Judge denies bond for Geneva woman charged in husband’s death

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Geneva woman accused of fatally poisoning her husband with sleeping pills was denied bond Wednesday and placed on suicide watch at the Kane County jail.

Julia L. Gutierrez, 53, faces two counts of first-degree murder in a case that Kane County Julia Associate Judge Robert Gutierrez Morrow described as “strikingly similar” to an incident involving the couple in 2002.

Accompanied by her attorney, a public defender, Gutierrez appeared in court Wednesday for a continued bond hearing, during which the prosecution detailed the events leading to the Jan. 28 well-being check at the couple’s Crissey Avenue home.

Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams said Gutierrez mailed a package to friends in Rock City that contained a note as well as a $5,000 check and cash in excess of $40,000. She instructed them to donate the cash to charity and keep the check for themselves, he said.

The friends in Rock City initiated the well-being check, he said.

Upon the Geneva police’s arrival at the couple’s home, it was apparent Eduardo Gutierrez, who was in the living room, had been dead “for some time,” Sams said. He said Julia Gutierrez was unconscious in an upstairs bathroom.

She is accused of fatally drugging her husband with a smoothie containing six sleeping pills, Sams said.

She was suffering Eduardo from an “environmenGutierrez tal” illness and told police it was unbearable for him to see her suffer, that “he was suffering more than me,” Sams said, quoting Julia Gutierrez.

Authorities found a handwritten note by Julia Gutierrez, Sams said. In the note, he said, she declared her love for her husband and asked for forgiveness, adding that God understands.

She also indicated that “losing our church family was the last straw,” Sams said.

According to Eduardo Gutierrez’s obituary, he was an active member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in North Aurora. A memorial service is planned for him there at noon Friday.

Sams said the case is similar to events involving the couple in 2002.

Then, he said, Julia Gutierrez gave her husband a milkshake laced with sleeping pills. She received treatment after that incident, he said.

Neither Sams nor the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office would comment on why charges weren’t filed in 2002. In his decision to deny bond, the judge referenced Julia Gutierrez’s language about both her and her husband not surviving the incident, as well as the 2002 events.

Morrow said the jail’s medical staff should be aware of any medications Julia Gutierrez is taking and should monitor the administration of any medication so it can’t be accumulated.

The case, which was assigned to Circuit Judge D.J. Tegeler, is next expected in court at 9 a.m. Feb. 11.

FALLS AND FIGHTS CAUSE MOST EYE INJURIES Eye injuries not only pose a threat of vision loss and disfigurement, but they can also prove costly. The median cost of treating serious eye injuries increased from $12,430 to $20,116 over ten years. Researchers also found that falls are the leading cause of eye injuries, accounting for more than 8,425 hospitalizations, most of which involved people aged 60 and over. Slipping caused nearly 3,000 eye injuries, and falling down stairs caused 900. Fighting was found to be the second most common cause of eye trauma and vision loss and also the top cause of ocular trauma among individuals between the ages of 10 and 59 years.

It is hoped that identifying these causes will lead to prevention.

P.S. Each day, about 2,000 U.S. workers have a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

AURORA – Hesed House’s former Executive Director Ryan Dowd will return Monday to lead the comprehensive homeless shelter and resource center, officials stated in a news release.

Dowd served as Hesed House’s executive director for nine years, leaving in 2013 when Ryan Dowd he founded the Center for Faith and Human Rights based in Washington, D.C. There, he focused on assisting human-rights activists in repressive countries, according to the release.

Most recently, Dowd served as executive director at Ayuda, serving vulnerable immigrants in Washington

D.C., Virginia and Maryland with legal, social and language services, according to the release.

“We believe he is the right leader who possesses the vision and experience to guide us as we move forward with the goal of becoming one of the premier anti-poverty organizations fighting to end homelessness in the Fox River Valley,” Hesed House Board Chairman John Ball stated in the release. Hesed House’s previous executive director, Michael Cobb, resigned Jan. 5.

Until Dowd returns, 18-year veteran staff member and current Associate Director Neil McMenamin will serve as interim executive director.

Dowd first served at Hesed House as a volunteer at age 13 and continued in various staff roles throughout college and law school, according to the release.

ST. CHARLES – TriCity Family Services in Geneva announced Kathleen Hausmann as its new director of development, according to a news release.

A nonprofit agency, TriCity Family Services provides affordable counseling and other mental health services.

Hausmann will lead the TriCity Family Services development team out of the new satellite location at 2570 Foxfield Road, Suite 101, St. Charles, according to the release.

