visited with some dogs and cats at the Kane County Animal Control facility this week in Geneva.

When I entered the cat room, there were about three cats in a small “play park” area made of plastic toys, and one large black

cat lounging on top of the gated pen area.

As I walked through the room, the black cat slinked across the

gates as if on a tight rope and then leapt to the floor, landing on its feet.

Judge will decide St. Charles names economic development division manager on eligibility of Mooseheart player

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Judge David Akemann is expected to decide today whether Mooseheart boys basketball player Rodrigue Ceda Makindu should be able to play in today’s regional final against Newark.

Aurora attorney Judd Lofchie on Wednesday filed a complaint against the Illinois High School Association for not allowing Makindu, who is from Congo, to play basketball.

The case was in court Thursday.

“This case is about fairness,” Lofchie told Akemann on Thursday during a court hearing. “It’s about letting him be able to play sports.”

In his complaint, Lofchie alleged that the IHSA has illegally stopped Makindu from playing basketball and all sports by implementing a bylaw revision to the eligibility rules of the IHSA. Makindu came to Mooseheart through the help of Jim Schmidt, the athletic director at Plano School District.

“He is just trying to help a kid from a war-torn country,” Lofchie said. “Makindu just wants to be here and get an education and play sports like a normal kid.”

The case is similar to one from December 2012, when Akemann granted a restraining order that allowed three

Mooseheart boys basketball players from South Sudan to continue competing until the Illinois High School Association’s board of directors considered the matter.

The board eventually ruled that the three basketball players would remain eligible, but the program was placed on probation.

Those students – Mangisto Deng, Akim Nyang and Makur Puou – are all key components of this year’s team as seniors.

The IHSA in January approved a bylaw stating that international students attending school in Illinois who are not participating in an approved student exchange program “will not be eligible with respect to residence or transfer for the duration of their high school attendance unless they meet the requirements of the applicable provisions of the residency and transfer bylaws, as determined in an official ruling from the executive director.”

Lofchie said that if the amendment was not passed, Makindu would be allowed to play sports because he resides at Mooseheart fulltime.

IHSA attorney Dave Bressler argued to Akemann that the IHSA is trying to keep the playing field level for all high school athletes.

“There would be significant harm to the public if you said the process was invalid,” Bressler said.

ST. CHARLES – City planner Matt O’Rourke soon will take on a new set of responsibilities.

Monday is his first official day as St. Charles’ economic development division manager in the Community and Economic Development Department, he said.

O’Rourke said Thursday he is eager to get started.

“I believe in this city,” he said, indicating that was one of the reasons he applied for the job. “I believe in what we’re doing.”

In his new position, O’Rourke said he plans to make sure the city is collaborating with property owners to entice new businesses and retailers into town.

“And keep existing ones here, too,” he added.

He expects he also will

work with the Charlestowne Mall owners to help market the city to potential tenants and to assist them as much as they want, he said.

As for targeting specific businesses that residents have expressed an interest in, O’Rourke said there is only so much he can do.

“We’ll pick up the phone and talk to businesses,” Matt he said. “If a O’Rourke business out there wants to come to town, and my call helps do that, great.”

O’Rourke will be under the direction of Community and Economic Development Director Rita Tungare, who in a written statement said the city conducted a thorough and comprehensive search of candidates.

“I’m confident Matt will continue the city’s efforts in working collaboratively with local organizations and the business community to enhance the economic vitality of the city and promote St. Charles as a desirable location for businesses and industries,” she said.

During his six years with the city, O’Rourke has served as staff liaison to several commissions, managed numerous development projects and worked on the CMAP multijurisdictional housing study.

Before St. Charles, O’Rourke worked at the village of Romeoville for four years. He has a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Ball State University and a bachelor’s degree in urban planning from the University of Cincinnati.

He lives in St. Charles.

Kane County Audubon plans scope, bird walk BATAVIA – The Kane County Audubon has planned a scope day and bird walk event at 8 a.m. April 5 at the Nelson Lake/ Dick Young Forest Preserve, 39W115 Main St., Batavia.

Participants should meet in the parking lot by the silo on Nelson Lake Road, south of Main Street and west of Randall Road.

Spotting scopes will be set up for close look at waterfowl on the lake.

An optional walk around the lake follows.

Geneva • Thomas G. Nelson, 27, of the 200 block of Richards Street, Geneva, was charged Sunday, Feb. 23, with driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent and leaving the scene of an accident. Nelson and Timothy G. Modjeski, 27, of the same address, also were charged with two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia – four glass smok-

ing pipes and a metal marijuana grinder with a red Chicago Bulls logo on it – and possession of 13.2 grams of marijuana.

• Paul A. Zabilka, 36, of the 200 block of North First Street, Geneva, was charged Friday, Feb. 21, with driving under the influence and speeding.

• A catalytic converter valued at $480 was reported stolen Saturday, Feb. 22, from a 1996 Toyota 4Runner parked at the train depot parking lot, 328 Crescent Place.

Kane County Sheriff’s Office • A residential burglary was reported Monday, Feb. 24, in the 3N700 block of Hawthorn Drive, St. Charles Township. A side door was reportedly open, and a basement window was kicked in. A dresser drawer and other doors were open, and a vehicle was rummaged through, police reported. Damage to the window and a door was estimated at $750.

CASA Kane County will have special recruitment meetings that are targeted to men interested in volunteering.

but the organization said more than half of its caseload involves boys and young men in need of strong role models.

Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout had always been a goal for Geneva High School senior Douglas Johnson.

He only wishes he earned the honor sooner.

His grandfather, Bill Johnson, was an Eagle Scout and local Scouting legend who, among other accomplishments, started Troop 25 in 1958 with St. Charles Episcopal Church as the sponsoring organization and led the troop for 30 years as Scoutmaster.

The Three Fires Council even named an award after him.

“It was such a big part of his life,” said Douglas, his only grandson.

After graduating from Cub Scouts, Douglas said he followed in his father’s and uncles’ footsteps by joining his grandfather’s troop. He said the family connection had “a big influence” in his decision, though he also liked Troop 25 because of its small

size.

Douglas, 18, said his grandfather remained active in the troop.

“He made it to every meeting up until he passed,” he said.

Bill Johnson died in October 2011 at age 87.

Douglas said he had hoped to become an Eagle Scout before his grandfather’s death.

