GENEVA – A Geneva woman is accused of fatally poisoning her husband of 31 years last week, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

She is the second city resident in two years to face a first-degree murder charge in the death of a spouse.

Associate Judge Marmarie Kostelny read the charge to Julia L. Gutierrez, 53, during bond court Tuesday morning, less than a week after authorities found her husband dead in their Crissey Avenue home.

Gutierrez, who worked for Geneva School District 304 as a bus driver between 1992 and 2004, was being held Tuesday in the Julia L. Kane County jail in St. Gutierrez Charles Township.

She was expected in court this morning for a continued bond hearing.

According to the release, the Geneva Police Department and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office allege that Gutierrez mixed Temazepam, a sedative, into a drink and gave it to her husband sometime between Jan. 26 and Jan. 28.

“Eduardo Gutierrez, unaware of the Temazepam, consumed the drink and died as a result,” the release states.

Elburn approves consultant to help with search for new chief of police

ELBURN – The search for a new police chief continues in Elburn.

At Monday night’s Elburn Village Board meeting, trustees unanimously approved an agreement with McGrath Consulting Group for the recruitment of the next chief.

The former police chief, Steve Smith, retired at the end of 2015.

Former Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez has been working as the interim police chief.

Village President Dave Anderson has said he hopes to name a new police chief when village appointments are made in May. According to village documents, the agreement calls for the consultant to be paid a total of $5,500, plus expenses. The village is to pay $2,000 upon receipt of the contract. The balance would be paid “upon completion of the assessment center and submission of final candidates.”

In the documents, McGrath noted “for full disclosure and transparency” that Perez had previously worked as an independent consultant for the firm but “is not currently, nor ever has been, an employee” of McGrath. The documents stated that Perez “will receive no monetary or other payments from McGrath” but will be part of the process by providing information about the qualifications, providing expertise and “participating in the interviews and selection process as designated by the village administrator.”

Facade improvement grant: Also at Monday’s meeting, trustees unanimously approved a facade improvement grant for Shear Image, which is at 105 E. North St. in Elburn.

The grant amount is $1,555.43.

According to the application, the east-side pillar of the building was in need of tuck-pointing, and the west door needed to be replaced.

A facade grant allows a business to seek reimbursement from the village for one-half of the cost of improvements, at a cost of no more than $5,000. Willrett noted that the request from Shear Image “was the first inquiry that I had.”

St. Charles honors longtime downtown barbershop

CHARLES – A barbershop that Mayor Ray Rogina described as the city’s soul was honored at Monday’s St. Charles City Council meeting with a proclamation declaring Thursday as Avenue Two Barber Shop Day. With Avenue Two’s original and current owners joining him at the podium, Rogina described the shop’s endurance. He said it’s a place where many get their first haircut and many get their last haircut.

“Avenue Two Barber Shop is considered by many to be the place in town where election campaigns have been dissected, won or lost; business ventures were proposed and, on occasion, completed; and home of the most updated and current St. Charles chatter,” Rogina said, reading from the proclamation.

The shop, at 204 E. Main St., opened in 1969 under the ownership of two couples – Jeff and Lori Orland and Don and Barbara Pierce, Rogina said. Previously, he said, the men cut hair at Hotel Baker and Berry’s Barbershop, respectively.

In 2007, barbers Frank Pavlek, Micky Davenport, Brian Shaunnessy and Scott Guetthoff bought the shop, Rogina said, noting their time with Avenue Two ranges from 30 years to 42 years.

Like Don Pierce, all of the new owners are graduates of Mooseheart Child City and School, Rogina said. He said they are joined by another Mooseheart alumnus, Tim Jayne, who has cut hair at Avenue Two for 30 years.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – February’s cold – and sometimes snow – might not usually be conducive for an organized run.

But for the sixth year, the Geneva Park District on Sunday will have its Super Shuffle 5K. “We’ve averaged 670 runners since we started it, and we are already at 570 runners for Sunday’s run,” park district spokeswoman Traci Wicks said.

“Registration on race day is at 9 a.m.”

Registration costs $34, and proceeds fund recreational scholarships, Wicks said. Runners can register online at www.genevaparks.org or by calling 630-232-4542. Participants will start at Geneva Middle School South, at 1415 Viking Drive, Geneva, and run on the paved path around Peck Farm Park.

