Elburn fire officials tout improved rating ELBURN – Insurance agent Justin Smitherman said the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District already had a good score on the “ISO ratings” scale before the department got the news late last year that its score improved.

Smitherman, who has an American Family Insurance office in the village, said the fire department now has moved to a rating of three – improved from four – for those who live in the village limits for the Insurance Service Office ratings. But he said those serviced by the department who live outside the village – for instance, Lily Lake residents – saw a more dramatic improvement that could lead to a boost in insurance savings.

Elburn fire officials said factors, such as number of hydrants, quality of equipment and public education can affect a score.

Fire Chief Kelly Callaghan noted the district has made improvements during the past few years – including the opening of a new station in Lily Lake – that helped improve the score. The department now operates three stations, with a new station on Route 38 scheduled to open

this year to replace a current station on North Street in Elburn.

Smitherman said, for instance, some Lily Lake residents could see the score improve from a rating of eight to a rating of four. Smitherman said the savings could be as much as 10 percent or 15 percent.

“It could equate to being a decent percentage,” he said, adding it’s difficult to determine how it would affect each resident because “there are so many factors that go into play.”

Callaghan and Assistant Chief Crag Hanson announced the news last week, saying they wanted to make sure residents had that information available if they had an opportunity to cut their insurance costs. They said the

new scores will go into effect April 1.

“It could be a big savings for a lot of the area,” Callaghan said.

“Some will see substantial savings,” Hanson said. “And some will see minor savings.”

Smitherman said he always has known Elburn to have a “solid” score for those in the village. But now “anybody in the area is going to be a six or below.” He added “six and below is really good.”

He added a score of three is similar to the city of Chicago’s score, which he said is a two.

“We have a very good fire department,” Smitherman said.

3 meetings canceled in Campton Hills as trustees, Smith clash

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – What if they gave a meeting and nobody came?

What if they gave three meetings and could not get a quorum?

The meetings get canceled, everyone shrugs and goes home – and that is what happened Tues- Patsy Smith day in Campton Hills.

A Committee of the Whole meeting was canceled because of the lack of a quorum.

A special meeting called by trustees was canceled because of lack of a quorum.

And the regular Village Board meeting was canceled

because of the lack of a quorum.

But what was different about these three canceled meetings was that enough trustees were present for a quorum, but not enough would participate.

This forced Village President Patsy Smith to close each one without calling any to order.

“Let the record reflect that [Trustee] Harry Blecker was here and chose not to participate,” Smith said as she closed the regular meeting. “Trustee [Laura] Andersen was here during the Committee of the Whole and the special meeting and chose not to participate.”

Other than Smith, the only other trustees present were Michael Millette and James Kopec.

Trustees Al Lenkaitis and Susan George were absent.

Andersen left the building before the regular meeting time.

Andersen said she would not cooperate because she wanted Smith to wait for Blecker, who was running late because of the snowy weather.

Andersen said she also objected to a Committee of the Whole meeting starting with a closed session, and was concerned with the legality of the regular meeting which had an agenda amended the same day as the meeting.

Smith said she inadvertently left out a motion for trustees to reconsider an ordinance she had vetoed providing for a new procedure for agenda preparation.

The Open Meetings Act calls for action items to be on an agenda 48 hours ahead of time, said attorney Julie Tappendorf, who represents the trustees.

Improvements to Batavia’s Houston Street moving ahead

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting continued to refine the proposed streetscape improvements for Houston Street.

Aldermen gave direction to staff to proceed with engineering and construction drawings.

“Now we really have to put pen to paper and look at costs,” Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen.

The city has made streetscape improvements to Wilson Street and River Street in recent years. The latest plans by landscape architect Altamanu call for an area where pedestrians and bicyclists would congregate. Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath has

said the plans feature proposed “islands” that would help slow down bicyclists.

The proposed improvements to Houston Street would cost an estimated $3.2 million. Officials said most of that cost is related to the reconstruction of Houston Street, and not streetscape improvements.

Sixth Ward Alderman Nick Cerone said he liked the design.

“But there’s no difference between the pedestrian path and bike path,” Cerone said.

Holm said that will have to be addressed, perhaps through signs or pavement markings.

“That’s something we will have to work through,” he said.

Aldermen also spoke about the need to protect the view of the Depot Museum as part of the project. As proposed, the project would begin later this year.

“There is no question about it,” Tappendorf said. “It is my recommendation that you should not get into a situation where you are not following state law … which has criminal penalties.”

