Super snowy shuffle

Weather can’t stop 100s from participating in Geneva race

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The driving snow started bothering Geneva resident Morgan Connell during the last leg of Sunday’s Super Shuffle 5K. “That was the real test,” Connell said. “It was hard to see.”

The snow and wind provided a few challenges to Connell and others participating in the Geneva Park District event, which helps raise funds for the park district’s scholarship fund for needy families.

This was the fifth year of the event.

“Getting one’s footing was a little bit difficult because of the snow,” said Connell, who ran the 3.1-mile race for the first time Sunday.

After the race, Connell and other race participants along with their families were relaxing at a post-race celebration at the Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center.

Despite the snowy weather, Batavia resident Eric Wedow decided to run the race shirtless.

“I’ve run shirtless in colder weather,” Wedow said.

“There is nothing like running a race in the middle of a blizzard. It gives everybody something to talk about afterwards.”

By the evening, the storm had dumped more than a foot of snow on parts of central Kane County.

A blizzard warning was in effect throughout the day.

The storm caused about 200 people to drop out of the race, Geneva Park District Executive Director Sheavoun Lambillotte said.

“We had 670 people sign up, and just 400 came to the event,” Lambillotte said. “I am surprised so many people showed up.”

Lambillotte has participated in every race, and she wasn’t about to miss this year’s race.

“I live in Geneva and started digging out at 7:30 a.m. to get here,” she said.

This isn’t the first time Super Shuffle 5K organizers have had to deal with lessthan-ideal conditions.

Last year, extremely cold temperatures, along with snow and ice, greeted participants.

Geneva Park District officials were out at 3 a.m. Sunday getting Geneva Middle School South’s parking lot ready for the arrival of the participants.

“This is the first time we’ve had near-blizzard conditions during the race,” said Larry Gabriel, the park district’s superintendent of parks and properties.

As in past years, Gabriel participated in Sunday’s race.

“There is a true spirit of camaraderie among the runners,” he said.

Elburn residents: Keep village’s police department

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Residents packed Monday night’s Elburn Village Board meeting as the board addressed the future of the village’s police department.

Those who spoke told board members that they would be against disbanding the Elburn Police Department. Village President Dave Anderson, citing the village’s police pension obligations, has said such a step is possible. If the village were to take that step, police protection would be provided by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Anderson invited questions from the public, and he responded to them. Anderson had pointed out that police protection takes up 58 percent of the village’s general fund budgets.

Trustee Bill Grabarek previously said the pensions took up $122,000 of the general fund last year. Anderson said village services have been suffering because of the cost of the police pensions.

Ken Gustafson, a member of the village’s police pension board, said he didn’t believe residents would vote against providing the money needed to

keep a police department.

“We want coverage here,” Gustafson said.

Anderson noted that residents in 2012 rejected a referendum proposal to create a new property tax levy specifically to fund police pensions.

Elburn resident Wylie Overly, who serves on the village’s police commission, said Elburn is “on the verge of booming.” He said going to sheriff coverage “would be one heck of a digression.”

Another resident, Dave Broz, said residents would support village leaders in what they seek, but he said there needed to be a spirit of cooperation.

“I think you need to earn the trust of the village back,” Broz said, telling Anderson that the issue “already has kind of taken off.”

Anderson said no decision had been made. He said he understood residents were angry at the thought of disbanding the

department, but he said “where is the money going to come from?” He said it’s possible the sheriff’s office could provide an equal amount of coverage, adding “we have to investigate it.”

“If I were sitting where you were, I might say the same thing,” Anderson said. “Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Don’t do it. …

But don’t raise my taxes.”

Some board members and residents asked about the possibility for a future referendum.

That option would have to wait.

The deadline has passed to add referendums to the ballot for the April election, and there are no elections scheduled for November.

Trustee Craig Swan, who was appointed to finish Ethan Hastert’s term on the board and is not seeking election in April, said he would fight to keep the police department. He also wanted residents to understand that Anderson wasn’t working to disband the police department.

“Do not get it in your heads that this man wants to get rid of the police department,” Swan said. “It’s not true.”

Anderson said the board would continue to discuss the issue.

STC deputy police chief, commander honored

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles police commander and a deputy police chief Monday were recognized for different achievements at the St. Charles City Council meeting.

Jerry Gatlin was honored for his graduation from the FBI National Academy in December. He is a 17-year veteran of the department, St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan said after the meeting.

St. Charles Deputy Police Chief David Kintz was first recognized for recently being appointed as the 2015 president of the Kane County Chiefs of Police Association, then St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan had a surprise for him.

Hidden behind the central podium Keegan was speaking at was a St. Charles Police Department Award of Merit for Kintz, who accepted the award in front of his family.

“We’re very happy and proud of you,” St. Charles

Mayor Ray Rogina said to Kintz.

Rogina had a similar message for Gatlin, and both he and Kintz thanked Rogina and the city for their words of praise.

Kintz received the Award of Merit for his 24 years with St. Charles police, as well his numerous contributions to the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, Keegan said.

In 2005, Kintz took on a lead role to form the reconstruction team and is an active crash investigator, Keegan said. Kintz has been involved in more than 200 major crash investigations, most of which were fatal incidents, he said.

Gatlin joins Keegan and Kintz as a FBI National Academy graduate, which make up less than 1 percent of the country’s law enforcement officers.