After the race, runners and their families are invited across the street to the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center, at 3507 Kaneville Road, Geneva, for a game day party that includes food, drinks and hoodies for purchase, as well as a football toss.

PSA showcases recipients of hearing devices

Cate McLaughlin of Batavia can hear the cheers – and constructive pointers – of her softball coaches, thanks to a charitable organization started by a Geneva student-athlete and Sarah Spain of ESPN. Hear The Cheers was created three years ago by Eliza Peters, now a freshman at Geneva High School, and her mentor, Spain, an ESPN radio host, espnW columnist and ESPN SportsCenter reporter.

The pair teamed up with the Chicago Hearing Society to raise money to supply hearing aids and other audiology devices to student-athletes in the Chicago area, believing that all athletes deserve to “hear the cheers” of the crowd as they play.

One recipient is McLaughlin, 9, who has severe hearing loss. The third-grader at Alice Gustafson School is totally dependent on hearing aids, although she reads lips and uses sign language to enhance her communication skills.

But the donation of a Roger Pen helped improve her softball game.

Hearing aids amplify all sound, including background noise, which can make it difficult for those with hearing loss to pick out individual voices in public places.

A Roger Pen, however, uses a wireless microphone to pipe the speech of one person straight into a user’s hearing aid.

“I can hear my mom in the car or my coach when I play sports,” McLaughlin said. “Normally, when we’re in the car and stuff, it’s really loud from the outside [noise of] the other cars. It helps me hear my mom more … [and] makes me feel good.”

“When she had it on, she could hear what the coaches were yelling out to the field,” added her mother, Marty McLaughlin. “It enhanced her game as well. She knew what was going on – which, to me, is huge. Because of her hearing loss, she misses a lot.”

The third-grader recently took part in a public service announcement to help raise awareness for Hear The Cheers. The PSA, put together by students at GHS, stars 15-year-old Peters, who explains that her charity has raised $81,000 in the past three years to benefit 29 student-athletes. It ends

Choosing to matter

In 2012, Spain’s co-worker, Julie Foudy – a two-time Olympic gold medalist from the U.S. women’s soccer team – founded the “Choose to Matter” contest, encouraging girls and their moms to create positive change through small, but meaningful community service projects.

Spain didn’t have a daughter, but

she recently had hit it off with Peters, who had toured a Chicago radio station with Spain to learn about sports journalism. Spain asked the then-sixthgrader for ideas on how they could choose to matter, and an interesting subject came up.

City council OKs transfer of liquor license

GENEVA – Early voting will begin Thursday as originally planned, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham announced in news release Tuesday.

Last week, he warned of delays because of ongoing objections to several presidential candidates.

The release indicated the Illinois State Board of Elections hearings have been held, and confirmation of the final certification of the candidates to be placed on the 2016 general primary ballot has been determined.

“Clerk Cunningham commends the State Board of Elections for reaching their decision,” the release states.

Early voting and in-person voting will begin Thursday at the Kane County Clerk’s Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Building B, Geneva.

Citizens may register on Election Day, but Cunningham recommends they register during grace period registration, which begins Feb. 17, to avoid long lines on Election Day, according to the release.

BATAVIA – The long-awaited opening of the new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia is expected March 11.

The new store marks a major step ahead in the ongoing redevelopment of the downtown and will clear the way for property developer Batavia Enterprises to make further improvements.

Construction is moving forward on the 14,500-square-foot facility at 122 W. Wilson St., just a few steps east of the existing Walgreens store at 138 W. Wilson St. in the Batavia Plaza shopping center.

The new stand-alone store will come complete with a prescription drive-thru lane.

Mayor Jeff Schielke said that Walgreens will keep the existing store in operation through March 10 and then open the doors to the new store the following day.

“Needless to say, it has created a lot of interest in town,” Schielke said.

The Batavia City Council on Monday approved the transfer of the existing store’s package liquor license to the new location, requiring a $50 fee, on the recommendation of Police Chief Gary Schira.

The Walgreens has occupied its current location since 1991, after the space was vacated by a Jewel store.