“That is something I regret,” Douglas said. He added that becoming an Eagle Scout “was his dying wish to me.”

For his Eagle project, Douglas made four raisedbed gardens for St. Charles Episcopal Church.

He left two gardens open for the church’s flower guild and planted produce in the others with the idea the church could use the food for its monthly spaghetti dinner, he said.

He finished the project last year and had his Eagle Scout ceremony this month, he said, noting his grandmother, Elizabeth Johnson, attended.

“I got a big hug from her,” Douglas said.

BATAVIA – From 7 to 9 p.m. today, Chris Burisek, owner of Pure Prairie Organics, will discuss the differences between hydroponics and aquaponics at Unity of Fox Valley, 230 Webster St., Batavia.

GENEVA – The Geneva Library board Thursday agreed to seek requests for proposals to survey the community on what it wants in a library.

Acting director Marilyn Boria recommended that the board use a company that will provide a statistically valid measure of the current building at 127 James St. in terms of what it can and cannot do.

The survey would cover various aspects, including the building’s good points and limitations, services, collections and the building itself, officials said.

“These are all the possible components you could put in a [request for proposals] and divide it into two or three surveys,” Boria said. “This would be a statistically valid surveys of what people want, what are they satisfied with and what they are not satisfied with.”

“Ultimately we want ... to understand what our current situation is, in terms of what the community wants and what we are able to provide here,” trustee Susan Shivers said. “And find what is the desired performance and where is the gap and how do we close it.”

The board also agreed to meet twice a month, at the second Thursday, as well as the fourth Thursday in April and May. Boria recommended the second meeting to give board members enough time to work on hiring a new director.

GENEVA – The Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District on Thursday honored Campton Township naturalist Jack Shouba for his longtime conservation efforts.

Shouba received the Dick Young Award during the organization’s annual meeting and awards presentation at Riverside Receptions in Geneva.

“This is very meaningful to me,” Shouba said.

The award honors Young’s lifetime commitment to the conservation and protection of natural resources in Kane and DuPage counties. Rather than recognizing individuals for a single project or shortterm series of related efforts, the award honors conservationists’ day-to-day efforts over the course of their careers.

Now retired, Shouba, 73, taught biology and chemistry at Lyons Township High School. His résumé also includes teaching such classes

as botany and photography at Morton Arboretum and serving as the open space development coordinator for Campton Township.

He said a class he took at the Chicago Academy of Sciences in the late 1960s piqued his interest about the region’s natural history.

After learning about prairies, he said he helped found the Save the Prairie Society, whose first Jack Shouba project was the Wolf Road Prairie in Westchester. The project took about 20 years – much longer than anticipated, he said.

Shouba now lives in Campton Hills and helped Campton Township pass two referendums to buy open space, he said.

“I just love the open space,” he said.

He said he enjoys his work with Campton Township.

“Most of it’s fun,” Shouba said. “It’s fun to get out there.”

Kaneland students talk about computer-based program at conference

ST. CHARLES – Andrea Petrarca stood near a poster board Thursday at a table in a crowded conference room at Pheasant Run Resort and Conference Center, and explained how important computers have become to her school days.

Kaneland students were there with their teacher, Beth Trafton, as part of an exhibit at the Illinois Computing Educators Conference, which drew thousands from the education community to various events and exhibits throughout the day.

Petrarca, a senior at Kaneland High School, flipped through a book and showed examples of how tools such as comic strips, Google Docs and flash cards have helped enhance the learning experience in special-education classes at the school.

Petrarca said that has made a huge difference.

“My disability is writing,” Petrarca said, adding that it “is hard for me to write a full essay.”

Instead, she said, the computer-based tools allow her to learn in other ways.

Petrarca and two fellow students, Alexander Ochoa and Arturo Silva, were at the station with Trafton.

The students said they have enjoyed the ability to use the computer tools, especially Google Docs, which will allow Trafton to look over students’ work as they write it.

Also, the students described a comic strip they created based on “The Canterbury Tales,” in which each student would create a character.

GENEVA – The Geneva Women’s Club, formerly Mothers Club of Geneva, will offer tuition aid once again to Geneva school district residents who will pursue higher education.

For the academic year 2014-15, the organization will be awarding multiple scholarships totaling $7,500. Qualifying applicants will be evaluated on the basis of financial need, community service and academic achievement.

Applicants must reside in the Geneva school district, be a current high school senior during the 2013-14 academic year, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better, be able to show proof of community service hours and enroll at an accredited two- or four-year college or university or a vocational-technical school.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com An Aurora attorney is running against a judge for the Republican nomination for the “New Judgeship A” seat in the 3rd Subcircuit of the 16th Judicial Circuit.

Kane County Circuit Court Judge James Hallock, 62, is running against Aurora attorney David Howard, 49, for James the seat in the Hallock March 18 primary. Hallock was appointed as a new circuit felony judge in 2012, replacing retiring Judge Timothy O. David Sheldon.

Howard Hallock has served as a judge in the county since 1992, when he was appointed as an associate judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit.

“With my 22 years experience, that certainly gives me the edge over someone who’s never had the experience,” Hallock said.

One of Hallock’s goals is for the automation and computerization of court records.

“If things are automated and computerized, first off, there’s a big benefit for storage,” he said. “And then everyone can read the court orders. It’s one of the things that I would like to focus on. Certainly, automation is going to be the future. We’re not going backwards to carbon paper.”

The Kane County Bar Association’s judicial evaluation committee gave Hallock a highly recommended rat-

ing while not recommending Howard.

Howard, a sixth-generation Republican, said that he has 23 years of experience practicing law.

“The reason why I decided to run was that judges are some of the most visible members to the public of government,” he said. “The judge has an important role. The judge’s role is to make sure that people are treated like citizens as opposed to subjects.”

Howard said if people have a bad experience, such as in traffic court, “it’s going to color your perception of the government.” While campaigning, Howard said he has found people to be “seemingly disillusioned with the government.”

“It comes down to people believing in the rule of the law and the system,” he said. “It’s something that a lot of countries don’t have.”

Committee reviews plan for Davis Richmond

The Learning and Teaching Committee recommended adoption of an updated Corrective Action Plan for the school.

The plan includes suggestions to add some partial staffing and also foster better communication with parents.

call for the majority of Davis Richmond students to meet or exceed state standards in English language arts and math on the 2016 state assessment.

