I definitely think I know those downfalls,” Nick Herrera said. “They were a huge influence in why I wanted to become a teacher and why I went on that path.”

Olson (Class of 1960) was a three-year basketball starter who went on to play collegiately at Northwestern. Olson also pitched for the Geneva baseball team and went on to become active in numerous community organizations, including helping found the Geneva Academic Foundation and serving as chairman of the Geneva Planning Commission. One of Geneva’s gymnasiums – now the school’s auxiliary gym – is named in his honor.

They share high school and college alma maters, diminutive statures, a willingness to run through – not just around – tacklers and, of course, a last name.

Come this weekend, Joe Herrera and his son, Nick, will add another commonality: spots in Geneva’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Joe Herrera (Class of 1979) and Nick Herrera (2006) join the late Mack Olson (Class of 1960) as the newest members of Geneva’s hall. A ceremony at halftime of Saturday’s 6 p.m. boys basketball game against Quincy will recognize the trio.

“I know it is emotional for me. Whether it’ll show or not, I don’t know,” Nick Herrera said. “But it’s such an honor to be inducted in general and to be able to go in with my dad at the same time is that much more exciting and that much more meaningful to me. So definitely a cool experience, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Nonetheless, dad’s zest for physical football wasn’t lost on Nick.

“Most of my running was in between the tackles and power running,” Joe Herrera said. “When Nick was a little boy playing Tri-City football one of the first things I taught him was don’t run away from defensive backs – hit them, run at them, hit them hard and let them know you’re going to be coming at them all game. … He didn’t run like a typical halfback. He ran like a power back, but he did have a little speed to go with it.”

At Geneva, Nick Herrera was a two-time all-conference player and offensive player of the year in 2005. He also was a four-year starter in baseball, eventually continuing his career at John. A Logan College and playing baseball (as a catcher and outfielder) and football at Elmhurst College.

The Elmhurst connection is another tie that bonds father and son; Joe Herrera shined for the Bluejays’ football program in the early 1980s, eventually drawing scouts’ attention from

COMING ATTRACTION Arguably Geneva’s two biggest home games of the regular season – a recent win against Batavia and tonight’s meeting with St. Charles East – came on Thursday nights, a scheduling sore spot for the conference in recent years.

Saints coach Pat Woods said a plan appears to be in place effective next year that would allow for a higher percentage of conference games to occur on Friday and Saturday nights.

NOTEWORTHY East plans to set own pace Tonight’s blockbuster Upstate Eight Conference River matchup between St. Charles East (18-2, 9-1 UEC River) and host Geneva (20-2, 8-1 UEC River) provides stark contrasts, as East prefers an uptempo, free-flowing game while Geneva is much bigger and thrives in the half court and on the glass.

The Vikings were unable to create the tempo they were looking for in the teams’ first meeting in St. Charles – a 77-69 Saints’ triumph in December – and East coach Pat Woods is confident his high-scoring squad will again be able to play its brand of basketball.

“I think even if we play half court, our half-court offense is a lot quicker than theirs, so even if they do slow it down, we’re still going to get it going very fast, so it’ll still be a relatively high-scoring game,” Woods said.

While the Saints, like just about everyone else in the state, yield ample size against the Vikings, Woods said the mismatches work both ways as Geneva’s larger lineup has to keep tabs on several shifty East perimeter threats.

“I just feel like the high school game, guards control the tempo, and fortunately we have a few guards who are pretty good at that,” Woods said. “ … They have their advantages, we have ours, so it’s just a matter of seeing how it plays out and how we compete.”

East’s defensive pressure led to 25 Geneva turnovers in the first meeting, allowing the Saints to pull away during the third quarter. The Vikings will look to cut down their turnovers – and the accompanying transition baskets for East – in a major way tonight, and hope the return of senior guard Pace Temple from injury last month provides a boost in that department.

“I’m glad that Pace is healthy and he gets to experience his senior year because I hate when kids get injured,” Woods said. “It’s the worst part of the game, so I’m glad they’re at full strength because that’s how you want to play someone, when they’re at their best.”

An East sweep of Geneva would practically guarantee the Saints the top seed at next month’s IHSA Class 4A Geneva Regional while a Vikings win tonight would create some ambiguity.

“I’m more concerned with just getting the game for conference purposes,” Woods said.

“I’ve been looked at for fullback, linebacker,” Frazier said. “Talking to Wheaton, they said it depends on how the rest of their recruiting class shakes out. I could play anywhere from super back on offense to a sort of hybrid end or linebacker on defense, so we’ll see what happens. Anything works for me, whatever gets me on the field.”