The Batavia Plaza, which dates to 1962, includes a variety of retail stores and restaurants, including Panera Bread, Prairie Path Cycles and Daddio’s Diner.

The construction of the new Walgreens building by Batavia Enterprises will allow the property development firm to focus on finding a new tenant for the old space.

Paul Lencioni, owner of the Blue Goose supermarket in St. Charles, has expressed interest in the Batavia Plaza as the possible site for a second location.

First Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien, who had been a critic of the use of tax increment financing district funds to help with the Walgreens project, said he nevertheless believes that Batavia Enterprises did a good job with the construction.

“It’s a beautiful building, and they’ve done a great job with that,” O’Brien said.

Brown said the public’s testimony about their fear of those who would be at the proposed facility was not based on reality.

“What they are afraid of has not been proven,” Brown said. “It is an illusion. … The law you are required to follow cannot be used upon fear.”

Objector attorney Kevin Carrera countered, among other things, that Brown is wrong because local zoning boards do not give up all their rights to the federal law.

“You did not hear law, but an impassioned speech by Mr. Brown,” Carrera said. “Facilities such as this – their patients do fall under the Fair Housing Act. However, do not be bullied into thinking that the county gives up every one of its zoning obligations in the face of the Fair Housing Act. That is not correct.”

Geneva police responded to the couple’s home on the evening of Jan. 28 after receiving a telephone call for a well-being check, police have said.

Police reportedly found Eduardo Gutierrez, 53, dead and Julia Gutierrez in need of medical assistance.

Police executed a warrant at the home at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 29, with assistance from the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force. A police presence was there throughout that day.

According to his obituary, Eduardo Gutierrez – who was known as Ed or Eddie – married his wife in December 1984 and was an active member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in North Aurora.

The church on Tuesday acknowledged his death on its Facebook page.

“This past week, a close friend passed to his rest: Ed Gutierrez,” the post states. “He was well-known and

Last year, Geneva resident Shadwick King was sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing his wife in July 2014.

Prosecutors had presented evidence that he asphyxiated his 32-year-old wife at their home, killing her. Her body was found that morning on the Union Pacific tracks near the 200 block of Briar Lane and Esping Park in Geneva.

OBITUARIES MARLENE ANN CHOUINARD Born: March 17, 1934 Died: Jan. 24, 2016

Marlene Ann Chouinard, 81, of St. Charles, Illinois, passed away on Jan. 24, 2016, at Halina’s Residential Home Care after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.

Marlene was born in Elgin, Illinois, on March 17, 1934, to William and Jeanette (Fehrman) Buhmann. She lived in the Fox Valley area for her entire adult life.

She graduated from Elgin High School and was employed as a telephone operator at Illinois Bell. Marlene was an accomplished piano accordionist and played professionally with a dance orchestra at clubs and weddings in the Elgin area. She married Gerald Chouinard on May 12, 1956. They had four children. Marlene was a volunteer at St. Patrick’s School in St. Charles as a playground lunch monitor, and also with the Humane Society of Northern Illinois for their fund drives. She loved her dogs and cats and showed her Great Dane and Himalayan cats at regional shows.

She is survived by a brother, Ronald (Judith) Buhmann; her children, Nannette Chouinard, Gregory Chouinard, Suzanne Scardamaglia and Steven Chouinard; and three grandchildren, Jonathan, Nicholas and Michael Scardamaglia. She is also survived by her former husband, Gerald Chouinard; and sisters-in-law, June (Chouinard) Lodge and Joan (VerVynck Chouinard) Larson; and nieces and nephews.

[raising funds for] hearing aids,” Spain said. “I knew she had dealt with hearing loss, but I didn’t know that hearing aids weren’t covered by insurance.”

Peters has worn hearing aids since second grade, but her family initially experienced sticker shock when they learned the devices can cost upward of $2,500 an ear, and that they last only about five years, said Amber Peters, Eliza Peters’ mother.

The entire Peters family, and Spain, jumped onboard with Eliza Peters’ idea, Spain said.

And I know she understands that she’s been very fortunate to have that.”

Eliza Peters said, initially, she wasn’t sure Hear The Cheers would last beyond a year. But the charity’s success – and a waiting list of student-athletes in need of hearing devices – has prompted her and Spain to aspire to raise $100,000 by their five-year anniversary next year.