Tappendorf said if no meeting is held, there is no violation of the Open Meetings Law. “If you are going to err on the side of anything, you are going to err on the side of complying with the Open Meetings Act,” Tappendorf said.

But Village Attorney William Braithwaite said he was trying to salvage a situation where trustees have the right to reconsider a veto at the next meeting.

“I would suggest that we proceed either with a first or second agenda, and there be an agreement that those [reconsideration] items can be on

the next agenda,” Braithwaite said. “By agreement, everyone waives the right to be heard at this meeting and have it postponed to the next meeting.”

Blecker, who arrived in time for the regular meeting, said he would not participate because that meeting would be illegal.

“I don’t want to be subject to a violation of the Open Meetings Act under any circumstances,” Blecker said.

Tappendorf said trustees can reconsider Smith’s veto at the next regular village board meeting, Feb. 17.

Braithwaite disagreed.

“Clearly, they could have had the meeting,” Braithwaite said. “And one of the suggestions I made – and the village president accepted – was that they would proceed with the first agenda. The objection was to the second agenda.”

Medical examiner: Heart attack contributed to death of John Gaines in December

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva resident John Gaines suffered a heart attack before he drowned in a creek in December at the Geneva Golf Club, according to a medical examiner who conducted an autopsy on Gaines.

Gaines, 74, the hus- John Gaines band of Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Jean Gaines, was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m.

The Kane County Chronicle filed a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain the report.

“Dr. Kalelkar advised [Geneva police] John had excessive amounts of water and fluid in his lungs,” the report states. “Dr. Kalelkar advised [Geneva police] John had suffered a heart attack before he drowned. Dr. Kalelkar ruled the cause of death to be drowning, with a heart attack as a contributory cause to John’s death.”

According to the report, Jean Gaines told police that her husband previously underwent heart surgery and had multiple stents in his arteries. Kalelkar is a forensic pathologist with the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

“We knew there was a heart event, and we knew there was water in his lungs,” Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said.

Jean and John Gaines both had lived near the golf course, which is at 831 South St. in Geneva. John Gaines’ daughter, Kristine Holtz, had said her father originally planned to go to the gym the day he died, but decided instead to go to the golf course to take advantage of the day’s nice weather. He later had planned to go to dinner and a movie with his wife, Holtz said.

They had been married since 1960, she said.

“He lived a full, happy life, full of love,” Holtz said Tuesday. “He was devoted to his family, as we were to him.”

GROWING SUCCESS Fox Valley Career Center offers a different kind of learning experience

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – During the early hours of a frosty winter morning, Rick Burchell opened a door to a room filled with plants for the horticultural program, smiling as he took in the view.

It was just a glimpse of what a school day can look like at the Fox Valley Career Center, located on the campus of Kaneland High School. The trip to the horticultural program was the first stop of a two-hour trip through the center provided

by Burchell, the center’s director.

In another area, there were vehicles waiting to be repaired. In one room, an instructor showed off a structure that uses solar power to operate a series of lights that lead to Kaneland’s football field. A different area featured a day care center that was full of activity, with toddlers being dropped off.

The Fox Valley Career Center has a mission of providing “quality career and technical training programs” and aims to “equip our students with the appropriate technical and academic skills needed to enter the workforce and/or post-secondary programs and to be successful.”

The center accepts students from Batavia, Burlington Cen-

tral, Geneva, Kaneland, St. Charles East, St. Charles North and West Aurora high schools.

Many students from outside the Kaneland district will spend part of the day at the career center but also will spend time at their home district school. The center utilizes an area inside of Kaneland High School and also makes use of a school building that previously was known as Kaneland Middle School. Burchell said the center opened in 1968.

As Burchell and Vernon Alexander, the center’s assistant director, spoke about the center and what it offers, they both displayed proud smiles.

They described a place at which students can earn college credits at a low cost. They spoke of success stories, where some who might struggle in a traditional classroom setting will thrive and find a solid career path. Alexander, who has been with the center since 1994, spoke of former students who “come back and pay it forward” by remaining involved and sharing the expertise they have learned in their chosen fields.

They talked about sacrifices, of students shifting schedules, waking up especially early or taking summer classes to be sure they can take advantage of the opportunities offered at the center. And if a student doesn’t enjoy a class,

“Part of learning is deciding what you don’t like,” he said, adding it’s ideal to receive that information before entering college.

On the trip through the center, Burchell opened many doors, and behind each was a story and a different scene.

There were teachers eager to talk about success in their classroom. There were students, busy at work.

Danielle Wukitsch, a computer technology instructor, talked about a project that involved students sending a tweet to make a pot of coffee.