More than seven months passed from when Batavia senior offensive lineman Jack Breshears verbally committed to Division-I Florida Atlantic and Wednesday’s National Signing Day. That’s plenty of time to develop cold feet, especially in a college football recruiting culture in which coaches from other schools often continue courting athletes who already have committed.

At Batavia football’s signing day ceremony Wednesday morning, Breshears said it took a second, official visit to Boca Raton, Florida, in January to attain peace of mind.

“I was kind of scared, I wasn’t as high on FAU, I wasn’t sure if I made the right decision for me,” Breshears said.

“But I talked to my parents, and they told me when you go on this official visit, make sure this is the right choice for you,

and if not, de-commit.

“But when I went on this official visit, everything I experienced on my unofficial visit was exactly [such as I remembered]. I just felt right when I got there that it was my future home, which is perfect for me.”

Florida Atlantic, which competes in Conference USA, is coming off a 3-9 season in head coach Charlie Partridge’s first year. Breshears said he’s already developed rapport with fellow Owls recruits.

“We started a group chat actually,” Breshears said. “All the other commits are the nicest guys I’ve met in my life. I met a lot of recruits from other schools and they were not as nice as at FAU. They brought me in with open arms and I really felt a part of the family. … It’s a really nice family atmosphere there, and since it’s so far away from home that’s what means the most to me, family.”

Marmion to honor Koutsos: Former Marmion football great Tom Koutsos will be inducted into the Cadets’ hall of fame during halftime of Marmion’s basketball game against Sandwich, which begins at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Protect your skin in order to prevent cellulitis Dear Doctor K: My son developed a large, red, swollen area on his arm. The doctor called it cellulitis. My son is better now, but I’d like to learn more about cellulitis and what can be done to prevent it.

Dear Reader: Cellulitis is a serious bacterial infection of the skin. Bacteria live on the surface of our skin, but the skin is built to keep the bacteria from getting inside us. If they get beneath the surface of the skin, and then into the tissues below the skin, they can make trouble.

When our skin gets injured, bacteria can break through the skin’s protective outer layer.

This typically happens at the site of an injury, such as a cut, puncture, sore, burn or bite. It’s even more likely if we have had recent surgery that cut through the skin, or have a catheter carrying medicines into a vein.

Other things that make a person vulnerable to cellulitis are edema (swelling), poor blood flow, or a skin rash that creates breaks in the skin.

Once beneath the skin’s surface, bacteria multiply. They make chemicals that cause inflammation. Cellulitis is the most common type of bacterial

With cellulitis, the affected skin feels warm and is usually red, swollen and painful. There may be a spreading network of red streaks in the skin. (I’ve put a photo of an arm affected by cellulitis on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) Fever and a general feeling of illness often accompany cellulitis.

Many types of bacteria can cause cellulitis. However, by far the most common are streptococcus (“strep”) and staphylococcus (“staph”). Cellulitis is treated with antibiotics. Doctors don’t need to identify which specific bacteria caused the infection. They can prescribe a “broad spectrum” antibiotic that will treat most types of bacteria that cause cellulitis.

In most cases, cellulitis improves within a day or two after antibiotics are started.

If you have mild cellulitis, you can usually treat it at home with antibiotics taken by mouth.

Applying warm compresses and elevating the infected area can

help. If you have severe cellulitis, you may need to be treated in the hospital with antibiotics given into a vein.

If symptoms don’t improve or if they worsen within the first two or three days of treatment, contact your doctor. It could mean you need a different antibiotic.

To help prevent cellulitis: • Prevent skin injury. Wear protective gloves while gardening and working outdoors. Wear long sleeves and trousers while hiking.

Avoid going barefoot outdoors.

• Treat minor skin wounds promptly. Gently wipe away dirt and wash with antibiotic soap.

Apply antibiotic ointment and cover with a clean bandage.

• Contact your doctor to treat all deep wounds and animal bites.

Finally, call your doctor whenever a skin injury becomes red, warm, swollen or tender. Other conditions besides cellulitis may be the cause. But it takes a health professional to make the diagnosis accurately, and to know when antibiotics are necessary.

Declarer seems to have 13 easy tricks: one spade, five hearts, five diamonds and two spade ruffs in the dummy. But if he takes the first trick, ruffs a spade, and plays a heart to his hand, he goes down with this layout.