ECC trustees committed to excellence, accountability Over the years, Elgin Community College has grown GUEST VIEW tremendously in size and scope.

Let me take this opportunity to discuss the role of ECC trustees and the part they play in helping to meet the needs of our community.

ECC, a unit of local government, is guided by the District 509 Board of Trustees, which is composed of seven elected officials and one student trustee. These community members determine what programs and services the college will offer, to whom, at what cost and with what priority.

They also assess the performance of the organization, establish policies to support the overall mission of the institution and ensure we are meeting our mission to improve people’s lives through learning. In addition, they are responsible for hiring and evaluating the college president. In other words, I am accountable to them.

ECC trustees are committed to excellence and accountability in everything the college does, including approving new programs and services. One of those programs is the Education and Work Center in Hanover Park, which was voted on and approved by the board in 2014.

The idea started four years earlier as a discussion about meeting the needs of the Hanover Park community by offering education and employment services free-of-charge to area residents.

After months of discussions, the EWC, located at 6704 Barrington Road, opened its doors to the community in fall 2014.

The program was created through an innovative partnership among multiple entities, including Elgin Community College, Harper College, the village of Hanover Park, Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, and Illinois state Rep. Fred Crespo.

The EWC is designed to serve individuals who are 16 and older who have less than a high school equivalency (GED). Classes are offered in English as a second language (ESL), adult basic education and high school equivalency in English and Spanish. The center is operated jointly by Elgin and Harper community colleges.

Services include student advising and assistance with financial aid, scholarships and college applications. The onsite Illinois workNet Center offers assistance with preparing for – and identifying – job opportunities, and links individuals with other necessary community resources in the area.

How do we know that this program fulfills a need in the community? Well, we served a total of 611 students in the first year alone. What an overwhelmingly positive response from our community!

This is one example of many successful community-driven programs that was voted on – and approved – by District 509 and 512 trustees. These trustees are committed to doing what is best for our students and our communities at large.

A lesson in regulating the other greenhouse gas BLOOMBERG VIEW

The federal government’s proposed limits on methane emissions from oil and gas wells on public land will protect the atmosphere against one of the most potent greenhouse gases known to science. Now the government needs to impose similar restrictions on wells on private land.

It’s hard to overstate how crucial it is to keep methane from escaping – quietly, invisibly – into the air.

While methane accounts for just 10 percent of U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions, it’s at least 25 times more

effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat.

And unlike carbon dioxide, which has limited commercial value (so far, anyway), methane is a fuel, and a relatively clean-burning one, so letting it slip into the air wastes money while it also hurts the climate.

The Interior Department’s proposed rules, issued Friday, would require drillers to reduce the methane that leaks or is purposely vented or flared from wells on government land, cutting the emissions from these wells by half.

This effect would be limited, however, because only 11 percent of the country’s

natural gas is extracted on public land, and only 5 percent of onshore oil production is on federal property.

To make bigger difference, tighter rules would need to be applied to oil and gas wells on private land.

The EPA moved in that direction last year, when it proposed regulations for new or modified wells on private land.

However, existing wells, which often use out-of-date technology that allows greater methane leakage, are the bigger problem, and therefore in greater need of restrictions. The EPA should follow the Interior Department’s lead.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

St. Charles co-op happy, but knows ‘still room to improve’

Geneva takes second, sends six individuals to sectionals

ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Many of the gymnasts for the St. Charles co-op girls gymnastics team were hoping to have a fully healthy come Tuesday’s IHSA Geneva Regional.

While it got two of its most important pieces back, it was two sophomores that stole the stage en route to helping the St. Charles co-op defeat Geneva and the four-team field at the Geneva Regional with a team score of 139.6.

Grace Levita was crowned allaround champion of the meet with a score of 39.975, taking first in both balance beam (8.775) and uneven bars (9.05), while taking second in vault (8.95) and floor exercise (9.2).

“It’s been one of my best meets on the season,” Levita said. “I’m definitely really excited about how today went. As a team, we really pulled it together after the first couple of events didn’t go as well as we would have hoped, and really picked up the energy on floor.”

