SHUFFLING IN THE SNOW Runners in Geneva 5K race fight through cold, ice

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Nature threw some challenges at Batavia High School sophomore Megan DalSanto on Sunday as she participated in the Geneva Park District’s fourth annual Super Bowl Shuffle 5K. “Some hills were hard to get up because of the snow and ice,” she said. “The trails were a little slippery, but they did a good job getting most of the snow off.”

DalSanto was one of more than 500 participants in the race, which took runners around Peck Farm Park in Geneva. Cold weather greeted her after Saturday’s snowfall, but DalSanto said she was prepared.

“I wore three layers of clothing,” she said. “It wasn’t too cold.”

Despite less-than-ideal conditions, DalSanto said she finished the race in 27 minutes, 30 seconds, beating last year’s time of 33 minutes.

“I’m training with my brother to do a marathon,” she said.

Watching proudly was her mother, Kim DalSanto.

“I’ve been with her at every single run,” she said.

“I’m very proud of her when she crosses the finish line, no matter what her time is.”

Laura Newman and her husband, Steve, of Batavia, were stretching their legs after the race.

“I was really excited to get back to running,” Laura Newman said. “This is my first time running in

two years. I’ve had a couple of foot injuries. I did better than I thought I would, just under 33 minutes.”

Steve Newman was prepared for the cold temperatures, dressing in a thermal shirt and a sweatshirt.

“As long as you dressed right, you didn’t feel the cold,” he said. “They make such good gear now.”

Both of them were ready to relax a little at the postrace celebration at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center.

“Bring on the nachos,” Steve Newman said.

Batavia OKs deal Aldermen support 2 a.m. for intersection option for early closers improvements ST. CHARLES

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Bars that choose to stay open until midnight or 1 a.m. under the city’s new late-night permit rules won’t be totally shut out of a 2 a.m. closing.

St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina on Monday presented the Government Services Committee with a proposal to allow liquor licensees who close at midnight or 1 a.m. an opportunity to – on occasion – stay open until 2 a.m.

Aldermen welcomed the idea and supported such parameters as limiting the later closing to four events per

business per year and a $100 fee.

They also agreed that the applications should be submitted 45 days in advance of the scheduled date to provide adequate time for review.

The committee directed staff to draft an ordinance they can review and critique.

Rogina said the proposed ordinance could come before the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission and City Council as early as Feb. 18.

In other news, resident Carol Bayer spoke against a proposed Dunkin’ Donuts on East Main Street because it would be in direct compe-

tition with nearby Bosa Donuts.

She said Dunkin’ Donuts has multiple shops in the area.

“I became alarmed for the small business owner,” Bayer said, noting the owners have three children.

Rogina said the city abides by all building codes and ordinances and supports the opportunity for competition.

He invited Bayer to speak at tonight’s Plan Commission meeting. The agenda includes the proposed Dunkin’ Donuts, which is requesting a drive-thru stacking reduction.

BATAVIA – Improvements are on tap for the intersection of Main Street and Deerpath Road.

Batavia aldermen Monday approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Kane County Division of Transportation for intersection improvements at Main Street and Deerpath Road.

The Kane/Kendall Council of Mayors Transportation Committee in January approved the project to be included in the Surface Transportation Program for funding.

The overall STP program will be voted on by the Kane/ Kendall Council of Mayors on Feb. 16.

Under STP funding rules, phase 1 and 2 engineering is 100 percent funded locally; construction and construction engineering is 75 percent federally funded and 25 percent locally funded.

The STP grant award amount is $2,120,250.

“The STP application was submitted as a roundabout, but with the understanding that the project would be evaluated for either a traffic signal or a roundabout,” Batavia city engineer Noel Basquin

said in a memo to aldermen.

“Submitting the STP grant as a roundabout allowed the city and Kane County to receive the necessary funds to construct a roundabout if that is the agreed improvements for the intersection by both Batavia’s City Council and the Kane County Board.”

City staff will now proceed with the consultant selection process, and expects to bring a recommendation to the Batavia City Council in March.

In other business, aldermen approved the Illinois Department of Transportation construction engineering services agreement for federal participation for the Safe Routes to School projects at Alice Gustafson Elementary School, H.C. Storm Elementary School and Rotolo Middle School.

The project includes the installation of sidewalk improvements to provide a safe route for students to travel to each of these schools. This also includes the installation of a pedestrian bridge along Hart Road.

Aldermen approved an agreement with HR Green, Inc. not to exceed $45,096.46.

The agreement is subject to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s review and approval.

Centuries of military history presented at Pheasant Run

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Roman swords, Civil War muskets, helmets and boots from World Wars I and II all came together Saturday, part of the threeday Military History Fest at Pheasant Run in St. Charles.

Director Mike Bollow said between vendors and the public, about 1,500 people attended. The oldest re-enactments date from Roman times, and the most recent is the Gulf War, he said.

“What’s nice about this event is, it’s the only time all re-enactors from various time periods come together,” Bollow said. “Because every traditional re-enactment is only Colonial, or only World War II or only Civil War. We see that the things that are similar between our hobbies are actually greater than the things that divide us.”

In addition to vendors selling period garb and artifacts spanning centuries of human conflict, enthusiasts and re-enactors in painstakingly accurate, detailed uniforms were everywhere – a kind of wartime see and be seen event.

Perhaps the most historically recognizable was President Abraham Lincoln, actually Max Daniels, a re-enactor and educator from Wheaton.

“I think there are several ways of learning history, obviously,” Daniels said.

“Through textbooks, through visuals. But I think another alternative way is visualization by personalization. If you can actually talk to the person – I think that is also a very good way to learn. What my wife and I do, as living historians, is go to schools and let the children learn by talking to the persons that we represent.”

Susan Spencer of Ontario, Canada, wore the blue dress uniform of a Canadian Nursing Sister serving in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in World War I. “They were not allowed on the battlefield,” Spencer said.

“They were support to the doctors who were on the battlefield, the stretcher-bearers and medics.”

the feathered hat and scored woolens of a 16th century landsknechte – German for servant or knight of the land who fought in wars from 1475 and 1535.

“They were soldiers who would be raised by a local barony or duchy, they would fight for a season and then they would go back to their lives, whether they were peasants, or millers or local townspeople,” Shellenbean said. “They would muster in early in the spring and spend a month or two months training before going out and fighting. They would be fighting either specific wars, or sometimes they would be hired out to other duchies or other countries to fight on their behalf.”

The clothing was predominantly wool and linen, first cut to allow soldiers to move more easily while fighting, then becoming a style so the bottom layers of color would show through the top layers, he said.

Generally, they fought with a 14-foot to 20-foot spear called a pike used against cavalry.

“They would fight in blocks of 300 to 400 men with these huge spears, and they were like a moving pointy wall – like a fortress on the battlefield,” Shellenbean said.