Hausmann will be responsible for all private sector fundraising efforts, helping to generate the revenue necessary to sustain and develop organization programs and services, according to the release.

She will oversee the organization’s public relations and marketing efforts to promote its understanding, use and support.

“TriCity Family Services is truly fortunate to have a fundraising professional with Kathleen’s experience, skills and obvious passion for our cause, leading our development team,” TriCity Family Services Executive Director Jim Otepka stated in the release. “I have no doubt she will not only strengthen TCFS’ fundraising efforts but will deepen this agency’s near 50-year relationship with the greater Tri-City community.”

accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers for 13 years as part of their internal marketing/corporate communication team, according to the release.

ST. CHARLES – The Downtown St. Charles Partnership is bringing back its Chair-ity event for a second year – with some changes.

Chair-ity is an outdoor, public art exhibition that asks community members to decorate Adirondack chairs. Participants have the option of donating the chair for auction.

“We had such success last year and wanted to bring back this fun, community focused event,” DSCP volunteer Chuck Parr stated in a news release.

Changes this year include a shorter duration of the program and the addition of a social media contest. It indicated the entries will be divided into three categories – business, nonprofit and resident.

“The public will vote online to decide the winners of each category, [which] offers another way for people to get involved,” DSCP Executive Director Lynne Schwartz said in the release.

Any individual, group or business may participate, according to the release. It noted that entry forms are due by May 13, and the chairs need to be in place by May 22. According to the release, participants may supply their own Adirondack chair or buy one. Chairs are available at Ace Hardware, 2650 E. Main St., St. Charles, for $39.99.

Geneva OKs $500 fee for historical landmark application

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen this week approved text amendments to the historic preservation ordinance to require a $500 fee for owners to apply for historic landmark status.

Aldermen voted, 9-1, to approve the measure, with 1st Ward Alderman Mike Bruno voting no.

In a separate, unanimous vote, aldermen also approved a $500 minimum application deposit for owners and non-owners to apply for Historic Preservation Commission review of applications for landmark status of a single building or nominating an area to become a historic district.

The purpose of requiring the depos-

Staff review of third-party costs for minutes, transcripts and legal notices for Plan Commission applications showed that, on average, the city spent $494.65 for applications that require a public hearing.

Bruno said he would prefer that officials consider subsidizing the cost for the public good of preserving a historic property.

“I am all for the cost recovery argument,” Bruno said. “By requiring that deposit from the homeowner, we have lost the incentive for a third party to solicit that support and make it just a whole happy experience for everyone.”

Community Development Director David DeGroot said if the $500 fee for research, court reporters and public hearings was a hardship, the council could choose to waive the fee.

If the Historic Preservation Commission initiates a landmarking effort, it would ask the council to approve covering those costs, DeGroot said.

But 2nd Ward Alderman Don Cummings said he could not imagine a situation where a person who could not afford the fee who would not reach out for others to help.

“I would like to see more and more often within the city matching of revenues with costs,” Cummings said.

“It helps people clarify in their minds what things cost. … It helps people understand there is a cost to filing. ... I

think it’s fair. I think it’s equitable. I support the $500 fee to the district and the homeowner .... and for a third party.”

Fifth Ward Alderman Tom Simonian said if 50 people decide not to plaque their homes because of the $500 deposit, they can host a fundraiser.

“I think this should remain the way it is,” Simonian said. “I am in support of leaving it where it is. We worked extremely hard to get to where we are.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Radecki said he agreed with Simonian to have the $500 fee.

“I think it creates fairness and parity,” Radecki said. “We should have the fee. If we did have an influx [of landmarking applications] it would be at substantial cost to the city.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Singers group’s “Bushes & Briars” album will be distributed via CDs as a result of a grant from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley.

The grant of $4,835 will pay for the manufacture of 1,000 CDs, the CD jewel boxes and booklets to be enclosed, according to a news release.

The album of 25 songs consists of choral arrangements of British and American folk songs found in the two-volume set of musical scores “Folk-Songs for Choirs,” edited by English composer and chorus master John Rutter and published by Oxford University Press, the release indicat-

ed. The album takes its name from one of the songs. In the release, the foundation described the choir’s recording as “one-of-a-kind choral music that inspires all generations.”

“These songs are some of the most treasured choral works in the English-speaking world,” Kay Kendall, the St. Charles Singers executive director, said in the release. “Recording the complete set is a singular accomplishment, as there doesn’t appear to be another such complete version on the market.”

Kendall said in the release that the grant to produce the CDs “supports the St. Charles Singers’ mission of performing, promoting, and preserving great choral music. We’re immensely grateful to the foundation for helping

make this new CD release a reality.”