The other goal is for the school, families and staff to have an 80 percent satisfaction rate with the learning community, to be measured by a 2016 survey.

The plan was developed using feedback from three forums held with Davis Richmond parents and teachers.

Although the school board members at Thursday’s committee agreed with the plan, they received some negative

feedback from parents about the forums.

Some parents said the small group forum discussions were stifled because district administrators were hovering around the groups, board member Ed McNally said. Parents also felt like there wasn’t enough time to give input during the forums, each of which lasted more than two hours.

School officials noted that parents had an option to send their feedback through email if they had more to share.

The full school board will vote to adopt the plan March 10.

ood is a necessity for survival. But for the millions of Americans who suffer from eating disorders, it’s an obsession, an instrument of addiction and a mode of control.

Eating disorders have been quietly plaguing the population for years with the incidence of anorexia in women between the ages of 15 and 19 on the rise every decade since the 1930s, according to the National Eating Disorders Association.

••• In an effort to bring public attention to the critical needs of those with eating disorders, the National Eating Disorders Association launched its 27th annual National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, running from Feb. 23 through Saturday.

The campaign – themed “I Had No Idea” – aims to correct the common misconceptions that surround eating disorders while highlighting the sometimes life-threatening severity of the illness.

NEDA defines anorexia nervosa – which has the highest fatality rate of any mental illness – as being characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss; and bulimia nervosa as being characterized by a cycle of binging and self-induced vomiting that compensates for the effects of binge eating. “[Food is] not like a lot of addictions where you can give it up like cigarettes or alcohol,” said Aurora resident Jen Buhot, 36, a recovered anorexic and child therapist. “You can’t give up food. So, it is something you have to

learn to live with, and you can’t just abstain from it, which I think makes it that much harder.”

Katherine Walker, a therapist who specializes in clients with eating disorders at Cadence Behavioral Health in St. Charles, said that similar to an addict, a “recovered” anorexic’s or bulimic’s relationship with food will be a daily struggle for the remainder of that person’s life. “[They’re] always going to have that battle, similar to an alcoholic,” Walker said.

How an individual develops an eating disorder cannot be pinned down to a single soluble entity, because it is largely a multi-faceted, “bio-psycho-social” illness, according to NEDA. The desire for physical perfection brought on by the media’s idealized standard of beauty, “thin-is-in” propaganda and the abuse of Photoshop in advertising campaigns play a role in the development of an eating disorder, but it’s not the whole picture, Walker said.

was a staggering difference in her weight from when she left home in August.

“It was enough for him to be like, ‘I’m pulling you out of school,’ ” she said, adding that if her father had not interfered, the problem would have gotten progressively worse.

Buhot and her family sought treatment and received counseling for anorexia.

“It took them a lot of family therapy to understand that I wasn’t just choosing to do this,” Buhot said of the recovery experience.

“To this day, if I lose a few pounds, my family goes into panic mode, because it takes them back to that time.”

Buhot’s own experience with an eating disorder inspired her to pursue a career in child therapy as a counselor so that she could help others with their own struggles. “Dealing with an eating disorder or any type of addiction can give you a lot of clarity into what other people might be going through,” she said.

Some of the young children she counsels already have body-image and perceived weight issues, she said, which she blames, partially, on images projected by media.

“Our culture as a whole defines beauty and success, and I don’t think we can escape it,” Buhot said.

When modeling for Playboy and as a producer, Branson got to work behind the scenes at photo shoots, often witnessing the photo-manipulation process first hand.

“They didn’t do what they do now. They make a new person out of these photos,” she said. “And the problem is that people who are not behind the camera, they don’t know how this production works; they think that it’s real.”

Walker said that young people are the ones most affected by the media. “[Eating disorders are] creeping down into middle school, which is really concerning for me,” she said.

In addition to younger women being diagnosed with eating disorders, Walker is starting to see more men coming forward, as well as women who are pregnant.

“They’re really trying to manage and control their weight ... even while they’re carrying their baby to term,” Walker said.

Help is not only an option for those struggling with eating disorders, but is imperative to combating the disease. Often, the most difficult part of seeking help is being “honest with yourself and realizing that you have a problem,” Branson said.

The causes of eating disorders can be placed into “four different camps,” Walker said, which include psychological factors, such as depression, stress and low self-esteem; interpersonal struggles, such as relationship issues or if there is a history of abuse, being bullied or teased; social factors, such as the media and cultural pressures that glorify “thinness;” and, potentially, biological factors – which are still being researched – like genetics.

“The problem is, so often, when we’re dealing with eating disorders, we’re also dealing with other mental health issues. …” said Walker, adding that issues could include depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse or other mood disorders. “A lot of times, the depression is what gets reported and not the eating disorder.

Very rarely is an eating disorder a standalone problem.”

Former model Kerri Branson, 43, of North Aurora began her own battle with bulimia and anorexia – not as a way to keep up with beauty-industry standards – but, rather, as a means of coping with a stressful home life and depression as a teen, she said.

Branson went through phases of anorexia and bulimia from ages 14 to 19. “[Anorexia and bulimia] are more about the inner struggle of feeling like you have control more than what people think about how you look,” Branson said, adding that she would sometimes go days without eating. “I’d give myself one thing that I could eat. … And then you get hungry and you go on your binges, and you eat a lot; then you feel guilty after you eat it, so you throw it up.

And then you think, ‘I don’t want to throw up anymore,’ so I’m just not going to eat. That was my only way of feeling like I had some sort of control – the control over my body.”

Because of her eating disorder, Branson said she didn’t begin menstruating until she was 19, which, Walker said, is a significant sign in understanding the severity of the illness.

Ironically, it was Branson’s modeling career that forced her to finally get healthy, she said.

“When I got into modeling I actually did a turnaround,” she said, adding that as a swimwear and lingerie model, she needed to look healthier and curvier. “Instead of being obsessed with being skinny, I am obsessed about being healthy.”

Though Branson is now a doting mother of four, she said she experienced infertility problems. The problems were caused because of hereditary issues that were exacerbated by having had an eating disorder earlier in life, she said. To get pregnant, she had to have surgery, but once she gave birth to her twin boys, she said “everything kicked into gear,” and her third and fourth children were born naturally after that.

Buhot – a child therapist and member of the Naperville-based National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders – said her three-year battle with anorexia began as a diet, and gradually morphed into a yearning for physical perfection.