“Horses would charge and get drilled. Pretty messy stuff.”

“I am at this event to portray a French revolutionary, a Napoleonic soldier of Napoleon’s Grand Army,” Shaw said.

Shaw said he is writing a series that takes place in 1806 in the Fourth Coalition where the French defeated the Prussians.

“Napoleonic history has always interested me,” Shaw said. “And since I’m writing it, I felt I had to become a soldier of this era to get the feel for it. My character does infantry and cavalry. I have a friend who says one of these days, he’ll let me ride a horse and get that feeling, as well.”

When llamas decide to attack The following is a simplified fact scenario.

On four occasions, a plaintiff cared for animals on a defendant’s family farm. The defendant’s farm had chickens, turkeys, horses and llamas. The defendant showed the plaintiff how to care for the farm animals.

When the plaintiff took care of the farm animals, a llama was territorial of the barn. It allegedly would charge the plaintiff when he approached the barn, pushed the plaintiff into the barn walls while he cleaned the barn, spit on the plaintiff, and once reared and gave the plaintiff a bloody nose.

One summer, the plaintiff and the defendant agreed that the plaintiff could have a dog if he cared for the defendant’s family farm for a week while the defendant was away. The plaintiff asked the defendant whether the llama would be locked in a stall; the defendant ultimately decided the animal would not be locked up.

While the plaintiff took care of the defendant’s farm, he noticed the llama roaming around the barn’s hallway.

The plaintiff went around the animal and cleaned the stalls. About 15 minutes later, the llama stared to come near. The plaintiff tried to walk around it, but it reared and cornered the plaintiff against a back wall.

Against the back wall was a half-wall separating a stall. The plaintiff tried to jump over the half-wall to safety.

However, the llama got its head between the plaintiff’s legs while the plaintiff jumped and flipped the plaintiff. The plaintiff fell and thought he had dislocated his arm. However, the stall safely divided the plaintiff and llama, and the plaintiff eventually escaped the barn.

IN YOUR COURT Anthony Scifo The plaintiff then sued the defendant for his injuries. The defendant countered with the legal affirmative defense of “primary implied assumption of risk.” This affirmative defense is applicable when parties contract with each other; it excuses the defendant from a legal duty to the plaintiff when the plaintiff implicitly consents to encounter an inherent and known risk.

The court found a contract existed between the parties, and the plaintiff assumed the risk the llama would attack because he knew it was loose before entering the barn, and he knew from past experiences that the animal was aggressive toward him.

The scenario is derived from the case Edwards v. Lombardi, 2013 IL (3d) 120518.

A 2004 Mercedes-Benz CL500 was vandalized sometime between 2 p.m. Thursday and 12:30 a.m. Friday at Rook-

Born to Sonja Myrtle and Francis Ulrich Carlborg in Evanston, on Nov. 23, 1928, Frank graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1946, received a B.A. in mathematics from Ripon College (1950), a master’s in mathematics from the University of Illinois (1954), and his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Chicago in 1964. A veteran of the Korean War, he was posted at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala. After his marriage to Deane Anne Houlahan in 1955, the couple renovated a dilapidated log cabin near Stillman Valley, while he taught mathematics at Rockford College. Moving to St. Charles in 1964, he authored a textbook, “Introduction to Statistics,” and launched a consulting practice as a statistician specializing in risk assessment for food additives and pesticides.

Some of Frank’s happiest memories were of his boyhood

summers in Lake Geneva, Wis. He was a lifelong athlete who enjoyed tennis and spent many happy hours cycling country roads and bike trails with his wife and friends. An avid reader of history, natural science and current affairs, he also loved the theater and the high lonesome melodies of bluegrass music.

A man of sterling integrity, he valued his family, friends and home in the Fox River Valley above all else.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Deane Anne Houlahan Carlborg; his children, Sonja Deane Carlborg of Front Royal, Va., Anne Frances McCormack of Tiburon, Calif., and William Eric Carlborg of San Diego, Calif., and his sister, Sonja Campbell of Washington, Iowa; proud grandfather of seven grandchildren.

Frank is predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine Gilmartin and Elizabeth “Betty” Elliott.

Plowing through a rough winter Salt supplies dwindling as snow continues to pile up

ith this winter being the second snowiest on record, local municipalities are finding their salt supplies being stretched to the limit.

“We’ve had 31 snow events and received 41 inches of snow to date,” said Kevin Stahr, communications coordinator for Geneva. “Normally at this time, we would have received 22 inches of snow.”

According to the National Weather Service, the area received 33.7 inches of snow in January, which made it the third-snowiest month on record. And February is starting out snowy as well.

The area received between 3 to 4 inches of snow Saturday, and could receive another 2 to 6 inches of snow this afternoon through Wednesday morning.

Saturday’s snowstorm pushed the 2013-14 season snow total to 52.8 inches, the second-snowiest winter season the Chicago area has seen.

With 66.2 inches, the 1978-79 season still holds the record.

The snowy activity is putting a strain on Geneva’s salt supplies.

“We’ve used 2,882 tons of salt since October,” Stahr said. “Typically, we use 2,000 tons from October to April.

The city now has about 600 tons of salt left, and has had to order 800 additional tons.

“We’ve tried to stretch our salt out by adding sand to the mix,” he said. “We are using a 2-to-1 ratio of salt to sand. So for every one bucket of sand we add to the trucks, we’re adding two buckets of salt.

We’ve been trying to use salt as sparingly as possible.”

The city of Batavia has between 1,800 to 1,900 tons of salt on hand, but Batavia street superintendent Scott Haines doesn’t know whether that will be enough for the rest of the winter.

“Under normal circumstances, we should be in pretty good shape, but this year is far from normal,” Haines said. “At this point, we are in a holding pattern to see how things go. We are exploring other resources to see what is available on the marketplace.”

Since November, the city has used 3,600 tons of salt. On the average, the city will use between 2,800 and 3,300 tons of salt a season, Haines said.

Batavia has taken steps to conserve salt.

“We are using less in the neighborhoods,” Haines said.

“We are trying to ration it as best as we can.”

The recent cold snaps also presented a challenge to public works departments. St. Charles Public Services Manager Chris Adesso said the city treats its salt to make it more effective in the colder weather.

Sugar Grove has used about 2,500 tons of salt, close to the average amount the village uses during an entire season. Village officials say there is enough salt on hand for the immediate future.

Snow plow driver Mark Gaffino of North Aurora, however, isn’t worried about running out of salt. He contracts to plow commercial properties.

“I’m sitting OK right now,” Gaffino said. “I know some guys who are out completely.

I predicted this would happen.

I had a gut feeling. We had a mild winter last year.”

Despite the challenges of this winter, municipalities are doing their best to make sure the streets are safe for motorists.

“Safety is still our main priority,” Stahr said. “We want to continue to provide a safe road environment for our residents and visitors.”