The album is slated for industrywide release in North America and overseas on Tuesday, the release states.

GENEVA – February is Canned Food Month, and Northern Illinois Food Bank is marking the occasion.

Northern Illinois Food Bank is involved in a number of programs designed to provide fresh produce, dairy products and meat to neighbors in need, but canned foods have long been a source of donations to food drives held at schools, libraries, offices and churches, according to a news release.

“We’re grateful for every canned food donation that comes through our doors,” Julie Yurko, Northern Illinois Food Bank’s president and CEO, stated in the release. “While many of us take the convenience of canned foods for granted, they can be essential for hungry neighbors who either don’t have access to refrigeration or are struggling to acquire fresh alternatives.”

Low-sodium canned vegetables, canned fruit in juice, low-sodium soups, canned chicken and canned tuna are mainstays on Northern Illinois Food Bank’s list of most-needed items for food drives. One in seven people in northern Illinois faces hunger, and each week Northern Illinois Food Bank provides nutritious food to more than 71,000 people through a network of 800 community food pantries and feeding program, the release stated.

“Providing food to someone who may go without is something everyone can feel good about,” Yurko stated in the release. “Particularly for children, putting a nutritious non perishable item in a food drive donation box can be a powerful moment.”

MAPLE PARK – The Maple Park Village Board has unanimously approved the hiring of a new police chief to replace the retiring chief in May. The board at its meeting Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of hiring Maple Park Police Sgt. Tony Ayala to replace Chief Mike Acosta, who has been with the department since 2009. Village Tony Ayala Trustees Valerie Massa and Luke Goucher were absent from the meeting.

“Tony has worked in the Village of Maple Park already for more than two years,” Village President Kathy Curtis said. “He was promoted to sergeant by the current police chief, and when the police chief retired, he did give Tony a recommendation.”

Ayala will assume the police chief role May 3 at a starting salary of $54,000 with benefits. He earned his associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice administration, and he has 20 years of law

enforcement experience. Ayala served with the Northern Illinois University Police Department before coming to Maple Park, according to a news release.

“I’m looking forward to just a smooth transition and carrying forward, of course, the professionalism and the community policing model that we already have in place. because I think that’s important,” Ayala said.

Acosta will officially finish his six years with the Maple Park Police Department on May 14 and retire with his wife to their Sugar Grove home.

The outgoing chief is best known for his work with the community’s kids and being a proud supporter of the village’s Special Olympics team. Under Acosta, the Maple Park police raised more than any department in the state in the Torch Run for Special Olympics fundraiser in two consecutive years and mended what he felt was a disconnect between the community and local law enforcement.

Ayala’s goals include the same community-centered values, he said.

“Chief [Acosta] and I, we have similar experiences, but also our vision seems to be that our kids are very, very important,” Ayala said. “They’re our future.”

It’s intriguing to be able to relate my personal history to what I’m learning about in history class, and even more interesting to hear my family’s stories about the bravery of those immigrants, such as my ancestors, and how they risked everything to provide a brighter tomorrow for their descendants.

My heritage has always played a major role in my extended family, and the European roots are visible in everything from our traditions to our celebrations. Take, for instance, what I believe is one of the most important elements of European culture: food! On my mom’s side of the family, every Christmas dinner consists of Swedish cuisine, such as meatballs, rice pudding and fruit soup.

Throughout the year, my dad’s side will have traditional Polish sausage and pierogies (potato and cheese filled dumplings) as part of meals. Call me crazy, but I’ll take a plate of Swedish pancakes over a cheeseburger any day.

My family’s traditions also reflect our heritage and provide a way for us to connect the past to our present. Santa Lucia Day, a Swedish holiday celebrated on Dec. 13, calls for the oldest girl in a family to bring breakfast to her family early in the morning, all while wearing a wreath of candles on her head. Given that I’m the oldest daughter in the family and I really don’t like getting up early, we usually settle for simply acknowledging that it’s Santa Lucia Day and eating something tasty, such as traditional saffron buns.

On the Polish side, Christmas Eve holds the tradition of Christmas Eve wafers (oplatek). Each member of the family gets a wafer, and – as you go around to your relatives – you break a piece off of their wafer to eat and they eat a piece of yours while wishing each other all the best in the new year. It’s a fun way to socialize with relatives while getting a snack, too!

My parents, sisters and I have also visited various museums in the Chicagoland area that relate to our heritage, and they really bring the past to life. The Swedish American Museum in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood has a phenomenal children’s exhibit where kids can go through the journey of an immigrant, as well as an extensive gift shop and all kinds of displays about Swedes in America. The Polish Roman Catholic Union features exhibits about famous Poles, such as Pope John Paul II and pianist Paderewski.