“The pressure was all internal ... I was competing against myself. Every day I wanted to be better than the day before,” she said.

Buhot started dieting in college – at age 18 – in preparation for a spring break trip to Panama City Beach, Fla. “It was a way to get control, and once it started, I felt like it was something I was good at, and it kind of became my identity,” she said.

11th Congressional District: Senger

The Republican primary for the 11th Congressional District is a four-person race between longtime businessman Bert Miller, conservative talk show host Ian Bayne, state Rep. Darlene Senger and Grundy County Board Member Chris Balkema. The winner will oppose Democratic incumbent Bill Foster in November.

We endorse Senger in the

March 18 primary. Senger, who has an accounting background and served on the Naperville City Council, has a strong grasp of fiscal issues that will come in handy at the federal level. Her time in Springfield provided a primer in learning how to govern in a divided political environment.

Like the rest of the field, Senger is adamant that excessive government regulation must

be addressed to create greater economic prosperity and is highly critical of the Affordable Care Act. Among the other candidates, Balkema is an articulate advocate for conservative principles and has an extensive private sector background with Caterpillar. He contends that crafting smaller bills with “laser focus” would be the most effective way to

counteract the gridlock in Washington.

Miller, who – like Balkema – does not reside in the district, is former chairman of the Illinois Manufacturers Association and was a longtime executive at Phoenix Closures, a bottle cap and lid manufacturer in Naperville.

14th Congressional District: Hosta In Illinois’ 14th Congressional District, two Democrats are running in the March 18 primary for a chance to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren in November.

Dennis Anderson of Gurnee, who is retired after working most recently for the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center at the University of Loyola-Chicago as the assistant director for research support, is making his second run for the post after losing to Hultgren in 2012.

Suddenly, it dawned on me. Create a list of 365 dinner ideas and deliver it on her birthday!

After racing through favorites, I counted up how many I had – five: meatloaf, breakfast for dinner, chicken salad, turkey and cheeseburger meatloaf. I persevered. A week later, I’d added cheeseburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, tacos and roast beef. A wopping 354 to go.

I downsized; 91 meals (repeated four times a year) would do. A week later, I caved and took to the Internet.

Finally finished, ecstatic, I emailed the list to my daughter, Molly, who prepares meals with vegan marathoners in mind. It returned with every second or third suggestion replaced with plates such as “asparagus and prosciutto grilled cheese with soy.”

To rebalance the list, I sent it to Jay. He found “Duck Dynasty” goodies like “Fabulous Frog Legs.”

I couldn’t wait for Tia’s birthday.

On Valentine’s Day, when opening it, she laughed, but at me or with me

wasn’t clear. “Good thing I got it for Valentine’s Day,” she said. “If you’d given it to me for my birthday, I might have hit you with it.”

Although that didn’t make immediate sense to me, it resonated on a visceral level.

Next day, Tia said, “I have the list, but which dinner do you have a taste for tonight?”

Jay and I guffawed in disbelief.

“Doesn’t matter!” he said.

“Everything’s equal,” I agreed.

“Except for Molly’s choices.”

“Meatloaf,” Jay offered.

“It’s the default,” I confirmed.

Indeed, we had meatloaf. Only trouble is, now we have to wait 90 days till it comes around again.

Geneva bounces Batavia, moves on to supersectional

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Geneva senior guard Michaela Loebel climbed to the top of the ladder positioned under the far basket in Addison Trail’s gym Thursday night.

Braced knee and all, she stood near the top for some posterity poses as the rest of her girls basketball teammates hollered.

The Vikings were moments removed from easing past Batavia, 48-24, for the Class 4A Addison Trail Sectional final, and here was arguably their biggest concern finally surfacing.

“Really wobbly,” Loebel said. “That’s where I was like, ‘Whoa.’ ” Geneva (26-5) cut down the nets shortly after accepting their plaque for downing the Bulldogs (21-10), who swept the season series. Both teams shared the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title, and, for a time, jaws dropped in amazement.

“I guess it is a huge surprise factor, because they have amazing players,” Vikings senior point guard Sidney Santos said. “But we worked our butts off. We came in, we believed in each other and that proved it out on the court. So that’s all I can say.”

Winners of 13 straight, Geneva is bound for Monday’s Judson Supersectional against Rockford Boylan (27-4) thanks in large part to its defense against Bulldogs senior point guard Liza Fruendt, the UEC River Player of the Year.

After striking for a school-record 51 points in the team’s game in Geneva last month, Fruendt was limited to 10 Thursday.

Loebel, a Nebraska soccer recruit accustomed to conditioning, shadowed Fruendt for much of the first half. Sidelined for much of the past two seasons with knee injuries and only recently returned to

the rotation, she shared defensive duties with Taylor Williams and Bella Medina.

Her physical therapist – “ATI, man,” Loebel said – and the growing, teamwide vibe were at the top of Loebel’s list of people or things to thank.

“Oh yeah. Our whole team, adrenaline,” she said. “Everyone on the bench and just the fans, we run on that. The cheering. The atmosphere. So everyone’s great.”

Geneva capitalized on the size of its frontcourt – including Grace Loberg (6-foot-2), Abby Novak (6-0) and Janie McCloughan (5-10) – even as both teams struggled from the field. Geneav shot 15 for 51.

Batavia was 8 for 31.

“I think there has to be a perfect storm of things that a team has and can do to shut down Liza and take away our post players,” Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen said. “And they have.”

Geneva led, 16-11, at halftime and 32-17 after three quarters. While Batavia finished 0 for 10 from 3-point range, Vikings defenders further frustrated the Bulldogs by sealing up driving lanes.

The Vikings alternated man-to-man and zone defenses depending on possessions.

They even used lots of the

boys team’s 1-3 chase, which coaches helped players learn during Wednesday’s practice.

“The plan was to faceguard [Fruendt] and not let her get the ball, and we all had to help over on everyone else and make the rest of the team prove that they could beat us,” Santos said.

Loberg, a freshman called up after Loebel’s injury, had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

McCloughan (12) and Morgan Seberger (11) also finished in double figures. Seberger hit two 3s after halftime to help

Only four Bulldogs scored.

Hannah Frazier (eight points) followed Fruendt, who scored five points in a Thanksgiving tournament game earlier this season, Jensen said.