Police department sees no internal affairs complaints KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department had no internal affairs investigations or complaints in 2013, according to a news release issued Monday.

The police department – a CALEA nationally accredited law enforcement agency – annually releases a summary of internal investigations from the previous year.

The police department has an internal affairs complaint/ commendation pamphlet that

contains information to anyone wanting to file a personal complaint against a department member.

The pamphlet also provides instructions about how a citizen can compliment a member of the department by either contacting a supervisor on duty or by sending a letter to the police chief.

Randall Road project up for vote in McHenry County

By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Board will vote Tuesday on whether to spend $15.9 million to design the Randall Road widening project and buy the needed land.

County Board members in three votes will decide on a $9.1 million design contract with Schaumburg-based TranSystems and a $1.75 million contract with Chicago-based Mathewson Right of Way Company to obtain the land parcels.

Another vote will allocate up to $5 million to cover the land purchases themselves.

The votes will come after a presentation on the second-phase engineering to widen the major shopping corridor, and after the public comment portion in which at least one government opposed to the project’s scope – especially a proposal to build a continuous-flow intersection at Randall and Algonquin roads – likely will make its position known again.

The project, which the county’s latest five-year highway improve-

ment plan prices at $115 million, will add capacity and improve about 3.5 miles of Randall Road from Ackman Road through Lake in the Hills to County Line Road at the Algonquin Commons shopping center in Algonquin. Plans call for widening the entire stretch to three lanes in each direction, building dual left-turn lanes and exclusive right-turn lanes at major signal intersections.

The continuous-flow intersection, bordering Lake in the Hills to the north and Algonquin to the south, is the most controversial component.

At a continuous-flow intersection, left-turning vehicles start turning several hundred feet before the main intersection at a signaled crossover intersection.

They head into separate lanes that allow them to turn left at the same time that other vehicles are going straight.

While the government of Lake in the Hills has criticized the entire project scope as overkill, it especially opposes a CFI, which it alleges will hurt its sales tax revenue by closing off most Randall

The village of Algonquin has been more receptive, citing congestion during peak travel hours as a real problem.

The decision on whether to go with a continuous-flow intersection is not final, but it was announced in November that $10.6 million in federal funding, or about 80 percent of the cost, has been pledged if a CFI is built.

Most of the $15.9 million, pending approval Tuesday, will come from the county’s state and local motor fuel tax, except for about $2.8 million for the design that will be paid from the county’s share of the Regional Transportation Authority sales tax.

All three recommendations sailed through the McHenry County Board Transportation Committee last month.

The two votes for the right-ofway spending were unanimous, while the recommendation to grant the engineering contract passed, 6-1.

The county’s five-year plan anticipates construction to start in 2016 at the earliest.

Putin is losing the Sochi Olympic game

By JACKSON DIEHL The Washington Post This was to be the week Vladimir Putin reintroduced Russia to the world: a confident, economically booming power whose influence in Eastern Europe and the Middle East is coming back; whose ability to block and counter the United States is re-established; and which offers, through Putin, a new model of conservatism for those disenchanted with the liberal West.

Yet that is not how it is turning out. Beginning Friday, the Sochi Olympics are more likely to become a forum for the demonstration of how and why Putin’s rule of Russia has failed – and how his power is ebbing both abroad and at home.

Start with the scene in Sochi. Putin recently said that he “would like the participants, fans, journalists

and all those who watch the Games on television to see a new Russia, see its face and possibilities.” Here’s the storylines the games so far have created: the Stalinist excess of a record $50 billion spent, of which most may have been stolen; the hate speech directed by Putin at the gay community and the protests that has engendered; and, most ominously, the “black widows” and other terrorists who may stalk the games.

The civilized world will pray that the terrorists don’t succeed. But they may also have cause to reflect on how, exactly, Russia came to have some of the world’s most virulent homegrown Islamic jihadists. The simple answer is that Putin launched his career in 1999 by invading the then-autonomous Caucasian republic of Chechnya. He crushed its secular and democratically elected government, destroyed its

capital with indiscriminate artillery fire and then claimed that anyone who resisted was a terrorist whom he would “rub out in the outhouse.” His propaganda proved self-fulfilling, and the extremists he created have endured.

Reflection on Chechnya naturally leads to consideration of Syria, where Putin has backed the regime of Bashar Assad in a nearly identical strategy for combatting what began as a mass secular protest movement.

The results are the same: the appearance of a Syrian al-Qaida corps that did not previously exist. A few months ago, many believed that Putin had nevertheless succeeded in resuscitating Assad, and with him Russia’s place in the Middle East. He had prevented U.S. airstrikes and diverted the West into negotiating with the regime.

gambit is curdling. Last week Assad’s envoys to the Geneva peace talks embarrassed even the Russian delegation with their histrionic antics, while the State Department reported that Assad’s fulfillment of a promise to hand over chemical weapons “has seriously languished and stalled.” On the ground, massive deliveries of Russian arms to Assad’s forces have failed to break a stalemate, and independent analysts are predicting a renewed rebel offensive in Damascus this spring.

Syria may not benefit much from these developments, but Russia and Putin are paying a price. A man deeply preoccupied with his self-image as the bare-chested ruler of a superpower saw himself humiliated at an E.U.-Russia summit last week, denied the traditional dinner by Europeans disgusted by his foreign policy. That

came after President Barack Obama failed even to mention Russia or its leader in his State of the Union speech.

The “reset” of U.S.-Russian relations, which allowed Putin to present himself as the natural counterpart to the U.S. president, has been rubbed out.

What about Putin’s new model of authoritarian government based on “traditional values,” such as homophobia? Ask Ukrainians. The story of their political crisis there is, to a large degree, a story of Putin’s attempt to install his model in a country that has been bonded to Russia for centuries and where one-sixth of the population is ethnic Russian.

This includes the anti-gay agenda: Putin’s surrogates and Russian media have claimed the Western-backed Ukrainian opposition wants to undermine the country’s heterosexual norms.

To the Editor: As I begin my 16th and final legislative session, I find the moment bittersweet. On the one hand, I am extremely excited about the opportunities ahead; on the other hand, I continue to be nervous for our future. Maybe it’s the parent in me, maybe it’s the realist developed by what I’ve witnessed in government or maybe it’s just healthy to be nervous about change. Government service is a difficult venue for “Type A” personalities like myself. We want results quickly and if it doesn’t work, we immediately want to implement changes.

For better or worse, government doesn’t work that way. It’s a much more slow and deliberate process. Many times I warned concerned constituents that it can be good a bill takes so long. Ideas that change our way of life need to be vetted. It seems the quicker government reacts, the more unintended consequences that occur.

raig and Sherrie Holthus attended each of daughter Stephanie’s volleyball matches at Burlington Central and Northwestern from 2006 to 2013.

Stephanie Holthus’ recent ascent to the role of professional outside hitter seems an unlikely time to trail off, but every family has its limits.