“We have a lot of hands-on stuff,” she said. “There are a lot of projects.”

Jay Markuson, an electrician and small engines instructor, beamed as he showed the structure that helps light the path to the football field.

He said students will leave

knowing how to do the job.

“The kids are here because they want to be here,” Markuson said. “It’s a different mindset. … These are life lessons.”

In another class, Jennifer Charles, a law enforcement instructor, said students are surprised to learn about all of the possibilities for a career in the field. They might come in thinking they could become police officers, but there are careers with the state police, SWAT teams, U.S. marshals and more.

Burchell showed off the fire training area, which is outside and fenced in. There are burned-out vehicles used for practice. He said all of the equipment is donated.

In classes for fire training and emergency medical technician training, students were working with “patients” that actually were dummies set up for practice.

Shaw, a student in the class, called it a challenge, saying many students “don’t make it,” adding those in the class work hard at it. Others in the class, Montgomery resident Alexander Ochoa and St. Charles North student Nick Morici, said they intend to be firefighters and paramedics.

“It’s been what I thought it would be,” Morici said. “It’s a good experience.”

In another class, aspiring nurses listened to instruction in one part of a large classroom. In the other part, there were beds set up for training.

Gabby Englin, a student from Batavia, said it’s a more “hands-on” experience than traditional high school classes. Kaneland student Elle Tattoni, said there is an additional sense of responsibility.

“It’s different from high school,” Tattoni said. “It shows you how it’s going to be in college.”

Lyle Erickson, company president and fisheries biologist, explained the previous location was too small, requiring a move to its current 10,000-square-foot space.

“We grew to the point where we needed more room.

It wasn’t going to work,” Erickson said. “We just needed a bigger space.”

The company does lake

and pond management services, he said, which is aquatic weed control and organic sediment reduction.

“We use activated bacteria and enzymes [to] decompose your organic sediments,” Erickson said. “That will also help break down goose poop in ponds.”

The larger space also accommodates aerators, which many ponds and lakes use until the winter. Erickson said his company takes them out, stores them, prepares them for the next season then reinstalls them.

“We use biology and mechanical means to control

organics. The aerator keeps the oxygen level higher, so ... the organics can decompose,” Erickson said. “Organics will break down over time, sometimes taking years. This is speeding up the process.”

Waiting years for nature to take its course results in a body of water that will smell bad and lose depth as sediments accumulate at the bottom.

“All ponds are designed to do that,” he said. “We’re trying to speed up the process of decomposition to keep the pond from getting shallower.”

Erickson said he has been

doing this type of work for 30 years and always is learning something new.

“Just about the time I think I know everything, Mother Nature throws another thing at me,” Erickson said. “Basically, she’s in charge. No matter how much man thinks they are in charge, Mother Nature is the ultimate boss.”

For example, one of the services the company provides is controlling invasive weed species in lakes and ponds. Two of the biggest invasive species are the Eurasian watermilfoil and the curly-leaf pondweed, he said.

The watermilfoil can grow up to 6 inches in a day, spreading a canopy of leaves that shades out desirable plants and takes over bodies of water, he said.

Curly-leaf is a European species that is just as bad, even surviving right under ice, he said.

“It’s the first plant you see after the ice melts,” Erickson said. “It just kind of laughs at you.”

Erickson said he welcomed the relocation to Elburn.

“I’m a country boy,” Erickson said. “The further I can get away from the big city, the better.”

Tickets on sale for DuKane ABATE’s annual comedy showcase ST. CHARLES – The DuKane Chapter of ABATE Illinois is ready to help the community laugh into spring with its annual comedy showcase.

“It’s open to everybody,” events coordinator Wally Elliott said. “Anybody that likes comedy shows – that’s who we’re targeting.”

Set for Feb. 21, the Laugh into Spring Comedy Showcase will start at 7 p.m. with live music, and the comedy portion is planned for 8 to 10 p.m., Elliott said.

Parents should use their best judgment about bringing children to the event, Elliott said, noting the material should be appropriate for older teens.

“We’re looking forward to the venue,” Elliott said, noting past venues have included the now-demolished VFW in St. Charles, the American Legion in West Chicago and the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.

He said attendees also may bring nonperishable food, which will be donated to Mutual Ground and St. Vincent’s Food Pantry.

Blackberry Township tries again for road referendum proved, said Rod Feece, the township’s highway commissioner.

The township’s previous road referendum in 2013 failed with 623 voting against the referendum, and 300 voting for it, according to election results on the Kane County Clerk’s website.