Admitting he didn’t have a full scope of the program’s record books, Jensen offered the season as one of Batavia’s best. The Bulldogs accomplished a number of team goals – including 20 wins and the program’s first regional title since 1990.

“I don’t want to disrespect any other team that’s come through Batavia,” Jensen said.

“But I, quite frankly, told the girls that at this point, what we’ve done, we’re at least in the conversation of the best team that Batavia’s had.”

Five seasons ago, Geneva lost just twice and finished fourth in 4A. Several marquee players contended with injuries in the interim, but now the Vikings are just one win away from a return to state.

“Without a doubt,” Santos said. “We’ve had the Geneva curse since I was a freshman, and we deserve this. We worked so hard to get here.”

While the Rockets never delivered a prototypical knockout blow, they built an eight-point halftime lead and kept the Crusaders (1911) from mounting a serious threat behind their typically stout defense.

Rockets forward Alison Colby scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds before fouling out with her team ahead, 47-38, with 3:14 to play in the fourth quarter.

“I think she was offended that they wouldn’t guard her, so what are you going to do?” Smith said. “If you’re a basketball player, you’ve got

to take the ball to the hole and score on that kid. They never adjusted.”

Central’s mission at halftime was obvious – slow down Rockford Lutheran guard Ashley Kerestes, who scored 17 of her team’s 21 first-half points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor.

Still, Central led 29-21 at the break after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Holt.

“I think she’s a freshman so it was like a pride thing for us,” Holt said. “She just had the half of her life, so we’re not going to let that continue, and we didn’t.”

Kerestes finished with a game-high 20 points. Crusaders post player Abby Woolacott – who stands 6-foot-2 – had only two points at halftime before finishing with 10

points and 11 rebounds.

“I was, frankly, surprised they didn’t go in to [Woolacott] more,” Smith said.

“I mean the article I read in the paper said we run our offense through [Woolacott], and I don’t know how many touches or baskets she had.”

Rockford Lutheran drew within six points three times in the third quarter but came no closer. Central led, 41-34, entering the fourth.

Rockets forward Samantha Pryor contributed 10 points and six rebounds, including making all six of her free throws in the fourth quarter.

With almost all of its firepower returning from last year’s upstart, underclassman-driven squad returning, Central entered the season fully expecting to play into March.

Those high standards made for a potentially pressure-packed night Thursday, but Central handled it with aplomb.

“It would have been very disappointing [not to win the sectional],” Colby said.

“We had that thought going into the game, and we knew we had to get the win, and now we can’t wait to keep on going and win the supersectional.”

The sophomore’s 3-point shooting in the middle quarters helped the Rockets gradually separate themselves from Rockford Lutheran in Thursday’s 55-41 Central triumph at the IHSA Class 3A Belvidere Sectional championship game.

“I can hit a 3 but I can’t hit a layup,” said Holt, who made four 3-pointers on the night and scored a team-high 18 points. “It’s the joke on the team, but it’ll come.”

Cadets’ beefed up depth helpful in duals state series QUICK READ Kevin Druley Marmion’s first individual state wrestling place-winner competed at 145 pounds.

Its past five state champions weighed no more than 138.

There’s no denying the impact the little guys have made on the program’s ascent to the state’s best. The Cadets might just become elite, however, thanks to the second half of their lineup.

Aiming to improve on last season’s runner-up finish in the Class 3A team duals state tournament, Marmion enters Saturday’s quarterfinal against Plainfield Central with six placers from last weekend’s individual state tourney.

All but four-time champ Johnny Jimenez (126), a Wisconsin-bound senior from St. Charles, are 152 or heavier.

Jimenez’s older brother, Nico, was Marmion’s first state champ, at 171.

The Cadets laud a challenging schedule for their success, often channeling experiences from matches from national or regional tournaments once the state series rolls around.

They are not forgetful of their roots, however, knowing their backgrounds also are a pivotal reason behind a return trip to Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

“Just from getting trained at a younger age,” said Nick Ferraro, a senior from Elburn who was fifth at 170. “Just from growing up around wrestling.”

Many Cadets are cut from the same developmental cloth: “The Barn” at SCN Youth Wrestling in Campton Hills.

“Josh Meyers, he has to eat every day to get to 170,” Jimenez said.

Other placers flanking Ferraro and Meyers include Trace Carello (152), Nathan Traxler (182) and Lucas Warren (220).

Warren missed most of the season after battling injured discs in his lower back, but returned in time for the state series.

“One hundred percent for sure,” he said. “They’re good now. I’ve been going to therapy. Feel good.”

and assistant Donny Reynolds eventually prompted heavyweight Oscar Garza’s return to the mat room in time for regionals.

Garza wrestled as a freshman and sophomore but elected not to compete as a junior. The senior went 2-2 at regionals and finished fourth, narrowly missing a sectional berth.

He has returned to wrestling shape and adds another

big piece to Marmion’s quest for a team title.

Speaking of bulk: Cubs first base prospect Dan Vogelbach impressed officials and teammates by shedding 30 pounds in the offseason.

Club brass hopes another farmhand that joined the Class-A Cougars shortly after Vogelbach’s August 2013 promotion added some bulk that “Vogie” gave up.

Trevor Gretzky enters the 2014 season with just seven extra-base hits in 250 minor-league at-bats, which aren’t ideal power numbers for a 6-foot-4 corner outfielder. Even one who played at 190 pounds last season.

“Without a doubt during the offseason and throughout last season it was just trying to get him stronger, continue his progression not only as a baseball player but keeping him athletic,” Cubs assistant director of player development and international scouting Alex Suarez said this month.

“Because with his size, naturally, he’s going to get bigger and stronger. But if he maintains the athleticism and gets stronger, then you’ve got a pretty interesting guy.”

A .288 hitter (72 for 250) since joining the Cubs organization as a seventh-round pick in 2011, Gretzky smacked the lone home run of his minor league career Sept. 1 against Peoria. His father, NHL icon Wayne Gretzky, was among those in the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark stands.

Jose Quintana’s reaction: Priceless.

When Quintana got word of the deal before a Cactus League game past March, the White Sox lefthander clasped his hands together, looked up to the sky with a smile and said, “Oh please, God. Please.’’