Gatlin was one of 215 selected command officers to attend the 11-week course at the FBI Training Academy, located at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia, Keegan said.

Geneva OKs boundary pact with St. Charles

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva aldermen unanimously approved a new boundary agreement with the city of St. Charles on Monday, which simply extends an existing 20-year agreement for another two decades until 2035.

The new agreement does not change the language of the original, dated July 6, 1995, and set to expire July 6 this year, officials said. Staff members of both cities met in August to discuss extending the agreement before its expiration this summer, officials said.

The agreement means that neither city can annex or exercise zoning or subdivision control authority over land inside the boundary of the other city, officials said.

Both cities also agree to cooperate on water and sewer services and reimbursements for road, traffic, signal or traffic-related costs that are incurred along the boundary line, officials said.

“The boundary agreement underscores the longstanding relationship we have with our friends in St. Charles,” Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“The agreement puts into

place a mutual understanding of how we work together on those properties abutting each other, street maintenance, etcetera,” Burns said. “While a housekeeping issue, I think it also sends a very powerful message that good boundary agreements make good neighbors.”

The agreement also includes Kane County and DuPage County, because part of St. Charles also is in DuPage, Burns said.

St. Charles aldermen also approved the boundary agreement at its Monday meeting. Both cities have copies of the agreement on their websites, www.geneva. il.us and www.stcharlesil.gov.

“It was nice to have the day off, to hang out with some friends and do some sledding and play in the snow.”

Area school districts canceled classes Monday in the aftermath of Sunday’s blizzard, which dumped about 16 inches of snow on communities such as Batavia, North Aurora and St. Charles, according to the National Weather Service.

Elburn saw the most snow in central Kane County – 17.2 inches – according to the weather service.

“I was waiting for it,” Doherty said. “This is more than I expected we would get. I was expecting we would get about 6 inches.”

McCue also was happy to see the snow.

“I like the fresh powder,” McCue said. “I live down the street, so I’ve been coming here my whole life.”

Chicago saw 19.3 inches of snow at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, which ranks fifth out of all snowfall events for Chicago, according to the National Weather Service.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Pat Gengler stated that road conditions had improved Monday, but the roads still were not totally clear.

“What we saw this morning was more icy conditions,” Gengler wrote in an email. “Most of the roads were clear of the snow buildup, but there was some

“It’s not recommended for ice skating right now because there are plenty of cracks in the ice as of now,” she said.

Customers for the past two days have been flocking to Ace Hardware at 1901 W. Wilson St. in Batavia for winter supplies, such as snow shovels and snow blowers.

“On Sunday, we had 75 customers,” Ace Hardware employee Tom Croft said.

“It’s more than I figured we would have. I thought it would be really slow.”

The store has sold several snow blowers in the past two days, he said.

Thanks to the storm, some who bought furniture at the Art Van Furniture store in Batavia will be getting it free as part of the retailer’s “Let It Snow” promotion. As part of the promotion, those who bought furniture at Art Van Furniture’s stores – including the store at 165 N. Randall Road in Batavia – on Jan. 1, 2, 3 and 17, won’t be paying for it since it snowed more than 3 inches in the area.

More than 1,900 people took advantage of the promotion, said Diane Charles, director of corporate communications for Art Van Furniture. The promotion was covered by an insurance policy, she said.

“It was kind of fun to bet on the weather,” Charles said. “We were overjoyed with the snow. We knew we could make some 2,000 people happy. It was the bright spot of the snowstorm.”

Once a resident of that part of the city, Murphy said she wanted to see St. Charles revived and wondered how she could help.

Murphy found her answer in a riverfront Fox Island Square suite.

“I always loved the space,” she said.

In about two months, she transformed Suite 180 into Bombshell Blowout Boutique, a blow-dry bar that offers such services as blowouts, updos, facials, makeup application and massages.

It also is available for

groups, including bridal and prom parties.

Although Bombshell hasn’t opened yet – the target date is Feb. 9 – Murphy welcomed visitors to the 1 W. Illinois St. space Saturday evening for an open house.

“She’s definitely pulled this together,” her husband, Brian Murphy, said. “It was a shell.”

As Meredith Murphy led visitors around the boutique, she pointed out features she handcrafted, salvaged from Goodwill and got for a discount.

But, she stressed, not all the handiwork was hers.

Friends came out of the woodwork to help with such tasks as painting and scrubbing floors, she said.

“Everyone played a role,” she said.

A Feb. 24 consolidated primary election will be held in Kane County only for the village of Campton Hills, County Clerk Jack Cunningham announced Monday in a news release.

Dates associated with the February primary affect only people residing in Campton Hills, the release states.

Campton Hills residents who still need to register or change their voter registration may utilize grace period registration for the consolidated primary, according to the release. Grace period registration began Monday and will continue until Feb. 21 at the Kane County Clerk’s Office, located in Building B at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Geneva.

Once registered, voters will cast their ballots during the consolidated primary grace period. Voter registration will continue for all oth-

er Kane County residents, the release states.

To register, a person must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old on or before the date of the next election, a resident of the precinct for 30 days before the election, and provide two forms of identification, one of which shows a current name and address.

The county clerk’s office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for voter registration.

Early voting for the consolidated primary will be from Feb. 9 through Feb. 21.

After the Feb. 24 consolidated primary, registration will resume Feb. 26 for Campton Hills residents.

Kane County residents may check their registration online by going to www.kanecountyelections.org, clicking on “Are you registered” and following the directions on the page.