Feece said he can understand people are strapped for money in today’s economy, but sources of funding are limited for the highway district.

“I feel that this is the only way I can go to try and get our roads in Blackberry Township in better shape,” Feece said.

Sugar Grove-based Engineering Enterprises is completing a detailed evaluation of the district’s 51 miles of

paved road. The report, which Feece expects to have by Friday, will include a rating of all the roads, as well as what repairs are suggested and deemed necessary.

Feece said he plans to share the results of the report on Tuesday at the Blackberry Township meeting. The report also will be a topic of discussion at to-be-scheduled forums in the township, Feece said.

Feece said the district will continue to patch roads if the referendum fails, but over time, the roads will become substandard.

The township in 2014 used its funding to patch a major portion of South Mill Creek Drive, as well as other areas in the district, Feece said.

The referendum question, which will be on the ballot for the April 7 election, asks residents whether the limiting tax rate for the township road district shall be increased from 18.5 cents per $100 of equalized assessed valuation to 32.5 cents.

The sentence was part of a plea bargain approved by Kane County Judge James Hallock. Joslin also must

County officials warn of solicitations from energy companies KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com Residents in Big Rock Township recently have experienced door-to-door solicitations from energy companies, prompting Kane County to remind residents it has not yet selected a supplier for its electrical power aggregation program, according to a coun-

ty news release.

Any door-to-door solicitation by any electrical supplier is not associated with the county’s aggregation program, the release states.

The county is in the process of hiring Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Collaborative as the utility consultant to lead it in seeking a lower electric rate for

unincorporated residents.

According to the release, it will be at least two to three months before NIMEC will initiate the bidding process for electric rates. Kane County at that time will have the option not to proceed with the program if bids aren’t lower than ComEd’s current rate.

Donald A. Zedonis, age 83, of St. Charles, peacefully passed away surrounded by family, on Monday, February 2, 2015, in St. Charles, Illinois.

He was born July 11, 1931, at home in St. Charles, the son of the late Anton and Veronica Zedonis.

Donald was a 1949 graduate of St. Charles high school and IIT in Chicago. He was employed by Riverbank Laboratories in Geneva for 28 years as an acoustical engineer, and Fermilab in Batavia for 14 years. He also was a registered Real Estate Agent before his retirement in 1993.

He was a member of ASTM, active in Scouting and in various Camera Clubs. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Crane Road Church, and St. Clare of Assisi Church in Surprise, AZ. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann (Carr); his children, Jeffrey (Dianne), David (Lisa), Julie, Paul (Robin), Karen; and his grandchildren, Christine and Justin Zedonis.

Additionally, McMahon said, the office conducted two no-refusal weekends to crack down on drunken driving: on March 15 to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day and Nov. 26 to coincide with Thanksgiving.

Sixteen police agencies participated in both dates, and 17 drivers were charged, according to the report.

The office’s most recent no-refusal event occurred last weekend, McMahon said, adding some arrests were made despite the snowstorm.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Looking at the characteristics of the county’s murder cases in the past four years is both distressing and reassuring, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

In 11 of the 15 cases, he said, the victim had a domestic relationship with the defendant at some point.

McMahon said that correlation is distressing because it shows the relationships can be tragic for those involved.

But, he said, it is reassuring because it shows Kane County is a safe place to live and work and that the rate of random violent crime is extremely low.

McMahon presented this information, along with other highlights from the 2014 annual report, to reporters during his monthly meeting with the media Tuesday.

In 2014, the report shows,

assistant state’s attorneys screened more than 2,600 investigations from more than three dozen police agencies to determine if felony charges were appropriate.

More than half of the 2,623 felony calls were from the Aurora and Elgin police departments, according to the report.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office had 228; St. Charles police had 128; Batavia police had 119; North Aurora police had 46; Geneva police had 33; Elburn police had 17; Sugar Grove police had 15; Campton Hills police had seven; Kane County Forest Preserve police had four; and Maple Park police had three.

Traffic, misdemeanor and driving under the influence cases represented the largest number of the office’s criminal cases in 2014, McMahon said. According to the report, 2014 had 5,148 new misdemeanor files, down by 4.8 percent from 2013.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR BEACONS OF HOPE To the Editor: It has been a difficult past year for Americans. Our economy continued to recover, but at a pace too slow to relieve the burden placed on hard-working families. Our new health care laws have continued to expand and make our country unattractive to businesses.

Belligerent Russia, North Korea and Iran continue to threaten free society, while the administration did nothing. But I see beacons of hope on the horizon.