These two museums are very different but both interesting in how they convey history in unique ways.

Immigrants were a huge part of shaping America into the melting pot it is today, and it’s exciting to relate U.S. history to my own personal history. I’m proud to be a descendant of European immigrants who took unimaginable risks in hopes of living the American dream. Whether you can trace your ancestry back to Europe or some other location, I’m certain that your history holds its own stories and traditions, which still may influence your life today.

Thanks to the ambition of my ancestors, I’m using the past to enrich my present and hopefully create an even better future.

The perils of political hindsight in Iowa

On to New Hampshire. But first, before it fades, here is what’s in the rear view mirror in Iowa.

1. For the Democrats, there are two ways of interpreting what was basically a tie.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders won on spin because the “Sanders surges, Clinton in trouble” story is irresistible for the media. But former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won on delegates, because if she and Sanders split the regular delegates in other races, too, she’ll win the nomination thanks to her huge lead in superdelegates.

Unless there’s a media surge for Sanders, Clinton’s enormous and seemingly decisive lead among black and Latino voters seems unshakable.

2. Some people said businessman Donald Trump’s decision to skip the last de-

bate hurt him. But doing that allowed him to dominate the media for several days. Just showing up, as if he were a normal candidate, wouldn’t have achieved that. It’s the Red Queen Race problem: As the campaign goes on, norms of how the press covers each campaign make it harder and harder for Trump to dominate the media, and he needs that to win.

3. Just because Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is running as a coalition-style candidate doesn’t mean he’s not very conservative. His Senate voting record and his policy commitments during the campaign are down-the-line conservative. And on the one issue where that wasn’t the case – immigration – he has changed his position.

4. Former surgeon Ben Carson won the battle for the most billboards visible on the way to and from the Des Moines airport. Perhaps

that was a strategy aimed at the traveling press, but it’s also a way for campaign consultants to convince a candidate that money is being put to good use (just speculating, for what it’s worth).

5. A lot of people are calling for Iowa to switch to a primary after the slow reporting of Democratic results this year and the botched counting of the Republican votes in 2012.

Better idea: Keep the caucuses, but have the state, rather than the parties, run them with properly trained poll workers. Surely officials can pay for this by diverting a small percentage of revenue they raise in sales taxes from the business generated by campaigns and the visiting press corps.

Just because Hotel Baker was built in 1928 didn’t mean that the Rox City Grill needed to be an old-school restaurant.

Rowena Salas, owner and general manager of Hotel Baker, knew it was time to update the look of the restaurant, which is located inside of the hotel.

“It’s always important to keep updating and moving forward,” Salas said.

“It’s certainly going to look different to customers with a new arrangement of things, new spot for our entertainment, but – for the most part – you know, we may have a new look, but we still have the same good stuff.”

Salas hired Fredenhagen Remodel and Design to do a majority of the work, and the renovation began Jan. 4.

A revamped Rox City Grill is set to open Thursday, Feb. 4.

Salas had used Fredenhagen for prior projects, and she also had used Miceli Drapery, which not only did the drapery for Rox City Grill, but also the entire Hotel Baker.

After about a month of work, Salas is thrilled with the result and excited If you go to see customers’ reactions.

Salas even mentioned a slight endorsement from St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina about the taste of those steaks, which the mayor confirmed.

“The steaks are the quality of any steakhouse in the Chicago area,” Rogina said. “And I had great pleasure devouring a 35-ounce tomahawk steak there once.”

Salas noted that Rox City Grill will still have steaks and that it hasn’t really taken anything off of the menu.

Added to the menu are items such as butternut, squash-filled tortelloni and the lobster macaroni and cheese, which Salas joked was “making her mouth water just talking about it.”

Also not changing with the re-opening of the restaurant is the entertain-

ment that takes place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Salas did mention that the majority of her customers fell into a mid-40s crowd, and she hoped to get even more younger people in with the new look.

Martini Thursdays also will continue at Rox City Grill, which has just endured its first major change since the restaurant was moved to the front of the hotel in 2010.

“We felt people didn’t like having to walk through the entire hotel to get to the restaurant,” Salas said. “We don’t have that traditional hotel restaurant food, either. We pride ourselves in that. We think the location and now new look really give us a chance to do something exciting with Rox City Grill.”

Bulldogs qualify 2 for sectionals; team takes 3rd

ccasey@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – Taryn Boyce knew heading to the IHSA Glenbard West Regional that her Batavia gymnastics team was not going to win.