Voters can call the clerk’s voter registration office for more information at 630-2325990.

WOODSTOCK – The weekend’s storm may be over, but there still is a long way to go, according to Woodstock Willie, who reluctantly clambered out of his tree stump Monday morning only to see his dreaded shadow.

Despite the news that six more weeks of winter are yet to come, the people who gathered to watch the local tradition seemed to be having a good time. Minutes before Willie was set to emerge, residents and visitors shivered over to the Woodstock Square in anticipation of his appearance.

One couple from Oak Lawn braved Sunday’s blizzard just to be there.

“Well, we booked it a week and a half ago,” Brett Glaser said.

Glaser’s girlfriend, Carla Trezzo, added that they weren’t about to let the storm stop them from seeing in person what they only knew existed one year ago.

“We heard about it last year, and I just thought it was so funny,” Trezzo said. “And it was something different to do.”

That’s the great thing about the Woodstock tradition – it brings people from everywhere, said Rick Bellairs, a member of the Woodstock Groundhog Days Committee.

He pointed out that people came from Los Angeles and Louisville.

There was even a couple from Germany.

“Considering the weather, I think we had a good turnout,” Bellairs said, adding that there were probably about 150 people.

He and the other committee members repeatedly sang the praises of the city of Woodstock for its efforts to clear the streets overnight to allow the event to continue.

After the “seer of all seers” signaled an extended winter, the crowd dispersed to nearby restaurants and businesses to enjoy the last day of a weeklong celebration.

ROBERT S. TRAVIS Born: Oct. 23, 1926 Died: Jan. 30, 2015 Robert Spencer Travis, age 88, a longtime resident of St. Charles, Illinois passed away on January 30, 2015.

He was born October 23, 1926, in Marengo, Illinois to Spencer and Hazel Travis.

Robert (Bob) was a longtime member of the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church. He served in the US Navy in the 1940s before he began work in 1947 at Suburban Buick in Wheaton, Illinois. Soon after, in 1947, Bob was moved to a sales position, and he worked as a Suburban Buick salesman until 2008, retiring at age 82. A lover of cars, Bob sold thousands of cars to generations of families. They called him “Mr. Buick.” He was recognized after 50 years of service and again after 60 years of service.

He enjoyed many friendships with the Suburban Buick family. Away from work, Bob loved spending time with his wife of nearly 64 years, Peggy Ann Travis. They married on

11 December 9, 1950 and made St. Charles their home. Bob enjoyed the sunshine, being outside and spending vacations with Peggy in Naples, Florida.

Bob is survived by his 27 nieces and nephews and his many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, earlier this year; his parents, Spencer and Hazel Travis; his sister and brother-in-law, Georgiana and George Schwickrath; his nephew, James Franklin Davis; and his niece, Robin Lee Hemming.

Although all family and friends were special to Bob, nieces, Sherrie Schwickrath Davis and Lisa Hemming Forni were especially important as were dear friends, Masha, Richard,

and Jeff.

ST. CHARLES – The Downtown St. Charles Partnership is accepting applications for a new event that involves placing decorated Adirondack chairs throughout downtown, the organization announced Monday in a news release.

The “Chair-ity” event is set to run from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. “It’s a new event that encourages creating something out of the ordinary with visual interest, and is a great way

to showcase our beautiful downtown,” Director Lynne Schwartz said in the release.

“It gives people a reason to explore, a way to discover new parts of the city, and a reason to stay.”

Volunteer Chuck Parr of St. Charles came up with the idea.

The release indicates he was inspired by the city of Chicago’s Cows on Parade in 1999.

Any individual, group or business can participate, and participants may donate the chair for auction at the end of the event, according to the release.

See-minus: The trouble with eyewitnesses

By THOMAS ALBRIGHT and JED RAKOFF Special to The Washington Post Over the past quarter-century, more than 1,400 people convicted of serious crimes have been proved innocent, according to the University of Michigan Law School’s National Registry of Exonerations.

But why were these people wrongly convicted? In a great many cases, one significant factor was faulty eyewitness identifications.

Eyewitness testimony can be extremely powerful. When a witness with no motive to lie swears under oath that he or she personally saw a defendant commit a crime, it is hard not to believe the testimony. But in recent decades, extensive scientific research

– which we reviewed while co-chairing the National Research Council committee that wrote the recent report “Identifying the Culprit: Assessing Eyewitness Identification” – has identified a number of factors that can lead an eyewitness to make a mistake. It is time our legal system started making use of this knowledge.

When judges and juries lack awareness of the factors that can affect the accuracy of eyewitness testimony, they can make mistakes.

In 1967, for example, before most of this research, the Supreme Court ruled, in Manson vs. Braithwaite, that the reliability of an eyewitness’s identification, and hence its admissibility as evidence, depends – in part – on the level of certainty that the

witness expresses when identifying a defendant in court.

This, in the view of the court, was simply common sense.

But the court was wrong.

Careful studies have demonstrated that, regardless of the level of certainty an eyewitness expresses at the time of original identification (which itself may be affected by numerous factors), a witness’ confidence in the correctness of the identification steadily increases over time. This occurs for psychological and cognitive reasons that have nothing to do with the accuracy of the identification, such as reinforcement of a witness’ beliefs by law enforcement and accounts of events promulgated by attorneys and news media.