Americans voted for a change.

Republicans now have both houses of Congress – and just in time. With the recession in our wake, the U.S. needs leaders who will work hard to put Americans back to work and keep the economy growing.

The Keystone pipeline bill is one such beacon of hope. More jobs, cheaper energy and a decreased reliance on foreign oil makes a lot of sense – but don’t take my word for it, ask OPEC.

When Congress nearly passed the KXL bill last year, OPEC panicked. An energy independent North America so seriously threatens their bottom line that OPEC seems willing to cut profits and harm their member states in an effort to drive North American oil back into the ground.

More reasons for optimism – the Republican-led House has overseen tremendous bipartisan efforts to pass the Hire More Heroes Act and legislation that would wrestle the 40-hour work week back from the Affordable Care Act. The ACA’s 30-hour rule disadvantages America’s most vulnerable workers, such as women, low-wage and unskilled laborers. All of these initiatives were supported by my own congressman, Peter Roskam, and even by suburban Democrats like Dan Lipinski. Bipartisan bills like these should restore America’s hope for 2015.

Was January’s volatility a blip or a harbinger?

By MOHAMED EL–ERIAN Bloomberg News January was an unusual and exciting month for financial markets.

Volatility returned to the equity markets. To use a rather unsophisticated measure, almost three-quarters of the trading days showed moves of more than 100 points in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Yields on higher quality government bonds plummeted; 10-year Treasuries ended the month at 1.64 percent, and Germany’s 10-year rate touched a record low of 0.298 percent.

Meanwhile, the foreign exchange markets were marked not only by notable fluctuations in currency values but also by changes

in exchange rate systems for stability-obsessed countries such as Singapore and Switzerland.

Many of these developments reflect the effect of “divergence” – that is, large and persistent deviations among systemically important countries when it comes to economic performance and monetary policy prospects. In the absence of comprehensive policy responses and limits on interest-rate differentials, this variance continued to place an enormous burden on currencies, forcing them to essentially become the major shock absorbers. And, as history has shown us, movements in the foreign exchange markets – especially large ones – have consequences for other

markets.

Developments in the foreign exchange markets have already spilled over. In the latest earnings season, several companies cited currency movements as powerful negative forces.

Meanwhile, as many international stock market investors left their currency exposures unhedged, it was inevitable that foreign exchange losses would translate into negative developments in equity funds.

Adverse contagion was also generated by the sharp movement in oil prices, as the market continued to adjust to a fundamental change in supply conditions.

This heightened sense of instability was compounded by political and geopolitical

events. The more instability, the greater the threat to the low volatility economic and market environments engineered by central banks, which have played an important role in boosting asset prices, accelerating financial healing and buying time for politicians to get their act together and come up with comprehensive and lasting policy approaches.

The most critical question about the markets’ behavior in January is not “why?” but “so what?” And answering that question could well be consequential for markets, which had benefited enormously from central bank activism intended to create the conditions for a combination of accelerated private sector healing and a more compre-

hensive policy response from governments.

Although the internal healing is occurring, progress on the policy front has been frustratingly slow in most advanced countries.

If they continue to delay progress toward a more comprehensive policy approach, the world will experience an increase in the risk of financial instability that would then undermine economic performance and render policy management even more complex. That, in turn, would make the subsequent recovery even more difficult.

Déjà vu for Spartans, Royals Despite closer spread, St. Francis beats SCC foe again

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – Rosary girls basketball coach Jessie Terrell put a positive spin on her team’s 46-32 loss to St. Francis in a Suburban Christian Conference game Tuesday night.

It was the Royals’ second loss to the Spartans in four days. St. Francis also topped the team, 56-26, on Saturday in Wheaton.

“We just played them on Saturday and the score was 56-26, so we actually made a 16-point swing,” Terrell said.

“We scored six more points, and we held them to 10 less points, so we will take that.”

The game started out slowly. The teams made more free throws – five – than baskets – three – in the first eight minutes.

The Spartans (16-8, 3-2 SCC) sank their first basket of the

game, a 3-pointer by Sloane Baumgartner (11 points), in the closing seconds of the first quarter. The trey gave St. Francis an 8-6 lead.

Rosary (8-9, 1-4) also held the Spartans to one basket in the fourth quarter, but St. Francis more than made up for that drought in the second and third quarters, having a 24-15 lead at halftime and extending it to a 44-24 advantage after three quarters.

“We are happy with our defense, for the most part,” Terrell said. “There are a couple of quarters we gave up more than we wanted.”

Rosary’s offense had trouble scoring, playing without two of its top scorers.