Quintana, 25, was dreaming that one day he’d be blessed with the same good fortune. At the time, he was largely unproven with one major league season under his belt, albeit a proficient one with a 3.76 ERA over 136 innings. When he followed that in 2013 with 200 innings and a 3.51 ERA (fifth among American League lefties), answered prayers for his own big deal began to look like a real possibility.

“I was happy for Chris when he got that contract,’’ Quintana said. “He is a good teammate, he pitches hard in every start and the team has a chance to win every time he pitches.’’

A tough luck pitcher who set an AL record with 17 no-decisions last season (he was 9-7), Quintana’s top goal is to comfortably surpass 200 innings.

He will make $500,000 this season and is likely to receive Super 2 arbitration status before next season. At age 23, Sale got his extension a year before his first arbitration year, and general manager Rick Hahn will likely look to lock up Quintana long-term even though the Sox have five years of control.

“We did it with Chris last year when he was coming off his All-Star appearance and top six in Cy Young voting,’’ Hahn said. “We’re not afraid to lock in young guys with

a deal that makes sense for both sides.’’

Quintana said such discussions haven’t taken place.

“Right now, we don’t talk about contracts,’’ he said. “I don’t think about that, just preparation for the new season.

“I want to help my teammates win, and I want to stay here for a long time.’’

There seems to be a good chance of that for the Sox’ poised and well-liked 25-year old No. 2 starter from Colombia.

“He’s the man,’’ said Sale, a two-time All-Star. “To be honest, he was the most consistent starter we had last year. He had no blowup games, he pitched 200 innings and he made three more starts [33] than I did [30].’’

Sale remembers when Quintana, a Sox scouting and

development success story who was unprotected on the Yankees 40-man roster after the 2011 season and signed as a minor-league free agent by the Sox, pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief in Cleveland in May 2012. He was immediately sent him back down before returning two weeks later.

“He was so appreciative of that moment, you knew we were going to see this guy again and that he was going to be here for a while,’’ Sale said.

Quintana did return, and it was a game June 29 at Yankee Stadium in which he had a rare bad “blowup” inning – four runs in the first – that really sold pitching coach Don Cooper. Quintana gathered himself, toughed out six innings and got the decision in a 14-7 victory.

“I remember saying after

the game, ‘Now I like him,’ ” Cooper said.

“He showed no quit, showed no hesitancy and continued to battle. And battle.’’

Quintana’s fastball tops out around 90-91 mph, but a smooth, repeatable delivery helps him “throw all of his pitches for strikes at a good percentage,’’ Cooper said.

And he’s a quick study.

“You tell him something once and he doesn’t forget it,’’ Cooper said. “He wants to be on top of it all. You like a guy like that because he’s into it as much as you are.’’

“Without offending anybody, I think it’s amazing that another team would let him go with the fluidity in his motion, the arm that he has,’’ Sale said. “He throws his first bullpen of the spring and he almost looks like he’s ready for Opening Day.’’

By PATRICK FINLEY Chicago Sun-Times After setting a franchise yardage record and finishing second in the NFL in points last year, the Bears are getting the band back together.

Center Roberto Garza signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract Thursday, meaning every offensive starter is set to return for coach Marc Trestman’s second season.

Garza will play his 10th year with the Bears at age 35, but wouldn’t rule out playing beyond the end of the deal.

“They knew I wanted to come back and they wanted me back,” Garza told the SunTimes. “I’m at the point in my career that I was able to make a decision to stay in Chicago. ...

“It would have been hard to go somewhere new and start over. I don’t want to go anywhere else. I want to retire a Chicago Bear.”

Negotiations started a few days ago. Lions center Dominic Raiola, 35, “absolutely” helped to set the market, Garza said, when he signed a similar deal earlier this month.

“It feels good,” Garza said.

“I’m fortunate I haven’t had to deal with much negotiation throughout my year. ...

“The waiting process was not good for me.

“I’m not a very patient man.”

Pro Football Focus rated Garza, who hasn’t missed a regular-season game since

2010, its 12th-best center last season. The unquestioned leader of the offensive line helped tutor new guards Matt Slauson and Kyle Long; the former earned a four-year contract in January, and the latter went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie.

“We all helped each other,” Garza said. “That’s what was great about the guys we have.”

Pleased with their offensive direction, the Bears have re-signed three starters – quarterback Jay Cutler, Slauson and Garza – since the end of the season.

The Bears kept tight end Dante Rosario on a one-year deal Thursday, too, leaving backup quarterback Josh McCown and swing tackle (and, last year, blocking tight end) Eben Britton as the only offensive players of consequence left on their free agents-to-be list.

Free agency starts March 11.

Garza can see himself transitioning to television – he called his Spanish broadcast of the Super Bowl “a great learning experience” – whenever he retires.

“This is the best I’ve felt in a couple years,” he said. “I realize I’m going to be 35, and at some point my body’s going to say, ‘No more.’ ” Until that day comes, he’ll keep playing.

“If I feel good this time next year,” he said, “I will.”

Sometimes at church when presented with an unfamiliar hymn, while struggling to catch on, one wonders: Who picked this? Let’s sing something we know!

When I spoke to Jeff Hunt this week, knowing that it was he who, as director of music at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church for the last 28 years, was responsible, I confessed my frustration.

Just as I had long since appreciated, he is guiding us to be up for the challenge.

Just last week there was a celebration to recognize his many gifts, as a choral director, teacher and one who has mastered the art of connecting music and spirituality. No, he

Jeff recalls and appreciates the simple joy of the day that included special music presentations (how about a 10 clarinet ensemble and a luncheon gathering!)

Wondering how he was inspired to pursue a career in music? Jeff credits his predecessor, B.G. Gross, his high school choral director, John Stoffel, and faculty mentors at Taylor University and Northwestern.

Without question the entire Hunt family personifies the love for music and takes various roles in support of the arts and music in their community and Jeff stresses the importance of his family.

When asked about the process he follows in selecting sacred choral music, Jeff talks about the setting and intention.

And, recalling his attitude about challenge, he noted the ability of a given group to reach beyond.

As the longtime leader of his many church choirs and his popular and respected St. Charles Singers, Jeff adds that he strives, too, for balance.

“There is a concept in Native-American lore that ex-

plains choices – choosing a mango means that the substance is immediately accessible, the sweetness is right there.” He goes on, “The choice of a coconut represents the work to get beyond the struggle of the hard outer shell to the immense reward of what is inside.”