If we want to avoid making the same tragic mistakes

again and again, all of us – police, prosecutors, judges, jurors, public officeholders and the public – must act on this research. Here is how: First, lineups should be administered according to the same kind of “double-blind” standards used in scientific testing. For example, the police officer administering the lineup should not be involved in the investigation. An eyewitness should be told that the lineup may or may not include a suspect and that the investigation will continue regardless of whether someone is identified. In addition, lineups should be videotaped.

Second, the level of confidence the eyewitness expresses at the time of the initial identification should be documented and made

available at trial.

Third, judges should be educated about the well-documented failings of lineups.

This knowledge will put judges in a better position to evaluate whether eyewitness identification evidence should be included in a particular case.

Fourth, through expert testimony or judicial instructions, jurors should be educated about the many factors that can affect eyewitness identification and that those need to be considered in evaluating the reliability of an eyewitness’s testimony.

There’s no such thing as a “free” government program.

Nothing is ever “free.” “Free” is just a slick marketing term to help hide tax-and-spend addictions.

These types of proposals reveal that politicians view taxpayers as nothing but unlimited sources of revenue footing the bill for their agenda. The truth is, far too many public officials continue to expand the size and spending of government but are woefully inconsiderate about the debt they continually pile on working families and their children.

Bottom line: Taxpayers cannot afford Obama’s “free” college proposal.

Coffey shines at Night of Hoops for slumping Bulldogs

ATAVIA – Canaan Coffey is a Night of Hoops veteran, even though the majority of his time in Batavia’s gymnasium for the program’s signature night have come as a spectator, cheering on his big brothers.

He’s witnessed some strong showings from older brothers Jordan, Jesse and Micah over the years, and on Saturday, he added a memorable performance of his own, pouring in 27 points against powerhouse West Aurora, albeit in a 68-51 Batavia loss.

Coffey acknowledged a tinge of satisfaction in performing so well on the prestigious Night of Hoops stage.

“A little bit, but I just wish we could have pulled out the win,” Coffey said. “That win would have been huge coming into this next week, trying to pick up another win on Thursday (at Streamwood) and trying to keep the momentum and keep this rolling into the playoffs. But it was a tough one.”

Coffey made six 3-pointers to stem the Blackhawks’ momentum, but Batavia’s defensive struggles and trouble creating high-percentage shots against West Aurora’s defense led to a third straight loss for the Bulldogs (13-12), after setbacks against Upstate Eight Conference River powers Geneva and St. Charles East.

Coffey, a junior guard, is averaging a team-best 14.2 points a game. His free-throw percentage for the season is up to 84 percent after making a combined 14 of 14 in weekend matchups with the Saints and Blackhawks.

“He’s been consistent all year,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “He’ll be the first to say maybe he’d take a couple less 3s to be in a two-point game and have a battle there at the end but he got some of those good looks in the first half and I’ll never tell him

Like his brothers, Coffey is a multisport standout for Batavia, fresh off a fall in which he emerged as the go-to receiver for the Bulldogs’ conference champion football team.

Although Micah Coffey is a freshman in Minnesota’s

baseball program and Jordan played college baseball at Taylor University (Ind.), Canaan said he’s planning to follow the trajectory of Jesse and pursue college basketball, possibly at Taylor, where Jesse currently plays.

“I’ve always kind of liked basketball a little bit more,” said Coffey, adding that Indiana Wesleyan and Hope College are among the other schools with which he’s been in contact. “I mean both [foot-

ball and basketball] I just love playing, but my whole life I’ve just kind of liked basketball just a little more.”

He credited Jesse with helping him break out as a junior, his second season on varsity for the Bulldogs.

“Jesse especially, just because he’s playing at that high level right now, he’s been awesome to work with and to do workouts with,” Coffey said. “He’s pushing me all the time. And my dad is the best because he knows what I’m doing wrong all the time. Even if I don’t like him coaching me, I just have to listen to him because I know he knows what he’s talking about.”

Batavia was 13-9 and had plenty of momentum until high-level competition proved too much for the Bulldogs their past three outings. Batavia played Geneva (now 20-2) competitively before sputtering over the weekend against East and West Aurora.

Thursday’s game at struggling Streamwood presents a prime opportunity for the Bulldogs to regroup.

“We just can’t put our heads down,” Coffey said.

“We’ve got to keep our heads up and just have hard practices, go at each other, be intense. We can’t have any letdown. Even though we’ve had these past few games, we just need to clear up a few mistakes, look at the positives and be happy with those, but then we’ve just got to learn from the negatives, too, and work with those and work on those to get our team better.”

Although Night of Hoops didn’t go well for the Bulldogs, Coffey said it was a thrill to take part in the well-attended event, now named after longtime former Bulldogs coach Jim Roberts.

“Since Jordan and Jesse have been playing here, I don’t think I’ve missed one,” Coffey said. “It’s an awesome night, and now that we honor Jim and Sylvia Roberts, it just makes it that much better, just honoring the tradition here.”

The Bulldogs were especially reliant on Coffey, who poured in a game-high 27 points, 18 of those coming from beyond the arc. Junior guard Kamontez Thomas added 11 points for the Bulldogs, who came no closer than 11 points during the second half.

Mooseheart falls to York The Mooseheart boys basketball team fell apart during the middle portion of its Night of Hoops matchup with York as the Dukes went on a 30-2 blitz spanning the entire second quarter and the first 3:30 minutes of the third quarter.