Holthus now plays in Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean is a far cry – and commute – from the burgs of the Big Northern East and Big Ten conferences.

“It’s just killing them to not be able to come down here to follow me,” Holthus said.

Holthus entertained her mother over the weekend and awaits a return visit in two weeks. She will be back home soon enough; the Liga de Voleibol Superior Femenino season lasts just four months, providing an appetizer for what professional volleyball life is like.

European seasons run longer, and would likely be the next step for Holthus and Lauren Wicinski, a Geneva and Michigan State product who also is smacking kills in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory.

Or so Wicinski thinks.

While she hasn’t launched a full investigation, a quick look at a stat sheet recently convinced Wicinski that aces, blocks and kills are lumped into one category, points.

In any event, the pomp before her first pro match last month made it clear Puerto Ricans embrace volleyball either way.

It was like, ‘Oh, wow. This is really cool.’ ” Wicinski plays for Carolina while Holthus – who already has been traded – represents Cataño. Both players became their universities’ respective career kills leaders before heading south.

Eight teams comprise the league, and matches typically are played twice a week: once at midweek, then again

on weekends. Wicinski said two foreign-born players are allotted a team.

Agent Tim Kelly of Denver-based Bring It Promotions serves as liaison for Holthus and Wicinski, just two clients in a recent deep string of Americans to give Puerto Rico a try after successful collegiate careers.

“We’re probably not even aware of half the stuff he does,” Holthus said. “Negotiates, contacts, pitches us

to all the teams, and then he basically finds the teams to land us on. But then, of course, things can happen at any time.”

The schedule leaves some idle hours during the day, as practices often are held at night. Holthus studied German and admits, “That’s not really coming in handy out here.”

She shouldn’t sweat it.

Wicinski’s Spanish background still left her with better command of words than sentences, but did help remind her that her city – Carolina – was not pronounced like the U.S. states.

She’s especially grateful for teammate Stephanie Niemer, a former Cincinnati standout in her fourth season in the league.

Niemer helps Wicinski navigate the country – located in the Atlantic time zone, two hours ahead of Central time.

Holthus (secondary) and Wicinski (elementary) both are education majors closing in on their degrees. Both felt they were in position to delay full-time studies for this chance.

“Just wanted to test it out and felt like this is a good, short time away from home to see what I felt and try to figure it out from there,” Wicinski said.

Should Wicinski make like Niemer and return for more than one season, her family can’t fret too much.

“That’s the nice thing about Puerto Rico,” Wicinski’s mother, Gina, wrote in an email. “We didn’t need to change cell service.”

“No, I love it. I mean, I’m probably not going to listen to it as much as I have been the past few months, but if it came on, I wouldn’t turn it off,” VanWagenen said. “It causes a good memory.”

Moving up: Kenny Socorro, the Kane County Cougars’ fourth coach in 2013 who was activated for spot bullpen duty down the stretch, has been promoted to the parent Cubs’ front office. There’ll be no time for throwing as Socorro assumed the duty of player development/ international scouting assistant.

“No, hopefully not,” Socorro said. “That took a toll on my arm.”

Socorro, 24, attended scouting school during the offseason in a bid to stay in baseball.

Drafted by the Cubs as a shortstop in the 44th round in 2011, he encountered injuries early in his career but proved a good asset to Cougars manager Mark Johnson, who then was guiding Short-A Boise. The bilingual Socorro showed an early knack for coaching.

Johnson and hitting coach Tom Beyers will return for the 2014 season, but the club is bringing in a new pitching coach, David Rosario.

Geneva’s competitive dancing team seized an IHSA Class 2A state championship at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington over the weekend.

While the Vikings needed just four minutes, 30 seconds – the rough combined length of a preliminary and finals routine – to achieve glory, don’t let that convince you any of this was easy.

“Winning state was not luck and it wasn’t just something that happened,” Geneva coach Amy VanWagenen said. “It’s come from working very, very hard from the start of our season in June all the way up until now.”

Performing a jazz routine to the Delta Rae song “Bottom of the River,” Geneva vaulted to the top by virtue of its consistency. No other 2A team defeated the Vikings when they used “Bottom of the River” this season.

Geneva scored a season-high 92.38 Saturday – 100 is the maximum combined score from six judges – to edge Vernon Hills (91.74).

The tightness VanWagenen observed backstage before Friday’s prelims vanished by the time the finals rolled around.

Knowing the worst-case scenario still meant a 10th-place state finish in the second year of an IHSA-affiliated state series, the Vikings put together a sound routine one last time.

“At that point, they just wanted to go perform for themselves, perform for each other, and they did it,” VanWagenen said.

On Monday, the 18-member team paraded through the school halls along with VanWagenen, a four-year dance team member at Iowa State who also is a veteran coach through the Universal Dance Association.

Also a substitute teacher in Geneva District 304, VanWagenen suspects she’ll give “Bottom of the River” a few more listens between now and next season. Maybe it’s the title talking, but she doesn’t mind having the song stuck in her head.

St. Charles North didn’t close the gap on Larkin in the Upstate Eight Conference River race Saturday, but the North Stars still hope something constructive comes from their 62-55 loss.

Larkin swept the regular-season series against North and realistically ended the UEC River race with the win, but the teams share the IHSA Class 4A St. Charles North Regional next month.

Although postseason seedings have not come out, North and Larkin likely would not meet until the regional championship game if both teams can handle their semifinal opponents.

That would be a rematch of a regional final last season at South Elgin, won by the Royals.

While Larkin surely would be a heavy favorite if the teams met for a third time this season, the way North trimmed its deficit against the Royals from 18 points to five during the second half Saturday emboldened North.

“That second half I think proved to us we can beat them,” North forward Erik Miller said. “They’re a beatable team. They’re very good, but when we play consistent at our high level, I think we may have success in the regional. I think that second half was very good for us.”

Larkin led by 14 at halftime before scoring the first four points of the second half, at which point the North Stars regrouped nicely, frazzling the powerhouse Royals for stretches of the second half.

Camden Cotter and the St. Charles North boys basketball team could get another shot at Larkin in regionals next month.

“The second half I thought we did a much better job of being us,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “For the kids to see, hey when we do this, even Larkin has a difficult time defending you [is helpful] … but it will take our best game to get to the regional final, and then to beat them, it’ll take our best game.

“But I think it will be good to have some success on film, and just to have another game against us as opposed to other opponents. We’ve got two now of them just against us, and just to see how how they attack us when they’re on offense makes us better.”

Even if second-place teams Geneva or St. Charles North

win out in conference play, Larkin (18-3, 9-0 UEC River) only needs to win one of its final three UEC River home games – against Elgin on Friday, last-place Streamwood on Feb. 11 and Geneva on Feb. 14 – to clinch its second straight outright conference title.