“As you can see, we are struggling to score,” Terrell said. “We are down two starters. Megan Conlin, who is our leading scorer and rebounder, is out with a foot injury,

and we’re not sure when she’ll come back. The other one is Taylor Drozdowski, and she is our third-top scorer.”

The Royals came close to losing a third starter in the first quarter. Senior guard Quincy Kellett injured the index finger on her right hand.

After taping the digit, she returned to the court.

“We’re not exactly sure of the diagnosis, whether it is jammed or broken,” Terrell said. “But she’s one tough kid.”

“It’s always tough to come and play here because they are always a well-prepared team,” Spartans coach Mike Phillips said. “Overall, I was pleased with our effort. I thought we played a good team game.”

Netzley said a poster featuring former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter in the locker room provided the visitors some halftime motivation.

“We went into halftime, we were all disappointed in ourselves, and our coach read us a quote from Derek Jeter that was in the locker room that said not to walk off the court feeling like you didn’t give your full effort,” Netzley said. “And so we just gave our full effort in the second half.”

Soris scored all 10 of her points in the second half for the Chargers while Alfaro (nine points) also saved all of her scoring for the second half. ACC, playing its senior night, led at the intermission, 16-13.

The win allowed Wheaton Academy to sweep the regular-season series after a 10-point win in West Chicago earlier in the season.

“It’s a big win for us, especially to beat a team twice in conference that’s the caliber of team that ACC is,” Mitchell said.

AURORA – Missed layups and missed free throws agitated Wheaton Academy guard Jamie Netzley in the early stages of Tuesday’s girls basketball matchup at Aurora Central Catholic.

Come the second half, Netzley made it clear what caliber of player she truly is.

Netzley sizzled throughout the second half, almost single-handedly carrying the Warriors to a 41-39, Metro Suburban West victory.

The left-handed junior guard scored 22 of her 29 points after the break and added a few steals defensively that swung the game’s momentum.

“I kind of just came to the second half with a new mind, a new memory, just wipe off

the first half and shoot with confidence,” Netzley said.

“The team just talked about at halftime just being confident in everything we do, and that’ll win the game for us.

So I just took some shots, and they went in.”

Netzley had 12 of Wheaton Academy’s 14 points during the third quarter, all but an Emily Renn jumper in the closing seconds that put the Warriors ahead, 27-26, entering the final quarter.

The South Elgin resident continued her scoring bonanza to open the fourth quarter, scoring her team’s first three baskets – two driving layups and a step-back jumper – to put the Warriors up, 33-29.

ACC coach Mark Fitzgerald called Netzley “a money player.”

“No disrespect to the rest of the team, but she beat us by

herself tonight,” Fitzgerald said. “We gave up 29 points [to her]. We purposely put in a defense and it worked for a while, but the kid’s got outside, inside. When you don’t get your hands up and close out on her, she’s going to make those.”

Wheaton Academy (13-7, 3-5 Metro Suburban West) built its lead to 41-34 before a late Chargers flurry spiced up the final minJamie ute.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Cougars hitting coach Vince Harrison described the Arizona Diamondbacks prospects he’ll work with in 2015 in four words.

“Young, fun, energetic, athletic,” Harrison said.

Harrison, 35, just as easily could have been talking about his 27-year-old brother, Josh, an All-Star utilityman with the Pittsburgh Pirates last season.

The Cubs drafted Josh Harrison in the sixth round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. A second baseman, third baseman and corner outfielder, Harrison eventually ascended to Class-A Peoria that season.

Vince Harrison, who never climbed above Double-A as a second baseman and third baseman with multiple organizations, since had shifted to Schaumburg of the independent Northwest League.

He recalls watching Peoria’s 2008 season finale in Geneva, then driving separately and meeting his brother at home in suburban Cincinnati.

These days, the Harrisons “hit together probably two,

three times a week,” Vince Harrison said.

In July 2009, the Cubs traded Josh Harrison to the Pirates as part of a deal that brought left-handers Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow to Chicago.

The brothers are optimistic they’ll be able to meet for an in-season rendezvous in 2015.

“We’ve already matched up the dates. There’s only like one day that we’ll be able to meet,” Vince Harrison said.

“I think it’s, like, June 17, and they’re playing the [White] Sox. Any other time, our schedules didn’t quite match up. But we’ll talk. We’ll figure out a way.”

Bochtler still recalls the novelty of snowed-out game in Wausau in May of that season.

“I remember going, ‘What are we doing? This is crazy,’ ” he said. “Back on the team bus, and everybody watched a movie.”