Mooseheart (12-8) was within 11-9 of York after the first quarter but the Dukes ballooned their lead to 41-11 before the Ramblers finally ended the painful drought with a Josh Gordon layup during the third quarter.

The Class 1A Ramblers came in a heavy underdog against 4A York, which improved to 13-9 with the 62-45 win.

One night after spotting St. Charles East a swift 10-0 lead, the Bulldogs dug a deeper hole, 12-0, to West Aurora on Saturday during a 68-51 loss to the Blackhawks in the nightcap of the 22nd annual Jim & Sylvia Roberts Batavia Night of Hoops.

“We don’t come out aggressive,” Batavia junior guard Canaan Coffey said. “The other team gets the ball and pushes it and gets offensive rebounds early in games, which is exactly what we don’t want them to do.

We just need to focus on coming out strong, and finishing, as well.”

The Bulldogs (13-12) missed their first 11 shots before Coffey drilled a trio of 3-pointers to bring Batavia within 14-9 by the end of the quarter. But the Blackhawks renewed their surge in the second quarter, replenishing their lead to 13 by halftime.

Other than the rotten start, the Bulldogs were mostly competitive against the favored Blackhawks (14-6).

“It’s kind of random,” Coffey said of Batavia’s early-game

woes. “Sometimes we feel intimidated by teams, teams that we know that have a good reputation, a good record, are good on paper. We just come out slow.

We need to come out intense, intense, intense and just be active everywhere.”

West Aurora boasts a Division I recruit in Illinois Statebound wing Roland Griffin.

While Griffin (19 points, nine rebounds) was effective, Blackhawks guard Marquis Howard proved even more of a handful, counting four 3-pointers among his 24 points.

Howard said the Blackhawks derived inspiration from a hotly contested Benet-Highland Park game that preceded the Batavia-West Aurora matchup.

“Coach [Gordie Kerkman] was talking about how aggressive both teams played, and he wanted us to play like that, so that’s what we tried to do,” Howard said.

The loss was the third straight for Batavia, albeit against the team’s third straight quality opponent after previous setbacks to Geneva and St. Charles East.

Shallow pool for Schalz to mold this winter Even when he’s submerged under water, Marmion boys swimmer Andrew Kasper figures he can at least sense the scope of coach Bill Schalz’s tutelage.

With only nine varsity Cadets on deck this season, there’s a whole lot more of Schalz – warbled and otherwise – to go around.

Urgency is in full stock, too.

“Definitely, with a small team, you get more attention with Bill, so you get more one-on-one coaching,” said Kasper, a senior from Batavia.

“But definitely when it comes to meets, it’s hard to score, so we’ve got to kind of make up for those lost numbers. We’ve got to get to the wall as fast as possible.”

Schalz coaches Marmion’s sister school, Rosary, during girls season, and is no stranger to windfalls of success for either side.

That makes this temporary shortage nearly unprecedented. At least Schalz saw it coming, citing the surplus of “pretty good-sized classes” who have graduated in recent springs.

In 2014, that group included Wayne resident Mike Burke and triple-medalist Jack Fergus, who helped Marmion to an 11th-place team finish at the state meet at Evanston.

State competition shifts elsewhere on the north shore

later this month, with Schalz putting a premium on Kasper and standout freshman Will Kamps in terms of the Cadets’ potential success at New Trier.

“Realistically, if we’re going to score individual points, it’s going to most likely come from them,” Schalz said.

“But we hope Andrew Kasper that we can get a couple guys to swim up with them and hop on some relays and get some relays to state, too.”

Schalz likes Dan Ditusa the development of his candidates for those spots, which include a Tri-Citiesheavy influence of such athletes as senior Nick Kanute and junior Anthony Bliss.

The overall breakdown of the team: three freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors and two seniors.

“Even though we’re a really small team, probably one of the smallest out there, we still have really talented teammates,” Bliss said. “Our young swimmers, they’re going to step up and have great swims.”

Bulldogs seek consistency: youngsters and veterans alike will relish the early litmus test provided by the Metro Catholic Aquatics Conference meet.

Despite widespread conference shifts in other sports through the years, the MCAC has undergone relatively little change, meaning the Cadets can brace for challenges from Fenwick, Loyola, St. Ignatius and other traditional powers each February. The size of their ranks doesn’t matter.

“It definitely gives us an idea of who we’ll be competing with, what kind of cards that everyone will be bringing to the table,” Kasper said. “We’ll get to experience good swims, definitely, from everyone else and kind of motivate us to get more of a better swim in.”

That objective comes amid what Kasper calls “the hardest part of the season,” the weeks just before the state series taper.

As one of the team’s captains, Kasper’s message of perseverance is simple. As with Schalz’s directives, it comes across more crisply given the more intimate audience.

“We’re tired. Motivation’s definitely kind of decreasing.

The host Wheaton Warrenville South co-op boasts the highest 2014-15 team score among the rest of the field, still a few points better than the Bulldogs’ season high of 140.2.

Four regional winners automatically advance to the Glenbard North Sectional. The two next-highest team scores from the sectional complex receive at-large bids. For individuals, the five best athletes from each event and the all-around qualify for sectionals, with 12 at-large bids per category also available.

“Wheaton Warrenville South has a strong team score, but the other team scores I don’t think are as high,” Boyce said. “But they might have some good individuals, you know. Just go in and hopefully hit our routines. And if we do, the scoring’s up and down. As long as we’re consistent.”

Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Geneva, scoring a 134.8 behind fifthplace all-arounder Megan McGee (34.55).

“Our thing is, if we hit and we’re on, you know, that really [is the key]. It’s our connections and staying on,” Boyce said. “We have it; we have the base. We just have to execute.”

A senior left-hander for the Seton Hall baseball team, Ditusa is his school’s nominee for the Big East Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Lyon, a fellow St. Charles East alumnus who recently capped his career as the goalkeeper for Marquette men’s soccer, earned the distinction in 2014.

Lyon, drafted last month by the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer, received $4,000 in scholarships for his studies in biomedical sciences. Ditusa, a finance major, was a Big East academic all-star in 2012 and 2013.

Improved Fox Valley Hawks nearing 20-win mark

By STEPHEN GORDON editorial@kcchronicle.com Fox Valley Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen knew he had a pretty good team back in September.

He just didn’t know how good.

Through 26 games this season, the Hawks (18-7-1, 17-2) are poised to hit the 20-win mark. With three regular season Illinois Suburban Hockey League games left, the team could achieve that feat by winning two of its last three regular season games before the ISHL White Division playoffs begin later this month.

“If you would have told me

back in September that we would possibly get 20 win this year, I would have said you were crazy,” Gabrielsen said.

“I think it would be awesome it we could get to 20 wins. It has helped us tremendously to be able to play crossover games with the Red Division in our league. It just has given our guys so much more confidence. It will only help us going into the postseason.”

Steps toward a 20-win season were taken this past weekend when the Hawks defeated Leyden on Friday night in Franklin Park and Lane Tech, 4-3, on Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva.

“The Saturday game was

one of our best wins of the year,” Gabrielsen said. “Getting two goals over the last six minutes of the third period was just huge for us.”

The star of Saturday night’s game was sophomore forward Josh Gadow (St. Charles East) who picked up a hat trick on the night. He also had three assists in the previous game against Leyden.

Gadow put the Hawks up 1-0 at the 13:52 mark of the opening period against Lane.

However, Fox Valley surrendered two goals to fall behind 2-1 by the early part of the third period. Gadow struck again, however, with 10:25 left in regulation, knotting the

score at 2.

Lane Tech jumped back up to a 3-2 lead one minute later.

The Hawks tied the game at 3 with 6:33 remaining when forward Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North) scored off a feed from sophomore Jake Brevik (St. Charles East).

The eventual game-winner came off the stick of Gadow with 4:28 left to play for the 4-3 advantage.

Hawks junior goalie Aaron Karkos stopped 18 of the 21 shots he faced on the night for the win.

“I firmly believe we should be moved up to the Red Division beginning next season,” Gabrielsen said. “But while

it is important to grow this program, we have to do it in baby steps. We are staying in the ISHL for now. We are not ready for the Illini West Division with the Naperville schools just yet.”

While the past weekend helped Gadow (13 goals, 20 assists for the season) statistically, it was more important for the team.

“I think as long as the puck goes in the net for us, I don’t care if I get assists or goals,” Gadow said. “I think this season has surprised me if anything. We did get a lot of new players in and I was unsure

wasn’t sure what to expect after last week’s win over firstplace Geneva.

“I knew it was gonna be a tough game. They [Batavia] were tough on us the first time we played them,” Drumtra said. “We handed Geneva their first conference loss, which was such a high, and sometimes there’s a little bit of a let-down. But we weathered the storm.”

Drumtra said she was also impressed with how Claussner played, despite being sick.

“Batavia did a great job containing her,” she said. “I took her out a lot in the first half to rest her, but she’s such a competitor. She gave me everything she had.”

Claussner said she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to play because she was so sick Friday night.

“It’s my senior year, so I had to do it,” she said. “I wasn’t sure if I could play

the whole game. But coach Drumtra let me sleep until game time and she gave me enough rest.”

Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said he was mostly pleased with his team’s effort.

“We got beat on two 3-pointers,” Jensen said. “I thought we did a decent job.

I told the girls I was proud and super-pumped with how they played. We did the right things to get ready and we played a complete game.”

The Bulldogs fell to 1313 overall, 6-5 in UEC River play.

Jensen said he’s trying to stay positive, despite a disappointing loss.

“We did all the right things at all the right times.

But sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” Jensen said. “But if you keep doing it, eventually things will work out for you. We held a star player [Claussner] to her average, and that’s a win for us.”

Gentry gets career-high 33 points in win

By DEREK WOLFF editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Finding the space to run the floor in the second half, the St. Charles East boys basketball team ran Naperville North out of the building in an 82-63 drubbing Saturday afternoon in the tip-off of the DVC-UEC Challenge hosted

by Geneva.

Senior guard Cole Gentry had a banner day for the Saints (18-2), finishing with a career-high 33 points while adding four assists, three steals and three rebounds.

“A lot of it was my teammates helping me out there, setting good screens,” Gentry said. “It was a good team effort.”

Gentry’s performance lifted the Saints after a competitive first half saw East take a two point lead into the halftime break.

East got the scoring started early and was aided by

hitting 5 of 7 from beyond the 3-point arc in the first quarter, jumping out to a 2414 lead.

Gentry hit three 3-pointers in a row in the first quarter, finishing the quarter with 11 points, before going cold from downtown in the second.