Rotation tightening for Warriors With it being Pete Froedden’s first year coaching at Wheaton Academy, it’s taken Froedden a little longer to develop a strong feel for his personnel.

“We’re getting closer,” said Froedden, whose team is unbeaten in Suburban Christian Conference Blue play. “We

played probably 11 to 12 guys early in the year and we’re probably down to closer to nine or 10 now. It varies based on matchups and based on past performances but as you know, the closer you get to the end of the season and tournament time, you kind of have to narrow it down and get guys who are producing more on the floor more often.”

Big man Chandler Fuzak saw limited time in the Warriors’ recent win against Marmion and went scoreless but Froedden said there’s no reason to read too much into it.

“Chandler’s fine and he’s going to be a big impact and big influence now and what we do moving forward,” Froedden said. “He’s going to be a reason that we do well this year, and we’re looking for big things from him. He grows each and every day so we’re tickled to death with him begin a Warrior and him having a great career with us.

His deal is like all of our guys, working hard every day and trying to get better.”

Adjust your calendar Saturday’s postponed game between Kaneland and host DeKalb has been moved to 7 p.m. today.

Aurora Central’s game against Wheaton Academy was rescheduled from Saturday to Monday. Tonight’s ACC-Marian Central game in Aurora was moved up to a 6 p.m. start because of the possibility of snow.

East and North found out this week they’re not good enough to beat Larkin. At least not right now.

Both teams had a shot at Larkin on their home courts in must-win conference games, and, bottom line, neither the Saints nor the Stars were up to the task.

The bad news is Larkin is lurking in March as both East and North are part of the same regional

with the Royals, to be hosted by North.

The good news is both teams have a month to identify whatever solutions they can to close the gap on the Royals. A tall order, but East and North have shown this year they can compete (and beat) good teams. Just not Larkin ... not yet, anyway.

The Saints’ frustration surfaced moments later. Referees whistled East forward AJ Washington for a technical foul early in the second quarter after he taunted Chris Parrilli upon blocking his 3-point attempt from the right baseline.

Geneva’s Nate Navigato scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. His final offensive contribution, a dunk with 6:06 to play, sent the bench and Vikings backers into a frenzy.

Geneva otherwise strived to keep a low-key approach to the game. Ralston credited assistants Rob Wicinski and Scott Hennig for hatching the idea to “make it a business trip,” especially on the heels of East’s 6751 win at Geneva in December.

The team switched its pregame routine around and beelined for the bus shortly after the final whistle, as if scurrying to catch a flight home.

Mike Landi (13 points) and Pace Temple (12) also finished

in double figures for the Vikings, who have struggled with the Saints in recent seasons.

Landi often capitalized on a handful of Geneva’s 19 offensive rebounds, while Temple struck largely in transition.

“We were just fluid today,” Cook said. “We really had everything going for us.”

The Saints had the opposite lament. Coach Pat Woods took the blame for the slow start, as he started East in a little-used 2-3 zone with an eye on diversifying the team for the postseason.

Larkin, 9-0 in the River, clinched at least a share of the conference title Saturday and knocked off East for the second time Thursday.

“We’re just not together yet offensively – today,” Woods said. “We’ve had glimpses of it in the past, obviously. We’ve put a lot of points on the board.

But again, some of that flow is stimulated by our defense, and we didn’t have that today.”

ST. CHARLES – The Larkin boys basketball team quashed all suspense in the Upstate Eight Conference River race by the first night of February, and now there is no doubt which team is the clear favorite once the Class 4A St. Charles North Regional starts next month.

Playing on that same floor Saturday night, Larkin cemented its status as back-toback UEC River champions, building an 18-point lead before holding off North, 62-55.

Both St. Charles schools will be among the leading contenders to upset Larkin when postseason play begins. But after the Royals won Thursday at East and Saturday at North to earn regular-season sweeps against both schools, Larkin has earned the status as prohibitive favorites.

“If we have the target on our backs, that’s fine,” Larkin coach Deryn Carter said.

“But when the ball’s thrown up, all teams go for it, so we’ll see come regional time.”

For now, the Royals (18-3, 9-0 UEC River) have a more certain championship to celebrate, which they did heartily in the locker room after the game. Larkin clinched at least a share of the title, but another outright crown is a virtual certainty with three home conference games remaining.

“Back-to-back doing that, two years in a row, from where this program was five years ago when we all came together, I don’t ever want

them to take that for granted, you know what I mean,” Carter said. “We get really low when we lose, but you’ve got to get really high, then, when you win, and I just wanted to make sure our guys knew the magnitude of what they did for our school and our program, winning back-to-back conference championships.”

Although North (12-7, 6-3 UEC River) made up substantial ground in the second half, Larkin could smell the conference championship-clincher by halftime, when it led, 34-20. Senior forward Brayden Royse – usually not an offensive focal point for the balanced Royals – made a trio of 3-pointers in the second quarter as Larkin created separation.

“Out of everyone on that team, that’s kind of who you would like to have shooting, even though he’s a quality basketball player, we’d rather have him shooting,” North coach Tom Poulin said of Royse. “But we’d like him shooting contested shots.

I might have been able to make those, he was so open.”

North’s midgame woes were compounded by a technical foul for touching the rim during halftime warmups, and after a Kendale McCullum-to-Christian Negron alley-oop dunk to begin the third quarter, the Royals led by 18.

The North Stars played much better the rest of the way, even coming within five points twice in the final two minutes, but chasing 18 points against a team of Larkin’s caliber is almost guaranteed to end badly.

ST. CHARLES – Guards Dom Adduci and Cole Gentry conspired on a handful off oohand ahh-inducing moments for St. Charles East boys basketball fans Saturday night.

Those stretches aside, they still were left to ponder an Upstate Eight Conference River Division loss to Geneva that seldom was close.

If the Vikings couldn’t be perfect in a 67-49 road victory, they approached something similar in limiting Adduci and Gentry to 21 combined points and a joint 9-for-23 effort from the field.

“They kind of got control.

They played their tempo,” Gentry said. “So then we’re chasing 10 points early and we’re playing their tempo. Trying to get up and down, but they’re not letting us.”

Geneva (17-4, 6-3 UEC River) remained mathematically alive in the conference race by pestering the Saints’ top scorers.

A 41-15 rebounding advantage paid dividends, too.

When Adduci and Gentry shared the floor, the Vikings played a 3-2 zone. When either player was out, Geneva coach Phil Ralston called for the 1-3 “chase,” which Gentry likened to a box-and-one.

“What makes it effective is they don’t really touch the ball as much,” Geneva senior point guard Cam Cook said. “They’re getting less looks. They’ve got to give it to other players on the team. So we try to take their best player out and let the other team go to work for them.”

Considering reserve guard Jake Asquini scored eight points to match Adduci – Gentry had a team-high 13 – mission accomplished.

East (12-10, 6-4) struggled on 7-for-22 shooting in the first half. The team remained in single digits until a Gentry layup with 3:22 left before halftime gave the Saints their 10th and 11th points.