Better to keep his neck steady than to constantly crane it at the Timbers’ home park.

“A short center field with the sun right in your eyes,” Bochtler said. “It was a tough place to pitch, but if you got it at the right time it was an easy place to pitch because no one could see anything.”

Kaneland’s defense-first strategy nearly yielded a remarkable turnaround last week.

The Knights, who lost, 49-20, at Sycamore in early December, led the Spartans entering the fourth quarter of the teams’ Jan. 27 game in Maple Park.

Sycamore’s 18-7 spurt in the fourth quarter ultimately sank Kaneland, but the Knights didn’t sulk for long after the game.

“If one person starts going, we all get going, and that’s what we need,” senior forward Ally Van Bogaert said. “You always need a leader at that point.”

Added Knights coach Ernie Colombe: “We did a lot more good things. ... I’m really proud of our effort. I feel like if we can get this kind of effort, we’re going to be tough to beat.”

With postseason seeds and schedules set to be released Friday, Kaneland soon will learn when it potentially could have to dial up a similar game plan against the Spartans.

Sycamore hosts a six-team regional in Class 3A, and if last week’s game proved one thing, it’s that the Spartans should be just as leery of Kaneland as presumptive top seed Burlington Central, which avenged last season’s state semifinal loss to Montini over the weekend.

“I thought Kaneland played really, really well. … They had a lot of people step up and play some pretty good basketball,” Sycamore coach Brett Goff said. “So it took everything that we had to persevere in that fourth quarter.”

After a strong outing for the Saints at the state tournament over the weekend, he since has received a number of overtures. Strauss, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley about his recent run.

Here’s an edited transcript of the conversation:

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau was defending his defense after practice Tuesday, trying to ease concerns about the way the team is playing on that end of the floor.

His overall message is it isn’t as bad as it might seem.

The Bulls rank 18th in the NBA in scoring defense, giving up an average of 99.9 points a game.

A game in Houston isn’t exactly what the doctor ordered.

The Rockets rank seventh in scoring at 102.7 points A game and have guard James Harden, the league’s leading scorer (27 ppg.) and an MVP candidate through the first half of the season.

But Thibodeau cautions that allowing high point totals might reflect the pace at which the Bulls have been playing.

When they push offensively and look to score earlier in the shot clock, that means more possessions – and points – for both teams.

Thibodeau said he looks more at efficiency on possessions, including the ability to close out on 3-pointers. That will be important tonight – the Rockets take more 3-point shots than anybody in the

“It’s a very dangerous team,” Thibodeau said. “We know they can put a lot of points up on the board. You can’t let your guard down.

Your defense has to be tied together.”

Much of that is the responsibility of big men Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah. Noah, last season’s Defensive Player of the Year, always has been adept on that end. But working alongside Gasol, another player his size, means somewhat of an adjustment.

Protecting the rim is especially paramount against a guy such as Harden, who gets to the basket.

“It’s always a work in progress,” Thibodeau said. “You got two 7-footers. They’ve got to play to their strengths.”

Despite the high point totals, Thibodeau said he’s happy with the Bulls’ ability to contest shots.

ponents an adjusted fieldgoal percentage of 47.7, fourth in the league. Adjusted field goal percentage is the shooting metric now more commonly used in the NBA because it accounts for the difference between two-point and 3-point attempts.

Still, the Bulls can’t use stats to hide from their transition defense, which lacked in particular in losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns over the past two games.

“It’s pretty obvious when you look at the numbers,” Noah said. “There’s no lying.

Transition defense has definitely been a problem, but we’re more than capable.”

Note: There was talk Tuesday that injured Bulls starter Mike Dunleavy could be shut down until after the All-Star break. Dunleavy injured his right ankle Jan. 1.

He hasn’t played since, indicating there are a number of problems, including a bone bruise.

“That may be what ends up happening,” he said. “But I hope not. I want to play – whether that’s the game before the All-Star break, that’s this weekend or whatever. I want to play as soon as I can without risking further damage.”

New blood-thinning drugs may be used in place of warfarin Dear Doctor K: I have atrial fibrillation. For years I took warfarin.

Last year I switched to Pradaxa.

Now I hear Pradaxa may not be as safe as my doctor said. What can you tell me about this?

Dear Reader: Atrial fibrillation is a heart rhythm disorder that causes a rapid and irregular heartbeat.

It increases the risk of stroke. For decades, the best way to prevent stroke from atrial fibrillation was by taking a blood thinner called warfarin (Coumadin).