Another element of his perspective is his appreciation of the music of the world.

My challenge was to imagine that he had won a raffle and won two tickets to the music that he would most enjoy.

After a long pause he selected the “Bass B minor Mass.”

When asked who the performers would be, he replied without hesitation, “The St. Charles Singers!”

I offered, in fairness, that my favorite genre was not as sophisticated. Treat me to the sound of a marching band.

On that note (sorry) I bargained with him to add “Varsity,” the Wisconsin alma mater, to my funeral arrangements.

What’s next? He loves his role at Baker Memorial just as much today as his first day, and looks forward to many more years. OK, Jeff, what’s the next challenge?

The Geneva Park District’s Hawks Hollow Nature Playground was honored by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association with an Outstanding Facility and Parks Award.

The award recognizes public agencies for their exceptional and unique achievements in design and development. After scoring the highest total points among entries submitted in its division and category from across Illinois, the Geneva Park District received its award at the IAPD/IPRA conference awards luncheon in January.

GENEVA – A skyscraper-building competition in Jay Neitzel’s eighth-grade social studies class at Geneva Middle School North recently rose to new heights, with the tallest skyscraper surpassing the record by 10 feet.

Jay Neitzel’s eighth-graders at Geneva Middle School North recently completed a unit on industry and urban growth, during which they learned about the Industrial Revolution and the growth and expansion of cities.

In addition, students studied past inventors, prominent businesses, and captains of industry.

As a culminating activity, students researched a skyscraper, invention, and/or department store and then created one of their own to demonstrate understanding of the objectives. Although there were three options for the project, the majority of the students chose to build skyscrapers, and Neitzel said in a news release that there seemed to be a new emphasis on trying to break the record for tallest skyscraper.

This year’s top three finishers were Craig Hope and Logan Hunter in first place; Teegan Ebel, Jake Holst and Patrick Hughes in third place; and Emily Anderson and Courtney Schmidt in third place.

Marklund’s is a nonprofit organization that serves children and adults with profound developmental disabilities.

The theme of the event was “African Adventure,” which featured a small Geoffroy leopard cat in one corner, a zebra in another and a native-African-style dance performance commanding attention in the center of the ballroom. Many guests at the event complemented the theme by wearing animal-print fashions in all colors and styles, and enjoyed photo opportunities with a variety of real-life animals including an albino python, macaws,

chinchillas and a desert fox.

“Everyone seemed to have a very enjoyable time at this year’s Top Hat Ball and amazed all of us with their generosity,” said Gilbert Fonger, president and CEO of Marklund, in a news release. “We are so grateful that they chose to take part in this, our largest fundraising event for the year, and help us achieve our mission to ‘make everyday life possible for individuals with development disabilities.’”

Among the close to 580 guests in attendance at the $350per-plate event were Illinois Sen. Karen McConnaughay, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke, several members of the Kane County Board, WGN-TV news anchor Steve Sanders, parents and guardians of Marklund clients, Marklund board members and staff, according to the release.

Forte emphasizes simplicity, utility Designers of sound systems for luxury vehicles could take a cue from lesser mortals.

That would mean faster, easier and more owner-friendly sound systems would replace those highly technical apparatuses currently found on flashy, wide and colorful touchscreens.

It can take four to five times as long (four to five touches) to get to the correct radio station or to the most comfortable temperature setting on those touchscreens than it can on an outlay of simple controls.

Take a recently tested 2014 Kia Forte as an example. It cut the touches and the time in half to find the desired radio station.

Want a certain FM radio station after the sound system has been turned on? Press the FM button and turn a dial to the station.

Want more volume? Turn another dial. No pushing a screen multiple times to get close to the right volume. No seeking a screen of options to discover where the FM lineup can be found and then hoping to push the right button to land where you want.

And the 2014 Forte is priced from $15,900, not from $50,000.

But, who wants to park in front of a refined restaurant in a Forte? Or pull up to a downtown hotel where a uniformed employee opens your Forte car door? Well, those who cannot afford premium, technically advanced four-wheel transportation humbly will do just that.

Since the tested Forte was an EX $19,400 model, it added several luxury features to the pleasure palate. There were memory settings for two for the power front bucket driver’s seat, heated and foldable power exterior mirrors with turn signal indicator, 16-inch alloy instead of 15-inch steel wheels (LX entry model), keyless entry as well as dashboard smart start and stop, eight instead of six speakers (LX), rear view camera, leather-wrapped steering wheel,

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper dual lighted vanity mirrors (LX unlit), sliding center armrest in front and pulldown armrest for rear seat occupants, fog lights in front and hill-start assist. When idling on an incline at a stop light, for instance, the car will not roll back into the vehicle behind. It will hold position until there is acceleration forward.

The EX also gets UVO, Kia’s information and emergency system somewhat similar to – but not the same as – the more well-known OnStar in General Motors products.

All 2014 Fortes, if not the entire Kia lineup, share the same safety fare and warranty of 10 years or 100,000 miles on the

powertrain, five years or 60,000 limited including 24-hour roadside assistance. Safety highlights include an antilock braking system with brake assist, traction and stability controls, front airbags, front side airbags and curtains for the two rows, anchors and tethers for rear child seats and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Fortes also include power windows with express up and down for driver and front seat passenger, power door locks and exterior mirrors as standard equipment. Steering wheels tilt and telescope manually. Air conditioning, Bluetooth, 60-40 split rear seat USB and iPod input jacks, compacts disc player and satellite radio also are common to the several Forte trim levels ( LX, EX, SX). Other common elements are cruise control, automatic on-off LED headlights,

variable intermittent wipers, floor mats, front map and courtesy lights.

Twin 12-volt outlets flank an auxiliary input (iPod) and USB ports at the front of the center console. This horizontal arrangement is at the head of a deep and open storage bin ideal for holding cables, an iPod or other paraphernalia. The bin has a sliding cover.

A strut suspension system in front and rear includes coil springs, shock absorbers and stabilizer bars. During the test week, there was no discomfort while driving on city or suburban streets, rural roadways and interstates. The cabin is relatively quiet. The engine is unusually peppy. The EX and SX models get a 2-liter, inline four-cylinder, 173-horsepower engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The LX has a 1.8-liter,

148-horsepower four-cylinder mated to a six-speed stick transmission.