And that was more than all right.

In fact, she got about as strong of an effort as she could have asked for with her team taking third overall with a score of 134.125, which was close to the team’s season-high that it hit last week.

“We did awesome,” Boyce said. “It was one of our top team scores. I definitely think we got about as much out of the girls as we could, and I’m really proud of all of them tonight.”

Batavia finished behind host and regional champion Glenbard West (147.575) and Wheaton Warrenville co-op (141.45).

Though the team did not automatically qualify – finding out about an outside shot at an at-large bid after today’s Lake Park Regional – the Bulldogs did automatically qualify two individuals for the Feb. 11 sectional, which will also take place Glenbard West.

Megan McGee tied for third in vault with a score of 9.25, while fellow senior Lauren Stangl took fifth on the balance beam with her 8.775.

McGee has had to overcome her fair share of hurdles. Besides returning this season from a broken femur, McGee has

had to not only get back her physical strength, but also the mental strength, which often proves to be much harder.

“I honestly wasn’t sure if I’d be at this point after the injury,” McGee said. “In warmups (today) I was feeling a little nervous, but once the meet started, that adrenaline kind of took over and I was able to do enough to get through. I made state last year with vault, so I’m hoping to do it again.”

She also has a chance to qualify as an at-large individual in her floor exercise (8.525) and uneven bars (8.85).

“Hopefully I can get through in something else,” McGee said. “But with any of the events, I just need to take my time and not rush it. Being a senior, I might as well push myself that extra inch to try and get the most out of it.”

“It’s inspirational,” Boyce said of McGee’s journey back to gymnastics. “I know she may be frustrated with herself because she may not be where she was, but when you look at the big picture, it’s like, ‘Megan, look what you’ve done.

Very few people can say they have done this.’”

Stangl also has a chance to go through with her score on uneven bars (8.6).

However, her score on beam was not only enough to get her through into sectionals, but she couldn’t wipe the smile off her face.

Her mom included.

“I’m super excited because it means tonight isn’t my last meet,” Stangl said.

“My mom was crying and I’m about to.

I’ve been doing this sport since I was a baby, so it’s just really nice to finish the year off this way. Even though it’s not my first time qualifying for sectionals, it means a whole lot more being a senior.”

Boyce said Stangl is “one of the hardest-working gymnasts” that Batavia has and was thrilled for her getting another chance to compete.

Batavia’s lone all-around gymnast Lillian Baty-Barr finished with a score of 31.35 as a freshman at regionals. Boyce thinks even though that score may not guarantee her a spot in sectionals, it can serve as so much more.

Much the same can be said about the number of Bulldogs’ gymnasts that will return next year.

Losing that likes of McGee and Stangl, along with McKenna Sloan will certainly not be an easy spot to fill, but Boyce likes what meets like Wednesday night’s can do for the previously inexperienced girls.

“You can tell the difference in composure with girls like Megan and Lauren to our younger girls,” Boyce said. “A girl like Lillian, tonight was huge for her.

Next year she’s going to be coming in as a leader as a sophomore. That’s huge and when you look at that in the big picture, it’s something I’m really excited for.”

Batavia grad making seamless transition to DePaul as freshman

season here at DePaul in November, and that was very different,” she said.

“I only ran two years in high school, so I really didn’t have much racing experience in general. So I think the transition wasn’t really that hard for me because I never really even got used to running in high school and I jumped to college. It was definitely fun. Track has been probably more different, just the different facilities, especially with indoor so far. At Batavia, I only really ever ran at Batavia.

Just with our track and everything, we never really had any away meets, so now traveling to other tracks has been very different. Racing’s been very fun. Very competitive, but fun.

“In high school, I think I definitely had a lot more confidence. I knew exactly who I was running against every single race. I wasn’t afraid to make moves. And now I think I’ve been racing a little more reserved,

And equally laudatory reviews of her freshman year came when describing the aspects away from the track. Rea is thrilled with living in the city and attending business classes in the Loop, so much so that DePaul might want to hire her to start writing recruiting materials.

“I’m a business major here. I’m double-majoring in actuarial science and accounting, and I love being able to go downtown for my classes,” she said. “The business school’s located right downtown on State Street and Jackson, so I get to go downtown, I feel very mature, I feel like an adult.

I take the CTA to my classes, and I just feel like I have the world at my fingertips and it’s super cool.”

While the present seems to be a delight for the Batavia native, she also has her eyes on the future. This season, she’s looking to break the five-minute mark in her mile-long

But Rea’s looking into the far future, too, excited about the things she wants to do on this continent and others.