Geneva’s student section also joined in the fun, chanting “WE CAN’T SEE YOU!” at its East counterparts late in the first quarter on camouflage night.

That was the pronouncement of Amanda Hilton as she hugged teammate Katie Claussner following St. Charles East’s 53-48 upset of Batavia on Saturday.

Claussner, a junior guard, scored 22 points as the Saints (11-13, 4-6) pulled off the shocker of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls basketball season, handing the Bulldogs (16-7, 8-1) their first league loss and spoiling senior night for Batavia Division I-bound standouts Liza Fruendt and Erin Bayram.

“Liza Fruendt is an amazing player – the best player I’ve ever played against,” Claussner said. “We had to

force her, we had to stop her, and our defense was oriented around stopping her, and that’s what we did. But I respect her whole-heartedly.”

East employed a boxand-one defense with MacKenzie Meadows and Kelly Rinker taking turns guarding FruKatie Claussner e n d t , w h o still scored 21 points, including hitting a long-range shot at the third-quarter buzzer.

“Even though we played a box-and-one on Liza, it’s not one person’s responsibility to stop her,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “We all have to be aware of it. We all have to help out. And I thought they did a great job.”

The Saints dominated the boards, pulling down 45 rebounds, 17 more than the Bulldogs. Hannah Nowling secured 11 rebounds, Chloe John grabbed nine, and Keyana Williams had seven.

East held a 23-10 edge on the glass at halftime and led 28-19.

“They beat us in the first half, without a doubt,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said.

“They beat us to every rebound and loose ball – everything that somebody would describe as a 50-50 ball.”

The Bulldogs also were hampered by poor shooting at the free-throw line (10 of 23) and from virtually pointblank range.

“I had us on our shot chart as 11 of 29 on our layups,” Jensen said. “That’s nearly 50 points left out there.”

Jensen said he also was disappointed in Batavia’s defense. The Bulldogs played man-to-man most of the game, but the 5-foot-5 Claussner used quickness and deft ball-handling to repeatedly attack the basket and 6-1 junior Kyra Washington (16 points) inflicted damage from long range, hitting five 3-pointers.

“Me and Kyra – we’ve known each other forever,” Claussner said. “We just have great chemistry on the court.”

“Katie’s really playing well,” Drumtra said. “Her outside shot is starting to come through. Kyra’s playing very, very well. Everybody else, I asked them to just play solid.”

With Hilton out for the rest of the season with a knee

injury, East’s offense is now Claussner’s to run.

“Losing Amanda was obviously a terrible thing,” Claussner said. “She’s my mentor and she’s taught me a lot of stuff.”

Bayram scored 10 points for Batavia and Hannah Frazier added eight before fouling out. Frazier scored inside with 3:10 left in the game to cut the East lead to 44-42, but the Bulldogs could get no closer.

Bayram, bound for Boston University, and Fruendt, a Missouri State recruit, can take solace from the fact this was not their final appearance on their home court.

The Bulldogs will host an Upstate Eight Conference crossover game to end the regular season and Batavia also will host a Class 4A regional.

Seahawks prove defense still wins Super Bowls The NFL season is indeed a marathon rather than a sprint, but with the Seahawks’ 43-8 rout of the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII now in the books, another grueling season and race are over.

What did we learn, and where do we go from here?

It seems to me the most emphatic lesson to take from 2013 is that, as entertaining and exciting as wide open offenses and NFL passing attacks can be, defense and ground games still win championships.

Can there be any doubt after Denver’s pathetic performance on the game’s biggest stage, and how thoroughly they dominated the Patriots in the AFC title game, that the three best teams in the NFL this year were Seattle, San Francisco and Carolina?

Could it be mere coincidence that those three clubs all finished in the bottom tier

of NFL passing offenses, but were the three best defenses in the league and owned among the league’s best running games?

Is it also just a fluke that each of those clubs possess one of the NFL’s brightest young quarterbacks, but that none of Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick or Cam Newton has done anything to suggest they will be among the league’s top passers but all three can beat you with their legs at almost any time?

To be clear, I suspect teams quarterbacked by Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees will win another Super Bowl or two before they are all done. But not without a top defense and a stud running back or two.

Bringing this closer to home, there is a theory that’s been espoused mainly by ill-informed media and fans, but also by the occasional

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush NFL coach or general manager, that teams can contend in the NFL with a big-time offense and an “adequate” defense.

I believe the Seahawks and Broncos just proved – with an exclamation point – that is not the case.

Another hot-button topic to come out of this Super Bowl is the question of whether or not the “cold weather” Super Bowl worked and can work again in the future.

As lucky as the NFL owners got with the weather last week in New York and New Jersey, and as incredibly lucky as they were on gameday, my sense from Roger Goodell and the other powers that be is they know

exactly how lucky they were and that they will be in no great hurry to try it again.

Interestingly enough, the two cold-weather cities with open air stadiums rumored to be preparing bids for February of 2018 – ’15, ’16 and ’17 have been awarded to Arizona, San Francisco and Houston – are Denver and Seattle.

We’ll know more about this at the NFL owners meetings in the spring, but I’d put my money on New Orleans, which will also be preparing a bid for 2018, while the “cold weather” question gets kicked down the road a bit.

What will the next big topic be for the NFL’s owners and its fans? Keep your eyes on St. Louis and Los Angeles.

While it absolutely escapes me why the NFL owners are so determined to put a team back in L.A. when two have already failed and left, and the TV ratings in the

market improve markedly when there is no club there, they are.

It was reported Wednesday that St. Louis Rams owner and billionaire real estate developer Stan Kroenke recently purchased 60 acres of land in the L.A. market, and it is no secret he continues to be frustrated by the refusal of the folks in St. Louis to update the stadium there or build a new one.

It could just be that Kroenke found a deal on land he couldn’t pass up. Or it could be that he will petition the league this spring to allow him to finally build a stadium in L.A. and move the Rams back to L.A. Kroenke’s not saying, but it’s a story we’ll watch closely.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Hunting for treasures seems to be an inborn trait. Perhaps it’s from the need of the caveman to search, find food and store some for later use. For centuries, the very rich surrounded themselves with expensive art and artifacts to impress each other and “the peasants.”

Today, many people enjoy collecting a variety of things, like costume jewelry, bottles, tools, prints, pottery, 1950s furniture, advertising and sports and political items. Sometimes the best information about collections comes from the clubs and publications devoted to the subject. One subcategory of advertising we recently noticed are talcum powder tins, since lawsuits related to talcum powder have been in the news recently.

Talc is a mineral. It absorbs moisture, and in powdered form it has been used for centuries to keep skin dry. Look for tins by Watkins, Colgate, Johnson, Caswell-Massey and other major brands, and also brands from other countries or long-gone companies. Prices range from $10 to about $150 for most tins offered online, but the rarest and most beautiful may cost as much at $800. *** Q: About 40 years ago, I bought an oak lawyer’s rotary desk at auction.