Instead, after trumping the spade, South should cash dummy’s heart ace. When the 4-0 break is revealed, declarer continues with dummy’s heart 10. After East covers with his jack, South wins with his king, plays a diamond to the dummy, leads a heart to his eight, cashes his heart queen and claims.

This is a part-time position consisting of 16 hours per week, and reports directly to the Chief of Police. This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of functions that support the records management and administrative obligations of the police department.

Desired qualifications include, but are not limited to graduation from high school or equivalent with two (2) years of law enforcement records experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish successful working relationships; ability to work under pressure and/or with frequent interruptions; ability to work with angry or difficult customers. Experience with New World Systems Records Management program, Municipal Software, Inc. (MSI), and GovPayNet are a plus.

The three-day event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, through Sunday, Feb. 8, at Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles.

With 300 exhibits featuring award-winning contractors, designers, remodelers and craftsmen, homeowners can investigate new styles, surfaces and building materials. Attendees can explore the latest in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, additions, landscaping, interior design and exterior remodeling.

New this year is “Kitchen Makeovers,” which will be presented at 1 p.m. each day by Pamela Coslet of Vineyard Chic of St. Charles.

Other attractions include “Mr. Fix It,” Lou Manfredini, the host of “Housesmarts,” a frequent contributor to the “Today Show” and host of WGN Radio’s “Mr. Fix It” program.

Designer Sandra Nunnerley: ‘Mix it up’ THE WASHINGTON POST New York interior designer Sandra Nunnerley joined Post staff writer Jura Koncius recently on our Home Front online chat.

Here is an edited excerpt.

Jura Koncius: My home has a room designated as my husband’s office. We really don’t have any art up. We have an ocean blue wall color.

Any suggestions on art pieces to use? How about photos?

Black-and-white vs. color?

Sandra Nunnerley: You are definitely on track! We use black-and-white photos all the time in a range of price points.

There are some inexpensive sources online for fashion photographs. If you want to put a collection together, the auction houses all have photography sales. My motto is “see, see, see.” Go to museums and galleries and see what is out there. Even look for “art walks,” where artists in your area open up their studios for visitors. We recently did an installation for a client with a great photography collection, and we combined color and black-and-white.

Don’t limit yourself.

Koncius: What is the best way to match up frames and other elements of artwork to build a gallery wall?

Nunnerley: We always lay all the pieces out on the floor and take a photo so we can view it upright and edit as needed.

There are also temporary wall hooks that are great to use if you are unsure. I like to find interesting juxtapositions within the work; different genres and periods make for an interesting and personal wall.

Koncius: When is it a wise idea to use photos as art and when would be best not to use them?

Nunnerley: There are no rules.

As I mentioned before, you want your walls to be a personal reflection of yourself. Mix it up!

Koncius: My house has a two-story foyer with a center staircase. The floors and stair treads are a stained dark brown oak. The banister is also oak, and the pickets and stair tread backs are painted white (like the rest of the trim in our home). The foyer is painted Benjamin Moore’s Manches-

ter Tan, and we have a lot of shades of blue (mostly navy), beige and chocolate furnishings. The house is a Colonial, but my decor is a bit transitional. I’d love your thoughts on painting the banister and also a recommendation for a carpet runner for the stairs.

Nunnerley: I always stain the banister the same color as the floor; in your case, dark brown.

For carpet runners, look for a great striped carpet in your colors of tan and blue. I love a striped carpet on stairs to add a bit of punch and bronze stair rods with a simple ball finial to dress the stair beautifully.

Koncius: We’re looking for new window treatments. Due to the high number of windows in our home, we would like to try to limit our costs.

Any suggestions for favorite places where we should check?

Nunnerley: There are so many great catalogue companies today online. Room & Board (www.roomandboard.com) or Smith & Noble (www.smithandnoble.com) are two that come to mind.

Koncius: I’m always daunted by hanging art. How can I get over my fear?

Nunnerley: I always encourage clients to think about how to display works. For example, I like to mix different kinds of art, such as tribal or fold art and sculpture, with more everyday objects, like books or whimsical things with no particular value.

This allows the eye to make new and unexpected discoveries.

Koncius: Do you travel a lot? What design tips have you pulled from the different places you’ve been?

Nunnerley: For me, travel is very important. You never know what you will find or when you will see something in a new way. I often discover new artists or modes of expression that are not as well known at home.

Right now, I’m loving the Los Angeles-based Japanese American artist Kaz Oshiro. I have one of his pieces in my living room, which you can see in my book “Interiors.”

In the book, I write about my travels and the inspiration I’ve found while traveling.