“On the track, I’d love to better myself and drop down my time a good amount, and I’d love to be able to be a strong contributor to my team in cross country and in track for the next four years. School-wise, academically, I’d love to hopefully graduate with honors in the accounting program here at DePaul. I want to create financial plans for developing countries,” she said. “So hopefully move to – right now my vision would be (to go to) Ghana in Africa and work there.”

The goals are ambitious, but for someone who works hard on two sports and an academic schedule throughout the entire calendar, they definitely seem attainable.

Miranda Rea hardly ever stops running.

Competing in both cross country and track at DePaul, the Batavia High School alum is training and competing pretty much the entire school year. And because all her cross country teammates are the same people she competes with when the focus turns to track, it can seem like one yearlong season.

“When it comes to training, it feels like it’s one yearlong thing, but the season definitely changes, so it definitely gets broken up in that regard,” Rea said. “But it’s the same girls training every day, sitting right next to me, so it kind of does feel like it is one season.”

Rea is a freshman with the Blue Demons, and she reported that things couldn’t be better in her transition to all aspects of college life, be it on the track or off.

But while the transition has been near perfect for her, there are certainly still plenty of differences between high school and college in both the sports she’s competing in.

BARTLETT – It was a tale of two halves for the St. Charles North boys basketball team Wednesday against Bartlett.

After the teams went into halftime tied at 24, the Hawks jumped out of the gate in the third quarter by clamping down defensively and pulled away for a 57-40 win over the North Stars in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover game.

North (3-13) scored just four points in the third quarter and Bartlett (1410) was able to get good looks offensively for much of the second half.

“We strung together too many mistakes in the third quarter defensively and Bartlett plays well with a lead,” North head coach Tom Poulin said.

“I thought defensively we had a lot of breakdowns in our man-to-man, which is pretty uncharacteristic for us as of late.”

North was led by Jarod Karom’s 12 points – on four 3-pointers – while Griffin Hammer and Mikey Schroeder added nine points apiece.

Bartlett was led by Tyler Pauletti’s 16 points, while Robby Jimenez and Benjamin Reyes were each in double figures with 14 and 10, respectively.

The 3-point shot kept North in the game early on. Of the North Stars’ nine made field goals in the first half, six of them came from behind the arc – three apiece from Karom and Schroeder.

Those looks from deep dried up in the second half as Bartlett bottled up North’s ball-handlers and limited opportunities from behind the arc.

North hit just one 3-pointer in the second half.

“Good defense leads to controlled offense,” Bartlett head coach Jim Wolfsmith said. “It was stopping them from getting their 3-point kick

outs and then controlling their drives and not doubling in off the wing.”

Another trade-off of taking jumpers was that North didn’t get to the free-throw line until the 3:55 mark of the fourth quarter.

In the first half, Bartlett wasn’t whistled for its first foul until two minutes remaining in the second quarter.

“I’ve been coaching 18 years (and) I don’t remember too many times when a team goes a whole half without fouling and that’s a pretty physical team over there,” Poulin said.

“We obviously need to do a better job of attacking and putting pressure on the defense where fouls may be called.”

A back-breaking stretch of turnovers for North came with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Bartlett’s Brett Awalt jumped the passing lane for a steal and went coast-to-coast for a dunk as the first of four straight North possessions that ended in turnovers, stretching the deficit from nine to 15 points.

“When you can stop them from getting those easy 3’s a couple times, you make them run their offense and hope they get impatient,” Wolfsmith said. “The fourth quarter was all about jumping those passing lanes.”

“The turnovers, I felt like that wasn’t them causing turnovers. I felt like that was us going through the motions for a stretch,” Poulin said.

Wednesday marked the fifthstraight loss for the North Stars and North hasn’t cracked 50 points offensively since Jan. 8 against Streamwood.

“We’re better than we showed tonight. We are. Our record doesn’t define us,” Poulin said. “We’re a better team than our record indicates and we’re a better team than we showed in the second half tonight.”

Healthy lifestyle changes will combat prediabetes

Dear Dr. K: After years of normal blood sugar levels, I’m suddenly in the prediabetes range. Am I on an irreversible path to Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes?

Dear Reader: No, you’re not, but you’re facing a challenge. Prediabetes is an early warning signal: You are at higher risk for developing diabetes. But diabetes is not inevitable.

In fact, we know more about how to reduce the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes than we know about preventing most other major diseases. There are several things you can do to reverse course.