Stafford Co. was founded in 1890 and was reincorporated as E.H. Stafford Manufacturing Co. in 1904. The company made school, church and office furniture as well as opera chairs. It was in business until at least the 1920s. Because it’s an interesting desk, it probably would sell for $500 to $700. *** Q: I’m trying to find information about my old copper barrel. It’s stamped “Lippincott, 8 gal.” and “916 Filbert St.” It also has an eagle on it and the abbreviation “Phila.” Can you tell me who made the barrel and how old it might be?

A: Several members of the Lippincott family ran a business at this Filbert Street address from 1832 until about 1911. John and Charles Lippincott of Philadelphia made special copper machinery before expanding into the production of soda water, syrups and equipment for carbonating water. Charles took over the business from John, his older brother, in 1865. He made ornate soda fountains with multiple spigots for different flavors. Charles Lippincott & Co. joined with three other companies to form the American Soda Fountain Co., a trust designed to monopolize soda fountain manufacturing, in 1891.

When Charles retired, his sons A.H. and F.H. Lippincott took over the business.

At one time, in some states, it was legal to own people. They could be bought and sold like cows and horses. This was called slavery.

Many people thought slavery was wrong.

They wanted to help slaves find a way to live free. This is how the Underground Railroad started. The kindnesses and concerns of thousands of strangers kept this freedom train “running.”

“Conductor” was one of the most dangerous jobs on the Underground Railroad. Conductors were runaway slaves who led other slaves to freedom. One of the most famous was Harriet Tubman.

Harriet Tubman led more than 300 slaves to freedom. She once said, “On my Underground Railroad I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger.”

Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist and a newspaper publisher. He escaped slavery, traveled north to freedom and then began speaking out against slavery.

Runaway slaves followed the North Star to freedom. If the stars were hidden by clouds, they would feel the trunks of the trees, looking for moss, which always grows on the north side of a tree.

The Underground Railroad, as it was called, was a series of secret paths and stations that helped runaway slaves find their way to freedom. The secret railroad ran from the southern United States to Canada.

Thomas Garrett’s home was a station on the Underground Railroad. He gave food and shelter to more than 2,500 runaway slaves. In 1848, he was arrested for helping runaway slaves. All of his property was taken away from him and sold. He had to pay a huge fine and was left penniless. Yet, he surprised the sheriff with what he said.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, an actor of moments big and small

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Philip Seymour Hoffman wasn’t a movie star in the conventional sense of the term. He wasn’t glamorous or given to the kind of serial-dating, motorcycle-riding, scene-making “lifestyle” that encourages fans to think they know all about you. Rather than a manufactured persona, filmgoers who mourn the 46-year-old actor’s death Sunday are remembering moments – those ineluctable instances in which Hoffman fused “being” and “seeming,” to create textbook examples of acting at its very best.

For most people, those moments occurred in movies by Paul Thomas Anderson, the filmmaker who brought Hoffman to national prominence in his 1997 disco-porno masterpiece, “Boogie Nights,” but who had cast the actor earlier in Anderson’s feature debut, “Hard Eight.” In 2006, Hoffman won a completely deserved Oscar for his lead performance in “Capote,” an alert, gratifyingly un-schticky reanimation of the author of “In Cold Blood.”

Great Hoffman moments, all. But for so many bravura star turns there are countless, equally electrifying, examples in smaller movies, from his beleaguered son of an abusive father in “The Savages” to his obsessive theater director in Charlie Kaufman’s gnarly art-imitates-life-imitates-art head-trip, “Synecdoche, New York.”

That Hoffman died amid talk of a drug overdose – law enforcement sources said that a syringe was found in his arm and that there were apparent signs of heroin use in the New York apartment where he died – will no doubt invite the inevitable talk of an artist and his demons. But filmgoers are reminded first of that artistry.

With his adamantly untoned physique, strawberry-blond hair and pallid complexion, Hoffman was no one’s idea of a matinee idol. He was, instead, a character actor, that yeoman laborer of filmdom who, without a pre-packaged image to protect, can be relied on to sacrifice vanity and shun mass adoration

American actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his Manhattan apartment Feb. 2. in the service of total immersion into a role. In Hoffman’s case, that meant paunchy, rheumy-eyed regular guys and vulnerable losers whose desperate search for connection so often mirrored his audience’s own shabby, shameful, unphotogenic lives.

The last few years of the actor’s career neatly summed up all that he was capable of: In the 2010 film “Jack Goes Boating,” which marked Hoffman’s directorial debut, he personified a sad-sack, anonymous striver not as a caricature but as a man of quiet courage and tenderness. The next year, he proved just as adroit playing a tough, politics-ain’t-beanbag political adviser in George Clooney’s Washington thriller, “The Ides of March” – which was released within weeks of “Moneyball,” in which Hoffman not only brought rumpled deadpan humor to Oakland A’s manager Art Howe but also helped make Brad Pitt more credible in a similar role.

And 2012 saw similar, seemingly effortless spins-on-a-dime: No sooner had Hoffman delivered a galvanizing,

blow-the-doors-off turn as self-deluded cult leader Lancaster Dodd in Anderson’s “The Master” than he appeared, altogether credibly, as a violinist in the soft-spoken chamber-music melodrama “A Late Quartet.” So went the pattern of Hoffman’s singular career, all the more exceptional for being so un-showy.

Rarely has an actor so consistently elevated the material he worked with, regardless of genre, budget, aesthetic merit or box-office throw-weight.

There will be talk that is the latest in a depressingly long line of actors who have succumbed to substance abuse.

The same rhetoric swirled around Heath Ledger when he died in 2008, and Cory Monteith upon his death last July.

That people blessed with such prodigious gifts can also be so tortured, we assume, has something to do with the price of genius. There must be a mystical karmic balance in which the sensitivity it takes to be a professional empath – someone willing to take the psychic, emotional and even physical risks necessary to shape-shift into another individual, over and over again – leads them to seek numbness, whether to quiet the voices in their heads, heal their primal wounds or help the sensory and creative juices to flow with more Rabelaisian ferocity.

It’s a romantic thought, and one that allows admirers of great artists to speak of their loss with compassion, as well as respect for their profound talents. But rhetoric of artistic demons obscures what is, in reality, simply a crippling, fatal disease – of which Hoffman is the latest famous casualty and which affects millions of people far outside the creative confines of Manhattan and Hollywood.

Whatever language we use, though, doesn’t obscure the fact that a superbly talented actor – one capable of bringing so many truths to messy, complicated, ultimately sympathetic life – has been silenced forever. To paraphrase an exchange between Billy Wilder and William Wyler at Ernst Lubitsch’s funeral: We’ve not only lost Philip Seymour Hoffman, we’ve lost all those Hoffman moments that might have been.