The tested EX averaged 27.9 miles per gallon of unleaded gasoline usage. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the 2,843-pound EX at 24 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. Fortes have a 13.2-gallon fuel tank. In slightly more than eight seconds, the tested Forte sprinted from 0 to 60 miles per hour, which is fast for a car in this compact , four-door, five-passenger sedan class. It braked (discs front and rear) from 60 mph to a stop in a distance of 123 feet, which is a tad better than other sedans in its class.

Redesigned for 2014, the Forte is a sharp looking car whether in sedan hatchback (named the F5) or coupe (named Koup). Trim levels are LX and EX for the sedan, EX and SX for hatchback and coupe.

Now, getting back to the controls for sound and climate, the Forte excels in simplicity and usage. After the sound system is turned on (push a button), look for a colored horizontal menu that includes AM-FM, SAT (SiriusXM satellite), Media and Phone, and scroll with the button knob to what you want.

Another knob lets you adjust for volume.

The climate controls are similar in design. Turn the system on and go to two round knobs that control temperature (blue portion of circle knob is cool and red is heat). On the same level as the blue and red knobs are pushbutton controls for mode (direction of hot or cool air flow) and air conditioning. Open email exposes wife’s secret weekend Teen’s friend accused of Dear Abby: My wife of 45 years is having an online affair with a man who is a former business client. I found out when she inadvertently left an email message open on her laptop. Her phone records confirm daily long-distance conversations, as well. Although I know they have never met personally, they plan to meet during a weekend convention at a hotel in his hometown next month.

Despite problems in our marriage, neither of us has strayed, and I’m confident she doesn’t want to lose me nor do I want to lose her.

My dilemma is whether to tell her I know what’s going on prior to her trip, or confront her when she returns with pictures taken by a private investigator. Following strict paleo diet may require adding supplements Dear Doctor K: My daughter and several of her college friends are on the “paleo” diet. What is that? Is it healthy?

Dear Reader: The paleo diet, short for “Paleolithic” diet, restricts what you eat to foods the hunter-gatherers of the Stone Age ate 10,000 years ago. While the diet doesn’t require you to live like a caveman, it does require you to eat like one.

Here’s an example of what you can and can’t eat on the paleo diet: Do eat: meat (especially game meat), poultry, fish and shellfish; fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, eggs, seeds, nuts, and olive, coconut and flaxseed oils.

Don’t eat: Any food that is processed, man-made or prepackaged; all grains; legumes (including peanuts); dairy, salt, sugar, vegetable oils, potatoes.

At first glance, the paleo diet appears reasonable. It is rich in many of the foods nutrition professionals highlight. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, lean protein, and limited amounts of sodium and sugar. And it stresses whole foods rather than prepackaged and processed foods.

But there’s a downside.

Following the paleo diet in-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff creases the risk of certain nutritional deficiencies. For example, cutting out all grains and legumes removes sources of certain B vitamins from the diet.

Excluding dairy could lead to a calcium deficiency. There are ways around these issues. Organ meats, particularly liver, provide B vitamins, and dark leafy greens and fish (such as sardines with the bones) are good sources of calcium.

The paleo diet is not the best option for vegetarians. Without grains, legumes and dairy, vegetarians may be hard pressed to eat enough protein. (Soy is out because it’s a legume.)

Supporters of the paleo diet claim that our ancient ancestors who ate this way didn’t suffer from the diseases that plague the modern world, such as heart and blood vessel disease and Type 2 diabetes. I think that’s a silly argument. The fact is that these ancient ancestors lived half as long as we do and never got old enough to develop diseases that typically start in older adulthood.

Bottom line: At this time, there is no strong scientific evidence for claims that a paleo diet helps prevent or treat these medical conditions.

Please don’t misunderstand.

I’m not making fun of the basic idea behind the paleo diet. In fact, I’m sympathetic to it. We humans of the 21st century are not all that different, physically, from ancient humans. Yet many aspects of our life, surely including our diet, have changed radically. Maybe our health would be better if we ate like our ancient ancestors did, since that’s what our bodies were built to do. It’s a reasonable idea.

But the world is full of reasonable ideas about how to improve health, and some of them turn out to be dead wrong. Only longterm scientific studies could tell us if the paleo diet really is healthy.

This is what I tell my patients who have asked about it: Try it to see if you like it. If so, vitamin B and calcium supplements may be a good idea.

being a troublemaker Dr. Wallace: I bowl in a teen league once a week and met a girl from a neighboring high school.

We are both 14 years old and have become good friends. For her Christmas present, her parents let her get a rather radical haircut. It’s very short on one side and shoulder-length on the other. I thought it looked funny the first time I saw it, but after a few weeks, I got used to it and didn’t think anything more about it.

Last night, Ashley needed a ride home. I called my father and he said that he would give her a ride home – and he did. But after he let Ashley out of the car, he told me that she was a “hippie” and probably a non-conformist troublemaker and that I couldn’t have her for a friend anymore, and if I did, he would pull me out of the bowling league.

It so happens that Ashley is really a “goody-good.” She gets good grades and has done fewer “questionable” things than some of my other friends. She also teaches Sunday School for pre-school children, and her father and mother are both medical professionals.

Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, for an episode of “Northern Exposure,” wrote, “Life is spontaneous and it is unpredictable; it is magical.”

Bridge is rarely spontaneous, because it requires thought. But it can occasionally be unpredictable and magical – as in this deal.

South is in three spades. The contract looks unbeatable. Surely the defenders can take only three clubs and one diamond.

Can’t declarer get into the dummy in diamonds, take the spade finesse, and collect seven spades and two diamonds (or one diamond and one heart)?

Well, strange as it may seem, the defenders can defeat the contract – but how?

South had a textbook vulnerable three-spade opening: a good seven-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. After that, no one had sufficient values to argue.

West leads the club king.

East overtakes with his ace and returns the club two. This tells West that East started with only two clubs. West wins the second trick with his eight, then cashes the club queen. What should East discard?

East must pitch a diamond.

Now West leads a fourth club and East throws another diamond.

South cannot ruff on the board, because then he would be unable to take the spade finesse. So South ruffs in his hand and plays a diamond to try to get into the dummy for the trump finesse. But West wins with his ace and leads another club, on which East jettisons his last diamond.

Declarer trumps and plays a diamond, but East ruffs the trick to defeat the contract.

Isn’t that magical?