Your blood glucose, or blood sugar, level was likely measured during routine blood work that was part of your physical exam. A normal blood sugar level is less than 100 mg/dL. You are considered to have prediabetes when your blood sugar level is between 100 and 125 milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) after an eight-hour fast. You have diabetes if your blood sugar is 126 mg/dL or higher.

If your blood test was done when you had not been fasting, then you might not really have prediabetes. It might be a false alarm.

Let’s start with a brief explanation of how your body breaks down foods.

During digestion, carbohydrates are turned into simple sugars, primarily glucose. To provide energy to cells, glucose needs to leave the blood and get inside the cells.

Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, signals the cells to extract glucose from the blood.

When levels of glucose in the blood rise (for example, after a meal), the pancreas produces more insulin.

That drives more glucose into the cells.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body’s cells do not react efficiently to insulin. As a result, not

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff as much glucose is driven into the cells, and more stays in the blood. As glucose starts to build up in the blood, the pancreas makes extra insulin to maintain a normal blood sugar. The cycle escalates.

Finally, the pancreas cannot keep up with the demand for more and more insulin. As a result, blood glucose levels remain elevated.

Prediabetes signals the cells of your body are starting to have trouble extracting glucose from the blood.

But you still can reverse course. Lifestyle changes are your best strategy.

If you are overweight, losing just 5 to 10 percent of your starting weight can help greatly improve your blood sugar. Eating healthy foods, but reducing the calorie count, is one part of this.

It’s also important to exercise regularly and stay physically active throughout the day. Even if it doesn’t help you to lose weight, regular physical activity will reduce your risk of getting diabetes.

If you’re a regular reader of this column, you won’t be surprised by this advice. I frequently urge a healthy lifestyle. But you might not realize just how powerful regular exercise, achieving a healthy weight and a healthy diet can be.

Scientific studies of the strongest type – randomized trials – find people can reduce their risk of developing diabetes by almost 60 percent. No medicine yet developed can give you that protection.

Corporal punishment is ineffective Dr. Wallace: I’m a normal 14-year-old girl. I’m a B student, never get into any kind of trouble and attend Sunday school regularly. My parents were divorced when I was 6 years old, and I have lived with my father ever since.

My father remarried a year ago to a lady who has two daughters close to my age. I never liked this lady when my father was dating her, and I like her even less now she is my stepmother. She is a very religious person and believes when she must discipline my two stepsisters and me she should paddle us on the rear.

This woman’s daughters are used to her corporal punishment, but I’m not. It really hurts, and it makes me despise her even more. When I talked to my dad about this he told me he doesn’t agree with spanking as a form of punishment, either.

However, he said he won’t interfere because my stepmother is in charge of discipline. My last three “swats on the rump” were delivered because my room didn’t pass neatness inspection.

I would like to know what you think of spanking as a means of discipline. Are you in favor of it? If your answer is no, I’ll present your answer to my stepmother. She reads your column regularly and likes it. – Nameless, Louisville, Kentucky

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Nameless: I am a staunch opponent of corporal punishment, and think both parents are making a big mistake. This form of discipline is ineffective, sometimes escalates into outright physical abuse and always engenders deep resentment.

In your case, it’s definitely not going to work. Someone who first encounters this form of punishment in her early adolescence is bound to find it excruciating and humiliating. A loss of privileges is a more effective form of discipline and should be combined with positive reinforcement for good behavior.

Dad should take the paddle out of stepmother’s hands.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a regular reader of your column and I usually agree with your advice, but you really blew it on your response to Caroline in Atlanta.

Her best friend was 17 and pregnant by her boyfriend.

Some of her friends planned a baby shower for her and, of course, Caroline was invited.

However, her mother would not allow her to go to the shower because she thought it was “tacky” for an unwed teen to be having a baby shower. You agreed with

her mother and told her not to go to the shower.

Was your answer because you were afraid Caroline might go out and get pregnant just so she could have a baby shower?

That’s ridiculous! Good friends do not desert good friends – regardless of the situation.

You should have told Caroline to go to the shower regardless of what her mother said, and then accept the punishment her mother would have dished out. – Nameless, Seattle Nameless: You misconstrued my answer to Caroline. I would have allowed my 16-year-old daughter to attend a baby shower for her pregnant, unwed best friend. I’m not in agreement with Caroline’s mother’s decision.

However, I felt Caroline needed to obey her mother’s wishes. Defying Mom over this matter would have precipitated a serious family rift, which would not have helped anyone and might have made it difficult for Caroline to be supportive of her friend in other ways. The baby shower just didn’t seem like an issue worth starting a fight with her mother over. I’m sure Caroline will be able to help her best friend in many other ways.