The St. Charles co-op – who saw Devon Ross and Mychaela Guy return from injury – finished the night with the floor exercise, scoring a 36.8 as a team thanks in large part to Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci (9.4). She helped her team score the best on floor out of any event Tuesday night. Dani Buoy also helped with her fourth place finish in the all-around standings (33.95) It was hard for coach Amy Wojdelko not to crack a least a little bit of a smile as her team posed for several pictures with the regional championship plaque, but she knows that things could have went a lot better.

“There’s definitely still room to improve,” Wojdelko said. “It wasn’t our best, but I am very proud of the girls, especially after the first three events didn’t go well. It’s vital come this time of the year because it’s going to come down to either you get it or you don’t and there’s still things we can clean up.”

Wojdelko was unable to be at the team’s conference meet Saturday due to medical reasons, but said with a laugh that they “did better without me there.” Nonetheless, in a conference meet that many measure as another chance to prepare for Tuesday’ region-

Redmond-Mattucci enjoyed the setting at Geneva and felt it gave the team a sense of comfortability having performed there before.

“It’s definitely a more comfortable setting for us,” Redmond-Mattucci said. “It wasn’t my best meet, but I’m super proud of my teammates, especially Grace. We’ve all worked so hard to get to this point and I’m glad we can share this together.”

For Geneva, take the most challenging season coach Kim Hostman could have asked for, and at least double that. Dealing with a ton of injuries, including standout junior gymnast Claire Ginsberg (torn labrum), Hostman got about as strong of a performance as she could have asked from her group Tuesday night.

While the Vikings’ score of 135.175 did not advance them to the IHSA Glenbard West Sectional (Feb. 11) as an automatic qualifier, the team still holds an outside shot at receiving an at-large bid.

“The girls stepped up and did an

amazing job,” Hostman said. “I really couldn’t have asked for much more out of these girls. They did their job. I was hoping for a 135 or higher and we still have that chance to get through, but if not, all of the girls competing today got through as individuals which is a plus.”

Geneva’s top all-around gymnast, Paige Beitzel, took fifth in those standings (33.35) Tuesday night, allowing her to move on and represent the Vikings. The junior Beitzel will be joined at sectionals by Holly Friedel (balance beam), freshmen Gracie DeVita and Sophia Hostasa (uneven bars) and Molly Lambillotte and Sam DelGuidice (vault).

Both sophomores, Lambillotte scored an 8.895 on vault to and Friedel added 8.575 on bars to take third in their respective events for Geneva’s highest individual finishers.

“These girls got so much experience and will continue to get it as we move into sectionals and the years to come,” Hostman added. “I’m excited for what the future holds for a number of the girls and this program.”

Even more fitting was Frazier knocking down 3 of 4 free throws in the final 23.2 seconds to ice the game for Batavia. Once the buzzer sounded and the game was in hand, Frazier was given the game ball as an ear-to-ear smile came to her face, and her teammates congratulated her once more.

“I think she realizes the importance of it. I think she realizes it’s an accomplishment, but she didn’t set out this season with the thought of ‘I’m going to break a scoring record,’” Jensen said. “It’s ‘I want to win games.’”

There’s more history on the horizon for Frazier, however. Unofficially, Frazier pulled down nine rebounds Tuesday night, putting her three away from 1,000 in her career. She’ll have the opportunity to reach the rebounding mark on Friday in a matchup against rival Geneva.

Depending on how deep Batavia goes in the playoffs, she could join an exclusive 2,000 (point)/1,000 (rebound) club and become the first Batavia player – boy or girl – to reach 2,000 points.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling, it feels great to get it done,” Frazier said.

“Just the fact that everyone was here to see me do it and all my friends were cheering me on, it was really cool.”

ELGIN – Four years of hard work, effort and a whole lot of baskets led Batavia’s Hannah Frazier to breaking a Batavia record Tuesday night at Larkin.

Frazier set the all-time scoring record at Batavia less than a minute into the second quarter, en route to a 25-point night and a 65-58 victory for the Bulldogs over Larkin.

The senior forward entered the game needing only eight points to break the school’s all-time mark, previously held with 1,921 points by guard Liza Fruendt; the pair were teammates for two seasons during Frazier’s freshman and sophomore seasons for the Bulldogs.