The Huskies came out with renewed intensity in Cole Gentry t h e s e c o n d q u a r t e r , spurred by junior guard Jelani McClain, and opened the frame on an 8-0 run.

Gentry missed his next three attempts from 3 but added four more points as the Saints clung to the 36-34 lead heading to halftime.

“The majority of the adjustments we made at the half were made defensively – we did have 36 points that half,” Saints coach Pat Woods said. “We did talk

about a few things we needed to do better offensively as far as screen angles and what not, attacking the basket which we obviously did in the second half and that’s kind of on Cole [Genty].

The first half I thought he was a little too passive with the ball. Defensively, we made some adjustments on screens and matchups.”

The emergence of junior wing James McQuillan gave the Saints a needed, second scorer in the third quarter as East ran the lead back up to 16 at 62-46 heading to the fourth.

McQuillan converted on a trio of three-point plays and knocked down 2 of 3 from downtown to finish with 16 points.

“James is a really good player who can do a lot for us, and today I thought he finished really well,” Woods said. “I liked the way he attacked the basket and hit the outside 3 as well, so he had a

little inside-outside going.”

McQuillan was the beneficiary on several passes from Gentry, stepping up to break the game open after Naperville North trailed 4540 early in the third quarter.

“I ran the floor hard,” McQuillan said. “Cole Gentry gave me some good passes so kudos to him. I just picked my spots out there and if I was open, be confident and shoot it. My teammates do a great job of giving me confidence and finding it.”

Naperville North’s comeback bid after its strong, second quarter dissipated in the second half as Saints seemingly were the better conditioned team, leading to plenty of fast breaks and high-percentage scoring opportunities.

In other shootout action Saturday, Geneva improved to 20-2 with a 71-38 win against Glenbard North and Palatine topped South Elgin, 76-63.

The Hawks next face Mid-Valley at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

They then take on Joliet Catholic on Feb. 13 at 9:40 p.m. in Geneva and conclude the regular season against Addison Trail/Willowbrook/Fenton on Feb. 16 at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

The Hawks will begin postseason play later this month as the No. 15 seed in the Combined Division of the 2015 Blackhawk Cup State High School Hockey Tournament. Their opening round opponent will be the combined team of Lockport/ Lemont, seeded 18th. Should the Hawks, who would host the opening round matchup, advance, they would face second-seeded Waubonsie Valley at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville during the second week of March.

“It certainly is a winnable game (over Lockport/Lemont),” Gabrielsen said. “But our seeding is what it is. People outside of our league really don’t know us.”

ST. CHARLES – You’d never know St. Charles East guard Katie Claussner was suffering from a nasty case of bronchitis as her Saints took on Batavia on Saturday night.

The senior scored 17 points to lead her team to the Upstate Eight Conference River win over the Bulldogs, 59-48.

The win puts the Saints’ record at 15-7 overall and 10-2 in conference play, keeping them in second place.

“It went great, couldn’t ask for a better game,” said Claussner, who averages 18 points. “It was really difficult because every time I inhale it’s like fire going down my throat. But I’m feeling much better than if it’d been a loss.”

The Saints and Bulldogs traded leads several times during the first half, with Batavia trailing at halftime,

23-22. The Saints were down 45-43 with 3 minutes left in the game when they went on an 8-0 run, including back-toback 3-pointers.

Senior Kyra Washington hit a 3, and sophomore guard Samantha Munroe followed, as East pulled ahead, 49-45.

Munroe followed her 3-pointer with a layup to complete the run, putting the Saints up 51-45.

“I think hitting those 3s was the turning point,” Washington said. “We had a lot of momentum and were able to keep the lead. Those 3s gave us a boost.”

Washington had three 3-pointers, finishing with 14 points in the game.

Batavia junior center Hannah Frazier led all scorers with 27 points, while forward Shea Bayram had nine points for the Bulldogs.

Some serving pieces used in the 19th century are no longer needed or made. Victorian table settings were very elaborate - lace or other fancy cloths, at least six or seven special dishes for every course, like a service plate, then fish, soup, dinner, salad and butter plate, and a sauce dish. And of course there was silverware to match each course. The minimum was about eight pieces usually a fork, fish fork, salad fork, dessert fork, spoon, soup spoon, dinner spoon, knife and butter knife.

Each type of dessert also required special dishes and serving pieces. A berry bowl set for a dinner sold at Early’s Auction in Milford, Ohio, in April 2014 for $3,220. It was a Pairpoint silver plated stand with boys riding on turtles and a candlestick held by a cupid. Added to this were two crimped, pink shaded to yellow Mt. Washington Burmese glass berry bowls decorated with enameled daisies. The top of the candlestick was 49 inches high, so with a candle it was an elaborate tower that had to be noticed. Of course, the berries were served with cream from a pitcher and eaten with special berry spoons. *** Q: I bought a mahogany bachelor’s chest with four drawers and a pullout shelf at an estate sale. It was made by Biggs Furniture of Richmond, Virginia. Does it have any value as an antique?

A: Biggs made high-quality Colonial reproduction furniture. The

company was started by J.F. Biggs, who began selling antiques in Richmond in 1890. A 1912 ad claimed the antiques shop was Virginia’s largest dealer of “old mahogany furniture, old brass, cut glass, copper plate, old china, engravings, paintings, etc.” The company began making high-end reproduction furniture when the supply of antique furniture dwindled. In 1969 it became part of General Interiors Corporation, which also owned Kittinger. It was listed as a division of Kittinger in 1975. Biggs was out of business by 2010. The value of your chest is about $500. *** Q: I have a silver plated creamer with a hinged lid marked “Albert Pick Co. Inc.” The silver plate is quite worn. Is it worth anything?