In recent years, a group of new blood thinners have become available in the United States. One is dabigatran (Pradaxa). The others are rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and apixaban (Eliquis). How do they compare to warfarin?

Warfarin has the advantage of having been around for many decades; we know its benefits and risks. It is inexpensive and needs to be taken just once a day. One disadvantage is that warfarin requires regular blood tests to determine if it is thinning the blood too much (increasing the risk of bleeding) or too little (increasing the risk of complications from blood clots).

While there are some contradictory study results published, here’s my reading of the current evidence on the three drugs com-

Have lower rates of major bleeding (with the possible exception of dabigatran and gut hemorrhage); 3. Have lower rates of death; 4. Are less likely to be affected by what you eat, or to have negative interactions with other medicines that you take.

On the other hand, the new drugs: 1. Have not been tested for as many years, on as many people, and may therefore have risks that are not yet apparent; 2. Require taking a pill twice a day (except for rivaroxaban); 3. Need dose adjustments in people with chronic kidney disease; 4. Do not have a rapid antidote if they should cause major bleeding.

You ask about the new risks attributed to Pradaxa. You may be referring to a recent study of 9,400 men and women with atrial fibril-

lation. Over one year, 9 percent of people taking dabigatran experienced major bleeding, compared with 6 percent of people taking warfarin. Bleeding in the stomach and intestines was slightly higher among dabigatran users in this study, but not in other studies.

Bleeding in the head, a more serious problem, was lower among dabigatran users, as has been true in most other studies.

I keep patients on warfarin when they: • Have been on the drug for many years; • Have required a stable dose and blood test monitoring only every three to four months; • Have not had any complications; • Do not want to pay the cost of the newer medicine or take a medicine twice daily.

Otherwise, I’m generally switching my patients on warfarin to the newer drugs. I do this with some concern, because it is possible that adverse effects of the newer drugs may become apparent with more use.

I have never smoked tobacco and do not consume alcohol, but my husband and I enjoy sharing a marijuana cigarette three or four times a week. That is our only vice. We exercise regularly and eat properly. I am not addicted to marijuana and could stop immediately, but I don’t want to unless you can medically show me that smoking marijuana on a semi-regular basis is a health hazard to our unborn child.

I really believe that marijuana should be legalized. I do believe that cocaine use during pregnancy could harm the unborn child, but not the use of marijuana.

There is a big difference between the two.

An active chemical in marijuana may somehow slow the growth of the unborn baby. Since the drug can remain in the blood system for a month, a single marijuana cigarette may produce a prolonged exposure to the fetus.

You are correct when you insinuate that cocaine is more harmful to the development of an unborn baby than marijuana, but as Dr. Zuckerman’s study shows, the use of marijuana during pregnancy can cause damage to the

You owe it to your unborn child to have the baby be as healthy as possible at birth. Why take a chance that this might not happen if you continue sharing a marijuana cigarette with your husband?

That is an interesting hypothesis, one that surely would not meet with universal approval.

In bridge, talented players know when to apply pressure to their opponents, pushing them into mistakes or causing them to miss their ideal contracts.

In this deal from a social game, what would you have bid with that South hand at unfavorable vulnerability after your partner passed and your right-hand opponent opened one spade?

Most players are more cautious when vulnerable. However, opponents will assume you are being sane, not crazy, at those colors. You can occasionally escape unscathed from a tight corner.

When this deal was originally played, South intervened with four hearts. What should have happened then?

At the table, an inexperienced West passed. North passed also, of course, and so did East, feeling trapped. West, who knew his side had at least game values, should have doubled. This would have announced sufficient strength to act and no better call available.

Then East would probably not have passed, although best defense (spade to the ace, diamond to the ace, diamond ruff, club ace and two later trump tricks) would have defeated four hearts by three tricks for plus 800. East would have rebid four spades or five clubs, both of which he surely would have made.

This is a part-time position consisting of 16 hours per week, and reports directly to the Chief of Police. This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of functions that support the records management and administrative obligations of the police department.

The duties of a Police Records Specialist III may include, data entry, receiving telephone calls and citizen visits concerning information requests and complaints, accepting payments of fines and fees, communicating with other law enforcement agencies, preparing court related documents, and other tasks as assigned.

Desired qualifications include, but are not limited to graduation from high school or equivalent with two (2) years of law enforcement records experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish successful working relationships; ability to work under pressure and/or with frequent interruptions; ability to work with angry or difficult customers. Experience with New World Systems Records Management program, Municipal Software, Inc. (MSI), and GovPayNet are a plus.