Wives banished from club should create one Dear Abby: My husband and I live in a 55-plus retirement community. We do many things together, but we also do things independently. One resident decided to form two men’s clubs. One meets every week for breakfast, and the other twice a month at night. The members go to each other’s homes for the evening meetings.

Abby, the man who started these clubs is chauvinistic. He made a rule that women are not allowed in their own homes when their husbands host a meeting – “no skirts allowed.” Therefore, even though the wife prepares everything for her husband’s meeting, she’s told to slip out of the house before anyone arrives.

My husband agrees that this is ridiculous and is considering quitting the club, but he has formed friendships with some of the men. The guys are bamboozled by the leader and tell their wives that anything said at a meeting is “confidential.”

The obvious solution would be to meet at a coffee shop, but the man in charge says the homes pro-

The first is that the wives stop preparing anything and let the “bachelors” do it themselves or order takeout or deli for their meetings. The second is that the “widows” join together for an evening of fun while the men are having their meetings. Of course, nothing that happens during these ladies’ evenings of fun should be shared with the husbands – including what they did or what clubs they may have visited.

P.S. Because your husband feels bad about how the women

are being treated, perhaps he should consider attending only the breakfast get-togethers and seeing those men in the evening group he has bonded with independently.

Dear Abby: My girlfriend loses her keys, wallet, credit cards or iPad every day. I have suggested ways to avoid losing her keys, but she doesn’t do it.

She has now become resentful that I have become impatient about it. I’m frustrated because this is something that can easily be fixed. What can I do? – Beyond Frustrated In L.A. Dear Beyond Frustrated: The first thing you should do is understand that your girlfriend isn’t doing this to upset you, and it’s possible that she becomes as upset as you do when it happens. While I agree that part of the problem is that she’s disorganized, it could also be that her thinking is scattered.

Some pain relievers may cause hearing loss Dear Doctor K: I saw my doctor for some problems with my hearing. Why did she want a detailed list of my medications?

Dear Reader: When you think of risk factors for hearing loss, medications probably aren’t at the top of the list. But several over-the-counter and prescription drugs can harm the nerves in the inner ear. This can cause sudden hearing loss, ringing in the ears or vertigo (dizziness).

Two studies done by colleagues at Harvard Medical School suggest that frequent use of even the most common pain relievers – ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) – may cause hearing loss. In the studies, women who took the pain relievers at least twice a week were more likely to have hearing loss. More frequent usage further increased the risk.

It’s possible that pain relievers damage the cochlea, the snailshaped hearing mechanism in your inner ear. One author of the studies, Dr. Sharon Curhan, instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School, explained that ibuprofen can reduce blood flow to the cochlea. This could cause cell damage and death.

And acetaminophen may deplete an antioxidant that protects the

Does this mean you should think twice before popping a pill for a headache or back pain? As always, it’s important to balance risks and benefits. These medicines do provide good pain relief for many people. With short courses of over-the-counter drugs, any hearing problems that might develop likely would be temporary. Ringing in the ears and vertigo also fade over time. Longer courses of prescription drugs (high-dose ibuprofen) would seem to be more likely to lead to permanent changes in hearing.

Pain relievers are not the only drugs that can affect hearing. Other commonly used drugs that can cause hearing loss include certain antibiotics, diuretics, and drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Aspirin is a problem only when it’s taken too often or in too high a dose.

As I’ve said before, take all medications mindfully. Always try to take the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount of time to minimize the risk of side

effects.

Studies like those I discuss above don’t prove that ibuprofen and acetaminophen cause hearing loss. For example, it could be that some other unrecognized illness caused study participants’ hearing loss and caused them pain – which then prompted them to take pain relievers.

Sometimes I get letters from readers who ask why I mention studies that suggest, but don’t prove, that a particular practice may have health risks. My answer is that I generally don’t mention such studies unless I think they are particularly strong scientifically.

Unfortunately, very few medical studies come to definitive answers. It usually takes many studies before a possible health threat is considered proven. But I also keep my eye on studies that don’t offer absolute proof but are strong enough to make me think twice – in this case, about the bedtime acetaminophen I take to relieve some arthritis pain.

My children know that I am the boss and in control, so they will get put on restriction if they argue.

“Because I said so,” is very effective for me because they know the consequences. – Mom in Ashville, N.C. Dear Mom: I truly believe that parents are the boss and need to maintain control of their children, but I also know there are many ways to be an effective parent. Although the “Because I said so” philosophy works with your children on the immediate level, they miss the benefit of your reasoning, and therefore, a chance to learn.

It sounds like it is your method of last resort when you’re too tired or impatient to explain yourself further.

For example, when your daughter asks if she can go to the mall with friends and you tell her no, she asks why.

You answer, “Because I said so.” Her friend Mindy asks her mother the same question, and the answer is also no.

But her mother explains that the mall is not a good place to hang out because it isn’t fair to the shops in the mall to have a bunch of teens milling about with very little money to spend.

Neither teen is permitted to go to the mall, but I feel that Mindy can deal with the disappointment better than your daughter. She realizes her mother respects her enough to explain her reasoning, and she knows the decision is not an arbitrary one.

Open communication between parent and teen is vital to a trusting relationship.

But it is your curfew, and you are responsible for getting home on time, not your boyfriend. You have a wristwatch and you know the curfew time.

If for some reason he is ignoring your request to get you home on time, then you should refuse to go out with him.

Before your next date, have a chat with him and explain that you intend to be home by 11:30 p.m. and not a second later, or you will not go out with him again. When it nears time to head for home, remind him of the curfew and that you will be on restriction and not be able to go out with him if he doesn’t get you home on time.

Make sure he knows that if you do go out with him again that he will be on “curfew probation.”

Regardless, I will confess to an error in today’s deal. Look at the South hand. You open one spade and partner raises to two spades. What would you do now?

I was in Phoenix for the Fall North American Championships, playing for a few hours with friends. North was Eddie Kantar, a two-time world champion and an excellent teacher and author. We were playing against Eddie’s wife, Yvonne, and Vinita Gupta, who was fresh from winning the Baze Senior Knockout Teams, her first national title.

When Kantar raised to two spades, I thought I would keep my heart suit hidden, so jumped to four spades. Error!

Gupta led the diamond six.

I put in dummy’s 10 and ruffed East’s queen. Then I led my low club, but West, who could see three major-suit winners, went in with her ace and shifted to a low spade. I had to lose two spades, one heart and one club.

If I had sensibly rebid three hearts, North would have raised to four hearts. Then, it is true, I might have bid again, because North could have held, for example, king-third of spades and king-fifth of hearts, when six hearts would have been excellent. But we would have stopped in five hearts. Then, after I drove out the club ace, cashed the heart ace, and discarded two spades on the king-queen of clubs, a spade-diamond crossruff would have produced 11 tricks.