“It makes it that much more special,” Frazier said of breaking her former teammate’s record. “I always looked up to her and she was such a good competitor. She was always pushing me and to feel like I’m at that level, it’s really cool.”

“It is kind of hard to believe, with how dynamic Liza was, that two years later her record is already broken,” Batavia head coach Kevin Jensen said.

Needing only eight points to set the record, Frazier nailed a stepback jumper in the lane less than a minute into the second quarter and was fouled on the play. With all the Batavia faithful on the verge of celebration, Frazier calmly stepped to the line and made the free throw to set the record, sending the Bulldogs fans and players into a frenzy as the game stopped to recognize the achievement.

“I was just thinking after I made that shot, ‘Oh (no), I’ve got to make this free throw.’ It would have been so embarrassing (to miss) because they were all ready to celebrate. So I’m glad I put it in,” Frazier said.

It was a fitting way to set the new all-time mark, as Frazier has lived at the free-throw line during her career.

Tuesday was no exception, as she was an efficient 13-of-15 from the charity stripe.

“A lot of times, girls get fouled and they fall down or they can’t get the ball to the rim. A lot of times, she gets hit hard and looks unfazed because she’s so strong,” Jensen said. “She’s just so strong inside.”

For the rest of the game, the Bulldogs weren’t at their best – the team was also missing three players because of a school music obligation – but Batavia held off a staunch effort from the Royals. Hailey Orman added 18 points with a pair of 3-pointers,

Jakaitis hits scoring milestone in win

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North girls basketball team took care of a couple milestones and then took care of Streamwood in Tuesday’s Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

After senior Claire Jakaitis scored the 1,000th point of her high school career and classmate Kyla Helsel canned her 100th career three-pointer, the North Stars got down to business and beat the Sa- Claire bres, 62-34.

Jakaitis, a Loyola University Maryland recruit, started the game with 999 points.

Streamwood defenders made it tough for North the get the ball inside to Jakaitis at the start of the game, but finally halfway through the first quarter, guard Sammy Sample found Jakaitis open underneath and passed her the ball. The forward finished a left-handed layup to pass the 1,000-point mark.

Jakaitis finished the night with 11 points.

Jakaitis transferred to North from Montini after her sophomore year.

“It’s really great,” Jakaitis said about hitting the 1,000-point mark. ”I had a lot of great teammates that put me in position to get a thousand points.”

A minute later, Helsel (eight points) found herself open on the right wing and canned her 100th career three-pointer.

“Kyla has always been our unsung hero,” Masoncup said. “She never really gets the lime light but she does a great job and when she can score from the outside, that opens up the inside.”

Streamwood (5-19, 3-8 UEC River) kept pace with the North Stars in the first half of the game.

The teams were tied at nine at the end of the first quarter, and North lead by six at the half, 22-16.

The North Stars (13-8, 5-4) turned up the defensive pressure in the second half. North went into a press defense and forced 11 turnovers from the Sabres.

North also controlled the glass, out-rebounding Streamwood, 26-14.

“We started out slow but once we got going it was a different story,” Masoncup said. ”I thought we really asserted ourselves in the second half. We did a pretty good job defensively.”

The North Stars broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Streamwood, 18-7, to take a 40-28 lead to start the fourth quarter.

“They put pressure on you offensively and defensively, and when you make mistakes, you are going to pay for them,” Streamwood coach George Rosner said. “In the first half, we did not have as many mistakes. Then they put the press on and then we get into that rut where we throw the ball away two or three times in a row and the score goes the other way.”

Eleven North Stars scored including all six seniors. Morgan Rosencrants led all scorers with 13 points.

Knights attack paint, cruise past DeKalb

editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland has punished plenty of teams with its long-range accuracy this season.

On Tuesday, the Knights did it with the highest percentage shot in basketball – the layup.

The Knights made 13 of them and it was more than enough to beat DeKalb, 56-32, in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East Division contest.

“We’ve been preaching that to the girls because they’re shooting a high percentage inside the 3-point line,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said. “We’re up to about 48-percent from twos which is pretty incredible for girls hoops.”

Camri Conley led that style of attack, scoring a game-high 16 points.

“Colombe talked about trying to get it inside,” she said. “We tried to get in inside early and it really worked so we kept doing it.”