A: Albert Pick, an immigrant from Austria, founded Albert Pick Company in Chicago in 1857. The company bought E.H.H. Smith Silver Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1919 and incorporated as Albert Pick & Co. Your silver-plated creamer was made after that. In the 1920s, family members established the Pick Hotel Corporation, which operated a chain of hotels until the 1960s. They used tablewares made by Albert Pick, sometimes with the hotel name on the side. Albert Pick creamers have sold recently for $14-$22. *** Q: I still have a Disney charm bracelet that was given to me in 1945 or ‘46. It’s 6 inches long and has five charms - Donald Duck, Huey, Dewey, Louie and Jose Carioca. Please help me figure out what it’s worth.

In 1946, he moved his studio to Marblehead, Massachusetts. From 1946 to 1976, Sebastian Miniatures were made in Hudson, Massachusetts, in cooperation with Lance Corporation. Lance closed in 1976. Prevent MRSA with frequent hand-washing, good hygiene Dear Doctor K: What is MRSA? What makes it so dangerous?

Dear Reader: We have a brain, and bacteria don’t. So you’d think bacteria wouldn’t be able to outsmart us. But they sure can figure out ways to become resistant to the antibiotics we use to kill them.

In the early days of antibiotics, 70 years ago, one of the most common and dangerous types of bacteria – Staphylococcus aureus – could be killed by penicillin.

However, these bacteria soon developed resistance to penicillin.

So, we invented another antibiotic, methicillin, which killed them.

So far, so good.

Then, these bacteria developed resistance to methicillin.

These bacteria are called MRSA: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. MRSA is dangerous because it cannot be treated with many standard antibiotics.

MRSA behaves much like other staph bacteria. It most often lives in the nose or on the skin without causing disease. But all staph bacteria have the potential to cause trouble. They can cause boils or other mild skin infections, as well as life-threatening lung and blood infections.

Some strains of MRSA have evolved other threatening features. For example, white blood cells from the body’s immune system normally work together

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff with an antibiotic to destroy bacteria. A hardy strain of MRSA destroys white blood cells. Other MRSA strains have developed ways to spread more easily from one person to the next.

In the community, spread of MRSA is more likely between people who: • Don’t maintain good personal hygiene; • Don’t wash their hands frequently; • Share contaminated items, such as towels or razors.

But even the cleanest person can spread MRSA. You might shake the hand of a person carrying MRSA, or you could touch an object shortly after a person with MRSA had touched it.

The best way to prevent MRSA and other infections is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. If you can’t get to a sink, use an alcohol-based hand cleanser.

Here are some more tips to help avoid picking up and spreading MRSA and other germs: • Keep cuts or scrapes clean.

Cover them with bandages and change the bandages daily. If

you develop increasing redness, swelling or pain around a cut, call your doctor.

• Don’t share personal items such as razors, towels and sheets.

• Wash workout clothes and athletic team uniforms after each use.

• Shower after you work out.

• Wash sheets and towels in hot water. Dry them in a hot dryer.

Unfortunately, over the past 50 years, MRSA has become pretty common in health facilities.

That’s why it’s really important, when visiting a person in a hospital or nursing home, to thoroughly wash your hands before and after your visit. Follow any instructions posted outside the room, such as wearing protective gloves or a full gown.

Even more unfortunately, MRSA increasingly is found throughout the community, not just in health care institutions.

Certain antibiotics that typically have to be given intravenously (rather than as pills) can kill MRSA. Doctors hope that we will be able to keep one step ahead of MRSA through medical research.

Teen has birthmark on neck, face Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and was born with a deep purple “strawberry” birthmark on my neck and a small section of my left cheek. I’ve always been very self-conscious about this, and it has really affected my social growth. I would really like to have it removed by laser surgery this summer so that I could start being the “new me” before I start college in September.

My parents and grandparents kept telling me I’d get used to my birthmark, but I’ve had it for 17 years and I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it. In today’s deal, how should South play in four spades after West leads a trump, East takes the trick with his ace and returns his trump jack, West following suit?

South starts with five potential losers in his hand: one spade, two hearts and two diamonds. He begins with only eight winners: five spades, one heart and two clubs.

Declarer can ruff his third heart in the dummy, but how will he find a 10th trick?

If the heart finesse is losing, West had better also hold the diamond ace, which is unlikely. If the heart finesse is winning, how does declarer get to the dummy to take it? (To cross in spades kills the later heart ruff.) At first, it looks as though West needs to have the diamond ace, but there is another chance.

At trick one, South must play a high spade under East’s ace.

Then, after winning the second trick, he unblocks (cashes) his two club winners before running the diamond jack (or, if West produces the queen, covers with dummy’s king). Here, East is stymied. If he returns a heart, declarer takes the finesse. If East continues diamonds, dummy’s king becomes a trick. Or if East leads his last club, South ruffs high, overtakes his carefully conserved spade two with dummy’s six and cashes the club winners. Then he takes the heart finesse to collect an overtrick.

Finally, shed a crocodile tear for East. With 18 points, he never thought that his opponents had missed a game. So, instead of passing out one spade, he made the automatic takeout double.