That is a great guideline for bridge.

It is the abnormal that has kept the game alive. Today, South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest heart seven. East wins with his ace and returns the heart nine. How should declarer continue?

You try to avoid rebidding immediately in a five-card suit, but two clubs is South’s best rebid. He cannot bid two hearts, because that would be a reverse promising some 17-20 points.

Instead, one no-trump is possible, but debatable with two low diamonds.

When North rebids two diamonds, which is forcing for one round, South continues with two no-trump, and North raises.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, one heart, three diamonds and two clubs. He can get two more winners from clubs, but might first lose four hearts and one club. What is the solution?

If declarer plays either his heart five or jack on East’s nine, he will win the third or fourth heart with his king.

Then he will have to turn to clubs, but here West will get in with his queen and cash the rest of the hearts for down one.

Instead of making the normal holdup play, South should do the abnormal by winning the second heart with his king. Then he crosses to dummy with a diamond and runs the club nine. Yes, the finesse loses, but West cannot cash his hearts, because declarer still has the jack-five.

Every time someone opens the door to a public building or presses an elevator button it’s as though that person has shaken hands with everyone who has been there before, so using hand sanitizer seems like good sense to me.

As to your relative not visiting you while you were hospitalized, the reason doctors are reducing the length of hospital stays and are performing so many outpatient procedures is to minimize the germs patients are exposed to in the hospital.

Shodeen introduces new collection of floor plans at Reston Ponds SHAW MEDIA

Located just south of Route 64 (North Avenue) and east of Route 23, Reston Ponds is a single-family home community that features an onsite elementary school, numerous parks and playgrounds, and no special service assessments, a news release said.

“Reston Ponds has been popular with families who are looking for a quiet, rural setting yet want to benefit from great schools and convenient commuter access,” said Anna Harmon, director of marketing and public relations for Shodeen Homes, in the release. “Many of our buyers work in DeKalb or the [Interstate 88] or Randall Road business corridors and have come to Reston Ponds to get the most for their home-buying dollar, yet be close to

Americans these days line up to buy iPhones, but half a century ago, they were flocking to see gleaming, futuristic prototypes of kitchen appliances. General Motors’ Kitchen of Tomorrow, part of a traveling exposition of the company’s products, featured an Ultrasonic Dishwasher and an Electro Recipe File.

Cooking technology was a matter of geopolitical importance. President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev argued about whose nation had better dishwashers during the president’s 1959 visit to Moscow.

Things that seem mundane now excited our parents and grandparents’ imaginations.

Their enthusiasm is understandable: rapid technological progress had made their lives easier, as new inventions eliminated hours and hours of menial labor. Many of them

Since the introduction of the microwave in the 1970s and 1980s, however, kitchens have changed little, despite the advertisers’ promises.

Industrial designers are still thinking about the future of the kitchen, but the contrasts between their prototypes and older ones show how much Americans’ outlook has darkened.

A case in point is IKEA’s Concept Kitchen 2025, which went on display earlier this year in Milan. The designers incorporated a 40 percent increase in the cost of food into their prototypes, along with constraints on energy, water and living space. They wonder whether the world will be able to sustain its eating habits, especially its taste for meat.

General Electric’s designers had similar concerns in mind when they unveiled a model kitchen two years ago. Instead of a world of leisure, these corporations are preparing for a hungry, thirsty, crowded future.

The Swedish furniture manufacturer collaborated with design students and the design firm IDEO to design a sink that separates wastewater for the sewer from gray water for reuse for washing dishes and irrigation. Their miniature refrigerators communicate with

American manufacturers previously assumed that women would be the ones using their prototypes in the kitchen, and women were

the targets of their advertising. “What we want to do is to make more easy the life of our housewives,” Nixon told Khrushchev, who denigrated “the capitalist attitude toward women.” IKEA’s design, by contrast, imagines the kitchen as a place that members of the family share, with parents working from home.

Refrigerators and dishwashers made women’s drudgery in the kitchen obsolete. Yet economists argue that instead of spending that extra time with their children or twirling around in dance shoes, as commercials from the period implied, women instead entered the workforce.

Economists debate how

technology will change the ways we spend our time in the future. Some say that technology is saving us more time than ever, even if the changes are hard to measure. Others argue that the most important inventions – the ones that, along with changes in the law and the culture, allowed women to work outside the home – are all in the past. On this view, our children’s lives will resemble our own more than our grandparents’ lives resembled our great-grandparents’, and the kitchens of 2025 might not look that different from those of 1985. And we won’t be well equipped to deal with the environmental challenges reflected in IKEA’s design.