Kylie Modaff and Jenni Weber have

each had their share of huge games from beyond the three-point line this season, but with the ability to attack the basket rather than fire away readily accessible, their jumpshots took a rest.

The Knights made only 1-of-10 of their 3-point attempts as Modaff connected late in the second quarter.

“Sometimes the girls settle and fall in the love with the three and they don’t have to do that,” Colombe said. “The three-point shots are going to be there throughout the night, but they had trouble guarding, and anytime Camri gets into the lane deep a lot of good things happen.”

Kaneland (19-3, 7-3 NI Big 12 East) led 17-14 after one quarter but was struggling defensively.

The Knights turned up the pressure in the second quarter, outscoring the Barbs, 13-6, to take a 30-20 lead at halftime.

“They came out with a hot hand,” Conley said. “We didn’t communicate well at the start, but then, we started to pick it up and figure out what they were doing.”

DeKalb (6-20, 3-9) might have hoped that the halftime break would give it a chance to recharge and return to the offensive form it displayed early, but such never materialized. The Barbs didn’t have a field goal in the third quarter, which allowed the Knights to break the game open.

Jamie Martens knocked down a pullup jumper with 2:25 left in the quarter to give the Knights a 41-21 lead. The Knights would then proceed to score the final five points of the quarter, outscoring the Barbs 16-1, to take a 46-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

“Once we started getting loose balls and shutting down the lane, it was tough for them to score,” Colombe said. “Whenever you hold a high school team that talented to one point in a quarter, that’s a great job.”

Vanessa Gould, Bailey Crimmins and Jamie Martens each scored seven points for the Knights. Crimmins added five blocks. The Knights forced 21 turnovers, but were out-rebounded, 45-29.

St. Charles East senior guard J.T. Ford has been one of the more consistent players for coach Pat Woods this season. While trailing late in Saturday’s game against St. Charles North, Ford knocked down a 3-pointer before drilling the game-winning jumper as time expired to send the Saints and their fans home happy. Ford, the Kane County Chronicle/St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, scored 17 points in the game. He caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey to discuss his game-winning shot and what the win meant for his team. An edited transcript follows: That last possession went from chaos to elation, what happened in that game?

(North) had the original pass covered, so I just took a shot in rhythm and, yeah, it went in. It was kind of lucky to be honest.

How tough was that shot?

It was definitely well-defended. I had to double clutch it. When I let it go, I was just kind of praying it went in.

Any game-winners in your basketball career before this one?

No, not that I can remember. Nothing like this, that’s for sure.

You guys lost to Elgin Friday, and were trailing pretty much the entire game (against North) before your shot, what did it take to fight back in that game?

Confidence, honestly. We got off to a slow start and weren’t hitting shots. At halftime, coach (Woods) just told us to be more confident when we’re shooting and we came out, shots starting falling, which got us more confident. It wasn’t pretty, but we found a way to get it done.

There are other options, too. See if colleagues will agree to a true “standing meeting.” Get up and walk to your co-worker’s office rather than relying heavily on email.

Here are a few other suggestions to incorporate throughout your day: • Set an alarm to go off every 30 to 60 minutes during the day. When it rings, get up and walk around. I use this trick myself.

• Pace during phone calls. Stand up and walk around when you’re on the phone. I use this one, too.

• Make TV time less sedentary. Watch TV standing up instead of sitting down. If you’re really motivated, march in place or swing your arms. I’m considering this one.

I spend a lot of time sitting at my computer, writing this column (and other things). Roughly every half-hour, I get up, walk around, walk up and down one flight of stairs and wave my arms around. I’m convinced it makes me less stiff.

Also, several studies have shown constant fidgeting can burn off close to 300 calories a day, which helps control your weight. By fidgeting, I refer to things such as pacing the floor or just constantly shifting your weight or wiggling around in your chair.

We’re not talking about training for a triathlon here – just some simple changes that won’t even cause you to break a sweat.

Dr. Wallace: Is there ever a time when you would agree to let a teen stay at her school rather than accompany her family on a move to another city?

Our daughter is in the 11th grade and is doing everything she can to convince us it would be in her best interest to stay at her high school until she graduates, rather than move with her younger sister and her parents to Pittsburgh, where my husband has been transferred.

Ashley is an excellent student and very popular. She is treasurer for her junior class and president of the pep squad. She was planning to run for student body president next year.

We are a close-knit family, and not having our daughter with us for more than a year is not our wish.

Ashley said she would be with us during summer break and at all school breaks of a week or more. She would be able to live with my sister and her family. I also need to mention Ashley’s boyfriend is a star athlete at her high school. –- Mother, Erie, Pennsylvania Mother: This is a tough

call. As a former high school principal, I can sympathize with your family’s dilemma.

Naturally, I believe under most circumstances families should stay together and not be fragmented by a move. But I generally make an exception if the student is in, or about to enter, the 12th grade and can live with a relative or close family friend.

Ashley is only in the 11th grade. She still has a lot of time left in her high school career – to make new friends and find her way into the social life of her new school. If she stayed in Erie, she would be separated from her family for a long time. All of this leads me to advise she go with you to Pittsburgh.

Still, I recognize this is a borderline situation, especially considering Ashley’s ambition to be class president next year. Without her family around her for support, would she still want such a responsibility?

You need to make this call, based on her level of self-reliance and maturity. The discussions you have leading to a decision everyone can accept will strengthen your family no matter what you ultimately decide.

Since Erie is only about 125 miles from Pittsburgh, the family would be able to see Ashley often if the final answer is she will remain living in Erie with your sister.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19, and recently filled out an application to work as a food server at a nice restaurant. I really would like the job. One of the questions was, “Do you now smoke?” My answer was “no.”

The next question was, “Have you ever smoked?” I had to think a few minutes, and then I answered “no.”

When I was 14, my best friend swiped a pack of cigarettes from her mom and she talked me into smoking one.

It’s the only time I ever had a lit cigarette in my mouth. I tried to inhale the smoke, but I started coughing and never really got any smoke down into my lungs.

To this day I regret I “smoked” that one cigarette.

Should I have been totally honest and answered the question with a yes answer?

Dear Dr. K: Several of my colleagues have switched to standing desks. Does standing really make that much of a difference to your health?

Dear Reader: Research suggests the more we sit, the more we’re likely to develop heart disease and other illnesses, including diabetes and cancer. Whether it’s sitting at the computer to get some work done or on the couch watching TV, too many hours spent on our bottoms increases the risk of dying from any cause – even if you exercise regularly.

Think of it this way: Say you sleep for eight hours. That leaves 16 hours in your day. Even the most physically active among us, who exercise one or even two hours a day, still have 14 hours to fill. That’s a lot of time.

A study recently published in the European Heart Journal suggests spending more of that time standing, as opposed to sitting, can have a big impact on your health. For the study, researchers monitored the activity levels of roughly 700 adults to determine how much time they spent sitting, standing, walking slowly and walking at a moderate to vigorous pace.

Every two hours a day spent sitting was associated with an increase in weight and waist size, as well as in levels of blood sugar and cholesterol.

As you might expect, time spent walking rather than sitting not only lowered cholesterol and blood sugar levels, but also reduced waist size and weight. Perhaps more surprisingly, simply substituting two hours of standing for sitting also improved blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Sometimes at the bridge table, if you want to have a winning game, you have to make daring bids and plays.

The North-South spade suit, contract and opening lead are the same as the last two days, but there the similarities end. How should South try to make three no-trump after West leads the spade five?

West opened with a weak two-bid, showing a decent six-card suit and some 5-10 points. Over North’s takeout double, South would have preferred a stronger spade holding for his threeno-trump bid, but with such a flat hand, he did not expect that five of a minor would make.

South has eight top tricks: one spade (because of the lead), four hearts and three clubs. He must play on diamonds for the extra winner. But that means losing the lead twice, and the opponents are threatening to win too many tricks.

On the previous two days, it was right for declarer immediately to put up dummy’s spade queen. Then his follow-up play was determined by what happened at that trick.

Here, though, suppose South does that. If he wins the trick and plays a diamond, East takes the trick and returns his second spade. West runs the suit for down two. Or, if East takes the queen with the ace and leads back his second spade, West will surely have a high diamond as an entry card.

The secret is to play low from the dummy and low from hand too. South will succeed whenever the contract is makable.
